VA Belgian New Beat 4CD
For years, new beat has been labeled as "wrong music". Today, it's hip again. 30 years after the facts, the book Belgian New Beat takes you to the very beginning. The history of this music and its associated dance and fashion are revealed for the first time. It also brings the whole story of discotheques, deejays, record stores, and their records. At the same time, it is an all-encompassing reference work on AB sound, acid house, and new beat. But there is also the compilation: a four-CD set with a nice selection of slow and dark dance records full of rhythm. A balanced mix of timeless classics and lesser-known diamonds from the genre. Features Beat-A-Max, In-D, Inouï, Boytronic, White House White, Body Count, Shriekback, The Rude Boy Farley Keith, Major Problem, Spiritual Sky, Dr Phibes, Corruption House, Acid Aliens, L&O, BPM AM, A Split Second, Acts Of Madmen, House Boys, Amnesia, Erotic Dissidents, Ugly Mood, Philadelphia Five, Belgavox, T-R-P, Nasty Thoughts, Ghostdance, Fatal Error, Zerocks, Logic System, Twice Of Love, Nitzer Ebb, La Rolls, Space Opera, Hypnosys, No Excuse, Reese & Santonio, Eleanor Academia, Actual Guy, Channel 5, Neon, PN'P, Janet Weis, Jarvic 7, He Said, Shock Taktix, Snowy Red, 16 BIT, Chayell, Iconoclass, Marcus 7, Shakti, Chico Crew, Acid Commando, Spectrum, Casa Nostra, D.I.Y., and Edwards & Armani.

GEMINI The Beginning 4x12"
Following the reissues of 1997's Imagine-a-Nation (AD 004LP) and 1995's Le Fusion, Anotherday present a special release from the vault of the enigma that is Spencer Kincy, AKA Gemini: Gemini's first four releases, lovingly re-mastered and packaged together in a very limited box set titled The Beginning. Originally released on Relief Records, the Chicago techno label headed up by Cajmere, these releases were Gemini's introduction into the worlds of house and techno, and contain some of his most vital works. As one of Chicago's most mysterious and revered characters, the story of Gemini has become something of a myth in recent years -- blazing a trail throughout the '90s, prolifically releasing over 200 tracks from 1994 to 1999, Spencer's music had shades innovation and soul few of his peers could match. Then, suddenly, at the peak of his career, he disappeared. As before, this album has been licensed directly from the man himself, and the money made from its exploitation will go directly to him. The Beginning compiles The Beginning (1994), U Know How I Feel (1994), Imagine A Nation (1994), and Welcome To The Future (1995). Edition of 500.

Relentless Apparel Wax never misses a beat and is back at it with 003, the third chapter of the saga. The release is made up of three tracks, three distinct parts of the same engine, three proper dancefloor bangers. The EP kicks off with a compelling broken-jazzy beat, with its groovy breakdown and reprises and its funky vocals it's that one track you'll need to shazam on the spot. The second tune will have you right away when you'll hear those tribal rhythms and hypnotic vocals while the third is the typical one you'd call a "peak time track".

M.B. & BARNACLES Sidereal Decomposition Activity CD
"After first meeting in 2007, legendary Italian composer Maurizio Bianchi (M.B.) and Matteo Uggeri (Barnacles) return on a new collaboration, an uncompromising trip through space dubbed Sidereal Decomposition Activity. The album features four long tracks described as 'cosmic music,' a neurotic trip between analogue noises and pulsing beats, that ends in an armageddon of obsessive sounds."

DISCRETE CIRCUIT Control Zero EP 12"
Discrete Circuit's Control Zero EP marks his most straightforward installment yet. The title track gets down to business without detours by growing into a powerful drum avalanche that combines bone-dry kicks with a frenetic atmosphere. Ed Davenport completes the A-side with a remix from his DJ and production alter ego Inland. Although both tracks on the flip pick up the pace and intensity, they venture out into less dense, more emotional directions. "Dimensional Equivalent" embodies a no-nonsense rollout while "Conjugate" works with similar vocabulary while shifting the focus towards both the varied percussion and the narrative progression.

EP#2 carries forth much of the same classiness Tee Mango's well known for. "Come A Little Closer" samples "Make It Last Forever" by Inner Life which is paired with playful drum rhythms and smooth Rhodes chords. Prototypical opts for punchy drums and a swinging bass, a track that would work as well peak-time as it would warming up. "Wazoo" is a deep cruiser with a pinch of acid.

COOPER, MAX Balance 030 2CD
Max Cooper's blend of the artistic and scientific schools of thought have steadily built him up to become one of the standout electronic musicians of his generation. His left-of-center approach makes for a truly timeless mix for the 30th edition of the Balance series. Cooper emerged from Nottingham's club scene in the 2000s, holding down a residency at the city's influential Firefly nights where he played turntablist sets across six decks with his fellow resident. From there he became an eminent producer of brooding, densely melodic techno. He has since turned into a more multifarious artist who borders experimental electronica, ambient, and IDM within and alongside his dancefloor-driven output. Wearing several hats these days -- DJ, producer, label owner with his burgeoning Mesh imprint, creator of art installations, consultant for new technologies -- he is a veritable polymath. On a technical level, the mix is drenched with subtle detailing, editing, rearranging -- even binaural processing only audible on headphones that appears to make sounds move around the listener's head in all directions. Exclusives come in the form of Coopers's own "Balance (Perc Tool)" -- self-explanatory -- and the blissful depths of "Music Of The Tides", constructed using an intricate binaural particle cloud simulator plugin created by Rob Clouth. Clouth also provides three other tracks on the mix. More unreleased material comes via Deapmash's "Blocks" -- a fixture in Cooper's sets of late -- and fellow Balance compiler Patrice Baumel's remix of Cooper's "Organa", which Baumel wanted to scrap until he witnessed the amazing reactions when Cooper played it at a festival they both featured at last year. New English act Brecon provide sumptuous broken beat electronica on another exclusive, "Half Light", and Cooper's remix of Nils Frahm's Juno-60 based live jam, "For", which finally gets an official release. During this incredible 118-minute odyssey you'll hear field recordings, brooding soundscapes, hypnotic piano modulations, deep atmospheric techno, heavenly melodies, glitchy electro-pop, hazy ambient passages, ravey breakbeats, glitchy drum & bass, and even some Thom Yorke (Atoms For Peace). Also features Ben Lukas Boysen, Sebastian Plano, Bing And Ruth, Bxentric, Geotic, Agrippa, Portable Sunsets, Dave DK, Olafur Arnalds, Burnski, Tenebre, Lusine, Sarah McIlwain, Donato Dozzy, Batu, Loscil, Tim Hecker, Tessela, Hidden Orchestra, Ben Lukas Boysen, Kimyan Law, Com Truise, HLZ, LSB, Lee Chapman, Belief Defect, Alix Perez, Vaetxh, and Rival Consoles. Double LP version includes MP3 download of the mix; Double LP mix features Bing And Ruth, Nils Frahm, Rob Clouth, Max Cooper, Com Truise, Kimyan Law, Ben Lukas Boysen, Alix Perez, Atoms For Peace, and Vaetxh.

HEMKA 707 Collision 12"
The first installment of 2018 for Balans is from the talented Parisian DJ and producer, Hemka. "707 Collision" rushes in with subtly shifting groove repetition, suspenseful melodies, and echoes of Detroit. The atmospheric "Nocturnal Rounds" keeps the fast-paced rhythm with added sci-fi flavor -- peak-time techno at its best. Balans boss, Tripeo, offers his own interpretation to the title track and following in that groove he works his magic to ecstatic, infectious effect in a playful, funky mood. "707 Collision (Tripeo Beatless Tool)", on the other hand, swaps the pressure for something much lighter -- a sublime journey to the deepside.

RAIN TEXT 2 12"
"United under the guise of Rain Text are well-known Italian producers Giuseppe Ielasi and Giovanni Marco Civitenga, who you may better know for his output as My Dry Wet Mess. The project first came to life in 2016 with a debut instalment on Civitenga's own imprint Skyapnea, soberly-titled '1', now followed by its longed-for second outing '2', coming out mid-April on Bedouin Records' polyamorous sister label Bastakiya Tapes. From pensive ambient opener '2.1' to the carefully crafted dub techno of '2.3' this collaboration shines as much through its silences as it excels in the creation of a genuinely captivating atmosphere out of a very limited battery of elements. Deep, acute and penetrating, a masterly EP."

Files were swapped, sounds, and lyrics re-wired, and Ideal Home is the gloriously minimal result. LA FEMME Psycho Tropical Berlin 2LP
2018 repress. French indie-rock band La Femme is a conundrum -- an episodic band with various faces. La Femme was born during the X years in Biarritz, France, when Sasha and Marlon started composing music on their guitars and recording it onto Garage Band. Together they ride surfboards, pianos and synthesizers as they explore various styles from '60s yé-yé French pop to California surf music. Marlon moved to Paris, and there he met Sam, who played bass. Together, they formed SOS Mademoiselle along with Olivier Peynot, and played vintage French rock, as Sasha was practicing his scales in reverb surf band Les Redoutables. Sasha then joined his friends in Paris, where they discovered French cold wave and synth pop, Marie et les Garçons being one of their favorites. They polished a style that could be described as one of the following: surf-wave, bizarre-wave, strange-wave, weird-witch-wave, silly mental-wave or psycho-tropical Berlin. Joined in 2010 by drummer Noé and female singer Clémence. La Femme formed its first live roster in a few days and took shape that same year with its first anthem, "Sur la planche," a song that was made to be hummed and whistled while riding a surfboard. Later on, La Femme released their second EP, Paris 2012. Soon joined by fancy rhythm drummer Nunez Ritter von Merguez aka La Sauterelle and singer Clara Luciani, as well as a whole roster of female singers, they now present their debut album Psycho Tropical Berlin where rock, pop, rococo Bauhaus, as well as influences from Kraftwerk and Elli & Jacno conjoin just to please you. BEBEY, FRANCIS Psychedelic Sanza 1982-1984 2LP
2018 repress. Double LP version with printed inner sleeve. Born Bad Records presents the music of Cameroonian musician Francis Bebey, circa 1982-1984. "The first time I saw a sanza (a type of African 'thumb piano'), it was just sitting there on a piece of furniture in my family's living room/dining room -- a space that our father also transformed into a recording studio every day. It seemed more like a box than a musical instrument: a mysterious instrument, which arrived at our house, like many things, in a somewhat miraculous way. The sounds it produced seemed particularly bizarre; to my young musician's ears, trained in Western classical music, it sounded out of tune. That's because, like my brothers and sisters, I had been trained on the piano. I had trouble understanding how anyone could endure these tones and, honestly, our father's passion for 'unusual sounds' did not interest me. I was in secondary school at the time (the very late 1970s) and was not at all oriented toward musical projects. I planned to graduate, and then become a chef. In the early 1980s, my interest in music picked up. I was still undecided about my career. I was content to pursue my 'serious' English studies while hanging out at jazz clubs at les Halles in Paris, where I sometimes joined jam sessions. Next, I put together my first band with professional musicians; I had hidden my age and lack of experience from them. France was just beginning to accept 'world music.' Musicians of every nationality were performing in Paris. It was a wonderful period. My father asked my brother Toups and me to accompany him for a few concerts. In particular, we toured Tunisia together at the time of the 1983 Carthage International Festival. Back then, my father was renowned across the French-speaking world. Everyone looked forward to hearing his humorous songs, like 'Agatha' and 'La condition masculine.' But, behind the scenes, he continued his research concerning electronic music, the sansa, pygmy polyphony, etc. One day he put a sansa in my hands, without saying a word. He was sending me a message: 'Let's see what you can do with it!' That's when I really discovered something. Exploring the instrument and playing, I transcended the 'imperfect' aspect of its sound and began to discover its fascinating potential. Playing the sansa, you enter a world that enraptures you in a very serene and mesmerizing way. I think its sounds evoke a rainbow, with rain falling while the sun shines. A very peaceful feeling. It allows you to make music that truly sounds like life. The sansa is also the instrument that my father and I shared the most because I am a pianist and he was a guitarist. I also share this eminently African instrument with my musician brother, Toups. Our father loved to tell us one of the legends of the sansa: how it even managed to dispel the boredom felt by... the Creator himself! This instrument gives life to the world, to beings and things. I did not participate in the production of the various records that my father devoted to the sansa. He did it himself, you might say, in his 'laboratory.' Yet today, I cannot imagine playing a concert without using a sansa. The piano remains present so that listeners don't become disoriented and wonder about the weird sounds invading their ears! However, I find the eccentric and disturbing side of sansa interesting. And the sansa always affects the audience: in reality, it excites them. The secrets of this instrument are surely its beneficial powers and... its magic!" --Patrick Bebey

SANDWIDI, PIERRE Le Troubadour De La Savane - 1978/1982 LP
LP version. Printed undersleeve. A few years before Upper Volta changed its name to Burkina Faso, thanks to Thomas Sankara's dream of a new society, Voltaic music emerged as some kind of true cultural revolution in the wake of the country's independence in 1960. Popular music that sprung up from Burkina Faso owed much to the music from neighboring countries and to the longing for "cultural authenticity" conveyed through Guinean music. The first two decades of independence saw the upcoming of such orchestras and artists, such as Pierre Sandwidi. Nicknamed "the troubadour from the bush", Pierre Sandwidi stands as one of the finest Voltaic artists from the 1970s. He belonged to an unsung elite of Francophone artists such as Francis Bebey, G.G. Vickey, André-Marie Tala, or Mamo Lagbema. His entire released output consists of less than ten 7"s, two LPs, and a bunch of cassettes. Along with his friends Jean-Bernard Samboué, Abdoulaye Cissé, Oger Kaboré, Joseph Salambéré, or Richard Seydou Traoré, he was part of the "vedettes en herbe" movement. Their songs were played on the national radio before being released as a single, recorded live in the studio. In 1970, Pierre Sandwidi traveled across the country, working for the state. He met Bobo-Dioulasso cultural entrepreneur and Volta Jazz boss Idrissa Koné, who offered him to record a few songs for his own imprint, Disques Paysans Noirs. Sandwidi delivered "Lucie", a romantic song in the classic mandingo vein. In 1975, Pierre Sandwidi recorded two more singles at the Maison du Peuple. Using an Akai recorder as a soundboard, he was backed by Super Volta's mighty guitar player Désiré Traoré. In 1976, he recorded three more 45s with L'Harmonie Voltaïque as a backing band. In 1979, while in Abidjan, Pierre Sandwidi recorded his first full length LP with the help of Voltaic Prince Edouard Ouedraogo. He launched his own "callao" dance, as a homage to this Sahelian bird that bounces instead of walking. Confronted with many temptations, Sandwidi sang about his will to stay true to his values, being first and foremost an African. A true callao song, "Mariétou" sounds like genuine French Sahelian pop. After Sankara's fall in 1987, Sandwidi distanced himself from politics, focusing on writing new songs and plays. Twenty years after he died, this compilation stands as a vibrant tribute to one of West Africa's most outstanding and adamant artists.

DUBUFFET, JEAN Experiences Musicales De Jean Dubuffet LP
Cacophonic present an abridged reissue of Experiences Musicales De Jean Dubuffet, originally released by Jean Dubuffet in 1961. If ever a phonographic accomplishment could encapsulate the precise modus operandi of the Cacophonic label, then the Expériences Musicales sessions made by French born painter, sculptor, music maker, wine merchant, and founder of the Art Brut movement, Jean Dubuffet would be a prime candidate. Originally released as an impossibly rare six record box set containing Dubuffet's first long anticipated forays into sound sculpture and spontaneous artistic noise, these intimate early 1960s recordings show a lesser-known side of this important artist's personality and stand up as a vital document in both fields of contemporary art and experimental music. Finally released to a wider audience and presented complete with Dubuffet's signature style artwork, this abridged vinyl edition includes specific selections curated by the artist himself, in conjunction with experimental music pioneer Ilhan Mimaroglu, and showcase what the two leading lights of modern art consider to be the best moments of this historic session. On this limited vinyl pressing Dubuffet succeeds in translating his unique spontaneous creativity and active support of Low Art into musical forms, a process with which he would also collaborate in his dual compositions with Danish avant-gardener Asger Jorn (for a separate series called Musique Phénoménale). Utilizing a wide range of orthodox acoustic instruments ranging from violin and open piano to duck whistles and not musical apparatus this set of eight pieces (culled from a potential twenty tracks made under the Expériences Musicales banner) sees the work of the artist approaching music from the perspective of "a man of 50000 years ago". Recorded at Galleria del Cavallino in Venice Italy during the first months of 1961, these primary experiments with music followed over twenty years of Dubuffet developing his own unconventional artistic persona as an instantly recognizable pioneer of post-war artistic abstraction. The recordings you will find within the grooves of this LP were created without any reference and in the artist own words "without any discipline, without anything that would present the artist from expressing himself freely and for his own good pleasure". Almost sixty years have passed since this sonic objet d'art was first realized, and with all the technology and the advanced science-of-sound, decades of so-called experimental musicians are still struggling to find that Brut energy within their creative endevors making this early example one of vital existence.

ARP FRIQUE Welcome To The Colorful World Of Arp Frique CD
The Colorful World Of Arp Frique is the exotic and super funky debut album of Niels Nieuborg, aka Arp Frique. The debut follows his very well-received debut release on Rush Hour (RHSTORE JAMS11, 2018). Pulsating New York City style live disco vibes, interwoven with both Caribbean and Cape Verdean sounds, are themes throughout the record with danceability always guaranteed and a healthy finishing touch of weirdness present across most tracks. First single "Nos Magia" was shortlisted for Track of the Year 2017 at Gilles Peterson's Worldwide Awards and has been given airplay by BBC Radio 6 Music, BBC Radio 1, and NTS whilst club DJs Antal and Hunee have all supported the track in their sets. The Arp Frique alter ego is a reference of course to two things Nieuborg clearly appreciates in music: firstly, the sound of the Arp synths and secondly, by referring to Chic's "Le Freak" -- he is also showing love to the genre of disco. Be sure to know however, that you are not listening to edits of seventies jams. Arp Frique's music may sound vintage and authentic at times but all tunes are original and made with live instruments. Mind you though, that all compositions are the product of the "insatiable creative urge" of just one man. As part of a wholly different career, Nieuborg once owned a venue and programmed various venues and festivals, like his latest success, Festival Magia. With that knowledge in the back of your mind, the impressive cast on the album -- which follows on 2017's Nos Magia EP -- seems logical. Nevertheless, the status level of the contributors is astonishing. There's a Cape Verdean funana song featuring legend Americo Brito on vocals, an infectious Brazilian disco funk hit-to-be with Ed Motta, two tracks with Surinam's famous Ronald Snijders on flute, three collaborations with Afro-beat don Orlando Julius and so much more. Also features Humphrey Campbell.

Presenting vinyl versions of the bonus reworks to his 43-minute Deproduction album track "Admit It's Killing You (And Leave)", the A-side includes Terre's haunting 14-minute "Piano Solo", where he drops the unsettling backdrop of samples of domestic violence to leave the keys suspended in reflective space, reverberating in plangent overtones which take on a starker effect if you care to play it at 33rpm. The B-side is Sprinkles' uncannily brilliant "Dead End" house mix, a more percussive adjunct to the "House Arrest" mix off EP1 (C 027-1EP), framing traces of the original vocal and keys in a sumptuous, rolling and swinging deep house workout full of rustling congas and lustrous low-end that marks up among her most affective, especially in its closing minutes. RAISON D'ETRE Alchymeia CD
"It's with great honour that we present the latest album by Swedish dark ambient stalwart Raison D'être. This time Peter Andersson scrutinizes the paths of Carl Gustav Jung's notions of archetypes and the individuation process. Just like Mise en Abyme, the previous Raison D'être album from 2014, Alchymeia is diving deep down to the shadows of the unconsciousness, and back to a dawn of the true Self. Confronting the shadow within is the darkest time of despair. There seems no way forward, only down. All is blackening and decomposed. Suddenly, through an enantiodromia, the ever-deepening descent into the unconscious transmogrifies and becomes gradually illuminated. The melancholia is being purified. Alchymeia is in a sense the 'raison d'être' of Raison D'être, a shadowy journey through our unconscious the individuation process and archetypes. This release also marks the first time a raison d'être album will be available on vinyl. Artwork by Nihil."

"First solo work by Italian musician Martina Betti. Falling Time is an aural ticket to a non-place. Swirling ambient sounds made of processed field recordings converge into a richly textured and harmonically layered narrative. The tracks scan the phases of ascension to a suspended and formless destination, free from the bounds of time and space: a rite of passage. We are nowhere, a journey with no boundaries or restrictions transforming the smallness of ordinary life into transcendent magnitudes. Building on constant cinematic tension, frictions and collisions of sounds, through which the mind is transformed, freed from daily dualities, at one with its psychic abilities. However, not in the classic reincarnative sense, but as a study of how souls rather than being judged by a higher power, themselves chooses what flesh to inhabit. To freely roam between the dimensions and to cling on to any form of life at will. These cycles of life and death, bound in part by flesh, inspired to create these tense and organic atmospheres -- all synonymous with the journey of the soul. The result is a natural evolution of Nordvargr's trademark darkness into more rhythmic and vocal compositions where the confrontational stance of Henrik´s other projects shines through; from the harsh bombast of MZ. 412 to the vocals of Anima Nostra, all surrounded by the darkest Scandinavian aura of horror. Featuring guest vocals by Trepaneringsritualen and stunning artwork by Dehn Sora."

HESYCHIA Metanoia CD
"New project by Austrian Arthur Rosar (former member of Abigor, Walser...). The album is a meditation on freedom from all passions (apatheia) and repentance (metanoia) through fundamental concepts established by early christian mysticism (the desert fathers) with respect to zen buddhism and pre-christian European traditions. An aural guide to force the removal of all illusions and be in total awareness of the eternal now, forging a stillness of the soul, going beyond the mundane. The music is a savvy achievement of total surrender through improvised analog atmospherics and field recordings. Recorded during lent 2016 A.D. by Arthur Rosar with Erik Mayer at Bethlehem, Vienna. SCHMEICHEL Alteration EP 12"
Leipzig producer Schmeichel presents Alteration EP. "Evidence" is the suave overture of the 80/160 beats per minute EP. It evolves around a deep and grounded kick, filtered and vibrating pads. "IKillWantU" is a seven-minute beast, with many hidden and interfering layers and elements like dissected vocals, a distorted distant bass line, and steady rimshot. With "Talkin" we reach the spiritual center of the EP, a wonky beat is place among a reminiscent and unshackling choir of male chants over a heavy sub bass. "Uhhhwheeee" is optimistic and melancholic at the same time, driven by Chicago bass kicks, hi-hats, and rims.

TRAGO, TOM Bergen 2LP
Bergen is the next, and natural step in the expanding career of Dutch producer Tom Trago. The acclaimed producer behind Voyage Direct (RH 025CD, 2010) will release his fourth LP, with the label and crew he's built a close relationship with over the past ten years, Dekmantel. Bergen is an LP that connects his legacy, family, and commitment to dance music in one resplendent package. Having relocated from Amsterdam, Tom Trago set up his new studio in the coastal town of Bergen, located in the northern Netherlands. Recorded in his family house, with the sea at one side, and the countryside to the other, the resultant record is a crafted piece of art, full of space, and the classic machine-driven, house music aesthetic that has come to represent Trago's sound. The spacey-passively-paced LP intro "Bergen" was the first to be picked up by Dekmantel's Casper Tielrooij. Yet it was the electro-orientated "Zeeweg" that became the template for the rest of the record. The b-boy electro vibe, with its melodramatic synth melody was influenced by the road that leads to his scenic retreat -- with slow, steady curves, and a gentle, upward trajectory, "Zeeweg" and its album namesake, twist and turn in fluid synchronicity. "The Creation Of Lalibela" plays on this world music vibe, with ethereal and fun key patterns, influenced by the work of Mulatu Astatke. "Always Be With You" is one of the LP's standout tracks, epitomizing the new album's country settings, and featuring his girlfriend on vocals; it swings at a steady, up-beat pace, rich with harmony, color, and melody. Elsewhere on the album, Trago sticks to his dancefloor roots, "Faith Belongs To Us' is molded in a Chicago-to- Amsterdam house style, while album closer "Working Machines" plays with resonance and atmospherics, creating a moody, pulsing yet stylish rhythm. Having been raised in a musically-driven, and open-spirited household in which the producer grew up learning the piano, it didn't take long for Tom Trago to be indoctrinated into the new school of Amsterdam producers. Bergen's analog tools lend to its organic sound, one honed and crafted by its natural surroundings, and matured approach by one of the Netherland's most accomplished producers.

MERSAULT, PALI Stridulations LP
Pali Meursault is a sound artist, composer, and sound designer. His electroacoustic and sound art research takes different shapes: compositions for records, radio works, installations, or performances. Environmental sound recording is central in his work, which takes from musique concre?te and the sonic exploration of soundscapes. For Stridulations, Mersault confronts recorded and performed sounds, composition and improvisation: field-recordings of animal communication (insects, birds, and bats recorded in France, Japan, and South America) mix and dialog with the "sonification" of fluorescent tubes. Both the environmental sound matter composition and the electromagnetic instrument have evolved with performances between 2014 and 2017. Little by little, new recordings were collected and new electrical and electronic supplies were added to the setup. The record is altogether the outcome of that process and a different take on the project, leaving the synesthetics of the flickering lights but embracing the deepness of "blind" listening. For Pali Mersault, the long research for Stridulations has been a practice for deconstructing binary oppositions between nature and machine, bio- and anthropo-phony, and to explore the strange sonic affinities that exist between some animal voices and technological phenomena.

HEAD TECHNICIAN Profane Architecture LP
Pye Corner Audio morphs into Head Technician mode for the project's brooding second sojourn with Ecstatic. Taking inspiration from his fascination with Brutalist construction, Martin Jenkins exclusively uses Roland TR-606, MC-202, and TB-303 boxes plus the Roland System 100 modular synth to sketch out a slow, murky sound in furtive pursuit of the vibes on Zones (2017), but this time the results are even darker and obscure. Echoes of early Detroit and UK bleep and bass infiltrate the stark corridors of Profane Architecture as much as the hauntological spirits of Boards of Canada, combining to make a sound that revels in nostalgia yet yearns for the future. It's not a new idea, but it is one that Jenkins executes with such classic style and unique character that can only lead to comparisons with acid maestros such as early Plastikman or the Analord, Richard J. James. For moody dancers, Profane Architecture is perfect; from the oozing elan of opener "First Pour" through the spheric momentum of "Béton Brut" and the mind-weaving acid of "Formwork" he establishes a slickly hypnotic sound that works its magick with more funk on the flipped, generating the tactile form of "Second Pour" and the ruggedly hewn groove of "The New Brutalism", then closing out with the exquisite darkness of "Demolition" -- a real highlight in his extensive and highly collectible catalog. Cut by CGB at Dubplates & Mastering.

METRO AREA Metro Area 3LP
2018 repress. In the late nineties, the budding producers Morgan Geist and Darshan Jesrani bonded over their shared love of slower tempos and '70s and '80s New York City club culture. Obsessed with record digging and the sounds they heard on late-night "club classics" radio shows -- and turned off by current releases they saw as artlessly "updating" sublime disco by sampling, filtering, and subjugating them with huge kick drums -- the duo set out to discover how their favorite old 12" records were made. They naturally gravitated towards extended dubs of songs -- full of strange mistakes and echoing backing tracks -- instead of the better-known vocal versions. Lacking the big budgets and gear that made so many of their favorite classic records come together, they were forced to take a guerrilla approach. They reprogrammed their techno-oriented arsenal of secondhand synths and samplers, using novel digital recording technology to capture live instrumentation and prioritized mood over hooks, and the resulting music was just wrong enough to sound unlike anything else being released at the time. After just four underground 12" releases, the duo -- now well-known as Metro Area -- released their first and only album, Metro Area, in the fall of 2002. Fifteen years later, it's time to celebrate the culmination of their shared history and inspiration once again. Environ is proud to present the 15th Anniversary Edition of Metro Area, Metro Area's eponymous debut album, meticulously remastered using the original source tapes and generously spread across three slabs of vinyl. The 12-track triple LP and included download card combines all the songs from both the original US and licensed European releases, and features new commemorative artwork unique to this edition.

WET TUNA Livin' The Die LP
Restocked. "Utterly boo-licious debut slab by this new duo, made up of Matt 'MV' Valentine and Pat 'P.G. Six' Gubler, who have been in cahoots since the near-forgotten days of Memphis Luxure. The pair (mostly known for guitar-aktion) create a full band's worth of jams using percussion and keys and all-else. The results make for one of the more mind-melting platters to've hit the Valley in a good while. Like many of the best sides this pair has been associated with, the music on Livin' The Die is an elegant balance of ramble and spear. The songs' formats are as loose as Earl Butz's shoes but each of them is lanced with guitar sounds as tight as his legendary fist. Around these spumes of electric menace you'll find rings of crazy space burble, vocals so deeply layered they sound like something happening in the back of Daevid Allen's brain. But large swathes of the album are rurally expansive, as befits the mountainside on which it was recorded. Pods of guitar-pedal-whomp slowly surface in the middle of whirling sea of harmonica slurps, juice harp bwongs and vocals as dreamy as they are lost. Roll a bone or be one. The choice, as always, is yours." --Byron Coley, 2018 Edition of 500.

CECILIA Adoration LP
Adoration is the restrained yet ravishing début album by Mélissa Gagné, aka CECILIA, a Rome-based Montreal artist who previously lit up two songs on Rabit's Les Fleurs Du Mal album (HALC 016LP, 2017), released an EP for Yves Tumor's label (2017), and now makes a commanding and significant impression with one of 2018's most haunting LPs, a filigree dramaturgy of trip hop, ersatz film score music, and ambient collage. CECILIA wrote and produced Adoration, singing in English, French, and Italian with accompaniment by mutual spirits such as her friend Jasmine Pisapia and the poet activist Griséldis Réal, who help to render a stark yet subtly gilded cross-section of her psyche, which places the listener as dark interpreter to a series of tumultuous inner dialogues. "One is summoned to whisper truth, beauty, tragedy to demon ears." Incubated for 18 months between Montreal, Toronto, and New York, Adoration reads like intimately diaristic pages recalling an amorphous lucid dream. In that phantasmagoric headspace she meditates on loss and romanticism, using a shifting backdrop of highly visual stimuli to frame her thoughts and bring them to life with an uncannily immersive effect perhaps not felt so strongly since Félicia Atkinson's Hand In Hand in 2017 (SHELTER 081CD/LP). Electronic bass and percussion are shadowed with traces of synth and guitar improvisations, but the one consistent element is the female voice. Sometime detached, glossolalic, and at others uncannily familiar, plaintive, that vocal presence is integral to the LP's quietly absorbing atmosphere, and even if the listener can't understand their direct meaning, they connote so much more through abstracted inference and ambiguity. Following her early forays made with the Charity Whore EP for Yves Tumor's Grooming label, and previous work as DJ/producer Babi Audi, along with her hybrid stage works, CECILIA ties all those strands into an illusory yet highly distinguished work set to resonate with listeners from myriad backgrounds and disciplines.

WIPERS Over The Edge LP
2018 repress. "The bleak, hard-driven third LP by the Wipers (originally released in 1983) offers Greg Sage at his most chased and breathless, lashing out with sharp staccato notes as if melody were his only defense. While their debut LP provided the blueprint for grunge, and their second album recast the band as one of America's premier postpunk bands, it's Over The Edge that best exemplifies the Wipers' sound. The jagged, effortless guitar lines, the paranoid lyrics and raw-throated vocals and the taut, unified rhythms that define their sound bleed together most clearly on this LP, and it stands as both the best entry point for new fans and the most prevalent favorite of diehards. Since Jackpot Records began our Wipers vinyl reissues in 2006, we've been inundated with requests for a reissue of Over The Edge. VA Skinhead Hits The Town 1968-1969 LP
LP version. The skinhead sound grew from the music that was coming out of Jamaica around 1968 to 1971 and was adopted by the British youth. The music seemed tailor made for their sharp look and natty dress style, a style that was heavily influenced by the Jamaican rude boy look. The skinhead movement started around 1968 and by the following year it became the style fashion of English teenagers. The uniform consisted of boots, braces, and jeans and the upbeat sound of reggae seemed to match the style perfectly. The tempo of the music seemed to be picking up around 1966 to 1968 the rocksteady period, which was when the earlier ska sound slowed down. The sound system dances needed a slower bear to swing the night away to, some say to cater for the extreme heatwave that hit Jamaica around that time. Kingston Sounds have selected a bunch of tunes that would have provided a sound to those heady times, so sit back and enjoy some of the tunes the youths were listening to when the skinheads hit town. Features Derrick Morgan & Owen Grey, The Versatiles, Derrick & Patsy, Bunny Lee Allstars, Stranger Cole & Lester Sterling, Ronald Russell, Derrick Morgan, Lloyd Robinson, Young Freddie, The Termites, Eric Barnett, Dervon & The Tartans, and Max Romeo.

GAUSSIAN CURVE Clouds LP
2018 repress. Music from Memory's fourth release sees the Amsterdam-based label taking an exciting sidestep with the release of Clouds. It's the debut album from Gaussian Curve, a collaboration between Italian ambient pioneer Gigi Masin, Land of Light's Jonny Nash, and Marco Sterk (also known as Young Marco). The trio came together during a weekend-long recording session in April, 2014, with no preconceived ideas. Developed around improvised jams, the eight tracks on the album are all single-take live recordings. The three musicians succeed in developing a musical language all of their own, with Gigi Masin on Rhodes and piano; Jonny Nash on guitar, melodica, synths, and trumpet; and Marco Sterk on synths, rhythmic structures, and production duties. Recorded in the heart of Amsterdam's red-light district, the album reflects the unusually warm spring and the buzz from the open windows that filled the derelict downtown studio space during that particular weekend. And on the more introverted late-night compositions, the music quietly soars, reflecting the brooding melancholy of an evening in that particular part of the city. Clouds is a simple, heartfelt record of an inspired meeting of unique souls in unique surroundings.

RICCI, VITO I Was Crossing a Bridge 2LP

On the leading edge of NYC's underground music scene, Vito Ricci produced only a handful of self-released cassettes and one LP between 1983 and 1985, with most of his work recorded for experimental theater and performance art pieces. Taking their label name from Ricci's only LP, Music From Memory brings together a compilation of works by one of the unsung heroes of New York's downtown music scene. Starting out as a percussionist, Ricci's early musical journey led him to improvised and experimental jazz; working alongside such luminary musicians as Rashied Ali, Byard Lancaster, Peter Zummo, and Yousef Yancey. He quickly became involved in the avant-garde scene with spoken word performances, film scores for independent movies, and even performances with punk bands at venues such as CBGB's and the Mudd Club, and his compositions drew on all of these influences while channeling them through his experiments with synthesizers and drum computers. Drawing comparisons with New York's downtown no-wave scene, Vito's compositions blend his unique use of intricate percussion with a wide sphere of musical influences to create a world of hypnotizing ambient, meditative minimal-synth, dubbed-out electronic funk, and even left-field boogie. With most of Vito Ricci's music remaining previously unreleased, the compilation I Was Crossing A Bridge unveils Ricci's unique and visionary take on electronic music.

KUBIK, LADISLAV Vocal Music CD
This CD, titled Vocal Music, presents a selection of the vocal works for mezzo-soprano and various instrumental settings, composed by the recently deceased Czech composer Ladislav Kubík during the period 2012-2016, complemented with one of his earlier compositions, "River in Spring on a text by Franz Kafka (1996). Kubík's lifelong interest in poetry and prose, demonstrated over the years by his numerous vocal works, ranged from the ancient Latin texts and traditional Japanese poems through Rilke, Pasternak, and Kafka to the 20th century Czech, Slovak, American, and Polish poetry. Equally wide is the range of musical forms and genres that bear the poetic message; they include large choral works as well as miniature songs, various chamber music combinations, and non-traditional vocal applications, sometimes in symbiosis with an electronic component. Amongst these works, a special place in Kubík's compositional output belongs to the works for mezzo-soprano, partially generated and inspired by the composer's collaboration with the notable mezzo-soprano Phyllis Pancella. Three of the included works, "24 Haiku", "To Be a Poet", and "Magdalene", are dedicated to her. Yet, her performance is effectively supported by Taiwanese-American pianist Hui-Ting Yang and the Czech musicians Jitka Hosprová (viola) and Hana Brozová (flute), as well as the excellent and, for new music, always enthusiastic Florida State University Percussion Ensemble with Alexander Jiménez (conductor).

BRASS, NIKOLAUS Works for Clarinets and Strings CD
From a conversation between Nikolaus Brass and Das Klarinettenduo, Beate Zelinsky and David Smeyers, in Donaueschingen in 2006, there arouse the double concerto Zeit im Grund, released on two different Neos CDs: Zeit im Grund/Von Wachsender Gegenwart (NEOS 11112CD, 2013) and Double Concertos by Atli Ingolfsson, Adriana Holszky and Nikolaus Brass (NEOS 11708CD, 2017). This has been the beginning of more future collaborations. In 2009 Brass composed his work "Dialoghi d'amore VI" for the duo, which he expanded into a three-movement work in 2011. Later the quintet "SPUR" for string trio and two clarinets was realized through a collaboration between the Munich based TrioCoriolis and Das Klarinettenduo. For the "5. Streichquartett", Beate Zelinsky and David Smeyers started working together with the Minguet Quartett. This inspired Brass for his trio "Strophen", written especially for Beate Zelinsky, David Smeyers and the violist of the quartet, Aroa Sorin. This CD is completed by "Salut" and "Adieu", both works for clarinet solo.

WESSELMANN, MARCUS ANTONIUS Solo Works I CD
Unaccompanied solo pieces, like those brought together on the present CD, are in a category by themselves -- for instrumentalists and composers alike. Nowhere else is the musician left on his own to such an extent, left to his own devices. Moreover, there are often special technical difficulties; since the advent of virtuoso performance, the solo piece has always been a preferred venue for stupendous, exposed virtuosity. Such works for a single interpreter play a major role in the oeuvre of Marcus Antonius Wesselmann, already in a quantitative sense with 19 compositions so far. The composer, who lives in Cologne, has consistently explored the possibilities of various ensemble types and sizes in a body of work that has grown steadily over the past thirty years. Alongside a series of ensemble works, he has repeatedly written solo pieces for various instruments, so that today there is a nearly equal balance in his works catalog between ensemble and solo compositions. With the exception of the piano works ("SOLOS 5", "6", "7", "9", "14", and "16"), Wesselmann has so far chosen a different instrumentation for each work -- here flute, percussion, electric guitar, viola, baritone saxophone, or bassoon in the mix, composed in 1991, stands somewhat apart from the series of works introduced on this CD, for this composition for two-channel tape requires no performing soloist. Wesselmann is essentially concerned here -- according to his own formulation of the basic idea of the piece -- with the "connection and/or mediation of musical and scenic sequences." "SOLO 1" features Helen Bledsoe on flute; "SOLO 2" features Dirk Rothbrust on percussion; "SOLO 3" features Mats Bergström on electric guitar; "SOLO 4" features Garth Knox on viola; "SOLO 9" features Simone Otto on baritone saxophone; and "SOLO 10" features Johannes Schwarz on bassoon.

oOoOO & ISLAMIQ GRRRLS Faminine Mystique LP
LP version. The album is a collaboration between oOoOO and Islamiq Grrrls. The album's title -- Faminine Mystique -- is an allusion to the Betty Friedan book Feminine Mystique (1963) that inspired the second wave feminist movement in the US. Freidan said that while society was providing (middle class) women with historically unparalleled material abundance, it failed to allow space for personal growth. A rigid apparatus was keeping women in a narrowly defined social role that all but excluded self-exploration. Pronounced "Famine in Mystique", the album's name reflects both groups' feeling that, in a similar way, an increasingly powerful set of contemporary social forces are aligning to, on the one hand, provide people with more music and art than was made accessible before, yet rigidly limiting the types of music offered to people to sounds that favor a rigid economics first model of clicks and easy consumption over exploration and experimentation. Faminine Mystique's 13 songs are framed by fragments of lost, forgotten, or discredited 20th century artists and genres: the well-crafted guitar solos of '80s metal; jazz guitarist Barney Kessel; the "Ashley's Roachclip" drum break; Milli Vanilli; a Kool DJ Red Alert radio show barely audible on some bedside clock radio in some blue collar town on the outskirts of Manhattan; a freeform saxophone solo over a two minute, feminist juke-punk anthem; The elusively simple but dreamy vocals of a France Gall or Astrud Gilberto. All blended into the compressed sounds of modern pop and RnB.

DEATH AND THE MAIDEN Wisteria LP
LP version. Dunedin trio Death And The Maiden return with a second album of hypnotic post-punk dream-pop. Wisteria continues the exploration of the dark bounds between love and death, beauty and decay unveiled on the band's debut (2015). Although the BPM of their shadowy sound world may have increased, the new album seems even more somber than its predecessor, with a deeper undertow of anxiety beneath the slow-motion trance pop. The songs on Wisteria are still anchored by Lucinda King's hypnotic basslines, as her vocals deliver lyrics exploring human experience within natural and unnatural worlds, but this time Hope Robertson's delay and reverb-drenched guitars break free, soaring above the decelerated, minimalist techno sounds of Danny Brady's electronic instrumentation and programmed beats, at times hinting at psychedelic surf music exotica. This unusual combination of techno, post-punk, psychedelia and dream-pop makes the new album from Death And The Maiden another beguiling proposition to explore.

EKEMEZIE, LIVY Friday Night CD
2017 release. Odion Livingstone, based out of Lagos, Nigeria, present its debut release, a reissue of the sought-after Nigerian disco LP rarity Friday Night by Livy Ekemezie, originally released in 1983. "I was just out of senior secondary school and I wanted to make an album," recalls Ekemezie. "I was into disco and funk at the time and I was looking for a bass-driven funky sound. The entire idea was to make an album that sounded like something made in London or the U.S. I tried to sound 'American' but we ended up with something else: a mix of American and Nigerian." Friday Night was recorded at Goddy Oku's Godiac 24-track recording studio in Enugu, one of the best studios available in Nigeria at the time. "It took about nine months to a year to make the album," continues Ekemezie. "I financed it by myself so I had to resort to friends helping out with loans for session men and studio time. The original LP was released on blue vinyl and that idea came from William Onyeabor. We used his pressing plant and he sold the idea to me. It was different so I said 'why not?'" The LP has been picked up by many in recent months as the demand for Nigerian disco originals has grown with the track "Delectation" receiving an unofficial edit and DJs like Motor City Ensemble dropping the album into their sets. This first ever reissue features full original artwork along with new interviews with Livy Ekemezie and contributing musician Jules Elong by Odion Livingstone's Temi Kogbe.

GROTTO At Last... CD
2017 release. Odion Livingstone present another essential reissue of a rare gem from the Nigerian archives, Grotto's lost Afro-rock classic At Last..., originally released in 1977. Formed at "Greg's" (St Gregory's college in Ikoyi, Lagos), Grotto came up at the same time as several other influential student bands based there, including Ofege. "As Grotto, we played a rock/funk fusion. We were probably aged 15, 16 or thereabouts and we were heavily into music; we listened to Jimi Hendrix, Carlos Santana and lots of rock bands," explains lead guitarist Soga Benson. Their debut album is a heavyweight trip, drifting from psychedelic workouts to crunching breaks and funkier directions. "Odion Iruoje was the A&R manager at EMI at the time and he auditioned us, liked the material and signed us. He also produced our recordings," continues Benson. "Most of us were boarders and the school encouraged music and had instruments so we had time to jam and really gel together. The group still continued after we left Greg's. We had to juggle A-Levels with gigs and we used to skip school whenever we had a show, rehearsal or a recording date." While many Nigerian student bands were studio-based projects, Grotto was an active live unit during the '70s. "We played at The Shrine with Fela, with Tee Mac at Batakoto, with Sonny Okosun at Kakadu, Segun Bucknor at Granada Hotel." This first international reissue of Grotto's debut album comes with a full interview with Soga Benson and producer Odion Iruoje, along with a selection of rare and previously unseen photos of the band. APPLES, THE Mind Twister CD
2017 release. Odion Livingstone present another reissue from the Nigerian archives, the first ever international release of The Apples' essential Afro-funk rarity Mind Twister, originally released in 1978. As part of the St Gregory's student band scene in Lagos during the late '70s alongside Ofege, Grotto, and more, Apples were picked up and produced by legendary EMI Nigeria producer Odion Iruoje who added overdubs to the album at Abbey Road in London with Curved Air keyboardist Francis Monkman. The band met and formed in Lagos. Bandleader Frank Ikpefuran teamed up with Georges Vieira from the American School and brothers Clifford and Gerard Nagi who were studying at St Greg's in Lagos, and remembers, "I must have been 19 years old when I met Clifford. We used to hangout on Victoria Island, watching bands play and jamming with them. That's how we met Georges. We all listened to Jimi Hendrix, Santana, Idris Muhammad and the Beatles." "We started jamming with Clifford on the guitar, his brother Gerard on the bass and Georges on the guitar. We chipped in with song ideas, with the group contributing arrangements and refining things until we were satisfied. The band had a natural sound, which stemmed from the chemistry we had. It was a strange chemistry, we were an odd combination from different backgrounds but when we played, something happened..." After landing a residency at Tee Mac's club in Surulere, Apples auditioned for Odion Iruoje who arranged recording dates and cut the record. For a young band, Iruoje was surprised by the quality of the band, adding in extra keyboard parts from Lemmy Udofia and Francis Monkman, founder of Curved Air and session man for Kate Bush, Sky, and music libraries like BBC Music, Bruton, and KPM. Iruoje remembers, "their playing added a layer of sophistication and sheen without encumbering proceedings." This definitive edition of Apples' Mind Twister features new interviews with bandleader Frank Ikpefuran and producer Odion Iruoje. Fully remastered by The Carvery.

SEX JUDAS FEAT. RICKY Go Down Judas 2LP
It's the return of the sexual vigilante Sex Judas and his trusted sidekick Ricky. This time in full-album mode. Norwegian producer Tore Gjedrem of Ost & Kjex fame, channels his love of comix, bohemia, and fascination with human vice, the unspoken, the red light districts, the alleys of the mind into his alter ego. Sex Judas is no bad character but certainly says what it's author cannot. "I wanted to create a world where any musical idea is possible, wound together by the world and word of Judas, the ultimate sinner, reborn as a child of Venus." Inspiration ranges from Africa to '80s New York City, from Bohannon to Quasimoto, from Norwegian new wave to acid house. With contributions by friends in the Oslo scene as hometown legend DJ Pål Strangefruit Nyhus, composer Ole-Henrik Moe, jazz pianist Bugge Wesseltoft, Sidiki Camara from Mali playing that beautiful Ngoni, and multi-instrumentalist Ivar Snuten Winther, the album touches anything from blues, funk, disco, and post-punk to IDM, acid house, and electronic explorer music.

VA Brown Acid - The Fourth Trip CD
"If you thought we were getting close to the end of the Brown Acid series with our last Trip, you were dead wrong... we're only just getting rolling. The well of privately released hard rock, heavy psych, and proto-metal 45s is deep and we are nowhere near tapped out. Most of these records were barely released and never properly distributed so they ain't easy to find, but they're out there if you're willing to dig... and we aren't afraid to get our hands dirty. Hard calluses have formed from handling the shovel and we've sifted through a lot of dirt, but we've dug up another ten tremendous records to share with all the heavy heads out there. This volume brings together eight insanely rare and skull-crushingly heavy 45s as well as two previously unreleased bangers. You may remember the Zekes' jaw dropper 'Box' from the First Trip. If you don't, you better go back and refresh your memory, you stoner. That song rips! And so does this previously unheard recording we legally obtained from the Beverly Hills records vaults. 'Comin Back' is the longest tune we've yet to include on this series and it's a full-on rager! The only surviving copy of this recording came to us on the original 1/4" master tape from Hollywood's long-defunct Demars & Duffy Music. We did our best to preserve the recording and we think you'll appreciate the rawness. There have been numerous groups named Bad Axe over the years, but the one you hear here is the baddest. This five-piece fresh outta high school kicked out this jam (and a few others) in a Chicago studio in 1973 just for the hell of it. As a garage band, they were previously named The Burlington Express and they went on to be known as Bitch, but these dudes hit their stride as Bad Axe and 'Coachman' is their crowning achievement. It went completely unreleased until 2014 when Permanent Records issued it and 'Poor Man, Run' as a limited edition 45 with a killer picture sleeve. It's long out-of-print and only obtainable now on Brown Acid. The rest of the records included on this volume vary in rarity, but at least two of them were virtually unknown until we discovered them. You'll win the lottery before you find copies of all of the original 45s in even the best record stores. Many of the records included in this volume are owned only by the members of the bands and some of the band members don't even have personal copies. That's just how hard these guys hit it back in the day! We're lucky some of these guys are still alive and well enough to give us permission to use their masters. And for that, we thank them. And you, for all your support. Brown Acid is here to stay... as long as you'll have us. Plug in, turn up, and freak out... this is what Rock n' Roll is all about."

DEATH WHEELERS, THE I Tread On Your Grave CD
"Heavily inspired by the aesthetics and ethos of bikesploitation movies such as The Wild Angels, Werewolves On Wheels and Psychomania, The Death Wheelers seek to glorify this unsung era of movie-making through their sordid sounds. Taking musical cues from rock greats Davie Allan, The Cramps, Motörhead, The Stooges, and Grand Funk Railroad, they make zero compromises when it comes to laying down the groove. Through their bare-bones, stripped down, jammy approach of sleaze 'n' roll, this instrumental Canadian quartet pushes listeners to their deepest, filthiest carnal / sexual desires. I Tread On Your Grave is more than just an album -- it's a soundtrack to a wild B-movie in the mind, following this truly awesome plot synopsis: Decimated in 1972 by local authorities, all members of The Death Wheelers, a notorious motorcycle club, have been buried at the Surrey cemetery. But the time has come and they have risen for their last ride. They're back from the grave and they're hungry for blood! Nothing can stop this gang of living dead from recruiting new members as they travel coast to coast to find the filthiest, nastiest, trashiest individuals to join their ranks. Their goal, assemble a legion of thirteen 'discycles' (disciples + cycles) to seek revenge on the pigs that dismantled the club and send them to their graves. The cycle of violence continues..."

HOUSE, SON Live At Oberlin College, April 15, 1965 LP
"Son House is one of the truly legendary figures in blues and folk music He first came to prominence in 1930 when his first 78RPM recordings for the Paramount label were issued. Like many of the greatest blues singers of the 20th century, Son was born and raised in the Delta region is Mississippi and his masterful and innovative slide work was a major influence on many of the other great singers from that region including Robert Johnson and Muddy Waters. Son stopped performing in the late 1940's as he did not relate to the new powerful amplified blues band sound, and felt no one cared to hear the old style classic blues anymore. It wasn't until 1960 that Al Wilson, a devout blues aficionado most famous for leading the blues group, Canned Heat, tracked Son House down in Rochester, New York and encouraged him to perform once again. Until his death in the late 1960's, Son House performed with all the old power and brilliance that gave him the name 'Father of the Blues'. This fantastic recording was recorded 'live' at one of the many successful Son House appearances and the existence of these tapes was only recently discovered. For the first time, not only his brilliant singing and slide guitar can be heard, but a rare glimpse of the man himself, talking intimately to the audience of his lifetime of experience and what the blues mean to him. This is a rare and unusual performance that no blues lover will want to be without."

To whom it may concern: Following the release of the recently discovered musical recordings of the escaped extra-terrestrial lifeform known as "Darling", Safe Trip have unearthed two more aural explorations. The first is called "Sim". It is the subject's most alien and otherworldly composition yet, combining mind-altering rhythmic elements with elastic electronic bass and chords. The second, "Moon Fleet", can only be described as next-level sci-fi daydreaming. Since "Darling" had no access to electronic hardware or musical instruments during his time in Safe Trip's holding facility, they have absolutely no idea how this music came into being.

STEIGER And Above All 10"
Ghent-based piano trio Steiger have earned their place in the ever-growing peloton of young Belgian jazz innovators. As a result, they won the Young Jazz talent price at the 2017 Gent Jazz Festival. With their luscious and rigid grooves in minimalistic framing, they cast themselves between SCHNTZL and De Beren Gieren, likewise minded young Bel-jazz bands that don't take it so closely with traditions. They play jazz with a rock n' roll attitude. Sdban Ultra present a sampler of their debut album And Above All on a limited 10" vinyl. This release marks their introduction on Sdban Ultra, with a forthcoming sophomore album. And Above All houses both jazz and modern compositions, avant-garde and experimental electronics. Steiger takes inspiration from jazz and refers to the traditions but equally pulls those apart, for example in the chaotic miniature "Bachfag" and in the intimate "Inverse/Reverse". With "Berlin Revisited" the band clearly chooses electronic instrumentation. It is reminiscent of the electronic jazz of the noughties: bands like Triosk, Sofa Surfers, and Flanger did not so much work towards jazz but used the genre as a stepping stone to dive into the cosmos. Steiger are launching themselves into infinity on this track with a pounding beat, shrill cymbals, overdriven keys, and an unwieldy bass.

MILLS, SIMON Harmonic Jigsaws Vol. 1 2LP
Simon Mills rose to musical prominence as one half of electronic duo Bent, alongside production partner Neil "Nail" Tolliday. Harmonic Jigsaws Vol. 1 is the first studio album released under his own name, having released solely as Napoleon for the best part of a decade. The album follows on from several disco-tinged EPs and a blissful remix of CamelPhat and Elderbrook's hit "Cola", one of the biggest club tracks of 2017. As a part of Bent, Mills and Nail set the electronic dance world on fire with their critically acclaimed album Programmed To Love, released in 2000. After releasing five studio albums the pair took a break to work separately. Harmonic Jigsaws Vol. 1 marks the first in a series where Simon ambitiously explores and encapsulates the more melodic, wistful, and atmospheric side of his music output, paying tribute to Bent's unmistakable sound and the more emotive quirky side of his later work as Napoleon. The title itself derives from Simon's synesthesia, a condition where one sense such as hearing is simultaneously perceived by one or more additional senses such as sight. Simon's synesthesia causes him to associate colors and shapes with musical notes, harmonies and patterns, as well as letters and words. The album features standout tracks "Springtime (Fire And Honey)" sampling vocals from legendary pop-folk vocalist Sally Oldfield, alongside "THIFOL", "Listen", and "Getaway", featuring vocalist Joel Hood, originally brought to Simon's attention after being drafted in to produce Joel's music. In Simon's words: "We got on so well together, with the love of the same eclectic music; house, disco, Balearic, strange library music oddities, 1950s doo-wop, '60s soul and various soundtracks... I loved Joe's voice and songwriting, so it was obvious that we had to collaborate." Over two years in the making, this landmark release is one of Simon's most cohesive works to date and celebrates a characteristic sound he has spent two decades developing and nurturing. Double LP comes in a gatefold sleeve; Includes download code.

VA Flowers From The Ashes: Contemporary Italian Electronic Music 2LP
Double LP version. 180 gram vinyl; Comes in matte-finish, gatefold sleeve; Includes download card. Flowers From The Ashes: Contemporary Italian Electronic Music is the latest multi-artist project to bear the acclaimed Stroboscopic Artefacts imprimatur. There is a sensibility of decadence and corroded grandeur etched within the album, reminding you that historically "decadent" times have nonetheless resulted in some of the boldest acts of individual and collective creativity. Like the "floral" theme that has remained a consistent feature of S.A.'s graphic presentation, the music here equally presents fragility and intensity in a way that really drives home this visual metaphor for good, while still holding out the promise that similar creations will be seeded in the near future. Though many of the artists involved have set of residence outside of their native Italy, all contribute here to make a captivating portrait of a shared spirit and cultural memory. The album opens with "Errori", deceptively fragile sonic ornaments crafted and suspended in space by Blackest Ever Black artist Silvia Kastel. This is followed closely by the mellifluous, warming glow of percussionist Andrea Belfi's "Spitting & Skytouching", and then by the resolute electric bass patterns and luminous fog of "Lux Et Sonus" from Eeri label head Marco Shuttle. Hospital Productions alumnus Ninos Du Brasil enters with a similarly dense, amorphous construction built from tribalistic chants and rhythmic patterns, to be followed by Mannequin label boss Alessandro Adriani's "You Will Not Be There For The End", showcasing his distinctive take on the "paranoiac breakdance" aesthetic of classic EBM. S.A. veteran Chevel comes in with interlacing several percolating synth lines together into a richly conversational piece. The journey continues with "Starving The Mind", an undulating mini-epic from S.A. founder Lucy that is animated by his signature balance of seductiveness and concentration. The bright, biting acid synth tones of "PRV-HH3-X", by Lory D, then takes a sharp right turn into an invisible metropolis ruled by reflective high fashion and hidden intrigue. The imposing architecture of "Virgo Rebellion", designed by modular synth futurist Caterina Barbieri, acts as an excellent companion piece, and sets up the closing "4G" from Spazio Disponibile co-founder Neel -- a crepuscular serenade that accurately sums up much of the foregoing activity.

SPACEMEN 3 Playing With Fire LP
"Spacemen 3 began assembling their third album, 1988's Playing With Fire, at perhaps the freest, most confident point in their career. Recording began with the band road-tested and rugged, even amidst the functional volatility that famously motivated their course. The sessions' first offering came in the form of 'Revolution,' a single of heroic Stooges-devotion and the most commercially successful release the group had to date. High expectations for the album were soon exceeded, as Playing With Fire would become Spacemen 3's crowning studio achievement and cement their rightful place on the vanguard of otherworldly rock 'n' roll. An exquisite mix of stuttering tremolo guitars and wistful melodies, Playing With Fire sheds any trappings of revisionism and furnishes a nuanced grade of psychedelia. Epic entries like 'Suicide' (named after the notorious NYC band) and the mesmeric 'How Does It Feel?' catch Spacemen 3 at their celestial apex, the very point where their collective writing, performance and production would crest and wondrously splinter. SPACEMEN 3 Recurring LP
"1990's Recurring, the fourth and final studio album by Spacemen 3, is often considered the introduction of two brilliant solo projects (Spectrum and Spiritualized) rather than the work of a functioning band. While Spacemen 3's departing statement surely reveals a deep divide within the S3 camp -- each side of the LP was written by Sonic Boom and Jason Pierce separately and, unlike previous releases, the two do not play on each other's songs -- Recurring maintains a cohesive, dreamy feel with its chief sonic officers backed by fellow travelers Will Carruthers, Mark Refoy and Jon Mattock. Opening saga 'Big City (Everybody I Know Can Be Found Here)' marries ambient haze with narcotized indie rock, while 'I Love You' manages to arrange a beautiful flute alongside a defiantly throbbing bass track. 'Hypnotized,' a reimagined fuzz-pop hymn, would become the group's first entry in the UK Singles Charts. Recurring lays bare the essence of Spacemen 3's persistent sound, rooted in both aural expansion and phenomenal songwriting. Includes download card and new insert with liner notes by Marc Masters."

LYBES DIMEM Syncleft Chronem LP
Lybes Dimem is a project by visual artist and musician Lukas Rehm. With a focus on digital sound design, elaborate beat structures, and the use of error, the music plays with cognitive phenomena and abstraction while maintaining an emotional refuge. Lybes Dimem is presented in formats ranging from spatial sound experiences to synesthetic shows complementing the auditive layers with visualizations of real-time data, computer graphics, and moving image. Lukas Rehm's installation art and compositions have been internationally presented and awarded with multiple emerging arts prices. Syncleft Chronem is the first album released by Lybes Dimem in both digital and vinyl format and accompanied by a moving image artwork. The title reflects the project's interest in the potential of difference, cognitive frictions, and exertion: sync = variability in the processing of auditive and visual signals, syncleft = the synaptic cleft, which is a crucial empty space in biological neural networks, chronem = the chroneme as a theoretical unit to measure the time of an articulated sound. Mathematically clean sounds juxtapose patterns and transitions familiar from the realm of organic acoustics. Multi-layered noise textures explore the simulated space. A temporary continuity is provided by percussive and melodic elements, right until the next escalation, eventually awaiting a concluding resolution. The visual language explores different phenomena and techniques of cognition inspired by the rhetorics of big science (computer graphics, discontinuity of material, pop cultural references). Both the moving image artwork and the graphic design of the release pay tribute to the multi-layered approach of the music. The design of the vinyl cover by studio BNAG.cc uses subtractive color synthesis to interchange between abstract formality and representationalism. Syncleft Chronem is the first release by Lybes Dimem on SVS Records following a first encounter at the SVS residency at the 4D Spatial Sound Institute in Budapest.

KENNEDY, INIGO Strata 2LP+CD
Double LP version. 180 gram vinyl; Includes CD. Inigo Kennedy has released upwards of 100 records since he started in 1996, cementing his esteemed aesthetic and revealing his digital mastery further with each release. This immense discography embraces both the traditional and the ambitious; prevalent fundamentals and established concepts meet discord, clashes in texture and supreme use of space. Kennedy's 2007 record Identify Yourself was Token's first release. Although Kennedy was well-established by this point, that inaugural step taken together, with Token as a newcomer, began the much-needed growth of the label in a period of time when techno music yearned painfully for a refresh. This was the beginning of a close relationship between artist and label that has remained fruitful through the 11 years of Token's existence. Kennedy is now long-recognized as an integral contributor to Token's output; the label is the indisputable natural home for his sixth album, and in turn he continues to play his part in advancing Token's evolving sound with this release. Strata expands conceptually on the idea of planetary layers alluded to in Magma/Mantle, released in February 2018 (TOKEN 079EP). The album progresses through levels of ornate drama, opening with "Clarion Call (Return to Nothing)", a full-length refix of the celebrated introduction from Kennedy's 2015 release of the same name (TOKEN 058EP), showing off the best of his melodic manipulation and creativity in sound design. This delicate grace is cut through spectacularly by the jaggedness of the approaching textures of "Trapezoid", while the elegant and icy beauty of "Stillness Expanded" is impacted by the noisy and epic "Reminiscence", which grand and almost clerical in its resounding majesty. "Shudder" grounds the record in restrained grit and provides functionality, while the opening fanfare of "Breaking Point" advances yet another degree of energy. The record's built-up intensity is broken at its conclusion by the sleepy, acid-tinged "Oblivion" -- one that bumps along with a drowsy breakbeat and invites the mind to wander. With Strata, Kennedy proves once again that his reserves of passion, skill, and potency are far from depleted; that there is yet more to be discovered in the depths of his imagination.

KIRCHIN, BASIL I Start Counting! LP
Sublime unreleased score for the weird cult/brutalist thriller I Start Counting! (1970). Charming, odd, and affecting score by Basil Kirchin, made "in association" with his regular cohorts, Jack Nathan and John A. Coleman. The film was directed by the multi-talented and quite radical David Greene. Greene was also an actor, a successful producer and had already employed the services of Kirchin for his 1967 horror The Shuttered Room and quirky crime thriller The Strange Affair (1968). I Start Counting!, notably starred a 14-year-old Jenny Agutter, is set in brutalist Bracknell, with Agutter's character living in Royal Point, a classic "threepenny bit" of a 1960s tower block. When she ventures away from the safety of this concrete castle on an obsessive, erotically charged journey, her world is turned upside down. As macabre, coming-of-age thriller, the score for I Start Counting! allowed Kirchin to explore more dark edges of film music and composition: as a score, it bubbles along with lots of classic Kirchin hallmarks, but here you are also treated to a beguiling opening song that is lyrically and musically developed and then slowly pulled apart over sequential cues. There is also an unusual Eastern tinge to some of the percussion and Kirchin's distinctive pastoral oddness is here too. His sonic jumps between low drama and high tension are extraordinary, and his use of free jazz to bring about unease is both perfectly simple and effective. Basil's original idea for the opening song was to have it sung by Cilla Black or Jenny Agutter, but in the end Lindsay Moore, the daughter of jazz chum Barbara Moore stepped in. The score is mighty fine but a little short, so included here is more unreleased soundtrack material from the Kirchin archive -- a tape labeled "Third World Documentary". This dates from the early 1980s and was produced for either TV or a festival and musically complements the first score well, even though they are two decades apart. The names of the musicians working here died with Basil, but the drummer for I Start Counting! may well have been Clem Cattini, Evan Parker was more than likely involved with the session, and possibly Derek Bailey too. As for the later recording, there is a distinctive modern "Fairview" sound to the cues and production. Mastered and sequenced by Jon Brooks, AKA The Advisory Circle.

CASUAL HEX Zig Zag Lady Illusion LP
"Casual Hex is a three-piece formed in Seattle, WA, in 2015. Drawing influence from a variety of genres (post-punk, no-wave, noise rock), The band relies on the contrast of heavy, catchy, minimal, and dissonant. It's difficult to draw a direct lineage, but flashes of Pylon, The Contortions or early Sonic Youth come to mind. Erica's voice is a commanding narration, stern in delivery. Lyrical content is heady and cryptic, encouraging the listener to question human behavior and inspire positive change. Clocking in at 21 minutes, Zig Zag Lady Illusion is as much of a full length as you're gonna get with most songs not even hitting the 2-minute mark. This is Casual Hex's debut on Water Wing and their first effort to be pressed on vinyl. Limited to 300 copies."
