SAVAGES Y SUEFO Brotherhood LP
LP version. After the release of their debut album Worldstyle (2012) the Budapest duo Savages Y Suefo are now returning with their second album Brotherhood; this time their message is more serious. The music summons blues elements but is also influenced by dub, funk and a little hip-hop while the lyrics are mainly about the social and personal problems of our time interpreted by talented guest vocalists from all over the world. The guest performance of KRSA puts the point on the letter "i" in "Brotherhood" and in the other reggae-inspired song "Pass It On". Being one of the dominant figures of the Hungarian ska movement he is an important guest on the album. As the main driving force behind Freak Power, Ashley Slater needs no introduction. He has worked with Dub Pistols, Dublex Inc, and Fort Knox Five, and his talents and professional performances turbocharged three songs. Denise M'Baye, the MC/singer of Mo'Horizons is featured in two down-tempo tracks. "Wings" is a laidback song about love while and "All My Life Is In This Bag" smuggles back a little bit of the mood of Worldstyle. Fedora is the best-known female MC/singer of the Hungarian bass music life. With "Come Away With Me" she proves that she's not only an bass music MC, but a great singer with deep emotions. Another guest from Hungary is the lead singer of the down-tempo funk band Mystical Plants. Bryant Goodman contributes to the album in two different tracks with his gravelly voice. "Bad Man's Ballad" is a bittersweet song about the average politician of our age while "Keep Going On" on the other hand is full of playfulness and delivers a short but positive message. Last but not least is the Ghanaian M3NSA on the board from Fokn Bois and RedRed. His lyrics in "It Works" are very motivating for everyone and spread the message of not giving up even if the world is seemingly against you. Savages Y Suefo's new album Brotherhood is a lot different from their previous one in many ways but it remained just as eclectic as its predecessor Worldstyle and still proves Savages Y Suefo's wide interest and openness in music that is needed today.

INFINITE SOUND Contemporary African-Amerikan Music LP
Aguirre Records present a reissue of Infinite Sound's Contemporary African-Amerikan Music. This is conscious free jazz featuring Roland P. Young, originally released in 1975 on the eclectic 1750 Arch records. "'1750 Arch was a beautiful Spanish-style hacienda,'recalls Young. 'It had a recording studio in the basement and the salon was a performance.' Young played solo gigs there and also in duo with cellist Chris Chaffe. He remembers it as a particularly 'transcendent' setting for concerts by this trio, with singer Aisha Kahlil and bassist Glenn Howell. 'What appeared to be 'experimental' was reaching for sounds and emotions that were unfamiliar. We performed at rallies in support of various causes; our ultimate goal was a blending of cultures.' In 1968, Young was working as a DJ at KSAN, an underground rock station in San Francisco. 'Glenn used to call me when I was on air to comment about the music I was playing; he was a musician and I invited him to come talk about music, then decided to play. The pair met Kahlil at one of their concerts. 'A mutual friend introduced her and told us she was a good vocalist, loved our music and wanted to sing with us. We invited her to a rehearsal and soon after invited her to join the group. Infinite Sound came together easily; we had a shared intuition, and created a lot of music. Each of us would bring ideas to rehearsals and we would work on them. We talked about how to present our material and how compositions would flow; we were also conscious of how we dressed for performances, how we moved on stage, how we interacted with each other and the audience. On occasion we would invite dancers to perform with us, friends of Aisha.' Contemporary African-Amerikan Music preserves a fascinating glimpse of the trio in action. Their compositions embrace mobile forms, with Howell's buoyant bass taking a role around which Young's horns and Kahlil's voice move. Rhythms dissolve into textures, and melodic shapes soften or flare into exuberant bursts of tonal color. The music's mood swings unpredictably from flamboyance to introspection. Moments of musical allusiveness mutate into passages of wild inventiveness. Tantalizingly, this was this trio's only release. Times have changed, yet increasingly in recent years creative artists have come to accept the need to erase musical boundaries and erode the constraints of aesthetic categorization." --Julian Cowley. Edition of 500.

BLACK ARTISTS GROUP In Paris, Aries 1973 LP
Aguirre Records present a reissue of In Paris, Aries 1973 by the Black Artists Group. "This outstanding free jazz session was recorded in 1973 in Paris by Chicago outfit. It was Lester Bowie, trumpeter with the Art Ensemble of Chicago, who suggested that the Black Artists Group should head for Paris. In 1972, several members took his advice and flew to France for an extended stay. The following year, a concert featuring saxophonist Oliver Lake, trumpeters Baikida Carroll and Floyd LeFlore, drummer Charles Bobo Shaw and trombonist Joseph Bowie (Lester's younger brother) was recorded and subsequently issued as In Paris, Aries 1973, a limited LP on the group's own label. Since their formation in 1968, the home of the collective had been St Louis, the city where the Bowies had grown up. It was there that Lester started to play, before moving, to Chicago in 1966, where he joined the recently-established Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM). His close friend Lake visited, attended AACM concerts and meetings and was inspired by their artistic vision, integrity, and organization. In June 1969, the Art Ensemble had taken their music to France, with its reputation for audiences that were open-minded and receptive to the music of innovators such as Cecil Taylor, Ornette Coleman, and others. In Paris, Aries 1973 offers a fascinating glimpse into that phase of BAG's existence. The album is dedicated to the memory of Kada Kayan, a bassist who had hoped to make the trip from St Louis but had grown ill and died. His absence adds special poignancy to the sound of the bass when it appears on this recording, played by Carroll. In Paris, Aries 1973 reveals BAG's musical affinities with the Art Ensemble of Chicago. Both groups preserved an independently-minded approach to the notion of free jazz and a carefully filtered awareness of pan-African musical practices, while their creative interest in space, mobile structure, chance occurrences and simultaneity also suggests parallels with the concerns of leading experimental composers working at that time. These performances in Paris of Shaw's "Something to Play On" and Lake's "Re-Cre-A-Tion," plus two collective compositions/improvisations, display the dedication to structural fluency and sensitivity to coloration that accompanied BAG's unorthodox group dynamics and their unconventional instrumental combinations. This is not a showcase for solos, but a shape-shifting and multi-centered statement of togetherness and discovery."--Julian Cowley. Edition of 500.

DALY, JOHN Selections From We Will Live Again 12"
John Daly presents a six track edition of his ten track digital album We Will Live Again. "This music was made over a year and a half period, while I was losing my father to cancer. Dan Walsh from Fixity and others in Cork played the drums. The vocals are by an Italian singer based in Galway, Barbara Vulso. This is the third album under my own name, having worked with aliases since 2012. It was always going to be so, and again I now realize that given the personal nature of the project it could only be that way."

DIRTY SONGS Dirty Songs Play Dirty Songs LP
FREE copies of this 2017 LP available for a limited time, thanks to Audika; can be added to any order; mailorder only, one per person. "Directed and produced by David Toop, Dirty Songs Play Dirty Songs reacts against our poisonous present, inspired anti-nostalgically by similarly reactive records and live performances from the 20th century: The Soft Machine and Pink Floyd 1967-68, The MC5's Kick Out the Jams, The Stooges, Sun Ra's Cosmic Tones For Mental Therapy, and The Heat Is On by The Isley Brothers. Dirty Songs Play Dirty Songs is the musical offshoot of a project conceived by artist Maxime Rossi, originating in (among other things) speculations on the (then unreleased) legendary Pink Floyd 'John Latham' recordings (1967) and FBI investigations (1964) into subversive and obscene messages supposedly buried within the recorded lyrics of The Kingsmen's 'Louie Louie'. Developed through conversations between Maxime Rossi and David Toop and through support from Fondation Fiminco & MRAC, these ideas metamorphosed into the band and recordings known as Dirty Songs, existing both as audio recordings and audio-visual elements of Maxime Rossi's installation Christmas On Earth Continued, exhibited at MRAC in November 2017. Dirty Songs is David Toop (bass, guitar, digital electronics, VCS3 synth), Phil Minton (voices), Evan Parker (soprano and tenor saxophones), Steve Beresford (Farfisa organ, VCS3 synth), Mark Sanders (drums). Package designed by Tom Recchion."

FERMATA Salvaged Space Cassette
Aurora Borealis presents the debut album from Fermata. Titled Salvaged Space, the album is constructed entirely out of phone and handheld recordings of quiet moments, street performers, instrumental improvisations, and noise pollution. Salvaged Space is a document of the last few years that Fermata has spent experimenting with different methods of arrangement and composition. Says the artist, "I aimed to prevent myself from overthinking the musical material, instead focusing on shaping and warping sound so that it shared the same alive/imperfect nature of the recorded soundscapes each piece is inspired by." Fermata is the project of Harry Smith, and it is highly complex, accomplished and nuanced for such a young artist. Embracing the full spectrum of electronic music, field recordings and sound design, Salvaged Space is a deeply rewarding listen with a strong feel of the different geographies involved, giving a sense of linear and temporal travel.

PRIMITIVE KNOT Thee Opener Of The Way Cassette
Cassette version. Hailing from Manchester, UK, Primitive Knot have created a cult underground following with their prolific output and aura of arcane mystery. Primitive Knot cover a lot of musical ground, from motorik Krautrock to primitive thrashing doom metal, garage rock to the kind of industrial pop bombast associated with latter-era Sisters of Mercy. Yet at all times, the sound is pure Primitive Knot. Thee Opener Of The Way sees Primitive Knot exploring the spiritual outer realms with drone, doom and dark ambient methodology, delivering over an hour of shamanic cosmic drift. Thee Opener Of The Ways collects the sold-out tape releases of DOOM I (2017) and DOOM II (2018), combining them with the tracks "Thee Opener Of The Way" and "Devotion And Decay In Interstitial Space" to bring this material to a wider audience in a cohesive album format.

HAINO, KEIJI Watashi Dake? LP
Repressed; Black Editions present the first vinyl reissue of Keiji Haino's stunning debut album Watashi Dake?, originally released in 1981. This first ever edition released outside of Japan features the artist's originally intended metallic gold and silver jacket artwork. Over the last fifty years few musicians or performers have created as monumental and uncompromising a body of work as that of Keiji Haino. Through a vast number of recordings and performances, Haino has staked out a ground all his own, creating a language of unparalleled intensity that defies any simple classification. For all this, his 1981 debut album Watashi Dake? has remained enigmatic. Originally released in a small edition by the legendary Pinakotheca label, the album was heard by only a select few in Japan and far fewer overseas. Original vinyl copies became impossibly rare and highly sought after the world over. Watashi Dake? presents a haunting vision -- stark vocals, whispered and screamed, punctuate dark silences. Intricate and sharp guitar figures interweave, repeat, and stretch, trance-like, emerging from dark recesses. Written and composed on the spot -- Haino's vision is one of deep spiritual depths that distantly evokes 1920s blues and medieval music -- yet is unlike anything ever committed to record before or since. Produced in close cooperation with Keiji Haino and legendary photographer Gin Satoh. Coupled with starkly minimal packaging, featuring the now iconic cover photographs by Gin Satoh, the album is a startling and fully realized artistic statement. Housed in custom printed deluxe Stoughton tip-on jackets, including black on black inserts, extras, and hand-colored finishes; Remastered by Elysian Masters and cut by Bernie Grundman Mastering; Pressed to high quality vinyl at RTI; Includes download code.

BLANCMANGE Wanderlust LP
LP version. Blancmange's Wanderlust is ten songs composed by Neil Arthur and arranged, co-produced and mixed with Benge (Wrangler/Creep Show) at the latter's Memetune Studios. This is the pair's third album together. Wanderlust is focused on similar themes but there's a new energy to the approach - wistfulness turning to anger; dislocation morphing into a powerful desire to be somewhere else, and always a sense of someone fighting for forward motion, dreams, family and the joys of life while seeing, as Arthur puts it, "the pretense of a normal world being erased." This spirit is also in the music, which is vital, percussive, and full of analog machine-noise and chunky bass lines.

SUICIDE Live 1977-1978 6CD
Restocked; new lower pricing. Limited edition of 3000, 6CD set. Audio verité recordings (mastered by the incomparable Denis Blackham) of Suicide playing live from September 1977 to August 1978. These recordings cover most of their early shows at CBGBs and Max's Kansas City, plus their first-ever tour across Europe and the UK, these being their dates outside the USA. As you will hear, a crucial year in Suicide's development as both musicians and performers and their mission to stretch the label of punk rock to the very limit. The package includes a 40-page booklet of Suicide & Red Star Records memorabilia (including very rare Red Star press releases) from the personal archives of Howard Thompson, the A&R man that signed Suicide to UK label Bronze Records. Only the infamous 23 Minutes Over Brussels has been legally released before. From soundcheck and post-gig snippets to crowd noise to a radio advertisement for Our Price Record Stores, these recordings are raw and real. From the liner notes: "This set of recordings are not for the faint hearted, nor is it the ideal place to start for those first time listeners seeking an easy entry into the dark and decidedly queasy world of Alan Vega and Marty Rev's proto-futuristic, low- tech sci-fi musical that they launched on a mostly uncaring world as music group Suicide. Howard Thompson's archive was originally made purely for his personal reference based on a joyless recognition that he was right there seeing history in the making. We've presented the gigs in the order they happened, all the better to hear how the Suicide live experience develops. If you want homogenized, sanitized, tweaked and combed, P.C.'d 'punk,' put this baby back on eBay and sell it for profit to one who maybe really wants the use of these leather black skrying mirrors." --Paul Smith, Blastfirstpetite (2008)

QLUSTER Elemente LP+CD
LP version. Includes CD. Elemente -- album number seven from the third incarnation of the legendary krautronic project Kluster/Cluster springs a surprise with a minor sensation: sequencer lines. Using an array of exclusively analogue instruments, Hans-Joachim Roedelius, Onnen Bock, and Armin Metz have recorded eight tracks which, at one and the same time, are intrinsically hypnotic and sublimely beautiful. In principle, Elemente was created in much the same fashion as earlier Qluster albums: the three musicians met up in Schönberg, a remote hamlet in northern Mecklenburg. The eight pieces were distilled from the original recordings of their lengthy improvised sessions, with additional elements added to only three of the tracks in the production process: a synthesizer melody for "Zeno", a prepared piano for "Xymelan" and a computer beat for "Tatum". First special feature on the new album: the "tools of the trade". In their choice of equipment, Qluster reach back to their own history as Cluster, more than forty years ago, when legendary albums like 1974's Zuckerzeit (LR 333LP), 1976's Sowiesoso (BB 039CD/LP), and 1981's Curiosum (BB 038CD/LP) were made. Elemente has been crafted exclusively with analog instruments: a range of analog synthesizers, rhythm machines, a Farfisa organ, a Fender Rhodes piano, and various effects devices plus -- second special feature and making its debut in the band's narrative -- a 1970s sequencer playing an endless loop of manually recorded melodies, fed through effects and equalizers to achieve that typically hypnotic sequencer character. Listen out for them on "Perpetuum", "Xymelan", "Tatum" and "Lindow". By way of contrast, "Weite" and "Infinitum" unfold in vast echo chambers, free of metrics. Between these two very different musical forms lie "Zeno" and "Symbia". The former pulsates with long deep breaths beneath delicate sequences of notes emanating from the ARP 2600, the latter, "Symbia", layers a songlike Rhodes piano melody over an echoing, rhythmic Farfisa organ chord. After four electronic productions and two piano albums, Qluster now invite you to visit eight new and beguilingly beautiful worlds of sound on Elemente.

48 CHAIRS 70% Paranoid LP
Documenting 48 Chairs, the unlikely coupling of British free jazz bastion Lol Coxhill and the saucy synth pop don't-wannabes known as Gerry And The Holograms, 70% Paranoid is a rare incognito full-length album. It bridges the micro-niches of electronic jazz and punk jazz from a band formed in 1979 at an axis where DIY and new wave hadn't quite collided! With sprinklings of post-punk female vocals worthy of PragVEC and Suburban Lawns, featuring angular art rock paeans to voodoo dolls and closed-circuit TV, this privately pressed LP comes directly from the man who gave Factory Records's Martin Hannett some of his best ideas and wrote the blueprint for Manchester's new musical order. Imagine if Talking Heads became Mark E Smith's backing band for a week before being sacked for wearing a Frank Zappa t-shirt while Eric Dolphy forgot to take his headphones off. If that sounds attractive, one should be paying double. A genuine lost moment from the post-punk era with progressive pop credentials from the university of Alberto Y Lost Trios Paranoias before everyone got a job at the local Factory. Why are you the only person who doesn't know about this? As one of the few fully formed feature-length album projects of the immediate independent post-punk era, the 1981 album 70% Paranoid by 48 Chairs is still often referred to as one of Manchester's best-kept secrets by many of the anti-genre's most switched-on collectors and critics. Combining the talents of the squat-pop synthesists who brought you Gerry And The Holograms with the free jazz Brit-skronk of Lol Coxhill and gelled together with vocals by female punk one-timer Fran Kershner, this seldom-travelled, hand-assembled LP was both deeply underground and wildly overambitious, earning it an inverted status as a genuine "unknown pleasure". Politely waiting in queue for delayed accolades to this day, 70% Paranoid was born out of a direct reaction to the short-lived journalistic cranny known as "new-music" which bridged the pigeonholes of punk-rock and new-wave allowing a small wide-eyed flock to escape the coup in the process. Evading the final nails in the coffin of prog and jazz-rock and dreading the reverse reverb of the New Romantic onslaught, a certain breed of overqualified underdogs, with small plates and huge Zappa-tites took the Mancunian manifesto of do-it-yourself and decided to do-it-your-own-way instead, with a secret hope that the book shelf was gonna collapse either way.

Most of the compilation samples the best of Dinosaur Jr.'s output after signing with Warner Bros in 1990, including hit singles such as 'The Wagon', 'Whatever's Cool With Me', 'Out There', 'Start Choppin' and 'Feel The Pain'. 2018 repress; Gatefold 180 gram vinyl reissue, originally released in 1971. "In this long-awaited masterwork, Harry Partch rises above all attempts at descriptive containment and becomes quite simply heroic. Delusions Of The Fury, proceeding from tragedy to comedy, is nothing less than the full, ritualistic expression, in vocal instrumental and corporeal terms, of the reconciliation by the living both with death and with life. It is a total Partch statement, incorporating voices, mime, his celebrated instruments, dance, lighting and staging, all working to express this philosophical concept. Delusion Of The Fury, as is to be expected, is not cast in the common dramatic/musical mold." -- Eugene Paul

PARTCH, HARRY The World Of Harry Partch LP
2018 repress; 180 gram exact repro reissue, originally released in 1969. "The World of Harry Partch collects three of his best short pieces. 'Daphne of the Dunes' (1967) is a side-long update of 'Windsong' written for dance. The melodic segments are given more emphasis than usual for a Partch piece, and harmonically this is one of his best with arpeggiated glides/cries of the Harmonic Canons evoking our sympathies. Meter changes almost measure by measure, with one section in 31/16 meter; another (polymetric) section consists of 4/4-7/4 over 4/8-7/8! Needless to say, while being very physical, Partch's music isn't something you can easily tap your foot to. What's most important is that it works. Partch was not one to introduce musical complexity merely for its own sake, another factor that separated him from his contemporaries. Not only are the rhythms complex, but they are performed at a frantic pace unequaled by any music I've hard (save perhaps the inhumanly fast player piano pieces of Conlon Nancarrow!). This is characteristic of most of Partch's works, though I think 'Daphne' is one of the most successful and exhilarating. 'Barstow -- Eight Hitchhiker Inscriptions from a Highway Railing at Barstow, California' was composed in 1941 as part of 'The Wayward.' It offers such statements as 'Go to 538 East Lemon Avenue for an easy handout' and 'Looking for millionaire wife...' This charismatic piece is successful due to the contrasting of Partch's intoning voice with others in the ensemble and to increased instrumental emphasis. Last is 'Castor and Pollux' in a more modern performance than From the Music of Harry Partch, with greater vigor and fidelity. The World of Harry Partch is an excellent introduction to his works that comes highly recommended." -- Surface Noise

LIRAZ Naz LP
LP version. Sidestepping between Iran and Israel, singer and film star Liraz drops her new album, playing with past and present, where the role of women in society takes center stage. Taking cues from Iran's fiery and defiant female musical icons like Googoosh and Ramesh, Liraz's debut album Naz reimagines their fighting spirit from the '70s. She sings in Farsi and the influences from those Persian forebears, and Israeli producer Rejoicer provides the bounce of hip-hop and electronica. Raised in Tel Aviv in Israel, her parents are from Iran yet political circumstances have meant that she's never been able to visit. She has a successful career as an actor in both Israel and Hollywood, acting with the likes of Philip Seymour-Hoffman (A Late Quartet) and Naomi Watts (Fair Game), and has spent the past decade whilst on film set location, picking up Iranian music. Liraz's music has made her a beacon for a nascent movement around women's rights -- inside Iran and out. It was LA, around 2008, when she first heard music in a mold that pricked her preconceptions about the role of women in her parents' home country. It was in Googoosh's music that she first saw a public image of a female Iranian swaggering with confidence. In "Nozi Nozi", she prods at the idea of "noz". It alludes to an Iranian archetype of a sweetly-smiling wife, subtly trying to wrest what she wants out of her husband. The music itself flips the cultural reference points at its core too: a repeated, Persian string refrain, building up intensity in tandem with Liraz's vocals, is put in fresh light by a spartan, swaggering beat. A key part of her music has been bringing the influence of her forebears in line with a contemporary perspective. It's been ten years since her interest in Iranian music was first sparked as her travels gave space for her to hunt for musical discoveries. Several of the tracks are covers of Iranian artists, like "Hala Bavar" which is a version of one of Googoosh's songs. It has been meeting her producer Rejoicer, also based in Tel Aviv, which has helped bring the Naz project to life. Playing him the artists which were her reference points, and guiding him through Iran's gamut of traditional instruments, the chemistry between them was immediately obvious: it's made for the hypnotic, heavy-weighted style that gives her tracks a powerful directness.

JONES (MATT JONES), MB ROK Spy LP
High quality weirdo political pop from MB Jones (Jee Jee Band, EM Records/Feeding Tube): sparse, quirky and strange with English and Korean vocals. Recorded in Busan, Republic of Korea by former US special agent MB Jones, ROK Spy documents both his stay in a country on the verge of a nuclear conflict and his mission there (for obvious confidential reasons, the purpose of this mission is only to be referred to in an allusive way). While most of his personal belongings have disappeared (or more likely, been destroyed), Drama is very thankful for the safe receipt of a USB stick containing seven songs recorded in Autumn 2017, alongside a drawing and a few handwritten notes. Drama now shares these with you in the form of a new label. The circumstances under which it was born lead to it being called "Drama". This release is DRAMA1. The content of this LP is a seemingly disparate set of pop-not-pop tunes, flirting with dance music on songs like the apocalyptical disco "Nuclear War" or the bizarre and mind puzzling boogie "Pusan Perimeter". Though it is quite hard to put words on MB Jones's productions (one may accurately call it an "oddball" of a record), his musical testimony may sit somewhere in-between Holger Czukay's most narrative pieces and Arthur Russell's most cheerful moments, sharing with these two brilliant musicians a genuine feeling of intimacy emanating from each second of his songs. The only thing that may be said without a doubt is that these seven songs are the product of someone whose ear has been attentive and receptive to all sorts of contemporary musical genres (from trap to experimental electronic music and EDM). It's still not clear whether the cryptic lyrics evoke situations which already occurred, whether they are oracles, some insider's warnings or whether they are the product of a mind in a hallucinatory state. On "Poison Pill" -- the closing song -- he is particularly ambiguous: "the CIA bought me a trip/I put the tab under my lip/ They want to build a shopping mall/On the DMZ wall". The interpretation is up to you. Edition of 300.

DUB SPENCER & TRANCE HILL Christmas In Dub CD
The first Christmas album of the year, Christmas In Dub, has landed, and it sounds a lot like dub. Last Christmas seems only moments away, but that hasn't stopped these four doughty Swiss musicians from decking the halls in their studio, getting the bass speakers to rumble and the loops to trill. In dulci dub jubilo! In their low-slung reindeer racing sleigh, Dub Spencer & Trance Hill glide through the night of nights with twelve box-fresh cover versions pumping through their speakers, utterly unafraid of overworking a cliché. Statistically, "love" is probably the most common subject in song lyrics, and many trite lines have been dedicated to it, closely followed by "Christmas". Now, this Zurich/Lucerne collective have lavished their charming, futuristic sound elements on the topic, pounding through this winter wonderland, hovering somewhere between pop, dub and surreal electronics, liberally spiced with retro roots rocker attitude with a lavish scattering of warm analog delay and reverb effects. This album sits skillfully right at the intersection of elevator muzak and elegant dub, and it has a very simple, unpretentious message: Without a groove there's no dub, and no Christmas either. For some of the tracks, it's only the second time round that you realize which Christmas song is being covered. The bass line is crucial, as it is usually the instrument that plays the Christmassy themes. "Never change a winning song", thought Dub Spencer & Trance Hill, instead opting to give these themes a much slacker treatment. The scent of fir branches, incense, the Northern Lights and interesting biscuits comes together with a warm Hammond organ, funky guitars, rich drum grooves and a bass that is practically subsonic to create an intelligent, mischievous and leftfield masterpiece. Following their impressive encounters with artists such as William S. Burroughs, Lee Perry, Dieter Meier, and Ken Boothe, the internationally-lauded Swiss band have now added their idiosyncratic spin on Christmas, treating Santa to a dub makeover with neo-folk collages in reindeer jumpers and minimal dub with space for recorders. Christmas simply couldn't sound any better or more flamboyant!

ONEOHTRIX POINT NEVER Returnal LP
2018 repress; gatefold LP version. Returnal is the fourth album from Daniel Lopatin's Oneohtrix Point Never project, after Betrayed In The Octagon (Deception Island, 2007), Zones Without People (Arbor, 2009) and Russian Mind (No Fun, 2009). All 3 albums being superbly compiled on the Rifts double CD set (No Fun, 2009). It sees Lopatin fine-tune his craft for the creation of deep atmospheres and textures even further. Starting off with the mind-blowing triptych of "Nil Admiari"/"Describing Bodies"/"Stress Waves," which fires off into a noise/rhythm excess before entering a zone of relative calm, building to the melancholy of the final part. This sets the tone perfectly for the album's title track, a stunning, out-of-this-world ballad featuring Lopatin's near-desperate vocal delivery, ending what could be seen as one of his most chilling and thought-provoking sides to-date. The atmosphere is slightly lifted as the darkened sun comes up over the ruins on "Pelham Island Road" and "Where Does Time Go," with the album closing with edgy broken beats and the fourth-world possible landscapes of "Preyouandi," which fades into the distance with echoes of the "Returnal" chorus closing the loop. What's burnt into memory here is Lopatin's love affair with the long, slow path back home... the cycle... the hypnotic sector... the ghost in the machine... and whether people are making dance music or hip-hop or space head-music or metal, the ouroboros is present in every sector -- as it was in Bach's study, and in the elephant songs of the Ituri forests. Instrumentation: Akai AX-60, Roland Juno-60, Roland MSQ-700, Korg Electribe ES-1, Voice. Recorded using a personal computer. Mastered by James Plotkin. Tape-op & additional engineering by Al Carlson. Awesome spot-varnished cover design by Stephen O'Malley.

HOLCOMB & WADE WARD, ROSCOE The Music of Roscoe Holcomb & Wade Ward LP
Fantôme Phonographique present a reissue of The Music of Roscoe Holcomb & Wade Ward, originally released in 1962. A magical collection of Kentucky's own Roscoe Holcomb, one of the most legendary figures of Appalachian music and a huge influence on the '60s folk scene, and Wade Ward, a Virginia fiddle and clawhammer banjo player whose style has been often imitated. Playing banjo, guitar, and singing in that beautiful high lonesome sound, Roscoe Holcomb covers the first side of this LP, in his wild and raw style. A coal miner for most of his life, Roscoe knew the world he sang of all too well, his authenticity is unassailable. Wade Ward handles the second side, with banjo, fiddle, and vocals, playing in the Galax style and with more composure than the at times unhinged Holcomb. The last two tracks on Ward's side come from the Bogtrotters Band. The idea behind this recording was to showcase the extremely diverse styles that two banjo players both working in the old-time tradition could have, even if they were raised only a few hundred miles from each other. Though he found some success in the '60s thanks to the Greenwich Village scene, Holcomb stayed a laborer in Kentucky and passed away in 1981 at the age of 68, suffering for years from asthma and emphysema, the results of his years in the coal mines. Similarly, Ward spent his life as a farmer, despite his musical talent. What we have here is essential, and authentic American, from two of the largest names in old-time music. Comes in a heavy sleeve with a hand-numbered sticker; Includes A3 poster insert with liner notes; Edition of 500.

SONE INSTITUTE Where Moth and Rust Consume Cassette
Cassette version. Where Moth and Rust Consume takes the multitude of influences always present in Sone Institute's work to create a record he describes as his "pop album". It is, however, very much one which builds on the weird and disorienting approach which set him out from the crowd when Front And Follow first started back in 2007. Where Moth and Rust Consume is at once living and also decaying, uplifting and deeply unsettling. Sone Institute says "I wanted to create electronic pop music, but from the only possible perspective I have." This release also marks the first volume of a new series on Front And Follow, Ex Post Facto, which seeks to celebrate experimental electronic music in all its forms, showcasing new work and old, exploring the relationship between the current and the past, how they influence and shape each other and the label's experiences of them. For each volume in the series Front And Follow ask artists to create a new project of their own choosing and present it alongside a retrospective of their past output. DISTANCE, LIGHT & SKY Gold Coast CD
Glitterhouse announce Distance, Light & Sky's second album, Gold Coast. Chris Eckman (The Walkabouts), Chantal Acda (Sleepingdog, True Bypass), and avant jazz percussionist Eric Thielemans (EARR Ensemble) form the group, and Gold Coast shares a couple of things with its predecessor as Eckman explains: "We again recorded the album with our friend Phill Brown. Phill has one of the most incredible recording histories of anyone from the rock music era, having been involved with records by The Rolling Stones, Bob Marley, Beth Gibbons, and many more. He also worked with The Walkabouts on two albums and more recently on Chantal's Bounce Back (2017). Phill has a wonderful ability to bring space and texture into his recordings. He places microphones in magical spots and searches for unexpected ambient sounds that beautifully compliment the material. We wanted to work together again at Sono Studios because not only do we all feel comfortable there, but the large recording space provides plenty of options for sonic exploration. For example, the room has a grainy, ethereal sense of reverb that almost provides an extra instrument to the ensemble. We felt that we hadn't exhausted the ideas that such a studio provides and so we enthusiastically returned. We recorded the tracks with all three of us playing and singing at the same time. We left the expressive qualities of the performances as they were, embracing irregularities and spontaneous decisions and so-called mistakes. A few elements were added, but the basic triangle of Eric, Chantal and myself was left mostly uncorrupted. More than on the first album, we thought of the band as a single entity. Chantal wrote lyrics and music for me to sing and I did the same for her and the songs found their essence after arranged and buoyed by Eric's drums." While there is a distinct melancholy to most of these songs, there is not a sense of resignation. These are songs of community, in how they were fashioned and in the emotions they ultimately embrace. The narrators are like most of us in these times, whittled down by chaos and disappointment, but not about to be broken. The fight is still there.

PAUL, JOHN No Filter LP
LP version. "No Filter is the rightful extension of the Sleaford Mods idea in my opinion, but don't let that drive you into thinking this is some rehash. John Paul has, with the help of Rat and Steve Underwood, created a horrible account of modern forgotten England from the edge of his stool in the corner of the pub away from all the hard men he once ran with. It's the re-awakening of a mind trying to tune into truth and it's brutal. His wordplay and observations are near exceptional and at some points, and like all good music, it nearly devours itself as it tells musical convention to get fucked. The music too, is so fucking crap it's beautiful, like the mundane back ground music sent out from head office to all its pubs. No Filter has for me in some ways pushed the envelope of the Workers' Tale, the arrival into mid-life with its disgust for the old shit you did and the attitudes that came with all that. It's solid." --Jason Williamson (Sleaford Mods).

MOCKY A Day At United LP
LP version; includes download. A Day At United, the name practically says it all. An album recorded in a single day, no rehearsals, no second takes. Just Mocky with friends, instruments, and some songs sketched in the week previous. Oh yeah, and a recording studio. United Recording, in fact. The legendary independent studio, financed by Sinatra among others is a refuge for artists seeking more control, or maybe "less interference". A Day At United is not an album about control, it's about putting certain conditions in place, then letting go, letting the magic happen. In an age of computer-led precision, this is an album about the struggle for imperfection. "I've always been inspired by the story of Miles Davis recording Kind Of Blue (1959)," says Mocky, "going into the studio with John Coltrane and Bill Evans, and making an album in real-time." Not that Mocky, who led the session from his drum kit, compares himself to the jazz greats; he doesn't even call himself a jazz musician. If this is his "jazz" album, it's because of the process that yielded it. The process began with a recording date, and to ensure a "classic" quality on the record, Mocky got together with producer Justin Stanley (Prince, Leonhard Cohen) who ended up recording and co-producing the album. "When everyone was in position, the charts in front them, the sticks in my hand, it was the first time I actually considered what I was about to do on drums. It was free-styling. Hearing the songs as they were being recorded, in complete real-time." Looking back on the origin of the album, Mocky sees it as an extension of his free-flowing Mocky and Friends nights. Picture a revolving cast of collaborators and co-creators, convening on the rooftop of the Ace Hotel in downtown LA, making music in the moment. "I wanted to attain a level of intention that was different from anything I had done on an album before," Mocky says. "Rather than playing all the instruments, I just drummed and let the ideas filter through this group of artists in real-time. If you multi-track or edit, the intention becomes a conceptual thing, considered and refined. At United, it was about this creative urgency. For me, it was waking up one day and, at the end of it, having an album done."

ÄTNA are singer and multi-instrumentalist Inéz and drummer Demian; if you listen to their music it's hard to believe that this mighty sound was crafted by only two musicians. But the most jaw-dropping aspect remains the distinctive music itself. On La Famiglia - An Audiovisual Suite, ÄTNA unfold an energetic, highly percussive, dark and twisted version of pop that isn't afraid to take risks. Their music is an adventure, to say the least, riding between powerful extremes whether sensual tenderness or raw furiosity. Somewhere between James Blake, Fever Ray and White Stripes the two artists have created their own microcosm.

2018 repress. Keyhole presents the double vinyl edition of this remarkable set, also available on CD (KH 9036CD). This performance was taped for radio broadcast in 1968, very soon after The Byrds' new line-up of Roger McGuinn, Clarence White, Gene Parsons, and John York had coalesced. Despite the recent tumultuous departures of Chris Hillman and Gram Parsons, the band turns in a superb series of performances featuring a fascinating selection of songs (several of which they rarely played), with especially noteworthy guitar work from the great Clarence White. It's presented here with remastered sound, complete with background notes and rare photographs, making it a vital document for all connoisseurs of '60s rock. Pressed on 180-gram vinyl.

RADIGUE, ELIANE Virtuoso Listening DVD
2012 release. "Eliane Radigue is a justly celebrated figure in electronic music. Her work has roots in Europe's post-war avant garde, and she has been linked with the pioneers of American minimalism such as Terry Riley, La Monte Young, and Steve Reich, but her monumental meditative compositions have taken a singular path, transporting the listener into new realms of sound. In June 2011 in London, the Spitalfields Summer Music Festival paid tribute to Radigue's entire body of work, and the Grande Dame of long duration music was enthusiastically welcomed by a new generation of admirers young enough to be her grandchildren. Between 1967 and 2000, Eliane Radigue composed more than 20 pieces of electronic music. For a composer who mostly worked alone, to collaborate closely with musicians during the composition process is an epiphany. In June 2011 in London, the Spitalfields Summer Music Festival paid tribute to her entire body of work; the Grande Dame of long duration music was enthusiastically welcomed by a new generation of admirers young enough to be her grandchildren." VA The Colours of the Prism, the Mechanics of Time 2DVD
2012 release. "Featured Artists: John Cage, La Monte Young, Pauline Oliveros, Terry Riley, Steve Reich, Philip Glass, Meredith Monk, Gavin Bryars, Richie Hawtin. From John Cage to techno, through minimalism and post-modernism. This film was inspired by the itinerary of a oegap-bridger: Daniel Caux, a musicologist, essayist and radio producer, who made endless discoveries in the fields of experimental, minimalist, repetitive, postmodern and techno music. His contribution is all the more important in that these past four decades have been particularly rich in terms of creations, inventions and experimentation. His recent passing has reversed the roles, since many of the very musicians that he ardently supported wished to be present in this film. This film embraces a significant part of 20th century musical creation as seen from this "Daniel Caux belvedere" and bears witness to the music that these major figures are inextricably associated with, as well as their on-going creativity. The bonus to this film is based on the passionate opinions of Daniel Caux, musicologist, essayist, activist and radio producer, promoter and friend to all of the musicians present in the film." O YAMA O O Yama O LP
"O Yama O explores a certain domestic and democratic quality of everyday life, born through associations to folk music of Japan and a folding of myth, tradition, and routine; the non-spectacular and the sublime. Formed of musician and artist Rie Nakajima and Cafe OTO co-founder Keiko Yamamoto, the group has performed since 2014 at venues and festivals such as noshowspace, Ikon Gallery, Wysing Arts Centre, Supernormal, Borealis Festival, Mayhem, and allEars Festival. Nakajima's performance often focuses on the use of found and kinetic objects, using modest items such as rice bowls, toys, clockwork, balloons and small motors as instruments to create a 'micro orchestra.' Elements are layered into impressive and immersive atmospheres. Yamamoto alternatively floats and charges through this with body and voice; chanting, incanting, thundering, whispering, stamping on the floor. Their debut album consolidates their musical conversations into keenly paced studio music, the duo working with additional instrumentation and a resolved focus on melody to provide vivid portraits of folkloric Japan in song. They move between pop and the philosophical, defined by the overall space afforded to texture and movement. In small, delicate sound an intimate musical climate is established that reflects on life, telling stories of improvised clockwork, whispered dreams, small movements of the hand and the rhythm to be found in the shuffle of a deck of cards. Grandly theatric and dramatic flourishes add solidity to these illustrations, operas driven by the swooping energy and power of Yamamoto's voice can be playful or emotionally charged, particularly when the duo arrange themselves in ensemble with violinist Billy Steiger and percussionist Marie Roux. Production by David Cunningham creates the shadowy presence of a left-field Flying Lizards dub-wise depth that adds subtle strangeness to the atmosphere. The result is something raw, full-bodied; full of energy, grace and mystery."

HARMONIOUS THELONIOUS Petrolia LP
Since 2008 Düsseldorf-based producer and live wizard Stefan Schwander deeply concentrates on his always evolving electronic venture named Harmonious Thelonious. It besprinkles the world with fractional musical structures in the spirits of American minimal music, in order to immingle them with African rhythm patterns. Exceptional hypnotic opiates, enlarged with twisted harmonies and tricky rhythm archetypes, and all heavily danceable. After five magnetic albums for labels like Emotional Response and his old home base Italic as well as a highly-acclaimed string of EPs for in-demand platforms like Asafa, Diskant, Disk, Kontra-Muzik, Meakusma, The Trilogy Tapes or Versatile Records, he has now produced the arresting Petrolia LP for Marmo Music, a label that is itself not new to Harmonious Thelonious. On the label's second release he remixed Tru West on The DOWC Part 2 (2014); his "Sunset Liturgy" fingerprints are audible with a moving remix. Now he delivers six epic tunes that only partly dance the familiar Harmonious Thelonious dance. There are deep traces from Africa and Arabia, there is the polyrhythmic witchery that makes his music special, but in contrast his new tunes are more mental than his former ones. They have a menacing industrial feel but yet continue to be enlarged with the enchanting spirits of the land of the Sahara. Furthermore, there is a slight manic touch arising from nervous electronic and foremost organic melodies. The live-played jittering is coming from the Berlin-based experimental musician Ghazi Barakat, also known under monikers like Pharoah Chromium or Crème de Hassan for mind-shredding ambient, drone, experimental, noise, industrial, free jazz, and free improvisation music from beyond. For Harmonious Thelonious, Barakat, who also worked with Marmo Music artist Günther Schickert on the collaboration album OXTLR (2014), tuned his wind instruments, Rauschpfeife and Kangling in a elflock-stricken Master Musicians of Jajouka way. Instead of giving them a prominent lead position, however, Schwander deeply implements their tones into his propulsive creations to evoke a modern rhythmic meltdown of Occident versus Orient, exhaling a deeply absorbing soul. This a record whose psychedelic energy fits perfect into the Marmo Music cosmos, a world where the progressiveness of the 70's continue to live in the current to disband all white-bread musical norms for the energy of music without classes.

SYSTEM Plus 2LP
Double LP version. Includes printed inner sleeve and download code. Plus, the new album from Danish electronic trio System, is a collaborative effort with piano magician Nils Frahm. Frahm's purpose-built improvisations on synth, organ and piano served as source material for the members of System (Thomas Knak, Anders Remmer, and Jesper Skaaning), who merged his warm acoustic tones with their minimalist digitalism and to translate their distinctive electronics into vivid soundscapes. Over two years in the making, the resulting nine tracks are as sonically as they are touching. Ranging from the mellow bliss of the title track to echoes of '90s and 2000s electronica and ambient sequences with mesmerizing movements and sounds, the blending of piano and digital tones and noises into emotive pieces recalls the work of Alva Noto and Ryuichi Sakamoto, though System and Frahm come to quite different results. Knak met Frahm at one of his concerts in Copenhagen; staying in touch, they exchanged thoughts and ideas. Two years later, Remmer was also introduced to Frahm; serious ideas for a collaboration formed. As Frahm was a fan of System's self-titled debut album (2002), their talks centered around dub and minimalism, elements that constitute most of System's music. This in mind, System began producing sketches and brought them to Frahm´s studio in Berlin, where they recorded ten hours of him playing to their drafts. Back in Copenhagen, they decided to change direction. "Nils had told us about his fascination with our debut album, so we tried to rediscover this minimal clicks 'n' cuts era. But hearing Nils playing to our rhythmic beds, we felt the need to scrap those beats and instead head in a more cinematic direction." They started building new pieces from Frahm's recordings, maintaining some of the minimal and static quality while new layers of synth sounds and noises created a richer and more organic quality compared to older System albums. The solo projects of Thomas (Opiate), Anders (Dub Tractor) and Jesper (Acustic) relied on steady beats or rhythmic material, so the productions of Plus, with their acoustic and melodic elements, ambient layers and cinematic moods, sees them move into new areas. The trio thus avoided copying what they had done years ago, having built a reputation as Denmark's originators within electronic music in the '90s. Plus is a triumphant example of collaborative experimentation and may be the dawn of a new era for System. CD version comes in digipak.

VOOLVA The Stars Are Ours LP
The Stars Are Ours is the debut album of Spanish band Voolva, featuring the first-ever rock opera in outer space. It follows the adventures of a beautiful and harebrained couple on their unplanned quest to unwittingly save the cosmos. The varied styles render a tiled patchwork that defies categorization, where echoes of pop, rock, punk, reggae, funk and electronica can be heard among a wide array of influences, from Frank Zappa to The Kinks and nods to Hiroshi Sato, Jean-Jacques Perrey, King Crimson, and Oskar Sala. The Stars Are Ours is boldly recorded in retro stereophonic sound. Written as a stage musical, the album narrates the (moderately) epic voyage of Linda and Toto, a young, gorgeous, and flighty couple who, after an unfortunate - albeit predictable - stunt at the casino, find themselves abducted by an alien spaceship. Overly hormonal by all galactic standards, the earthlings will undergo zero-gravity surgery, visit alien taverns of ill repute, fight menacing yet snazzy robots, and get VIP tickets aboard the planet-starcraft Absurdia. Aided by a cohort of singing and dancing extraterrestrial sidekicks, our confused heroes will inadvertently save the cosmos from a villainous overlord that just barely refrains from stroking Angora cats, avoiding cliché by the skin of his teeth. Leader Rafael Merino is a Spanish musician currently settled in Paris. He has also lived in New York, Boston and London, all places where his lawyers firmly declare that he has no outstanding warrants. Previously a member of such bands as Orgasmical, Motherglue, and Payola Victims, he's been a well-known character - especially to debt collectors -in Madrid's underground music scene for over 20 years. Voolva reunites some of the finest musicians in Spain today, as well as notorious international guest stars such as Theremin master Dorit Chrysler and Thomas Suire (from the French combo Infecticide). This oddball project has also aroused the interest of other luminaries like Tim Blake (Gong, Crystal Machine), who provided hospitality and advice, and world-class science-fiction illustrator Chris Moore, who generously provides the brilliant artwork. The album has been awarded the first prize at the "Festival des Idées" of the Sorbonne University in Paris. Download includes 101-page script.

GEARS, THE Rockin' At Ground Zero LP
Los Angeles' late 1970s punk rock didn't enjoy the same recognition as the New York and London scenes, and many great LA bands couldn't sniff out major label deals. The Gears' 1980 album Rockin' At Ground Zero was one of the very best of the new DIY punk rock indie releases. With powerhouse vocalist Axxel G Reese, the high impact guitar of Kidd Spike, bassist Brian Redz and the late, great Dave Drive on drums, The Gears roared out hard hitting, irresistible songs with a driving energy wrenched from the gut of Los Angeles. Influenced equally by the Sex Pistols and the old school rock & roll they grew up with, The Gears' peerless songs are fraught with classic themes -- adolescent anxiety ("Teenage Brain"), restlessness ("Keep Movin'"), desperate romance ("Baby Runaround," "High School Girls") and defiantly rockin' through the end of the world ("The Last Chord" and "Rockin' At Ground Zero"). This record captures one of the most underrated, highest quality groups of the era -- a solid, classic set of pure Los Angeles punk & roll.

VA Welcome To Zamrock! Vol. 2: How Zambia's Liberation Led To A Rock Revolution 2LP
2018 repress; Double LP version. "By the mid-1970s, the Southern African nation known as the Republic of Zambia had fallen on hard times. Though the country's first president Kenneth Kaunda had thrown off the yoke of British colonialism, the new federation found itself under his self-imposed, autocratic rule. Conflict loomed on all sides of this landlocked nation. Kaunda protected Zambia from war, but his country descended into isolation and poverty. This is the environment in which the '70s rock revolution that has come to be known as Zamrock flourished. Fuzz guitars were commonplace, as were driving rhythms as influenced by James Brown's funk as Jimi Hendrix's rock predominated. Musical themes, mainly sung in the country's constitutional language, English, were often bleak. In present day Zambia, Zamrock markers were few. Only a small number of the original Zamrock godfathers that remained in the country survived through the late '90s. AIDS decimated this country, and uncontrollable inflation forced the Zambian rockers that could afford to flee into something resembling exile. This was not a likely scene to survive -- but it did. Welcome To Zamrock!, presented in two volumes, is an overview of its most beloved ensembles, and a trace of its arc from its ascension, to its fall, to its resurgence. Explore Zambia's liberation and its impact on the country's rock revolution. The book, written by Eothen Alapatt and Leonard Koloko is the first investigation into the Zamrock scene, and is filled with original record artwork and rarely-seen photos of Zamrock's best ensembles."

AGAINST ALL LOGIC 2012-2017 2LP
2018 repress. Nicolas Jaar shows he is paying attention to the masses by issuing a widely called for vinyl press of his A.A.L. (Against All Logic) album 2012-2017. Originally issued as a digital-only release back in February of 2018, it's slowly grown to become one of the most cherished releases in the entire Other People discography. Much like Kerrier District did to disco, A.A.L. (Against All Logic) borrows heavily from the samples and sounds ingrained deep within Jaar's listening habits and evidently a record collection packed to the brim with classic soul, house, and most importantly, funk hooks. Keenly twisting these sounds and filtering them through a studio set up that's leaning heavily on the beefed-up kick drums and reverb units to make a well-executed homage to these sounds, pieced together with the inherent idea of making the listener unable to resist the urge to move, be it in a bedroom, basement, or just sat in work staring at a computer screen. A.A.L. (Against All Logic) is both a well-executed homage to all of the above references, yet also just a really strong and enjoyable record from Nicolas Jaar. HORN, MARIA Kontrapoetik LP
Kontrapoetik is a personal and simultaneously historical investigation, tackling the turmoil-ridden past of composer Maria Horn's home region Ångermanland in northern Sweden, and her own counter-exorcism project thereof. Drawing from archival material, she taps into the conflict of the worker's movement's clash with the Swedish military in the 1930's that nearly triggered a revolution. Before that Ångermanland was the site of an execution of women accused of witchcraft in 1674. Norrland is sometimes referred to as "the colonies" because of the uneven distribution of the wealth generated by its natural resources, little of which is reinvested in the area. Since the 1970's, it has seen depopulation and disintegration of the welfare state. "Ångermanländska Bilder" is based on material from a collection of films that depict the environment of Ångermanland from 1930-1940: the manor houses of the rural community, steamboats transporting timber along the river, power plants, and sawmills. Concurrent with Horn's Ångermanland research, she was part of an artistic research project in the form of a satanic feminist sect. The goal of the sect was to develop a practice of ceremonies and rituals from counter-readings of the Christian genesis narratives, dismantling its misogynist traditions. In these, Lucifer is re-conceptualized as a feminist liberator, and seen as an ally in the struggle against a patriarchy supported by God and the priesthood. Several of the pieces on Kontrapoetik were composed specifically for ceremonial practices, such as "Ave", a composition built from a text by sect member Michelle Jangmyr. Field recordings sourced from the archives of The Härnösand Art Museum thread through magnetic tape, formatting stark portraits of Horn's attested narrative. Harmonically, inspiration is drawn from ancient Swedish pastoral music, minor scales and free contrapuntal progressions. Recordings from Swedish radio were uncovered from the archive and sampled and reinterpreted. The fusion of these sources with mellotron, church organ and Buchla 200 synthesizer creates an immersive music that welcomes other forms of listening, unhinged from the cerebral and guided by intuition. The territories explored by Horn on Kontrapoetik are vast, but at the heart of each piece is a strong fundament of reductionist technique; deceptively simple harmonic progressions are re-fractured through the means of inversion and repetition. Coupled with this is an almost tactile relationship to texture as well as an immaculate sense of the physicality of sound. This work, while saturated by longing and loss, never gives in, but stands steadfastly defiant.

ATKINSON AND JEFRE CANTU-LEDESMA, FELICIA Limpid as the Solitudes LP
Felicia Atkinson and Jefre Cantu-Ledesma's Limpid As The Solitudes cuts through sound-making techniques to enter a new zone of sonic revelations. The record recalls the turn-of-the-century Mille Plateaux glitch era, the warmth of La Monte Young's drones, acousmatic non-space recordings made by GRM artists, 4AD's floor-gazing guitar sound, and blissfully diverse field recordings. But, one could equally equate it with entirely different recording sources. Limpid As The Solitudes has a widescreen sound that is both familiar and unfamiliar. Warm, comforting and also unsettling in unpredictable ways. Deliberate yet exploratory, it's a record composed of opposites and contrasts, following historical guidelines yet also throwing them out of the window. To describe the album as ambient would indicate passive engagement with the sound; leave it to play in the background and one could miss a lot of the joy. Atkinson and Cantu-Ledesma describe the record as a series of postcards - things and sounds that happen vertically as a slow ascension, vessels communicating in dreams. In this collaborative recording, there is a feeling of "becoming" - a concrete sound turns into a electronic sound that turns into a spiral-like melody which then furls/unfurls at the same time. The album title as well as track titles, are all verses stolen from Sylvia Plath's poems, Atkinson notes, "like dropped pearls from a lost collar." Trying further to capture the record's poetic impulses, it reflects "Empathy to objects and nature's elements, meteorological states, seasons that answer to your heart, granular etchings carved and sustained to create a blurred sentimental landscape. The finale is more optimistic than Plath's poetry. Love and lyricism win, the music soaring from deep water to interstellar galaxies." The cover is another key, an image by Julien Carreyn of a young woman wearing destroyed jeans, playing with bubble wrap. The image is intended to give the viewer an eerie 1990's feeling that echoes the recording and films by Hal Hartley or Wong Kar Wai. Be sure to come back to this record more than once; it's then that it's power will work. Recall the sound of a lover, a garden once walked through, an echo of a record once loved. To be appreciated, "Limpid As The Solitudes" requires immersion as if in a hot spring, letting the sounds float and alter perceptions and memories. Mastered and cut by Helmut Erler at D+M. Printed photographs by Julien Carreyn on glossy inner and outer sleeve.

VA Take A Knife And Open My Heart LP+CD
Sound Miracle Recordings presents a collection of thirteen ancient pieces of primitive flamenco music from the 1930s onwards. Flamenco music has been admired throughout the world for centuries. Fascinating unique, esoteric and mysterious, alloy of fire and witchcraft. Flamenco is much more than that. It has something of folk, something of sacred music, something of "blues": it is a unique music in the world, born of many factors and opposite and antagonistic elements, like its country of origin. And like other traditions, it's not just music, it's a way of life. This compilation also brings us echoes of that way of life and aromas of places that today seem distant galaxies. For the connoisseur, names like La Niña de los Peines, Manuel Torre, Aurelio, Carmen Amaya, and others will make your mouth water. As if that were not enough, underground gents such as Sarita Heredia and Pericón de Cádiz coexist side by side with these great historical names. Bearing in mind that they can never be all they are in one single disc; the selection of voices is exquisite: from the acute of Manuel Vallejo to the wounding of Angelillo or Manolo Caracol, and everything that fits in between. This compilation shows some of the earliest examples of Flamenco music recorded, brutal and exciting music that easily combines the known and the darkest, more accessible and attractive for the audience that is approaching for the first time. Also includes tracks by Juan Varea, Antonio Rengel, Estrellita Castro and Niña De La Puebla. Presented on audiophile transparent clear vinyl with a CD included; fully remastered with detailed liner notes.

VA Incantations For Tape LP+CD
Sound Miracle Recordings presents precocious noise and early electronica part one. A compilation delving into the fascinating world of primal electronica, noise, sound design, industrial, avant-garde and tape-music. This set hopes to be the gateway to a completely new revolutionary sound experience. These are relics with much to say to the contemporary listener as they sound impossibly way ahead of their and our time(s). Here are demonstrations of techniques and sound systems that shaped modern music as we know it today. These are the first examples ever to loop a track, play it in reverse, or use a host of other effects which are all so common tools for musicians of today. Some examples here can be considered as of some of the earliest forms of New Age too, where artists used raw techniques to make some of the first intentionally ambient and hypnotic music. The selections start in the 1920s and end in the early 1960s. The songs are sequenced to give a coherent and surprisingly easy way to enjoy and appreciate a music field that can otherwise be baffling. Presented on audiophile transparent clear vinyl with a CD included. Fully remastered tracks by Tom Dissevelt & Kid Baltan, Remi Gassmann, Max Mathews, The Blue Men, Attilio Mineo, Bülent Arel, Daphne Oram, Alwin Nikolais, György Litegi, Ussachevsky/Luening, Henk Badings, Phil Young and Gottfriend Koening.

VA Hells Bells: Swing Candies For Doomsday 10"
It was neither a "stormy Monday", nor "a similar bad Tuesday", when the Retrograph got a call for doing the artwork of old pal Little Victor's "Lo-Fi Recordings" vinyl platter for Stag-O-Lee. They were in touch and shortly after, the idea of compiling weird stuff for "the 5th season" was born. It would have been way too easy concentrating on titles with "Ghost", "Spook", or "Devil" simply in the titles of often very boring and only fast or unbelievable lame tracks, so they went ahead doing something more subtle and special, spanning the decades from the 1920s through the 1940s in a very wild manner. At last, they kicked the term "Halloween" as it should be played the whole year through and every track is solid sending stuff for sophisticated Lindy Hop, Shag, or Balboa-dancing. It was so much fun digging through tons of old 78 rpm records, recording lots of material, and listening to them over and over again, kicking out, taking in, discovering stuff that was unheard over the last years and seemed sleeping til dawn. Then came the artwork and Stag-O-Lee wanted to do something special here as well, so they have taken an old Vocalion shellac sleeve from the '30s as a base for their own needs, trying to preserve the feel of old records from about eight decades ago. It is a nice anachronism in a time, where it is possible, to simply press a button on the telephone to make you hear whatever you like, almost everything and everywhere. Hopefully, there will be still lots of black holes in the world wide web in future. Features Fats Waller & His Rhythm, Count Basie Orchestra with Jimmy Rushing, The State Street Ramblers, Artie Shaw Orchestra with Helen Forrest, Sidney Bechet with Noble Sissle's Swingsters, Teddy Foster And His Kings Of Swing, Benny Goodman with Jack Teagarden, Woody Herman Orchestra, Llyod Smith's Gut-Bucketeers with Jabbo Smith, and Georgia Gibbs.

GINZBURG, JAMES Six Correlations LP
Subtext releases James Ginzburg's Six Correlations, originally composed for a commissioned performance in Berlin and recorded in early 2018 over three days. James Ginzburg is one half of Emptyset and founder of Subtext Recordings, as well as co-curator of the Arc Light Editions imprint with Jennifer Allan. Six Correlations explores the intersections between traditional music from various cultures, with a particular focus on Gaelic folk music native to the remote island regions of Scotland, where half of Ginzburg's family originates from. It incorporates influences of Iranian traditional music, Indian classical and generative composition techniques. Six Correlations considers the relationship between the organic and the digital world as a meditation on whether modernity implicitly represents a long slow goodbye to nature: a long slow goodbye to everything that is not integrated into the networked world. The response to the disappearance of both nature and non-digital culture is presented here as an aspiration to imagine and communicate a harmonious relationship between the organic and the technological. Produced using a hand drum, piano, voice, shruti box and Roland SH-101, Six Correlations brings together many of the influences from the Subtext artists with whom Ginzburg has worked with over the last years, such as Turkish artist and percussionist Cevdet Erek and Swedish composer Ellen Arkbro, as well as connecting with his instrumental explorations with Paul Purgas as Emptyset, and recent releases on Arc Light Editions such as Salm (ALE 007LP, 2018) an LP of Gaelic Psalm singing from the Outer Hebrides of Scotland.

SKIN TOWN Country LP
Skin Town's unexpected return with their new album Country finds the duo upping the already high bar set on their striking dark pop gem debut The Room (TNP 012CD/LP, 2013) with a dauntless artistic statement that trades clever posturing for vulnerability. Yielding their prowess with more restraint, Skin Town's Country hits harder and cuts deeper - doubling down on their narcotic cocktail of strong R&B hooks, spacious bewitching productions, and marked sense of melody that puts vocalist Grace Hall and multi-instrumentalist Nick Turco in a class of their own. Many saw that potential on their debut with support from Dazed, Interview, The FADER, KCRW, as well as artists like Tinashe shouting out Skin Town. Lamenting on the duo's unmistakable chemistry, Pitchfork says, "Turco's synthscapes are huge and scene-stealing, while Hall's husky voice strikes a glorious medium between Abel Tesfaye and Sade." Their latest is even more potent, a particular strain of sad dance music that feels timeless and raw. Country refines Skin Town's minimal framework of tethering hip-hop/R&B rhythms to Hall's smoky, precise phrasing exploring richer atmospheres and darker concerns. Written and recorded over three years, the album touches upon depression, loss, hedonism, poverty, rebellion, sex work, empowerment, and love's contradictions. The album's completion was sidetracked many times with Hall suffering a string of life-threatening mysterious immune system ailments, as a result there is a lot of pain and joy in this record, made with literal blood and tears. The opener "Bad" signals at this departure from their upbeat predecessor stripping away the beats, relying on the interplay between Turco's ringing chords, the enveloping synthwork and Hall's melancholic, rhythmic intonations. "Mute" brings back the drums, couched in a slinking hip-hop beat and a creeping synth lead. Throughout the record, Turco's productions glean from an eclectic, disparate mix: melodic Amiga tracker music, metro boomin', new age, while Hall seems ever-more comfortable exploring syncopation and half-rapped/half-sung excursions. This is inventive, uncanny pop music where Enya, Offset, Zola Jesus, and Future inhabit the same space.

PERRY, LEE 'SCRATCH' The Black Album CD
At 83 years of age, Lee Scratch Perry presents to the world his next full-length solo album, The Black Album, with dub versions, continuing his inimitable roots reggae legacy. Lee's brief for the album, was to blend the vintage and the obscure, during the sessions Lee referred to the sound and "black" and wanted space, light and darkness in the songs and their respective dub versions. The result sees Lee having mixed up an analog concoction of ultra-rare effects, sonic wizardry and deep heavy roots rhythms. Over 2017 and 2018, Lee Scratch Perry reunited with producer and mixer Daniel Boyle to start work on their second solo album project for Lee. Picking up where their last efforts Back On The Controls (2014) left off. Lee wanted to continue the raw analog sound they had cultivated together over multiple past releases, and take it to the next level with new effects devices to create another sonic signature. They entered the studio in 2017, to begin to put together ideas for the tracks, which were then taken to RAK studios in London with their ever-changing Rolling Lion All Stars session band; to lay down the rhythm versions. Using strictly vintage analog equipment, they employed Neuman valve and RCA Ribbon microphones, and RAK's early model vintage API desk to record, the "sound" for the album was sculpted in these sessions. Vintage, but punchy, which was then blended with Lee's choice of super rare and custom analogue effects. Ursa Major Space Station and Stargate delays and reverbs, old choruses, plate and spring reverbs, and tape delays were used to create a tight vintage feel but retaining the rawness of the "Low Fi" roots sound Lee was aiming for. With the music coming together, the vocal sessions were held in Abbey Road Studio 3, again using vintage RCA ribbon mics, overdriving their EMI TG console and Fairchild compressors to create a pleasantly distorted lo-fi vocal sound. Lee and Daniel then returned to Daniels Rolling Lion Studio, to mix and dub the album, live, on the mixing console.

PEREGOYO Y SU COMBO VACANA Mi Buenaventura LP
"While all four Peregoyo y su Combo Vacaná albums are classics deserving their rightful place in the national musical heritage of Colombia, Mi Buenaventura (recorded circa 1967) is perhaps their most iconic. Their second release for Discos Fuentes is rich with diverse sounds and festive rhythms, from the exotic trance-inducing coastal Afro-Colombian polyrhythmic syncopations of the currulao, abozao chocoano, porro, cumbia and aguabajo to the more well-known genres of Cuban and Puerto Rican origin like descarga, bomba, guaracha and son montuno -- Peregoyo and his crew were equally adept at playing all these and more. The nine-member combo was formed by composer and tenor saxophonist Enrique "Peregoyo" Urbano Tenorio in the Pacific coastal city of Buenaventura and is said to be the first to make their local "Pacífico" music traditions an integral part of a commercially presented repertoire. His stated mission was to modernize the folkloric genres of his region as well as play the popular tropical dance music from Cuba, New York and Puerto Rico. First recording as Peregoyo y su Combo Vacaná for Discos Fuentes in 1966, the band broke up over a financial dispute a few years later at the Feria de Cali while performing with Ricardo Ray. They had a brief "comeback" decades later, and are acknowledged today as a seminal influence on Colombian music. The combo's output stands the test of time, and this reissue presents one of their finest efforts in its original form." --Pablo Yglesias aka DJ Bongohead

DIZZY BRAINS, THE Tany Razana LP
LP version. The Dizzy Brains, these four raging boys with their protest garage rock, left their homeland, Madagascar, to claim their anger against corruption, inaction of politicians and lack of freedom of expression. Raw vintage rock is their weapon to denounce and be heard. Lovers of The Sonics, The Stooges, and MC5, the two brothers, Eddy on vocals and Mahefa on bass, founders of the band, were raised on the rock of the 1960s and 70's by their father. Their songs speak about their country with love and passion but also about the corruption that ravages the future of the people. The first concert of The Dizzy Brains outside Tananarive was held at the Transmusicales of Rennes in 2015, of which they were the revelation. They performed the following year at the Printemps de Bourges, MaMa Festival, Fiesta des Suds or Solidays, and they also stepped onto the stages of the Festival d'Ete de Quebec and Esperanzah in Belgium. Their audience grew in the spring of 2018 during their first tour of Germany and the Netherlands. Between concerts, planes and the road, The Dizzy Brains produced Tany Razana, their second album in the south of France. These thirteen new songs are more mature than those of their first album Out Of The Cage(XRP 1602CD/LP, 2017). Entitled Tany Razana ("burnt earth" in Malagasy), this new album also gives pride of place to the guitar riffs of Poun and the powerful drumming of Mirana.

NEGRO, JOEY Remixed With Love by Joey Negro Vol. Three, Part One 2LP
Part one of three double-LP versions; gatefold sleeve. Classic disco reworked from original multi-track tapes, Joey Negro's Remixed With Love Volume 3 is the latest edition of what has become the industry-leading disco remix series. No one knows this era of music better than Dave Lee, who under his Joey Negro alias once again turns his impeccable hand to some of the best-loved records ever committed to wax. Lee says, "I can clearly remember in the 1980s having fantasies about being a remixer and dreaming of tweaking my favorite songs and re-releasing them. I really never thought it would happen. The days when I receive the parts for some of these classic recordings are literally a dream come true." Remixed With Love Volume 3 has been a real labor of love, and a release several years in the making. With original parts for some of these classics hard to find, and with major labels rightly protective of songs created by legendary artists, it is a testament to both the perseverance of Lee and the esteem in which he is held as a remixer that the project was ever completed. Lee has put his own inimitable spin on more than a dozen seminal records, with The Fatback Band, Patti LaBelle, Evelyn "Champagne" King, Odyssey and many more vying for attention across a stunning three-part gatefold double vinyl/double CD release. As one would expect from an artist of Lee's caliber, he's taken the task extremely seriously. There are few producers with either the confident or ability to take on records of this heritage, but Lee has once again proved that when it comes to sensitive re-workings of disco staples, he's in a league of his own. All the remixes here are new and exclusive to the compilation, making Remixed With Love Volume 3 an essential purchase for any disco devotee. Also features: Ashford & Simpson, Gladys Knight & The Pips, Earth, Wind & Fire, Eddie Kendricks, Brenda Russell, L.T.D., Michael Wycoff, Gwen McCrae, Samuel Jonathan Johnson, Mass Production, Lonnie Liston Smith, Mtume, Glenn Jones, Slave, Venus Dodson, Booker T., Patrice Rushen, and Deniece Williams.
