BERG, HANS Sounds Of The Forest Forgotten LP
As humans living on the planet today, one can become so removed from one's original, natural habitat - the forest - that one can forget one's wild roots, one's primal, animal origins. Music is one of the things that can bring one back to that place, that can put one in contact with a world of instinct, immediacy, and presence: a world where language and the problem-solving mind are not needed, where the music keeps the mind and body in the present moment, and the point of dancing becomes the dance of inner wildness and animality itself. Hans Berg's Sounds of the Forest Forgotten affirms that music can bring us to a state of mind and body that can help us feel what's been forgotten from the forest. The overlaying project of the album is to conjure musical and conceptual resonances between mysticism and nature, summoning the incredible depth and force of nature that is usually missed, especially living in contemporary urban cities. Sounds of the Forest Forgotten channels the creativity, playfulness, and freedom of a life both before and beyond through the sounds of analog and digital synthesizers, a modular system, drum machines, and computers. Recorded between Hans's studios in Berlin and in the Swedish countryside, the album similarly shuttles between contemplative and ecstatic, between delicate and powerful, mixing sublime psychedelic techno compositions like "Emerald Sea" with acidic dance-floor bangers like "Storm" and "Milk Thistle," all nestled between contemplative and textural ambient compositions like "Butterfly" and "Glow Worm." Berg is known for his enthralling productions and energetic live sets that capture dance floors with his particular brand of hypnotic techno, replete with angular lines, affecting melodies, pulsating basslines, and big drums. He also produces atmospheric scores and ambient soundscapes to accompany the video art and installations of long-term collaborator and celebrated artist Nathalie Djurberg. Berg's live sets have found a home in nightclubs around the world, with recent gigs in Berlin, Stockholm, New York, Tokyo, and Melbourne, to name a few. His ongoing collaboration with fellow Swede Johanna Knutsson as Knutsson/Berg has led them to start the label UFO Station Recordings, on which they release their own material. Includes download code.

DJRUM Seven Lies 3LP
Originally released in 2013; Clear red vinyl edition. 2nd Drop Records release Seven Lies, the debut album by Felix Manuel, aka Djrum (pronounced "Drum"). Its sounds are inspired by the rawness of urban London, influences of Portishead, DJ Shadow, and The Cinematic Orchestra, jungle, minimal techno, classic house, broken beat -- all seamlessly segued with a nod to jazz vinyl and film music. Fans will recognize Djrum's iconic tropes on Seven Lies: widescreen atmospheres, dub chords, dusty and melancholic strings, obscure film samples. But this time its spread over a bigger, more luxurious canvas that dips like an undulating terrain of sound; techno troughs, bumpy hip-hop breaks, euphoric drum and bass, all filtered through the Djrum node. Felix would admit himself he is a not a prolific producer. Preferring to craft and hone, often allowing music to mutate and diverge down different paths, his tracks often top the eight- to nine-minute mark in length. However, each track is never at risk of becoming staid or boring, quite the opposite as ideas mutate and evolve, subtle differences and nuances are evoked and explored. Inspired by the sounds of Ninja Tune's Solid Steel radio show, Oxford born/London based Felix became involved with the free party scene and helped set up the seminal Yardcore nights in 2005. A night of wild extremes, it swept from acts as diverse as Hellfish, Andy Stott, Breakage, and Various Production in one night. An aesthetic he still faithfully adheres to in his all-vinyl DJ sets, a seamless blend of techno, garage, dancehall, hip hop, old-school hardcore, and jungle. Just as the dominant dubstep scene was in a painful, if fertile, transitionary period in 2010, Felix made his production debut as Djrum with 12" singles on the On The Edge and Smokin Sessions labels. This would ultimately provide him with the perfect platform for his own hybrid sound. A sound that instead of reflecting the brash energy of his DJ style, turned inwards, almost ingesting and metabolizing those sounds to create an introspective and more sensitive and tactile crossbreed. The 2nd Drop label were lucky enough to pick up on his latent talent. After a few remixes came the Mountains EP in 2011. The third part of the Mountains EP came in 2012, completing an epic body of music and setting up the realization of Seven Lies, Djrum's highly-accomplished debut long player. Features Shadowbox. Artwork by Jaya Mansberger.

DOLE & KOM Twenty Five CD
Twenty-five years: That's the amount of time that has passed since the first Dole & Kom EP went on rotation in the club world. Ever since the duo managed to keep a straight line -- yet to take unexpected turns again and again. Elements of techno and house have always been a part of this trip, like sheet lightning on the horizon -- but at the end of the day none of these genres is an appropriate description for the sound of Dole & Kom. Melodic enigma and subtle drama, heavyweight bass frequencies, ecstatic intricacy, and whipping hi-hat showers: These are some of the most prominent features of Dole & Kom's debut album. It consists of exclusively new tracks, and all of them reflect a deep and unbroken passion for the dancefloor, multiplied with a remarkable amount of experience. Three tracks have been created in collaboration with befriended vocal artists, apart from these you'll hear Dole & Kom as pure as it gets. In other words: Dance music that stimulates the listener on both an emotional and an intellectual level, dance music that provides both depth and uplift. Features Anduze and Kijana.

7TH PLAIN, THE Chronicles I-III 6LP BOX
In the afterglow of rave's white heat, the mid-'90s were a period of going as far out in all directions as possible; Luke Slater's The 7th Plain tracks were about exploration of the deep space of the imagination. Cosmic, analog, orchestrated, they still represent some of the most emotionally intense music ever to come out of the techno realm. Whether built on percussive frameworks or sweeping nebulas of dissipated sound, Slater's synthesizers still sing space-travelers' tales compellingly and beautifully. For this reason A-TON launched back in 2016 with The 7th Plain's Chronicles I (ATON 001CD/LP), establishing itself as a platform for archive, ambient and art-related releases. With the release of Chronicles II (ATON 006CD/LP, 2018) and Chronicles III (ATON 007CD/LP, 2018), the journey continued further into outer and inner space. Now, Chronicles I-III complies all three volumes in a special-edition box set. Chronicles II and I are divided between previously-released material, and four unreleased future classics. Chronicles III is music from the General Production Recordings label catalog and skews less toward percussive techno-funk and more toward free-form broken rhythms. Slater pioneered the UK's electronic landscape as Translucent, 4 Slots For Bill, Planetary Assault Systems, The 7th Plain, Clementine, and later as L.B. Dub Corp, by partly focusing on, partly bypassing the traditional, puristic values of techno. Together with Dave Sumner (Function) and Steve Bicknell he also operates as LSD. Chronicles is a three-part series of Slater's The 7th Plain project, including both previously released and unreleased material. Ultimately, when listening to all three parts of Chronicles, it's apparent that 7th Plain's music is cut from the same emotional cloth, one related strongly to the backroom, the chillout, the after-party, the solo headphone voyage. These weren't and never should be considered separate zones from the dance floor. Slater's 7th Plain was a response to those hallucinatory, spiritual, but still social spaces at the heart of underground communities; and the magic is still strong in it. Includes stickers, an essay by Joe Muggs and download code.

MZ.412 Svartmyrkr CD
Swedish behemoths MZ.412 return with Svartmyrkr, their first full-length in 12 years, once again asserting their dominion as the true kings of black industrial. Svartmyrkr is a massive tour de force that reinvents the classic sound of MZ.412 whilst retaining their trademark malevolent harshness. This album is dedicated to the true hell of the north -- Helheim -- and the giant goddess that rules it, Hel. From blackened ritual incantations, to bleak yet beautiful dark ambient arrangements, to harsh bombastic orchestrations, this album exceeds all expectations. MZ.412 blur the lines between music, magick and reality. The earth trembles... the mountains quake... all light is vanquished. The Swedish overlords darken the hearts and extinguish the souls of all who bear witness to Svartmyrkr. Beginning in 1988 (as Maschinenzimmer 412), MZ.412 are the inventors of black industrial, a genre mixing industrial noise, ritual ambient and black metal atmospheres. The band gained notoriety through their early releases on Cold Meat Industry. The mastermind behind the project is Henrik "Nordvargr" Björkk (Pouppée Fabrikk, Folkstorm, etc.), with Drakh (Beyond Sensory Experience) and Ulvtharm. KING MIDAS SOUND Solitude CD
Woe are King Midas Sound on Solitude, their crushingly desolate new album, auspiciously cued for a Valentine's Day release on Shapednoise's Cosmo Rhythmatic label. A meditation on loss, narrated by Roger Robisnon and produced by Kevin Martin (The Bug), Solitude sees KMS gut out their sound following the bittersweet shoegaze-dub blooms of their Edition1 collaboration with Fennesz (2015), resulting in a starkly noirish elegy to extinguished romance and love in the end times. Combining the grown-up, confessional vulnerability of Robinson's lyrics and dreader-than-dread delivery with the most stripped-back arrangements in Kevin Martin's entire catalog, the duo drill deep into emotional suffering with simultaneously suffocating yet somehow beautiful results. Over the course of 12 songs, they glacially limn a coming-to-terms with a loss that has been enforced or unexpected, and ultimately arrive at the starkest conclusions with cinematic effect. Solitude pushes King Midas Sound's pessimism to heart-rinsing degrees. Staging Robinson in a series of vantablack scenes veiled by smoky, minimal synth-lighting, the poet processes irrational and incessant feelings of rejection and loneliness. From the aching desolation of "You Disappear" to the unflinching realizations of "X", the ache imparted by Robinson's lyrics is only amplified by his quiet stoicism, while Kevin Martin finds power in a sense of deferred gratification and his embrace of negative space. The effect is nothing less than transfixing in the physicality of Robinson's descriptions and the detached nature of Martin's sferic electronics on "In The Night", while pangs of lush optimism lend an exquisite contrast to the desiccated riddim and gloom of "Alone", and the sylvan keys in their sensuous reverie, "Her Body". Solitude is a more than worthy follow-up to King Midas Sound's two albums for Hyperdub and their collaboration with Fennesz for Ninja Tune. It's bound to reset what you know about KMS, and become a go-to album for anyone going thru conscious uncoupling, domestic strife, or meditating on love in the age of info overload. Cover Artwork by Japanese contemporary photographer Daisuke Yokota. Mastered and cut by Pole at Scape mastering.

VILLALOBOS, RICARDO Mandela Move EP 2x12"
Berlin mainstay Ricardo Villalobos delivers the Mandela Move EP, a four-track EP of freshly stripped-back dancefloor movers saturated in brilliantly clever, unorthodox, and masterful sound design. Arriving as the second release on the Deset label, Ricardo Villalobos offers his incredible production talents to the blossoming Italian label, already heavily desired by both discerning DJs and punters alike. "Mandela Move" is a patient club cut in true Villalobos style: loopy, track-y, and trippy. Sonically shapeshifting in different directions, surprise percussion changes, perfectly sourced samples and a storytelling theme from start to end. "Frontec" is a shimmering 13-minute banger focused on only the most important elements and effects. Live percussion and fantastic tones sprinkle throughout with creatively tuned bells and whistles scattered across in a way only Ricardo can do. "Ectroscop" comes complete with some fuzzy bass frequencies and twisted vocal samples which rest under the surface. The loose rhythm structure and general freedom of the track confirms a true dance cut destined to be a favorite for the crowds listening closely. "Beetglass" is centered around a shuffling house foundation with huge synth swirls which come seemingly out of nowhere. Truly a primetime Villalobos banger if there's ever been one. Destined to lift the heads off the lucky folks on the floor when it's played.

VA Antologia De Musica Atipica Portuguesa Vol. 2: Regioes LP
In 1959, Michel Giacometti moved to Portugal and dedicated the following thirty years of his life recording traditional music all over the country. In the present decade, Portuguese music has been thriving and finally travelling abroad, long gone are the days those hidden gems were kept in secret in this distant corner of Europe. The discovery of current Portuguese music sparked an interest to Portuguese music, past and present. With both of those ideas in mind, Giacometti and the interest in Portuguese music, Antologia De Música Atípica Portuguesa creates an anthology of current sounds to the future. You can see it as history being made or a broad catalog of sounds that live and breathe the experimental and electronic that is happening in Portugal. The first step happened in 2017 with the releasing of the first volume on this anthology, O Trabalho ("The Labour") (CREP 035LP), and Discrepant now move onto Vol. 2, Regiões ("Regions"), with each track connecting with a different province from Portugal. Some names return to this volume, like Live Low with the beautifully haunting "Montemor" or Gonzo (Discrepant's own Gonçalo F. Cardoso), affirming his path in building detailed and processed field recordings music. More than a list of names, or songs, this second volume of Antologia De Música Atípica Portuguesa recreates a passage throughout different landscapes of Portugal, constantly leaving a trail of past, present, and future. The trail doesn't limit itself to the music, but to the traditions contained in the sounds and the stories spelled by the words. The beautifully slowed haunting-waltz "Por Riba", by Síria (Diana Combo), sets everything in motion and builds the way to Random Gods' upbeat march "Gazulo à Estronca da Santosa". "Malta Inquieta" (Ondness) embraces the most modern/contemporary side of this volume, proving that Regiões goes beyond the idea of catalog or even its own concept of "anthology" and provides music that's hard to categorize or even judge by modern standards. "Malta Inquieta" is an experimental jazz-electronic modern gem. It's followed by the guitar of Rui Carvalho, aka Filho da Mãe, with "Manta". "Montemor", opener on side B, sets the tone for a different trip, building up on more abstract and freeform music by Banha da Cobra ("Asylo"), Fantama ("Lamento das Beiras"), and the track by Gonzo. Regiões finishes with the right tone, fields recordings worked by Luís Antero, that tie the connection between Giacometti and the now.

BRITISH MURDER BOYS Fire In The Still Air CD
Regis and Surgeon's pivotal British Murder Boys, one of techno's greatest, shake up and recombine bleeding edge contemporary techno with provocative, enduring industrial inspirations from Throbbing Gristle and Coil. Cutting across the face of their catalog, from the incendiary opening sample of Jim Jones used in "Hate Is Such a Strong Word", through a crunching iteration of "As Above So Below", and back to their definitive early statement "Don't Give Way To Fear" via various hacked and processed BMB components, the decorated veterans invariably make mincemeat of the shouty dilettantes who have committed to this arena in recent years. Karl O'Connor mans the mic, swaggering around Anthony Child's shredded drum patterns and egging on the intensity, but also knowing when to wind his neck in and stop short of the sort of the showboating industrial clichés that drove dancers from industrial to techno in their droves during the early-mid '90s. In essence, the decorated veterans' sense of seething restraint, coupled with deadly conviction and technical expertise, makes Fire In The Still Air a definitive BMB set for the ages, one ready and willing to trigger a riot anytime. Just don't call it a comeback. Recorded at Berlin Atonal 08/24/18. CD comes in six-panel digipak.

THIGHPAULSANDRA Practical Electronics with Thighpaulsandra CD
As audacious as the sleeve it comes housed in, the UK's most eccentric audio malefactor returns with his eighth studio album, Practical Electronics with Thighpaulsandra. Unique in the Thighpaulsandra oeuvre, this one eschews the usual group-based recordings, consisting of electronics and vocals only. Hovering between haunted narratives and extended instrumental sequences, Practical Electronics is an eccentric excursion into playful pop and fearless electronic experimentation. Simultaneously intimidating and accessible, the energy of this untamed mind unleashes an artifact where high art unfolds as an oblique electronic cabaret. Having cut his teeth amongst such legendary outfits such as Coil and Spiritualized, Thighpaulsandra has constantly catapulted himself further and further into a musical landscape utterly of his own devising. Practical Electronics is the latest exemplary installment of a voice that is uncompromising as it is outlandish. Cover design by Liam Thonas; Photography by Siôn Oegon. Recorded and mixed by Thighpaulsandra at Aeriel Studios, Brechfa between 2017 and 2018. Mastered by Matt Colton at Alchemy Mastering, London.

COLLIN, JON Water and Rock Music Volume II LP
"The second volume of Water and Rock Music by British guitarist Jon Collin is another solid gambol in the outdoors. For much of this it sounds almost as though Mr. Collin is wearing a pair of hip waders and is up to his ass in a stream, casting for notes the way Hemingway casted for trout. His string bending recalls Loren Connors at points, but he has a manual approach to filigree Loren has never displayed. Notes bend and hover, but they also flutter, and the combination of sounds is not quite like anything that's preceded it. Some listeners have noted that the environmental sounds put them in mind of new age string pluckers, but Collin's compositions do not fall into the trap of needing to resolve melodic quandaries, or making gestures that chase after standard forms of beauty. Jon's music works as a series of comments on sound and questions about the physical space in which it's created, but like any good philosopher he knows when to leave a sense of mystery hanging in the air. There is plenty of sweetness to the playing here, whether he's strolling through a playground, standing in the middle of a busy street, or sitting the flight path of an airport. The music never seems dictated by the background sounds, so much as it encourages us to consider every part of the sonic construction to be heard as music (in the Cage-ian sense). The elements become a part of the greater whole in a seamless way. And the closer you listen the more that becomes clear. I am still most struck by (at least what sounds like) the 'stream' sequences. But that's just because I really like the visuals it conjures up. You may find different personal sweet spots. But find them you will. Water and Rock Music Volume II is a truly ear-opening spin." --Byron Coley, 2019 Edition of 250.

SEX TIDE Flash Fuck / Vernacular Splatter LP
"In 2017 we released the Possession Sessions LP (FTR 325LP) by this extraordinary Columbus, Ohio outfit. And while we wait for them to conjure up new fields of beautiful spew, we thought it might be a public service to make their first two EPs available as a single LP. Flash Fuck was released in 2013 by Tony Proccacino's visionary grunt-punk concern, A Wicked Company. Vernacular Splatter came out two years later on the great Columbus label, Superdreamer. Both of these records set our hair (what little of it there is) on fire, so when Mike Rep told us he'd recorded Possession Sessions we were on that bad bot like bees on a dead donkey. We finally got a chance to see 'em live at the last Cropped Out fest and they did not disappoint. Aurelie Celine stands at her drum kit, singing and playing with all the discordant orgone gush of Elisa Ambrogio back in the early Markers days, and Chris Corbin whips crazy avant-roots moves out of his guitar like they were low hanging fruit. Just bonkers. They had a third guy playing also, as they sometimes seem to do on records as well, and hey -- the extra flesh was a-okay. Sex Tide is a brilliant band by any standard. Don't be a moldy fig. Get with the program." --Byron Coley, 2019

D.O.C., THE No One Can Do It Better LP
2019 repress. "Get On Down is very proud to announce a reissue of one of the West Coast's most revered, yet underrated, hip-hop classics: The D.O.C.'s No One Can Do It Better. Produced entirely by Dr. Dre and out of print on vinyl in the U.S. for 25 years, this limited edition on black vinyl features original album artwork and thirteen tracks of rap heaven. When his debut album hit in mid-1989, The D.O.C. was in the vortex of the biggest hip-hop happening on the planet: the rise and rule of N.W.A. The group's breakout album Straight Outta Compton had hit one year prior and had created both controversy and worldwide critical acclaim. As rap history buffs and industry insiders know, the D.O.C. was a crucial behind-the-scenes member of the N.W.A. inner circle -- his most important role in the early days of the group, besides his close working relationship with Dr. Dre, was writing many of Eazy-E's rhymes, including his hit 1988 single 'We Want Eazy.' But The D.O.C. wasn't in N.W.A. and never wanted to be -- he was his own man, with his own vision. And after Compton proceeded to blow up (much like Eazy's 1988 LP, Eazy-Duz-It), the next crew album was No One Can Do It Better. Significantly, it was the first album where Dr. Dre showed his greatness as a solo producer for one MC. And the Dallas-born D.O.C. lived up to the challenge of Dre's funky, expertly-produced tracks by bringing his A-game on the mic. Boasting four singles -- 'The D.O.C. and the Doctor'; 'Mind Blowin''; the smash 'It's Funky Enough'; and 'The Formula' -- the album is flawless from beginning to end. Of particular note beyond the singles is 'The Grand Finale,' which was the last time that Ice Cube, M.C. Ren and Eazy-E would rhyme on a track together. Skillfully rhyming over both fast and slow tracks, The D.O.C. showed on this amazing record that he was one of hip-hop's most talented MCs, especially on the West Coast scene. He nearly died in a horrific car crash as the album was catching fire in the late summer of 1989, but he survived and continues to make new music and act as a sounding board for Dr. Dre to this day."

The third album track "Giant" was featured in Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4 (2002) and will be also found as a demo bonus song on the remastered 2019 album version. DZJENGHIS KHAN Dzjenghis Khan CD
Heavy Psych Sounds presents a reissue of Dzjenghis Khan's self-titled album, originally issued in 2007. Dzjenghis Khan is one of the most important psych-acid rock albums of the new millennium. The San Francisco-based band Dzjenghis Khan featured bassist Carson Binks (also in Wild Eyes and Saviours). This record reflects the musical scene of that era and it's still a raw acid rock pearl. Heavy Psych Sounds Records brings back to the current audience a piece of real acid rock; Dzjenghis Khan was one of the first bands to bring back the psych sound, in a time where there was not a real audience; one can say they were pioneers after the pioneers! Dzjenghis Khan is ten killer tracks; the sound is dirty, fuzzy, raw - the atmosphere is nearly lo-fi but the riffing will melt your face.

OBERST & BUCHNER Sfumato LP
Each track of Oberst & Buchner's debut album Sfumato is rich with anticipation and residue -- it feels like being taken on a very controlled journey through space and time by another life form. The two friends and musicians from Vienna and Berlin shift themes and melodies gradually into one another, producing billowing pieces of music with soft and foggy outlines. Just like you can get lost in the perfection of a single brush stroke in a renaissance painting from up close, if you step away you can't help but admire the planning, skill and instinct coming together in this album and every single track. The two producers almost seem to make use of the sounds that are not there, triggering our expectations and creating premonitions in our minds. The complex sound patterns are frequently juxtaposed by simple, almost naive melodies that make everything feel innately known but alien at the same time. On "Eye Liquor" the feature guest Tobias Koett brings just the right amount of fragility and humanity to offset the moodily awakening fantastic sonic beast beneath. With analog sounds the two celebrate the past and the future, creating murmuring, breathing streams of consciousness.

BOOKER, JAMES At Onkel Po's Carnegie Hall Hamburg 1976, Vol. 1 CD
The series continues! He was one of the greatest blues musicians, who died too early: James Booker. This concert from 1976 shows Booker on one of his best performances ever. James C. Booker's performance was exceptionally marvelous and just what blues should be all about. All the talk about his problems and the creation of legends which immediately started after his early death in 1983 (in the waiting room of a rehabilitation clinic), seemed so unimportant and irrelevant that day, just as irrelevant as the timetable of the Hamburg metro; because it does not matter if the last train has already departed (as on that particular evening) with an artist performing many of his own creations but also several blues-classics with so much devotion while being deeply rooted in the spiritual soil of this special city located between Mississippi and Lake Pontchartrain. Recorded October 27, 1976 at Onkel Pö's Carnegie Hall, Hamburg, Germany; Recorded by NDR Hamburg. Features extended liner notes in English and German by Michael Laages. The series continues! Drummer Louis Hayes, best known from his work with Cannonball Adderley presented together with his co-leader, tenor-saxophonist Junior Cook, known from his work with Horace Silver, a fantastic hard bop quintet, which featured young Woody Shaw on trumpet. The trumpeter turned 32 in the year this recording was made and was already on track for a career, which would make him one of the most important representatives of contemporary jazz (silenced way too early!). Shaw died in 1989, not even 45 years old. Already almost completely blind, he lost an arm in a subway-accident. Shortly afterwards his body just gave up. Recordings of Shaw together with his own ensemble are among the highlights of the Onkel Pö-series and more will follow soon. Shaw is exemplary for the musician at the crossroad between tradition on the one side and change on the other. He was able to perform freely but still keep a close attachment to the masters who had influenced and formed him. Until today he is one of the great forbears and casts a long shadow on young musicians, who again and again explore the narrow path which separates tradition and progress. Recorded March 11, 1976 at Onkel Pö's Carnegie Hall, Hamburg, Germany; Recorded by NDR Hamburg. Personnel: Woody Shaw - trumpet; Junior Cook - tenor sax; Ronnie Matthews - piano; Stafford James - bass; Louis Hayes - drums. Features extended liner notes in English and German by Michael Laages. DONNA REGINA Transient CD
As Donna Regina, Regina and Günther Janssen have been a fixture in the German indie pop and electronic scene ever since their first release in 1990. From 1999 on, they have released seven LPs and a slew of EPs on Karaoke Kalk. After a collection of cover versions of their songs by fellow artists and bands called Dis Cover - Donna Regina as Recorded By in 2015 (KK 085CD/LP), Transient sees the wife and husband duo both musically and lyrically pick up where they left off with 2014's Holding the Mirror for Sophia Loren (KK 078CD/LP). Even after 28 years and 13 full-length releases, Donna Regina still have much to say and on their first proper studio album since 2015 express it in more languages than ever. Between the English-language opener "Royal Blue" and the final German track "Lass Uns So Tun", Regina Janssen also explores French ("Quatre Septembres", written by Bertrand Burgalat's lyricist Pascal Mounet), Spanish ("Mí Globo De Nieve") and, newly so, Japanese (the Ayako Akashiba-penned "Melancholy Dragon") as languages to convey complex truths with only few and simple words. Simple would be one word with which to describe the music on Transient, although maybe that would be a premature judgement. Even though the Janssens' music, on this album only supported by the Danish guitarist Rolf Hansen on "Quatre Septembres", seems more minimalistic or perhaps even quieter than before, it is still brimming with details and the occasional moment of ecstasy. Transient isn't one of those records that will start slowly, peak in the middle and then fade out, but between songs like the opener "Royal Blue" and the beat-driven "Blitze" or the ambiguous up-beat track "Komm Lass Uns Heiraten" and "Melancholy Dragon" with its elegiac synthesizer harmonies draws on the sharp contrasts in mood and style. As such, Transient may just be the perfect title for this album that lyrically is more at home in the entire world than ever before in Donna Regina's history and also makes it abundantly clear that nothing, neither happiness nor sadness, will be forever. After 28 years and 13 full-length releases, Donna Regina stay in motion because the world does, too.

ZUKIE, TAPPER Black Man CD
Kingston Sounds present a reissue of Tapper Zukie's Black Man, originally released in 1978 as a Jamaican-only release on Tapper's Stars imprint. Long deleted, it has become a classic in Mr. Zukie's vast canon of musical biscuits and is well overdue this worldwide release for the first time. Tapper Zukie (b 1956. David Sinclair, Kingston, Jamaica) was raised in the rough and tough West Kingston area of Jamaica, between the districts of Trench Town and Greenwich Farm. Living pretty much on the streets from an early age, the youths including the young Tapper had no choice but to fall into the hands of the political parties that controlled various ghetto areas of the town. Music seemed like the only way out of a life of crime and gang culture. A path that Tapper Zukie found by the mid-1970s was establishing himself as a named star on the DJ Roots circuit. Back home in Jamaica he was also getting a name for his production work for other local singers such as Prince Allah and the group Knowledge. To release these productions and his own material in Jamaica, Tapper started up his own label called Stars. It's this label that saw the initial release of this album Black Man. A great collection of Tapper tunes such as his biblical cut "My God Is Real", "Revolution", the title track, and some work overs of some of his fellow Jamaican artists like "Poor Man Problem", a work over of Johnny Clarke's "Blood Dunza" and also Mr Clarke's "Leggo Violence". "Yaga Yaga" is a re-working Horace Andy and Tapper's big hit "Natty Dread Ah She Want", and "Gather Them" is a reworking of Knowledge's tune of the same name with the help from bands like Jah Wisdom and Delroy Fielding. A great collection of tunes and reworkings that will hopefully find a wider audience with this reissue. CD version includes four bonus tracks, tracks from Tapper Zukie's back catalog that sit well and follow the theme and meanings of Black Man: "Liberation Struggle", "Get Ready", "Prophecy", and "Fire Bun".

WEVAL The Weight 2LP
Double LP version, includes download. Straight in the wake of their eponymous debut LP (KOMP 131CD/KOM 352LP, 2016), Weval return to Kompakt with their sophomore album, The Weight, breaking their pop-mellow, nostalgia-friendly style further out in the open as they arrive "at this place again were everything felt spontaneous, new and exciting, like we had in the beginning". Orbiting around that ever-luminous yet wistful melodic halo that surrounds their music, this second full-length effort sweeps an extra-wide and languidly woven palette of emotions and moods, making for a uniquely ambitious and generously colored mosaic of sound. If the recording sessions "often started grumpy and emotionless" by Harm and Merijn's own admission, the pair was "surprised by the joy it gave us, which can be compared to the emotions we felt back in the first days of making music together"; subsequently reconnecting with that fresh, naïve feeling of "absolute creative freedom" they were after. The album is also the fruit of a whole new working process for them -- more playful and unpredictable -- which saw them switch from "guitars lying around to piano, onto our own synths and the most cheap quirky toy synths you can imagine", and involved "recording all of our own samples, voice and almost every instrument out of the box. We've always wanted a narrative for the album, and finding the right order perhaps took the most effort." As a whole, The Weight breathes with that transformative richness, free of limits and rules. Amidst this collection of songs and instrumentals that live by Weval's singularly positive take on music -- one that can "lift you up, and make you feel hopeful without being necessarily straight out 'happy'" as they define it, the title-track and lead single stays true to the duo's dynamic approach, putting on a fine balance of floor and dream inducing adaptability that sound engineer David Wrench (Frank Ocean, The XX) subtly made palpable. There's heavy showers of funk drops pouring from endless bars of thunderstorm clouds and laid-back riffs beating a restrained poolside-party kind of pulse, but also sensual vocals rising from beneath the sheets and rueful polaroid-filtered ambiences to soundtrack all possible moments in life -- from the most euphoric to those when music seems the only viable healing potion. Weightless and airy, yet texturally dense and widely magnetic overall, The Weight is a synthesis of the duo's multi-angle take on electronics: blissed-out, heartening and infinitely free.

RADIGUE, ELIANE Songs of Milarepa 2CD
Restocked; 2003 release. Originally released on Lovely Music in 1998. Double CD of all five of Elaine Radigue's songs in tribute to the Tibetan saint and poet from the 11th century. Two of the tracks dates from Radigue's first release in 1983, two are previously unreleased and the final 62-minute track was previously issued as a sole CD in 1987. The material is performed by Radigue (synthesizer and recording), Robert Ashley (English voice), and Lama Kunga Rinpoche (Tibetan voice). Radigue was born in France and has studied under Pierre Shaeffer and Pierre Henry; her music has an extremely organic and mystical electronics vibe, and has been previously documented on Phill Niblock's XI label, as well as Metamkine and Lovely. Milarepa is a great saint and poet of Tibet who lived in the 11th century. Through years dedicated to meditation and related practices in the solitude of the mountains, Milarepa achieved the highest attainable illumination and the mental power that enabled him to guide innumerable disciples. His ability to present complex teachings in a simple, lucid style is astonishing. He had a fine voice and loved to sing. When his patrons and disciples made a request or asked him a question, he answered in spontaneously composed free-flowing poems or lyric songs. It is said that he composed 100,000 songs to communicate his ideas in his teachings and conversations.

CV313 Glass City Sessions 2x12"
Repressed. Following on from Dimensional Space on Echospace (CV313 001CD, 313 004CD), dub techno legend CV313, aka Stephen Hitchell, offers up his second album, Glass City Sessions on Minimood, featuring five profoundly immersive tracks that come as a double vinyl release only. CV313's signature dub techno sound has been a blueprint for the genre and is created on vintage hardware; all sounds, static, tones, and paranormal occurrences are left in to render it as atmospheric as it is. The five expansive recordings that make up the album are actually based on live recordings from a DEMF after-show night back in 2000 in Detroit. "The music is a bit creepy and so was the experience of this live show," says Stephen Hitchell. "It was an old dingy warehouse about ten miles out of downtown Detroit, right next to the now abandoned Eloise asylum, but there are many stories of it still being haunted." Indeed, that theme of haunted locations around Detroit echoes through the five tracks and makes them a truly cinematic experience. Opening things up on the first record is the brilliantly dark "Belle Isle Symphonics", twelve frosty minutes of hunched-over drums and rattling metal sounds that place you in the center of a large abandoned building. "Masonic Mystic" is much sparser and more eerie, with watery chords and warm static suspending you in an unsettling calm atmosphere, but one that always feel like something strange is around the corner. On the second record the superb "Stars Above Elmwood" lifts the shadowy mood somewhat with more airy dub techno drums and pensive chords rippling out in all directions. It's warm, expansive, and utterly absorbing for more than 13 minutes. "Two Way Inn" continues the trip in fine style with gentle chords and barely there drums, comforting white noise and distant pads all sinking you into a state of meditation before the masterful "Eloise's Theme" arrives, an ambient-ish masterpiece with horizontal chords gently moving up-and-down the scales to trap you in a soothing state, but always with an undercurrent of foreboding. This new album by CV313 is deep, storytelling dub techno of the highest order. Comes on splatter vinyl.

LAMB, CATHERINE Atmospheres Transparent/Opaque CD
"This recording is an excellent introduction to the distinctive sound world of Catherine Lamb (b. 1982), who studied with James Tenney and Michael Pisaro, in that it documents a recent large-scale piece that epitomizes her compositional aesthetic, Prisma Interius IX (2018), and was recorded under the composer's supervision. 'I have been attempting to describe, in more elemental terms, the perceptual roles between musicians who are activating interactions in harmonic space. Overlays Transparent/Opaque (2013) was an initial attempt towards showing forms aside phenomenological clarities in which to enter from relational and therefore parallaxical points, in this case through shifting overlays. As though to place individual crystals, one by one, amongst the musicians, and to have them find their place of vibrancy or shadow due to the angle in which they are seeing the form. Rather than terms like loud/soft or foreground/background, opaque might suggest a tone that is filled, dense, and vibrant, whereas transparent might indicate a tone that is losing its fundamentality, becoming fused into the intensity of opacity; or that one might see through its sound, becoming atmospheric. The seven overlays are in constant flux, but the forms are synoptic, placed on their own and in their own space, as objects. Prisma Interius IX (2018), in contrast, would be one large crystal placed amongst the musicians, rotating with filtered light. So that each unfolding of the tonalities illuminates the form that is always present, allowing for a feeling of constant expansion. Prisma Interius IX is the culmination of a series of pieces written between late 2016 to summer 2018, examining particular (perhaps archaic) musical roles, and how they situate within the phenomenological/perceptual space my work has been growing into for the past 14 years. Elemental questions have been important in the series, like how is one tone a pivot between activating a total harmonic space as well as expanding a contour in time. There were many threads in the series, such as how to create structural changes through various conceptual shifts of a prism, the role of the voice, but the most obvious was the development of the secondary rainbow synthesizer, in collaboration with Bryan Eubanks since 2014, named after the faint shadow to the more brilliant primary visual. The instrument filters the adjacent environment to the listening space by literally fusing harmonically with chaotic atmospheric elements being picked up by the microphones outside. The role becomes a kind of highlighting continuo or tanpura to the more clearly articulating musical activity played by the ensemble, while also attempting a bridge for the listener towards an infinite, expanding space (in ideal terms).' --Catherine Lamb"

EFFICIENT REFINERIES Terahurtz CD
What on god's grey earth are Efficient Refineries? Far from being some post truth, fake nude, Chinese hoax, alt Reich Republican boy band, they are indeed the dark union of previous No. label acolyte Siegmar Fricke (Pharmakustik) and his Spanish wet nurse co-conspiritor Miguel Angel Ruiz. Siegmar is fondly remembered for his efforts on various No. releases including his most recent Pulsed Lavage (NO 306CD, 2017) alongside his solo material and collaborative work with the infamous German artist Conrad Schnitzler. Miguel Angel Ruiz has distinguished himself as one of the pioneers of Hispanic electronic music with his output since the early '80s and together these dark minds have been defiling sound systems since 1995. They appear here for the first time in an unholy trinity with No. together, the two parents unite as laboratory partners utilizing forbidden science and as yet unapproved future medicinal magicks to give birth to new life, in the classic Frankensteinian sense of the word. The behavioral and cognitive characteristics of each parent have been clearly imprinted onto the problem child to whom they gave birth and her early childhood development coach has described him as the sonic equivalent of the discovery of a new species from a far away, undiscovered territory, thought to be a hoax constructed by the devil from parts of lesser beasts. ARAUJO, VITOR Levaguia Tere 2LP
"... Vitor Araujo is one of those [artists] capable of articulating the Brazilian and world-wide classical music avant-garde with the undisputable artistic conquests of experimental-pop music of his time . . . His diverse musical formation, the forms of urban, popular, and folk music, related to his hometown (one of the greatest focal points that congregates the indigenous, European and Afro-descent people in Brazil) and the rest of the country, pervaded the aesthetic formation of the artist. This is verified even in his first works, in his debut album Toc (2008) and A/B (2012). Now, in his third album, the traditional candomblé rhythms reveal the perfect harmony between his influences both classical and electronic. The sources bequeathed by Heitor Villa-Lobos and the instrumental slope of his spiritual disciple Tom Jobim; the timbre and acoustic experiments of Gyorgy Ligeti; the cyclic narrative possibilities opened by Steve Reich; the remodeling of sound manipulation tools by Karlheinz Stockhausen; are related not only to the vanguard of electronic music but even to the rhythmic and vocal expressions of Brazilian music . . . It is not possible in this work, called Levaguiã Terê, to trace a final frontier between the classical and popular experiences, among the track list or even internally in the tracks. In terms of genre, the album could even be classified as eletro-acoustic, since this compositional school operates easily with organic and synthetic instrumentation. However, the great orchestral writing, the heavy percussion element, the instrumentation and counterpoint elements, the harmonies and vocal arrangements, and the thematic and phraseology marks of the composer wouldn't be designated to justice by this genre denomination. For the same reasons, the elements of electronic music, that subvert and act over the acoustically recorded material are mostly ordered by the pop music model, and not the classical ones, this last one not antagonizing the first. Thus, Levaguiã Terê is inserted in a disruptive way in the phonographic industry's current streams . . .It is possible to risk saying that this language and sound aesthetic hybridism born in Levaguiã Terê seems to yearn the utopia designed by Alex Ross in his 2004 article Björk's Saga. The utopia 'of a future world in which the ideologies, teleologies, style wars, and subdivisions that have so defined music in the past hundred years slip away.'" --Sílvio Moreira, M.A. in Philosophy, Professor of Aesthetics at the Faculdade Souza Lima & Berklee College of Music

ROBERTS, NEIL MCDERMOTT & TARTINE DE CLOUS, ALASDAIR Au Cube CD
Alasdair Roberts has worked with Drag City Records for some 20 years, releasing more than ten records featuring both interpretations of traditional songs and his own songwriting. He has played with Will Oldham, Jason Molina, and many others, and is now part of The Furrow Collective. In addition to being a fine fiddler in the Scottish traditional style, Neil McDermott is currently researching the musical and political engagement of the 1960s Scottish folk scene with the anti-nuclear movement. Tartine de Clous (Geoffroy Dudouit, Thomas Georget, and Guillaume Maupin) is a singing trio originally from the department of Charente in western France. Following in the footsteps of some of the great French groups of the late 20th century folk revival (such as Mélusine and La Bamboche), they sing largely unaccompanied three-part harmony arrangements of the traditional songs of France... and Scotland! In early 2016, Alasdair Roberts spoke of his admiration for Tartine de Clous' first LP, Sans Folklore (2015), in an article in English folk magazine, fRoots. After a first musical encounter in Glasgow in January 2017, alongside local fiddler Neil McDermott, the five of them reunited in December 2017. They explored a common set of songs, French, Scottish, and Roberts originals, and recorded them live, with an audience, at the Cube Microplex, an amazing arts venue and progressive social wellbeing enterprise in central Bristol. Recorded live by Neil McDermott at Cube Cinema, Bristol on December 8th and 9th 2017; "Rosie Anderson" recorded at the Old Dentist, London. Artwork by Gwénola Carrère (Brussels). Mastered by Sam Smith, SJS Mastering, Glasgow.

2019 repress. Umeko Ando (1932-2004) was a folk singer from Japan. She is a representative of the Ainu culture on the Hokkaido Island in the north of Japan. "Iuta Upopo" was released on Upopo Sanke (2003). "Upopo" is the name of a particular singing style which involves repetition, while "Iuta" simply means song. Umeko Ando performs this minimalistic vocal in a brittle, emotional manner which is framed by a slow, percussive pulse and Oki Kano's Tonkori patterns. This single is part of Pingipung's ongoing Concentrical Series of 7 inches. M.Rux provides a remix on the B side.

GUN, THE The Gun LP
"This 1968 release wasn't just the debut album for the British band The Gun; it also marked the debut of a number of other notable artists and their creations. First of all, this was the first album recorded by the Gurvitz brothers, bassist/vocalist Paul and guitarist/vocalist Adrian; they went on to form Three Man Army (with Buddy Miles among other drummers) and then The Baker Gurvitz Army with Ginger Baker of Cream among many other projects. Gun also introduced the song 'Race with the Devil,' which scored the band its only hit and was covered by everybody from Judas Priest to Girlschool to Black Oak Arkansas. And, finally, take a gander at that incredible front cover artwork... yes, that is the maiden album illustration of one Roger Dean, whose otherworldly creations graced the covers of many a Yes album cover (Yes vocalist Jon Anderson was for a short time a Gun member, in fact). Armed with such a collection of talent, and a dazzling stylistic breadth that ranged from psychedelic to hard rock to mod to Procol Harum-esque prog, it's little wonder that Gun has seen multiple reissues, but it's been about 30 years since it's been available on vinyl. Our limited edition (of 1000) 'red devil' vinyl pressing presents the original artwork intact. A classic of '60s British rock!"

COODER, RY Paris, Texas LP
"Seldom has any artist captured that ineffable 'high, lonesome sound' quite as beautifully as Ry Cooder did on his landmark soundtrack to Wim Wenders' 1984 film Paris, Texas. Not quite blues, not quite bluegrass, not quite ambient, Cooder's haunting, evocative score mirrors the existential journey of Harry Dean Stanton's Travis Henderson as he wanders through the empty Texas prairie landscape in pursuit of his irretrievable past. With the able help of multi-instrumentalists David Lindley and Jim Dickinson, Cooder crafts a soundscape (much of it based on Blind Willie Johnson's 'Dark Was the Night, Cold Was the Ground') that is profoundly sad yet leavened with bits of humor and whimsy. Real Gone Music is proud to present this classic soundtrack in a limited white vinyl edition."

TOM TOM CLUB Tom Tom Club LP
"The Talking Heads spawned a number of worthy side projects and spinoffs -- David Byrne & Brian Eno's My Life in the Bush of Ghosts, Jerry Harrison's The Red and the Black -- but none were as funky, danceable, and flat-out fun as Chris Frantz and Tina Weymouth's Tom Tom Club. Conceived as something of a larkish break from the grandly realized intellectual and artistic pretensions of the Heads' Remain in Light record, the duo's self-titled 1981 debut was recorded in Barbados with Weymouth's sisters and Adrian Belew and Steven Stanley from the Remain in Light band, and not only spawned a couple of hit singles in 'Genius of Love' and 'Wordy Rappinghood' but also became, in its own way, enormously influential. This was the sound of downtown New York talking, listening, and rapping to the burgeoning hip hop movement, a hybrid heard in a whole host of acts in the '80s and '90s, from Madonna to Mariah Carey to the Beastie Boys and beyond. Weymouth and Frantz went on to record several more albums under the Tom Tom Club moniker, but this remains the classic; Real Gone Music is proud to offer Tom Tom Club in a limited white vinyl edition. Fun, natural fun!"

SCHMIDT, DANIEL In My Arms, Many Flowers CD
Third edition of 200; Glass-mastered CD; Includes a 12-page booklet of program notes and photography. Includes additional track "And the Darkest Hour Is Just Before Dawn". Recital present the first album of American Gamelan composer Daniel Schmidt (b. 1942). Schmidt, who emerged in the Bay Area music scene in the 1970s, wove the threads of traditional Eastern Gamelan music together with American minimalism (repetitive music). Schmidt was (and is still) a prime figure in the development of American Gamelan music -- studying and collaborating with Lou Harrison, Jody Diamond, and Paul Dresher. He currently is a teacher at Mills College, teaching instrument building. The recordings on Flowers date from 1978-1982, selected directly from Schmidt's personal cassette archive. It holds two studio tracks, along with two live performances. The first track, "Dawn" (commissioned by composer John Adams), employs an early digital sampler provided by Pauline Oliveros. It holds the sound of a string quartet. The nature of this piece is breathtaking, an ocean of strings pulsing beneath the gliding bells of the gamelan -- such a lovely interplay. Furthermore, the title track, "Flowers", features the addition of a rebab, a traditional bowed instrument, which reels through the piece, netted and taught. The final two works are strictly gamelan compositions. "Ghosts" is a dynamic piece; rife with dexterous euphoria, it well displays the skillset of the percussionists heard on the LP. The closing work, "Faint Impressions", is a somber elegy. Demonstrating the fragility and grace possible with the gamelan; sounding almost as an evening piano sonata. In My Arms, Many Flowers is a unique document from an under-represented movement of American new music. An account of the curious beauty and woven emotions hidden within resonating pieces of metal.

PHILLIPS, TOM Words And Music LP+CD
Recital label head Sean McCann on Tom Phillips's Words And Music (January 2019): "Words And Music is a rare and sought-after album by artist Tom Phillips (b. 1937). Fueled by painting, opera, and concrete poetry, this LP was originally published by the king, Hansjörg Mayer, in 1975 (this LP has never been repressed). Most are familiar with Tom Phillips' 'After Raphael' painting used on the cover of Brian Eno's Another Green World LP (1975), along with the television series he made with director Peter Greenaway, A TV Dante (1990). However, Tom's crowning achievement is his art-book A Humument: A Treated Victorian Novel (1970). A reworked version of the obscure book, A Human Document, by W.H. Mallock, each page laboriously painted and collaged over. Spools of text are re-discovered from the original book, stitching together a new story surrounding the protagonist, Toge. Six editions have been published from between 1970 and 2017, each with different texts and paintings imagined. Phillips' work has the air of forlorn fantasy to it -- a designed romance. The first side of Words And Music contains four chamber works grown from impressionistic and graphic scores. A lovely flavor of British experimental composition à la Cornelius Cardew (with whom Phillips collaborated in the Scratch Orchestra). Tom's music incorporates touchstones of visual art: in his Irma opera, a band of voice colors wash over slides of chamber melodies; in 'Ornamentik,' (commissioned by Stuart Dempster) acoustic and electronic instruments are played as extended shapes along a piece of paper. The piano piece 'Lesbia Waltz' augments sheet music, cut-up measure by measure, placed and replaced. The second side of the LP holds readings from his famed book, A Humument. Recited by Tom, whose chestnut voice perfectly carries the stanzas of bizarre, romantic poetry. Dancing between meanings with gentle blood and ink soaking on each word." 7"x9" 12-page color pamphlet with scores and program notes; Includes CD; Edition of 215.

FEATER Socialo Blanco LP
Sometimes -- despite the high-octane, fast-track, and hyper-hysteric music business -- you come across things that seem so pure, perfect, and poetic that it almost hurts. Socialo Blanco is one of these objects. It appears understated at a first listen, startling at the second and totally enamoring by the third run. To lay it all out on the table: it sounds like a Music From Memory reissue, looks like a Growing Bins Records discovery, and feels like a flea-market-hippie-uncle-record-collection find. Based on the language (coincidences and misbehavior included) and direction of the classic EMS Synthi AKS and recorded by hand and directly to tape (no MIDI, no sync, no computer), it is at once out-of-time and out-of-touch with current sound aesthetics, but that only makes it even more contemporary (vintage), like a great piece of furniture. Unsurprising, if you know that Feater is helmed by Daniel Meuzard. Hailing from Vienna and having made a name for himself as a trustworthy and skilled studio equipment dealer and working closely with producer and studio engineer Sam Irl, the man has a knack for turning yesterday into today. Already is his project's second album, Socialo Blanco is the result of all of this and some magical and effortless sessions. The voice of Vilja Larjosto from Finland and Ghana's Eric Owusu (Pat Thomas, Ebo Taylor) on percussion, spontaneously invited to the recording sessions by fellow Viennese Giuseppe Leonardi, are the icing on the cake. All of that and especially the non-conformist pop song "Time Million" symbolizes the heart and soul of an album that deserves to be billed as such. And that is no mean feat.

MUSLIMGAUZE Azzazin 2LP
Azzazin is a double standout Muslimgauze album, first LP originally issued in 1996, as a CD (Muslimgauze Subscription 003); the second disc originally as a 10" of remixes (Muslimgauze Subscription 007). This 2LP adds two unreleased tracks. Tightly focused on a singular palette of monotone drones and swarming electronic buzzes, which arguably sound like a parallel to early Editions Mego. They're probably the most minimalist Muslimgauze tracks you've heard, and even still he manages to express a fine range of abstracted emotions, from aggressive buzz to tender ambient pieces and spectral concrete prisms. Starting with an extremely minimal opening number -- it's no surprise Finnish experimental duo Pan Sonic were Muslimgauze fans, based on this track -- Azzazzin has a much more electronic feeling than most of Bryn Jones's other albums, eschewing the traditional elements used elsewhere for a rough, quietly aggressive, and disturbing feel. The fourth track, with its unpredictable keyboard snarls over a low, quiet pulse, and the sixth and seventh songs, with distorted, high-pitched noise tones mixed with a soft series of bass notes and a slight spoken-word interjection from time to time, are some of the strong points from this intriguing release. Surprisingly this album contains no trace of percussions whatsoever and instead presents a dry and claustrophobic minimal electronics that sounds more like a Warp band or a project by some S.E.T.I.-inspired laptop artist than a Middle Eastern-inspired band. Outer space sci-fi sounds meet with found sounds and human-made noises, isolationist experimental knob tweaking and mostly hi frequency material loops playing at random. Beats are used in an extremely limited way throughout Azzazzin, with rhythm, always a key component of Jones' work, more suggested at points by the nature of the keyboard lines than anything else. draws a picture of the artist that is different than the one we got to know. Closing with an equally minimal track, Azzazzin won't be everyone's cup of tea, but adventuresome listeners will find themselves rewarded. All tracks written, played by Muslimgauze. Edition of 700.

STAALPLAAT SOUND SYSTEM Installations LP
Sound-art converts all kinds of objects, artifacts and places into potential sound producers. Through setups, twisting and staging, the performance is virtually limitless and can also be enriched with selected constraints like the Oulipian literary works. Between performance and installation, sound-art is an in situ experience that takes place on industrial wastelands, natural environments or public spaces. Animated since 2000 by Carlo Crovato, Radboud Mens, Jens Alexander Ewald, and Geert-Jan Hobijn, Staalplaat SoundSystem has organized many ephemeral experiences that only last the time of an exhibition, an event, hence the need to document, to embed the sound of these singular creations. After Composed Nature/Yokomono-Pro in collaboration with Lola Landscape Architects (AM 004LP, 2012), this record is the second "sonic photography" of Staalplaat SoundSystem, which gives an idea of some of its works. As a genuine conductor, on Installations Staalplaat SoundSystem mixes the strident noise of machines, the harrowing sound of sirens, and footsteps and voices, which resonate in the hall. For "Plan C", several sonic worlds follow each other: a little music box, cobbled up from a perforated paper strip; deep and eerie drones; metallic sound streaks synchronized with the light triggered by the faraway echo of the surrounding traffic which reveals the bridge structure; a line of wooden crates whose vibrations develop, increase in power and rumble like a thunderstorm. "Sale Away" has, again, wooden crates anchored to the metallic structure of the building play the role of a resonance chamber. Mixing with this drum-like sound device comes the soft hiss of flutes produced by vacuum cleaners and the purring of fans and radios tuned to 50 Hz. The two excerpts selected for the installation in Nantes give an effect of metallic overvoltage coupled with a mechanical moan. The three other excerpts of "Sale Away" are rougher, if not violent. The impressions of mechanical torsions and distortions, of noises that bang together like in the hold of a ship are more pronounced. In both cases, the spectators play a role, controlling the sources, the sound, with their mobile phone. This underlines even more the peculiar side of the installation according to its setting up. This interaction is in line with the Staalplaat SoundSystem spirit, which asserts itself away from galleries and museums and remains "down-to-earth".

LECKEY, MARK Fiorucci Made Me Hardcore LP
2019 repress; originally released in 2012. The video installation Fiorucci Made Me Hardcore (1999) is one of the best-known and -loved works by Turner Prize-winning, London-based artist and Northern English emigre Mark Leckey. It's a hugely influential piece, and the soundtrack itself has been sampled endlessly, most notably by Jamie xx on "All Under One Roof Raving" (2014). A phantasmic and transcendent collage of meticulously sourced and rearranged footage and sound samples spanning three decades of British subculture -- from Northern Soul thru '80s casuals and rave -- it may be considered an uncanny premonition of the hauntological zeitgeist that has manifested itself in virulent sections of UK electronic dance and pop culture since the early '00s. This record severs the sonic aspect from the moving image, offering a new perspective upon what rave culture maven and esteemed author Simon Reynolds calls "a remarkable piece of sound art in its own right." Divorced from its visual indicators, Leckey's amorphous, acephalic cues are reframed as an ethereal, Burroughsian mesh of VHS idents, terrace chants, fragmented field recordings, and atrophied samples cut with his own half-heard mumbles. At once recalling and predating the eldritch esthetics of Burial, The Caretaker, or the Mordant Music clique, it's an elegiac lament for an almost forgotten spirit and an abstracted obituary to the rituals, passions, and utopian ideals of pre-internet, working-class nightlife fantasias. It's backed with another soundtrack to a Mark Leckey video installation, GreenScreenRefrigeratorAction (2010). In stark contrast, the original video features a black Samsung Bottom Freezer Refrigerator stood in front of a green screen infinity cyc, recounting its contents, thoughts, and actions as narrated by the artist in a radically transformed cadence. Meditating on cybernetics and the ambient ecology of household appliances that permeate our lives, it's an unsettling yet compelling piece of sound design with subtly affective dynamics that reflect the underlying dystopic rhetoric with visceral and evocative precision. The piece was later used in a collaboration with Florian Hecker for the Push And Pull exhibition at the Tate Modern in 2011 (the soundtrack of which was released by PAN in 2015 as Hecker Leckey Sound Voice Chimera (PAN 047LP)).

GEROLD, ARMIN LORENZ Scaffold Eyes CD
Armin Lorenz Gerold is a sound artist based in Berlin. His work mostly focuses on links between sound, voice, and intimacy. He works in different mediums -- sound installations, audio plays, and live performances. Since 2017, Gerold has collaborated with Irish filmmaker Doireann O'Malley, composing soundtracks for her Prototypes film series which won the Berlin Art Prize. "It is early September and dozens of days since we last saw each other. Our communication has been a hit and miss operation ever since. Last week you left me hanging at Krumme Lanke, texting back from Kantstrasse." Produced in November 2017 for KW Institute for Contemporary Art's Compound series, Armin Lorenz Gerold's Scaffold Eyes is a 45-minute audio play, first presented as a multi-channel installation and a live reading performance. It is narrated by Gerold alongside London-based art and architecture historian Miriam Stoney and Berlin-based artist and filmmaker Doireann O'Malley. "It is a Tuesday evening in late August. She wanders through various streets linked to a canal that divides the district in two halves. Her thoughts are diffuse and further interrupted by looking at her phone relentlessly." Scaffold Eyes traces the paths of four characters as they wander through the urban landscape of Berlin. You listen in to their meandering thoughts. The lines they walk are never straight, their narrated memories and observations oscillating between the diffuse and the precise. Berlin's cityscape echoes their psychological space, its dimensions distorted. The city's sounds blend into each other. Scaffold is everywhere. In juxtaposing the constant reshaping of this metropole with the transient lives of his characters, Gerold places you into a world seemingly in flux. "It is early September. I enter Kreuzberg 61's town hall through the main entrance passing by a porters' lodge a man is barely visible behind glass. Gently lit from the side by a small table lamp, half his shape disappears... " The compositions seem algorithmic, yet mood-driven and fluid. Gerold combines spoken word with a collage of field recordings, ambient compositions and song sketches. For example, the faux-jazz of "Love Theme of Scaffold Eyes" suggests a film noir theme while resonating with a characters' depiction of construction sites by night. As you follow a character into an uninhabited highway construction site, we listen to his voice shifting gradually into vocoder, glancing at the autobahn superstructures around us, cars streaming by.

Turns out I made an album, by mistake. old school BM guitar-&-drum machine, a Linn-Drum and a Fred Moten sample, Serge drone, FM synth kicks and a YMO interview and a robot, 'shut up and listen to him play', 808 acid funk, 280bpm Gescom memories, a taiko ramen break rounded and a just intonation poem -- abc, the whole alphabet: performance from within fugitive study. I like to enjoy myself." --Simon Pomery, London, 28 December 2018Blood Music is Simon Pomery: London-based, Irish-born producer, musician and maker of the "infinity-poem". The name Blood Music is one English translation of the Japanese word "Kodo": "mind-before-thought", "children of the drum", "music heard in the womb", or rather, "blood music". He has two 12-inches on Diagonal Records -- Blood Music EP" (2013), and Chicks/Badgering (DIAG 022EP, 2015) -- digis on dingn\dents and self-released works. GPS Poetics is influenced by Pomery's research into poetics and ethics: Fred Moten's writings on poetry and improvisation from In the Break: The Aesthetics of the Black Radical Tradition (2003), Joan Retallack on Gertrude Stein, John Cage and aleatoric composition in "The Poethical Wager", and Édouard Glissant's Poetics of Relation (1990). The notion of "the center" is exploded in favor of fugitive research into the relational. The result here is a live mix of cross-genre blood musics, given to that most freely proliferating, streamable, downloadable, capitalist communication of consumer taste: the DJ mixtape. Pomery's use of text and voice in Blood Music continues his investigation of text-sound compositions of the '60s and '70s. His "infinity poems", which are algorithmically produced for print as well as for his A/V show "SPEED READING WITH BLOOD MUSIC", provide the visual art and language for his relational poetics. Blood Music has played Berlin Atonal (Germany), Elevate (Austria) Les Urbaines (Switzerland), Ochiai Soup (Tokyo), Club Stomp (Osaka), La Cheetah (Scotland), UH Fest (Hungary), Les Atelier Claus (Belgium), Incubate (Holland), a water tank in Lewisham and at Cafe Oto in London, where Pomery curates PRAXIS (2016-), a series of events devoted to text-sound compositions.

RUHM, GERHARD Diotima Hat Ihre Lekture Gewechselt CD
From the cover: "The 1971 detective audio play Diotima Hat Ihre Lektüre Gewechselt goes back to the records of a murder trial that took place around the turn of the 20th century: two music students were killed upon their own request -- because of a love affair -- by their piano teacher, who afterwards lacked the courage to shoot himself too, as planned. The court records are read out by two girls in alternation. The text is accompanied by background noise that the listeners can understand in relation to the described events but which liberates itself from the narration and suggests its own dimension of events. (...) Piano sounds are a further, structuring, element. They frame and subdivide the whole into sections of equal size, in a purely mechanical way. (...) The role of the piano part, however, is not just one of structuring time, or also of disrupting (as the speech is sometimes interrupted by tones in the middle of a phrase or a word); in fact, it relates to the described court case in terms of content as well, evoking associations to the piano lessons the young man gave to the two girls. The etude-like character and the frustrating discipline of the audio track provides a troubling contrast to the simultaneously expressed emotions." Full-color, six-panel digipak; liner notes by Gerhard Rühm in English and German; edition of 300.
