GOLDEN FILTER, THE Talk Talk Talk 12"
The first release on The Golden Filter's new label, 4GN3S (pronounced "Agnes") is The Golden Filter's "Talk Talk Talk", along with three remixes. LA's Cooper Saver provides the dancefloor fire with his absolute banger of a remix. Fantastic Twins is the guise of Julienne Dessagne, originally from Paris and now based in Berlin. She provides a tripped-out rework that forays into unexpected twists and turns, but still retains her trademark analog psychedelic dancefloor vibes. Kasper Bjørke teams up with Colder for an epic take on "Talk Talk Talk". Minimal and hypnotic, dubbed-out vocal snippets fly in-and-out of a one-note entrancing bassline.

7TH PLAIN, THE Chronicles II CD
In the afterglow of rave's white heat, the mid-'90s were a period of going as far out in all directions as possible; Luke Slater's The 7th Plain tracks were about exploration of the deep space of the imagination. Cosmic, analog, orchestrated, they still represent some of the most emotionally intense music ever to come out of the techno realm. Whether built on percussive frameworks or sweeping nebulas of dissipated sound, Slater's synthesizers still sing space-travelers' tales compellingly and beautifully. For this reason A-TON launched back in 2016 with The 7th Plain's Chronicles I (ATON 001CD/LP), establishing itself as a platform for archive, ambient and art-related releases. Now, with the release of Chronicles II, the journey continues further into outer and inner space. Like its predecessor, Chronicles II is divided between previously released material from the aforementioned albums, as well as four unreleased future classics: "Silver Shinhook", "Wand Star", "I Think I Think Too Much" and "JDC". Luke Slater pioneered the UK's electronic landscape as Translucent, 4 Slots For Bill, Planetary Assault Systems, The 7th Plain, Clementine, and later as L.B. Dub Corp, by partly focusing on, partly bypassing the traditional, puristic values of techno. Together with Dave Sumner (Function) and Steve Bicknell he also operates as LSD. Chronicles is a three-part series of Slater's The 7th Plain project, including both previously released and unreleased material. All music is available for the first time on CD. Ultimately, when listening to all three parts of Chronicles, it's apparent that 7th Plain's music is cut from the same emotional cloth, one related strongly to the backroom, the chillout, the after-party, the solo headphone voyage. These weren't and never should be considered separate zones from the dance floor. In other words, as Slater puts it, in the mid-'90s, they were "part of the night, part of the experience, where ideas could be shared." And like Global Communication, Mira Calix, The Future Sound of London, and the Artificial Intelligence generation, Slater's 7th Plain was a response to those hallucinatory, spiritual, but still social spaces at the heart of underground communities; and the magic is still strong in it.

Now, with the release of Chronicles II and Chronicles III, the journey continues further into outer and inner space. Chronicles III is made up solely of music from the General Production Recordings label catalog and stylistically skews less toward percussive techno-funk and more toward free-form broken rhythms; though tracks such as "Lost", "Time Melts" or "Millentum" stand strong as hybrid pillars of both. Luke Slater pioneered the UK's electronic landscape as Translucent, 4 Slots For Bill, Planetary Assault Systems, The 7th Plain, Clementine, and later as L.B. SACRED TAPESTRY Shader Complete CD
Aguirre Records present Shader Complete, a definitive version of the Shader album by vaporwave pioneer Ramona Vektroid, here under the moniker Sacred Tapestry. Ramona is widely recognized as instigator of the vaporwave genre with her celebrated album Floral Shoppe (2011). Vektroid (Ramona Xavier) is an electronic musician and artist based in Portland, but her reputation has hinged almost entirely on her hypertextual virtual presence. While she's most often pigeonholed as being a primary artist behind vaporwave -- a net-based microgenre notorious for its wholesale appropriations and meme-like propagation -- she has been releasing music since 2006 in a variety of styles and under a dizzying array of nom de plumes, from Vektordrum and Macintosh Plus to Laserdisc Visions and ?????VIRTUAL. Within the sprawling, obsessive vaporwave community, Vektroid's 2011 album Floral Shoppe (as Macintosh Plus) has become canonized as its most representative transmission, an unlikely feat for a style of music that challenged not only our taste profiles, but also what could be considered "art" to begin with. But like most styles of music, what's on paper never aligns perfectly with the actual music, and Vektroid is a shining example of an artist whose talents extend beyond the regurgitated checklists of a now concretized genre. Two of her strongest albums, though, served as beautiful outliers that continue to resist easy categorization. Shader Complete is an exquisite, multi-faceted album that pivots effortlessly between widescreen electronic synthscapes, atmospheric drones, and claustrophobic appropriations. It's the latest permutation of a release that originally arrived in summer 2012 as Sacred Tapestry. That version, titled Shader, was written during the first couple months at her new home of Portland, marking a period of instability and existential confusion. Concerned at the time that this was her final release, the record was paired with a cryptic note about body transmigration from fictitious Hong Kong company PrismCorp, hinting at the possibility of the album being her "final transmission". It wasn't until 2016 when it was reworked to its current state as Shader Complete, which saw Xavier reinterpreting the album to include orphaned tracks from the Color Ocean Road (2012, as Vektroid) sessions. This makes Shader Complete something like a lost sequel to Color Ocean Road. Mastered by Rashad Becker.

NEW DREAMS LTD. Sleepline CD
Aguirre Records present Sleepline, a crucial album by vaporwave pioneer Ramona Vektroid, here released under the moniker New Dreams Ltd. Two of her strongest albums, though, served as beautiful outliers that continue to resist easy categorization. Sleepline (released as New Dreams Ltd.), plays in the liminal space between states of consciousness, inducing a hazy, deteriorating quality that stands in contrast to Shader Complete's mostly hi-definition aesthetics (ZORN 057CD/LP). It was written in winter 2013-2014, but it didn't see an official release until 2016. Originally conceived as a Sacred Tapestry sequel called Transcontinent, the album saw Xavier returning to her plunderphonic tactics, looping and down-pitching what sounds like decades-old Japanese commercials. This time, Xavier sought out source material that would more readily fall under fair use, attempting to bridge the aesthetic gap between her works by foregrounding her editing techniques as much as transforming the source material. Mastered by Rashad Becker.

BETA BAND Heroes To Zeros CD
Arguably one of the most acclaimed and loved bands of the past 20 years, by both fans and their musical peers alike, The Beta Band formed in St. Andrews, Scotland, in 1996. Innovative and singular, their unique musical and aesthetic approach to everything they did set them far apart from their musical contemporaries. Together for a relatively short period of time, the three albums and three EPs they released between 1996 and 2004 would nonetheless help define them as one of the most exciting and cherished bands of their generation. Heroes To Zeros is the third and final studio album by The Beta Band released in 2004. It was mixed by famed producer Nigel Godrich and rose to number 18 in the UK charts. Three-panel digisleeve with 12-page poster booklet.

LES NEGRESSES VERTES C'est Pas La Mer A Boire (1987-1993) 2CD
Les Negresses Vertes' retrospective C'est Pas La Mer A Boire (1987-1993) features the tracks "Voilà l'Eté", "Zobi La Mouche", "Sous Le Soleil De Bodega", "Face À La Mer, and more. Taking a punk-like approach to a mixture of Latin, rai, and folk music, Les Negresses Vertes create an infectious dance music. Initially comprised of family members, friends and lovers, Les Negresses Vertes have come a long way since their earliest performances. Although most members of the band didn't play an instrument until coming together in late 1987, the group evolved into a very exciting ensemble. Les Negresses Vertes' climb to world-wide success has not come easy. On January 22, 1993, the group's lyricist, Noel Rota, best known as "Helno" and "Helno Rota De Lourcqua," died while attempting to overcome a serious drug addiction. Rota's twin brother, Ritter/Thierry, continues to perform with Haine Et Ses Amours. Since Rota's death, guitarist/vocalist Stefane Mellino and accordionist/vocalist Matthias Canavese, also known as Canavese and Matias, have assumed his role in the front line of Les Negresses Vertes. A native of Algeria, Mellino has lived in Paris since the early 1980s. During the six years before the band was formed, he spent his summers working in his parent s' fishing net business and played with bands in Paris the rest of the year. The youngest member of Les Negresses Vertes, Canavese inherited much of his talent from his father, a laborer who became an entertainment promoter at the age of forty and now directs a circus school. Although he trained as an acrobat, he was forced to seek other avenues of expression following an accident. Other members of Les Negresses Vertes include guitarist, bassist and vocalist Jean-Marie Paulus, trumpet/trombone player and vocalist Abraham Sirinix, and pianist, guitarist and vocalist Jo Roz.

HAINO/JIM O'ROURKE/OREN AMBARCHI, KEIJI Now While It's Still Warm Let Us Pour in All the Mystery LP
Limited 2018 repress; LP version. "Following on from 2012's acclaimed Imikizushi (BT 007CD/LP), Now While It's Still Warm Let Us Pour in All the Mystery is the fourth release from the established power trio of Keiji Haino, Jim O'Rourke, and Oren Ambarchi, recorded in January 2012 at their yearly concert at SuperDeluxe, Tokyo. While the trio's two previous double LP releases featured sprawling, side-long performances, the music here is presented in six shorter pieces, each one displaying a different side of the trio's interactions, from holy minimalism to cave-man rock. The record begins with the trio joined by special guests Charlemagne Palestine and Eiko Ishibashi, conjuring ghostly tones from wine glasses as an accompaniment to Haino's angelic vocals. This 10-minute piece, which moves from near silence and the sound of onstage footsteps to a stunning passage of clean guitar work from Haino, is steeped in the same mysterious atmospherics as Haino's great folk-drone project, Nijumu. When Haino turns to the flute on the LP's second track, a performance that clearly demonstrates the importance of the special concept of space and silence (ma) that Haino has developed from traditional Japanese aesthetics, O'Rourke and Ambarchi transform into the delicate and probing rhythm section of a classic '70s fusion side. When the trio returns to the crushing free-rock of their last two records, O'Rourke's heavily effected bass rolling alongside Ambarchi's tumbling rhythms as Haino's guitar squeals and slashes above them, their performances display a new purposefulness and concision. Now truly operating as a band after a number of years of playing together, the pieces here feel like instant rocks songs -- O'Rourke and Ambarchi instantly locking into solid riffs over which Haino alternates between jarring no-wave chords, intense soloing and his signature vocalizations. When the trio slow down and stretch out, the rhythm section plods like an abstracted Crazy Horse on the brink of collapse, and Haino elicits long, mournful solos reminiscent of the first classic Fushitsusha double live LP. Perhaps more accessible than the trio's previous recordings because of its range and concision, Now While It's Still Warm... exudes the dark, alien quality of Haino's greatest recordings and testifies to the strength of the musical bond that has developed between these three players. --Francis Plagne, Jan 2013." Limited edition LP in a lavish gatefold with a printed inner sleeve. Design by Stephen O'Malley with high quality live shots by Ujin Matsuo and stunning artwork by Shunichiro Okada.

RONGETZ FOUNDATION, THE Alphabet City Music Club CD
It's ten years that The Rongetz Foundation is hanging around the five boroughs. Ten years of wonderful jazz-tainted recordings, with Gary Bartz, Gregory Porter, Corey Fonville, and Ronnie Cuber, to name a few, "stained" with the grit of soul and funk music that Rongetz (aka Stephane Ronget) likes to bring to the table. This album, Alphabet City Music Club is a marvelous example of that stylish balance established in between raw and sophisticated feel. The place of the recording first, Alphabet City, is a genuine inner town in Manhattan that was for long time defined like this: "Avenue A, you're Alright. Avenue B, you're Brave. Avenue C, you're Crazy. Avenue D, you're Dead". There are two sessions that are part of the album: one is very much jazz-funk oriented with Corey Fonville (drums), Corcoran Holt (bass), Mathis Picard (keys), Morgan Guerin (tenor sax/EWI), and Erena Terakubo (alto sax/flute). The other one spreads soul music all around with: Homer Steinweiss (drums), Jeremy Kay (bass), Kyle Koehler (organ), and Guerin (tenor sax). The two sessions, ultimately came together with the help of talented young vocalists Alina Engibaryan (Snarky Puppy), Vuyo Sotashe, Vanisha Gould, Lewis Parker, and Mr Day. Mix all those elements in a rusty blender and you will enjoy the bootleg Bourbon, hard shake that is Alphabet City Music Club.

MATTHEWS, CARL Call For World Saviours CD
Bureau B presents a reissue of Carl Matthews' Call For World Saviours, originally issued in 1984. Mesmerizing DIY electronic music from Cumbria, UK, influenced by the Berlin School but even more by Tim Blake, Call For World Saviours was originally released 1984 on cassette only; this is this music's first time on CD and vinyl."Carl Matthews is by no means immune to the maelstrom of geocaching notebooks. Krautrock (tick), guerrilla DIY cassette-era artist (tick), under-rated UK electronic composer (tick). Man with a beard, surrounded by synths. Tick. Best of all, he was once described as the Edgar Froese of Cumbria. The Tangerine Dream legend needs no introduction, but the Cumbrian question deserves further scrutiny. In spite of the irresistible urge felt by many to claim Matthews for the Berlin School, this is unquestionably an artist who wrote music far from the madding krautrock crowd. Instead, he worked in isolation, splendid or otherwise. The question remains, is there a suspension bridge which connects Carl Matthews to the mainland European tradition of Harmonia, Cluster, and Tangerine Dream? 'I was at a crossroads in my life aged 28, early influences were krautrock: NEU!, Kraftwerk, Cosmic Jokers, etc. One day, I was listening to Tim Blake, and my inner voice said ''I can do that!'', Carl recalls. Whilst his music clearly bears the hallmarks of superb craftsmanship -- his mesmerizing soundscapes more than a match for any of his contemporaries -- Carl Matthews was, and still is, a truly independent artist, from the means of production to the published recordings. If it is possible to identify a scene along the lines described above, Matthews was not part of it. 'I was totally alone in doing this; no one was interested in my musical taste at that time. As far as I know the electronic/new wave music scene in Carlisle was virtually zero.' Happily for fans of his music, recent years have seen a resurgence in activity. Unwaveringly self-effacing, Carl Matthews continues to make music which is liberated from the constraints of ego, allowing one to wander the magnetic fields of his imagination. Today, in his own words, he is 'an old guy who likes making sounds for library/production companies', which says it all, really. The signs are all there in Call For World Saviours, music which is both timeless and very much of its time, a disappearing act on the part of its creator whose character nevertheless resonates in every note." --Harry Calvino.

MONOLITH GROWS! Black and Supersonic CD
Black and Supersonic, the second Monolith Grows! (ex-Monolith) record, is a violent and angry disc. Stoner and grunge sonority that progressively blend together. It's Seattle that projects itself into the hyperspace, into the cold lunar deserts, through rains of monolithic meteorites. It's a comics tribute to the superheroes of rock n' roll, to the fallen deities but also a grim and grotesque look at the contemporary society. Black and Supersonic is the first chapter of a Marvellian saga and its protagonists are scratchy riffs, edgy rhythms, and a powerful and Cornellian voice.

ALLAN & THE STRANGEST, TOM Dear Boy CD
The story of Tom Allan, whose song "Sensation" made a BBC moderator describe him as "the modern day Billy Bragg" starts off in Bury St Edmunds, a small town in the east of England. Tom grew up as the son of a German mother and a British soldier. His fifth birthday present is a drum kit. A couple of years later he takes lessons. When Tom comes home from school, he often finds piles of CD's, cassettes and vinyl records from acts like Elvis Costello, The Clash, Sex Pistols, and Stereophonics on the dinner table with a post-it from his father saying "Listen to this!". Later on Tom teaches himself to play guitar, bass, harmonica and piano. Listen closely because this boy has some stories to tell! Tom is now 25 years old and he has shared stages with the Undertones, Glen Matlock (Sex Pistols), TV Smith, and The Ruts. Tom is a skinny, good looking and well-dressed young man. His accent reveals his working-class heritage and not only visually, he would fit in the line-up of British guitar-bands like The Libertines or Arctic Monkeys. This is where the story of Tom Allan as a solo artist ends, but it marks the beginning of Tom Allan & The Strangest! It is one of those nights in a pub: open mic-session, having a few pints and Tom meets Evan Beltran who is causing a stir as The Strangest. Being on the same wavelength doesn't even closely describe what happens next because both of them are the perfect match. They share the same heroes from the cultural history and they have the same ambitions. The Mexican guitarist and the half British / half German songwriter decide to join forces that same night. Along with their band they play handmade rock'n'roll, following the path of Oasis, The Libertines, and The Clash. Together, they have now recorded their debut album, Dear Boy in Hamburg. Are Tom Allan & The Strangest the future of rock'n'roll? Who knows? And most of all, who cares? What is sure is that they, who dream of bringing back honest energy, melodious hook lines wrapped up with rough guitar sounds, melancholy and most of all attitude to the pop world, are highly talented young musicians and lyricists who can take the best from the recent history of music and modernize it and transport it to the present age.

C.H.E.W. Feeding Frenzy LP
C.H.E.W. (from Chicago, Illinois) are the realest of deals. Feeding Frenzy, their debut, starts with a flurry of drums and goes straight into aggro-heavy, straight-to-the-point hardcore. It gets the adrenaline flowing so fast one can practically see it burst out of one's chest and march on over to the front of the show to get a circle pit going. Most punk packs a punch; this simply pulverizes, in the best possible way. Four anarcho kids with righteous ideals, C.H.E.W. are here to make one sit up and take notice. Well, what else can one do when the blitzkrieg rains forth as powerfully and scintillatingly as this? The album barely lets up for a second; even when they slow down for a spacious creepy-crawl just before the midway point, one can feel the tension ratcheting up another notch or 12, just to keep the anticipation high for the rush of hi-velocity chaos that's surely about to hit home. Feeding Frenzy is just under 31 minutes of noise that'll leave you floored and totally swept up in adoration.

CURVED AIR Air Cut CD
"Originally released on the Warner Bros. label in 1974, Air Cut featured a new line-up of Curved Air featuring Sonja Kristina (vocals, acoustic guitar), Mike Wedgwood (bass, vocals), Kirby Gregory (guitar), Eddie Jobson (keyboards, violin) and Jim Russell (drums). Although original members Darryl Way, Francis Monkman, and Florian Pilkington Miksa had departed, Sonja Kristina assembled a new group drawn from some immense talents, including those of eighteen-year old Eddie Jobson. Perhaps one of Curved Air's most progressive albums, Air Cut featured some outstanding compositions such as 'The Purple Speed Queen' and the ten-minute epic 'Metamorphosis'. This new edition of Air Cut has been re-mastered from the recently located original master tapes for the very first time (with previous CD editions being taken from vinyl transfers). The illustrated booklet restores the original album artwork and features an essay by Malcolm Dome and exclusive band interviews."

DEODATO/OS CATEDRATICOS, EUMIR Ataque CD
Far Out Recordings presents a reissue of Eumir Deodato's Ataque, originally released in 1965. One of Brazil's most prolific artists, Deodato has racked up 16 platinum albums, won a Grammy (and been nominated for two more), and sold over 250 million records in the USA alone. After moving from Rio de Janeiro to New York in the late 60's, Deodato would work as a composer, arranger, producer and keyboardist on nearing 500 records, under his own name and with the likes of Aretha Franklin, Earth Wind, and Fire, Frank Sinatra, Kool & The Gang, George Benson, Tom Jobim, and Bjork, to name a just a few. Before that, a young Deodato had already cemented his status in Brazil as one of the country's top musical minds. In the mid-sixties, when he wasn't working with the likes of Roberto Menescal, Joao Donato, and Marcos Valle, Deodato recorded a string of albums with his lesser known instrumental samba jazz and bossa nova ensemble Os Catedráticos. A masterpiece of hip Brazilian swing, Ataque reflects the deeper, groovier side of that magical, hazy sound of sixties Rio, with monster samba grooves backing big brass arrangements and scorching organ solos. Amongst Deodato's own tracks, there are compositions by Marcos & Paulo Sergio Valle, Baden Powell, and Luiz Bonfa, arranged for a big horn section, which includes trombone player Edson Maciel, and is given an extra dose of cool from the inimitable drums of Wilson Das Neves and Ruebens Bassini on percussion. An elusive album in the canon of killer, groovy Brazilian music, with vinyl copies near-impossible to find for less than three digits, Ataque finally gets the official Far Out reissue treatment in being remastered from the original tapes. Now available for the first time outside of South America. Personnel: Eumir Deodato - leader, arrangements, conductor; Maurílio Santos - trumpet; Walter Rosa - tenor sax; Aurino Ferreira - baritone sax; Edson Maciel - trombone; Ruebens Bassini - congas, pandeiro; Humberto Garin - guiro; Jorginho Arena - congas; Sergio Barroso - baixos; Wilson Das Neves - drums; Geraldinho Vespar - guitar.

KALLA & LE SUPER MOJO, PAT Jongler CD
Favorite Recordings presents Jongler, the first album by Pat Kalla, produced by Bruno "Patchworks" Hovart. Pat Kalla is a musician, singer and storyteller. Patrice is his birth name, in tribute to the great Lumumba! Lover of words, French language, and music of course, he was born in Lyon, to a Cameroonian father, musician and political activist, and a French and literary mother. On Jongler, he explores from his childhood the soul, the slam, the funk ...and the art of telling stories, life being a great one. After years of touring alongside many bands (Conte & Soul, Legend of Eboa King, Mento Cloub, Voilaaa Sound System), several acclaimed tracks on two albums by Voilaaa (FVR 107CD/LP, 2013 and FVR 132CD/LP, 2017) and recently an acclaimed first EP revealing some hot singles such as "Lady Angola" or "Ancien Combattant", he comes back with this project to put a bit of primordial lightness in a rainy world. Jongler is a tribute to the African culture in honor of a father with "Sawa" origins, the tribe from the people of Makossa. Jojo Ngallé, Moni Bilé, Pain, Manu Dibango, Franco, Rochereau, Kabaselé, Fela, François Nkotti & The Black Style, all these legends' music has turned on the family turntable and the collection whetted the child's appetite. Through this new trip, Kalla revisits styles that are sometimes little-known to Western audiences, such as high life, makossa, Angolan music, afrobeat, afro-disco, and others. One could talk about "Franc CFA", one could talk about Jacques Foccart, but it's better to dance, because "the dancer seems naive, but his feet must be connected with earth to understand history." Backed by the Super Mojo Disco, a hyperactive band from Lyon with deep groove and positive energy, Pat Kalla offers us an anti-crisis project, where swaying and feel-good humor is mandatory! (NEW ENGLAND) PATRIOTS Patriots LP
"Patriots is the first actual vinyl record dedicated entirely to the music of Boston's boss post-core art-punk trio, (New England) Patriots. Their other two long players are splits, with Palberta (FTR166EP, 2015) and Skimask. And while those two bands are certainly estimable in their own rights, the unadulterated churn of (NE) Patriots gives this album a very special squirm. Certain aspects of the blabber still make me think of the late, lamented Cows, and their whole whizzing raunch shebang. But there's nothing in my personal listening history that has this exact brand of sonic adventurism. The Pats still just use guitars, drums and tongues at work in shaping their sounds (certain bass register tones being ascribed to fat strings, perhaps?), and they have a beautifully anarchic approach to song assemblage. Some of the tunes stretch out like worms in Gibby Haynes' colon, others are compacted the way the Hobson Brothers' nut sacs might have if they'd given each other cube-dunks back in Killdozer's heyday. A firm and mighty sound." --Byron Coley, 2018. Numbered edition of 300.

A: PFEFFER KWITTER Peller LP
"... When I first met Chris, Jess and Dan, they were all living in Western MA and I was in Eastern MA. And when they recorded this album in the Pacific Northwest, I had just moved to the Pacific Northwest. Though Chris and Jess had lived and created music in the Bay Area and Portland, Maine prior to their tenure in Western MA and have since moved back to the Bay Area, their music (Fat Worm of Error, Angst Hase Pfeffer Nase, Schurt Kwitters, White Limo) came to define certain aspects of the Western MA 'noise' scene of the late '90s/early aughts... while Dan Greenwood's music as Diagram A came to define an almost photonegative of these qualities, sharing some of the absurdity, conceptualism and instability with an added intensity, viscerality and violence . . . Once in Washington, they recorded multiple sessions of Chris' floortop guitar and electronics, a guitar Dan had modified with motors and springs, Dan's homemade cracked electronic circuitry, and one of Seattle instrument builder Dave Knott's stringboards. Combined with these were recordings made in and around Port Townsend's historic, decaying military installation at Fort Worden State Park, including recordings in Fort Worden's legendary two-million-gallon cistern, which has a dizzying 45 seconds of natural reverb. The cistern is well known as being the recording site of the very first Deep Listening Band album by Pauline Oliveros, Stuart Dempster and Panaiotis, released in 1989. Chris, Jess & Dan brought down an analog synth, a clarinet, a Marantz tape recorder (and some tapes) and wandered throughout the cistern's roughly 200-foot diameter. Side one begins and ends with a heavy emphasis on skittery, sometimes abrasive, anxiously controlled electronics, particularly the idiosyncratic sound of Dan's crackling devices. Things become more mechanistic and open before offering a glimpse of the cistern recordings which will come to dominate side two, but the side closes out with more sonic steel wool. This serves to highlight the spaciousness of side two. The group utilizes the unique acoustic properties of the cistern to great effect, allowing the sounds to activate the space's resonance and then step aside. Amidst this Gothic cathedral of reverberating tones are delicately interwoven recordings of trains and thistly electronics creating a palpable foreground and background . . ." --Greg Kelley, Seattle WA, 11:11pm, 11/11/18

RUSSELL & NOEL MEEK, BRUCE Classical Music LP
"You know that old phrase, 'Teach a penguin to cuss, and you'll never have to buy another comedy record' I'm sure you do. But what about its codicil? 'Teach a guitarist to play synth, and you'll never have to buy a new age record?' If you know that one, you might well be put off by the fact this album features one of New Zealand's most wickedly post-tongue guitar players fiddling about with oscillators and analog synths (in concert with a guy who does this stuff all the time). But you need not fear. The only New Age being brunted about here is the same one Fahey disemboweled back in '97. An ornery cuss, it has lived in the cracks some-damn-place, only re-emerging now that it has been called forth by Bruce Russell and Noel Meek. Much of the sound on Classical Music (how Fahey would have loved everything about this record!) makes me think of Chris Marker's classic film, La Jetée (1962). As you certainly recall, the central motif in that film is the main quay at Aéroport de Paris-Orly, where visitors gather to watch the jets land and take off (just as I did at New York's Idlewild Airport when I was a kid). Well, particularly on the second side, this record is a jolt of aural déjà vu for me. If I close my eyes I can almost see a parade of 707s and DC-8s careening around the flats of Long Island, missing collisions by what seem like a series of miracles to me. Mr. Russell's last LP for us was 2016's Howling and Instability at High Volume Settings (FTR 219LP), and it is a sheer pleasure to realize how unstable he can be on instruments besides the guitar. Mr. Meek is wildly successful at this as well, and the combination is as bracing as an early morning slap of Old Spice. Step up for blast of Classical Music-style reality today. You'll be oh-so-glad you did." --Byron Coley, 2018. Edition of 250.

LANE, WILLIE Known Quantity LP
"Newly remastered reissue of Willie Lane's 2009 solo guitar LP, Known Quantity, originally released on his own Cord Art label. Over the last few years, this album has been requested at the store more often than just about any other, but it sold out not long after it was issued and has risen in price consistently since that time. Listening to Known Quantity, it's not hard to understand why it has such a strong rep. Lane came out the Hampshire College scene that aligned itself with the Apostasy Records crowd (Krefting, Shaw, Rosenblum, etc.). His first known recordings were actually with some of the noisier experimental units associated with this cabal. Willie was based in Philadelphia for a long time after college, where he fell in with Jack Rose and the whole Fishtown scene of the early Oughts. Moving back to the Valley, Willie also began working with Matt Valentine's tribe, and his first solo album,Recliner Ragas, was issued as a C.O.M. CDR in 2006 before getting vinylized by the Humito label in 2012. And keen listeners out there will detect a certain "Spectrasound" feel to some of the electric passages here. The music on Known Quantity is a buttery mix of electric and acoustic string aktion. Samara Lubelski plays bass on one track, but it's all solo apart from that. And it's a wonderland of textures and sound shapes. Some of the pieces are almost straight ahead (somewhat more in tunes with the work Willie does when he plays live), but others are as wobbly and jagged as a drunk peacock. It's an amazing record, and rewards multiple listens with constantly unfolding details. Max Milgram (from Watery Love) did the new cover art (based on the original LP's photographic frontispiece) and the mastering by Carl Saff is mighty nice. Enjoy..." --Byron Coley, 2018. BLOOD QUARTET Until My Darkness Goes LP
"The second LP by Mark Cunningham's current Spanish outfit, Blood Quartet, marks a directional shift from their 2016 debut LP, Deep Red (FTR 283LP). On Until My Darkness Goes the quartet abandons pure instrumentalism, including a few vocal takes by drummer Cândid Coll strewn amidst the album's various tangles. There is also a much more aggressively rockist focus shown at times. Rumor has always been that this is a firm part of the band's live trip, but recorded evidence of it has thus far been scarce. Of course, most of Until My Darkness Goes is in the same great vein as Deep Red. Noirish trumpet drifts across a rotten cityscape, batting down noise guitar rats that pop up from open manhole covers like goddamn Whack-a-Moles. But there are other things going on as well. "Surfing Rueda" sounds like some sort of unholy collaboration between the Raybeats and Sonic Youth. "Stress of Her Regard" plays like Robert Wyatt doing his version of hard rock vocals in front of the Tony Williams Lifetime. "Velvet Love" curls through the air like a smoky reconsideration on Eric Burdon & the Animals' soft-psych phase. It's crazy how fast this record drifts from style to style, although Blood Quartet always touches back to their basic Chet Baker meets Pete Cosey conception. The whole album is a collection of wild moves, as you might guess from the fact they cop a Stones quote for its title, and even name a track after the Representative from Corwood. I can't wait to hear what these guys get up to next, but for now we've all got plenty to digest. So dig in." --Byron Coley, 2018. Edition of 250.

STATE CHAMPION Send Flowers LP
"Although I have lately taken to associating Louisville's Ryan Davis with the maniacal blurt of Tropical Trash, I am reminded by the release of the fourth State Champion LP, Send Flowers, that this is his original mothership. Send Flowers is State Champion's most fully realized Beard Rock expression to date. The surrealist underpinnings of Ryan's lyrics are heavier than ever, but that is balanced by the band's most epiphanically tasty licking. The pieces fit together with such easy organic grace, it's tempting to suspect they're simple. But the closer you listen to the parts the more complex they appear. This begins with Ryan's words, which are sung so gracefully you have to concentrate to pick up on the timeless phrases he invents here, but when you pay attention they jump up and just about bite you. The same thing goes for the instrumentation, which initially passes as a mere recreation of lost Topanga threads, but surpasses those bounds with the something approaching the same assurance as the David Lindley-led band on Terry Reid's River LP (the transcendent Beard Rock masterpiece). Send Flowers will almost surely be misapprehended by lazy farmers and the cows who follow them. It may also be anathema to folks who primarily head-link it to Tropical Trash, but for anyone who digs the new generation of singer/songwriters out there, from Wooden Wand to Ned Collette to the legacy of the Silver Jews. Peel slowly and see." --Byron Coley, 2018.

FUNKE, MAXINE Silk LP
"Silk is the fantastic third LP by Maxine Funke, a New Zealand musician whose first recordings were with the legendary $100 Band (Funke, Alastair Galbraith, and Mike Dooley!), whose music was drifting experimental dust of a very high order. Maxine's first two solo albums, Lace (2008) and Felt (2012) (originally released as CDR on Galbraith's Next Best Way and a lathe on Epic Sweep, respectively), were reissued by Time-Lag to great acclaim in 2016, securing her place in the upper echelons of contemporary folk inventors. With the release of Silk, Ms. Funke manages to create an album that merges both of these style threads. Many of the tracks are cast in an intimate mood congruent with artists like Sibylle Baier, Barbara Manning, Myriam Gendron, Joanne Robertson, and other women who have pulled sweetly dark sounds from pockets of deep emotion, abetted largely by acoustic guitar. On a few other tracks, electronic instrumentals hearken back to her work with transceivers in the $100 Band days. The balance between these posts is delicately intoxicating. A readymade classic from start to finish, Silk travels a brilliant series of spaceways with grace and assurance. We should all be so lucky." --Byron Coley, 2018. Edition of 400.

SUNFLARE ON 2LP
Feeding Tube Records and Cardinal Fuzz announce, at last, the long-awaited Sunflare album, ON. After three previous releases of brain-frying, high volume, pedal-to-the-metal freak-outs, Sunflare are at last back to bring some serious brain-buzzing, primitive punk scorch to a prevailing M.O.R. psych scene in need of some serious face melting. Hailing from Lisboa, Portugal, Sunflare are a scorchin' power trio specializing in high-energy Psychedelic Speed Freak wipe-outs. ON is here to fry minds with a driving rhythm section that brings new meaning to the word relentless and a guitar player that is perpetually freeform feedback soloing over every second committed to wax via the gnarliest of fuzz and wah-wah pedal abuse. Over two sides of vinyl there is never any let up as Sunflare deliver a blazing eruption of ear-piercing sound. With ON also comes a second LP of the long out-of-print "C30 - Red Tape" release (only ever available as a cassette back in 2010). As soon as you put this on, you will see why both Feeding Tube and Cardinal Fuzz were so desperate to include this as part of the ON package and commit it to vinyl at long last. If you like High Rise, Comets On Fire, and drinking petrol, then this is the band and record for you. ON is presented in a 320gsm wide spine card sleeve; comes with a download code.

REICH/TERRY RILEY, STEVE Six Pianos / Keyboard Study #1 LP
2018 repress; LP version. Includes download code. After the widely noticed performance at the "Acht Brücken Festival 2016" at Cologne's Philharmonic Hall, Gregor Schwellenbach, Hauschka, Erol Sarp (of Grandbrothers), Daniel Brandt and Paul Frick (both of Brandt Brauer Frick) and John Kameel Farah release their interpretation of Steve Reich's "Six Pianos" as a studio recording via FILM. The re-recording of this piece is an interpretation of Reich's composition but still far more than just that - it is a modern approach to his idea behind it. The basic idea came up at the beginning of the '70s at the Baldwin Piano & Organ Company in New York. During a rehearsal phase, which Steve Reich spent in this very piano store, the idea emerged of writing a composition for all the grand pianos available to him at the company. By the time of the finished piece, the actual number of pianos had settled down to six, where "Six Pianos" developed in 1973. On the occasion of his 80th birthday, the six pianists declare their love to Steve Reich with this release. Shaped by electronic club music as well as their classical education, they form "Six Pianos" in dignified modernity and top it off with today's sound aesthetics and technical recording possibilities. Presented here is not the recording from the Kölner Philharmonie (Cologne Philharmonics), but the ensemble playing six different grand pianos in six different locations throughout Germany. Each pianist performed his part on his piano using his typical studio equipment and passed the recording over to the next one. Thus the six characteristic and individual timbres of the performers overlay to create the overall picture - "Six Pianos" the way it should be looked at in 2016. Jan Brauer mixed "Six Pianos" in the studio while Lukas Vogel provided delays for the "Keyboard Study #1". "Keyboard Study #1" by Terry Riley is a worthy companion for Reich's composition. The piece is kind of a building set of ever lengthening, repetitive patterns played against each other with the right and left hand displaced. The composition proposes various possible combinations for the performer to choose from and repeat at will. And what the performers have chosen proves Gregor Schwellenbach's assumption: "Terry Riley's and Steve Reich's music are open doors for pianists socialized by pop music and their audience."

HOWLIN' WOLF The Howlin' Wolf Album LP
2018 repress. "It's not often that an album disavowed by its own author at the time of release goes on to become considered a modern classic. Yet that's exactly what happened with Chicago blues legend Howlin' Wolf's 1969 LP The Howlin' Wolf Album, a release that has since attained mythical status due to the controversy behind it. Released on Cadet Records, a subsidiary of legendary imprint Chess Records, The Howlin' Wolf Album was a radical experiment for a well-established artist: attempt to integrate electric instruments and psychedelic arrangements into his revered signature blues sound. The result was an album that Wolf himself initially disregarded on the now infamous cover, but one that has won a special place amongst dedicated music aficionados thanks to its unique mix of traditional blues and electric rock elements. Get On Down's reputation for high quality reissues continues with The Howlin' Wolf Album, which features a special Stoughton vinyl pressing with audio remastered from the original analog tapes for optimum sound quality and comes packaged in a paste-on style jacket featuring the album's famous original artwork."

WATERS, MUDDY After The Rain LP
2018 repress. "The second of two electric-blues albums released on Chess Records and Cadet Concept imprint in the late '60s, Muddy Waters' After the Rain has achieved cult-like status amongst blues fans in the years since his death in 1983. After taking a backlash from critics with first attempt at adopting psychedelic influences on Electric Mud, Muddy made adjustments for the follow-up, despite keeping a majority of the same session players. This time, he toned down the psychedelic elements and put them in balance with his classic Chicago blues sound, and the results yield some vintage tracks that glow with fuzzy guitars and bass: 'I Am the Blues,' 'Ramblin' Mind,' 'Bottom of the Sea,' and 'Blues Trouble.' After being out of print for years, Get On Down is proud to present this rare classic from Muddy Waters pulled from the original masters and presented on LP with Japanese-style OBI and double-sided poster."

CHAURASIA, HARIPRASAD Ajanma 2CD
2014 release. Hariprasad Chaurasia celebrated his 80th birthday this year; a good moment for Ajanma, this unique solo album by the world legend bansuri master form India. Chaurasia is an Indian virtuoso flautist in the Hindustani tradition, born 1 July 1938 in Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh, India. Ajanma takes a unique place in the discography of the North Indian flute legend. The recording was captured in a small sixteenth-century church in Rhoon, Netherlands in June 2014, which is well-known for the character and quality of its acoustics. This double CD is comprised of two solo improvisations accompanied by a tanpura and a short piece of flute without the usual tanpura drone. The deliberate omission of a percussion accompaniment allows Chaurasia to take his flute on an intimate journey, carrying the listener through the honesty, density of color, and lyrical architecture of the world of sound. Chaurasia's patience and the purity of his musical mind enable him to use his flute to illuminate the landscapes of the listener's imagination, making this recording a truly profound, intimate and meditative communication with the maestro.

VA In Death's Dream Kingdom 4LP
Houndstooth, the artist-led label from London's renowned fabric nightclub and label, delivers a new compilation, In Death's Dream Kingdom. T.S. Eliot published The Hollow Men in 1925, yet his poem feels as relevant as ever, given its apocalyptic overtones and claustrophobic, despondent air. Twenty six artists producing the cream of leftfield electronic music have been given a brief: to take the phrase In Death's Dream Kingdom, or the whole of Eliot's poem as inspiration. The result is a compilation that features original tracks from Lanark Artefax, Pan Daijing, Gazelle Twin, and Fever Ray co-producer Peder Mannerfelt, among others. Vibrating with vivid sonic references, the poem is a feast for the ears, which makes it a ripe subject for musical interpretation. Not an album in the traditional sense, it brings together a seriously diverse array of talents into a coherent whole with a vivid aesthetic reverberating through it. It occupies a similar space to the great home listening electronica acts of the '90s: FSOL, Global Communication, the Artificial Intelligence axis. But there are no throwbacks here; this is radical in sound and thought. Dark music for dark times. Features the apocalyptic artwork of Rotterdam-based artist Jazz Szu-Ying Chen. Cut and mastered by Matt Colton at Alchemy. Also features: Otto Lindholm, Petit Singe, Tomoko Sauvage, Pye Corner Audio, Sophia Loizou, Abul Mogard, Par Grindvik, Koenraad Ecker, Roly Porter, Hodge, Shapednoise, ASC, Batu, We Will Fail, Peter Van Hoesen, Spatial, Yves De Mey, Mindspan, Kangding Ray, ZOV ZOV, Ian William Craig, and Christophe De Babalon.

BLAKEY AND THE JAZZ MESSENGERS, ART Live In Moers 1976 CD
Art Blakey And The Jazz Messengers' Live In Moers 1976 is an original master concert recording from Moers Jazzfestival (Germany) retrospectively released for the first time in 2016. Live In Moers 1976 is a part of the WDR's The Cologne Broadcasts series, executively produced by jazz historian Dr. Bernd Hoffmann. Both formats include musician credits and liner notes by journalist and radio host Karsten Mützelfeldt in English and German. Arthur "Art" Blakey (October 11, 1919-October 16, 1990) was an American jazz drummer and bandleader who made a name for himself in the 1940s in the big bands of Fletcher Henderson and Billy Eckstine. He then worked with bebop musicians Thelonious Monk, Charlie Parker, and Dizzy Gillespie. In the mid-1950s, Horace Silver and Blakey formed the Jazz Messengers, a group that the drummer was associated with for the next 35 years. Blakey was inducted into the Down Beat Jazz Hall of Fame (in 1981), the Grammy Hall of Fame (in 1998 and 2001), and was awarded the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2005. He was inducted into the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame in 1991. The Biographical Encyclopedia of Jazz calls the Jazz Messengers "the archetypal hard bop group of the late '50s". Engineered by Franz-Josef Schwarz and re-mastered by Dirk Franken, vinyl cut by John Cremer. Jewel case with slipcase and additional eight-page booklet.

FEHLMANN, THOMAS 1929 - Das Jahr Babylon LP
LP version; 180 gram vinyl. 1929 - Das Jahr Babylon marks Thomas Fehlmann's third full-length release of 2018 and presents what appears to be a creative peak in a career that spans beyond his solo work to his early days in Palais Schaumburg, collaborating with Moritz von Oswald as 3MB to his long time work with The Orb. Having left The Orb in late 2017 has set free unforeseen energies in Fehlmann's studio. A departure from his recent dance floor-friendly album Los Lagos (KOMP 148CD/KOM 388LP), 1929 - Das Jahr Babylon is a film soundtrack from the documentary that aired on ARD network on September 30, 2018 and is now available as a podcast series. To complement the internationally-lauded TV series Berlin Babylon, German director Volker Heise has created a documentary about 1929, the fateful year during Germany's Weimarer Republik in which Berlin Babylon is set. Heise's stirring documentary portrays Germany's sizzling capital faced with radical changes by the dark forces about to toss the world into the abyss of World War II. This marks the second time that Fehlmann is partnering with Heise after 2010's marathon documentary 24 Stunden Berlin which was released as Gute Luft (KOMP 081CD, KOM 211LP) in the same year. Fehlmann's composition for 1929 consists of sample material taken from the era and thwarts the exaggerated lust for life with threatening undertones that anticipate the dawn of mankind's darkest chapter so far. Although all the sounds breathe yesterday's atmosphere this soundtrack bursts with modernity. Fehlmann accomplished the daring feat to musically render the unsettling resemblance between the political situation 90 years ago and our current time. KOMPAKT feels that Fehlmann's score has turned out spectacularly enough to give it proper release.

ARIWO Ariwo CD
Ariwo are a Cuban/Iranian four-piece focused on the rich intersection between electronic music, Afro-Cuban rhythm and Iranian mysticism. Ariwo, their debut album, is the second release on Manana Records, launched as part of the !K7 Collective and inspired by 2016's groundbreaking Manana Festival in Santiago, Cuba. The band brings together Iranian electronic music composer Pouya Ehsaei and three of London's most influential Cuban musicians: Irakere and Carlos Acosta's Latin Grammy-winning percussion virtuoso, Hammadi Valdes, Yussef Kamaal and Sierra Maestra lead trumpeter Yelfris Valdes, and godfather of London's Cuban scene, Oreste Noda. To the band, the project's goal is to "connect our native musical traditions to electronic music in a way that pushes beyond traditional Cuban and Iranian identity, creating a sound that does not belong to any specific culture." The word "Ariwo" means "noise" in Yoruba, an African religion that came to Cuba during the transatlantic slave trade and heavily influenced the island's musical development. For the three Cuban musicians in particular, Ariwo is about shining a light on the incredible and largely unrecognized cultural heritage that resounds through the barrios of Havana, Matanzas, Guantánamo and Santiago de Cuba. Ariwo features genres like yambú, songo, guaguancó, and changüí, as well as echoes of Havana's legendary conga processions. Ehsaei programs his electronics and processes the instrumentation live, constantly changing the intensity to create a real-time dialog that elevates these rich ancestral traditions. SOUNDSPECIES AND ACHE MEYI Soundspecies And Ache Meyi CD
Manana presents their third release, an album collaboration between the UK's Soundspecies and Ache Meyi, based in Santiago de Cuba, a groundbreaking fusion of Cuban folkloric music and electronics. The project was born in April 2016 in Santiago, in the balmy weeks leading up to Manana Festival and is the culmination of two chaotic weeks of rehearsals at the Casa Del Danzon and two sessions at the legendary Egrem studios. "Ache Meyi" can be translated into "Ache" ("power" or "blessings" in the Yoruba language) and "Meyi" ("double" or "twin" or "twice") and the band have their very own power twins, Hector and Rafael. Hector is the senior, patriarchal figurehead of the group alongside his apprentices Alieke and Rafael. Two female singers, Alina and Maire, complete the line-up. The band's identity is rooted in an interlocking web of Afro-Haitian rhythms like bembe, vodu, gaga, and merengue, absorbing these folkloric traditions from the neighborhoods in which they grew up. Soundspecies are brothers Henry and Olly Keen, a producer/DJ duo from Dorset who explore the connections between the rhythms of traditional folkloric percussive music and the sounds and forms of electronic dance music. Integrating electronics and melodies initially proved hard. "We were struggling to respond to the frenetic, seemingly impenetrable web of rhythmic sounds, and the singers' sense of tonality was quite free, jumping from one key to an unrelated one within songs," recalls Olly. However, at the legendary Siboney Egrem Studios in Santiago, they began separating the instruments, breaking the music down into textures and patterns and trying new directions with the sound. At a later session, Ache Meyi then jammed with kick and snare sounds on the MPC, playing to bembe rhythms recorded during the first session. Olly continues, "With a virtuoso like Hector, who has dedicated his whole life to his art, it could have been a challenge for us to suggest respectfully that he does it differently but he was the most open-hearted, patient and positive man. The show at the Manana festival was a euphoric experience for us. We wanted the album to capture and distil some of the energy from that night." RIYL: Carl Craig, Fourtet, Ondatropica.

Lyra is DeWalta's fourth large solo project and third full-length solo album following Wander in 2012, llumination in 2014, and Dark Matter in 2017. The album consists of two individually available parts: a double LP (Lyra) with six tracks, as well as a single LP (Lyra Pi (MEANDER 026LP, 2018)) with five synth and ambient works. The ambient part launches a new Meander series, a departure from Meander's well-known dance floor releases. Lyra is by far DeWalta's most extensive and refined project to date. With 11 exclusive songs, a total running time of over 100 minutes (plus a collaboration with long-time friend and Meander co-owner Fabian Geimer-Lorusso aka Jupiter), it marks a new beginning of ambient and score-like modern electronic music works as well as the continuation of his inspired intellectual-emotional approach to dance music. Lyra is a constellation in the northern hemisphere which is highest in the midnight sky in the early summer months. It contains one of the brightest stars in the sky -- Vega. Many of the songs on this album were produced in these warm and gentle months during an inspirational creative time in Portugal. In Greek mythology, Lyra represents the lyre of Orpheus, Apollo's son. Made by Hermes from a tortoise-shell, it was given to Apollo who then passed it along to Orpheus; it is said to be the first music instrument ever made.

While other albums -- Rikki Ililonga's Zambia, Witch's Lazy Bones!! -- are competitors, it's hard to best this album as it covers each major quadrant of the Zamrock whole: it came from the mines; its musicians were anti-colonial freedom fighters, it envelops Zambian folk music traditions, and it rocks -- hard. Amanaz were serious, and they made a serious stab at an album. They titled their album Africa, according to original band member Keith Kabwe, 'because of how it was shared and how its inhabitants were butchered and enslaved, its resources stolen... all the atrocities slave drivers committed. ' Thus, their 'Kale,' a blues sung in Nyanja, that traced the continent's arc from slavery to Zambia's independence closes the album. Kabwe and rhythm guitarist John Kanyepa have a winsome softness to their vocals, which sit politely aside the feral growl of drummer Watson Baldwin Lungu, bassist Jerry Mausala and bandleader/lead guitarist Isaac Mpofu. Africa's vibe ranges from anxious ('Amanaz') to escapist ('Easy Street') to straight-up pissed-off. On the 'History of Man,' his voice whiskey-burned, his distorted guitar buzzing like swarming hornets, Mpofu indicts his species. There's a darkness to Africa not found on any other Zamrock records, and a melancholy drifts throughout, specifically on Mpofu's more restrained 'Khala My Friend,' which stands as an effective, bleak situation for the Zambian everyman, the average citizen of a struggling, new nation, who might have had relatives in conflict-torn countries on the horizon, who might have been struggling to find his next meal, who might have seen a bleaker future than his president promised. Then there's the clear Velvet Underground-influence on the nostalgic 'Sunday Morning,' which, as Kabwe recalls, was the first song written for the album, back in 1968, when Velvet Undergound and Nico was a new release -- and the underground funk of 'Making the Scene.' The album also tackles traditional Zambian music and early-'60s rock -- punctuated, of course by Kanyepa's wah-wah and Mpofu's fuzz guitars. But every time Amanaz get too deep, too violent, they come back with an accessible song and woo their listener back to the groove. 'Green Apple' is a civil song, featuring Kanyepa's sighing guitar. It is a perfectly arranged album, from the dichotomy of Mpofu's and Kanyepa's lead and rhythm guitars, to the vocal harmonies, to the rhythm section's sense of space and time, which allows Africa's funk to build. Inexplicably, Africa was given two separate mixes and two separate presses: one version is dry, with the vocals and drums mixed loud, the other slathered in reverb, with the vocals and drums disappearing into the mix, and with the guitar solos mixed much louder. We've presented them both here as they each have their appeal: it's up to the listener to pick the one he or she prefers. This is a highpoint of the Zamrock scene and we hope that this can be seen as its definitive reissue."

VA Dutch Wave: A History Of Minimal Synth & Wave In The Netherlands LP
Repressed. The first chapter of Onderstroom digging into the history of Dutch minimal synth and wave. Who needs a big, expensive recording studio with all those fancy high-tech machines that only make your weary head spin when you can do it all by yourself at home in your (teenage) bedroom? Way back in the early eighties all you really needed was an idea, quite a bit of guts and some rudimentary equipment. You could basically do whatever you wanted. The means were limited, yet the sky was unbounded. It was the time of the Cold War nuclear threat, social unrest and mass unemployment but at the same time it was an era of infinite possibilities. The future was just around the corner. A lot of music that was being produced sounded just like that: a brave new world of sound and rhythm. Music was simply put on cheap cassettes, easily duplicated, and swiftly distributed in limited quantities into the big world outside. Tracks recorded in Amsterdam, Arnhem of Heiloo ended up in unimaginable destinations such as Brisbane or Buenos Aires. Prolific international underground scenes were informed of this new wave of Dutch electronic artists by means of word of mouth, fanzines, devoted underground tape traders, and sometimes that tiny bit of luck. As their predecessors of the (in)famous Dutch East-India Company (now cult) acts such as The Actor, Ende Shneafliet, Das Ding, Störung, S.M. Nurse, Nine Circles, Beatnik Love Affair, and Van Kaye + Ignit all explored their own paths. Some went straight into oblivion, others had a brief taste of modest upper-ground success. Mind: the names presented here are but the proverbial tip of the iceberg. Some of these early tapes became much sought-after collectors' items; others gathered dust. The rest, well, is history. Now, decades upon decades later, Onderstroom digs again in history and surfaces with a selection of tracks that illustrate the rich past of electronic Holland. Call it minimal wave, synth-pop, or experimental electronics. Onderstroom call it the real Dutch treat. Features Nine Circles, Beatnik Love Affair, The Actor, Störung, Van Kaye + Ignit, S.M. Nurse, Ende Shneafliet, and Das Ding. Comes in a gatefold sleeve with metallic finishing; 180 gram vinyl.

MICE, LIA The Sampler As Time Machine LP
Optimo Music releases The Sampler As Time Machine, the new album from Lia Mice, Australian-born but UK-residing DJ, producer and instrument designer. Mice on the album: "When I moved to London in 2015, many things changed at once (I started going to more techno and electro nights, I changed my live-set setup, and I had access to a fully-equipped recording studio through my music masters program. At the same time I was reading a lot of books on time travel, not just science fiction but also psychology and neuroscience (like how the human brain perceives time from moment to moment, how we can experience overlapping time, and how we interact with our past and future through memory and imagination. The Sampler As A Time Machine is the result of all these new influences coming together. The tracks were developed out of ongoing studio experiments interpreting these different ideas of time travel by using samplers and tape to re-sample and manipulate original music performed by me on various instruments including my voice."

ANDO, UMEKO Ihunke Remixes 12"
Following Pingipung's reissue of Umeko Ando's Ihunke, the label invited an eclectic bunch of producers to remix Umeko Ando's Ainu folklore songs. Folktronica wizard Nicolá Cruz replaces Umeko's voice with a traditional flute and infuses "Battaki" with driving, percussive spirits. Gama and RLHBSLCN focus on the psychedelic tremors in Umeko Ando's brittle voice in "Iyomante Upopo" and "Atuy So Kata". Andi Otto captures a funky acid-bass energy in "Iyomante Upopo". M.RUX's take on "Herutun Rutun" is definitely another masterpiece in his oeuvre. El Búho takes the "Battaki" Tonkori, a Japanese hand-held harp, and creates a type of slow house.

MERZBOW MONOAkuma CD
"I think the first time I heard Merzbow must have been 1994. I remember not really knowing what to make of it. It was effortlessly deep and aggressive, but also emotive and lyrical in the way the waves of sound would erupt and decay. It wasn't easy then to discover information about artists, but within a few months I had learned as much as I could. In the mid 2000s, I had the chance to meet Masami Akita, aka Merzbow and present him live when I was co-producing the What Is Music? Festival. It was a pretty special event; the first (sonic) meeting of Merzbow and Keiji Haino took place here in Brisbane. Merzbow's solo performance was as transformative an experience as hearing his music for the first time. MONOAkuma is a live recording made in Brisbane in 2012; this was the second time I had the pleasure to present him live in Australia. To me, this performance epitomizes the physiology of Merzbow's sound work. He creates in absolutes; sonically he generates a tidal wave of frequency that sweeps across the spectra with tireless frenzy. Merzbow's capacity to conjure a massive swirling mesh of analog and digital sources is without comparison; his work is one of intensity, a seething, psychedelic and utterly visceral noise-ocean. What MONOAkuma represents is a resolution of Merzbow's work across both analog and digital noise mediums. Here, he brings together his formidable pulsing analog noise and his more recent digital approach. On MONOAkuma, he resolves these modes of operation into an ontology of noise in the absolute. There is no question - this is about the body and the ears being overwhelmed. In those moments of being wholly consumed comes an incredible bodily sense of euphoria that is a truly unique and profound experience. MONOAkuma which epitomizes Merzbow's 40 years as the most important noise musician of our time, demonstrating the intense and complex audio world he's created. It's the perfect starting point from which to wade into the noise ocean that is Merzbow's vast output." --Lawrence English. All proceeds from MONOAkuma will be used to fund research and preservation attempts for the Tasmanian Devil; which in recent years has suffered greatly due to effects of a transmissible facial cancer.

GRISWOLD, ERIK Yokohama Flowers CD
Room40 stalwart Erik Griswold returns with Yokohama Flowers, his latest collection of works for prepared piano. For over two decades, Griswold has been crafting a particular and utterly personal language around his instrument of choice. His preparations, which are in a state of perpetual refinement, are like a kind of lens; it is through them that a certain audio reading of his instrument is made possible. It's understandable, then, that Griswold would be inspired by the work of Australian experimental film maker Louise Curham. Like Griswold, she too reveals a very personal reading of her surroundings through a range of preparations and expanded techniques. Discovering her work through a series of collaborations hosted by Room40, Other Film and other groups, the pair slowly developed a strong approach to joint performance. In many ways, these recorded works reflect upon those performances. Similar to her filmic works, which maintain an unfamiliar, yet tangible beauty; Griswold's compositions remind us that the piano is never truly knowable, or known. Each composition collected here reveals another detail or way of knowing the piano. The preparations release something in excess of the instrument itself. It's in these extensions, these ruptures of familiarity, that the language of the piano is born and reborn. It is a state of perpetual discovery and resolution, framed in composition. Griswold on the music: "There's a mystical aura surrounding my old piano. I imagine the 19th century workshop in which it was hand-crafted and the German parlors in which it played Bach, Beethoven, Debussy, Satie, or Joplin. I imagine its journey from Stuttgart, by ship to Sydney harbor, and overland to the semi-tropical heat of Brisbane. Playing it I feel connected to its 131 years of history -- the people, places and music that have come before. The beautiful, hand-treated Super 8 films of Louise Curham are a perfect visual counterpoint to my music. In her Yokohama Flowers (2018), a sense of fragility, intimacy and nostalgia emerges from the superposition of location footage with delicately hand-drawn and painted layers. Her method closely mirrors my own, which combines tactile exploration at the piano keyboard with layering of foreign materials (preparations) onto the strings. By altering and repurposing old technologies in this way, it is as if we are squeezing the last drops of nectar out of these fading flowers."

MARCHETTI & CAT HOPE, LIONEL The Last Days Of Reality CD
Room40 release The Last Days Of Reality, featuring Decibel performing the works of Lionel Marchetti and Cat Hope. "I first met Lionel Marchetti in Australia in 2010. Decibel were touring our Alvin Lucier program, and Lionel was on the same bill performing a live performance set manipulating electro-acoustic materials with dancer Yoko Higashi. I was so taken with Lionel's performances that I asked him if he would write a piece for Decibel. I didn't realize that he hadn't done something like this before. The first work was Première Étude (Les Ombres), communicated as a text score, and premiered in 2012. I was asked by Lionel to make some recordings of ocarinas, harmonicas, and folk instruments; I sent these to him to be featured in the live performance. For this piece, the part comes from speakers beside each performer, and a bass amplifier beneath the piano. Like his own performances I had seen the year before, the work was naturally performative, with unique speaker and performer configurations. It was a remarkable combination of electronic, spatial, acoustic and textural music. The performers use the partition Concrète as a score. I visited Lionel in Lyon in 2014, recording flute improvisations in his studio. He used these as a basis for Une Série De Reflets, again communicating via text instructions and each performer having their own dedicated speaker to interact with. Pour Un Enfant Qui Dort again requested flute sounds that were time part of the live performance as well as the partition Concrète. The next work saw a more 'compositional' collaboration; The Earth Defeats Me began as a graphically scored work written by me and recorded by Decibel. That recording was used to make the partition Concrète which is now an embedded as part of the score. These works exist as live performances, but also as singular Concrète works, without the instruments. Working with Lionel has been remarkable; he has a singular way of thinking about sound and its relationship to works and images. These pieces enable the acoustic instruments to be part of that, extending the ideas in the partition Concrète, using them structurally and texturally, as well as being part of them. It is music that concerns itself with the incredible power of sound, but from the most delicate and dream-like perspective." --Cat Hope.

BEDNARCZYK, TOMASZ Illustrations For Those Who CD
Polish producer Tomasz Bednarczyk returns to Room40 with Illustrations For Those Who, his first full length edition in almost a decade. Across the late 2000s, Bednarczyk created a series of acclaimed ambient recordings that married the unsteadiness of archival technologies with an extensive palette of pastoral timbres. These recordings quietly set a particular tenor of work for a new generation of Middle Eastern European ambient composers. Following these recordings, however, Bednarczyk's energies were re-directed with his time being split between a multiple of more techno-oriented electronic music outings. In early 2018, following the success of his New Rome project (RM 478CD) released in 2016, Bednarczyk began exploring a new approach to his more atmospheric works. Using an incredibly reductive set-up, he took single sources and exploded their potentials. Through a process of layering and synthesis, he was able to create incredibly minimal, yet dense sound textures from very singular materials. Within a matter of weeks he had devised a new way of approaching his more ambient compositional interests. Illustrations For Those Who is the result of this first investigation. Each piece is singular in nature, in that its source is one synthesizer or instrument. The resulting pieces though are anything but singular. Rather, each of them maintains a detailed and rich sensibility built around complex cycling of sonic materials. This edition marks out an important new direction for Bednarczyk and firmly asserts him as a continued force for ambient music emanating out of Eastern Europe.Tomasz Bednarczyk (b.1986) is a musician living in Wroclaw, Poland. Since 2004 he has been writing compositions that present new, melodic sensibilities through a mess of fragile, disintegrating sounds. He work has been called melancholic and offers glimpses into his surroundings and beyond.

SUZUKI & AKI ONDA, AKIO Ke I Te Ki CD
Room40 release Akio Suzuki and Aki Onda's Ke I Te Ki. "Akio Suzuki and I have been performing together frequently for the last five years; we have a tendency to perceive sound as space, or to always consider sound in relation to space. We don't usually hear sound sources as they actually are, since they are always modified by a space's acoustics and its reflections, absorptions, and attenuation. Sound is affected by the conditions and characteristics of a particular setting. We respond to the extra acoustics of these phenomena. Our ears have to be wide open, constantly adjusting to ever-changing detail. In performance, we opt for opens space where the audience can surround us or position themselves throughout the space. We also like tailoring site-specific performances to unusual locations, creating a dialogue between us and the environment. Ke I Te Ki was recorded in New York City in 2015 at The Emily Harvey Foundation - a SoHo loft-style art space that was once the studio of Fluxus founder George Maciunas. It is a historic building of New York avant-garde culture, and the last of the artist co-ops that Maciunas created in New York City. We had one day of preparation for the multi-track recording, performing for two nights surrounded by a limited but packed audience. The loft is itself quite constrained, and Akio and I needed a significant portion of the floor to place our gear and roam around. Microphones were everywhere, since our sounds diffused across the space. My role was to set an assortment of "scenes" with field recordings, sustained drones generated by an industrial electric fan, and electronic tones and pulses from radios, et cetera. Akio then built upon these with layers of melodies and rhythmic patterns, while we both engaged in fabricating distinctive texture and timbre. Akio kept changing his instruments, bringing surprises and sudden changes, creating contrast and powerful tension. Ke I Te Ki in Japanese means the sound of an alarm, or a whistle to call attention to a hazardous event. We hoped to develop our style by adopting a set of self-imposed rules related to the multi-directional soundscape, acoustical response to the space, and implementation of visual elements. Akio suggested the name Ke I Te Ki as a reminder to push ourselves further. It was a lesson for us in questioning 'norms' and exploring other possibilities." --Aki Onda.

BEECROFT, ANTONIO S. Afraid of Modern Living: World Imitation & Monitor, 1977-1982 Book
Available now is the authorized history of the obscure and influential Los Angeles art and music collective World Imitation Productions (WImP). Emerging as creators of collaged and photocopied mail art and publications in the late 1970s, World Imitation is perhaps best known in its musical incarnation, the band Monitor, which was active between 1978 and 1982, with live performances as well as two self-produced 7" singles and one LP. (The LP was reissued by Superior Viaduct in 2013.) Afraid of Modern Living: World Imitation & Monitor, 1977-1982, authored by WImP scholar Antonio S. Beecroft, accompanied a successful eponymous exhibition mounted at These Days in downtown Los Angeles in 2017. The initial edition of 100 pocketbook catalogs sold out on opening night. This expanded and enlarged edition draws from an archive of materials that hold up a funhouse mirror to Southern California culture, consumer dystopia, and the late 1970s punk movement. Rarely seen handmade publications, paintings, sculpture, video, and vintage flyers are featured, along with World Imitation source materials and formative works. The author places World Imitation firmly in its time and place. Growing up in the paranoia and false optimism of mid-century suburban Southern California, the collective explored topics as disparate as exotica, psychedelia, pranks, UFOs, the paranormal, revolutionary politics, and Disneyland as subjects of anthropological research. The resulting mélange, as expressed in their singular sound, images, and various "happenings," was informed by an oddly engaging aesthetic of random and recycled artifice that resonates even today, in the future they deconstructed fifty years ago. Full-color, 158-page softcover book; 6.25" x 10" portrait. Edition of 500. Packed with photos and images of artworks, paintings, sculptures, installations, and assorted ephemera, including flyers for shows Monitor performed with the Bags, Human Hands, Germs, Phranc, Johanna Went, 45 Grave, The Fall, Cabaret Voltaire, Lydia Lunch, Bpeople, Suicide, and others.

ANGIULI, GIORGIA In A Pink Bubble LP
LP version. Giorgia Angiuli's debut album In A Pink Bubble channels the artist's effervescent persona and own bubbly style in a 12 track-long, honest musical expression. Drawing inspiration from her first worldwide tour, where life on the road was impacted by personal loss, the album title In A Pink Bubble captures the essence of the artist's mindset, caught between the artistic world and real life: "I felt like in a pink bubble, between memories and new experiences, between darkness and colors". Brandishing an immersive sonic sphere, the classically-trained musician played and recorded all instruments throughout the album, including her favorite weapons of choice, from her beloved '60s guitar to vintage analog synths like the Moog Sub37, Juno 106, the infamous O-B-6 synth and more. The synesthesia of dark and colorful with new and old memories stands at the core of the album, as introspective airy tracks intertwine with more dynamic, bass-heavy constructions. On its luminous side, one sees cuts radiating with crystalline, microscoping sounds with sweeping ambience like the opener "A Perfect Day In Tulum", leading the listener on a nervous path towards more obscure tracks such as "Copenhagen" and "Nothing To Lose", until bringing the atmosphere to a boiling point. "Music Is Life" encapsulates Giorgia's passion for her craft, an intrinsic part of her life that brings peace and inspiration; "Music is life with wings, sit in the warm water, just reflecting, being". Creation and being inspired represent another major theme present throughout the album, both on "Inspiration", and "A Temple Made By Air", where the artist can be heard singing: "Passion means satisfaction, wrong emotions create distortion, come with me to enjoy the green, stop losing time on your screen". Channeling an overflow of emotions, a return to humanity comes as a resolution for the artist, the central idea in "The Contact Is A Cure". Giorgia feels that, although useful, "technology is the big nightmare of our society, and we are all missing the contact with nature and human beings". Rounding off the last part of the release, the sun-drenched "Pink Bubble" stands as reflective and intense, managing to transfuse the same magnetism that is quintessential to Giorgia's live performances. With In A Pink Bubble, Angiuli refines her signature sound across a range of tempos, in a project that can be appreciated both for its intricate groundings and beautiful simplicity.

CAGE, JOHN Early Electronic and Tape Music LP
2018 repress; LP version; black vinyl. "I believe the use of noise to make music will continue and increase until we reach a music produced through the aid of electrical instruments which will make available for musical purposes any and all sounds that can be heard." --John Cage, 1937."Although John Cage occasionally worked in large, sophisticated studios -- for example, when he composed 'Fontana Mix' in 1958 -- his approach to electronic and tape music was often uncomplicated, makeshift, and pragmatic, employing simple tabletop devices: tape machines, phonograph cartridges, contact microphones, record players, portable radios, etc. He developed a soundworld that was utterly new, radical and demanding. It heralded the age of the loudspeaker, mass communication and Marshall McLuhan's 'global village.' The hiss, crackle and hum of electronic circuits, and the disembodied sounds, snatched by radio from the ether, spoke of the 20th century. Langham Research Centre works within the tradition firmly established by Cage, using resources that would have been available to him. For the realization of Cartridge Music, moving iron phonograph pickups were sourced and restored. These have a knurled screw designed to hold a steel phonograph needle and, in the piece, other objects are inserted and amplified: pieces of wire, toothpicks, paperclips, etc. The realization of 'Fontana Mix' includes the individual mono tracks from Cage's original tapes created in 1958. These are played using open-reel tape machines. These practices ensure we work within the limitations that Cage experienced and enable us to get close to the soundworld he inhabited." --Robert Worby, Langham Research Centre

2018 repress; LP version. Features four selections from the double-CD version, Indonesian Electronic Music 1979-92. Fascinating and unreleased before music by Otto Sidharta, pioneer of Indonesian electronic music. Electronic compositions that integrated natural sounds and urban sounds to this extent were extremely rare at the time they were recorded, which in turn gives them a unique form of intensity. This collection is released as an entry in Sub Rosa's Early Electronic series.Otto Sidharta was born in Bandung, Indonesia November 6, 1955. In 1978 he studied music composition in Jakarta Institute of Arts under guidance of Slamet Abdul Sjukur. In 1984 he continued his post graduate study in composition and electronic music with Professor Ton de Leeuw in Sweelinck Conservatorium Amsterdam. In 2015 he started his doctoral study at Institute Seni Indonesia Surakarta, finishing in 2016. Sidharta's interest in using environmental sounds and synthetics sounds to express his musical ideas developed when he was a student at the Jakarta Institute of Arts. He performed his first electronic music piece, "Kemelut", based on water sounds in the First Indonesian Young Composer Festival (Pekan Komponis Muda) in 1979. In 1979 he begin to collect some nature and animal sounds on Nias Island, Borneo (Kalimantan) jungle, Riau islands, and other remote places. These sounds were used as material for some of his works such as "Ngendau", "Hutan Plastik", and "East Wind". Otto Sidharta is still alive and performing around the world.

CHAUVEAU, SYLVAIN Pianisme LP
Sylvain Chauveau on Pianisme: "Piano always had a central role in my discography and this selection of short pieces showcases what might be my musical signature: quietness, slow pace, long resonances, a close as possible to silence. Music to be played at night."Pianisme is a collection of unreleased and out-of-print piano works composed and recorded since 2004. Most of them are part of soundtracks for feature films by French director Sébastien Betbeder (from 2007's Nuage and the very rare short film Nu Devant Un Fantôme, whose music was completely unpublished until now). Also released for the first time: "In The Twilight Of Paris" (written the day after Luc Ferrari's death, as a quiet homage to a composer whose works have often been part of the Sub Rosa catalog) and "Soñando", straight repetition and variations on a minimal pattern, created for choreographer Christian Rizzo's 2010 show L'Oubli, toucher du bois. Performers include Sylvain Chauveau, Pierre-Yves Macé, Olivier Lageyre, and Rasim Biyikli.

NEMESCU, OCTAVIAN Gradeatia - Natural 1973-83 LP
Sub Rosa present Octavian Nemescu's Gradeatia - Natural 1973-83. Nemescu was born in Pascani, Romania in 1940. He studied composition with Mihail Jora at University of Music in Bucharest. While still a student, he imposed himself as part of avant-garde movement in Romanian music composition. After 1965 he produced works of the "open creation" type, a blending of conceptual and environmental music. He involved himself after 1967 in the Romanian spectral trend. Starting with the work Concentric (1969), his creation received archetypal vocation by cultivating an aesthetic of the essential. Octavian Nemescu cultivated the archetypal goals on all parameters and musical forms. He is the author of Implosive Music and of Imaginary Music. He composed Multi-, Post-, Non- and Pre-Symphonies. Later, he became interested in music with initiation character, developed in a non-spectacular, ritualistic atmosphere, as a chance to reinvigorate the old mysteries and as a modality of awakening from biological, mental and spiritual sleep. Gradeatia was composed in 1982, commissioned by the Electroacoustic Music Studio in Gent (Belgium), where it was elaborated. It was conceived as ambient music for Voronet Monastery in Moldavia, as an electronic-audio fresco paralleling the existing one, embracing the idea of mural-visual consistency. It happened in a historic moment when the communist regime in Romania demolished many churches, and was conceived as a protest to these actions. Natural was composed in 1973, in its first version, and again in 1983, in a final version. This music has a spectral aesthetic orientation and at the same time, process-based and archetypal orientations.

SPECIMENS In The Dust Of Idols LP
Specimens' In The Dust Of Idols is an album exploring mortality, existentialism and the dread one can feel in the face of an apparently meaningless world. The journey one embarks on when trying to create meaning where there is perhaps none. These initial senses of dread can be brought about by the insignificance one feels in the face of greatness, where others have seemingly found meaning and purpose in the face of your own wavering path. Whilst these moments in time may hold no specific meaning, despite their impressive nature, one can be driven into senseless awe. In The Dust Of Idols ties in this sense of wonderment coupled with the overarching dread of contemplating one's own existence, to quote Ruth Tallman, "The search for answers in an answerless world". "I wanted to create something dense and heavy. When you listen through, it makes you feel like it has the weight of time stitched into it," explains Alex Ives, the man behind Specimens. As well as expanding the range of instrumentation used on In The Dust Of Idols, his second album, Ives also enlisted the talents of cellist Charlote de Burgh-Holder and experimentalist Joe Summers on the tracks "The Unread Library" and "Twisted Necks" which adds to the dynamic depth and range on this record. It's not all dark, though; moments of optimism and cracks of light pepper the record giving enough hope to the listener to pursue questioning the unanswerable. Accompanying the release of the record is a short film set to music from the album, produced and shot by photographer and director Lucie Rox. The film is a visual expression and representation of identity and the many ways this is challenged, perceived and adopted. Whilst taking forward the concepts explored throughout the album, the film looks to reduce the great vastness of confusion and self-doubt put forward on the record and focusing instead on a more intimate and personal perspective laid bare and shared by both Rox and Specimens, with a heavy focus on race and heritage. Both Specimens and Rox are mixed -- Caribbean and British/African and French respectively; the objective of the film is to show one of the many angles where an individual's search for meaning and identity can be expressed. Artwork from Australian painter Kieran Ingram and mastered by Lawrence English. Edition of 300 on white/blue splatter vinyl.

ROMBOY & PETAR DUNDOV, MARC Dimension D EP 12"
Zagreb-based Petar Dundov and Marc Romboy team up again and release their definition of what they call techno. "Dimension D" is a stunning hybrid of both's sound signatures, with rough and addictive beats accompanied by their distinctive way of programming hooky arpeggios. "Meteor Shower" was produced after a dream Petar had after the first production day in Marc's studio. Inspired by the pictures which remained in his brain they switched on a Minimoog, Buchla Music Easel, and a Juno 106 and started to make a trip into sounds which could be a soundtrack of such a bloodcurdling scenario.

ANTIGONE Rising CD
Continuing on from a series of successful EPs on Token including Ostinato (TOKEN 075EP, 2017), Antigone returns to the label with Rising, his first experiment with the LP format. Rising is an album that exerts itself to stimulate the mind and the body simultaneously. As such, it's a record that gives the dramatic illusion of having a physical pulse. The artist, real name Antonin Jeanson, already has a substantial body of work behind him. Considering his previous releases on Token, Indigo Aera, Concrete Music and Taapion, and his experience as a resident at Concrete in Paris, the level of artistic maturity he possesses while still being under 30 is highly impressive yet unsurprising at the same time. For Rising, Antigone manages to oscillate between great ambient introspections carried by spacey synths and deconstructed rhythms, and elegant techno epics that are suitable for listening pleasure as much as for the pure abandonment of reality. The title track's delicate arpeggios meld into strings with stirring cadences, delivering above and beyond the standard intro, as it breaks and continues for a second round with added depth. "Sands Of Time" stands out with tiny, breathy samples, pitch bent into something ever different from the last. "Lost And Found"'s granulated percussion sits adjacent to a cinematic sea of strings, while "Out There" provides a tasteful fragment of the sci-fi reverence many listeners demand of a techno album. "Duality Of Mind" hints once again at the measured moods of Cantor Dust (TOKEN 053EP, 2015), his Token debut EP. "It Follows" alludes to supernatural horror with call-and-response variants on an almost microtonal theme. "Infinite Limit"'s tension from the offset brings a UK-influenced sound to the record, which continues with the IDM-feeling "Dume" and the equally glitchy and pulsing "Love Field", while the in-between "Irreversible" is an immersive piece with a piercing high-end, guaranteed to induce a physical sensory response.

MAZZARIELLO, JULIAN OLIVER Debut CD
How many albums do you have of Julian Oliver Mazzariello? Think about it. It'll probably be difficult for you to answer. Perhaps you won't be able to recall the precise number, but there's definitely at least one in your music collection. What's more, that elegant touch of his on the piano is unmistakable -- instantly recognizable by merely listening to the first few notes, not to mention his remarkable Anglo-Neapolitan name. But the truth is: no, you haven't got any of Julian's albums. That's because, although Julian lent his art to many musicians, colleagues of his, but he remained undecided on whether to step into the role of band leader. Julian has teamed up for outstanding duo albums with Fabrizio Bosso (with whom he shared several musical experiences), with Enzo Pietropaoli's Yatra and played with Lucio Dalla, Stefano Di Battista, Maria Pia de Vito, Edoardo De Crescenzo, and Fabio Concato, but Dèbut is his first solo performance. So, finally we have the chance and opportunity to listen to Mazzariello in all his creative flair and compositional dynamism: groove, swing, refined technique; along a path of differing styles which he approaches with heightened awareness. Whether they be ballads ("Monk in Paris", "J's Ballad") or groovier songs ("Funky Chunks") or soft blues ("Modal Blues"), the pianist masterfully guides the exceptional trio, formed by André Ceccarelli on drums and Rémy Vignolo on double bass. Seven original compositions and two standards of the song: "Accarezzame" by Pino Calvi (already interpreted by Roberto Murolo, Peppino Di Capri, Renzo Arbore, and many others) and "Que Reste-Til De Nos Amours?", Charles Trenet's masterpiece, make up this brilliant album. Now you have one less ambiguity and one more valuable album. Enjoy!

VISITORS, THE The Deniz Tek Collection Vol. 1 LP
"Wild Honey Records is proud to present a new series of releases, following the career of rock'n'roll icon Deniz Tek post Radio Birdman. With this collection, we will reissue (sometimes for the first time in vinyl!) all his solo and band material post '78, with new material, liner notes, and graphics and bonus tracks. We begin with the long-awaited reissue on vinyl of the legendary Visitors LP. From 1978 to 1979 The Visitors were Deniz Tek on guitar, Mark Sisto on vocals, Ron Keeley on drums, Pip Hoyle on keyboards and Steve Harris on bass. Their style was a dark mixture. The band being 3/5ths Birdman, including the chief songwriter, was essentially what the next phase of Radio Birdman would have been, had the band continued on. At the same time, the sound of the band was more like the early Birdman days with the single guitar and keyboard format. The music was hard and heavy, while maintaining a melodic sense unusual in those immediate post-punk days. The Visitors recorded a session's worth of demos at the 8-track Palm Studio in Sydney, essentially playing their entire set live in the studio direct to tape. From this source tape, recorded in one day with minimal overdubs, came a 12 inch vinyl ep, a full length LP, now impossible to find. Now it's finally time for a much needed reissue, complete with the bonus track 'Skimp the Pimp'."

VA Japanese Traditional Music: Songs of People at Work and Play - Kokusai Bunka Shinkokai 1941 CD
Restocked. The fifth and final volume of World Arbiter's Japanese Traditional Music marks the completion of the label's excavation and restoration of 60 10" 78RPM discs of Japanese traditional music, bringing a great body of lost music to light and offering in full a legacy that has been almost entirely unavailable until now, even in Japan. The original set was manufactured in 1941 by a company now called the Japan Foundation, and was intended to be presented exclusively to libraries (though the Japan Foundation now has no record of having produced it). There are only two known sets of these discs, both missing the same final 10". World Arbiter acquired one original set of 59 from Beate Sirota Gordon (daughter of pianist Leo Sirota) in the 1990s, and, after a ten-year search, finally located a test pressing of the 60th disc in a theater museum in Japan. Upon first hearing these recordings, World Arbiter's Allan Evans was shocked to hear that the discs contained every species of traditional music, from the court's origins in shamanic rites, Buddhist chant, Noh plays, kabuki, and blind biwa players' haunting songs of chilling epics, to the recordings presented here: a final volume full of folk songs that captures rice planters, weavers, tuna and herring fishers, and children, all funkier than one could imagine and with the presence of eternity in their every sound and breath. The sounds and intensity of Volume Five's folk music surpass anything heard in the classical music of Japan. With Japan's ongoing modernization and loss of its traditional music, World Arbiter's audio restoration removes artifacts from chronological chains to resonate in the eternal flow of sound that defies time and space, remaining vital and always in the present. Includes 24 tracks of performances by anonymous Japanese singers.
