JERRY, AL Zerma Thurstra EP 12"
The second release on AF Trax, again with all profits being donated to Hope Not Hate, is the debut from Al Jerry who has the following to say: "I was initially picturing Al as an ambivalent character trying to evoke in his music deep issues and emotions related to Middle Eastern cultures . . . When I introduced that vague idea of a project/alias to B with an early version of 'Sana'a Riots', he got instantly into it. The hybrid feel of the project really allowed us to experiment and mess around with odd tonalities and enthused solos."

HELM World In Action (Remixed) 12"
Mutant jungle forms, hazy glitch experiments, and trance-inducing downtempo collide with sharp percussion and dense low end. Helm's recent World In Action EP for The Trilogy Tapes is reworked by favorites including Laurel Halo and Parris who offer up two distinctly different takes on "Blue Scene". No Symbols boss Beneath remixes "World In Action" with that typically murky, deconstructed club aesthetic whilst Parisian mainstay Low Jack's version of "Candy" sounds like a cross between Nuno Canavarro and Whitehouse. Brussels' Sky H1 slows "After Dark" way down with some barely there auto-tuned vocals helping to bring things into the fold.

TOTAL CONTROL Laughing At The System 12"
Total Control's caustic charm is stunning and oblique. Laughing At The System, is a succinct statement, but it feels like the sharpest thing they've ever assembled. Written and recorded over the past couple of years in various lounge rooms, bedrooms, and rehearsal studios, across Melbourne, regional Victoria, and Western Australia. Far from cynical, but earnestly neurotic, the potency of the atmosphere that Total Control has mustered across Laughing At The System registers as a deeply commanding, though bleak, psychedelic-ism for the future.

KLEIN, NICK Lowered Flaming Coffin 12"
Nick Klein's Lowered Flaming Coffin was recorded in Brooklyn, NY, on an economic set-up: a Spartan Modular synth and Korg MS-20. Starting on an almost uplifting note with the glistening melodic cycles of "Burning Mattresses", the asphyxia soon takes over. "Peña Adobe" has the panicked terror of an archaic ringtone hitting the volume of an air raid siren, "Smelling The Sheets" skulks rather than bangs, its momentum stifled and edgy. At nearly 14 minutes, the disfigured rave stabs and blunted military tattoo-snare pf "The God In Vodka" furiously pace into a clammy, toxic rush.

Yeah You are MYKL JAXN and Elvin Brandhi. ACOLYTES Rupture LP
Departing from the band-based setup of previous releases, Acolytes continue their exploration of loop-based paradigms with Rupture. The release expands upon the murky jarring patchwork aesthetic of the 2012 release, Known Nonsense, replacing brooding song structures with a more driving, visceral, and relentless sound. Rupture encapsulates the paranoia and angst felt in an increasingly unrecognizable world. Liquified rhythms attempt to define an unmappable headspace typified by IO overload and wired hyperactivity, become mired in deep delays and sedate unease. Ostensible computer music, tracks such as "Feelings 2", deviate from the clinical sensibilities associated with the genre, like on "On The Grid", where out-of-sync drums and synth lines in elliptic orbits take it to messier lo-fi territories with no defined sense of shape or tempo. Edition of 200.

LIBEREZ Way Through Vulnerability LP
Southend-on-Sea experimental outfit Liberez deliver Way Through Vulnerability, the end result of a year-and-a-half long recording process, an amorphous new line up, and advanced studies in sound collage. On Way Through Vulnerability new members Reay, Saunders, and Ugarteburu channel the projects previous outings on Alter and Night School by conveying the same firm grounding in rhythm, though this time via flamenco time signatures and eerie, repetitive clapping. At times sounding indebted to the "tribal ambient" of decades gone by, at times sounding fresh in their approach ("Here Is The Proof" is of note) the trio manage to export motifs from Italian avant-garde circles, UK industrial, and post-rock all at the same time. The sound design on "Derelict Intentions" makes heavy use of background ambience and bleak, world-weary minimalism to lull us into a false sense of calm before harsh and unexpected blurts of noise break the equilibrium. In doing so they swiftly side-step any preconceptions of "easy listening" and opt instead to drag us deeper down into their own dark waters. At times we almost seem to delve into lost theatre soundtrack territory; fragmented neo-classical elements dance with punchy drum machines ("Cara En La Foto Pt II") and things draw to a close with the end credit worthy swansong of the album's title track. The group repeatedly utilize Basque country language, Hungarian dialect, and ancient Russian to lend their compositions a cross-cultural underpinning and eschew any clear geographic origin, a decision which all but adds to the perplexities of their unique brand of electro-acoustic purgatory.

DE BABALON, CHRISTOPH Hectic Shakes 12"
Four-track EP from veteran Hamburg producer Christoph De Babalon. CDB has tirelessly explored the intersections of breakcore, illbient, and drum and bass. "Shakes and Shivers" fixates itself on deceptively playful grooves with eerie, night bus-to-nowhere atmospherics whilst opening cut "Harakiri" manages to distort familiar jungle tropes into something even die hard devotees of the sound will find fresh. The EP closes with what an homage to '90s ambient techno in a ruff, post-hardcore fashion. Skittering drums weave in and out of longing, futurist synth lines, and enough breakdowns to satisfy the dancefloor.

APPAREL WAX LP001 2x12"
Apparel Music announce the arrival of Apparel Wax LP001, the label's first LP which opens a new catalog dedicated to albums. Apparel Music began to search the tracks for this 2x12" with the same guideline ever: the love for the music not thinking about the charts. The amazing artists who are taking part in the collective knew since day one that they had to put on a mask if they wanted to partake in this adventure; knowing how important is to "appear" nowadays, the label wanted to prove that they could make great music without the help of the big names -- So far so good. For LP001, they picked amongst the different souls that house music has got, from disco to lo-fi, always focusing on their "jazzy" watermark and giving the opportunity to the artists to prove their interpretative skills on this theme once again. In February of 2019, Apparel Music will be blowing nine candles: no better time to celebrate with a new, fresh, and energetic record. Listening to this record is like walking around a house where the walls are made of the same concrete but every room has a different atmosphere that you can absorb in each distinct vibration. "A1" draws inspiration from the foundations of disco music and it's the best way to kick it off in style, followed by "A2" which is a groovy cinematic variation on the motif. "B1" is inspired by UK's broken-beats from the early '00s, wisely blended with deep keys and spacey synths while "B2" closes the first vinyl slab in the best possible Apparel-ish way, with a track that puts together all the elements that make the label recognizable: solid rhythmics, jazzy vibes, and groovy vocals. The second vinyl begins with "C1" and brings you back to the roots with a tune that tastes like a new version of a classic house sensation with a neat kick drum dialoguing with a crispy clap, alongside alluring vocal samples. Moving on to "C2", you'll find another room, another atmosphere which is pure deep. Flip the vinyl and you'll see pictures on the walls from one of our favorite movies from the eighties: if you listen carefully, "D1" will recall familiar words... "Wax on, Wax off..." With "D2" you step into the lo-fi, a sound that takes back to the present the warmth of the past in a new classy-chic fashion.

BILLOW OBSERVATORY III: Chroma/Contour LP
LP version. Blue vinyl. III: Chroma/Contour is the third album from Billow Observatory, the collaborative project of Danish producer Jonas Munk (Manual, Ulrich Schnauss collaborator, and more) and Michigan native Jason Kolb (Auburn Lull). The album's nine tracks eschew the pulse and rhythm that defined the duo's previous effort -- II: Plains/Patterns (VISTA 002CD/LP, 2017) -- in favor of sparse melodic possibilities and a more abstract palette of sounds. Chroma/Contour suggests looking both 20 years forward and twenty years back, while forgetting the present altogether. Much of the album plays out as a study in minimalism: the texture and color of each sound is being explored in miniscule detail, with enough space in the sound field to allow each sonic constituent to breathe fully. There's a conceptual dimension to several tracks on the album, with guitars, analog synths and voices being mangled by samplers, computer software, and a broken dictaphone into pure abstraction. But simultaneously there's a melodic undercurrent, revealing a deeply emotional aspect of the music. Tracks such as "Color In The Six", "Iris", and "Soft Logic" convey a melancholic sense of awe, a profoundly calming glimpse of the sublime. As with the best ambient music, the power of these nine pieces lies in their open-endedness and suggestive potential. Rather than imposing on the listener and presenting a flawless, fully-formed aural landscape, the music creates an evocative space for the listener to explore and expand in. RIYL: Aphex Twin's Selected Ambient Works, Stars Of The Lid, Slowdive's Pygmalion (1995), Brian Eno.

TINY RUINS Olympic Girls CD
"A rare blend of eloquent lyrical craft and explorative musicianship, the songs of Tiny Ruins are etched into the memories of crowds and critics worldwide. Traversing influences that cross genre and era, the artistry of Hollie Fullbrook and her band spans delicate folk, lustrous dream pop and ebullient psychedelia. Building on the sparse arrangements and 'a novelist's eye for detail' (Uncut) cultivated over the past several years, the group's greatly anticipated third album Olympic Girls is replete with vital lyricism and galvanizing rhythms. Sparkling electric guitar jangles pull against the unique thrum of Fullbrook's acoustic as the cryptic poetry she is known for rings out. Hollie Fullbrook is no stranger to acclaim. Debut album Some Were Meant For Sea (2011) saw her name on billboards, playlists and blogs worldwide. The album's clutch of 'gorgeous vignettes' (BBC) put the artist on the map. Second album Brightly Painted One earned more accolades, championed by The New York Times, NPR and David Lynch, and winning Best Alternative Album at the New Zealand Music Awards in 2014. 'An album of quiet, devastating beauty', wrote Pop Matters. The album saw Fullbrook join forces with producer Tom Healy, whom, alongside long-time tour-mate bassist Cass Basil and drummer Alex Freer, Fullbrook has worked and toured with ever since. While spanning continents, the band won fans in critics, crowds and became a sought-after collaborator. A New York recording session culminated in the EP Hurtling Through (2015) with indie-rock legend Hamish Kilgour (The Clean), while 2016 single 'Dream Wave' was recorded and produced by award-winning cult filmmaker and musician David Lynch. Headhunted by Lorde for the Hunger Games soundtrack blueprint she curated, Fullbrook teamed up with legendary filmmaker Lynch for the collaboration. This album was made over a drawn out period of spontaneity and experimentation, stridently reaching beyond Fullbrook's formerly minimalist domain. Production from Tom Healy and Fullbrook is exercised with muscular aplomb; marrying the intricately woven poetics of Leonard Cohen, the shimmering dream-pop landscapes of Beach House or Mazzy Star, and the off-kilter experimental pop of Broadcast or John Cale."

C'MON TIGRE Racines 2LP/BOOK
Double LP version; 180 gram vinyl; gatefold sleeve; includes 84-page book. Tradition and experimentation are two familiar territories that C'mon Tigre, a duo who find their identity by working with musicians from all over the world, can balance between very well. As they did for their debut album (2014), they have put together a multicolored collective for their second record Racines. The title is a French word that means "roots", referring to the musical roots in which C'mon Tigre's feet, head and heart are immersed, and from which their contaminated tracks sprout to create unusual and original sound environments. On Racines the sounds of the Mediterranean -- the sea of their land -- intersect, intertwine, and overlap with a kaleidoscope of other sounds and a new approach based. They explain: "on the type of work we had done when we rearranged the first album for live shows, by emphasizing the synthetic part of our tracks". This time around they did it from the very beginning: "The composition of the pieces immediately included the use of machines and synthesizers as a basis for acoustic instruments. The goal was to reprocess the terrain of Mediterranean influences that was undoubtedly our starting point". Imagine a work in progress where bass and guitars interact with woodwind, synths, percussions, vibraphones, dipping the listener into a sensual and hypnotic musical journey. Sailing from the Mediterranean basin and being guided by the fascination for Africa and the Middle East, C'mon Tigre give rise to a personal language, made up of mixtures with jazz, Afrojazz, the rhythms of hip hop, funk, and '70s disco. All without ever confining their songs to one style, but pushing the exploration as much as possible, into a dimension that every journey worthy of this name should encompass. "With the musicians we work with the exchange and experimentation continue till the end, the songs can take different directions at any time". The result is a mixed, cosmopolitan record, which escapes from any label for the affirmation of a free attitude. The attitude that led C'mon Tigre to seek a connection with dancefloor culture, even if considered only as an evocation to revisit in an absolutely personal way. "Underground Lovers" features vocals by Mick Jenkins. Other collaborations include musicians like DRB of Drumetrics and The Tiptons Sax Quartet.

DEMARINIS, PAUL Songs Without Throats 2LP
Black Truffle announces the release of Songs Without Throats, a collection of recordings from Paul DeMarinis. A key figure in the history of electronic music since the 1970s and collaborator with the likes of Robert Ashley, David Behrman, and David Tudor, DeMarinis is a pioneer in the development of gallery sound installation and digital music technologies. All tracks have been selected in collaboration with the artist, focusing on DeMarinis's exploration of synthesized voice and the digital analysis and manipulation of speech sounds, recorded during the late '70s up until 1995. Drawing together tracks dispersed on compilations along with a number of pieces previously unheard in any form, Songs Without Throats offers a mind-blowing, revelatory look into DeMarinis's alternately accessible and uncompromising production. Opening with a mesmerizing piece from 1978 pairing the voice and tamboura of Anne Klingensmith with letters spat out by a Speak n' Spell to the accompaniment of the randomized melodic patterns of DeMarinis's homebuilt electronic instrument "The Pygmy Gamelan", the record then dispenses with the live human voice in favor of its recorded and synthetic doubles. One can follow DeMarinis's restless probing of the possibilities of technology, from the hacked Speak n' Spell (which gives us the austere "Et Tu, Klaatu" (1979), another duet with Klingensmith, on bowed psaltery, in which the toy's synthetic voice is stretched into an alien song) through to the use of digital samples manipulated with home computer technology in the early 1990s (including a remarkable collage piece that weaves a rare recording of Stalin's voice and bird-like electronic twittering derived from its formant - glides into a rich tapestry of samples reflective of the dictator's musical life). In between is a rich sampling of DeMarinis's signature work with speech melodies -- usually unnoticed melodic inflections that lie within speech patterns -- which he analyses and translates into synthesized musical accompaniment. These pieces draw on a wide variety of sources, which range from the hilarious to the menacing, combining elements as seemingly unlikely as Beethoven's piano sonatas and the sounds of '80s synth-pop. The results are an extraordinary combination of the alien and the familiar. As DeMarinis himself characterizes his work with vocal synthesis, this is "a kind of signal that simultaneously carried and obscured meaning and ideation, even as it created a sound world totally alien in esthetic". Deluxe gatefold sleeve with archival images and liners by DeMarinis; design by Stephen O'Malley. Mastered and cut by Rashad Becker at D&M, Berlin.

Sonically too, there is a sense of evolution but also of coming full circle: the cyberpunk techno of Argabright's celebrated William Gibson soundtracks, and extrapolations of Dark Pool's neuromantic yearning cut with glimpses of the thrash and industrial rock energies that animated Black Rain's incendiary live shows in the early '90s.

TUTTI, COSEY FANNI Tutti CD
Cosey Fanni Tutti's Tutti is comprised of eight soundscapes: an audio self-portrait comprising of manipulated sound recordings from Cosey's life, music and art: "It's the only album I've made that is an all-encompassing statement expressing the totality of my being. A sense of the past in relation to the present and everything in between." These eight pieces were originally conceived as the soundtrack to the autobiographical film Harmonic Coumaction (2017), and performed live in February 2017, part of a series of events that accompanied the COUM Transmissions retrospective which opened Hull UK City of Culture 2017. Later that year, Harmonic Coumaction was presented as an audio-visual installation for Cosey Fanni Tutti's solo exhibition at Cabinet Gallery, London. "Working on the COUM Transmissions exhibition coincided with writing my autobiography, collating archive material and re-engaging with my past. My work is a continuum, the past feeding the present and vice-versa. The album is an interpretation of my past and present, of my understanding the shifting perceptions of how they inform one another. One form creating another through a metamorphic process." On Tutti, the music has been updated and enhanced with elements of the original tracks re-recorded and further processed specifically to create a unique stand-alone document, separate to the live performance and installation. Recorded at Cosey Fanni Tutti's studio in Norfolk, the album, as on her debut release, Time To Tell (CTI TTTLP2017, 2017), merges Cosey's art with her exploration of sound. The album's autobiographical theme is not locked into any specific time or place; the voices, instruments and sounds together span decades of my life. In this context my name Tutti shifts from its role as a noun to perfectly represent the concept of the album, also acting as sign for me the artist. Tutti is Cosey Fanni Tutti's only solo release since Time To Tell. Time To Tell was recently given its first release on vinyl; the interim years have seen a blisteringly prolific output as an artist and musician. Renowned for her art, her work in the sex industry, as co-founder of industrial music and Throbbing Gristle, and her pioneering electronic music solo and as Chris & Cosey, Carter Tutti, and Carter Tutti Void, she has created throughout with the motto "my life is my art, my art is my life".

2019 repress. Zinging, absolutely deadly seven-track EP from Mica Levi on her return to DDS. Features three tracks with Tirzah (including the much sought-after "GO"), plus a dextrous Demdike Stare edit of "I Dare You" to chase up 2014's acclaimed Feeling Romantic Feeling Tropical Feeling Ill LP (DDS 011LP, 2015) for mutant dancefloors and sun-kissed headphone journeys. Smitten by the hugely addictive, brilliantly slippery two-step twister on "GO" (there's been a video online for this track since 2011) Demdike suggested the cut for release on DDS, and were subsequently privileged to peruse the unique space-time folds and dance/pop sampledelia of Mica's archive. As they also found out whilst compiling her last solo LP; it's a deeply rewarding experience to explore the Mica's output: immersing themselves in her peerless world of refractive colors, sawn-off textures and teasing arrangements. They've emerged with a joyously unhinged party-ready EP, traversing the mercurial two-step viscosity of Mica and Tirzah's "GO", to their addictively sticky ohrwurm, "I Dare You", and the free cosmic pop whorl of "Trip6love", before taking in the clanking ragga jag of "More Red" with Brother May, aka the London-based MC who voiced Mica's Fact Mix 444 in 2014. The infectious piano, cinematic sirens, it was no doubt that it was one of (famed New York nightclub) The Tunnel's most signature records. As Cipha Sounds put it - 'How could it not rip in The Tunnel? Just classic. "Shook Ones Part I" was actually pretty big in the Tunnel, but "Part II" ripped everything.' VA The Roundup Part V 2x12"
Rounding up five years of Heist Recordings also means the label are releasing the fifth version of their Roundup. Part IV (HEIST 029LP, 2018) was full of highlights, with Fouk remixing Nachtbraker's anthem "Hamdi" and Alma Negra going all tribal on Nebraska's "Big Plate Chicken". For Part V, Heist displays a lot of new faces that made the label in the past year, bringing a fresh set of combinations and a couple of really nice revisions of the tracks. First up is Detroit Swindle's take on Heist's latest signing, Hugo Mari. They chose to remix "Change Ur Ways", beefing up the dreamy original. They focus on a simple but effective grainy groove and added a twist on the bass to give a more "warehouse" feel to it and play around with the lovely detuned keys and vocal chops of the original to great effect. Alma Negra show you just how loose their limbs are with a Rhodes-filled version of Kassian's acid surprise "Bad Habit", while the full B side is dedicated to Pitto's personal take on Adryiano's classic house track, "Me And You And Her". His version takes the track into a new territory that lies somewhere between Balearic and dreamhouse -- whatever it is, it's got a lovely vibe where the vocal is complemented by airy pads and a touch of acid. Kassian on their turn, have done a great job on taking Pitto's "Treat Me Like A Fool" into 4x4 house territory. They've opted for a sub-heavy club track where reverbed hits and the vocal take turns over a solid house groove. Next up is Adryiano. He's picked Detroit Swindle's moody-but-heavy album track "Cut U Loose" and does what he does best: a steady and nicely distorted, filtered house groove that packs quite a punch. The final track of this compilation really is a great pair of artists: Hugo Mari and Alma Negra. Hugo takes the tropical warmth of "This Is The Place" and adds a subtle punch with a smart percussion loop and some added pressure on the low end. So there you go. Another year, another Roundup. 180 gram vinyl.

HILL OF VISION Evolution EP 12"
Milan-based collective Just This continue their mission into the darkest territories of electronic music with the Evolution EP from Hill Of Vision, featuring an Alex.Do remix. Title track is a bleak, disorienting journey through muffled acoustics and gloomy surroundings narrated by an eerie vocal. For his remix, Alex.Do reinterprets the tension of the original into a floating dancefloor weapon. "Signs" is a stripped-back swirl of strange melodic inflections and cyclical effects, whilst "Land Of Vision" dissects the framework of atypical techno into an immersive doomsday soundtrack.

ZODD Operationally Ready Dead LP
If one were looking for a sound that could encapsulate the myriad forms that hardcore takes in 2018 one could do a lot worse than slam a record on by Zodd, who have emerged from the vibrant Singapore punk/hardcore scene in the wake of bands like Vaarallinen, Sial, and Lubricant. Operationally Ready Dead demonstrates an approach based in a vicious pogo-thump but drawing in elements of hardcore's various strands, with echoing screams ripping painfully through chomping riffs: weird enough for the freakpunx, hard enough for the mosh kids. Chaotic and blown out, squealing and stumbling, but never losing its dynamism, Operationally Ready Dead is ten tracks of contemporary anxiety shaped into hardcore anger, touching upon themes of apocalyptic angst, psychopaths with uniforms and without, and society's born corrupt, all the while getting darker still. Zodd provide a searing soundtrack to this and more. Cover designed by Nicky Rat with a lyric insert designed by the band.

VA Displaced Soundtracks Vol 2 2LP
Life And Death announce the sophomore edition of the Displaced Soundtracks. Continuing on the thematic thread of sound tracking an imaginary short movie, label founder DJ Tennis aka Manfredi Romano, asks some of the greatest contemporary club producers to take on the task of interpreting this idea in their own unique style. Romano explains that "the score is a translation of our imagination, memories and emotions into music, with no protocols." Opening the soundtrack, Vatican Shadow swaps his thunderous techno for a more cosmic and gentle approach, setting the tone for an equally serene soundscape from London-based DJ and producer Midland. Japanese Future Terror head honcho, DJ Nobu, layers dense cerebral textures exuding the punk spirit of Life And Death. A similar rule defying energy can be heard by Ninos De Brasil who fuse carnival percussions with straight up old school techno. Both Scuba and Uchi bring the futuristic synths of a space age tomorrow we've all been waiting for. German producer Isolee interprets the task with his minimal productions and Italian producer Cosmo closes the compilation with psychedelic soundscapes turning into a distorted gabber missile. Romano proves yet again that Life And Death is a label which evolves through each reincarnation of itself, never failing to impress. Gatefold sleeve.

VIAN, PEDRO Pedro Vian LP
On Pedro Vian's second album, the now Amsterdam-based artist opens up a new sonic chapter of his life, running through depths of emotions and feelings, traversing moments of euphoria, fury, serenity, hope, and love. Recorded between 2014 and 2018, the LP opens with a melodic flourish, drops down through mournful vocal driven pieces and lands on fast moving synths across a set of 12 deeply personal tracks. A follow-up to Vian's 2016 acclaimed debut album Beautiful Things You Left Us For Memories (MODERN 005LP, 2016), this sophomore LP shows the breadth and maturity of Vian's sound, falling in between the cracks of downtempo electronica, ambient, and post rock. Pedro discloses: "I have tried to be sincere, transparent and pure. During the recording process I have avoided artificiality. I do not like the overproduction of music. I like to feel the naturalness and the essence of the beat of the instruments. I like to look inside until I find something real with which to communicate." "Seneca" features Laia Nadal.

ROBERTS, NEIL MCDERMOTT & TARTINE DE CLOUS, ALASDAIR Au Cube 2x10"
2x10" version. Alasdair Roberts has worked with Drag City Records for some 20 years, releasing more than ten records featuring both interpretations of traditional songs and his own songwriting. He has played with Will Oldham, Jason Molina, and many others, and is now part of The Furrow Collective. In addition to being a fine fiddler in the Scottish traditional style, Neil McDermott is currently researching the musical and political engagement of the 1960s Scottish folk scene with the anti-nuclear movement. Tartine de Clous (Geoffroy Dudouit, Thomas Georget, and Guillaume Maupin) is a singing trio originally from the department of Charente in western France. Following in the footsteps of some of the great French groups of the late 20th century folk revival (such as Mélusine and La Bamboche), they sing largely unaccompanied three-part harmony arrangements of the traditional songs of France... and Scotland! In early 2016, Alasdair Roberts spoke of his admiration for Tartine de Clous' first LP, Sans Folklore (2015), in an article in English folk magazine, fRoots. After a first musical encounter in Glasgow in January 2017, alongside local fiddler Neil McDermott, the five of them reunited in December 2017. They explored a common set of songs, French, Scottish, and Roberts originals, and recorded them live, with an audience, at the Cube Microplex, an amazing arts venue and progressive social wellbeing enterprise in central Bristol. Recorded live by Neil McDermott at Cube Cinema, Bristol on December 8th and 9th 2017; "Rosie Anderson" recorded at the Old Dentist, London. Artwork by Gwénola Carrère (Brussels). MONTGOMERY + JESSICA MOSS, ROY Last Year's Man (Leonard Cohen Cover) / After Vermeer 10"
Roy Montgomery on the release: "My first deep exposure to Leonard Cohen was the Bird on a Wire documentary by Tony Palmer (1974), which was, against the odds, broadcast on public television in New Zealand around 1974 or 1975. At age 15 or 16 I thought it was too dark. A few years later, in the late '70s, I wanted things darker. The first Cohen LP was very clever but a little too 'up'. The second was too public and political for me. Songs of Love and Hate (1971) seemed more honest, more about personal failure. I liked it, although Cohen tended to disown it, especially 'Dress Rehearsal Rag' and 'Last Year's Man', neither of which he performed live later on. I like 'Last Year's Man' for the same reason I like Nick Drake's 'Poor Boy'. It wallows and parodies at the same time. I came across the Suzuki Omnichord OM-27 because it was mentioned in relation to another Canadian, Joni Mitchell. It looked like a mystery box of potentially very good or very bad sounds, like a Bontempi chord organ customized for space travel in a Stanley Kubrick film. Irresistible... I was fortunate to meet Jessica Moss because of the 12-hour drone event at Le Guess Who? Festival in Utrecht in November 2017. I thought it would be cool to jam with some of the other people scheduled to play their own pieces so I asked the organisers, Bob Helleur and Jacob Hagelaars, to sound out the other droners a few weeks before the festival. Jessica replied, I sent a sample piece, and we talked, more than rehearsed, a day before the performance. We did our piece live and then some months later I sent her a recorded piece to which she added her magical playing."Personnel: Roy Montgomery - vocal and keyboard; Jessica Moss - violin; Emma Johnston and Arnie van Bussel - backing vocal on "Last Year's Man". Recorded mainly with a first generation Suzuki Omnichord OM-27 onto a Tascam DP-01FX 8-track Portastudio, January to March 2018. Illustration by Gwénola Carrère, Brussels, October 2018. Mixed by Arnie van Bussel at Nighshift Studios, May 2018; Mastered by Harris Newman, Grey Market Mastering, Montréal, May 2018.

EFDEMIN New Atlantis 2LP
Double LP version. "Oh, lovely appearance of death, No sight upon earth is so fair; Not all the gay pageants that breathe, Can with a dead body compare." --Charles Wesley, A Funeral Hymn for a Believer, 1780So begins New Atlantis, the fourth full-length album by longtime Berghain resident Efdemin, aka Phillip Sollmann. The words, sung by '60s California art icon William T. Wiley and embedded in glowing drone swells, set an otherworldly tone for Sollmann's first solo release on Ostgut Ton. Over eight tracks, New Atlantis oscillates between fast, kaleidoscopic techno, multi-layered drones, and acoustic instrumentation, fusing for the first time Sollmann's deep dancefloor productions as Efdemin with his sound art and experimental music projects. The latter include 2017's Harry Partch-inspired Monophonie performance and 2018's Panama / Suez EP with Oren Ambarchi and Konrad Sprenger (ATON 001EP, 2018). Long drawn to utopian musical traditions, Sollmann took inspiration for New Atlantis from Francis Bacon's unfinished 17th century novel of the same name, which describes a fictional island devoted to social progress through the synthesis of art, science, technology, and fashion. In the story, Bacon imagines futuristic "sound houses", which contain musical instruments capable of recreating the entirety of the sounds of the universe; a 400-year-old prophesy of today's digital sonic reality. Through Sollmann's lens, Bacon's vision ebbs and flows over 50 minutes in varying speeds and colors, emerging as a tapestry of different utopian musical traditions -- through billowing synth lines, early Detroit techno, resonant wooden percussion, trance, droning organs, dulcimer, electric guitars, hurdy-gurdy, just intonation, poetry, hymns, and murmuring voices. Sometimes they merge into epic, rhythmic journeys like the 14-minute long title track; other times they appear as a briefly open sound portal ("Temple"), or in the forlorn human voice on "Oh, Lovely Appearance Of Death", calling to be freed from jail of the human body and pass into the afterlife. Like previous Efdemin albums on Dial, New Atlantis veers off the techno path to explore other musical territory. Here however, Sollmann occasionally abandons the club entirely, returning only to push its boundaries with other instruments, mythologies and psychedelic story telling. Mastering by Rashad Becker at Dubplates & Mastering, Berlin.

EARTHEATER IRISIRI CD
Eartheater (aka Queens based artist Alexandra Drewchin) distills foley-filled digital production, a three-octave vocal range, and classical composition into works suspended between obsessively detailed sonic tapestries and almost recklessly romantic and gestural electronica. IRISIRI, Eartheater's third full-length record, lays out a shifting network of abstract song craft, laced with sudden structural upheavals, and collisions of mutated tropes from numerous sonic vocabularies. Modular synth staccato plucks hammer out in arrhythmic spirals over a carefully muzzled grid of pumping kicks -- unleashed in unpredictable disruptions. Technoid stabs mingle with crushed black metal. An icy OS reads poetry against a bed of granular synth swells. Drewchin's sirening whistle-tone vocals drape over relentless harp arpeggios. Eartheater confounds expectations of structure and resolution before deciding to thread in a sugary melody that snaps us back into some conception, however hazy, of pop songwriting. Guest spots on IRISIRI charge Drewchin's ideas with concordant energies, from the stark imagist poetry of Odwalla1221 on "Inhale Baby", to the sheer lacerating force of Moor Mother's unflinching verse on "MMXXX". Drewchin's lyrics, strewn with flourishes of wordplay and symbolism, explore themes of her autodidactic experience -- playing with the tutelage of the "pupil" within the "iris" mirrored in the palindrome IRISIRI. One motif appears as a song name, "C.L.I.T.", which Drewchin breaks down into "Curiosity Liberates Infinite Truth". The acronym stands as a microcosm of the Eartheater project in its holistic combination of idiosyncratic spirituality and cheekiness, presented with an earnest confidence that some could consider confrontational. In spite of this lexicon's maximal effect, it comes from a very personal place as she states, "curiosity has had to be the currency of my education". On "OS In Vitro", she reminds us that "these tits are just a side-effect," and "You can't compute her," as if to acknowledge the clouding effect of sexuality and technology in the face of a higher self-significance. In the record's accompanying video piece, "Claustra", she slides between "the owning of my loneliness" and "the end of the loaning of my onliness", encapsulating images of self-purifying isolation and the rejection of artistic exploitation with the flip of two syllables. The transmuting landscape of IRISIRI is riddled with evocative poetry and evidence of Drewchin's development as an artist since her debut in 2015. Features photography by Elise Gallant. EARTHEATER IRISIRI LP
LP version. Eartheater (aka Queens based artist Alexandra Drewchin) distills foley-filled digital production, a three-octave vocal range, and classical composition into works suspended between obsessively detailed sonic tapestries and almost recklessly romantic and gestural electronica. AMNESIA SCANNER Another Life CD
Another Life is the debut album from Amnesia Scanner, the Berlin-based music duo, performing arts group, experience design studio, and production house, created by Finnish-born Ville Haimala and Martti Kalliala. Founded in 2014, Amnesia Scanner's approach is informed by a unique perspective on technology and the way it mediates contemporary experience. System vulnerabilities, information overload, and sensory excess inform their work, which has found a home in both clubs and galleries. Building on their mixtape AS Live [ ] [ ] [ ] [ ] [ ] (2014), Amnesia Scanner's critically-acclaimed audio play Angels Rig Hook (2015) laced a potpourri of dancefloor tactics with a machinic narrator. Their dual EPs for Young Turks, AS and AS Truth (2016), distilled this immersive environment into an abrasive collection of cryptorave tools. The most striking detail of Another Life is Amnesia Scanner's use of both human and inhuman voices. The latter is provided by the latest addition to the production unit, a disembodied voice called Oracle, which represents the sentience that has emerged from Amnesia Scanner. Oracle's vocal performance ranges from exuberant mania to anxious dread and beyond. Coupled with the pop song structures that Amnesia Scanner employs for the first time, the avant-EDM productions of Another Life evocatively explore a schizophrenic present marked by narratives of a slow apocalypse or salvation via technology. Indeed, the lullaby of "AS Another Life" swings between trill hope and casual threat, lending a precarious gait to the song's staggering rhythm. The album's first single, "AS Chaos", is its most powerfully direct track, with Pan Daijing's English and Mandarin vocals taking over for Oracle. At its peak intensity, as in "AS Faceless", Amnesia Scanner's doombahton overheats into nu-metal-gabba. Amnesia Scanner has presented work at art institutions such as ICA London, HKW Berlin, and the Serpentine Gallery Marathon in London. They collaborate with PWR Studio for their design and visual direction. The AS live experience is co-created with Stockholm-based Canadian designer Vincent De Belleval. When unplugged from the Amnesia Scanner stream, Haimala works as a composer and producer with a wide range of musical and visual artists, and Kalliala co-directs the think tank Nemesis. Features photography by Satoshi Fujiwara, and visual direction from PWR Studio. Mastered by Jeremy Cox.

OBJEKT Cocoon Crush CD
Objekt has continued to challenge conventions with his club output (Objekt #4 (2017) and Kern Vol. 3 (KERN 003CD, 2016)), while maintaining his reputation as a DJ who deploys impeccable technical finesse in crafting elaborate narratives from a diverse and challenging palette of electronic music. Written between 2014 and 2018 in Berlin and on the road, Cocoon Crush once again sees Objekt jettisoning the functional requirements of the dancefloor. Marking a further evolution from the youthful exuberance of Flatland (PAN 060CD/LP, 2014), Cocoon Crush explores a more introspective side, with themes of human interaction resonating throughout the record as it ruminates on a spectrum of complex moods rooted in four years of sometimes turbulent personal experience. Cocoon Crush represents an aesthetic departure from Flatland's largely synthetic tonality, drawing from organic source material and natural textures to illustrate perplexing and unfamiliar sceneries in photorealistic detail. On Cocoon Crush, Objekt diverges further still from his musical influences to craft the purest manifestation of his own musical personality to date: an intriguing and enigmatic album whose reference points are hard to pin down, in which ghostly synth passages weave through mind-bending, weighty drums, and ASMR-triggering Foley collages scrape and sparkle. Through meticulous sculpting, Objekt traces a rich and impressionistic journey through claustrophobia, hope, guilt, anxiety and joy, nested in layers of sonic detail which reward with every listen. Mastered by Rashad Becker, photography by Kasia Zacharko, and layout by Bill Kouligas.

OSIRIS Osiris LP
2019 repress. First-ever vinyl reissue of this prog/psych masterpiece by cult Arabian band Osiris, their 1982 debut album. A killer blend of '70s-sounding hard, progressive/psychedelic sounds with long, ripping Minimoog and analog synth attacks smashed into mellow vibes and Arabian folky touches, with hard lead guitar, exotic percussion, floating rhythm section, and English vocals. Osiris formed in Bahrain, the small island country in the Persian Gulf, in the late '70s, but its story goes back to 1969, when talented brothers Mohamed and Nabil Alsadeqi formed a funk rock band called Witch. The band broke up when Mohamed left to pursue his studies in Texas, while his brother Nabil left for London. Upon returning to Bahrain in 1980, the two brothers decided to form the first progressive rock band from Bahrain. It was not easy to find like-minded musicians in their town, but they succeeded, with help from Mohammed Shafii (bass), Sami Al-Jamea (keyboards), Mohamed Amin Kooheji (guitar, bass, vocals), and Abdul Razzak Aryan (keyboards). Mohamed and Nabil began working out an original repertoire that would fuse musical complexity, melodic richness, and Arab culture. They took the name "Osiris" from Egyptian mythology, not only for its sound but also for its associations with Arab culture, youth, and fertility. But the definitive Osiris line-up came up when they added a charismatic singer named Isa Janahi. Osiris made their live debut at the end of 1981. Janahi wore flashy, colored clothes and capes and captivated the audience with his presence on stage. The group also used lasers, a light show, and smoke bombs, all deftly handled by friends of the band. Osiris was recorded at the only eight-track studio in Bahrain at the time. It was recorded and mixed in just three days. As there weren't any record pressing plants in Bahrain, the band had to press the albums in the Philippines. They sold 1000 copies in Bahrain, but a few made their way to the USA and the UK, appearing in some rare records list by those in the know. Osiris will please not only those into classic prog-rock in the vein of Camel, Yes, or Pink Floyd, but also those for looking for exotic, psychedelic sounds and beats. Master tape sound. Includes insert with photos and liner notes.

PRESIDENT BONGO & OTTAR S. Quadrantes 2LP
Three may be a mystical number and seven a holy one, but two and four and sixteen and so-forth are the numbers of science and rationality. When deprived of instruments, only with logic at hand, it is but natural to split subjects in two, to split them again and again, until the desired number or amount is reached or can be added up from the newly created parts. Divide a circle, first in half, then again, into four equal parts --into quadrants. On a compass, each represents the space between cardinal points, from North to East or from South to West. On the face of a clock it represents a quarter of an hour. On the weather charts of yore, they represent gradations of cloudiness. The precision of the quadrants is attractive, so experiment. You have precise instruments now, so divide the cycles into equal parts based not only on two but on three or other prime numbers. Some cycles are longer than others but they all revolve at the same speed and thus exciting, infectious polyrhythms are created. Like numerous clocks ticking away in a hotel lobby, only the minutes are sometimes made up of 60 seconds, sometimes 40, sometimes 17. This is how you tick away: different people in the same park on a beautiful day, minding our own business but inhabiting the same world. A cacophony of emotions and feelings. Hundreds of hearts, sometimes beating in time, sometimes singing in harmony; all spread across the horizon, each happy or sad in his or her quadrant. Edition of 300 (hand-numbered).

Remixed 01 is about transferring the pieces back into abstract space, and each remixer does it in his very own way. Alessandro Cortini's one-take live recording is a lesson in classical ambient music. Telefon Tel Aviv's remix is timelessly modern and extremely delicate sound design. Rather opposite concepts are coming from Surachai's brutal pattern design and Kangding Ray's expressive and analogously saturated repetitions for the dancefloor.

HELL FIRE Free Again CD
"Formed in recent years in San Francisco (though it may seem more likely that they hatched fresh out of a time travel portal from the mid-80s Bay Area thrash scene), Hell Fire have the classic look and sound of modern metal's halcyon days. Their sonic assault warmly condenses elements of Angel Witch, Iron Maiden, Rainbow, Exodus, Metallica, Riot, Virtue and Diamond Head into eight tracks of headbanging MUYA anthems. The free-wheelin' creativity and infectious vitality of Bay Area thrash is a moment forever locked in time, but its spirit lives on in this band's galloping guitar picks, soaring harmonies and blistering rhythms. The band's perfect hybrid of NWOBHM theatrics and American thrash attitude delivers a rousing and genuine expansion on sounds long lost to pointless battles over who can be the most 'extreme.' Hell Fire began when bass player Herman Bandala moved to San Francisco from Tijuana, Mexico, with the hopes of forming a heavy metal band. Herman posted an ad to Craigslist which caught the attention of guitarist Tony Campos. They bonded over a mutual love of '80s thrash and NWOBHM. Just before they entered the studio to record their debut album Metal Masses, Jake Nunn joined on vocals. The lineup continued to develop over time, finally solidifying with Nunn also taking up second guitar duties and drummer Mike Smith joining prior to recording Free Again. This sophomore album is being released for the first time on vinyl and remastered for CD and download. It was recorded over five days in Grass Valley, California, at engineer Tim Green's Louder Studios (The Fucking Champs, Melvins). Where Metal Masses showcased aesthetic nods to Metallica's Kill 'Em All album (as well as a cover photo brilliantly depicting a blurry hand speedily playing a Flying-V guitar), Free Again finds the band coming into their own with emphasis upon grooves, a beefier sound and tighter songs that expertly shift into new parts at the drop of a hat."

WARISH Warish 7"
"Imagine if Incesticide-era Nirvana were crossed with Static Age-era Misfits -- sinister low budget horror-rock with a visceral, twisted weirdness and bludgeoning riffs. Some might call it nightmarish, we call it Warish. Warish is a very newly-minted SoCal trio formed in early 2018 that has wasted no time making its presence known. The band formed when guitarist/vocalist Riley Hawk and drummer Bruce McDonnell decided they wanted to try their hand at something more distinct than they'd done previously. 'We wanted to do simpler riffs and a fun live show,' Riley explains. 'A little more punk, a little bit of grunge -- a little evil-ish.' Their sound takes cues from a variety of cool underground sounds and twists it all into an energetic and exciting fist to the face of dark fury. Hawk's effect-laden vocals hearken to early Butthole Surfers and David Yow's tortured caterwaul in Scratch Acid. The guitars are heavy and powerful, though decidedly not straightforward cookie-cutter punk; more like Cobain's and Buzz Osbourne's wiry contortions. The rhythms bash and pummel right through it all with aggressive force ensuring that nothing gets overly complicated and the horrors keep coming throughout this five-track, eleven-minute debut."

"Heat Exhaustion" is an exceptionally beautiful, beatless piece that drifts through drone-y pads and occasional fragments of minor key melody. Using the Tominori Hosoya moniker, "We Are Here" is another powerfully restrained piece that merges woody percussion with low key pads. Francis Harris adds his touch to "Heat Exhaustion" with his respectful "Reform" version.

MANDRAKE PADDLE STEAMER Pandemonium Shadow Show CD
Previously unreleased recordings from 1968/1970 by British quintessential psychedelic/progressive band Mandrake Paddle Steamer/Mandrake, culled from the band's archive of reel tapes and acetates. Pure late '60s UK psychedelic sound with early prog moves, plenty of Hammond, and fuzzed-out guitar with powerful vocals... Including such lost gems as the Barrett-Floyd sounding "The World Whistles By", killer psych-rockers like "Pandemonium Shadow Show" or "Doris The Piper", the mellotron-fueled "October Country", and more. Unlike other '60s British bands who changed their music to "psychedelic" or "progressive" with the time, MPS were born "progressive" from day one. Formed in 1967 in Walthamstow, London by a core of art school students, their members were Brian Engel, Martin Briley, Paula Riordan, Martin Hooker, and Barry Nightingale (later replaced by David Potts). During their short lifespan (1967-1970), MPS supported big names like Pink Floyd, The Nice, or Vanilla Fudge. They played at the Isle Of Wight Festival, had a residence at the Star Club in Germany and ran their own club night (Asgard). Signed to the Parlophone label (though the band was aiming to be part of the more progressive Harvest imprint) they released in 1969 the "Strange Walking Man" 45, recorded at Abbey Road and now widely considered a lost British psychedelic classic (check Rubbles, Perfumed Garden (PAPRBOX 007CD), etc.) Due to lack of promotion and interest from their record label, the 45 went nowhere. After some line-up changes and shortening their name to just Mandrake, the band definitively split in 1970. Pandemonium Shadow Show collects studio recordings registered by Mandrake Paddle Steamer/Mandrake during 1968/1970 at various London studios such as Regent, Orange, and other unknown locations. Some of these tracks had been previously included on several bootleg albums with inferior sound quality, wrong titles, and others, have remained unreleased until now. Includes insert with detailed liner notes by band member Paula Riordan and rare photos/memorabilia; Includes download card.

SHAVIT, AMI Yom Kippur 1973 LP
"The soundtrack of my mind. Sounds derived from the war which still and always live in my mind"Released in Sub Rosa's Early Electronic series, Yom Kippur 1973 is a previously unheard masterpiece of Israeli multimedia artist Ami Shavit. As a professor of both philosophy and art and established kinetic artist in the 1970s, Shavit was fascinated with new and interactive technologies. While mostly focusing on visual art and mixed-media installations, a trip to New York in 1972 introduced him to synthesizers and triggered his curiosity to do some explorations into the world of music or "sound" as he preferred to call it. Ami's research was focused on the concept of meditative music that would help people to relax and create a cozy mood associated to the alpha brain waves and biofeedback. Before starting his artistic career, like all Israeli citizens, he had to serve in the army to his personal regret. Shavit had an operational position, which meant a high probability to get involved in a so called "hot situation". When in 1973 the Yom Kippur war broke out, Ami was enlisted again and got the unfortunate opportunity to encounter, in Hanoch Levin's words "the dead". Being an operation officer, he was in charge of evacuating Israeli wounded officers from battlefields to hospitals. Some 6000 injured men passed through us during that war, he recalled one year later in a newspaper interview. "I witnessed some sights that I can hardly forget. On the one hand I felt that as an artist I had to express the war events, on the other hand I felt that this is an almost impossible mission. Only Goya and Picasso, in his Guernica, addressed this topic successfully." Yom Kippur is the final and seminal of Shavit's sound experiments ever recorded and now finally available to the world. It is an extraordinarily strong piece in which the hectic moods and terrific experiences of war are deeply transmitted to the listener. May all soldiers, who are often forced to go through traumatic experiences beyond their own will, find ways to artistically digest and process the unwanted memories.

LOUCA, MAURICE Elephantine LP
On Elephantine, Maurice Louca's new album released exclusively on Sub Rosa on vinyl LP, the Cairo-based musician guides a 12-piece ensemble through a 38-minute masterwork that might best be described as panoramic. Elements of free improvisation, Sun Ra's cosmic jazz, gorgeous Arabic melody, trancelike African and Yemeni music, and minimalism meet in his wholly unique compositional vision. Louca has in recent years garnered a global reputation through two previous solo albums and an expanding, evolving lineup of genre-defying collaborations. The Wire called his 2014 sophomore solo effort, Benhayyi Al-Baghbaghan (Salute the Parrot) (NAWA 002CD/LP/X-LP, 2014), "remarkable music-dense, driven and splashed with colour." In 2017, Lekhfa (MST 003CD/MST 4001LP), the debut by the trio of Louca and vocalists Maryam Saleh and Tamer Abu Ghazaleh, was praised as an "edgy triumph" by the Guardian. For Louca, 36, Elephantine serves as both the pinnacle of his wide-ranging experience and a bold next step in his development as a composer, arranger, and bandleader. "There was a blessed thing about the process of making this record," Louca says of the sessions, held in Stockholm. "The dynamic between us musically but also as people . . . What these musicians delivered was really more than I could ask for, Everyone played their hearts out on this record." The music-from its pensive lulls through its stretches of hard-grooving hypnosis and moments of avant-jazz catharsis-testifies to that rapport. Best absorbed as a continuous performance, Elephantine's six individually named tracks nonetheless present striking self-contained landscapes. "The Leper" entrances through a deft use of repetition that Louca gleaned from cosmic jazz, African and Yemeni music, and other transcendental modal traditions. "Laika" manages to evoke the minimalists, though on the combustible terms of '60s and '70s free jazz; "One More for the Gutter", on which Louca ingeniously pits one half of his ensemble against the other, albeit in a synergistic way, mines similarly fiery terrain. "The Palm of a Ghost" distills the band to a Cairo-rooted core, featuring stirring spontaneous melodies from oud player Natik Awayez, violinist Ayman Asfour, and vocalist Nadah El Shazly. The album's title track follows, and it too blurs the border between composition and improvisation with gorgeously atmospheric results. "Al Khawaga", with its colossal ensemble riffs, beautifully dirty swing, and impassioned blowing, is an ideal finale. RIYL: Sun City Girls, '70s Miles Davis, Don Cherry, Alice Coltrane, Tortoise. Cover art by Egyptian visual artist Maha Maamoun.

MORBY, KEVIN Harlem River Dub (Peaking Lights Remix) 12"
"'I wanted to do something to honor the title track off of my debut album, Harlem River, turning five years old this year. It's been very good to me over the past half decade as well as a staple in my live show. I've asked Aaron [Coyes] from Peaking Lights to breath some new life into it and give it a remix and I'm very happy with the results. This December I will be performing an hour long version of the song featuring many special guests. I wrote the song to be about new explorations, and it continues to give me -- year after year -- just that.' --Kevin Morby"
