CASWELL, SAGE Evil Twin LP
Shape-shifting left coast producer Sage Caswell likens his latest full-length to a surrealist architectural space: "I walk up to a building and Evil Twin is playing. A copy of me is at the door and I let myself in. Inside the house is inside my head; each room is a different song and emotion." A distinct dream sequence logic threads together these nine nuanced tracks, which swerve from vaporous melancholy to ecstatic motion to nocturnal wanderlust, alternately lucid and opaque. 2018's relocation from his beloved home base of Los Angeles to Madison, Wisconsin certainly played a role, as pulling up roots inevitably does: "I love L.A. more than I can properly articulate, but I saw an opportunity to leave so I took it." The experience prompted an exploratory set of recordings inspired by notions of separation, vulnerability, and "how it feels to identify the things in your life that don't feel like you." Evil Twin captures Caswell at his most fluid and dualistic, mapping a multi-hued maze of twisted rhythms and refracted textures, fluctuating between beatific expanse and amniotic bangers. Previous releases for Spring Theory and Far Away showcased Caswell's capacity for innerspace club voyaging but here his vision skews even more vividly elusive, immersive and immaterial, lost and found. The record's contradictions were deliberate and, most importantly, therapeutic: "Evil Twin was intended to be as much a visual idea as a soundtrack to feeling out of control. I didn't really want to talk about it, so I made this album."

GUERRERO & FINIS AFRICAE, PABLO Los Dioses Hablan Por Boca De Los Vecinos LP
"I close my eyes, I open my memory, the pages go free: infinite images like a book of sand." --Pablo Guerrero"Creating collages of avant-garde ambience using instruments from the many corners of the earth, along with tape loops and samples, Finis Africae created a fourth world sound that was both exotic and mysterious." --Andy ThomasFirst vinyl edition ever of this lost experimental Spanish essential album. A delicate work that absorbs specific aspects of different music -- minimalism, tribal sounds, new age, ambient, spoken word -- to create its particular universe. With an absolutely contemplative recording climate, the poems and their sound environments explore the deepest self of the poet and singer from Extremadura, Pablo Guerrero. The work combines memories of childhood through the valleys of his native village, Esparragosa de Lares, with the evolution of life to reach the contemplative state in adulthood. A score written in a collaboration with two old friends, Juan A. Arteche Gual and Juan C. Fdez Puerta (Finis Africae), who weave a beautiful tapestry of electronic sounds so that the deep and serious voice of the poet shells all the images that his ode encloses. The recording, through fourteen poems, breathes an aroma of maturity, balance and total freedom. Maturity and balance with minimal arrangements, small gestures surrounded by abundant silences. Total freedom with instruments of the most varied, without restrictions or complexes: samplers, synthesizers and field recordings mixed with rattles, self-arches of the Appalachian Mountains, zithers, saxes made with reeds, conches, shortwave radios, plastic pipes, Hindu harmoniums...beauty can arise from any element and all these minimal arrangements come together to create the perfect ambience that sublimates the poem. Completed in the spring of 1996, the recording was moving in no man's land until the end of 1999 saw the light in book format of poems, accompanied by a CD. Abstrakce Records recover this masterpiece of experimental Spanish music, contributing its bit to place the album where it deserves. Folder printed in letterpress with lead types; Includes extensive booklet in both English and Spanish containing liner notes, lyrics, an interview with Juan F. Puerta and a text by Juan A. Arteche about of the recording of the record. Remastered at Sountess Studio in 2018 by Pablo Peiró.

Hoodna's musical director is the guitarist and composer Ilan Smilan. The cultural and musical environment that surrounds the group has a great effect on its creative process. On this remix collection, Switzerland's Alma Negra invite a trio of equally curious producers to remix their work. French producer and DJ Bambounou capitalizes on the quick tempo and raw-energy at the heart of the Maloya sound for his raw and hypnotic reimagining of "Kabare". Glenn Astro takes on "Haleto Lale Lalô", applying the soft pressure of his weightless, smooth funk. Cult producer and musician Michal Turtle, best known for LPs and compilations on Music From Memory, delivers only his second ever remix in a forty-year career, conjuring a magical slice of dreamy, percussive pop from "Tany Be".

VA ALERT! 2LP
The stark, rattling percussion and morbid howls into the ether of "Theme 7" signal not just the return of NAAAHHHH but kick-start Alter's fiftieth release with suspense. ALERT! dredges the depths of grimy UK bedroom studios, old computer hard-drives, and budget lager-soaked gallery sonics in search of presenting a unifying vision of a particular brand of the here and now. Label associates Chain Of Flowers take you deep into hypnotic motorik territory, whilst similarly driving new work from Teresa Winter shows a more frantic side to her productions than 2018's LP for Death of Rave (RAVE 025LP). The underground sound of puddle country shines through with contributions from anarcho. sample-mulch legends Cru Servers and Night School mastermind Apostille. Fellow Glasgow-based Helena Celle delivers an old-school jack trax style rhythm work out alongside The Modern Institute trying their hand at deranged happy hardcore and the finest Mancunian ambient you'll hear all year from Space Afrika. One of the most enthralling moments comes from Raime side project Moin, a claustrophobic, tempo-disregarding marriage of sound that will make you feel like you're lost at sea and seconds away from drowning. Each piece on ALERT! is bound by a distinctly punk attitude, a form of experimentalism that skirts across genre markers and forces you to sit up and pay attention. Zero coffee house easy listening or functionality here -- there's metallic clanging, skittering drums and screeches, tough as nails gabber compression (check the Acolytes track "Feelings") and dirge-y guitar feedback all fighting for space in a surprisingly coherent manner. Sound artist and broadcaster Mark Vernon's "The Object Invoked Has Disconnected From Its Host" lulls you into quintessentially British, nightmare-inducing radiophonic territories with terrifying fragmented media chatter, making for one of the highlights of the compilation. If anything, we can agree on the fact that this double LP stands to highlight the fringes of carefree, convention defying abstract electronics that currently permeate our little island in an illuminating and necessary way. Also features Anna Peaker, Mosquitoes, Mumdance, and Tomaga.

ZOUMBAS, ALEXIS A Lament for Epirus, 1926-1928 CD
2019 repress. "Alexis Zoumbas' expressions of longing are so raw and unmediated that I suspect anyone who has ever yearned for anything -- who has ever gazed dolefully out a window, or sighed audibly over a cup of whiskey, or felt subsumed by a certain kind of ache -- will feel these songs like a club to the back of the knees. They are immediate, destructive, and stunning. That Christopher King was able to collect and contain them for us is an extraordinary gift." --Amanda Petrusich; Years of research and obsession have resulted in this, the first collection of recordings by the legendary and masterful Greek folk violinist Alexis Zoumbas. Very few pre-War musicians have tapped deeper into the human soul than Zoumbas and this volume presents his most profoundly hypnotic and unearthly pieces. A deep set of notes is accompanied by previously-unpublished photographs as well as original artwork by R. Crumb. Respectfully crafted by Christopher King and Susan Archie for Angry Mom Records.

BARTLETT, MARTIN Anecdotal Electronics: Live Experiments & Other Recordings LP
Martin Bartlett was an inspiring and original thinker, composer, writer, performer, and organizer. His preoccupation with building aleatoric elements into electronic music distinguishes his work. He devised elegant and open interactions for instrumental performers and computer-controlled synthesizers which included building his own electronic devices and extensive work on the Buchla 400. He worked with or studied under Pauline Oliveros, John Cage, and David Tudor, and collaborated extensively with Don Buchla, and some of their live performances are included on the LP Anecdotal Electronics. He also studied Carnatic vocal music with V. Lakshminarayana Iyer in Madras, South Asian music with Pandit Pran Nath, and gamelan with K.R.T. Wasitidipuro. He founded the Vancouver Community Gamelan in 1986. His performances were often collaborative -- for the Western Front's second anniversary in 1975, he devised the four-channel piece "One Piece for Everyone", where he prepared and cooked a cauliflower curry on a table connected to a self-built synthesizer, while reading from texts on food. When the curry was cooked, the piece ended, and everyone was fed. Bartlett was a prolific writer, and he expresses himself in fresh, lucid, and wonderfully descriptive prose, offering clear thinking on social aspects of electronic music performance; on the barriers between the performer and the "black box" and on possibilities for organic systems in electronic music. He also wrote the incandescent manifesto-like piece "Electronic Recalcitrant" (which forms the cover artwork for Anecdotal Electronics), in which he hoped that electronic music would be imbued with "organic codes of growth and metamorphosis" so that he could "pluck elegant and fleshy electronic sound fish from the frothy algorithmic sea of possibilities". It is unclear why Bartlett's work remains unknown. Perhaps it is because it remained largely inside the academy. Perhaps his commitment to live performance and community activity means it was more transient than the work of others. Perhaps his openness about his sexuality played a part in his music not receiving much recognition -- one can only speculate. But correspondence in his archive shows that rejection from labels was a source of great personal discontent, leading to Bartlett working with the Western Front to release his final opus "Pythagoras' Ghost" shortly before his death. Bartlett died young, of AIDS-related causes, in 1993, but his music is characterized by an irresistible and unselfconscious charm that renders his sound unique.Arc Light Editions releases an LP "sketchbook" of live recordings, experiments, and spoken word titled Anecdotal Electronics, and a CD of Bartlett's longer electroacoustic and orchestral works, titled Ankle On (ALE 010CD). Compiled and edited by Luke Fowler with Jennifer Lucy Allan. Mastered by Giuseppe Ielasi. "Three Songs" features Dan Shiedt + Doug Collinge.

PLOTKIN, JAMES The Joy of Disease: Demos & Remixes LP+CD
Progression and creativity are keywords regarding James Plotkin's oeuvre. Beginning with the relentless, ever evolving and hallucinating music of O.L.D., through his many solo records and collaborations, to the surreal heavy-weight sound of Khanate, he's always been bound to be personal. Proof of quality are these instrumental demos of his landmark album of experimental music The Joy Of Disease. The Joy Of Disease: Demos & Remixes showcases the initial recordings in preparation for the cult-favorite album, released in 1995 on John Zorn's Japanese Avant label. These early home-recorded instrumental versions are supplemented by unreleased remixes from Plotkin and co-producer Mick Harris of Napalm Death/Scorn fame. The remixes were done during the original album sessions at Mick Harris' Black Box studio in the Custard Factory in Birmingham, UK. This is the first time these demo recordings have been heard by anyone other than Plotkin since their inception."... somewhere full of stabbing psychedelic guitar loops and a slow, steady swarm of almost goth-like dirge beats that was quieter than something of the Wax Trax! or Boredoms ilk, but also subtler and simpler, with an avant-garde touch of Bruce Gilbert-styled feedback minimal electronica." --All Music

DE FABRIEK Made In Spain LP
Official reissue of Made In Spain, the experimental industrial electronic classic by De Fabriek originally released by Discos Esplendor Geométrico in 1987."A bunch of friends whom knew each other from the city of Zwolle, and as such they recorded their first LP Schafttijdsamba at home in 1980. After that the group splintered and expanded, odd as it may sound. The original core went each own way and De Fabriek sought outside help. This was a time of independent cassette culture, home production of music, corresponding and mail art and so it happened membership, co-workers in De Fabriek lingo, were fanatical home tapers around the world, with a director at the helmet in Zwolle, albeit not a director not in the capitalist sense of the word, but someone directing the sound. Listening to the cassettes received, deciding upon order and layering of various sounds. For Made In Spain De Fabriek headed out to Nijmegen, Studio De Tempel, and home of Mekanik Kommando. But workers and a director are not enough for a factory, it also needs machines, and machines were plenty around in De Tempel. Following a decision on what goes where along with what other received contribution, and then mixed together, using the vast amounts of effects racks available in this studio, which put their fingerprint on this record. Made In Spain was an expansion of an earlier release 'Mont Cantis', slightly the same yet significantly different and exploring the industrial sound a bit further, taking cues no doubt from the music of Esplendor Geometrico, taking matters a bit further and deeper, to stay within the theme of old mines in the German Ruhr area that runs through these ten pieces, this is a record that at that time saw De Fabriek fully connecting to the industrial scene without forgetting their earlier post-punk and krautrock roots. Yet unlike so many other industrialists back in the day, De Fabriek always remains to have some melody to be part of their music. It is not the noise for the sake of noise." --Frans De Waard, September 2018

YAN + TERUYUKI KURIHARA Scrapbook CD
Yan and Teruyuki Kurihara are two thirds of Blue Tapes' Tokyo-based improvisational kosmische-techno wonders, Check!!! Blue Tapes released a collection by Check!!! in 2018 that proved well received by music fans of many affiliations, earning comparisons to luminaries as distinct as Can and The Future Sound of London. Now, Check!!! is no more, but bassist Yan and guitarist/producer Teru have streamlined that band's sound into something equally as beautiful, with the parent unit's eclecticism replaced by a newfound sense of purpose. The mesmerizing vortex of delayed and panned guitar notes that opens this new CD sets the tone for a largely instrumental, guitar-focused work that is deeply soulful -- almost bluesy -- while at the same time as hypnotic as the most intense minimal composition or entrancing ambient music. You could imagine Scrapbook being a great, lost Factory Records album -- its floating, delicate guitar tones nestling up close to Vini Reilly's The Durutti Column, while its more electronic elements are as elegiac as early '80s-era New Order. Scrapbook is resolutely graceful music, whether it is delivering spiraling, bird-like guitar vignettes, or slowly, painstakingly building through a one-note throb of bass guitar into a heavenly chorus of synths over the course of the 11-minute epic "F". Features Akiyuki Ishizaki from The Cavemans.

YOUNG SCIENTIST Results, Not Answers CD
Bureau B present a reissue of Young Scientist's debut album Results, Not Answers, originally released in 1979. When you think of the music to have emerged from Seattle, grunge and Sub Pop are probably the first things that come to mind. But Seattle was already home to a vibrant alternative music scene back in the 1970s. One of the most prominent synthesizer acts of the period was the trio Young Scientist. Influenced by the likes of Cluster, Harmonia, and Tangerine Dream, they released their music exclusively on cassette. the hypnotic-meditative cyclical Results, Not Answers. Young Scientist (Marc Barreca, James Husted, and Roland Barker) -- released four cassettes as 1979 blazed a trail into the 1980s, capturing the electric excitement of their live shows, unwriting the rules with no less fervor than their punk rock neighbors. All three members of Young Scientist played synthesizers. The Results, Not Answers album presents Young Scientist in full flow through four tracks, forty minutes of hypnotic and/or rhythmic soundscapes. Although the band admit that they did not pay much attention to the recording process itself, the selections on Results, Not Answers are crystal clear and have effortlessly stood the test of time. "Brainless" ripples with tension through its fifteen and a half minutes, "Eastern Clouds" swirls with sitars before you loop through "Music For Feet" to the meditative, spiritualized patterns of "Omega". Results, Not Answers shines a light on Seattle at an incredibly creative juncture in the city's musical history. James Husted recalls: "The Seattle scene at the time was very active. There were many bands playing music across the spectrum. Many 'Art', 'Punk', 'Experimental', 'New Wave' etc. bands were forming and reforming all the time then . . . Young Scientist opened for the Dead Kennedys once, that shows how wide the spectrum could be at times. I feel ALL the bands of that time were pioneers in the genres they played. YOUNG SCIENTIST Results, Not Answers LP
LP version. They all pushed boundaries. I think in the electronic music scene, Young Scientist was definitely one of the pioneers and leaders at the time. We played many more shows and different venues than any other electronic music band at the time." First CD release and first vinyl release.

GOW, PETE Here There's No Sirens LP
LP version. Clubhouse Records release Here There's No Sirens, the debut solo album from Case Hardin front man Pete Gow. Long regarded as one of the UK's finest songwriters, Gow delivers an album rich in songwriting prowess and full of evocative imagery. A storyteller at heart, Gow conjures up a modern-day classic that entwines itself around your heart whilst penetrating the soul, underlining his reputation whilst stretching the band confines into new pastures. Awash with strings and piano, Here There's No Sirens is undoubtedly Gow's boldest endeavor. The album was produced by Joe Bennett (Bennett Wilson Poole) at Farm Music Studios in Oxfordshire. Pete: "I asked Joe to make this sound unlike any record I had previously made, so listeners can be assured they are hearing something uniquely different. Joe was the perfect foil... he politely appeared to tolerate that ridiculous mandate." Case Hardin are one of the UK's most loved Americana bands and have played festivals such as C2C, Truck, Maverick, and Wood. Their last album Colours Simple (2015) was described as a "rock masterclass" by Q Magazine, an "album lovers album" by Mojo whilst No Depression relished its "ambitious, headstrong and no holds barred" approach.

HOGAN, ANNI Lost In Blue CD
Lost In Blue is the brand new album from Anni Hogan (Marc & The Mambas, The Willing Sinners, La Magia). An astounding, attentive work on an emotive shared journey. Songs in despair searching for hope, moments of monumental horror, and outpouring screams of consciousness. A poignant, bleak album for these times. Lost In Blue has elements of orchestral delight, dark cabaret, and modern vaudeville, with Anni's trademark torch songs evoking the dimly-lit corners of bohemian Soho and reigniting the sordid torment of those illustrious Marc & The Mambas days. All this is wrapped in the magical vocals of: Lydia Lunch, Wolfgang Flür (ex-Kraftwerk), Gavin Friday (ex-Virgin Prunes), Kid Congo Powers (The Gun Club, ex-Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, ex-The Cramps), Richard Strange (Doctors Of Madness), and many more. Produced by Dave Ball (Soft Cell) and Riccardo Mulhall, the brilliant guests' lyrical content responds perfectly to the music, resonating with and cohabiting the sonics created. Also features Celine Hispiche, Scarlet West, and John Fiddler. Photography by Peter Ashworth. File next to: Marc & The Mambas, Jacques Brel, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds. BELSON, GREG Divine Disco Volume Two: Obscure Gospel Disco (1979-1987) CD
"By the mid-70s many established and independent gospel artists started creating records with a tight four-on-the-floor beat that touched both churchgoers as well as patrons of the drug-fueled establishments of the '70s. Second instalment of Greg Belson's Divine Disco -- for this collection he dug deep into his crates to undercover the rarest independent and private press gospel disco records ever recorded. Many tracks are under the radar or recently discovered such as Harrison Jones's 'On that Other Shore', Converters' 'I've Been Converted' and the super limited self-released 45 by Mr Jesse R. McGuire, 'Jesus Is On the Mainline'. Only 50 copies were ever pressed. This volume even includes gospel disco from the UK with Paradise's brilliant 'Keep the Fire.' This compilation also includes remixes and edits by Steve Cobby (who was a member of Fila Brazillia) and the Divine Situation production duo of Greg Belson and Paulo Fulci."

S3A Pages 2LP
After S3A's Deep Love 2018 contribution (DIRT 113LP), Dirt Crew present you this great collection of music. Coming from the French underground S3A, aka Max Fader, is absolutely no stranger to the scene. He is deeply rooted in house, hip hop, disco, soul, and funk serving residencies at Paris clubs Concrete and REX; he has become a local favorite as well with his DJ and live sets. Dirt Crew release this special debut album which showcases some older and recent work, with live acoustic songs from early 2017 recorded at the Paris "Red Bull Music" studios to new sample-based house and disco infused tracks in the signature "S3A" style. "Fever", "Friends", "Joint No. 5", and "Greed" are all funk-fueled jams composed by Max, re-played and recorded again in several live jams with fellow musicians Nicolas Taite, Raphael Vallade, and Pierre Vadon then edited in the studio by S3A afterwards, they breath this special soul and funk love Max got into by listening to Masters At Work and old disco jams. The latter "Greed" has a special story, it is a cover of an early Laurent Garnier track that got reworked by Avril in the early '00s, here Max wanted to present his own jazz and funk perspective on that same track. The club stompers "First Day With Lucien", "Lockwood", "Clarence J. Boddicker", and "Leaving 19th" are the true party business on this album and range from deep house to more classic edit style disco tracks with live improvisations played on top of them. "Interlude For Marc", "Obsession", and "Eaux Troubles" introduce a third vision of S3A's musical universe. Cinematic, emotional and with a much more old school "trip hop" approach to them, in some parts even referring to '80s Italo/cosmic and early French funk. Max also added a very personal "Intro" and "Outro" to the vinyl version that consists of field recordings from his trips abroad and kids Eva and Bastien accompanied by Rhodes and strings recorded during the abovementioned live sessions.

BLUME, FELIX Fog Horns LP
French sound artist Félix Blume keeps pushing the boundaries of field recordings for everyone's enjoyment. Fog Horns captures the sounds of boat horns in Piraeus, Athens, Greece, the port city that serves some of the most important ferry routes in Greece nowadays. Yes, boat horns are annoying, sometimes disturbing and even absurdly disrupting if you live in a port city or one that is blessed with the arrival of cruises -- everyone knows that. But recordings of funerals could be tricky, and Félix Blume pulled a gem out of 2018's Death In Haiti: Funeral Brass Bands & Sounds from Port Au Prince (CREP 051LP). And he has done it again. The A side reveals a long track recorded during a fog horn concert whilst side B features three "remixes" of the same recordings, paying respect to what Ingram Marshall did in Fog Tropes in three different "movements". In a way, B side sounds like the perfect soundtrack for the recent remake of Suspiria (2018). But Thom Yorke got in the way. Jokes aside, there's something magical about these horns. In the eighteen minutes of the first side, Félix Blume explores the concept of a concert played by those horns. The horns dominate but sounds of the surroundings create a perfect balance to the drone hysteria. The surrounding sounds are the heartbeat of this track. The horns are the metal section of an orchestra, while the rest works like the strings. Hidden melodies are revealed when you listen to this with your full attention, and the more you do it, the horns become less present, vivid. It's one of the many crafts of Félix Blume, the more you live with his music, the more you focus outside the plot. If those eighteen minutes sound tremendously real, the three tracks on the other side feel like a horror film. The warmth disappears to become cold ambiance, beautifully textured and enigmatic sounds take over. Horns are still heard, but they're a different kind of horns. It seems that Félix Blume is playing with our perception, from bliss to horror. A honk will never be the same again.

MYTHIC SUNSHIP Upheaval LP
2019 repress; LP version. On their third album, Upheaval, Mythic Sunship take their deepest dive yet. Their own brand of wobbly boogie doom reaches new dimension of pure Sabbath-like proportions. Yet there's also a new state of re-fined inner space. Mythic Sunship don't only know how to let it rip and let loose -- they are also masters of knowing when to turn down and zone out. The restless, manic beat of Frederik Denning rides on a dense blanket of fuzz from Rasmus Cleve's bass. This rhythm section flows the ground for epic stoner sagas. Leaving ample space for the fuzzy, shimmering, and downright crushing dual guitar excursions of Emil Thorenfeldt and Kasper Stougaard. Upheaval is the apex of the band's journey so far. Mythic Sunship sounds mature and unified like never before on this set, but also maintaining their raw searching edge. It's a culmination and refinement of their idea: the ethos of free jazz in a doom setting.

ABRAMS AND NATURAL INFORMATION SOCIETY, JOSHUA Mandatory Reality 2LP
Double LP version. LPs pressed on premium audiophile-quality vinyl at RTI from Kevin Gray Lacquers; Presented in a textured gatefold Stoughton "laserdisc" jacket with a cover painting by Lisa Alvarado. Jackets, retro-audiophile sleeves and record labels hand-screen printed by Alan Sherry at Siwa Studios, Northern New Mexico. Mandatory Reality, the new album by Joshua Abrams and Natural Information Society, is here. Setting aside (for the moment) the electric instrumentation of Simultonality (GB 048CD/MTE 068LP, 2017) and Magnetoception (MTE 063-64LP, 2015), Joshua Abrams conceived Mandatory Reality for an eight-piece acoustic manifestation of NIS, consisting of himself on guimbri, Lisa Alvarado on harmonium and gongs, Mikel Avery on tam-tam and gongs, Ben Boye on autoharp and piano, Hamid Drake on tabla and tar, Ben Lamar Gay on cornet, Nick Mazzarella on alto saxophone, and Jason Stein on bass clarinet. A double album, Mandatory Reality is comprised largely of two performances, both Joshua Abrams compositions, 24- and 40-minutes in length. While new to the band's records, long duration pieces are familiar to those who've heard Joshua Abram and NIS in concert in recent years, where elaboration on a single composition for an hour or more is not unusual. Gradual tempos dominate Mandatory Reality. Recorded two months before the 2017 solar eclipse, Mandatory Reality is the sound of Joshua Abrams and NIS taking its time. Merging methodical compositions with sonically voluptuous orchestration, Abrams heightens the immersive and hypnotic qualities Abram and NIS music is known for, taking the band and the listener deep into a collective meditative space. A grand realization of long-form psychedelic music, Mandatory Reality is a dispatch from a sound world that is increasingly unique to itself. All performances on Mandatory Reality are full takes recorded live to tape by the full ensemble, magnificently captured by Greg Norman at electrical audio, Chicago -- the first true "audiophile" recording of Joshua Abrams and NIS. Mastered by Helge Sten at Audio Virus, Oslo.

HOME BODY Spiritus Cassette
Cassette version. "It takes audacity to start a song with questions as big and unanswerable as 'Where did we come from? Who are we really?' But for Western Massachusetts duo Home Body, those kind of grand cosmic queries are totally natural, fitting snugly into music that digs deep and shoots for the stars. The soaring voice of Haley Morgan and the throbbing, hovering electronics of Eric Hnatow create songs that are always on the rise, grounded by cardiac beats but unafraid to fly into the sun. On their ambitious second full-length record, Spiritus, Home Body ruminates on darkness, the light, and all the tiny intangible shifts that add up to transformation and change. Three years in the making, the self-produced album is lush with character and detail, displaying moments of ecstatic high energy melting into soft expansion, coaxed along by ghostly textured synths, momentum mounting, spirit settling. Romantic partners for over a decade and collaborators for almost as long, Morgan and Hnatow have been creatively telepathic for a while, and on Spiritus their innate connections produce songs in which every joint and muscle works in consort. 'The pieces of the puzzle fit together like voices,' Morgan sings in 'Lightning,' succinctly describing the duo's tightly-knit music. Home Body aren't afraid to sprawl, though. Their live performances are often dizzying spectacles featuring a home-made light show and elements of modern dance. Spiritus may present only the audio portion of that two-person extravaganza, but in its wide arrangements, sharply-honed turns, and ever-ascending moods, Home Body's music is as three dimensional as real life." --Marc Masters, 2019

MARS Mars Archives Volume Three: N.N. End LP
"Barring some miraculous discovery (never out of the question!), Mars Archives Volume Three: N.N. End is the final LP in our series of LPs documenting the music of New York's most amazing combo of the No Wave era, Mars. From their more-quotidian beginnings as China, whose sound was influenced by the Velvets and Television, Mars mutated and grew in a variety of nearly unchartable directions. N.N. End documents the latter, immaculate stages of the band's destruction of song forms once and for all. The A-side captures a live show at Max's Kansas City in July 1978. They were still playing some of the songs from the No NY compilation, which had not yet been released. Their sound had moved on since the recording session, however, and you can hear the songs dissolving structurally as they move along. Pretty amazing. The B-side is from a rehearsal tape recording while they prepped for their final show (at Max's in December 1978.) At this point, Mars was shredding the cocoon that had held their music. Then shredding the music itself. Vocals, guitars, rhythms all come apart in clumps, taking on lives of their own. Beyond good and evil, Mars stood alone. And then they were gone. Hope you've followed their contrail." --Byron Coley, 2019

VILLAGE OF SPACES Shaped by Place LP
"Brilliant new album from Village of Spaces, a combo once described as, 'Dan and his raggle taggle band of hippies' by Michael Hurley, a guy who knows about such things. The Dan in question is Dan Beckman-Moon who, along with his partner Amy Moon Offermann-Sims, is the central core of this constantly evolving, psychedelically-inclined, folk juggernaut. V.O.S. has had many name variations and members in the 17 years since Dan and Amy formed this more perfect union, but all of their recordings are possessed by a singular sense of rurality and otherness. They've been based everywhere from Santa Cruz to New Orleans to Belfast (Maine), and this album was recorded in expectedly nomadic fashion. Using various players and rooms from their network of collusionists, Shaped by Place offers a smoother ride than some of its predecessors. The two covers they do of songs by Gordon Bok (the legendary Maine folksinger/woodworker who was Dan's mentor when he was coming up) have a very sweet traditional swing. On 'Shoreline Birds,' the way Dan's voice interacts with the pedal steel puts me in mind of Mike Nesmith's classic collabs with Red Rhodes (like 'The Great Ennui' off Nevada Fighter (1971)). Other parts move like some unreleased Raccoon label album, with the same mix of straight and weird that whole crew managed to conjure up so effortlessly. Players on Shaped include members of Big Blood, Amps for Christ, Dire Wolves, and all manner of stylistic drifters. Sorta like what Hurley said, but better. A true feast of the mind, ears and soul. Dig in now or be forever hungry for something you can't quite put your finger on. Mystery is rarely served up so neat." --Byron Coley, 2019 Edition of 300.

GOOGOOSH Googoosh LP
Restocked; originally released in 2011. Googoosh collects some of the rarest records from the East's best-kept secret songbird, Googoosh, including forgotten B-sides and mythical LP tracks. Despite her reputation as one of the most legendary Iranian pop stars, Faegheh Atashin aka Googoosh is also the performer of some of the rarest heart-melting pop music in the world, originally pressed on the diminishing vinyl format. Her 1970s songs and performances were banned after the Iranian Revolution of 1979, resulting in her records being forbidden, hidden, and destroyed. Some of Googoosh's most famous songs have since become anthemic among global Iranian communities, but in a darker contrast, dozens of 45 B-sides and album tracks remain only as distant and nonexistent memories in the minds of the most devout fans and fastidious vinyl librarians. Googoosh focuses on a handful of these lesser-spotted tracks -- the ones that didn't get away. Googoosh's voice conveys an urgency and yearning that is arguably unrivalled under the often-disposable femme-pop umbrella. Mid-tempo pulsating pop paeans awash with expertly orchestrated strings (akin to those of some of the most intense European film composers) provide the backdrop for songs of unrequited love and poetic premonitions of impeding cultural heartbreak. Other tracks combine unlikely jazz, bossa, and early disco influences, which inadvertently incited political paranoia from the era's brooding anti-pop regime. Boasting deep roots in the history of Persian poetic verse and indelible Arabic songcraft, these lost tracks from the artist known among Farsi-speaking fans as "Iran's Daughter" have most certainly earned a place in the hearts of all outernational music lovers.

VA Bollywood Bloodbath: The B-Music of the Indian Horror Film Industry 2LP
2019 repress; Double LP version. After what seems like a thousand years of blood, sweat, tears, and a lot more blood, the zombified disc-disciples at Finders Kreepers unveil one of their most exquisite, exhumed, ectoplasmic, and existentially essential collections yet. This musical mausoleum of malformed freak funk and dreadful discothèque pop has been resurrected from the maligned cinematic subculture of Bombay's bloodthirsty horror film industry and witnesses the cognoscenti of the Bollywood pop scene at their most creative, destructive, and experimentally effective. Bollywood Bloodbath features India's finest composers, such as Bappi Lahiri, R. D. Burman, Sapan Jagmohan, and Laxmikant-Pyarelal, making the kind of radical risk-rock that would, under normal circumstances, have studio security escorting these overworked maestros off-set for a well-earned break or a relaxing exorcism. You've heard Italy's most famous composers when they soundtrack unwatchable Roman slasher flicks on their own uncompromised and underpaid terms? Well that blueprint just turned blood-red with sub-shoestring, low-budget studio wizards gambling with rigor mortis rock, disjointed disco, and low-voltage electronics for seldom-screened scenes of desi Draculas, lycanthropic ladykillers, and psyched-up swamp monsters. The factual history of the untraveled Bollywood horror phenomenon is fully re-exhumed with this compendium in true Finders Keepers style. Carefully documenting the drummy theme from the first-ever 1949 Indian ghost film, this benchmark collection follows the sinister lineage as directors of bloody thrillers take chances on shuddering synopsis and haywire special effects. Leading up to the inauguration of the notorious Ramsay Bros film company (whose sibling revelry in the '70s and '80s lead to the inclusion of flight-style puke bags in participating picture houses), this compilation pulls no punches and plunges the "B" of Bombay into the heart of the B-movie, squirting a masala of bloody ketchup and red wine onto the sets of Bollywood's glorious filmic musicals. Licensed exclusively from the independent Indian film music companies (revealing incidental tracks that they didn't even know they owned), Bollywood Bloodbath is the result of avid stomach-turning research via VHS tapes, chewed-up cassettes, and LPs, 12''s, and 45s, remastered from some of the only existing master tapes; presented for both the hairy home listeners and daring DJs. Also includes tracks by Rajesh Roshan, Hemant Bhosle, Ratandeep Hemraj, Usha Kanna, Khemchand Prakash, and Nadeem & Shravan.

RACE FATALISTS, HUGO Taken By The Dream CD
Following Hugo Race's recent excursions into world electronica -- Dirtmusic's Bu Bir Ruya (GB 055CD/LP, 2018) and Gemini 4 -- meets 21st century blues -- John Lee Hooker's World Today (2017) -- the former Bad Seed is back with a new album of modern folk songs. Hugo Race Fatalists' Taken By The Dream is a cinematic tapestry of complex emotional states illuminated by mercurial moments of dazzling light and grace. Recorded in Sicily in collaboration with Diego Sapignoli and Francesco Giampaoli from one of Italy's most popular and influential instrumental bands, Sacri Cuori, studio guests include Chris Brokaw (Lemonheads, Come, Codeine), Bryan Colechin (The True Spirit), violinist Vicki Brown (Calexico), New Zealand pop songstress Lisa Crawley, Giovanni Ferrario (Scisma, Micevice), and cameo appearances from Race's long-time musical partner Michelangelo Russo. Following Hugo's 2010 solo album, Fatalists, a unique mix of alt-country and electronica recorded in Italy with Sacri Cuori, the band took on the name of Fatalists and toured extensively in Italy, consolidating their unique sound on 2012's We Never Had Control. A five-track EP Orphans followed in 2014, along with tours in greater Europe and Australia. In 2016 Hugo Race Fatalists' released 24 Hours to Nowhere to international critical acclaim: "24 Hours from Nowhereis darker than the darkest Walkabouts song, it's a scorched earth vision... The songs sound magnificent, the instruments like blocks of grey tones, beautifully picked out, with plenty of room between them... Overall this is a dark Gothic piece that skillfully calls on Lee Hazelwood and Ennio Morricone to create a suite of songs that is beautifully constructed and breathlessly cinematic." --David Cowling, Americana UK "In Australia, Hugo Race is present not only with his music which speaks for itself, but also with a book he has recently published, Road Series, an autobiographical road novel. In it, he processes his travel experiences of the past 30 years -- a mixture of Bruce Chatwin and Jack Kerouac. But despite the unexpected literary success, Hugo Race continues to make music. He needs songwriting as the air we breathe, he says." --Carsten Beyer, Deutschlandradio Kultur

But their debut full-length dives into territory that feels distinctly untethered from their lineage and era. Drecksound is a clattering, shambolic oasis in the sleek digital desert of the late twenty-teens. Perhaps both because and in spite of the alienation that typifies the glut of rock music at the end of this god-damned decade, these twelve songs deliver a pointed social criticism, more cathartic than suffocating, while championing a nihilism that greets the abyss by laughing mockingly in its face. The chorus to the incendiary 'Step 2: Success' is sneered, not sung, 'It's a long con job and you just got it wrong / banned from the world.' McIntyre's lyrics present a puckish fascination with humankind's rake-stepping self destruction. He's a merry prankster, but more in the mold of a jackbooted Monty Python character than a Ken Kesey acid casualty. McIntyre and Williford's guitar interplay snakes in, out and around Lones's bass lines, which alternate between slinky earworm hooks and steel cable raw power. All of this is locked in by Watson's characteristically visceral swing. It doesn't feel controversial to claim that Watson and Lones constitute one of the best rhythm sections in contemporary punk music. Having played out heavy in 2018 with a refined live show, a four-song demo, and several Gonerfest appearances under their belt, HR cut Drecksound at home on a borrowed 8-track cassette machine. The deranged raw tracks were mixed into final form by Matt Qualls at Young Avenue Sound, and mastered by Jason Ward at Chicago Mastering."

BJORK, BRANT Jacoozzi CD
Brant Bjork on Jacoozzi: "Back in December of 2010, I went into a house in Joshua Tree California to record another solo record. About four days into the sessions, I decided to abandon the eight songs I was working on, told my long-time friend and engineer, Tony Mason, to start rolling tape and I proceeded to play drums in my natural improv style. After multiple drum track performances were captured, I then started layering guitars, bass, and percussion in the same improvisational spirit. I essentially decided to 'jam' by myself for the rest of my scheduled sessions. When the recording session had finally come to an end, I put the eight unfinished tracks on the 'shelf' as well as my 'solo jam session' tracks. I was much more content with the 'jam' tracks as it was a creative release that was needed at that time. I decided to call the collective tracks, Jacoozzi. At the time, it reminded me of the feeling of my first solo recording sessions for my first solo release, Jalamanta... only more 'free'. At that time in 2010, I had no formal plans to release any of the music from those sessions... Jacoozzi included."

ARABIA, LAWRENCE Lawrence Arabia's Singles Club LP
LP version. Whilst the sleeves of many artists are adorned with well-worn hearts as they release their complete albums into the world, as New Zealand born singer-songwriter Lawrence Arabia, James Wilne's latest project offers a rare glimpse into the creative process through 12 separate Lawrence Arabia's Singles Club releases -- now available on one handy LP and bringing together an extensive list of VIP members. One day in late 2017, at his home in Auckland, James sent a message on a whim and suddenly found himself in an email tête-à-tête with Van Dyke. A "lullaby for neurotic adults", 'Just Sleep (Your Shame Will Keep)" was originally written for Arabia's psychedelic comedy podcast sensation, "Mysterious Secrets Of Uncle Bertie's Botanarium," but took on a new lease of life with the addition of Van Dyke's piano, accordion, scratch woodwind, and double bass. Constructed in Lawrence Arabia's revered bedroom recording style, each Singles Club offering was built with ruthless ambition. "Everything's Minimal", "Cecily", "Meaningless Words", and "Oppositional Democracy" began through the course of the year and were completed in the following months whilst other songs were revived from rough demos that followed 2016's Absolute Truth as quickly and instinctually as possible. Bound with one seamless invisible thread, the album stands as a body of work capturing a moment in time. Like those buildings with their structure on the outside, Lawrence Arabia's Singles Club exposes the inner-workings of what it takes to create a record and offers any member a one-way ticket to Dreamsville. "I'm delighted at how it all ended up flowing," he tells. "I treated it like making a mixtape in extreme slow motion, so tried to make each song respond to the previous one the way you might when choosing a DJ set on the fly. Except this set was one year long, only twelve songs, and the songs had to be written and produced before they could be played." Lawrence Arabia has previously released albums on Bella Union and Flying Nun.Van Dyke Parks on the project: "As inviting as the honk of the Good Humor Man of the '50s, who toodled his ice-cream truck through neighborhoods of my youth. Such tune-smithery simply isn't for tyros. It takes real savvy to pull it off. James Milne is equipped for such craft. I was delighted to feel attached to such a talented work, a notch above, and so plainly fanciful. Dreamsville!"

ALBERICH Quantized Angel CD
Few contemporary industrial acts are spoken of in such highly reverential terms as Alberich, the solo project of underground super-producer Kris Lapke. While Lapke himself may best be known for his production and mastering work, both for such diverse sounding acts like Prurient, Nothing, and the Haxan Cloak to his audio restoration work for COUM Transmissions and Shizuka, Alberich has achieved a cult on par with many of the legends he works with; Lapke's diverse contributions as a producer are recognizable for the perfect balance of maximalist and minimalist electronics that Alberich has relentlessly authored. Since Alberich's 2010 masterful and highly collectable two-and-a-half hour NATO-Uniformen album (HOS 421LP), he has become a powerful force of modern industrial music. With only a series of limited tape and split releases, fans have been waiting with bated breath for a true follow-up album. Quantized Angel is Alberich's first full-length album in almost a decade. In the intervening years between albums, Alberich has grown more nuanced, creating atmosphere and tension on par with Silent Servant's classic Negative Fascination LP (2012) in regards to production and attention to detail. The results create a newly polished but no less intense vision of modern industrial music. Over the course of the album's eight tracks, Alberich demonstrates a vision of ruthless existential electronics, a sound both commanding yet questioning in introspective spirit. Features exclusive track contributed to Berghain 09 2x12" mixed by Vatican Shadow on Ostgut Ton.

LUSSURIA Scarlet Locust Of These Columns CD
Hospital Productions presents a CD reissue of Lussuria's Scarlet Locust Of These Columns, originally issued as a limited four cassette set in 2015. The scarlet plague, the temple quarantined, the foundation upholding the pestilence, the betrayal, the market without vendor, the shrine without idol. Originally released as a limited four cassette set, this proper CD version has been mixed and remastered in proper form while still holding dear the decay of the original cassettes. Like the difference of opening a dusty cabinet in the kitchen of one's grandparents' to find a shelf full of expired foods. Now, this version is like opening the door to the cellar and being overwhelmed with thick dusty air, the planes of light pouring through the cracks and draping one like temple veils at night. Morbid esoteric ancient ambient brought to life on the ancient CD format, a relic from times now past and times of erotic glory. Mastered by Paul Corley. In A5 digipak.

WAGNER, VANESSA Inland CD
Inland is Vanessa Wagner's continuation of the exploration of the minimalist composers register to complete the solo continuum of the Statea released in 2016 with the Mexican producer Murcof. Inland highlights a set of pieces, mostly rare or unavailable to date (Moondog, Nico Muhly, William Susman, Bryce Dessner, Gavin Bryars...) and some other well known (Philip Glass, Wim Mertens, Michael Nyman) that Vanessa Wagner performs with her classic pianist background and velvet sound. The title of the album refers to John Cage's Imaginary Landscape (1939), one of the first works to use electronic devices. Making more with less, the album turns long harmonies into multicolored prisms, miniature detailed embroidery, sighs and breaths, syncopated or restrained chants. The choice of works and their sequencing was dreamed up as a sort of storytelling. Between familiar melodies and unknown rarities, the pianist dug deep to find previously unreleased pieces. Within the cornucopia of Wagner's career, Inland stands as a hitherto unknown intimate and dream-like space. The album is both the fruit of her maturity and a new temporality that she is now exploring -- a secret conversation between her spirituality and the deep connection she maintains with nature, the elements, and living matter. The Inland journey begins with the vision of iconoclastic Moondog, who claudicates over a modest ritornello, and continues with French composer Emilie Levienaise-Farrouch's "Louella", like a volatile caress. On the way, you come across familiar figures like Philip Glass, and rediscover Michael Nyman's "The Heart Asks Pleasure First", as Wagner's fingers transfigure the cult piece, rendering it with delicate sensuality. At the origin of the source, German composer Hans Otte plays entrancing magic tricks with the fluids that spring henceforth; on the horizon, the inescapable Meredith Monk draws you into her hypnotic circles; elsewhere, Bryce Dessner is takes you on a dream-filled odyssey with characters who guide you to boundless territories, and William Susman breaks down boundaries under the harmonic mists and mute rhythms of "Quiet Rhythms". At the end, you find a blank canvas of quiet nature, a clearing in which Latvian composer Peteris Vasks invites you to listen to the suspended silences. When the album is over, the spirit of Inland continues to stir inside the listener's mind, in hazy reverie, clouds of nostalgia emanate from Vanessa Wagner's piano.

ASTROBAL L'infini, L'univers Et Les Mondes CD
Emmanuel Mario keeps moving. The further he travels, the more he sounds like someone who has finally arrived where he has always been supposed to be. After collaborations with artists like Stereolab's Laetitia Sadier or the group Holden, his last album as Astrobal took the French composer and drummer to Australasie in 2016 (KK 092LP). On his second album for the Berlin-based Karaoke Kalk, he ventures even further, eventually heading for L'Infini, l'Univers Et Les Mondes ("infinity, the universe and the worlds"). Leaving behind the more krautrock-inspired approach he followed on Australasie, Astrobal focuses on a way of storytelling that takes conventional pop songwriting as a point of departure, yet arrives in previously unknown places. Over the course of eleven songs, the multi-instrumentalist further perfects his craft of life-affirming, funk-infused synth pop. Drawing on the work of pioneers like Brian Eno or Yellow Magic Orchestra, '80s electronic funk music and blue-eyed soul, shoegaze, and the rich tradition of progressive music and kosmische in his native France, L'infini, l'univers Et Les Mondes indicates a major development in Mario's futuristic and decidedly cosmic approach to songwriting. At the heart of the "French psychedelic new age pop for the world", as he himself has dubbed his sound, always sits a rhythmic idea -- an irresistible groove that is being complemented with intricate synthesizer harmonies and bouncing bass lines. In the meanwhile, Mario's voice is drifting over the tightly woven compositions as if in zero gravity. Not quite lonely, intimate yet far away, occasionally in conversation with robots and other inhabitants of outer space he comes across on his journey. As a coherent narrative, L'infini, l'Univers Et Les Mondes tells a story of extraterrestrial excursions. As a musical statement however, it sees Astrobal coming home after more than two decades in the world of music, finding a niche for himself with a style that is as adventurous as it is thrilling.

HARNETTY, BRIAN Shawnee, Ohio CD
Shawnee, Ohio, the first album by sonic ethnographer Brian Harnetty on Karlrecords, is an intriguing blend of archive recordings of interviews with residents of that small town and melancholic chamber-folk, performed by his ensemble which features, amongst others, Anna Roberts-Gevalt (Anna And Elizabeth) and Paul De Jong (The Books). Brian Harnetty (b. 1973) is an interdisciplinary artist working between music composition, sound, and socially engaged art. Rooted in sound archives and the communities connected to them, his body of work contends that the simple act of listening -- to people, places, and their pasts -- can transform our futures. Both a 2018 A Blade of Grass Fellow for Contemplative Practice and a recipient of the 2016 Creative Capital Performing Arts Award, Harnetty is deeply involved with local issues of Appalachia and the Midwest. He connects sound archives with performance, ecology, and place -- an approach for which he was labeled a "sonic ethnographer". Many of his pieces transform archival material -- including field recordings, transcriptions, and historic recordings -- into newly re-contextualized sound collages. For more than a decade, this has led to projects with archives such as the Berea College Appalachian Sound Archives in Kentucky, the Sun Ra/El Saturn Archives in Chicago, and the Anne Grimes Collection in the Library of Congress. Harnetty has released four internationally acclaimed albums: American Winter (2007), Silent City (2009), The Star-Faced One (2013), and Rawhead & Bloodybones (DTD 050CD, 2015). In the words of Harnetty himself: "Shawnee, Ohio is a sonic portrait -- past and present, real and imagined -- of a small Appalachian town in the United States. Shawnee emerged as a coal mining town in the 1870s. A century of decline forced businesses and people to leave, and today local residents fight to hold their buildings and community up amid a new 'fracking' boom. Despite an uncertain future, these residents continue to work for environmental, economic, and cultural enrichment. Since 2010, I have been visiting and working in Shawnee. I have also been retracing the footsteps of my family, who immigrated there as Welsh coal miners in the nineteenth century. Shawnee, Ohio focuses on eleven portraits of local residents recounting their lives, work, friendships, and deeds. They talk and sing of mining, disasters, underground fires, social life, protest, and hope..." CD comes in heavy cardboard DVD digipak; Includes 20-page booklet and download.

LES POINTS Proletariat LP
With Proletariat, Les Points pay a twisted homage to the early foundations of electronic music where hard-to-get tapes, dystopia and the sound of the wretched worker were present in genres like post-punk, industrial, minimal synth, new beat and wave. It's changing -- the worker searched for post-leftist solutions and got lost. Nine circles applauded the proletariat and imagined how a community could be congregated, while screams of violence would be filtered by boiling blood. Exploiters of labor either find themselves rotting away in a never-ending icy rain or dragging their selfish accumulations on their chests for eternity -- while the worker slowly identifies himself as a counter-commodity. Algorithms (fraud) always mislead -- once the worker gets past them only DJs will be awaiting her/him.

MINYO CRUSADERS Echoes of Japan CD
Minyo Crusaders rework historic Japanese folk songs (min'y?) with Latin, African, Caribbean, and Asian rhythms for their debut album Echoes of Japan. Releases from Ryuichi Sakamoto, Haruomi Hosono, and Midori Takada have re-ignited global interest in Japanese music and Echoes of Japan marks the arrival of a big band like no other. "For Japanese people, min'y? is both the closest, and most distant, folk music," explains band-leader Katsumi Tanaka: "We may not feel it in our daily, urban lives, yet the melodies, the style of singing and the rhythm of the taiko drums are engrained in our DNA." Initially indifferent to min'y?, a tragic event in recent Japanese history set Tanaka on his current path: "Following the Tohoku earthquake of 2011, I reflected on my life, work and identity. A fan of world music, I began searching for Japanese roots music I could identify with. Discovering mid-late 20th century acts Hibari Misora, Chiemi Eri and the Tokyo Cuban Boys, I was captivated by their eccentric arrangements and how they mixed min'y? with Latin and jazz." Originally sung by fishermen ("Kushimoto Bushi"; "Mamurogawa Ondo"), coal miners ("Tanko Bushi") and sumo wrestlers ("Sumo Jinku"), these songs deal with topics such as the returning spirits of ancestors ("Hohai Bushi"), Japan's smallest bird ("Toichin Bushi"), and a bride's love for her husband's pockmarked face ("Otemoyan"). PEARLFISHERS, THE Love & Other Hopeless Things CD
Following Open Up Your Colouring Book (MA 077CD/LP, 2014), Glasgow's magnificent Pearlfishers return with Love & Other Hopeless Things. It's their eighth on Marina Records -- a superb comeback full of masterful, classic pop music, driven by main man David Scott's exceptional songwriting and arrangements. The album kickstarts with its beautiful title track -- a song in the tradition of British songwriters like Paddy McAloon and Michael Head -- about ordinary people dreaming and drowning in the big city. "Another foggy Monday morning/ Sail the ferry to town/ And think of all the people's dreams..." The song is led by a Bacharach-like flugel horn motif played by Colin Steele who recorded an entire album of Pearlfishers songs in terrific jazz arrangements: Diving For Pearls (MA 082CD/LP, 2017). Love & Other Hopeless Things also features a beautiful string quartet which recalls the graceful understatement of George Martin's classic pop arrangements. "Could Be A Street Could Be A Saint" is a celebration of life during the pre-Christmas days on Glasgow's Sauchiehall Street. You can hear the influence of Scottish popsters Pilot whose stacked acoustics and harmonies defined pop sheen in the '70s. The track finds its counterpoint in "A Walk Into The Blue Night" where you enter a magical world of "sainted streets" where songs start to flow -- with an Ennio Morricone-like combination of minor key harmonies and orchestration. "You Can Take Me There" proves that you can create captivating soundscapes with just piano, vocals and a tiny bit of guitar. The track flows on a sublime Gilbert O'Sullivan groove -- also reminiscent of Laura Nyro, one of Scott's heroes. A long-lasting Pearlfishers tradition continues with the inclusion of a quirky instrumental: "A Woman On The Verge Of Becoming A Cyclist" (talking about quirky!) sounds a lost '70s movie theme --culminating in a brass band fanfare. Love & Other Hopeless Things also features two splendid songwriting-collaborations. "Once I Lived In London" was written with Bill DeMain -- Nashville broadcaster, Grammy-nominated author, and member of US duo Swan Dive; the beautiful piece of chamber pop recalls London in the '80s. "Sometimes It Rains In Glasgow" was written and performed with Joni Mitchell/Carole King-influenced Becci Wallace. The wistful ballad "Another Sunflower" closes the album on an emotional note. Revisiting the Pearlfishers' seasonal album A Sunflower At Christmas (MA 063CD/LP, 2004), this New Year's Eve song is augmented by a stunning string arrangement.

SCHULZKI, STEFAN Chamber Music CD
Stefan Schulzki is known for his especially creative implementation of live electronics. While this can be heard on Chamber Music, the program offers a much more comprehensive overview of Schulzki's work. The recording features chamber works with various instrumentations, from a simple piano song (a new setting of Goethe's "Erlkönig") to a piano concerto with chamber ensemble and electronics written in 2018, from the bitterly ironic Politisches Lied 2011 to the lyrically expressive theater music Die Zeit und das Zimmer (Botho Strauss). All of the recordings were studio productions except for the piano concerto, which is a live recording of the première."Piano Concerto (2018)" performed by: JU[MB]LE (Jugendensemble für Neue Musik Bayern); Vincent Neeb - piano; Stefan Schulzki - electronics; Johannes X. Schachtner - conductor. "Politisches Lied 2011 (2011)", with text by Norbert Niemann, performed by: Salome Kammer - mezzo-soprano; Alexander von Hagke - tenor saxophone; Claus-Dieter Jäkel - trombone; Johannes Öllinger - electric guitar; Stefan Schulzki - piano; Walter Bittner - percussion; Kai Wangler - accordion; Yasuka Morizono - violin; Uli Fiedler - double bass. SEZER, ATAC Simultaneity CD
Ataç Sezer draws inspiration for his compositions from highly varied sources: the 24 different tonal systems of Turkish makam music, for which he has developed new forms of notation, and also from microtonality and electronic music. He likes to experiment with new playing techniques and loves combining Western and Eastern instruments. Ataç Sezer studied piano and musicology as well as the ney, the traditional flute of Ottoman court music. On Simultaneity, a portrait CD which offers an exclusive selection of chamber, ensemble and orchestral works, it becomes clear how present the influences of two musical traditions are in Sezer's work."mirror-reversed" performed by: Sercan Halili - kemençe; Young Euro Classic Festival Orchestra Turkey-Germany; Cem Mansur - conductor; "relativity of simultaneity" performed by: Soloists of Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra; TrioCoriolis; "infinitimal" performed by Studio Musikfabrik; Peter Veale - conductor; "Toned Melisma" Münchener Kammerorchester; Alexander Liebreich - conductor; "time loop" performed by Johannes Öllinger - electric guitar; MGNM Festival Ensemble; Peter Hirsch - conductor; "A-Circle" performed by Stefanie Schumacher - accordion; TrioCoriolis.

JAKOBI, WOLFGANG Live at Megeve Festival Savoy Truffle CD
The music of Wolfgang Jacobi is worth (re)discovering. Born in 1894 on the island of Rügen in Germany, he pursued university studies and worked in Berlin until his music was banned by the Nazis. Following a brief exile in Italy he resettled in Munich in 1935 where he played a significant role in the public music scene of the post-war era. Jacobi had a pronounced affinity for instruments considered unusual at the time such as the harpsichord, saxophone, and especially the accordion, his use of which is pioneering in contemporary music. In 2018, the Megève Festival Savoy Truffle dedicated a series of performances to Jacobi's music using prominent musicians. These performances, which include a world premiere recording of Jacobi's string quartet by the Arditti Quartet, are now being released on NEOS to commemorate his 125th birthday."Concerto for Harpsichord and Orchestra Op. 31 (1927/1947)" performed by: Andreas Skouras - harpsichord; Orchestre des Pays de Savoie; Sándor Károlyi - conductor; "Italian Songs for Soprano and Piano (1954)" performed by: Marion Grange - soprano; Ambroise de Rancourt - piano; "String Quartet (1948)" performed by Arditti Quartet (Irvine Arditti and Ashot Sarkissjan - violins; Ralf Ehlers - viola; Lucas Fels - violoncello); "Serenade and Allegro (1958)" performed by: Dimitri Bouclier - accordion; Union Accordéoniste Mixte Genève; Pierre-André Krummenacher - conductor.

WOOD/JOHN CAGE/BRIAN FERNEYHOUGH, JAMES Two Men Meet, Each Presuming The Other To Be From A Distant Planet / Ryoanji / La Chute d'Icare CD
Contemporary music is a central component of conservatory training today and is practiced at the University of the Arts Bern at the highest level, as this recording attests. When they were written (between 1983 and 1995), these three pieces would have been neither technically nor logistically possible to play at a music conservatory. Each work poses its own challenges. In "Ryoanji" by John Cage it is the unusual structure, which is based partially on chance and requires the interpreters to go beyond merely executing the notation. In his "Two men meet, each presuming the other to be from a distant planet", James Wood employs electronics in a way that exhausted the capabilities of the equipment in the 1980s such that it is necessary to perform the work using these "historical" electronic devices to get the proper sound today. In terms of its instrumental technique, Brian Ferneyhough's "La Chute d'Icare" is music of an almost absurd difficulty."Two men meet, each presuming the other to be from a distant planet (1995)" performed by: Brian Archinal - percussion; Ensemble VERTIGO der Hochschule der Künste Bern; Lennart Dohms - conductor. "Ryoanji (1983-1985)" performed by Livia Schönbächler - flute; Ensemble VERTIGO der Hochschule der Künste Bern; Lennart Dohms, conductor. FRISCHKNECHT, HANS EUGEN Music for Special Organs CD
The organs that Hans Eugen Frischknecht plays on this CD are extraordinary, one-of-a-kind instruments. He wrote his compositions precisely for these instruments, turning each one's characteristic sound and capabilities into a main feature of each piece. Among these "special organs" are two quartertone organs, one is tuned in meantone temperament with split sharps and two prototypes from the INOV-ORGAN-UM research project. On these latter organs it is possible to adjust the air pressure, even after pressing the keys, to cause variations in the loudness and even pitch of the notes. Hans Eugen Frischknecht has traveled to many countries as an organist, often performing his own works. He studied with Boris Blacher and Michael Schneider, and later also with Olivier Messiaen in Paris.

PALMER, ROBERT Piano Music CD
"Robert Palmer (1915-2010) produced more than ninety symphonic, choral, chamber, and solo works throughout his career, earning a reputation in the mid-twentieth century as one of the country's leading, most daring, and -- at the same time -- appealing modernists. Palmer's unique musical language combined a deeply emotional impulse with complex counterpoint and rhythmic structures, drawing comparisons to Hindemith, Bartók, Lou Harrison, even Brahms. Aaron Copland famously included Palmer on his 1948 list of seven composers whom he considered 'the best we have to offer among the new generation,' a list that included Lukas Foss, Leonard Bernstein, and John Cage. This recording, the first devoted solely to the work of this enigmatic and still-unsung hero of American composition, comprises the bulk of his landmark piano works. (All but three are premiere recordings.) A long-overdue and important addition to the canon of recorded modern American music, it serves as a timely portrait of one of the most fascinating figures of a lost generation of mid-century American composers, introducing contemporary listeners to music that sounds as audacious, rousing and emotionally raw today as it did half-a-century ago. Several important pianists have recognized Palmer's music for its haunting beauty and unique rhythmic tide, including John Kirkpatrick, William Kapell, Claudio Arrau, and Yvar Mikhashoff. Palmer's music, full of pathos and joy, illuminates for a whole new generation of musicians and listeners the possibilities of tonal writing. He is part of the chain of events that brought us to our contemporary environment of tonal freedom, and it's time to make amends and include him in that timeline. This album is a start." TENNEY, JAMES Changes: 64 Studies for 6 Harps 2CD
"Changes: 64 Studies for 6 Harps (1985) is a large-scale work that combines and connects many of James Tenney's (1934-2006) most important theoretical and musical ideas, including gestalt segregation principles and complex intonation systems. Composed with the aid of a mainframe computer at York University, the piece also marks a return to computer-aided, algorithmic composition after a long hiatus. It was one of the first pieces Tenney composed with a computer after he left New York City in the late 1960s to teach at the California Institute of the Arts. After Changes, the majority of Tenney's works involved computer software and formal, algorithmic processes. Tenney was both a prolific composer and theorist but rarely wrote in detail about his own pieces even though his music consistently implemented his theoretical ideas. One exception is his article, 'About Changes,' originally published in the journal Perspectives of New Music. 'About Changes' is a detailed and exhaustive theoretical companion to and description of the piece that carefully documents his compositional procedures, many of which are highly technical and/or mathematical. At the beginning of the article, Tenney writes, 'My intentions in this work were both exploratory and didactic. That is, I wanted to investigate the new harmonic resources that have become available through the concept of 'harmonic space' much more thoroughly than I had in any earlier work. At the same time I wanted to explore these harmonic resources within a formal context that would clearly demonstrate certain theoretical ideas and compositional methods already developed in my computer music of the early 1960s, including the use of stochastic (or constrained-random) processes applied to several holarchical perceptual levels, both monophonically and polyphonically. The references to the I Ching, or Book of Changes, in the titles of the individual studies derive from correlations that were made partly for poetic/philosophical reasons but also -- and perhaps more importantly -- as a means of ensuring that all possible combination of parametric states would be included in the work as a whole. I must confess that I frequently thought of the twenty-four preludes and fugues of J.S. Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier as a kind of model for what I wanted to do with the work, although it seems highly unlikely that these studies themselves will ever betray that fact to the listener."

TEMPLE, PAULA Edge of Everything 2LP
Paula Temple presents her long-awaited debut album, Edge of Everything. The result of years spent ruminating on the healing powers of harsh noise, she employs a cinematic textural palette for a call to action in desperate times. The album will be available via her own Noise Manifesto imprint. Across twelve tracks, Paula applies warped aesthetic distortions to a broad exploration of techno. Industrial, determined and fostering a deep sense of urgency, Edge of Everything encourages a refocusing of the dominant political narrative, spurring its audience with the direct message that oppressive forces must be held accountable for their actions. As an antidote to apathy, Paula targets raw emotion, urging us to act upon injustice. Sonically, the album focuses on darker manifestations of the genre, appreciating their frankness without trying to confuscate. Murky acoustics and grainy synths writhe through cavernous spaces whilst marching drums enforce an unrelenting pressure. Brandishing a rich tapestry of noise, Paula highlights the healing powers of darkness, drawing strength from anger and motivation from hurt. Fast percussion and expansive sound design command attention throughout, immersing the listener in a frenzied swirl of acoustic treatments and sinister, albeit strangely inviting textures. Each track carves a unique sonic space, imagining alternative worlds of their own, from the mammoth stomping ground of "Joshua And Goliath" and psychedelic synth leads of "Quantum Unfolding" to the frantic ecological nightmare of "Raging Earth". Also featured as part of the vinyl release is the previously digital-only track "Gegen" -- a testament to Paula's careful fusion of vast sonic creations and wrathful techno. Edge of Everything is a clear statement of intent, geared towards the disambiguation of manipulative politics and dishonest leaders. A counterargument to the mediocre mainstream, it's also Paula's most personal release to date, applying a learned musical history into direct action. Double LP version comes in gatefold sleeve; Includes download code.

HOME BODY Spiritus LP

CATZ 'N DOGZ Friendship CD
Escaping to a wooden cabin in the Spanish countryside village, Cercedilla, which also shares the name of the opening album track, Greg and Voitek of Catz 'N Dogz came together to create an album that re-wrote their history book. Known for their diverse style and ability to craft varying pace and rhythm, the duo sought out consistency with their Friendship album to make an album in the truest sense; a long player to be listened to as one body of work. Vocalist and guitarist James Yuill on the Spanish inspired "There", fellow polish native Rosalie. on "Mind" and deep vocals of ZENSOFLY and Maxville on the funky "Wave". Traveling into new territories of cross-genre and lingual collaboration, leading Polish rapper, Taco Hemingway lays down lyrics in English on "Yi Fang". Along with longtime friend Kiddy Smile and fellow creative mind Rouge Mary, teaming up on '90s house-inspired love song "One Plus You". Appearances also come from WhoMadeWho on the cool and breezy "Never Go Down", before later delving deeper into the ethereal voice of Jono McCleery in "Would You Believe" and the eerie folk-esque vocals Egl? Sirvydyt? on second-last track "Water". Sharing the same name as their countryside escape, introductory interlude "Cercedilla", eases the listener in with warm notes and raw samples of running water taken from the cottage that became their home. "New Love" celebrates new possibilities and challenges that come throughout life; narrated with rumbling break-beat and euphoric synth lines. Big kicks and funky melodies in "This Feels Real", build anticipation for what is set to follow in the acidic elements of "Questions"; denoting the rollercoaster of emotion one can experience throughout the relationships we make. Hugging the listener with emotional piano chords, "Moments Turn To Hours" encourages the idea of being at peace with oneself, acknowledging the long and hard times and allowing them to pass on by. Looking back to the Berlin days of Catz 'n Dogz, "Last Song For Berlin" summarizes the decade they spent there. Celebrating the people and friendships they made and channeling the soulful side to a city so lauded for its darkness in the techno scene. Picking up with "Hedonic Treadmill" drum and bass elements, layered with emotive keys and uplifting soulful samples, see out the album with a sense of euphoria and hope for the future.

HOMLER, ANNA Deliquium in C LP
American performance and improv artist Anna Homler is best known for her early work as Breadwoman, originally released in the mid-80s. Ever since, Homler has played a myriad of live gigs, released a steady stream of music, and has been part of numerous collaborations. With Deliquium in C, Präsens Editionen presents four new tracks originating from Homler's collaborations, on which she sounds gentle and pervasive, maternal and childlike, enigmatic and familiar, playful and severe, squeaking and humming. For Deliquium in C, Homler worked together with four extraordinary artists moving in the domain of electronic music in its broadest sense: Gang of Ducks' Alessio Capovilla, Mark Davies's alias The Pylon King (who, together with Homler, forms the duo Voices of Kwahn), PAN-affiliate Steven Warwick, aka Heatsick, and the late Steve Moshier, who produced the original Breadwoman tape (1985). These collaborations emphasize once more just how versatile Homler is, as a singer and as a master of her toys. Graphic design by Dorothee Dähler. ORCHESTRA OF CONSTANT DISTRESS Cognitive Dissonance LP
Orchestra Of Constant Distress is: Joachim Nordwall (The Skull Defekts, iDEAL Recordings), Anders Bryngelsson (Brainbombs, No Balls) Henrik Rylander (The Skull Defekts, Union Carbide Productions), and Henrik Andersson. One core dynamism within the field of music is the relationship between performer and spectator. The audience listen and watch the musicians enjoying themselves and through that they get an experience of joy. This requires a system of believing where organized sound can be recognized, and is therefore music as such. Upon listening to Orchestra Of Constant Distress's third album, you might want to question this meaning of tonality. Through catatonic riffs and uncanny sounds, listeners are left with a situation where they do not know how to distinguish bad and good, pleasure from displeasure. Orchestra Of Constant Distress seems to be moving beyond their decent from such bands as Brainbombs, The Skull Defekts and Union Carbide Productions towards a tension of disbelief. Mastered by Martin Siewert . "Smalltown Superjazzz was a free-jazz subsidiary label to Smalltown Supersound from 2005-2012. The label has been dormant since 2012, due to the fact that Smalltown founder Joakim Haugland 'didn`t feel the label any longer'. So in 2012 Haugland put the label to rest. Phase two. AFJ-Series represents a new start. Built on the foundation and heritage of the Superjazzz label. AFJ-Series is short for Actions for free jazz. This was the slogan for Smalltown Superjazzz and was borrowed at the time from Don Cherry & Krystzof Penderecki's The New Eternal Rhythm Orchestra track 'Actions For Free Jazz Orchestra' from the 1971 album Actions. AFJ-Series will be a series and a subsidiary label within the Smalltown Supersound label. The inspiration for the label is BYG Actuel, Incus, Freedom and ESP-Disk. All releases will be vinyl only, no CDs (some will be available digitally). The vinyl will be limited to 500 copies and no repress. The series' design will be by Smalltown designer Kim Hiorthøy. The albums will be executive produced by Haugland and Lasse Marhaug."

VA Songs From Satan's Jukebox Volumes 1 & 2: Country, Rockabilly, Hillbilly & Gospel For Satan's Sake CD
Hell-O my satanic friends! Do not listen to the evil biblical propaganda from above because you are undoubtedly worthy enough, daring enough, and ready for a second insane stroll through the devil's carnival. For a sinful walk through this hellish fair! You feel seedy enough to secure a second devilish ticket for Satan's fiendish ghost train! Escape your boringly sizzling purgatory and come, hurry up and step in... come aboard, take a seat, because Satan is the only one who really knows how to have a hell of a time. This place is teeming with Azrael's many seductions: Only here, with the devil, will you meet provocatively lovely ladies with sinfully luscious lips and flashing eyes that will tempt, then blow your mind. Only here, with Satan, can you sip the diabolic drinks for free that reflect the malicious moonlight. Only here, with Lucifer, can you feast on promising satanic dishes to delight the depths of your taste buds. And only here, with Satan and his drunken engineers, they will again provide "legions" of breath-taking Gadara-wagons for you, lightning-fast hot-rods, arrow-fast black trains to take you straight to hell! You only need to be prepared to bear the consequences... If you are not a spoilsport! All the artists gathered here can sing a song about it... From Hell with Love, Saint Satan, Old Nick. Compiled by Emmerich Thürmer. KOVACS, KORNEL Stockholm Marathon CD
Kornél Kovács's second album is on the way via Studio Barnhus, which he runs with Petter Nordkvist and Axel Boman. Stockholm Marathon sees the Swedish-Hungarian producer, who was born in the Swedish capital, "reflecting a lot on this beautiful, boring city I never quite manage to move away from," he says, after moving back in September of 2018. Kovács credits his "dearest Stockholm people" for making the album his most collaborative and most personal release. That list includes jazz musician Niclas Skagstedt, Matt Karmil, Rebecca & Fiona, and Malin Gabriella Nordin, who did the artwork. The album is his second full-length, following 2016's The Bells (BARN 045CD/LP), also released on Studio Barnhus.

LASWELL, BILL City of Light LP
First time ever on vinyl, re-released in our Sub Rosa Blackcore series. City of Light is the sixth solo album by American composer Bill Laswell, released on July 29, 1997. While it may appear an anachronism in his catalog, fans of Bill Laswell will find City of Light an extension of ideas he has explored throughout his career. His strong interest in Eastern music and religion resulted in this 1997 collaboration with Janet Rienstra. Part sacred, spoken word, part meditative soundscape, City of Light takes as its inspiration the holy region of Banaras, India. Said to belong to Shiva, Banaras also contains the Ganges river: a place sought by Hindus for their cremation. Surrounding the texts is some of the most compelling music this genre has produced, featuring Trilok Gurtu on tablas, Coil (Peter Christopherson and John Balance) on electronics, Tetsu Inoue on sound collages, and Lori Carson on vocals. City of Light was recorded in Banaras, India, and mixed in Greenpoint, New York. It is about Banaras, a city older than history, tradition, and legends. It is Shiva's land, founded at the dawn of creation, and it is India's oldest and most fabled city. The Hindus call it Kashi, the luminous, the City of Light. Features a historical introduction by Hakim Bay. "Indian" green vinyl; Edition of 500.

ROCHE, JEAN C. Birds Of Venezuela LP
2019 repress. Sub Rosa present a reissue of Jean C. Roché's Birds Of Venezuela, originally released in 1973. The bird on the cover is a potoo; this metal-looking bird is one of the sonorous curiosities of this mad nature, the sound that he produces essentially is a death song that David Toop heard on his 1978 expedition, but was unable to record, amazement playing its role.Jean C. Roché on his recordings: "The bird songs which I had recorded in the West Indies in 1969 made me inclined to find out more about those of the nearby South American continent, and convinced me, moreover, that musically speaking, they possessed an unquestionable originality in comparison with those of Africa and Europe. I therefore decided to carry out a series of ornithological trips on this continent, starting in the north with Venezuela. With this in mind, I disembarked at Caracas on 27th May, 1972. The unusual musical volume of this tropical country made its impact known to me on my arrival in town, where the unbearably shrill chirping of the cicadas overwhelmed me each time I passed under a tree. At night fall, around even the meanest of ditches filled by the daily rain, myriads of toads and frogs struck up a concert, which, through its sheer intensity, muffled all other surrounding noises. When I penetrated the forest, I could hear bird species literally by the dozen and individuals by the hundred, all calling and singing together at dawn and at dusk."David Toop on Jean C. Roché: "Jean-Claude Roché (b. May 11, 1931) is a French ornithologist and wildlife field recordist. Roché recorded bird songs worldwide for over 30 years and has released over 130 records out of his recordings. Among many of his amazing records, I came across Birds of Venezuela, a beautifully produced LP of birdsong. I began to plan a trip to Amazonas, to record for myself the unearthly song of potoos and Yanomami shamanism."

WEERASETHAKUL, APICHATPONG Metaphors: Selected Soundworks from the Cinema of Apichatpong Weerasethakul 2LP
2019 repress. Double LP version. Includes color insert. Apichatpong Weerasethakul is recognized as one of the most original voices in contemporary cinema today. His seven feature films, short films, and installations have won him widespread international recognition and numerous awards, including the Cannes Palme d'Or in 2010 with Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives. The compilation album Metaphors contains 14 sound works carefully selected from his past cinema and other visual works since 2003, which includes Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives, Syndromes and a Century (2006), Fever Room (2016), and more. Weerasethakul has regularly worked with the same sound designers since 2003 and has always given importance to the personality of on-location sounds that give his films a sense of continuity. In post-production, he's fascinated by the manipulation of these "live" sounds in order to express "reality". This reality doesn't necessary represent the actual sound of the places, it's more of a representation of the world in layered memories. Similar to the way he treats images, Apichatpong sometimes calls attention to the physicality and the fragility of the audio (and its apparatus) and to the process of audio manipulation itself. In his cinema, Apichatpong prefers natural sound sources over music. Nevertheless, he often boldly incorporates popular songs that were persistent during the shooting. He doesn't shy away from using tunes that relate to his own personal memories. In this sense, Apichatpong values the spirit of authenticity much more than rigid manipulation of audio and weaves a complex and dreamlike soundscape in his cinematic repertoire. Born in Bangkok, Apichatpong grew up in Khon Kaen in north-eastern Thailand. He began making films and video shorts in 1994 and completed his first feature in 2000. He has also mounted exhibitions and installations in many countries since 1998 and is now recognized as a major international visual artist. His art prizes include the Sharjah Biennial Prize (2013) and the prestigious Prince Claus Award (2016). Lyrical and often fascinatingly mysterious, his film works are non-linear, dealing with memory and in subtle ways invoking personal politics and social issues. Metaphors is compiled by sound designers Akritchalerm Kalayanamitr and Koichi Shimizu.

THIELEMANS & BILLY HART, ERIC Talking About The Weather LP + BOOK
Talking About The Weather: Teacher and student. Past and present. Two drummers. Two men. Two fathers. Friends. A conversation. A dialogue of the drums. Following up on a drum/percussion duo Eric Thielemans and Billy Hart did in the Summer of 2016 at the Jazz Middelheim festival, these two drummers decided to dedicate time to continue and deepen their versatile dialogues on and around the drums. The meeting and recording of Talking About The Weather took place on January 7-9, 2018 at "Figure 8 Recording"; a beautiful, small recording studio in Brooklyn (NY). In three days' time both drummers circled around the situation of the studio and the conversational aspect of their personal relationship and musicianship. They did this in a way that shows how their musicianship informs and gives structure to a shared experience. As both men after a few sessions acknowledged: "We do talk as we play". Mr. Thielemans and Mr. Hart's story started in the Summer of 1992 when Eric Thielemans joined a masterclass with Billy Hart, organized by the Haleweyn Stiching Summer Jazz Workshop at Dworp in Belgium. This was the start of a deep human connection, friendship and mutual respect for each other's music and musicianship. 25 years in between, a gap, filled with many explorations, life experience and musical endeavors. Time to talk drum shop and drum the talk! Single-LP in 7.5 mm spine sleeve with a 50-page book. 180 gram vinyl. 50-page book, bound with pictures by Monica Jane Frisell and transcriptions of the talks.Billy Hart: William "Billy" Hart (born November 29, 1940 in Washington, D.C.) is a jazz drummer and educator who has performed with some of the most important jazz musicians in history. Early on Hart performed in Washington, D.C. with soul artists such as Otis Redding and Sam & Dave, and then later with Buck Hill and Shirley Horn. Hart moved to New York in 1968, where he recorded with McCoy Tyner, Wayne Shorter, and Joe Zawinul, and played with Eddie Harris, Pharoah Sanders, and Marian McPartland.Eric Thielemans: Belgian drummer, Thielemans is one of the most idiosyncratic figures in Belgian music, someone who not only demonstrates that special musicians always seek out (and find) their own place, but above all that they always remain students of the art of questioning and listening.

FRANCK PRESENTS MT GEMINI, YANNICK Just Like A River LP
Yannick Franck (Orphan Swords, RAUM) presents his new project: Mt Gemini. A deconstruction of ska, rocksteady, and skinhead reggae from the '50s, '60s, and '70s. Rather a passionate deconstruction of a genre than compositions or remixes per se, this incantatory tribute favors abstraction using loops, distortion, compression, variations of speed and height, and effects (delay, reverb, chorus). Recorded in different states of altered consciousness, Mt Gemini is built of spontaneous and unexpected combinations. It is an attempt to generate inner spaces where the borders between reverie and reality blur. A hallucinatory shock, a journey made of distant echoes, an atmosphere imbued with joy and nostalgia. Born in 1981 in Belgium, Franck is an electronic musician. During the last ten years, Franck has wallowed freely within diverse musical spheres. Whether cathartic or contemplative, Franck's projects serve an ever more ontological search: the creation of sonic immersions that influence our states of consciousness and contribute to their transformation. In addition to his solo works as Yannick Franck and Mt Gemini, he is the man behind projects RAUM and Outlaw Compound. He is part of the avant-techno duo Orphan Swords with Pierre De Mûelenaere and played in experimental combo Y.E.R.M.O. from 2005 to 2009. Marbled vinyl; Edition of 400.

KUDO, REIKO Rice Field Silently Riping In The Night LP
Tal present a reissue of Reiko Kudo's Rice Field Slowly Riping In The Night, originally released on CD by Majikick Records in 2000. Reiko Kudo first debuted on the Tokyo underground music scene in 1980 with Noise, a duo which apart from herself under her then maiden name Reiko Omura on voice, guitar, and trumpet featured Tori Kudo (Maher Shalal Hash Baz) on organ. Like other pioneering female producers from Japan such as Non (of Non Band), Phew, and Haco, Reiko Kudo has an incredibly unique, uncategorizable, and daring voice. Rice Field Slowly Riping In The Night was Reiko Kudo's second album under her own name. It features Tori Kudo as well as Saya and Takashi Ueno (Tenniscoats) on various instruments. The recordings took place in 2000 at Reiko and Tori's house in the rural surroundings of Shikoku Island. All recorded music on this album sounds like it originates in a parallel dimension where time and key signatures simply don't exist. There is nothing accidental or forced here, this is simply music created in a very different way. Restoration and mastering by Detlef Funder at Paraschall Mastering, Düsseldorf; Cut at Calyx, Berlin Translation by Miki Yui and Claus Laufenburg. Includes insert and download; Edition of 400."After producing the album Souvenir De Mauve with Maher Shalal Hash Baz which we released on our label Majikick, the idea came to us, to release Reiko Kudo's work. For Reiko's work, we brought our recording equipment from Tokyo to Shikoku and recorded the entire album at her house . . . Reiko plays only at certain times of the day, so that we were able to complete only two or three recordings a day. Therefore, we had plenty of free time. We went to a hot spring, to a cafe, or we tried pottery on a spinning wheel at Tori's workshop. It was a very rewarding time. When this album was finished, we brought it to her to listen to. She said happily 'I think this is the best work I have ever done.'" --Saya and Ueno (Tenniscoats), Tokyo, 2018

ELVA Winter Sun CD
Elva is the new project of Allo, Darlin's Elizabeth Morris and Ola Innset, of the Norwegian bands Making Marks and Sunturns. Winter Sun was recorded in the Autumn of 2018 in an old school house in the Swedish forest, during moose hunting season. Meaning "The River" in Norwegian, Elva take their inspiration from the natural world, the beauty of the Scandinavian summer and the harshness of the winter. Several of the songs on the album are tellingly inspired by the birth of Elizabeth and Ola's daughter. Some might feel the album is sonically most similar to the Allo, Darlin' album Europe (2012), thanks in part to the lush string arrangements courtesy of long-time Allo, Darlin' collaborator Dan Mayfield on violin and cellist Ofelia Østrem Ossum. Michael Collins, who played drums in Allo, Darlin', recorded and produced the album, building on work he has done in recent years with artists like Metronomy and Girl Ray. Diego Ivars on bass and Jørgen Nordby on drums round out the band. The sonic palate of the record is detailed and delicate, with a mix of acoustic and distorted guitars, vintage keyboards, strings, and intricate vocal harmonies. Lyrically and melodically, the album showcases the depth of both Morris and Innset's songwriting. At times recalling the gentleness and screech of American indie bands like Yo La Tengo, at other times the country-tinged heartbreak of Linda Ronstadt or Laura Veirs, Winter Sun is something of its own: a rich combination of polar opposites. Summer and winter, Australia and Norway. Elizabeth says: "I really wanted to make an album that had a nice mix of really quiet and gentle songs, together with the louder feedback-y stuff. It was great to be able to share songwriting duties with Ola, as finding time to write is trickier these days with a baby in tow, so it really took the pressure off to write all the songs myself. It also gives the album another dimension, and I have always loved bands with two songwriters, like the Go-Betweens. Hopefully we bring out the best in each other's writing. But having less pressure on myself to write all the songs meant that the songs I could contribute felt worthy enough of having a place on the record."

KAPOTE What It Is 2x12"
The first album on Toy Tonics is the debut album of Toy Tonics label boss, Kapote. And it's kind of a manifesto of the label's sound: a perfect blend of jazz funk and slow house. It's time to solve the mystery as to who Kapote is: it's Munk! It's the same person. It's Mathias Modica. The Italo-German music nerd, label owner, vinyl collector, keyboard wizard, DJ, and producer based in Berlin. Modica is both artists: Munk and Kapote. And he is the creative mind behind Toy Tonics and Gomma. Now, after six Kapote EPs, it's time to do this album: On What It Is, he plays basslines that remind the deep funk of the 1970s. He plays crazy Rhodes solos (he used to study jazz piano) and programs heavy funky beats on the drum machines. Modica is music obsessed with a crazy collection of rare vinyl and a jazz piano player with skills on many instruments. And he combines both: rare samples and live instruments. "Jaas Func Haus", "Salva Tion", and "Fusion 79" are broken beat house with a heavy jazz fusion feel. Keyboard solos, funk chords, a Bob James 1970s vibe. Some crazy saxophone licks switching in from time-to-time. "Delirio Italiano" is a stand-out track: it's Italo disco. On "Brasiliko Kapote" is influenced by the warm old Brazilian disco sounds -- lot of Rhodes and flute solos, no samples at all. The following tracks ("Fuck Music", "The Nose", "Get Down Brother", "L.O.V.E.") were released in different versions before, but have been reworked for the album. Shorter, with new mix and lot of changes. The other two new tracks ("Salva Tion", "Space Drum") are dirty, mid-tempo, broken beat jams with a unique funk vibe.

"Pete Rock is widely recognized as one of the greatest hip hop producers of all time. His name is oft included in the pantheon of the greatest, alongside DJ Premier, RZA and J Dilla. In addition, Pete has one of the world's most extensive vinyl collections, the sort of collection whose size can only be estimated --and that estimate stands in excess of 100,000 LPs. His production forte is the melding of Jazz with early 90s East Coast boom bap, regularly sampling classic soul greats like James Brown & Curtis Mayfield, jazz oddities like Tom Scott & Les McCann, and innumerable others. This production prowess is best demonstrated though his work with partner in rhyme CL Smooth. There was a time however, before Pete met CL. A time before the world came to know Pete Rock & CL Smooth. A time when Pete was a 19 year old in his basement in Mount Vernon, NY making beats with an SP-1200 drum machine, sampler, and sequencer. These previously unreleased beats are now compiled here in Return Of The SP1200, the debut release from Rock's own Tru Soul Records, and a tribute to his beloved sampler. DWARFS OF EAST AGOUZA/CHRIS CORSANO & BILL ORCUTT Electric Smog LP
Electric Smog, the next installment in Unrock's ongoing Saraswati series, will be the most rebellious and wildest to date. Again an intercontinental output, this is a dangerous, electric brew filled with exotic aroma from Cairo's sound guerilla, Alan Bishop (Sun City Girls), Maurice Louca (Karkhana), and Sam Shalabi (Land of Kush, Karkhana). The always-changing face of Dwarfs Of East Agouza shows them in a feverish mode with an adrenalin rush; massive eruptions fight a genuine flow. Chris Corsano & Bill Orcutt manage to sound like a tonal cyclone consisting of 156 musicians, blowing heads and minds away. Out of the blue they suddenly manage to change mode and develop mild, calm, and elegant/fragile melodies. Interplay between early Baker and Clapton in Cream's looser frequencies seems sometimes just a stone's throw away. Electric Smog is meant to be a twin release to Sir Richard Bishop and David Oliphant/Karkhana with Nadah El Shazly's Carte Blanche (UNROCK 013LP, 2019).

Following Night Moves (BEC 5156022/5156023, 2015) and Kid We Own The Summer (BEC 5156710/5156744, 2017) and its harmonious keyboards, H-Burns goes back to the quintessence of his music style: an impeccable songwriting praised internationally and an interpretation undeniably precise. To narrate in one album the only two stories worth being narrated -- the one about a man living his home, and the one about a man coming back to his home -- H-Burns (aka Renaud Brustlein) first matured his project isolated in a home-studio owned by French underground collective La Souterraine before bringing it to the studio with a team of musicians and engineers that he meticulously picked as usual: Earl Harvin from Tindersticks on the drums, Kate Stables from This Is The Kit as a vocal guest, Noah Georgeson (The Strokes, Andy Shauf, etc.) for the mixing, etc. Understandably titled Midlife, this new album, recorded on analog tapes, tells the story of a man who looks back over the journey of his life, remembering his dreams of glory, the lost love stories, what he left behind from the others and from himself. "Sister" features Kate Stables. CD version comes in two-panel digisleeve; includes 12-page booklet.

NORMAL BRAIN Lady Maid LP
Repressed; LP version. WRWTFWW Records present the reissue of impossible-to-find cult album Lady Maid by Japanese outfit Normal Brain. Originally released in 1981 as a limited vinyl pressing of 300 copies on Agi Yuzuru's fabled experimental label Vanity Records (R.N.A. Organism, Dada, Sympathy Nervous, Tolerance), Lady Maid is a testament to the creativity of the early '80s Japanese electronic and experimental scene, encapsulating a prolific era when audio gear became affordable for musicians to explore sounds in the comfort of their home, free from studio time pressure and major label rules. Entirely imagined and brought to life by an inspired Yukio Fujimoto, the six-track opus was conceived with a Korg MS-20, Korg SQ-10, Boss Dr. Rhythm DR-55, and a Texas Instruments Speak & Spell. It's elegantly minimalist, honest and witty, very playful, cleverly pop, and downright fascinating. The A side captures the fun side of avant-garde electronica, lo-fi wave, proto-glitch, and IDM, a joyful ride beautifully interrupted by the cinematic mood switch of the B side -- a 20-minute ambient piece flirting with sci-fi, melancholy, and hints of metallic darkness. Unclassifiable and marvelous! Includes liner notes by acclaimed sound artist and mastermind behind the project, Yukio Fujimoto.
