SHIKEN HANZO The Centipede 12"
Four bullets to the head from a sh?gun assassin with roots in d'n'b but fast evolving his own custom strain of minimalist sound-murder. "The Centipede" wears its junglism lightly, but is heavy in all other respects: a kind of low-slung, paranoid gangster-techno, ultra-dread and dub-cratered. "Menpo" and "OathKeeper" are just as murky and prickly-palm tense, but stretched and flexed and primed for the dance -- bass-drones flaring up like mardy cobras, beats fashioned from some impossible alloy of bamboo and hanzo-steel --before all shackles are shaken and total blast-off is achieved with "Oni".

PILOTWINGS, THE Psytube 12"
Melbourne party troupe Animals Dancing return with the label's sixth disc, Psytube; a mind-melting trip from Lyon duo, The Pilotwings. The synth-heavy house pair, synonymous with the BFDM label channel their digi-synth euphoria into trance-not-trance and acid atmospheres across a four track EP. From the subtle breaks and pan flute/acid combo of "Trance En Aubrac", steady synth flutter of "Future Glouglou" to the full tilt restless psychedelia of "Yakado" and cinematic acid-stepping "Gig In The Ocean", The Pilotwings once again showcase their tongue-in-cheek nods to the past with production launching into the future.

GIDGE Autumn Bells 2LP
One of the most beautiful albums of the 2010s gets a reissue on double-vinyl -- in 2014 the Swedish duo Gidge released their debut: Autumn Bells."The very beginning of 'I Fell In Love' are the most passionate and emotional couple of notes I have heard.""An incredibly organic listen from start to finish, Autumn Bells is the season's distilled feeling put in song. Gidge successfully captures microscopic moments of decay and beauty within the framework of pop and ambient-inflected techno.""An utterly captivating piece of work. Each new listen only enriches the songs.""One of the finest, most enjoyable electronic albums I have heard in recent times. Every sound is so well thought out and sculpted, some seriously head-tingling music."

PETARDS, THE Pet Arts 2LP
"1970 was a busy and exciting year for The Petards consisting of Klaus and Horst Ebert, Roger Waldmann and Arno Dittrich. With Hitshock, they had released a successful album, they had performed in theatres of Bremen and the Ruhr area; they had performed in the legendary 'Olympia' in Paris and had played some 150 concerts. Want even more statistics? The band was on the radio in 1970 no less than 800 times, and of course the band was on the top of the relevant annual polls of the music press everywhere! From November to December 1970 the band was back in the studio to record their fourth album. Their label Liberty had generously given them a double album, four LP sides had to be filled. No problem for the creative Ebert brothers, Klaus and Horst, who once again were responsible for writing all the songs. This time the band wasn't accommodated in Munich's Trixi Studio where the previous albums had been recorded. Instead, they stayed with sound guru Dieter Dierks in the trendy Dierks Studio in Stommeln. Siggi Loch was not present at the sessions, the band and Klaus Ebert in particular acted as producers themselves. The result was the band's most experimental album, a colorful kaleidoscope with strong psychedelic tracks. The songs got out longer and more unusual, the band didn't care about the radio compatibility of the earlier albums. They had fun and tested what was possible. A great album, which surely belongs to the best what at that time came out of German studios. Pet Arts was released on March 31, 1971. Bear Family releases this sought-after double album - back in its original artwork - on 180 gram vinyl for the first time."

PINHAS, RICHARD L'Ethique CD
Bureau B present a reissue of Richard Pinhas's L'Ethique, originally released in 1982. Following the vaguely poppy shapes of 1980's album East West (BB 292CD/LP), his fifth album L'Ethique saw the ex-Heldon guitarist and synth wizard return to bigger and bolder band-like methods. After the release he disappeared from the limelight for nearly a decade and returned in the 1990s. Interviewed by the Electronics & Music Maker magazine in 1982, Pinhas spoke in buoyant terms about the future of his recording career. Having just unveiled his fifth solo album, L'Ethique, he was already scheming towards its follow-up. It would see him shift from analog-based methods to digital systems. He expected the album to arrive in 1984. Little did anybody know that the mooted record would not actually materialize. The year after that interview took place, Pinhas was plunged into a long period of depression. "I stopped everything and didn't think I would ever come back to music," he remembers. "I decided music was no longer for me. I'd said what I had to wanted to say, and it was done. It was out of my head and out of my life." Thus, he sold all his synthesizers and tried to survive on their profits along with royalties from his back catalog. L'Ethique now looked as though it was Pinhas's final artistic statement. It saw Pinhas return to bigger and bolder band-like methods. His collaborators included bassist Bernard Paganotti and Clément Bailly, both of whom performed in Magma. Moog player Patrick Gauthier made a reappearance too. The line-up brought a phat and forceful feel to the crunching jazz-rock fusion of "Belfast" and "Dedicated To K.C.", a vibrant space-rock stomper that lurks on some distant planet between the extraterrestrial habitats of King Crimson, Pink Floyd, and Hawkwind. Part 1 of "The Western Wall" has a particularly fast tempo. Interspersing these rockers sit some mellower moments. The title of the gorgeous synth rumination "Melodic Simple Transition" seems far too modest. Despite its dark and brooding synth chords, the second instalment of "The Western Wall" has a strangely calming effect on the senses. Pinhas disappeared from the limelight for nearly a decade under the weight of his depression, but he eventually returned in the 1990s. "The real miracle is that I reconnected with the musicmaking process," says Pinhas on overcoming his reclusive years. "It is easy to fall, but very difficult to come back."

BFM Limitless EP 12"
UK producer and Cella Records label operator Turner welcomes Rochdale-based artist duo BFM (Bloodklart Fiyah Mandem) to the label. Consisting of JFO and Sativa, their collaborative output cuts through the noise. "Magic Carpet" sets path on a ride into a distant and barren territory; the authentic old-school instrumentation and lavishly saturated low-frequency surges will keep you coming back for more. "Niyaz" lures you into spheres of droning reverberations phasing in-and-out amidst vigorous square-wave leads and meticulously crafted foley effects. "Shade Riddim" conjures another isomer of their signature ambience. "Limitless" wraps-up the madness, delivering a flawlessly executed bass-weight meditation.

FAITH, GEORGE To Be A Lover LP
"Anyone with a passing interest in music will have heard Bob Marley but anyone with a little more than a passing interest will be familiar with Lee Perry also known as 'Scratch' or 'The Upsetter'. Now better known as a 'performance artist' his antics and acrobatics on the international festival circuit have gained him a committed following eager to see what Lee 'Scratch' Perry, now in his eighties, will dare to get up to next. However, throughout the sixties and seventies Scratch was the production genius behind some of the greatest, most complex, and seriously experimental music to ever come out of Jamaica... or anywhere else for that matter. He has made an indelible, incredible contribution to the development of reggae music as a producer, arranger, writer and (occasionally) singer and has been the inspiration behind innumerable developments in the genre. In 1968 Scratch's production of 'Tighten Up' with The Untouchables gave the name to Trojan Records' hugely popular series of albums which were instrumental in crossing over the sound of real reggae to the mainstream audience. The following year the scintillating Upsetters instrumental 'Return Of Django' reached number five in the UK National Charts. His work with Bob Marley & The Wailers in the early seventies, rated by many cognoscenti as the trio's strongest recordings, emphasized the deeper roots elements in their music and, paradoxically, paved the way for Bob Marley's commercial crossover success later in the decade. His collaborations with King Tubby in 1973 culminated in Upsetters' 14 Dub Black Board Jungle, one of the very first and perhaps the best ever dub albums. Scratch's production of Susan Cadogan's interpretation of Millie Jackson's version of Katie Love's "It Hurts So Good" reached number four in the UK National Charts in 1975."

HAYWARD, ROBIN Words of Paradise PIC. DISC
Robin Hayward (b. 1969 in Brighton, England) is a tuba player and composer based in Berlin. Since the 1990s, he has been concerning himself with experimental and radical playing techniques on brass instruments, initially through the discovery of the "noise-valve", later through development of the first fully microtonal tuba in 2009. In 2012, he invented the Hayward Tuning Vine as an interface for exploring the harmonic space implicit within the instrument, which exists both as a software version and as a physical prototype. Hayward's microtonal tuba and, on some occasions, the tuning vine have appeared on numerous recordings with various ensembles, e.g. Tonaliens -- who released a double-LP on Edition Telemark in 2017 (ET 785-02LP) --, Chora(s)san Time-Court Mirage, and Microtub. Words of Paradise is a 2016 recording performed by Zinc & Copper, Hayward's long-running brass chamber ensemble, featuring himself on tuba and tuning vine, Hilary Jeffery on trombone, and Elena Kakaliagou on horn. The piece was inspired by the ideas of 16th-century Dutch linguist Johannes Goropius Becanus, who thought he had shown the Flemish dialect Brabantic to be the original language spoken in Paradise. Observing Brabantic to have a higher proportion of single-syllable words compared to other languages, he reasoned that as the first language must have been the simplest, all languages must be derived from it. The composition draws on the sound of 13 single-syllable words that Becanus used to support his theories. Using half-valve and muting techniques, the inflections of speech and vowel sounds are imitated on the brass instruments, to which the Hayward Tuning Vine is played as a harmonic reference. Comes on LP picture disc replicating the multi-colored circular scores of the horn and trombone parts of Words of Paradise; housed in a black die-cut sleeve with liner notes on the rear side; Edition of 300.

DAFELDECKER, WERNER Small Worlds LP
Small Worlds (2004) is a 42-minute composition for improvising sextet by Austrian double bassist, composer and improviser Werner Dafeldecker. The score is written for any instrument and divides the players into two virtual trios whose constellations change every three minutes. No restrictions are made regarding material or playing techniques, the only specification is that in each three-minute trio, one player has the role of the "dynamic leader" which means that no other player within the trio should play louder than the one on that leading position. Apart from that, the only other restriction concerns how pauses are to be made when two players interchange their positions within the trios. According to Dafeldecker, the object of the piece is to provide a structure that doesn't curtail the qualities of the musicians, yet forces them to listen very closely to each other and make focused decisions about parameters that are often overlooked in completely free improvisation. Especially, the given structure avoids the emergence of certain clichés that are often present in free improvisation, while retaining a very high level of openness with regard to how the piece is performed. The first published recording of Small Worlds, by Australian ensemble Quiver, was released in 2017 on CDr by Tone List. This LP contains a recording made in 2004 at Taktlos Festival in Basel, Switzerland, that features the line-up that Dafeldecker originally had in mind when he wrote the piece: Burkhard Beins (percussion), Martin Brandlmayr (percussion), Werner Dafeldecker (double bass), Klaus Lang (organ), Michael Moser (cello), and John Tilbury (piano). Partly, this constellation later also played together in the long-running avant-garde group Polwechsel. Comes in sleeve with three inserts: two featuring an extensive conversation between Werner Dafeldecker and Matthias Haenisch discussing Small Worlds, Polwechsel and free improvisation in general (German and English), the third reproducing the score of the piece; Edition of 300.

ENGELEN, WILLIAM Today, The Organ Has Played Beautifully Again 2LP
William Engelen (born 1964 in Weert, The Netherlands) is a sound and visual artist living and working in Berlin. After having studied visual arts, his focus shifted over time from solely visual to multi-disciplinary works that oscillate between sound and visual arts, between exhibition and performance, and incorporate installation, sculptural, and compositional elements. He now considers himself a conceptual artist who works with sound. Many of his works are site-specific and have been presented and performed in museums, galleries, concert halls, private apartments, parks, urban spaces, amongst others. Unlike other sound artists, Engelen does not primarily try to make a space sound, but rather develops works that resonate and reflect the specific surroundings where they are presented. Today, The Organ Has Played Beautifully Again (2018) is Engelen's second LP release after Partitur Belval in 2016. The piece was written for his solo exhibition "Heute Hat Die Orgel Wieder Schön Gespielt" at Kunsthalle Osnabrück in Lower Saxony, Germany. The Kunsthalle building was once a Dominican monastery which, in 1713, became home to a pipe organ made by the famous Klausing workshop in Herford. In 1819, after the monastery had been secularized, the organ was moved to St. Matthäus church in Melle where it continues to be played to the present day. For the exhibition, Engelen decided to virtually bring back the organ to its original place. The piece was performed first for an audience at St. Mätthaus church on October 14th, 2018, then turned into an 8-channel sound installation for the Kunsthalle exhibition from November 2018 to January 2019. During the rehearsals and the concert, video recordings were made that were compiled into a 2-channel work. The fourth iteration of the piece is this double-LP album, recorded in the night of October 18th, 2018. Co-released by Kunsthalle Osnabrück and Edition Telemark. Full-color gatefold sleeve; printed inner sleeves.William Engelen: "The air supply for this historic instrument can either be pumped by a motor or by sheer force, literally by stepping or pressing on the large bellows. Together with Stephan Lutermann, the church's regular organist, I explored and pushed the sonic boundaries and possibilities of the Klausing organ -- from the barely audible to the astonishingly raucous. While Stephan played the console, I served as the so-called calcant, or bellows blower, and in this role could decide the length and force of the air supply. Only four of the twelve parts are played with the help of the motor."

BRANKO Nosso LP
The first thing that strikes one when hearing Nosso is its feeling of intimacy and warmth. The title, which means "Ours" in Portuguese, is apt since Branko sees the record as the result of letting a wild variety of people into his world. João notes that "I didn't know most of the collaborators before meeting up with them in a studio somewhere in the world, so most of these songs are coming from a very immediate and honest sense of collaboration where you spend an afternoon with someone learning about each other at the same time as you're making music. It's a shared experience, a moment where two or more people came up with ideas together, that they probably wouldn't have had if they were in their comfort zone." These meetings were turned into songs at home in Lisbon once the main ideas were created collaboratively elsewhere. "On this album, like in everything else I did so far, the focus on the instrumental side of things was experimenting with rhythmic patterns and genres from the Portuguese-speaking universe while applying them to songs created with other artists from completely different backgrounds and places." There's something in this process that has left the album sounding super fresh as this is a sound without borders that pulls one in. It's music everyone can be a part of, where even the most rugged up-tempo cut sounds welcoming. It's an overwhelmingly positive and joyous experience to immerse oneself in Nosso. Branko fuses local rhythms from kizomba to baile funk and Afro-house through European electronic genres with a clear accessible pop sensibility and the aim of creating a unified sound that puts all these individual musical expressions in perspective as part of a greater whole.

COLDHARBOURSTORES Vesta LP
LP version. From out of the wilderness comes Vesta, the third full length album from Coldharbourstores, conceived entirely by the established line up of Lucy Castro, David Read, Michael McCabe, and Liam Greany. The band were determined to shorten the gap between albums after their critically acclaimed second album Wilderness (RAPT 077CD/LP, 2017) had taken 14 years to release, following the band's debut More Than The Other, in 2002. What transpired is essentially a love album - universal, personal, eternal - keeping the flame alive no matter what. Vesta was recorded and produced, once again, by Bark Psychosis legend Graham Sutton (Jarvis Cocker, Silver Apples, These New Puritans, and British Sea Power), with long-time design collaborator Martin Andersen (AndersenM, Lush, The Breeders, 4AD/V23, JK Rowling's Pottermore) again translating the music into a stunning new sleeve design. Two singles have been taken from the album: "Disenchantment" and "Castle", which have accompanying remixes from Silver Apples, Fuxa, and L-Shape. Jonathan Pound (Throwing Muses, Micah P. Hinson), together with a performance by Tania and Kentaro of the Tarinainanika Theatre Unit of Japan, has directed the video for lead single "Disenchantment".

DEODATO, EUMIR Os Catedraticos 73 LP
LP version, 180 gram vinyl. Far Out Recordings presents a reissue of Eumir Deodato's Os Catedraticos 73, originally issued in 1973. One of Brazil's most prolific artists, Deodato has participated in the creation of over 450 albums, racked up 16 platinum records, won a Grammy (and received two more nominations), and sold over 250 million records in the USA alone. Over the course of his career, he has written for, arranged music by and played with artists including Frank Sinatra, Tom Jobim, Kool & The Gang, Earth, Wind & Fire, Marcos Valle, Aretha Franklin, and Bjork, among others. At the height of Deodato's productivity in the early 70s, Os Catedraticos 73 was recorded between Rio de Janeiro and New York, featuring a Brazilian rhythm section comprising Azymuth drummer Ivan 'Mamão' Conti, percussion master Orlandivo, and Sergio Barroso on bass, while the horn section features some of the Big Apple's top players from the CTI in-house brass. A firm favorite with rare-groove enthusiasts and fans of Latin jazz alike, Deodato melds the musical sensibility of post-bossa nova Brazilian jazz with North American soul and funk, and the explosive Latin influences of '70s New York. Os Catedraticos 73 certainly swings harder than some of Deodato's earlier releases and opening track "Arranha Ceu" (Skyscrapers) is a euphoric dance floor classic, which has been lighting up clubs for years. With the blessing of Deodato himself, this official Far Out reissue has been remastered. Replica original artwork.

ARRUDA, LUCAS Onda Nova 2LP
Double-LP version. Gatefold sleeve. Since the release of his two first albums on Favorite Recordings, Lucas Arruda has quickly established himself as one of the most talented young artist and composer from Brazil. His music is filled with a fusion of style, mixing influences and elements from his Latin musical background, with his genuine admiration for jazz, soul, pop, and funk music. In spring 2015, it was also not surprising to find Lucas Arruda back with a new LP called SOLAR (FVR 100CD/LP), receiving great support and feedback from international media and tastemakers. One of the highlights of the album was the song "Melt The Night", on which Lucas teamed up with legendary producer Leon Ware, reminding listeners of Ware's collaborations in the '80s with Marcos Valle when they perfectly merged together the sophisticated boogie and AOR touch from California, with the blazing sense of rhythm from Brazil. Favorite Recordings present Onda Nova, the third album by Lucas Arruda. Mostly written, composed and arranged by himself, Lucas however teams up on a few tracks with his old mate Fabricio di Monaco (Modo Solar), his brother and musical partner Thiago Arruda, who recently joined Ed Motta's live band, or Gaël Benyamin, aka Geyster, who brings his longtime "savoir-faire" and skills for writing and composing AOR and west coast music genre, and who share this deep passion with Lucas. Onda Nova is therefore pursuing the music direction set with SOLAR, mixing blue-eyed-soul, pop, soul, and Brazilian styles together, and influenced by the path of legendary Brazilian producer Lincoln Olivetti, who recorded some of the biggest stars of Brazilian music (Marcos Valle, Jorge Ben, Tim Maia). In Lucas words: "In this record I really wanted to honor Robson Jorge and Lincoln Olivetti. They are the main influence on this record. We recorded the basic tracks for the album in the same studio that Lincoln Olivetti did his last works. So, this was very important to capture the true essence of Brazilian Funk/AOR tradition. Hope you guys enjoy it!"

MAURICE, CHARLES AOR Global Sounds 1977-1986 Volume 4 CD
Favorite Recordings and Charles Maurice present the fourth edition of the AOR Global Sounds compilation series: 14 rare and hidden tracks, produced between 1977 and 1986 in various parts of the world. Started in 2015, the AOR Global Sounds series was born from the will of Charles Maurice (aka Pascal Rioux) to share his longtime love for the AOR and west coast movement and highlight its influence for many artists in the late '70s and early '80s. In this fourth volume, he again selected largely forgotten productions, deeply infused with disco and soul flavors. Half of the compilation's track list naturally comes from the US, homeland of this style of music, but the other half is made of productions from all over the globe, from France to Belgium, from Italy to Mexico. And for most of these beautiful songs, it comes from artists and bands largely unknown and often released as private press. As an example, "Come Back" is the result of a music talent competition won by a student band named Parenthèse, gaining a full recording session in a professional studio and the production of a limited promotional 7", which stayed completely obscure until now. "Mellow Out" comes from the only album by Pacific Dreams, which was fully self-produced and released by its leader Tommy Sweet. Fernando Toussaint, however, had quite a solid career and discography as a drummer, forming the Mexican jazz-funk band Sacbé with his brother, and had one solo album released in very limited quantities on Discos Alebrije, a label directed by Alain Derbez. As for "Never Was Love" by Russ Long, despite becoming quite famous when recorded and sang by Judy Roberts, it's still surprisingly undiscovered in its original version, taken from Russ' beautiful album from 1982, Long On Jazz In Kansas City. There are stories like this for each of the titles included in AOR Global Sounds Volume 4, but the best way to learn more about all these gems is to listen to them, fully remastered from originals, whether your preference is for vinyl or CD. MAURICE, CHARLES AOR Global Sounds 1977-1986 Volume 4 2LP
Double LP version. Gatefold sleeve. FAKI X JUXTA POSITION, LEN Superstition 12"
Joining forces for the first time are label founder Len Faki and Juxta Position. How effectively the prolific producers worked the machines with combined strength shows in every fiber of this four-tracker. The record's sides feature two alternate mixes of each track, "Superstition" tempts with is sultry vocal, driven by an irresistible acidic groove, fusing Juxta Position's preference for rough and analog sounds with the tight programming Len Faki has become renowned for. A lot more tender than its counterpart, "Gathering Clouds" slowly builds from jagged synths and droning basses, brewing up a vivid tempest of anticipation.

HENGE Nothing Head LP
London-based Henge have been frying brains for the last four years with their psychedelic doom, coming on like an acid-fried freight train straight to the cerebral core. Think Black Sabbath through an Amphetamine Reptile filter. Their first LP, Henge (GODUNK 011LP, 2016) gained rave reviews and Nothing Head builds on their debut's oppressive groove. The album opener, "Compressor" feels like staggering through a Californian desert with the heat beating down, bewildered and lost but knowing full well when reaching the destination that's when things will start to get really weird. "The Sea" continues the desert stagger until a white light beams down opening up a portal to the subconscious and bad deeds spring forth. "Beginners" makes a feeling of claustrophobia tingle with a forlorn wail following one's every move. The light finally begins to raise again with "Human Beings" although briefly until darkness descends with "Teddy Bear". Desperately trapped but once letting oneself go, movement flows freely. This is it. At just over eight minutes long, "Dracila" is the one that stretches time and builds on everything gone before. "Nike" ebbs and flows with a worldly understanding and rounding the LP off in an enlightened state. RIYL: Pigsx7, Black Sabbath, Jesus Lizard

BLOODSHOT BILL Come Get Your Love Right Now CD
"The one-man hurricane known as Bloodshot Bill started in his hometown of Montreal around 1998, with just a guitar and a stomp board. Since then, he's had over 35 releases throughout Europe and North America. He keeps a jam-packed calendar, juggling insane live shows all over the world with the requisite studio time, where the magic often happens with a star-studded stack of cohorts including The 5.6.7.8.'s, Jon Spencer, King Khan, Beat Poet Charles Plymell, Mark Sultan, Deke Dickerson and Shannon Shaw of Shannon & The Clams. Although this pistol plays well with others, there's a reason he's known as the greatest living one-man band. Artist Joe Coleman once called him 'a cross between Jimmie Rodgers and Popeye,' and director John Waters says he's 'like Roy Orbison with a head wound.' There have been some movie roles (usually playing himself), and accolades, too -- he has won FME's Coup De Coeur, and has been a nominee three times for an Ameripolitan Music Award. Bloodshot Bill's whacked-out take on rockabilly stroll and early R & B begins where Charlie Feathers' cryptic mumble meets Bobby Lee Trammell's uninhibited beat and then goes scampering down dark alleys beyond genres -- plus, it's catchy as hell! Come Get Your Love Right Now is his seventh album, and first for Goner, after several with the great purveyors of forgotten sounds, Norton Records. Dig the unhinged howl, that loose-stringed strum, his unique beat. Go bang your head on a bongo -- come and get it!"

BILGE PUMP We Love You CD
Leeds noise-rock and DIY linchpins return with their first album in ten years. If a band keeps it together for long enough music isn't just made, it grows. Bilge Pump are at that point with We Love You, their first album in ten years and perhaps their most accessible one to date, accessible only because people are admitting that they were ready for them all this time, listening to the likes of Marc Riley and taking notice. "Wheel Of Yew" -- it's PiL bass lines, Spacemen 3 guitar, and a blistering Butthole Surfers-esque solo are all held together with the tightest drumming this side of Bill Ward, as you'll witness guitarist Joe O'Sullivan take in a brisk autumnal walk with his dog Dolly from Otley to the top of Ilkley Moor. They have spent a while getting this album right, writing songs that describe a world where the council lets it rot and the kids make trouble, or sometimes music. A guy goes into a shed to build a guitar pedal and accidentally invents a time machine, ending up millennia back thinking about his future exes. Complex drum and bass arrangements emerge and the songs have to be reconsidered. The guitar needs something... better build a couple of amps to get that just right. "The Passion Of The Kid" is a live favorite developed out of Can style, four-and-a-half hour jam. Featuring a relentless two-note bass line, that somehow never gets boring, it provides the backbone for a lyrical diatribe on Brexit Britain. On "Me No Like", commentary is offered on the futility of the modern working man, "Ask anyone getting smashed in here, 'How agreeable do you find wearing a shirt and tie?'" "Manzana De La Discordia" follows a similar theme, a scenario of being reduced to spending an enforced holiday staring at a wall, reflecting upon life and the edibility of the fridge's contents.

RAMBHOJAN, MAX Max Rambhojan Presente... LP
Guadeloupe 1986. The football World Cup has all the islanders' eyes riveted to their TV sets. At every half-time breaks, local TV channel RFO broadcasts a music video on repeat: "Tou't Jou Pa Min'm". Max Rambhojan, the local singer responsible for this monster tune, has arrived. In the video, he effortlessly sings and kickstarts a joyous street party with his band, Show Man, his dancers, kids, friends, family, and what seems like the whole neighborhood. The song will gain cult status from then on, cementing the power of the "Zouk Chiré" sound, a high tempo version of Zouk, highly influenced by Guadeloupe's Carnival mass drum bands. Max self-released his first solo album on vinyl in 1985, enrolling some of the best musicians the scene has to offer: his band leader King Klero, Guy Jacquet of Les Vikings De La Guadeloupe fame on production duties, Ramon Pyrmée on synths, Claude Vamur on flute. In 1992 a new solo album follows. By then the artists have familiarized themselves with computers and the sound has gone full-on digital. In that album Max records an updated version of his "Tou't Jou Pa Min'm" anthem to great effect. Reducing Max Rambhojan to a Zouk artist would be a mistake. He's first and foremost a master of Gwo-Ka, a musical practice born during the transatlantic slave trade and performed by all ethnic and religious groups of Guadeloupe. It has never ceased to exist and has become a major part of the Island folk music culture. Max Rambhojan was schooled as a kid by Gwo-Ka pioneer Guy Conquette, and quickly joined the backing band of another legend, Ti-Sélès. That sound is the root of his particular style, especially vibrant on two tracks in his repertoire: "Cécilia" and "On Jou Matin", both featured on this release's B-side. A touch of spiritual jazz is also palpable, allowing a magical vibe to spread, giving birth to some of the deepest music from this era. In 2019, Max still performs Gwo-Ka every week-end in Guadeloupe and also hosts a show on local radio Media Tropical, 88.1FM. Secousse and Hot Mule present those four lost gems, carefully restored and remastered. Gatefold sleeve.

VA Spiritual Jazz 9: Blue Notes Parts One & Two 2CD
The Blue Note Record label needs little introduction. Musically, graphically and sonically iconic, the label created and defined the golden age of modern jazz on record. Founded in 1939 by German émigré Alfred Lion, the label's roster of artists is a litany of giants -- Thelonious Monk, Sonny Rollins, Horace Silver, Lee Morgan, Art Blakey, Lee Morgan, Herbie Hancock, and many more. With peerless musicians in the grooves, the legendary Rudy Van Gelder behind the boards, and graphic design genius Reid Miles creating emblematic artwork for every release, Blue Note -- "the Cadillac of the jazz lines" -- was outstanding in every way. Volume 9 of Jazzman's ground-breaking Spiritual Jazz series takes a close look at the deeper side of Blue Note -- from the experimental avant-garde explored by younger musicians such as Bobby Hutcherson, Joe Henderson, and Pete La Roca, to the exciting new developments in modal sounds put forward by stalwarts Hank Mobley, Jackie McLean, and Duke Pearson. The music we have selected shows how musicians working with the label responded to a period of dramatic social and sonic change, charting the route toward the esoteric and spiritualized sounds that would dominate the deepest jazz of the 1970s. As ever, Blue Note had lit the path, and this new Spiritual Jazz collection shows that the progressive and underground jazz sound of the 1960s was not only the preserve of obscure artists and private pressings. Blue spirits and heavy sounds on Blue Note -- the finest in jazz since 1939, brought to you by Jazzman.Available as a double-CD set, Parts One & Two (JMAN 103CD). MINOGUE, DANNII Neon Nights 2LP
Double LP version. Printed inner sleeve; Includes download card. Originally released in 2003, Dannii Minogue and London Records re-release Neon Nights to celebrate its 15th year anniversary of its release. A veritable pick and mix of the European dance scene at the time, Neon Nights spawned four Top 10 hit singles in the UK "Who Do You Love Now?" (No.3), "Put The Needle On It" (No.7), "I Begin To Wonder" (No.2), and "Don't Wanna Lose This Feeling" (No.5). The album reached No.8 on the UK Official Albums Chart and was certified gold. In Australia it was nominated for "Best Pop Release" at the 2003 ARIA Music Awards. Dannii says: "When I embarked on a solo recording career and released my first album in 1990, music was only released on 7" and 12" vinyl. Fast forward through my album releases and throw in a bunch of technology changes; cassingles, cassette albums, CDs, Mini CDs and we are finally back to vinyl! Neon Nights never had a vinyl release -- it was the '90s, and the industry was entering the digital age, and no-one was looking back at this experience of music listening. Thankfully Gen Y has embraced the nostalgia of the record player, so you finally get to put the needle on it with these tracks (please turn the volume up loud enough to annoy your neighbors!)" includes bonus tracks and remixes by Tiga, Jason Nevins, and Almighty.

JORGE, ROBSON Robson Jorge 1977 LP
Mad About Records present the first-time reissue of Robson Jorge 1977, an MPB/Brazilian soul album form 1977. One of the most important background figures of Brazilian soul in the '70s and '80s arranger/producer/composer/instrumentalist Robson Jorge, together with his partner Lincoln Olivetti defined the sound of the genre. While Olivetti took most of the fame, Robson Jorge was perhaps the mastermind of the duo, having doubtlessly influenced Tim Maia, but being obscured by his own problems with alcohol (which would finally conduce to his precocious demise). The rare Robson Jorge 1977 LP is a testimony of his genius, Born in Rio de Janeiro, he started out in music playing the acoustic guitar that belonged to his brother at age 11. Before turning 15, he was already playing at balls and even recording sessions. By the mid-70s played keyboards on Tim Maia's band (Seroma). Later on that decade, met with keyboardist/arranger Lincoln Olivetti, establishing a solid partnership and making songs recorded by countless artists. Robson and Lincoln were in charge of writing the arrangements for most of the big MPB stars in the '80s, which granted them fame, money, and hard critic reviews that accused them of turning MPB into lame pop. Robson Jorge died alone and forgotten in 1992.

SCHULZE'S WAHNFRIED, KLAUS Trancelation CD
"Not quite a normal Schulze-Album. This album is one of Klaus' sideline ideas, a "Wahnfried" release. And certainly not exactly a genuine and typical 'Schulze', if such a character does exist at all. In the '90s there was a new musical dance fashion, called Techno, Trance, Ambient or Chillout, and most of its champions called Klaus and Kraftwerk respectfully the 'Fathers of Trance and Techno'. Parts of former Schulze discs were being played in dance halls, and Techno producers used Klaus' music for their own creations. Fashionable groups such as The Irresistable Force, Future Sound of London or The Orb asked for their use of Klaus Schulze samples, plenty of others just used them. New musical heroes such as Sven Väth or William Orbit talked with Klaus about a maybe musical cooperation... Klaus seemed to like it, or at least some of it. The situation was curious. Klaus Schulze was once described as 'pioneering, single-minded and influential, a musician with taste for adventure.' No one else can claim to have been so important a force behind the music that becomes known as 'New Age' or the later subcultural 'Ambient-House'. His greatest triumph as a musician is the almost single-handed creation of synth-sequencer music and the related genres 'Cosmic Music' or 'Teutonic Synth', which later composers and musicians all over the world have latched on to 'Sure enough!' After doing his own crazy innovative music for a quarter of a century, suddenly some young pop musicians use freely what he did all those years, and sell it as their new invention. And people enjoy and dance to it. The obvious idea for Klaus Schulze was, to do a 'Trance' album himself. It promised some fun. Because this is a bit apart from his own musical direction, Klaus did it under his alter ego Wahnfried, as always not as the only driving force as in any Schulze production, but just one artist among others."

DEAF CENTER/SVARTE GREINER Owl Splinters / Twin 2LP
Deaf Center's second album Owl Splinters from 2011 gets a lavish re-packaging as a gatefold, double-LP. It includes the Svarte Greiner re-interpretation album, Twin, as well as new cover art with photos by cinematographer Joshua Zucker-Pluda. Owl Splinters was originally released six years after DC's debut, Pale Ravine. In contrast to their previous work, it was recorded in a studio setting (Nils Frahm's Durton studio, to be exact), and the lo-fidelity, haphazard techniques of their early recordings where all but gone. With the benefit of high-end engineering and analog equipment, Erik K Skodvin and Otto A Totland's murky compositions were transformed from sketches into glorious widescreen spectacles. Eight years later the album sounds as moving, beautiful, and obscure as it did back then. Twin is a 40-minute interpretation of Owl Splinters by Erik K Skodvin under his Svarte Greiner alias. The record takes the long-form, ghostly sections of its parent album and expands them into crushing drone epics. The two parts are cut into four sections, pieced together by used and unused material from the recording session. It first appeared in form of an accompaniment CD that came with the initial 100 LPs of Owl Splinters. This is the first time Twin appears on vinyl. Double LP version; Gatefold sleeve with foil embossing; Includes download code.

Modeselektor shift gears and follow-up their previous single "Wealth" with something quite different but just as representative of their musical identity. I Am Your God/Bronko features two sides of raw, deep, and abysmal. Taken from their upcoming album Who Else (MONKEY 096CD/LP/DLXLP), "I Am Your God" fiercely cracks the whip and conjures up a tunnel rave, with a screaming Otto von Schirach starring as an unholy god. "Bronko" carries on the industrial vibe and comes up with an ethereal breakdown. With their hypnotizing quality and meticulous sound design, both tracks exemplify how studio-savvy the duo has become in recent years.

GURTU, TRILOK Spellbound CD
"With Spellbound Gurtu once again underlines the fact that jazz still forms the basis for his musical oeuvre. With his band he takes a surprising leap into the history of swing music in the USA and also plays pieces by style-forming trumpeters who have long been a part of the jazz canon: Dizzy Gillespie's Afro-Cuban classic 'Manteca', or a tribute to the extraordinary fusion sound of Miles Davis from the 1970s, 'Jack Johnson/Black Saint', as well as his 'All Blues' from the masterpiece Kind Of Blue and, of course, Don Cherry's 'Universal Mother' which, with its genre-crossing flow in the version by Gurtu, is almost like a further motto for Spellbound. With the music on his new album the percussionist succeeds in something that nowadays is unusual and indeed rare: building a bridge between the continents and cultures. GILLESPIE & HANS KOLLER NEW JAZZ STARS, DIZZY NDR 60 Years Jazz Edition No01 CD
"Anyone in the NDR studio in Hamburg on the 9th of March 1953 who could read minds would probably have witnessed an international dialogue, which has ever since repeatedly influenced the Jazz world. '60 years Jazz in the NDR' - and what an event stands at the very beginning! The power of imagination is really not sufficient to conceive of the interaction of Gillespie's quintet with the other band in this studio session - or how on this 9th of March what was probably the most important modern quintet in the German-speaking world performed alongside Dizzy. Hans Koller had formed the band around himself. Koller was born in 1921 in Vienna. After time spent as an American prisoner of war, in 1946 he returned to his home city to found a Jazz club, and the saxophone sound he made his own influenced at least a generation. The trombonist Albert Mangelsdorff was not even 25 years old in March 1953, and it is not so long since he swapped the guitar for the trombone as a professional musician. Jutta Hipp is the pianist. Born in Leipzig in 1935, she was regarded as the greatest piano talent of her time; her career took off vertically, but ended abruptly and tragically shortly after she moved to the USA. She never played piano again and she never returned to Germany. She died in 2003 in New York, almost completely forgotten."

THOEGERSEN, PETER Three Pieces In Polytempic Polymicrotonality CD
"The author of these notes has spent his life explaining radical music, and the music on this disc may be the most radical I've ever written about. Peter Thoegersen (b. 1967) is not yet a name known to the music world; not for any lack of connection to other famous musicians, but because he came to composition late, and because his artistic aims are so broad and complex that they have taken years to evolve. His aesthetic is well defined, and he is upfront about having a name for it: 'Polytempic Polymicrotonal Music.' That means he has musical layers simultaneously moving in different tempos, plus, even more radically, that he has different microtonal scales playing at the same time. Few composers have aimed at such fervent and heterogeneous multidimensionality. And yet, while Thoegersen's music can seem overwhelming at first, running through it is a level of charm and simplicity that belies the initial impression. In total, these three pieces emphasize a particular side of Thoegersen's output. The image his music creates of ornately mathematical structures filled with intuitively friendly melodies maps on to the personality of the man himself: outspoken and acerbically ruthless in his musical opinions, Thoegersen is also marked by a jolly sense of humor and an inexhaustible love of cats and other animals that make him ultimately less imposing and more personable than he might seem at first. The same can be said for his music. And by going further than anyone else has gone in terms of this particularly American concept of fusing the polytempic with the polymicrotonal -- extending and combining the conceptual worlds of Ives, Cowell, Nancarrow, Partch, Carter, even Frank Zappa, and many others -- he has created a special place for himself within American music. --Kyle Gann (from the liner notes)"

VA One Instrument Volume 01 LP
One Instrument is run by Aimée Portioli aka Grand River. In a scenario of an overwhelming number of instruments, musicians often do not take the time to deepen and explore the creative possibilities of each piece of gear they possess. One Instrument Volume 01 aims to counter-act this tendency by challenging and limiting each artist in producing a composition by using only one instrument of their choice. The various artists format aims similarly to create a harmonious journey across different sub-genres in the ambient, techno and experimental worlds, which can perfectly embrace each other. One Instrument Volume 01 opens with a composition by In Bloom, the new project of Martino Bertola, who drives directly into a melodic ambience. Following it is the dense, polyrhythmic experiment by Fabian Kempe's project Korridor. Serena Butler's piece is built around spacey sounds and breezy rhythms. Yhdessa, the newly born Dutch-Italian duo formed by Grand River (Aimée Portioli) and Enrica Falqui, leans towards ambient atmospherics and ominous sonorities with a refined northern European touch. Yair Elazar Glotman ventures forth his contrabass skills, giving an acoustic touch to the record. Swedish producer Fjäder (Ida Matsdotter), handles the flip with a moody techno cut filled with evasive analog cues. Claudio PRC delivers an electroacoustic soundscape created with a tiny, graceful drone machine. The Dutch duo Wanderwelle closes the LP with a dreamy and delicate excursion evoking the mysterious sides of nature.

Adventurous, abstract, and deeply up-for-it rave music from Code Walk, a young Danish duo picked up for Peder Mannerfelt Produktion's first release of 2019 with Distance. They're most thrilling when they go fast, far-out, and near-weightless, as with the mercurial flow of opener "Distance", and with the scudding ghetto-tech bounce of "Red", and their smudged power ambient ace, "The Same As Me". The other tracks are perhaps more conventionally 'floor-focused, from the flinty breakbeat and noise jag of "Touch", to the soggy bass drum march and sci-fi synth strokes of "Streak", and the squared-off, cranky, Surgeon-esque buck of "Monitor".

TIGER & WOODS A.O.D. LP
Unshrouded in mystery: what once started as an anonymous underground project with stamped white labels and a clever take on sampling, has since then unfolded to be one of the longest-running and most successful teams in current dance music. Nurtured by the sounds of the past and blessed with the techniques of today, the music of Tiger & Woods always kept evolving in and around the tropes of disco, house, and boogie. Classic dance music, if you will. Celebrating their tenth anniversary in 2019, Marco Passarani and Valerio Delphi managed to arrive at album number three. A.O.D. is a pun on A.O.R. (adult oriented rock) and a play on their own sound. Defying the restricting rules electronic music record shop crates, it's a departure and an arrival at the same time. Inspired by the faded buildings and images of discotheques on the Italian countryside, the romantic start and bittersweet endings of summer, beach life, and the excitement of traveling through the landscape to get to aforementioned temples of dance and subsequently the morning after. Except for the 100% sample-free "1:00 am", everything on A.O.D. is based on a quiver of cleared samples from the Roman institution that is Claudio Donato and his Full Time and Goodymusic emporium. In Tiger & Woods' hometown Rome, the often very electronic and futuristic sound of Italo disco had a different twist; much more boogie-based and influenced by the song-writing styles of New York City's dance scene, it played in a league of its own. Tiger & Woods use these materials to take them apart, out of context and into contrasting areas. Molding something completely new, one gets fooled to recognize Sade songs that aren't, pop music instrumentals, and a reprise of memories that never existed. A ride through one's brain in a convertible with an Italian FM radio station playing in the background. Or to use less stiff poetry: a chill-out album you can dance to or a dance album you can chill out to. Adult oriented dance. Gatefold sleeve.

JOHNSON, CHUCK Blood Moon Boulder LP
"Chuck Johnson's impact on the contemporary guitar world continues to be felt. His first two solo records signaled the arrival of a unique player, steeped in various forms of playing and influence, yet distinctly modern. Johnson eschews a weathered traditionalism for the wide-scope expanse of 21st Century Americana. On his third album, Blood Moon Boulder, Johnson reaches a compositional peak in a nod to the picturesque naturalism of the American landscape. The dynamics of his range can be felt on this singular record, a soundtrack-like listen that rewards the ear with rich detail. His precision and tone recall the heights of Ry Cooder's Paris, Texas on the extended opening track 'Corvid Tactics.' Notably, the guitarist duels with a phantom Chinese radio signal that slips through the silences during the recording session. One can hear the ghostly sounds peek through at moments as Johnson bends his strings. 'Medicine Map' delivers a melodic melancholy, with an every-note-perfectly-placed aesthetic. Rather than ramble or evoke some kind of outdated nostalgia, Johnson lets his cinematic instincts take lead. Perhaps most evocative of this approach is 'Private Violence,' a meditative composition with gorgeous pedal steel played on top of electric six-string, ending in a sustained tonal minimalism that could easily stretch into a whole LP of its own. Blood Moon Boulder contains a lyricism, an exactitude and emotional arc all its own. And that's worth playing again and again." --Steve Lowenthal

JAB Erg Herbe LP
In 2018, John Also Bennett appeared on three collaborative full-length releases -- the CV & JAB album Thoughts Of A Dot As It Travels A Surface for Shelter Press (SHELTER 092LP), a fourth Forma album Semblance for Kranky, and Outside The Disc, a new album for his Seabat project with Forest Christenson. He also appeared on Christina Vantzou's solo album No. 4. Whilst work continues on these long running collaborations (as well as other projects with artists such as noted minimalist composer/performer Jon Gibson), 2019 will start for John with his first full-length solo release -- Erg Herbe. JAB says the record was gestated for nearly a decade while he worked out how to fully express his own sound and ideas. Erg Herbe began to emerge during 2017 and 2018, recorded alone during spare moments between collaborative projects. JAB uses a mixture of synthetic and organic instruments throughout the album, including modified Aphex Twin DX7 presets played using a just intonation tuning system, Eurorack oscillators "tuned according to intuitive structures using intervals of 30 hz," and a number of flutes including a Chinese "dizi" flute borrowed from his father, noted avant-garde poet and mail-artist John M. Bennett (a contemporary of New York underground poets Richard Kostelanetz and Steve Dalachinsky). Erg Herbe taps into the rich history of New York loft music. He also cites Takehisa Kosugi, Dominique Lawalrée, Jon Gibson, and Pauline Anna Strom as important influences. Beyond the cuts recorded in Brooklyn, there's also "Chanterai Por Mon Coraige" derived from the 13th century French troubadour song by Guiot de Dijon, on which two flute improvisations upon a theme were recorded blind from each other and then combined afterwards. Appropriately "Chanterai Por Mon Coraige" was recorded inside a decrepit mill in the French countryside at night. The title cut "Erg Herbe" features flute recorded inside Tilapia, a reverberant sculpture by Katsuhito Nishikawa at the Museum Insel Hombroich in Germany, which was then processed and overlaid with synthesizer in New York. "Distant Patterns" juxtaposes dry, pulsating oscillators with pillowy, occasionally dissonant pads, while a raga-like alto flute melody glides and dances over top. "Erg Herbe" in an invented turn of phrase -- "erg" being the term for a sea of desert sand dunes, and "herbe" being French for grass -- summoning the dreamlike image of a green, rolling dunescape. Artwork by Zin Taylor. Mastered by Rashad Becker at Dubplates & Mastering. 140 gram vinyl; printed inner and outer reverse-board jacket.

REIDY, JULIA Brace, Brace LP
Brace, Brace is Julia Reidy's spellbinding return to Slip, rendering a shimmering, introspective solo dialog on 12-string guitar laced with soaring but unsettling vocal processes and spectral electronics. With an uncanny, even unsettling ability to hold her listener's ear-gaze, Julia's follow-up to 2017's Dawning On finds the Berlin-based Aussie continuing to recontextualize her instrument with elegant precision to yield a sublime tension between her heavy-lidded vocals and iridescent strings. In Julia's remarkable opener "Of Neither", strings fluidly cascade from her fingertips into an amniotic soundsphere of field recordings and gently fleeting synth figures. When combined with the deep dreaming AI texture of her autotuned vocals and wind-blown harmonica, the effect recalls a sort of midnight Tuareg blues half-remembered from a fevered sleep. It's deeply beautiful stuff, periodically fading into and out of the light, only to return with more intense inflection and density, yet ever-more spaced out, leading to the internal pocket of "Lament" and its achingly coaxed secrets. With recipients suitably defocused and in pliable state, Julia takes the whole other side to play on that line between organic and processed material, slipping from noirish, filmic intrigue into the middle distance where her rustic coruscations twirl in a set dance with their spectral reflections. RIYL: John Fahey, Hope Sandoval, Talk Talk, Yoshi Wada, Jim O'Rourke. Edition of 300.

KOURTESIS, SOFIA Sofia Kourtesis 12"
On her self-titled debut EP, Sofia Kourtesis channels experiences of her transatlantic existence between hometowns Lima and Berlin through a torrent of sounds, rhythms, voices, and loops. This world-travelling, MPC-busting, Gold Panda-collaborating maverick's first appearance was with 2018's "WinWin San", a sparkly, razor sharp dance diamond which was received as one of the highlights of Studio Barnhus Volym 1. A self-confessed "travelling bedroom producer", Sofia started the process of writing her debut solo outing with a journey into the Amazon jungle. Stops were also made in front of a dusty Juno 106 in her Berlin bedroom and a Tokyo flea-market.

GUY, LAURENCE Making Music Is Bad For Your Self Esteem 12"
For his Studio Barnhus debut, Laurence Guy connects the dots between the lo-fi ambient investigations of his 2017 album Saw You For The First Time, the warm club sounds heard on All I See Is Her (MUSIQ 220EP, 2018), and the London-based DJ/producer's long roots in deep drum'n'bass and dubstep soil. From the unswerving neo-jungle of "Wildlife", through "My Brain Is A Scrambled Egg" with its dusty rave euphorisms, onwards to the hypnotic guitar ballad "It's Good To Try", this six-track EP is chock-full of the sort of unrestrained musical enthusiasm that Studio Barnhus is always on the lookout for.

"Gekko No Odoriko" ("Moonshine Dancer"): the rhythm, as usual, is a driving force in the music. "Holy Water": visiting the holy mountain near Nara national park, the impossible seemed so simple: capturing water. "Amanogawa" ("Milky Way") extrudes the blink of an eye to an endless state of floating in a field of zero gravity. With "Ortho Vision" the last sprout of zest for action is moving along the handrail of the beat grid until it's complete evanescence.

FORSTER, ROBERT Inferno CD
"The jungle is coming up to the door, The birds that are calling are hard to ignore" Inferno is acclaimed Australian singer-songwriter Robert Forster's first solo album since 2015 -- his second album over the last eleven years. Forster only makes records when he feels he has the songs -- on Inferno, he has nine he totally believes in. They range from the exhilarating top-ten pop of "Inferno (Brisbane In Summer)", the beach shack groove of "Life Has Turned A Page", via the 1977 New York strut of "Remain", to finish in a way that this concise, brilliant, drama- and wit-filled album only can -- on the big build epic "One Bird In The Sky". Inferno was made in Berlin in 2018, during the hottest German summer in decades. Noted producer/engineer Victor Van Vugt -- Beth Orton Trailer Park (1996), PJ Harvey's Stories From The City, Stories From The Sea (2000) -- recorded the album; the first time he and Forster had worked together since Van Vugt engineered Forster's debut solo album classic Danger In The Past in Berlin in 1990. Inferno in its making is a perfect mix of the familiar and the new. Also working with Forster again, are Brisbane based multi-instrumentalists Scott Bromley and Karin Bãumler from Songs to Play (TR 324CD/LP, 2015), while new recruits are drummer Earl Havin (Tindersticks, Mary J. Blige) and keyboardist Michael Muhlhaus (Blumfeld, Kante). Four musicians from the corners of the world, who, with Van Vugt's bold and beautiful production, sound like a band of the ages. In front of them, Forster delivers the best vocal performances of his career over the last four years Forster has been busy. He curated the acclaimed, Domino Records released, Anthology Volume 1 1978-1984 on his old band The Go-Betweens. His memoir Grant & I was Mojo and Uncut's "Book Of The Year". He continues to publish music journalism, play concerts, and he never stops writing beautiful songs.

DITTO, CHARLES In Human Terms LP
"In the mid-80s, an original form of music was discovered on the midi-capable little planet of Austin, Texas. At the age of 32, Charles Ditto would release his first solo album applying cutting edge computers and synthesizers of the era (Roland DX7, Roland MKS-20, Roland MKS-80, Sequential Circuits Profit 2000 along with a Macintosh SE), creating a unique and detailed world that was inspired by Cluster, Eno & The Residents. In Human Terms bridges the gap between contemporary classical and minimal pop. Rhythmic but melodically abstract. Microtonal and organic. Often described as experimental electronics, tone poems or Cyber-delic-psychotropic-avant-garde. In Human Terms, remains very emotion, deep and different. Ditto's music imparts a new listening experience that is still somewhat indescribable today, but remains approachable and relatable."

MUNK Teutonik Disaster 2x12"
Compilation originally released 2003 on Gomma records. Compiled and reworked by Munk and Kapote in 2019; re-release on Toy Tonics. Toy Tonics label heads Mathias Munk Modica and Kapote present Teutonik Disaster, a very special compilation with eight edits and reworks of rare German new wave funk and disco punk from 1979 to 1983. There have been millions of typical disco edits in the last years. But there is so much more interesting music from the late 1970s and early '80s yet to bubble its way to the surface. One of those lesser explored fields is the crazy funky side of Germany's underground disco and new wave from that period. At the time, many German bands were trying to make their own version of English and American styles. After Kraftwerk and Can had started to use the German language in a cool, new way, many bands that followed in their steps experimented with German new wave. Most of these bands didn't reach a bigger audience. Their records never got pressed to more than 300-500 copies as they were a number of years ahead of the huge commercial explosion of German pop in 1984: The NDW, aka "Neue Deutsche Welle", with Nena's humongous hit "99 Red Balloons". The bands featured on the compilation released their music before the NDW hype and later broke up. Plenty of these early bands are best forgotten, but if you dig deeper you'll find the gems, bursting with style and attitude. And that's just what Toy Tonics heads Mathias Munk Modica and Kapote did. They hit gold. Most of these tracks have already been released on the original Teutonik Disaster compilation in 2003 on Gomma Records. Gomma was the label that Mathias Munk Modica started before Toy Tonics 15 years ago, where he released records with James Murphy, WhoMadeWho, Asia Argento, etc. Gomma is not active anymore, but it felt like the right time to re-release this compilation in 2019. Munk and Toy Tonics partner Kapote made new versions of these rare songs, adding drum machines and extended them. The result is unbelievable music, heavy funk basslines, soulful vibes, cool vocals that you would be hard pressed to expect from Germans, and a vibe that slots in perfectly in 2019's post-techno and post-deep house scenario. Features Die Heteros, Camilla Motor, Exkurs, Carmen, Explorer, BBB, Roter Mund, and Die Chefs.

COLEMAN, ORNETTE Change Of The Century LP
Wax Love present a reissue of Ornette Coleman's Change Of The Century, originally released in in 1960. The second album by Ornette Coleman's legendary quartet featuring Don Cherry, Charlie Haden, and Billy Higgins, Change Of The Century is every bit the equal of the monumental The Shape Of Jazz To Come (1959), showcasing a group that was growing ever more confident in its revolutionary approach and the chemistry in the bandmembers' interplay. When Coleman concentrates on melody, his main themes are catchier, and when the pieces emphasize group interaction, the improvisation is freer. Two of Coleman's most memorable classic compositions are here in their original forms -- "Ramblin'" has all the swing and swagger of the blues, and "Una Muy Bonita" is oddly disjointed, its theme stopping and starting in totally unexpected places. An American free-jazz classic from one of the biggest names in the genre.

Mingus's arrangements are, as always, top notch with an unparalleled understanding of space and melody, and the playing is without doubt up to his standards. Dorothy Ashby was perhaps not Detroit's most famous female jazz harpist as that distinction belongs to Alice Coltrane but she was notably the first and a trailblazer who overcame massive setbacks throughout her nearly 30-year recording career. Playing on an instrument not usually associated with jazz, in a male dominated field, Ashby is a true and amazing original. Originally released in 1962, and with the help of a rhythm section of Herman Wright on bass and John Tooley on drums, Dorothy Ashby is one of her earliest titles as a leader and a beautiful piece of innovative mid-century jazz. A mix of originals and tastefully selected covers like Ellington's "Satin Doll" and Neal Hefti's "Li'l Darlin'" this is another lost jazz classic resuscitated by Wax Love.

MINGUS, CHARLES Right Now: Live At The Jazz Workshop LP
Wax Love present a reissue of Charles Mingus's Right Now: Live At The Jazz Workshop, originally released in 1966. "With Clifford Jordan on tenor, John Handy on alto, Jane Getz on piano, and Dannie Richmond on drums, Charles Mingus went into San Francisco and whipped up a storm. This LP contains two compositions over 23-minutes each: 'New Fables' and 'Meditation (For A Pair Of Wire Cutters)'. 'New Fables' features a ten-minute solo from Jordan, some fine ensemble work, and a solo encounter from Handy. Mingus changes the mood as he sees fit, and one would describe these different styles as avant-garde (in 1964), blues, flamenco, and straight-ahead jazz. Handy's work is stirring, deeply imaginative, technically thrilling, and a harbinger of what was to come the following year at Monterey. In 'Meditations' Mingus bowing the bass in the cello range with that certain sad quality, Jane Getz playing loose, free, and exciting, much as she does today, and a moment where Mingus joins Getz for a fourhanded piano romp. The piece is a flowing ballad, but there are constant changes throughout..." -AllAboutJazz

While so much attention is paid to his titles on Blue Note, Contemporary, and Prestige, Sonny Rollins's RCA sessions from the early '60s are some of his finest sessions and they don't get nearly the attention they deserve. In 1962 alone he released two classic titles, The Bridge and this album, What's New? Featuring Jim Hall on guitar and Candido on percussion, among other heavy hitting session musicians, What's New? is particularly remarkable for the Rollins' originals including the blazing, Latin influenced "Jungoso" which features one of the most forceful solos of his career. Credit for this album is partially due to Miles Davis, who had somewhat recently purchased Coltrane his first soprano saxophone, previously it had been little used in jazz. This 1961 album also seems to fully mark Coltrane's transformation into modal jazz, another Davis influence, and his modal take on the classic standard, "My Favorite Things", from The Sound Of Music soundtrack, remains one of the more iconic jazz songs in history. Rounded out by three more standards, performed in modal interpretations that completely redefined the meaning of a "standards" album, My Favorite Things, is one of the many transcendent jazz albums the legendary John Coltrane is responsible for.

NORMAL BRAIN Lady Maid LP
LP version. WRWTFWW Records present the reissue of impossible-to-find cult album Lady Maid by Japanese outfit Normal Brain. Originally released in 1981 as a limited vinyl pressing of 300 copies on Agi Yuzuru's fabled experimental label Vanity Records (R.N.A. Organism, Dada, Sympathy Nervous, Tolerance), Lady Maid is a testament to the creativity of the early '80s Japanese electronic and experimental scene, encapsulating a prolific era when audio gear became affordable for musicians to explore sounds in the comfort of their home, free from studio time pressure and major label rules. Entirely imagined and brought to life by an inspired Yukio Fujimoto, the six-track opus was conceived with a Korg MS-20, Korg SQ-10, Boss Dr. Rhythm DR-55, and a Texas Instruments Speak & Spell. It's elegantly minimalist, honest and witty, very playful, cleverly pop, and downright fascinating. The A side captures the fun side of avant-garde electronica, lo-fi wave, proto-glitch, and IDM, a joyful ride beautifully interrupted by the cinematic mood switch of the B side -- a 20-minute ambient piece flirting with sci-fi, melancholy, and hints of metallic darkness. Unclassifiable and marvelous! Includes liner notes by acclaimed sound artist and mastermind behind the project, Yukio Fujimoto.

ORAM, DAPHNE Oramics 4LP
2019 repress edition. Originally released in 2010. Deluxe clear four-LP edition, 155 minutes/eight sides of vinyl mastered and cut at Dubplates & Mastering and housed in a heavyweight, 300gm gatefold sleeve featuring rare archival photographs. This hugely influential, definitive collection from electronic music pioneer and founder of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop, Daphne Oram, has been out of print on vinyl since 2013 and is now thankfully available again via Modern Love side-label, Young Americans. Throughout her life, Oram was a wildly original musician, inventor and theorist who refused to bow to convention. While Delia Derbyshire had more or less become a household name, it was only when Clive Graham compiled Oramics for a CD release in 2007 that Daphne's legacy started to extend beyond the fringes. In the intervening years (aided by the work of the Daphne Oram Trust and Oram's archive at Goldsmith's in London) there have been countless articles, features, a play, an exhibition at the science museum and even a creative arts building and several record labels and arts awards named in Daphne's honor -- going some way to restore her place as a recognized pioneer of electronic music. To recap, Oram was the founder of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop, a department she more or less single-handedly created in 1958 camping out at the BBC studios for nights on end splicing tapes and working with various modified machines to carefully arrange her abstract soundscapes. Eventually the BBC bent under her pressure and, in studio 13, created the soon-to-be-legendary Radiophonic Workshop -- with Oram its first director. Among her countless other achievements, Oram is also cited as the first woman to design and build an electronic musical instrument, one that worked around the "drawn-sound" technique whereby strips of 35mm film would be manipulated before being fed into her home-made "Oramics" machine which would convert and "read" the film into sound. She was also a prolific writer and lecturer on electronic music and studio techniques, developing concepts of spatial sound years before terms like "spatial sound" were even used. Despite her considerable and historic list of achievements, Oram's life and work remained largely unknown by the wider public for many years until Clive Graham compiled this set. Spanning 44 tracks, it demonstrates Oram's work as some of the most varied and groundbreaking electronic music ever made. As opposed to so much of the Radiophonic-era material that has surfaced over the last few decades, Oram's work is often characterized by a much more layered and introspective quality, offsetting playful interludes and commercial recordings with beautiful, immersive pieces like the breathtaking "Pulse Persephone" and "Bird of Parallax" -- highly atmospheric and experimental variants of musique concrète and tape music that still take our breath away 45 years later. It's impossible to over-emphasize the importance and influence of the material compiled on Oramics, a set that should be considered compulsory listening for anyone with even just a passing interest in electronic music.
