MAYFIELD, CURTIS Curtis/Live! 2LP
"Recorded in early 1971, Curtis/Live! finds Curtis Mayfield in top form at the intimate Greenwich Village club The Bitter End. With veterans from Chicago's soul and jazz scene, Mayfield runs through a superb setlist of Impressions classics ('Gypsy Woman,' 'People Get Ready'), gems from his first solo LP ('We The People Who Are Darker Than Blue,' 'The Makings of You') and fierce originals that would make their recording debut here ('I Plan To Stay A Believer,' 'Stare And Stare,' and 'Stone Junkie'). As author Lloyd Sachs writes in the liner notes for this vinyl reissue, 'All of the songs are lovingly reworked -- in some cases stretched out and in others, brightened with humor. The band redefines groove via the West African polyrhythms of conga and bongo great Henry Gibson and the intertwined guitars of Mayfield -- whose dulcet, vocal-like tone was a revolution in and of itself -- and Craig McMullen. The group creates excitement through tension and release, through building up and letting go.' Curtis/Live! was originally issued on Mayfield's own Curtom label just before his second studio album, 1971's Roots, and his influential SuperFly soundtrack. While the singer would continue to establish himself as one of the key voices of his generation, the powerful anthems and in-the-pocket perfection on this double-LP live set demonstrate how brilliant Curtis truly was -- a master class in restraint and fearless expression."

VA Unusual Sounds CD
"In the heyday of low-budget television and scrappy genre filmmaking, producers who needed a soundtrack for their commercial entertainments could reach for a selection of library music: LPs of stock recordings whose contents fit any mood required. Though at the time, the use of such records was mostly a cost-cutting maneuver for productions that couldn't afford to hire their own composer, the industry soon took on its own life: library publishers became major financial successes, and much of the work they released was truly extraordinary. In fact, many of these anonymous or pseudonymous scores-on-demand were crafted by the some of the greatest musical minds of the late 20th century, expert musicians and innovative composers who revelled in the freedoms offered, paradoxically, by this most corporate of fields. Unusual Sounds is a deep dive into a musical universe that has, until now, been accessible only to producers and record collectors; a celebration of this strange industry and an examination of its unique place at the nexus of art and commerce. This compilation includes compositions by Brainticket founder Joel Vandroogenbroeck, KPM Allstars John Cameron and Keith Mansfield, Montenegrin-born composer Janko Nilovi?, and the Italian film composer Stefano Torossi amongst others. GAZELLE TWIN Pastoral CD
The new album by Gazelle Twin exhumes England's rotten past and shines a torch over its ever-darkening present. Told through a troupe of multi-gender voices, in vernaculars old and new; from the shrill echo of folksong to tabloid-tinged jaunts, the artist presents the notion that "there is horror in every idyll, and danger lurking beyond the 'quaint'." Four years in the making, this is her first major release since her widely acclaimed LP Unflesh (2014) and Kingdom Come (2017). As its sole creator, Gazelle Twin 'The Composer, Musician and Producer' has crafted an album overflowing with a frenzy of traditional and contemporary musical tropes; from early music instrumentation -- the harpsichord and the humble recorder, fed through myriad electronics -- to the compelling, ritualistic application of found sample-looping. Beyond Elizabeth Bernholz's signature choral-infusions, here reverberating like a warped Sunday Service, there are even shades of '90s house and the once-thriving rural rave scene, albeit recalled as a watery, second-hand memory. Set against a verdant backdrop of hedgerows and steeples, Gazelle Twin constructs an eccentric and commanding visual embodiment of all-of-the-above -- a costume fit for a court Jester of the 21st Century. The colours of Neo-Nationalism. Coke cans, and danger. "It" (not "she") hints at folkloric traditions with a footy mascot twist. The "Ye Olde" and "The Everyman" of the English cliché. Brandishing a sneer and a hobby horse. A riddle and a recorder.

WARE TRIO, DAVID S. The Balance (Vision Festival XV +) CD
"The Balance is the fourth edition in the DSW-ARC Series; it presents an outstanding and incendiary David S. Ware concert, in trio with William Parker and Warren Smith. A tenor sax / bass / drums excursion of full intensity from the first note, this suite of spontaneous form was created at NYC's Vision Festival in 2010. Ware had been a perennial at this vital annual gathering since its beginning; this was his first time back since his revered Quartet bid farewell there in 2006, and it was a wholly exhilarating return. This DSW Trio convened only three times over their 10 month existence: the Dec. 2009 studio session for Onecept, this June concert, and the Oct. 2010 album release celebration at the Blue Note in NYC [documented on Live In New York, 2010]. Also included here are four exceptional out-takes from the Onecept session -- all of which had been completed and considered for inclusion at that time. This new release, together with the aforementioned, present the total work which this group created. Each of their three communions has its own flavor: Onecept deals exquisitely with space and purposefully featured David on three different horns (tenor, stritch, saxello), with Warren Smith on tympanis/percussion in addition to drum set. The night at the Blue Note features the most extensive documentation of Ware on alto sax in existence (a straight version; the stritch), with the Mid & Far-Eastern tones he brought forth on the instrument blossoming beautifully over the course of two sets in an intimate setting. This festival stage concert is premier 21st Century free jazz rendered with the virtuosity and lucidity that only Ware (with his esteemed peers) could provide. A profound and utterly complete treat. Packaged in a limited edition deluxe 6-panel digipak, with liner notes by Ware's long-time producer, photographs from the concert, and the vivid witness painting on the cover, which was made during this performance."

PARKER, WILLIAM Flower In a Stained-Glass Window & The Blinking of The Ear 2CD
"This special edition release is comprised of two brand new full-length albums, distinct in personnel & approach, yet complementary in ethos. William Parker is (and has been) on a profound and voluminous creative flow. Both of these albums were made in Summer 2018; they follow up and extend on his June 2018 release, the exemplary 3CD box set Voices Fall From the Sky. Flower in a Stained-Glass Window fully features vocalist Leena Conquest, a tremendous interpreter of Parker's work in song. She can be heard to deep affect in his Raining On The Moon and Inside Songs of Curtis Mayfield projects. This is her first work together with Parker since 2012, and it is a most potent return to this creative orbit. She sings and speaks atop of and within a fresh ensemble featuring Parker's bass together with long-time compatriots trombonist Steve Swell & saxophonist Dave Sewelson, South African drummer Kesivan Naidoo (in his first work with Parker), Parker's son Isaiah on piano, as well as younger saxophonic talents Abraham Mennen and Nick Lyons. This work is dedicated to the inspiration of Martin Luther King, and the lyrical content pulls no punches delivering the truth as Parker sees it. The message is: social and political justice and equality for all human beings. Flower in a Stained-Glass Window was slated for release on its own, and then William Parker had a summer residency at The Stone / New School in New York in which The Blinking of The Ear was presented in wholly extended form by an ensemble featuring Daniel Carter (witness the recently released Seraphic Light), Steve Swell, Eri Yamamoto on piano, William Parker and young Leonid Galaganov on drums, with mezzo soprano AnnMarie Sandy. This composition first appeared on the Voices Fall From The Sky box set in a voice/piano/drums reading. Here, as Parker writes in the liner notes: 'The dream was to combine written music with improvised music; slowly and seamlessly folding them together as one. This sextet live version wholly realized that dream; it was an extraordinary event in music called universal tonality.' After hearing the recording, it was forthwith decided to include this and make it a true double-album event! Astonishing work, all of this. Packaged in a limited edition deluxe 8-panel digipak, with liner notes by William Parker."

GRAVES, MILFORD Babi 2CD
Corbett Vs. Dempsey presents a reissue of Milford Graves's Bäbi, originally issued in 1977 on Graves's own IPS label. This is the first reissue of one of the most legendary albums in the history of free music. Recorded live in concert in 1976, when Graves' trio with saxophonists Arthur Doyle and Hugh Glover was at the height of its powers, Bäbi is a testament to the absolutely unique approach the drummer had established for himself. He had reconfigured the drum kit, removing the second heads on all the drums and replacing the snare with two toms, which allowed him a much more nuanced sense of indirectness in his multi-directional adventures in time. The track "Ba" remains one of the most astonishing feats of percussion alchemy ever waxed, as funky as ten slap bassists and as free as an exploding grenade. Doyle and Glover are incendiary, too, inspired by Graves to new and shocking heights of achievement, their hoarse cries and whistling split-tones carried to thrilling plateaus on the energy of Graves' hands and feet. The original tapes for the session have been lost, so the reissue was lovingly remastered from virgin vinyl, itself now worth a mint. In 2017, Graves discovered a previously unknown tape in his archives featuring the same trio at its inception, in home recordings made seven years earlier, in 1969. Graves pummels a huge gong while Glover plays an instrument that, after sounding like none ever known, turns out to be bass clarinet. Extreme music recorded up close and very hot, it is among the most searing sessions never heard, until now. Rounding out the two-CD package are three previously unpublished photos by Gérard Rouy, and the original LP cover design by Graves himself.

MCPHEE/HAMID DRAKE, JOE Keep Going CD
It's easy to be cynical these days, maybe difficult to imagine that music can change the world, but not for Joe McPhee and Hamid Drake. With Keep Going, they will make the planet a better place for humanity, a place to be humane, to preserve humankind. At 78 years old, Poughkeepsie multi-instrumentalist McPhee is a national treasure, and he's making more music than ever before, pushing himself to tour incessantly, issuing astonishing new records at a fierce rate. But this release, with legendary Chicago percussionist Drake, is something extremely special in the midst of many special records. The duo first recorded together in 1999, having only played together a limited number of times; the resulting music was issued as Emancipation Proclamation on the OkkaDisk label. When the opportunity arose to hit the studio for a second time, McPhee and Drake had two more decades of extensive work together under their belts, as members of the Peter Brötzmann Chicago Tentet and in many other contexts. But the session somehow consolidated their shared energy in an unexpected way; the drummer's incredible warmth and sense of buoyancy, the saxophonist and trumpeter's preternatural musicality and quest for social justice. The recording started with McPhee reciting words by Harriett Tubman, resulting in the title track; Drake's support was an achingly slow Max Roach-like beat. From this inspired, inspiring starting point, the twosome frolicked through a rich program, McPhee donning tenor and alto saxes, and pocket trumpet, Drake turning momentarily to the frame drum. Each musician contributes an introspective solo track. McPhee at one point plays trumpet into an open gong, which gives him otherworldly overtones, a sort of acoustic version of electric Miles. Drake makes too few records, so anything of his is mandatory; McPhee's been on a roll lately, releasing lots of music, but Keep Going is one not to be missed.

MCPHEE, JOE Nation Time CD
Corbett Vs. Dempsey presents a reissue of Joe McPhee's Nation Time, originally issued in 1971. It's been nearly five decades since McPhee assembled a group of musicians to perform the weekend concerts that would become Nation Time, his second LP. It was December 1970; thirty-one-year-old McPhee was inspired by Amiri Baraka's poem It's Nation Time, and the students at Vassar College didn't know what hit them. "What time is it?", shouted McPhee. "Come on, you can do better than that. What time is it?!!" The music on Nation Time came out of a fertile, but little-known creative jazz scene in Poughkeepsie, New York, McPhee's home base. Two bands were deployed, one with a funky free foundation featuring guitar and organ, the other consisting of a more standard jazz formation, with two drummers and the brilliant Mike Kull at the piano. Across the concert and the next afternoon's audience-less recording session, the band was ignited by McPhee's passion and his gorgeous post-Coltrane/post-Pharoah tenor. On "Shakey Jake," they hit a James Brown groove filtered through Archie Shepp, while the sidelong title track is as searching and poignant today as it was during its heyday. Originally released in 1971 on CjR, an imprint started expressly to document McPhee's work, Nation Time has a sense of urgency and inspiration. Additional material from those December days would later appear on Black Magic Man (1975), Hat Hut's first release. In fact, the first four records on the seminal Swiss label all featured McPhee. Nation Time was largely unknown a quarter century or so later, when it was first issued on CD through the Unheard Music Series. On Corbett vs. Dempsey, the album was reissued along with all known tapes leading up to and around it as a CD box set (CVSD 011CD, 2017), but the standalone album has remained incredibly rare. In preparing to reissue the CD on its own, a new, previously unknown tape was discovered with three tracks recorded at the original concert in 1970. These include an intense version of Coltrane's "Naima"; all of them feature pianist Kull, and none have been issued before this. Personnel: Joe Mcphee - Tenor/soprano saxophones, trumpet; Mike Kull - piano, electric piano; Tyrone Crabb -, bass, electric bass, trumpet; Bruce Thompson - drums, percussion; Ernest Bostic - drums, percussion; Otis Greene - alto saxophone; Herbie Lehman - organ; Dave Jones - electric guitar.

MCPHEE/MATS GUSTAFSSON, JOE Brace For Impact CD
Some recordings, the world is just not ready for them when they're made. In 2008, Swedish born, Austrian resident saxophonist Mats Gustafsson and Poughkeepsie, New York multi-instrumentalist Joe McPhee made a suite of studio recordings, Brace For Impact that they loved so much they immediately culled, mixed, and mastered them. A decade later, when the original label for which they were planned had not yet issued them, Gustafsson and McPhee offered them to Corbett Vs. Dempsey, and when the label couldn't believe the music. As searching and searing as anything either of them has made, the duets lived up to their explosive title. Gustafsson is known for his energy, and it's here in droves, but there are other nuances brought out by McPhee, a supple sense of melodicism (hey now, Gustafsson is a Swede, so by birthright he's melodic) and the love of experimental sound-making that McPhee displayed on his sound-on-sound recordings in the late 1960s. Although the two wind-players have worked together very extensively in Peter Brötzmann's large groups, with McPhee as a guest in Gustafsson's band The Thing, and in all manner of large and small group improvisations, they have never issued a record of duets before. This duo debut, now a decade in the can, is insanely powerful. Prepare yourself for the impact. Cover image by Charline von Heyl, interior photo of McPhee and Gustafsson bracing themselves back in 2002 by John Corbett. The package is completed by a haunting cover image by artist Cauleen Smith.

MENGELBERG/PETER BROTZMANN/EVAN PARKER/PETER BENNINK/PAUL RUTHERFORD/DEREK BAILEY/HAN BENNINK, MISHA Groupcomposing CD
Corbett vs. Dempsey presents a reissue of Misha Mengelberg's Groupcomposing, recorded in 1970 and originally released in 1978. Comprised of a one-time international free music supergroup, and originally released as the sixth production on pianist Mengelberg and drummer Han Bennink's ICP label, Groupcomposing has been largely absent from the history books. This is the case because the record has been so unavailable, certainly not as a comment on the magnitude and magnificence of the music. With its Bennink cover (take that Andy Warhol!) and its two side-long tracks, it is an improvised music aficionado's treasure. Mengelberg and Bennink are joined by Bennink's brother, Peter Bennink, on alto saxophone and bagpipes(!), with an incredible reed section of Evan Parker and Peter Brötzmann, Paul Rutherford on trombone, and Derek Bailey on guitar. Moving from peaks of intensity to droning deescalation, totally improvised live in concert in 1970, Groupcomposing should be heard in the company of related records like Brötzmann's Machine Gun (CF 020LP, 2018) and Nipples (CF 013LP, 2016), early London Jazz Composer's Orchestra and Globe Unity Orchestra, and Manfred Schoof's European Echoes (CF 008LP, 2013. The music is reissued here for the first time as a stand-alone CD, with original album art and an interior salon of never-published period photographs by Gérard Rouy. The first in an ongoing series of ICP reissues on Corbett vs. Dempsey, Groupcomposing restores a classic LP to its rightful place in the canon.

I-LP-ON Aanet LP
Ilpo Väisänen returns to Editions Mego under the guise of I-LP-ON with, ÄÄNET, an immense tribute to the outfit he played in alongside his friend and former creative partner Mika Vainio. ÄÄNET takes inspiration from the life of Pan Sonic, the outfit they inhabited for over two decades. Recorded in Kuopio, Barcelona and Karttula, ÄÄNET is made up of a series of miniatures that harness the many shadows this legendary act absorbed: industrial, ambient, dub and club all figure into this edgy slow burning menace of a release. Featuring recordings made on the 2000 Pan Sonic world tour, Väisänen has crafted a unique homage to the outfit which redefined experimental electronic music by embracing pulsing club aesthetics coupled with more abstract avant-garde tendencies. The seismic fingerprint left by Pan Sonic avoids dating and genre identification finding a new definition here both as a nod to a notorious past whilst laying the groundwork for reigniting something utterly contemporary. ÄÄNET is an essential release of Väisänen's as it allows further expansion and broadening of the paths carved out from this resolutely unique form of scratchy and sublime electronic music. All music and sounds by Ilpo Väisänen. Recorded at Kuopio, Barcelona, and Karttula. Contains (field) recordings from 2000 Pan Sonic world tour. Mixed at Juniper & Stone, Karttula, Finland. Record is influenced by the life of Pan Sonic. Recitation on B9 by Ilpo. Conversator on B3 Dave Burton. Mika photo by John Duncan. Mastered at Dubplates & Mastering. ABRAMS, JOSHUA Excavations 1 LP
Repressed. "The Chicago-based string genius Joshua Abrams first talked to us about the idea of this album a while back. It took a couple of years to get together, but in a way, it's cool that it's being released in 2018 -- the 50th anniversary of the recording of the first free bass solo LP, Barre Phillips' Journal Violone. Issued by Opus One in the U.S., Music Man in the UK (as Unaccompanied Barre), and Futura in France (as Basse Barre), Phillips' groundbreaking album was a gorgeous and gritty exploration of textures that are usually bound deep inside the creative flow of unit improvisation. Hearing these sonorities explored, at length, without extraneous gabble was revelatory, but not easy to replicate. I could only think of a dozen other LPs of the stuff that have been done in the intervening years (CDs don't count)*. But Abrams is undaunted by such shit. Anyone who has seen him play or listened to him on record knows he has an aggressively wide palette and a fearless drive to explore new regions of sound. The tones on Excavations 1 have a much gnarlier feel than many of the tones Joshua explores inside group dynamics. Almost more like some of the bassists associated with avant garde composition (Bertram Turetzky, Fernando Grillo, etc.), Abrams' work here is about pushing against accepted precepts of melody and rhythm, freeing the bass from its accepted role, and allowing it to scream for real." --Byron Coley, 2018 Edition of 500.* 1974, Alan Silva - Inner Song (Center of the World); 1974, Harry Miller - Children at Play (Ogun); 1975, Kent Carter - Beauvais Cathedral (Emanem); 1976, Henri Texier - Amir (Eurodisc); 1976 - Fernando Grillo - Fluvine (Cramps); 1977, Henry Texier - Varech (Eurodisc); 1978, Dave Holland - Emerald Tears (ECM); 1978, Brother Malachi Favors - Magoustos Natural & Spiritual (AECO); 1980, Roberto Miguel Miranda - The Creator's Musician (Nimbus West); 1985, Joëlle Léandre - ?Sincerely (Plainisphare); 1986, Miroslav Vitous - Emergence (ECM); 1988, Klaus Koch - Basse Partout (Creative Works).

BIG BLOOD Operate Spaceship Earth Properly LP
2018 repress, on splatter vinyl. "Our last Big Blood release was the idiosyncratic Ant Farm, Colleen and Caleb's collaboration with the late composer Elliott Schwartz, which presented music designed for a museum installation. With Operate Spaceship Earth Properly, Big Blood return to the vast universe of strangeness they explore inside their own skin. Now fully incorporating the vocals and guitar of their daughter Quinnisa (previously a 'secret weapon' unveiled mostly at live shows, as the Dictators once did with Handsome Dick Manitoba), Big Blood sound nutsier and wilder than ever. Spaceship Earth is a massively psychedelic investigation of science fiction, science fact and the mythic spot where they reconcile. Specifically referring to the work of writers such as Octavia Butler, Ursula K. Le Guin and Buckminster Fuller, the music mixes the thunder of riff-thuggery with vocals beamed in from planet Comus and beat-slaps equally indebted to the Purple Revolutionary and the Neue Deutsche Welle. The combination is head-spinning and gloriously original but will be immediately identifiable as Big Blood by anyone who knows the band's music. I mean, it's so freaking strange and so freaking Maine, who else could it be?" --Byron Coley, 2018

FOUDRE! Kami ? LP
Kami ? is the fourth opus of Foudre!, a telluric drone quartet composed of Frédéric D. Oberland (Oiseaux-Tempête, Le Réveil des Tropiques, The Rustle Of The Stars, FareWell Poetry), Romain Barbot (Saåad), Grégory Buffier (Saåad, Autrenoir), and Paul Régimbeau (Mondkopf, Autrenoir, Extreme Precautions) who meet punctually for sessions of ritual improvisation where they invoke noise and drone and the deities of chaos. Improvised and recorded live at Le Rex de Toulouse supporting the tenth anniversary of French doom metal band Monarch!, Kami ? extends the cosmogony and the sound of the band by taking excursions into the invisible and ambiguous side of nature. In this orgiastic and surprising mix of sonic textures and rhythms, one may hear strange phenomena, summoning of animistic spirits, shamanic calls, siren yellings and growls. The original chemigram artwork was created by French artist Fanny Béguély by painting with chemicals on light-sensitive paper. Following the sold-out Earth soundtrack (GZH 071LP, 2015), Kami ? delivers an immersive soundscape for abstract clubbers, where Kosmiche electronic, power ambient and industrial punk music are freely invited to commune. This pagan ceremonial is an ode to the ever-changing vortex of life, a sonic dream machine for the occurring now.

FREEKS, THE Crazy World CD
Los Angeles band The Freeks know that as the Earth revolves the Sun and the universe infinitely expands, it must be shared with as many different kinds of life as there are stars, a bold statement coming from a bunch of Freeks. This is not a new concept, however; it is an ever-recurring one dating back to Ezekiel's biblical account, and even further back with evidence from ancient Egypt and Mayan times. After 4000 years, the theory continues strong as we enter 2018. The Freeks also enter 2018 with the completion of Crazy World, their fourth album and second for Italian-based Heavy Psych Sounds Records. Crazy World is a studio record with eight songs that take you on a psychedelic journey from hidden moonlit distilleries all the way up to the mother ship and back down to Mother Earth. It could have happened in 2700 B.C. and it's definitely happening again now as The Freeks continue to ferment their ethanol-infused fuzz rock, their songwriting reflecting heavier content and extra-added amounts of psychoactive chemicals from the minds of their listeners. Ruben Romano (founding member of Fu Manchu and Nebula) returns at the helm supported by Bob Lee on drums (Claw Hammer, Mike Watt), Esteban Chavez on keys, Jonathan Hall on guitar (Backbiter) and introducing the latest Freek on bass, Ray Piller (Biblical Proof of U.F.O.'s). Crazy World also features some amazing musical guests that add to the insanity and continue The Freeks' 'All Are Welcome' legacy. It has ripping guitar leads by Ray Hanson (Thee Hypnotics), added keys and synth from returning Freek alumni Glenn Slater (The Walkabouts and Wellwater Conspiracy), added bass lines by Crazy World producer Rainer Fraenkel (The Miracle Mongers) plus backing vocals by singer/model Sara Loera.

DR. JOHN Gris Gris (Color Vinyl) LP
"1968 debut album from the king of the psychedelic bayou -- the hypnotic, mystical and powerful sound of the swamp coming to life. As he became Dr. John (real name Mac Rebennack), it was his LA session work with musicians like Sonny & Cher, Canned Heat, and Zappa that allowed him to start conjuring up his visions of guitar psych-pop to walk alongside his authentic New Orleans upbringing. While Gris Gris contains moments that make it a type stamped symbol of its era, it might have well been made in outer space. Recorded in its own psychic and stylistic vacuum, the album borrows as heavily from the New Orleans' musical culture in which he grew up as it does the looming continuous pulse of war, heavy drugs, and the end of the free love/hippie movement. The album was taken under the wing of a small percentage of the 'underground' upon its release in 1968 and did not find a true following for years. Limited color vinyl, first reissue for original mono mix."

VA Lumière Noire Presents From Above Vol. I 2LP
In just a year of existence, Chloé's Lumière Noire has brought emerging artists and promising newcomers together; this first compilation of 13 brand new tracks expands the roster, expanding the label's eclectic vision. When Chloé talks about her label, she puts forward the fundamental values that informed her own musical journey, her own musical taste, and, of course, the predominance of human relationships: "I followed my bliss and only commissioned tracks from artists that I respect and whose music I love. That to me is Lumière Noire's musical palette." With this unmixed compilation, Chloé makes a case for a label aesthetic that is based in open-mindedness. Familiar Lumière Noire artists are represented, as are new faces, producing a kind of group photo presaging what's next for the fledgling label. Lyon's Markus Gibb leads the track listing with a deep chiaroscuro matching the label's ethos, followed by fellow mainstays Il Est Vilaine, with the band's usual electro-pop elegance. Sutja Gutierrez, who released his debut EP, The Legend of Time (LN 015EP, 2017) on Lumière Noire, pursues his electro- Shamanism, while Iñigo Vontier (whose Aluxes (LN 008EP, 2017) came out on the label) brings his C O N T R A project online, a further development in voodoo house. Elsewhere, Suuns lead singer Ben Shemie contributes a synthy, psych-pop debut that is as brilliant as it is surprising. Dutch producer Drvg Cvltvre brings uncompromising dark electro with the hypnotic and claustrophobic "Last Rites". Jonathan Fitoussi's airy, minimalism brings the respite of his Versatile Espaces Timbrés (2018). Benedikt Frey's deep techno track is on par with his Artificial (2017), while Bajram Bili, Théo Muller and Lumi, bring the compilation to a close. These audacious choices are anchored down with the likes of Permanent Vacation pioneer Lauer's hooky, '80s-infused style and Franck Agrario, half of English duo Swayzak's David Brown's project, weaves an ethno mood into "Grace"'s techno. Bringing together different generations, genres, and styles may not necessarily be Chloé's MO. She invokes a more arbitrary, personal logic: "I like to mix of-the-moment tracks and more timeless ones, but the rule is above all 'do I love this or not?'. That was my ethos when I started Lumière Noire". In that way, the label is definitely in keeping with its time.

KHIDJA & BALABAS Khidja Si Balabas LP
Malka Tuti are releasing Khidja Si Balabas, a mega four-tracker by Khidja, in collaboration with their old time friend from back home Mihai Balabas. The four different tracks were written over the past few years, slowly plotted produced and perfected, each in its own twisted direction. There are no dancefloor killers here, but instead four very unique voyages, experimental sonic excursions in time and space. It was the track "Chloe" that caught the attention, back in 2015. It's not a typical Khidja track, but the musicality and the composition in it reminded us of lost Balearic moments. It made for reminiscing on summery Sunday mornings back when life was still a bit more innocent, and naive. Out of that infatuation came the idea of "sitting on it" until the right tracks will be ready, and here they are, more than three years later.

DEMDIKE STARE Passion 2LP
Since the release of their album Wonderland (LOVE 105JC-CD/105LP, 2016), Demdike Stare have been recording material for this new double album Passion; an asymmetric re-imagining of UK club styles taking in frenzied drum trax, shortwave jungle, pinging dancehall and clipped, post-punk riddims. During this time they've been busy curating their DDS label (releases from Shinichi Atobe, Mica Levi, Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe, and Equiknoxx, among others) and have been commissioned by both the Groupe de Recherches Musicales (GRM) and the surviving members of Gruppo di Improvvisazione Nuova Consonanza to mine and rework their archives. Enlisting visual artist Michael England (Autechre, Gescom, Leila), they've created a cinematic accompaniment for their collaborative live shows, resulting in the image which adorns this cover - a hybrid/composite portrait exploring/questioning the current use of software in creating hyper reality and the manipulation of the self. The accompanying film includes documentary footage filmed at a Voguing event in NYC, a Blackpool promenade and a Newark, New Jersey roller rink, the end result smudging the lines between live performance, documentary and sonic cinema. It's an idea that's echoed on Passion, continuing a process Demdike began on their Testpressing series of dismantling lines between analog and digital realms, between urban realism and fantasy, between experimental, pop and soundsystem cultures. An outlandish configuration of avant-garde and ultimately functional club weapons designed and honed for the weightiest bassbins, it's also their most direct and fucked up record to date -- a raucous, joyful 9-track smash that comes off like a night on a glamorous, neon-lit bender. Mastered by Matt Colton. RIYL: Errorsmith, Príncipe, Dem 2, Jon E Cash, Wiley, Joy Division, DJ Scud, Equiknoxx, Anthony 'Shake' Shakir, Bernard Parmegiani. High-gloss varnish sleeve.

MUTANT BEAT DANCE Mutant Beat Dance 2CD
Mutant Beat Dance has returned with their debut self-titled 25-track album. The record image booklet has been in development since 2015 with over 200 minutes running time and is released in various formats. The debut album from renegade trio Mutant Beat Dance -- Melvin Oliphant (Traxx), Beau Wanzer, and Steve Summers -- takes the wild and free sound of Chicago's Music Box era into the 21st century. Over twenty-five tracks the album mines an oft-cited but rarely understood ground at the intersection of post-punk, minimal wave, industrial, disco dub, EBM, and proto-house/early-House. Mutant Beat Dance is an epic journey into a classic American ideology that had its apex in Chicago. This aesthetic has already proven influential on many artists across the globe. Least of which is the Grammy-winning LCD Soundsystem whose members Tyler Pope and Patrick Mahoney back Melvin on vocals here on the Martin Hannett and Howard Devoto inspired "Feed The Enemy". Another LCD member Gavin Rayna Russom also provides vocals on the later-cut "Geometrical Disease" as Black Meteoric Star. Mutant Beat Dance was originally a duo made up of Traxx, and molecular biologist, Chicagoan Beau Wanzer. Traxx and Beau have been working on this concept in various forms throughout the last decade on solo and duo releases. After a rack full of releases, the duo began to refine their concept from 2015 on into its most thoroughly developed state -- the result is this epic 25-track, 200-minute long debut M.B.D album for Rush Hour. Given the scope of the material for the project it became logical and necessary to expand the unit to include its newest member Brooklyn based Steve Summers known for his releases on Clone Jack For Daze, Confused House, and others. Together this hard-working trio has completed an album with an enormous diversity of song styles unlike anything they have ever done before. Unique in its musical range and content from obscure electronics with subliminal messages to funk-laden machine grooves, industrial soundscapes, Detroit dirge, cryptic ankle bitter anthems, and beyond, this is a genre-bending challenging monster of an album that may scare you at first but push forward and deep rewards lie within. Also features Marianna and Naughty Wood.

GEIST, MORITZ SIMON Robotic Electronic Music LP
LP version. Moritz Simon Geist, media artist and robotic musician, publishes his first record, Robotic Electronic Music. It is the world's first techno record played entirely by self-made futuristic robots. All of the sounds on his records are played by robots: small motors that beat on metal, futuristic 3D-printed robo-kalimbas, salvaged parts from old hard drives that click and cut. It took Geist several years to build, tweak, test and play all his DIY robotic instruments. His Sonic Robots push the boundaries of the imaginable, as in 2012 with his well-known oversized 808 robot, an iconic drum machine filled with robotic parts which play the instruments live. Now, Geist goes further to discover the unknown and futuristic world of techno robotics. For this quest, he teamed up with Mouse On Mars and dug into the history of mechanical music and experiments of early electronic music. On Robotic Electronic Music, Geist extends the futuristic approach to music making he introduced in his first EP. The opener "Entropy" appeared on his EP, a bassy club-track, played by robotic kalimbas, a psychedelic pattern of tonal glasses and pneumatic hi-hat patterns. Geist: "When you listen to robots playing, you realize, that they sound precise, but in contrast to digital sounds they transport an immense organic feeling. No beat is like the other, everything is played with actual acoustic physicality and thus actual error. At the same time, the repetitive nature of the robots make them perfect for playing electronic music; it's industrial and organic at the same time." On "The DNA of Drumming", Geist took several tuned drums and let robotic actuators play rhythms, combining everything to a reduced slow stomper that slowly moves in a hypnotic manner. "In G# (Katze läuft über Klavier)" is a direct reference to Terry Riley's "In C"; the song starts with a robot hammering on prepared piano strings, being slowly filled with robotic marimbas, glasses, robotic shakers, Moritz's own inventions, and mechanic relay synthesizer, which plays notes and melodies with mechanic tongues. It's the warmest song on the album and the only one featuring stronger melodic movements. What Geist came up with is a stunning record of what is possible today - to explore the sound of mechanics that keeps on filling our world. Geist creates a smashing soundtrack for both the precise automation and physical fragility that shapes today's society.

MUQATA'A Inkanakuntu LP
Beat master Muqata'a, one of the brains behind the thriving hip hop scene in Ramallah, Palestine, delivers a unique instrumental album, Inkanakuntu. While Discrepant were exploring the world digging for music that exists at the edge of many genres they realized the need to create an(other) adventurous new sublabel. Souk Records aims to bring beats from every corner of the world with the divergent and discrepant taste that has been delivered since 2010. Inkanakuntu is more than an instrumental hip-hop album, with nods to classic hip-hop works and mixed with a downtempo grime feel that captures the urgency and eagerness of UK's dance culture. With these eight instrumentals Muqata'a shows how vast and deep his music knowledge is, with a refined taste and a perfect sense of melody-molding. Sometimes it's real raw, in others we can feel mellowness and jazz feeling or the perfect pop beat. Make no mistake, Muqata'a is a beats craftsman.

AMAN!!! Aman!!! Cassette
Aman!!! is a newly-formed project by Tasos Stamou (Greek bouzouki & Turkish saz) and Thodoris Ziarkas (blues guitar). The duo explores the borders of improvisation in the context of traditional music, especially focused in the musical heritage of Greek rebetiko and other styles of the south-east Mediterranean. The project reflects reflects both musicians's interest about reinterpreting traditional music in a contemporary, non-sterilized form whilst dealing with music tradition in their very own special way; abstract prepared-strings improvisations blend back-and-forth with original old songs of '30s and '40s phonography.

FALL, THE Rough Trade Singles LP
"The Rough Trade Singles collects The Fall's four singles recorded for this influential label in 1980 and 1983 -- How I Wrote 'Elastic Man' / City Hobgoblins, Totally Wired / Putta Block, The Man Whose Head Expanded / Ludd Gang and Kicker Conspiracy -- none of which appeared on any of the band's studio LPs. With 7-inches being the era's vehicle for buzzing communiqués, The Fall would use the format for short-form, standalone works rather than as mere promotional devices for forthcoming albums. 'Totally Wired' is often cited (and rightfully so) as The Fall's most infectious tune -- an amphetamine-fueled anthem with stuttering nods to forebears, yet too incisive to have been made by anyone else. 'How I Wrote 'Elastic Man'' is another mad hoedown, one reimagined for the post-punk age. While the playful rhythm machine on 'The Man Whose Head Expanded' almost suggests danceability, Mark E. Smith's idiosyncratic shriek on 'Kicker Conspiracy' pierces through the twin drumming of Paul Hanley and Karl Burns and the group's unpredictable/unmistakable racket. Together these songs remain some of the absolute best material The Fall would ever release. Superior Viaduct's edition is the first time that The Rough Trade Singles has been available on vinyl domestically. Liner notes by Brian Turner."

KOSUGI, TAKEHISA Catch-Wave LP
"Composer, multi-instrumentalist and mixed-media artist, Takehisa Kosugi has stood on the forefront of the Japanese avant-garde for over six decades. In the 1960s, he was part of Japan's first improvisational music collective, Group Ongaku, and contributed to Fluxus in New York. In 1969, he founded the influential, experimental ensemble The Taj Mahal Travellers, and in 1975 he would release his first solo album, Catch-Wave. 'Mano-Dharma '74' features improvised violin drones and voice with various oscillators, echo delays and layered tape experiments that the artist made in New York in 1967. While Kosugi's continuously changing spectrum of sound shifts gradually (almost imperceptibly), photocell synthesizers create ultra-low frequencies to disturb the crestless sound waves. The brighter the light is, the harsher the noise becomes. Catch-Wave's second sidelong piece, 'Wave Code #E-1,' is a three-part performance for solo vocalist. As Kosugi describes in the liner notes (translated into English for this edition), the concept of onomatopoeia played an essential role in the type of sounds he generates with his voice, manipulated through customized electronic circuits and at times recalling Gregorian chant, throat singing and cosmic soundscapes. This first-time vinyl reissue is recommended for fans of Tony Conrad, Eliane Radigue and Fennesz."

Nu Guinea's World EP starts with the beautifully dislocated and mid-tempo "Bougainvilles Live" on warm analog textures across a live percussion base, while the title track plows a similar furrow to early Metro Area, with synth work over an Afro groove and undeniable jazz-funk flair. "Exotica Dance Club" sounds like Herbie visited the Salsoul studios with his banks of modular gear and jammed out into the small hours; the beatless "Outro" is all synth washes and lavish ear candy. Another superb release on this ever-impressive label.

GRAEF, MAX Lo Siento Mucho Pero No Hablo Tu Idioma 2LP
Four years after his breakthrough, Max Graef returns to Tartelet Records with his second solo album. A dungeon-dub symphony in four parts, Lo Siento Mucho Pero No Hablo Tu Idioma is an album's album. Brimming with new and old guests, interludes and bonus skits, it's a consummate sketchbook of Graef's most unique music to date. "Every bit of music or work represents the mood and skills of a certain period," he says. Where Graef's critically acclaimed debut LP Rivers of the Red Planet (TARTALB 003LP, 2014) began an adventure away from the dance floor, this record wormholes into totally lateral territory. Not interested in repeating old tricks, No Hablo... sees Graef on a playful joyride through a whole new crate of influences. Echoes of Japanese video game music bubble through the Zelda-channeling "Master Quest" and dreamy bonus level "Midi Break 1." "Midi Lisa" and "Intershop" roll out mutant digi-reggae, while "Rush" and "Level Zero" dig deeper into bass and juke. The album also premieres music with Chrissley Benz, a Kazakhstani singer. As Graef explains: "No Hablo is intuitive with, less editing, raw arrangements, and filled with experiments. I worked on it in a very unmusical way." But the record isn't a universe apart from his previous output; throwbacks to the tape-deck world of g-funk and 80's boogie are still present, as well as a few psychedelic jazz cuts. The record also sees the return of Graef's fathe, guitarist, Gerry Franke, plus long-time collaborators Funkycan and Ludwig. A record of 20 tracks, it covers many bases, and somehow it all makes perfect sense and reaffirms Graef's natural-born ear for killer hooks and unique melodies. The album's title, Lo Siento Mucho Pero No Hablo Tu Idioma, is an elegant and simultaneously ironic way of apologizing for not speaking one's language in Spanish. It's a fitting metaphor that speaks to Max's ability to skip effortlessly between musical dialects with style and grace. This album proves it more than ever. Lo Siento Mucho Pero No Hablo Tu Idioma comes with 20 short films and a radio station playing No Hablo... hits non-stop. Tune in to www.no-hablo.com and let the weirdness unfold. Max Graef follows Glenn Astro, Space Ghost and others in Tartelet's 10th year in business, celebrating the label's commitment to work across genres.

ZULI Terminal 2LP
Terminal is the debut album from Ahmed El Ghazoly, aka Zuli, for Lee Gamble's UIQ label. Electronic prism-pusher Zuli explores themes of identity, both hyper-local and global, in Terminal, his singular and definitive artistic statement. Expanding his sound to encompass melancholic ambient composition and grimy rap from prominent Egyptian MC Abyusif, as well as newcomers Abanoub, Mado $am, R-Rhyme, and mysterious Mecca-based vocalist MSYLMA, Terminal finds Zuli drawing upon a multiplicity of personal experiences in a concerted effort to upend preconceptions of what an Egyptian artist "should" sound like. In Zuli's own words: "In a world that feels like it's regressing into tribalism, many of us who don't fit into any one specific group identity feel sidelined at best. When people talk to me, whether it be the press or peers in the scene I operate in, I am often approached with a preconceived notion of pretty much everything from my influences to and tastes to my politics and lifestyle, solely based on my nationality. It is a caricature that has proven very marketable, one that makes for a more interesting read/conversation/booking, apparently, than a multi-faceted (hence unique) human personality just like each and every one of us." Across the 14 tracks of Terminal, the Cairean artist smartly unpacks and dissolves those lazy pre- or misconceptions by forming his own, syncretic musical language. Meshing the rhythmic grammar of hip hop and club styles with the Arabic dialects of his MCs and vocalist and the free syntax of ambient music, he dissolves and undermines outmoded ideas of exotification, presenting an image of himself that's more akin to the reality of Cairo and the sci-fi idea of P.K.D's scramble suits than any cliche conjured by music media. With controlled aggression and a gauntleted grasp of chaos, Zuli serves big highlights in vocal pieces such as the opener "Nari", featuring all the MCs entangled in a noxious noise rap clash, which smartly contrasts the haunting plangency of MSYLMA's lament on "Kollu I-Joloud". Vocals only account for half of the album; Zuli really comes into his own the sparring grime instrumental "Bump" and the sawn-off junglism "Wreck", and the album's more delirious moments, like the poly-chromatic designs of "He's Hearing Voices" and the heat-warped geolocators diffused into the ambient keen and astral jazz flourishes of "Follow Your Breath". Mastered by Helmut Erler at Dubplates & Mastering. Design by Dave Gaskarth, photography by Selim El Sadek.

SUNN TRIO Fayrus LP
More than ten years after the demise of Sun City Girls as an entity, something wild and weird has now surfaced, grown and ripened in the heat and dust of the same desert. Described as deep spirited, Arabic-music-tinged free jazz-punk and harsh exotica, Sunn Trio's ever-evolving ensemble digests a number of genres, spitting them back out in creative destruction. Carrying on a long tradition of sun-beaten Phoenix punk, Sunn Trio evokes the sweltering and hallucinatory Arizona desert. Echoes of Sonny Sharrock, John McLaughlin, and Sir Richard Bishop can be heard in Joel Robinson's fiery blurs of guitar. Imagine the Thinking Fellers Union Local 282 in full force, echoing from behind a curtain of bitter haze. Founded by Robinson in 2010, the ever-changing band has been constantly recording and self-releasing material in the form of tapes, and now deliver, their first LP, Fayrus. Fayrus ("virus" in Arabic) will be released as a one-time edition.Alan Bishop on Fayrus: "Wielding Indo-Arabian saz and white lightning six-string shrapnel amidst an alligator snapping turtle's rhythm section, this trio-quartet-sextet may also sprout horns, flutes, animal skins, or shadow gamelan to faithfully demolish that whiny and predictable listening experience of today's tepidly lazy, underachieving experimental music scene. FUKUI, RYO Mellow Dream LP
New "regular edition" on 140 gram vinyl. We Release Jazz (WRWTFWW Records' new sister-label) present the official reissue of criminally overlooked Japanese jazz gem Mellow Dream by Hokkaido pianist wunderkind Ryo Fukui, originally released in 1977. Released in conjunction with the its legendary predecessor 1976's Scenery (WRJ 001CD/LP/LTD-LP). Firmly standing on the foundation he laid down with Scenery, Ryo Fukui continues his exploration of modal, bop, and cool jazz sounds with meticulous grace and absolute mastery. As its title suggests, Mellow Dream ventures into slightly mellower, more soulful, and sometimes more contemplative territories (the Bill Evans-reminiscent "Mellow Dream" and "My Foolish Heart") while still packing the commanding punch Fukui's work is loved for, as heard on the amazingly bombastic "Baron Potato Blues" or the gigantic McCoy Tyner/John Coltrane-influenced "Horizon" which sees each member of the trio -- Satoshi Denpo is on bass and Yoshinori Fukui is on drums -- demonstrating their virtuosity for nine exhilarating minutes. With his sophomore album, Ryo Fukui swings from melancholy to vibrant joy with ease, and reminds you that jazz is best served with a pinch of blues, and displays an immensely rare combination of pure talent, unique personal approach and focused discipline. The man undeniably deserves a spot in the pantheon of all-time great jazz pianists. After releasing the outstanding Scenery and Mellow Dream back-to-back, Ryo Fukui worked on developing his live skills, often performing at Sapporo's Slowboat Jazz Club (which he co-founded with his wife Yasuko Fukui), and even releasing two live albums. He sadly passed away in March 2016, leaving behind a legacy of works that all jazz lovers should explore. Sourced from the original masters. Mastered at half speed; 140 gram vinyl; includes sticker.

MKWAJU ENSEMBLE (MIDORI TAKADA) MKWAJU LP
LP version. 140 gram vinyl; 350 gram sleeve, with sticker. WRWTFWW Records announces the highly anticipated official reissue of holy grail album MKWAJU by acclaimed Japanese percussionist Midori Takada's MKWAJU Ensemble, sourced from the original masters and available in two versions: a vinyl LP cut at Emil Berliner Studios (formerly the in-house recording department of Deutsche Grammophon) and a digipack CD. Originally recorded in February and March 1981 and released by fabled Japanese avant-garde label Better Days (home of Ryuichi Sakamato's debut album, Yasuaki Shimizu's Kakashi (1982), Colored Music's self-titled LP (WRWTFWW 024CD/LP, 2018) and many more) MKWAJU is the fruit of the collaboration between Takada's crew and world-famous composer/musical director Joe Hisaishi, the man behind most of Hayao Miyazaki's Studio Ghibli anime soundtracks and over 100 other films scores, including Takeshi Kitano's Sonatine (1993), Hana-Bi (1997), and Kikujiro (1999). The ensemble's transcendental wonder is, in fact, the first-ever Midori Takada album and the first-ever Joe Hisaishi-produced album: historic. Led by Midori Takada on marimba, gong, vibraphone, and tom tom, MKWAJU is an inventive and riveting take on Eastern and Western minimalist traditions, African rhythms, and early electronica. Drawing from its jazz-rooted polyrhythmic improvisations in the most inventive ways, the album covers a wide spectrum of sounds, from colorful dance floor-ready percussion pieces that stand somewhere between proto-techno and experimental synth-pop, to cinematic ambient landscapes and ethereal drone delicacies. The feverishly sought-after full-length is a stepping-stone in Midori Takada's career and an all-around pioneering album. Alongside Takada and Hisaishi (who not only produced the album but also played synthesizers), personnel on MKWAJU includes famed Japanese musicians Yoji Sadanari and Hideki Matsutake of KI-Motion (WRWTFWW 026CD/LP, 2018) fame, Junko Arase (heard on Satoshi Ashikawa's legendary Still Way - Wave Notation 2(1982)), and Pecker (whose stacked resume boasts collaborations with Ryuichi Sakamoto and Jun Fukamachi).
