COLADERA La Dotu Lado CD
Brazil, Portugal, and Cape Verde resound in the beguiling songs of this acoustic trio. Latin American and African tinged rhythms, connected by the Portuguese language. La Dôtu Lado is the second album of the transatlantic project Coladera, presenting the various styles of lusophone music. Led by Brazilian guitarist Vitor Santana and João Pires, his Portuguese counterpart, who also sings and plays guitar. The album brought together a number of collaborations that included José Eduardo Agualusa, Aline Frazão, Dino Santiago, Bilan, Ana Sofia Paiva, Edu Mundo, Brisa Marques, and Marcos Suzano: three musical universes that honor the lusophone rhythms. Brazil, Portugal, and Cape Verde merge into a dialogue of guitars, percussions, and voices, bringing together the rhythms of samba and the northeast region of Brazil, the funaná, the morna, the coladera and the batuque of Cape Verde, the Portuguese fado or the Angolan lundum. Coladera was named after the rhythm born of the Morna, the traditional Cape Verdean music, which in turn is derived from Portuguese fado and Angolan lundum. This unique musical universe is interpreted in a raw, beguiling way by Coladera.

DIODATI YELLOW SQUEEDS, FRANCESCO Never The Same CD
Three years after his previous work (Flow, Home, 2015), Italian guitarist and composer Francesco Diodati releases Never The Same, his latest and long-awaited album as a leader. He's back with the same band, Yellow Squeeds with Enrico Zanisi (piano, synth), Francesco Lento (trumpet), Glauco Benedetti (tuba, valve trombone), and Enrico Morello (drums), and the same label, Auand Records. His name has become one of the most renowned ones in the Italian and European music scene: working and touring extensively with Enrico Rava, he has also proved his personality and innovative attitude on his works as a leader. At the core of Never The Same is a deep reflection on individual perceptions and team work and on the countless transformations these two elements can generate even on the most basic melody. What dominates the composing side is "several layers of sounds overlapping," Diodati says, "intertwining lines becoming mutually essential, albeit maintaining their own independence. This way of building music ensures, for example, that the same tune can be perceived in a different way by each listener. It's like looking at the same 3D object from different perspectives, in your hands or suspended in space." This approach generates the apparently alienating effect that can be heard on "Entanglement", with its constantly changing rhythm. Diodati states, "On our previous album, Zanisi played the piano, while he's doubling on Fender Rhodes, modular synth and bass synth now. I gave Morello a ton of Burmese gongs, which I collected along my trips and live shows in Myanmar, and we played those in the intro of 'Simple Lights'. Glauco Benedetti turned out so surprisingly well on the valve trombone that I rewrote some parts to add it. Francesco Lento brings so many different sounds out of his trumpet, making the timber possibilities endless. He can be truly lyric as well as angular and harsh. We often converse very fast, and this became more and more intense over the years. They are all impressive musicians. I chose them because they break boundaries, and go beyond what's common." As the likes of "River" show, sometimes their interplay is the starting point of an enchanting sound flow, built on the melody and ending in a dense collective improvisation. And while they're playing with an out-of-tune instrument, focusing on timber or exchanging roles in the lineup, the album cover also catches the eye, embracing the whole idea of the album.

"Pavel Milyakov aka Buttechno is mostly known for his brilliant take on dance music, but we're also big fans of his avant-garde ambient material. This LP combines the amorphous electronic soundscapes of Artemiev with the strangeness of Chiastic-Slide Autechre and the beautiful expansiveness of Pete Kember's best work. It could be a spiked film noir soundtrack... and it's also great because it sounds like a late-night walk around Moscow (at least to us)." Gatefold sleeve by Will Bankhead.

HOUSEWIVES Twilight Splendour CD
London five-piece Housewives return for more anarchic genre-blending adventures on their second LP, Twilight Splendour. The album is a synthesized collage written in Wetherspoons, cafes and anywhere away from their houseboats where they could find a permanent electrical supply. Exploring the possibilities of electronic sound, this new LP marks a turning point for the band - who sold their guitars to buy midi equipment and swapped London rents for water habitation. Bringing to mind the digital meditations of legendary producer Oneohtrix Point Never, Twilight Splendour presents a love letter from an early AI to its owner, its concept-led songs strewn with "ecstatic messages of frustration and a desire to connect". Since forming five years ago, Housewives have drawn from such diverse scenes as post-punk, jazz, drone, electronic and avant-garde. 2013 saw the release of an eponymous debut EP via Brighton label Faux Discx, while their first-full length record, Work - recorded at a barn in a desolate corner in the south of France - arrived in 2015. 2017 live album FF06116 (LAUNCH 116LP) marked the band's first collaboration with experimental saxophonist Ben Vince. Following on from these early statements, Housewives are now set to unleash their game-changing new album, turning away from performance-based writing, the human, and facing the cold light of computers head-on.

GRAHAM, DAVY Midnight Man CD
"Davy Graham is recognized as an early influential figure on the 1960s British folk scene, where he inspired many famous practitioners of the fingerstyle acoustic guitar such as Bert Jansch, Paul Simon, John Martyn and indeed Jimmy Page. Not one to be categorised Graham could be seen as a true world music artist covering the genres of folk, blues and jazz. He also popularized DADGAD tuning, later widely adopted by many acoustic guitarists. Midnight Man was Davy's 2nd solo release for Decca and showed notable growth as he was actively changing and extending himself musically. The playing here was more extroverted and more aggressive, musically, a result of his increased experience and growing maturity as an artist. Recorded following his travels to Ibiza, through the Aegean and on to Constantinople, he was deeply influenced by the sounds he heard, and -- in contrast -- was experimenting with amplification. The resulting work was rich in its experimental approach to conventional blues and modern jazz pieces, and his incredible excursion with Lalo Schifrin's 'The Fakir' was the instrumental 'hit' on this album, just as 'Maajun' was on his groundbreaking Folk Blues and Beyond record. Remastered, with liner notes by David Fricke."

XOLOTL, BERNARD Last Wave CD
Bureau B presents a reissue of Bernard Xolotl's fifth album Last Wave, originally released only on cassette in 1982. This is French electronic music from California. He named himself after the Aztec god of lightning and death; his music is influenced by the Berlin school of electronic music. As a teen, Xolotl (b. 1951) was introduced to electronic music through the works of Musique Concrete composers like Pierre Henry and Pierre Schaeffer, although he found the early recordings of Pink Floyd to be more inspirational. During the early 1970s, Xolotl began creating music of his own, working in studios across Europe and the US before settling in California in 1974, where he built his own studio. Between 1978 and 1981, he recorded four solo cassette albums. On Last Wave, Xolotl expanded his musical palette with new instruments such as the Yamaha CS60 and the PPG. Includes previously unissued bonus track.Xolotl on the process of Last Wave: "The first Last Wave I started while still living in San Francisco, a simple and longish piece which could be used as a background for the concerts I was giving with Daniel Kobialka and Richard Horowitz. However, after I moved to the residential suburb of Marin to build up my studio, I kept adding tracks to it so it just became part of my next album. This was going to have more instruments; I got to do everything myself, playing and recording one track at a time. But mixing there was still out of the question; I had to wait for the right opportunity to use a San Francisco studio with the best reverb and acoustics. This took several years in the end and was the last album I didn't mix at home. It was also the last 'analog' album and the 'last' of many other 'things' which made the title very significant in my life."

TELLAVISION Add Land LP
LP version. " 'You can't walk on water/ but you can swim in it/ the coast is clear/ add land from here': A slow, slightly erratic pulse ripples underneath Tellavision's voice as she sings -- evoking the fears which paralyze us, the fears which inspire us. Magnetic fields crackle over a sharply contoured yet dimly lit beat on Add Land, the new Tellavision album. It doesn't take much for her voice to shine . . . Add Land, the fourth Tellavision album, is a rigorous exercise in musical reduction, reaching new levels of intricacy and virtuosity which prove to be warmer and more touching than ever. For a decade, Tellavision has been one of our most exciting sonic inventors, carving out her own inimitable style through her previous three albums, two EPs, and countless tracks. New music abstractions echo against a backdrop of old krautrock mechanical motorik rhythms, allied to the physically gripping immediacy of techno and noise . . .Add Land marks a departure, a shift, a move towards a new horizon, 'the coast is clear/ add land from here'. Tellavision has severed those connections which increasingly felt like constraints to her -- the close link to machines, for example, the way her voice became entangled in electronic sounds. Now, her vocals occupy a clear space in the foreground, whilst she still chooses to add her own choral voice on some songs. The difference is that these choirs no longer blur her subjectivity, instead they serve to magnify or multiply it. No matter the flutters, shivers and doubts in the shadows, there is a new strength in evidence here, a new steadfastness in her music: Add Land is an upbeat, optimistic work, meeting the world head on. Fear may be a leitmotif on Add Land, but the spotlight is directed more towards the love which enables us to overcome our fears: our love for each other, for ourselves . . . Once again, Tellavision has written and recorded all of the songs herself. She was joined on production by Thies Mynther, better known to us as one half of the Phantom/Ghost duo, who met Tellavision through one of her more recent theatrical works . . . Tellavision has never sounded so immediate, so confident, so very much in the moment. This is her finest album to date: 'Drop utopia/ drop dystopia/ it's all here.' " --Jens Balzer (translation Gareth Davies)

ORTOLANI, RIZ Farewell Uncle Tom LP
Dagored present a vinyl reissue of the soundtrack for Farewell Uncle Tom ("Addio Zio Tom"), complete with extra tracks. Italian directors Gualtiero Jacopetti and Franco Prosperi gave birth to a whole new subgenre of "non-fiction" exploitation movies with their 1962 hit Mondo Cane. After repeated accusations of forgery, unethical behaviors, and war crimes, they decided to make a movie about the atrocities of American slavery as an apology of sorts. It was 1971 and the movie was Farewell Uncle Tom ("Addio Zio Tom"). The famous critic Roger Ebert called the result "the most disgusting, contemptuous insult to decency ever to masquerade as a documentary." Naked flesh, voyeurism, and violence is constantly used but gorgeous photography and a memorable score from Academy Award nominee Riz Ortolani add a sickening slickness to it all: rock-beat tunes mixed with classic big band themes, waltz, and funny marches and the beautiful "Oh My Love", with the vocals from Katyna Ranieri, used, among many others by Winding Refn in his cult movie Drive (2011).

BRECHT & CHRISTIAN PROMMER, JOHANNES Page Blanche 12"
In 2016, Johannes Brecht and Christian Prommer started a project together called Voix Grave (DIYNAMIC 089EP), where they composed a classical piece of music together, and subsequently each made their own electronic music interpretation of it. Now, in 2019, it's time for the follow up: Page Blanche. Progressive staccato dabs on the viola set a gloomy scenery, when a gentle bassoon starts to caress the composition with its warm tones. More dark strings enter and crescendo into almost a march, then dissolving into a quiet violin whisper, only to return to full staccato force, played sul ponticello.

ULLMANN, JAKOB Fremde Zeit Addendum 5 CD
Edition RZ presents Jakob Ullmann's Fremde Zeit Addendum 5, a supplement to Fremde Zeit Addendum (RZ 1026-28CD, 2011). CD comes in carton sleeve with flap (to be added to Fremde Zeit Addendum box -- CDs 1-4), with booklet in German and English."Do we hear what we know? How, if this is obscured? Sent on a journey of discovery into the audible, at first almost nothing appears here. But once the ear has become accustomed to the intermediate realm of the pianissimo, an abundance of timbres becomes apparent, everyday noises unexpectedly dispersing in their non-spatial aura, then the surprising appearances of short tonal shapes, which enter the flow of time standing still as if they were revelations of the ear itself with no possibility to guess their origin, verifiable on the instrument. After all, it is in fact the tone which is the improbable, out of all that is weaving in and out within the grounding, static sound, like a distant army of constellations below, taking place uneventfully at the level of the permanent. 'solo V' is not an instrumental piece for a soloist in the ordinary sense. The grand piano becomes an unknown sound body. Although there is a soloist, they could hardly carry out the performance on their own, requiring either pre-produced electronic playback or, as in the present recording by Lukas Rickli, the participation of three assistants sustaining a soundscape. Ullmann conceived a sonic space in which sound is subjected to the laws of a specific 'gravity'. Its meridians range continuously from noise to tone and from shortest single event to sustained continuity, but what constitutes the true aura of this space is its reduced dynamics, and a rhythmic sense that is averse to any kind of melody in the usual sense. 'solo V' is also 'solistic' in another way: there is no fixed notated score, it must first be created individually, and so hardly ever will any performance score be the same as another. Rickli and his partner Zora Marti had a variety of graphic and notated material at their disposal for the development of the temporal form. Following the composer's graphically notated glissandi, Rickli and Marti modify the sound of the centers and generate transitions with them. The piece to be heard unfolds in a pulsating, breathing pianissimo. Hardly bringing any instrument to mind, it opens up a harmonic cosmos, urging the listener into it -- because other than through listening to the barely recognizable, nothing is revealed. --Rainer Schmusch, translated by Peter Gebert.

MORESCHI, ALESSANDRO The Last Castrato LP
Alessandro Moreschi (1858-1922) was the last known castrato, and the only one to have ever made recordings. He was born into a Catholic family in one of the so-called Roman castles, where he was castrated either for health reasons, or because of his singing talents, the history is unclear. But either way he was discovered soon after for his talents and by a very young age was known as "l'Angelo Di Roma" and quickly became the first soprano of the Sistine Chapel choir, a position he held for more than 30 years. In Roma at the time members of the Sistine Chapel choir, and castrati in particular, held much esteem, bordering on celebrity, and Moreschi was probably the most famous of them all. His recordings were made in 1902 and 1904 at the Vatican. Most of them are extremely rare and are collected here for the first time. This historic re-issue includes all twelve records which Professor Moreschi is known to have made, as well as five choral records on which his voice is clearly discernable. 425 gram sleeve; hand-numbered sticker.

RITCHIE, JEAN Singing The Traditional Songs Of Her Kentucky Mountain Family LP
Fantôme Phonographique present a reissue of Jean Ritchie Singing The Traditional Songs Of Her Kentucky Mountain Family, originally released as a 10" in 1952. In the world of American folk music, Jean Ritchie was a truly unique presence. Most of the younger artists of the folk revival of the '50s and '60s were middle class urbanites and liberal arts college students who helped "rediscover" the older traditional artists of the South. Though these two groups intermingled at concerts and the younger artists idolized the "true" folk artists, Jean Ritchie was an anomaly in that she fit equally in each crowd. Born in Viper, Kentucky in 1922, Jean was born into The Ritchies of Perry County, who were considered one of the two great ballad-singing families of Kentucky celebrated among folk song scholars. The youngest of 14 children, Jean had Appalachian folk music in her blood, learning dozens of songs at a very early age from her parents and siblings. By college she was a master of traditional song and it was there that she met Alan Lomax who brought her to New York where she quickly began performing and mingling with Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, and the like. Though she would appear on Library of Congress compilations and various other Lomax related recordings, this 1952 release is her first proper album and you will not find a more beautiful example of traditional Appalachian dulcimer and folk singing than Jean Ritchie Singing The Traditional Songs Of Her Kentucky Mountain Family. Another essential piece of obscure Americana to have new life breathed into it by Fantôme Phonographique. 425 gram sleeve; hand-numbered sticker.

LAURENZI, DUSTIN Snaketime: The Music of Moondog LP
Chicago saxophonist Dustin Laurenzi, a touring member of Justin Vernon's Bon Iver and one-third of the inventive Chicago improvising collective Twin Talk, first encountered the music of Moondog a decade ago, while studying at Indiana University. "Initially, I liked the quirkiness of the music and the lore surrounding him," he says. "I had always thought that there was potential for the music to be reimagined in a more improvised context, but it took a long time for that to actually happen," explains Laurenzi. In fact, it wasn't until a couple of years ago that he formed a versatile octet designed to interpret and expand on those sounds. "I started listening to more of his music and I became really obsessed with it, especially a lot of the rounds on his 1971 record Moondog 2. That music is really meticulous contrapuntally and rhythmically, but also super catchy and groovy." Several of the pieces featured on that octet's riveting debut Snaketime: The Music of Moondog, including "Nero's Expedition", "Lament I", "Bird's Lament", and "Down is Up" utilize rounds, or perpetual canons. Laurenzi assembled a dazzling group of Chicago improvisers for the group, and his inventive arrangements of the material created various paths for each musician to extrapolate on the source material, whether through the extended passage bass clarinetist Jason Stein takes on the opening track "Nero's Expedition" over the polyrhythmic groove meted out by percussionists Ryan Packard and Quin Kirchner and bassist Matt Ulery before the rest of the ensemble chimes in, or the way the leader's imploring, powerfully sobbing tenor solo cleaves the cycling melody and practically silences his bandmates before they gently reenter. "Fiesta Piano Solo" deftly expands on the original solo piano work, engaging each horn player to contribute to a buoyantly infectious round robin party, where each statement lifts and inspires the next. The album was recorded live at Chicago's Hungry Brain in January of 2018, but Laurenzi didn't expect to release the music until he listened back later. The ensemble -- which also includes guitarist Dave Miller, trumpeter Chad McCullough, and alto saxophonist Nick Mazzarella -- was carefully assembled: a mixture of players Laurenzi had worked with or had desired to. There's an inescapably human, idiosyncratic vibe to the album, coursing with raw emotion and fragile beauty that both honors the distinctive spirit of Moondog and creates something utterly fresh at the same time. Edition of 500.

MELCHIOR, LETHA RODMAN Mare Australe LP
"Another brilliant posthumous album by Letha Rodman Melchior. Letha's music, as her visual art, was a great collaged pile of extreme strangeness, with seemingly irreconcilable objects butting heads in ways that end up making great sense. I met Letha a long time ago, when she was in Cell, but I had not much idea of her work beyond that until she had moved to North Carolina and I started hearing her health was bad. Siltbreeze put out an amazing album called Handbook for Mortals (2013), and it was essential listening. Letha managed to create very very warped music without making it off-putting. Although her sonics were whacked as hell, they were created with such a warm and gooey center that even people who'd usually shy away from such things, would ask what was playing when we floated the album through the store's stereo system. Siltbreeze followed up with the ungodly brilliant, Shimmering Ghost (2015), after cancer claimed another genius, and we were stunned when Dan Melchior offered us the chance to do this LP. Letha Rodman Melchior was a truly singular artist. And it is with great pride that Feeding Tube presents another chapter of her largely undocumented saga." --Byron Coley, 2019

FUNKE, MAXINE Home Fi LP
"Vinylization of the recent Home Fi cassette (originally released on the Australian Brierfirld Flood Press label) by this magnificent New Zealand singer/songwriter. We were never able to score a copy of the tape, despite the fact we released Maxine's last LP, Silk (FTR 410LP), so we figured we would perform the public service of making it generally available to the whole wide world. That's just the kind of guys we are! Recorded in stark and simple terms, Home Fi represents Ms. Funke working mostly with just acoustic guitar accompaniment. And it's a classic. Most often, I'm put in mind of the Dandelion era recordings of Britain's Bridget St. John. There's a plainspoken quality to the songs and an equally straight forward approach to the musical bits that may not be indicative of the scope of Maxine's musical art (which has lots of space for odd noises and techniques), but it sounds just gorgeous. Hard to imagine anyone who actually likes music not falling for the sound of Home Fi. But hey, there's a clown born every minute. Not you of course. But look around sometime." --Byron Coley, 2019 Edition of 400.

ABBOTT, LUKE Music From The Edge Of An Island LP
Float welcomes their second artist into the fold. UK electronic artist and Szun Waves band member Luke Abbott, presents a special ten-track album to celebrate Piano Day 2019 (March 29th) -- an international event series initiated by Nils Frahm which acts as a platform for piano-related projects. Music From The Edge Of An Island sees Abbott divert from his typically experimental electronic style to explore a more compositional approach centered around VST instruments. Rather than the usual themes of synthesis and improvisation, the album is led by piano motifs, structured around emotive melodies and sparkling arrangements. The record began as a part of a soundtrack commission by producer/actor Jessica Hynes for her film The Fight and ultimately became a fully-realized album. The film script had a coastal setting that created the record's thematic idea: "I had this idea about being on the edge of England, almost ready to fall off a cliff into the sea but keeping your balance on the edge." The idea of writing for the piano had been ruminating for some months as Abbott found himself spending an increasing amount of time playing on the instrument. Without a piano of his own though, he found a strangely enchanting way to fulfil his creative impulse. "I used to have an upright piano, but I'd given it away when I last moved house, so I ended up using a piano VST in the computer, which I actually really enjoyed. Writing the music became a bit of a weird fantasy process." The writing process was remarkably quick, resulting in simple yet inspired pieces that subtly blur the lines between MIDI computer music, and live performance. Music From The Edge Of An Island can be seen as a collection of gentle reveries that sway between the twilight hours, marked by moments of soft, contemplative ballads and more active and expansive motions. Opening track "Sea" begins with a mysterious piano waltz before unnerving synth drones take over. "Island" continues with piano triplet figures plus added orchestration of cello strokes and airy glass pads, before heading into the melancholic "Tree", bringing in more strings and added pathos heard in the restless piano motif. Quieter passages are contrasted with the Gamelan-esque "Moments" and the uplifting "On Rope", whilst more lyrical moments on the album can be found in tracks such as "Adjustment" and closing track "A Different Tree".

VA India Gets Physical Vol. 1 CD
India: an ancient land of abundant spices, colorful languages, vibrant cultures, infinite beliefs, and ever-shifting terrains. This 5000-year-old society was one of the earliest in the world to philosophize and document the natural relationship between music and human spirituality. And through the decades of the recent past, modern India has been interestingly unique (and highly accommodative) to contemporary and global electronic dance music. This, in turn, has developed into fertile soil for local DJs and producers, to thrive and bloom across the motherland. From India's capital (New Delhi) to its major cities (Mumbai, Calcutta, Bangalore) and emerging cities (Hyderabad, Pune, Pondicherry) -- all shades of contemporary house and techno are now being accepted as the popular pulse for their nights. It's fascinating how this fairly recent "western" phenomenon has now deeply woven itself into India's "eastern" culture and rich musical tapestry. But then again, electronic music could never be "claimed" by any particular country or continent. Through the past 16 years, supporters and followers of Get Physical Music have had this innate sensibility -- which collectively eclipses geographical, ideological, and musical boundaries. India Gets Physical is another endeavor by the label to present the next breed of contemporary Indian electronic music and artists, to dance music aficionados across Europe and rest of the world. Going beyond their release commitments, Get Physical Music also proactively aims to explore and discover the Indian scene and extend their support locally. All the Indian artists on this compilation have been brought together by the mysterious Todh Teri (who also happens to be the mastermind behind the mix). An ardent revivalist of Indian cinema's rich disco and cabaret music legacy, Todh Teri's live sets blend these sensibilities with the funk, house, and acid influences of being a Berliner. When asked about India Gets Physical, he says "The artists and music I've put together for this project are predominantly electronic, but with just a pinch of India in it. Clearly steering away from all probable clichés -- all of these tracks sound very international but with just a hint of an Indian tone, scale, or sound." Features Soulspace, Pawas, Arooj Aftab, Unnayanaa, Erika Lernot, Small Town Guy, Adil Smaali, Hamza, Troja, Low Volume, Arnold From Mumbai, Kone Kone, Todh Teri, Murthovic, and MALFNKTION, MadStarBase.

IFRIQIYYA ELECTRIQUE Laylet El Booree LP
LP version. 180 gram vinyl; Includes download code. Fusing the rhythms and invocations of the ancient Saharan Banga ritual with an electrical storm of contemporary sonics, Ifriqiyya Electrique's second album both grips and awakens. In Tunisian, Banga means "huge volume" and one cannot think of a more apt description of Laylet El Booree than that: Maximalist and relentless; Blood, sweat, and trance. Several years ago, two of the musicians who make up the five-piece Ifriqiyya Electrique -- Gianna Greco and François R. Cambuzat -- ventured to the Djerid desert of Tunisia to investigate and confront the religious ritual of the Banga, a ritual of legendary intensity indigenous to the region. The musical duo's background is in the underground post-punk scene of continental Europe, as members of Putan Club and as collaborators with the venerable Lydia Lunch. But they are also voracious travelers and seekers of global sonics that are at least partially hidden from the western gaze. In 2017, Ifriqiyya Electrique released their debut album Rûwâhîne (GB 046CD/LP), an album which deftly brought together the hypnotic chants and metallic hand percussion of traditional Banga music with brutalist electronics and sheer rock volume. Three members of the Banga community -- Tarek Sultan, Yahia Chouchen, and Youssef Ghazala -- joined forces with Gianna and Francois not only on this acclaimed album, but also onstage throughout the eighteen months of touring that followed the record's release. It quickly became clear that the Banga had not been pointlessly retooled for western consumption, but rather through the deep commitment of the five Ifriqiyya Electrique musicians -- it had been transformed into something contemporary and unexpected. Ifriqiyya Electrique cryptically call this transformation a "post-industrial ritual" and the actual experience of hearing this music certainly echoes this moniker. The title of the second album Laylet El Booree translates as the "Night Of The Madness". It refers to the last part of the annual gathering of the adorcist ritual from the Banga of Tozeur -- it is the night when the spirits actually take possession of the bodies. With the band now joined by new member Fatma Chebbi (on vocals and tchektchekas hand percussion) one senses that the musical and cultural conversation is even deeper this time around. In fact, it doesn't feel like a speculative conversation at all, but rather something fully formed and undeniable. An emergent ritual in itself.

LOW LIFE Downer Edn CD
"The whole 'five band years = a lifetime' biz trope is justified, if not negated, by the second album from Sydney's Low Life. Arriving with an aura of anticipation, Downer Edn (read: Edition) feels like a collective document of the band's timeline since their unforgettable debut Dogging -- an album which made enough of a mark on the punk landscape in 2014 to justify a reissue on London's Alter in 2017. Recorded over two years and mixed in 2018 by Mikey Young (Total Control / Eddy Current Suppression Ring), Downer Edn sees the core trio of Mitch Tolman, Cristian O'Sullivan and Greg Alfaro expand their ranks to a five piece. Dizzy Daldal of Oily Boys & Orion was brought in to reinforce the thick wall of guitars, whilst fifth member Yuta Matsumura, also of Oily Boys & Orion, re-joined the group later to free Tolman up as a dedicated front man for live duties. The hours of studio work have resulted in making the band sound more confident and fully realised, reaching for and finding a sound that was perhaps unattainable five years prior. However, lurking behind the bigger vision and polished production is a complex proposition and a dark blast of an album. As far as Australian punk is concerned, this album not only shatters the boundaries, it does so with the lushest attack conceivable. Like their (admitted) influence, the enigmatic Ohio legends of obscurity, V3, seldom has the fuck word been sung (repeatedly) in such a believable and poetic manner. The visceral pounding of melodies throughout the album transforms their inspirations; desperation, neuroses, trauma, survival, hooliganism, violence, hope, rejuvenation, and their hometown of Sydney's full architectural and social scope -- from a realm of intangibility to the very, very tangible."

IVVVO doG 2LP
IVVVO mounts an ambitious debut album for Rabit's Halcyon Veil with doG, a double-LP of synth-driven panoramas painted in neon, riddled with rave tropes and rendered in hyperrealist, cinematic sound design. The follow-up to Good, Bad, Baby, Horny (2017) sees him unpackage and build upon that EP in all directions at once in a viscerally corporeal and sorely emotional salvo intended to be taken as his definitive opus to date. Across its 15 songs the London-based, Portuguese producer spells out a narrative as vividly hypermodern as a Nicolas Winding Refn flick but set in the fashionista underbelly of London, with crucial assistance on two of the album's highlights coming from soundtrack composer and Hollywood Medieval producer Maxwell Sterling. Like a magpie with fancy taste, IVVVO picks the shiniest and most affective elements of contemporary dance/rock/pop and electronica -- from deconstructed trance synths to blockbuster sound design and choral arrangements -- and then weaves them into searing, reactive expressions of modernity. The results are skizzy, veering from anxious to ecstatic and often in the space of one song. Kicking off with convulsive samples of Korn's Jonathan Davis wedged into the nerve-jangling opener "This Is Dog", the album bleeds with emotion at each step, from the heart-bursting Lorenzo Senni-esque style of "Life" to the clenched and knotted grunge reflux of "Forever Your Mouth" to the visceral, Arca-like incision of "Blade", while two pieces with Maxwell Sterling, the Coil-like arabesque "Untitled" and the vertiginous flight of "Last Days", seal the deal with decadent flourishes. Album design and photography by Lane Stewart and Collin Fletcher. Mastered and cut by Helmut Erler at Dubplates & Mastering, Berlin.

CRYPT TRIP Haze County CD
Crypt Trip returns! Following their last album Rootstock (HPS 079CD/LP/LTD-LP, 2018), the Texas rockers are delivering more cosmic American sounds straight to your ears, mind, and soul. Their new album, Haze County, sonically and lyrically explores the complexities of space and time and then brings you back down to the very Earth you're made of. Nine new songs make up the band's most focused and organic effort to date. Mixing elements of hard rock, psychedelic, and rural music, each track is unique and has something different to say. Loud Fender amps and a pounding rhythm section immerse you in an enticing groove on some tracks, while dreamy guitars take you away in others. Staying true to a Texas tradition, the album features a special guest, Geoff Queen, on pedal steel, adding an entirely different color to the tonal palette. Haze County was recorded and mixed by James Campbell at Cibolo Studios in San Antonio, Texas. It was mastered by Jerry Tubb at Terra Nova Digital Audio in Austin, Texas. High quality analog equipment was used at every stage of production for the best possible "vintage" sound. CARETAKER, THE Everywhere At The End Of Time - Stage 6 2LP
The Caretaker dispatches the final scene of a 20 year-long act that has uncannily lurked in the shadows of so many of our listening lives. Clad for the last time in Ivan Seal's specially commissioned artwork, this final stage sees The Caretaker mirroring the ultimate descent into dementia and oblivion, again using a patented prism of sound to connote a final, irreversible transition into the haunted ballroom of the mind that he first stepped into in 1999. The project really took on new dimensions in 2005 with the 72-track, six-CD boxset Theoretically Pure Anterograde Amnesia, which was accompanied by an insightful unpackaging of its ideas by cultural critic Mark Fisher, aka K-Punk; a stalwart of the project who identified it (alongside music from Burial and Broadcast) among the most vital, emergent works of hauntological art -- a form of music often preoccupied with ideas about memory and nostalgia (but one distinct from pastiche), and the way that they possibly overwhelm, occlude, or even define our sense of being. By using fusty samples from an obsolete analog format, and by doing so in the second decade of the second millennium, The Caretaker perfectly and perversely bent ideas of anticipation/expectation with his arrangements, playing with notions of convention and repetition. The project crystallized as a real gesamtkunstwerk for these times, and one arguably defined by a stubborn and intractably chronic drive against the grain of modern popular culture, or even a refusal of it. And so to the project's final goodbye. With the outside world muted, and only the timbral residue remaining like smoke, everything moves as slow as a Lynchian dream sequence, until a conclusion so ineffably sublime occurs that can't be mentioned for fear of it waking up. With his departure, you'll just take respite in the fact that The Caretaker was always there, inverting the world and supplying space and time and theory for thought, prompting you to dwell on the realest and darkest matters via the prism of the surreal and the unreal in a way that, in the long-run, can prove to be more effective at grasping the immediate state of cultural amnesia and the world's increasingly tight feedback loops, and arguably bring us to the realization that it's all a hyper-complex mess beyond anyone's conception, but we must at least attempt to try and understand, no matter how futile it seems. CARETAKER, THE Everywhere At The End Of Time Stages 4-6 4CD
Compiling the last three albums in the Everywhere At The End Of Time series -- four CDs and almost five hours of material cataloging the ultimate descent into dementia and oblivion, using a patented prism of sound to connote a final, irreversible transition into the haunted ballroom of the mind that he first stepped into with 1999's Selected Memories From the Haunted Ballroom. Invoking Jack Nicolson's caretaker character in Stanley Kubrick/Stephen King's The Shining as metaphor for issues revolving around mental health and a growing dissociation/dissatisfaction with the world, the project really took on new dimensions in 2005 with the 72-track, six-CD boxset Theoretically Pure Anterograde Amnesia, which was accompanied by an insightful unpacking of its ideas by cultural critic Mark Fisher, aka K-Punk; a stalwart of the project who identified it (alongside music from Burial and Broadcast) among the most vital, emergent works of hauntological art -- a form of music often preoccupied with ideas about memory and nostalgia (but one distinct from pastiche), and the way that they possibly overwhelm, occlude, or even define our sense of being; ideas that resonate with Fisher's own assertion that capitalism essentially undermines collective thought, distorts the individual, and has tragically lead to a worldwide increase or even ubiquity of mental health-related issues. By using fusty samples from an obsolete analog format, and by doing so in the second decade of the second millennium, The Caretaker perfectly and perversely bent ideas of anticipation/expectation with his arrangements, playing with notions of convention and repetition with effect that would lead some listeners to wonder if the same record was being released over and again. When combined with Ivan Seal's bespoke painting for each release from 2011's An Empty Bliss Beyond This World onwards, the project crystallized as a real gesamtkunstwerk for these times, and one arguably defined by a stubborn and intractably chronic drive against the grain of modern popular culture, or even a refusal of it.

PETAL, BUD Fabric Cordial CD
2014 release. Bud Petal is the stage name of musician Eran Asoulin. His music has been described as 'cerebral art-folk' & 'the music Lord Byron would be making had he lived in the 21st century'. Bud is a true outsider, a freak-folk wunderkind who has been compared to Syd Barret and Daniel Johnston. But don't for a minute think him primitive or naive - Bud is worldly beyond his years and holds a PhD in both linguistics and philosophy. He was 'discovered' when his self-produced first album was pulled from the trash at a local radio station. A self-taught musician from The Levant, he spent his teenage years immersed in the bohemian/DIY art scene of Newtown, Sydney. His music collides Mediterranean '70s/'80s folk pop (Lucio Battisti, Nada Malanima, Aviv Geffen), the Middle Eastern/Arabic music of his childhood (Marcel Khalife, Oum Khaltoum), and from the west: early Joan Baez and elements of free jazz. Once you come to terms with his voice - a glorious, effortful glissading din with stuttering vibrato - lyrically you'll find an oddly surreal, socialist-utopian world with strands of Emile Zola, A. B. Yehoshua, Yaakov Shavtai, Andre Breton, Noam Chomsky, Howard Zinn, and Stephen J. Gould. The making of Fabric Cordial was a two-year adventure, written in small German towns, cities of The Levant & the inner west of Sydney. It sees Bud Petal create an idiosyncratic world of sounds and stories. Folk songs dressed in screeching sax, freeform guitars, makeshift choirs, droning e-bows & Bud's ever-strained but mesmerizing voice. Deluxe CD and booklet; limited edition.

BATT-RAWDEN + CHRIS MANSELL, ANDREW Seven Stations (In Any Order) CD/BOOK
2014 release. Andrew Batt-Rawden is a Sydney-based composer, performer, and publisher. His practice is cross-platform and all-embracing. Though initially stemming from an almost traditional sense of 'the composer', Andrew fuses elements of gesture, choreography, new technology, text, performance art, and mixed-media into his work and has a wide-ranging history of inter-disciplinary collaboration. His current focus is on incorporating all the senses into the audience experience by integrating data feeds to affect live electroacoustic performance, particularly with the use of heartbeat and movement data and by building algorithmic software that works with both light and sound; a collision of chamber/art music and technology. Chris Mansell has been called 'a significant voice in Australian poetry'. She began as an editor and poet in the '70s and since then has chosen to live an isolated rural life. She is the recipient of multiple awards for her work and continues to publish with regularity. Her writing has been described as 'stylistically and thematically groundbreaking'. One emerges from the experience of reading it disturbed and challenged. Its haunting rhythms do not easily let go. Seven Stations (In Any Order) is a collaboration between a young composer and a multi-award winning poet, combining elements of contemporary chamber music, electric instruments, electronics, and voice with a vivid text. It is a cheerfully profane song-cycle, using the railway stations of the city's center as the focus of its imagery. Deluxe CD and booklet; limited edition."Like every city, the soundscape is a constant hum of people, traffic lights, cars, buses, birds. Depending on where you are, you also hear water, trains, music. Depending on when you are, your ears pick up the scurry of rats and possums, the asymmetrical rhythm of drunken steps in cloppy heels punctuated by profane outbursts, laughter, and conversation in many languages. Some people open their mouths and the sound of bank notes flap with their tongues. Others speak with a smile full of shark teeth, ever-ready to take a nip. The lucidity of the dream that created the structures holding this city together - something beautiful yet strange." --Andrew Batt-Rawden

CYCLE~ 440 The Topography of Ascending Frameworks CD
2015 release. Cycle~ 440 are the London-via-Perth duo of Sam Gillies and Kevin Penkin. Their semi-improvisational electro-acoustic explorations fuse Kevin's brooding acoustic piano with Sam's fractured laptop sampling and processing to create soundscapes of alternately extreme fragility and overwhelming density. Both Penkin and Gillies are former students of Australian sound artist, composer and graphic score exponent Cat Hope. The Topography of Ascending Frameworks marks the final installment of the Constructions Trilogy; a longform conceptual recording project that explored a large scale idea-based framework to guide improvised composition. The trilogy began in 2011 with The Geography of Collapsing Structures, a study of deconstructive forces as applied to composition. In 2012, Cycle~ 440 recorded The Cartography Of Shifting Planes, an exploration of the musical potential of the line and of constant variation through minimal gestures. Finally, 2015's The Topography Of Ascending Frameworks explores the power of growth, utilizing musical structures characterized by excessive development and departure. The Topography of Ascending Frameworks boasts a strikingly scientific title, but it is by no means a cold or clinical listen. It ticks forward with quiet, sanguine momentum, bubbles under its still surface, surges with warped strands of noise pitted against contemplative piano chords and seethes with ominous drones and unsettling oscillations. Every moment exudes a unique blend of granular detail and zoomed-out expansiveness. Cycle~ 440 are winners of the 2013 WAM Experimental Song of the Year award for "So We Beat On, Boats Against The Current". Deluxe CD; limited edition.

MERZBOW Kookaburra CD
2013 release. "There is no argument; Merzbow stands as the most important artist in noise music. The moniker of Japanese artist Masami Akita has appeared on over four hundred albums since 1979. The name comes from German artist Kurt Schwitters' famous work Merzbau, in which he transformed the interior of his house with found objects. This is reflected in Akita's junk art / collage aesthetic. Other influences on the Merzbow philosophy range from ritualized eroticism (fetishism and bondage), surrealism to extreme metal and animal rights. Since the early 2000s Akita has been a vegan and dedicated animal rights activist. Many of his releases are dedicated to or about particular animals. Kookaburra documents a rare live appearance of Merzbow down-under, capturing his solo performance in Sydney, Australia, May 2012. Following a slew of archival boxset releases and a relative scarcity in new recordings, Kookaburra comes at an opportune time to showcase the current solo Merzbow live sound. Leaving aside the more melodic and ambient touches heard on recent studio albums, Kookaburra cuts straight to the chase with 60 minutes of blissfully dense noise, brimming with endless detail. Differing from previous Merzbow live albums, the trademark loops are now buried deep within a monolithic torrent of black noise, characterized by both analog and digital flavors. The world of Kookaburra is built upon impenetrably thick walls of low-end oomph and filled with relentlessly caustic textures from which distorted howls, wild oscillations and inexorable pulsations rear their monstrous heads. This monolithic single track is remarkable for its incredibly hypnotic journey along an enormous arc of sonic strata that is both glacial in its pacing and molten in its unyielding force. This is Merzbow at his most elemental and Kookaburra boldly displays the king of noise's most focused exploration of stunningly powerful noise in recent years." --Alex Pozniak Deluxe CD; limited edition.

MERZBOW & OREN AMBARCHI Cat's Squirrel CD
2013 release. "Cat's Squirrel is a live recording of Masami Akita and Oren Ambarchi's performance in Sydney, Australia in May 2012. Although Akita and Ambarchi have known one another since 1993 and performed together as part of larger ensembles, this was their first performance as a duo. Together they create a massive wall of sound that moves from the cavernous to the blisteringly psychedelic, laying down shifting low-end structures over which pointillist details ricochet across the stereo field. Akita and Ambarchi's voices blend together into a sonic morass. Moving through a number of episodes, from deluges of reverberated metal screeches to rapid-fire iterations of visceral electronic tones, the record reaches a high point midway through the second side, where Akita's electronics gradually thin out into a stream of skipping chirps and screeches while around him Ambarchi builds up a dense mass of phasing low-end guitar tones; the duo patiently developing an impenetrable wall of ecstatic, psychedelic noise." --Francis Plagne Deluxe CD; limited edition.

KANGA, ZUBIN Not Music Yet (by David Young) CD
2014 release. Zubin Kanga is a modern-day David Tudor; he is at the forefront of 21st century avant-garde piano music, not only as a performer but also as a prolific commissioner of new works. Zubin has collaborated with many of the world's leading composers including Steve Reich, Beat Furrer, Thomas Ades, and Michael Finnissy. His teacher and mentor Rolf Hind was a pianist signed to the infamous Factory Records (Joy Division, Cabaret Voltaire) who instilled a borderless view of 'classical' music in him. Zubin has performed for the BBC Proms, as well as with the Bang-on-a-Can Allstars, Eighth Blackbird, and Ensemble Plus-Minus. Zubin's more recent concerts have aimed to extend the possibilities of the pianist, incorporating mixed-media and extended techniques as well as exploring the interaction between gesture and technology. Zubin is fitted with motion sensors which track his movement and give him direct sound-shaping control. This all plays out with him transplanted into films, virtually multiplied and layered, drowned in electronics and climbing on and in the piano in a La Monte Young/Fluxus salute. It could be said that he has aligned himself with the '"New Discipline" - a European scene defined by composer Jennifer Walsh which assimilates theatrics, absurdism, video art, the Internet and pop culture - although he still most definitely fly's the flag for pure contemporary classical music. Zubin is currently a post-doctoral researcher in Paris at one of the world's leading music technology research institutes - as well as Research Fellow of the Royal Academy of Music, where his research on new approaches to performer-technology interactions is published widely. The heyday of the graphic score was the 1960s; composers like Bussotti and Cardew picked up on the ideas first put forward by pioneers like Feldman and Brown, developing non-conventional music notation into elaborate and artistic scores. Not Music Yet for solo piano is a watercolor graphic score by Berlin-based Australian composer, David Young. Composed for Kanga, the performer is to consider it a time-space score (pitch read on the vertical axis and time on the horizontal). They should make three equal passes, reading left to right, playing only the black parts of the painting first, followed by white then blue. The work can be performed in either seven or 42 minute versions. Young recommends the use of a stopwatch to aid exact timing. Further, every attempt should be made to realize the graphics' contours and shapes as carefully and precisely as possible. Recorded with incredible detail on a 102-key Stuart and Sons piano. Deluxe CD and booklet with score image; limited edition.

DJEUHDJOAH & LIEUTENANT NICHOLSON Aimez Ces Airs CD
The French-Afropean duo is back with a new funky masterpiece album, Aimez Ces Airs. DjeuhDjoah & Lieutenant Nicholson are French composers and Afro-soul singers. The duo is creating a new vibe with French sounds and mixing it with jazz, Afrobeat, electronic, and soul. T'es Qui? (HC 034CD, 2015) was their first album released in 2015 and re-released a year later under the name Remets T'es Qui? (HC 044CD/LP, 2016). It was result of an intense collaboration that has lasted many years, on stage and in the studio. They call their music "Afropean songs", a collection of jazzy-pop melodies, Afro-soul, and funk arrangements. This album has 15 songs and features a tribute to the famous poet Aimé Césaire on the title. The Antilles are also honored with creole lyrics, and if you listen carefully -- you'll hear them distilled within the album. La Montagne Pelée's eruption in 1902 is evoked under the prism of August Cyparis, one of the three survivors. The rhythms are tight and focused, with some Antilles, but also Detroit elements thrown in, accompanied with a strong horns section, vibraphone, and analog drums. There are lots of echoes from the era of jazz funk and the lyrical French mode, mixed with some slightly warmer currents that show their wider love of modern funk and eclectic tastes. It is a unique sound, an original recipe, using French wordplay with a universal message. In the summer of 2018, they presented the now critically acclaimed first single "El Nino" (HC 057EP), an Afro-funk gem about climate change, and "Fontaine", an Afro hit with a great combination of analog take and electronic dancefloor ingredients. With massive support from national radios and prestigious international DJs such as Gilles Peterson, Aimez Ces Airs could be one of the top funky albums of 2019. Cover designed by the artist Felix. Mastered by DJ Vas.

RADIGUE, ELIANE Triptych CD
2019 restock. Originally released in 2009. "Back to music after three years of silence... On the suggestion of Robert Ashley, Douglas Dunn commissioned this piece from Éliane Radigue for choreography. Only the first part of Triptych was staged at the premiere at the Dancehall/Theatre of Nancy on February 27 1978. Recorded in the composer's studio in Paris. After the premiere of Adnos I (IMPREC 028CD) in San Francisco in 1974, a group of French students introduced Éliane Radigue to Tibetan Buddhism. When she returned to Paris, she began to explore this spirituality in depth, which slowed her musical production up until 1978. Triptych marks her return to composition, and draws its inspiration from 'the spirit of the fundamental elements,' water, air, fire, earth... Éliane Radigue likes to add that this has often been useful to her in her moments of research and transitions. This three-part composition, with its great humility and contemplative simplicity, heralded a new period of work and was the first in a series of masterpieces inspired by Tibetan Buddhism: Adnos II (1980); Adnos III (1981) [both included on IMPREC 028CD]; Songs of Milarepa (1983), with the voices of Lama Kunga Rinpoche and Robert Ashley; Jetsun Mila (1986); as well as the Triologie de la Mort (XI 119CD): Kyema (1988), Kailasha (1991), and Koumé (1993). Archival images included in the accompanying booklet." --Manu Holterbach

CLEVELAND, CARRIE Looking Up: The Complete Works LP + 7"

Here, The label offers an expanded version of her 1978 album Looking Up, including both the issue and promotional versions of her single "Make Love To Me", and the previously unknown sweet soul single "I've Got A Feeling". Privately arranged, recorded, and produced by Carrie and her husband Bill as a labor of love in their backyard studio in 1978, Looking Up is one of the most in-demand soul/disco LPs in existence, sought-after in particular for their track "Love Will Set You Free". In addition, the promotional version of Carrie's single "Make Love To Me" is one of the best and rarest sweet soul records to have emerged out of the West Coast soul scene, and her single "I've Got A Feeling" is until today virtually unknown even to the most seasoned of collectors, with even Carrie herself unsure if it was ever released. With the album originally pressed in a limited run of just 1000, with 500 copies of each single, original copies of Carrie's records deservingly command eye-watering figures on the second-hand market. Kalita Records now satisfy the thirst with the first ever official reissue of her entire discography. Includes extensive interview-based liner notes and never before seen photos, detailing Carrie and Bills' life and musical career. LP version consists of both the expanded album and a bonus 7" single; housed in a gatefold sleeve.

Beside showcasing his own music, Jörg Burger kept to inviting a close circle of friends and colleagues that share similar influences in their work. All of their contributions were specially composed or remixed for this collection. Velvet Desert Music Vol. 1 features the first new Burger/Ink track since the release of their iconic full length Las Vegas on Harvest and Matador Records in 1996. Also features The Novotones, Cologne Tape, Kenneth James Gibson. CD version includes tracks by Jörg Burger, Metope, and Paul Mac."Just think... from Sergio Leone to David Lynch, from Elvis in his deepest moments to Johnny Cash somewhere between amphetamine backlash and American Recordings, from 'Hollywood Babylon' to 'Hotel California', from Mulholland Drive to Paris, Texas. BANANARAMA Deep Sea Skiving CD
Bananarama burst onto the pop scene in 1983 with their debut album Deep Sea Skiving. With a DIY punk attitude and bags of charm the band soon became a mainstay of TOTPs, Smash Hits, the NME and The Face. Deep Sea Skiving contains the first of their string of immaculate, self-penned, ramshackle, charmingly naive pop gemstones. The album includes five hit singles: "Shy Boy", "Really Saying Something", "Cheers Then", "Aie A Mwana", and "Na Na Hey Hey (Kiss Him Goodbye)." Bananarama are often cited as the UK's most successful ever girl group with five UK singles and ten top tens. They were the girl group that defined the '80s with their run of pop hits which soundtracked the lives of fans around the world. The news of Bananarama's reunion, after nearly 30 years, was met with universal approval and saw the band celebrated all over again. In 2017 the trio reassembled for a UK tour in a pop reunion only dreamt of in the wildest imaginations by many quarters. The band reunited in their original line up for the first time in years. For many, Siobhan stepping back into her natural habitat once again is pop's very own version of Morrissey and Marr re-uniting. Includes eight-page booklet.

MINOGUE, DANNII Neon Nights 2CD
Originally released in 2003, Dannii Minogue and London Records re-release Neon Nights to celebrate its 15th year anniversary of its release. A veritable pick and mix of the European dance scene at the time, Neon Nights spawned four Top 10 hit singles in the UK "Who Do You Love Now?" (No.3), "Put The Needle On It" (No.7), "I Begin To Wonder" (No.2), and "Don't Wanna Lose This Feeling" (No.5). The album reached No.8 on the UK Official Albums Chart and was certified gold. In Australia it was nominated for "Best Pop Release" at the 2003 ARIA Music Awards. Dannii says: "When I embarked on a solo recording career and released my first album in 1990, music was only released on 7" and 12" vinyl. Fast forward through my album releases and throw in a bunch of technology changes; cassingles, cassette albums, CDs, Mini CDs and we are finally back to vinyl! Neon Nights never had a vinyl release -- it was the '90s, and the industry was entering the digital age, and no-one was looking back at this experience of music listening. Thankfully Gen Y has embraced the nostalgia of the record player, so you finally get to put the needle on it with these tracks (please turn the volume up loud enough to annoy your neighbors!)" includes bonus tracks and remixes by Tiga, Jason Nevins, and Almighty. "Right here, right now Asian Dub Foundation are the most important band in Britain."--NME, 1997London Records present a reissue of Asian Dub Foundation's Rafi's Revenge, originally released in 1998. Rafi's Revenge originally peaked at number 20 on the UK Albums Chart and was shortlisted for the 1998 Mercury Music Prize, with Bobby Gillespie hailing them at the time as "the best live act in Britain". By the time they recorded Rafi's Revenge in 1998, Asian Dub Foundation were primed to explode. Having initially emerged from East London's grassroots Community Music project as a largely studio-based collective, the band had galvanized themselves into a riotously exciting touring machine by the late '90s. Their extraordinary live shows around this period were electrifying to witness, kinetic and dynamic, incendiary, and euphoric, confrontational yet celebratory. For sheer roof-raising energy, they were unrivalled. ADF have evolved enormously over the last two decades, of course, but their breakthrough album remains a fascinating chapter in the real, complex, unwritten history of Britpop. ASHLEY, ROBERT Private Parts LP
Repressed; Lovely Music presents a reissue of Robert Ashley's Private Parts, originally issued in 1978. This newly mastered LP release is a must-have for aficionados as well as a perfect introductory work to Ashley's oeuvre. Among Lovely Music's first six releases, it came to be known as "the yellow record". No one had ever heard anything like it; Ashley presented an unvarnished exposition of the inner workings of a man's mind. And on the other side, those of a woman. These two episodes were the foundation for Ashley's seven-part opera, Perfect Lives (LCD 4917CD, 2017), which was performed by his ensemble throughout the 1980s and was completed for television broadcast by Britain's Channel Four. New arrangements of Perfect Lives, notably Varispeed's site-specific version, continue to intrigue and enchant. Recorded at the Center for Contemporary Music, Mills College, Oakland, California, July 1977, produced by Ashley. Personnel: Robert Ashley - voice; "Blue" Gene Tyranny - keyboards; Kris - tablas. 180 gram vinyl, Stoughton Old Style sleeve, includes libretto.

Repressed. 180-gram LP version with embossed chessboard artwork print and printed inner sleeve. In celebration of the 2016 35th anniversary of the December 12, 1981, recording of Manuel Göttsching's legendary E2-E4, one of electronic music's most influential recordings, Göttsching's MG.ART label presents an official reissue, carefully overseen by the master himself. Includes liner notes by Manuel Göttsching, archival photos, and an excerpt of David Elliott's review in Sounds from June 16, 1984."As the story is sometimes told, Göttsching stopped in the studio for a couple of hours in 1981 and invented techno. E2-E4 is the most compelling argument that techno came from Germany-- more so than any single Kraftwerk album, anyway. The sleeve credits the former Ash Ra Tempel leader with 'guitar and electronics', but few could stretch that meager toolkit like Göttsching. Over a heavenly two-chord synth vamp and simple sequenced drum and bass, Göttsching's played his guitar like a percussion instrument, creating music that defines the word 'hypnotic' over the sixty minutes . . . A key piece in the electronic music puzzle that's been name-checked, reworked and expanded upon countless times." --Mark Richardson, Pitchfork

BRUBECK, DAVE NDR 60 Years Jazz Edition No02 3LP
"Back to the Hanover college ... While Brubeck challenged the producers for the program of the Time Out LP a year later with a lot of his own compositions, at the end of February 1958 he only included two of his own works among a lot of Jazz material from the 'American Songbook', without resorting populistically to the eternal hits and evergreens of the time. Recognizing 'Gone With The Wind' at the start of the concert shows just how knowledgeable the audience is. The Brubeck original 'One Moment Worth Years' is followed by 'Someday My Prince Will Come', a hit from the popular Snow White film by Walt Disney (whom Brubeck greatly admired, as evidenced by the LP program Dave Digs Disney), but above all the pianist can celebrate the mix of rhythms here which dominates the rest of the evening. Then the bassist Eugene Wright takes center stage: some standards follow: 'For All We Know' and Ellington's 'Take the A-Train', received with enthusiastic applause and introduced by Brubeck's own Ellington homage 'The Duke'; then 'Out Of Nowhere'. We can still be astounded by the clarity of the recording, making the dialogue between Desmond and Brubeck sound as if it was recorded today; and although countless technical advances have been made to improve the quality in the more than half a century since these recording - an outstanding live recording from then, overseen by the radio technicians from NDR, can still distinguish itself with flying colors."

JAIKISHAN, SHANKAR Raga Jazz Style LP
Never before reissued, this legendary 1968 EMI recording is a revered Indian jazz rarity; a collectors' holy grail. Raga Jazz Style is an original Indian excursion into Indo-jazz fusion. A one-away recording from the almost unknown Bombay jazz scene, it is among the few jazz LPs to hail from the subcontinent. Closely contemporary with the UK-based explorations of Amancio D'Silva, John Mayer, and Joe Harriott, Raga Jazz Style takes the melodic, scale-based raga system of Indian classical music and marries it with a swinging jazz rhythm section assembled by Bollywood's most highly acclaimed musical directors, the soundtrack composing duo Shankar Singh and Jaikishan Panchal. Singh and Panchal were a dominant force in Hindi film music from the late 1940s onwards. Shankar had been trained in classical tabla, while Jaikishan was an expert harmonium player. They worked together on well over a hundred films, and their innovative compositions and orchestral scoring revolutionized the music of the nascent Bollywood industry. Central to their sound was regular collaborator Sebastian D'Souza. Originally from Goa, D'Souza had cut his teeth in the dance-band era, arranging and playing with his uncle's jazz bands in Lahore and Quetta. After Partition, he had moved to Bombay to follow the reliable work provided by the film industry, where Goan musicians had become the mainstay of Bollywood's film studio orchestras. Goans were also the core of Bombay's thriving dance-hall and hotel-based jazz scene, with artists including saxophonist Braz Gonsalves, guitarist Amancio D'Silva and trumpeter Chic Chocolate all working in the city during the post-war years. The team assembled for Raga Jazz Style were drawn from this inventive and forward-thinking milieu. Pianist Lucilla Pacheco, saxophonist Manohari Singh, and guitarist Anibal Castro were all fixtures on the Bombay jazz circuit, while drummer Leslie Godinho is reputed to have taught Joe Morello the 5/4 "Take Five" beat when they jammed together during Dave Brubeck's State Department tour of India. To this jazz backbone was added the sitar of Ustad Rais Khan, scion of long line of classical instrumentalists, and nephew of the renowned sitarist Ustad Vilayat Khan. Bombay's jazz modernists had been experimenting with the fusion of ragas and jazz since the 1950s, long before American or British jazz musicians had tuned in to Indian classical music. But very little of this exciting scene was ever captured on record. Reissued using the original masters. Facsimile artwork; 180 gram vinyl pressed at Pallas, in Germany.

SHARPS QUINTET & P.A.P.A., JESSE Sharps And Flats 2LP
Issued on vinyl for the first time, Outernational Sounds presents a monumental spirit music document from the Los Angeles underground -- Jesse Sharp's slept-on deep jazz classic Sharps And Flats. "He became the Ark leader -- he was hardcore. They'd all be quiet and listen to him when he talked" --Horace Tapscott, on Jesse Sharps. You could be forgiven for not knowing how important saxophonist, bandleader, and composer Jesse Sharps is. After all, the only album to come out under his name, Sharps And Flats, was recorded in 1985, and wasn't issued on CD until 2004. But despite this seemingly small recorded footprint, Jesse Sharps is a major figure in the history of jazz music in Los Angeles. As the bandleader for Horace Tapscott's Pan-Afrikan People's Arkestra (P.A.P.A.) -- the Marshall Allen to Tapscott's Sun Ra -- he led Tapscott's seminal music community through its most cohesive phase. And, after a hiatus living in Europe, his return to Los Angeles in the 2000s saw him build a new group, The Gathering, which linked original heads including acclaimed singer Dwight Trible and legendary trombonist Phil Ranelin with a new generation of LA jazz voices, including none other than Kamasi Washington. Sharps has been around, and he's made an indelible mark. At college, Sharps studied under Cecil Taylor. When he came back to LA he rejoined the Arkestra on flute and reeds, and eventually took over band-leading duties from the great altoist Arthur Blythe. Trusted completely by Tapscott, as bandleader Sharps turned the Arkestra into a well-drilled unit. This was the time of the classic P.A.P.A. recordings, 1978's Flight 17 (OTR 010LP), Live at I.U.C.C. (1979), and The Call (1978), and Sharps also wrote for the band. The funky, deep spirituality of compositions like "Desert Fairy Princess", "Macramé", and "Peyote Song III" has made his tunes among most celebrated in the whole P.A.P.A. catalog. Sharps And Flats was recorded in 1985 for Tom Albach's legendary Nimbus West imprint, a label Albach had founded specifically to document the work of Horace Tapscott and his circle. Featuring a quintet of P.A.P.A. regulars at the height of their game, Sharps And Flats is one of the great lost Nimbus sessions -- it lay unissued until 2004, and never saw a vinyl press. A lost classic of the LA underground, on wax at last!

CREATIVE ARTS ENSEMBLE One Step Out 2LP
Outernational Sounds presents a Nimbus West spirit jazz essential: the Creative Arts Ensemble's classic debut One Step Out. This release features all tracks at full length for the first time on wax. One of the most sought after and highly-regarded titles to have appeared on Tom Albach's celebrated Nimbus West imprint, One Step Out is a timeless work of spiritualized jazz. A true gem from the Los Angeles jazz underground, the album was pianist and composer Kaeef Ruzadun Ali's first recording as leader of the Creative Arts Ensemble, the only large ensemble group that emerged directly from Horace Tapscott's legendary Pan Afrikan Peoples Arkestra community jazz group. A Los Angeles native, Kaeef was introduced to the Tapscott circle in the late 1970s. His first experience of the Arkestra's ethos was through PAPA tenorist Michael Session, who took him to the famous "Great House" at 2412 South Western Ave., LA -- a large mansion house which members of the Arkestra had taken over as a space for communal living. Life in the Great House was a continuous stream of music, dance and community events. "When I walked in there," recalled Kaeef, "it was like this whole rush came over me, just from going in the front door -- It was like a very, very warm feeling of love. I went and I came out with 'Flashback Of Time', and that was my first arrangement." Kaeef quickly became a significant contributor of compositions to the Arkestra's songbook -- his piece "New Horizon" would be recorded by Horace Tapscott for the latter's Tapscott Sessions series. But "Flashback Of Time" would eventually appear on One Step Out, played by the new group he had put together from stalwart Arkestra members. Inspired by both Tapscott's example and by the Art Ensemble of Chicago, Kaeef had wanted to follow their lead by assembling a larger unit. Featuring seasoned Arkestra regulars including reedsman Dadisi Komolafe, drummer Woody "Sonship" Theus and altoist Gary Bias, with veterans Henry "The Skipper" Franklin on bass and George Bohannon on trombone, One Step Out is a key document of the Los Angeles radical jazz underground. Featuring the sanctified vocals of Kaeef's sister, B. J. Crowley, the album is a tour de force of spiritually energized independent jazz music. On vinyl for the first time since 1981. 180 gram vinyl, mastered at 45rpm for enhanced sound; Fully licensed from Tom Albach.

DJ KOZE Pick Up 12"
2019 repress. DJ Koze presents the second single from his album Knock Knock. "Pick Up" is 100% pure groove, doubly so in the extended 12" version. Flipping samples of Gladys Knight & the Pips "Neither One Of Us (Wants to Be the First to Say Goodbye)" and Melba Moore's "Pick Me Up, I'll Dance", it creates something completely airborne. B-side "The Love Truck" recalls 2000s minimal techno, but this time absolutely nothing is generic.

VA Mixed Up Minds Part Fourteen: Obscure Rock & Pop from the British Isles 1970-1975 CD
Mixed Up Minds Part Fourteen offers another tantalizing dose of forgotten dreams from the suburban drifts of Britain. In the aftermath of psychedelia, and in a less flamboyant 1970s, fading stars continued to shine as brightly, but to much less acclaim. Amidst the glam rock and progressive bourgeoisie, pop songs knew their place, but for every T-Rex, 10cc, Bowie, and Queen, there was other more unlucky and less commercial artists that sat in the underbelly of pomp and hysteria. Part Fourteen collects together another 20 ripping yarns that were cruelly denied their crown first time round, all recorded between 1970-1975. Features The Searchers, Peter Noone, Vaughan Thomas, Billy Nicholls, Driftwood, A & A North, Brian Protheroe, Gerry Morris, Rick Price, Pete Dello, Trader Horne, Valerie Savage, Stavely Makepeace, Paul Ryan, Fresh Air, The Fortunes, M. Pummeling blasts and d-beats pound into orbiting shadows of pixelated black, beneath a pulverizing dense nihilistic bass distorted into a mournful funeral offering. LARIVIERE, REGIS RENOUARD Contree LP
"Allégeance Volatile" and "Esquive" each tackle the same issue in their own way. Overcoming time: whether it be successive, additional, enumerative, or repetitive. However, there is nothing here about the ensuing nature of so-called "repetitive" music. These are types of high-end music. And it is more about insistence, the obstinacy of an individual who keeps knocking on a door that will never open. The rustic drumming of "Allégeance", talkative, acidulous, colorful, and over-articulated, with almost clownish desinences, eventually dies out in this very respite. The iterative and puffy shimmering of "Esquive" with its dull, thin and precise sounds, shifts and is engulfed into another sonic world -- which appears as a gaping and collapsed response to this prime insistency. This is, indeed, a "volatile allegiance" and "avoidance" from the sonic to the musical elements: the musical phenomenon anticipated and pursued as the non-sound of sound -- or, in other words, the void of sound. This seems to be the lesson of the concrete attitude in music. Such is the kind of questioning that stirs the composer. He returns with another title: "Contrée", which, once again, speaks of a counter-event. Here, the movement is broader, more generous, more confident. Time spreads and stretches out. What seems to be a landscape of entanglements, trajectories, influx, masses, and points emerges. "Something" rises and presents itself out of the sounds -- these escaping beings, these "relatively short combustion flames" (Schaeffer). The piece consists of five consecutive and uninterrupted parts: "Entrée" and "Stance I" -- "Véhémence De L'air" and "Stance II" -- "Grande Allure". It is the central section of an electroacoustic triptych with Sables (2011) as the first and Nil (2017) as the last. "Contrée" is dedicated to Philippe Mion, whose friendly ears have been entrusted with my music for so many years. Translations by Valérie Vivancos. WEDDING PRESENT, THE Live 2017 [Part 2] CD+DVD
In 2017, The Wedding Present played a series of concert dates to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the release of their classic debut album, George Best. With its bittersweet, breathtakingly honest love songs immersed in whirlwind guitars, George Best struck a chord with outsiders across the indie universe. The album has achieved legendary status in the hearts and minds of alternative music fans everywhere. The final concert in the 30th anniversary series took place at the O2 Academy in Leeds on December 9, 2017. This was, of course, hugely appropriate because Leeds was the city where The Wedding Present were born and where George Best was written, arranged, rehearsed, and partly recorded. Appreciating the significance of the event, David Gedge decided that this Leeds show would be the last time that The Wedding Present would play George Best live... ever! RAGNAROK Ragnarok LP
Silence present a vinyl reissue of Ragnarök's self-titled debut album, originally released on the same label in 1976. Some music never becomes dated and this debut record by Ragnarök from Kalmar in Sweden is just filled with that kind of music. Many listeners have tried to describe the music they have carried in their hearts throughout a whole life or just discovered. They all say it does not sound like anything else they have heard, some say it sounds like looking at water, others that is sounds like morning dew or a rippling brook and that it gives a calming joyful feeling. Some hold it as a jewel, a romantic diamond, a treasure that only they have discovered. The lingering melodies are built around a minor key with guitars in harmony, flute, electric piano, bass and drums. There is something unrelieved, a feeling of expectations where you can be at rest. Since 1976 this music has had faithful listeners but has also found its way to new listeners in all of Europe as well as Japan, South Korea, New Zeeland, Venezuela, Australia. Silence always get questions from all over as to where to buy it -- so here it is. Original sound engineer Anders Lind has put his sensitive hands on this remastered version. Today, there are six groups named Ragnarök, but this Swedish Ragnarök was the first and has little or nothing in common with the others. Time to reclaim the name.

SMALLPEOPLE Afterglow CD
Smallpeople's debut album, Salty Days (SMALL 005CD/LP), was released in 2012. In the time since, much has changed in the world of dance music. have remained dedicated to their unapologetically reassuring vision of house music as-a-whole. Smallpeople, as well as expanding their Smallville Records shop in Hamburg's St. Pauli, has continued to act on their direct-line to the beating heart of house music at some of the world's finest clubs, including their monthly residency at Hamburg's legendary Golden Pudel. Of course, all these maneuvers sit alongside their work running Smallville Records, and its sub-label, Fuck Reality. Given Julius Steinhoff and Dionne's stewardship in filtering the crème de la crème of house music from the underground and into clubs across Europe and further afield, it would be particularly cliched on this occasion to stress that their second record is "eagerly awaited". In their own way, they have already given us enough great records. But with Afterglow, there's another great record, and more importantly, one carved directly from the hearts and record collections of two individuals whose understanding of dance music appears to be some sort of blissful second-nature. This sort of earned assuredness is immediately established on opening track "Magic Interference", a rolling, deep, and somewhat jazzy house number with tumbling keys and sky-walkin' chords. This steady, blissful vibe sets the tone for the first half of the record, as the pair patiently unfold their touchstones; equal parts Chicago ("Hearts at Whole"), Detroit ("All States of Dawn"), and Hamburg, famed for it's transatlantic routes via groundbreaking clubs such as Front, it's a crystalline distillation of a sound that's earnest, but never nostalgic. Intuitive selectors as they are, Smallpeople pick the ideal moment to up the pace for the home-run, defined here by the spiky, disco bassline of "Beyond", an unexpected ingredient that Steinhoff and Dionne nevertheless manage to diffuse into space dust. It's a brilliant wrong footing before the wide-eyed, warm-hearted anthem-in-waiting, "Sonic Winds", a wonderfully cheeky glimpse of Smallpeople as peak time heroes, before the acid-flecked shuffle of "Benevolent Reciever" reveals their spiritual soundboy side. In conclusion, title track "Afterglow" surmises the generous spirit at the heart of Smallpeople's operation; a sensitive and irresistible ode to record stores, parties, community, and discovery. So, worth that seven year wait? Who cares about time, when your music is this timeless.

VA An Anthology of Greek Experimental Electronic Music 1966-2016 2CD
An Anthology of Greek Experimental Electronic Music 1966-2016 aspires to map the heterogenous landscape of Greek experimental electronic music in all its contextual, sociopolitical, geographical and aesthetic disparity. With a single exception: it zeroes in on post-80s music. It comprises works of very different kinds by composers of all sorts of backgrounds that, still, can be thought of, as both "Greeks" and "experimentalists". Experimental electronic music is generally expected to be highly variegated, especially when examined in a breadth of several decades, and with respect to all sorts of artistic, academic, subcultural, and other influences. What is not so obvious, however, is that the very notion of Greekness, as well as its contextual and historical offshoots, are highly diversified, too. This anthology is an attempt to map the various kinds of experimental music that has been produced by Greeks over the last few decades. More, it is also an attempt to delineate different understandings of what "Greek" or "experimental" may stand for, by means of zeroing in on the numerous, often overlapping, realities and micro-scenes that are associated with the former. Double-CD version includes 20-page booklet.Features Anestis Logothetis, Dimitra Lazaridou-Chatzigoga, Panayiotis Kokoras, Christos Michalakos, Free Piece Of Tape, Ilan Manouach, Anastasis Grivas, Theodoros Zioutos, Nicolas Malevitsis, Ilios, Michalis Adamis, Fani Konstantinidou, Scizhic InzC, Georgia Spyropoulos, Panayiotis Velianitis, Iannis Xenakis, and Marinos Koutsomichalis. HARRISON, KEVIN Inscrutably Obvious LP
"Hailing from Nuneaton, England, Kevin Harrison recorded both solo and collaboratively throughout the late '70s and early '80s. While his early recordings would come out in hyper-limited editions or go unreleased for decades, Inscrutably Obvious remains his sole LP -- a lost gem of Britian's '80s cassette culture and DIY bedroom aesthetics. Originally released in 1981, Inscrutably Obvious covers a lot of ground on its seventeen inscrutable tracks -- from analog synth workouts to mutated disco and shimmering guitar improvisations. The album maintains a late-night vibe, filtered through a post-punk lens. Harrison clearly wears his influences on his sleeve -- major debts are paid to Brian Eno, Robert Fripp and Manuel Göttsching -- yet finds his own unique voice, combining quirky instrumentals and surrealist sensibilities. This first-time reissue is recommended for fans of Chris & Cosey, Cupol and The Normal. Inscrutably Obvious sounds as fresh today as it must have nearly 40 years ago."

PINK FLOYD Broadcast In Rome, Italy, May 6th, 1968 LP
The legendary Pink Floyd concert at the First International Pop Festival in Rome in May 1968. This well-recorded performance captures Roger Waters, David Gilmour, Richard Wright, and Nick Mason in their very early post-Syd Barrett era; the time when the band was busy trying to reinvent themselves after the crucial split with genius Syd Barrett. This was even before the release of their second album, when Waters and Co. really began to extend the classic three/four-minute song format towards longer and more open sound forms. A marvelous track list including seminal compositions and psychedelic manifestos such as "Astronomy Domine", "Set The Control For The Heart Of The Sun", and "Interstellar Overdrive" all great sparks for visionary instrumental progressions and far-out improvisations. 39 CLOCKS, THE Next Dimension Transfer 5CD BOX
The 39 Clocks are one of the most magnificent bands ever to have emerged from Germany; Diedrich Diederichsen, German pop boffin, considers them to be the nation's best band of the 1980s. The legendary duo from Hanover broke every rule in the music business, without exception. And -- above all -- with attitude. They are elusive, incapable of being categorized, unless the category is a little bit weird. Their real names have been eradicated ("never had one" -- Clocks), replaced by cryptic initials (CH-39, JG-39), less than randomly reminiscent of molecular chains like LSD-25. The weirdness is reflected in their music: sizzling irradiated, repetitive. The outrageous rumors surrounding the duo are the stuff of legend: strung-out live performances with vacuum cleaners instead of guitars, frequently facing a throng of concertgoers with a tendency to boo, flee the venue or threaten them with physical violence. The Clocks project really began to take shape in 1979 when they turned away from punk and created "psycho beat", positioning themselves as the antithesis of the emerging NDW/German New Wave movement. Their music is a futuristic, definitively urban, evolution of American garage punk from the 1960s. Their stylistic modus operandi: expressionless voice, English lyrics with an intentionally heavy German accent, dirty sound, cool monochrome image. Those lacking in imagination might identify touches of the Velvet Underground and stop right there, but many other influences were also at work: from Salvador Dali via the Troggs, Suicide, Peter Handke's Offending The Audience (1966), Antoine to Tiny Tim, Kurt Schwitters, Can, and NEU! The Clocks themselves spoke of "at least 123" sources of inspiration. In early 1980s Germany, the 39 Clocks were, at one and the same time, a panoply of discernible influences and a singular phenomenon with a clear, inimitable sonic identity. Time and again, the 39 Clocks succeeded in pushing back the borders of experimentation a little further: barely tolerable, protracted live improvisations, atonal passages, background noises, extreme lo-fi and a tinny beatbox test the listener's receptivity to the limit. And their sonic experiments popped up in various film soundtracks and on television series, like Halt and Catch Fire in the US. The Next Dimension Transfer box set, authorized by the band, provides the ultimate overview of the Clocks' output -- a phantom of the German music underground, enshrouded in myth.Available as a five-CD box set or a five-LP box set. Includes two regular studio albums: Pain It Dark (1981) and Subnarcotic (1982); two collections of outtakes, leftovers, and rarities (one of them renamed, edited, and updated by The 39 Clocks exclusively for this box set), plus, a previously unreleased live LP from 1981. Also includes comprehensive deluxe booklet (titled "Revelations") featuring mind-blowing new trivia and secrets; Booklet included with five-CD box set is 44-pages.

PROPER ORNAMENTS, THE 6 Lenins LP
LP version. 6 Lenins, the third album release from The Proper Ornaments, sees the band master their seemingly effortless but finely-wrought sound as their songwriting prowess refuses to plateau. Fresh from an US tour in autumn 2018, the London jangle pop group led by James Hoare (also of Ultimate Painting/Veronica Falls) and Max Claps (Toy) went into James' home studio in Finsbury Park, London and made their finest recordings to date on a newly-installed 16 track Studer machine -- joined by Danny Nellis (Charles Howl) on bass and Bobby Syme (Wesley Gonzalez) on drums. Having escaped deep, twisting tunnels of illness, divorce and drug abuse to release their second record in January 2017, it's unsurprising they sound sunnier this time around. What their supremely melodic work suggests is a nonchalance or naivety but is in fact an expensively-bought slice of coherence and clarity within a constantly shifting backdrop to their lives and landscapes. The band exists as an unassuming and resilient organism in a fiercely competitive, trashed environmental niche. Throughout their years of hard-edged music industry Darwinism, they've shown longevity and growth scuttling from the wreckage of their previous guitar bands to become one united organism. "We started writing new songs in the summer. I was in bed recovering from hepatitis and very broken and tired so couldn't do anything else apart from playing guitar," says Max, "and the songs slowly started to appear. In August we realized we had five new songs each and free time, so we decided to record them. The actual recording only took two weeks and it was considerably easier than our previous recordings." The speed with which 6 Lenins was made suggests the two songwriters managed to keep a keen focus on what they wanted to achieve, further finessing the balance of conflict and collaboration that lends their sweet, succinct tunes their nervous energy; this is well-crafted songwriting and controlled sonics despite a zealous analog sensibility. The opener "Apologies", sets out stridently and the mood and momentum, even as one weaves through some more somber moments, never dips before soaring with the Velvets-y propeller riff of live favorite "In the Garden" to end the record.

FENNESZ Agora CD
Agora is Christian Fennesz's first solo album since Mahler Remix (TONE 052LP, 2014) and Bécs (EMEGO 165CD/LP, 2014). Fennesz writes: "It's a simple story. I had temporarily lost a proper studio workspace and had to move all my gear back to a small bedroom in my flat where I recorded this album. It was all done on headphones, which was rather a frustrating situation at first but later on it felt like back in the day when I produced my first records in the 1990s. In the end it was inspiring. I used very minimal equipment; I didn't even have the courage to plug in all the gear and instruments which were at my disposal. I just used what was at hand." Fennesz uses guitar and computer to create shimmering, swirling electronic sound of enormous range and complex musicality. His lush and luminous compositions are anything but sterile computer experiments. They resemble sensitive, telescopic recordings of rainforest insect life or natural atmospheric occurrences, an inherent naturalism permeating each piece. He lives and works in Vienna. Recorded at Kaiserstudios, Vienna, August, September 2018. "Rainfall": vocals by Katharina Caecilia Fennesz; "Agora": field recordings Manfred Neuwirth, vocals Mira Waldmann. Photography and design by Jon Wozencroft. Mastered by Denis Blackham at Skye. Extended digipak. Opener 'In This House' serves as the ideal introduction to Cube: cellular interference, colliding circuitry, metal-on-metal grind and simplistic guitar distortion meet a towering and damaged beat. COLTRANE, JOHN Live At The Apollo Theater, Dusseldorf, Germany, March 18th, 1960 LP
Recorded by the German WDR radio at the Apollo Theater in Düsseldorf on Monday, March 18, 1960 this session documents a precise step in John Coltrane's career. While on tour in Europe with the Miles Davis Quintet, the young but already mature tenor saxophonist took the chance to lead a quartet session with the Davis rhythm section, a hard-swinging combo with pianist Wynton Kelly, bassist extraordinaire Paul Chambers, and drummer Jimmy Cobb. This is very fine set based on a bunch of well selected standards, among them "On Green Dolphin Street", Miles Davis's "Walkin'", and a deep ballad medley including "Yesterdays", "Autumn Leaves", "What's New", and "Moonlight In Vermont".

CHARLES, RAY The Great Ray Charles LP
Wax Love present a reissue of The Great Ray Charles, originally released in 1957. Ray Charles's second long-player was released on the legendary Atlantic Records. An instrumental jazz album, it was released two years before Charles became an international superstar with the hit recording "What'd I Say". Though Charles was already nearly a decade deep into his recording career he'd yet to have a massive hit and was a difficult artist to pin down as his tastes ranged from jazz to pop to R&B. Featuring longtime band member David "Fathead" Newman and with help from the arranging and songwriting genius Quincy Jones, this is a beautiful, swinging, and laid-back jazz album necessary for any fans of Ray.

KITT, LUCY Stand By CD
Essex-based singer songwriter Lucy Kitt presents her debut full-length album, Stand By, on Wineberry Records. A beautifully crafted self-penned gem, the album draws influence from the golden age of songwriting emanating from Laurel Canyon in the late '60s/early '70s. Stand By was recorded at London's Soup Studios and features contributions from Sam Beer, Dave Holmes, and Pat Kenneally. From the age of 16 she formed a riot girl grunge band Ostara with her cousin and two friends. Performing around the gritty nightclubs and bars of the East end of London is where Lucy found her love of playing live. During her university days in Canterbury, Lucy started developing her song writing and soon became a feature on the local music scene. Strongly influenced by '70s folk rock albums she heard growing up: artists like Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, and Neil Young, Lucy writings are honest, and heartfelt accounts of her personal experiences during this poignant chapter of her life. Propelled by her semi-finalist status at the 2006 BBC Radio 2 Young Folk awards, the live music scene beckoned, and Lucy has supported a host of musical talent ever since, including Cara Dillon, Turin Brakes, The Unthanks, Pete Mollinari, and Nick Mulvey. Major UK festival slots have included Cambridge Folk Festival, The Isle of Wight Festival, Secret Garden Party, and Lounge on the Farm, and Red Rooster Festival. Having won the 2014 Gibson/Sundance song writing competition, Lucy's songs have been placed firmly on the musical map. She has played gigs around the world, including Northern California, Sweden, Finland, Switzerland, and Germany. The hugely successful internet sessions recorded for "Mahogany", "Balcony TV", and "On't Sofa", provides a pathway for the world to discover Lucy's beautiful, vibrant, self-penned lyrics. 90,000 Soundcloud listeners eagerly await her debut album - she is now in the position where all this hard work could really start to shine.
