BICKNELL, STEVE Mind Patterns 12"
A three-track EP of brand new music on Steve Bicknell's own 6dimensions imprint. This is frenetic high-octane techno of the highest pedigree, with added conceptual ideas based around Steve's thoughts on human mind patterns. Bouncy bass, repetitive funk, hiss, and acid squelch drive "Patterns Of Suppression" and "Preset Minds" has an engine-like, propulsive and cyclic quality akin to a motor or a speedboat bouncing fast over waves. "Vein Injection", a hard, fast electric shock, is essentially the audio equivalent of being trepanned into a higher state -- by a power drill to the cranium.

BAD STREAM Bad Stream 2LP
Double LP version. Red, transparent vinyl; Gloss HQ print. Having grown up with and on the internet, Martin Steer (1986) has transformed its pull into a concept album that is just as immediate and intangible as the digital world. Bad Stream is guitars and machines vanishing in the spaces between Radiohead and Nine Inch Nails only to reemerge amidst ambient, noise, and drone. Bad Stream, then, is his modus operandi -- a hybrid soundtrack to the feelings of resignation, isolation, and cynicism within neoliberal cyberspace and to that strangely numbing comfort of bodies transmuting into zeros and ones in real time. "I look at my phone even when I play guitar," says Martin Steer, "and that isn't even entirely voluntary. The 2010s really changed my perception of how digital technologies and social media affect me as a musician. Through Bad Stream I want to make sense of this particular kind of anxiety, and to use sensory overstimulation as a way to develop an independent and progressive musical language." The past seven years took Martin and his laptop and guitar from Berlin to Mexico and Nepal and, as a founding member of Frittenbude, into the German charts and to various festival stages. And yet, Bad Stream is a true "Berlin album", out of Friedrichshain, Neukölln, and Kreuzberg and will be released on Martin Steer's own label ANTIME. It was recorded with real drums and programmed beats, with shoegaze guitars, acid baselines, piano, smartphone synths, violins, field recordings from the darknet and his voice, whose hopeless timbre conveys reflections on systems, the future, drugs, people, and his own place. In his ever-expanding A/V live shows and in the music videos, this is supplemented by complex visuals.

HORSZOWSKI, MIECZYSLAW Vatican Recital & Beethoven Masterworks 2CD
Classical music was created by geniuses, and the lucky few who were near them could witness how inimitable they were and are. Beyond these individuals there arose a proliferation of hypertrophied egos, management, commercialization, and other menaces to art. Mieczys?aw Horszowski performed for ninety-one years and was mostly overlooked by the record industry. Hundreds of Beethoven recordings fill the marketplace yet this pianist's teacher was guided by someone close to Beethoven. His mother had also been taught by Chopin's assistant so again, he is very close to music's origins. No wonder Horszowski could fearlessly project the improvisational fire within Beethoven's variations, some of which resemble what would later inhabit jazz and ragtime. It takes a genius to play another genius's creations and whenever Horszowski played a composer, his body language altered to channel their sounds and speak their unique languages. In 1940 Horszowski was eager to get out of fascist Europe and gave a recital for Vatican Radio. Wondering if the network was as careful as their library, Arbiter traced their archivist who said that it was only a few days earlier that day a pile of reel-to-reel tapes were about to be disposed when a pianist noticed Horszowski's name written on the spine of a box. It was rescued and survived a playback for digitalization. The machine was new technology, fresh from Nazi Germany. News of its discovery provoked a New York Times article: "Rare Treasure Found in Vatican Trash." With Horszowski (1892-1993), all that he plays is new music. Horszowski's genius drew on these deep musical currents and was furthered by his attending Henri Bergson's lectures on philosophy in Paris, all growing into an art that brought classical music to its highest level. Works from Rome include Chopin's 1st Ballade, Funeral March, Berceuse, Impromptu no.1, Liszt's Two Legends, and a Franck chorale, all newly restored. In addition, stunning New York and Philadelphia concert performances of Beethoven's Waldstein Sonata, Eroica & Diabelli Variations have come to light and are published here for the first time. Recorded 1940-1975.

HENNIES, SARAH Embedded Environments LP
Through a remarkable and singular body of work, over the course of the last decade, the composer and percussionist Sarah Hennies has slowly emerged as one of the definitive voices of her generation. Initially coming to focus as a member of Austin's experimental music scene during the early 2000s, before relocating to upstate New York, with a delicate, clattering grace, she has continuously offered vision, conceptual armature, crucial understanding for the contemporary proximity of avant-garde, and experimental practice. Entirely of her moment, she defies what we know and expect, owing allegiance to none. Hennies has been darting around the edges of modern composition for years, but that world has never been an entirely comfortable fit, nor is it the best framework and context within which to approach her work. She is better understood in the proximity of figures like Jim O'Rourke, a creator of a countercultural music, which incorporates everything, while owing loyalty to none. Hennies could equally be framed with composers like Steve Reich, Arthur Russell, Julius Eastman, and Mary Jane Leach, all of whom struggled to create more inclusive musical hybrids, attacking the institutions as they stood. As these figures once were, Hennies's position within the contemporary landscape is challenging and requires work to understand. Her music isn't always what it seems. What is unquestionable is that it is entirely of this moment and not a product of appropriation or pastiche. Comprised of two site-specific compositions -- "Foragers" and "Embedded Environments" -- recorded in a silo in Buffalo, New York, these recordings are a crowning moment within the long arc of Hennies's practice. Each work is composed for a quartet of percussionists -- Jason Bauers, Tim Feeney, and Bob Fullex, with Hennies contributing on vibraphone and percussion. While "Foragers" and "Embedded Environments" are products of Hennies's quest for elemental meaning and relationships within sound -- those which lay beyond traditional understandings of structure, beat, and tone, here there is a third and unfamiliar actor in play: the space itself. Activated by the silo for which they were composed, Hennies's broken, staggering rhythms and resonances are offered new freedom through a seductive Trojan horse, pushing them toward even more complex and jarring depths. "Foragers" and "Embedded Environments" delves into a realm of ideas, proximity, and place, offering a new vision for our sonic present, and what may be to come. Edition of 300.

154 Wherever You Go, I Will Follow 12"
Boomkat Editions offer a major new work by Jochem Peteri's cultishly adored 154 alias as part of the Boomkat Editions 12X12 series. Originally conceived to soundtrack an installation by Delta (the artist behind stacks of Delsin's label artwork), the 22-minute piece's swell of amniotic techno ambience has been sliced here in two parts playing at 45rpm, capturing the billowing but viscous harmonic dynamics of one of 154's most impressive works. Wherever You Go, I Will Follow finds Peteri wholeheartedly embracing the harmony between analog and digital realms in his studio and taking inspiration from the birth of his second child.

YOUNG, DENNIS Synthesis: Electronic Music 1984-1988 LP
LP version. Dennis Young is best known as the percussionist of the New York band Liquid Liquid, which is known for their piece "Cavern" from 1983, which in turn became very well-known because Grandmaster Flash sampled it and used it as the basis for their hit "White Lines". But Young was more than just a member of the band, he produced plenty of his own music, much of it reflecting his passion for analog electronics. He was fascinated by the pioneers of the genre. In 2016 Bureau B released Wave (BB 219CD/LP), a collection of pieces Young had issued on cassettes between 1985-1988. Synthesis, by contrast, features tracks from 1984-1988 which have never been previously released. But let's allow Dennis Young to tell his story himself: "My love for electronic music goes back to the late '70s when I decided to buy my first synthesizer, a rare used vintage Davolisint made in Italy, after seeing Keith Emerson perform live with Emerson Lake Palmer. This led to my discovery of more electronic music artists using synthesizers such as Klaus Schulze, Tim Blake, Larry Fast, Edgar Froese, Brian Eno, and Cluster just to name a few. My musical challenge was then to create my own electronic music using this instrument. After experimenting in the early '80s with live recordings using a reel-to-reel tape machine I purchased my first multi-track recording system in 1984. When Liquid Liquid was on hiatus I was able to devote full time to this music and do professional recordings at my home studio in Edison, New Jersey. I added more synthesizers to include a Korg Mono/Poly, a Korg Poly Six, a Moog Rogue, and later the Korg M1. Every track was put through various delay and reverb units and I added vocal parts and along with guitar where I felt it was needed. Synthesis is the follow up to Wave released on Bureau B in 2016. At the time I used the above mentioned assortment of analog synthesizers to create the music you will hear on this recording. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did putting it together."

SSALIVA WYIN LP
Collapsing Market host this captivating set of quixotic ambient scenes realized by Ssaliva, a Belgian electronic musician with sterling form for Leaving Records, Ekster, Vlek, and Purple Tape Pedigree (PTP), among others. Pulling together blink-and-miss material from his Bandcamp along with previously unheard works, WYIN coherently highlights a broader period of work than any of Ssaliva's other releases, framing a probing and adventurous spirit at work in its element; modern digital ambient composition. Coming off the back of Collapsing Market's reissue of Tschashm-e-Del, an archival radio play of Persian Classical music conducted by the label's grandfather, Morteza Hannaneh, their first Ssaliva entry keeps the label outlook as mutable as ever with a natural focus on atmosphere and feelings connoting existential angst and solitary psychedelia. It's a product of its contemporary environment, which, more than ever, is bleakly electronic and at the mercy of rabid socio-economics, as symbolized in sleeve's illustration of a financial trader's open palm, contrasting with the front cover's zoomed-in image of blood-spattered textures. In six parts he just about keeps his head above the waves and acres of negative space, firstly buoyed by choral voices in "Danger Came Smiling", then against the discordant fulgurite of "Hell/Home", which both make the sublime timbral relief of a that much more effective, in the same way that the hyperreal, acrid sensation of "For All I Care", the crystalline dimensions of "2drown" and the spiraling, elusive complexity of "B" reflect and express the modern world with an intangible accuracy perhaps best compared to Arca. Vinyl master and lacquer cut by Helmut Erler at Dubplates & Mastering, Berlin. Edition of 300.

SATORI Yam 12"
The fourth instalment on DGTL Records is an EP by Satori. "Fauna" is an organic, melody-driven arrangement with mesmerizing vocals and playful synths. This combination of layers gives the track an almost hypnotizing effect. "Yam" is an homage to an identical named festival in Mexico. Containing several layered atmospheric harmonies and a more present bassline, it's like a soundtrack for the festival. Satori provides a remix of French producer Sahalé's track "Magharibi". The remix keeps all the interesting elements of the original, but twists the bassline and the arrangement, while adding a few smaller soundscapes.

CHEVEL Always Yours LP
Chevel gives the prism-pushers at Mumdance and Logos' Different Circles label their first album release with Always Yours; a slanted new take on the "weightless" paradigm, floating somewhere between headspaces associated with the styles of Lee Gamble, Actress, and Logos. Paradoxically the longest and yet most minimalistic release on Different Circles to date, Always Yours says its piece in succinct yet expansive terms, rendering precisely tooled rhythms and technoid motifs in acres of suspenseful emulated space in a way that connects the brutally efficient dynamic of late '90s tech-step with a Raster Noton-like appreciation of pointillist reduction. In that imagined space Chevel moves like a Soviet gymnast or prototype robot fluidly executing a demanding routine full of intricate, rigid steps. From the ambient airlock of "One Evening In July" he pulls off the aerobic mid-air swiftness of "The Call", which comes off like a syncopated Sleeparchive workout, before twisting into the knotted quasi-step of "Bullet" and stepping into hyperspace on "Arp 2600". Another ambient interlude "Warming Bath" returns the LP to balmier states, before the jagged pulse of "Data Recovery" pulls back into the dance like a virulent Alva Noto piece, and "Dem Drums" pitch to the rave's darker side, but ultimately the lushly self-explanatory "Underwater" and "Always Yours" keep the LP hovering around the edge of ecstasy and the abyss with a grasp of heady, day-after feelings known to ravers the world over. EMERALD WEB/SAM MCLOUGHLIN & ALISON COOPER Garden Of Mirrors / Supernatural Lancashire Volume Two LP
2013 release. Warehouse find. The ongoing Disposable Music library subscription series is a series which pools some of the best emotive, comprehensive, previously unavailable instrumental music from the unmarked archives of experimental artists within the expanding Finders Keepers family and presents it as a series of limited uniformed archival vinyl discs. With unlimited entry to the archives belonging to names like Ciani, Spoerri, Rollin, Epple, Korzynski, and Massey, Disposable Music have taken the best in unadulterated, underexposed and unattached mood music and given these homeless compositions a place, purpose and time to thrive. The archive of Kat Epple in Miami is a well-preserved timeline that documents early analog experimental synth modules and the development of Silicon Valley music technology into the 1980s and beyond. It also includes a wealth of music produced and manufactured with her partner, synthesis, and flautist Bob Stohl. The Garden Of Mirrors is a collection of music made for ethereal planetarium performances and a series of laser shows which earned the duo of Kat and Bob the collective moniker of Emerald Web. These multi-purpose recordings remastered from rare tapes typify the duo's unique ambient sound that would win them a firm fixture in the hearts of a generation of new age devotees and proto-techno enthusiasts who operated and survived outside the parameters of the major music industry that dominated the era. Distributed by mail, during concerts, or in health food and book stores the privately pressed instrumental music of Emerald Web would also make its way in the films of astronomer Carl Sagan and other natural history educational programs. Here you will find a span of sythesizer soundscapes ranging from keyboards, Lyricon wind synths, modular synths, digital sequencers, and organic percussion. Following one of the most requested titles on the first Disposable Music collection Sam Mcloughlin and Alison Cooper's Supernatural Lancashire 2 brings a wide selection of self-made acoustic and electronic instruments to their Northern rehearsal room to blend semi-improvised melody and syncopated mechanical folk -- evoking sonic images of bygone rural industry, religious corruption, hallucinogenic medicines, scenes from classic pastoral UK horror films and cautionary European fakelore. Composing the type of instrumental music that simply does not exist outside of a theatrical or cinematic brief the self-initiated and tightly twisted music of Supernatural Lancashire comes from a genuine creative place which is rarely explored with such beguiling results within the oft blinkered parameters of modern handmade music.

SPOERRI/MASSONIX, BRUNO Hommage Au Fromage / Hollingsville LP
Hommage Au Frommage is perhaps one of the best titles to have ever been in a dusty box of a quarter inch tape reel. However, without a crumb of irony the music that appears on this session also ranks highly in Finders Keepers list of archival triumphs. An early '70s conceptual jazz pop album combining dulcimers, harps, a Jew's harp and what sounds like a tap dancer instantly earns itself its own protective niche shared only by certain vintage recordings by Vladimir Cosma and The Roundtable -- but when accentuated by a heavy weight back beat and the added information that it was commissioned by the national Swiss Cheese Consortium this record commands further inspection and repeat listens. Starting with all the traits of a moody Morricone or Bruno Nicolai giallo soundtrack and breaking into a healthy cross section of modal jazz, tape manipulation, electronic grinds, Brazilian accordion, and (dare it be said) b-boy break beats, Hommage Au Frommage by Swiss electronic jazz pioneer Bruno Spoerri is a record quite unlike anything else. The music found on Graham Massey's Hollingsville record was originally created for a twelve-part radio series on Resonance 104.4 FM. The series, Hollingsville, was conceived and presented by writer Ken Hollings and would focus each week on a different aspect of man's historical relationship with technology. Informal discussions with a series of specially invited guests were accompanied by custom-built theme tunes by Massey, His approach was intentionally leaning toward the Bakelite and hot valve nostalgia of some forgotten Expo or World's Fair. The resulting Hollingsville soundtrack exercises Massey's authentic knowledge of original analog machines in their rawest form and triumphantly draws comparisons with the likes of Henk Badings, Oscar Sala, and Kid Balton from the pre-synth era of electric keyboards and tape manipulation. "Neptune" features Seaming To.

ELG Vu Du Dome LP
Mutant troubadour Laurent Gérard, aka Èlg, makes an ideal addition to the misfits at Editions Gravats with Vu Du Dôme, a patently strange record resembling a sort of cryptic opera or the dramaturgy of a waking dream. Leading listeners up the garden path after the Mauve Zone album (NP 021LP, 2016), the French-Belgian artist's latest album feels like a stroll around a topiary maze at twilight on a warm night, with Èlg acting as a spectral protagonist narrating/ranting in first person while a supporting cast including Catherine Hershey, Borja Flames, and Ernest Bergez only make the trip more unfathomable. Forming a bridge between improbable dimensions of musique concrète and chanson, or electro-acoustic and literary spheres, on Vu Du Dôme Èlg riddles his music to life with literal and metaphorical take on sound poetry; blending French language vocals with glossolalic babble against quietly enigmatic backdrops whose low, shifting lighting and mid-fi resolution lends them to comparison with illusive theater stage designs as much as the overgrown niches of the imagination explored by Luc Ferrari or Èlg's Reines D'Angleterre bandmate Ghédalia Tazartès before him. A dusty revenant, an epileptic bard, a peaceful messenger: Èlg plays all those roles simultaneously. Combining pointedly purposed production and cryptic incantation, he acts as a souterrain psycho-pomp relaying energies from one reality to another, taking care not to stray too far explicitly in either direction and hold his ground ambiguously with the nous of an ancient Greek play or the kind of pathos and logic likely to baffle a computer. Taken in context of Roope Eronen's artwork -- a naive illustration of smiling cone faces on a bouncy castle -- each listener's perception of Vu Du Dôme is bound to differ from the next in an all too rare and precious way that's testament to the genius avant-garde vision of its mercurial creator. Èlg's first release for fellow Francophone freaks at Jean Carval and Low Jack's Editions Gravats. Art and design by Roope Eronen and David Coquelin. Mastered by Matt Colton at Alchemy.

DUBUFFET, JEAN Musical Experiences LP
"The legendary French painter and sculptor Jean Dubuffet exalted naivety and spontaneity in visual art, and his brazenly experimental recordings on Musical Experiences evince the same spirit through sound. He once reflected, 'Certain unexpected windfalls ... come of improvising on an instrument one doesn't really know how to use.' Dubuffet, who famously founded the art brut (or outsider art) movement, began making music in the early 1960s with avant-garde figure Asger Jorn. With no training, they played a range of instruments: saxophone, bassoon, detuned piano, hurdy-gurdy, cabrette, bombarde and so on. Soon, Dubuffet reserved a room in his home for making music and bought two tape-recorders in order to manually edit the results. He wrote fondly of the recordings' crudeness and the sense that they 'had no beginning and no end but were simply extracts taken haphazardly from a ceaseless and ever-flowing score.' Dubuffet's discography begins in 1961 with the release Expériences Musicales, a six 10-inch record set produced in an edition of fifty with original artwork and lithographed sleeves. Musical Experiences, compiled by composer Ilhan Mimaroglu and released in 1973 on his Finnadar imprint, collects eight of the twenty pieces on the much sought-after Expériences Musicales. JEPSON, WARNER Totentanz LP
"Considered as the first piece of electronic music to accompany a ballet, Totentanz is the arrestingly abstract and mightily expressive result of Warner Jepson's experiments with tape and Don Buchla's groundbreaking synthesizer, the Buchla 100. Totentanz, originally self-released in 1972, reveals a composer relieved of convention. In the 1950s and 1960s, Jepson was part of an informal circle of Bay Area artists that included Pauline Oliveros, Terry Riley, La Monte Young, Morton Subotnick and Steve Reich. A fixture of the legendary San Francisco Tape Music Center, Jepson was among the performers who realized the world-premiere of Riley's seminal minimalist composition In C and worked closely with postmodern dance figure Anna Halprin as well as the Welland Lathrop Dance Company. Jepson's affection for the performing arts meant that he was thrilled to be commissioned by the San Francisco Ballet Company to compose a piece to accompany Carlos Carvajal's beguiling, danse macabre-inspired Totentanz. Jepson, who passed away in 2011, incorporated concrete sounds from his collection as well as creations on the Buchla 100, which had recently migrated to Mills College. As the composer once wrote, ;Don Buchla's box ... offered numerous sound possibilities without a map.' First-time vinyl reissue. Limited edition of 500 numbered copies on clear vinyl."

SCHA, REMKO Machine Guitars LP
"Gnashing, thrashing and teeming with enchanting microtones -- Machine Guitars is the definitive recorded work of Remko Scha, although the late Dutch artist didn't play a single note himself. Rather, Scha arranged a motorized, rotating wire brush and saber saw in front of suspended electric guitars and let these metallic torrents flow. Scha was a linguist and generative artist, enamored of computers' capacity for algorithmic creativity. A leading researcher at the University of Amsterdam, he also cofounded the famed arts-space Het Apollohuis in a former cigar-factory in 1980. This haven for intellectuals and underground autodidacts served as the recording studio for most of Machine Guitars (as well as Ellen Fullman's brilliant The Long String Instrument), which originally appeared in 1982 on the small Dutch label Kremlin. Machine Guitars, as the critic Byron Coley has noted, ranks among the best of the era's minimalist-inspired, avant-garde guitar statements by Glenn Branca and Rhys Chatham. The semiautonomous sound-making sculptures also evoke contemporaneous work by Christian Marclay. Scha's work falls somewhere between conceptual art and avant-garde music -- a total revelation for minimalists and No Wave fans alike. First-time vinyl reissue. DUNCAN, JOHN Organic LP
"The inter-disciplinary maverick John Duncan emerged in 1970s Los Angeles as a confrontational performance artist and, as the decade progressed, aligned himself with the experimental-music collective Los Angeles Free Music Society. His sound art appeared on various self-released cassettes and alongside artists such as Jim Pomeroy and Yoshi Wada on the Los Angeles Institute of Contemporary Art's influential compilation Sound. Duncan's debut album, Organic, released in a tiny edition on the artist's own AQM imprint in 1979 and distributed through LAFMS, collects some of his earliest and most absorbing noise experiments. Recorded live, Organic is composed of two sidelong pieces: 'Broken Promise,' a patient, murky dirge featuring Duncan on tape and percussion, plus Michael Le Donne-Bhennet on bassoon; and 'Gala,' a kinetic, durational percussion piece featuring Duncan alone. The meditations on texture and unpredictability, realized with unconventional and found sounds, anticipate his later work with shortwave radio. First-time standalone reissue. Here he is working it from all angles: Straight up and searing stoic techno opener "Let My Mind Breath" is grinding away grittily, while things turn surprisingly bouncy, as "Genesis" dishes out electrifying boom-bap-breakbeats, transporting imagery of neo-futuristic Tokyo streets. MANCO, BARIS Yeni Bir Gun LP
2018 repress. LP version. The late '70s found Turkey in an economic slump, and there was a huge rise in political violence. Bari?, who so often put out collections of singles, rose to the occasion by spending six months holed up with his long-time backing band the Kurtalan Ekspres. The result was this studio album of Anatolian bummer psychedelia, often unfairly overlooked because it came out in the rather un-cosmic year of 1979, but also considered his best work by many. Yep, there are still electrified versions of Turkish folk songs, and the spaceshot ARPs and Korgs of 2023 (GUESS 038CD/106LP) are here too, but don't expect a happy swing around the ceiling of a planetarium. The real star of the album is the keyboard player, whose name translates to "Sword Agent." Yeni Bir Gun is viciously funky and brilliantly arranged, with tidbits stolen out of the latest disco hits, and lean, mean synthesizers that emerge from the beats like carbonated bubbles. First time ever reissue, this release comes in the same gorgeous gatefold cover as the original, has a repro of the original poster as well, and includes an extra insert with extensive liner notes.

A core figure on Prurient's label, affectionately described by Dominick Fernow as an "uninvited guest' sort of figure who travels around fucking shit up on the lonely", Folden has appeared on numerous and seminal Prurient recordings including the demo version of the groundbreaking Bermuda Drain album (2011), the final tape recordings made at the original hospital productions brick and mortar store as Prurient's Oxidation (2012), and the new released seven-LP of doom electronics Rainbow Mirror (HOS 597LP) which arrived to commemorate the 20 years of the project. Babe Beer Bar Car takes in signature sluggers that sound like The Haters gone house, through to rolling D&B and footwork rhythms fringing on the grey area, each half-lit by patented atmospheric pollutants. The set builds a murky picture of a character who spends long nights with his drum machine -- it's hard to shift the feeling that this is the kind of music -- numbly expressive, rudimentary and bluntly driven by urges that someone befitting of the great American lounge-lizard/drifter stereotype might make, or at least listen to, after dark. It's a quintessentially Hospital Productions sound -- deeply satisfying in its mix of black humor laced with flashes of demonic genius.

LOSOUL Island Time 2x12"
Losoul returns to action with his first long-player in almost ten years and delivers a stunning collection of compositions for Hypercolour titled Island Time. Otherwise known as Peter Kremeier, the German producer has mesmerized for many years with his organic and emotive house music, largely released on the influential Playhouse label, but of late has seen him release singles for Karat and Tardis Records, as well as his very own Another Picture label. Fans of Losoul won't be disappointed, as a diverse yet utterly familiar sound aesthetic pours out over the album's seven tracks in his own inimitable style. The jazzy broken beats of "Gold Tooth" shine with their micro-sample chops, whilst "Mean Time" is a dense and dubby slow stomp, teasing the drums with space echo and injecting sparse bass work where it matters. Inventive, spongy house grooves are delivered on "Boppin Lower" and "Square Down Smoother" whilst the album closer, "Lava In You" is a master class in ambient sonics and shimmering keys over a lo-fi swinging groove. It's been over 20 years since Losoul's signature single "Open Door" (1996), and the German producer continues to pour out honest and rewarding music.

IACOUCCI, GERARDO Industria N. 1 LP
Intervallo present a reissue of Gerardo Iacoucci's Industria N. 1, originally released in 1972. At the beginning of the '70s, in Italy, the revolutionary surge of 1968 was beginning to turn into something grimmer (and definitely not linked to left-wing ideology) but the concept of "factory" still had a key role in the economic and social life of the country. It was not just an alienating workplace, where you would often spent your whole life, but also -- and overall -- the place where demands were made and political struggles took place. Therefore, a feasible imaginary soundtrack for the factory was the daily noise of machines, tools, hammers: an idea that, years later, would be embraced by dozens of industrial bands all over the world. But, in 1972, that reality was documented by Gerardo Iacoucci: "We went into factories and workshops and recorded the noise of the machines, then we put on it special musical effects and did an accurate mix," he tells in the liner notes. Industria N. 1, divided in "Fabbrica" on the A side and "Impianti Meccanici" on the B side, is an amazing work mixing field recordings and experimental music, proving how you can combine political commitment, art, avant-garde, and pioneering noise music in a brave record. Edition of 300.

NARASSA Guerra E Angoscia LP
Intervallo present a reissue of Narassa's Guerra E Angoscia, originally released in 1973. Like Gerardo Iacoucci -- already celebrated twice by Intervallo with Simbolismo Psichedelico (2015) and Industria N. 1 (INTER 011LP, 2018) -- Narassa, real name Sandro Brugnolini, is back in Intervallo's catalog with another gem: his second release on the legendary Rome-based label Rotary, which came out after the amazing Tensione Dinamica (INTER 005LP, 2016). Guerra E Angoscia was born as the fifth installment of seven and, like the previous album (which was recorded with the collaboration of label boss Amedeo Tommasi, the mind behind every release on Rotary), moves away from the experimental and mechanical drift of the first chapter, to dive headfirst in a dark and heavy mood -- as the title suggests ("War And Distress"). Guerra E Angoscia is truly faithful to the topic of its title -- with tracks like "Rommel", "Minaccia Di Guerra", "Campo Di Sterminio", "Commandos", "Battaglia Tragica", "Beat Bellico", "Eruzione", and "Linea Calda" -- there's little room for misunderstanding. It does a brilliant job offering library music to evoke tragedies, dark times, and the madness of human kind. This is done with wonderful beats, sharp and powerful percussions, grievous rhythms, and dramatic string sections. No more dynamism, to quote Narassa's other release on Rotary: "here the tension is just the effect of explosions and wrecked nerves." Edition of 300.

FAHRLAND Mixtape Vol. 1 CD
To those familiar with the output of Cologne-based imprint Firm from back in the early '00s, the name of Geiger, alias Nass, shall undoubtedly ring a bell. Herald of a hedonistic mélange of funk-soaked electro pop and guitar-riddled synth music, sitting somewhere close to acts like Ween and Junior Boys, Alexander Geiger is about to break an eight-year hiatus with the drop of his debut album under the newly-founded moniker of Fahrland. A release that both encompasses a healthy dose of the discoid tropes from the Firm era but also aspires to split with a segment of it, geared towards exploring further undisclosed fringes of his shape-shifting sound universe, Mixtape Vol.1 is the fruit of a decisive move from the sleepless Berlin to the peaceful countryside landscapes of Fahrland -- a lushly forested area near Potsdam which you'll have understood played an essential role in Geiger's longed-for return. Versatile and inclusive, the album sweeps a polyamorous gamut of styles and tempos like an answer to the virtual prisons that inhibit us on a daily basis, straying away from normative standards and classic full-length calibration as a result. Instead weaving a singular narrative course, clear from all type of shackles and chains, Geiger navigates on sight, reflecting on notions as wide and universal as freedom, friendship and love across a multiversal patchwork of sounds and feels. From the languid sexy vibe of "Beggin", "Plastic People" and "Yesterday" -- all three featuring the sensual whispers of multi-talented vocalist and artist MZ Sunday Luv, through the heavily vocodered, chip-implemented groove of "I AM ROBOT" -- reminiscent of Telex and Space Art, Balearic jazz and rap shine of "Sky So High", smoky lounge ambience of "L AND H" onto broader ambient-friendly spans such as "Suspension", "Windshield Gently Wipers", and the smooth, sun-basking closer "Get Down", each track holds a fragile cocooned world at its heart.

YOUNGE PRESENTS VENICE DAWN, ADRIAN Something About April II LP
2018 repress. "In the years since the release of Adrian Younge's Something About April, he has been coined America's black genius: the evocation of analog vestige in a digital era. His majestic music has garnered him reverence, likened to Ennio Morricone's best work and the Beatles' tenacity to create new sounds. Fortuitously, Something About April has made an indelible impression on modern vinyl heads and producers alike, being sampled by DJ Premier, Jay-Z, Common, 50 Cent and more. The Something About April brand is an axiom to the modern 'Breakbeat' and Linear Labs is happy to announce its successor: Something About April II. Recorded with Younge's collection of rare instruments, Something About April II advances his musical paradigm with enterprising concepts and grander compositions -- it synthesizes the boundaries between dark American soul and classic European cinema. With effervescent conviction, Younge executes with an array of entrancing vocalists: Laetitia Sadier (Stereolab) and Bilal perform duets on 'Step Beyond' and 'La Ballade,' reminiscent of Serge Gainsborg and Jane Birkin; Raphael Saadiq blends 'Black Jazz' vocals with psychedelic soul on 'Magic Music;' Israeli star, Karolina, delivers haunting chants over concertos like 'Hear my love' and 'Winter is Here;' Loren Oden croons as if the apparent ghost of Donnie Hathaway created one last love song, 'Sandrine.' Younge is the experimental spirit of the modernist vanguard, looking at the past to create the future. What this album extrapolates, from vinyl culture, will become further magnified by its sampling down the line. Something About April II will replace the former as a holy grail for producers and collectors alike."

DAPAYK SOLO The Calling 2x12"
Dapayk Solo, Berlin based producer and veteran of the minimal techno scene, announces the release of his tenth studio album, The Calling. This latest project will be the producer's first solo album since 2015. The first track on this eight-track 2x12" is "The Calling" and it starts off with a pang of energetic, chopped beats before exploding into a brassy melody, continuously gaining momentum. "Blackout" immediately announces itself as a next generation Detroit house anthem. The rolling synths, hi hats, and vocals make this one of the most outstanding tracks on the album. "Aurora" stays true to its name with a buildup composed of throbbing ethereal synths that give the track an otherworldly vibe. "Flood" transports listeners to the dancefloor with its pulsating bassline combined with Komplement's quaint vocals. The second part of the album begins with "After All", one of the most enticing tracks on the album. It combines the groovy rhythm of four-to-the-floor percussion with tantalizing vocals by VARS before "Low Tinnitus" reverts to Dapayk's signature minimalist sound. The transition into "Wanderer" continues the momentum built up by the previous tracks. The closing "Walk With Me" is a deep-house jam that features a rhythmic shaker layered under Mental Bend's powerful vocals. Dapayk Solo, alias Niklas Worgt, isn't afraid to try new things. With five aliases under his belt, he continuously strives to experiment with different styles and production techniques to create innovative sounds. Throughout the span of two decades he went from producing drum'n'bass to house to ultimately crafting the groovy, edgy techno sound that he's now known for. In 2017, he released an LP titled Harbour (FENOU 007CD/026LP) with his wife Eva Padberg under one of his many projects, Dapayk & Padberg. While that album aimed to steer away from traditional club beats, The Calling sees Dapayk reassume his deep, dark, and infectious sound. While Dapayk is often categorized as a minimal producer, the LP proves that he is capable of extending beyond the scope of a single genre. The Calling is just another example of why Dapayk has managed to stay in the scene for so long: he loves electronic music and he's great at making it, too. RAILTON, LUCY Paradise 94 LP
Lucy Railton is a prolific performer who has appeared on countless recordings and collaborations with many important figures in contemporary music over the last few years. Paradise 94 is, remarkably, her solo debut -- featuring archival, location, and studio recordings which serve as a time capsule of all the myriad disciplines and influences that have brought her to this point in time. It both plays up to and shatters expectations of her music, which harnesses a duality of energies -- acoustic/electronic, real/imagined, iconic/iconoclastic, pissed-off/romantic; out of place and androgynous -- resulting in a visceral emotional insight and rare narrative grasp. Variegated, asymmetric, and located somewhere between her usual fields of exploration, Paradise 94 gives free reign to aspects of her creativity that have previously been subsumed into collaborative processes and interpretations of other composers' work. Here, she's free to probe, sculpt, and layer her sounds through a much broader range of techniques and strategies, placing particular focus on non-linear structural arrangements and exploring the way her cello becomes perceptibly synthetic through collaging, rather than FX. At every turn Paradise 94 is bewilderingly unique. The A-side unfolds an oneiric, inception-like sequence traversing temporalities, timbres, and tones from what sounds like a spectral ensemble playing on a traffic island in "Pinnevik", to bursts of rabbit-in-headlights trance arps emerging from meticulously dissected musique concrète in "The Critical Rush", and a collision of masked vocals, string eruptions, and a deeply moving, light-headed Bach rendition in "For J.R." On the other hand, "Fortified Up" on side B tests out a far rawer approach, sampling herself playing the same glissandi over and again, which she layers into a sort of perpetual, sickly motion, the Shepard tone riffing on the listener's psychoacoustic perceptions before calving off into a cathartic dissonant folk coda in its final throes. In the most classic sense, you can only properly begin to fuck with something from the inside once you truly know it. Railton's dedicated years of service have more than equipped her with the nous and skill to do just that, gifting us with what will no doubt be looked back on as a raw, exposed and important solo debut in years to come. Dyno, from Pesaro, Italy, discovered the passion for electronic music and analog synthesizers at the early age of 15. His first single was released in 1995. For over two decades Dyno has established himself as one of the most eclectic and respected Italian producers of techno music, releasing on many important labels (Global Underground, Yoshitoshi, ZYX Music, DJ Mag, Traum) and supported by artists like Joris Voorn, James Zabiela, Sasha, Sharam (Deep Dish), and Umek, to name a few. His passion for analog synthesizers led him to realize this ambitious ambient work that floats just above everything, in a perfect geosynchronous orbit, casting enough shade to dampen the extraneous while causing a shift in perception, enough to take his listeners out of time and place, to wherever they need to be.

SELMAN, WILLIAM Musica Enterrada LP
What if music had no beginning, no end? Can music exist "for itself" or "of itself", without structure constraining it, defining it? Can music be non-linear, non-narrative, simply experiential, existential? The second full-length album on Mysteries Of The Deep, Musica Enterrada from Portland's William Selman, neither answers these questions nor supposes them. But in listening, one can't help but wonder: What if I disappeared into this record forever? In another time and place, William Selman was known as Warmdesk, an alias through which he issued a series of sharply precise minimal techno records. In recent past, Selman shifted gears, shedding the dynamics of tension and release that characterized his previous alias's output. Under his own name, Selman began releasing process-oriented, freeform experimental music on cassette-focused outlets like Digitalis and Hausu Mountain. Now comes Musica Enterrada, a diaphanous, weightless musical vision not unlike the theoretical square root of GRM and Popol Vuh's early electronic forays. Split into six tracks across two sides of vinyl, Musica Enterrada bubbles, churns, drifts, and dozes. Dulcet tones pile up gently like waves on shore. Patterns repeat and reconfigure, as if heard from different angles. Rhythms appear, shift the frame, then disappear, into the ether whence they came. Play Musica Enterrada on repeat. And if you disappear into it, fret not -- you have drifted into solace. Full color jacket -- deluxe printed sleeve; 140 gram vinyl; Includes download code.

YATES, JACOB The Hare. The Moon. The Drone. LP
Optimo Music release the new album from Jacob Yates, The Hare. The Moon. The Drone. Not only is Yates one of the label's all-time favorite artists from Glasgow, but he is one their favorite artists from anywhere. Criminally unknown except to a few who have been long transfixed by his recordings and performances, we hope this release will open a few more ears to his wondrous musical world. The Hare. The Moon. The Drone. is the third album from Jacob Yates. This recording finds the band exploring dark hawthorn hedged lanes, moors, and suburban, new build estates. There's something more earthy about the songs but the menace and darkness remains. Musically there is a big shift on this album, a field recording of a folk band from a dark, pine-filled glen. The opener, "The Car" sets the scene for the rural side of the album, dank and stone cold. The tracks then shift through the woods, people turn into animals, passing a sunlit glade, you will hear a love song. Cassie Ezeji closes the side sweetly lamenting in Gaelic as the snow falls. The second side is a more urban affair opening with despair in a bedroom in Belgium, you'll visit a faith healer and drop in on your lonely mother. Lovatt recounts the story of a karaoke-addicted murderer before you finally go home to the new build just outside of town where the pylons tower over Michael and his sister Rachel. It's a journey you can go on, looking out of the window of the bus, glimpses of lives glide by, cards on seats promise to help you. Ding! It's time to get off.

CARTER, CHRIS The Spaces Between LP
2018 repress; Grey vinyl. Originally recorded between 1974 and 1978 at Industrial Records studio in London, The Space Between was first released as a 90-minute cassette in 1980 on Throbbing Gristle's Industrial Records label. It wasn't until 1991 that it was again released by Mute Records on CD. For those who may not know, Chris Carter is one of the founding members of Throbbing Gristle, partners with Cosey Fanni Tutti (knows as Carter-Tutti and formerly recording as Chris & Cosey) who has been working with sound for over 40 years. Although tracks from The Space Between have appeared on numerous compilations since its release, the album has never been available on vinyl -- until now. This new vinyl edition on Optimo Music, now retitled The Spaces Between, doesn't include all the tracks on the original album but has been enhanced and remastered from the original two-track master tapes and has new cover artwork especially for this release. JD Twitch has this to say about the release: "The original release featured fifteen tracks. As I wanted to have a reasonably loud vinyl pressing, I have picked my favorites to appear here (not an easy task to narrow it down). In addition, there is a bonus track 'Climbing' which was recorded around the same time that was released by Coil's Geoff Ruston on his Men With Deadly Dreams cassette in 1981. One of the first-ever recordings to use an 808 drum machine, it still sounds as if it is from tomorrow. In my opinion, these are some of the key recordings in the history of electronic music. They were made using very basic equipment at a time when there was no blueprint for what electronic music could and should be. There is a beauty, an emotion and an imagination present here that is lacking in a lot of modern machine music. This music is as vital and wondrous today as it was four decades ago." All tracks have been remastered by Chris Carter in 2009 for this release. Musically, it's an electronic soundtrack for a sleazy sci-fi movie, with moments of uplifting beauty combined with bits of claustrophobic mania. Amazing stuff.

DI DOMENICO, GIOVANNI Insalata Statica LP
The new solo LP by Giovanni Di Domenico, Insalata Statica comprises a single album-length composition, initially a suite of six distinct parts that have been weaved together to form a kaleidoscopic whole. Composed and performed almost in its entirety by Di Domenico himself, the music takes listeners from passages of melancholic introspection through to fuzz-laden melodic exuberance. The subtle, shifting harmonies, rhythms and textures are deftly arranged -- often blurring lines between a wide variety of acoustic and electronic instrumentation -- to form a coherent arc from beginning to end. Moving through delicate motifs for horns, woodwinds, percussions, harp, guitar, and electronics into more stately piano-led choruses and even hectic, Hammond-led jazz sections, Insalata Statica will appeal to fans of Jim O'Rourke's The Visitor (2009). The material for the album originated in studio recordings composed for a separate band project five years previously. Through techniques of overdubbing and editing, Di Domenico searched to find a common musical frame in which the different "songs" he had quickly laid down could exist -- and by the same means, to find a way in which to fuse diverse influences. Although the result of meticulous editing, Insalata Statica nevertheless retains a sense of spontaneity and lightness that gives the music an organic quality. Insalata Statica, which translates in English as "static salad" derives from a joke -- a friend's playful description of Di Domenico's music. As the pianist says: "I prepared the salad fairly quickly, then took five years to 'dress' it. I thought it was perfect to have this more static beginning that slowly unfolds into different twists and tricks, to reach a much less static end." While largely recorded in the studio in his current city of residence, Brussels, it seems only fitting that for a peripatetic musician such as Di Domenico the album should suggest the experience of travel throughout its ever shifting movements. Listening to Insalata Statica, one can easily imagine the character of different landscapes -- and their effect on mood and energy. The album's changing moods, colors, and tempos recall the melancholy of Franco Battiato's '70s albums, Brazilian folk flourishes, the spacious, harmonically rich jazz of ECM recordings, and oddball pop. Ushering such influences into a vibrant whole, blending instrumental timbres and melodic lines in surprising ways, Insalata Statica has a compelling, melodic charm all its own.

GOING III LP
Going's third effort is a joint release by Silent Water and Meakusma. Recorded in the span of one year in monthly recording sessions, it sees them venture off into a melismatic and contrasting contemplation on forward musical propulsion, '70s crossover jazz, and minimalistic and, at times, downright futuristic electronic music. Over the course of two spun-out, yet concentrated pieces, light and dark are built into a mesmerizing musical reverie that is equally as contemplative as it is explicitly emotional and confrontational. Melodic as well as rhythmic accents diverge and coalesce with ease and poise, a subtle yet incessant throb defining everything throughout. Going is the quartet of Giovanni Di Domenico, João Lobo, Mathieu Calleja, and Pak Yan Lau. Includes bonus download track "Ramen". Gatefold cover.

ESSEX, EVE Here Appear LP
Here Appear is an invocation, a salutation, and a celebration -- of past and perfect lives, forgotten and remembered, exchanged and borrowed. Eve Essex's solo debut is a multi-instrumental fea(s)t combining synthesizer, drum machine, alto saxophone, piccolo, electric organ/harpsichord, harmonica, slide whistle, bells, guitar pedals, and voice -- composed, arranged, and performed by Essex herself. What began as an improv set at Berlin's Harlekin Bar developed over two years into a complete body of work evoking multiple time periods, genres, characters, and sonic landscapes. The seven tracks that make up Here Appear harness elements of classical, drone, avant-jazz, and distorted pop, coupled with an ambitious vocal delivery that draws on the phrasing and articulations of Essex's own woodwind playing, to create a quasi-narrative mélange retaining the vulnerability of live performance. On the opening track "Grind Away", otherworldly harmonica strains set the stage for lyrics citing Chinese sci-fi novel The Third Body Problem (2006) as source material. Saxophone and piccolo interludes "Immediate Communicator" and "Colorless Stone" move between medieval-tinged melodic inventions and textural noise, recalling a Pharoah Sanders-influenced fever dream, while the linguistic abstractions of Russian conceptual poet Lev Rubinstein guide the looped, layered, and textured vocals of title track "Here Appear". The album closes with a languid take on Jacqueline Humbert and David Rosenboom's 1978 composition "Clear Light" from My New Music, reissued by Unseen Worlds (2018). Here Appear owes its minimal production to the conditions of its genesis, evidencing the restrained process of the solo artist; instrumentation is confined to what can be played simultaneously. True to the album's avant-garde roots, each song involves an element of improvisation, often taking the form of prompts or variations on a melody rather than explicit compositions. Even its most structured pieces make use of live-sampled loops, which inject a spirited unpredictability into the songwriting process and subsequent performance. Recorded by Al Carlson at Gary's Electric, Brooklyn. Mastered by Helmut Erler at Dubplates & Mastering, Berlin.

FUNKEES, THE Dancing Time: The Best of Eastern Nigeria's Afro Rock Exponents 1973-77 2LP
Repressed, originally released in 2012. Gatefold double-LP version; 180 gram vinyl. Dancing Time: The Best Of Eastern Nigeria's Afro Rock Exponents 1973-77 by The Funkees is the latest title on Soundway to mine the rich musical output of '60s and '70s Nigeria. For the five-year period this compilation spans, The Funkees' output crackled with dancefloor fire. Having featured on three of Soundway's most popular titles, across the definitive Nigeria Special compilation series, Soundway felt The Funkees' output deserved closer inspection. Presented here are 18 slices of funky Afro-rock grooves, hand-picked by Soundway's Miles Cleret from a selection of the band's 45s and two full-lengths. In the early 1970s, The Funkees were the #1 east Nigerian band and the only outfit to seriously challenge the popular Lagos-based rock combos MonoMono and BLO. It wasn't long before promoters in the UK came calling and The Funkees packed up their instruments and moved to London, where they quickly established a fierce reputation on the live circuit. Here, they recorded two seminal albums before finally breaking up in 1977 amidst some controversy. This collection features for the first time all of their Nigerian 45s alongside the best of their UK album material and is accompanied by a full interview with original member Sonny Akpan, who still lives in the capital.

BELONG October Language LP
October Language is the debut album by New Orleans based duo Belong, comprised of Turk Dietrich and Mike Jones. Since its release in early 2006, Belongs debut masterpiece has accumulated a dedicated cult following, with comparisons to the work of Christian Fennesz and Gas, with some claims that it plays like My Bloody Valentine's Loveless (1991) sans the songs. While these comparisons are useful for filing this album into a particular bin in the record shop, time has proven that October Language is a unique album which remains unmatched by its contemporaries. Despite the warm and welcome accolades of the albums arrival, there was no vinyl pressing until 2009, of which a limited one-time pressing vanished immediately. Spectrum Spools present a pristine vinyl cut to go with reimagined album art for the definitive edition of this legendary classic. VA The Weekend Starts Here! 10"
On this limited edition 10" you'll hear tunes the Modernist cherished in the early '60s. An ultracool mix of danceable rhythm & blues, Hammond Jazz, raw electric blues from labels like Chess and Excello, and something that mutated into soul in the years to come. As there was no proper distribution at the time and one could not fly to the United States to buy records like today (prices for flights were enormous) these tunes could only be heard in clubs like The Scene or Flamingo spun by forward thinking DJs like Guy Stevens. Wikipedia explains Mod: "Mod is a subculture that began in London in 1958 and spread throughout Great Britain and elsewhere, eventually influencing fashions and trends in other countries, and continues today on a smaller scale. Focused on music and fashion, the subculture has its roots in a small group of stylish London-based young men in the late 1950s who were termed modernists because they listened to modern jazz. Significant elements of the mod subculture include fashion (often tailor-made suits); music (including soul, ska, and R&B); and motor scooters (usually Lambretta or Vespa.) The original mod scene was associated with amphetamine-fueled all-night dancing at clubs." Features Sonny Boy Williamson, Bobby Freeman, Booker T. & The MG's, Oscar Brown Jr., Marty Lewis, Bobby Blue Bland, Otis Rush & His Band, Mose Allison, The Dave Brubeck Quartet, Nat Kendrick & The Swans, The Triumphs, and Louisiana Red. M.A.L. My Eight Little Planets LP
LP version. 40 years later the mythic album is available!Lies of omission and appropriations. The story of a magnetic tape that contained a trade secret. Four decades after My Sixteen Little Planets's release (on OHR, 1975), Inventions For Electric Guitar, the solo debut by Ash Ra Temple guitarist Manuel Göttsching, is now a classic, an undisputed worldwide reference. Inventions was made using only an electric guitar and a simple four-track tape recorder. Inventions was the challenge, and so was its impact. Göttsching recorded it in July-August 1974 in Berlin, after a sudden technical revelation. The original LP sleeve had the following printed on its back: Manuel Göttsching (guitars only). Manuel played his guitar and used a 4 track TEAC A3340, Revox A77 for echoes, wah-wah pedal, volume pedal, Sola Sound Fuzz, Schaller Rotosound, and Hawaiian steel bar. The reaction was unanimous: this was a significant innovation, in terms of both technique and creativity. However, there are little-known facts to this case. In early 1974, Göttsching's label received a tape sent by M.A.L. -- same design, same configuration, almost the same tracks. This is known by only a handful of experimental musicians from the Charleroi area. M.A.L., aka Daniel Malempré, is the actual inventor of this technique which Göttsching reproduced a few months later. Given the above, it's suggested that you listen to both albums. As doubts are removed, the truth sets in, forty years later. Here's hoping that this will ease the deep disgust that made M.A.L. leave his guitar untouched for so long. All music by M.A.L. on Fender Stratocaster 1964 with a wah-wah Cry Baby. Recorded and mixed at home between 1972-1976 on a reel-to-reel recorder, Sony TC-630.

WEERASETHAKUL, APICHATPONG Metaphors: Selected Soundworks from the Cinema of Apichatpong Weerasethakul 2LP
2018 repress. Double LP version. Includes color insert. Apichatpong Weerasethakul is recognized as one of the most original voices in contemporary cinema today. His seven feature films, short films, and installations have won him widespread international recognition and numerous awards, including the Cannes Palme d'Or in 2010 with Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives. The compilation album Metaphors contains 14 sound works carefully selected from his past cinema and other visual works since 2003, which includes Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives, Syndromes and a Century (2006), Fever Room (2016), and more. Weerasethakul has regularly worked with the same sound designers since 2003 and has always given importance to the personality of on-location sounds that give his films a sense of continuity. In post-production, he's fascinated by the manipulation of these "live" sounds in order to express "reality". This reality doesn't necessary represent the actual sound of the places, it's more of a representation of the world in layered memories. Similar to the way he treats images, Apichatpong sometimes calls attention to the physicality and the fragility of the audio (and its apparatus) and to the process of audio manipulation itself. In his cinema, Apichatpong prefers natural sound sources over music. Nevertheless, he often boldly incorporates popular songs that were persistent during the shooting. He doesn't shy away from using tunes that relate to his own personal memories. In this sense, Apichatpong values the spirit of authenticity much more than rigid manipulation of audio and weaves a complex and dreamlike soundscape in his cinematic repertoire. Born in Bangkok, Apichatpong grew up in Khon Kaen in north-eastern Thailand. He began making films and video shorts in 1994 and completed his first feature in 2000. He has also mounted exhibitions and installations in many countries since 1998 and is now recognized as a major international visual artist. His art prizes include the Sharjah Biennial Prize (2013) and the prestigious Prince Claus Award (2016). Lyrical and often fascinatingly mysterious, his film works are non-linear, dealing with memory and in subtle ways invoking personal politics and social issues. Metaphors is compiled by sound designers Akritchalerm Kalayanamitr and Koichi Shimizu.

HASTINGS OF MALAWI Visceral Underskinnings LP
35 years after the release of their critically acclaimed 1981 album, Vibrant Stapler Obscures Characteristic Growth (SR 428LP), the British dadaist group Hastings Of Malawi release their second album, an epic sound poem entitled Visceral Underskinnings. It is a 40-minute film without light that reflects on the human condition, on modern society, on the nature of telephony and electricity and an attempt to make sense of the world in which we live that provides no answers. It is a sound collage of diverse elements including the voices of George Washington Johnson ("the whistling coon", 1846-1914) and Dr Hastings Banda, the first president of Malawi. It includes randomly generated computer music, voice synthesis, recordings of cold war number stations, American military sound weaponry, and recordings of the some of the many sound sculptures produced by Hastings Of Malawi over the last 30 years. Hastings of Malawi produce sounds that sit in that grey area where sound art and music meet but they reject both labels and cannot be comfortably placed in either camp. This is not an easy album to listen to, but persevere and you may or may not be able to decipher its meaning. "Rarely has an album so consistently made me question what the actual fuck is going on," is how the Wire magazine described Hastings Of Malawi's first album Vibrant Stapler Obscures Characteristic Growth and the second album makes things no clearer. If you are a fan of the tedious, puerile, repetitive beats that populate the insipid sonic environment that is popular music today, you probably won't like this album. Assembled with no regard for musical convention, Hastings Of Malawi follow their own rules and have created another fascinating journey into their world which makes it no easier to understand our world. Apparently, the Chinese voice that starts the second side of the album translates as "the deaf mutes have so many intimate words they want to share with you" and this perhaps sums up what Hastings Of Malawi are trying to do with Visceral Underskinnings. Another musique concrète jewel created with the same peculiar, disjointed, uncommercial, and totally original Hastings Of Malawi aesthetic. Limited edition yellow vinyl.

BILLONE, PIERLUIGI Mani 2CD
Mani is the very first recordings of the new collection Contra Naturam, a collaboration between Ictus Ensemble and Sub Rosa. Mani is released as a double-CD; Includes 24-page booklet. The concept of Contra Naturam: The "magic of the record" befits contemporary music, which starts by adhering to an open, flexible sonic space where magnetic bolts of lightning shoot through. In that respect, at least, it has always been pop. The record lifts the curtain on a virtual stage; it creates its own space time; it reports on a listening project. And home computing has changed the game: the digital kitchen doesn't intimidate anyone anymore: editing and mixing are now part of the performer's daily routine. The composer: Italian composer Pierluigi Billone (1960) is known for works which often "reinvent" the performance techniques of the instruments involved. He studied under Salvatore Sciarrino and Helmut Lachenmann. He focuses on the nature of sound. He also draws on free jazz and non-European music for his research on sound matter. After a brief return to Italy in 2000, he decided to move to Vienna. His music has privileged performers such as the Klangforum Wien. It is broadcast by German and Austrian radio, is regularly scheduled in international festivals such as Donaueschingen. The performer: Tom De Cock (1982) received his Master's degree in percussion at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels, as well as a Master's degree in contemporary music at the HFMDK Frankfurt am Main, Germany. Next to his position as percussion soloist at the Brussels Philharmonic orchestra, Tom has been working as a freelance musician in Europe: he played with Ensemble Modern, MusikFabrik, Radio Kamer Philharmonie, among others, and is a fixed member of the Ictus Ensemble, Tom has collaborated with Pierre Boulez, Peter Eötvös, Philippe Hurel, Bruno Mantovani, Philippe Manoury, Georges Aperghis, and many other prominent figures of international contemporary music.

SEVEN THAT SPELLS The Death And Resurrection Of Krautrock: Omega LP
"Beyond. Not of this planet. Asymmetrical, atonal, cold, and yet in perfect harmony with itself. Created over a span of three years in collaboration with Mr. Blake Fleming, the drummer extraordinaire behind bands like Laddio Bolocko, The Mars Volta, and many more, Omega is brutal and driving, mystical and out of this world. A suitable end to the The Death and Resurrection of Krautrock trilogy. It's time to abandon this planet and let music speak for itself. The Last Lord Of Atlantis Seven That Spells was formed by Niko Potocnjak in 2003. The band was initially formed as a power trio, and over the years more than 60 musicians contributed to live performances and recordings. In 2009 bassist Jeremy White joined the band and has since become its second core member. The band has gained an underground following and enjoyed some great events in recent years a tour of Japan in 2008, a gig at the Roadburn Festival in 2009, and at the Duna Jam festival 2010 & 2012. PALM UNIT Hommage A Jef Gilson CD
Back in the day, French pianist, composer and all-round jazz superstar Jean-François Quiévreux, aka Jef Gilson, was up there alongside the likes of peers John Coltrane, Oscar Peterson, and Sun Ra. In a fitting homage to the decades-worth of sublime music, and his sad passing away in 2012, French quarter Palm Unit present a lively, honest tribute, upbeat, and contemporary re-interpretative vision of his legacy. Gilson has been noted for changing the face of bebop with free-jazz and Afro. Along the way, his big band featured the likes of Lloyd Miler, Bill Coleman, Michel Portal, and others. With his own recording studio and label Palm Records, Gilson released music from greats including Byard Lancaster, David S. Ware, François Jeanneau, and more. He also helped embed a more ethno style to the world of jazz, inspired by his visits to Madagascar, which resulted in the famous Malagasy jazz albums. Palm Unit, a wildly eclectic super-group of jazz greats, includes uKanDanZ's saxophonist Lionel Martin, keyboardist Fred Escoffier from Le Sacre du Tympan, drummer Philippe 'Pipon' Garcia whose mostly known from his worth with the Erik Truffaz Quartet, and special guest Del Rabenja -- who played alongside Gilson in Malagasy -- on the Madagascar valiha harp. Palm Unit plays Gilson's repertoire without any a priori, in a totally complex-free manner, reinventing it whilst preserving its original essence. The keyboards sound almost psychedelic (and often not that far from the style of Eddy Louiss on Jef Gilson's '60s albums), the sax scratches, mews, and wails, whilst the drums make the whole thing swing. Even Del Rabenja was surprised to rediscover the songs still sounding so modern, decades after they were created.

SPACE GHOST Endless Light LP
Tartelet Records is ten. To celebrate a decade in the cut, they're out a home run of new material from label mainstays and fresh signings in 2018. To kick things off, the label sets free Endless Light, a new record from Oakland newcomer Space Ghost. Coming on like a brainchild to Dam Funk and Mutant Beat Dance, Ghost's sound falls off the shelf between a number of distinct reference points: Lone's early tropical synaesthetics; the modern funk of "Funkosphere"; the intimate tapes out of PPU. In a sea of SoundCloud copycats, he's a revelation. Endless Light is a record with an open hand: an instantly appealing sound from a new producer with a highly-tuned ear. Born of his collection of antique synths and drum machines, the Space Ghost experience channels a deep heritage of 1980s funk minimalism and analog boogie. Velvet pads, hood-rat sleaze, and heaped spoonfuls of soul. Never overly reverential or nostalgic, the record looks forward to a strange, bright future. Its sweeping sci-fi synths and twinkling sound design recall Lone or Dorian Concept's first outings into cosmic psychedelia. "Cosmic Cave" packs enormous ambient vistas into a bejeweled miniature. Frosty interlude "After Hours While It Rains Outside" touches the same cold nerve as Vangelis on Blade Runner (1982). The gently vocoded love jam "Strong Heart" could've even fallen out of the Stranger Things playbook. And there's heat for the club too. Nearly all the low-swung beater-ludes pick up into skippy house sketches and loping dancefloor cuts. Rather than squeeze into club music's often taut wireframes, tracks like "Colour Waves" and "Following A Vision" dance effortlessly between time signatures. Cruising gems "Endless Light" and "Aquatic Speedway" even go full hilt into the lush domain of vintage Burrell Brothers productions. Throughout, Space Ghost stands out from the mounds of music today defined by lo-fi aesthetics. These are twelve enchanting cuts from a producer who has barely pulled back the curtain on his prowess.

COME HOLY SPIRIT Asters And Disasters LP
"Formed in 2012 in Pittsburgh PA, Come Holy Spirit wields the age-old trifecta of guitar, bass, and drums in unexpected configurations. The songs embody a complex aggregate of musical influences, ranging from the angular deconstructivism of early experimental anarcho-punk (think Dog Faced Hermans and Poison Girls) to the tender repetition of far-flung folk music. Gina Favano's (John Denver's Airplane, Beware The Blunted Needle) bass playing lies somewhere between a thunder storm and a runaway train. And her striking vocal range alternately spits and croons a shrewd critique through a caul of poetry, while Sam Pace (Centipede Eest, Rickety Records) incorporates unconventional percussion with elaborate poly-rhythms to add another layer of tonal melody to the mix. The trio is completed and complimented with Aaron Lindberg's (Hex, Garmonbozia) sometimes percussive scratchy guitar work, sometimes melodic and patient with bouts of blistering heaviness. After two self-released efforts, Asters And Disasters marks their third album and their first on Water Wing. The album's six songs (seven including the digital download bonus track!) run the gamut of anthemic joy and punishingly noisy mayhem, all the while never losing the groove. Two songs 'Elephantine' and 'Essayons' feature the iconic voice of GW Sok (The Ex, King Champion Sounds) who was given the song titles and a peek into the imagery that was swirling around Favano's head when the songs were named. Sok took the germs of ideas, wrote the lyrics and performed them on the album. Cover photo by underground filmmaker Bill Daniel. Limited to 300 copies."
