VA Two Tribes CD
"European music culture has never been closed, on the contrary -- it has always integrated influences from all other parts of the world. Two Tribes makes an effort to give insight in how musicians living in Europe today incorporate and transfer musical traditions particularly from the African continent into their own oeuvre. Featured on Two Tribes are a broad range of constellations, ranging from musicians with roots in African countries who reside in Europe to collaborations between European and African artists. Musically our compilation tries to capture at least a part of the enormous diversity that contemporary music from Europe of this kind has to offer. The spectrum ranges from classical 'songs' using traditional instruments from both continents to electronic productions that combine musical heritage with current club culture. Our selection can only be a musical snapshot since there is so much movement in this genre at the moment. As you can hopefully see and hear, the leitmotif while compiling Two Tribes was to keep an eye on the ease of handling different cultural influences amongst the featured artists. It was important to us that the included music doesn´t just copy African music styles one to one but has an own handwriting and builds a bridge between the musical legacy of both continents. With all the track included, we have found a number of great examples and decided to showcase twelve of them on this first volume. The music included refers to the musical traditions of Senegal, Kenya, Nigeria, Ivory Coast, Ethiopia, Morocco, Zimbabwe and South Africa amongst others. The involved musicians are spread all over Europe, from Finland to Great Britain, Italy, England, France and Portugal to Germany. Be it organic or electronic music, we think that all of the tracks really deserve your ear!" --Tobi Kirsch and Ubbo Gronewold, June 2018

LEWIS, HERSCHELL GORDON Color Me Blood Red BLU-RAY
"For the third and final instalment in his infamous 'Blood Trilogy', Color Me Blood Red, splatter movie pioneer Herschell Gordon Lewis turned to the world of fine art for this tortured tale of a troubled artist turned homicidal maniac. Painter Adam Sorge has found himself in a bit of a creative lull. But when his girlfriend accidentally cuts her finger, he realizes what his work has been missing all this time -- human blood! With pressure mounting from local gallery owner Farnsworth to deliver his next masterpiece, Adam sets about procuring as much glorious hemoglobin as he can muster -- first from himself, and then from anyone unfortunate enough to pass by his sickening studio of slaughter. The final filmic collaboration between H.G. Lewis and producer/master exploiter David F. Friedman, who collectively delivered the equally demented Blood Feast and Two Thousand Maniacs!, Color Me Blood Red is a crazed creation that truly puts the pain in painting."

DEAD C, THE Rare Ravers CD
"Disguised as the meandering outpourings of vacant thought and activity dialed simultaneously from zero and ten. Formed in the cauldron of a fevered mistake resolute. Surrounded by ignorance, dis-interest, and the attention of the carefully self-selected. Recorded and burned through a thousand galaxies of dust and doubt and endless infinite wonder, transforming both time and space. Forever exiled to the very bottom of the world to reflect on the struggling desperate pile above. Recognizing any contribution as miniscule and insignificant when placed within the greatness of the other, the dominant insolent preening satisfied, continually shouting the pre-eminence of the first world order. The latest by The Dead C -- Rare Ravers: it's a long player."

TINY RUINS Olympic Girls LP
LP version. "A rare blend of eloquent lyrical craft and explorative musicianship, the songs of Tiny Ruins are etched into the memories of crowds and critics worldwide. Traversing influences that cross genre and era, the artistry of Hollie Fullbrook and her band spans delicate folk, lustrous dream pop and ebullient psychedelia. Building on the sparse arrangements and 'a novelist's eye for detail' (Uncut) cultivated over the past several years, the group's greatly anticipated third album Olympic Girls is replete with vital lyricism and galvanizing rhythms. Sparkling electric guitar jangles pull against the unique thrum of Fullbrook's acoustic as the cryptic poetry she is known for rings out. Hollie Fullbrook is no stranger to acclaim. Debut album Some Were Meant For Sea (2011) saw her name on billboards, playlists and blogs worldwide. The album's clutch of 'gorgeous vignettes' (BBC) put the artist on the map. Second album Brightly Painted One earned more accolades, championed by The New York Times, NPR and David Lynch, and winning Best Alternative Album at the New Zealand Music Awards in 2014. 'An album of quiet, devastating beauty', wrote Pop Matters. The album saw Fullbrook join forces with producer Tom Healy, whom, alongside long-time tour-mate bassist Cass Basil and drummer Alex Freer, Fullbrook has worked and toured with ever since. While spanning continents, the band won fans in critics, crowds and became a sought-after collaborator. A New York recording session culminated in the EP Hurtling Through (2015) with indie-rock legend Hamish Kilgour (The Clean), while 2016 single 'Dream Wave' was recorded and produced by award-winning cult filmmaker and musician David Lynch. Headhunted by Lorde for the Hunger Games soundtrack blueprint she curated, Fullbrook teamed up with legendary filmmaker Lynch for the collaboration. This album was made over a drawn out period of spontaneity and experimentation, stridently reaching beyond Fullbrook's formerly minimalist domain. Production from Tom Healy and Fullbrook is exercised with muscular aplomb; marrying the intricately woven poetics of Leonard Cohen, the shimmering dream-pop landscapes of Beach House or Mazzy Star, and the off-kilter experimental pop of Broadcast or John Cale."

XOSAR The Possessor Possesses Nothing 2LP
"In The Possessor Possesses Nothing Xosar tells the story of a tonal mutation. A montage of attractions. A straddled comment on organ systems. This album is a play. Broken chords suffocate in waves and get back on the scene. 'Trying to control the world? I see you won't succeed. T'ien hsia shen ch'i The world is a spiritual vessel And cannot be controlled. Those who control, fail. Those who grasp, lose. Some go forth, some are led, Some weep, some blow flutes, Some become strong, some superfluous, Some oppress, some are destroyed. Therefore the Sage Casts off extremes, Casts off excess, Casts off extravagance.' Xosar cites the above passage from the Dao as a key point of inspiration for her new album The Possessor Possesses Nothing and it's a more than apt bit of poetic philosophy, given that her album is about one girl's quest to liberate herself from oppressive forces. The making of the record was for her an 'exercise in decisiveness, action and liberation.' This is music making in part as self-therapy -- with Xosar cleansing herself 'from my own fears' and embracing 'self-acceptance, self-trust, responsibility for oneself.' But the music was also created under a state of 'optimistic nihilism' aimed directly at "anti-perfectionism, anti-elitism, anti-censorship and anti-fear based programming.' Xosar aiming not only to liberate herself and her creative process from internal restraints but her listeners from external restraints too. It's telling then that she found herself experiencing 'the feeling of being a kid again and allowing pure expression to flow.' These are heady and brave ideals -- part of a long series of varied investigations Xosar has been putting herself through not only as a musician but simply in life. She draws from research into the ideas of Alchemy, Magick, Kundalini Yoga, Fractals, DNA Structure, the Golden Ratio, Biofeedback, Quasicrystals, Visualizing higher dimensions, The Human Energy Field, Psychedelic Medicine, Stand Up Comedy, Sound Healing and much more. Hardly your everyday techno producer, then. The Possessor Possesses Nothing somehow takes all these ongoing themes and turns them into a whole. Clear your mind, open your ears wide and prepare for a wild trip ahead."

STATION 17 Ausblick CD
One of the greatest things about pop music is that rules can be summarily ignored. Ninety-nine times out a hundred, however, there is a tendency to stick to those very same rules, failing to break the chains of market forces or stem the tide of expectations. Whatever. Station 17 are not amongst those who follow well-trodden paths. This band, all too often referred to as a "project", can look back on a richer history than most, amassed over thirty years. To mark this anniversary, a new album entitled Ausblick is set to appear alongside a retrospective, Werkschau (BB 315CD/LP). The new record is a twin of sorts to Blick (BB 285CD/LP, BB 298LTD-LP, 2018): a collection of exciting collaborations. Created in a remote studio in the tranquil environs of Niebüll, northern Germany. From kraut legends such as Günter Schickert and faUSt to the friendly countenances of electronically inclined musicians like Schneider TM and Ulrich Schnauss, all the players have one thing in common: they have seamlessly aligned themselves with the production and composition techniques of Station 17, embracing the spontaneity of the situation here and now rather than seeking to impose their own methodology on proceedings. "The town is a blur before your eyes" ("Die Stadt verschwimmt vor dem Gesicht") is one line on "The Midday Sun Freezes" ("Die Mittagssonne Friert") and it is astounding to note how similar the images evoked by the music are to the images painted in the supremely intelligent lyrics, bordering on the wise. Directness is at the heart of Ausblick, a light-hearted obfuscation of distance which works equally well in doped up dubs and out-there krautish electro tracks. The inobtrusive sounds never feel forced. Everything flows, yet every song stands on its own -- as an agent of experimentation and pop, of aimlessness and barely articulable precision. Only a band who know exactly what they are doing are capable of such feats. Ausblick features Pyrolator, Günter Schickert & Schneider TM, faUSt, Datashock, Harald Grosskopf & Eberhard Kranemann, Andreas Dorau, Andreas Spechtl, Ulrich Schnauss, and Günter Schickert.

STATION 17 Werkschau CD
Anyone who has followed the progress of Station 17 over the past three decades will know: the only constant in this band is change. Evolving, stretching musical parameters, testing limits -- these are the guiding principles of the band founded in 1988 by a group of mentally handicapped residents -- Wohngruppe 17 -- in Hamburg. Kai Boysen, an independent musician working with them as a curative teacher, started up the collective as a creative and social project, the first of its kind in the alternative music scene to bring together musicians with and without disabilities. Eleven official albums (if you count two remix albums) have been released since then. Over the years, Station 17 have increasingly emancipated themselves from the basic idea of a socio-creative project and advanced to the status of an internationally acclaimed combo in the experimental indie rock sector, conjuring up their own mix of electronic, krautrock, disco, noise, and pop. This long and emotional journey has seen the collective play more than 800 concerts all over Europe. Two extensive documentaries have presented their story on screen. The roll call of renowned guests and collaborators includes Holger Czukay, Fettes Brot, Gudrun Gut, Andreas Dorau, DJ Koze, and Die Toten Hosen, to name just a few. The anniversary compilation Werkschau offers a wonderful introduction to the cosmos of these pioneers of inclusive music production.

LONG RYDERS, THE Psychedelic Country Soul 2LP
"The founders of alt-country, The Long Ryders, release their first new album in over thirty years on February 15 2019 when Psychedelic Country Soul hits the airwaves and enters the shops. Featuring the classic line-up of Sid Griffin, Stephen McCarthy, Tom Stevens and Greg Sowders, it makes the day after Valentine's Day as much a romantic celebration. The stunning new album follows hot on the heels of the deluxe reissue treatment given to two classic Long Ryders long players, State of Our Union and Two-Fisted Tales. Featuring eleven new Long Ryders compositions and a tribute cover of the late great Tom Petty's song 'Walls', this is a Long Ryders for the 21st century; kicking off with the anthemic 'Greenville', a track which proves the band haven't lost any of that magic guitar interplay. 'Molly Somebody' is an eclectic pop tune that doesn't neglect any of their country and rock sensibilities, while the likes of 'What the Eagle Sees' reflects the energy of early punk and power pop that so informed them in the early days. You can still hear their personal connection with the music of the 1960s', but as ever The Long Ryders aren't a band who live in the past. Album closer 'Psychedelic Country Soul' is the greatest testament to that, performed like the previous 11 songs, with precision and fire; the guitars weave and harmonicas build and ebb, the song spreading like wildfire. The Long Ryders have always been celebrated for what they have to say as much as the music they make. With Psychedelic Country Soul their message delivered with 12 strings and never-ending harmonies has never been clearer."

FRED UND LUNA Im Tiefenrausch CD
A mesmerizing trip from Krautland through electronic fields to hypnotonia, exploring the textures of haunting melodies, luscious dreamscapes and tribal, dancefloor-ready beats. After their highly acclaimed debut album Im Klanggarten (2017) (on Bigamo, the label of Frank Wiedemann and Ame), Im Tiefenrausch is Fred Und Luna's next fascinating step in their Elektrokraut/Krautelektro series. Who are Fred Und Luna? Fred Und Luna are two mannequins living in a fashion boutique in Karlsruhe, Germany. They serve as muse for musician, lector, poet and photo/video maker Rainer Buchmüller. Inspired by his doll friends and his love for German electronic music of the past decades, Buchmüller under the alias "Fred Und Luna" produces his self-created genres Elektrokraut and Krautelektro: both a modern combination of repetitive rhythms, beautiful melodies, electronic soundscapes and elements from the krautrock era. Under the name of Ariston Baton, Buchmüller also writes and performs sound poems and concrete poetry. At live events and especially at exhibitions, Ariston Baton joins "Fred Und Luna" and Buchmüller's third identity Vizudaru Nono, who contributes video and photo projections. Together they form the so-called Equipe Nadaphysique. The next exhibition featuring all three named personalities will take place end of October 2018 at Rockomotives Festival in Vendôme, France. A brief history of Fred Und Luna Having previously released the EP Glück Auf (OM 034EP, 2016) on the Scottish label Optimo Music and being remixed by Prins Thomas for the Berlin label Innervisions, the year 2017 saw Fred Und Luna feature their debut album Im Klanggarten on Frank Wiedemann's (Âme, Howling) newly-founded label Bigamo Musik. After the first editions of both the EP and LP both sold out quickly, live shows in Germany, France and England followed as well as remixes for Peter Pardeike (Connaisseur Recordings) and a common release with Trikk on Innervisions, among others. A team-up with Achim Treu (UFO Hawaii) resulted in several remixes for international musicians.

TIPPETT/LINO CAPRA VACCINA/PAOLO TOFANI, KEITH & JULIE A Mid Autumn Night's Dream LP
LP version. Another true masterpiece. A Mid Autumn Night's Dream faithfully report a one-shot concert that took place at Conservatorio Nicolini in Piacenza on October 1st, 2016. The four giants of new music never played together before: Keith Tippett, Julie Tippetts, Lino Capra Vaccina, and Paolo Tofani. As the lights turned off something magic started. A spontaneous interplay, an amazing flowing of notes. The subject was the night, its mystic flavors. Paolo Tofani, now a Hindi monk, is a living legend in Italian avantgarde music having been the driving force of the band Area in the seventies. He worked and recorded with many musicians including John Cage, Alvin Curran, Steve Lacy, just to mention a few. His last album, Real Essence (2015), an acoustic solo album, impressed the late Greg Lake who eventually wrote the liner notes. Lino Capra Vaccina provided the visionary sound of the seminal Italian ensemble Aktuala then formed the legendary Telaio Magnetico with Franco Battiato and Juri Camisasca, and later played percussion in La Scala Orchestra with Claudio Abbado. In Italy he is a true legend and a respected musician. His first solo album, Antico Adagio (DS 027-1LP/027CD) along with his last one Metafisiche del Suono (DCLP 002CD/LP), are considered amongst the very best avant garde albums ever. Keith Tippett is another living legend in British jazz music -- band leader, composer, and visionary pianist -- with an uncompromising career full of outstanding gems. A larger audience knows him as a member of King Crimson or the leader of Centipede. His skills go from contemporary jazz to larger compositions for orchestra and classical music as well. One of his latest piano solo album, Mujician IV live in Piacenza, has been critically acclaimed all over the world. Julie Tippetts lent her fantastic voice to various situations, many times side by side with her husband Keith. The team called one of their duo album, Couple in Spirit (1988), as they are in life and art. Julie is a fantastic musician who added a magic touch, a siren call to this masterpiece.

NONO, LUIGI Musica Manifesto N. 1 CD
Die Schachtel present a reissue of Luigi Nono's Musica Manifesto N. 1, originally released in 1969. Long considered, with Pierre Boulez and Karlheinz Stockhausen, to be one point in the trinity of the post-war avant-garde, Luigi Nono was one of the most important and singular composers to emerge in the years following the Second World War. Nono's music infused the avant-garde with a sense of emotion and moral consciousness which had been previously unheard, seeking to join advanced forms of music in the social struggles of everyday life. Originally issued in 1969, none of Nono's works illuminate this radical consciousness and concern better than his seminal Musica-Manifesto N.1. Now reissued by Die Schachtel in collaboration with Archivo Storico Ricordi, it is a revolution led by one man, a window into the creative and political potential of sound. Nono's work was vocally political from its earliest days -- first as explicitly anti-fascist, pointedly embracing Marxism (he officially joined the Communist Party in 1952), before, as '60s and '70s unfolded, becoming a voice in the international worker and student struggles and the fight against the Vietnam War. It's hardly coincidental that a work as important and powerful as Musica-Manifesto N.1 emerged at the time it did. It is among the greatest sonic culminations of 1960s, composed and released just before the decade's end. Musica-Manifesto N.1, original intended to be the first part in a suite which never appeared, was commissioned by the communist administrated town of Chatillon-sous-Bagneux, in France, during the Spring of 1969. The work, manifesting in two parts, can be understood as snapshot of its moment -- incorporating texts taken from the walls of Paris in May, 1968, read by Edmonda Aldini against the voices of Communist leaders like Che Guevara, Ho Chi Minh, and Mao, as well as recordings of the riots and protests which occurred at the Venice Biennale in June, '68. Both sides of Musica-Mainifesto N.1, "Un Volto, Del Mare" and "Non Consumiamo Marx", are works for magnetic tape, the first archived through careful editing to achieve a singular polyphonic complexity, while the second utilizes manipulation of its source material through filters and modulators, played against electronically generated sounds. The cumulative result remains a legendary culmination of avant-garde practice and political struggle. Features a tabloid/poster with texts by Veniero Rizzardi and unpublished photos of the 1968 Venice Biennale riots.

DONAGGIO, PINO Don Camillo CD
In a small village in Emilia, pastor Don Camillo (Terence Hill) and Communist Mayor Peppone (Colin Blakely) are from opposing political factions and are invaluable friend/enemies. They clash at every opportunity, which often ends up in a fight -- as in the case of the football game played by teams which they had trained. Obviously, the mayor is not happy with Don Camillo's behavior and threatens to transfer him to a remote mountain village. This is a remake of the movie Don Camillo (1952) by Julien Duvivier. It was Terence Hill's first time behind the camera and he wanted to make the action between Don Camillo and Peppone take on a more modern feel, which better suited his style. The story is set in recent times, with a sportier priest (he skates in the church), and embellished with classic fist-fights (as in the football game scene). There are also some small cameos by famous Italian ex-footballers, including Roberto Boninsegna, Roberto Pruzzo, Luciano Spinosi, and Carlo Ancelotti. Ancelotti was a soccer player for A.S. Roma and former coach of teams such as Juventus, Milan, Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain, and Real Madrid. He is now the current coach of Bayern Munich. Music by Pino Donaggio; Conductor: Natale Massara; Producer: Roberto Danè. In this new edition Digitmovies honor the original editing of the album released in 1984 by Senso Unico.

RUSTICHELLI, CARLO Delitto Quasi Perfetto CD
Digitmovies release the first complete edition CD of Carlo Rustichelli's original soundtrack for the giallo comedy film The Almost Perfect Crime (original title: Delitto Quasi Perfetto). Carlo Rustichelli (December 25, 1916 Carpi - November 13, 2004 Rome) wrote a mysterious score of pure suspense with strings and organ pieces. The author alternates gloomy atmospheres with wild surf lounge-style music and a recurring melody with trumpets and orchestra, which you might think of as a "cousi"" to the movie Blood and Black Lace (Sei Donne Per L'assissino) directed by Mario Bava in 1964. This soundtrack also contains the hit song "E Se Domani" ("And If Tomorrow") by G. Calabrese and C.A. Rossi in an instrumental jazz-blues club version beautifully arranged by Rustichelli. C.A.M. previously released a single with two tracks specially assembled by the author using various takes. For Digitmovies' full-length CD, the label was able to access the mono master tapes from the original recording session, with Bruno Nicolai as conductor. This is another CD which can be added to the ever-growing discography of the venerated maestro Carlo Rustichelli.

DE ANGELIS, GUIDO & MAURIZIO Zorro CD
Digitmovies presents the soundtrack by brothers Guido & Maurizio De Angelis for the movie Zorro (1974). At that time a 45 rpm single was issued in Italy and in Japan, with the songs "Zorro Is Back" and "To You Mi Chica", and a vinyl album with twelve selections was issued in France, Germany and Japan and later reissued with the same contents by C.A.M. on CD in 1991. For this CD, Digitmovies uses the first generation stereo master tapes of the original recording session allowing for almost forty extra minutes of material. The De Angelis brothers have written a cheerful main theme for the masked avenger Zorro called "Zorro Is Back", introduced in the version performed by Oliver Onions in "Titoli Di Testa" and reprised in instrumental form. This motif is alternated with the love theme "To You Mi Chica" for solo guitar, orchestra, and vocal with dramatic symphonic music with Latin flavor for the heroic actions of Zorro. The bonus material contains exciting reprises of the album versions of "Zorro Is Back", "To You Mi Chica" and the dramatic background themes among which a remarkable rarity can be found: the off-vocal take of the main theme song, that is to say "karaoke" with Zorro! Edition of 300.

VA The Down Town Albums Collection 2CD
"After embarking on a career as a singer in the early 1960s, Robert Thompson aka Dandy achieved significant success on the British music scene with a series of popular ska and rock steady singles. In the summer of 1968, he proved instrumental in the launch of Trojan Records, which later in the year granted the budding singer-songwriter-producer his own Down Town subsidiary on which to showcase his work. The company's faith in Dandy's creative talents was promptly rewarded when he provided them with two of their earliest big sellers: 'Reggae In Your Jeggae' and Trojan's first official UK pop chart entry, 'Red Red Wine' by Tony Tribe. Soon after, an LP of the same title was compiled and released, with the collection comprising the hit, alongside another 11 Dandy produced tracks, lifted from his most popular Down Town singles to date. The album remained a best seller for Trojan well into 1970, when the company issued the similarly compiled Red Red Wine Volume 2, which like its predecessor proved hugely popular among UK reggae fans. Meanwhile, Dandy's work ethos was reflected in the release of an array of further 7" singles and another two long players: Blow Your Horn -- a set that largely showcasing the talents of ace trombonist Rico Rodriquez and top British reggae act, the Rudies -- and Your Musical Doctor throughout which Dandy's own vocals took centre stage. Now, at long last, all four of these historically important albums have been gathered onto this superb two-disc set, with all but Blow Your Horn making their CD debut. The result is a timely celebration of the original boss reggae style championed by first generation skinheads half a century ago!"

Down At Dawn presents a reissue of Mary Lou Williams's Black Christ of the Andes, originally issued in 1965. One of the highly regarded pieces of music by the great pianist and composer Williams, the concept behind Black Christ Of The Andes is about the ideal meeting between jazz and the spiritual, from the dark, smoky atmospheres of the Devil's music to the luminous sound of the African-American Church. A very enjoyable record made up of different materials like "Jump Blues" numbers, a cappella choral pieces and some striking piano trio cuts. All arranged and conducted by the great Melba Liston and featuring performances of jazz luminaries such as Milt Hinton, Grant Green, Percy Heath, and Williams herself.

SCIENTIST Rids the World of the Evil Curse of the Vampires LP
2019 repress; LP version. Rids the World of the Curse of the Vampires (1981) not only ably displays Scientist's varied approach, but also clocks in as one of his best outings. Scientist keeps things lively with plenty of reverb and echo-treated percussion, ghostly piano parts, video game sound effects, and other wobbly interjections from the mixing board. The record's expert evocation of the Halloween spirit also includes some fiendishly-voiced intros, the cover art's cartoon potpourri of horror film characters, and the dubious claim made in the liner notes that Scientist mixed it all at midnight on Friday the 13th. Along with Keith Hudson's Pick a Dub (1974) and Lee Perry's Blackboard Jungle Dub (1973), this is one of the essential dub albums.

SHAKESPEARE, FINLAY Domestic Economy 2LP
The playful confidence that exudes Finlay Shakespeare's practice is flagrantly laid out on Domestic Economy, his extraordinary debut full-length. Domestic Economy displays two eventful sides evidencing the unique musical approach Shakespeare has developed in such a short period of time. Let's get some facts straight, Finlay is young. And talented. His programming skills belie his years and one can detect a sharp appreciation of historical electronic pop whilst simultaneously developing a canny understanding as to where such a form exists in the current age. Shakespeare's brazen lyrical content and significant melodic prowess highlight a brave new voice in what can often be a sterile aesthetic environment. Domestic Economy bursts with edgy ecstatic electronic pop. A form not only unusual for Editions Mego (actually known for idolizing such forms) but somewhat of a scarcity amongst the modern electronic landscape. Belying age, form, and movement, Domestic Economy is a damn near perfect amalgamation of historical respect and contemporary anxiety wrapped in an exquisite song-form package. Made in Bristol. Published in Wien. Delivered to all brains, like a wayward dream. Artwork by Nik Void. All original material improvised whilst recorded live; All revisions made to pre-existing material carried out at B17, July-August 2018; All material by Finlay Shakespeare, except saxophone and clarinet on "Amsterdam" by Zoë Hutton and bugle on "Heston" by Jamie Neale. Mastered by Russell Haswell.

HARDY, FRANCOISE Francoise Hardy / Canta Per Voi In Italiano / Swinging Jazz Guitarist 3CD
"Françoise Hardy's dreamy debut album, recorded when she was just eighteen, features 'Tous Les Garçons Et Les Filles' (All The Boys And Girls), a song that was less a hit than a social phenomenon. The single sold five million copies worldwide. The public responded to Françoise' disarming naturalness; her singular, understated voice; the combination of intensity, intelligence and mystery. And the way she so effortlessly combined simplicity with sophistication. She was a breath of fresh air. Françoise' vital debut recordings are presented here alongside 'Françoise Hardy - Canta Per Voi In Italiano' (Sings For You In Italian), and complemented by an anthology of sublime instrumental jazz sessions by her friend and contemporary, Sacha Distel. In the period when these recordings were made -- before he became an international singing star -- Sacha was widely considered to be the finest jazz guitarist in France, winning many polls and recording prolifically. (Françoise would later appear as a guest on Sacha's TV show where they performed a duet, accompanied by his guitar, a beautiful version of 'Le Premier Bonheur Du Jour') The set includes historic sessions with John Lewis of the Modern Jazz Quartet, with the Belgian saxophonist/flautist Bobby Jaspar and with guitarist Jean-Pierre Sasson; Sacha's tribute to the master, the Hommage A Django EP, and the first recording of his most famous composition, 'Marina (The Good Life)' -- the million selling song which would become one of the great standards of easy listening and prove over many decades to be a signature tune for Tony Bennett. It was written originally for Roger Vadim's contribution to the 'L'orgueil (Pride)' chapter of the portmanteau film, 'Les sept péchés capitaux (The Seven Deadly Sins)'; the sequence appearing alongside sketches by Godard, Chabrol and Demy."

CONTI, IVAN MAMAO Poison Fruit LP
LP version. Includes download code. From an artist in their seventies, you probably wouldn't expect to hear an album like this. But Brazilian drumming legend Ivan "Mamão" Conti has been experimenting and innovating for the last half a century. As one third of cult Rio jazz-funk trio Azymuth, Mamão was at the root of the group's "samba doido" (crazy samba) philosophy, which warped the traditional samba compass with jazz influences and space age electronics. Even with his lesser-known jovem guarda group The Youngsters, Mamão was experimenting with tapes and delays to create unique, ahead-of-its-time sounds, way back in the sixties. More recently Mamão recorded an album with hip-hop royalty Madlib under the shared moniker Jackson Conti. With his first album in over twenty years, and the first to be released on vinyl since his 1984 classic The Human Factor, Mamão shares his zany carioca character across eleven tracks of roots-y electronic samba and tripped-out jazz, beats, and dance music. Featuring Alex Malheiros and Kiko Continentino on a number of tracks, the Azymuth lifeblood runs deep, but venturing into the modern discotheque (as Mamão would call it), Poison Fruit also experiments with sounds more commonly associated with house and techno, with the help of London-based producer Daniel Maunick (aka Dokta Venom) and Mamão's son Thiago Maranhão. Take a bite of Mamão's psychoactive papaya and join the maestro on a weird and wonderful stroll through the Brazilian jungle.

MY CAT IS AN ALIEN ATP: Nightmare Before Christmas 2006 Curated by Thurston Moore LP
"The 2006 Nightmare Before Christmas festival was one of the most bodacious assemblages of raw human talent assembled on our planet since the First Continental Congress. But it wasn't all just guys and it wasn't all just proto-Americans, so that means it was far better than any other such gathering before and/or after. One of the crazier highlights of the weekend-long event was the set by Italy's insane fraternal duo, My Cat Is An Alien. Using guitars and various other kaboobs, the Opalio boys set Red's (aka Stage 2) on fire that Sunday night, blasting out zoned croaks, wobbly drones and the kind of blabbermouth logic you usually can't access without written permission from a doctor. There were many ecstatic musical yawps during that long-ago weekend, but MCIAA's set left a deep groove in my memory. And it's a stone pleasure to revisit it after lo, these many years. Two blurts of side-ling mystery, packed in Roberto Opalio's wonderful art, with a little liner note booklet that can only hint at what you may have missed. Thankfully, if you slap on the disc, close your eyes and sniff a can of beer while lying down, you can approximate the whirling thrill ride of the set itself. And sometimes an approximation is both closer to home and more comfortable than an actual experience. So, yeah -- you're welcome!" --Byron Coley, 2019

CHADBOURNE, EUGENE Solo Guitar Volume 2-1/3 LP
"Eugene Chadbourne is one of the great guitar players of the modern era. At the time he began recording in Canada in 1975, his music was a unique syncretic formulation. While its most obvious component was free improvisation in a style then most widely associated with English and European players, his music also contained elements of jazz, country, folk, blues, psychedelic and international sounds, referencing these threads in ways that were so diverse and intensely personalized it would take scholars decades to decode them. Volume 2-1/3 is the second of four LPs devoted to documenting some of the music Dr. Chadbourne was creating during the years he was based in the provinces of Canada, while avoiding the conscriptive powers of Richard Nixon and his ilk. Exact details of the recordings are unknown, but that's trivial. There are six tracks of improvisational guitar madness at its most glorious. Describing them is almost impossible, but I can at least tell you their names 'Piazza del Duomo', 'Preperation Dimafbay' (sic), 'Father (You Opened)', 'That's All Water Under the Bridge' (purported to be the first lesson of a proposed guitar instructional record, which is a fairly brain-searing concept) and 'Rocket!' (which is a different take of the Oliver Lake classic first recorded on Volume Two). This last one might be my fave Chadbourne acoustic piece ever. Maybe yours too! If not, just give this a spin and let us know your favorite. Maybe you'll win a button. Solo Guitar Volume 2-1/3 is even more amazing than the last one, in our opinion. And there's more to come!" --Byron Coley, 2019 Edition of 400.

FUNKE, MAXINE Silk LP
2019 repress, gold vinyl! "Silk is the fantastic third LP by Maxine Funke, a New Zealand musician whose first recordings were with the legendary $100 Band (Funke, Alastair Galbraith, and Mike Dooley!), whose music was drifting experimental dust of a very high order. Maxine's first two solo albums, Lace (2008) and Felt (2012) (originally released as CDR on Galbraith's Next Best Way and a lathe on Epic Sweep, respectively), were reissued by Time-Lag to great acclaim in 2016, securing her place in the upper echelons of contemporary folk inventors. With the release of Silk, Ms. Funke manages to create an album that merges both of these style threads. Many of the tracks are cast in an intimate mood congruent with artists like Sibylle Baier, Barbara Manning, Myriam Gendron, Joanne Robertson, and other women who have pulled sweetly dark sounds from pockets of deep emotion, abetted largely by acoustic guitar. On a few other tracks, electronic instrumentals hearken back to her work with transceivers in the $100 Band days. The balance between these posts is delicately intoxicating. A readymade classic from start to finish, Silk travels a brilliant series of spaceways with grace and assurance. We should all be so lucky." --Byron Coley, 2018.

WORTHLESS The Cave LP
"We were first made aware of this Brooklyn band by Gary Panter. When we asked Gary about some specific projectors for light shows, he said we'd be best off conferring with his colleague, Curtis Godino. And oh yeah, Curtis also helmed a dastardly psychedelic music unit called Worthless. Checking out some of Worthless's previous recordings for Beyond Is Beyond, Stupid Head, and Greenway, we were struck by the weirdness and seamlessness of their psych stretching; if ever there was music made for light shows, this was pretty much it. The Cave is Worthless' third vinyl LP and is as stellar a set of glistening sonics as you will hear this year. In a certain sense, this session marks the band's evolution in a direction that approaches the sweet spot with psychedelic and progressive music meet for long walks on the beach. The overall vibe of the album is free-form and floating, with the edges of the aural tapestry going in and out of focus with buzzing irregularity. There are big shards of Saucerful-era Floyd guitar zonerism, mixed with luminous Zappa-damaged pomp flourishes, a certain chunk of drama from the Nice, and a general sort of Vertigo/Dawn/Harvest gush that will keep your brain wonderfully off balance when you try to place this music in the context 21st century Brooklyn. The (often instrumental) passages of music on The Cave move like one of the nicest white whales from the class of '68, who has managed to remain uncaptured until now. It doesn't fall into any known style traps so common in music by young people who are reaching back into history for clues. This is music sweetly fried for the stoned future. Yours, we can only hope." --Byron Coley, 2019 Edition of 250.

MELCHIOR AND P.G. SIX, DAN Exhibit A LP
"Dan Melchior is great randomizer of a musician. Born in the UK, based in the US for the last 20 years, his discography ranges from raw garage rock to avant garde tape collages, visiting a whole lots of other points in between. Exhibit A is his first collaboration with P.G. Six (aka Pat Gubler) the wonderful New England based multi-instrumentalist, who has previously appeared with Wet Tuna (FTR 364LP, 2018), Weeping Bong Band (FTR 313LP, 2018), MV & EE (FTR 167LP, 2015) and Joshua Burkett (FTR 196LP, 2015). This time out P.G. plays keyboards, recorder and electric 12-string guitar, leaving the vocals and acoustic guitar to Brother Melchior. The material on Exhibit A hearkens back to some of Melchior's early records, which had a bluesy British simplicity somewhere between Duster Bennett and Sexton Ming. The melodies are fully formed and horribly hook-laden, but there's roughness to the textural edges (and riff-qua-riffs) that gives the music an extra layer of surly magnificence. Some of the lyrics are funny as hell. I dare you to resist from smiling while listening to 'Never Trust a Man Without Sideburns' or 'It Was Good Fun'. And the cover of Creation's classic 'Painterman' is as beautiful example of form-evolution as you'll find this year. Or any other. Exhibit A is a great spin from first note to last. There are lots of strange instrumental textures and tropes, all more or less inside the confines of modernist folk invention, and the whole shimmers with a very special kind of light, while still sounding deceptively plain. It's hard to keep up with Melchior's many releases and style shifts, but it's always worth doing. And this one is a pip." --Byron Coley, 2019 Edition of 300.

LIMBS BIN Compassion And Vision CD
Recorded by a quartet of grubby fools in a miserable warehouse in Cleveland, Compassion And Vision sees Limbs Bin founder Josh Landes joined by a cast of repellent perverts -- Wyatt Howland, Erik Brown, and David Russell -- to deliver maybe the worst masterpiece to date. With Howland providing a nauseating rumble and Brown and Russell trading off turns on the kit, the two pieces that constitute this album place the listener in uncomfortable proximity to the conditions of the session. In Howland's completely unforgiving mix, you can smell the seat almost as much as the piss. Over its duration, Limbs Bin explores a range of feelings from anger, exhaustion and resignation to agony, frustration, and misery. War jazz for the emotionally underdeveloped. EASTMAN, JULIUS Femenine CD
Restocked. This recording is the première release of Julius Eastman's Femenine, for chamber ensemble. It is Femenine's only known recording, documenting a 1974 performance by the S.E.M. Ensemble (with the composer on piano) that has lain unheard for decades. The music of Julius Eastman (1940-1990) is enjoying an ongoing period of rediscovery. Known best in the past for his work with figures like Peter Maxwell Davies, Arthur Russell, and Meredith Monk, today his own formidable compositions continue to draw increasing admiration. Joyous, insistent, and immersive, Femenine bathes the listener in surges of tonal color from intertwining winds, piano, violin, pitched percussion, synthesizer, and -- uniquely -- the composer's own invention of mechanized sleigh bells, which provide the 72-minute piece with its characteristic pulse. Illuminating sleeve notes are provided by composer and author Mary Jane Leach, who is co-editor of Gay Guerrilla, a 2015 collection of essays on Eastman's life and music. Recorded by Steve Cellum -- co-producer of Arthur Russell's World of Echo -- and mastered by Denis Blackham. CD in slim card package with insert. "Eastman's stated aim with Femenine was to please listeners, saying of the piece that 'the end sounds like the angels opening up heaven . . . should we say euphoria?' " --Mary Jane Leach

Their third full-length, is the product of a full year's labor, with all 13 tracks carefully selected from among over 40 candidates. Inspired by personal tragedies and the current meltdown of the world as we know it, the songs deal with a feeling of despair that many will recognize, but also seem to say that one can heal and come out stronger, if one dares take the leap. The result is a cinematic journey in sonic technicolor. Here, even the catchiest melody casts a mysterious shadow, and every mind-altering solo is torn out of Emil Bureau's guitar as if it owed him money. VA Marvellous Boy: Calypso From West Africa 2LP
2019 repress. Deluxe 2LP version in beautiful gatefold sleeve. Marvellous Boy: Calypso From West Africa celebrates the West African counterpart of the 1950s Soho scene uncovered in the Honest Jon's series, London Is The Place For Me. Issuing from centuries of to-ing and fro-ing between England, the West Indies, and West Africa, the same musical styles -- calypso, highlife, jazz -- overlap, proliferate, and adapt, with local traditions freshened up and thrown into the mix. With numerous faces and reference points cropping up in both milieu, this contemporaneous music-making is brimming over with the same passion for life, sparkling topicality, and extravagant, magpie creativity. The inter-war dance bands of British West Africa are often strikingly similar in sound to Trinidadian orchestras like Lovey's String Band (credited with the first calypso recordings in 1912). However, the first West African calypso recordings in the modern style are from Freetown, Sierra Leone in the early 1950s, by Ebenezer Calendar and Famous Scrubbs. In arrangements blending African and European instruments, the brass plays out the legacy of colonial military bands, albeit hair-down and a little ramshackle now; and the beautiful Creole lyrics are as quick and musical as any classic calypsonian's. Decca also organized the first calypso recording session in Ghana, down the coast, where a sound interchangeably designated "calypso" or "highlife" ruled urban dancefloors, courtesy of The Tempos and its spin-offs including The Rhythm Aces. The invasion of King Mensah of Ghana, and The Tempos' money-spinning tour of Nigeria at the start of the 1950s sparked a decade of musical innovation. Bobby Benson's new highlife 11-piece included the great trumpeters Victor Olaiya and Roy Chicago and his calypso "Taxi Driver" was their first, huge, signature hit. (By contrast, little is known about the Nigerian Rolling Stone). The Mayor's Dance Band was run by the celebrated Erekosima "Rex" Lawson, whose trademark blend of Igbo lyrics over a Calabari rhythm reflected his mixed parentage. Steven Amechi was from eastern Nigeria, and the guitar solo on "Nylon Dress" is by the king of Igbo highlife, Stephen Osita Osadebe. Saxophonist Chris Ajilo and his band The Cubanos didn't produce much calpyso-highlife, but rather, cooking Afro-Cuban jazz with traditional roots, exemplifying the open hybridity of all these forms. By the early 1960s, calypso was fading in West Africa, and U.S. soul and rhythm and blues were poised to replace Caribbean influences. Still, the dying embers would produce its most classical exponent, Godwin Omabuwa, Nigeria's own Lord Kitchener. Omabuwa cut only a few records, but his mastery of the genre was a fitting end to the heyday of calypso in British West Africa.

BAILEY & CYRO BAPTISTA, DEREK Cyro 2LP
Honest Jon's Records present a reissue of Derek Bailey and Cyro Baptista's Cyro, originally released on Incus in 1988. When Cyro Baptista moved to New York in 1980 from his home city of São Paulo, he brought with him an arsenal of percussion instruments, including the cuica (friction drum), surdo (the booming bass drum associated with samba), berimbau (single-string bow with resonating gourd), and cabasas galore, in the next few years deploying them most notably in numerous ensembles curated by John Zorn, who helped set up this studio session in 1982. As you might expect from someone whose infectious grooves have graced the work of Herbie Hancock, Astrud Gilberto, and Cassandra Wilson, Baptista expertly fires off cunning polyrhythms, even traces of thumping samba, with restless fluency. Bailey, the wily old fox, skirts and eschews the bait, which is quickly conjured away and newly fashioned. The guitarist homes in on the delicious squeaks of the cuica and the twanging drones of the berimbau with truly awesome tonal precision. You could sing along if you wanted, after a caipirinha or two. And he gets almost as many different sounds from his instrument as Baptista can from his kit -- check out the stratospheric plings and string-length fret-sweeps of "Tonto", which sound more like a prepared piano than an acoustic guitar. Wonders abound, from the berimbau/bent-string exchanges that open "Quanto Tempo" to the delightful collision of howling cuica and spiky bebop on "Polvo", and the spare, preposterous Webernian samba of "Improvisation 3". These days, "improvisation" often appears without its customary qualifier "free". If there were ever a case to be made for its reinstatement, this album is the best supporting evidence. Freedom means you're free to get into the groove, free not to, free to play with each other, free to play against each other. Sometimes frustrating, even scary, but more often than not in the hands of these two great masters it's hilarious, exhilarating and utterly irresistible.

BAILEY & TONY COE, DEREK Time 2LP
Honest Jon's Records present a reissue of Derek Bailey and Tony Coe's Time, originally released on Incus in 1979. Multi-reedist Tony Coe was born in 1934, four years after guitarist Derek Bailey. He cut his teeth as a career jazzman with Humphrey Lyttleton, before an extended stint with the Kenny Clarke/Francy Boland Big Band. On this rare 1979 duo outing, he sticks to clarinet. And though that instrument has an illustrious jazz pedigree, Coe's playing here is something else. It's worth noting that the clarinetist has also played under the baton of arch-modernist Pierre Boulez, the kind of composer Derek Bailey enjoyed taking to task in his book Improvisation. You might think the Frenchman's uncompromising serialism and the free playing Bailey defended with such passion all his life would have little in common, yet both men were hugely influenced by Anton Webern. It's an influence you can hear right through Bailey's career in his obsessive exploration of tight parcels of registrally-fixed pitches, notably those trademark ringing harmonics. Meanwhile, Coe's meandering semitones and sinuous arabesques here recall both Boulez's clarinet writing in Domaines, and the harmonic world of Boulez's own teacher Olivier Messiaen. Still, no traditional classical musical notation could ever render the extraordinary rhythmic subtlety and timbral complexity of this music. It's at one and the same time dazzlingly virtuosic -- Coe and Bailey are on stellar form throughout, and have enough sense to, yes, accompany each other where needs be -- and supremely lyrical and spacious. An absolute delight.

HAYES/JUNIOR COOK QUINTET, LOUIS At Onkel Po's Carnegie Hall Hamburg 1976 2LP
Double-LP version. 180 gram vinyl; gatefold sleeve. The series continues! Drummer Louis Hayes, best known from his work with Cannonball Adderley presented together with his co-leader, tenor-saxophonist Junior Cook, known from his work with Horace Silver, a fantastic hard bop quintet, which featured young Woody Shaw on trumpet. The trumpeter turned 32 in the year this recording was made and was already on track for a career, which would make him one of the most important representatives of contemporary jazz (silenced way too early!). Shaw died in 1989, not even 45 years old. Already almost completely blind, he lost an arm in a subway-accident. Shortly afterwards his body just gave up. Recordings of Shaw together with his own ensemble are among the highlights of the Onkel Pö-series and more will follow soon. Shaw is exemplary for the musician at the crossroad between tradition on the one side and change on the other. He was able to perform freely but still keep a close attachment to the masters who had influenced and formed him. Until today he is one of the great forbears and casts a long shadow on young musicians, who again and again explore the narrow path which separates tradition and progress. Recorded March 11, 1976 at Onkel Pö's Carnegie Hall, Hamburg, Germany; Recorded by NDR Hamburg. Personnel: Woody Shaw - trumpet; Junior Cook - tenor sax; Ronnie Matthews - piano; Stafford James - bass; Louis Hayes - drums. Features extended liner notes in English and German by Michael Laages.

ETANT DONNES La Vue CD
"Etant Donnes is a French duo named after Marcel Duchamp's last major work. The group consists of brothers Marc and Eric Hurtado, born in Morocco and working mainly as performance artists and musicians. Their sound can be described as a mix of field recordings, found sounds and sometimes whispered, sometimes violent vocals. They describe their sounds like this: 'Through Marc and Eric, it is the volume of each word that becomes an object-sculpture, together with the power of their bodies expressing their voices. Each event is a scream -- indeed even the glissando -- of the strength of the word that sometimes abruptly becomes a rock, a solid surface, not in the least fluvial, as is the narrative of a tale, novel or poetic epic. With both of them, there is no more trace of ancient prosodies, no more trace of the incomprehensible Sainte-Beuve who could claim: 'I have to collect a volume of prose'. The word, the voice, the volume take shape with each other, unveiling a theatre that theatre usually ignores, which has given it such things as a Samuel Beckett's Fin de Partie.' Over the years Etant Donnes have collaborated with people like Lydia Lunch, Michael Gira, Alan Vega and Genesis P-Orridge. La Vue was the first ever recording, dating back to 1979 and originally issued on French Bain Total label (run by Philippe Fichot of Die Form). For this re-issue, the band has found a longer version than was previously available, so this is a unique chance to hear Etant Donnes in their earliest form in a version that has previously been unpublished."

"Hula were founded in Sheffield in 1981. Three members (Mark Albrow, Alan Fish and Ron Wright) lived with Stephen Mallinder (Cabaret Voltaire) and Paul Widger (They must be Russians, Clock DVA, the Box) in a villa called Hula Kula. After trying the bass players Alan Watt and Chris Brain (Tense, NOS) Hula recorded the impressive debut album Cut From Inside with Mark Brydon (Chakk, Moloko). Ingredients like cut ups, steady rhythms, and paranoia vocals were blended together into a unique white funky sound. Cut From Inside originally came out on Red Rhino Records in 1983. One year earlier, the first EP under the name Hula was released, entitled Black Pop Workout. It was mostly recorded at Cabaret Voltaire's Western Works studio. BIRGE & HELENE SAGE, JEAN-JACQUES Rendez-vous CD
"French group Un Drame Musical Instantané was founded in 1976. They present an original, unclassifiable, inventive music, which drifts from jazz to electronic sounds and contemporary music. Klanggalerie has started an extensive re-issue program with these unique avantgarde pioneers which will bring back their classic albums but also side projects like this one. Rendez-Vous was recorded in 1981 but never released. This is what group founder Birgé has to say about the recording: 'I met Hélène when she was doing a performance at Espace Palikao in Paris with choreographer Lulla Card Chourlin. She was singing whilst driving an old Mercedes Benz, trying to run over Lulla, and playing double bass on its roof! I proposed her to record some improvisations at Studio GRRR as I've always done with new musicians and as I'm still doing. The connection was so great, as one can hear on this record 37 years later, that I asked her to join the 15-piece orchestra of Un Drame Musical Instantané which had just been founded. She brought some crazy stuff into the group, playing strange instruments she had invented herself. She is a wonderful flute player, but I asked her to play all kinds of instruments and also to sing, leaving her often free to improvise besides the written score. In the next years we both played as a duo and she became the fourth member of the Drame. When I listen to these pieces today, I'm surprised by the high degree of composition, the quality and variety of our inventions. The mix of acoustic and electronic instruments sounds totally contemporary, plus with the energy of youth and the absolute love for innovative forms.'"

SECEDE Tryshasla 2LP
Originally released in 2005, Tryshasla is the second "Perennial" series release and was the second studio album by Dutch producer Secede. This classic album is one of Lapsus Records' favorites and they reissue it here on vinyl for the first time. Lennard van der Last, better known in electronic music circles as Secede, has always remained an elusive character, preferring to prioritize to his work in the studio. Although Tryshasla is unanimously heralded as his finest work, throughout his career Lennard has continually demonstrated his unique ability in producing venerated musical pieces. Upon its original release on CD by Dutch label Sending Orbs, Tryshasla immediately became a benchmark album and featured in many independent lists of that year. Tryshasla continues to sound as current and relevant as ever. It is an album with a powerful ambient spirit, replete with micro-passages in which field recordings and piano phrasing form its core sound, but which also include styles such as IDM, drum and bass, and even trip-hop. As if this were not enough, Reimer Eising -- aka Lapsus Records' beloved label contributor Kettel -- collaborates on one of the albums integral tracks, "Leraine". Lithographic original art print from illustrator Jeroen Advocaat. Remastered by Xavier Alarcón. Tricolor double-LP vinyl (transparent green, clear, and black).

LUSSI, MARTINA Diffusion Is A Force LP
"Martina Lussi's second album fuses together disparate sound sources with a disorienting quality that reflects the modern climate of dispersion and distraction. The Lucerne, Switzerland-based sound artist released her debut album Selected Ambient on Hallow Ground in 2017, and now comes to Latency with a bold new set of themes and processes. The range of tools at her disposal spans field recordings, processed instrumentation, synthesised elements and snatches of human expression. The guitar is a recurring figure, subjected to a variety of treatments from heavy, sustained distortion to clean, pealing notes. Elsewhere the sound of sports crowds and choral singing merge, and patient beds of drones and noise melt into the sounds of industry and mechanics. The track titles manifest as a compositional game of deception complete with innuendos, empty phrases and claims -- flirtations with perfume names and ironic assertions. From the volatile geopolitical climate to the changing nature of music consumption in the face of streaming and digital access, Diffusion Is A Force is a reflection on fractured times where familiar modes and models change their meaning with the ever-quickening pace of communication."

KRIEGEL, VOLKER Biton Grooves 2CD
"Biton thus produced a total of five albums in which Volker Kriegel was involved - but which were forgotten for a long time and did not even appear in many early discographies. However, collectors in the completion mania then paid ever higher amounts for these LPs, and also some DJs had discovered the Biton sound and obtained beats & breaks for their own productions from it. With this release of the Volker Kriegel: Biton Grooves there are now 37 tracks in best quality, crackle-free and affordable, which Kriegel and his fellow musicians recorded in the sessions for the legendary LPs BIT 2001, 2002, 2004, 2006 and 2008. And read the names of the participants, then it quickly becomes clear that this was the first league of German jazz and jazz rock at the start -- and all more or less line-ups, which one also knows from regular Kriegel albums of the respective phase: Rainer Brüninghaus and later Thomas Bettermann (e-piano), Peter Giger, Klaus Weiss, Joe Nay & Evert Fraterman (drums/percussion), Eberhard Weber, and Hans Peter Ströer (bass) and others.Yes, and what do you hear here now? Great instrumentalists, no question about it -- and music that would at least partly have fitted on one or the other Kriegel album of those years. OK, here and there the melodies and sounds are a bit simpler and more catchy, but Kriegel's trademarks -- his wonderful chords and double stops, the wah-wah and sitar interjections, his still impressive guitar licks in downward movement -- all this can be experienced 1:1 here. And of course, the partly bizarre distortion sounds of those years, which for many later born electric guitarists for a long time just sounded unbelievable to impossible. And long ago back again..."

KRIEGEL & SPECTRUM, VOLKER Mild Maniac CD
"The ingredients of a Kriegel style jazz rock are as simple as they are complex: an often pumping rock bass, whose stoic groove Eberhard Weber leaves behind in wide arcs on his corpus-less electro contrabass, and a drumset drumming crisply dry to the beat by Joe Nay, which is put under tension time and again by Peter Giger's shimmering percussions. Rainer Brüninghaus's flat-oscillating chord playing on the e-piano, which he breaks open with long, eloquently phrased garlands, and Kriegel's wide, slightly distorted legato bows on the semi-acoustic guitar. This is Kriegel's creative cosmos, so he sounds: The rudeness of rock and the suppleness of jazz go hand in hand with the melancholy of blues and the emotionality of soul. The five bonus tracks following the six Mild Maniac tracks on the original album are interesting for the re-release of this Kriegel recording, which has often been praised as a legendary recording. Kriegel played the last four numbers with his Mild Maniac Orchestra at the 1977 Schlossfestspiele in Idstein. But only in the last title, in Kriegel's long 'Schnellhörspiel', is the whole band with all the musical set pieces described above present."

KOUYATE & NGONI BA, BASSEKOU Miri CD
Bassekou Kouyate is back on his original label Out Here Records with his fifth studio album, Miri. Miri is an album about love, friendship, family, and true values in times of crisis. Miri means dream or contemplation in Bamana. On Miri, Kouyate travels back to his hometown Garana, a small village at the banks of the Niger river. The instrumental song "Miri" captures that feeling. Miri talks about Kouyate's mother Yakare who passed away. "Deli" is a song about true friendship. "Konya" talks about jealousy a problem that can even destroy families. "Wele Ni" takes you deep into the history of Segou koro (old Segou), once home of the Bamana kings. The song is about a king who thought he didn't need to treat the people around him with respect, and later realizes he is nothing without the people around him. The song features vocalist Abdoulaye Diabate and Bassekou playing slide ngoni with a bottleneck. Like Mali music legend Abdoulaye Diabate, most guests on the album are longtime collaborators. Bassekou's friendship with Habib Koite goes way back to the early days of Symmetric Orchestra. As a trio together with young Toumani Diabate Bassekou played his first concert in Europe in 1989. "Kanto Kelena (She Left Me Alone)" is a song about a man who was left alone by his loved one. Afel Bocoum (Ali Farka Toure) from the same village Niafunke, sings for peace between the Fula, who herd cattle, and the local cultivators of Mali, on "Tabital Pulaaku". A very special guest is a young Kankou Kouyate, the daughter of Bassekou's brother Fousseyni who used to play in Ngoni Ba -- Kankou can be heard on all of the background vocals. Michael League (Snarky Puppy, Bokanté) went out of his way to add some guitar to the song "Konya". Fiddle player Casey Driessen, whom Bassekou met while touring with Bela Fleck, played on the folk ballad "Nyame". Dom Flemons (Carolina Chocolate Drops) plays bones on Bamana classic "Fanga". "Wele Cuba" is an Afro-Cuban jam about Africa's love for Cuban music; Cuba's answer is sung by Yasel Gonzalez Rivera (Madera Limpia). The album pays homage to two great Malian singers that have blessed quite a number of Bassekou's albums: the one and only Zoumana Tereta and the golden voice of Mali, Kassemady Diabate. Also features Majid Bekkas.

POP, IGGY Santa Monica '77 Featuring David Bowie LP
Iggy Pop, live at the Civic Auditorium, Santa Monica, CA on April 15th, 1977. The Iggy/Bowie period is a sharp document of hedonism and salvation. Two rock stars sought salvation from the narcosis of LA, and moved to West Berlin, a move that would not only give birth to Bowie's celebrated Berlin period and resulting trilogy, but take Iggy Pop from the gutters to the stars with his first two solo albums in 1977. Back on the road with The Idiot (1977) and the impending Lust For Life (1977), Iggy bounces back to life for the 30-date "Rock Around The World" tour, stopping at Santa Monica's Civic Auditorium on the way. Backed by Bowie himself, the formidable Sales brothers (Tony and Hunt), and Ricky Gardiner, Iggy explores his new lease of life with the usual swagger and onstage psychosis. Pitching Fun House (1970) against The Idiot was sure gonna be one to watch! Protus presents the entire original King Biscuit Flower Hour broadcast of Iggy Pop at the Civic Auditorium, Santa Monica, CA from April 15th, 1977. Professionally remastered original broadcast with background liners, interviews, and rare photos capturing the period.

MARLEY & THE WAILERS, BOB Soul Rebels CD
Radiation Roots presents a reissue of Bob Marley and The Wailers' Soul Rebels, originally issued in 1970. Easily one of the greatest roots reggae albums of all time, Soul Rebels resulted from the intensive partnership brokered by the group and maverick producer, Lee 'Scratch' Perry. It was the first Wailers 'concept' album, conceived as a long-player based on a rebellious theme, rather than a collection of isolated singles, and the presence of the Barrett brothers in the rhythm section pointed the way for greater glories to come. The Wailers first formed as an unruly five-piece in 1963, with Junior Braithwaite as lead singer and Beverley Kelso an early member, sometimes replaced by Cherry Green. During their long tenure at Studio One, Bob Marley gradually shifted to the lead vocal role and the robust core of Marley, Peter Tosh, and Neville Livingston, aka Bunny Wailer, soon emerged as the mainstays of the group. Perry was involved with the Wailers at Studio One, using their talents for backing vocals on some of his solo work, but the partnership that yielded Soul Rebels was in an entirely different league. The title track, Tosh's anguished "400 Years and "Corner Stone" are legendary for their intense power; "It's Alright" set the template for the later "Night Shift," "My Cup" was an individual barebones reading of James Brown's "I Guess I'll Have To Cry Cry Cry," while the playful "Try Me" and "No Water" are suggestive odes. Tosh's dejected "No Sympathy" and the spirited "Soul Almighty" are other winners and the "Cloud 9" revamp "Rebel's Hop" is another joy. All killer, no filler!

DILLINGER Marijuana In My Brain CD
Radiation Roots presents a reissue of Dillinger's Marijuana In My Brain, originally issued in 1977. In the early 1970s, top-ranking toaster Lester Bullock got his start on the El Paso sound system in the mean streets of western Kingston. Initially known as Young Capone, since he was a protégé of the better-established Dennis Alcapone, he was renamed Dillinger by Lee 'Scratch' Perry, the first producer to record a significant number of tracks with the youth. "Dub Organiser" and "Tighten Up Skank" were somewhat popular when released in 1973 and there were individual tracks cut for Phil Pratt, Augustus Pablo, Prince Tony Robinson, and Joe Gibbs, as well as Studio One, who issued his debut LP, Ready Natty Dreadie, in 1975. By then, Dillinger was recording a series of singles for hit-making producer Bunny 'Striker' Lee, particularly on Johnnie Clarke's rhythms, though recordings for Channel One and the CB 200 album were what catapulted him into overseas consciousness in 1976, once the outstanding single, "Cocaine In My Brain," reached the European pop charts. Marijuana In My Brain dates from 1977 and placed the toaster over some of the Striker's hottest rhythms, previously utilized for Clarke scorchers like "Satta" and "Poor Marcus" (along with the odd Ronnie Davis track); Clarke's reading of "Going To A Ball" is here transformed into an ode to the Bouncing Ball, then one of the most popular clubs for black Londoners, and his "African Roots" anthem gets the Dillinger treatment too. Of course, the title track was the biggest hit of the bunch, an ode to the 'wisdom weed' driven by cosmic space synth overdubs.

SLY & ROBBIE Dubs For Tubs: A Tribute To King Tubby CD
Radiation Roots present a reissue of Sly & Robbie's Dubs For Tubs: A Tribute To King Tubby, originally released in 1990. Lowell Dunbar and Robert Shakespeare are the renowned Jamaican rhythm section that has worked with a range of international stars, including Bob Dylan, Mick Jagger, Joan Armatrading, Garland Jeffries, and countless others. They first came to know each other in the early 1970s, when both were based in rival bands playing in clubs on Kingston's Red Hills Road and started working together at Channel One studio in the mid-1970s, when Sly was musical arranger for the Revolutionaries house band and Robbie the main bassist for Bunny Lee's Aggrovators. After a stint of international touring in Peter Tosh's Word, Sound and Power band, which exposed them to the tastes and markets of overseas audiences, the pair joined forces more concertedly with their Taxi label, producing hits with Gregory Isaacs, Dennis Brown, Sugar Minott, and the Wailing Souls. At the same time, as the driving force behind the Compass Point All Stars, they brought Grace Jones to prominence worldwide and made Gwen Guthrie a star through reggaefied disco, and then brought Black Uhuru into the top spot in the wake of Bob Marley's passing. Then, when Jamaican music went digital with the "Sleng Teng" craze of the mid-1980s, Sly and Robbie made the shift in that direction too, becoming among the most prominent producers as the '80s gave way to the '90s. Dubs For Tubs: A Tribute To King Tubby is a digital dub salute to King Tubby, issued shortly after his terrible murder; it is mostly comprised of synthesizer re-cuts of classic Jamaican rhythms, with "Dub For Joy" being a tough re-working of the Heptones' "Love Me Girl" and "Dub To Make You Move And Groove" a take on their "Party Time"; Dennis Brown's "Here I Come" is here mutated to "Dub For Roots People" and his "Here I Come" anthem shifted into the spongy "Dub For All Seasons." An intriguing re-work of "Sleng Teng" is among the other highlights.

JODOROWSKY, ALEXANDRO The Holy Mountain: Original Soundtrack (Blue Vinyl) 2LP
Limited restock, blue vinyl LP version; edition of 500. "One of the ironies of the career of Chilean-born filmmaker Alejandro Jodorowsky is that while he is best known as a visual stylist, his most avid and loyal champions have often been musicians. When Jodorowsky arrived in New York from Mexico City in 1970 carrying a copy of the then-unreleased El Topo, it was the jazz producer Alan Douglas who bought the distribution rights to the film. When Jodorowsky and Douglas were looking for a venue in which to screen El Topo, it was John Lennon and Yoko Ono who asked for it to run at midnight following their short-film festival at New York's Elgin Cinema. After six months of sold-out midnight screenings at the Elgin, it was Lennon's manager, Allen Klein (ABKCO's founder), who bought the rights to El Topo and agreed to produce its follow-up, The Holy Mountain. And when Jodorowsky wanted, in his words, 'another kind of music -- something that wasn't entertainment, something that wasn't a show, something that went to the soul, something profound,' for the soundtrack to The Holy Mountain, forward came jazz legend Don Cherry and crack studio musician (and one-time Archie) Ron Frangipane to share composing and (along with Jodorowsky) conducting duties. And, boy, did they deliver -- the score to The Holy Mountain is every bit as hallucinatory as the fantastic visual imagery in the film itself. The deep, primordial chants that begin the movie, 'Trance Mutation,' give way to an almost jaunty percussion-and-plucked-strings melody, 'Pissed and Passed Out.' On the next track, 'Violence of the Lambs,' a single flute is slowly joined by a set of mournful strings while, onscreen, Gestapo-like soldiers in gas masks parade with bloody lamb carcasses on sticks. 'Drink It,' an upbeat sitar folk melody, follows, briefly accompanying the main protagonist The Thief's ill-considered decision to guzzle tequila (or sleeping potion). Then there is 'Christs 4 Sale,' a blaring orchestral riff that sounds like it was ripped from a 1950's swords-and-sandals epic. The next track, 'Cast Out and Pissed,' begins with a beelike buzz, then is overwhelmed by a cacophony of drums, horns, and, finally, screaming. 'Eye of the Beholder' which follows, changes moods entirely once again -- a string section swells with overwrought romanticism. (Onscreen, a group of young prostitutes prays in a church. One of them later walks arm and arm with a chimpanzee.) And then there is 'Communion,' a brooding, trumpet-led number that would be at home on the noir-steeped Chinatown soundtrack. (As 'Communion' plays, the Thief is not driving through Los Angeles at night but eating the face off a statue of Christ.) This veritable cornucopia of musical styles would be more than enough to fill an entire movie. It would be more than enough to fill three movies. But in fact, the eight musical compositions described above play entirely in The Holy Mountain's first 24 minutes. Still ahead lie the hard rock of 'Psychedelic Weapons,' the pomp and circumstance of the waltz 'Miniature Plastic Bomb Shop,' the gospel-inflected sax of 'Isla (The Sapphic Sleep),' and so on. Every one of the 24 tracks on the film's soundtrack presents another vertiginous twist in the philosophical and spiritual journey that is The Holy Mountain. The double-LP edition features liner notes by New York Times contributor Eric Benson that include exclusive quotes from Jodorowsky himself, festooned with copious production stills. Produced for release by Grammy-winning producer Teri Landi and Mick Gochanour, and mastered from the original tapes by Joe Yannece (with lacquer cutting on the LP by Carl Rowatti at Trutone Mastering), this long-awaited release of Alejandro Jodorowsky's The Holy Mountain: Original Soundtrack offers a major addition to the soundtrack canon and a completely unique listening experience."

HEDVIG MOLLESTAD TRIO Smells Funny CD
With Smells Funny being their sixth album in seven years, the explosive and expansive Hedvig Mollestad Trio have gone from strength to strength, gathering respect from both rock and jazz camps, sharing big stages with the likes of John McLaughlin and Black Sabbath, and being equally comfortable in jazz and rock clubs. Smells Funny sees Mollestad truly coming into her own as an amazing lead guitarist as well as a dependable riffmeister. Hedvig first picked up her mother's nylon-strung acoustic guitar at ten, before discovering a whole new world through her father's jazz and rock record collection as a teenager. She translated a biography of Jimi Hendrix for a school project and was given her first electric guitar and amplifier as a confirmation present. The members of the trio are from the districts, but Hedvig met Ellen Brekken and Ivar Loe Bjørnstad at the Music Academy in Oslo. Hedvig asked them to join her after she received the Jazz Talent Of The Year Award at Molde International Jazzfestival in 2009. They have stayed together since, and all previous albums have been released on Rune Grammofon; Shoot! (RCD 2115CD/RLP 3115LP, 2011), All Of Them Witches (RCD 2141CD/RLP 3141LP 2013), Enfant Terrible (RCD 2157CD/ RLP 3157LP, 2014), Black Stabat Mater (RCD 2183CD/RLP 3183LP, 2016) and Evil In Oslo (RLP 2184LP, 2016), all to wide international acclaim.

ROMPERAYO Que Jue? LP
Second release on the newly minted Souk (sub label of Discrepant), coming swiftly after the mind-blowing Palestinian beat LP Inkanakuntu (SOUK 001LP, 2018). For the second release, Souk chose someone who is already part of our Discrepant family: the Colombian tropical masters Romperayo, aka Pedro Ojeda. Back in 2015 Discrepant released their self-titled debut and now it's time for the follow up, Que Jue?, ten up-tempo bangers filled with the unique sounds of psychedelic 1970s Cumbia. Whilst the first Romperayo LP united several musicians around Pedro Ojeda's frantic drum style (CREP 020LP, 2015), Que Jue? sees him take the reins solo, armed with instruments, samplers, and his trusted drum skills. Que Jue? is a fever rhythm joy, an intense voyage to the diverse landscape of Colombian folklore and psychedelic scene. It's also a combination of old and new, an exploration of sample techniques that throwback to classic cumbia but with an electronic minimal vibe that seeks the intense repetition of some dance music produced recently. All for the sake of pleasure, Romperayo's music is magnetic, impulsive, and addictive. The repetitive patterns are mixed astutely and sweaty percussion changes the rhythm whenever it's needed: you don't know that, but they do, and they deliver it frequently with awe. Tropical fusion, new cumbia, or salsa on acids? You decide.

VA Milano After Punk: Rare And Unreleased Tracks From Milan's Underground New Wave Scene 1979-1984 LP+CD
Milan, 1979, only two years had passed since the explosion of punk but it seemed like ten years had passed, 1977 had inexorably changed the destiny of a generation of musicians. Milan in those years felt a bit like Manchester, a city in black and white, with monuments grayed by smog, busy and still far from becoming the "Milan to drink" of the mid-80s. The music scene was totally disconnected from the rest of the Italian underground, the bands were born and imploded within a few months. The inputs that arrived thanks to the English weekly New Musical Express and some Italian fanzines were essential to know what happened across the channel almost in real time. The concerts at the 2001 Odyssey, a club where almost all the really important post-punk bands performed, were fundamental to understand and feel part of something that resembled a revolution, a movement that in those years produced little in terms of discography but that today, after almost forty years, Spittle Records reveal the absolute uniqueness of the proposals of the protagonists of that Milanese season. Sharp guitars, primordial drum machines, synthesizers bought at a high price and 4-track cassette recorders were the tools used to affirm their belonging to a creative movement that developed simultaneously throughout Europe. Concept and compilation by Fred Ventura. File under: minimal synth, post-punk, synth-pop, punk funk, no wave. Features Aus Decline, Oh Oh Art, Der Blaue Reiter, Other Side, Cast Of Thousands, 2+2=5, Monofonic Orchestra, After Budapest, La Maison, State Of Art, Nobody, Actor's Studio, and Jeunesse D'ivoire. TELESCOPES, THE Exploding Head Syndrome CD
Exploding Head Syndrome is a snapping into consciousness, a synaptic charge of analog dissonance saturated through a complex undercurrent of pulsing minimalism, profound in its simplicity. A static haze of electronic distortion drifts in and out of lucidity to a sure propulsion of stone age repetition and heady bass vibrations, the momentum held on a thread of acoustic tension. As warm organs drone around the oscillating bones of enchanted melodies, an electric hive of enclosing guitars encircle Lawrie's trance induced visions, which hang suspended, fractured at the core, until completely enveloped by the gathering swarm. Welcome to the 11th studio album from The Telescopes, their third for Tapete. Consisting of eight new songs and incantations that form a series of sonic convulsions stretching the parameters of intuitive composition to the point of auditory illusion. Conceived in 1987, The Telescopes emerged as innovators in the field of melodic noise, becoming a crucial inspiration to a multitude of artists and listeners alike. The group has consisted of a revolving line-up centered around lead protagonist and founding instigator Stephen Lawrie. With the exception of "Until The End", Exploding Head Syndrome was created entirely by Lawrie himself while immersed in solitude deep in West Yorkshire. As the title suggests, this is the sound of a triggered mind reaching into the depths of his own inner turmoil on a personal quest for basic clarity. Whereas previous albums for Tapete have set a parallel course between song-based structures and freeform impressionism, Exploding Head Syndrome employs almost traditional song writing techniques to achieve a melodic swirl of simplistic refrains capable of lulling the listener into vast sonic dimensions. In the 1700s, William Herschel defined a telescope as an instrument through which a person may view "beyond the realm of natural vision". This is the mantra of The Telescopes. "Until The End" was co-written with Chris Plavidal (Stumptone) and is dedicated to the late Nevada Hill (Bludded Head). Exploding Head Syndrome is the name given by John M. S. Pearce in 1989 to a phenomena described by Robert Armstrong-Jones in 1920 as "snapping of the brain". It is a condition in which a person experiences unreal noises. The front sleeve holds an image of a blank sheet blowing in a breeze. A natural light phenomena occurring at the time the photograph was taken gives the illusion of a face.

2019 repress. 2LP version, featuring 13 tracks from the CD version. Detroit's Drexciya, with their close ties to Underground Resistance, emerged in 1991. With an encoded agenda and socio-political mission aimed at the world, a new page of Drexciya's grand history was written entitled Neptune's Lair, featuring 21 exclusive tracks released in the fall of 1999. Drexciya is the sound of originality embodying all the musical styles and history that Detroit the city has seen and been part of. Drexciya is music for change that defies categorization; traditionally armed with freestyle electro, techno, funk, and jazz while covering an entire spectrum of moods ranging from the dark to shimmering beauty. While words won't do Neptune's Lair proper justice, rootsy Kraftwerkian techno ("Universal Element" and "Oxyplasmic Gyration Beam"), gives way to G-style electro ("Andreaen Sand Dunes"), while jazzy freestyle funk ("Running Out Of Space" and "Funk Release Valve") evolves alongside classic 4/4 club sound. Although the roots run deep, Neptune's Lair heralded an important new chapter in the musical connections between Detroit's finest and Tresor.

ATRAX MORGUE Red Box 5CD BOX
Marco Corbelli's artistic journey began in the early '90s. Under the pseudonym of Marco Rotula, he started to release a series of fanzines in A5 format. The first was The Pleasure Agony, followed by Sick and Murders. The aesthetics of these first fanzines were very sophisticated and the content deals with topics that will follow Marco Corbelli throughout his artistic career: sadism, schizophrenia, insanity, murder, psychosis, necrophilia, diseases, and most importantly death. In 1993, heavily influenced by his obsessions, Marco Corbelli began his musical activities creating the Slaughter Productions label and the Atrax Morgue project. Greatly inspired by Italian power electronics act The Sodality, with their 1987 LP Beyond Unknown Pleasures and from projects as Whitehouse and Brighter Death Now, pioneers of a minimal, evil, and visceral electronic, Atrax Morgue released his first tape In Search Of Death which will be followed by a series of amazing cassettes in the following years. Tape after tape, with the help of an analog synthesizer Sequential Circuits Six-Trak, a microphone connected with a Yamaha multi-effect, tape decks, and a mixer, Marco Corbelli blows up emotions and delusions, cutting out the hard way inspired portraits of phobias and deviation. With this minimal equipment Marco has created all his shocking releases, excluding 1995's Cut My Throat (UMA 124LP), where he used the Crumar Spirit and in the latest works before he died, as for the collaboration with M.B., he also used RE-201 Space Echo (the only other machines he had used were Crumar Bit One and the Roland 909, both of which were used only for the Mörder Machine project). The main manifesto of Atrax Morgue is the analysis of the death, his perfection, and complete habituation: injections of death to continue to live. The hum of the synth, the roar of noise and fights razor are often repeated loops, where each track has a compact structure, following the main theme (of death). Urashima present a red wooden box with five CDs that include reissues of eleven terrific titles from his legendary label Slaughter Productions: In Search Of Death (1993), Exterminate (1995), Esthetik Of A Corpse, Catch My Agony (1995), Collection In Formaldeide (1994), Mechanic Asphyxia (1997), Death-Orgasm Connector (2003), Sweetly (1996), Woundfucker (1998), HomicidalI (1997), and An Expression Of Psychic Masochism (1995). Each single CD comes inside cardboard wallet with credits and new artwork; Edition of 300 (numbered).

REA, OONA First Name Oona CD
Oona is a girl's name. It's the English version of the Irish name Úna, spelled strictly with an accent mark on the letter "u". Oona is matchless. Her voice is intimate and emotional. It glides from a velvet soft, soothing and captivating sound that first hypnotizes then freezes the listener in a startingly intense sound experience. An airy and easy-going melody that lulls and then swings you into a gentle groove you'll find hard to resist. Oona has her own rhythmic way with words and vocals, and a masterful capacity of playing with the Italian and English languages. She can write a line then change it entirely; since everything moves incessantly -- so does she. Oona is funk, jazz, bossa nova, or pop. She doesn't care what she is because she's just herself. She's acquainted with all genres and uses everything to create her own unequalled style. First Name Oona is Oona Rea's first album, with nine songs that will enchant you before you're even aware of it. Oona wrote all the lyrics herself and co-composed the music with Luigi Masciari, who created the arrangements and plays guitar. She then had the nine songs played by Alfredo Paixão who added bass lines, and Alessandro Marzi who put in drums. Occasionally, Danilo Rea went to listen to them at the studio where he added his masterful piano flourishes. First Name Oona is a subtle album, like a languid warmth it rushes through your veins and reverberates through your body, insisting and demanding that you listen to it yet once more.

VELVET UNDERGROUND, THE White Light/White Heat LP
2019 repress; 2008 release. While 1967's Velvet Underground & Nico was a part of Andy Warhol's global artistic vision, 1968's White Light/White Heat was free of all Warholian influence, so in a way it could be thought of as another debut album. Here the music was left to fester on its own, with no artistic visionary interfering or trying to create a soundtrack for his pop art, and the Velvets filled that void with an album that is an aural subway car full of drunkards, junkies and whores rumbling through the bowels of NYC with a one way ticket to oblivion. Includes 3 bonus tracks.

GAYE, MARVIN What's Going On LP
2019 repress; 2014 reissue. Originally released in 1971. "What's Going On is not only Marvin Gaye's masterpiece, it's the most important and passionate record to come out of soul music, delivered by one of its finest voices, a man finally free to speak his mind and so move from R&B sex symbol to true recording artist. With What's Going On, Gaye meditated on what had happened to the American dream of the past -- as it related to urban decay, environmental woes, military turbulence, police brutality, unemployment, and poverty. These feelings had been bubbling up between 1967 and 1970, during which he felt increasingly caged by Motown's behind-the-times hit machine and restrained from expressing himself seriously through his music. Finally, late in 1970, Gaye decided to record a song that the Four Tops' Obie Benson had brought him, 'What's Going On.' When Berry Gordy decided not to issue the single, deeming it uncommercial, Gaye refused to record any more material until he relented. Confirmed by its tremendous commercial success in January 1971, he recorded the rest of the album over ten days in March, and Motown released it in late May. Besides cementing Marvin Gaye as one of the most important artists in pop music, What's Going On was far and away the best full-length to issue from the singles-dominated Motown factory, and arguably the best soul album of all time." --John Bush, AllMusic

DAVIS, MILES WBCN Broadcast 1972: Live At Paul's Mall LP
Miles Davis and his electric group of the early '70s is some of the most innovative and important jazz music ever set to tape. While the studio recordings are amazing, they often pale in comparison to the loose, improvisational and fiery heights that the group could reach in front of a live audience (as was captured on Live-Evil (1971), In Concert (1973), and Miles Davis At Fillmore (1970), among others). This set from September of 1972 is no exception. Recorded just prior to the release of On The Corner (1972), this stellar performance features tracks from that classic as well as Jack Johnson (1971) and Bitches Brew (1970). Featuring the great guitar work of his live band staple, Reggie Lucas, and the phenomenal saxophonist Carlos Garnett, this is early '70s electric Miles at its finest, a brilliant radio broadcast.

GUIOT, DOMINIQUE L'Univers De La Mer CD
WRWTFWW Records present the official reissue of super-rare and fabled prog-rock/library/synth album L'Univers De La Mer by French composer Dominique Guiot. Written, composed and played by Dominique Guiot with his Mellotron, Minimoog, clavinet, organ, and guitar, L'Univers De La Mer draws its inspiration from deep sea exploration, oceanic creatures, and underwater kingdoms. The 12-track album navigates organically through diverse mutations of the prog-rock and synth kind, from scenic meditation pieces ("Wind Surf Ballad"), to medieval electronica ("Une Ballade Pour Une Goélette"), spacey smooth jazz ("Les Deux Poissons"), funked-out fantasy folk ("L'Univers De La Mer"), or even incredible Sega Mega-CD vibes ("La Danse Des Méduses") -- altogether painting a fascinating world of eerie magic and subaquatic sensuality. It's escapism at its best with subtle overtones of Schicke Führs Fröhling, Mike Oldfield, and Claude Perraudin. The sound of the album is brilliantly captured by its surreal cover art, the work of legendary artist Jacques Wyrs, whose memorable record sleeves include Klaus Schulze's Picture Music (1975), Eloy's Floating (1974), Ange's Le Cimetière Des Arlequins (1973), and the 1974 reissue of Larry Coryell's Spaces. Sourced from original masters. CD version marks the first CD release of the album.
