FENSTER The Room LP
LP version. Includes download code. The Room, Fenster's fourth album and their first release on Altin Village & Mine, marks the beginning of a new chapter for the band. After releasing three albums, a feature length film, and touring extensively throughout Europe and North America since 2012, The Room serves as an entry point into their sonic evolution. The essential characteristic of the band is transformation - within and between genres, albums, and songs. Their sound is a window framing psychedelic, groovy, hypnogogic, playful pop. Fenster is Elias Hock, Jonathan Jarzyna, Lucas Ufo, and JJ Weihl. Their mission in creating this album was to compose and arrange every song together in a room. It is an experiment in collective creativity that pushed all of them to transcend their individuality and create something together which is greater than the sum of its parts. The songs were tracked live in a house where the band ate, slept, and played together. They were intent on finding and locking into a human groove, one open to imperfection, while still maintaining tightness among them. They wanted to make the songs feel alive, as if the listener were present in the room with them. The album's title track "The Room" opens the record like a rollercoaster ride. There is a tension in the first bars that ties us to earth, a minimal riff that guides us to the first chorus where we feel we are slowly lifting into the air. By the time we reach the second chorus, it has exploded into a space far away from the planet's gravitational pull. The band's use of juxtaposition is not just a way of channeling a vast library of musical genres and concepts, but also a means of expression. Combining tender pop melodies with kraut-beats, disco grooves and psychedelia frees the band from any one sound and creates a genre all its own. This playfulness is especially vibrant in songs like "Rhythm A" and "Haha Lol", which deconstruct and fuse together disparate moments of explosive rock, tender harmonies, percussion made of splashing water, voices from a radio, and electric piano. Thus, the whole process of making a record is about capturing a moment in time. This is the record they made at this point in time, all together, in a room.

DAVACHI, SARAH Gave In Rest CD
"Sarah Davachi has quickly risen in prominence since her first release five years ago, and Gave In Rest represents her highest artistic achievement. By infusing her compositional style within a predilection for medieval and Renaissance music, Davachi unearths a new realm of musical reverence, creating works both contemplative and beatific, eerie yet essentially human. Gave In Rest is a modern reading of early music, reforming sacred and secular sentiments to fit her purview and provide an exciting new way to hear the sounds that exist around us. Between January and September of 2017, Sarah Davachi lived in flux; storing her belongings in Vancouver, she spent the summer in Europe, occasionally performing in churches and lapidariums and seeking respite from her transitional state while surrounded by such storied history. This latest album echoes that emotional state of solitude and ephemerality, reaching towards familiar musical landscapes but from oblique perspectives. 'I named each track after a particular time of day as a way of expressing my experiencing different moments of quietude, how morning and night are both independent and interconnected entities in this regard,' she says. Her titles evoke canonical phrases referring to morning or evening prayers, as well as Latin and German phrasings for metaphors about the time of day. 'From my perspective, there is a lot of loneliness on this record, and I think it is as much about beginnings as endings,' she continues. 'In a way, it's about the prospect of the unknown as it manifests alongside a very inward form of grieving - really the essence of what constitutes a period of transition.' Davachi has mined a bottomless landscape where listeners can witness music's participation in their solitudes. Gave In Rest lends a voice to her personal exploration with a firm, intuitive stance."

VARIOUS ARTISTS bblisss 2LP
Cultishly adored ambient compilation bblisss finally lands on vinyl, replete with the first Huerco S outing under his Pendant alias, plus material from West Mineral regulars uon, Ulla Straus, and Exael. Pulled together and first issued on cassette by Ryan Fall (uon, Caveman LSD) aka DJ Paradise in 2016, bblisss has since become one of the most sought-after surveys of contemporary ambient music in circulation. Upon its initial release, bblisss introduced many of its artists and aliases for the first time, perhaps most notably Huerco S trading under the Pendant sigil, and also Ryan Fall's emergence as DJ Paradise, which ushered in a gauzier take on the sublime dub abstraction found in his subsequent uon productions. As DJ Paradise, Fall offers two of the set's sweetest highlights with 12 minutes of coagulating ambient clag in "Ssumo", and what sounds like a Balearic groove heard from under those greasy puddles on the rocks outside Cafe Del Mar in "Mbizi (R)", while Huerco S a.k.a. Pendant rolls that vibe out to sea in the gently mesmerizing slosh of "Des Vieux Temples". Along with the shimmering debut entry of Ulla Anona, who would later team with Pontiac Streator for Chat (OUEST 098LP, 2018) on West Mineral, a hyaline vignette from Billington & Trampish, and the slowly strung out, systolic throb of "Procel" by uon collaborator Naemi, aka Exael, the sublime potential of bblisss is pretty much guaranteed. Also features: Enamel.

LACOUR, LENNIE Rock 'n' Roll Romance/Rockin' Rosalie 7"
"Carefully transferred from cardboard. Mastering was a challenge! Compared to the raw material, the result sounds surprisingly good. Only one '50s rocker made his debut single as a tie-in with Orange Crush soda pop. Lennie LaCour's one-sided cardboard seven-inch 78 rpm pressing of 'Rock-N-Roll Romance' came attached to six-packs of the carbonated beverage in 1956, causing quite a sensation around Chicago and surrounding regions. LaCour waxed another jackhammer blazer, 'Rockin' Rosalie', as a separate platter on Chicago's Academy imprint. The super-rare original 'Rock-N-Roll Romance' from that long-ago soda pop freebie 78 graces one side of this delightful single, backed with Lennie's Academy release 'Rockin' Rosalie' -- rendering it a virtual greatest hits 45. So pop open a cold Orange Crush and prepare to hit the dance floor -- Lennie LaCour's rocking the house! Born outside of Natchitoches, Louisiana and largely of French Creole descent, LaCour developed into a multi-faceted entity: singer, songwriter, and eventually producer and label owner. Lennie migrated up to Chicago and sang with Al Peterson's orchestra before winning a contest to sing a rock and roll jingle for Orange Crush, and he was off and running. After his Academy stint was over, LaCour was advised by Leonard Chess to launch his own label, so he formed the Lucky Four logo, issuing No Privacy under his own name and then as The Big Rocker in 1961. Relocating to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Lennie established another imprint, Magic Touch, that released seminal soul singles by Harvey Scales & The 7 Sounds led by their killer '67 two-sider 'Get Down' b/w 'Love Itis'. The maverick producer continued to record right into the 21st Century."

LIVELY SET/THREE DUDES, THE Blues Get Off My Shoulder/I'm Begging You 7"
"Big Crown Records is proud to present this killer reissue split 7" of two tunes that are equally as rare as they are great. An absolute must have for the funk and soul collectors that is sure to burn up the dance floor. Side A is The Lively Set's cover of 'Blue's Get Off Of My Shoulder' which was recorded in San Antonio, Texas in 1967 and originally released on Satin Records. It is rumored that only 10 copies have ever been found of the original, and with it changing hands in the neighborhood of $5,000, it's a pleasure to get this side into collections and ears. The backing band for this tune is none other than Mickey & The Fabulous Five, who later went on to be Mickey & The Soul Generation. With pleading vocals by frontman Buddy Washington and a heavy duty groove peppered with blaring horns and rhythm guitar this is a lo-fi bomb of a record. Side B, also by way of San Antonio, recorded in '67, and released at the time on Satin Records, is The Three Dudes 'I'm Begging You'."

SONICS/SCAM, THE Find Myself Another Girl/Spooky 7"
"The A Side is a killer and well sought after reissue of The Sonics 'Find Myself Another Girl.' A tune that lands in one of our favorite sub genres - happy break up songs. The Sonics rip into it with a dance floor friendly drum beat covered in uplifting horn arrangements, singing the tune of someone who is relieved to be out of a relationship gone sour. A proper dance floor burner sure to be in all the soul DJ boxes. The B Side is a never before released version of the classic and often covered 'Spooky.' Taken from the original master tapes and edited down to fit a 45, this is the first time this tune is seeing the light of day. Texas outfit S.C.A.M. takes the tune on a proper journey, easing into it on this 45 edit and finding their way through horn crescendos and dropping down to drums bass and rhythm guitar. An easy favorite version of the hit tune that collectors will love to get their hands on."

LUCIER, ALVIN Illuminated By The Moon 4LP BOX/CD/Book
Black Truffle together with Bernhard Rietbrock and ZHDK present Illuminated By the Moon, a stunning box set celebrating Alvin Lucier's 85th birthday celebrations which took place in Zurich, 2013. Alvin Lucier is one of most important figures in more than a half century of avant-garde and experimental sound practice; he has no equivalent. He is among America's most important composers, a towering pillar of intellect, creativity, and beauty realized through sound. His singular body of work is focused around acoustic phenomena and auditory perception includes, among others, the groundbreaking Bird And Person Dyning, 1980's Music On a Long Thin Wire (LCD 1011CD), and 1981's I Am Sitting In a Room (LCD 1013CD), each quietly shifting the understanding of what music could be with deceptively discrete gestures, laying their mark on history and the expectations of nearly everything to come, while radically expanding the field. It is such a life, defined by such striking accomplishment, which Illuminated By the Moon, celebrates across four LPs, a CD, and book. Recorded in October of 2016 at the Alvin Lucier 85th Birthday Festival at the Zurich University of the Arts, the box gathers a remarkable range of performances of works from Lucier's life in music, from the iconic to the lesser known. It begins with wonderful stagings of "I Am Sitting In a Room" and "Music for Solo Performer" performed by the composer, before presenting the work "Charles Curtis" performed by the cellist for whom it was composed, and "Double Rainbow", a recent work, performed by the incredible Joan La Barbara. Over the course of the set's many discs, one encounters a range of works performed by Oren Ambarchi, Stephen O'Malley, Charles Curtis, and Gary Schmalzl, with further contributions by many others involved in Lucier's life and work. The collection, by offering an expanse of material otherwise unavailable in the composer's discography, opens a rare window into the breadth and range of territory which he has approached, as well as into the unique humor which has quietly bubbled through his entire career. It is a singular recording event, the likes of which are unlikely to be repeated. A worthy tribute to one of the last century's most important composers. Mastered and cut by Helmut Erler at Dubplates & Mastering, Berlin. 180 gram vinyl. Includes CD and 12x12", 120-page book with unseen images and various essays; Includes download code; Edition of 500.

KAMMERFLIMMER KOLLEKTIEF There Are Actions Which We Have Neglected And Which Never Cease To Call Us LP+CD
LP version. Includes CD. After twenty years of Kammerflimmer Kollektief, with ten albums thus far, the Karlsruhe combo here guide their listeners through seven pieces in which a listening space emerges at the intersection of improvisation and composition, a space where certitude slips out of reach, oscillating furiously between cut-up and palimpsest before it disappears altogether. There Are Actions Which We Have Neglected And Which Never Cease To Call Us is one for the fearless, wordlessly conjuring up enchanted places in the richest of tones, simultaneously confronting its listeners with magic which captivates, and the realization that they may never be released from its spell. Mirror images come into view, images of ourselves driven away, tormented by feelings of guilt, frozen in powerlessness, even when you believe you are still moving. The wetlands of the Upper Rhine plain, Cuernavaca in the Mexican highlands, a southern California stretch of Pacific coast, the Baltic Coast in Mecklenburg; haunted places, scenes of melancholy, repeatedly searching for acts of liberation. This may not be the record to set you free, but it offers a soundtrack for a melancholic state. One thing is clear when it comes to the Kammerflimmer Kollektief: regardless of any interpretive traps snapping shut, here is something which cannot be voiced; whichever labels are stuck on the Karlsruhe collective, they all feel patently unsatisfactory. Like all music, their music can neither be narrowed down to concepts nor fixed semantically. It cannot be organized as language, yet it is no more pre-conceptual in its existence. These carefully unconsidered atheist jam supplications lead you into the darkest corners of your souls, out of the night and into the night. The bass of Johannes Frisch creaks and hums, evolving into barely discernible undergrowth with a life of its own, yet becoming the foundation of everything, a basso continuo, constantly leading into nothingness. Heike Aumüller's harmonium is elementally a wind which has much to tell us about life, but even more about what tortures us, leaves you restless, while Thomas Weber's whirring guitars and gadgets drag us into a wondrously reverberating space of special effects. Amidst all the excitement which awaits you on this short journey, it is worth remembering that as the shaman hangs out his magic roots to dry in the morning as preparation for the ritual ecstasy of the evening, so the Kollektief follow an everyday principle in their own ritual.

STOCKHAUSEN, KARLHEINZ Originale LP
A documentation of a music happening recorded at Judson Hall, NYC. Sept 8-9, 11-13, 1964 with a stellar line-up that includes James Tenney on piano, David Behrman, Max Neuhaus, Alvin Lucier, Allan Kaprow, Nam June Paik, Allen Ginsberg, and Jackson Mac Low. The idea, Allan Kaprow director explained, is "a collage of music and action". The music was electronic, but the action was clearly electrifying as Karlheinz Stockhausen's Originale was presented as the top event od Manhattan's Second Annual Avant-Garde Festival. from the program original notes: the artist got on a ladder and, from a height, dropped eggs, paprika and stuff on a sheet of plastic, making a wonderful action painting. In the background was the electronic music. Of course there was Allen Ginsberg, who recited a poem, using a few phrases that caused nervous giggles from some young ladies in the audience. Allen Ginsberg was dressed in his usual formal dress for concert work: blue jeans, red shirt open at the neck, a jacket of sorts, even shoes. The evening was a triumph of organization. lest you think that the whole is not greater than the parts, consider how the following materials were so cannily used: live musicians (saxophone and percussion, the latter ending up undressed save for red leotards), a walkie?talkie, a film sequence, a piano decorated with flowers, and stuff in its innards, a clothes-rack, pillows, hi?fi equipment, a newspaper boy, kids erecting constructions from wooden blocks, a big clock, newspaper obits, a scaffolding, the audience itself, apples thrown around, a monologue in Greek, one from Shakespeare, insane laughter. Silk screened cover art, with xerox insert reproducing Time Magazine review of the performance -- published 9/18/64. Includes photo of Charlotte Moorman stripping.

DAVIS, MILES The Original Quintet (First Recording) LP
Down At Dawn present a reissue of Miles Davis's The Original Quintet (First Recording) , originally released on Prestige in 1963. In 1955, Davis played a beautifully received set at the Newport Jazz Festival and was offered a contract with Columbia Records if he could get a steady group together. In order to record for Columbia, Davis would first have to settle an obligation to Prestige and so he put together the now legendary quintet with John Coltrane, Red Garland, Paul Chambers, and Philly Joe Jones. It was under these conditions, in a desire to churn out as many records as possible to change labels, that Davis recorded some of the most celebrated music of his entire career. This group, in the span of several months released a half-dozen LPs including this one and the great Cookin' (1957), Workin' (1959), and more. This title, originally recorded in 1955 features a great Duke Ellington piece, "Just Squeeze Me", the brilliant Davis original "The Theme", and several other great tunes, but most importantly it is the introduction to a group that features two towering giants of jazz together on some of the fieriest playing of either's career. PATTERSON, BEN The Lost Tape & The Three Required Musics LP
"Radiophonic minutes of the search for a probably lost tape piece, and a reconstruction thereof with real instruments." Produced by Hessischer Rundfunk (Hessian Broadcasting Corporation), Germany, in 2015. When future Fluxus artist Ben Patterson (1934-2016) traveled to Germany in 1960 in order to study with Karlheinz Stockhausen, he brought along a tape piece that he had produced in Hugh Le Caine's electronic studio in Canada and that he wanted to show to Stockhausen. They met briefly in the context of the World Music Days of the International Society for Contemporary Music (ISCM) in Cologne, but Patterson immediately sensed that their aesthetic ambitions and viewpoints differed too much, and in the end, he didn't even present him his piece. Instead, his attention was drawn to the Contre Festival at Mary Bauermeister's studio, a counter event to the ISCM festival presenting works by George Brecht, La Monte Young, John Cage, amongst others. Virtually overnight, Patterson's aesthetic thinking changed radically, and the cornerstone was laid for his coming role within the Fluxus movement. In 2013, Stefan Fricke, editor for new music at Hessischer Rundfunk, approached Patterson about a broadcast of that old tape piece. Patterson didn't know its whereabouts, so Fricke and him together with Cologne-based composer hans w. koch set out for a journey through Patterson's large collection of tapes, some labeled, some unlabeled, sometimes the labels not matching the contents. The journey was recorded with Patterson inserting and ejecting various cassettes, always commenting on what was being heard. In the end, the electronic piece couldn't be found, so it was decided to re-record it using various toys, instruments, and small devices. For the new recording, Patterson brought a score titled "The Three Required Musics" which he considered to be related to the tape piece and which required preparatory work in the form of cutting out colored pieces of paper and pasting them into a time grid. This LP contains the recording of the search on side A and the new recording of the score on side B. It is presented in a full-color sleeve showing a detail of hans w. koch's paper time grid, with liner notes by Stefan Fricke and hans w. koch, and two inserts: the first containing the original score "The Three Required Musics" with new notes by Ben Patterson, the other reproducing koch's complete paper score in A2 format. Edition of 300.

KOCH, HANS W. The O. Theorem LP
hans w. koch (b. 1962) is a Cologne-based composer, performer, and sound artist. His work encompasses pieces for chamber and large orchestra, experimental scores for instruments, computers and everyday objects, sound installations, electronic music, etc. He summarizes his art as being about sculpting thoughts in diverse material and prefers conceptual approaches: "more thought, less material". koch studied composition with Johannes Fritsch and currently is professor for sound at the Academy of Media Arts Cologne. Since the 1980s, koch has been concerning himself with the concept of "total harmony" (harmonie totale) introduced by Russian composer Nikolai Obouhow (1892-1954) where all twelve tones of the Western tonal system -- in different octave ranges -- are stacked into chord complexes, thus articulating the idea of a vertical twelve-tone music, as opposed to the horizontal twelve-tone music after Schönberg. Less than the mystical connotations expressed by Obouhow, koch is interested in the conceptual potential of this approach: a self-contained harmonic system in which every chord is an inversion of every other. koch has made several works relating to total harmony and calls this work group "the O. theorem". This LP presents two pieces within this group: "stele fuer n.o." for large orchestra (2010) was premiered at the festival MaerzMusik in Berlin in 2010 with the Konzerthausorchester Berlin. "clock of fifths [totensonntag]" (2017) is an electronic piece where a field recording of church bells is filtered through a smartphone app developed by koch: The microphone signal is divided into twelve tone pitches that are heard in accordance with a timer that moves through the circle of fifths shown on the smartphone display. Full-color sleeve; includes printed inner sleeve with liner notes by Volker Straebel and hans w. koch. Edition of 300.

HENRY, PIERRE Orphee Ballet LP
Fantôme Phonographique present a reissue of Pierre Henry's Orphée Ballet, originally released in 1964. Scored for Maurice Béjart's choreography to the Orphée Ballet, based on the Greek god, Orpheus, this is one of Pierre Henry's finest works of musique concrète, the genre in which Henry was an early innovator and to which he devoted his career. After years working for the French national radio (RTF) and honing his studio chops on radio spots and editing/composition, Henry formed his own studio in 1958 and began working on modern dance and ballet and soundtrack work. Incorporating percussion, industrial soundscapes, nature sounds, spoken French narrative, and synthesized tones, Orphée Ballet is a beautiful piece that while less known than what is perhaps his most famous work, also for Béjart's ballet production, 1967's Les Jerks Électroniques De La Messe Pour Le Temps Présent Et Musiques Concrètes Pour Maurice Béjart, is equally compelling and groundbreaking. Following his passing in 2017 at age 89, Henry's work has found renewed interest, and this is a welcome reissue of one of his rarest and finest works. Truly brilliant. Comes in a heavy sleeve with a hand-numbered sticker.

GURDJIEFF, G.I. Improvisations LP
Fantôme Phonographique present a reissue of G.I. Gurdjieff's Improvisations. G.I. Gurdjieff was an Armenian and Greek philosopher, spiritual teacher, and musician, whose teachings of The Fourth Way influenced thousands worldwide and created communities that still exist to this day. His goal was to teach humans to reach a higher consciousness out of the "waking sleep" he considered most to be living in. Music was an important part of his teachings and these brilliant harmonium improvisations were recorded in 1949 in Paris, just a short time before his death. Droning and ethereal, these beautiful pieces mark a pinnacle in the work of a legend of human spirituality. Comes in a heavy sleeve with a hand-numbered sticker.

EIMERT, HERBERT Epitaph Fur Aikichi Kuboyama / Sechs Studien LP
Fantôme Phonographique present a reissue of Herbert Eimert's Epitaph Für Aikichi Kuboyama / Sechs Studien, originally released in 1966. Herbert Eimert was a German music renaissance man, with his expertise ranging from theory, to composition, editing, radio production, and criticism. He wrote numerous books on music theory, worked for years at the British occupational forces run Nordwestdeutscher Rundfunk. It was there in 1951 that he established a studio for electronic music that he ran until 1961, which hosted recordings from Stockhausen, Xenakis, and Cardew, among others. This brilliant work begins on Side A with "Epitaph Für Aikichi Kuboyama", a brilliant piece of voice and electronics dedicated to a Japanese fishing boat radioman, who lost his life from complications related to radiation poisoning in 1954, after the ship he worked on was contaminated from fallout after the USA's nuclear testing at Bikini Atoll. In addition to being a brilliant piece of electronic musique concrete, it is a damning indictment of nuclear warfare, as prescient now as it was during The Cold War. Side B is made up of six studies in electronic music, showcasing Eimert's talents which are as impressive as his more famous contemporaries. Essential early electronic music. Comes in a heavy sleeve with a hand-numbered sticker.

Setaoc Mass's fourth record for Figure displays a level of maturity an artist this young rarely inhabits. Two tracks feature his ability to craft finely layered IDM, showing another perspective of the ideas behind the cavernous techno taking up the rest of this EP. Nestled between the electronica-pieces is "Torque", heavy yet undeniably beautiful with its big breaks towards ascension. "Always Falling, Never Declining" is a slowly swelling beast with many heads. Spiraling inwards, "Search Lights" is that key track to drop in the murkiest, darkest hour of the night.

HEPTONES, THE Book Of Rules LP
"Leroy Sibbles, Earl Morgan and Barry Llewellyn first banded together in Kingston in 1965 as The Hep Ones, but quickly changed it up to the Heptones when Morgan randomly spotted a discarded bottle of Heptones Tonic. We're not sure what was in that tonic, but it sure made for some smooth vocals. By 1967 the group was recording for Coxsone Dodd's famed Studio One moving into the organization just as the Wailers were moving on. Though one may argue which group had sweeter harmonies, there's no doubt that The Heptones, unlike many others at the time, were not followers of the Wailers vocal stylings but rather contemporaries. After parting ways with Sir Coxone, post a string of international hits and renown, the group released abundant material through a string of labels (including their own) ahead of being catapulted it international prominence due to a deal with Island Records in the late 70s. Book Of Rules being one of those recordings. In 1973 the group entered Harry J's studio in Kingston, with the record being issued on Harry's Jaywax imprint soon after the last note of the session tapered off. The effort features one of the biggest Heptone's hits in the title track 'Book Of Rules,' one of the very few Heptones songs where Leroy Sibbles does not handle the lead vocals, instead the songs co-writer Barry Llewelyn sang lead. Once again available as first issued in Jamaica in 1973, this is a landmark recording that's not to be overlooked."

AMINI, SIAVASH Foras LP
After 2017's Tar', Foras is Iranian sound artist Siavash Amini's second album for the Hallow Ground and his sixth solo album in only six years. The four tracks see him returning to his singular approach that blends harsh electronic noise with lush granular synthesis and classical compositional techniques. Over the course of roughly 38 minutes, the album navigates between different and at times seemingly contradictory moods, thus mirroring its underlying concept. Foras explores how individual sorrow relates to and is triggered by space. Similar to what the late theorist Mark Fisher has dubbed the "eerie," the LP focuses on how landscapes and buildings connect to and transform the inside world and thus the psychological experience. May it be by passing through a space haunted by collective memories of loss or tragedy, or by means of interpersonal dialogue, or even a memory of such events in each individual's mind elaborates Amini on the starting points from which Foras dives further and further into the darkness. It is no surprise then that the incredibly lush soundscapes of'Foras evoke distance as much as depth.

ACT! Universalist LP
Universalist is the first album by ACT! Baroque, kaleidoscope electronics; material sound for a disembodied world. The energy is optimistic and positive -- even naive -- a statement of unity in the age of psychic dislocation. Ten tracks of phosphorus MIDI and brittle digital textures feel indebted in spirit to the masters of psychic jazz as much as the physical euphoria of the club. Above all, this album belongs to the catalog of Halocline Trance, yet subtle references connect it to a larger lineage of free sound. The empty, divine heaviness of songs like "Ecstatica / On Patrol" invokes Yusef Lateef's Little Symphony (1987), while the computerized spontaneity of "Lava Valley" feels somehow connected to Yasuaki Shimizu's Music For Commercials (1987). Non-musical sounds and evocative melodies sit side-by-side -- new psychedelia for love and life in the digital jet stream. ACT! is a project from Toronto-based musician David Psutka. Building on a diverse body of releases as Egyptrixx, Ceramic TL, Anamai, and various other collaborations, ACT! denotes a new chapter of creative output from Psutka and the Halocline Trance label. Universalist follows a prolific string of releases in 2017 with Anamai's What Mountain; Ceramic TL + Ipek Gorgun's Perfect Lung; and Egyptrixx's Pure, Beyond Reproach, and synthesizes recurring themes of materiality and the unifying potential of sound.

SLEAFORD MODS Austerity Dogs LP
Restocked; LP version. Sleaford Mods started out sometime during 2006 while Jason Williamson was living in Nottingham. Born out of part frustration and part accident, it quickly found its feet as an aggressive verbal onslaught on all that is contrived and connected to the day-to-day hammer of low paid employment and domestic situations arising from that trap. After a year of working ideas out in both the studio and in live performance around Nottingham, Williamson moved south and took the cause to London for a couple of years, before returning to Nottingham in 2009. Soon after that he met Andrew Fearn and the Sleaford Mods became a duo. Fearn's first work was on the production of Wank -- the Mods' fifth CD-R album. Soon after, he started stalking the studio and stage with Williamson. Just after the release of Wank, the duo were invited to play a three-day festival curated by Nottingham's Rammel Club. During that weekend they were introduced to the Harbinger Sound label. A meeting which -- a year later -- resulted in the release of Austerity Dogs. Numerous shows around the UK and Europe followed, including further festival appearances. Rave reviews of the album have appeared in magazines as diverse as The Wire and Uncut, along with interviews being published both on paper and on the internet, both here and abroad. With more international dates on the horizon including excursions to Poland and Sweden, the interest in the Mods continues to spread.

NOSEHOLES Danger Dance LP
Noseholes' debut LP Danger Dance takes the listener on a journey in a scruffy taxi unexpectedly cruising through dirty, muddy streets into a neighborhood where discotheques are sparsely improvised in shabby basements, sound tracking the journey with a disco-infused variety of post-punk and no wave. The album contains groove heavy hits such as "Styling", "Danger Dance", and "Lush Box" mixed with more experimental songs sung in alien tongues, a no wave grumble rap, and finally, a nerve-wrecking saxophone improvisation. All the tracks offer up a unique take on your grasp of dance music. "Noseholes are from Hamburg, but do sound straight from New York though" --Trust Mag. "The minimalism and musical approach of Noseholes reminds me of bands such as Bush Tetras, Contortions, Shopping and Nachthexen" --X-Mist Records.

FREEKS, THE Crazy World LP
LP version. Los Angeles band The Freeks know that as the Earth revolves the Sun and the universe infinitely expands, it must be shared with as many different kinds of life as there are stars, a bold statement coming from a bunch of Freeks. This is not a new concept, however; it is an ever-recurring one dating back to Ezekiel's biblical account, and even further back with evidence from ancient Egypt and Mayan times. After 4000 years, the theory continues strong as we enter 2018. The Freeks also enter 2018 with the completion of Crazy World, their fourth album and second for Italian-based Heavy Psych Sounds Records. Crazy World is a studio record with eight songs that take you on a psychedelic journey from hidden moonlit distilleries all the way up to the mother ship and back down to Mother Earth. It could have happened in 2700 B.C. and it's definitely happening again now as The Freeks continue to ferment their ethanol-infused fuzz rock, their songwriting reflecting heavier content and extra-added amounts of psychoactive chemicals from the minds of their listeners. Ruben Romano (founding member of Fu Manchu and Nebula) returns at the helm supported by Bob Lee on drums (Claw Hammer, Mike Watt), Esteban Chavez on keys, Jonathan Hall on guitar (Backbiter) and introducing the latest Freek on bass, Ray Piller (Biblical Proof of U.F.O.'s). Crazy World also features some amazing musical guests that add to the insanity and continue The Freeks' 'All Are Welcome' legacy. It has ripping guitar leads by Ray Hanson (Thee Hypnotics), added keys and synth from returning Freek alumni Glenn Slater (The Walkabouts and Wellwater Conspiracy), added bass lines by Crazy World producer Rainer Fraenkel (The Miracle Mongers) plus backing vocals by singer/model Sara Loera.

YAWNING MAN The Revolt Against Tired Noises LP
LP version. The aural experience of Yawning Man summarizes as an intense yet graceful kaleidoscope of polyphonic musical textures; dramatic and flowing, dark, intense and emotional. 2018 finds the band releasing their most musically exciting recording to date with their sixth full-length album, The Revolt Against Tired Noises on the Italian label, Heavy Psych Sounds. The songs on this release are an emotional and visceral expression of pure melodic darkness and beauty. The album was recorded at Gato Trail Studios in Joshua Tree, CA and produced and engineered by friend and long-time collaborator, Mathias Schneeberger (Mark Lanegan, Greg Dulli, SUNN O))), Earth, The Obsessed). The eight songs offered here are the results of a conscious focus on the poetry in melody, finding new sounds and melodic passages that conjure visuals and express emotion and movement. Six of the eight songs are in the instrumental tradition the band is mostly know for; however, two tracks feature the rare appearance of a vocalist (bassist Mario Lalli) alongside Gary Arce's dream-weaving guitar work. One of these tracks of notable mention is the song "Catamaran", a Yawning Man song made popular by the legendary influential desert rock band Kyuss on their 1995 album And the Circus Leaves Town. The song was never released by Yawning Man, however the Kyuss cover of the song proved to be a favorite among Kyuss fans, spreading the word about Yawning Man's unique music. The record was recorded and engineered by Yosef Sanborn who also owns and operates Massive FX pedals in Los Angeles. Multiple pedals designed by Yosef were used by Brant and Bubba for this record. Additional tracks were recorded by Bubba Dupree at Brant Bjork's home studio in Venice beach California. Brant Bjork and Bubba Dupree describe the sound of Mankind Woman as modern classic. It is evidently clear that both Brant and Bubba specialize in the craft of the sound and feel of the music spawned in the '60s and '70s and this record is undoubtedly a testament to this great era of song and sound, however the intention was not to try to recapture or mimic in retro terms these influences but to strive for a contemporary quality. Brant Bjork might have gone deeper in the lyrics than on any record before. Focusing on personal sensitivities, elite hypocrisies, racism, sexism, and the daily struggle to find peace, love, and understanding in today's American society. Once again, Brant Bjork makes here a record that reminds the listener that it was the ingredients of jazz, blues, and funk that makes rock music taste so good.

VA Convenanza 2018 LP
2017's edition of Convenanza set the ground for a collaboration between Hoga Nord Rekords and one of the most interesting festivals around. The 2018 contributors are: electro-oozing duo The Woodleigh Research Facility, consisting of Andrew Weatherall and Nina Walsh, as well as ethno-minimalists Komodo Kollektif from Glasgow. The more rock-oriented side of Convenanza 2018 contains Berlin-based Die Wilde Jagd, whose sound can be defined as some sort of post punk where strong chorus drenched basslines float upon a smooth electronic soundscape with both live drums and drum machines as the backbone to the beat. Wild Woman & The Savages could best be described as the result of an orgy between PIL and The Birthday Party. The Limiñanas, with special guest Anton Newcombe, contribute to the collection a garage psych rock track suited for long hot drives through the dessert. Weatherall's unfailing "fingerspitzengefühle" in picking artists for the festival gets repeated yet again and if you for some unexplainable reason fail to make it to Carcassonne this year, the magic from the old castle still can reach your senses with the help from this compilation.

"There is no elegant way to spit in your face." As the saying goes. Or doesn't. Doom, hardcore, post-rock, noise, metal. Songs about bodily fluids -- and that awkward loss -- sit neatly against the joys of ornithology, and the most earnest examples of love. And being fucking straight cool. This is a rare gem of a record from the fantastic soul band The Soul Kids, stemming from the Democratic Republic of Congo, which includes covers of James Brown & The Mighty Flames' hit singles "Licking Stick" (1968) and "Papa's Got A Brand New Bag" (1965), Wilson Pickett's "Hey Jude", and a French vocal version of Otis Redding's soul hit, "Respect". This amazing young band, which released only four 7" singles and one album, is a great example of the influence of soul music and French pop bridging to the new Afro soul scene that the musicians of Kinshasa were involved in during the time of post-independence. Ngoma was one of the first record labels intent on providing local artists' recordings from both sides of the Congo river to the people of the DRC and West Africa. Created in 1948 by a Greek man by the name of Nicolas Jeronimidis, the Ngoma label was active through 1968 and pressing in France until 1971, leaving a tremendous catalog, including this historical and essential soul masterpiece.

DEMAC & REAL LIES, TOM White Flowers 12"
First incursion of Tom Demac on Kompakt, White Flowers sees the British producer joining forces with London's Real Lies. The three cuts on White Flowers ooze a fine alloy of quick-consumed ecstasy, fresh heartbreak and shivery consolation. The lead-track essays forth into deep, string-laden minimal techno terrains as the languid voice of Kev Kharas adds another dimension to the instrumental picture. Pushing into a breaks-heavy, more openly club-ready direction, Demac's "Felix" further emphasizes the groove with a rousing blend of 303 bass and synth-y glitter, before the ambient version of "White Flowers" provides a plain melancholic note.

FIELD, THE Infinite Moment 2LP
Double LP version. Two years on from his last outing, The Follower (KOMP 130CD/KOM 350LP, 2016), Axel Willner puts on his Field suit again to present his sixth full-length effort for Kompakt, Infinite Moment. Infinite Moment sees him striding further across the deeper, richer rims of the hue cycle. In Willner's own words, "the threshold of creating something new had to be broken", as had been done with his past albums, including his acclaimed debut From Here We Go Sublime (KOMP 057CD/KOMRSD 002LP, 2007). For Willner, "stepping outside of the studio opened up fresh perspectives on the creation of new music"; it was the opening cut, "Made Of Steel, Made Of Stone", that got him into the flux of things, "making of the rest of the album easier as I went". Substituting the up-tempo vim of his previous pieces for a sense of mind-expanding horizontality, Infinite Moment is an album filled with hope and draped in a diffuse, appeasing light, easing the pain and troubles of the human soul through a lushly forested recital of shoegazing modular, complex textural interplays and solar, atmospheric fractals. "Made Of Steel, Made Of Stone" gets the ball rolling on a thumping down-tempo note, which as Willner explains, "gives me a lot of hope". "Hope is something I've been missing in the nowadays climate and this album is a relief to me, a type of comfort, like a moment that feels good and you don't want to end." "Divide Now" is a sonic mitosis, engaging the metamorphosis to come; like a larvae pupating and reemerging weeks later from under rough bark in the form of a butterfly - fluttering breaks shed their skin to make way for a more intimate and hypnotic second chapter. "Hear Your Voice" propels the lavish, pad-upholstered glamour of its melodic lines in a bolder syncopated re-visitation of 1980s-indebted pop harmonics, while "Something Left, Something Right, Something Wrong" returns to a flaring post-euphoric daze. A more arrhythmic affair, "Who Goes There" spins out into orbit wildly, fusing acid bass moves with a haunting motorik, playing with the listener's mind intensely before the ten-minute-long epic "Infinite Moment" ushers its listener into a highly immersive final ballet of buzzing chords, trampling drums and all-consuming drones. This album is a direct soul-to-soul transmission, aiming no further than at finding the right balance between contained emotion and an expressive eloquence.

Aimed at no less than unleashing havoc on the floor is the edit of 99Letters' frantic drum-roll-fest "Lazer Beam". Already quite a force to be reckoned with, Faki manages to beef-up the mix even more, adding rumbling bass-weight and injecting some extra steam to make it roll out until the end. On the flip side there's the hypnotic groove of Austen/Scott's "Space Taxi". Captivating and enveloping, this mix alters the original signature bass in order to shift gears into what feels like full forward.

DETTMANN, MARCEL Test-File 2x12"
Marcel Dettmann releases Test-File, his first full Ostgut Ton release since 2013's Dettmann II (OSTGUT 028CD/014LP). The 2x12" sees the renowned selector and long-time Berghain resident in explorative form, combining compact experimental techno vignettes with writhing, dubby, and distorted longform dancefloor portals -- as well as a stoned and unexpected turn into house territory. At 22 minutes over six tracks, Test-File is a series of sonic contrasts united by Dettmann's uncanny intuition for patiently shifting, improvisational dance music. Three-minute opener "Test-File" bangs in with rapid fire kicks and tape-delayed electric zaps, reversing midway into a kind of electronic palindrome. The momentum is sustained on standout single "Ascending", where an overdriven bass wave surges through a tunnel of industrial noise. The release then emerges into the arch, squishy house of "Autumn77", filled with sirens, pads and sampled vocals/laughter. The second vinyl returns initially to rhythmic experimentation with the three-minute "Torch" lurching forward rattling and machine-like, interspersed by passages of groan and hiss. "Error (1st Take)" bubbles along dub-wise, tripping atmospherically though a haze of out-of-synch synth bursts. Closer "Metalloid" wraps it all up with a hypnotic, rubber band acid line and smudged 808s clavs.

And right in the middle, catch a shout-out from WBAU, the call-sign of the defunct New York radio station that counted members of Public Enemy and hosts of Yo! MTV Raps amongst its staff. &ME In Your Eyes 12"
Emitting his first material for Pampa, it's &ME. "In Your Eyes" showcases a rather pensive mood. It's just a few bars for the compound of kickdrum, tuned hi-hat tambourine, and shimmering background noise until the first chords of an improvised piano-piece are tenderly laid upon the beat. In comparison, "As Above So Below" is adding a fair amount of emphasis. It unfolds in a dry and dense sounding beat-architecture that's suspense-packed with shaker sounds and sub textual field recordings. Most certainly, a slip-proof ground for this tune's centerpiece, a scale-riding synth bass sparking an almost anthemic trigger for floor-ecstasy.

WIRE Pink Flag LP
LP version. "Wire's first three albums need no introduction. They are the three classic albums on which Wire's reputation is based. Moreover, they are the recordings that minted the post-punk form. This was adopted by other bands, but Wire were there first. It has been a number of years since these albums were readily available. The aim with these new vinyl and CD releases is to approximate the original statements as closely as possible, but with remastered audio. The vinyl releases have the same covers and inners as the originals (minus the Harvest logo). The digipack CDs have identical track listings to their vinyl counterparts. These versions should be considered Wire's classic 1970s albums, pure and undiluted. Usually contextualized against a backdrop of two years of the growing cultural importance of punk rock--Wire's debut Pink Flag, released in December 1977 on EMI's progressive label Harvest was in fact was something 'other.' To the keen cultural commentator, the timing and label of its release will register two essential facts about it. Firstly, too late (a year after the Pistol's debut release) to be part of UK punk's first flush and secondly that the band were signaling something beyond punk by their choice of label. Further investigation would reveal twenty-one tracks, some of them clocking in at well under a minute and covering a range of tempi well beyond the buzzsaw rockabilly that had become, even by the second half of 1977, punk's staple."

KYO WITH JEURU All The Same Dream LP
Third album from KYO, the enigmatic product of Hannes Norrvide and Frederik Valentin's compact. For All The Same Dream they have collaborated with American vocalist Jeuru, a recent recruit into the city of Copenhagen. KYO's previous records are breathtaking instrumental works, and they have steadily earned the group praise on their own terms. Collaborating with Jeuru takes this exploration a step further and into territory uncharted in previous recordings. Jeuru's vocals stray from spoken word trysts to heartfelt cries and introspective sighs. The casually diaristic lyrics and the often conversational tone brings a very real immediacy into Norrvide and Valentin's world, gracefully illuminating its architecture and revealing the great forms all around. KYO's music always departed for freedom and arrived there promptly. Jeuru gives you a telescope, and with intimacy you explore. The fine blend of electronics and acoustic instruments is carefully balanced on All The Same Dream. Everything shimmers, turning you one way and then losing you the next, matching the vocals in a persistent sense of opportunity. Brilliantly pitched moments of abrasive electronics are a warm welcome, immersing you in a different time zone from that of the rhythmic pieces that lead you into a chilled metropolis. It feels like you've been walking these streets forever, from club to club, from scene to scene, but there's never enough time to dream between destinations.

DJ FIRMEZA Alma Do Meu Pai 12"
2015 release. Maybe it was the fact he used to be part of a dance crew with his younger brother, he can't really tell, but the raw percussive nature of his music reveals Firmeza has a finely tuned understanding of body movements. That became more and more obvious since he first learned the ways of FL Studio via DJ Nervoso and his other -- older -- brother. That was it for DJ Firmeza, then 11 years old, born in Portugal but of Angolan descent. This EP is dedicated to his recently departed father, a light only overshadowed by God -- it is not uncommon for Firmeza to shed some tears in those special moments during a performance when things seem too good to be true. Clocking in at over six minutes, title-track "Alma Do Meu Pai" is a game-changer, three-times longer than the average batida track, a deep running hypnotic percussion grid showcasing all the rhythmic flow Firmeza inherited and perfected from his admiration of classic DJ Nervoso beats; "Somos Melão Doce" introduces plucked synthetic strings that sound totally alien in this context but with a precise emotive agenda. It's no chance; "Os PDDG" namechecks Firmeza's ground-breaking crew he shared with Liofox (co-authoring this track), Dadifox, Maboku, and Lilocox (both now active as CDM). The tempo is comparatively relaxed, percussion drops are stars in their own right, lending an avant-garde edge to this most tribal dance; In "Start Go", assertive chants dance around each other, in and out of sync, securing a safe path for the heavy duty percussion workout; By the time we reach "Coelho 2025", it's more than evident we are locked in Firmeza's own intricate web of rhythm; forget notions of kuduro or Afro-house, this is really something else, a pulsating heart linked to stomping feet in a most elegant way; "Suposto" adds flute and clipped guitar as atmosphere enhancers, balancing the usual genius percussion work. Bouncy and intuitive.

DEREN, MAYA Divine Horsemen: Voodoo Gods of Haiti LP
"Maya Deren journeyed to Haiti to make a film of ritual dances, instead, she came to be accepted as a Voudoun initiate, whose devotees commune with the cosmic powers through invocation, offerings, song and dance of the Voudoun pantheon of deities, or Loa, whom are witnessed as being living gods and goddesses, actually taking possession of their devotees. Deren describes the relationship between magic, science and religion bringing a uniquely lyrical voice to her narrative. This paints a multi-textured, infinitely complex portrait of a spiritual tradition with roots stretching back to the very dawn of humanity. Joseph Campbell calls Divine Horsemen 'the most illuminating introduction that has yet been rendered to the whole marvel of the Haitian mysteries as 'facts of the mind.'' Included in this album are some of the first recordings ever made during religious ceremonies near Croix de Missions and Petionville featuring selections that serve as a soundtrack to the film she shot documenting Voodoo ceremonies and festivals conveying the incantatory power of the ritual drumming and singing. One can hear the sounds of nature while processions begin across the landscape further giving the effect of an audio memoir. For the first time in almost 40 years, this long out-of-print cult classic is now available in a limited edition featuring a beautiful screen printed cover by Grant Corum, risograph insert with liner notes by Cherel Ito, original cover art by Teiji Ito and mastered for the first time by Timothy Stollenwerk."

VA Sichten 1 2LP
Sichten refers both to opinions as well as the examination of material. In loose sequence, Raster invites friends and colleagues, but especially music lovers to share their opinions on music or to look through their collected materials in order to present music that tends to be out of the focus of current media channels. As a label for electronic music Raster's focus is on examining exactly this genre. But in the context of the series, the label is looking for more hidden, unknown, perhaps forgotten music. Raster wants to present the yet-undiscovered, and also offer a platform for other cultural environments with different musical approaches. Each issue will be supervised and compiled by a curator. An introductory text shall explain the artistic approach of the respective curator. In this sense, the format of a double LP can only provide a first insight and to invite to more in-depth research. For the first issue of the series, Sichten 1, Raster asked Frank Bretschneider to compile his own, very personal selection of current electronic music. His choice fell on six artists, whose different styles meander between accessible music on the one hand and very abstract compositions on the other hand. Features: Zavoloka, Mimicof, Benjamin Brunn, Retina.it, Mads E. Nielsen, and Pierce Warnecke.

HENRIKSEN, ARVE The Height Of The Reeds LP+CD
LP version with CD. The Height Of The Reeds started as a commissioned work to the city of Hull, Great Britain´s cultural capital 2017. Composed by Arve Henriksen, Eivind Aarset and Jan Bang, the work celebrates the longstanding seafaring relationship between Hull and Scandinavia. It was originally the musical companion to a sound walk that took place in April, May and June 2017. Those who took part could listen to the music on headphones while crossing the Humber Bridge. Initially intended for April only, the arrangement proved so popular it ended up selling out three months. Only minor adjustments have been done to justify the transition from sound walk to album. Other than Henriksen, Aarset and Bang, the work includes important contributions from Hull sound artist Jez Riley French, providing field recordings from the bridge itself: the river below, the noise of engines, the creaking of steel wires, wheels against asphalt and the song of the reeds in the wind. Opera North´s choir and orchestra provides the necessary musical space for the soloists, and two actors and a child read from translated poems by Norwegian poet Nils Christian Moe-Repstad.

GARONI, ROCKO Detection EP 12"
Having been label manager of Sisyphon, in-house imprint of the acclaimed Sisyphos Club in Berlin, Rocko Garoni is no stranger to curating high-quality records, and this time he gets to be curator of his own stunning Detection EP. The title track is a mischievous number that is as equal parts vicious and cunning as it is sensual and inviting. "Phaseful" reveals glimmers of classic house artifacts scattered over an energetic drum illustration. "Tragedy" contributes low-slung drums, spanning bass and sinister vocal declarations before a rework of "Detection" by Regal, a classic sure to make the forefathers of techno proud.

KLEIN, MICHAEL Snapshot 2LP
To say Michael Klein has been on a roll as of late would be a gross understatement. Klein has been pushing his unique and undeniably infectious sound to the masses as a DJ and producer all while running his own BLK DRP imprint, his platform for releasing only his originals. With huge releases and remixes on Second State, Octopus and most recently Dense & Pika's highly lauded Kneaded Pains label, Michael Klein is fully en route on his trajectory to solidifying himself among the industry's elite. Thus, Second State is honored to be the platform for him to present his debut album Snapshot. Over the course of eleven tracks, Klein flexes his proverbial muscles showcasing his prowess for top notch productions that reveal a mastermind of modern techno. From the very start, Klein exhibits a maturity most take decades to achieve. On "Boot Sequence", the album commences with a euphoric, broken-beat excursion into the vast spaces of sonic wonder, setting the stage for the array of dance floor destruction to come. "Flashes In Your Eyes" takes the baton and dives into full-fledged elation with a growing acid line taking the lead. Following suit, yet adding more drums, "Dismantled Structure" delivers a high-octane ride before "Them Psychos", where Klein's trademark grooves take center stage. Snapshot builds slowly, adding one more element or variation to continue the climatic ascension when "Dirty Daddy" steps into focus relying on crisp, reeling percussion and a sinister low-end rumble. Eloquently taking a turn mid-album, "Drink Those" dives into dreamy territories where melody steps front and center before "100" veers into an ominous lead and hypnotic percussives. However, Klein has saved the peak-time antics for a bit later on "Wall Licker", before the reverb-heavy "Glitter Bath" takes over with an incredible groove where the drums do all the work. Klein then takes it back to where it all began with the ethereal setting of malevolent aural display of broken rhythms and deep-space sonics on "So Far To Go". Closing the album, "Dissolving" leaves his mark with subtle yet powerful washes of aural shimmers and an embrace of plush emotions. With an absolutely timeless aesthetic, Klein has delivered a monumental effort with Snapshot; there is no doubt in his intention, to create immortal orchestras of electronic artifacts. Dive in and experience Snapshot; you won't be sorry.

RUE ROYALE In Parallel LP
LP version. Includes full color inner sleeve; Includes download code. Over a decade into their musical life as Rue Royale, Brookln and Ruth Dekker are back with In Parallel, an album of bold, rhythmic, and sometimes haunting songs born from a time of beauty and tumult. The album was done with the help from Sean Carey (Bon Iver, S. Carey) whose rhythmic inventiveness adds a new texture to Rue Royale's music. The Nottingham-based Anglo-American duo have paid their dues with 1,000+ shows in 16 countries. In 2014, the pair took an enforced period of time off the road. After seven years of virtually non-stop life on-the-road, they needed a breather. Instead, they had a baby. Being joined in life by a daughter, the oft-clichéd pleasure and pain of child rearing became real at home whilst paying the bills and facing up to political upheavals in their dual home countries with Trump and Brexit. "We're conscious that things have maybe taken a bit longer to kick into gear again than we, and those who follow us, anticipated," says Ruth. "We're now embracing our differing perceptions and balancing imbalances. We're moving forward with a confidence and a sort of wide-angle view comprised of our parallel-realities, exploring these themes and feelings in In Parallel."

TAEGGI, ANDREA Zimni Kral LP
London-based label SM-LL presents its second 12" LP release, Zimní Král, from Italian artist Andrea Taeggi. Taeggi works in Berlin as a composer, live performer and electronic music producer. Besides his solo practice under his own name or under the moniker Gondwana, he is also a part of the long-standing electroacoustic project Lumisokea. His music has been released on vinyl and dubplate on labels Opal Tapes, Type, and Präsens Editionen. The music on this record was made using a vast array of rare analog machines Taeggi had the chance to work on at the Willem-Twee synthesis studio in Holland (built with the iconic Studio di Fonologia RAI as a blueprint). Most of the percussive sounds come from an analog computer, which has been rarely used as a music instrument as its main purpose was flight simulation. In fact, during the Cold War times it was also used as a measurement tool by civil engineers and even by the army. At present, no one has ever officially released music recorded at the Willem-Twee synthesis studio. The music on this record further explores cyclical, minimal and hypnotic concoctions, a particular investigation focused on unusual rhythms that Taeggi had already started on his well-received Mama Matrix Most Mysterious, (TYPE 126LP, 2015). Think walls of sub frequencies, snappy rollercoasters of the mind, labyrinths in hyperspace, and snakes eating their own tails.

Inspired by "soundtracks, music of past times, '70s, '80s, ambient, Boards Of Canada, Charlotte Gainsbourg and Grouper", her mix of reverbed beats, electronica, guitars and vocals are like a deep-sea dreampop. Following her guest appearance on Jefre Cantu-Ledesma's album On The Echoing Green (2017), this is Sobrenadar's first international release. LITTLE VICTOR Deluxe Lo-Fi LP
Multiple award-winner guitarist, harp player, songwriter, singer, and producer Little Victor Mac aka The Beale Street Blues Bopper is back after eight years with his ground-breaking album Deluxe Lo-Fi. The record , produced by Victor, features Kim Wilson of The Fabulous Thunderbirds (Muddy Waters, Eric Clapton, Bonnie Raitt, Cadillac Records), Steve Lucky (Blues Persuaders, Johnny Copeland, Spin Doctors, Blues Traveler), Carl Sonny Leyland (Chuck Berry, James Cotton, Louisiana Red, Lowell Fulson), Jo' Buddy (Gene Taylor, Junior Watson, Fred Kaplan), Big Jon Atkinson ( John Primer, Dave Riley, Willie Buck, Alabama Mike), Brent Harding (Social Distortion, Deke Dickerson, Mike Ness), Tomi Leino (Taildragger, Bob Corritore, Trickbag), Harpdog Brown, Jordie Edmonds, and other great musicians. Little Victor believes lo-fi is the new hi-fi and he explores all types of lo-fi sounds, from slightly lo-fi to ultra lo-fi, and the album thus demonstrates a wide range of styles from '50s rockin' blues to raw late '50s/early '60s R&B and soul, and from pre-war blues to blues boppers; there are a lot of danceable numbers on this album. Victor even goes back to his rock and roll roots with a fun Little Richard-type of song. He tried to make this new opus sound like a collection of vintage scratchy obscure 45s and 78s. Little Victor claims this is the best album he has done since the Back To The Black Bayou (2009) and features some of the best songs he ever wrote and also some of his best performances as a vocalist and guitarist.

HINOSCH Hands CD
Hinosch are a duo of Koshiro Hino (YPY, Goat) from Osaka and Stefan Schneider (To Rococo Rot, Mapstation) from Düsseldorf, they first (met and) began their collaborative work of musical interaction and exploring contrasting possibilities in 2017. After a number of concerts in the EU and in Japan, they released their self-titled debut EP (TAL 005EP, 2017). Fully instrumental, their first full-length album Hands offers a more steeply focused approach than its largely improvised predecessor. Encouraged by the momentum generated during a number of on-the-spot recordings in Osaka, where Schneider had held a residency in April 2017, the overall sound of the album has been honed down through meticulous studio engineering. One of the outstanding qualities of Hands certainly is an unprejudiced approach of sound and song structures. The instrumentation is confidently reduced to a small range of analog and digital machines. Snatches of tape-loops deliver lower-pitched vocal and drum machine samples. This characteristic technical set up soon proved ideal in order to define a tactile vocabulary of fully unsynchronized rhythm patterns. The word tactile perfectly conjures that quality which is the very essence of Hands. It is the result of the manner in which interdependent threads of rhythm units are deliberately disconnected to form a cohesive, soulful and flexible whole. Most tracks on Hands are devoid of a central motif and examine an unpredictable dialogue. A fantasy of constant change and a search for musical suggestions is the most vital ingredient in this abstract environment. The album title Hands refers to physical aspects of electronic music production. Every live concert of Hinosch usually starts out with a hand shake between Hino and Schneider. The general process of collective music making, programming, button pushing, playing, recording, decision making, all-demand utmost concentration. The image on the front of the album sleeve -- designed by Takashi Makabe -- reflects the general approach of Hands: layers of tucked fabrics confronting one another to articulate a form for themselves to no other end than their own orchestration. Koshiro Hino's solo activities as YPY and his involvement with the band Goat have already garnered him a favorable international reception. Stefan Schneider has over the years produced and collaborated with, amongst others, Joachim Roedelius, Arto Lindsay, Klaus Dinger, Dieter Moebius, Alexander Balanescu, John McEntire, Katharina Grosse, Bill Wells, and St.Etienne. CD version comes in an edition of 400.

UNHAPPYBIRTHDAY Schaum LP+CD
LP version. Includes CD. Unhappybirthday, continue their cycle of a new album every three years here with Schaum. It's an unusually prolific rate of output for a band as young as Unhappybirthday, yet wholly in keeping with their anachronistic nature. In contrast to most of their contemporaries in the class of 2010 who took to the stage, the next generation inspired by Beggar's Banquet, Factory, and ZickZack, the synthesizers and drum machine they borrowed were not tools of sheer irony or approximations of raging rebellion. The last Unhappybirthday album, Schauer, was released in 2015, influenced by Georges Perec's novel Un Homme Qui Dort (1967), a young man's meditation on melancholy, indifference, inertia. Here, they took the jangly pop of carefree youth and bestowed upon it a degree of earnestness and sincerity; traditional values perhaps, seen through the prism of today. Schaum is the trio's first album to have been created without the aid of a tape recorder. Working closely with Berlin producer Jonas Meyer, their sound has matured, shattering the raw lo-fi veneer of the past to explore complex spaces with unimagined agility and clarity. The dry baritone of Daniel Jahn conjures up images of hazy summer evenings and gossamer rain, evaporating before it touches the hot asphalt surface. Tobias Rutkowski's guitar is a conduit for deep-rooted desire, the likes of which has not surfaced since the Cocteau Twins. Diana Kim, who joined on bass in 2017, adds her own kinesthetic counterpoint to spherical keyboard motifs. If Schaum were a person you had met, you would be enraptured and helpless in equal measure, unable to find words for such magic. If the eight new tracks can be attributed to a particular genre, shoegaze comes closest, albeit with a sense of form skillfully distilled from the 1980s; a diaphanous essence found less in concrete, constituent parts and more in the work as a whole. There is a shimmer of the vitreous elegance once epitomized by David Sylvian, without actually sounding like Japan; an echo of Sade's silky stylishness without for a moment implying that this should be added to a cocktail party playlist. Instead, like the finest traces of perfume, a note here and there sparks recollections, hinting at the playful experimentation of Les Disques Du Crépuscule releases. The result is sophisticated pop, overcast with dreams, music falling like light on mother of pearl, a transient memory of moist, warm skin.

ETHIER, ANDRE Under Grape Leaves LP
"In Andre Ethier's (The Deadly Snakes) remarkable Under Grape Leaves, a world emerges in and out of focus under the dappled green light of a backyard arbor. This collection of songs offers a kind of escape, but the invitation is less about checking out than it is about checking in. The record feels like a surreal and subtle manifesto for embracing radical domesticity in the midst of the modern storm, which here is just a distant synthetic rumble in the background. There are shifts in perspective and in landscape, from the rhythms of dishes knocking together in the sink to the space between the sea and the sea wall. Blending acoustic guitar with common household instruments like flute, recorder, and a drum machine, this feels homemade in the most literal sense. But this isn't to say that it the record doesn't come across as carefully constructed -- the attention to detail is evident in each well considered line and in the whole project's wave-like flow. Under Grape Leaves was produced by Sandro Perri."

"In 2016, after reissuing two Bruce Haack albums, Haackula and Electric Lucifer Book II, Telephone Explosion began speaking with Ted Pandel (Bruce's lifelong friend and business partner) about working on the 1970 masterpiece The Electric Lucifer. It turned out there was another matter that he wanted to discuss: finding a final resting place for the Bruce Haack archive. We were shown test-pressings of The Electric Lucifer board mixes from his Columbia studio sessions, countless pieces of written music, a large number of personal photos, an invitation from Raymond Scott inviting Bruce to play his newly created Electronium instrument (now owned by Devo's Mark Mothersbaugh), poems, press clippings, and, most importantly, a heavy-duty shelf containing 213 reel-to-reel tapes. All of the chosen material on The Preservation Tapes is unreleased, has only been heard by a handful of people and showcases a relatively unknown period in Bruce's musical career where Bruce was recording for Sparrow Records (who billed themselves as 'America's best Christian music record label'). Bruce's signature Farad vocoder continues to feature prominently, but the lyrical content is decidedly more religious. The Bruce Haack archive is now resting in the Provincial Archives of Alberta, in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada."

STATTON & SPIKE, ALISON Bimini Twist LP
Limited LP version with download card. After Young Marble Giants's breakup, singer Alison Statton started Weekend with Spike and Simon Booth, a project which saw chart success and the birth of a nouveau-retro style as individualistic as YMG's, one later co-opted by lesser acts. Weekend, too, split after their debut album. Despite Weekend having become Alison's second big act, Rough Trade passed on her next project with Spike. Vinyl Japan stepped in to release the duo's debut, Tidal Blues and other releases followed, but as real life, jobs, and children beckoned, both Alison and Spike stepped away from music for more than twenty years. Their return is unexpected. Bimini Twist is the work of the two alone. Apart from some vocal tracking in a local studio to best capture Alison's still wondrous voice -- everything was recorded in their homes, much of it "live," and these new songs show the duo's charm and diversity, featuring Alison's most personal lyrics and Spike's peculiar musical genius.

VA Spider-Jazz: KPM Cues Used In The Amazing Animated Series LP
Limited repress! Subtitled: ... That We Are Not Allowed To Mention For Legal Reasons. Rare and brilliant music as used in the late 1960s amazing animated series we are not allowed to mention for legal reasons. And the same music was used in all the NFL clip shoes throughout the '60s and '70s too. Way back in 1967, an animated superhero cartoon was released into the world. It was created by Grantray-Lawrence Animation and was based on a web-spinning, crime fighting blue-and-red dressed character that had originated in 1962, through Marvel Comics by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. This amazing series ran on ABC TV in the USA, then Canada, then a few years, it ran in the UK. The series was notoriously low budget. After Series One the company Grantray-Lawrence went bankrupt, so the amazing spider series was taken on by producer Steve Krantz. He brought in new talent, including animation director Ralph Bakshi who later went on to turn a Robert Crumb strip cartoon into the feature Fritz The Cat (1972). Krantz also slashed the already cripplingly small spider budget and brought in the idea of using economic library music. Here, thanks possibly to an independent sync agent production turned to the KPM catalog. This was one of the few really established library catalogs around at the time with a modern edge; it was full of fabulous, modern dramatic music tracks -- often all on the same LP. But more importantly all the tracks were far longer than the one-minute musical cuts that many of the fledgling USA library companies were issuing at the time. Krantz produced two amazing spider series, and both were smothered with KPM music. In fact barely a spider second goes by without music playing in either the background or foreground. For many enthusiasts this really is formative music -- a junior foray into hip swinging crime jazz and esoteric musical grooviness. So, what features on this Spider-Jazz LP? Well it's music from the amazing TV series, but, not music from Series One. No, but it is all from Series Two and Series Three. From looking at archival cue sheets, over 50 tracks from various early KPM 1000 series albums were used across the episodes. It's all distilled down into one exciting and enthralling LP. Features Syd Dale, Johnny Hawksworth, Bill Martin/Phil Coulter, David Lindup, Johnny Pearson, Keith Mansfield, and Alan Hawkshaw.

Manipulating off-the-shelf sounds from "EDM Kicks Vol.1" through various processing techniques, rkss explores the politics and aesthetics of club culture, technology, and queerness by radically altering these preconceived, "purpose-built" blocks of sound from their original use, and rendering them in a spectrum of non-standard, ambiguous designs that both highlight, abstract, and reimagine the samples' social function. The result is nine hyper-colorful, unpredictable, and uniquely engaging tracks that metaphorically connote queer dynamics, employing the user-oblivious potential of computer software to shape a form of dance music that insightfully reflects and celebrates rkss's difference within the flux of today's social spaces. In other words, it's a music very much of, and for, its times, crucially in step with current redefinitions of musical boundaries and identity politics. In rkss' own words: "DJ Tools was recorded at a turning point for me as an artist and person as I came into the aesthetic and social limitations I was finding in contemporary dance culture. I started to change how I thought about myself as an artist in terms of changing the way I created music, instead of writing the music at home and later arranging it for the club, I started writing music for live performance first. I wanted to be able to arrange these pieces/excerpts/sketches live. I was beginning to re-arrange how I thought about my gender/self and placing, exploring and finding the language to point to my sense of difference as a rans person. DJ Tools was where I began to formulate my own relationship to club culture as a mostly sober, transgender person, what version of club music did I want to engage with in that social space... Fluid, dynamic and reacting to audience. Highlighting the social. Sharing & connecting through my difference rather than erasing it." RIYL: Florian Hecker, Rian Treanor, Jesse Osborne-Lanthier, V/Vm, Evol, Errorsmith, Theo Burt. Master and vinyl cut by Matt Colton at Alchemy.

SAUNA YOUTH Deaths LP
LP version. 180 gram vinyl; Edition of 500. Upset The Rhythm present Deaths, the final part in a trilogy of albums by Sauna Youth that started with Dreamlands (WAAT 048LP/049CD) in 2012. Dreamlands was followed by Distractions (UTR 071CD/LP, 2014) and consequently the songs that comprise Deaths are collectively about the act of finishing, an ode to "the ending". Creating this album was a working research project embodying what is sometimes the hardest part of musical endeavor: completing a record. Making a new album is always daunting, but when all band members also have full-time jobs and other commitments it can also seem logistically impossible. Then there is the nagging, unattainable perfectionism that can draw out a record for months or even years. The twelve tracks on Deaths touch on political rhetoric, artistic legacy, action and passivity, work and leisure, and, of course, distraction, referencing many musical genres in the process while never leaving punk's orbit. The album was recorded by John Hannon of No Recording Studios in June 2017 over three days, mixed by Jonah Falco and mastered by Kris Lapke. The cover was shot in a garden in Brixton by Owen Richards, who also photographed the covers for the previous albums. Additional artwork was provided by R.M. Phoenix. Sauna Youth is Boon, Mince, Ecke, and Pines. They played together in the band Monotony, and between them have played or do play in other bands and music projects including Primitive Parts, Feature, Child's Pose, Lilac, Cold Pumas, Oblate, Teufelskreis, Mind Jail, Gold Foil, and Tense Men as well as being involved with the organizations Good Night Out, The Positive Press, Constant Flux, and Heart n Soul.

TERRY I'm Terry CD
"I'm going to set 'Carpe Diem', the first track on Terry's new album I'm Terry as my alarm for the next week and see how that makes me feel. It will be replacing an alternation of 'Werewolves of London' and 'Baby, It's You'. After a week the familiarity might feel kind of insane but kind of nice. Terry is into repetition. Terry often feels like the daily grind set inside a Looney Tune. They can be nasty and violent, but funny at the same time. I laugh at Terry riffs a lot. The lyrics are droll, but have you heard the riffs? It's like they're tickling you. But this is all part of a plan; I would almost say that Terry is highly conceptual, possibly the most conceptual band I've been around. What's really going on here? Why am I listening to jingles and feeling so moved? My favorite songs on I'm Terry -- the band's third record in three years, following on from Terry HQ (UTR 084CD/LP, 2016) and Remember Terry (UTR097CD/LP, 2017) -- are 'Under Reign', sandwiched between other new favorites 'The Whip' and 'Crimes'. There's a theme of dominance and submission here, but unremarkable and ignorable, like knowing you're enslaved by your streaming service but putting that out of your mind for another week. Terry is domesticity; Terry romances the mundane. This is how romance triumphs. That's what Billy Bragg's 'A New England' and Squeeze's 'Up The Junction' do. Terry's suburban escapism moment is 'Ciao Goodbye'; Listen to it on an arterial road under the yellow streetlights of a weeknight. Terry has never been this beautiful, and Terry may never be beautiful again, definitely not on this record. That's what I like about Terry, there are few rules. They seem to make a song out of whatever sounds good to them; they aren't a genre study. Have you noticed the reggae undercurrent in Terry? There is one; Terry are like Steely Dan or 10cc. Both bands make me queasy after a certain point. Terry probably also make me a bit queasy, singing about police beatings and nationalism and all that, but they're not out to hurt you. They're like the kindly bearer of bad news. I'm pretty certain Terry isn't perverse; they're just the harbinger of the encroaching perverse world." --Lee Parker, 2018

HAUNTER Thrinodia LP
Haunter's debut album, Thrinodia, delivers forty-six and a half minutes of aggressive, filth-encrusted black/death metal, heavy on gritty, grating nihilism and grim, somber melody, without mercy or compromise. The vocals of Bradley Tiffin are unflinchingly bestial throughout, and are frequently employed more as simply another instrument in the collective cacophony, rather than as something separate in their own right, rising from a rumbling, blast-furnace roar to a chalkboard-scraping shriek, sometimes reaching a level of apoplectic fury (see the barnburning "Vial" for proof) which renders them nearly indecipherable. "Thus My Undertaking, to Reject Stagnation, and to Liberate Fervency" may have a knowingly pretentious title, but it just so happens to be one of the album's best songs, transitioning from its haunting, minimalist intro into a raging torrent of scorched-earth guitar work and lithe, limber bass lines, before running through a violent sequence of of straining, strangling tremolo runs, chaotic blast-work, and dreary, disconsolate melodic interludes, with barely a pause for breath.

ABSTRACTER Cinereous Incarnate LP
The ominous trudge of Cinereous Incarnate is the result of years of honed efforts. This is the band's third full length and perhaps the most fully and elegantly conceived to date. Abstracter's ability to conjure up incredible and death defying atmospheres is impressive to say the least. Not only that though but there is something with the guitar tone that almost suffocates the listener. You find yourself drowning under a sea of volume and loving every oppressive minute of it. Yet despite how abstract this record can be and the familiarity with the scene needed to "get it" there are some undeniable grooves that make it easy to sink in to what's been painted here. Abstracter crawl forward, covered in their own filth and loving every minute of it. The magical devastation of a song like "Wings Of Annihilation" is not to be underestimated and is a clear indicator of the bands songwriting talent. Cinereous Incarnate is not just a masterful release -- it's symbolic of all that black metal can be. It is mesmerizing and cruel, over the top and punishing. ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND, THE Eat A Peach 2LP
2018 repress. During the recording of this album, band leader Duane Allman was tragically killed in a motorcycle accident. Still reeling from their loss, the band nonetheless managed to complete this classic album with Dickey Betts on guitar. In tribute to Duane, however, they chose to bring the album to a close with a 34-minute jam taken from the Fillmore East sessions, which showcased what an amazing guitar player and force to be reckoned with Duane really was. Includes 3 bonus tracks and a replica of the original insert." The 4th Allman Brothers album, originally released in 1972. 180 gram virgin vinyl, deluxe gatefold sleeve.
