BELLS INTO MACHINES Bells Into Machines CD
Bells Into Machines is the debut self-titled album for a new band of industrial and rock/metal veterans. Bells Into Machines is Paul Barker (Ministry, Puscifer, Killing Joke), Chris Connelly (Ministry, Revolting Cocks), Lee Popa (Pigface, Ministry, White Zombie), Hoss Wright (Nick Oliveri), Jud), Stephen Bier (Marilyn Manson), Brian Diemar (AM Conspiracy, Pig) and producer legend Toby Wright (Korn, Alice In Chains, Stone Sour). Imagine some of the most seasoned and experienced musicians of the international industrial music scene would meet up and work on an album together. Imagine these veterans would win one of the most established rock and metal producer of our days over to produce and co-write the album. Imagine that band was called Bells Into Machines. The opening track "Your Crime Scene - My Career" has the audacity to take a look back at the industrial scene of the last 30 years, and abolish everything on the way. If one came in contact with industrial music in the last 30 years, it is kinda guaranteed that half of your albums were made by one or multiple people involved in Bells Into Machines; this band covers a unparalleled period between 1980s Wax Trax! Records and today's top bands.

CINTHIE 803 Crystalgrooves 001 12"
Beste Modus, we_r_house, and Unison Wax co-founder Cinthie launches her new imprint Crystalgrooves with three raw house cuts. Leading on the package is the anthemic heavy hitter "Together", a heady house groove fueled by a filtered, funk-infused bass line, bright organ chords and bumpy 909 drums, the result is an emotive slice of peak-time house. "Ada Lovelace" tips the focus over to dusty, swinging drum sounds and an amalgamation of choppy disco string and vocal samples. "No Need To Worry" rounds out the package with murky bass tones, wandering stab sequences, and stripped-back shuffled percussion.

SPILL GOLD Spill Gold Cassette
Cassette Store Day 2018 release. Amsterdam experimental psych-pop group Spill Gold emerged with a heady buzz in 2017, self-releasing a debut fifty-copy cassette EP, Spill Gold that sold out instantly and earned them opening slots for the likes of St. Vincent, Beak, DJ Katapila, and Exploded View. Spill Gold conjure up vivid, spiraling stories with their eerie, persistent songs. From the frenetic steel drum solo on "Mercury", the relentless, post-punk urgency of instrumental "Seven's March", to the snake-charming synths and haunting vocals on "Sirens", you won't be able to get these songs out of your head once you hear them. Propulsive and addictive, this is music meant to be blasted on your car stereo as you drive alone towards an uncertain horizon. Beacon Sound will be releasing an expanded edition of Spill Gold, featuring remixes by members of US Girls and Doomsquad. Spill Gold is the project of Nina de Jong and Rosa Ronsdorf. They worked with American singer Jessica Tucker for Spill Gold, which was recorded and mixed in Ghent by Belgian producer Koen Gisen, and are currently collaborating with multi-instrumentalist Jochem van Tol; expect much more from them in the coming years. Edition of 100 includes download code, insert on recycled paper by Stumptown Printers and Rx Letterpress.

BETA BAND, THE The Beta Band (Deluxe Edition) 2CD
Because Music presents a reissue of The Beta Band's 1999 self-titled debut. Arguably one of the most acclaimed and loved bands of the past 20 years, by both fans and their musical peers alike, The Beta Band formed in St. Andrews, Scotland, in 1996. Innovative and singular, their unique musical and aesthetic approach to everything they did set them far apart from their musical contemporaries. Together for a relatively short period of time, the three albums and three EPs they released between 1996 and 2004 would nonetheless help define them as one of the most exciting and cherished bands of their generation. The Beta Band followed 1998's critically acclaimed compilation The Three E.P.'s (BEC 5543615, 5543616, 5543617, 2018). With high anticipation for The Beta Band, the band originally planned to record the album in four separate continents, but financial constraints slimmed the recording locations down. However, the album was still recorded in a variety of locations and pulling inspiration from sources as diverse as Jamaican reggae, Disney's The Black Hole (1979) and Bonnie Tyler's "Total Eclipse of the Heart". The band also originally intended the album to contain a bonus disc of two long-form ambient pieces, "Happiness and Colour" and "The Hut", both of which lasted over 20 minutes and represented the band's desire to "make a record of sound as a description for something like happiness, where a distinct first part gives way to a distinct second part". However, the band and label ultimately decided to remove these tracks from the original album prior to release; for this edition they have been restored as a bonus disc. Three-panel digisleeve with 24-page stapled booklet.

BARTON, TODD Multum In Parvo CD
Todd Barton honed his craft composing for acoustic instruments - string quartets, small ensembles and orchestras. In the 1970s, he was drawn to emergent synthesizer technologies, because of their abilities to access tones "between" the standard 12 notes of the Western musical scale, and to have the power to craft music out of glitches and unique sonic gestures that are unplayable on acoustic instruments. Multum In Parvo is reflective of this approach; it has a definite and logical flow as a composition, but its content is abstract sound sculpted out of pure energy, something only analog synthesis can offer. Sometimes sparse, sometimes bristling and jumping with detail, Multum In Parvo provides a genuinely multidimensional experience. Like the classic Forbidden Planet (1956) soundtrack, by which Todd was inspired or indeed his collaboration with Ursula K. Le Guin on Music and Poetry of the Kesh (originally released in 1985 and reissued by Freedom To Spend in 2018), Multum In Parvo seems to function as part of some unique sonic ecology, according to its own rules, in its own universe and somewhere just beyond time.

CAMOUFLAGE Voices & Images 2CD
Bureau B present a 30th anniversary reissue of Camouflage's Voices & Images, originally released in 1988. Founded in Bietigheim-Bissingen by Heiko Maile, Oliver Kreyssig, and Marcus Meyn in 1984, Camouflage recorded their first demos in a home-made studio which they set up in the cellar of one of their parents' houses. These early recordings found their way onto a local radio station via a competition which caught the attention of a small publishing company. Ultimately, this led to the band signing a deal with Metronome, a major record label. They scored a hit with their debut single "The Great Commandment", released in the autumn of 1987. Even more astonishing than the #14 spot they reached in the German singles charts was their success across the Atlantic, where a remix version peaked at #1 on the Billboard Dance Club chart. The single topped the charts in countries like Taiwan and Singapore, rightfully claiming its status as a worldwide hit, enhanced by heavy rotation for the song's video on MTV. The debut album Voices & Images followed in March, selling well over half-a-million copies worldwide and becoming a classic in the genre of synth pop. Who would have believed that this trio of school pals could create such an international sound? Moreover, the boost they gave to the genre is nothing short of remarkable. To mark the 30th anniversary of Voices & Images, the album now earns a repackaged, limited edition reissue featuring deleted remixes, rare versions, and B-sides.

KINK Live At Cocoon Ibiza CD
On the occasion of the 19th year of Cocoon's residency on Ibiza, the location may have changed from Amnesia to Pacha, but the enthusiasm for perhaps the most enduring party on the Mediterranean island is guaranteed to continue. Actually, only the sun, sea and wind are more reliable! The celebrated live sets of Bulgaria's livewire Strahil Velchev aka KiNK have been a vital ingredient for the ecstatic nights over the years. With unprecedented regularity, the man from Sofia has been voted best live act by readers of Groove magazine for the last three years, and in 2017 he was also crowned best electronic music producer. As KiNK, together with Sven Väth, he now celebrates one of the most popular evenings of this year's season as well, and what could be more logical than to repurpose the famed Cocoon Ibiza Mix series into another live document of the event? No sooner said than done, here the Bulgarian offers a 70-minute cross-section of his skills. Well-known tracks, especially from Playground (RB 010CD/LP, 2017) meet exclusive, unreleased material in a spontaneous tour de force through the history of electronic dance music. There are distinctive nods to Chicago and Detroit, jazzy organs spiraling into string-drenched skies ("The Russian"), insatiable acid excursions ("Five") and heavy-duty discoid workouts ("Use The Rhythm", "Perth") as KiNK's irresistible nature strikes repeatedly at the heart of the dance floor. The message as always is "gute Laune!" (good vibes), if one is allowed to borrow that sacred phrase for just a moment.

Mine is the second release for the Italian artist Alice Kundalini with her solo project She Spread Sorrow. Also included are bonus tracks from the limited 12" Superunit (1996), presented with meticulous CEDAR mastering by Denis Blackham. On the first disc, Zeni Geva present ultra-heavy Japanese noise rock, with sludgy riffs, thundering feedback, lumbering drums, subhuman bass crawl, and complex noise textures, with Null's trademark vocals and guitar accompanied by Albini's heavy guitar. "Nai-Ha" loosely translates to "broken inside", with the title track relaying the gruesome aftermath of a car accident. The second disc captures Zeni Geva and Albini's live-to-desk tracks from Tokyo & Osaka in 1992. Albini also makes vocal appearances, as well as guitar throughout. All production and mixing by Albini, final mastering by Martin Bowes at Cage Studios in England, and presented here in its complete form for the first time on Cold Spring. It's that time again... Every summer Jennifer Cardini's Correspondant imprint celebrates another ground-breaking year with a far-reaching collection. Ranging from palpitating ambience to juggernaut technoid trips; the stirring 16-track set features late night creations from old friends (Red Axes, Zombies In Miami, Mike Simonetti, Moscoman) new friends (Simple Symmetry, Perel, Julian Stetter), and friends that have been Correspondant kindred spirits since day one, but have never had the opportunity to cast their magic on the label... until now (Black Merlin, MR TC, Yula Kasp & Mi.ro). As always, the vibe is deep, smoldering, emotive, innovative, and unapologetically cosmic as you push headfirst into Correspondant's boundary-less soundscape. From the coiled spring funk of Javi Redondo's "Fictional Friendship" to the hypnotic harmonics and trippy vocal textures of Uriah Klapter's "Breeze" via the slinky arpeggiated charm of Marvin & Guy's "Cowboy Disco", it's another sublime excursion from one of the most consistent and considered imprints on the left side of techno. RESIDENTS, THE Intruders CD
"Shifting from the physical world of train wrecks to the metaphysical realm of imaginary beings, The Residents present Intruders, their new studio album. Inspired by the persistence of obsession, 'Intruders' are seen as alternate beings stalking the corners of our consciousness. The album's original songs all pivot around the unseen and the uncontrollable spirits stuck in the seams of our minds. Whether it's ghosts, angels, aliens, ex-lovers or an angry old woman with a bittersweet smile, we never know who or what will wedge itself into the darker recesses of our minds. Hated, loved, or merely tolerated, we all have Intruders. Featuring familiar Residents collaborators Eric Drew Feldman, Nolan Cook and Carla Fabrizio, alongside remarkable new guests, 'Intruders' is a collection of atmospheric, paranoia-tinged yet oddly accessible tracks, each forever glancing over its own shoulder and wondering just who is out there... Or are they in here? Is this finally, after all these years, The Real Residents?"

KANTARCIOGLU, KORAY Loopworks LP
Originally released by Wounded Wolf Press as a limited cassette in 2016, Loopworks compiles Turkish visual and sound artist Koray Kantarc?o?lu's (b. Ankara 1982) loop-based work composed of samples taken from Turkish records released in '60s and '70s as source material. Loopworks impacts almost instantly mainly because it shows some familiarity with the recent work of Leyland Kirby as The Caretaker, particularly with the "haunted ballroom" effect. Koray explores the usage and the dynamic of these sounds as ambient music for different scenarios as well as the importance of a newfound life with the raw material he used to create these songs. The source material appears as enigmatic as these new sounds and activates a sense of discovery and constant wonder throughout Loopworks. With the vinyl release of Loopworks Discrepant continues to manifest the importance of showing how technology and geography create different and original approaches to the standard western interpretation of field recordings and sound manipulation. Kantarc?o?lu's work here is a strong manifestation of that and how "haunted music" can express a myriad of feelings and sensations. Loopworks has a tremendous vision of the metamorphosis that's been occurring in ambient music during the last decade. Sometimes it's dreamy and calm as aquarium music is ("500606" or "22 47 91 Take 1"); surprising and infinite as "263 Loop", one of the few tracks with a voice, in this case a mysterious and transcendental one; or part of a John Carpenter or David Lynch film yet to be made ("Organ Extract KP 001"). A fantastic voyage, from earth to space, through time or simply as the most beautiful and peaceful dive into the ocean, this is old music transformed into something new and unique; that's special.

VA Greater Jamaica: Moonwalk Reggae/Reggay At Its Best 2CD
"CD debut for the ultra-rare Reggay At Its Best album. Features many of the biggest Jamaican hits from 1969 to 1970. Numerous tracks new to CD. Having established a reputation as one of Jamaica's leading record producers following the release of countless ska and rock steady classics, Arthur 'Duke' Reid effortlessly embraced the new reggae sound that emerged during the tail end of the Sixties. The developing sound was demonstrated on 'Reggay At Its Best', an album produced in limited numbers by Canadian independent, Lanarc Records around the close of 1969. Since its release this predominantly instrumental long player has become a highly prized collector's item that has remained unavailable in any format until now. Soon after the Canadian LP saw issue, London- based reggae giant, Trojan Records released the popular Greater Jamaica Moonwalk Reggae, which brought together a further dozen of Reid's finest works from the period, performed by such luminaries as John Holt, Dave Barker, Justin Hinds and the Ethiopians. These two essential albums now form the basis of this set, which is further bolstered by an incredible 38 bonus tracks, many of which make their CD debut, making this a must for fans of the legendary Duke and the popular boss reggae sound."

LEIGH, HEATHER Throne LP
LP version. On Throne, Heather Leigh takes her place as queen of pedal steel with a suite of heart-rending ballads cauterized with burning riffs. After the rawness of its precursor I Abused Animal (SOMA 023LP, 2015), Throne is a record of late night Americana and heavy femininity; intimate love songs smoked in sensuality. The songs on Throne are woozy, gorgeous and uncomfortable, smothered in thick layers of bass but lifted by multi-tracked vocals. These are rich song forms that stand in contrast to the stripped down steel in her duo with Peter Brotzmann. "Prelude To Goddess" sashays in wearing leopard-print jeans under the twinkling fluorescent illuminations of the British seaside, like Brighton Rock with extra bass. It is followed in by "Lena" -arguably Leigh's "Jolene" - a perverse love song soaked in a subversive sexuality, weighed down with a heavy pulse. "Soft Seasons" is anchored with sunken beats shrouded in wailing, growling steel and an earwormy melody. "Gold Teeth", the longest track on the record, crests and breaks in waves; ecstatic peaks balanced and echoed by melancholic troughs. It soars on an updraft, and from cosmic heights dives seaward into a gnarly and riotous pedal steel breakdown, before catching the breeze again. "Days Without You" and "Scorpio & Androzani" are shorter, intimate songs; in the latter the synths seethe and the steel bows and bends as Leigh's voice falters above a Greek chorus of shadows and reflections. But this isn't autobiography, and Throne departs on "Days Without You", a confrontationally unfinished romantic song, anxious with half-thoughts and missed connections. It glides into the night on stilettos leaving unanswered questions, in a fugue of psychic disturbance and lovesick sensuality. Leigh's artwork (which she photographed and designed) is a visual mirror of the songs on Throne. It is an album of cosmic echoes, abstractions and introspection, of characters and stories that make up Leigh's first best pop record, its melodies and hooks set alight with the fiery core of her unique and distinctive pedal steel. Additional instrumentation by John Hannon (violin, synthesizer) and David Keenan (electric bass). Recorded and engineered by John Hannon, Rayleigh, Essex, March 2018. Photographs and design: Heather Leigh.

On Another Shape Of Psychedelic Music, recorded and mixed in the studio of Causa Sui's Jonas Munk, the band goes even further and lets saxophone burn into the mix. It's a wildfire of ideas that travel far on a smoky haze of cosmic krautrock, stoner, doom, heavy psych, modal jazz and even drifts into Afrobeat. Jonas Munk joins these live sessions on guitar on a few tracks as well, making up a screaming cacophony of three guitars, bass, drums, and saxophone. Aptly titled Another Shape Of Psychedelic Music, this is just not a record of psychedelic music; it's also an album about psychedelic music. The very fabric of psych music seems to materialize in all its shapes and sizes and then vaporize right in front of your ears as the album burns further towards the final groove. Few bands would be able to pull this off, but Mythic Sunship maintain a down-to-earth melted vibe, even at their most ferocious. Making this album good both for zoning out as well as for pure rock catharsis. Groovy.

EMIKA Falling In Love With Sadness CD
Given its years of manifestation behind the scenes of other projects, Falling In Love With Sadness reflects a renewed understanding of Emika's own genealogy, kindred lineage, and its connection to modernity. Marking a drastic departure from the menacing, stripped-down qualities of albums past, Dva (2013) and DREI (EMK 002CD/LP, 2015), Emika has surfaced with a new upwelling of sound gracing the bittersweet, melancholic, and sanguine. With the interplay of myriad genres both rhythmically and melodically intertwining between spacy, dub-tinged "Promises", lush synth pop hooks on "Escape", and the title track's soulful electro, a full spectrum of musicology remains primary to the ever-evolving chroma of Emika's shadowed sound. Further characterized by the breathy sibilance and sultry tones of Emika's noirish, vocal aesthetic, the album navigates through the morose and trappings of misanthropy by illuminating a narrative of emotional resilience and recovery. Co-produced with Robert Witschakowski of The Exaltics, and continuing her collaboration with guitarist Chris Lockington (as heard on DREI and Dva), Falling In Love With Sadness provides a fifth solo album for Emika, but moreover, defines itself as an overture for her future works.

TANGERINE DREAM The Pink Years Albums 1970-1973 4CD
"Esoteric Recordings' Reactive label is pleased to announce the release of a newly re-mastered 4 CD clamshell boxed set which gathers together the first four legendary albums by Tangerine Dream, originally released on the Ohr label in Germany between 1970 and 1973, known by fans as 'The Pink Years' albums. Electronic Meditation was recorded in Berlin in October 1969 and featured the first Tangerine Dream line-up of Edgar Froese (guitars, organ, tapes, sound effects), Klaus Schulze (drums, percussion) and Conrad Schnitzler (cello, violin, typewriter). Upon its release in 1970 the album would define a genre of music and herald the massive creative musical explosion that would emerge in Germany in the early 1970s. Alpha Centauri was recorded at the Dierks studio in Stommeln and featured a line-up of Edgar Froese, Chris Franke and Steve Schroyder with guests Udo Dennebourg (flute) and Roland Pualyck (synthesiser). Released in 1971 the influence of the album was immense, with the band creating imaginative soundscapes previously unheard on record. Zeit, released in August 1972, a double album with one lengthy track per side, was recorded at the Dierks studio once again and featured a guest appearance by Florian Fricke of another legendary ambient German group, Popol Vuh. One of Tangerine Dream's finest early albums, Zeit was enthusiastically championed in the UK by DJ John Peel and was the group's major breakthrough. Atem, released in 1973, was the band's last release on the Ohr label & heralded the beginning of Tangerine Dream's wider international acclaim. Atem enjoyed success outside of Germany and eventually led to the group signing to the newly formed Virgin label later in 1973. This clamshell box of The Pink Years Albums 1970 - 1973 features Electronic Meditation, Alpha Centauri, Zeit, and Atem packaged in replica card sleeves and also includes a poster."

BOGNER, URSULA Recordings 1969-1988 (2018 Remaster) LP
Faitiche is ten years old. October 2008 saw the release of Ursula Bogner - Recordings 1969-1988, for which the label was created. While working as a pharmacist, Ursula Bogner experimented with electronic music, undiscovered, for over three decades. When Jan Jelinek first heard Bogner's work in 2008, he was enthusiastic. The resulting album, compiled by Jelinek from Bogner's extensive oeuvre, is being reissued in a remastered version to mark the label's tenth anniversary. This new version also includes four bonus tracks that were previously only available on a 7" single. Jelinek on the music's initial discovery: "It seems incredible that Bogner's musical talents should have remained undiscovered, but in view of her biography, this might have been inevitable. I met Sebastian Bogner, Ursula's son, on a flight, and the usual small talk led to the topic of his mother, who 'liked to play around with synthesizers', albeit purely on an amateur level. Among her acquaintances, it was considered an eccentric hobby and not paid a great deal of interest. Bogner's life seemed simple and bourgeois to the core: she was a pharmacist, wife and mother. This situation made her obsession with electronic music all the more bizarre - an obsession that saw her build her own home studio. Throughout her early twenties, she followed the activities of Studio für elektronische Musik, attended seminars by Studio founder Herbert Eimert, exhibited enthusiasm for Musique Concrète and later shared her children's enthusiasm for new wave. Nevertheless, Bogner never involved herself in any scene, never made her music public. Her compositions, betray few signs of esotericism; they are closer to studies and sketches, humorous and almost silly, rather than tied to any particular school. Nevertheless, it is remarkably hard to grasp or classify her work as a whole. Over the course of 20 years, she dabbled in many different styles, leading to a bewildering variety of titles. In the late 1960s, Bogner started to record her own music on reel-to-reel tapes. Covering a fairly short period of her creative career, this music conveys a peculiar coherence in both form and content, a coherence that reflects her accessible, rhythmic and sometimes even poppy side. My own preference played a part in the selection process, but a further compilation is already in the works. I hope that listeners will enjoy the same exhilaration I experienced on discovery of Ursula Bogner's music" Gatefold sleeve, includes download.

FREITAS, AMARO Rasif CD
In the sweltering North-Eastern Brazilian state of Pernambuco lies the coastal city of Recife, Amaro Freitas is pioneering the new sound of Brazilian jazz. From the Afro-Brazilian maracatu born on the sugar plantations of slavery, to the high intensity carnival rhythms of frevo and baião, the young pianist's heavily percussive approach to jazz is as indebted to these Pernambuco traditions as it is to Coltrane, Parker, and Monk. As with many of the greats before him, Amaro began playing piano in church aged 12, under the instruction of his father, leader of the church band. He won a place at the prestigious Conservatório Pernambucano de Música but had to drop out as his family could not spare the money for the bus fare. Undeterred, Amaro gigged in bands at weddings and worked in a call center to fund his tuition. The transformative moment came at age 15 when Amaro stumbled across a DVD of Chick Corea concert. Despite not actually owning a piano, Amaro devoted himself to studying day and night. By the age of 22 Amaro was one of the most sought-after musicians in Recife and resident pianist at the legendary jazz bar, Mingus. He met and begun collaborating with bassist Jean Elton and the found drummer Hugo Medeiros. The Amaro Freitas Trio was born. "I want to show the simplicity of music, to break the stigma that the piano is for a particular social class." Following his critically acclaimed debut album Sangue Negro ("Black Blood"), the title of his sophomore release Rasif is a colloquial spelling of Amaro's home town. A love letter to his native northeast, Amaro explores its traditional rhythms through the jazz idiom, employing complex mathematical patterns reminiscent of some of the most challenging works by fellow Brazilian masters Hermeto Pascoal, Egberto Gismonti, and Moacir Santos. "Dona Eni" is a scorching reconstruction of the baião rhythmic structure, played in seven measures instead of two. Title track "Rasif" is a serene homage to the coastal reef and its ecosystems. "Aurora" is a suite of three parts, representing the sun's journey from the light and soft of the rise. Personnel: Amaro Freitas - piano; Hugo Medeiros - drums and percussion; Jean Elton - double bass; Henrique Albino - baritone sax, flutes, and clarinet. LP version comes on 180 gram vinyl; includes download code.

CHADBOURNE, EUGENE Solo Guitar Volume 1-1/3 LP
"Eugene Chadbourne is one of the great guitar players of the modern era. At the time he began recording in Canada in 1975, his music was a unique syncretic formulation. While its most obvious component was free improvisation in a style then most widely associated with English and European players, his music also contained elements of jazz, country, folk, blues, psychedelic and international sounds, referencing these threads in ways that were so diverse and intensely personalized it would take scholars decades to decode them. Volume 1-1/3 is the first of four LPs devoted to documenting some of the music Dr. Chadbourne was creating during the years he was based in the provinces of Canada, while avoiding the constrictive powers of Richard Nixon and his ilk. Exact details of the recordings are moot, but that's trivial. The music on this record is a joyous celebration of traditions of liberation, using approaches that range from the ridiculous to the sublime. But regardless of the humor level (which can be very high at times), the quality of the musicianship and the originality of Chadbourne's compositional theories is staggering. Today there are charts and maps that can lead anyone into and out of the conceptual jungles Eugene was exploring. In the mid '70s, when these tracks were laid down, this was all terra incognita. While still in his early '20s, the Doc was figuring all this shit out for himself. And doing so at a level that can still make your jaw drop. Today Chadbourne continues making some of the most exciting music on the planet, but these examples of his early work should serve as a challenge to many musicians who would like to imagine they're doing something new. That they're also a total gas to hear is just gravy. Delicious, hot and very juicy." --Byron Coley

MCNAMARA, LAURI Knobby Knoll LP
"Lauri McNamara is one of the crazies who make the New England sub-underground such a richly interesting universe to inhabit. She worked off and on with the late, lamented Egg, Eggs, but her main focus has always been on solo performance, accompanying herself on ukelele. A few other people make their presence felt on her debut LP, Knobby Knoll, but let's not get bogged down in their details. 'Cause really, this is Lauri's show, no matter who else might be sitting in. Unlike the many idiots who play uke, emphasizing its child-like qualities, Lauri handles the little axe like an adult. In her hands the instrument is just a guitar with a more compressed palette. And one gets the impression that what some people would view as the limitations of the instrument are appreciated by McNamara for their inherent intimacy. Knobby Knoll is nothing if not an intimate experience. The lyrics are filled with Lauri sharing aspects of her persona, alternately affectionate and judgmental, but always melodic. Many artists who inhabit similarly idiosyncratic creative space eschew compositional beauty as a necessary element, but Ms. McNamara has a very dab hand creating hooks inside a context where they seem almost anomalous. In many ways, the songs here resemble classic 'parlor music' of the late 19th century. For a moment, it can almost make you forget we live in the age of Trump. What a gift!" --Byron Coley, 2018 Edition of 200.

GORDON, PETER Eighteen LP
New York Downtown producer/composer Peter Gordon returns with Eighteen, his first album in three years. Gordon on Eighteen: "Eighteen: the year of release, 2018. Eighteen: the age at which I first used a synthesizer. In creating Eighteen I worked independently in the studio, building up tracks with synthesizers and found sounds. After working with the tracks for several months, I shared them with some musicians, who added instrumental layers, sharing a similar working process in our personal recording spaces. The musicians are: Gabe Gurnsey (drums) of Factory Floor, Larry Saltzman, (guitar) known for his work with Arthur Russell and in demand by acts such as Simon and Garfunkel, Paul Nowinski's (bass) credits include Les Paul, Matt Mottel, (electric piano), is half of Talibam!, while Lewin Barringer (guitar), is a producer in Philadelphia. After mixing the final tracks, I brought the mixes to Berlin. There I worked with engineer Mike Grinser who helped to give the album a unified sound. I think of this album as electronic music. It was created in my home studio, using analog and digital synthesizers, found sounds, and instrumental parts contributed by friends. Finely crafted melodies and harmonies are set against subway noises, street construction, and distant foghorns. Deliberateness paired with randomness: this is what guided the artistic process. My father was a radio journalist so the reel-to-reel tape recorder was a ubiquitous presence growing up. From an early age, I experimented with the tape machine: recording, overdubbing and splicing tape, but electronic music was on my radar as well. My first exposure to an actual synthesizer came when I recorded my first single at the fabled Sound City Studio in Van Nuys, CA. The studio had a custom Neve board, but it also had a Moog modular synthesizer. I asked and they kindly let me experiment with it. Soon, I enrolled at the University of California, San Diego after I discovered they had separate studios for their Moog and Buchla systems. These large modular synthesizers were affordable then only by institutions and rock stars. But these would be soon eclipsed by smaller, cheaper synths in the '70s and early '80s in the same way recording studio technology became accessible in the '90s. Thus, the personal computer and digital audio allowed studio quality production in the home studio; electronic music had become democratized. Handmade music by way of digital technology; this is the music of Eighteen."

KLEISTWAHR Acceptance Is Not Respect CD
Ramleh's Gary Mundy has been rather prolific in recent years with his solo Kleistwahr project. As with his main concern, there's a deep-seated interest in pushing the parameters where certain sonics can fall into a seismic vortex of sheer overload yet remain tethered to a knowing sensibility where greater power can be derived from simply holding back. Since the incredible This World Is Not My Home album in 2014 Kleistwahr has embarked on a single-handed mission to not only take such possibilities as far as possible, but also reach inwards and rip out its core being in order to further attempt to make sense of its doubtlessly tarnished place in the universe. Although in and of itself often tempered to the point restraint assumes new, often disturbed (and disturbing) psychedelic or even filmic, properties, this music arrives like a spitting and foaming scream into the insanity of the void and the myriad challenges and questions it inexorably keeps hurling at us. Kleistwahr is akin to one man having scaled a great height poking out of an infinite chasm and wondering why he bothered.

SISTERS LOVE, THE With Love LP
"Motown's First Ladies of Funk finally release their vinyl debut, some 45 years after it was originally scheduled! As the '70s dawned and Motown relocated to the West Coast, the era of their honey-toned '60s girl groups came to a resounding halt. The Sisters Love were the antithesis of the traditional Motown group and came to the label from A&M, armed with a lot of funk, sass and attitude. Paired with some of Motown's finest writers and producers - Hal Davis, Gloria Jones, Pamela Sawyer, Paul Riser and Willie Hutch - they got off to a rousing start with the gritty 'Mr. Fix-It Man' and went into high gear for the UK only release 'I'm Learning To Trust My Man'. Motown had them playing arenas with The Jackson Five (probably not their smartest move!), issued the odd single and scheduled more but Sisters Love's anticipated breakthrough didn't happen. In 1980 New York DJ Danny Krivit pressed up an extended eight-minute re-edit of 'Give Me Your Love', an old B-side from a 1973 single! That song was somewhat of an underground classic but the Krivit mix brought in a whole new legion of fans amongst the rare groove crowd, both in the US and the UK. Sisters Love had long been rumored to have recorded a complete album for the Motown subsidiary MoWest. Get On Down Records combed the vaults with Motown's help and the result is the original 10 cut album, plus a bonus cut, 'Give Me Your Love.' Although Gwen Berry passed away some years ago, the other three members of the group - Jeanie Long, Lillie Fort and Vermettya Royster have all been actively involved in this release."

A-SUN AMISSA You Stood Up For Victory, We Stood Up For Less CD
A-Sun Amissa is a project formed out of Leeds, UK in 2011 by members of Glissando and The Rustle Of The Stars. Built on the foundations of the unknown, a project that encompasses minimalist drones, modern-classical movements and avant-garde tendencies. Richard Knox (Glissando, The Rustle Of The Stars, Of Thread & Mist) and Angela Chan (Glissando, The Rustle Of The Stars, Ten, Tomorrow We Sail) began forming the initial ideas in the Autumn of 2011, moving away from the piano-led ambience of previous outputs. You Stood Up for Victory, We Stood Up for Less sees A-Sun Amissa moving in a more dense direction, the drones are heavier, the sound thicker and with the added bass-clarinet of Gareth Davis, there is a new, slightly darker jazz element to the music. The two tracks were conceived initially as two drone guitar pieces -- following that, work was done on the composition and atmosphere of the tracks, adding the bass-clarinet, viola, vocals, field recordings and piano. The finished works produce an unsettling but hypnotic listen, with melodies moving in and out of the mix throughout these two pieces. Limited edition of 175 individually numbered, hand-printed copies.

BIXIGA 70 Quebra Cabeca CD
São Paulo's acclaimed ten-piece instrumental collective return for their fourth album, Quebra Cabeça. Urban Afro-Brazilian grooves, empowered horn-driven melodicism, and massive dancefloor inspiration. One of South America's most exhilarating musical propositions. Almost four centuries after the first slave ships loaded their cargoes and set sail, the connection between Brazil and West Africa remains firm and deep. Africa is everywhere in Brazil, and it pulses through the music on Quebra Cabeça ("Puzzle"), Bixiga 70's second studio album for Glitterbeat, where two continents dance together across the black Atlantic. Bixiga 70 have created hybrid in their music --with each member pulling from candomblé (the African-Caribbean religion), jazz, reggae, dub -- and each influence takes on a slightly different form. On Quebra Cabeça, that sound becomes more complex. That's apparent in the shifts and turns of a piece like "Pedra De Raio" or "Levante", where the melody shifts and swerves, one section flowing naturally into the next, adding layer upon layer to create something astonishing and utterly satisfying in its power. In large part, this change has come from the band's relentless touring over the last few years. "We've been exposed to so much," flutist Cuca Ferreira notes. "So many of the people we've played with have had an impact on us, like Pat Thomas, the Ghanaian highlife singer or [Nigerian saxophonist] Orlando Julius. And then we toured and recorded with João Donato . . . We've learned from them all, they've made us think about what we can do with our music." One result is the new, shining lyricism of the melodies, with the horns pushed even more to the fore, parading around with a singer's swagger. Quebra Cabeça is a very memorable set of hummable earworms, from the title cut that opens up the album and continuing, sinewy and cool and relentless, all the way to the final note of "Portal". Throughout though, the heartbeat of everything remains utterly African, refracted through the prism of the band's home in the Bixiga neighborhood of São Paulo. Bixiga 70 has always been a reflection of the streets where they live. The band played their first show in October 2010 and released their debut album a year later. Eight years on they are still the same ten-piece collective, honing and shaping the music, evolving towards the changes found on Quebra Cabeça.

FACTORY FLOOR A Soundtrack For A Film 2CD
Factory Floor was originally commissioned by curator Chris Bell of London's Science Museum to write a live score for Fritz Lang's 1927 silent cinematic landmark, Metropolis. Widely regarded as a pioneering work of science fiction, Metropolis depicts a dystopian future where a city's downtrodden, exploited underclass of workers secretly plot a revolt. The 150-minute brand new score was first performed at the Science Museum's IMAX on April 28th 2017, coinciding with the 90th anniversary release of Metropolis and as part of the acclaimed Robots exhibition and event series. Following the success of the London Science Museum event, Factory Floor took to the studio to record the score in its entirety. Mixed by Nik Void, except for "Heart Of Data" and "Babel" which were mixed by award-winning producer Marta Salogni. The box set includes the entire 2.5 hours of the reimagined score on four 12" records. RAINFOREST SPIRITUAL ENSLAVEMENT Red Ants Genesis 2LP
Low Jack and Equiknoxx join Dominick Fernow's Rainforest Spiritual Enslavement on a new double vinyl expansion of Red Ants Genesis, originally issued on limited cassette in 2018. Recorded in winter 2017, Red Ants Genesis finds the Hospital Productions boss discovering strength in collaboration following the triumph of his classic Ambient Black Magic (HOS 498CD/LP, 2017), which was conjured with the crucial assistance of Juan Mendez aka Silent Servant. Here, he works with Phillippe Hallais aka Low Jack and of Editions Gravats, who also tags in his pals Gavsborg and Time Cow from Jamaican digidub futurists Equiknoxx for a killer new version of the title track. On the tape's original four tracks, Low Jack transmogrifies Fernow's high volume microphone recordings of synthetic field ecologies with masterful sleight of hand in-the-edits, resulting in a hyperreal detachment and realignment of spatial proprioceptions executed with exquisite textural tactility. It's far more oblique and desiccated than the relatively lush Ambient Black Magic outing, rendering the stark durational immersion of their 30 minute "Red Ants (Mics)" split over the first disc, while Low Jack's percussive edits really come into play on the utterly gutted "Shields Ferns / Brown Pine Magic" and the slow, febrile push of "Papua Land (Live Edit)." No doubt one of the biggest attractions here is the curveball of an Equiknoxx remix of "Red Ants Genesis". Surely one of the first meetings of Jamaican dancehall and dark ambient in existence, it's a spellbinding piece of dub physics that demonstrates the endless, mutable imagination of Gavsborg and Time Cow in haunting and deeply mystic effect. Unmissable. Cut at Dubplates & Mastering, Berlin.

MORELLI, RON Disappearer 2LP
The Disappearer story is an abstract and conflicted one, loosely based around moral codes handed down through generations, reinterpreted, debated and enforced, followed and broken. What happens when a threat is posed? Is the answer diluted to the simple fact of survival by any and all means necessary? Does instinct take precedence over all? This cycle is full of contradiction, feeding back in its most primitive animalistic and oft brutal of levels, with many questions left unanswered. Who becomes the disappeared and who becomes the disappearer? Two years since his last releases for Hospital Productions -- A Gathering Together (HOS 477CD/LP, 2015) -- L.I.E.S. Records boss Ron Morelli returns with Disappearer, his third full-length. Disappearer claws and tears its way through 13 tracks at 54 minutes long, touching upon everything from cold, stripped-back electronics, to hints of 1990s Hague scum techno, to grim passages reminiscent of early tape minimalists, the amalgamation forming a nasty sonic narrative that reaches an explosive unsettling apex. This is a definitive return to tense, urgent punk roots; the minimal beat construction, unexpected acid burned vocals, and stark atmospheres touch upon Morelli's full spectrum of influences with his signature rusted razor production. Composed over the last two years in various foul states, the album is a fusion of base level hardware programming, open room mic recordings and extensive computer processing, all finalized in the Paris studio of Krikor Kouchian. Compositionally, Morelli has fused the brute immediacy of his then-controversial now-cult debut album Spit (HOS 407 CD/LP, 2012) with intricate compositional cut-ups of cassette culture, the updated crushing production the product of having circled and lived Europe's nightclub circuit for close to a decade. Presented here as a double LP with new artwork, re-sequenced and edited from its original cassette format.

BLINTCH, N'DRAMAN Cosmic Sounds LP
Hot Mule & Secousse presents a reissue of N'Draman Blintch's Cosmic Sounds, originally issued in 1980. Tired of reading the words 'classic', 'masterpiece', 'missing link', 'cult', in every press release? Just trust Hot Mule & Secousse on this one; there is no choice but to use those words and urge you to (re)discover one of the ultimate Afro-disco lost classics. How could such a masterpiece stay in obscurity for so long? Well, no one knows where N'Draman is. He's presumed dead, and so is Mr Patrick, the label owner, an ex-football player who turned his focus into fashion after suffering a career ending injury. Selling jeans from an outlet in Monrovia (Liberia), he only ventured in the music business for a short period of time, releasing a handful of incredible albums on his Cosmic Sounds imprint. The word on the street was that Nigerian legend William Onyeabor was somehow involved with the production of the album, or maybe playing synths on it. Both were inaccurate, although N'Draman Blintch's previous and first record Cikamele (1979), was indeed recorded at Willfilms, Onyeabor's studio. And some of the musicians playing here were also key members in his pool of session musicians. Cosmic Sounds is many things: psychedelic, politically engaged, funky to death, full of synths, with artwork to die for, a perfect crossover of African and western culture: music for the body and soul, cosmic disco before the genre even existed. Did DJ Danielle Baldelli hear it? Was it ever played by Larry Levan or David Mancuso? In a pre-Internet era, it's unlikely but not impossible. Hot Mule & Secousse are honored to release this gem and have treated the task with utmost respect: both artwork and audio were restored by specialists, and liner notes were written by Temitope Kogbe, Afro-funk expert who runs the Odion Livingston label, founded with legendary producer Odion Iruoje. 38 years after its original release, the world is finally ready to hear Cosmic Sounds in all its glory. Following her debut album Penelope One for Optimo Music (OMLP 011LP, 2017), antipodean vocalist, musician, and soundscaper Penelope Trappes presents sophomore long player Penelope Two, for Houndstooth. Elements from multiple sources are subsumed by Trappes's sonic presence; one hears Badalamenti and Julee Criuse's work for Blue Velvet (1986) and Twin Peaks, Galaxie 500 and Slowdive's dreampop, the scorched comedowns of early Primal Scream, Tuxedomoon and Colin Newman's dark melancholia, plus contemporaries like Grouper, Tropic Of Cancer, and Sky H1. A deeply melodic record, with her intimate, maternally-tender voice floating in the middle of each three-dimensional, womb-like sonic space. Originally from Byron Bay Australia before moving to New York, meeting partner Stephen and developing experimental electronic projects Locke and Priscilla Sharp, prior to their best-know incarnation The Golden Filter. VULLIAMY, ABY Spin Cycle LP
LP version. "'I find it tedious that, in music, we usually only see one type of love represented,' says Yorkshire composer, musician, and music therapist Aby Vulliamy. 'I'm not interested in writing about that.' Spin Cycle, Vulliamy's debut album, is indeed an album about love: love at its most transformative, love at its most dreary, love at its most challenging, love at its most desperate. It is, to quote the writer who has found her voice in these songs, an album about 'love, life and the reality of parenthood -- not just the pink and fluffy bits.' 'For years, I thought of myself as a purely social musician who couldn't self-generate -- that my strength was in taking what someone else had put out there, and adding to it,' explains Vulliamy. 'That's the role of the viola: you don't notice that we're there until we screw up.' 'It's only since having had my daughters that I've been able to put words to music. Motherhood turned my life upside down and suddenly, sitting there in the dark, the words just flowed.' The result is both intimate and visceral, full of snatched moments and vivid imagery. Opening track 'Spin Cycle' effectively captures domestic drudgery in four lines, performed in the round. 'Rock Me Tender' is an evocative portrayal of the lonely, quiet, sleep-deprived terror of a breastfeeding mother. The frantic, furious 'Good Enough' delivers a jarring, atonal riposte to society's judgment of women, mothers or not, once they reach childbearing age while 'This Precious Time' acts as the album's heart as Vulliamy's layered vocals, backed by rich, mournful trombone and double bass, at once lament and celebrate the inevitable growth of her children from infants to little women. Vulliamy credits long-time collaborator Stevie Jones (Sound of Yell) with 'making the album happen' -- by encouraging her to properly document material she had only ever considered performing live, but also in the more practical sense of engineering, producing and mixing the tracks over a period of four years at Glasgow's Chem19 and Kinning Park Complex studios. Work and child-rearing made recording time scattered and precious, making Vulliamy keen to acknowledge the roles played by her musician partner George Murray, whose trombone contributions appear on the album, and Jones' partner Jill Wilson in giving the album space to come together. Bill Wells (melodica), Fritz Welsh (percussion) and Christina Rhys (harp) also appear." --Lisa-Marie Ferla

MEDITATION TUNNEL Glittering Jewel 12"
The Rapture's Luke Jenner ventures firmly into the dance floor, this time in full force, on Glittering Jewel, the Brooklyn-based producer's debut under his Meditation Tunnel guise. Following his initial outing, La La La (LADBLZ 002EP, 2018), on Life and Death's vinyl-only sub-label, Blitz Series, Glittering Jewel sees Jenner step up with three outsider cuts, dripping in personality. While dilapidated drum machines, crunched beyond recognition, propel the record into techno territory, Glimmering Jewel retains the artist's bespoke youthful sense of blue-eyed naiveté, with Red Axes coming through with an unclassifiable, stripped-down reinterpretation of "Fire Fly".

FOREST DRIVE WEST Apparitions 2x12"
Livity Sound continues to be one of the most innovative labels of its era with another essential release, this time in the form of a debut long player from Forest Drive West. This extended double 12", Apparitions is a fascinating further development of the producer's intricate fusions of techno, dub and jungle. The acclaimed UK artist has released two EPs (Jinx/Scanners, LIVITY 022EP, 2017 and Static/Escape, LIVITY 028EP, 2017) on the label before now, as well as on its sister label dnuoS ytiviL and the likes of Hidden Hawaii, Appian Sound, and London drum-n-bass outlet Rupture. Little is known about the London-based producer, but in just a couple of years he has established his own unique blend of complex rhythms and tactile sound design, distilling a rich history of UK musical influences into fresh new forms. This record continues in that tradition with a mix of sparse rhythm tracks that contrast heavyweight drum programming with rich and deft sound design. From menacing and mysterious, to cinematic and hypnotic, it makes for a compelling and immersive experience; Apparitions is a landmark release for one of the UK's most exciting new producers.

HYCENTTO JUNIOR Mama Groove (Bonus Edition) LP
Lorem Ipsum present a reissue of Hycentto Junior's Mama Groove, originally issued in 1991. In the '80s, a Nigerian DJ named Hycentto Junior was notorious for making Onitsha people dance on his grooves. Soon, influenced by U.S hip-hop artists, he began rapping on top of the music he played. His eccentric style drew the attention of the biggest names, and the famous Nkono Teles decided to work with him on his next album, Mama Groove. Their project was released in 1991. Due to unfortunate circumstances, the number of copies available was really low, making it very hard to find. More than 25 years later, working for a motor company, Hycentto met online with French music passionate collective Lorem Ipsum, that had randomly found Mama Groove. The result is a reissue combining all the 1991 Mama Groove tracks and two bonuses selected from his first album, At A Party Last Night (1984). The unique variety of sounds and genres, covering electro hip-hop, digi-reggae and disco-funk, will carry from poolside to late night dancefloors.

"Beneath their remarkable albums Logbook (2000) and Guestbook (2003) Solar Moon (aka Solar Moon System) is well known by the intensive co-operations with electronic legendary pioneer Klaus Schulze. These co-operations brought us, beneath others, the extraordinary Klaus Schulze & Solar Moon album Ultimate Docking. The long-and-winding-road story of Solar Moon now goes into its 25th year, at last continuing with a new chapter... which in reality turns out to be another book. Following up on their Y2K release Logbook (a summary of their early works morphing from a rock band into a soundsystem collective, released through German electronic pioneer Klaus Schulze's artist label Rainhorse Records back then) and Guestbook (dating from 2003 and featuring a.o. Mannequin Records presents Le Syndicat Électronique a self-titled double LP retrospective compilation of the French electro-wave pioneer. Le Syndicat Électronique is the historical electro-wave project of Alaxis Andreas G., founder of the seminal Invasion Planète Recordings. Invasion Planète was the first French minimal electro-wave/experimental label founded in late 1998 by the insurance proceeds of a car crash. Heavily influenced by the work of masters like Kraftwerk, John Carpenter, and Front 242, Alaxis Andreas G. is responsible for many others' dark electronic/industrial/neo-folk projects to name a few: A//, Bruta Non Calculant, Swesor Brother, La Séduction Des Innocents, It & My Computer, and Eva VIII. After many years of supporting his artistic vision and direction, we decided it was time to collaborate together in this killer compilation, which includes five historic tracks never pressed on vinyl, while three more are being released for the first time ever.

DENA If It's Written LP
"If it's written in the stars", says a Bulgarian proverb. "Last year, every conversation I had ended with this sentence", Dena explains, "before I had the album, I already had the title. It's about believing and trusting in universal connections, trusting that everything will fall into place, eventually." And all has indeed fallen into place: Four years after her début Flash (2014), If It's Written marks a new chapter in Dena's musical and personal development. The product of major transformations in her life and work, If It's Written is the work of a grown-up woman who has taken matters into her own hands. The record is a celebration of individuality and independence, for the first time Dena has taken over producing the majority of the tracks herself. "For me, this is major progress", she says, "from writing the first song for this album to this point, it's been such a journey." It took two different versions and four mixes, but now that circle came to a closing and If It's Written is ready to be released unto the world. Inviting friends to collaborate on her very own terms, Dena created her own universe: features include the laid back "So Wrong", a duet with Canadian indie-crooner par excellence Sean Nicholas Savage, or the serene "Things That Mean A Lot", recorded with Filipino cool cats Eyedress and Rhxanders, beautifully describing the emptiness just before a relationship falls apart. Other guests include Berlin-based Argentinian singer Pictorial Candi on the outro "If It's Written" or longtime collaborator and friend Erlend Øye on the minimal and bone-dry "Speculations". The music scene of Berlin's infamous Neukölln district was highly influential for Dena: "It was so inspiring to be surrounded by all this DIY-spirit". This has left its mark on If It's Written, which she calls her "laptop-album", as she often sang directly into the computer microphone while producing the songs. No grand set-ups needed, just her, her ideas, and trust in her own plan. Fittingly, telecommunication, computers, smartphones, and all those gadgets were not only tools to produce the songs on If It's Written, but also a major theme in Dena's writing. "We're all woven into one big text message", she muses, "the album is about us and communication." Includes download code.

STOP MOTION ORCHESTRA Lightworks CD
Megaphone and Knock'em Dead Records present the long-awaited second album by Austin, Texas based Stop Motion Orchestra. On Lightworks, the group draws on influences ranging from Henry Cow, Magma, Haniwa-Chan, and Picchio Dal Pozzo, to traditional music from Eastern Europe and South Asia. While the musicians who appear on Lightworks have extensive resumés in Austin's progressive and experimental scenes, the collective voice that emerges across the five instrumental works transcends both scene and genre, revealing a close-knit telepathic unit at the height of their powers. The tracks deliver thunderous juxtapositions of style in the spirit of the "rock in opposition" movement: Eastern folk melodies played on sax and violin are interlaced with synthesized bass lines and layered electric and acoustic guitars; meticulous notation is balanced by a raw, DIY aesthetic that emphasizes texture, and atmosphere; ancient myths are given a new soundtrack for the 21st century.

'I wanted it to sound as if Depeche Mode hired J. Dilla and DJ Premier to drop loops while Frank Zappa produced, and then I came in and shit all over it,' said Jimmy. Now living in New Zealand full time ('the most awesome country in the world'), Jimmy shares his innermost musical insights through sixteen songs, two covers (Kate Bush's 'Wuthering Heights' and The Doobie Brothers classic 'What A Fool Believes') four guest stars and one Jimmy. Damn he is really hyping up this record -- it better be good! He continues, 'I was having fun exploring my brain and I wanted to invite my friends to have fun with me immersing myself in another time and space, bit by bit, gaining its form from my daily life into a surreal stream of consciousness.' From trigger warnings to Martin Niemöller quotes, from reading himself to boasting and testing, from touring the world to alcohol poisoning, from kissing your mother to dismissing his entire career, this two-year adventure is a mindfuck of Jimmy's escapist reality. 'Mathematically speaking I am breaking time into pieces of distance and moving through them diagonally at a rapid rate, says Jimmy. 'Naaaahh, I am just fucking with you. LEACH, MARY JANE Flute Songs LP
For Mary Jane Leach's Flute Songs, Modern Love is honored to bring together four pieces composed for flute and voice, spanning a period of over 30 years and triggered by a fascination with sound and performance. As Leach explains, "In the late 1970s I was practicing playing and singing with tapes that I had made of myself performing long sustained tones. It had started out as an exercise in intonation, and ended up with a fascination for sound phenomena: difference, combination, and interference tones. The first piece I wrote for an instrument that I couldn't play was Trio For Duo (1985), for live and taped alto flute and voice. I had noticed that my voice matched the sound of the bottom fifth of the alto flute, and so the voice in this piece is sung to sound as much like an alto flute as possible. By using glissandos, more 'extra-notated' sounds are created than appear on the page. Bruckstück (1989) was originally written for eight sopranos, but is played on flutes on this recording, using the same pitches, but sounding very different. The piece is polyphonic, with a lot of closely resolving intervals; primarily major and minor seconds. I initially wrote Dowland's Tears (2011) for nine flutes, thinking of it as a recording project and not a concert piece (it now has a 'solo' tenth part added), while Semper Dolens (2018) is for solo and six taped flutes, with sustained harmony and dissonance in mind". These four recordings feature noted Roman flutist Manuel Zurria, who has worked with some of the most important composers around the world. In 1990 he founded Alter Ego, a leading group for contemporary music in Italy. Numerous composers have written pieces for him, and he has expanded the repertoire even further by re-orchestrating compositions into pieces for multiple flutes, as heard on almost forty albums. Mary Jane Leach has played an instrumental role in NYC's pioneering Downtown avant-garde community since the 1970s, working alongside peers including Arthur Russell, Ellen Fullman, Peter Zummo, Philip Corner, and Arnold Dreyblatt, as well as devoting years to the preservation of Julius Eastman's legacy since his death in 1990. Her vinyl debut Pipe Dreams was issued via the Blume imprint (BLUME 011LP, 2017). Mastered and cut by Matt Colton.

PFLUGER, ANDREAS Works for Violin and Piano CD
Between 1989 and 2013, Swiss composer Andreas Pflüger composed a series of works for violin and piano that are highly divergent in style. These works are brought together in this recording and range from a virtuoso piece "... Steine ... (Stones)", which exhausts virtually all possibilities of violin playing, to the "Sonata 1993", in which the composer applies the sonata form in direct and pure tonal language, and also includes his most recent work, "Fünf Stücke (Five Pieces)" for two violins and piano. In each of them, complex musical sequences develop from motivic cells, or "nuclei" in a certain sense. Several of the works on this CD are dedicated to violinist Katharina Schamböck, who recorded them here.Born in Basel in 1941, Andreas Pflüger made a name for himself internationally not least as a composer for the stage (with seven operas and two ballets), although he has also composed numerous works for orchestra and chamber music ensembles, as well as about 120 film scores. He has been invited as a composer and guest lecturer to many European countries, Japan, South America, and the US.

The premiere of "hängende gärten (hanging gardens)" for large orchestra followed in Berlin in the summer of 2017. The title refers to one of the Seven Wonders of the World: the legendary Hanging Gardens of Babylon of Assyrian Queen Semiramis. The long-anticipated premiere of Wolfgang Rihm's Requiem-Strophen (Requiem Verses) in March of 2017 was also a special debut, that of Mariss Jansons, principal conductor of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, conducting his orchestra for the first time at the musica viva concert series. The live recording of this concert is being released as a co-production with BR Klassik, musica viva and NEOS. Rihm extends the liturgical Requiem text with, among others, three sonnets by Michelangelo and verses by Hans Sahl. Tradition is of considerable significance to Rihm, but in the sense of assimilating it, advancing it, and developing it. In this sense, Rihm's Requiem-Strophen are a highly personal approach to the Requiem genre by one of the most influential composers of our times. VON REUSNER, CLEMENS Electroacoustic Works CD/SACD
Clemens von Reusner creates acousmatic worlds in which natural and synthetic objects exist side by side. He uses different programs that make free work possible in the realm of sounds, where samples, synthesis and resynthesis work together, develop accelerate and slow each other down, always with great determination. He works with sounds that he disjects, puts back together and places in rooms out of which they flow or into which they grow. "Anamorphosis", "Definierte Lastbedingung", "KRIT"m and "Topos Concrete" are genuine eight-channel productions. Attention to compositional sense and sonic transparency is always maintained in the stereo versions, even though the ambiance of the sound movements achieved by the ambisonic procedure only opens up completely in the five-channel versions of the SACD, and especially in the eight-channel concert version. "HO", "Dry Friction", and "Sphären der Untätigkeit" are originally mixed in two channel stereo. The SACD multichannel layer therefore also features these mixes in two channel stereo.

RADULESCU, HORATIU Hommage a Horajiu Radulescu: Complete Works For Piano 3CD/SACD
On the tenth anniversary of Hora?iu R?dulescu's death on September 25th 2018, NEOS present a comprehensive document of a wonderful artistic friendship will be released: the complete recording of R?dulescu's piano music, featuring the pianist Ortwin Stürmer. Hora?iu R?dulescu, born in Bucharest on January 7th, lived in French exile from 1969 and became one of the leading exponents of spectralism; nonetheless, his music also has unmistakable roots in his home country of Romania. He was considered a sonic magician, a "philosopher of sound". One of his decisive encounters, in 1990, was with Ortwin Stürmer; it was for him that R?dulescu composed the second, third, and fourth of the Zen-inspired Lao tzu Sonatas, as well as the large-scale piano concerto "The Quest". It would have been wrong not to include the latter in this SACD box set -- with the same musicians as the premiere, the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Lother Zagrosek.

RUZICKA, PETER Clouds 2 / Possible-A-Chaque-Instant (String Quartet No. 7) CD/SACD
Peter Ruzicka has made a tremendous impact on the world of music for decades, not only as a general director (among others, at the Salzburg Festival, Hamburg State Opera and the Munich Biennale) but also as a high demand internationally as a conductor and composer. On July 3, 2018 Peter Ruzicka celebrated his 70th birthday. This CD, the seventh featuring his music in the NEO catalog, is being released to honor this occasion. The Minguet Quartet won the 2010 ECHO Klassik Award for its complete recording of string quartets by Ruzicka (Nos. 1-6 at the time). This CD is a logical and perhaps necessary continuation of the series: In addition to String Quartet No. 7 -- which, at over 40 minutes in length is far more extensive than its predecessors -- it includes "CLOUDS 2" for string quartet and orchestra conducted by the composer. Ruzicka says that in this work he was guided by the image of music that is searching for a sound which he has never himself heard before, and which has never previously occurred in all his works.

BANG, MALIN Structures of Light and Spruce CD
"In my ears, there is a potential musicality in any sound appearing in our everyday reality, and my method is to develop them into resilient actions performed by instruments and acoustic objects", says Malin Bång, Swedish composer and a founding member of the Curious Chamber Players (that can be heard on this CD). Her close connection with the musicians allows intense experimentation. She creates a spectrum of unpredictable and contrasting actions, ranging from the intimate and barely audible to the harsh and obstinate. In her work, she often incorporates acoustic objects to expand the sound world and to suggest that a musical content can be shaped by anything valuable to the artistic purpose. Malin Bång resides in Stockholm. Her work includes music for instrumental ensembles, orchestra, electronic music based on field recordings, and instrumental performance pieces. Lately she has specifically explored the mixed, amplified instrumental ensemble extended with acoustic objects in collaboration with the members of Curious Chamber Players. Her works are performed worldwide. She is regular visiting professor and lecturer at the composition faculty of the Göteborg University. "structures of molten light" features alto flute, bass clarinet, percussion/radio, piano/radio, guitar, violin, cello as performed by Curious Chamber Players; "arching" features amplified cello and amplified tools (wooden plank, rasp, saw, file, marker), as well as electronics, as performed by UmeDuo; "palinode" features amplified ensemble of bass flute, bass clarinet, cello and three objects: metal sculpture, vase and swing, as performed by Curious Chamber Players; "purfling" features amplified violin and electronics, performed by: Karin Hellqvist - violin; "jasmonate" features amplified ensemble of piccolo flute, bass clarinet, percussion/writing pad, inside piano/typewriter, tabletop guitar, violin, cello, and two hour glasses, as performed by Curious Chamber Players.

SCARLATTI, DOMENICO Domenico Scarlatti and the Modern Era of the Harpsichord CD
In this unusual recording Andreas Skouras demonstrates the tremendous range of tonal and expressive possibilities offered by the harpsichord. The program is highly personal but also dramaturgically cogent: A selection from the sonatas of Domenico Scarlatti is juxtaposed with four works from the 20th century which could hardly be more different. People do not actually associate Ysang Yun with the harpsichord -- this makes the way he works with the instrument in "Shao Yang Yin" from 1966 all the more surprising. The Finnish composer Jukka Tiensuu on the other hand is an excellent harpsichordist himself, and his "Etudes" display his profound knowledge of the instrument. Also featured on this CD: The suite from the opera "Capriccio" by Richard Strauss as well as Minas Borboudakis's "Hommage à Picasso", which he composed for his countryman Andreas Skouras in 2003.Andreas Skouras, born in 1972 in Salonica (Greece), studied piano with Professor Franz Massinger and harpsichord with Professor Lars Ulrik Mortensen and Professor Ketil Haugsand at the Munich University of Music and Performing Arts. Concert appearances, CD, radio, and television productions as pianist and harpsichordist with orchestra or solo, in chamber music and Lied recitals regularly lead him throughout Europe to festivals such as Early Music in London, Festival Aix-en-Provence, Gidon Kremer's Lockenhaus, les muséiques in Basel, Sacrum Profanum in Krakow, Bluval Festival, Summer Concerts between Danube and Altmühl, MDR Music Summer as well as to the United States, where among others he has performed in New York's Carnegie Recital Hall. Andreas Skouras teaches harpsichord at the Munich University of Music and Performing Arts. He was awarded the music scholarship of the City of Munich and the Bavarian Arts Prize.

FORNO, CARLA DAL Top Of The Pops Cassette
Carla Dal Forno offers Top Of The Pops, a self-released cassette disclosing six songs of sultry pop devotion. This late-spring cassette of cover songs now gets the wider autumnal release it deserves, showcasing the full range of Dal Forno's virtuous taste, style and production in her distinct post-punk, pop (but) minimalist sensibility. Not without cheek, the wink-and-a-nod blue-film bawdiness of "Lay Me Down" (Renee) and "Give Me Back My Man" (The B-52s) are complemented by the earnest ballads of "A Silver Key Can Open A Lock Somewhere" (Liliput) and The Fates's "No Romance." Kiwi Animal's "Blue Morning" finally gets a recorded release as well. This cosmic inner dialogue of love lost is matched only by the penultimate track, "Summertime Sadness" which is the best example of how devastatingly personal a pop song truly can be. It's all emphasized by Dal Forno's sparse production which, as with each of these six songs, brings her vocal interpretations to the fore. Pearl blue cassette wrapped in color-printed J-cards and with color sticker inlays. Artwork designed by Carla Dal Forno.

FIXMER, TERENCE Through The Cortex CD
Terence Fixmer's path through the changing techno landscape of the past twenty years has been anything but direct. Indeed, the French-born producer, musician and Planete Rouge label founder has long been influenced by the periphery of continental European dance music subgenres from electronic body music, new beat and acid, before combining them into his own pioneering hybrid of futuristic, EBM-inflected techno with classic releases such as Muscle Machine (2001) or the collaborative Between The Devil (2004) with Nitzer Ebb's Douglas McCarthy. While his sound in recent years has been rediscovered and recast in diverse contexts by a new generation of producers, his new album, Through The Cortex sees Fixmer gravitating toward a different kind of industrial-tinged electronics, led as much (or more) by analog sequencers, melodies and ultra-saturated sounds of synthesizers than drums and percussion. Across eight tracks at a compact but varied 40 minutes, the LP touches on an aesthetic hinted at in recent Ostgut Ton releases Beneath The Skin (OSTGUT 097EP, 2016) and Force (OSTGUT 106EP, 2017), revealing a sonic narrative through noisy, screaming synth/vocal riffs with a jagged, guitarlike post-punk sensibility. Through The Cortex is techno with a voice, or rather multiple voices, guiding listeners through hypnotic, space- and social-themed terrain as a kind of dark soundtrack to darker days. The result ranges from the slow John Carpenter-inspired funk of "Expedition" and the patient yet muscular stomp of "Fury" to the mesmerizing Suicide-like pop of single "Accelerate", where Fixmer, using his voice as an instrument, chants the track's ambiguous title in an invocation of systemic change/collapse. Elsewhere, the story is told with more abstract and wailing vocals like on "Shout in A Black Hole", or in the warm, entrancing chords floating across the stereo image in ostensibly changing time-signatures on "A Halo Somewhere", the LP's uncharacteristically kosmische musik come-down. The track, and Through The Cortex as a whole, reflect what can be described as Fixmer's idiosyncratic take on both techno subgenres as well as the larger pool of electronic music in general. This broad approach translates into a sound that is not only difficult to pin down, but also one that lends itself to multiple listens.

YVES TUMOR Serpent Music LP
2018 repress. The enigmatic Tennessee-raised, Turin-based Yves Tumor presents Serpent Music, a poignant album recorded between Miami, Leipzig, Los Angeles and Berlin over three years. Evolved from a diverse and prolific creative history under an expansive plethora of covert aliases via various forward-thinking labels, Yves Tumor emerges as his most personal and matured incarnation to date. With involvement across various artistic outlets expanding to fashion such as a visceral live performance for LA's Hood By Air earlier this year, the global artist has built a distinctly bold personal aesthetic both musically and visually as a performer. Painstakingly written from pieces developed upon since 2013, Serpent Music was initially composed as a soul record - based around delicate and emotive songwriting in various forms. It was a highly difficult project to undertake on both a creative and personal level, weaving thematic links through paranoia, social anxiety, and missing loved ones. "The songs come from a much more emotional and very vulnerable place... They're very close to me and I've been cautious of how I would eventually present them to the world." he explains. The album spans sonically diverse and richly-textured pieces, formed from live, organic instruments, samples and various field recordings. Dreamlike lo-fi psychedelia sits alongside broken electronic experimentations, ambient compositions between abrasive noise, offering insight into a haunting otherworld. From melodic choral vocals and soaring synths, to screeching guitar riffs, dramatic spoken word samples and live drumming, Serpent Music evidently moves through a strange and intriguing personal journey. "Broke In" features Oxhy. The album is mastered and cut by Rashad Becker at D&M. Features photography by Daniel Sannwald.

"Mono no aware", "the pathos of things", also translates as "an empathy toward things", or "a sensitivity to ephemera". A term for the awareness of impermanence, or the transience of things. A meditation on mortality and life's transience, ephemerality heightens the appreciation of beauty and sensitivity to their passing. In investigating the passing of time, the boundaries between memory and hallucination become blurred; between fiction and reality. The movement of time transforms into an eternal present. DAIJING, PAN Lack LP
2018 repress. Pan Daijing presents her debut album Lack on PAN. Culminating as the purgative "finale" to her improvisational live performances, Pan Daijing's debut album also offers an insight to her future works. The process was intuitive and raw, born out of her previous explorations. Over the past two years, she has composed, recorded, and edited different concerts and field recordings across Europe, China, and Canada, forming the basis of the album. Arriving as her first full-length album, Lack was crafted from this long, painstaking mental and physical practice. Daijing's pieces are created around a very intense and intimate mental catharsis, often expressed through a close physical interaction with strangers in her live sets which seek to engage them in a highly personal way. "When I was finalizing this album, they didn't feel like tracks to me anymore, but more like a psychoanalytical process," she says. "I saw myself being this absurd, mad person 'acting' out the sounds... It's rather physical, and became like a mind game. All things came out naturally as part of me." The narrative of the album presents a perspective of the world as "the theater of our minds", where Daijing sees the record as an "opera piece" in its storytelling and drama. Photography by Ralf Marsault; Artwork by Bill Kouligas. Mastered by Rashad Becker at Dubplates & Mastering.

POST & LUCIA PALACIOS, DIETMAR Franco's Settlers: An Example of the Suppression of the 'Searching' Documentary Film Book
A collection of texts by Patricia Campelo, Carlos Castresana, Cristóbal Gómez Benito, Christoph Haas, Christoph Hübner, Paco Nadal, Rafael Poch-de-Feliu, Johanna Pumb, Georg Seeßlen, Kerstin Stutterheim, and Juan Zapater. For some time, neoliberalism has defined the content and aesthetic of documentary films. The classic open, "searching" documentary film is now very rare. It has been superseded by formatted, closed documentaries that follow the rules of advertising, propaganda or feature films, seeking to arouse emotions and encourage identification with the heroes of the story. For the past twenty years, festivals, film sponsors, and TV companies have been demanding and promoting feel-good films in conformity to the market. There's little desire for films that offer grey shades, skepticism, complexity, distance from the subject, films that are thought-provoking and challenging. Through the example of Franco's Settlers (PL 084DVD), this book explores the difficulties encountered by filmmakers who resist this neoliberal standard format. It also considers the subject of the film, how Spain has not yet undergone a process of coming to terms with the civil war, Franco's dictatorship and their legacies. 320 pages; softcover; 33 colored photographs.

POST & LUCIA PALACIOS, DIETMAR Franco's Settlers DVD
Franco's Settlers: The History Of A Village Without A History: There's a village among the high plains of La Mancha in Spain whose name pays tribute to its creator. Llanos del Caudillo (Plains of the Caudillo) was one of 300 settlement villages built for poor farmers during the dictatorship of General Franco. The documentary film Franco's Settlers is a portrait of this village, which was founded in 1955. The film explores how the legacy of the dictatorship is handled, a legacy that still divides Spanish society. Highly significant documents were unearthed during the shooting of the film. The findings prompt the mayor to declare: "These documents contain the history of a village without a history." What begins as an investigation into an unknown chapter in Spanish history evolves into a reflection on contemporary Spanish society. A society in which a judge trying to prosecute those who committed crimes during the dictatorship himself becomes the subject of judicial prosecution, while at the same time those who still valorize the dictatorship go unpunished. The film explores the past to find the key to the present and the question why many people still honor the dictator. Meanwhile, some Spaniards are demanding justice for crimes against humanity committed during the military coup (1936), civil war (1936-1939) and the 40-year dictatorship (1939-1975). Approximately 114,000 victims of Francoist violence are still missing, buried in mass graves. The amnesty law of 1977 impedes any sort of penal action. In 2010, victims seeking justice filed a complaint in Argentina. Unlike many films that deal with Spanish historical memory by siding with the victim's perspective, Franco's Settlers gives voice to both sides, including those who still defend and admire the dictator Franco. So the film captures what it meant to live under a dictatorship. By using the village as an example and villagers' stories of harassment, abuse and economic betrayal, the corruption of the Francoist system is revealed. The film consciously locates itself in the tradition of poetic documentary filmmaking, recalling both in its aesthetic and its cinematic narrative the historical film debates of Claude Lanzmann (Shoah) and Eberhard Fechner (Der Prozess).DVD content: Germany, Spain 2013/2018, DVD 9, NTSC, no regions. POST & LUCIA PALACIOS, DIETMAR Franco on Trial: The Spanish Nuremburg? DVD
Franco on Trial is a documentary film by Dietmar Post and Lucía Palacios. After the success of Franco's Settlers (PL 084DVD), their first exploration of Franco's dictatorship, now they investigate one of the darkest chapters of European history: the crimes committed in Spain during the 1936 coup, the subsequent civil war (1936-1939), and during Franco's dictatorship (1939-1975), which could only be established with the cooperation of Germany, Italy, and Portugal. After a Spanish judge's attempt to prosecute Franco and his generals for crimes against humanity failed in 2010, Franco's victims filed a case in Buenos Aires, known as "Querella Argentina". An Argentinian investigating judge, María Servini, has now issued 24 international arrest warrants for high-ranking representatives of the Franco dictatorship. The filmmakers accompany her as she tries to initiate court proceedings against the accused, proving that a reappraisal of Spain's darkest chapter is long overdue. Franco on Trial investigates specific cases presented in the "Argentinian Complaint". By interweaving never-before-seen archival material with current footage and contextualizing each case historically and juridically, the film reveals new evidence. In one of the key scenes, when one of the suspected perpetrators is confronted directly with the accusations by the plaintiff, the investigating judge and the plaintiff's lawyers, the film creates a sense of the impending lawsuit's significance. For more than twenty years Palacios and Post have been investigating Spanish "historical memory". Franco on Trial is the result of over ten years' work. During that time the directors managed to gain access to people from both sides of the conflict, including the daughter of a general in the 1936 coup, who still cherishes a silver-framed portrait of (and personal present from) the German Nazi leader Hermann Goering. Franco on Trial reveals an almost forgotten part of 20th century European history and considers whether the "Argentinian Complaint" will become a Spanish Nuremberg.DVD content: Germany, Spain 2018, DVD 9, NTSC, no regions. Film running time: 102 minutes; Total running time: 121 minutes. Includes 16-page booklet in German, English, and Spanish. Subtitles: English, German, Spanish.

NACHTBRAKER When You Find a Stranger in the Alps CD
After a string of acclaimed EPs on Heist, Dirt Crew and Quartet Series, Amsterdam's Nachtbraker presents When You Find A Stranger In The Alps, his first long-player on his own Quartet Series imprint. The good-humored Dutchman, tongue always firmly in cheek, has always refused to stick to the "sound du jour" and the industry's conventions, following his own path instead, continually willing to step out of his comfort zone. When You Find A Stranger In The Alps, a nod to his favorite Coen Brothers movie, is testament to Nachtbraker's studio prowess and drive to explore new sonic pastures and styles. The album consists of thirteen tracks, made over the course of two-and-a-half years in his studio. Constantly shifting through different settings and moods, the album feels like a deep dream, with vivid details, blurry edges and a warped sense of time. The word "stranger" in the title references the dream state in which one can sometimes be a stranger to oneself. Opener "The Dream Sequence" sets the mood with a lo-slung hip-house groove that relies on field recordings, like the sound of one of the capital's trams. "Flambo", a delectable slice of up-tempo French-filtered house, is aimed straight at the dance floor. Nachtbraker dims the lights on "NSFW", cleverly manipulating samples from adult-oriented flicks, and turns in a hilarious skit with "LOL". "Randy", a quintessential Nachtbraker track, morphs from a Balearic, tropical disco shuffler to a dance floor banger. "Driving Me Lazy" starts out as a down-tempo number but changes into a full-on drum-n-bass workout. The driving "You Can't Run" features drunken chords over a sober beat, conjuring up visions of running circles in a dark maze. "Just Doing My Thang" rides a classic broken beat, while Nachtbraker pushes the boundaries again on "Innaspace", which starts out as an instrumental hip-hop track yet finishes on a jungle tip. "Aliens" is a choppy, heads-down groover with cheeky UFO-geek samples that wouldn't be out of place on a mid-90's West Coast deep house compilation. "Horsepony" finds Nachtbraker on a sultry Nightmares On Wax tip. Finally, it ends with where it all started, the moment "When You Wake Up". The album was recorded and mixed at Nachtbraker's studio in the Amsterdam Volkshotel. All 13 tracks are run through 2" tape on a Studer A800 and are mastered at Q-lab in Basel, Switzerland.

MCCANN, SEAN Saccharine Scores CD/BOOK
Saccharine Scores is an album/art book documenting Sean McCann's recent chamber compositions. Ranging from the 10-person ensemble performance of "Portraits of Friars" at Fylkingen, Stockholm in February 2018, to his first quartet piece "Victorian Wind", performed in Toronto in 2014. McCann's scores leak pastoral and bizarre passages, dancing in the banal beauty of sound poetry. The performances feature guest musicians Sarah Davachi, Zachary Paul, Geneva Skeen, Celia Eydeland, Maxwell August Croy, and more. The book holds in-depth scores, program notes, and photography by McCann, a lovely complement to finger through while you lay down to listen to the disc. The notes for "Pistons" follow here: "I assembled this piece while wanting to make my life of leisure and gluttony in London somehow artistic. I was in London for a week or ten days in October 2017 for a business trip. I love London. I love doing two things at a time or more. So it worked out. I find I have a hard time enjoying anything unless I am multitasking. For example, right now as I type this description I am also drinking old coffee with ice-cubes in it, exporting a master from Pro-Tools downstairs, and watching Friday the 13th: A New Beginning (1985) on the television set. So in this British multitasking, I decided to work on a piece of music while indulging in food and drink roaming around London. I was also reading Baudelaire's Les Fleurs Du Mal (1857) during these outings (talk about sentimental). Some elements of those poems crept their way, drawn out of order, into Celia's singing text. As with all my compositions to this point, they are left open to interpretation: no real meaning, just flickers of settings and emotions. The taste of everything below (the score) spawned thoughts of colors and elements and people and emotions, though with the text I decided to keep it simply about the food and the beverages. The romantic music and singing is the rendering of the emotions I felt, while my banal reading was the actual act of consumption. I recorded the text while lying down in my childhood bedroom in Goleta, California, half asleep just trying to get it over with. It was a fitting situation for the piece: forced beauty." Edition of 200, signed and numbered with 132-page 6? x 9? book.

MAC LOW, JACKSON Poetry & Music CD
Poetry & Music is a tremendous collection of recordings from famed Fluxus poet and artist Jackson Mac Low (1922-2004). Originally published on New Wilderness Audiographics as a cassette in 1977, these recordings have been cleaned up and remastered by Sean McCann in 2018. Jackson's beautiful text formulas are supplemented by stereo multi-tracking, creating a spatial jungle of wordplay. One gem of this CD is the live foray into tape manipulation from 1966 featuring the assistance of James Tenney and Max Neuhaus. It is fabled that they took Jackson's voice and slowed it down to a guttural thunderstorm during playback, resulting in a manic blend of words darting through a black cloud of reverberation. Only a small amount of Jackson's sound poetry is currently available, making this collection a delight to swallow and digest. Co-produced with Charlie Morrow, Recital re-presents this history to the ears of both young and old. Edition of 250 with 8-page insert with scores and introduction by Charlie Morrow.

SCANNER Mass Observation (Expanded) CD
From Scanner, aka Robin Rimbaud: "There were three performers and one witness. I can remember this day well, even though it was some twenty-four years ago. Standing up before a mixing desk in a dark room in an apartment in South London, Jim O'Rourke, Robert Hampson, and myself, literally all hands-on deck as we each took responsibility for the faders on the desk. Introducing sounds to the mix, the accident reigned supreme. Sometimes the high frequency of cellular noise would pervade the atmosphere, at other junctures it would erupt into words and melt down to radio hiss. Mike Harding from Touch stood silently, listening intently. A couple of years earlier we had set up Ash International, an audio project which allowed us to release unusual and exploratory music and sounds that we felt deserved a wider audience, from Runaway Train (1994) to the early Scanner releases. Two mixes were captured directly onto DAT tape, one of which would be released as Mass Observation (1994), an EP that featured a 25-minute version of one of these sessions, but until today the second, longer mix has never been heard. Dehumanized communications, beatless radio signals drawn in live to tape, and accompanied by dial tone pulses and abstract textures, Mass Observation is a highly suggestive picture of a particular place in a city at a specific time. A form of "Sound Polaroid" as I tended to call such recordings. My early work, in the early and mid-1990s, was a study in surveillance. Long before our concerns about data leakage at Facebook, and Siri spying on our private moments, I used the scanner device itself - a modestly sophisticated radio receiver - to explore the relationship between public and private spheres, lending a deep sense of drama to these found cellular conversations within a contextual electronic score. In many ways, this work pre-empted our reality culture, with television now saturated by Love Island and Big Brother. In the experimental techno uprising of Britain in the mid-1990s, this work proved controversial and memorable. Bjork sampled Mass Observation controversially for her "Possibly Maybe" single, whilst Coil and Aphex Twin bought radio scanners and introduced these found voices into their recordings; I continued to create work in this grey area of ambient sound. It's work that still carries great meaning for me, opening up possibilities with sound and introducing the human voice back into experimental electronic music."

BLOCK, OLIVIA 132 Ranks CD
132 Ranks for Pipe Organ was composed by Olivia Block in 2016-2017, as a commission for LAMPO and The Renaissance Society. Block composed the piece specifically for the enormous Skinner Organ at Rockefeller Memorial Chapel in Chicago. The world premiere was performed by Block on April 21, 2017. The concert, free and open to all ages attracted a large crowd. 132 Ranks was conceived as a hybrid of concert and sound installation. Six speakers were placed throughout the chapel. These speakers played white noise, sine tones, and prerecorded organ sounds, designed to interact acoustically with the live performance, and bring out the acoustics of the chapel in unconventional ways. White noise and low bass tones pulsed and sliced through the air, while sine tones and organ clusters created complex beating patterns and inner ear sound phenomena. Audience members were participants, quietly walking through the majestic, dimly lit chapel. Listeners noticed how the acoustics, materials and shape of the space altered the live and recorded organ sounds as Block performed. Some audience members relaxed on the floor of the chapel, listening, while others explored the upper balconies and hallways. 132 Ranks was designed to emphasize the architectural qualities and unique sonic and spatial capacities of the Skinner Organ. The piece included both the lowest pedal notes, felt in the body, as well as the highest bell tones, played at extreme dynamic levels. At times, sounds were isolated in discrete locations to emphasize the chapel's shape. Olivia Block is an American composer and media artist. Her body of work includes electroacoustic recordings, audio-visual installations, performance, sound design for cinema, and scores for orchestra and chamber music concerts. She has performed throughout Europe, America, and Japan in tours in festivals and performance series including The Walker Museum concert series, Incubate (Tilburg), Festival del Bosque Germinal (Mexico City), Sonic Light (Amsterdam), Kontraste (Krems), Dissonanze (Rome), Archipel (Geneva) Angelica (Bologna), Sunoni per il Popolo (Montreal), and many others. Additionally, she has presented work at the ICA (London), MCA (Chicago), La Biennale di Venezia 52nd International Festival of Contemporary Music, The Kitchen (NYC), ISSUE Project Room, Experimental Intermedia (Brooklyn) and TIFF (Toronto).

GENGRAS, M. GEDDES Light Pipe 2CD
To summarize the work of M.Geddes Gengras is no easy feat. A tireless artist, whose output sprawls across experimental dub, ambient and low-key techno, his wide-ranging discography reveals a curiosity that serves as a primary driver for creation. Light Pipe is arguably Gengras's most ambitious recording project to date. His tenth solo recording is an epic undertaking, spanning over two-and-a-half hours. Across the two CD set, Gengras charts out evocative landscapes of texture and harmony. Working with very simple elements, he creates a tidal like sound space, where sound layers flow seamlessly, rising and falling with an ever-changing sense of motion. These pieces were written across several years responding to site specific performance situations. These include a durational performance in Los Angeles at The Getty Center's Irwin Garden, a special performance alongside the banks of the Los Angeles River and performances at the El Rey and Regent Theatres. Each disc in this edition focuses specifically on either interior or exterior spaces; the indoor and the outdoor, reflecting the specific conditions of how sound operates in these types of situations. Light Pipe is a long-form work within which multiple states of listening are possible, and moreover encouraged. It's music that is ideal for deep immersion; for sleep, for flying and for any creative states within which a sense of expansion is needed. M.Geddes Gengras is an experimental composer and performer living in upstate New York. His works in the medium of modular synthesis comfortably straddle a variety of forms while remaining rooted in a deep affinity for the limitations of hardware synthesis and a keen ear for timbral manipulation. Presenting a spectrum that is very diverse in sonics and mood, the connecting thread between the extended ambient spaces and more jarring aspects is a meditative devotion to sound and process. Since 2011, he has released nine albums of solo material, both under his own name and his dance-music alias, Personable. He has shared stages with William Basiniski, Tim Hecker, Laurel Halo, Curtis Roads, Simian Mobile Disco, David Toop, Jon Hassell, S U R V I V E, and OM, collaborated on stage and in studio with Joe McPhee, Jon Gibson, Sun Araw, Greg Fox, The Congos, and Georgia and Bill Kreutzmann, as well as performing at the Los Angeles Natural History Museum, Museum of Contemporary Art, The Getty Center, Moogfest, Mutek_MX, and FORM Arcosanti.

LAST HURRAH!!, THE Los Angeles LP
LP version. The Last Hurrah!!'s Los Angeles started out as a commission work for the Vossajazz festival, and was performed in Voss in western Norway in March 2018. A far cry from Los Angeles, but to mastermind and founder HP Gundersen there are no boundaries in music and such differences are only sources of inspiration and natural parts of his vast musical universe. For the previous album Mudflowers (RCD 2171CD/RLP 3171LP, 2015), HP Gundersen "found" and recruited the perfect singer in Maesa Pullman, daughter of famed actor Bill Pullman. Coming from a musical family, she performs frequently in different musical constellations in Southern California, being a profiled presence in the local roots community. A songwriter in her own right, Maesa also handles guitar and piano as well as the drums. Since the release of Mudflowers, bass player, recording engineer and co-producer Jason Hiller has come onboard as a permanent member of the trio that currently serves as the core of The Last Hurrah!!. Originally seen as a one-off project, it soon became clear that the chemistry between the three went much deeper and far reaching than the Americana influences that dominated parts of Mudflowers.

INTERBELLUM Dead Pets, Old Griefs CD
Interbellum is the musical project of Lebanese singer-songwriter Karl Mattar. Formed in 2015, the project sees him working alongside multi-instrumentalist and producer Fadi Tabbal and other musicians from the Beirut music scene. Prior to the creation of Interbellum, Mattar released folk albums under the moniker Charlie Rayne. 2014's Wider Waters saw him move to Berlin and embark on a 40-date tour in Europe, before returning to Beirut to launch Interbellum. Both projects were showcased at Wickerpark Festival, the leading indie festival in the Middle East. Interbellum's debut Now Try Coughing featured lo-fi guitar-driven songs recorded live to cassette. It was recorded and self-released in 2016. Dead Pets, Old Griefs is the band's second full-length album, and expands the band's palette considerably, adding synthesizers, samples, and electronics to the mix. The album features ten songs that revolve around themes of memory, time, childhood, and loss. Apocalyptic imagery -- real, imagined, and figurative -- permeates the album, and the instrumentation follows suit, warping, distorting and folding in on itself. The record plays like a broken music box, its kaleidoscopic melodic songs disjointed and smeared by noise, dissonance, and processed sounds. Recorded in Tabbal's Tunefork Studios over a period of several months, Dead Pets, Old Griefs features contributions from Marwan Tohme, Julia Sabra, and Pascal Semerdjian from dream-pop quartet Postcards, and Camille Cabbabé from post-rock ensemble K?Z?. The album is released by Lebanese indie label Ruptured in a limited edition of 300.

As with Saigon Supersound Vol. 1, (SSS 001CD/LP, 2017) this new volume digs deeper to share the beautiful music of a short but significant period in Vietnam's history. Much like the country itself, the music of Vietnam has endured many twists. As the result of the Geneva Accords in 1954, Vietnam was divided into two. From the North, the Nationalist forces fought to reunite Vietnam as a Communist state, while American troops backed the government of the South. This caused a mass migration of Northerners to the South, which included many Tân Nh?c (modern music) singers and songwriters. Tân Nh?c continued to develop in the South, moving on from the influences of its main inspiration, French music. In the North, the Resistance music, the so-called Nh?c ?? (Red Music), promoted socialism, patriotism and anti-capitalism and was the only genre allowed on national radio. Between 1954-1960, the theme of (quê h??ng), or hometown, was a main inspiration for many songwriters such as Hoàng Thi Th?, Lam Ph??ng and Nguy?n H?u Thi?t. The 9th track on the compilation, "Thôn Tr?ng M? H?i Tr?ng Tròn" showcases a variety of images often described in this genre: the harvest moon, playful children, an old mother. Every recording made in this era is then an organic combination of human experiences, communications and uniqueness. In 1965, the first American troops landed in Vietnam, bringing with them the musical influences of the likes of Beatles, Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, and Elvis Presley. The Vietnamese people quickly integrated it into the repertoire with the hope of further diversifying the music of Vietnam. Constantly changing and learning from different cultures, the modern music of Vietnam cuts a window into the soul of a Vietnamese person and the country's history as a whole. With that, the hope is that Saigon Supersound Vol. 2 would take you on a trip back to the unique atmosphere of Saigon through the different palettes of music that this beautiful place offers. Features: Carol Kim, Son Ca, Van Son, Elvis Ph??ng, Thanh Tuyên, Thanh Thuy, Phuong Dung, Thanh Lan, Tuy Phu?ng, Champagne, Hùng C??ng & Mai L? Huyên, Connie Kim, Tru?ng Hai, Mai L? Huyên, L? Thu, and Kích ??ng Nhac AVT.

KESZLER, ELI Stadium CD
New York-based artist Eli Keszler is at the apex of his career. This year alone he's had a solo exhibition in the UK, performed with Laurel Halo, collaborated with author László Krasznahorkai, taught experimental composition and performance in the Pyrenees, and toured with Oneohtrix Point Never. Stadium is his new album for Shelter Press. As his ninth solo record, Stadium reflects his move from Brooklyn to Manhattan, where he produced the album. The constant motion and ever-changing landscapes of the island helped him modify and shape his sound into a new kind of film noir. There is a startling amount of expression at play on each track, where intersections of melody, restraint and rhythm are used to challenge the idea of memory, impression and space. Keszler is often mistaken for an electronic musician, but in fact his sounds are raw and natural, produced by hand. His performance with drumset and acoustic percussion are central to his work. He produces almost impossible textures through self-realized methodologies: cascading melodies, a shadow of voices, and a unique pointillist materiality. Although playing with the intensity of digitally-created music, his communications are done live with no processing; this is what gives Stadium its depth and warmth. On Stadium, Keszler uses lived experience to realize the most wide-ranging sound he's created to date, drawing out textures from overlapping geographies and transforming these recordings into starting points for composition. He then builds on these environments to create subliminal spaces for his music, which is pushed to new levels with string and brass arrangements. Is this the "stadium" referred to in the title: a larger network of sound and bodies moving continually, oscillating and turning in on itself? Keszler has explored these ideas before with notable projects such as his Manhattan Bridge installation Archway (2015) Stadium takes these long-running ideas to new depths. Keszler states: "The recordings on Stadium are inverted. They are landscapes scaled for the singular, like a mass collecting in one arena, this music compresses city spaces, genre and instrumentalism into an amorphous form. On the record, there are ruptures of information and happenstance. Like a game, it could go any number of ways." Glassmastered CD in silkscreened jewelcase.

ODD BEHOLDER All Reality Is Virtual CD
Odd Beholder, the project of Zurich-based musician Daniela Weinmann, releases its full-length debut album All Reality Is Virtual. All Reality Is Virtual is an intelligent, tenderly flowing and weird pop album, colorful, assertive. It deals with the strange temptations of our time: from Tinder to AI, from offline loneliness to obsessive self-marketing. "I noticed that the main temptation of a digitalized life is the idea that everything can be measured, recorded and therefore known", says Weinmann. "But I yearn for surprise, for wonder. The unknown, the uncontrollable is appealing to me". Odd Beholder have released two highly acclaimed EPs already, Lighting (2016) and Atlas (SINNBUS 068EP, 2017), followed by the Remixes EP (2018). Those remixes have been contributed by friends made along the way and artists of which Odd Beholder became fans: The/Das, Fejká, Hundreds, Alessandro Giannelli, Kalipo, and Thomas Atzmann. After having played tours in China, Germany, Switzerland and Italy, Weinmann teamed up with Swiss musician and producer Martin Schenker to finish producing All Reality Is Virtual. CD in four-sided digipak on thick paper.

SPACEMEN 3 Forged Prescriptions 2CD
Forged Prescriptions is a double album by Spacemen 3, containing alternative takes and demo versions of songs from their album The Perfect Prescription (1987), plus some previously unreleased tracks. In his liner notes, Spacemen 3's Sonic Boom says this release presents the album's songs in their "full guitar-laden versions with all the layers of beautifully streamlined guitar, considered by us to be too hard to replicate live and therefore reduced for the original release. For me, this is where Spacemen 3's songwriting came to a head; many of these songs pre-dated Sound Of Confusion (1986), some were even recorded at both sessions, but I am still impressed mightily by Jason Pierce's lyrical genius on originals like "Walking With Jesus" and re-writes like "Come Down Easy" and his fluid guitar playing across the whole sessions."

MELODIC ENERGY COMMISSION Migration Of The Snails LP
"Melodic Energy Commission is a Canadian gem and an interesting branch of the Hawkwind family tree (featuring Del Delmar on electronics.) Hailing from British Columbia, their unique blend of space rock, progressive and hippie psychedelia began in 1977 as a recording-only project titled The Melodic Energy Commission of Collected Artists. MEC quickly released two albums: 1979's Stranger in Mystery and 1980's Migration Of The Snails. The music is raw and heavily exploratory, often shifting styles radically within a single track, moving from quiet chamber orchestras to dissonant guitar freak outs with smears of analog electronics filling in gaps along the way. RIYL: Amon Düüll II, Tangerine Dream, Hawkwind, Sun City Girls and Syd Barret."

BLUE ORCHIDS Righteous Harmony Fist LP
LP version. Martin Bramah and his Blue Orchids bandmates have never been prolific, with albums appearing sparingly. Righteous Harmony Fist is a surprise on the heels of The Once And Future Thing (2015) and Factory Star's Enter Castle Perilous (2011); they'll soon return to the studio to record yet another. However those songs may or may not look back, the present and future beckon. "If They Ever Lay A Finger On Us", a rare cover originally written by Manchester combo Bingo Harry, whose debut album will arrive in coming months, is a hymn for the righteous weary set in an age of turmoil, whereas "Deep State" turns modern political paranoia on its heels, with its comparison of flawed societal thinking to a highly troubled kid: "Tiny said 'the Earth is flat'/Hit his teacher with a cricket bat/Now he hides in the woods and eats his meat raw/While teacher sucks her soup through a drinking straw." "Beached" is a classic paranoid rant in the style of "Work"; built-up aggression and intensity, a joyous purge in the light of doom, and no Blue Orchids record would be complete without a sort of saga, in this case the mysterious "Lancelot's Last Word". The highlights of the album may be "The Lad That Time Forgot", which latches The Greatest Hit (Money Mountain) (1982)'s melancholy to more assured backing, or "Incandescent Artillery", a soaring anthem built around John Paul Moran's organ line. Blue Orchids was formed by Martin Bramah and Una Baines, both past members of The Fall.

BAYLE, FRANCOIS Electrucs ! LP
Transversales Disques present Electrucs !, a new release of never-released music by Francois Bayle. On the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the GRM, composer Bayle introduces some of his unpublished archives; pieces include the title composition, "Electrucs !" (1974) composed on a 1970s Synthi AKS synthesizer like an imaginary soundtrack, "Foliphonie" (1974) inspired by La Grande Polyphonie (1978), and "Marpège" (1995), dedicated to Bernard Parmegiani. Also included is "Cinq Dessins En Rosace" (1973). Born in 1932 in Tamatave, Madagascar, where he lived for 14 years, Bayle is a major figure of electro-acoustic music and member of Pierre Schaeffer's historic Groupe de Recherches Musicales (GRM), formed in Paris in 1958. In 1975, the GRM was integrated with the new Institut National de l'Audiovisuel (INA) with Bayle as its head, a post he held until 1997, bringing invaluable contributions to the opening of musical research in these original innovative institutions. Ever since his first productions, L'expérience Acoustique (1971) Bayle has developed through a great variety of formats and designed the Acousmonium, a sound diffusion system used originally by the GRM. He also originated the record series Collection INA-GRM, and continues to organize concerts and support the development of technologically advanced musical instruments (Syter, GRM Tools, etc.).

PARMEGIANI, BERNARD Mémoire Magnétique, Vol.1 LP
Transversales Disques announces the release of Bernard Parmegiani's Mémoire Magnétique, Vol. 1. Spanning 1966-1990, this is a revelatory collection of never-released commercial and secret music by electronic music pioneer Parmegiani. Since the late 50's, Bernard Parmegiani, a major figure of electroacoustic music and a founding member of GRM has created some sixty pieces. From the start, Parmegiani's work was closely linked to the screen, with dozens of documentaries, films, long features, animation films but also musical pieces for dance, stage or television. If many of his pieces are landmarks in the history of electro-acoustic music (De Natura Sonorum (1978), La Roue Ferris (1971)), his application of music compositions is strongly embedded in the subconscious landscape of the French public (Stade 2, Roissy CDG Paris Airport...). The first volume of this compilation allows one to discover some of these lost tapes and unpublished recordings which were composed for the screen or the performing arts.

EP-4 Lingua Franca-1 CD
WRWTFWW Records present the official reissue of cult album Lingua Franca-1 (originally released in 1983) by groundbreaking Kyoto band EP-4. Straight from the delirious minds of unconventional geniuses Kaoru Sato (who had previously released an album as R.N.A. Organism on legendary Osaka label Vanity Records) and Yuji "Banana" Kawashima, Lingua Franca-1 is a seamless voyage of spellbinding mutant funk grooves, joyful post-punk explorations, synth fantasies, sexy distortions, and fluid cool-no-sweat vocals. Constantly mutating in an almost biological way (similarly to Colored Music's self-titled album (1981)), always mysterious and seductive, sometimes reminiscing of a freaky cross between PiL, Liquid Liquid, David Bowie, and Yello, EP-4's debut is hard to label, although "Debonair Wave" could be a legitimate way to describe this Japan's best-kept-secret of an album. Defying the rules wasn't limited to sonic experimentations for band leader Kaoru Sato. To promote Lingua Franca-1, he and his crew plastered gigantic (illegal) billboards all over Shibuya and Harajuku, announcing performances in four different cities on odd hours of the same day (May 5th, 1983). Other of his notable antics included originally sub-titling the album "Death to the Emperor Showa", causing a controversy (which led to censorship and a title-change), trying to release two albums on the same day without the concerned labels being aware of the plan or, in the R.N.A. Organism days, fooling Vanity Records into believing the demo he sent them came from a foreign band (it worked). Unique personality, unique music!

DIZZY BRAINS, THE Tany Razana CD
The Dizzy Brains, these four raging boys with their protest garage rock, left their homeland, Madagascar, to claim their anger against corruption, inaction of politicians and lack of freedom of expression. Raw vintage rock is their weapon to denounce and be heard. Lovers of The Sonics, The Stooges, and MC5, the two brothers, Eddy on vocals and Mahefa on bass, founders of the band, were raised on the rock of the 1960s and 70's by their father. Their songs speak about their country with love and passion but also about the corruption that ravages the future of the people. The first concert of The Dizzy Brains outside Tananarive was held at the Transmusicales of Rennes in 2015, of which they were the revelation. They performed the following year at the Printemps de Bourges, MaMa Festival, Fiesta des Suds or Solidays, and they also stepped onto the stages of the Festival d'Ete de Quebec and Esperanzah in Belgium. Their audience grew in the spring of 2018 during their first tour of Germany and the Netherlands. Between concerts, planes and the road, The Dizzy Brains produced Tany Razana, their second album in the south of France. These thirteen new songs are more mature than those of their first album Out Of The Cage(XRP 1602CD/LP, 2017). Entitled Tany Razana ("burnt earth" in Malagasy), this new album also gives pride of place to the guitar riffs of Poun and the powerful drumming of Mirana.
