JPATTERSSON Folks & Fanfare LP
LP version. It's been around three years since JPattersson opened up a whole new horizon of formerly unheard possibilities between the worlds of dub and techno with PROGaDUB (ACKER 005CD/004LP, 2015). A lot has been happening ever since, and that's very noticeable on his second album, Folks & Fanfare. It still has all the signature elements of JPattersson: There's his dreamy, virtuous trumpet play and his witty vocals, there's his dubby delays and heavyweight beats which often line up in a downbeat rhythm. However, besides his fanfares there's now also many folks, many musical friends who contribute to the vibe of this album. There's a track with Berlin MC Longfingah, as well as a stylistically wide range of remixes that reflect the symbiotic cooperation and mutual inspiration of these last years. Also features Superpendejos and Timboletti.

BORBETOMAGUS (1st) CD
Restocked; originally released in 1995. The trio of Jim Sauter (reeds), Don Dietrich (reeds) and Donald Miller (guitar) are practically an American institution at this point. For the better part of two decades they have raised the mantle on intense improvisational sound parameters into one of the most unique sound configurations heard on planet earth. Heavy noise, deeply coiled feedback manipulation, hair-raising electronic squeal, and the ultimate in air propulsion explosiveness, all initiated by humans. Pretty much every home could use at least one Borbetomagus recording; this CD is a reissue of their debut album from 1980, with the addition of Brian Doherty on electronics. Includes a previously-unreleased track.

ALMA NEGRA Eritrea EP 12"
Dedicated to the music of Eritrea, on this EP, Alma Negra showcase the music of the Saho People from the Region of Zula. Alma Negra's "Haleto Lale Lalô (Saho)": Complete with that global clarion call of partying it up, the ululate trill, this is again a call-and-response vocal pattern, seemingly at odds with the somber backing track. SOL's "Erytrea Nèdègé (Saho)": a previously unreleased edit from the band -- a minimalist percussive belter, driven along by an eerie vocal-loop, until a male vocal introduces the main melody that eventually bursts into a full call-and-response chant with a female choir.

HIROAKI, SASAKI EO EP 12"
Losoul's Another Picture label follows on from EPs in 2017 by Honesty and the label boss himself with a new two tracker by Japanese artist Sasaki Hiroaki. The Yotsume label owner is based in Tokyo and his sleek sounds take cues from '80s new wave and look for a soulful vibe in electronic music. "EO1" is eight minutes of rubbery drums and loose, scattered percussion, tumbling toms and clicks. "Plain Song" is just as heartfelt, but icy hi hats and metal stabs are more upright -- eight minutes of organic, authentic deep house bliss.

PALESTINE, CHARLEMAGNE Aa Sschmmettrroossppecctivve LP
Composer, musician, visual artist, and performer, Charlemagne Palestine is a legendary figure in the New York underground scene. At the piano or on his electronic oscillators, this outsider of skillful music experiments with the principles of resonance and repetition in a quest for the "golden sound": the ultimate harmonic vibration. Based in Brussels for 20 years now, his iconic work consisting of teddy bears, divinities, and other enchanting encounters is exhibited in BOZAR (AA SSCHMMETTRROOSSPPECCTIVVE, May 18-August 26, 2018). For the occasion, Charlemagne Palestine also presents two exceptional musical performances at the Kunstenfestivaldesarts. Published on the occasion of Charlemagne's AA-SSCHMMETTRROOSSPPECCTIVVE exhibition, audioMER. present historical piano recordings dating from circa 1974. They were played on a Bösendorfer model 220, regarded as the "Rolls Royce" of pianos, at Charlemagne's 64 North Moore Street studio, Tribeca in New York. The music here represents Charlemagne's infamous "strumming" technique.Charlemagne Palestine was born Chaim Moshe Palestine in Brooklyn, New York of a Jewish immigrant family from Odessa and Minsk in 1947. At six years old he started to sing traditional Jewish cantorial music in the synagogue. At the New York University, he began composing electronic music at the NYU Electronic Music Studio run by Morton Subotnick where he worked with electronic synthesizer oscillators and filters which he would name "Spectral Continuum". Later Subotnick invited him in 1969 to relocate to Los Angeles and participate in the creation of a new radical school for multimedia, arts, music, dance, and theater known as the California Institute of the Arts. There he met happening artist inventor Allan Kaprow, video pioneer Nam June Paik, avant-garde composer James Tenney, fluxus artists Emmett Williams, Dick Higgins, Alison Knowles, and Judson Dance Theatre member and artist Simone Forti with whom Palestine created a unique music and dance form called "Illuminations" in 1970, which they have continued to perform irregularly over the last 45+ years even just recently at Centre Pompidou, Paris and MoMA, New York. At Cal Arts he developed many different practices: electronic and acoustic sound works, body performance art, video art and multimedia installations. With Forti he was invited for the first time to Europe to perform in a festival in Rome in 1972 where he met La Monte Young, Philip Glass, Steve Reich, and Terry Riley. With his revolutionary solo piano work Strumming Music (1974), he was included in the new musical trend known as minimal music.

ZABIELA, JAMES Balance 029 2LP
Following the release of Balance 029 (BAL 022CD), Balance Music issue a double-LP release, featuring a handpicked selection of James Zabiela's favorite tracks from the compilation. The release features his own acid-charged "X-Ray", alongside a re-work of "Vines", his other original track from the mix, that will be released exclusively on this vinyl package with a remix by London artist HOLOVR. COOPER, MAX Balance 030 2LP
Double LP version. Includes MP3 download of the mix. Max Cooper's blend of the artistic and scientific schools of thought have steadily built him up to become one of the standout electronic musicians of his generation. His left-of-center approach makes for a truly timeless mix for the 30th edition of the Balance series. Cooper emerged from Nottingham's club scene in the 2000s, holding down a residency at the city's influential Firefly nights where he played turntablist sets across six decks with his fellow resident. From there he became an eminent producer of brooding, densely melodic techno. He has since turned into a more multifarious artist who borders experimental electronica, ambient, and IDM within and alongside his dancefloor-driven output. Wearing several hats these days -- DJ, producer, label owner with his burgeoning Mesh imprint, creator of art installations, consultant for new technologies -- he is a veritable polymath. On a technical level, the mix is drenched with subtle detailing, editing, rearranging -- even binaural processing only audible on headphones that appears to make sounds move around the listener's head in all directions. Exclusives come in the form of Coopers's own "Balance (Perc Tool)" -- self-explanatory -- and the blissful depths of "Music Of The Tides", constructed using an intricate binaural particle cloud simulator plugin created by Rob Clouth. Clouth also provides three other tracks on the mix. New English act Brecon provide sumptuous broken beat electronica on another exclusive, "Half Light", and Cooper's remix of Nils Frahm's Juno-60 based live jam, "For", which finally gets an official release. During this incredible 118-minute odyssey you'll hear field recordings, brooding soundscapes, hypnotic piano modulations, deep atmospheric techno, heavenly melodies, glitchy electro-pop, hazy ambient passages, ravey breakbeats, glitchy drum & bass, and even some Thom Yorke (Atoms For Peace). Also features Ben Lukas Boysen, Bing And Ruth, Kimyan Law, Com Truise, Alix Perez, and Vaetxh.

LUCIER, ALVIN Criss-Cross / Hanover LP
Limited repress. Black Truffle present the premier recordings of two recent works by legendary American experimental composer Alvin Lucier. Lucier has been crafting elegant explorations of the behavior of sound in physical space since the 1960s and is perhaps best known for his 1970 piece I Am Sitting In a Room (LCD 1013CD). He has written a remarkable catalog of instrumental works that focus on phenomena produced by the interference between closely tuned pitches, often using pure electronic tones produced by oscillators in combination with single instruments. Demonstrating the restless creative drive of an artist now in his 80s, the two recent works presented here both feature the electric guitar, an instrument Lucier has just recently begun to explore. In "Criss-Cross", Lucier's first composition for electric guitars, two guitarists using e-bows sweep slowly up and down a single semitone, beginning at opposite ends of the pitch range. The piece exemplifyies Lucier's desire not to "compose" in the conventional sense, but rather to eliminate everything that "distracts from the acoustical unfolding of the idea". In this immaculately controlled performance of "Criss-Cross" by Oren Ambarchi and Stephen O'Malley, for whom the piece was written in 2013, a seemingly simple idea creates a rich array of sonic effects -- not simply beating patterns, which gradually slow down as the two tones reach unison and accelerate as they move further apart, but also the remarkable phenomenon of sound waves spinning in elliptical patterns through space between the two guitar amps. In the comparatively lush "Hanover", Lucier draws inspiration from the photograph on the cover, an image of the Dartmouth Jazz Band taken in 1918 featuring Lucier's father on violin. Using the instrumentation present in the photograph, Lucier creates an unearthly sound world of sliding tones from violin, alto and tenor saxophones, piano, vibraphone (bowed), and three electric guitars (which take the place of the banjos present in the photograph). Waves of slow glissandi create thick, complex beating patterns, gently punctuated by repeated single notes from the piano. The result is a piece that is simultaneously both unperturbably calm and constantly in motion. LP design by Stephen O'Malley; Includes inner sleeve with a portrait of Alvin Lucier by Kris Serafin. "Criss-Cross" recorded at Studios Ina GRM, Paris by Francois Bonnet and mixed by Alvin Lucier. "Hanover" recorded in Zurich and mixed by Alvin Lucier. Mastered and cut by Rashad Becker at Dubplates & Mastering, Berlin.

AMBARCHI/KASSEL JAEGER/JAMES RUSHFORD, OREN Face Time LP
Face Time is the second release from the trio of Oren Ambarchi, Kassel Jaeger, and James Rushford, following on from their 2016 debut Pale Calling (BT 020LP). Recorded at the GRM studios in Paris in June 2017, the record immediately returns to the idiosyncratic sound-world of the trio's first release, a simmering stew of electronic smears, pitched-down animal moans, and mysteriously emotive microtonal organ chords. But before long the record takes an unexpected turn, as sounds that initially enter as occasional percussive pitter-patter build to a halting rhythm. Equally reminiscent of Basic Channel-style dub techno and the sound of a microphone loose in a pocket, these stumbling rhythmic figures provide the framework for the remainder of the record's two sides, occasionally receding into the background to allow squelching electronics, chiming bells, distorted autoharp, inchoate grunts, and the sound of a Cristal Baschet to take center stage, but each time returning with the inevitability of an idée fixe. Eschewing any clear sense of form, the two side-long pieces move seamlessly through episodes with the organic flow of improvisation, embracing the happy accidents of events conjoined by chance and lingering on liminal moments. Gradually washing out into a cavernous roar, the record's final moments are suddenly enlivened by shimmering metallic percussion and a sequence of woozy synth chords, combining with the muted rhythms and a distant thunderstorm to become a sort of oneiric tribute to the work of Wally Badarou. Bringing together three of contemporary experimental music's most individual voices, Face Time is an essential slice of outsider electro-acoustics. Cover design by Stephen O'Malley. Mastered and cut by Rashad Becker at Dubplates & Mastering, Berlin. Comes on neon orange vinyl.

INCHINDOWN Inchindown LP
The self-titled LP is not a collaboration record between the two London based artists -- Tim Garratt (Moon Zero) and Matthew Heywood (Bruised Skies). Inchindown is a project focused on exploring ambient territory only hinted at with the two artists' solo work. Inchindown is a powerfully mournful and beautifully stark work, the soundtrack to walking through a storm of ash only to realize that the city is on fire whilst viewing this incredible spectacle from afar. Beautifully dark yet constantly hopeful, the album also pays homage to older and forgotten areas of their hometown of Hackney through field recordings. Notably "Ridley Road", a section of Hackney that houses a huge indoor and outdoor market and has been victim to violence over the years, features heavily as a repeated motif; a genuine and uniquely recorded atmosphere engulfs the listener at every stage of progression in this three-part work.

BLANK FORMS Blank Forms, Vol. 2: Music from the World Tomorrow Book
Music from the World Tomorrow, the second issue of Blank Forms' journal, brings together a combination of never-before published, lost, and newly translated materials. Featuring Marshall Allen and the Sun Ra Arkestra on the cover, this issue also includes John Corbett's writing on the enigmatic annotations found on Sun Ra's reel-to-reel tape archives. Visionary avant-garde jazz vocalist Patty Waters speaks with Larry J. Nai about the art and experiences that moved her from childhood to the then-now, touching upon her mysterious '70s and '80s period of musical inactivity, in a rare 1997 Halana interview reprinted here. "I struggle," a prose poem by Matana Roberts, explores the creative conundrum of making American music in a state of national crisis under POTUS #45. Maryanne Amacher remains a focal point of this second issue, with three pieces here: scholar Amy Cimini contributes a text detailing the genesis, score, and theoretical underpinnings of Amacher's Adjacencies; Joan Brigham presents Scott Fisher's account of his career working with virtual reality and 3D stereoscopic imaging; and an excerpt from science-fiction writer Olaf Stapledon's Last and First Men is reproduced, a favorite of Amacher's. Tony Conrad is represented twice: Filmmaker Andrew Lampert introduces a selection of Conrad's OLD IDEAS in full color -- handwritten notes from the mid-1960s through the mid-1970s; and a new transcription of a 1989 phone interview by Alan Licht. Conversely, in her rediscovered 2001 interview with Marcus Boon, Swedish minimalist Catherine Christer Hennix praises La Monte's revival of just intonation. This issue also features a transcription of a 2017 Annea Lockwood talk and conversation with crys cole, discussing Lockwood's Tiger Balm (1970) and Ear-Walking Man/Woman (1996). Bassoonist Dafne Vicente-Sandoval contributes a text that sheds light on the performance of Jakob Ullmann's threshold compositions Muntzers stern (2015) and Solo II (1992), forthcoming on Editions RZ (RZ 1038-39CD). And Klaus Lang provides both an aphorism about cow behavior and a manifesto for compositional strategies. Krautrock group Anima's 1981 US tour diary has been newly translated from German for inclusion here. A chapter from David Hopkins's recent translation of legendary Japanese folk singer Kan Mikami's autobiography is featured. Composer Tashi Wada contributes a print titled Double Vision. And Japanese sound art pioneer Akio Suzuki's self-published 2008 Aki-nyan, tora no maki gets a full reprint. Edited by Lawrence Kumpf and Joe Bucciero. 333 pages; 6x8 inches; Edition of 750.

VA Chebran Volume 2: French Boogie 1979-1982 CD
Born Bad Records present the second volume Chebran, a series focusing on French boogie. The French in the '80s were not faint-hearted: as some threw themselves heart and soul into music or business, others wouldn't mind going bottomless to get themselves noticed. While Bernard Tapie soon realized his own fortune was rather to be found in business, many music-loving dreamers already imagined themselves in the sun, in an enchanting world made of funky rhythms and synthesizers. While the French National Front was growing in the shadow of François Mitterrand, these guys mixed New York-style funk with electronic, Eastern, or African sounds. With their genre-crossing arrangements and often chanted lyrics, they brought honor to the "SOS Racisme" generation, unconsciously outlining the nascent French contemporary urban culture. The French, while admiring Grace Jones' "savage beauty" in Jean-Paul Goude's advertisements, were enjoying their freshly-gained fifth week of paid vacation, tanning on the beaches of Maghreb. Following The Clash's example, punks and rockers converted to reggae, and the new independent radios opened up their programming to "world music". At the other end of the pyramid, the successive waves of immigration enriched France in a much better way. With the rise of "Youth and Culture Centers", the practice of musical instruments became affordable for those of humble background, allowing for new bands to appear. Caught between the spirit of Gallic bawdiness and their own community hopes, the musicians from this singular scene probably didn't succeed in life the way Bernard Tapie meant it. But their explorations left no room for doubt: by facilitating the rise of a new hybrid culture about to give birth, among others, to French hip-hop, those little-known artists indeed were off on an adventure, quite simply. Since the '60s, numerous venues destined for the North-African community had appeared all over France. In those bars and nightclubs, Eastern 45s were broadcast as well as local productions combining Raï, Frenchy funk, or proto-hip-hop. Thanks to the cassette tape medium, new songs kept circulating between Paris, Lille, Strasbourg, Marseilles, and many other urban areas -- mainly among the working class. The artists appearing on these compilations progressively shaped a new style, blending sounds from their original cultures and from their adopted country. Features Phil Barney, JM Black, Ettika, Sammy Massamba, Shams Dinn, Alfio Scandurra, Philippe Chany, Nordine Staiffi, Brigitte Et Michot, Alec Mansion, Marie Jose Fa, Hamidou, Ganawa, Creole Star, Manu, Ethnie, and Joel Ferrati.

VA Looking Back LP
"Compilation of Sam Cooke's great production work for his independent SAR label. SAR Records was founded by Sam Cooke and JW Alexander in 1959 and closed in 1965, shortly after Sam passing away. Nobody knows what 'SAR' stood for. Sam kept that secret and died with it. (Maybe it was 'Sam and Alex Records'?). They had one employee -- Zelda Samuels. She wrote songs, handled all publishing and distribution and ran the office more or less solo. Their office was just two desks and a piano in a tiny room. SAR records was the kind of small family affair that Stax was in its early years and Motown pretended to be. The label produced both Gospel and secular recordings, all with the odd distinction of sounding almost like Sam Cooke. SAR co-founder J.W. Alexander explains the goals of the label as such: 'We wanted to give young black artists the benefit of as good a production as they could get with a major company. We used the top studios. We didn't short-cut. We never thought of it as a training ground. We thought of it as an opportunity to contribute something back to the community.' This compilation features Gospel side by side with soul and R&B songs. Classics by RH Harris, the Simms Twins, The Womack Brothers, The Valentinos, The Soul Stirrers and more. Old school 'tip on' cover and a classy black inner sleeve. One-time limited pressing."

LOIZOU, SOPHIA Irregular Territories LP
Irregular Territories is a new EP of hyper jungle-ist future sickness by Bristolian sound artist Sophia Loizou for Shapednoise's Cosmo Rhythmatic label. Sophia's first release since the much acclaimed Singulacra (KTX 004LP, 2016), Irregular Territories provides a definitive example of Loizou's sound as it firmly asserts her music in a rarified hauntological rave headspace that meticulously explores an exploded deconstructionist style that she's developed since her 2014 debut Chrysalis. With one foot in late '90s halcyon daze, and another toeing the future, Sophia combines a lust for the ruffneck with a sharp mind for complex structural integrity and inventive aesthetic. Synching fragmented beats with human gasps, choral synths, and richly ephemeral textures, she bridges temporalities and dimensions in a way that recalls an auditory DeepDream composite formed from millions of eyes-shut moments at Metalheadz sessions. Album opener "Loop Of Perception" quite literally takes off like a jet engine in the rave, while "Memories Of Angels" conjures and sustains a lump-in-throat suspense through unresolved pads and hide 'n seek breakbeat edits, before it all comes together, gelled by wide, pressurized subs in "Shadow Box". The brief vignette of hoover and percolated vocal motifs in "Frozen Dust" opens up the B-side like some Arca and EVOL collusion, and "The Interior Life Of Another" feels like a jungle inception of 4Hero's Parallel Universe (1994), leaving the poignant "Morphogenesis" to sum up the metaphysical flux of her sound in febrile detail. RIYL: Lee Gamble, Demdike Stare, The Automatics Group. Mastered and cut by Matt Colton at Alchemy.

UMOJA I-NITY Feel The Groove 12"
At the beginning of the 1980s, Fifi Yawson and some other members of the Ghanaian band, Gem Movement, moved to the city of Hanover in Germany. There they met the Trinidadian drummer Martin James who had previously played with the 20th Century Steelband in England for several years. Thanks to his work as a studio musician, Martin was well connected in the Hanoverian music scene where he met sound engineer Thomas Rugel during a recording session. Together with the Ghanaians Fifi Yawson, Francis Dansei, Sam Asante and Tom Blay they formed the group Umoja I-nity. Other members of the band were Christine Clinton and Nyemah George Williams (who both had previously worked with Hugh Masekela and Miriam Makeba) as well as Ingo Erlhoff and Jochen Rose from Germany. In autumn 1982, Thomas Rugel recorded the band's debut album, a mixture of afrobeat, funk, disco and Caribbean influences, at the UTV Studio in Hanover. In April 1983 the 12" Feel The Groove / Foxy Sourcy Lady appeared on the local GeeBeeDee label which was more specialized in Pop music and 'Neue Deutsche Welle'. Despite a tour of Germany and some TV appearances in the spring of 1983 the band remained an insider's tip, and the sales of the first maxi were rather poor. Negotiations with the Teldec, and Deutsche Grammophon record companies to release the album on a major record label failed. After the lack of success, the band dissolved shortly afterwards and the master tapes of the unreleased LP disappeared in Thomas Rugel's archive - until some of them see the light of day on Cree Records for the first time! Fifi Yawson: keyboards, synthesizers, vocals and percussion, Sam Asante: saxophone, Nyemah G. Williams: vocals and lead guitar, Francis Dansei: bass and percussion, Christine Clinton: vocals, Tom Blay: congas, timbales and percussion, Martin James: drums and percussion."

PERRY & THE UPSETTERS, LEE 'SCRATCH' Return Of Django / Eastwood Rides Again CD
"A year after embarking on a career as an independent producer in 1968, Lee 'Scratch' Perry hit the big time when the mesmeric sax-led rock steady instrumental, 'Return Of Django' made number 5 in the UK charts. Soon after, Trojan released a hugely popular collection of the producer's most popular instrumental releases to date, suitably titled after the best-selling single. Perry's remained at the cutting edge of the reggae scene throughout the months that immediately followed, with tracks by the Upsetters (essentially the name given any set of musicians employed for his recording sessions) proving particularly popular among both Jamaican and British music fans. In response, Trojan issued a second Spaghetti Westered themed instrumental-based album comprising the enigmatic Jamaican's work that further demonstrated his increasingly bold and innovative approach to music making. Now, almost 50 years after the original release of these historically important long-players, they have been brought together to form this immensely fascinating and hugely enjoyable CD collection. Annotated by Lee 'Scratch' Perry biographer, David Katz, this is a must for all fans of both the producer and vintage reggae sounds."

ORA ISO Image Certifies LP
Regis's Downwards label presents an album of heavy-hearted industrial songs from Ora Iso, making a kind of windswept, slowed-down, and gothic pop variant that's essential listening if you're into HTRK, Tropic Of Cancer, or Clay Rendering. Ora Iso are an NYC-hailing band revolving around Indonesian-Australian, Kathleen Malay and New Yorker, Jason Kudo. Building on the rubbly ground of their Bathcat debut for Ba Da Bing! (2014), the duo's mutual sense of entropy and ennui results in a classically scorched sound in Image Certifies, one laced with scornful sarcasm and a general dissatisfaction with the world, and yet somehow bolstered by the slightest promise of hope. Weighing in their heavy, bleeding hearts on ten brittle dirges described by the band as "A love letter to a society dying of its own self-induced cancers", Ora Iso play to Downwards' most maudlin aspects with a sound that clearly resonates with their previous releases by Eyeless In Gaza or Tropic Of Cancer, but here blessed with a strung-out, unyielding, and lugubrious quality they can surely call their own. As will become patently obvious, Image Certifies is not a record that takes itself lightly, and when the mood is right, the blend of Kathleen Malay's stark, cracked, gothic vocals with Jason's Kudo's cranky as hell Vainio-esque instrumental backdrops is a perfect accompaniment to moments of introspection and misanthropy. From almost BM-styled beginnings on "No Fish", their agenda becomes apparent as it grows into a slow rolling fog of distant, evocative vocals wailing worn-out nothings about "the future" and "the children" in an effortlessly sensuous and blank-eyed style that worms through the record, peaking in highlights such as the jagged "Dead Riot", and the folksier trudge of "Pour It On Me", whilst the bollocked drums of "From The Hallway To The Door" and the exquisitely succinct "Have I Gone Too Far?" packs a more gothic electronic crunch recalling NIN or Clay Rendering. Cut by Christoph Grote-Beverborg at Dubplates & Mastering.

Now, The Black Dog's two new albums, Post-Truth and Black Daisy Wheel (DUST 055CD/LP), translate their growing horror into some of their most accessible and impactful music, translating our manufactured reality into high-energy dancefloor constructions on Post-Truth, and reflective ambient excursions on Black Daisy Wheel. Long familiar with the tropes and pitfalls of esoteric undergrounds, in both the pre- and post-internet eras, The Black Dog have ventured deep into contemporary conspiratorial cultures with a trenchantly critical eye. In the '80s, conspiracy theories were a tonic for a skeptical mind, a stimulant to agile thinking. Today, they have become the stock in trade of mainstream political influence. The scene has morphed into a rabbit hole where nothing is "really" real, everything is a hoax, and everyone is out to get you. The mindset is beyond paranoid, the discourse so far post-fact that only opinion and assumed identity matter. Arguing against proven science is a part of the entry criteria, and willful pedantry its standard currency. The impact on mental health is corrosive: fear, uncertainty, and doubt multiply and replicate until the most ridiculous theories are invented to explain the most basic things: tarmac, banana skins, duvets. Auto-suggestion is rife, where willing victims drink bleach (MMS) at the behest of YouTube videos, flat-earthers are taken seriously, and the manufactured fearful believe they are being gang-stalked for finding monsters on pixelated screens. The distinction between the real world and the world of an auto-hoaxer is so blurred that reality melts away. You couldn't make it up, even though that is exactly what the conspiratorial fringe (now one sharp corner from the mainstream) always do. As soon as you start engaging with people in the so-called "truth movement", one minute it's painful, but the next can be genuinely funny; these are people who are both on edge and upon the edge of a larger social and political reality that, for worse and for (even) worse, defines our times. Hence these two very different albums. Black Daisy Wheel is reflective, often intense, frequently compassionate; while Post-Truth was written while The Black Dog was fully engaged with people whose paranoia was in full swing. PONCET, ROMAN Gypsophila 3x12"
Listening back to Roman Poncet's first releases on Figure in 2013, they already hinted at the producer's keen technical abilities and a knack for rich texturing, resulting in tracks that were both carried by force and form. What he delivers now is an impressively mature debut album, ripe with personal creative realization. On Gypsophila the French producer uses the extended format to slowly shape up a scenery of epic proportions where surprise and constant change lurk around every corner. A certain sense of progression and evolution runs throughout Poncet's music; it invariably keeps one locked in, no matter for the opening drones of "Do Not" or the patiently growing "Thick Vegetation", which fuses tribal percussion and choral chants to showcase another of this LP's key features: its dense soundscape, which at once feels inherently electronic yet deeply organic, translating the abstract futuristic themes of techno into something jam-packed and heady albeit steadily grounded -- a listening experience that is as dreamy as it remains tangible. This holds true for the highly atmospheric synth-lead pieces, such as the cinematic intro "Hello You", the elevating Arp-ride "Épreuve", or the suspended celestial groove of "Atlas". But equally goes for the floor-focused rhythms, like relentless steam engine-workout "Piège" or mid-album mind-trip "In Aeternam". Adding even more variety and depth to the mix, the tidal title track is given its own side to explore the sheer endless expanses of dub... Bundling the complete range of his influences, Gypsophila marks the pinnacle of Roman Poncet's work to date. Covering a spectrum this broad in his very own way, the album proves as relevant for the current club scene as it will be for repeated return visits.

VA Pomegranates 2LP
2018 repress; originally released in 2009. Pomegranates collects some of the finest Persian pop songs ever recorded. Many are acknowledged classics within Iran and throughout the Iranian Diaspora. Some are obscure. This collection is a trove, ripe for discovery and rediscovery, and worthy of inclusion in the canon of idiosyncratic musical gems from the global south. Most of contemporary Iran's artistic and creative leanings, and its grapples with history and identity, are loosely and mystically conjoined and contested in memory. Iran is marked by the complex interplay of diverse constituencies, philosophies, and influences -- ethnic, religious, political, geopolitical, and historical. As in many other countries, the '60s and '70s were a time of tumult in Iran, bringing growth (via petrodollars) and freedom (under the banner of socioeconomic development) while exacerbating inequalities within the country. The music and voices that blossomed during those decades exemplify the turbulence and excitement of the age. It is worth recognizing these left-out and lost artists individually and as a group when considering the global happenings of '60s/'70s psych, rock, and folk, while exploring their influence and relevance since. This collection endeavors to recontextualize these songs from the realm of reminiscence, nostalgia, and memory into a specific and accessible narrative to share and relate within the universal musical gamut. It is for aficionados, the curious, and collectors alike. The recordings excavated here are highly sexual musings, voluble love songs, simple folk tunes, and subtle works of political protest. Includes performances by Zia, Mohammad Nouri, Mehrpouya, Googoosh, Kourosh Yaghmaei, Parva, Nooshafarin, Soli, Marjan, Sima Bina, Ramesh, and Dariush.

GOOGOOSH Googoosh LP
2018 repress; originally released in 2011. Googoosh collects some of the rarest records from the East's best-kept secret songbird, Googoosh, including forgotten B-sides and mythical LP tracks. Despite her reputation as one of the most legendary Iranian pop stars, Faegheh Atashin aka Googoosh is also the performer of some of the rarest heart-melting pop music in the world, originally pressed on the diminishing vinyl format. Her 1970s songs and performances were banned after the Iranian Revolution of 1979, resulting in her records being forbidden, hidden, and destroyed. Some of Googoosh's most famous songs have since become anthemic among global Iranian communities, but in a darker contrast, dozens of 45 B-sides and album tracks remain only as distant and nonexistent memories in the minds of the most devout fans and fastidious vinyl librarians. Googoosh focuses on a handful of these lesser-spotted tracks -- the ones that didn't get away. Googoosh's voice conveys an urgency and yearning that is arguably unrivalled under the often-disposable femme-pop umbrella. Mid-tempo pulsating pop paeans awash with expertly orchestrated strings (akin to those of some of the most intense European film composers) provide the backdrop for songs of unrequited love and poetic premonitions of impeding cultural heartbreak. Other tracks combine unlikely jazz, bossa, and early disco influences, which inadvertently incited political paranoia from the era's brooding anti-pop regime. Boasting deep roots in the history of Persian poetic verse and indelible Arabic songcraft, these lost tracks from the artist known among Farsi-speaking fans as "Iran's Daughter" have most certainly earned a place in the hearts of all outernational music lovers.

CIANI, SUZANNE Buchla Concerts 1975 LP
Restocked. The lost synth manifesto that could have changed the course of electronic music history by the first lady of modular synth history, Suzanne Ciani. Buchla Concerts 1975 is an archival project that not only redefines musical history but boasts genuine claim to such overused buzzwords as pioneering, maverick, experimental, groundbreaking, and esoteric, while questioning social politics and the evolution of music technology as we've come to understand it. To describe this record as a game-changer is an understatement. This record represents a musical revolution, a scientific benchmark, and a trophy in the cabinet of counterculture creativity. This record is a triumphant yardstick in the synthesizer space race and the untold story of the first woman on the proverbial moon. While pondering the early accolades of this record it's daunting to learn that this record was in fact not a record at all . . . it was a manifesto and a gateway to a new world that somehow never quite opened. In 1975, Suzanne Ciani was a 29-year-old employee of the Buchla modular synthesizer company, San Francisco's neck-and-neck contender with New York's Moog. If the unfamiliar, modernistic, melodic pulses, tones, and harmonics found on this 1975 live presentation/grant application/educational demonstration had been placed in a phonographic context, they would have provided nothing short of an entirely different, feminine take on the experimental records of Morton Subotnick and proved to a small, judgmental audience and jury the true versatility of one of the most radical and idiosyncratic musical instruments of the 20th century. In denouncing her own precocious, polymathematic past in a bid to persuade the world to sing from a new hymn sheet, Suzanne Ciani created a byproduct of never-before-heard music that would render the pigeonholes "ambient" and "futuristic" utterly inadequate. These recordings have not been heard since then. Needless to say, this record, finally commanding the archival format of choice, was not the last "first" that this hugely important composer would gift to society and the future, in a wide range of exciting, evolving creative disciplines in the worlds of synth design, advertising, and film composition. You have found a holy grail of electronic music and a female musical pioneer who was too proactive to take the trophies. You can't write history when you are too busy making it. With fresh ink in the bottomless well, let's start at the beginning. Again. You are invited.

TURNING JEWELS INTO WATER Which Way Is Home? 12"
"Turning Jewels Into Water, the deep-beat ceremonial think-tank that sees the coming together of percussionist/rhythm-prophet Ravish Momin and Haitian experimental electronic engineer Val Jeanty, are set to expose the contaminating realities of our dysfunctional, dystopian present with an infectious blast of Blade Runner-esque retro-future. Half-organic, half-machine, total binary breakdown; their incendiary debut release, Which Way Is Home?, plots an emphatically liberated path. The duo's alliance was initiated in the fall of last year in Brooklyn, NY, during a jam session at Pioneer Works, the creative locus for prime multi-disciplinary misadventure, where Momin held down an artist-in-residence slot -- but that pact has rapidly evolved into a honed ritual revelation, where disembodied voices rise up amid scattered rim-shots and digital detritus, territories formerly deciphered in the linguistic dreams of hip-priest poet Nathaniel Mackey, where Martian phantasms encrypt gnostic cyphers between the tributaries of burnt-down cabling. Dial into the 1980s amusement-arcade delta of 'Lights Below The Water', the post-apocalyptic synth and abused syntax sprawl of the title-cut and set your course for home, anyplace where the absurdist jungle-temples of Raymond Roussel and Brian Catling are being cultivated by the cyber-horrors of Shinya Tsukamoto's Tetsuo and the mischief-making syntax-gremlins of Kenji Siratori's Burroughsian novel Blood Electric. Which way's home? Take a tumble through a telescope. Pick your own planet. Home can be anywhere you make it. Which Way Is Home? EP features three original tracks, along with two remixes by Nyege Nyege Tapes-affilliated, Kampala-based producers Slikback and Zilla."

HARRIS, EDDIE Plug Me In LP
"Saxophonist Eddie Harris -- a favorite sample staple of jazz-leaning hip-hop producers of the '90s -- was a very busy man in the 1960s, releasing albums at a brisk pace since his first as a leader in 1961. By the late '60s he had fully hit his stride, as both a performer and an innovator. A case in point is heard very clearly on this gem from Harris' expansive catalog -- 1968's Plug Me In, which features his pioneering use of the Varitone saxophone effects processor unit (first heard on his 1967 album, The Tender Storm). The effect, used on 'It's Crazy' and 'Ballad (For My Love),' never gets in the way, but gives the proceedings a feeling of 'the next.' 1968 saw jazz entering a new era, influenced by electronic advances as well as the soul music dominating the pop charts of the day. Plug Me In slid perfectly into the vanguard of the day. There is a soulful warmth to the proceedings on this classic LP, starting with album opener 'Live Right Now,' which builds and swirls to a beautiful crescendo, with notes ricocheting back and forth amongst a top level crew of players including Jodie Christian, Chuck Rainey and Richard Smith. 'Lovely Is Today' and 'It's Crazy' also feature waves of sunshine-y brass and group interplay, alongside album ballads like 'Winter Meeting' and 'Ballad (For My Love).' Eddie Harris' catalog can be daunting, considering his impressive input throughout the 60s and 70s, but there's a reason fans old and new come back to Plug Me In again and again. Innovation and soul is a combination that never fails, and this reissue is destined to bring more fans into the fold."

AMENT, PAT Songs LP+CD
"In 1971, at the age of 25, Pat Ament self-released his debut album, Songs By Pat Ament, in a very limited run for friends and local shops. The album is sparse and moody, conjuring a space not unlike the one that Songs Of Leonard Cohen occupies, featuring Ament on Wurlitzer with a jazz drummer and a guitarist alternating between acoustic and electric. It's dark and at times forlorn, with meditations on yearning and loss and love. It's ideal long-night-of-the-soul music. The lyricism evokes Dylan, Cohen, Tim Hardin and Bill Fay. When he released Songs, Ament was already a world renowned mountain climber, and he became famous for pioneering '60s and '70s ascents in Colorado and Yosemite. He wrote poetic books and essays on climbing, including biographies of legendary climbers Royal Robbins and John Gill. Through the years he's balanced multiple simultaneous careers as artist, photographer, filmmaker, chess master, karate black belt, lecturer, teacher, and, yes, singer-songwriter. Pat Ament's musical mastery was clear right out of the gate but it was only one of his many interests. Perhaps if he hadn't been moved to pursue life's other tempting summits and focused solely on music, he'd be as well known for his songs as for his climbing. Grapefruit is extremely proud to reissue this rare and virtually unknown singer-songwriter masterpiece, sourced from original sources and under Ament's supervision, with original artwork and deluxe Stoughton tip-on jacket. The record also comes with a bonus career retrospective CD entitled Time Moved On of additional songs hand-picked by the artist."

VA London Is the Place For Me 2: Calypso & Kwela, Highlife & Jazz From Young Black London 2LP
2018 repress; originally released in 2005. Another installment of amazing music from the first wave of modern black settlement in England. The focus remains on the '50s, with classic calypsos running alongside the African jazz of Ambrose Campbell -- the father of modern Nigerian music -- and some blistering high-life. Among the contributions from the '60s there is some South African kwela (featuring Chris McGregor) and a jazz-dance percussion workout from the Trinidadians who put the Notting Hill Carnival on London streets. The LPs are housed in a gatefold sleeve with a beautiful folded insert. There is a trenchant introduction by Paul Gilroy, full discographical notes, and numerous wonderful photographs. Includes tracks by Young Tiger, Ambrose Campbell, Mona Baptiste, West African Rhythm Brothers, Lord Kitchener, Lord Beginner, The Lion, Tunji Oyelana, Shake Keane & His Highlifers, King Timothy, West African Swing Stars, Gwigwi Mrwebi, Russ Henderson, and Rans Boi's Ghana Highlife Band.

STRETCHMARKS The Stretch M-Arkhives CD
A seldom heard band existing at the end of the '80s comprising founder members of Stock, Hausen & Walkman and the drum/bass rhythm section from Nico's backing band and The Blue Orchids, and a maverick vocalist. All in turn under the influence of Allen Ravenstine, David Moss, Gareth Sager, James Blood Ulmer, Bootsy Collins, Herbie Flowers, John "Drumbo" French, Robert Wyatt, Ronald Shannon Jackson, Don Van Vliet, Gabi Delgado, etc., they attempted to meld the noisier end of free improvisation with a slightly more oblique and accomplished funk than the Manchester "baggy" sound of that era. An album release cobbled together from studio demo, rehearsal room, and live recordings. CV Edit Service - Special Delivery Vol. 4 A Collection Of Dysfunctional Edits By CV 2LP
The Edit Service is back and for the first time in album format, double-LP. Special Delivery Vol. 4 A Collection Of Dysfunctional Edits By CV contains eight tracks spread over two records: long edits, reworks or even remixes made from obscure music by the enigmatic CV (it shouldn't be too hard for people to figure out who is behind it). "Fish Liquor" is an edit of a German synth wave tune from a limited run cassette released in the '80s, extended and tailored for the dancefloor. "Porte Dorée" features French vocals. The original comes from a rare and cult post-hippy art rock record from the late '70s, condensed into a downtempo yet dancefloor edit. "Ship From Rimini" is the remix of a vocal Italo tune from the early '80s. It has all the hallmarks of a classic of the genre, yet there is something about both its groove and melodies that stands out. On "Pieces Of A Sultan", the raw material comes from a highly popular rock band of the '70s. New instruments were added and the producer takes the tune in a krautrock, almost experimental direction. "Armazém" opens the second LP. One of the most dancefloor-friendly cuts on the album, from a post-industrial and nearly trancey tune from Brazil. "Canaille Bleu" comes from a mid-80s French film which soundtrack was never released. The edit uses the dialog from the film and live instruments. The result is a cinematic and dubby number with Gallic tendencies. "Spanish Codeine" is an Iberian Eurodance record played at the wrong speed, to which elements were added in order to create an edit that goes to completely new directions. With "Racines Incertaines", the producer slowed down a disco funk tune from the late '70s, then recreated it from scratch, giving a cosmic dimension to this groovy number. No digital! Single pressing; Edition of 500.

NECKS, THE Unfold 2LP
2018 repress. Ideologic Organ present Unfold, brand-new recordings from The Necks, the legendary Australian trio who excel in bypassing musical cliche whilst exploring and extending the practices embedded within improvisation, jazz, post rock, ambient, minimal, and textural, "sound based" music. The latest document from this long-running ensemble presents itself as a double LP, with four side-length tracks. A deliberate absence of numbered sides hands a substantial swatch of participation over to the listener, allowing her to navigate his own path through the soundscape at hand. The shorter length of the vinyl format, far from being a constraint upon the members of the ensemble, instead offers them a more compact horizon to contemplate, wherein the distance travelled is recalibrated to more immediate and dynamic textural concerns. The immediacy of "Rise" confirms this new path, as the mournful tones of Lloyd Swanton's bass swirl around Chris Abrahams's crystalline piano motif, with Tony Buck's percussion steering proceedings into enlightening free-jazz territories. "Blue Mountain" cuts a swathe through the sonic undergrowth, with soul organ, rattling percussion, whistles, and loping sound-waves all vying for the foreground. "Overhear" retains a sublime melancholic aura as the percussion and keyboards simultaneously embrace and fall apart, whilst "Timepiece" skips along as a gentle gesture of further possibilities. Exactly how The Necks conjure their particular magic - as deceptively simple as it seems - whilst always moving forward, is anyone's guess, but Unfold proves yet again that rules and schools are to be broken and re-formed into patterns and frameworks unlike those already known. Mastered & cut by Rashad Becker at Dubplates & Mastering.

URINALS Negative Capability 2LP
2018 repress. "'Double-vinyl release of The Urinals' Negative Capability, originally released by Amphetamine Reptile on CD in 1996. Before changing their name to the less restricting 100 Flowers and becoming one of the most respected underground post-punk-pop acts in the US, Los Angeles's seminal trio released eleven songs during their 1977-1980 tenure -- ten on their three 7-inch singles and one more on a 7-inch compilation, all on their own Happy Squid label (they were about the only Los Angeles band to do that back then). This retrospective triples their output to 31 songs! Want to hear America's Wire, only twice as primitive (if that's possible), with one quarter the sound quality? Even when they are covering the Soft Machine's 'Why Are We Sleeping?' they sound like a three-step primer on minimalism, in scratchy, fast, burping, nutso punk with clipped vocals. You can see why the Minutemen covered 'Ack Ack Ack Ack,' but it's the real solid, melodic stuff -- such as the Last-inspired harmonies of the great A-sides 'Black Hole' and 'Sex,' and 'Scholastic Aptitude,' and the instrumental 'Surfing With the Shah' (which foreshadows the coming of 100 Flowers and later offshoot Trotsky Icepick) -- that makes so many Angelinos remember this goofy but great trio so fondly. Negative Capability has an unrelenting, authoritative intelligence and sense of humor.' --Jack Rabid"

VA Spiritual Jazz 8: Japan Part One 2LP
Repressed. Double LP; Part one of two double LP versions. Textured, gatefold sleeve; Obi strip. Jazzman Record's latest examination of esoteric, modal, and progressive jazz of the 20th century has taken them to Japan. The liberating force of jazz has been created and felt all around the world, but few nations on earth embraced the jazz message with the passion and intensity of Japan. From the dawn of the jazz age to the present day, Japanese audiences have been renowned tastemakers, enthusiasts, and champions of the music -- in the 1980s, Japan was the biggest per capita market in the world for jazz records, and it has even been said that Japanese jazz fans kept the jazz record industry alive through the lean years of the 1970s, when the music fell from commercial favor in the land of its birth. But while the jazz aficionados of Japan are celebrated as sophisticated fans and consumers of the music, comparatively little is known outside Japan of the remarkable and abundant music produced by generations of Japanese jazz musicians. Numerous Japanese jazzers have found enormous success on the international stage -- Toshiko Akiyoshi, Sadao Watanabe, Teramasu Hino, and many others are household names among jazz listeners all over the world, and with good reason. But if such global figures are put aside, the stunning heritage of Japanese jazz remains poorly understood outside Japan. As a result, the work of many celebrated Japanese jazzmen has remained largely unknown to international audiences, and the extraordinary scope and depth of Japanese jazz has not been widely recognized. Compiled for the Spiritual Jazz series in collaboration with the celebrated collector and DJ Yusuke Ogawa (Deep Jazz Reality, Tokyo), this set aims to correct that omission by uncovering the uniquely deep sound of esoteric, modal and progressive jazz from Japan -- music of the heart, soul, and Japanese spirit.Part One features: Mitsuaki Kanno, Tadao Hayashi, Minoru Muraoka, Takeo Moriyama, Koichi Matsukaze, Sadao Watanabe & Charlie Mariano, Shungo Sawada, New Direction For The Arts.

EMANATIVE Earth CD
Orbiting somewhere between the interplanetary funk of Sun Ra and the cinematic experimentation of Floating Points lies the new album Earth from the spiritually awakened Brit-jazz collective Emanative. Led by drummer and producer Nick Woodmansey, Emanative have created a cosmic strand of multi-cultural UK jazz with African, Indian, and Middle Eastern influences unlike any other act on the UK scene. Following on from their previous record on Gilles Peterson's Brownswood label back in 2015, Earth celebrates the diverse backgrounds of its galaxy of contributors, which includes Idris Ackamoor of US spiritual jazz legends The Pyramids, Afrobeat legend Dele Sosimi (previously of Fela Kuti's Africa 80), key protagonist from Manchester's jazz scene Nat Birchall, India-raised Ninja Tune artist and Shabaka Hutchings-collaborator Sarathy Korwar, Ibibio Sound Machine player Ben Hadwen, Benjamin Page from RocketNumberNine, The Heliocentrics' Malcolm Catto, and Flying Lotus collaborator Ahu. Initially Emanative was an output for Woodmansey's more beat-led productions which he began releasing in 2008. Over the course of a decade and a multitude of singles and three full-length albums, the project has morphed -- emanated -- into a collaborative, jazz-influenced, outward-facing globally-inspired collective. 2015's The Light Years Of The Darkness album release was a key turning point and a record that saw Woodmansey work with a stellar cast of contributors featuring amongst others Keiran Hebden, aka Four Tet, and trumpeter Ahmed Abdullah. Born in 1975 and growing up in Sussex, music was part of Nick's life from an early age as his dad Mick ("Woody") Woodmansey was the drummer with Bowie's Spiders From Mars. His father instilled in him a life-long passion in drums, teaching him the basics. Plans to go to art college were shelved after he moved to London in 1991, squatting in Dalston, and ensconsing himself in the London music scene. A few years later Woodmansey took a 12-month gig playing drums on a cruise ship, before returning to the UK and spending the next decade playing on the London scene in various projects whilst raising a family -- it was there he decided to go it alone and so in 2006 Emanative was official. The Earth record encouraged Nick to delve deeper into his spirituality.

LEER, THOMAS 1982 CD
"Thomas Leer needs no introduction. His album The Bridge, recorded with Robert Rental, and released by Industrial Records in 1979, is a classic of its genre. One year earlier, he put out his first solo single 'Private Plane', a classic until today that was the blueprint of what was later to become synth pop. In 1985 Thomas left the indie scene and signed to Arista Records. He released an album called The Scale of Ten which is full of beautifully arranged pop music. Two years later he formed the duo Act together with ex Propaganda singer Claudia Brücken, releasing an album and several singles, being signed to ZTT Records. After the band's split, Leer released two more records, the first being an experimental album of beats without vocals, the second being From Sci-Fi To Barfly, which was released by Klanggalerie on CD and is still available. 1982 is a collection of songs written that year that for one reason or another never made it onto any official release until Leer released them on his bandcamp page. Klanggalerie are now proud to present them on CD -- another must-have archive release from one of Britain's pioneers in electronic music."

BLURT Poppycock CD
"Blurt was founded in Stroud, UK, in 1979 as part of the post-punk movement by poet, saxophonist und puppeteer Ted Milton along with Milton's brother Jake, formerly of psychedelic group Quintessence, on drums and Peter Creese on guitar. After three albums Creese left the band to be replaced by Herman Martin on synthesizers who, after a year of constant touring left the band, and was replaced by Steve Eagles, former member of Satan's Rats, The Photos and Bang Bang Machine. Shortly thereafter Jake Milton left to be replaced by Nic Murcott, who was subsequently replaced by Paul Wigens. Most of Blurt's compositions feature simple, repetitive, minimalistic guitar and/or saxophone phrases, but they can also explore more abstract musical territories, often serving as an atmospheric backdrop for Ted Milton's existentialist poetry. The music has been described as dada-avantgarde-jazz or paranoid jazz-mutant funk. Practically impossible to pigeonhole. Poppycock was released on the band's own Toeblock label in 1986 and features song classics such as 'Man To Fly' and 'Down In The Argentine'. The album was remastered for CD by Martin Bowes of Attrition."

RED BRUT Red Brut LP
Red Brut is the moniker of Marijn Verbiesen (part of Sweat Tongue and JSCA). As Red Brut she is isolated, displaying a highly talented ear for day-to-day sounds, musique concréte composition, and spontaneous sound collage. The Kraak record series -- documenting off-stream's currents -- presents her self-titled debut, recorded at home and re-arranged in the come-down of an immersive tour in Japan. The seven chapters document an intuitive and reflective journey through sensitive amateurism and hi-end musique concréte. The main instruments are cassettes, but unlike the continuous strain of post-noise releases, Verbiesen's music is highly personal, subtle, and displays an ever curious and astonished mind. Sounds of gaming interweave with brutal synth oscillations, melancholic melodies, and sensual-absent poetry from the aether. Although rooted in the sinister absurdism of early 2000 experimentalism, her music embraces and redefines the concept of "music of the universe", coined by John Cage, Daphne Oram, and alikes. This stand-out record is a sketchbook documenting a wide array of obscured emotions, unveiling the inner soul of a highly talented and unique voice in avant-garde tape music. Artwork by Marijn Verbiesen; design: rr-jw. Edition of 300.

VACTROL PARK Music From The Luminous Void LP
Only one month after the release of their first EP on Malka Tuti in May 2018 (MALKA 017EP), Vactrol Park continue surprising, this time with a full LP in the shape of Music From The Luminous Void. The album sees Vactrol Park delve much deeper into more atmospheric realms. Using modular synths and unexpected drum machine sequencing they leave the 4X4 beats behind in favor of off-world rhythms and ever-growing bass. Starting with the high frequency tension of "Drop", laying on top of those heavy kick drums it keeps on growing and growing. From there it moves to the "End Of The Party" groove that is "Novikov's Notation", and its trippy monotonic rhythm. The A-side ends with the heavy sampled ambient track "Macbeth", bringing forward that mesmerizing flute solo by Italian artist Luca Spagnoletti yet succeeding in avoiding the kitsch, and with a touch of class. The B-side delves even deeper into ambience and atmospheric muzak. Starting with "Bells", that features again Spagnoletti on flute. Then you get into the real gems of the album -- "Anstruther" and "Glove". The first is a pure trip into modular psychedelia and repetitive jazzy-like drum rhythms, creating tension right from the start and plays with it throughout the track before decaying slowly into "Glove", which is in sense both the catharsis and the decompression session of the album. Like a 2018 version of Vangelis, this track's soundscape will keep you dreaming with your eyes closed long after the album ends. Vactrol Park is Guido Zen and Kyle Martin.

VA Belgian Nuggets 90s-00s Vol. 2 2LP
Double LP version. Gatefold sleeve. Mayway Records' treasure trove filled with Belgian gold nuggets is far from empty. Volume 2 comes just six months after the initial launch of the label's compilation series (MAYWAY 002CD/LP, 2017). Part one of Belgian Nuggets 90s-00s was a smash hit. The label chalked up rave reviews both at home and abroad, and even famous Dutch writer Nico Dijkshoorn sung praises for the album in a column. Of course, all the accolades were just another impetus to outdo ourselves with Volume 2. Whereas Volume 1 was a blend of many different genres -- from heavy guitars across Brit and synth pop to hard electro beat, mellow soul, and cabaret -- the second installment will have the feel of a genuine album, albeit without abandoning the treasure hunt vibe that characterizes the series. Several big names were gracious enough to contribute to this sophomore release such as Dead Man Ray, Mauro Pawlowski & The Grooms, Vive La Fête, and Lunascape (with ex-Hooverphonic singer Kyoko Baertsoen). Simi Nah, Paper Fox, and the Walloons Of Piano Club -- with Melanie De Biasio's twin sister Catherine on the mic -- serve up sublime electro pop, whereas Barbie Bangkok, De Bossen, Black Shark, Basics, and Party At Vanzetti's (the band of Bart Vanneste, aka Freddy Devadder) cater to guitar and edgy (garage) rock enthusiasts. Also included are squeaky clean pop songs by Sugar Kane and Red Elmo, pining indie pop gems by The Germans and Confuse The Cat, laid back, night-clubby jazz pop by Stuffed Babies On Wheels, and a majestic "Air-meets-Moby" instrumental by Delavega. The only Dutch-speaking song on the record is the exquisite avant-garde track "Ten Dans" by De Legende, a project by Elvis Peeters (ex-Arome Di Amore), who has meanwhile made a name for himself as a writer. And finally the fantastic cult single "Constant (Raving)" by the mysterious Sue Daniels, is the kind of song that perfectly captures the essence and the raison d'être of Belgian Nuggets 90s-00s. Like Volume 1, this second installment of the series boasts a unique design and detailed liner notes. Once again the label were lucky enough to snare a renowned photographer: Frieke Janssens. Also features Sunday Afternoon Soundsystem, Sue Daniels, and Stuffed Babies On Wheels.

"Compilation of Aboriginal Australian country music. When we say country, it is a broader category than you might imagine. This LP contains all kinds of sounds. The cosmic organ driven dream song of Black Allan Barker, the drone-y intensely political Glararrwuy Yunupingu, the straight up rocking Warumpi Band, the ballad singing of Maisie Kelly, the down home pop of Bobby McLeod and much more. A diverse cross section of Aboriginal 'country'. All of this material has never been reissued on vinyl before. Political and powerful songs from communities throughout Australia. This is a truly unique LP. Comes with extensive liner notes and photos. A co-release with our friends Flipping Yeah Records."

L.B. DUB CORP Side Effects 2LP
Reflecting on a career spanning three decades, Luke Slater is a true dance music legend. The British producer has not only been pivotal in the rise of techno but his work continues to play a vital role in driving the genre forward, particularly under his Planetary Assault Systems name. Following its launch in 2006, Slater's L.B. Dub Corp moniker has been responsible for refreshing house music on labels like Mote Evolver and Ostgut Ton, with the latter hosting the pseudonym's debut album in 2013 (OSTGUT 029CD/015LP). Side Effects is the project's first body of work since then. Slater on the recordings: "I wrote the tracks over the last year between being on the road as P.A.S. and playing a few L.B. Dub Corp house sets, which naturally evolved into Side Effects almost accidentally." Crashing stabs and a rolling hook inaugurate the album in "Reel One" before the meandering "Night Time Hawk" demonstrates effervescent effects and bursts of white noise. Commanding kicks and a moody bassline make up the robust "Edge 7" whilst "IELBEE" exhibits a bouncy aesthetic complete with intricate melodies. "Float When You Can" is dark and ominous from the off but an echoing note sequence adds a glimmer of light, making way for the reverberating mechanics of "Bass Machine" before leading into the twisted sounds and ghostly air of "Forever In A Day". Nearing the end, "LBEES Jam" is the most lighthearted track on the album with its twinkling lead melody until Slater rounds off the release with a soulful and vocal driven affair "All Got To Live". "Edge 7" features Aurelie Yung. 180 gram vinyl. Includes download card.

WRONG WATER Dozen LP
Kiev-based label Muscut opens 2018 with an LP from St. Petersburg musician Eugenii Fadeev (Flaty). Raising the attention of the musical community with his work for the 12th Isle and GOST ZVUK labels as AEM Rhythm Cascade, he's also recently released on Udacha and his own label ANWO as Dada Ques. In addition to the aforementioned, Flaty also adopts such aliases as Ocurob and Wrong Water. Under the name Wrong Water, he presents this current release of a dozen tracks, most of which were recorded purely using analog instruments. Drawing inspiration from the music of such electronic pioneers as Delia Derbyshire, Bruce Haack, Mort Garson, and others, Wrong Water is an attempt to qualitatively re-think the heritage of the '70s and '80s. Thus, through tireless experimentation, Fadeev manages to create his own inimitable neo-library parable. Full of graceful flickering stars and midnight tropical breathing, Dozen is a welcome addition to the endlessly fascinating world of Muscut. Performed, recorded, produced, and mastered by Flaty. LOWMAN, LEON Liquid Diamonds LP
2018 repress. Following on from co-compiling one of 2012's best-received compilations Into the Light: A Journey into Greek Electronic Music, new Amsterdam-based record label Music From Memory sets sail with a compilation of lo-fi beach funk and lazy synth jams from the Rhode Island keyboardist and ocean-loving Leon Lowman. As well as a devoted painter and East Coast surfer, the synthesizer-loving Lowman privately released two albums Syntheseas (1980) and its follow-up cassette-only Sound Horizon (1982). Something of a homage to his love of the local seashore and the women he was trying to woo there, the albums also express Leon's pure love of the sound of the synthesizer and reflect his unique melodic wanderings. With Leon's albums meeting little commercial success at the time of their release, both albums have in recent years become highly sought-after. Along with previously-unreleased material from the time, Liquid Diamonds highlights Leon Lowman's unique blend of lo-fi synth-funk and surf ambience.

GAUSSIAN CURVE The Distance LP
2018 repress. In the spring of 2016, Gigi Masin, Jonny Nash, and Marco Sterk got together in the studio for the first time since they recorded Clouds (MFM 004LP, 2014), the critically acclaimed debut album from their Gaussian Curve project. By the time they reconvened in Sterk's new studio in Amsterdam, a stone's throw away from the temporary, second-floor space where they recorded Clouds, much had changed. When they first got together in March 2014, it was for a spontaneous, weekend-long exploration of shared musical passions. They were merely three new friends expressing themselves, and having fun in the process. By the time they got together again last year, the album they recorded on that famous weekend had taken on a life of its own. To their surprise and delight, Clouds had become one of the most admired ambient albums of the 21st century. They'd initially reconvened in the studio to rehearse for their first live performances. It soon became clear that all three members were brimming with ideas for new Gaussian Curve material. Over the four days that followed, and fueled by the same spontaneous working method that drove Clouds, a new album began to take shape. Although their methodology remained the same, the inspirations were different. Whereas Clouds was intimate by design, The Distance reflects more on spaciousness, distance, and time. It is instantly recognizable as a Gaussian Curve record, but feels different in scope and tone. The Distance is a different musical beast to its predecessor, but shares the same timeless, emotion?rich feel that made Clouds such a hit. Still, the fundamental ingredients remain the same: Masin's masterly piano and synthesizer work, Nash's blissful, meandering guitar, and Sterk's synths, drum machines, and production. The Distance is an album brimming with fresh ideas, and more complex musical arrangements. It's the sound of three confident collaborators crafting magical musical moments in their own unique way. This expansive new approach can be heard on "T.O.R.", where Nash's haunting trumpet and hazy guitars wrap themselves around the kind of hypnotic piano and synth patterns that were once the preserve of American minimalist composers, in the gently breezy positivity of "Four For You", and in the loved-up chord progressions and bubbly electronic beats of "Breathe". Close your eyes, and you'll also hear it amongst the sunrise shuffle of "The Distance", Masin's hushed vocals on "Another Place", and within the kosmische-influenced sensuality of "Ceremony".

TAKAHASHI, KUNIYUKI Early Tape Works (1986-1993) Vol. 2 LP
The Japanese producer and DJ Kuniyuki Takahashi is the subject of Music From Memory's latest retrospective compilation with Early Tape Works (1986-1993). Composed of two volumes, the compilations gather together a selection of tracks from a tiny run of privately released tape only albums, highlighting a fascinating early period in Kuniyuki's musical output, one of which little is known. After discovering the world of nightclubs in Japan around 1986, and the seemingly boundless freedom expressed there through music as well as art, Kuniyuki became inspired to experiment with electronic music. Excited by the possibilities of new music technology, he would begin to gather together a number of, at that time, reasonably accessible and inexpensive local keyboards, drum computers, and recording equipment. This became for a way for Kuniyuki to explore music not as such made for nightclubs, but certainly inspired by them. Setting up a home studio in his hometown of Saporro, Kuniyuki would record extensively during this period with the equipment he had gathered together, equipment such as Roland's Juno60, TR-606, TB-303, Casio FZ-1, Korg 770, Boss DE-200, Foster A8, and a Yamaha MT44 track cassette recorder. Driven to develop a musical language derived as much by an exploration of music technology and a desire to create new sounds, Kuniyuki was also looking to evolve the possibilities of what he refers to as a "new Oriental sound". Early Tape Works )1986-1993) then brings together two albums of material which not only highlights the evolution of Kuniyuki's own work but also of Japanese electronic music as a whole.

Barker makes his solo debut on Ostgut Ton with a new experimental dancefloor EP. On Debiasing, he takes a hard look at the musical elements often considered necessary to maintain dancefloor momentum, with four distinct tracks of morphing synth stabs and paired down metronomic rhythms in varying time signatures. While there is no kick, snare, or clap to be heard, the result is not experimental techno deconstructions but driving, hypnotic and unlikely dancefloor tools. Inspired by the psychology underpinning relationships between producer/DJ and audience, Debiasing is an exercise in creating alternative paths within a techno framework.

ARTHURS TRIO, TOM One Year LP
"While working on One Year, trumpet player Tom Arthurs kept reshaping the scores. Since the bulk of the original material comprised of fragments, he was able to shift sections from one piece to the next in search of their ideal position. The inspiration had come from film: 'For his masterpiece Mirror, Tarkovsky had no story, no plan, no storyboard. He just shot a lot of material and then, for two years, he had these clothes lines in his house and was putting together the scene into different forms until he had the movie.' Most of the material is the result of a one-and-a-half month long stretch of quiet in between very busy phases in 2014. Three years later, the music from that bout of intense creativity is now released in a new ensemble constellation that sees Arthurs expand his long-time duo with pianist Richard Fairhurst to a trio with the inclusion of Finnish percussionist Markku Ounaskari: 'The poetry of Markkus's playing is astounding, he's never showing off, never pushing, his touch is so beautiful. He uses a pretty special drum kit with a concert bass drum.' As a consequence of the open-ended composition approach, many of the pieces juxtapose different approaches, from almost pure sound art via Feldman's long works to the essentialism of the Berlin reductionist movement. One Year opens up a space where everything feels connected and anything is possible, where quiet really is the new loud."

DOUGHERTY, BRENDAN Economy And Failure LP
Präsens Editionen present Economy And Failure, an LP by Berlin based musician Brendan Dougherty. Economy And Failure is a work stemming from two tumultuous years for the artist: births, deaths, and other big changes. The music was made in hotel rooms, airports, cafes, and various studios using a basic setup of laptop and headphones. In contrast to Dougherty's 2016 LP Sensate, which used heavy synth patterns to create jittering rhythmic pulses without drum sounds, Economy And Failure sees the drums return on longer arrangements that bear some resemblance to techno. These tracks are interspersed with shorter études in texture and pulse. The resulting pattern heightens the tension between minimalism and emotional depth, making Economy And Failure a peculiar and poetic piece that the artist himself counts as his most direct and emotionally connected yet. Cover photography by Justinas Vilutis. Typography by Kaj Lehman. Edition of 300.

VA Welcome To Paradise (Italian Dream House 90-94) Vol. III 2LP
Safe Trip is taking one final deep dive into the warm waters of Italian dream house with Welcome To Paradise Volume III, the concluding chapter in the label's journey through the previously overlooked world of one of dance music's most vibrant and influential underground movements. While the influence of dream house continues to echo through the ages, the style was at its peak between 1989 and 1994, when producers across Italy delivered a high volume of loved-up, wavy, and occasionally blissful productions that fused contemporary deep house tropes -- most notably from Chicago, New York, and New Jersey -- with elements borrowed from ambient, jazz, and Balearica. It's this six-year period that provides the focus for Welcome To Paradise Volume III, which draws together a spine-tingling mixture of sought-after classics, unheralded gems, and little-known delights from the original Italian dream house movement. Thrillingly, Welcome To Paradise Volume III co-curator Young Marco has managed to source two previously unreleased tracks during the dream house period: the gently unfurling, sunrise-friendly bliss of Jacy's "Resounding Seashell" and a special "Longer Edit" of Neurostate's brilliant "Dance To The House", a track that -- somewhat surprisingly -- has never previously been issued on vinyl before. Elsewhere, there are plenty of treats to set the pulse racing, from the must-have deep house brilliance of Leo Anibaldi's "Universal" -- a rare foray into dream house territory from the Italian techno pioneer -- and the Afro-bleep-goes-dream-house trip of Golem's "Sun City", to the cowbell-driven, New Jersey garage-influenced warmth of Deep Choice's "Children Trip" and Cosmic Galaxy's "Walkin' On The Moon", a Detroit techno-influenced outing with a deliciously saucer-eyed, extended ambient intro. You'll also struggle to find a more inspired house record than Green Baize's "Tramp Heart", which mixes familiar dream house elements with spacey electronics and tribal chants that recall Italy's early '80s Afro-cosmic scene. It all adds up to another essential selection of rich, glassy-eyed dream house treats tailor-made for sound-tracking drawn-out Adriatic sunsets, Mediterranean sunrises, and loved-up parties the world over. Also features Optik, Deep Blue, Lonely Dance, and Don Carlos.

ELECTRIC FAMILY The Long March CD
"So many words have been written about The Electric Family. That she teamed up in 1996 under the leadership of German independent veteran Tom 'The Perc' Redecker. That she has expanded and renewed constantly, that musicians from different genres contribute to the music of The Electric Family that simply cannot be classified. You know that the band does not fear to mix different styles like psychedelic, progressive rock, krautrock, folk rock, country & western, punk and hard rock. The result is this typical family sound, that animates critics to true hymns of praise, because no album sounds like the previous one. The salt in the soup are the many musicians who come to the performances and studio sessions. They are from krautrock legends such as Grobschnitt, Amon Düül II, Thirsty Moon or Lokomotoive Kreuzberg. But they also come from well-known German indie bands like Philip Boa's Voodoo Club, The Convent, The Pachinko Fake, Rhonda or the Lolitas, not to mention Pankow and Rockhaus, Die Ärzte and Emsland Hillbillies. Oh yes, with Ulla Meinecke, Angelika Weiss, Anke Lautenbach and Evelyn Gramel, the female gender has also left deep traces in the family sound. When a new studio album by The Electric Family called Terra Circus is released in 2017 -- after a break of ten years -- the sensation and enthusiasm is again great. And many young music lovers are astonished to find that there have already been a lot of recordings of the band before Terra Circus. That's why the band decided to put together The Long March - from Bremen to Betancuria. This compilation contains tracks from the first four studio albums Family Show, Tender, Ice Cream Phoenix, and Royal Hunt -- plus a few extra delicacies. It has not become a classic best-of album, the song selection is not based on their popularity but on the diversity of this exceptional formation."

WITTHUSER & WESTRUPP Der Jesuspilz - Live! CD
"Bernd Witthuser and Walter Westrupp have been active in the German folk scene since the 1960s. After Witthuser had co-organized the Essener Songtage (feat. The Mothers of Invention, Amon Düül, Guru Guru etc.) in 1968, the two musicians joined forces in June 1969 to a folk duo with psychedelic impact. (The duo can be counted on the very popular genre of acid folk then, where bands such like The Incredible String Band, Fresh Maggots, Syd Barrett and Tea & Symphony belonged to). First they called themselves W & W's Pop Cabaret, in 1970 they changed their name to Witthuser & Westrupp. The duo existed from 1969 to 1973, lived and worked together and also worked in sessions by Rolf-Ulrich Kaiser at this time, which appeared on several albums under the band name Cosmic Jokers. The third and most successful LP Der Jesuspilz - Musik vom Evangelium was produced in August 1971 in the wake of the Jesus movement. It was based on the book The Sacred Mushroom and the Cross by John Marco Allegro. The basic idea for this LP was to reinterpret the Bible. Thus, the 'Brosel' (engl. crumb) was declared the essence of life, and Jesus addresses his disciples as 'boys'. Biblical texts were musically translated and interpreted by Witthuser & Westrupp. The world premiere of 'Der Jesuspilz' took place on 25.11.1971 in the apostle church in Essen. The media response was huge, so that the duo then appeared in over a hundred churches in Germany and at German television. The songs on this album were recorded at the public rehearsal in the JZ (Youth Center) Essen a few days before the first church performance. A true historical sound document! Unfortunately, Bernd Witthüser could not live the release of this record, he died in August 2017!"

RONKKO, TATU Spheres LP
Spheres is not only Tatu Rönkkö's debut album, but it's also one of the most unusual entries in the Sonic Pieces catalog so far. As the de-facto reason for Efterklang starting off their new band Liima, Tatu is one of the most diverse and intriguing percussionists working today. Rönkkö appeared out of nowhere sometime around 2010, performing intense improvised concerts in home-kitchens around Berlin and abroad, using the room and everything in it as his instrument. On Spheres, which includes almost only self-made instruments from everyday objects, he's taken this idea to the next level. The kitchen and the improvisations around it have been concentrated down to six standalone pieces of music, produced in incredible detail. The sound hovers in the dark lands between tribal experimentations, '90s jungle ambient textures, and electro-acoustic endeavors. Pieces like "Then" are reminiscent of a more focused Aphex Twin performing with Konono Nº1 in the Finnish woods. While the title track "Spheres" even links the sound all the way back to early Photek with its reduced cinematic textures and explosive repetitive beats. All of this says rather little about the actual album as it feels completely its own. Especially the incredible centerpiece "Tekoäly", featuring Islaja on vocals, which sounds like nothing else. Rönkkö is a true visionary who manages to balance his mass of sound sources in an expert fashion. Spheres is an otherworldly listen. PLAN, THE Nervous Energy CD
The Plan has been described as "Talking Heads meets The Breeders", but their debut album Nervous Energy takes the band in a more progressive and experimental direction. Post-punk in origin, but with overtones of no wave, psych, and garage rock, the record flaunts its flexibility with a mismatch of emotions. Nihilism, humor, and pure joy compete and collude with an overriding positivity carrying all songs. The band's snappy lead single "Annotate The Text" boasts a repetitive, tumbling post-punk call-and-response, coming in at just over one-and-a-half minutes. Guitarist/vocalist Rebecca Gillieron says of it: "I used to be an editor, so this was probably written whilst I was meant to be working, and it's about taking control of reality, embellishing the best features of your existence, deleting negative factors, shaping the positive elements." Nervous Energy showcases The Plan's love of straight-forward, good tunes that get screwed-up by degrees. Fierce beats, unruly guitars, barely suppressed mania from the keys, and homemade-cello underlay soaring harmonies delivered by well-matched female vocals. "You can dance to it too," they claim. Originally the side project of Rebecca Gillieron from all-female trio Wetdog, The Plan has become a force of its own. Forming in the summer of 2016, this definitive line-up includes previous members of Vic Godard's Subway Sect, Private Trousers, and The Ghosts, and keeps itself close to home: half the members live together, some are married, many are related. Song themes shape-shift across the record; subjects range from childhood memories (" 'The Wall' was triggered by the memory of throwing a tennis ball against a brick wall at primary school for hours"), romanticizing about natural, local luxuries ("Abbey Wood"), abandoning inhibitions and jumping straight into the unknown ("Pier Party Nerves"), conflicting desires of wanting a nice, quiet, controlled, and peaceful life but at the same time harboring after extreme chaos and instability ("Bright Lights"), and the simple joys of being a parent ("Chorus"). "The perceptiveness of Ray Davies meets the eerie folk of Shirley Collins meets the unstopability of The Fall meets the combustibility of The Raincoats" --Tim Burrows "The Plan are as compelling as they are inventive, reminiscent of some of the more inventive post-punkers but with a power and creativity that is very much their own" --Zoë Howe

ARKBRO, ELLEN For Organ And Brass LP
2018 repress; LP version. For Organ And Brass is comprised of two works by the Stockholm-based composer Ellen Arkbro. Both works focus on tuning, intonation, and harmonic modulation. In previous projects, Arkbro composed for early music ensembles, wrote a series of durational pieces utilizing synthetic tones and processed guitars, and, most recently, presented a work lasting 26 days at the Stockholm Concert Hall. For Organ And Brass looks back to Arkbro's studies in just intonation with La Monte Young, Marian Zazeela, and their disciple Jung Hee Choi in New York, as well as with kindred spirit Marc Sabat in Berlin. The title composition was written for an organ with a specific kind of historical tuning known as meantone temperament. It was only after locating an appropriate instrument -- the Sherer-Orgel dating back to 1624 in St. Stephen's Church in Tangermünde, Northeastern Germany -- that Arkbro set about recording both for organ and brass and its counterpart, Three. "Hidden within the harmonic framework of the Renaissance organ are intervals and chords that bare a close resemblance to those found in the modalities of traditional blues music," explains Arkbro. "The work can be thought of as a very slow and reduced blues music." The work moves gradually through a series of long, sustained tones played by the organ and in parallel by a brass trio comprised of horn, tuba, and trombone. Arkbro's treatment of pitch resembles the tuning strategies of La Monte Young. The brass parts were performed by microtonal brass trio Zinc & Copper, a group whose repertoire has included works by C.C. Hennix and Christian Wolff. In Arkbro's words, "the brass instruments and the organ fall into patterns of interaction in which a new breathing instrument emerges." Three, which follows the 20-minute title work, deploys the same principles of harmonic relativity. In removing the organ from the instrumentation and switching to a different meter, Three acts as an intimate counterpoint to the ritual drone cycles of the title piece. For Organ And Brass was recorded in Tangermünde, Germany in September 2016. The performers were Johan Graden (organ), Elena Kakaliagou (horn), Hilary Jeffery (trombone), and Robin Hayward (tuba). Ellen Arkbro's work has been performed in Brooklyn, Stockholm, Norberg, Bologna, Gothenburg, Berlin, Birmingham, and Malmö, and on Swedish National Radio.

TANAKA, FUMIYA Beautiful Days 2010-2015 CD
All tracks are from Fumiya Tanaka's archive (2010-2015), produced since he moved his base to Berlin. The idea of the DJ mixing with only his own tracks has been gestating for some time and with his trials during his DJ dates in Europe, South America, and Japan, the selection of the tracks and sequence has been made. The thought process he used to mix his own materials is similar to how he prepares for his own live set. The recordings here were recorded at his home in Berlin. All tracks have been released previously over three 12" vinyl (SND 006EP/007EP/008EP, 2017), except "Uneasy Days".

REICH, STEVE Drumming 2CD
"Steve Reich's Drumming is regarded as one of the most important musical works of the last century. Distilled through his studies of African percussion in Ghana during 1970 and Balinese gamelan music, Reich revolutionized our understanding of polyrhythms, sculpting a new sonic territory to illuminate the radical potential of Minimalism. Divided into four sections, performed without pause, Drumming is written for eight small tuned drums, three marimbas, three glockenspiels, piccolo and voice. The singers recite melodic patterns that mimic the sounds of the instruments, gradually rising to the surface and then fading out. The overall effect can be transfixing -- pulling listeners into the rhythm and possessing a raw immediacy, directness and energy. The premier performances of Drumming took place in December 1971 in New York City -- first at The Museum of Modern Art, then at Brooklyn Academy of Music and finally at Town Hall where this recording was made -- and featured the composer along with a cast of longtime collaborators including Art Murphy, Steve Chambers, Russ Hartenberger, James Preiss, Jon Gibson, Joan La Barbara, Judy Sherman, Jay Clayton, Ben Harms, Gary Burke, Frank Maefsky and James Ogden. Originally released in 1972 by gallerist John Gibson in a small private edition, Drumming represents the culmination of Reich's investigation into rhythmic phase relationships and its early realization captures a remarkably organic feel, especially compared to the more widely known version on Deutsche Grammophon from 1974. This first-time vinyl reissue and first-time CD release has been carefully remastered from the original master tapes."

5IVE + SAMO DJ Drunkenstein 12"
Repressed. "Samo DJ skates back to the fold with a dope three tracker produced in tandem with 5ive. On 'Drunkenstein' they call on the help of fellow Born Free producer Powder for a micro dub house number that sounds like a delicious Rhythm & Sound plate pitched up and played at 45 rpm. On the flip, 'Ethno Room' provides a more inward looking dub mixe before 'End Game' goes down a more disco-fixed tip for the ride home." --Bleep

NIGHTINGALES/VIC GODARD, THE Commercial Suicide Man/Ace Of Hearts/Underdog 7"
In 2011, Stewart Lee curated a series of concerts and included The Nightingales. Consequently, Robert Lloyd invited Vic Godard and The Subway Sect to be special guests on the show. Following this decades-overdue reunion, Vic was inspired to write a duet for Rob to perform with him. For a variety of reasons this project was long-delayed, but finally, "Commercial Suicide Man" sees the light of day. Edition of 500.

VAN HOEN, MARK Invisible Threads CD
Mark Van Hoen on Invisible Threads: "In mid-2016 I did a brief tour of the west coast with Philip Jeck, Simon Scott, Daniel Mensche, Lee Bannon, Kara-Lis Coverdale, Pye Corner Audio, and Marcus Fischer. The music of all these great artists and the experience of playing these shows with them all informed what would become Invisible Threads which was primarily composed and recorded in the latter half of 2016. I had not played live at dates in such a dense cluster for many years, and the exposure to so much great music and the artists was inspiring. Other Touch artists were also an influence here -- Claire M Singer, Jana Winderen, and as ever Chris Watson (who has been an enduring influence from the moment I first heard Cabaret Voltaire in 1979), along with my project drøne with Mike Harding, the collaborative aspect of drøne brought up a few new paths in itself. During the time I was recording the album I was editing audio and sound design for films -- this too went some way to defining the structure and sound of Invisible Threads. At the time of recording several of the titles on the album, I had re-read The Conversation of Eiros and Charmion (1839), a short story by Edgar Allen Poe, and in some ways this record is a soundtrack to that. The title Invisible Threads refers to the intangible connection between all of the musical and personal influences that brought this record into being." Instrumentation/sound sources: Modular synthesizer notably using modules manufactured by Make Noise, The Harvestman & Mutable Audio Software -- Ableton Live, Pro Tools and many plugins -- heavily used were Max, Soundhack, and Native Instruments' Reaktor & Kontakt Sound libraries from Spitfire Audio; Fender Rhodes piano, Fender Jaguar guitar; Farfisa Organ, Vox continental; Notably no analogue synthesizers were used on this album - probably the first time I've made a record without them since Aurobindo: Involution in 1994. A few field recordings made on my very modest Zoom H4n recorder (mainly domestic sounds) made it onto the record Some 'found' sources also are present, mainly from vinyl records and YouTube." CORTEX Troupeau Bleu CD
Trad Vibe Records present a reissue of Cortex's Troupeau Bleu, originally released in 1975. Troupeau Bleu is the first and most famous album recorded by French jazz-funk legends Cortex, and it has been an obscure favorite of funky collectors for years. In 1974, Mion, Alain Gandolfi, and Jeff Huttner formed this mythical band, who then recorded several LPs, including this one. Recorded in two days in July 1975, it is a real musical UFO, an unclassifiable record, a mixing of a thousand flavors. The result is a stunning electric groove with a feeling that's really fresh, nice, warm, and funky in all the right parts. Sampled by the world's best producers like Rick Ross, Madlib, DJ Day, DJ Cam, and more.

BASCHET & MICHEL DENEUVE, BERNARD 4 Espaces Sonores 2LP
Transversales Disques present a reissue of Bernard Baschet and Michel Deneuve's 4 Espaces Sonores, originally released in 1982. Rare 1979 recording of Bernard Baschet performing on his Sound Sculptures. The Baschet brothers are known worldwide as creators of Sound Sculptures, fantastic shapes of molded metal and glass, which combine the visual arts with music. François Baschet had always been fascinated by acoustics, by the relationships between the shape and material of an instrument and the beauty of its sound. Bernard Baschet was passionately interested in contemporary music and firmly believed that such instruments were the proper tools for modern music, for they offered, to the artist and performer, a personal means of expression denied by electronic devices. Together the brothers began to design and produce Sound Sculptures, which could also be regarded as musical instruments. Circa 1965, Bernard worked alongside Pierre Schaeffer as a member of the GRM (Musical Research Group) on the elaboration of what was to become Schaeffer's Traité des objets musicaux ("Treatise on Musical Objects"). The Baschet brothers also created structures and instruments of all sizes, including bell towers, windmills, and fountains, using the natural elements of wind and water to make music. Bernard Baschet was especially proud of his pedagogical work amongst deprived and handicapped children, with the instrumentaium made up of fourteen pieces. Double-LP comes in gatefold sleeve.

VITAL IDLES Left Hand LP
Playing their first shows in Glasgow in 2015 during a summer that never threatened to show up, Vital Idles' origins are closely tied with a tireless underground culture, a culture that informs the band's refusal to take it easy. Matthew Walkerdine, Nick Lynch, and Andy Monaghan are responsible for Glasgow DIY publishing institution Good Press while guitarist Ruari MacLean's pedigree stretches back to breakneck-indie-pop group Golden Grrrls and the Rose McDowall band. Following two self-released demos (2015) and a sold-out debut 7" (2016), Vital Idles arrive on Upset The Rhythm with Left Hand, a bare manifesto layered with meaning and non-meaning. With their debut album Vital Idles have stripped away all extraneous ornamentation to sculpt an incredibly life-like, vibrant pop music completely détourned and re-thought. For a conglomerate of art outsiders and aesthetes, Vital Idles are primitive, whimsically brutal. Sculpting a skeleton from a body already lean, there's a thrilling minimalism that runs through every beat and strum, a sparseness that feeds Jessica Higgins's surreal, oblique vocal delivery all the nourishment it needs. Following practice room and bigger-budget recordings with Glasgow engineer Monaghan, Vital Idles took complete control of their debut album, with Edwin Stevens (aka, Irma Vep) providing an outside perspective on the hermetically sealed group's music. Engineered by Stevens and MacLean, Left Hand crackles with a raw, punk approach to writing warped pop songs that don't just talk of disorder but often actively demonstrate it. Higgins manages to create dialogues that she narrates both parts of, dada-ist songs that seem obfuscated by layers of meaning that, when taken on their own terms as evocative mini-worlds, reveal themselves to be pieces that have an internal melancholy and logic. Like Gertrude Stein growing up on Dunedin pop groups, peel away the deliberate awkwardness and Left Hand reveals itself to be a book of complex, literary short stories at pleasing odds with the wired, no-frills melodic thud MacLean, Lynch, and Walkerdine serve. At times a perilous journey into the unknown and at others an immensely enjoyable foray into form deconstruction, lyricist Higgins repeatedly builds narratives out of mis-hearings, peons to doing things wrong, sideways-glances at conventional narrative. The delivery tightrope-walks between deadpan epithets and a Smiths-ian pop singing which gives many of the lyrics bite, pathos, and a surprising amount of surrealistic positivity. 180 gram vinyl; Includes poster and download code. Edition of 500.
