SIMONETTI, MIKE Solipsism (Collected Works 2006-2013) CD
Solipsism is an archival release of music from Mike Simonetti's tenure as owner of Italians Do It Better Records, spanning from 2006-2013. During that time Mike wrote a lot of music. Some of it was used for films, some for TV commercials, some for fashion shows and he even released a record or two. Influenced by the intersection of '80s arena rock bands like AC/DC and Judas Priest, glam rock/dance bands like Rockets and Supermax, and especially the underground Italian producer Piero Umiliani -- the album is chock-full of atmospheric rock-inspired arpeggiated riffs. The mixture of metal and chugging dance music makes for a unique listening experience. Every song has a riff, every song is heavy and dense. Only one song goes above 118 bpm. These are heavy chuggers that make for a tense emotional experience that exceeds your standard, easy-to-write-off "soundtrack" fare, mainly because it was never written with that in mind. It was meant to be a fist-pumping arena rock inspired thumper. You can hear that in the one two punch of "A Prayer For War" into "Illusions," which is an outtake from his "The Magician" sessions. Other songs like "Solipsism" showcase the airy melodies that were to come with his other project Pale Blue. If you listen closely, you can hear how Simonetti's music and dark vibes inspired his then label partner Johnny Jewel to take his own bands Chromatics and Glass Candy in a different, more cinematic direction. This was written and recorded years before the Drive soundtrack and all the hoopla around the sudden soundtrack resurgence. In 2011 Mike was asked to submit some songs for a soon-to-be-released Hollywood remake. He submitted most of the songs from this album, and they were slated for release on the soundtrack, but the project fell apart, and the film went in a different direction and changed producers. Soon after, because of all the drama and foolishness, he left Italians Do It Better to start over with 2MR and Pale Blue. This is the nail in the coffin. Godspeed.

The band also originally intended the album to contain a bonus disc of two long-form ambient pieces, "Happiness and Colour" and "The Hut", both of which lasted over 20 minutes and represented the band's desire to "make a record of sound as a description for something like happiness, where a distinct first part gives way to a distinct second part". However, the band and label ultimately decided to remove these tracks from the original album prior to release; for this edition they have been restored as a bonus disc.

ALU Die Vertreibung Der Zeit (1980-1986) LP
LP version. ALU's inception as descendants of the psychedelic group Sand, founded by Ludwig Papenberg and Johannes Vester, comes in 1980. Their first single "Bitte Warten Sie!" appears on their own label Der Letzte Schrei! in 1981. Even on these early recordings, the project's sonic orientation is discernible: sequencer-driven, simplistic rhythmic structures layered over fragments of free text, a common thread tracing ALU's musical contours through various successive metamorphoses. Although the band emerged from Berlin's cassette underground, their brittle sound is closer to the likes of Nocturnal Emissions or Cabaret Voltaire in England than to their German counterparts. The first realignment came in 1981 when vocalist Nadja Molt joined the group. Her voice cuts deep furrows into the tracks, at times lurking ominously in the background, elsewhere virtually exploding out of certain tracks. Logged by the band as ALU II, this phase fails to produce any studio recordings, but two live LPs Störfaktor I - Alus Riskantes Experiment 31.7.81 im Risiko (1981) and Licht (1982) survive as audible witnesses. Ludwig Papenberg left before 1982 reached its conclusion; Vester and Molt continued as a duo, now called ALU III, resolutely pursuing the principles of concentrated improvisation and maximum creative autonomy. On the live cassette, Geistige Erneuerung (1983), the band outlined their philosophy, "We aim to store as many sounds, noise and rhythmic frameworks as possible in our synthesizers and drum machines as we allow them to unfold naturally when we play live. Words and vocals are snapshots, spontaneous phenomena." Two other cassettes were released the same year, Ungesunde Traumbilder and Attrition/Alu. These proved to be the final studio recordings before ALU exited the scene with a concert at Fabrik in Hamburg, entitled Performance und kein Ende in 1986. The ALU oeuvre thus covers seven years of divergent creativity, yet the group's inner compass never wavers. ALU represent understated understatement, their music touching on genres such as electro, techno or IDM which would only materialize years later. Repetitive sequences sound like taut loops, their frequencies tuned to allow the original sample to shine through in skeletal fashion. Die Vertreibung der Zeit is more than a mere historical document; in order to understand the bigger picture of contemporary club culture, this collection is an essential piece of the puzzle.

WEATHERALL, ANDREW Blue Bullet EP 12"
Andrew Weatherall returns with Ride's (and Oasis') guitarist Andy Bell for a second release on Byrd Out. Andrew suggested Bell test a Les Paul guitar out over a track he was working on, and "Making Friends With The Invader" is the resulting track, which Andrew paired with the EP's title track "Blue Bullet." Both tracks plough the trippy, cosmic dub furrow, and come in at a weighty eight and nine minutes plus.

NANDU One Mans High Is Another Mans Anxiety 2LP
The first LP release for Connected comes from Nandu and as with his previous release, Another Jam EP (CONNECTED 022EP, 2018), One Mans High Is Another Mans Anxiety is a unique genre-crossing palette containing elements from deep house, house, Afrohouse, electronic techno and beyond brought together in Nandu's original style. One Mans High Is Another Mans Anxiety is truly an album that begs to be listened to from start to finish. In Nandu's own words: "One man's high can truly be, another man's anxiety. In some parts of life, this is very clear, like having a baby, doing drugs, to work, not to work, be an artist, be a banker and so it continues. Yin and yang and the whole idea of duality is another way to describe this. When you go left you say goodbye to right, at least for the moment you choose left. What you choose is up to you. It wasn't always my dream to get up at 3AM to change diapers, but it was always my dream to have a family. And here, the sacrifice is not even mentionable. It's more than worth it. But when you sometimes in life make a choice that you regret but which always will follow you, or when uncontrollable powers force you into another direction, it can easily switch the poles between high and low. In these cases you just have to look forward, but not without looking back. You need to learn, take it with you, and do better next time. This album is about how my highs also can be my anxieties."

"Seems like only yesterday but it's 30 years since the first Damaged Goods release! As part of the anniversary celebrations we're releasing this compilation bringing together a selection of top tracks, deep cuts, lost gems and personal favourites. Punk, garage and indie are all well represented, with artists including Thee Headcoats, Holly Golightly, Johnny Moped, Manic Street Preachers, Cowbell, Pete Molinari, Fabienne Delsol, Thee Dagger Debs and many more! The past is a foreign country and there's certainly been many changes in the musical climate since 1988. Formats have come and gone (and returned!). Online, digital and streaming music were all pure science fiction then. But good music is as they say timeless. With this in mind we bring you some of the best music Damaged Goods Records has released since its humble beginnings in Ian Damaged's front room. With 500 releases to date it was difficult to whittle this collection down onto two pieces of vinyl and one shiny compact disc but we're happy with the result. As a handy best-of or taster for further investigation we hope you'll enjoy this selection. Place it on your turntable, crank up the volume and enjoy!"

Shortly before she withdrew from the spotlight, Reid issued her one and only long player, One Life To Live, which has since become one of the most sought-after collections from the golden age of reggae. Comprising nine compelling instrumental sides from the Upsetters, the set also features fine vocal offerings from Busty Brown and the Silvertones, disguised as the Muskyteers. The following year, Trojan released the popular follow-up, Scratch The Upsetter Again, which further demonstrated the producer's increasingly innovative approach to music making that was beginning to display elements of the developing dub sound. Annotated by Lee 'Scratch' Perry biographer, David Katz, the CD provides a wonderful opportunity to enjoy and experience the early work of a man whose work significantly contributed to the transformation of the sound of Jamaican music."

GANDERA, SEBASTIAN Le Raccourci LP
Le Raccourci is a welcome introduction to the world of Sebastian Gandera. The impressionist landscapes of a sensitive soul self-reflecting, these miniature compositions alternate across a rudimentary set up of piano, field recorder, sampler and four-track recorder, melancholic utterings hastily captured some 100km east of Paris. Classically trained by the same teacher as his parents, Gandera first began recording in the confines of his university dorm room, inspired by a C60 from friend and future collaborator Bernard Odot (A Gethsémani). Humbly existing without sparing a thought to music industry or career, Gandera's personal efforts surfaced via the European and US cassette networks from 1988 to 1994. Impressively accomplished for the DIY scene they orbited, these tapes were issued in scant quantities, rendering his pieces as private secrets shared and duplicated in small concentric circles. Aside from a sole, avowedly traumatic performance, the material was never shared in a live context. Selected by Sky Girl co-conspirer Julien Dechery, Le Raccourci culls 15 tracks from Gandera's extensive cassette discography, discarded DAT recordings, and split CD with Lyon toy music project Klimperei. These sentiently charged compositions only hint at his larger catalog, but act as a compelling cross-section of the artist's oeuvre. The identity is further detailed by archival images, Glen Goetze-penned liner notes and original artwork from Perks and Mini's Misha Hollenbach. While Gandera's nostalgic melodies incidentally parallel with the piano key manoeuvres of Pascal Comelade, Robert Haigh and Dominique Lawalrée, Le Raccourci could only stem from the escapist desires of Eric Morin.

BLAKE, TIM Blake's New Jerusalem (Remastered 180 Gram Edition) LP
"Mastered & cut at Abbey Road studios. Fully restored artwork and liner notes withexclusive interview. Esoteric Recordings are pleased to announce the release of a newly re-mastered 180 gram vinyl lp edition of the classic 1978 ambient masterpiece Blake's New Jerusalem by Tim Blake. Tim first came to prominence as a member of Gong, where his synthesiser experimentation and mastery was demonstrated on albums such as Flying Teapot, Angel's Egg and You. He would also join Hawkwind from 1979 - 1980 and from November 2007. After departing Gong in 1975 he teamed up with French lighting designer Patrice Warrener to form Crystal Machine, pioneering the use of lasers and synthesisers in a live setting. Blake's debut solo album, Crystal Machine, was originally released in 1977 on the French experimental label Egg. Tim followed this with arguably his finest work, Blake's New Jerusalem in 1978. Unlike his previous work, the album featured songs and the lengthy title-track would dominate the album's second side. New Jerusalem also featured the guest appearance of Jean-Philippe Rykiel on mini-moog. Tim Blake would later perform both 'Lighthouse' and 'New Jerusalem' as a member of Hawkwind when he joined the band the following year. Now regarded as a truly pioneering work, Blake's New Jerusalem has been newly re-mastered and cut at Abbey Road studios for this first ever 180 gram vinyl LP reissue, which is a facsimile of the original 1978 Egg LP release."

AYLER TRIO, ALBERT Spiritual Unity LP
2018 repress. LP version. 180 gram virgin vinyl. Pressed in the United States with original artwork restored. Spiritual Unity, recorded on July 10, 1964, is the album that made Albert Ayler and ESP-Disk' famous (or, in some people's eyes/ears, infamous). Mr. Ayler had already recorded in Europe and, in February '64, in New York, but this was the first album on which neither he nor his collaborators held back. It was also ESP's first jazz recording. Spiritual Unity presented a new improvisation paradigm: looser structure, less regard for standard pitch, and no obligation to present a regular beat. Ayler's sound was unprecedented, much rawer than any other jazz of the time. Sometimes it was expressed in squalls of untempered sound, sometimes in outbursts of poignant spontaneous melody. Meanwhile, under and around the leader's unfettered self-expressions, bassist Gary Peacock and drummer Sunny Murray reinvented the roles of their instruments.

Growing up in cosmopolitan Istanbul listening to Anatolian music icon Selda Ba?can and Kurt Cobain in equal measure, Akyol skipped right over the tired Oriental/Occidental paradigmatic clichés. Following the widespread critical acclaim for Hologram ?mparatorlu?u, Gaye and her sublime band spent 18 months traveling up and down Turkey, Europe, and the Middle and Far East, sharing with audiences a vibrant mix of raki-laced traditional balladry, futurist surf, and post-punk opposition. Istikrarl? Hayal Hakikattir, produced by her and guitarist Ali Güçlü ?im?ek, is arguably more immediate and visceral than the first two, reflecting her and the band's growing reputation as a powerful live act. Istikrarl? Hayal Hakikattir, which translates as "Consistent Fantasy is Reality", is a deeply poetic album; an album of personalized politics, an album that digs into the heart our contentious, inexplicable contemporary experience. Gaye Su Akyol: "'Consistent Fantasy is Reality' is the third album in my discography . . . Like my second album, it is published by Dunganga Records (our own record company) in Turkey and by Glitterbeat worldwide. In terms of its philosophy, lyrics, music and motto, this album is the dream of pure freedom, of showing the courage to be yourself, of looking at the culture I was born into without alienation, a 'dreaming practice' propounded into a country and world that is increasingly turning inward and becoming a conservatized prison. Musically the album combines influences from the Anatolian pop/Anatolian rock genre that emerged in Turkey during the '60s and the '70s with Turkish classical music scales and vocal aesthetics, and various subgenres of rock (psychedelic, post-punk, surf), bringing together strong ballads, Turkish folk tunes, the conventional guitar-bassdrums trio with percussions, joined by violin, oud, cumbush, and -- as new additions that the previous albums did not have -- baglama (Turkish native instrument), electronic beats, and wind instruments like saxophone and trumpet, all together making up a very rich instrumental palette." LP version comes on 180 gram vinyl; Includes download code. Personnel: Gaye Su Akyol - vocals, percussions, electronics; Ali Güçlü ?im?ek - electric and acoustic guitar, back vocal; Görkem Karabudak - bass and acoustic guitar, keyboard, electronics, back vocal; Ediz Haf?zo?lu - drums; ?lhan Er?ahin - saxophone; Barlas Tan Özemek - classical guitar (?ahmeran); Ahmet Ayzit - violin, oud, electro saz, cumbush; Ismail Dar?c? - percussions; O?uz Can Bilgin - trumpet.

BIXIGA 70 Quebra Cabeca 2LP
Double LP version. 180 gram vinyl; Includes download code. São Paulo's acclaimed ten-piece instrumental collective return for their fourth album, Quebra Cabeça. Urban Afro-Brazilian grooves, empowered horn-driven melodicism, and massive dancefloor inspiration. One of South America's most exhilarating musical propositions. Almost four centuries after the first slave ships loaded their cargoes and set sail, the connection between Brazil and West Africa remains firm and deep. Africa is everywhere in Brazil, and it pulses through the music on Quebra Cabeça ("Puzzle"), Bixiga 70's second studio album for Glitterbeat, where two continents dance together across the black Atlantic. Bixiga 70 have created hybrid in their music --with each member pulling from candomblé (the African-Caribbean religion), jazz, reggae, dub -- and each influence takes on a slightly different form. On Quebra Cabeça, that sound becomes more complex. That's apparent in the shifts and turns of a piece like "Pedra De Raio" or "Levante", where the melody shifts and swerves, one section flowing naturally into the next, adding layer upon layer to create something astonishing and utterly satisfying in its power. In large part, this change has come from the band's relentless touring over the last few years. "We've been exposed to so much," flutist Cuca Ferreira notes. "So many of the people we've played with have had an impact on us, like Pat Thomas, the Ghanaian highlife singer or [Nigerian saxophonist] Orlando Julius. And then we toured and recorded with João Donato . . . We've learned from them all, they've made us think about what we can do with our music." One result is the new, shining lyricism of the melodies, with the horns pushed even more to the fore, parading around with a singer's swagger. Quebra Cabeça is a very memorable set of hummable earworms, from the title cut that opens up the album and continuing, sinewy and cool and relentless, all the way to the final note of "Portal". Throughout though, the heartbeat of everything remains utterly African, refracted through the prism of the band's home in the Bixiga neighborhood of São Paulo. Bixiga 70 has always been a reflection of the streets where they live. The band played their first show in October 2010 and released their debut album a year later. Eight years on they are still the same ten-piece collective, honing and shaping the music, evolving towards the changes found on Quebra Cabeça.

FELDMAN, MORTON String Quartet II 6LP BOX
Excerpt from liner notes by Sebastian Claren: "When Morton Feldman wrote his second string quartet -- or String Quartet II, as he titled it in the score -- in 1983, he found himself at the height of his career: prior to this, his long form compositions, of which the majority lasted around one and a half hours, had not isolated him or let him disappear from concert and festival programming, as he had expected, but were on the contrary celebrated as a major 'breakthrough' and a big 'step forward' . . . Like the long pieces that preceded it, Feldman's String Quartet II consists of repeated patterns, which usually surface at a certain point in the composition without preparation, are maintained over a given period, and then abruptly abort to possibly return later. In this context, Feldman has always emphasized the interplay of 'reiteration' and 'change' in his music -- two aspects that in his mind had been decisive criteria of the music of the twentieth century as 'repetition' and 'variation' (Stravinsky and Schoenberg). He even claimed Schoenberg's concept of 'developing variation' for his composition technique..." Live Recording! 317 minutes over six LPs. Personnel: Morton Feldman - composition; Pellegrini Quartet: Antonio Pellegrini - violin; Thomas Hofer - violin; Fabio Marano - viola; Helmut Menzler - violoncello.

RABIT Life After Death LP
Rabit presents Life After Death, his third full-length album. The album was recorded in home studios in Houston, Texas and Paris, France, and is the culmination of two years of experiments in various forms of synthesis. Like Les Fleurs Du Mal (HALC 016LP, 2017), Life After Death marks a further advancement in the development of his own distinct musical language. Realized through genre-free expressions that pull inspiration from Surrealist art to DJ Screw, Enigma, and Japanese ambient artists like Hiroshi Yoshimura, the album has an exploratory, transcendental core. The project's artwork (a cut-up mandala?) can be seen as a reflection of the artist's kaleidoscopic approach to this pivotal new album. This is a transformative moment not only for the creator but for the listener as well. Rabit notes, "the probing and revisiting of genres in electronic music felt fetishistic and limiting and wasn't the best way for me to communicate." Instead, his approach reflects a wider, broader sound field. Rabit adds, "Exploring sound is alchemy if you want it to be, but I would be wary to explain these aspects of my work because there's a raw understated quality to the record that I want to respect. I think the occult term is interesting because I don't hear this explored in music in ways that I find relevant. I leave it to time and the intelligent listener to make up their own meaning." Life After Death is in some ways the sonic equivalent of an early Alejandro Jodorowsky movie, or maybe even like being guided through a tarot reading by Jodorowsky himself. It's an alchemical, mysterious and captivating listen, yet also futuristic. Rabit is thus further removed from his early work for labels like Tri Angle by building himself a more dreamlike, fluid universe. As he says, "Surrealism is still around in different ways; it is a feeling. I think there's something trying to communicate itself under the surface in the tools we all use to express. It's important to me to let that speak. This new way I create is more satisfying than ever because there are layers and feelings that reveal themselves over time." Artwork by Collin Fletcher. Mastered by Matt Colton at Alchemy.

POTTER, COLIN Rank Sonata LP
2018 repress. "Colin Potter has been a central figure in the UK's DIY and post-industrial underground since the late '70s. His ICR label, founded in 1981, blurred the lines between post-punk experimentation, crude pop, Krautrock-inspired drone work and contemporary electronica, with releases by everyone from DIY legends The Instant Automatons through Chris & Cosey of Throbbing Gristle, experimental composer Trevor Wishart, drone soundists Andrew Chalk and Darren Tate and Bryn Jones's Muslimgauze. He has also been a key collaborator with both Current 93 and Nurse With Wound, working in the studio with both groups since the late '90s as well as serving as a member of Nurse With Wound's current live line-up. From the late '90s to the late '00s Potter's IC Studio, based in a Victorian Water Tower outside Preston, was a lightning rod for musicians working beneath the radar and a focal point for the nacsent UK drone scene" --David Keenan, Red Bull Music Academy Daily, March 31, 2015. Rank Sonata encloses sounds of organic techno, somnambulistic dub, and dream-ambient. The nearly-20-minute track "A Wider Pale of Shale" sounds absolutely timeless, with an interplay between ambient and beat-driven passages that could play all night long. With "You," Potter brilliantly weaves abstract sounds into an unexpected multi-layered dub track. The deep, slow reverb-rhythm of "Knit Where?" gives the record a touch of darkness and melancholy. Rank Sonata is a brilliant piece of music full of technical sophistication and innovation.

PAUL, JOHN No Filter CD
"No Filter is the rightful extension of the Sleaford Mods idea in my opinion, but don't let that drive you into thinking this is some rehash. John Paul has, with the help of Rat and Steve Underwood, created a horrible account of modern forgotten England from the edge of his stool in the corner of the pub away from all the hard men he once ran with. It's the re-awakening of a mind trying to tune into truth and it's brutal. His wordplay and observations are near exceptional and at some points, and like all good music, it nearly devours itself as it tells musical convention to get fucked. The music too, is so fucking crap it's beautiful, like the mundane back ground music sent out from head office to all its pubs. No Filter has for me in some ways pushed the envelope of the Workers' Tale, the arrival into mid-life with its disgust for the old shit you did and the attitudes that came with all that. It's solid." --Jason Williamson (Sleaford Mods).

AAR First Grade LP
AAR is a project by Milan-based producer, DJ and designer Giorgio di Salvo. First Grade is his first record under this name, self-released in collaboration with Haunter Records, the first chapter in a new series dedicated to tonal and rhythmic experimentation. Advanced Audio Research is the ironic definition of this new music course of his, a nod to the large amount of esoteric studio gear accumulated and (ab)used during the years. The project itself is the result of years of study and experimentation with generative music matrices, based on the application of a three-dimensional array of variables and unknowns to algorithmic pattern creation. The result is punishing, close to the most radical exploits in ear-wrenching breakcore, footwork and jungle, albeit with a sonic and structural finesse that reveals the producer's manic dedication. Track A-4 is produced in collaboration with Somec and B-01 in collaboration with Heith, channeling abstract and melancholic vibes into the project. Vinyl edition of 100, each wrapped in unique hand-printed folder.

HEINALI Iridescent LP
Heinali is the alias of self-taught composer and sound-designer Oleg Shpudeiko from Ukraine. Having garnered rapturous responses to his earlier output and 2017's Anthem (INJ 004LP), Oleg continues to push the boundaries and experiment with altering mood and atmospheres of any space with abstract, yet deeply personal transmissions of ambient synthesizer work and subaqueous, minimal techno contortions. Iridescent consists of fragments of studio improvisation sessions recorded in 2016 and 2017, some of them recorded in one unedited take on a modular system and some layered and later morphed into compositions. Iridescent bares Oleg's style of sonic storytelling and austere, otherworldly textural embellishments that bring to mind Ben Frost, Akira Yamaoka, and Oneohtrix Point Never but also plants the seed for much more club-ready electro. "Starling Reprise I" is a scorching piece of ambient techno that conjures Four Tet, LTO, and Susumu Yokota's blissful, kaleidoscopic synth work whilst "Starling Reprise II" retains the frosty, steely ambience that has become Heinali's calling card.

BJORKE QUARTET, KASPER The Fifty Eleven Project 3LP BOX
Kompakt presents a new LP and audio-visual venture by Danish producer Kasper Bjørke and close cohorts. Epic in length but always captivating, The Fifty Eleven Project is an entirely ambient concept album that interprets and evokes the emotional rollercoaster Kasper experienced, from his cancer diagnosis and throughout the five years of regular check-ups. The week of the album release marks his second anniversary of getting the all-clear. The base of the album was composed on vintage analogue synthesizers, reverbs, echo and sequencers, by Kasper and synth wizard Claus Norreen, in the latter's Copenhagen studio, using the computer solely as a recording device. The violins, violas and cellos are composed and played by the Italian composer Davide Rossi, who has worked with Ennio Morricone, Jon Hopkins, Ro?yksopp, The Verve, and Goldfrapp. The piano parts are composed and played by Danish musician Jakob Littauer (of Kompakt label-mates Jatoma) on an old upright piano in a studio, and on a Steinway grand piano in the concert hall at the Royal Danish Music Conservatorium. From Max Richter's Sleep (2015), Hannah Peel's Mary Casio: Journey To Cassiopeia (2017), to much of Brian Eno's Music For Installations (2018), The Fifty Eleven Project continues in a rich vein of work by contemporary composers which explores a situation/condition, and is made with functionality and healing in mind. The visual side of The Fifty Eleven Project is made in collaboration with the culture laboratory Prxjects and acclaimed L.A.-based artist/filmmaker/photographer Justin Tyler Close, who has created art films for each of the album's tracks plus one music video including clips from all films. Furnished in an exquisite fabric box, this 180 gram 3-LP clear vinyl box is presented by cover art created by world-renowned artist Landon Metz, further cementing the release's multidisciplinary links to the art world.

LUCIER, ALVIN I Am Sitting In A Room CD
2018 repress; originally released by Lovely Music in 1981. In this fascinating exploration of acoustical phenomena, Alvin Lucier slips from the domain of language to that of music in the course of 40 minutes and 32 repetitions of a simple paragraph of text. In I Am Sitting In A Room, several sentences of recorded speech are simultaneously played back into a room and re-recorded there many times. As the repetitive process continues, those sounds common to the original spoken statement and those implied by the structural dimensions of the room are reinforced. The others are gradually eliminated. The space acts as a filter; the speech is transformed into pure sound. All the recorded segments are spliced together in the order in which they were made and constitute the work. I Am Sitting In A Room was composed in 1970 and was first performed at the Guggenheim Museum in New York City that same year. A second version was made in 1972 to accompany the dance, Dune, performed by the Viola Farber Dance Company at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. Since that time, numerous versions of this composition have been realized in various ways by other musicians, including a Swedish radio broadcast version. This recording was made by Alvin Lucier on October 29th and 31st, 1980, in the living room of his home in Middletown, CT. The material was recorded on a Nagra tape recorder with an Electro-Voice 635 dynamic microphone and played back on one channel of a Revox A77 tape recorder, Dynaco amplifier, and a KLH Model Six loudspeaker. It consists of thirty-two generations of Alvin Lucier's speech and was made expressly for Lovely Music, Ltd.

On Lightworks, the group draws on influences ranging from Henry Cow, Magma, Haniwa-Chan, and Picchio Dal Pozzo, to traditional music from Eastern Europe and South Asia. While the musicians who appear on Lightworks have extensive resumés in Austin's progressive and experimental scenes, the collective voice that emerges across the five instrumental works transcends both scene and genre, revealing a close-knit telepathic unit at the height of their powers. The tracks deliver thunderous juxtapositions of style in the spirit of the "rock in opposition" movement: Eastern folk melodies played on sax and violin are interlaced with synthesized bass lines and layered electric and acoustic guitars; meticulous notation is balanced by a raw, DIY aesthetic that emphasizes texture, and atmosphere; ancient myths are given a new soundtrack for the 21st century.

TIED & TICKLED TRIO Observing Systems 2LP
2018 repress; originally released in 2003. With their third studio album Observing Systems, the Tied & Tickled Trio has delivered their most complex self-portrait of a freely-operating music collective. Altogether, the 15 pieces on Observing Systems, some of them not more than highly elaborate and articulate "ideas," form a very tight system itself -- based on musical references, different modi operandi and scientific research -- which reaches less and less for an unconditional formal unity. With Observing Systems, the Tied & Tickled Trio does refine the idea of "space," both sonic and spiritual, in which experiences and emotions echo, in a new and ultimately refreshing purity. Suddenly, what you hear becomes as important as the blanks in the music. In these regions of ruptures and uncertainties, a fantastic vision evolves, which leads the Trio through an intense and continuously inspiring musical past. In these ruptures, music history becomes lively again. Observing Systems is music without a center. As in the architectural concepts of "Tensegrity" by Buckminster Fuller, each track represents one component in this self-suspending, durable construction, a structure whose strength increases with lightness rather than the heaviness of its components: the album as a whole.

WEBER, NORMAN Happenings Of Life 2LP
The Berliner-by-choice DJ and producer Norman Weber (also known as Luna City Express with Marco Resmann) was born in Jena/Thuringia. From childhood on he grew up with music since his father had already travelled through former East Germany as a musician and DJ. During the days of his youth he occasionally tagged along to help set up the sound system which is how he got to know the other side of life; the night filled with loud music, dancing and magical colorful lights. Along with the German reunification in 1989 came a lot more musical variety. In addition to the previous funk and disco music came acid jazz, rap and house music. To him house music was the ideal sound and the perfect middle ground among all music! In 1993, he left Jena and following a few wild, defining years met his current buddy and DJ colleague Resmann at a legendary millenium party night. Shortly after, he moved to Berlin, a city which would suit him. As a DJ team they organized two parties and increasingly started DJ'ing together in clubs. In 2004, the first joint tracks originated in collaboration with singer Kenneth Avera and in the course came up with the name Luna City Express. This was their starting shot which has led to them releasing two albums, Hello From Planet Earth (MHR 011CD, 2009) and Lunation (2016) as well as various EPs and remixes. They still play all over the world in order to convey their definition of house and spread fun to peoples' nights. Norman himself has hitherto hardly released any music under his own name; however, after 25 years of Djing the time has come to change this. After a bunch of remixes and two EPs in 2018, his debut album Happenings Of Life is released on Muna Musik. As an attendant of the first hour of this legendary Thuringian club, it appeared natural to release the first long-player in house. It's a simultaneous gratification and gift to all of those that have followed him for so many years. This album unifies several musicians and singers, especially Mr. Jack, aka Aaron Palmer. For Norman this album reflects the sound that he has loved since his early days; music in all its facets, 13 tracks ranging from downbeats to house. Enjoy!

SHE MAKES WAR Brace For Impact LP
LP version on clear vinyl. Right now, the world needs a warrior. Town by town and tour by tour, She Makes War has been widening her battle stance and soothing tortured souls with her no-holds-barred, peaceful protest music. Armed with songs to persuade and words that bite then linger with the sweetest aftertaste, she has a message -- wake up world and Brace for Impact. "People still live in fear of persecution and violence every day for the 'crime' of being themselves," attests the nom de plume of melodic visualizer, storyteller and creator Laura Kidd. "With everything that's going on in the world, adopting a brace position to protect ourselves from external forces is more important than ever." From broken hearts to broken bones, Laura was given plenty of time for rumination when she broke her right foot moments before supporting The Brian Jonestown Massacre. Tumbling off a darkened stage during soundcheck, adrenaline kicked in and, ever the fighter, the show went on. With barely enough time to visit A&E, a face full of glitter and steely resolve, she performed a slew of summer festival sets and a BBC 6Music Marc Riley session sporting a fetching knee crutch. "Having my mobility stolen from me was exhausting and depressing. I'd come up with the album title while driving on tour, daydreaming about what it must be like to be in a high-speed car crash -- I'd wondered whether there would be time to apologize to my passenger if we got in an accident -- it was a bit dark," she recalls. "After struggling through the summer with that phrase in my mind, then finding it written in the venue toilets at the end of a tour in Brighton, it just had to be the album title."

BROWN QUARTET, ROB Jumping Off The Page CD
Warehouse find of the last copies of this long unavailable 2000 release. Jumping Off The Page is a studio recording by the quartet of Rob Brown (alto sax, flute), Roy Campbell (trumpet), Chris Lightcap (bass), and Jackson Krall (drums). "Alto saxophonist and flutist Rob Brown is often featured in the context of other leaders' recordings as an inventive improviser who has enough of the early AACM in him to stretch time, space, and harmonic ideas, and enough of the late-'50s hard bop tradition in his playing to make whatever he involves himself in move. This being only his third date as a leader, it's difficult to see why. Brown is a fiery player and an inspiring bandleader. With a harsh yet rich tone that comes out of the Anthony Braxton school of alto blowing, he careens through rapid successions of crisscrossing melody lines in 'Twinkle', the opener, trading fours and overtones with Roy Campbell's trumpet. With a rhythm section comprised of the young Chris Lightcap on bass and Jackson Krall on drums, this quartet has enough heat to share a bandstand with anybody. Over seven compositions, Brown reveals how brevity is the key to dragging ideas out of his players. He is always firmly in charge, but in a capacity that is nurturing musically. There are places, such as on 'Like a Top' and 'Step With Care', where his own development in the Ornette Coleman school of melodic free improvisation shines forth as it leads the quartet into places it could never have expected to go. In all, this is an awesome example of the new jazz coming from New York." --Thom Jurek, AllMusicGuide.

KADODI Kadodi LP
After almost 15 years of peddling his own music on the streets of Mbale, Robert Mugamba's Kadodi finally gets a proper introduction to the outside world thanks to the increasingly vital Nyege Nyege Tapes crew. Kadodi pairs a transfixing percussive soundtrack with modern electronic contributions from Bamba Pana and Sun C, resulting in another remarkable document from the pearl of Africa. Extending privileged insight to the way ancient practices meet modernism near the Equator in East Africa, Kadodi renders a set of mesmerizing, rhythm-melodic percussion and crowd hollers, along with electrifying reinterpretations by local, East Ugandan producer Sun C and Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania's Bamba Pana. Placing ageless ritual music alongside its club antecedents, the results find tradition frictionlessly reconciled with modernism, drawing bridges between tribal identities and ancient belief systems, and clubs as contemporary sites of ritual enactment. The musical aspect of the ceremony is intended to induce initiates to a trance state, readying them to transcend from boyhood (basinde) into men (basani). The twice-yearly rites of passage are such an occasion that their soundtrack has now transcended from original ritual use to find its ways into nightclubs, thanks to producers such as DMX, Papas and Sun C - the pioneer of Kadodi music's shift into electronic spheres. On Kadodi, the ceremony starts on side A and continues into side B, documenting the Domadana Kadodi Performers brewing a bristling frenzy of polymetric percussion with hypnotic intensity coming as a result of their natural complexity. Following this utterly unique situation, Mbale native Sun C offers a near-ten-minute electronic reinterpretation of Kadodi music on "Kaad 4", mirroring the breathless cadence and intensity of the original in its sustained pitches and intricate syncopation of pipes and pointillist percussions. And you can trust Bamba Pana to take that one step farther on "Wateranga", where he ramps the original drums with Singeli-style pattern and pace to irresistibly energetic effect. This is incredible, unique music. Master and vinyl cut by Matt Colton. Edition of 300.

DRAKE, BOB L'isola Dei Lupi CD
"Bob's 10th solo album sees Bob playing all the usual instruments (and a few more this time) in another collection of eccentric, songs with impossible structures, extraordinary harmonies, informative lyrics (rather outré in their subject matter, as Bob's small platoon of fans like it), virtuoso playing (in a casual sort of way), some great production and impressive musical economy. The album comes with a remarkable fold-out map and Arcimboldo-esque design by graphic artist Joe Mruk. Bob Drake (b.1957) has played a lot of instruments with -- and has engineered -- all sorts of bands from the early 1970's on. Between 1978-1989 he played an important role in Denver's underground music scene, and was a founding member of both Thinking Plague and Hail. In the early 1990's while living in Los Angeles, he wound up engineering sessions with just about everybody-from Ice Cube to Shirley MacLaine, and it was there he met David Kerman and became part of 5UU's. It was also around this time that he began to write and record his own solo albums. Since 1994 Bob has lived at his home studio in Southern France, where he has played on and recorded and/or mixed hundreds of albums by artists from around the world. He is also known for his definitive re-mastering of classic albums by Art Bears, Henry Cow, ZNR, Cassiber, Homosexuals, and others. With output this vast, Bob is dangerously close to becoming a cult."

EARTHLING SOCIETY Mo - The Demon LP
Earthling Society's Mo - The Demon was recorded at Leeds College of Music between November 2017 - February 2018. The basis of the album was to record an imaginary soundtrack to the Shaw Brothers's bat-shit psychedicrazy kung fu horror film The Boxer's Omen (1983) aka Mo or Demon. The story is an everyday one. After a Hong Kong kick boxer is paralyzed by a cheating Thai competitor, his mobster brother vows revenge and journeys to Thailand for a duel. Along the way, our hero is met by bizarre visions, enters into a Buddhist monastery, and begins a quest to save the soul of a deceased monk (his twin brother in a past life) who died at the hands of a powerful black magician. We've all been there. However, the movie descends into a kind of spiritual Jodorowsky -mushroom fest that is completely deranged and is therefore one of those perfect midnight movies. Earthling Society on the recording process, "So we got free studio time at LCM in November and just went 'fuck it' let's make an imaginary soundtrack in homage to such a great movie, taking inspiration from all things musical that have inspired us over the years: Berlin-era David Bowie, prime Magazine circa Correct Use Of Soap (1989), electric Miles Davis, Caravanserai (1972)-era Santana, Embryo, and god knows what else. It doesn't really matter as it all ends up Earthling Society; we think we've made a groovy as fuck concept. Then, invited back in February we decided to record two stand-alone pieces "Spring Snow" and "Jetavina Grove" and bring all our space-rock elements and psych raga back into the fray. Throw in some super cool Korean vocals courtesy of Bomi Seo of Tirikiliatops and run the guitars through a Harmonizer H910 (as used by Tony Visconti on Low (1976) and Heroes (1977)) and it's the perfect swansong to the last 14 years of playing live and recording together. Edition of 400 on translucent violet.

HAMASE, MOTOHIKO Reminiscence LP
LP version. Studio Mule present a re-recording of Motohiko Hamase's Remiscence, originally issued in 1986. Remiscence scores a decent prize at online vinyl-selling platforms and it is worth every penny! It's a perfect "refuge from nasty reality", as the glorious British 20jazzfunkgreats blog once said. And it comes from a man that knows his trade: bass playing. An artisan on his instrument, Hamase also wrote many theoretical books in his more than four decades-long career. In the 1970's Hamase was no stranger to Tokyo's vibrant jazz scene. Together with jazz pianist Tsuyoshi Yamamoto and jazz-rock guitarist Kazumi Watanabe, he played in the Isao Suzuki sextet and was part of their landmark jazz-funk album Ako's Dream (1976). In the following years, he also played on records like Mikio Masuda's Latin-funk-jazz gem Moon Stone (1978) or Japanese female jazz singer, actress, and essayist Minami Yasuda's last album Moritato (1978). In the early 1980s, his work shifted from pure jazz to electronic and ambient spheres and he started to compose his own music around his deeply emotional bass playing. From 1985 to 1993, Hamase released five solo albums. Just recently Studio Mule issued his first one, Intaglio (STUDIOMUL 008CD/LP, 2018), in a new recording that sounds as stunning as the original release from 1986. Reminiscence is his second work for the celebrated defunct Japanese New Age record label Shi Zen, follows in a fresh shape on Studio Mule. As does the original, it features deeply touching moments of sheer pristine perfection and distributes Hamase's inner emotional landscape with a bewitching bass performance. A soothing beauty of an album, it reflects Hamase's search for spaces of melancholy, a rhizome of soundscapes that capture, settle and sound elusive while simultaneously being awe-inspiring. As with Intaglio, the 66-year-old artist gathered again some befriended musicians, rented a studio, staged his gear and recorded most of the original Reminiscence material anew, while keeping the moving musical story arc of the original album alive in a fresh wrapping. The result is a dazzling, blue mood seething, a strongly hypnotic long-player, full of personality and hybrid ambient electronic jazz spheres that open doors to unheard sound universes and that perfectly work for all those stress-relieved souls that love the disclosure of the mind and seek for a "refuge from nasty reality".

WINTER, TERESA What The Night Is For LP
What The Night Is For is Teresa Winter's engrossing second album for The Death of Rave. Unfolding around recollections of a bad dream about being murdered by her boyfriend and hidden under a hotel bed, Teresa's new side expands upon the morbid, psycho-sexual and occult fascinations of her cultishly acclaimed Untitled Death (RAVE 020LP, 2017) in a singular and unpredictable style of composition where avant-classical, acid-house and ambient dream-pop collapse in a confounding and traumatic account of her hauntological reality. Recorded in Northern England amid the socio-political tumult of 2018, What The Night Is For is concerned with notions of liberation and repression, both sexual, psychic and political, which feel ever more impending in the nocturnal, criminal state of mind conjured by capitalism's end times. Teresa's music reflects this sensation of heightened alertness and near-psychedelic intensity with an abstract dramatic narrative implicitly referencing on the one hand, the convention-challenging feminism of Jean Rollin's cinema fantastique and its soundtracks, and the charged atmospheres of Coil, as well as the sexually liberated writings of Amanda Carter and the Marquis De Sade. In its unfairly weighted formation, the album vertiginously drops into freefall with seven minutes of nightmarishly captivating dissonance in "Canticles of Ecstasy", landing in nine minutes of disquietingly lush ambient electronics and Teresa intoning "bestial, brutal" on "Heathen's Gate", marking her descent into night proper. The other side is an entirely different affair. From the wigged-out pipes and cinematic intrigue of "Vulgaire", Teresa plays out stark contrasts between the stellar acid-pop detournement of "For Murder", the palpably eerie electro-acoustic aura of "Apostrophising the Cunt", and a gut-wrenching one-two of Proustian fantasy in "Mother of Death", and the piloerect tristesse of "From so High that I Might Die". Like Cosey Fanni Tutti's seminal early artwork, created in the '70s against a backdrop of Yorkshire-based serial killers and the adult industry, Teresa's music can be taken as a form of psychic self-surgery, as a way of parsing her own ideas from the inherent violence of hetero-normativity and the lingering, insipid pall of Roman Catholicism and all its connotations of sexual repression. And like Cosey, Teresa obliquely acknowledges the female perspective defined in the Tarot card, "Eight of Swords" - she's damned if she does, but also damned if she doesn't. So f*ck it, here it is. Deal with it. Mastered and cut by Matt Colton. Edition of 300.

NIGHTINGALES Perish The Thought LP
LP version in gatefold sleeve,180 gram pressing, includes download. It's unusual for an act to hit its peak after four decades; yet Perish The Thought is evidence to the contrary. The Nightingales have notoriously had a new label for each new album, a fact which might reasonably call for consumer caution, but they don't fit in with anything like a scene, they speak their own musical language, and while they bust out slogans about being "slightly superior to others of their ilk", the truth is, they have no ilk. Faust's Hans-Joachim Irmler adds keyboards and The Lovely Eggs's Holly Blackwell's languid voice features on one song. John Peel noted, "their performances will serve to confirm their excellence when we are far enough distanced from the 1980s to look at the period rationally and other, infinitely better known, bands stand revealed as charlatans". It's doubtful he would have bothered with such a pre-emptive defense if he'd been able to witness the explosive growth of the band during their second incarnation. The Nightingales were formed by vocalist Robert Lloyd, formerly of The Prefects (part of The Clash's "White Riot Tour," John Peel favorites, etc.), and feature Andreas Schmid on bass, former Violet Violet drummer Fliss Kitson, and original Prefect Alan Apperley on guitar. Specially commissioned artwork by the David Yates.

BOOGIE DOWN PRODUCTIONS Criminal Minded 2LP
2018 repress. "In listing the greatest albums in hip-hop history, one title never seems to stray from the upper echelons, no matter how many years pass: Boogie Down Productions' undisputed classic from 1986, Criminal Minded. Released amidst a battle between BDP and MC Shan that would redefine the New York rap landscape as it was then known, the album, which features the songs 'South Bronx,' 'Criminal Minded' and 'The Bridge is Over,' captures the excitement, urgency and raw power that embodies hip-hop culture as we know it, with KRS-One's aggressive yet intelligent lyricism backed by Scott La Rock's hard-hitting, stripped-down beats. A true classic, Criminal Minded has been recognized by Vibe Magazine, The Source and Rolling Stone as one of the most important albums of all time. Traffic Entertainment Group and B-Boy Records are proud to present Criminal Minded, presented in a double-LP pressing."

TERRY I'm Terry (Yellow Vinyl) LP
Repressed on yellow vinyl. "I'm going to set 'Carpe Diem', the first track on Terry's new album I'm Terry as my alarm for the next week and see how that makes me feel. It will be replacing an alternation of 'Werewolves of London' and 'Baby, It's You'. After a week the familiarity might feel kind of insane but kind of nice. Terry is into repetition. Terry often feels like the daily grind set inside a Looney Tune. They can be nasty and violent, but funny at the same time. I laugh at Terry riffs a lot. The lyrics are droll, but have you heard the riffs? It's like they're tickling you. But this is all part of a plan; I would almost say that Terry is highly conceptual, possibly the most conceptual band I've been around. What's really going on here? Why am I listening to jingles and feeling so moved? My favorite songs on I'm Terry -- the band's third record in three years, following on from Terry HQ (UTR 084CD/LP, 2016) and Remember Terry (UTR097CD/LP, 2017) -- are 'Under Reign', sandwiched between other new favorites 'The Whip' and 'Crimes'. There's a theme of dominance and submission here, but unremarkable and ignorable, like knowing you're enslaved by your streaming service but putting that out of your mind for another week. Terry is domesticity; Terry romances the mundane. This is how romance triumphs. That's what Billy Bragg's 'A New England' and Squeeze's 'Up The Junction' do. Terry's suburban escapism moment is 'Ciao Goodbye'; Listen to it on an arterial road under the yellow streetlights of a weeknight. Terry has never been this beautiful, and Terry may never be beautiful again, definitely not on this record. That's what I like about Terry, there are few rules. They seem to make a song out of whatever sounds good to them; they aren't a genre study. Have you noticed the reggae undercurrent in Terry? There is one; Terry are like Steely Dan or 10cc. Both bands make me queasy after a certain point. Terry probably also make me a bit queasy, singing about police beatings and nationalism and all that, but they're not out to hurt you. They're like the kindly bearer of bad news. I'm pretty certain Terry isn't perverse; they're just the harbinger of the encroaching perverse world." --Lee Parker, 2018.

FUKUI, RYO Scenery LP
New "regular edition" on 140 gram vinyl. We Release Jazz (WRWTFWW Records' new sister-label) presents its first release, the official reissue of Ryo Fukui's highly sought-after masterpiece Scenery, originally released in 1976. Unquestionably one of the most important Japanese jazz albums ever recorded, Scenery reveals Ryo Fukui as a miraculously brilliant self-taught pianist fusing modal, bop, and cool jazz influences for a very personal, dexterous, and game-changing take on classic standards made famous by Bing Crosby and John Coltrane among others. From "It Could Happen To You" and its serene and calm intro which magically flows into a jubilant and upbeat piece, to the out-of-this-world piano solo of "Early Summer", or the incredible teamwork of "Autumn Leaves" where Fukui leads Satoshi Denpo (bass) and Yoshinori Fukui (drums) into groove heaven, every single note on the album oozes precision, confidence, and flair and every single section slides seamlessly into one another, creating a supreme and elegant blend of jazz. Often compared to McCoy Tyner or Bill Evans, Ryo Fukui was a genius in his own right, a true master of his craft whose perfectionism gave birth to some of the greatest music ever recorded. Scenery is his magnum opus and an absolute must-have. The Hokkaido wizard-pianist followed Scenery with the soulful gem Mellow Dream (WRJ 002CD/LP/LTD-LP) in 1977. He then focused on improving his live skills, often performing at Sapporo's Slowboat Jazz Club (which he co-founded with his wife Yasuko Fukui) and releasing two live albums. Ryo Fukui sadly passed away in March 2016, leaving behind a legacy of works that is sure to captivate jazz lovers for generations to come. Sourced from the original masters. LP version is mastered at half speed; 140 gram vinyl with sticker.

EP-4 Lingua Franca-1 LP
LP version; in heavy 350 gram sleeve. WRWTFWW Records present the official reissue of cult album Lingua Franca-1 (originally released in 1983) by groundbreaking Kyoto band EP-4. Straight from the delirious minds of unconventional geniuses Kaoru Sato (who had previously released an album as R.N.A. Organism on legendary Osaka label Vanity Records) and Yuji "Banana" Kawashima, Lingua Franca-1 is a seamless voyage of spellbinding mutant funk grooves, joyful post-punk explorations, synth fantasies, sexy distortions, and fluid cool-no-sweat vocals. Constantly mutating in an almost biological way (similarly to Colored Music's self-titled album (1981)), always mysterious and seductive, sometimes reminiscing of a freaky cross between PiL, Liquid Liquid, David Bowie, and Yello, EP-4's debut is hard to label, although "Debonair Wave" could be a legitimate way to describe this Japan's best-kept-secret of an album. Defying the rules wasn't limited to sonic experimentations for band leader Kaoru Sato. To promote Lingua Franca-1, he and his crew plastered gigantic (illegal) billboards all over Shibuya and Harajuku, announcing performances in four different cities on odd hours of the same day (May 5th, 1983). Other of his notable antics included originally sub-titling the album "Death to the Emperor Showa", causing a controversy (which led to censorship and a title-change), trying to release two albums on the same day without the concerned labels being aware of the plan or, in the R.N.A. Organism days, fooling Vanity Records into believing the demo he sent them came from a foreign band (it worked). Unique personality, unique music!
