PALMA, TRISTON Joker Smoker CD
A reissue of Triston Palma's Joker Smoker, originally released in 1981. Angus Taylor of the BBC on Joker Smoker in 2008: "Triston Palma's (or Palmer as he was also known) Joker Smoker was notable not just for his praise of herb smoking (nothing new in reggae) but for its sardonic appraisal of the moochers and chancers that those who live such a lifestyle are fated to encounter. Its continuing resonance was proven in 2006 when the Italian singjay and producer, Alborosie, released his own anthem, 'Herbalist', on the 'Joker Smoker' rhythm. . . . Joker Smoker was released in 1981, when reggae had become fascinated with its own fundamentals: sparse reworkings of familiar rhythms, with pounding kick drums, simple plodding basslines, and effects laden, highly evocative guitar and keyboard lines. These tended to be played by the Roots Radics band who created all the backings for this disc, produced by the deejay Jah Thomas at the famous Channel One Studio. The received mainstream critical wisdom on this era is that it was a musical blind alley that necessitated the iconoclasm of hard dancehall later in the decade. But the captivating ambience and musical intricacies of a record like Joker Smoker show this up for the reductive nonsense that it is. Bingy Bunny's chopping rhythm guitar work, Sowell Bailey and Dwight Pinckney's plaintive, chorus laden, lead guitar phrasing, and the primordial, relentless drum and bass foundations laid down by Errol Holt and Style Scott are typical of a time when modern production techniques, live instrumentation, dancehall rhythms and rootical lyrics came together as one. But it is the small touches that really impress. These include Dean Fraser, Nambo Robinson and Deadly Headley Bennett's mocking horns (parodying Palma's dried honey vocals) on the title track, Gladstone Anderson's precisely considered, minimal piano, and percussionist Sky Juice's use of a cuica friction drum on 'Give Me Give Me Your Love'. 'Joker Smoker' may be the album's centre, but every one's a winner here. A perfect example of what was, in reality, a high point in reggae's golden age."

ANNO STAMM Fragments B 12"
Another slice of hardcore funky eccentricity from the mind and machines of Lars Stowe, aka Anno Stamm, this one is a sequel of sorts to his FragmentsA release (ACOS1X12, 2013). Another well-crafted, three-track 12" building off his recent To Gravit And Symmet We Rhyth LP (ACASLP X1, 2016) running the gamut of the house-techno spectrum. Kicking it off with the slow build of the soundscape groover "La Viande", leading into the flipside mainroom thump of "Do Yoused To Go" and closing the 12" with the shimmering synth workout of "Pyramid Peach".

WHITE WINE Killer Brilliance CD
"I want to fall in and out of the cracks of genres, finding the nerves not yet hit. It's usually in the disturbing part of the spectrum..." So says Joe Haege, who's earned a reputation for unsettling sounds with 31 Knots and Tu Fawning. He was also a member of Menomena and The Dodos. Haege formed White Wine (known earlier as Vin Blanc) as a solo project, but it developed into an informal duo following the release of their second album, 2013's In Every Way But One, after Haege invited Fritz Brückner (Tu Fawning, Menomena) on his European tour. When an apartment fell vacant next to Brückner's home in Leipzig, Haege deserted Los Angeles, and, newly settled in Eastern Germany, added Chistian "Kirmes" Kuhr (Zentral Heizung Des Todes) to the coven while helping to build what would become White Wine's default home and fully functioning studio, Haunted Haus. This new line-up finds Haege delivering the most realized, intense and, at times, horrifying music of his career. The product of 18 months spent touring together, Killer Brilliance emerged, he says, from the trio's need "to get something dark and sinister out of our systems", and this is reflected, too, in the album's title. This sordid realization is mirrored in Killer Brilliance's disturbing, sometimes even distressing songs. Brückner's effects-heavy bassoon gives the record a macabre depth, while Kühr's aggressive drumming and percussion, firmly upfront in the mix, drives songs relentlessly to their ultimate demise. Haege, moreover, displays the urgent, menacing air of a preacher man delivering sermons about an imminent apocalypse. Punctuated by contrastingly feminine, spoken-word vignettes that add to the uneasy cinematic mood -- one that draws upon dystopic visions to '60s style film noir -- Killer Brilliance piles in with the rabid "Broken Letter Hour" and the desperately tense "Hurry Home", before the extraordinary title track pops eardrums and eyeballs. There's also the Birthday Party malevolence of "Falling From The Same Place", the growing threat of "Abundance", the baroque, carnivalesque "I'd Run", and the deceptive calm of "Bird In Hand". Musically, White Wine feed upon a diverse range of ingredients, including PJ Harvey, Liars, Beak, Suicide, Minutemen, David Bowie, Chuck D, and Diamanda Galás. Lyrically, Killer Brilliance exhibits Haege's self-confessed "weird affinity for double entendres" and "need to hold onto the sheer madness of existence."

AUBURN LULL Hypha LP
LP version. Yellow vinyl. The reclusive midwesterners return from dormancy with nine stunning, elegantly sparse tracks that showcase the band at its most focused, melodic, and mysterious. While distinctly sounding like Auburn Lull, Hypha veers into uncharted territory, delivering surprises at every turn. The hallmark cavernous guitars and vast, slow-motion expanses, though still present, are reigned in, restrained, and paired with a newfound sense of minimalism and a broader palette of sounds, textures, and shapes. While the band have existed for more than 20 years, they've always remained a well-kept secret to the wider indie community. Hypha is a brilliant example of why the band's rich textures and precise compositions are adored by so many. "... discerning ears will find that Auburn Lull's rich tapestry is as dangerously hypnotic and transporting as it is soothing." --Tiny Mix Tapes

GUTHRIE, WOODY Woody Guthrie: The Tribute Concerts 3CD/2BOOK

The house band included members of Swampwater and Ry Cooder. Originally released on two LPs In addition, the fabulous 2017 set on Bear Family contains: Twenty never before released tracks! Bonus tracks include interviews with Judy Collins, Jack Elliott, Arlo Guthrie, Country Joe McDonald, Phil Ochs, Tom Paxton, and Pete Seeger. Rare photos and never before seen stills from the Hollywood Bowl show film masters. Essays by Will Kaufman, Wenzel, and Sean Wilentz. Reproduction of the original 1972 TRO Concert Book includes historic and concert photos with music notations and lyrics. When Woody Guthrie died on October 3, 1967, after a stubborn fifteen year bout with Huntington's Disease, a lot of people who had known him, worked with him, or just sung his songs felt a spontaneous desire to do something. A 'Tribute to Woody Guthrie' was planned for two performances at Carnegie Hall on January 20th, 1968. The list of artists joined Woody's own friends and peers with the next generation of songwriters and musicians just coming into their own. Appearing at the January concert were Judy Collins, Bob Dylan (in the first public appearance after his motorcycle accident in 1966 with members of The Band), Jack Elliott, Arlo Guthrie, Richie Havens, Odetta, Tom Paxton, Pete Seeger. Actors Will Geer and Robert Ryan narrated the program. Both performances were sold out an hour after tickets went on sale. Those fortunate enough to attend participated in one of the most exciting and remarkable musical experiences of all time. Two years later, eighteen thousand people attended the west coast Tribute which took place on September 12, 1970, at the Hollywood Bowl."

MANO NEGRA Best Of Mano Negra CD
Because Music present a reissue of Best Of Mano Negra, a "best of" compilation originally released in 1998. With many influences, the musicians of "La Mano" created a peculiar sound, a rock-salsa-raï-reggae-rap cocktail which they baptized "Patchanka". Manu Chao, who wrote lyrics, gives to the Patchanka a more personal definition: "a popular dance with apache lyrics and chorizo spirit". The band started touring across France in October 1987 and rapidly established a solid reputation. A few months later, when the second record Puta's Fever was released in 1989, the success was obvious. Tracks sung in French, Spanish, and Arabic, "Pas Assez De Toi", "King Kong Five", and "Sidi H'Bibi" became immediate hits. After a long live-cruise in 1992 along the South American coasts, Mano Negra went back to France and separated in 1994. It's hard to tell the impact of Mano Negra across French and Spanish speaking countries, with many particular experiences of the people who saw them on their tours. Includes a 16-page booklet.

Jean-Philippe Nataf and Jean-Christophe Urbain remember their Meilleurs Souvenirs ("best memories"): from "Jodie", a 7" recorded in 1987 to "Danny Wilde" (1999), this band's discography underlines perfectly the strength of melodies and charm of harmonies. If no unreleased track expands this "best of" hits from their four albums, Meilleurs Souvenirs flies across time and draws a perfect world on an outline inherited from The Beatles with "Dentelle" and "Les Cailloux". PETIT FANTOME Un Mouvement Pour Le Vent CD
Petit Fantôme ("Small Ghost") is the evasive and mysterious pseudonym of Pierre Loustaunau, an adventurous multi-instrumentalist with quite the collective experience (Frànçois & The Atlas Mountains, Crane Angels, Le Pingouin, Iceberg). He started his solo adventure in 2006 and after a few moving years, he settled in southern France city Bayonne to write the maxi Yallah (2011) and the mixtape Stave (2013), two highly-praised records. Three years after Torse Bombé (2014), a "melodic-grindcore-punk-rock-pop" project broadcast as a free download on his birthday, Petit Fantôme is back with Un Mouvement Pour Le Vent ("A Movement For Wind"), a natural title for this ingrained skateboarder and casual hiker. Pierre himself willingly sees it as his first album. The perpetually dissatisfied but prolific composer delivers 11 smart, inspired, and emancipated tracks. Right from the start, there's a clear taste for the '90s with "Quelque Chose A Eu Lieu". With this way, always so peculiar and moving, to crack the armor: voluntarily short texts, like "haïkus that can mean a lot", according to Pierre. The immediate hit "Easy Come Easy Go" with a chorus inspired by "Don't Talk (Put Your Head On My Shoulder)" by The Beach Boys and the immediate charisma of "Libérations Terribles", are undoubtedly rhythmic. Produced by Edge Of Town and licensed to Because Music, Un Mouvement Pour Le Vent weaves between romantic and cloudy noisy pop music, going from one to the other with a disconcerting agility. CD version comes in a three-panel digipocket; Includes 12-page poster booklet.

REBOTINI, ARNAUD 120 Beats Per Minute (Original Soundtrack) CD
House music broke through in France in 1987, at the same time when AIDS arrived in the country with the first contamination peak in gay and drug addict circles. In 1989, the founders of advocacy group Act Up-Paris knew that the fight against AIDS and triumphant house music should be joined together. From 1992 to 1995, the period covered by Robin Campillo's 2017 film 120 battements par minute (120 Beats per Minute), house reached its most beautiful plateau though techno was also becoming dominant. 120 Beats per Minute, winner of the Grand Prix at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival, captures a moment of coming together through clubbing, a moment when fears are forgotten in the dance with what Act Up called "the chosen family." Flooded with light, this is their activist sanctuary. Arnaud Rebotini, who composed the soundtrack of Campillo's 2013 film Eastern Boys, is a recognized DJ and composer. His soundtrack work is marked by his tasteful love for house and techno. With his score for 120 Beats per Minute, he accompanies and supports the images with a process marked by deep respect, including his remix of Bronski Beat's "Smalltown Boy." But this soundtrack is not nostalgic -- it's a modern look at what occurred a long time ago, with the same fascination for synthesizers of that era where the analog was so important. The soundtrack is what balances this film and what justifies such a conceptual title: 120 BPM, the natural rhythm of both house and the heart, the music that kept the people from losing hope. CD version presented in Digipak with four-page booklet; includes four bonus tracks (including Kenlou's remix of Rebotini's "What About This Love").

JABU Sleep Heavy LP
LP version. Blackest Ever Black presents Sleep Heavy, the debut album of broken-hearted, downtempo R&B/street-soul and supremely atmospheric, introspective electronics from Jabu: a trio comprised of vocalist/lyricists Alex Rendall and Jasmine Butt, and producer Amos Childs. The group was born out of Bristol's Young Echo collective: an ecosystem unto itself which has birthed and nurtured a number of other notable soundsystem-rooted projects and artists to date, including Kahn & Neek, Sam Kidel, Ishan Sound, Ossia, Asda, Chester Giles, and Killing Sound (Childs with Kidel and Vessel). Jabu's previous 7" singles, though arresting, barely hinted at the level of accomplishment and emotional heft that Sleep Heavy delivers. It's a future Bristol classic with a universal resonance, with songs that are highly personal but deeply relatable, and a tripped-out, time-dissolving sound design that both haunts and consoles. It is, first and foremost, a meditation on grief, loss, making sense of separation, and death; but it also looks forward to what might come after the aftermath: healing, acceptance, the chance to begin again. Childs is one of the most gifted producers of his generation and his work here, grounded in hip-hop but floating free, is a thing of sustained wonder: crepuscular, melancholic, subtly psychedelic, and heavily dubwise, but always concise and purposeful. Stitched together from deep-dug and beautifully repurposed samples, it draws on influences from US R&B to Japanese art-pop minimalism -- Mariah to Mariah Carey, if you will -- and a rich seam of underground UK soul, boogie, DIY/post-punk, library music, and lovers rock. There is also of course a distant connection to the Bristol blues of Smith & Mighty and the sultry urban gothic of Protection-era Massive Attack (1994), but Jabu's orchestration of womb-like ambiences, cold synth tones, and brittle beats feel entirely sui generis. They provide the perfect setting for Rendall's wounded, imploring and carefully weighted vocals, which are no less extraordinary: nodding to giants like Teddy Pendergrass and The Temptations in terms of phrasing and front-and-center vulnerability, with something of The Associates' Billy MacKenzie in there too; defeated but defiant. Meanwhile, Jas's heavenly interventions, sometimes leading but more often parsed and layered into tremulous, gossamer abstraction, draw a line between the Catholic choral harmonies of her childhood and the ethereal, oceanic sweep of Cocteau Twins. By its end, Sleep Heavy's world-weariness is intact and scarcely diminished, but some light has been admitted, and is visible from the sea-floor.

For the new Blancmange record, all the songs were written by Arthur while Benge added percussion and layers of analog synth, with the pair then mixing the record together in the latter's Memetune studios in Cornwall. MARIETTA La Passagere LP
LP version. Includes printed undersleeve, "The passenger has set up camp inside your body, and you can't remember if it happened yesterday or if she's always been there. Her crimson hair irradiates your blood as chants and laughs spill from the bedroom. The vessel shudders then arches as the loving parasite bites the back of your neck. In the mirror, bright red gum, milky teeth. The face that suddenly eyes you has painted the town over and poisoned the source. The orchestra of persisting ghosts wanted to record a Bob Dylan album that would sound like Iggy Pop The Idiot. All the while, you were delirious in a smoke-filled aquarium in a car with its windows sealed. Then, the wreck abandoned in a ditch, we took the sea towards California. On the bridge, the virus of the passenger gives her flesh to your starry silhouette. I love you even more, the both of you. Today."Sophomore album by Marietta, La Passagère, follows Basement Dreams Are The Bedroom Cream (BORNBAD 074CD/LP, 2015), which was lauded by French daily newspaper Liberation, magazines Les Inrockuptibles, Magic, New Noise, and online magazine Noisey. After touring with his band for two years and playing well-received concerts at Villette Sonique, Rock en Seine, Levitation Festival, Musiques Volantes, Bars en Trans, laureate of leading French development prize Fair 2017 Guillaume, Marietta has come back with nine songs written in French for the first time. The album was recorded in Los Angeles by Chris Cohen, singer-songwriter and producer extraordinaire, with two albums signed on Captured Tracks and past member of Deerhoof and The Curtains. Mixed by Kenneth Gilmore, permanent member of Ariel Pink Haunted Graffiti, who counts in his mixing catalogue Front Row Seat To Earth by Weyes Blood (2016) and My Dreams Dictate My Reality by SOKO (BEC 5161988/5161989, 2015). A carnal, sensual, hallucinating, and melancholic record, fed by representations of the woman, the modern city, self-abandon, paranoia, and redemption. La Passagère is inhabited by the ghosts of Syd Barret and Lou Reed, and nods to contemporary productions by Kurt Vile, Cate Le Bon, Tim Presley, Kevin Morby, and of course Chris Cohen.

MOEBIUS/STORY/LEIDECKER Familiar CD
Tim Story on Familiar: "When Jon Leidecker phoned in early 2012 with a proposition, it seemed a little too good to be true. Jon, part of a loose-knit west coast collective of sound artists whose work I much admired, wondered if Dieter Moebius and I might be interested in meeting him in a spectacular Montana mountain studio for a week of recording, no strings attached. Moebius, always up for an adventure, didn't need much convincing either. Converging on tiny Whitefish in September of that year, our little group of five (Moebius's wife Irene, and my wife Maggie couldn't resist either) spent a few marvelous days exploring nearby Glacier National Park before settling down in a motor lodge at the edge of town. The real revelation, we soon realized, was Brett Allen's Snowghost recording studio, perched chalet-style above Whitefish Lake. I'll leave it to others to comment on the music that resulted, but the experience -- old school togetherness and live musical interaction in an era of internet collaboration -- was remarkable. The days blended together, and at the end we left, reluctantly, with a hard drive full of what would become Snowghost Pieces (BB 167CD/LP, 2014) and Familiar. . . . Moebius's passing in 2015 adds a layer of deep bittersweet to memories of the Snowghost sessions, but the opportunity was unforgettable. The sessions were born of improvisations, the music only being discovered in the moment it was sounded. Specific allusions to the natural beauty that surrounded us might seem hard to spot in Familiar -- it contains some of the more restless and abstract music that was recorded that week. But the album's final track 'Vexed' echoes a bit of that strangely epic wilderness, and also perhaps the most perfect balance of the individual musical sensibilities of Jon, Moebius and I. One day sightseeing in the Rockies, along a particularly scenic stretch of road, we pulled over to gawk. While most of us were looking upward at some of the most spectacular vistas on earth, Moebius spotted a pink plastic construction marker half-buried in the gravel. A tawdry, dusty man-made 'flower' in the midst of paradise. Subversive, unexpected, unexplained, and yes, somehow familiar. The photo he snapped became this album's cover, an image discovered by the same curious spirit that led all three of us to the music."

"A three-guitar revision sees Keith Moliné, Gary Siperko and Kristof Hahn (Swans) expand the established orchestra of analog and digital synths (Wheeler, Gagarin), clarinet (Boon), drums (Mehlman) and Thomas' unique vocals. 20 Years In A Montana Missile Silo follows their 2015 release Carnival Of Souls, which was widely praised by the media and used by cult series American Horror Story in Season 4. David Thomas: 'The new album is The James Gang teaming up with Tangerine Dream. The Chinese Whispers methodology we worked on the last two albums has been replaced by the Dark Room. Put musicians in a lightless room and by feeling one small section of an unknown object have them figure what it must be.' The album was recorded and mixed at Suma, Painesville Ohio. Now you can say you were there - rather than Skavoovee chore Damage and flame was our desire for this fight Two fans rebuffed tossed cinderblocks thru the front doors that night Locking up the Film Academy was only pageantry and a lie Nothing secure anymore - just crouch down - on your knees - crawl inside"

GOBI, LEILA 2017 CD
Standing beside the Niger River esplanade in downtown, Bamako Leila Gobi waves to people in the passing cars. She smiles and laughs with them. Walking down the street she is greeted warmly by strangers. From the distant provincial city Menaka, she has become a successful artist here in the capitol of Mali. 2017 is Leila Gobi's second album on Clermont Music. It was recorded in Hampathe Bah Studio, on the second floor of a group of buildings off the main road in a suburb of western Bamako. The sessions were intimate. The tracks were laid without effects, clean. Leila wanted to produce an album that brought a new dimension to her music. The problem was how to create this new sound with only the basic tools available in Mali. It is almost impossible for musicians there to find the equipment available to the average westerner. The talent is there, just not the hardware. And electric power failures and poor communications infrastructure interrupt regularly. The final sounds were found in the studio while mixing in the synthesizers and electronic effects. Tracks were mixed and mastered in Bamako, New York, and Los Angeles. Remaining faithful to the underlying roots of the music, 2017 bridges genres. The album forges the origins of trance, beats, and loops with new technology, a fusion of many influences. And across it all, Leila Gobi's unmistakable voice shines through. Personnel: Leila Walet Gobi - vocals; Khalil M. Touré - guitars; Amadou Dembélé - bass; Abdourhamane Salaha - calabash, conga, percussion.

MARKS Drain Cassette
Following a standout remix of Spokes' "Flight" in 2016, Miami-based producer Marks makes his debut proper with Drain. Discovered after Coyote Records found his SoundCloud page and lead track "Drain" in particular. Marks' sound -- a distorted, grainy take on US rap beat-making -- was inspired partly by growing up in Jamaica and coming into contact with rap and video game soundtracks after moving to the US. While his music may appear simple on first listen, it masks a deeper, darker complexity. Title track "Drain" is a hypnotic, three-minute loop that lands somewhere in between blissful dream and shadowy, dystopian nightmare, while "South Cold" spouts tension and anxiety from every bar. This theme continues on the crunchy shrill of "Lantern", while final track "Dash" signs off with dizzying melodies and scurrying beats on a harder, club-focused note. Spokes turns in a stunning widescreen remix of "Drain" that wouldn't feel out of place on the OST to a rebooted slasher movie.

VA Doing Our Thing: More Soul From Jamdown 1970-1982 2LP
"Artists include Dave Barker, BB Seaton, Junior Byles, Augustus Pablo, Glen Adams, Willie Lindo, Lloyd Charmers, Cedric Brooks, Richard Ace, and more. Sleeve notes from Steve Barrow and Noel Hawks and superb photographs from Dave Hendley. 180-gram vinyl (2-LP set). Cover versions have always been an integral part of Jamaican music and an indication of the wide-ranging influences on reggae and the versatility and adaptability of its artists, musicians and producers in their approach to music making. Anything and everything could be, and has been, incorporated into the mix over the years but it is what reggae's artists, producers and engineers did with their sources that make their cover versions so special and so vitally important; in many cases their versions have travelled so far from their starting point that they are virtually unrecognizable. This set, compiled by reggae historian Steve Barrow, not only demonstrates the massive influence of American soul and disco releases on Jamaican music but also showcases the wholly original approach of Jamaica's musical maestros. The track listing for Doing Our Thing reads like a roll call of some of the best of Jamaica's greatest ever singers, deejays, musicians and producers and the selection opens with one of reggae's first ever artists to break into the international charts. In 1971 the inimitable Dave Barker, as one half of 'Dave & Ansel Collins', hit all around the globe with Double Barrel which was inspired by two American records The Funkie Moon by Smokey Johnson & Company and Party Time by Ramsey Lewis. Dave could sing every bit as well as he could deejay and both sides of his tremendous talent are featured here." Gatefold sleeve; 20-page booklet.

HUNTING LODGE 1982-1989 CD
"Hunting Lodge can be seen as one of the few real 'Industrial' pioneers in the early 80`s (beside SPK, Lustmord, Throbbing Gristle). 1982-1989 represents the 'song oriented' side of a band that evolved relentlessly throughout its 8 years of existence and comes with a remastered/restored version of the legendary underground club hit: 'Tribal Warning Shot'. All tracks were remastered. Lon C. Diehl & Richard Skott met in Port Huron, Michigan, in 1981, and quickly bonded over their fascination with the music of T.G., SPK, M.B., and Dome. Hunting Lodge was born. Joined by Karl Nordstrom, the trio mixed synthesizers, bass, metal & electronic percussion, time-shifting effects, and vocals into a dark sonic stew. Nordstrom moved to San Francisco after the recording of the first Hunting Lodge release, the cassette-only At The Harrington Ballroom (1982). Diehl now employed a Roland Synth, Sequencer & 808 drum machine. Skott added his guitar to the musical arsenal, which he used to trigger a Korg MS-20 synth and a vocoder. Diehl and Skott continued recording at a feverish pace, and their first LP, WILL (track 14) was released in 1983. 'Tribal Drums' and primitive digital sampling units soon entered the picture. On the Nomad Souls LP (4, 7) and Tribal Warning Shot 12" (1, 13), rhythm and percussion were driving many of the recordings. Richard Skott moved to Oakland, CA at the end of their first U.S. tour, November 1984. The third wave of Hunting Lodge (1985) brought a new engineer to the band: Helmut Robison recorded the album 8-Ball (3, 6, 9, 12) & Carnivora! EP (5, 10) and played drum kit and bass on many of the recordings (as well as 'live'). Upon his return, Skott's guitar had shed its heavily-affected electronic exoskeleton and Hunting Lodge began to mimic a traditional 'rock' band, while retaining their 'Industrial' roots. In 1989 Diehl & Skott recorded their final demos (8, 11)."

DJ MC, aka Mario Cooper, comes from the Southside of Chicago was first introduced to the world outside of footwork's inner circle through Planet Mu's second episode of the legendary Bangs & Works compilation in November 2011. One of the collection's most remarkable and memorable tracks, "Y Fall", made it very clear that Mario Cooper plays in his own league. DJ MC is part of the movement's second generation comprising such heavyweights as DJ Roc and EQ Why, a group who could be dubbed the Fruity Loops wizards. Countless times he appeared spinning tunes at the scene's long-lasting core event, Battlegroundz. After quite a few digital EPs on various labels and on his own Bandcamp page, Duck N' Cover present his first release on vinyl. This monster of a record comprises 11 tracks on two sides, has an ultra-fast pace as it contains tracks lasting from one-and-a-half minutes to two-and-a-half minutes, which makes it demanding material for the DJ, no time to sleep. Prepare yourself for a rollercoaster ride. This record is a snapshot which offers its listeners a look into the culture's innermost workings, from the producer's point of view the track game is just as quick as the dance moves. DJ MC's footwork is very much rooted in hip-hop and rap. This given fact adds a very classic and classy touch to all of his output. BRAINWALTZERA Poly-Ana CD
Brainwaltzera's debut album Poly-Ana follows quickly on the heels of the producer's Aescoba EP (FILM 006EP, 2017). Across thirteen tracks of both previously released material and fresh excursions into the artist's world, Brainwaltzera explores sounds ranging from luscious, downtempo grooves and expertly reduced brain-dance cuts with nods to early '90s experimental IDM to harder, more caustic outings, all bound together by a recurring theme of otherworldly ambience. Taking its name from a variety of sources dear to the artist, including polyphonic analog synthesizers and the Pollyanna principle itself -- a theory that suggests individuals recall pleasurable experience more acutely than displeasing ones -- the title represents a meeting point in the artistic process between creative method and conceptual choices. Production techniques range from more traditional hardware synthesis to the incorporation of a modified dot matrix printer acting as a modulation source for MIDI parameters. Sample sources include VHS material from the producer's own childhood and ambient Bullet Train samples from a production session traveling from Tokyo to Kyoto. According to the enigmatic producer, memory and its fundamental role in the human experience is one of the central themes of the record. While the artist's own experiences shaped the sound of the record, there is no attempt to impose them on the listener through blatant exposition. A particular stimulus, such as sound or scent, can transport an individual back to a particular point in their life. Scent has long been identified as the most efficient agent for this phenomenon, providing perhaps the most visceral form of "brain travel". With this in mind, a unique fragrance was engineered by creative director Mario Lombardo's Atelier Oblique brand, exclusively for the album's physical release. This was designed to act as a vehicle to assist the listener in retaining the first experience of hearing the record and to act as a future trigger, transporting the individual back to that moment. Brainwaltzera's work has quickly found plaudits amongst a host of industry tastemakers and artists alike -- not least Aphex Twin himself, who has appeared sporadically online with comments praising the music via his now infamous user18081971 SoundCloud account. Mature and wonderfully executed, Poly-Ana represents some of the finest recent work within the genre, and yet another noteworthy addition to the FILM discography. CD version comes in a digipack.

A.R.C. SOUNDTRACKS Dereliction//Mirror CD
A.R.C. Soundtracks is the audio/visual project of K. Craig and David Armes. Dereliction//Mirror is the duo's third release, following on from their debut album Archive: Volume One (2014) and a cassette release for Sacred Tapes, From A Shattered Beam (2016). Dereliction//Mirror was created on-residency at Salford's Islington Mill, home to GNOD, Sacred Tapes, and many other noise/experimental musicians and labels. It is an audio/visual piece that uses the semi-derelict attic spaces as both inspiration and source material. Focusing on the notion of ruins and their potential for reappropriation, Dereliction//Mirror combines a dense, multi-layered sound-world with ritualistic visuals to create an immersive, hypnotic work. This new film and soundtrack takes the listener into a bleak auditory realm of post-industrial structures and traces the role of the body within these liminal spaces; Strained harmonics and industrial, discordance mesh with veiled rhythms and spoken-word narrative to create a heavy, static energy to both sound and visuals. Dereliction//Mirror is the sixth instalment of Gizeh's Dark Peak series. Artwork by SmilingPaperGhosts. Hand screen-printed sleeves; Edition of 175 (numbered).

ABATWA (THE PYGMY) Why Did We Stop Growing Tall? CD
The Abatwa ("pygmy") are one of Africa's most endangered peoples. This album -- produced by Ian Brennan (Hanoi Masters (GB 021CD/LP), Zomba Prison Project, Tinariwen) -- is a stunning, spirited document of their deep and varied musical culture. The fourth volume in Glitterbeat's Hidden Musics series, it collects rough-hewn, tribal sonics from the Rwandan borderlands, where haunted solo and group singing meets hand-fashioned string instruments and battery-operated loop machines. The textures are strange and abstract but at the same time intimate and joyful. Performers include: Christoph Ntabanganyimana, Bihoyiki Dathive, Emmanuel Hatungimana, Teonesse Majambere, Beatrice Mukarungi, Rosine Nyiranshimiyimana, Ruth Nyiramfumukoye, Patrick Manishimine, Jean Claude Nzabonimpa, Jean Baptiste Kanyambo, Emmanuel Habumuremy, and Ange Kamagaju.Notes by producer Ian Brennan: "In a land where men lead each other hand-in-hand, but homophobia runs rampant, we drove off the main road and miles up the ridge to one of the pockets hardest hit by the genocide -- a place where the residents stopped waving back. An area so very isolated, it was as if the genocide had never ended. Topping that, we were traveling this dirt trail with two Tutsis in an area where they had recently been 'hunting Rwandans,' and a sense of discomfort was tangible, as if an invisible line had been crossed and we'd entered ibiwa ('problems'). . . . The Abatwa ("pygmy") tribe is identified as one of the most marginalized, voiceless and endangered populations in Africa. In fact, their name is frequently taken in vain as a generalized slur towards others unrelated to them. Still, many among their group prefer the term to the official, PC mouthful/post-genocidal replacement moniker that they have been straddled with out of clear overcompensation: 'The people who were left behind because of the facts of Rwandan history.' . . . We were lucky enough to experience a 19-year-old female freestyle rapper, Rosine Nyiranshimiyimana, who is grittier than most any gangsta'. And right by her side, stood, Emmanuel Hatungimana, the mohawk-cut traditional music master, along with the husband/wife team that traded in eerie harmonies that nearly make Black Sabbath sound a bit trite. And keeping it in the family, mother and son, Ruth Nyiramfumukoye and Patrick Manishimine struck dueling Umudulis. A featured instrument is the 11-string Icyembe, one that has a resemblance not unlike a surfboard and when turned upright, stands taller than some of its Abatwa players."

LEE, BUNNY "STRIKER" Strikes Back: The Sound Of Studio One CD
The sound of Studio One can be identified by the great singers that it cultivated along the many great songs that these singers released. But as Studio One's dominance was slowly pulled away by the up-and-coming new breed of producers, many of the artists would inevitably end up working for these new camps, and so the songs and singers found a new audience. The reggae sound of the Studio One would make a great combination and the man to pull this was together Bunny Lee. The 1960s in Jamaica was run by two main factions: Coxsone's Studio One and Duke Reid's Treasure Isle. These two leading protagonists saw what some of the other great soundsystem men like "Tom The Great Sebastian" had not taken onboard, that when the tunes they imported began to dry up from the USA, their future lied in producing music, tunes that suited the musical styles that the people of Jamaica still enjoyed. By the late 1960s, this supremacy was being challenged by the up-and-coming new producers on the scene, Lee Perry being one, and the other being "Ghost of the Studios" himself, Bunny Lee. Bunny "Striker" Lee may have inherited the moniker "Striker" from his liking of a particular TV show called The Hitch-Hiker, but it would soon stand also for the considerable hits he would obtain as he was declared producer of the year in Jamaica in 1969, 1970,1971, and 1972. For this release, Kingston Sounds have compiled many of the great hits that Bunny Lee recorded with the singers that had originally cut at the famed Studio One. Bunny Lee's sprinkling of magic over some classic tunes... the sound of Studio One backed up this time Bunny "Striker" Lee's set of star musicians, The Aggravators. Proving you can't keep a good tune down, or a great producer pushing forward... Bunny Lee strikes back... Features: Dennis Brown, John Holt, Alton Ellis, Jackie Edwards, Delroy Wilson, Ken Boothe, Horace Andy, John Holt & The Paragons, Dave Baker, Pat Kelly, Cornell Campbell and The Eternals, and Johnny Clarke. CD version includes four bonus tracks featuring: Lord Tanamo, Cornell Campbell and The Eternals, Hortense Ellis, and Cornell Campbell.

RESIDENTS & RENALDO AND THE LOAF, THE Title In Limbo (Special Edition) 2CD
"OK, we know you all waited for this a very long time, but now the wait is over. We are happy to be able to present you a special 2 disc edition of Title In Limbo including the legendary 4 Daze! Many of you have heard about this legendary recording for a long time, now over 35 years after its recording it is made available to the public for the first time. Title In Limbo is an album that was recorded with The Residents in San Francisco in 1981.The bands played a very experimental jam session together and went back to these recordings 2 years later, in 1983. Title In Limbo finally came out in November of that year on vinyl. 1998 saw the first complete CD release as a numbered limited edition on Ralph America, copies of which are scarce and now collectors' items. But that CD differed from the vinyl in that some tracks had short fade ups applied to them which did not truly reflect the original release. So we are excited for the first time on CD to now offer this album re-mastered with all tracks fully restored to their originally recorded states. The second disc is the legendary 4 Daze recording. Also included is a booklet with rare photographs and of course the lyrics for all the songs. In this case, all Klanggalerie can say to you is: Buy or die."

"Asmus Tietchens is a sound artist and composer from Hamburg, Germany. He got interested in musique concrete by listening to a German radio program when he was 10 years old. In 1965, at the age of 18, Asmus started experimenting with tape loops and turned them into musical collages. Soon, the use of synthesizers was added. In 1980 his debut album Nachtstücke was released, produced by Peter Baumann of Tangerine Dream. This was soon followed by a series of albums of electronic pop music for the Sky label, home of many Krautrock bands. Tietchens often uses special source materials for his compositions such as water ('Seuchengebiete'), human voices ('Von Mund zu Mund'), paper ('Papier Ist Geduldig'). He is associated with the Industrial music scene through his collaborations and releases on labels such as United Dairies, Esplendor Geometrico or Dom Records. Tietchens never studied composition, he has no academic background, everything he does is self-taught or learning-by-doing. Nevertheless, he was professor for sound design in Hamburg in recent years. The album Eisgang was originally released on Dutch Korm Plastics label in 1995 as a limited edition vinyl LP only. It was later reissued as a double CD with Dämmerattacke. For this latest edition, we have added another bonus track making the CD 20 minutes longer than the LP."

R-A-G Dreadfully Nervous 12"
The R-A-G trio, aka Dutch producers Ma Spaventi, G-String, and Aroy Dee deliver three raw acid-jams with Aroy on the couch working the mic. The lyrics of "Dreadfully Nervous" are based on an Edgar Allan Poe story. "Dreadfully Nervous (Aryd's Acid Mix)" is a gurgling brew of squelchy acid with dark vocals and pinging cowbells pulling you in all directions. "Dreadfully Stoned" is more stripped back, with a rubbery arpeggiated synth the main hook over subtle, supple drums. The bright and glistening "No Soul" has metal hits and claps and prickly acid, all bursting out of dusty Chicago drums.

FOXX AND THE MATHS, JOHN The Machine CD
Directed by York Theatre Royal's associate director Juliet Forster, Neil Duffield's adaptation of E.M. Forster's chilling short story The Machine Stops (1909) explores humanity's increasingly intricate and complex relationship with technology. The acclaimed production, which opened in 2016 and toured again in 2017, features a specially composed soundtrack by John Foxx And The Maths -- John Foxx and Benge. This forms much of the music on The Machine, although there are new mixes and some extended material as the pair developed stage music into a fully-fledged album. Described as "eerie", "evocative", and "a triumphant score of chest-crushing anxiety" by The Independent and The Guardian in their stage reviews, the music (created entirely on analog synthesizers and drum machines) is some of the finest the pair have created yet. The Machine's rich atmospheres move from the sinister breathing effects that start on "The Ghost In The Machine" through moments of beauty on "The Other Mother" and ARP Odyssey-soloing "Transworld Travelogue" into an ancient, mythic song on "Memory Oxide" where Foxx further investigates a style that he first explored on his own Cathedral Oceans (1997). Elizabeth Bernholz (Gazelle Twin) provides the high, lilting vocals on "Genetic Hymnal" and the album ends -- as does the stage production -- with the elegiac theme of "Orphan Waltz".

ASH RA TEMPEL EXPERIENCE Live In Melbourne CD
2015 live recording from the Supersense Festival in Melbourne, previously unreleased, featuring a supergroup of Manuel Göttsching, Ariel Pink, Oren Ambarchi, and Shags Chamberlain playing material from classic Ash Ra Tempel releases, 1972's Schwingungen (MGART 112CD) and 1973's Seven Up (MGART 113CD). Taken from Göttsching on the release: "Out of the blue -- I was invited to perform in Melbourne, Australia. It happened thanks to my dear old friend Mick Glossop, who made the suggestion to Sophia Brous, at the time the curator of a music-festival called 'Supersense' at the Melbourne Arts Centre in summer 2015. In addition to the solo performance I'd planned, Sophia proposed an additional collaboration or session performances with some of the other participating musicians. I had never been very happy in performing 'public sessions'. I've always tried to first look for a conceptual approach, and my wife, Ilona J. Ziok, came up with the idea of performing some Ash Ra Tempel classics. That's when the idea for an 'Experience' was born. I decided that pieces from the second and third Ash Ra Tempel albums Schwingungen and Seven Up would be most appropriate for a group performance with Ariel Pink, Shags Chamberlain, and Oren Ambarchi. We conversed by email, and much to my surprise, they all claimed to be very familiar with this music. . . . We finally met in Melbourne for a relaxed afternoon rehearsal, just two days before the actual concert performance took place. After a technical set-up we went straight into 'Look At Your Sun' and it was as if we had performed it only yesterday. It continued like that with the other tracks. For the first part of Schwingungen I decided for a little variation, so that all four of us were standing around the vibraphone at the beginning, playing it with four/eight hands -- like an imaginary 'Music for Four Musicians' (a bit reminiscent of the early works of Steve Reich). . . . In return, it was only natural to ask Mick Glossop to make a mix of our concert recording, and quite happily he agreed. He has put together a wonderful and subtle mix, perfectly representing the atmosphere of the concert." Includes liner notes by Mick Glossop and Manuel Göttsching and photographs of the rehearsal and live performance. CD version comes with an eight-page booklet.

SVARTE GREINER Knive LP
Miasmah present a reissue of Svarte Greiner's debut album Knive, originally released on Type in 2006. 11 years since its inception, the surreal and darkly romantic Knive still sounds like a mystery and something that's hard to pin down. Svarte Greiner's debut album feels like a trip into the forest at midnight, with all the sounds and impressions that comes with it. Spiritual, horrific, and fragile in essence, its melancholic core is hard to shake off, and feels as present today as it did back then. While starting off the sub-genre of "acoustic doom" back in 2006, it's difficult to say what else to name it now, with its inspiration and elements from countless genres. The record flows through the dissonant cellos and washed-out vocals of "Ocean Out Of Wood" past the introverted church organs of "The Black Dress", distorted guitars and wooden beats of "The Dining Table" to the operatic finale of "Final Sleep". Everything is scattered, with field recordings from crows, branches, walking, sleeping, rain, wind, and who-knows-what. Knive stands on many feet, wherever they may be. Erik K Skodvin's path as Svarte Greiner have since been dwelling more and more into this world, picking each element apart to focus on them, stretching them out or cutting them down, looping, experimenting, and flooding with reverb -- trying to make time stop and night fall. But for now a re-visit to where it all started seems appropriate. Includes download code; Full-tone color artwork; Edition of 500.

SVARTE GREINER Apart LP
Apart is a mini-album containing a set of cello improvisations, conceived during days of solemn recording in the basement of an unused industrial space outside of Bern, Switzerland. Svarte Greiner on the recording process. "In autumn 2015 I was invited to perform and stay for a week 'residency' at the -- as it turned out one off -- Rebirth Festival in Bern, Switzerland. I was staying at an abandoned farm in the hills, half an hour outside the city with the group of young people responsible for the festival. My room was equipped with a mattress on the floor, some strange paintings, and a lot of spider webs. The view outside was straight into an open field with mostly hills, a forest, and some tents, all of which would be covered in fog every morning. By night I was driven to the venue -- an unused industrial building slightly outside of central Bern. Three of the nights there I was given a cello, a sleeping bag, full access to the building, and especially its big open basement space for recording. . . . Most of the rooms were made into some kind of surreal art object, often recalling a sort of Mad Max post-apocalyptic feel. I realised that getting a clean recording here would be nearly impossible, as the building had a tendency for strange noises, clicks and sounds, seemingly turning itself on and off at random. It was also located right next to the train tracks, which meant I had about ten minutes of quiet in which to record in between the thunder of passing trains -- a lot of recordings were ruined. However, all these off elements somehow had their charm. Having such a big empty space for myself, filled with strange installations and sculptures set up for the festival, was both inspiring and eerie. When not playing and just sitting still, it was unnerving. The lights were on motion detectors and would automatically turn off after five minutes without movement, leaving me alone with nothing but a small lamp and my thoughts. Sometimes I wished my imagination would be less vivid, as I´d have an easier time not imagining all kinds of obscure happenings in the shadows. Then again, this is also something that intrigued me so much that I felt no choice but to investigate closer. . . ." Includes download code.

2017 repress. "The Western world was in the throes of peace, love and flower power as Nigeria descended into Civil War in 1967. The rock scene that developed during the following three years of bloodshed and destruction would come to heal the country, propagate the world-wide ideal of the modern Nigerian, and propel Fela to stardom after conflict ended in 1970. Wake Up You! tells the story of this time, pays homage to these now-forgotten musicians and their struggle, and brings to light the funk and psychedelic fury they created as they wrested free of the ravages of the late 1960s and created thrilling, original Nigerian rock music throughout the 1970s." HARRY PUSSY A Real New England Fuck Up LP
Previously unreleased mid-'90s live recordings of Harry Pussy in peak trio formation, with extensive eye-witness liner notes by Siltbreeze label-head Tom Lax and Tom Carter of Charalambides. Edition of 500."The 1996 Shadow Ring / Harry Pussy / Charalambides 'Rose Watson' tour. . . . There were two vans, three bands, two drivers. Tom Lax was at the helm, rationing the booze and blasting Killed By Death Volume Whatever all through the Midwest. I walked out of a gig in Ypsilanti and tripped on a large dildo. Soundmen held their ears in Cleveland. We rolled out of Rochester (after Adris and my bandmate Jason blew an entire soundcheck screaming insults at each other in Spanish) and the soundman stuck his head in the car and yelled 'don't ever come back!' Byron Coley booked a show in Amherst with an audience of zero. Harry Pussy and Shadow Ring played, we didn't, and everyone was hanging out afterwards in front of the Unitarian Church when the local bus pulled up. Its lone occupant stepped out, looked around, and asked 'Is this where the Harry Pussy show is?' The TT's show, snipped from the end of this tour, was a shambolic near disaster. The fact that a recording survives at all is a minor miracle. We arrived to witness openers the Cotton Kings fleeing the venue after eating a bunch of acid, destroying the PA monitors, and swiping Adris's cymbals, which one tripping, bathrobe-clad member slunk back to return later. . . . Mr. Lax tried to calm me down by feeding me bourbon shots. We played. The PA was shot and we couldn't hear each other. I hurled my guitar across the stage, poured my beer over my head, and threw a pair of slides into the crowd, narrowly missing Wayne Rogers. Harry Pussy took the stage and sandblasted the night into oblivion, while I hid in the van (Mac: 'What the fuck is your problem?') until I was sober enough to attempt to find the Greyhound station and catch the first bus back to Houston. Christina spotted me wandering off and forcibly dragged me back into the club." --Tom Carter

WANGEL Reasons CD
Following on from their debut album Freedom in 2016, here follows Reasons, Wangel's second full-length. Wangel is a collaboration between Peter Wangel and producer Kasper Ejlerskov Leonhardt. Their music revolves around Peter's characteristic, low voice and Kaspers spherical sound. The album Reasons is a collection of wonderful, emotional and very personal songs. Written and performed by Peter Wangel, the lyrics are inspired by multi-award winning, temporary Norwegian writer Karl Ove Knausgård and deal with very personal subjects from his own life. Wangel explains: "The previous releases were about the 'lonely' feelings; the feelings that only existed in me, the feelings I wanted to set free for a long time. The new album is about my life as it is right now; about all the thoughts, expectations, worries and the happiness that comes with a new life as a family. This is a very personal album, but I also hope to express something very ordinary and something that most people can relate to." Also musically the album is a big step forward for Wangel, the melodies are still subtle, but offer more nuances and colors. Kasper Ejlerskov Leonhardt explains: "We have moved to new places on this album. The song 'Faith' is, for example, something very new to the Wangel universe. It has this dusty vinyl sound and goes in a 6/8 beat. The song 'Emotion Pill' has a hip-hop feel to it and is inspired by the sounds of Rihanna and JAY-Z. When Peter brought the idea to the table, I was overjoyed. I have always wanted to do a Wangel song with this type of beat."

VANITY PRODUCTIONS Only The Grains Of Love Remain LP
As the nom de plume of Posh Isolation's co-founder Christian Stadsgaard, there is a deeply private, yet fiercely empathic quality to Only The Grains Of Love Remain. Pirouetting between his collaborative work with Loke Rahbek as Damien Dubrovnik, as well as The Empire Line with Varg, and Iron Sight, to name just Stadsgaard's most recent activity, the inwardness reserved for Vanity Productions is perhaps a necessary step. That the emotive experimentation should generate such a touching soliloquy is an arresting watermark, presenting Only The Grains Of Love Remain as the most eloquent work of the project to date. Following on from Mardini (2016), Only The Grains Of Love Remain takes a delicate and determined route through the terrain of Vanity Productions. Mapped with musique concrète's metrics, there is an uneasy sensation between guilty revulsion and cosmic longing captured in the moments of harmony. Dissolving these small bursts of clarity-through-agony is however not a matter of exploring intensity with volume, or other such devices and motifs. With an almost bitter precision, Stadsgaard continually spikes the grounding compositional elements with unnervingly distant patterns of crisp synthetic alloys. Where weighted, gothic passages are undone into peaceful plateaux, and there is a sense of coveted respite from the body's adrenal chemistry. Temporality is suspended, enough to solicit reflection. As the work coasts the mesh of decision/indecision, witness/actor, falling/flying, however it strikes, one gets the sense that the after-image of noise being articulated is in the end giving way to a greater cathartic broadcast that Only The Grains Of Love Remain documents: life, love, and thought.

BEAST Beast Vol. 1 LP
Pre-Echo Press present Beast, a new project and moniker from acclaimed sound/visual artist, Koen Holtkamp (Mountains). A somewhat radical departure from Holtkamp's previous working modes -- where sound has typically been treated as an edifice to be sculpted -- the works here are far more concerned with the generative possibilities of rhythm. The pieces on Beast developed out of Holtkamp's creation in 2016 of an audio-visual performance that centers on the physical properties of light via 3D laser projections. Rather than simply make a visual element for a piece of music (or vice-versa), Holtkamp created a system that intricately links every aspect of the performance, from the modular synth and virtual instruments to the constantly shifting projections of his "Color Phase" light installations. As form follows function, the sounds created here are by necessity more immediate, more off the cuff, more pattern oriented, and explore a much further range of dynamics than the somewhat amorphous (yet still gorgeous) work. The work harkens back to "Process Music" of the 1970s, being simultaneously minimal and maximal (think Jon Gibson), as well as the lush pop-minimalism of early 1980s (think Soft Verdict), all the while remaining thrillingly contemporary. Beast Vol. 1 was recorded in real time and is presented with minimal edits to divide it into three pieces. It is the slightly rawer and more abandoned of the two volumes. Beast Vol. 2 (PREECHO 008LP) is a more "in studio" version, and as such, retains a more palpable air of elegance while still remaining a side of the same coin.

TERADA PRESENTS, SOICHI Sounds from the Far East 2LP
2017 repress. Compiled by Hunee, Sounds from the Far East features highly sought after material by legendary Japanese house producer Soichi Terada and fellow producers Shinichiro Yokota and Manabu Nagayama. The adventurous, multi-talented Soichi Terada was born in the '60s, and as a child he loved to play on his father's electric organ. Terada majored in computer science and electric organ and after he graduated, he founded his label Far East Recording in 1989, because he couldn't find a label for his compositions at that time. The sound of Far East Recording is very much inspired by American deep house from the early '90s. Soichi Terada went out to parties in the late '80s, where he was equally influenced by house and hip-hop. A few years later, Terada took on producing music by using digital sampling. In the early '90s he occasionally DJed with a DAT player and some reel tapes, instead of using records and turntables. Sounds from the Far East shines light on Soichi Terada's label and consists of material that was originally released in the early '90s. Next to Terada's music, Hunee also selected a few tracks by fellow artist Shinichiro Yokota for this compilation, as well as "Sun Showered," a track based on the incredible Paradise Garage gem called "Sunshower," by Terada and Nami Shimada.

N.A.D. New Aural Discourse 12"
New Aural Discourse holds four fresh, futuristic and far-sighted British takes on Detroit techno by arguably one of British '90s electronic music's best-kept secrets. New Aural Discourse is N.A.D.'s comeback release after over 25 years. The duo Tony Thorpe and Mustafa Ali released one album, 1990's Dawn of a New Age (RH RSS7-LP). Dawn of a New Age was recorded in only a week, inspired by two of Ali's greatest passions: science fiction and his Islamic faith. N.A.D's forgotten debut album became a "must-have" for electronic music collectors. New Aural Discourse is the perfect title for N.A.D.'s new release.

MOCTAR, MDOU Sousoume Tamachek CD
Music for desert picnics. Tuareg guitarist Mdou Moctar delves into his more sensitive side with a minimal studio recording of dreamy ballads. Emotive and introspective, exploring themes of religion, spirituality, and matters of the heart. Songs that are difficult to place, lifted out of half remembered memory for one last time. Mdou Moctar (né Mahamadou Souleymane) hails from the town of Tchintabaraden, Niger, a tiny village on the edge of the Sahara. Playing in the style of Tuareg guitar made popular in the West by Tinariwen and Bombino, Mdou is one of the few original singer/songwriters willing to experiment and push the boundaries of the genre at home and abroad. In 2012, Mdou relocated from his village to Agadez, the center of Niger's guitar scene, and formed his band. Over the past years, he has become well-known on the international circuit, playing high energy electrified music in festivals and clubs across Europe and North America. In 2013, he released his first international album, Afelan, rocking and raw sessions recorded live in Niger. In 2015, he starred in the first ever Tuareg language film, Akounak Tedalat Taha Tazoughai (SAHEL 028DVD), a Nigerien remake of Purple Rain (1984). In the past years, Tuareg rock music, particularly that of Niger, has gotten faster, with wavering guitar solos, rapid fire drums, and heavy distortion. For Mdou, this was not always the case. Self-taught in a religious region that eschewed the guitar, Mdou was forced to learn music in secret. And when he did begin to play, there were no weddings or festivities. His early oeuvre was developed to play at informal private sessions with his friends. In these "takits" or picnics, Mdou and his friends would pass the lazy days together sitting under a tree, drinking tea, laughing, and singing songs. For Sousoume Tamachek, Mdou revisits this "music for desert picnics", taking his compositions from his youth, and bringing them to the studio. From love ballads ("Nikali Talit"), religious praise ("Ilmouloud"), to life counsel ("Amidini"), the songs are intensely personal, both in content and in structure. Constructed around the guitar, Mdou plays everything on the album in lush layered overdubs, singing both call and response vocals, playing rhythm guitar, and drumming on the calabash. Produced in collaboration with Christopher Kirkley (Sahel Sounds) and long-time associate Jesse Johnson (Boomarm Nation), the light touch pays respect to the origin of these ballads.

ATKINSON, FELICIA Hand In Hand 2LP
Repressed; Double LP version. Félicia Atkinson's new full-length album, Hand In Hand follows the highly-acclaimed A Readymade Ceremony (SHELTER 055CD/LP, 2015), and her collaboration with Jefre Cantu-Ledesma, Comme Un Seul Narcisse (SHELTER 070LP, 2016). Composed over 2016 at EMS and at home in Brittany, Hand In Hand could be considered as the most ambitious body of work recorded by the French musician and artist. Strident modular sounds tear apart minimal beats and drones; Fictional stories told by a voice slowly become reality. Hand In Hand is meant to be a moment of common thinking and listening, in its diversity and abstraction. In the same way a sci-fi novel by Philip K. Dick or a sculpture by Guy Mees can be perceived: trivial, sensitive, and mysterious at the same time. "I'm Following You" is a bleached romantic ballad for Fender Rhodes that could be the ending title of a martian love story, whereas "Visnaga" praises the resources of a desert plant through asmr voices, field recordings, and evasive chords. "A House A Dance A Poem" is a feminist hymn composed as a pyramidal structure, referring, at the same time, to the A-frame houses, the yoga position of the triangle, the first letter of the Roman alphabet, and the feminine sex. In the closing song, "No Fear But Anticipation", Atkinson offers an open-hearted plea about the existentialist necessity of finding desire even when the times seem too dark to think about it. A telepathic and non-scholastic anthem for Don Delillo, Joan Didion, and Jean Paul Sartre. The final Buchla sounds that close the record seem to deliver an unspeakable message that only birds and aliens could transcript. The echo of the '80s sci-fi anxious aethetics resonates with today's transparency of digital sounds in the whole record. The cohabitation of simple midi textures and historical Serge and Buchla signals are convoked and confronted together by a voice. The human instrument appears here as the epicenter of the recordings, giving the other instruments a gravitational point. Joan La Barbara, Robert Ashley, or Delia Derbyshire are the main influences of Atkinson in their own way of inviting fiction and abstraction as the essential materials of composition. For Hand In Hand, Félicia Atkinson used different sources for the lyrics and scores of her tracks: house plant instruction books, old issues of Desert Magazine, architecture manuals, JG Ballard and K. Dick's books, as well as her own poetry.

Together as Kit N C.L.A.W.S., Clayton and Hock's sound signatures merge seamlessly. "Urn Of Stilled Sorrows" sees deep, dubby chords painted against a spectral backdrop of flute and ghastly wind. Soon a chugging mid-tempo beat appears: it's as atmospheric as it is irresistibly groovy. "Mariners And Masts" showcases a rubbery acid squelch, setting it against a simple-but-unforgettable synthesizer melody. "The Skies Themselves" is a deeply affecting haunted jam that eschews beats in favor of undulating, mesmerizing tones.

SEVERAL DEFINITIONS Reborn After The Road CD
After showcasing his knack for emotive productions via various EPs throughout his career, the Swiss artist Several Definitions now reveals his first full-length album. It should come as no surprise that the artist found familiarity in what he calls the "Berlin style" of electronic music and notably, that of Oliver Koletzki's Stil vor Talent. Reborn After The Road is an intense and emotional affair, consisting of 14 tracks crafted using field and live recordings, switching between analog and digital to mould a sonic atmosphere that emblazons the artist's core ethos. Although the personal experience that sparked the inspiration for the LP is far from pleasant, Several Definitions' style is audibly resolute. "Reborn After The Road", the album's eponymous track, creates a fitting intro for the healing process that is to follow. Its airy pads and majestic strings sonically stand at the epicenter of the expressive album. Several Definitions continues to explore these sounds on vaporous slices like "Pontcéard 32" or the more acidical "Last Breath". The mellifluous, feminine vocals of LaMeduza on "Learn To Feel" and "Her", as well as Spanish singer Goldsun's crooner talents on the introspective "Trust", on the other hand, showcase Several Definitions' ability to work the human voice into his musical explorations. Taking introspection one step further towards darker realms, "Senelity" then feels like a rite of passage into the deeper and more intense segment at the album's core. "Over You" briefly signals a turning point, with its alarm-like synths and grave leads, which is then followed by the glitchy resistance on "Modular Spaces". "The Escape" presents itself as a natural occurrence after the string of turbulent, sometimes conflicting feelings -- it is a final attempt at evading the depths of animosity. Next, "Dancing With The Valkyrie" comes in as a determined resolution, introducing a new wave of more enduring, complacent moods, also evident on "Help" and "Don't Stop To Fall". Preparing the exit by way of straight-to-the-point techno, "Target Topic" rolls into "Her", the final piece of the emotional puzzle. Conceptually, Reborn After The Road is the sonic vessel for a cathartic process, conjuring up atmospheres reminiscing of different phases in life: childhood, the strength of unconditional love, and the inevitable sorrow that accompanies death. The humanity of the emotions on show explains the music's universal appeal, as Several Definitions offers the listener a glimpse into an artistic healing process.

GLOTMAN, YAIR ELAZAR Compound LP
LP version. Under his guises Blessed Initiative and Ketev, as well as his own name, composer and sound artist Yair Elazar Glotman has explored extended techniques and processes to forge new sonic textures and musical forms. Compound picks up where the previous solo work under Glotman's own name -- Études (SUB 013LP, 2015) -- left off. The acoustic sound palette has now expanded from solo contrabass into a trio including pianist Rieko Okuda and percussionist Marcello Silvio Busato. Glotman guides the trio into utilizing sounds from the edges of their instruments' abilities -- arguably mere byproducts of harmony -- and through improvisation, repetition, and post-production, conjures new sonic bodies over two side-long pieces. His guidelines for each improvisation gave the players autonomy to emphasize the microscopic details of certain sounds: the shudder of a piano key, the hum of a cymbal, the incidental click of a plucked contrabass string. The recordings were then layered and reformulated by Glotman into two separate structures to complete the composition process. Both "Veil" and "Revelate" utilize the full spectral potential of each instrument, revealing new rhythmic patterns and harmonic content in the process. Taking Glotman's microscopic focus on instrument noises, using Études as a starting point, the trio on Compound ultimately bring into question both density and contrast, rhythm itself losing its stricter structures and becoming a purely pattern-based driving force in the music. The resultant unit contradicts and opposes itself, all sorts of clashing rhythms and melodies coexisting within the body of the two compositions of evolving sonic architecture. Based in Berlin, Yair Elazar Glotman is a classically-trained musician and sound artist. Besides previous works on Subtext including Études, a collaborative score with James Ginzburg's 2014 experimental film Nimbes (SUB 012EP, 2014), and the eponymous debut of his Blessed Initiative project (SUB 009CD/019LP, 2016), Glotman has released music via Opal Tapes and others under the nom de plume Ketev.

SIROM I Can Be A Clay Snapper CD
Hailing from Slovenia, Sirom play vividly textured instrumental folk musics in which handmade global instrumentation meets fearless sound exploration. Samo Kutin and Ana Kravanja first met at the improvisational music workshops conducted by leading Slovenian improviser Tomaz Grom and Japanese improvisational percussionist Seijiro Murayama. Other shared influences include classical minimalism and global musics. The couple eventually formed the kalimba-based duo Najoua, before forming Sirom with Iztok Koren. The band's emergent sound oscillates between a wide array of acoustic folk sounds and contemporary post-rock meditations, often drifting from improvisation to structured composition and then back. The trio describes it as "imaginary folk" or "folk from a parallel universe." According to Kutin, the guiding concepts of their music-making are: "To play on acoustic instruments, to work with repetition and a common sound. Each of us can play a simple thing, but the overall result is that a complex thing comes to life. The quality of sound depends on the combination of the instruments and that's why we modify and prepare instruments or create our own." As an avid sound-seeker, Kutin began to develop an interest in building instruments out of everyday objects like drawers, computer boxes and other "junk" (as he lovingly calls his creations), in addition to re-tooling the ones he brought back from his globetrotting adventures (which have included personal encounters with local musicians in India, Morocco, Mali, Greece, and elsewhere). In the little village of Lesno Brdo, tucked in the rolling hills six miles south of Ljubljana, Kravanja and Kutin organize music performances and festivals on a farm they rent, and divide their time between music-making and vegetable farming. With I Can Be A Clay Snapper, the trio have devised a work of fearlessly textured sonic landscapes both linked to and unbound by the past and present, geography and tradition, the real and imagined. Hypnotic, otherworldly, and epic, Sirom's music moves like the restless waters of their homeland. No matter how hushed or slow it may seem, it is never standing still. Iztok Koren: banjo, three-string banjo, bass drum, percussion, chimes, balafon, objects; Ana Kravanja: violin, viola, ribab, cünbüs, balafon, ngoma drum, mizmar, objects, voice; Samo Kutin: lyre, balafon, one-string bass, frame drums, bra?, gongoma, mizmar, objects, voice.

NICELY, NICK Sleep Safari CD
Sleep Safari is the new album from indie electronic artist Nick Nicely. The first single "Ghostdream", labeled as "Absolutely gorgeous" and "Euphoria" by BBC6, heralds new horizons for psych legend. Sleep Safari goes further into electronics while continuing the artist's psychedelic journey, creating a unique pop juxtaposition. There's also all the usual twists and turns, tuneful inventions and abstractions so revered after Nicely's previous releases on Captured Tracks, Cherry Red, EMI, and Burger Records. Further to the success of "Ghostdream", with album release and gigs in addition to his forthcoming Hollywood soundtrack debut, 2017 will be quite a year for him. Nick has often looked beyond the obvious in matters electronic from early electro-psych fantasies like "DCT Dreams" (1981) and "Hilly Fields" (2012) through to his acclaimed second album, 2014's eerie epic Space Of A Second. "Utterly remarkable . . . profoundly psychedelic" --Clash Magazine. Tapete Records present the latest chapter in Nick's sonic journey. Sleep Safari is an homage to unconsciousness, lyrically exploring sleep's mysteries through a surrealist eye. It opens with the line "3am, you wake, the dream begins". Suddenly you're underwater, hold your psychic breath... it's a Sleep Safari. Includes a remix by Grasscut.

KOLOVOS, PETER New Bodies LP
2009 release. Bruce Russell (The Wire) on New Bodies in August 2009: "Peter Kolovos, guitarist in Los Angeles trio Open City, presents here three tracks of electric guitar improvisations. In New Bodies, his first solo release, Kolovos lets rip with all the skronk and blurt he's been holding in for the last decade, in tiny, tightly gated segments. His sound vocabulary is very broad, and his control of texture and timing is masterful. Using equalisation, reverb, envelope shaping and volume control... He rapidly opens and closes the volume window on a dizzying series of extended guitar techniques, creating the inescapable impression of Derek Bailey covering The Residents' Duck Stab. If that won't sell records, I don't know what will. This electrifying effect is enhanced by the crisp digital recording and the superb D&M pressing job -- every clang and buzz is right up in your grill. The packaging continues the good work. The cover features a magnificent photograph of the guitarist taken by Joyce Campbell using the mid-19th century tin type process, which requires a sitting of over three minutes. The resulting image is as physically 'time based' as the recording it encloses, and has the distinctive look of a Victorian death mask -- no 'posing' or even facial expression is possible. In this regard the cover is an exact metaphor of the recording - what you perceive is exactly what you get."Music, production, design: Peter Kolovos; Photography: Joyce Campbell; Mastering: Rashad Becker, Dubplates & Mastering, Berlin; Pressed at Pallas, Germany. 180 gram vinyl; Includes download code; Full-color heavy metallic tip-on cover.

SERIO, ELISABETTA Sedici CD
Sensitive, discreet, reflective, Elisabetta Serio instills in her music a double aesthetics alchemy: in her pianism melds, with a measured balance, an elegiac lyricism to a light rhythmic ripple. Sedici ("16"), edited by Via Veneto Jazz, includes in its title a lucky and dear numerology to the Neapolitan pianist. In her new work, Elisabetta gives her listeners a new prospective and with the trio piano formula trial, and proposes nine original tracks in a jazz key led by a suspended, poetic, and dream-like atmosphere in which she does not scorn any referee to neither the "masters", nor the world icons of contemporary music. Elisabetta's compositional liveliness and pianistic lexicon are exalted by the empathetic groove of Marco de Tilla's double bass and Leonardo de Lorenzo's percussive drumming. They are both comfortable with a symbiotic team game which mixes simultaneously, an indirect abstraction and a common feeling of visceral tension. Sarah Jane Morris's voice in the world form of "Afrika", Fulvio Sigurtà's trumpet playing a delicate melody in "Il Cielo Sotto Di Me", and Jerry Popolo's tenor saxophone playing in a funky mode "Rumors", enhances the trio chromatic palette. This gives an additional value to the record, which has an enchanting Mediterranean essence and synthesis of the multiple and gratifying experience lived by the leader (above all Mr. P) dedicated to her mentor and friend Pino Daniele.

The quintet recorded a handful of marvelous albums between 1967 and 1971, mainly under the Bobby Hutcherson name on Blue Note, but they recorded one album on Chess and two for Mainstream Records. A New Shade Of Blue, recorded in Los Angeles where the quintet was based, is one of their best albums and has never been reissued outside of Japan. TERRY, BUDDY Awareness CD
Wewantsounds present a reissue of Buddy Terry's Awareness, originally released in 1971. Following the highly-acclaimed release of Feeling Good (WWSCD 005CD/WWSLP 005LP, 2017) and Inner Peace (WWSCD 007CD/ WWSLP 007LP, 2017) compilations, Wewantsounds present the reissue of two superb classic albums as the first releases in their Mainstream Records Original Classics series: Awareness, presented here, and Harold Land's 1971 album A New Shade Of Blue (WWSCD 008CD/WWSLP 008LP). Awareness was Buddy Terry's first album for Mainstream Records, one of the three he recorded for Bob Shad's label. This is pure, undiluted spiritual jazz that is both deep and funky. Prior to the release of Awareness, Terry had recorded a couple of soul jazz albums for Prestige Record, Electric Soul in 1967 and Natural Soul in 1968. Terry then went under-the-radar until the recording of Awareness, an undisputed buried treasure. 1971 saw him picked up by the ever active Bob Shad who had just decided to produce a new crop of young jazzmen in tune with the sonic revolution of the time, think John Coltrane's Eastern influences and Miles Davis's experiments that took from the music Jimi Hendrix and Sly Stone. Awareness is a pure result of this incredible blend of influences, which saw labels like Black Jazz or Strata East transform jazz into a hip and cool genre adorned by the Woodstock generation. Featuring a glittering line-up composed of Strata East co-founder Stanley Cowell on piano and Rhodes, Cecil Bridgewater on trumpet, Buster Williams and Victor Gaskin on bass, Roland Prince on guitar, Mickey Roker on drums, and a young Mtume on percussion. Together they play a superb mix of deep and funky jazz in the best tradition of the genre. Both hypnotic ("Kamili") and funky (check Cowell's signature tune "Abscretions"), Awareness is a pure delight graced by Shad's tight production values. It will ravish all lovers of early '70s spiritual jazz. Buddy Terry recorded another two great albums for Mainstream Records and played on Art Blakey's superb Child's Dance (1972), gracing the record with his wonderful soprano sax playing. Awareness proves that Buddy Terry is a great player worth (re)discovering. Includes never-before-seen session photos by Raymond Ross and new liner notes by French journalist Jacques Denis (Liberation, Superfly). CD version includes two bonus tracks, single versions of "Babylon" and "Stealin' Gold".

LAND, HAROLD A New Shade Of Blue LP
LP version. Gatefold sleeve. Wewantsounds present a reissue of Harold Land's A New Shade Of Blue, originally released in 1971. Following the highly-acclaimed release of Feeling Good (WWSCD 005CD/WWSLP 005LP, 2017) and Inner Peace (WWSCD 007CD/ WWSLP 007LP, 2017) compilations, Wewantsounds present the reissue of two superb classic albums as the first releases in their Mainstream Records Original Classics series: A New Shade Of Blue, presented here, and Buddy Terry's 1971 album Awareness (WWSCD 009CD/WWSLP 009LP). Wewantsounds has gone back to the original negative to reconstruct the original artworks and will add many jaw dropping never-seen photo sessions Recorded in 1971, this beautiful Harold Land record produced by Bob Shad, is nothing but a Harold Land-Bobby Hutcherson quintet album in disguise. Featuring a superb line up comprising Buster Williams on bass and Billy Hart on drums -- the rhythm section of Herbie Hancock's Mwandishi (1971) sextet -- the session is augmented by Bill Henderson on piano and Fender Rhodes and Mtume on percussion. Together they create a superb soundscape featuring the quintet's trademark sound, both spiritual and serene, with Land's unmistakable sax playing and Bobby Hutcherson's modal touch. The highlight of the album is the long hypnotic track "Mtume", a deep, slow burner displaying the group's fantastic interplay. Includes unissued session photos taken by LA photographer Dick Sanders and new liner notes by radio DJ and renowned record digger, Sam Barbatano (Sunday Jazz, KTRU Houston). CD version includes a bonus track, a beautiful eight-minute outtake "Dark Mood" briefly issued in 1974 on a Mainstream compilation.

TERRY, BUDDY Awareness LP
LP version. Gatefold sleeve. Wewantsounds present a reissue of Buddy Terry's Awareness, originally released in 1971. Awareness was Buddy Terry's first album for Mainstream Records, one of the three he recorded for Bob Shad's label. This is pure, undiluted spiritual jazz that is both deep and funky. GENERAL LEVY We Progressive CD
After more than 20 years of stage experience, General Levy is back with We Progressive, his newest album, which he himself has called "the best album of my career." General Levy, veteran of the UK music scene, grew up with reggae and black music influences. Promptly, he decided to take a stab at writing and then went on to singing. He managed to develop his own musical universe, inspired by the fast style culture. At the age of 19, he had already gained international recognition and been awarded several prizes such as the best reggae album, the best single for "Heat" and the best UK MC. General Levy composed his new album We Progressive in a specific way. For the first time, he surrounded himself with numerous musicians in order to create an eclectic and accomplished work. He decided to collaborate with Papa Style & Baldas, a French instrumentalist duo. To these two riddim makers was added the DJ and producer Goloom, who was put in charge of the artistic production. At last, he decided to work with Mayra, a young Brazilian singer from the duo Mayra & Mr.Mow, who brings her soft touch to the chorus. Through this new work of art, this unusual artist provides his fans with his vocal fluency and compositions as various as conceptual. We Progressive travels between reggae and different influences: funk and hip-hop in "Blow" and "The Love We Got", a subtle mix of rock and raga in "Flipping And Flapping", and Latin influences with the song "Bomba Rumba". But General Levy doesn't forget his roots and delights his fans with the wonderful acoustic song "Friend In Need". Also features Danakil and Big Red.
