TELESCOPES, THE Early Studio Recordings LP
At last, The Telescopes's first four EPs are compiled as Early Studio Recordings, a reissue of their studio recordings from 1989 to 1990. Not only that, but they have been remastered to achieve the deserved sound of this legendary British band leading the late '80s and early '90s shoe-gaze and melodic noise scene alongside the likes of The Jesus And Mary Chain. The Telescopes, with their leader Stephen Lawrie, recorded these EPs in the same period as their first album, Taste (1989).The band's sound is tons of guitar noise and distortion covering beautiful melodies; this music is an absolute must in order to understand all indie and underground music coming from the U.K. and worldwide afterwards.

FU MANCHU We Must Obey LP
2019 repress. Beat Generation present a reissue of Fu Manchu's 10th studio album, We Must Obey, originally released in 2007. Fu Manchu were formed in California in 1987. Their debut was a 7" flexi disc released by the mighty San Francisco´s label Slap A Ham, a total gem in their gender. Their sound was based in their '70s heroes as Black Sabbath, Blue Oyster Cult and so on but also in their contemporary bands as Black Flag, Descendents and Flippers. We Must Obey is an album where the band came back to their roots with a wall of heavy guitars sound and with monumental songs as "Land of Giants" or the final track "Sensei vs. Sensei". This release helped the band to enter the stoner throne together with Queens of the Stone Age or Hermano, two headline bands at the moment, into the hard stoner rock scene. EASTMAN, JULIUS Crazy N*gger LP
It's little wonder that Julius Eastman (who died in 1990 under unexplained circumstances), remained the supreme underground composer. He was Afro-American and gay, a composer who rocked the cerebral world of process music with his explosions of free improvisation. Crazy N*gger is the first time any of Eastman's music has been available on vinyl, and is one of three extended pieces for four pianos, along with Gay Guerrilla and Evil N*gger, written and performed around 1980. All three works generate their epic soundscapes through adamantly restated patterns and interlocking canons, not fragmenting, but preaching urgent truths. To quote the brilliant Mary Jane Leach liners: "He wrote what can be categorized as minimal music, but also wrote 'post-minimal' music -- before minimal music was fully established." His pieces straddle both styles of minimal music; rhythmic/pulse-driven music (Steve Reich and Philip Glass) and spectral drone music (La Monte Young and Phill Niblock). There is a flexibility that lends an organic feel to his music, a muscularity missing in a lot of other music from that time; with the re-emergence of this powerful music, a missing gap in the history of contemporary music has been filled. Not released commercially upon their recording, they were instead shared on cassettes, copied and passed from one admirer to another. Unlike today's instant access to music, at that time each new copy represented a time commitment, since it took as long to copy as its playing time, while also removing itself further from the original recording with a resultant deterioration in sound quality. The three pieces occupy a high point in Eastman's oeuvre, the culmination of his mature style. Crazy N*gger is a sprawling sonic study, the last section exploring canonic form both harmonically and rhythmically, using the same process as James Tenney's Spectral Canon, but notated in a more intuitive way. Offering extensive liner notes by Leach and Bradford Bailey, this is a seminal work by one of the most important, but neglected, American composers of the 1970s and '80s, returning to the light once more. Not only is Crazy N*gger an entire rethinking of minimalism, but it ferociously blows the doors of what classical music can be seen to be. Mastering by Giuseppe Ielasi. Includes printed inner sleeve housing a Nagaoka anti-static record sleeve, plus obi-style original insert in a fold-out outer sleeve. 180 gram, color vinyl; Edition of 300

EASTMAN, JULIUS Evil N*gger/Gay Guerrilla LP
Julius Eastman's seminal classics are now reissued on vinyl for the first time ever. Gay Guerrilla and Evil N*gger, both composed in 1979 with a third work Crazy N*gger, make up what Eastman called The N*gger Series. Some of the most challenging and beautiful works composed for piano during their era, they double as a window into the intricate thought process and contentiousness of their creator. When the composer was asked to perform the series at Northwestern University in 1980, due to protests by African American students, their titles were censored in the event's program. His response was a flamboyant foreshadowing of the sentiments toward bigoted language which later arose within hip-hop culture -- to publicly take back these words, assert ownership of them, and deploy their power for positive change. What Eastman was early to recognize, was that there is a fundamental difference in what happens when these words are spoken by white people toward people of color, and when people of color deploy them toward a white audience. The balance of power shifts. Eastman's audience was largely heterosexual and white. He knew exactly what he was doing, and to whom he spoke. The object in your hands contains some of the most striking and important music composed during the later decades of the 20th century -- music which remained lost and unheard for years, not because of what it is, but because of who its composer was. It is music, doubling as the voice of a man, which, because it refused to be oppressed, was suppressed or ignored. Eastman's work is a conscious act of intervention, plowing into a context defined by heterosexual whiteness, attacking its unjust demands from within. It is Christ-like -- metaphor and beauty which is impossible to separate from the evils of the world. It is a music which carries the body of a man. As it speaks to our hearts, as it offers a glimpse of the freedoms implied by the sublime, a shackle is bound -- a consciousness of our complicity with unforgivable sin. Mastering by Giuseppe Ielasi. Includes printed inner sleeve housing a Nagaoka anti-static record sleeve, plus an original insert that functions as obi; Housed in a fold-out outer sleeve. 180 gram, color vinyl; Edition of 300.

NEW YORK SKA-JAZZ ENSEMBLE, THE Minor Moods LP
Brixton Records presents a reissue of The New York Ska-Jazz Ensemble's Minor Moods, originally issued in 2002. Originally ska music was strongly related to jazz, though some of the successive progression paths leaded to antipodean styles (i.e. ska-punk, oi!). But on the Jamaican side of things the original bond has never broken and ska-jazz performers have reached extraordinary technical heights. The New York Ska-Jazz Ensemble is a super-band formed by eight musicians coming from legendary ska groups well known around the globe (The Skatalites, The Toasters and Scofflaws). NYSJE proclaims with pride the connection between jazz and original ska but also adding today's attitude and skills. Minor Moods was recorded in New York's Studio 900 except for the last track, "Buttah", recorded live in Geneva (Switzerland) in July 2002. Most of the tracks are instrumentals but the album also includes two vocal tracks, "Your Love For Me" and "Cecilia", the latter a cover of Paul Simon's classic delivered in reggae manner. All tracks are vitalist, lively and flawlessly executed. Rhythm is the lead but the melodies are catchy and immediate, being the themes expanded on by the various instruments in a jazz pattern. Tracks are composed by Peter Truffa (two tracks, piano), Freddie Reiter (four tracks, sax) and Andy Stack (three tracks, guitar) with the addition of cover versions of originals by Miles Davis ("Nardis"), Thelonious Monk ("Bemsha Swing") plus the above-mentioned Paul Simon song and a composition by D. James ("Buttah"). Minor Moods is a magnificent album radiating optimism that ska enthusiasts will enjoy as much as reggae and jazz aficionados. This is a true gem to delight in for a long time.

AKATZ Rudo Bilbao LP
Brixton Records presents a reissue of Akatz's Rudo Bilbao, originally released in 2009. An old dream come true. The masterpiece of the band Akatz, album Rudo Bilbao, is now available in glorious vinyl. Originally released in 2009 in CD, the ten tracks of this great record show the sheerest essence of Akatz. Akatz is the band from Bilbao that has assumed with pride and hard work the leading role in the Basque Jamaican scene for 25 years. Rejecting impersonations, Akatz has been forged in a thousand battles, concerts and recordings creating its own individual musical personality. A planet packed of good vibes and music for the dance floor with plenty of satellites of black music rotating around it: ska, soul, rocksteady, jazz R&B, roots, etc. However, what the band was missing in its career was "the definitive recording creation". An album they could point at in the firmament and clearly identify as its own, and that piece is without a doubt Rudo Bilbao (Rude Bilbao). This album exhibits Akatz in its sheerest expression showing in ten tracks their first-rate taste and at the same time stating with sense of humor but also with delight their "Pride of Bilbao". All the intensity of their live sound has been faithfully captured at A-Lone Muzik Studio, produced by Roberto Sánchez. Their delivery is passionate, á la Jamaican big bands, with lyrics created by singer, composer and frontman Unai Quecedo aka Bita on tracks like "Rudo Bilbao", "Luces" (Lights), "Na De Na" (Nothing At All) and guitar player Josu Santamaría in "Así Eres Tu" (The Way You Are) and "Predispuesto A Ska" (Tendency To Ska) make the whole album sound distinctly urban, evoking scenery of the nightlife in town, of the clubs, of the streets. Stories of impossible love affairs, of too much drinking or of encounters at the back of a bar, these are songs that will surely recall your own experiences in your own town. Especially if you are from Bilbao since this disk shows off the Main Street of Jamaican Bilbao, of Rudo Bilbao.

TAJAK Ciclos LP
Tajak is a Mexican trio playing psychedelia, drone and shoegaze, with a powerful and hypnotic sound that has made them one of the revelations of psychedelia emerging in Latin America, leading them to play in various international festivals. Ciclos, the band's third album, represents the maturity of their sound. Ciclos is an effort from the band to represent a path, going through the different facets of being, in a plane that transcends time. The trio chose to experiment with new ways of composing. This album is a trip through the never-ending cycle of life, imbued with their perception and perspective of it. The group's name Tajak is from the Kiliwa's (Baja California ethnic group) dialect that means "skeleton". Tajak were formed in 2014 in Mexico City, although the members come from the Baja California Peninsula. The band is known for their unexpected and long improvisations at their live appearances. GOLDING AND ELLIOT GALVIN, BINKER Ex Nihilo LP
Binker Golding (the sax in Binker and Moses) is "Coltranesque" according to John Fordham's review of jazz in 2018 for The Guardian, and this record sees him forging a new partnership with Elliot Galvin, whose "technical brilliance is matched with a very British sense of eccentricity" (The Jazz Mann). "The combination of saxophonist Binker Golding and pianist Elliot Galvin is guaranteed to be awe-inspiring," says London Jazz News, and this full album doesn't disappoint. Elliot describes the record as "high energy and spontaneous", which is definitely on point -- an energy it maintains for over 40 minutes. Six new tracks recorded at The Vortex in London, which pull on all Binker's and Elliot's technical repertoire and delve into the experimental recesses of the minds of two of London's young foremost exponents of jazz.

VACCINA, LINO CAPRA Metafisiche Del Suono CD
2017 release. For fans of the Italian avant-garde, few names inspire the loyalty and devotion offered to the percussionist and composer Lino Capra Vaccina -- a perfect emblem of the country's extraordinary movement of musical minimalism. He first gained note as a member of Aktuala, a project which laid the groundwork for an entire generation of practitioners following in their wake -- creating a hybrid of rock, avant-garde, and ancient musics, while incorporating a diverse number of sonic traditions from across the globe -- African, Middle Eastern, Indian, etc. Vaccina's career as composer has been marked by two distinct features, an incredibly high bar of quality and ambition, and a tragically slim amount of recorded output. Following his departure from Aktuala, he worked extensively with others, like Juri Camisasca, Franco Battiato, etc., and within the short-lived super group Telaio Magnetico, but his solo efforts have been slow to emerge, appearing as carefully considered statements which are so remarkable and singular, that they pull the rug from beneath the entire world of experimental approach. In 1978 he released the legendary LP Antico Adagio (DS 027-1LP/DS 027CD), and wouldn't be heard from again until 1992's equally extraordinary L'Attesa. In the years since, only a tiny handful of recordings have emerged, most recently in the hands of the Italian imprint Dark Companion, who now returns with Metafisiche Del Suono, the latest installment in Vaccina's astounding canon of work. Metafisiche Del Suono is elegance and constraint personified -- a crown jewel in a remarkable composer's long career. Like all of Vaccina's work, it rests in an undefinable realm, defying definition and category. Largely executed by the composer on a range of instruments -- vibraphone, chimes, bells, various percussion, piano, strings, gong, and metallophone -- it also features stunning contributions on oboe and English horn by Camillo Mozzoni, psaltery, dulcimer, guitar, and autoharp by Michael Tanner, and viola by Alison Cotton, on a handful of its works, vastly broadening the world of tonal interplay set forth by Vaccina. Across the album's six compositions, unfolds expanses of ambience; sheets of sound-physic wonders, which, while feeling entirely singular and personal, mange to crystallize a confounding range of human emotion and experience.

VACCINA, LINO CAPRA Arcaico Armonico CD
2015 release. Following his time in Aktuala, Lino Capra Vaccina published a seminal album in 1976, Antico Adagio, recently removed from the clutches of the vultures of rare disk from Die Schachtel (DS 027-1LP/DS 027CD). A few years after, another unmissable gem waiting for future reprints. Back to the studio after the incredible success of the reprint of Antico Adagio, Lino wanted to continue on the path laid out in his historical album: compositions, intuitions, emotions that were maturing for years, resting as the like of a good Borgogna wine, now ready to be shared with a wider audience. Also, for this new work, to his percussion, gong, tablas, bells, vibraphone, cymbals, dishes, and strange instruments natives Lino did not want to apply any "trick". All the sounds you'll hear in this extraordinary journey are strictly acoustic, no any kind of electronics are involved. Playing with tape delays, co-adjuvanted by a sound engineer visionary as Alberto Callegari, located at Elfo Studios which is a wonderful state-of-the-art place amidst the woods in the country of Piacenza. Max Marchini has produced this album with pure analog intents. Lino wanted around him three companions extraordinary as Paolo Tofani, legendary composer and guitarist of Italian prog/avant-garde band Area at the Mandhura for a breathtaking duet in "Dialoghi Tra Suoni (Dialogues Between Sounds)", Camillo Mozzoni on oboe, oboe d'amore, and English horn wove arabesques of arcane memory in "Archaic Armonico", and the old mate Juri Camisasca who stretched layers of voices in the enchanted "Ancrestrale Andante (Andante Ancestral)". Eons away from any new age suggestions, the music of Lino Capra Vaccina, in constant evolution, discovers pages submerged by ancient memories shared. The throb of skins beatings brings scents of the time; together with the voice, that as well remembered by Joan La Barbara, it is the original instrument. An album that marks a new stage in the new music. A disc where the sound is at the center, as the Klang contrapposto Foné, in an emotional universe of incomparable beauty that takes the listener to a different perception of time and space. SOLLEN, JEANETTE Ripe When Yields To Gentle Pressure LP
Dark Companion come up roses again with dazzling, never-before-heard, haunting compositions and songs by Jeanette Sollén, compiled from her archive specifically for this album. Transparent emerald green audiophile vinyl; Edition of 300 (hand-numbered).Sollén on the collection: "My first recordings were on an old tape recorder in my childhood bedroom. I spent a lot of time with that machine. Listening to the radio and pressing the green and red buttons when something I liked came on. And I seemed to have liked a lot. One tape I still have, from when I was about six, contains an eclectic aural tapestry filled with fragments from all kinds of music. And then, in the middle of some hit song, my own singing and chatting appears. My fascination with the machine grew and I soon began to record interviews with family, friends, and neighbors. Even random people passing in the streets. I also started recording my own songs in a more organized way, on separate cassettes labeled 'My songs'. At around nine years of age I recorded 'Stars in Space'. I remember it very clearly. I'd written the lyrics in English, and the recording contained various sound effects I'd added while singing, such as rhythmically stomping in gravel. The first line went: 'Space is a big black world, full of fire, we call them staaaaars -- Stars in space, in space, in space, in space...' Looking back on these memories, I can safely say that not much has changed. The media might be different, but the recording machine is still my favorite toy. Voice and ambient sounds are still my main material. And the human experience in this mesmerizing, communicating universe, is still my topic of choice."

NONO, LUIGI Musica Manifesto N. 1 LP
LP version. Edition of 300. Die Schachtel present a reissue of Luigi Nono's Musica Manifesto N. 1, originally released in 1969. Long considered, with Pierre Boulez and Karlheinz Stockhausen, to be one point in the trinity of the post-war avant-garde, Luigi Nono was one of the most important and singular composers to emerge in the years following the Second World War. Nono's music infused the avant-garde with a sense of emotion and moral consciousness which had been previously unheard, seeking to join advanced forms of music in the social struggles of everyday life. Originally issued in 1969, none of Nono's works illuminate this radical consciousness and concern better than his seminal Musica-Manifesto N.1. Now reissued by Die Schachtel in collaboration with Archivo Storico Ricordi, it is a revolution led by one man, a window into the creative and political potential of sound. Nono's work was vocally political from its earliest days -- first as explicitly anti-fascist, pointedly embracing Marxism (he officially joined the Communist Party in 1952), before, as '60s and '70s unfolded, becoming a voice in the international worker and student struggles and the fight against the Vietnam War. It's hardly coincidental that a work as important and powerful as Musica-Manifesto N.1 emerged at the time it did. It is among the greatest sonic culminations of 1960s, composed and released just before the decade's end. Musica-Manifesto N.1, original intended to be the first part in a suite which never appeared, was commissioned by the communist administrated town of Chatillon-sous-Bagneux, in France, during the Spring of 1969. The work, manifesting in two parts, can be understood as snapshot of its moment -- incorporating texts taken from the walls of Paris in May, 1968, read by Edmonda Aldini against the voices of Communist leaders like Che Guevara, Ho Chi Minh, and Mao, as well as recordings of the riots and protests which occurred at the Venice Biennale in June, '68. Both sides of Musica-Mainifesto N.1, "Un Volto, Del Mare" and "Non Consumiamo Marx", are works for magnetic tape, the first archived through careful editing to achieve a singular polyphonic complexity, while the second utilizes manipulation of its source material through filters and modulators, played against electronically generated sounds. The cumulative result remains a legendary culmination of avant-garde practice and political struggle. Features a tabloid/poster with texts by Veniero Rizzardi and unpublished photos of the 1968 Venice Biennale riots.

Capri-Batterie is a trio comprised of Kordian Tetkov on drums, Tim Sayer on trumpet and electronics, and Matthew Lord on bass and saxophone. With an unrestricted approach to improvisation that embraces the philosophy of "freedom", as an affront to oppression in all its modern-day manifestations. If you think you have heard improvised music, think again. Stewart Lee should need no introduction, as undoubtedly the most original stand-up comedian in more than 30 or so years. He is also a highly regarded writer and director. Stewart has been involved in numerous interesting musical projects and maintains a strong association with the avant-garde and improvised scene. It's not often that something can genuinely be described as "unique". This can be though, there is nothing like it. Anywhere. Edition of 500.

CHAMPAGNE DUB Drops LP
Champagne Dub is a collective of selected artists who come together to practice psychedelic dub rituals. The project was conceived by drummer and producer Betamax (The Comet Is Coming, Soccer96) who makes a nod to a range of influences through free improv, psychedelic post-punk, English folk, performance art, and '70s dub. However, the band also draws on the teachings of Zen Buddhist philosophy to create sound without intention, to capture and dub the natural shape of subconscious intuitions. After several explosive live shows, the group headed into the studio where they found themselves deep in the presence of a 1/4" tape machine, the results of which were soaked in a biochemically-enhanced mix of reverb and analog effects. Once the vision was truly realized and tested on some animals, it was deemed safe for public consumption and pressed onto vinyl. Drops will be released into the sonic environment with the spiritual guidance of Faith And Industry. Bass player Ruth Goller (Melt Yourself Down/Acoustic Ladyland) applies her distinctive sonic boom to the low end of the group. Punk as fuck and funkier than a pimp truck, Goller pummels pure tones through the dirt with all the rhythmic precision of a washing cycle set to 'silk with rinse'. Ed Briggs is a sound artist from Brighton who plays homemade synths incorporating mechanical parts from a hurdy-gurdy. He also programs using MaxMSP, performing mind-melting sound granulation in real time. Briggs is a full-time DIY inventor and home-science experimenter with a family background in English folk. Mr Noodles, the anonymous performance artist/vocalist, uses many voices, shamanic percussion and unpredictable movement, haunting the band with a plethora of dreamy mantras. Mexican artist Nahum Mantra's day job normally sees him working as an artist/magician. Nahum mastered the art of hypnotism at a young age, and his career has gravitated towards the link between science and art. Also a member of Orchestra Elastique, Champagne Dub sees him feature on his natural instrument the Theremin. Betamax has been playing drums for ages. However after taking mushrooms he realized that there was a deeper layer of rhythm that remained trapped by his ego, an expression so honest, naked and uncultured that it had been withheld by the subconscious. It was a rhythm that couldn't be understood, one that always shifted, but always spoke the truth. Sometimes still, other times explosive, Champagne Dub is what is now.

YOUNGS, RICHARD Dissident LP
Dissident is Richard Youngs's strong follow up to 2018's Belief and Endless Futures (REDUX 015LP, 2018). Youngs is also a member of Amor. Youngs on the recording: "Dissident is a hallucination of a legendary lost Samizdat-style recording of the legendary lost Richard Youngs Band. It's not clear to me that it is against anything in particular, and as such it is not literally dissident. In fact, I'm a little lost how or why it is dissident, save for being informed by the imagined provisional recordings of pre-Glasnost protest. Perhaps the wordless scratch vocals are voicing dissent, but I remember having fun. So much so, I couldn't stop myself from fleshing out the rough nylon guitar songs to a full band arrangement, recorded in multiple spaces." 180 gram vinyl.

VA Calypso Guapacha LP
"Zombie Club presents Calypso Guapacha, the fourth sonic artifact after his "Come To The Caribbean (GR 029LP, 2014), Mambo Calypso (2014) and Limbo (GR 027LP, 2016) successful releases. Once again, the concept is clear and simple: taking a trip on an imaginary sonic cruise to the islands, harbors and mountains of the Caribbean through rhythms and dances that recreate the tropical atmosphere that bring the festive spirit of these lands around the world. This time, we begin with a strange calypso song played on electric guitar by Cuban Wilson & His Combo followed by some tracks from the West Indies such as calypso, Haitian meringue, quelbe, mento or goombay. These rhythms are sung in English but they introduce the sparkly presence of the clave (wooden sticks from Cuba) that sets the beat on which all the musical structure is based, not only in the Caribbean music but also in all the African-roots music. Thanks to that, musicians who sing in different languages can share a primal and common musical home. The B side focuses on the Spanish-language tunes, with montunos, bombas and cumbias from Cuba, Puerto Rico and Colombia. However, we've chosen a doo-wop/mambo as a way of conclusion in order to show that Caribbean music isn't just limited to that specific geographic area. That is it, we are embarking in Cuba going around the Caribbean to arrive in the USA, singing in different languages with different rhythms but finding a pulse that's shared by all of them: the clave. Well, it's OK, we don't want to theorize too much, it's about moving the hips and enjoying. That's why we tell you, one more time: 'Ay, sí, sí...we want to mambo!'" --Señor Zombie. Some tracks have been remastered and restored and some are presented on vinyl after many years. Format and selection designed for DJs, collectors and general public. Also features: The Fabulous McClevertys, The Lion, Reuben McCoy & The Hamiltonians, Pierre Murat Et Son Ensemble, Luis Kalaff, Charlie Adamson, The Wigglers, Ñico Saquito, Cristóbal Pérez, Maelo Y Cortijo, Trío Matamoros, Chuito El De Bayamón, Pedro Laza Y Sus Pelayeros, Walfredo De Los Reyes, and The Dootones. 300 gram sleeve, includes download.

ALPHA STONE Stereophonic Pop Art Music 2LP
Pete "Bassman" Bain, one of the founding members of the UK cult psych rock band Spacemen 3, formed Alpha Stone after Spacemen 3 and his other band The Darkside split up in the mid-nineties. In 1996, Alpha Stone recorded the album Stereophonic Pop Art Music and it was released on Bomp! Records on CD. The album hasn't had a "proper" vinyl release until now. You can clearly hear that Pete Bassman was the driving force behind Alpha Stone; fuzz, synthesizer-sweeps, programmed drums, and processed vocals are the cornerstones in Alpha Stone's sound. Raga-like mantras, heard in "Farmer C", lies track-to-track with more percussion-driven grooves and psychedelic pop-oriented songs. The album's sound has obviously survived the 20+ years shelved in obscurity and proves the "Drugby" sound still vital.

JUANECO Y SU COMBO El Gran Cacique LP
Infopesa present a reissue of Juaneco Y Su Combo's El Gran Cacique, originally issued in 1972. At the beginning of 1966, in the Amazonian city Pucallpa of Peru, merchant and musician Juan Wong Paredes decided to form a group to share and play some upbeat music throughout the city. Wong Paredes, of Chinese ancestry, enjoyed playing music with his accordion, especially at the Peruvian jungle parties known as tahuampas. After finishing his military service, his son Juan Wong Popolizio decided to collaborate with his father's band, and was joined by his friend Noe Fachín, who took on lead guitar and composing duties. Popolizio and Fachín worked together to select six young natives from the area who shared their love for exotic music, rhythms, and modern tracks that filtered in from the Colombian and Brazilian borders. All together, these members became one of the best psychedelic cumbia bands ever: Juaneco y Su Combo. The members of the band included Juan Wong Popilizio as the director, keyboard player, and arranger, Fachín on lead guitar, and Wilindoro Cacique as the vocalist as well as the guiro and tambourine player. They were joined by Walter Domínguez on bass guitar, Rosendo Hidalgo on drums, Wilberto Murrieta on second guitar, Juvencio Pinchi on percussions, and Jairo Aguilar Tejada on bongos. In 1972, they were signed by Infopesa and recorded their first LP, El Gran Cacique. This LP, named eponymously after the nickname of the leader of the band, featured a timeless version of the Brazilian toada "Mulher Rendeira" with vocals from Cacique, becoming an instant hit. "Vacilando Con Ayahuasca," an instrumental cumbia composed by Fachín, was also recorded for this album, and it featured some sexy hypnotic vocals from Infopesa´s secretary. Nowadays, El Gran Cacique" is considered one of the world´s essential cumbia records, and after 46 years, this iconic album returns as zestful as ever in a special vinyl reissue that will surely reignite the psychedelic craze again. This vinyl release was remastered from the original analog tapes at Infopesa's studio by Aldo Montalvo under the direction of Juan Ricardo and Alberto Maraví, who produced and oversaw the original mastering of the record in 1972. It's packaged with an artwork that uses the original cover of the LP reinterpreted by well-known Peruvian collage master Yerko Zlatar.

BOOKER, JAMES At Onkel Po's Carnegie Hall Hamburg 1976, Vol. 1 2LP
Double-LP version. 180 gram vinyl; gatefold sleeve. The series continues! He was one of the greatest blues musicians, who died too early: James Booker. This concert from 1976 shows Booker on one of his best performances ever. James C. Booker's performance was exceptionally marvelous and just what blues should be all about. All the talk about his problems and the creation of legends which immediately started after his early death in 1983 (in the waiting room of a rehabilitation clinic), seemed so unimportant and irrelevant that day, just as irrelevant as the timetable of the Hamburg metro; because it does not matter if the last train has already departed (as on that particular evening) with an artist performing many of his own creations but also several blues-classics with so much devotion while being deeply rooted in the spiritual soil of this special city located between Mississippi and Lake Pontchartrain. Recorded October 27, 1976 at Onkel Pö's Carnegie Hall, Hamburg, Germany; Recorded by NDR Hamburg. Features extended liner notes in English and German by Michael Laages.

After a phase as an electronic act consisting of Galeano exclusively, Frente Cumbiero has returned to its traditional quartet format, which focuses in the most powerful bangs of tropical sound on the dance floor, combining two wind instruments, live percussion and electronic sounds/dubbed sequences. LOS NUEVOS CREYENTES El Sonido Bendito De Los Nuevos Creyentes LP
Little Butterfly Records presents a first physical issue of Los Nuevos Creyentes's El Sonido Bendito De Los Nuevos Creyentes (2017). "After the auspicious homonymous EP (2015), with just five songs, Los Nuevos Creyentes released online El Sonido Bendito De Los Nuevos Creyentes (2017), their first LP that reflects the band's musical universe. Sometimes, the wavy guitars of Matías Singer and Zelmar Borrás remind one of Television, while Santiago Bogacz's Farfisa (also known for his project Matador) gives a lysergic accent to the rhythm section of drummer Diego Prestes and bassist Rodrigo Gils. The styles that come together in this LP show a band with a certain curiosity to experiment and reflect the influences of bands like The Seeds. Their instrumental songs, like 'Palabra De Un Misionero' or 'Licencia Para Resucitar, bring a sound that rides to the temple, riding to the trance. Aside from the place they give to instrumentals, they have lyrics which have as much of introspection and years of therapy ('la pregunta es la respuesta en sí/the question is the answer itself' in 'Espectro') as redemption, broken hearts and sordid thoughts released on parole. There is also a remarkable fascination with esotericism and the mysteries of invisible worlds: from the band's name (Los Nuevos Creyentes/The New Believers) and the album's title (El Sonido Bendito De Los Nuevos Creyentes/The Holy Sound Of Los Nuevos Creyentes) to their attention towards life in outer space. These space cowboys bring a perfect album for a spaghetti western soundtrack, where the awaken outsider arrives to a bar in the middle of the desert, thirsty, asks for hard liquor while he watches the sheriff's wife and lays his gaze at a fixed point, just to hallucinate with new mirages." --Nelson Barceló

DAWN new breed LP
LP version. Following her acclaimed trilogy of solo albums, electronic R&B innovator DAWN (formerly Dawn Richard) returns with new breed, a new album-length project that dates back to her upbringing in New Orleans, taking in the city's rich traditions and musical heritage. After releasing an initial taste of the album through the slow burning R&B of "jealousy", today sees DAWN drop the album's second single and title track. A self-produced return to the electronically-focused sonics of her previous solo work, new breed is an authoritative stamp on the genre in her own unique fashion. Set across ten tracks, the album provides the most intimate portrait of DAWN's life so far, harking back to her years growing up in New Orleans and paying tribute to the city's culture, sights and sounds. Presenting a duality between the more soulful sounds of the city's more traditional forms of R&B and DAWN's own innovative brand of electronic sonics, new breed sees DAWN at her most eclectic, drawing on a wide range of influences and, alongside contributions from the likes of Cole M.G.N (Christine & The Queens, Ariel Pink), Kaveh Rastegar (John Legend, Sia), and Hudson Mohawke, has been largely self-produced. Driven by innovations in tech as well as music, in 2016 DAWN became the first ever artist to perform live in 360 degrees on YouTube, partnered with Wired for the release of an award-nominated virtual reality version of her single "Not Above That", and joined Adult Swim as a curator and designer. Her last album Redemption (LOC 010CD/LP, 2017) went top 5 in the Billboard Dance Charts, and saw her subsequently collaborate with Dirty Projectors, Kimbra, and Mumdance on a series of singles. Live, Dawn has spent the Autumn of 2019 touring with her former Danity Kane band-mates as well as Kimbra, and performed at Adult Swim's festival. With new breed, DAWN has further set herself apart as one of R&B's true iconoclasts, merging styles and metamorphosing them to her own style to create one of the most important, culturally relevant projects of recent times. Increasingly carving her own lane in the landscape of contemporary music, DAWN is writing her own legend; one that those after her have no choice but to follow.

D'AKI, KIKI Breve Encuentro LP+CD
Breve Encuentro is the new Kikí d'Akí album, nine years after No Mires Atrás (2009). This awaited comeback developed over several parties and tribute shows in the last few years where María José (Jose) Serrano and Sergio López de Haro were invited to take part. The songs included here belong to different periods and authors, but they are all akin to Jose and Sergio's spirit. They see themselves reflected in them and have tried to give something back in this encounter. Almost unintentionally, these songs asked to take shape together. In order to achieve it, Jose and Sergio chose a succinct format of just vocal and guitar, plus the occasional contribution of a few friends on vocals. For the production and mastering they enrolled Ramón Leal, who captured the intimate and straightforward sound they were after. The result is eleven close and captivating performances of titles from the repertoire of Vainica Doble, Bernardo Bonezzi, Fórmula V, Carlos Berlanga, Françoise Hardy, France Gall and Charlie Mysterio. These eleven close and captivating performances form the return of one of the most personal voices of Spanish pop music, absent for too long in the form of fleeting songs and characters, like glances on a train platform, which arrived to stay. MYSTERIO Mysterio LP+CD
Fernando Márquez (aka El Zurdo) (of Kaka de Luxe, Paraíso and La Mode fame) has described Charlie Mysterio as a worthy representative of the "third route", a grey and special land also inhabited, according to Márquez, by other Spanish artists such as Vainica Doble or Solera, characterized by musical coordinates halfway between the elevated, the sublime and accessible pop, maybe both things at the same time. (Charlie) Mysterio is a project in constant transformation which looks for beauty in imperfection, unbridled effervescence, honest stimulation, and with all that he creates songs in the old-fashioned way, with catchy choruses and vocal harmonies but also testing the surprise threshold of the listener. He's a singer-songwriter with a fuzz pedal and a Roland TR-606 as travel companions on this journey, which could be another one tomorrow and will probably change again on the stage. In a career spanning several decades, Charlie Mysterio has never ceased writing beautiful and timeless songs spread among a large discography on labels such as Spicnic, Walden, Elefante He has recorded with Kikí d'Akí, Papaya, and Márquez, among others, and his work has always received the support of Juan de Pablos, becoming a fixture on his national radio show Flor de Pasión. Mysterio's new album opens a new musical door for him compared to Los Caramelos, his main project over the years. This time he delivers an eponymous album bursting with anthem-like eternal melodies, songs that would reach the top of the pop charts in an ideal imagined world. At times one can imagine a hypothetical collaboration between Suicide and The Beach Boys with Giorgio Moroder producing, but there are also moments that go beyond any possible comparison where Mysterio plays with the listener using his own language. LOS JETS Leccion De Twist LP+CD
Los Jets were one of the most important bands in the emergence of rock and roll in Argentina, and were also pioneers in fusion, recording Argentine and Latin American folk songs with a rock beat. The group was formed in mid-1961 and started out with four members: Héctor Ziblat (bass), Jorge "Jackie" Álvarez (vocals), Guillermo Fuertes (guitar, vocals), and Héctor "Memmo" Campione (drums). After a few months, Martin "Chivo" Echemendi, an excellent drummer who played alongside Memmo, joined, creating the first group in Argentina with two drummers. In September 1962, the line-up of Los Jets changed again, adding a new lead vocalist, Jorge Omar Vidal. Their first LP, La Pecosita, was released in 1963; the title track was the group's first hit. The group's second LP, Twist Y Gritos was released at the height of their success, in mid-1964. This album contained three versions of Beatles songs: "Ámame" ("Love Me Do"), "Quiero tener tu mano" ("I Want To Hold Your Hand") and "Twist y gritos" ("Twist And Shout"). It also included the band's biggest hit, "Lana" and "Shuripep", a song composed by Los Jets when that still wasn't common practice. Although some describe them as one of the first bands to "imitate" The Beatles, the truth is that Los Jets were part of that period that anticipated the famous "British Invasion". After The Beatles conquered the United States in February 1964, Los Jets' label commissioned them to record three Beatles songs in Spanish, anticipating the release of the original tracks. This meant that Los Jets became the first band to perform The Beatles' music in Argentina (and possibly in South America). Recognizing that The Beatles were to change the pop landscape radically, Los Jets tried to evolve with the times and their third album changed direction in terms of quality of execution and production. Regrettably, it wasn't released; shortly after recording the master tape was erased. According to members of the band and their friends, this was how the group's most powerful recording disappeared. In these lost recordings there was a new band member, the guitarist Óscar Islas, former member of Los Ciclones. Later, in May 1965, Vidal left the group and Óscar joined permanently, while Guillermo became the lead vocalist until Los Jets disbanded in February 1966. Leccion De Twist gathers tracks from their two LPs, singles and their only surviving live recording, recorded in January, 1966. Includes CD with 15 bonus tracks.

MATTIN Songbook #7 LP
Songbook #7 is the new volume of Mattin's Songbook series, one of the most interesting works in the current experimental, improv and noise field. Songbook #7 features Farahnaz Hatam, Colin Hacklander, Lucio Capece, Moor Mother, Cathleen Schuster, and Marcel Dickhage and was recorded in November 2017 at Digging the Global South Festival in Cologne, while Europe was (still is) slowly going down. Layers of avant-garde tradition culminate into a set of songs that go beyond themselves. In times of increasing desperation emerges a strange record: a disintegrated manifesto exploring the truth of disagreement. Exactly 100 years ago Europe was really crumbling. However, there was a proposition for a collective future in process. This songbook takes two moments as historical inspiration in order to rethink the present: The first seven months of 1917 in revolutionary Russia, and the figure of Germaine Berton (pictured on the cover), the anarchist who in 1923 was accused of murdering Marius Plateau, director of the far-right organization French Action League. In a time of war and fascism, those were two very different answers: a collective attempt at social transformation and a desperate lonely gesture. Neither response really managed to succeed to overthrow capitalism but they had a motivation and a clear way to act, something that seems to be lacking right now. If previous songbooks dealt with the tension between improvisation and song structure, between an emphasis on the production of the moment and having a conceptual framework, here the tension is produced by conflating the present with the past, and in doing so the tension between communism and anarchism is also explored. Songbook #7 digs into some of the most important issues today: dissolution and disappointment of the social fabric, the rise of fascism, lack of coherence in a collective vision for the future, and the shortcomings of democracy in a capitalist system. If one wants some musical references you can imagine one of those collaborations between Red Crayola and Art And Language if it was produced by Roberta Settels, or if Rabit was asked to do a remix of Nono's La Fabbrica Illuminata, taking into account the Altoforno di Cornigliano factory's demolition in 2005. This great line-up tries to think the present through the lenses of radical historical moments and in doing so it achieves music both arcane and futuristic.

BELAIRS, THE Mr Moto: The Origins of Surf Music 1960-1963 LP+CD
Although their official output was very limited, The Belairs were one of the key bands in the birth of surf music. They spawned an influential musical legacy, paved the way for many other surf bands and their members went on to other famous outfits such as The Standells, Eddie & The Showmen, and The Challengers. Mr Moto: The Origins of Surf Music 1960-1963 gathers their 1961 hit "Mr Moto" and other studio and home recordings. The story of The Belairs started in 1959 in South Bay, Los Angeles. The first line-up consisted of Eddie Bertrand (guitar), Paul Johnson (guitar), Chas Stuart (saxophone), Richard Delvy (drums), and Jim Roberts (piano). Surf music was in its infancy as instrumental music fusing early rock with Middle Eastern, Mexican and Hawaiian touches. Playing fast, melodic scales and dealing with the use of reverb, it was a truly innovative sound. Dick Dale, The Ventures, and Duane Eddy hit the venues and airwaves. In this context, Bertrand and Johnson honed their trademark dual-guitar sound. Creating a unique sound to make their strings reverberate, the band signed with the Arvee label, which released Mr Moto in 1961, a surf-rock song with a flamenco-inspired intro. Their sound didn't have -- at least during this first phase -- a bass player. The bass-less structure worked in their favor, giving a special character to all the guitar nuances. Their short and successful career (not in terms of sales but in opening doors for other surf groups) was destined to produce only one more official single, with a different line-up. Their second single, Volcanic Action/Runaway (included here), was not even officially released. The band had some line-up changes, including adding a bass player, Steve Lotto, and new members like drummer Dickie Dodd and guitarist Art Fisher. This collection also includes four tracks recorded while The Belairs were without a record label. Songs like the propulsive "Chiflado", the danceable rock and roll "Duck Waddle", the swinging, jazzy "The Shimmy", and the hypnotic "Squad Car" prove the quality of the band's repertoire. In 1963, the instrumental fever gave its way to the explosion of the vocal surf music and success of the Beach Boys, Jan & Dean, and popsters such as Frankie Avalon and Fabian mixing the surf aura with a more pop approach. Curiously, Johnson was invited to join The Beach Boys, but he declined the offer, staying firm in his convictions. Includes CD with 12 bonus tracks.

MITTA, JAY Tatizo Pesa LP
The hyper blaze of Jay Mitta's debut album, Tatizo Pesa kicks off a trio of searing singeli albums from the sound's ground zero: the Sisso Studios of the Mburahati ghetto, Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania. A breathtaking boost of 180bpm+ rhythms, syncopated loops and nagging hooks, Tatizo Pesa notably introduces 13-year-old MC sensation Dogo Janja alongside nine knockout instrumentals that make much western dance music seem prissy and pedestrian. Dispatched by the acclaimed Nyege Nyege Tapes from Kampala, Uganda, Tatizo Pesa presents the raw, untrammeled energy of Tanzanian singeli with immediate effect. Like his peers, Bamba Pana, DJ Balotelli, and DJ Longo, Jay Mitta combines traces of older, local folk melodies with elements of "bongo flava", or up-to-the-minute Swahili rap music, but at breakneck tempos that give the sound its inexorable energy and verve. Their style takes traditional music into orbit of contemporary, accelerated styles ranging from Grenadian jab jab/soca to Chicago footwork, hardcore UK rave and French flashcore. Jay Mitta's debut offering renders the lushest, variegated spectrum of singeli since the style emerged in its current form only a few years ago. On the one hand he plays up to pure rave needs with outright steamers such as "Don Bet", and the ratchet tension of "Mwakidimba", but they're balanced with hip-hop swagger in the standout title tune featuring 13-year-old Dogo Janja, and the deep south bounce-esque of "Masera", while the mercurial quickstep of "Dura" and "Mchuma Bet" are bound to snag wider-eared ravers with their so-fast-they're-weightless string and key arrangements. It's very hard to ignore that with Tatizo Pesa, Jay Mitta has produced a new and unmissable high-water mark of the ancient yet up-to-the-second east African music bound to translate directly to all willing bodies. Mastered and cut by Matt Colton. Edition of 300, blue vinyl.

L7 Bricks Are Heavy LP
"Bricks Are Heavy was the third album by L7 originally released in 1992. Produced by Butch Vig Bricks Are Heavy is somewhat poppier with more focused songwriting than their previous LPs and was the bands breakthrough album fueled by the success of the single 'Pretend We're Dead'. L7 was often associated with the then raging Grunge movement (even though they were from L.A.) and it's not hard to see why as the album features abrasive, sledgehammer guitar riffs and plenty of heavy rockers with the songs 'Wargasm', 'Slide', and 'Everglade'. The group emphasized their feminist and Riot Grrrl side with 'This Ain't Pleasure' and 'Diet Pill'. First domestic release on green vinyl for this early 90s alternative classic." Green vinyl

Eva Be has been a key figure on the development of Berlin underground club culture, going back to the '90s and her involvement with the Sonar Kollektiv crew. "Delight" kicks things off with a low-slung groove with Chicago-esque percussion. Some of Eva's love for dub and reggae is also present. "Breathe" is a little more floor-focused -- a hard-knocking kick starts this off and the track develops into something deep, emotional, and driving. "Pills" is the third offering -- precise-yet-wonky drums, breakbeats, deep pads, and synth lines that gel together into a perfect, hedonistic whole. Purple vinyl.

CROATIAN AMOR Isa LP
In 2019, Croatian Amor returns with a new album, Isa. Copenhagen's Loke Rahbek works in a wide variety of forms. His prolific rate of activity is best viewed through his and Christian Stadgaard's Posh Isolation label. Of Rahbek's many projects, his most eloquent and gentle is Croatian Amor. 2017's single "Finding People" bloomed from Croatian Amor's previous album, the widely acclaimed Love Means Taking Action (ALT 028CD/PI 180LP). These melancholic transmissions presented a kind of alien pop. For Isa, he has drawn on an impressive list of guests to realize a nauseating narrative of virtual communication and eschatological programming. The album's title invokes a messianic entity, and though it's hard to tell what's imagined or remembered anymore, the play that Croatian Amor is known for feels far more vivid today. "Enhance photo to reveal a picture of Bird caught mid-flight; enhance again, the bird has a human face screaming." Never pessimistic, Croatian Amor circles themes of tragedy and comfort to animate a sense of hope. His accomplices pluck details from his graphic scenes like a searchlight drifting over a starlit surface. Alto Aria, Soho Rezanejad, and Jonnine Standish of HTRK, each contribute vocals across the album, cloaked and kerned on Croatian Amor's inimitable stage. "Eden 1.1" and its accompaniment "Eden 1.2" feature the voices of Frederikke Hoffmeier (Puce Mary) and Yves Tumor, respectively. These are some of album's most delicate pieces, and where one may find respite from the helix of damaged rhythms that eddy across Isa. Familiar faces from Copenhagen are solicited throughout, and perhaps the album's most endearing quality is the space for volatility that all of the collaboration has invited. All the signals and timelines lead everywhere and back. Maybe it's only the myths that get us? The cover of Isa features work by artist Amitai Romm. "Tracing reflections that float in the pool: the water is lost in all images. Two skies hold glass billboards."

DEREN, MAYA Divine Horsemen: Voodoo Gods of Haiti LP
Restocked, last copies. "Maya Deren journeyed to Haiti to make a film of ritual dances, instead, she came to be accepted as a Voudoun initiate, whose devotees commune with the cosmic powers through invocation, offerings, song and dance of the Voudoun pantheon of deities, or Loa, whom are witnessed as being living gods and goddesses, actually taking possession of their devotees. Deren describes the relationship between magic, science and religion bringing a uniquely lyrical voice to her narrative. This paints a multi-textured, infinitely complex portrait of a spiritual tradition with roots stretching back to the very dawn of humanity. Joseph Campbell calls Divine Horsemen 'the most illuminating introduction that has yet been rendered to the whole marvel of the Haitian mysteries as 'facts of the mind.'' Included in this album are some of the first recordings ever made during religious ceremonies near Croix de Missions and Petionville featuring selections that serve as a soundtrack to the film she shot documenting Voodoo ceremonies and festivals conveying the incantatory power of the ritual drumming and singing. One can hear the sounds of nature while processions begin across the landscape further giving the effect of an audio memoir. For the first time in almost 40 years, this long out-of-print cult classic is now available in a limited edition featuring a beautiful screen printed cover by Grant Corum, risograph insert with liner notes by Cherel Ito, original cover art by Teiji Ito and mastered for the first time by Timothy Stollenwerk."

HIGGINS, MONK Extra Soul Perception LP
"Sax session man on records by Bobby 'Blue' Bland, Barbara Acklin, the 5 Dutones, Charles Wright and the Watts 103rd St Rhythm Band, Alvin Cash, Otis Clay, and just about any soul artist who cut for Chess in the mid-'60s, Milt Bland a.k.a. Monk Higgins is not what you would call a household name, but hip hop crate diggers know him well; his catalog's been sampled about 250 times! Higgins recorded as a bandleader for the Dunhill, United Artists, and Buddah labels, but without a doubt the most hotly sought-after album he ever made was Extra Soul Perception, the one-off record he cut in 1968 for the Solid State label, the United Artists jazz imprint started by jazz arranger Manny Albam, producer Sonny Lester, and legendary engineer Phil Ramone. Backed by a crack band consisting of guitarist Arthur Adams and drummer John Guerin (probably best known for his work on Joni Mitchell's Court and Spark) among other accomplished session cats, Higgins' warm, earthy tenor tackles a mixture of originals and funk-infused covers of songs like 'Little Green Apples' and 'Canadian Sunset,' deftly threading the needle between commercial and uncompromising throughout. The result: a soul jazz classic that trades for as much as $90 on the used vinyl market. HAMPTON GREASE BAND Music To Eat 2LP
"Why would we reissue a record that is reputed to be the second worst-selling release in the history of Columbia Records? (Legend has it that it was undersold only by a yoga instructional album.) Well, because in the 47-some years since its release, the Hampton Grease Band's Music To Eat has steadily ascended the list of Greatest Cult Records of All Time so that now it resides at the tippety-top. Indeed, modern-day jam bands genuflect at the sight of the trippy cover art alone (Col. Bruce Hampton & the Aquarium Rescue Unit was an early '90s fixture in the movement), as the jazz/prog/psych guitar licks of Glenn Phillips and Harold Kelling give such famous duos as Betts/Allman, Verlaine/Lloyd, and Bloomfield/Bishop a run for their money. Add a generous dollop of Pop Art surrealism delivered by Hampton's Dada-ist, Beefheart-ian roar and you're left with an album that inhabits a rarefied realm somewhere between Trout Mask Replica, Anthem of the Sun, Hot Rats, Happy Trails, and maybe The Allman Brothers Band at Fillmore East (particularly because the Hampton Grease Band was also from the South but far, far stranger). But what makes this record even more special is the way it points the way forward as well as back. Yes, you can hear echoes of their more famous, improvisationally-minded contemporaries, but the offhand guitar riffs, frenzied instrumental passages, stylistic about-faces, and deadpan vocals bring to mind nothing other than a psychedelicized Minutemen (and David Thomas of Pere Ubu sounds a lot like Col. Bruce). Also, the HGB wasn't afraid to antagonize audiences, as they barely escaped with their lives after opening for Three Dog Night and Alice Cooper. In short, this isn't your dad's psychedelic rock album, nor is it your son's jam band record. This is music that stands apart from time and style, a true example of Weird America. That's why original copies command ridiculous sums; and now, Real Gone Music is proud to present the first-ever LP reissue of Music To Eat in a peach vinyl edition limited to 1000 copies, complete with the original astounding gatefold artwork. This record will change you... R.I.P. Bruce Hampton."

X-RAY SPEX Germfree Adolescents LP
"Real Gone Music is proud to present Germfree Adolescents, one of the signature albums of the early (1978) British punk movement, in an 'x-ray clear' vinyl edition that serves as an ideal prism through which to see the hypocrisy of consumerist culture. The one and only LP release from X Ray Spex and its irrepressible frontwoman Poly Styrene has been deemed by everybody from Greil Marcus to Robert Christgau to Spin to Mojo as one of the greatest punk albums ever made, and for this reissue, we've done it right; besides the clear vinyl (offering excellent sound), we've reproduced the inner lyric sheet, where you can read Poly's brilliant observations about the plastic, corporate nature of modern society. All of which she sings in a passionate yowl all her own (with Lora Logic among others backing on saxophone); this is not only one of the most penetratingly observant punk records, it's also one of the most passionate, and, surprisingly enough, catchy. LEARY PH.D, DR. TIMOTHY Turn On, Tune In, Drop Out LP
"One part psychologist, one part psychonaut, and one part huckster, Dr. Timothy Leary was one of the most fascinating and enigmatic figures to emerge from the '60s, and the fact that he released a soundtrack to a film that nobody ever saw fits right in with his modus operandi. Indeed, mass confusion reigns as to the origin of the tracks found on Turn On, Tune In, Drop Out. First of all, Leary had released an album by the same name a year earlier on the ESP-Disk label; that one was a spoken-word record offering Leary's thoughts on LSD, philosophy, and religion. Then, in 1967, Mercury Records released this record, ostensibly a soundtrack recording, but to what? Latter day sources differ as to this question; IMDB claims the soundtrack hails from five short films (including footage of the San Francisco Be-In and Andy Warhol's Plastic Inevitable, and an early Nam June Paik film featuring The Beatles), but then how could there be one soundtrack to five separate and distinct films? Other authorities provide a more plausible answer -- Turn On, Tune In, Drop Out was a film that Leary, his partner Rosemary Woodruff Leary, and long-time psychedelic traveling companion Ralph Metzner made that was so far out (even for 1967), that it received little theatrical release if any at all. In it, Leary guides Metzner on a trip through his body, through his memory, and all the way back to his evolutionary cellular origins, while Rosemary is the divine connection echoing Leary's calming words. But, unlike its eponymous predecessor, this is no mere spoken-word record; alternating with and accompanying Leary's rap is a mesmerizing East-West blend featuring guitar, tabla, and the rarely-heard veena, an Indian instrument akin to a sitar or a sarod, while odd use of reverb and sound effects create a musique concrete effect mixing voice and music. Trippy? You bet. Even the song titles chart the course of an acid trip. It's also a bit of a time machine back to the heady days of the Summer of Love; and for this limited edition vinyl reissue, we've pressed up 1600 copies in red, blue & green 'kaleidoscope' vinyl. Turn on and tune in with the guy Richard Nixon called 'The most dangerous man in America!'"

WOOD & RONNIE LANE, RON Mahoney's Last Stand LP
"What do two Faces do when their lead singer (bon vivant Rod Stewart) doesn't show up for the Ooh La La recording sessions? They work on a soundtrack for an obscure film by actor and friend Alexis Kanner (most famous for his guest roles on the late-60s TV series The Prisoner), and draft the uppermost rank of British rock royalty to play on it! Indeed, given the pedigree of the personnel on this project, it is rather stunning how obscure this 1976 album from Faces members Ron Wood and Ronnie Lane remains, having only been issued on CD abroad and for a brief time at that (and never reissued on LP); one suspects it has much to do with the flop of the film (which appears to have only been screened at the Canadian Film Festival), and the fact that the original LP was released four years after it was recorded in 1972. Just listen to the roll call of session men on Mahoney's Last Stand, which was produced by Glyn Johns, himself a British rock and roll noble of good standing and fresh from producing Paul McCartney and Wings' Red Rose Speedway when he worked on this album: Pete Townshend (guitar and "special electronic effects"), Blind Faith and Family member Rick Grech, fellow Faces Ian McLagan and Kenney Jones, soon-to-be fellow (for Wood) Rolling Stones habitués Ian Stewart, Bobby Keys, and Jim Price, Micky Waller (Wood's fellow member in the Jeff Beck Group of the late '60s), and Grease Band member Bruce Rowland to name but a few. As for the music, much of it has a rustic, rural feel in keeping with the film's setting, which follows the misadventures of a recluse who rents a ramshackle farm in the Canadian countryside, with some nods ('Woody's Thing') towards the blues-rock Wood would explore with Keith Richards in the Stones. But without a doubt the highlight is Lane's 'Just for a Moment,' which is here in both vocal and instrumental versions; it's a prime example of the wistful roots rock that made Lane's post-Faces solo career so compelling. For the first-ever vinyl reissue of this overlooked gem, we've pressed up 700 copies in green vinyl... better hurry, though, cuz they will indeed last 'just for a moment.'"

BATAAN, JOE Afrofilipino LP
"Joe Bataan's career offers a true All-American success story. Born on November 15, 1942 to African-American and Filipino parents in Spanish Harlem, Bataan briefly led a street gang and spent time in a correctional facility on a stolen car charge before emerging in the mid '60s to author his own unique blend of boogaloo, doo wop, and soul. Bataan's sound caught the ears of Fania Records, who signed him for a string of eight successful albums before Bataan left to co-found the Salsoul label -- he also came up with the name, a combination of salsa and soul -- where he recorded three albums, of which this 1975 record was the first. You'll hear a little disco and funk mixed in with the salsa and soul on this release, whose 'East Coast Side' and 'West Coast Side' were recorded on opposite sides of the country. HEDVIG MOLLESTAD TRIO Smells Funny LP
LP version. With Smells Funny being their sixth album in seven years, the explosive and expansive Hedvig Mollestad Trio have gone from strength to strength, gathering respect from both rock and jazz camps, sharing big stages with the likes of John McLaughlin and Black Sabbath, and being equally comfortable in jazz and rock clubs. Smells Funny sees Mollestad truly coming into her own as an amazing lead guitarist as well as a dependable riffmeister. Hedvig first picked up her mother's nylon-strung acoustic guitar at ten, before discovering a whole new world through her father's jazz and rock record collection as a teenager. She translated a biography of Jimi Hendrix for a school project and was given her first electric guitar and amplifier as a confirmation present. The members of the trio are from the districts, but Hedvig met Ellen Brekken and Ivar Loe Bjørnstad at the Music Academy in Oslo. Hedvig asked them to join her after she received the Jazz Talent Of The Year Award at Molde International Jazzfestival in 2009. DAY, THE Midnight Parade LP
LP version. 180 gram vinyl; Includes download code. The Day are Laura Loeters from Utrecht, Netherlands and Hamburg-based Gregor Sonnenberg. Since meeting at "Hogeschool voor de kunsten" in Arnhem, the two keep reconciling distances, differences, and always new approaches and perspectives. What runs like a thread through all of this is the interest to take charge of things themselves, try out and grow on it together. The Day is where whimsical dream pop meets a DIY ethos learned from hardcore. A sparse, springy, and rapturous dynamic alternates with a wildly imaginative dream-pop harmony, rock, and synths create just as inspiring contrasts as the refreshing, reduced postpunk references. This is continued in the songs by themes that connect and contrast the private and the political as often as possible. The Day's music expresses utopia as well as melancholy in its escapism and thus refuses to be interpreted in an overly fixed way. The band is an international long-distance constellation, an almost celebratory pan-European idea of unification (which sadly can't be emphasized too often in recent months). The Day have released two EPs by themselves, were constantly on the road, supported Kate Tempest live, and have formulated their own version of melancholic pop music. The two continue to work on creating their own version of introvert, melancholic pop music: intimate without being intruding, and speaking with inner calmness.

PENAS, GONCALO Ego De Espinhos LP
Continuing Subtext's exploratory electronics and devastating sonics is the expansive Ego De Espinhos, the debut full-length from 22-year-old Porto, Portugal-based artist Gonçalo Penas. Described by Penas as a series of "self-exorcisms", Ego De Espinhos is the cathartic outcome of a highly introspective process. Shaped by opposing forces and instincts, the LP touches on themes that are at once intimate, yet omnipresent. Splendor confronts destruction; id confronts super-ego. Created solely with digital instruments designed and built by the artist, Ego De Espinhos is the result of Penas's improvisations. Tracks such as "Introdução, Umbigo" and "Tecto Falso" were recorded in one take, and evidence a stark, dramatic emotional palette. The release begins as Penas chooses to reject rigidities, customs, and conventions of experimental electronic music. Of his process, Penas says: "Personally, I feel that creation should come from a completely free act of will. It is a place where there should be no rules, no expectations, no rights and no wrongs." In Ego De Espinhos, Penas turns away from his own technical background, and towards a journey of forward experimentation. This follows his education in Music Production and Technologies at Porto's School of Music and Performing Arts. For the first time, he finds the freedom to articulate himself sincerely, unearthing beauty and acceptance amidst wreckage and devastation.

ENTREPRENEURS, THE Noise & Romance LP
LP version. The debut album by Copenhagen-based noise rockers The Entrepreneurs is a potent exploration of modern rock. Noise & Romance is a lavish experience from start to finish. It ranges from the '90s inspired grunge- and post rock-inspired song "Session 1", through the epic noise-guitar filled "Be Mine", to the finger-picking, singer-songwriter gem "Morning Son". All-in-all, Noise & Romance is equally hard-hitting, experimental, and emotional. Jonas Wetterslev, Anders Hvass, and Mathias Bertelsen have grown into an intriguing alternative rock-band with huge potential. The trio enjoy a reputation as one of the fiercest live bands in Denmark, and with their debut album they're ready to take on the world.

MONTEVIDEO Temperplane CD
Don't even try to find the meaning of Temperplane in the Webster. The word is the fruit of Jean Waterlot's imagination, an attempt to capture the momentum that lead to the release of the third album of his band Montevideo: a fantasized plane that would allow you to fly through various degrees of emotion, from where you could observe our planet Earth from above, far above. Nonetheless it's a more conventional plane that Montevideo took to record those eight songs, heading to New York to work with Joakim who established his Crowdspacer studio in Brooklyn a few years ago. The band decided to extend the fruitful collaboration with the French producer started on their second LP Personal Space in 2012. So fruitful that they also signed the record to Joakim's label, Tigersushi. After exploring more synth heavy, discoid vibes on Personal Space, Montevideo are coming back to their indie roots here, a rawer energy, without abandoning their ambition to keep your feet dancing. Here, their "psychedelic dance" vision takes on the challenge of dressing up the Beach Boys with the baggy jeans of the Happy Mondays, bringing the Pacific Ocean breeze to Manchester, spreading complex vocal harmonies all over the dancefloor. Between the band and Joakim, the communication is fluid and effortless. Like Andrew Weatherall or Erol Alkan, the studio sorcerer seamlessly mixed dance and rock acting as a producer from the recording to the mixing, beefing up the beats, adding the right samples where they were needed. "With his extensive knowledge of electronic music, Joakim filtered our ideas through the processing of his machines" says Jean. Because of their pop influences and the melting pot of cultures present in Brussels, English remains their language of choice when it comes to singing, like when they describe this "Fun House", a nightly place to lose yourself, even scarier than The Stooges' one. The song starts like Fad Gadget and ends like The Charlatans, like a tribute to the historical bond between Belgium and British pop music that dates back to the '80s (think Factory Benelux or Les Disques Du Crepuscule). Montevideo's dance-pop crossover sometimes evokes the psychedelic fumes of the Beta Band or Django Django, before taking a romantic new wave stroll in Brooklyn ("Sutton Street") or heading straight to the club ("Calypso"). Artwork by legendary studio H5.

NKISI 7 Directions LP
NON Worldwide co-founder Nkisi rolls out an instant modern classic with 7 Directions for UIQ. A masterful debut album informed by African cosmology and Congolese rhythms, it's aesthetically comparable with music ranging from Æ's Incunabula to The Connection Machine's Painless, Lee Gamble hyperprisms and William Bennett's Cut Hands, but ultimately it's peerless in the (hyper)modern field. Specifically referencing the writings of Kongo scholar Dr Kimbwandende Kia Bunseki Fu-Kiau and the African cosmology of the Bantu-Kongo, 7 Directions is offered as a gateway to hallucinatory mind states via aerobic mysticism. Ultimately it is focused on the idea that rhythm has the capacity to modulate and experiment with conditions of perception, and to disrupt predetermined expectations, and does so in the belief that new movements of energy can determine collective behavior and generate new possibilities for knowledge production and dissemination - perhaps even supposing rhythm's potential for premonitory pattern recognition. Nkisi's notions about dance music's relate to its potential for transferring and conveying energy, both negative/ecstatic and abstract/intuitive, so it's a rare pleasure to hear her limn those ideas so beautifully, effectively and open-endedly through 7 Directions. In each part she inimitably unlocks and retunes the body's rhythmic anticipation with breathless batteries of incredible polyrhythms that arguably make the majority of Western dance styles sound like rote line dance music for folk with little imagination in their bones. In each direction Nkisi's drums writhe and rattle in a simultaneously ancient/futuristic style - ancient because they explicitly reference percussive traditions older than Western civilization, and futuristic because they've never been presented in this way before, alloyed with cosmic synth pads that draw lines from Detroit to the Lowlands and back to the source, way out in the cosmos. But rather than closed systems for study and analysis, Nkisi's tracks feel like living, bristling organisms or virulent systems that only become activated with user participation, where those ideas can begin to take root, grow and mutate via kinesis. Even if one doesn't dance in public and saves 7 Directions for the living room/bedroom/holosphere, listeners will get the best out of this album by putting something in themselves, by shutting their eyes and dancing with it. MASONNA Open Your Cunt LP
Cascades of electronic noise, a psychedelic touch, and vocal belching mixed together constitute the ingredients of Mademoiselle Anne Sanglante Ou Notre Nymphomanie Auréolé, the double-barreled name for Masonna. Maso Yamazaki founded his project in 1987, with a charismatic and glamorous personality who become a cult figure in "Japanoise" scene. Predating the era of digital domination, there was a time where artist-run labels putting out primarily, if not exclusively, tapes were legion: Toshiji Mikawa's own Pariah Tapes, Masami Akita's ZSF Produkt, Koji Tano's MSBR Records, Akifumi Nakajima's G.R.O.S.S., Hiroshi Hasegawa's Endorphine Factory, and Maso Yamazaki's Coquette are just a few examples from Japan alone. Masonna's abundant productions on his own legendary and astonishing label were presented in very limited edition, sometime totally confidential (one sole copy), and reflect his predilection for '60s psychedelic music revisited in its own very peculiar way. Mystic Another Selection Of Nurse's Naked Anthology is known for his very abrasive harsh noise that's mostly made up of lots of distorted screaming and Open Your Cunt definitely has tons of that. This early work is not released on Coquette, but on two other fabulous Japanese labels: Beast 666 Tapes in 1989 and Vanilla Records in 1990 in limited quantities. Tape is very loud, noisy, and has lots of angry energy. The distortion and effects on the vocals are top notch, they in combination with his awesome screaming create a complete audio assault. These eleven songs focus an electrically overcharged universe, punctuating the electric and vocal sonorous power with some quite moments and brief interruptions, conferring a very particular dynamic to these tracks. Reissued for the first time, the record has been pressed on 140 gram vinyl with black label and black inner sleeve; comes in a deluxe silver silkscreen on black cardboard sleeve; Edition of 199.

INCAPACITANTS I, Residuum LP
Incapacitants are the best noise band to ever come out of Japan. The group was formed in 1981 in Osaka, as the solo project of Toshiji Mikawa, a member of the amazing noise group Hijokaidan. Mikawa, a bank employee, later moved to Tokyo, where he joined with government office worker Fumio Kosakai (also an occasional member of Hijokaidan, as well as a former member of C.C.C.C.) to make Incapacitants a duo. Toshiji Mikawa and Fumio Kosakai are no ordinary salarymen, though. They've been making some of the most unremittingly ear-shattering racket for decades as Incapacitants, one of the most significant noise outfits to emerge from the groundbreaking Japanese scene in the early 1980s, and still one of the most radical and powerful. They've consistently been responsible for some of the most complex, chaotic, loud, and downright fun releases in the genre. The holy grail comes with I, Residuum, a devastating release from 1997, whose sound is particularly impressive, painfully dense and full of detail -- there's very little air to breathe here. It's basically an Incapacitants all-in-one featuring the trademark frenzy, exciting psychedelics and sonic bulldoze, all sounding crystal clear. Just pure, unadulterated electronic distortion of the highest quality done by two of the masters who have ever turned the knob on a distortion pedal that is fun, terrifying, hypnotic and fascinating all at the same time; their noise takes root not in violence or gimmickry, but in pure energy. Incapacitants create inexhaustible chaos verging on the sublime, and take you on a truly excruciating journey toward catharsis. This is truly the spirit of noise: no macho posturing, no pseudo-intellectualism, no "rocking out", no pretense! Reissued for the first time in vinyl, the record has been pressed on 140 gram vinyl with black label and black inner sleeve; comes in a deluxe silver silkscreen on black cardboard sleeve; Edition of 199.

DAVIS, BETTY This Is It! 2LP
2019 repress; double LP version. 2005 release. The former wife of Miles, Betty Mabry Davis is perhaps the only woman in the world who could rightfully have the following legend tattooed across her rear: THIS ASS INVENTED FUSION. While their marriage only lasted a year (1968-1969), Betty pointed the way to Miles, introducing him to the musical and material gods of revolutionary style: Jimi Hendrix and Sly Stone, which would have an enormous impact on his electrified musical Frankenfusion masterpiece known as Bitches Brew. Betty ruled as the mentor-muse for the original man and his music. She was a woman with the strength of a Black Panther, a "nasty" woman in total control, but unfortunately for Betty, America was not yet ready to embrace a woman with such an explicitly sexual persona. She had a much rougher edge to her music than other female funk and soul artists of the '70s. Betty Davis' is one of the most extreme sounding debut records of the decade, which just like Bitches Brew takes equal parts inspiration from Hendrix and Sly. One critic aptly described their sound as something like a cross between Tina Turner, Funkadelic, and Sly & The Family Stone. Add the futurist fashion sense of David Bowie, and the flair of Miles Davis, and you have quite a cocktail. This is the best of Betty Davis' three much-sought albums.

BATAAN, JOE Call My Name LP
Repressed. "This whole project grew out of a song called 'Cycles Of You', which I had written around 2000-2001 with the guitarist and bassist of my band at the time, Easy. The chord progression and vocal melody really reminded me of Joe Bataan, and it occurred to me that it wouldn't be impossible to get him into the studio to do a guest vocal if we ever recorded it. I had met Bataan a few years before at Nuyorican Poets Cafe in my neighborhood. Around this time Bataan was playing out again, so I went to the show to see him and find out if he'd be interested in doing some vocals with us. He was agreeable, so we decided to turn it into a Joe Bataan session and do 'Cycles Of You'. When I got the opportunity from Vampisoul to do a full album, I was hoping Bataan and I could write some songs together, but our schedules proved tough to coordinate. I figured the best way to go about it was to do most of the work and just have him come sing on it. The rhythm section was a band called TransLove Airways that I formed in 2002. To this core group I added pieces from a few other local bands: The Middle Initials, who are a great Temptations/Main Ingredient-style vocal group, and members of an incredible Latin band called Grupo Latin Vibe, who were responsible for almost all the percussion and the vibraphone solo on 'I'm The Fool Pt. 2'. There was also some fine trombone playing by Aaron Johnson of Antibalas and great flute work by Neal Sugarman and my cousin Sonny. Preparing for Call My Name, I listened to a lot of different records from the mid to late '70s. It has now been over ten years since the completion of this record, and so much has changed. The Call My Name sessions took place when Daptone had just moved to Bushwick, its now-famous current location. Gabe Roth was my first call whenever I had any recording to do. He was yet to become the legendary figure at the center of the Daptone/Truth & Soul universe. He was just a humble guy with an incredible talent and an impeccable ear who made authentic sounding records with inexpensive analog gear." -- Daniel Collás, producer of Call My Name

DUVAL Y EL NUEVO RITMO DE BOBBY REY, TITA Cumbias Internacionales LP
"Arguably the strangest (yet coolest) concept record in the Discos Fuentes catalog, this compendium of trippy tropical madness masquerading as "international" cumbias features the venerable Argentinian showbiz couple Tita Duval and Roberto Rey. Dominga Salazar Azula (1924-2008), aka Tita Duval, was an Argentinian-born accordionist, saxophonist, and singer based in Medellín, Colombia. She was also enamored of the tropical genres from Colombia's coastal regions; she was equally lauded for her abilities interpreting both her native tango as well as the cumbia of her immigrant home, a skill perhaps as unprecedented and unique as it was improbable. Recorded with her husband Rey (Adán Azula), the well-known Argentinian music impresario who had also emigrated to Colombia, Cumbias Internacionales was an attempt to fuse hippie pop sensibilities with the tropical music for which Duval was famous. The album combines a mix of Afro rhythms, social commentary, and psychedelic instrumentation such as the electric Varitone sax, echo-drenched flute, Mellotron, and spacey organ, which transport the proceedings to another level. The record starts out innocently enough with the thoroughly Colombian "Oye Mi Cumbia", albeit with a processed electronic reed section, but the tunes get weirder from there with "Safari, Safari", pseudo-psychedelic disco-Afrobeat cumbia with heavily-accented English lyrics. The amazingness continues with "The Poor man" ('El Hombre Pobre') fighting for justice, over a loping reggae/porro hybrid, with drum breaks bringing to mind American funk! This is followed by a boogaloo, "Zombie Rock". The side finishes out with a jam of epic proportions that has to be heard to be believed; it morphs into another mix of cumbia and soul, complete with Stax horns stabs. Side B kicks off with, the thumping Afro-funk burner "Batukacuto"? with a floating pied-piper flute. Tita Duval herself brings us back to Earth with "Cumbia mujer", which she sings in a sweet voice. Then comes surely the weirdest version of "My Way" featuring Tita's echo-drenched warbling. We end on an up note with the most traditional-sounding tune, "Claudia." Which combines cumbia lyrics and costeño-style clarinet with merengue beats and Varitone; indescribably delicious. A satisfying trip to be sure, but still a head-scratcher. In retrospect, the album is a hip, exotic, experimental Afro-psychedelic brew that's even more mind-blowing when you consider Duval was 50 and her husband 60 at the time it was recorded." --Pablo Yglesias aka DJ Bongohead. MELODIA, LUIZ Maravilhas Contemporaneas LP
Vinilisssimo presents a first vinyl reissue of Luiz Melodia's Maravilhas Contemporâneas, originally released in 1976. Often overlooked, Maravilhas Contemporâneas is one of the greatest Brazilian albums of all time and one of the finest recordings released on Som Livre. To listen to Luiz Melodia singing is to understand that his music escapes any attempt at labeling. Obviously, the Brazilian music tradition is very present on this record but Melodia's rhythmic sense when using his vocal skills also brings it close to funk or jazz, an idea that is reinforced through the explosive brass arrangements that pervade the whole album. Melodia's first album, Pérola Negra (1973) had featured the outstanding arrangements of Arthur Verocai and the performance of top musicians Hyldon and Meirelles, but Maravilhas Contemporâneas stands as another essential milestone in his career and further proof of his formidable talent. One of the tracks included here, "Juventude Trasviada", was featured in the soundtrack of a popular Brazilian soap opera, Pecado Capital, boosting the artist's increasing popularity. The creative freedom and the wide range of influences managed by Melodia reach their peak in "Baby Rose", a song that evolves from cosmic psychedelia, including the sounds of the sitar, to the peaceful beauty of some kind of highly tuneful samba funk. "Questão De Posse" features fierce proggy guitars while "Veleiro Azul" adds Latin rhythms into this unique recipe, but again, it is the talented voice of Melodia what grants this recording a pass to another league. Maravilhas Contemporâneas deserves to be filed next to the finest albums by Caetano Veloso, Jorge Ben, or Gilberto Gil. This superb album combines the best of Brazil's musical tradition with jazz, funk and gentle psychedelia and is fronted by Melodia's outstanding vocal skills. Presented in facsimile artwork and pressed on 180 gram vinyl.
