LIVANSKIY, KEDR Ariadna CD
2019 repress; 2017 release. Moscow's Kedr Livanskiy (real name Yana Kedrina) confesses, "Synthesizers help me maximally feel the present moment." Livanskiy was born into a shifting and critical time for Russia. The Soviet Union had exhausted and old values were anathematized because of reconstruction. A sense of displacement drove Kedr to find herself. She's escaped reality repeatedly in her explorations into the imagery and ideas of romanticism, mythical, and fairytale themes which visibly bleed throughout her work and especially on her debut full-length Ariadna. The title track which was named after the Greek goddess, Adriane, debuted via Thump who've stated it "anchors its elegantly drifting shoegaze melodies with a knocking electro beat." Ariadna marks a change in her recording approach: her critically-acclaimed breakthrough EP January Sun was written and recorded completely in Ableton, while Ariadna was written using the Roland SH-101, Roland Juno 106, and Korg Minilogue synthesizers, then mixed down in Ableton. According to Kedr, "This way, one gets into a flow of live interaction, here and now, with the instrument." There is a definite leap in production values this time around, but Kedr manages to keep true to her sound despite the greater polish and depth. "ACDC" features Martin Newell.

GREEN LAKE PROJECT GLP CD
Green Lake Project's GLP is an album that vibrates with the endlessness of space and an intense atmosphere of rocket-powered departure. It finds expression in the heaving waves of the basslines and the sharp spray of the hi-hats, but just as much in the hypnotic play of all those subtle elements that are less obvious: The spiraling vortex of melodies and acidic synthesizer departures creates a sonic texture of organic beauty that is reminiscent of the intricate perfection of nature down here on planet Earth -- clearly a signature element in Green Lake Project's unique space techno style. Altogether 11 tracks summarize what the mysterious duo has become well-known for at festivals and parties over the last years: Big productions for big emotions in front of big sound systems.

O'SHEA, MICHAEL Michael O'Shea LP
AllChival present a reissue of Michael O'Shea's self-titled album, originally released on Wire's Dome Records imprint in 1982. Having sold his instruments to fund a nomadic 1970s lifestyle, eccentric Irish experimentalist Michael O'Shea was forced to create his own handmade answer to the sitars and zelochords he'd become accustomed to playing on his travels around the globe. Using an old door, 17 strings, chopsticks and combining them with phasers, echo units and amplification, the new device was to become his signature sound, mixing Irish folk influences with Asian and North African sounds in a mesmerizing and soulful new way. Born in Northern Ireland but raised in the Republic, O'Shea was keen to travel and escape the troubles of his home. Wandering throughout Europe and the Middle East, O'Shea found himself living and working in Bangladesh in the mid-Seventies where he learned to play sitar. A later period spent busking in France accompanied on zelochord by Algerian musician Kris Hosylan Harp led to O'Shea's idea of combining both instruments as a homebuilt instrument -- Mo Cara (Irish for "My Friend"). A combination of dulcimer, zelochord, and sitar, O'Shea would play it with a pair of chopsticks, striking the strings softly using Irish folk rhythms mixed with the rich, nostalgic sounds of the many Asian artists he'd encountered on his travels. Perfecting the instrument on the streets, there were further spells spent busking in the underground stations and cafes of London's West End and Covent Garden. His work with Rick Wakeman never saw the light of day but O'Shea's contact with the world of post-punk London ensured his name would live on. Introduced to Wire's Bruce Gilbert and Graham Lewis via cartoonist Tom Johnston, O'Shea eventually acquiesced to an open invite to record at their studio. Turning up unannounced in the summer of 1981 the LP was recorded in a day in the legendary Blackwing Studios and released on Dome the year after. The first side features the fifteen-minute masterpiece "No Journeys End" with the B side featuring more input from Wire in processing the Mo Chara sound. After an aborted LP with The The's Matt Johnson the following year, O'Shea quietly disappeared from the formal recording world and his brief but unique contribution to the music world came to a sad end with O'Shea's passing in 1991. Remastered and reissued with the approval of both Dome and his surviving siblings.

ROSENBOOM, DAVID Brainwave Music 2LP
Black Truffle present the first ever vinyl reissue of David Rosenboom's legendary Brainwave Music, originally released on A.R.C. Records in 1975. This is an expanded double-LP edition with over 40 minutes of additional contemporaneous material. Pioneer of live electronics, innovator in music education, collaborator with artists as diverse as Jon Hassell, Jacqueline Humbert, Terry Riley, and Anthony Braxton, Rosenboom is renowned for his ground-breaking experiments with the use of brain biofeedback to control live electronic systems. Each of the three pieces that make up the original Brainwave Music LP integrates biofeedback with musical technology in different ways. In the side-long "Portable Gold and Philosophers' Stones", four performers have electrodes and monitoring devices attached to their bodies to receive information about brainwaves, temperature, and galvanic skin response. This information is analyzed and fed into a complex set of frequency dividers and filters, manned by Rosenboom, but essentially played by each of the performers through their psychophysiological responses. The result is a slowly unfolding web of filtered electronic tones over a tanpura-esque fundamental, possessing the unhurried, stately grandeur of an electronic raga. In "Chilean Drought", three different variations of a text about a drought in Chile, read by a different voice in a different style, are associated with the beta, alpha, and theta brainwave bands. Alongside an insistent piano accompaniment, three constantly shifting vocal recordings are controlled by the relative preponderance of each of the brainwave bands in the soloist. "Piano Etude I (Alpha)", the earliest piece included here, is based on research into the link between alpha brain wave production and the execution of repetitive motor tasks. As Rosenboom plays a very rapid, incessantly repeated pattern in both hands, two filters controlled by monitoring his brainwaves process the piano sound, moving gradually higher in frequency as the average alpha amplitude increases. For this reissue, the original LP is supplemented with an additional LP containing an unreleased 1977 live recording of Rosenboom's "On Being Invisible", in which the composer himself performs on an array of electronics that are fed information from his brainwaves. Stretching out over 40 minutes, the piece begins in similar territory to "Portable Gold and Philosophers' Stones" but eventually becomes far wilder, building up to pointillistic bleeps and dense layers of electronic fizz that unexpectedly cut to near-silence. As Rosenboom explains, the piece creates a situation in which the "performer's active imaginative listening became one of the ways to play their instrument, as well as an active agent in how self-organizing musical forms might emerge." Includes archival images and new notes from the composer. Gatefold sleeve design by Lasse Marhaug. Mastered by David Rosenboom from the original analog tape masters. Cut by Rashad Becker at Dubplates & Mastering, Berlin.

ICE BATHS Decadent Sprinter EP LP
Decadent Sprinter a bizarre and yet comforting scene. You feel you understand and know what is happening, a connection to the movements. But in reality, you don't exist to them and in their world, you are just another adoring spectator. Recorded in the confines of industrial North Greenwich with producer Euan Hinshelwood in his analog tape studio, Ice Baths present four new pieces. Stitched together with ambient, droning noise -- the ghosts of their predecessors -- a haunting reminder that beneath the sometimes sunny exterior of the songs lies a constant anxiety in the songwriting and performance. "We spent so long on the album process, we really wanted to get back into the studio as soon as possible and write/record something new, without giving ourselves too much time to ruminate on external input -- a reset of our senses and the perfect way to bridge the divide between albums." Released on one-sided 12" vinyl because the band wanted the EP to have a "seamless unbroken listening experience". Housed in a die-cut black outer sleeve and color inner sleeve.

ALLIEN, ELLEN Alientronic CD
From beyond our universe, the Alientronic invasion arrives on Planet Earth. One of the great ambassadors of Berlin techno, Ellen Allien presents her brand new album Alientronic. This is a body of work rooted in the city where it was recorded, Ellen's home and the place where she discovered techno sparking a love affair which will burn for infinity. Alientronic was recorded during the cold winter months in Berlin at the end of 2018, a time when creativity hits a peak in the city. Sub-zero temperatures and dark nights keep the artists locked away indoors, finding time and space to journey inwards and tap into the deepest recesses of their creative energy. Alientronic represents an artist who is brimming with ideas, years of experience breathe life into Ellen's work -- it's refined, yet liberated, informed by the past but very much looking to the future. Ellen disseminates classic techno and acid tropes through her visionary lens, vocals are looped and warped, tough beats slam down as stirring pads coax you into an emotive realm and you're privy to a spellbinding other world full of mysterious exotic allure. Is it a hallucination or are the electro-terrestrials already here among us?

SPECHTL, ANDREAS Strategies CD
"They say that the avant-garde moves faster than light and therefore has to travel under cover of darkness, flying blind, destination unknown. Little of today's realpolitik-related gloom casts its shadow over Strategies, the new album by restless avant-garde auteur Andreas Spechtl. On the contrary. Whereas the two preceding albums Sleep and Thinking About Tomorrow (And How To Build It) (BB 278CD/LP, 2017) documented quietly intimate, personal journeys along the margins of Europe or Iran, casting a skeptical eye on neoteric political shifts, Strategies is an altogether more explosive affair, buzzing with beats, effervescent with the energy of techno, dance, a celebration of resistance. The sense of unease engendered by global politics has given way to a new sense of self, to new strategies, an eagerness to escape into ecstasy, madness, anarchy. Right from the word go, as the first melodies take shape, as the first lines unfold, even as quiet, intimate moments from prior recordings linger on, a piano fades away, a saxophone passes by and then the beats kick in -- an almost anthemic 'yes, we will change the world/because we've done so/many times before' sets the euphoric tone for the rest of the album. And oh, the voice; following its disappearing act on the previous discs, it returns here on a wave of charming dandyism, dancing, screaming, whispering, moaning, striding unwaveringly, casually, aggressively, through techno, tribal and disco beats, scanning lyrics whose palpable, newly-gained coolness might just be a universal antidote against the world's political vacuum. It is also a voice which suddenly switches to Spanish on 'When We Were Young,' joined by Anna Seghers as a ghostly witness. The album was written in Santiago de Querétaro, not far from Mexico City. It was crafted mostly on a modular system and two synthesizers, without VST or digital equipment, the computer downgraded to the status of a mere multitrack recording device. Andreas Spechtl appears to have arrived at the core of his own self, all new, as if he had rewired himself amongst all the modules -- without having even tried to find himself, yet discovering someone in the circuits who had almost been forgotten or would be forgotten again, someone who only existed right there. With the philosophical and musical activism on Strategies he offers us the clearest, most readable signs pointing into the future." --Thomas Köck, January 2019.

THEE OH SEES Hounds Of Foggy Notion LP
LP version. "'Thee Hounds of Foggy Notion / Live Performances Sans Stages And Whatnots With Thee Oh Sees (2008), is a film we made just over a decade ago, and this record is the soundtrack. I loved making it, and I love all that were involved. I'm honestly blissed-out proud to hear over the years that it somehow is loved by so many others, too. I first met John Dwyer on Flag Day. I was blown away by a trio of roving Coachwhips guerrilla street shows that climaxed at the scenic vista parking lot high above San Francisco atop Mt. Sutro. Amongst the gathered uninitiated hordes of souvenir sweatshirt selling families, and puzzled elderly global tourist translators, and a white weirdo tuxedo wedding party, was the sonic corruption of the Coachwhips... I'm certain that this exact event was the idea seed for Thee Hounds Of Foggy Notion, and that it saved my life a little bit. When JPD asked me to consider making a video for Thee Oh Sees with the sole stipulation that he didn't want to do anything fake-y to playback, my head started swimming. What we mutually agreed upon was to essentially reprise Flag Day, and film Thee Oh Sees performing live, but not on stages. I rented a 15-passenger van, a generator, and the minimal cinematic equipment my trusted cinematographer friend James Wall deemed we needed. Everything sound wise was JPD territory and went through an ancient mixing board that Johnny had housed within a Samsonite suitcase. We ran all the plate mics from the drums, and the li'l pedestal mics from the amps through this old mixer, and we all believed that all would be well and swell.' --Brian Lee Hughes"

VA Elaste Volume 04 2LP
2019 repress; Double LP version. "In this compilation I am inaugurating a style: vintage futurism. The best metaphor for this genre is Charanjit Singh's 1982 album Ten Ragas to a Disco Beat, in which he created a sound which mirrors, but more importantly pre-dates, the first acid-house record by five years. It is no novelty record, but truly captures the hypnotic potential of acid/house music. It became my key track for Elaste Volume 04. Previous incarnations of Elaste have aimed to catch the spirit of the late '70s Italian cosmic discotheque, a place where the history of DJing was rewritten. For this latest installment, I was most intrigued by weird of-the-time (or 'out-of' as the case turned out to be) electronic disco, a vast genre that brings together those progressive avant-garde tracks that were expanding the genres of house, disco, acid, new wave. I ultimately use Elaste as a vehicle to highlight those tracks that were ahead of their time. These legendary works range from 1978 to 1996, a wide spectrum of musical history in which some of the older tracks may sound modern, and newer ones may sound vintage. Many of these authentic back-to-the-aural-future moments were initial sparks for whole genres -- Larry Heard's Disco-D alias happened just before house music. Greg Wilson's 1984 project Equip was produced for a UK electro compilation, but never made the LP because it sounded too futuristic. Michael Rinder's 'Gluttony' can't be called disco any more -- not even post-disco. For Elaste Volume 4, we have built vintage futurism as a home for these ultramodern mavericks." --Dompteur MoonerArtists include: Charanjit Singh, C Cat Trance, Cybotron, Rinder & Lewis, Barbara Norris, Nad, Equip, Sandee, Disco D, and Dopplereffekt. BACALOV, LUIS Si Puo Fare... Amigo CD
At the time of the film's release only a 45rpm single of this original soundtrack was issued which contained the song "Can Be Done", with lyrics by Sergio Bardotti and sung by Rocky Roberts (in 1966, Luis Bacalov had already collaborated with Roberts, performer of the main theme from the highly successful 2012 western movie Django). Only in 1995, Point Records released a CD which contained the instrumental score coupled with the OST from Il Grande Duello. For this issue, Digitmovies' new digitally restored and remastered record, the label had access to the mono master tapes of the recording session which gave them the chance to discover some unreleased takes which we have assembled in a nearly eight-minute suite. In addition, a special bonus track features the very rare stereo-mixed version of the original 45rpm single song. Luis Bacalov succeeds in representing in his music the whole sentimental side of the plot (the friendship between the corpulent, but good-hearted Thompson and the child Chip) by writing a sweet and cheerful main theme that is introduced in the opening credits in a pop key and with a little Bacharach flavor called "Can Be Done", sung by Rocky Roberts and accompanied by a children's choir. This theme is reprised with orchestral variations sometimes dramatically, sometimes in an epic western context with the use of the harmonica of the great Franco De Gemini and alternated with saloon as well as instrumental and choir folk music. This CD is dedicated to all the fans of the mythic Bud Spencer, of the Italian Western, and the music art of the Academy Award winner Luis Bacalov.

PICCIONI, PIERO La Citta Prigioniera CD
Digitmovies present a reissue of Piero Piccioni's original soundtrack for La Citta' Prigioniera, originally released in 1962. Piccioni, one of the colossal names of international film music, composed this symphonic OST in the early '60s where gloomy and tense passages frequently recur to perfectly describe the dramatic situation in Athens during the Second World War. The author alternates a melancholic love theme that timidly emerges to contrast with suspense music and exciting battle pieces, all enriched with Greek folk music. Originally C.A.M. released a vinyl LP containing fifteen tracks in mono and an EP single with two tracks in mono. In 1991, the same material was re-released for the first time on CD in the series C.A.M.'s Soundtrack Encyclopedia with audio filtered in Dolby Surround. For Digitmovies' CD, the label was able to use a first-generation master tape with the LP recording along with the mono master tapes from the original recording session, discovering almost forty minutes of previously unreleased material, all specially restored.

NOT GLASS Forma LP
Not Glass is the debut collaboration between Alessio Natalizia (Not Waving) and his longtime correspondent Dimitris Papadatos (Jay Glass Dubs), paying tribute to Latin and Greek authors Ovid and Heraclitus in a suite of dramatic electronics and cryptic rhythms comparable to a theatrical soundtrack. Knowingly, ironically pretentious, yet serious with it, Forma is the result of years of daily Facebook chats between the London and Athens-based artists where they cemented the album's concept around key quotes by the legendary poet/philosophers, who hail from their respective homelands of Italy and Greece. The results are in effect a spellbinding attempt to transmute those notions within the collaborative, contemporary framework of their music, using patented palettes of hardware, vocals, and FX to render and reflect core classical mythological and philosophical ideas about drama, love, metaphysics, cosmology and the "unity of opposites". On this timeless plane, Natalizia and Papadatos both step outside of themselves to find "what opposes unites", spaciously consolidating their typical, yet contrasting, rhythm-driven approaches in a reverberant, often beatless sphere of exploration. Removed from their usual handrails, the artists operate at their most open-ended and subtly suggestive, amorphously shapeshifting from gloaming shadow plays of synth and keys to investigate arcane percussive impulses and iridescent ambient whorls. The result is a perfect, finely shaded marriage of their mutually esoteric, outsider Southern European energies, which intuitively acknowledges and inhabits the paradoxes of their respective styles. The illusively static yet mercurial ebb-and-flow of the atmospheric intro "Fallite Fallentes" sets the scene, where "Dum Loquor, Hora Fugit" invokes a viscous but brittle tangle of wide bass and pointillist rhythms beside a stately cello vignette "Ludicrum" that recalls aspects of Scott Walker's mystic charm "Soused". The rapid arps and slow moving, glassy pads of "Pauper Ubique Iacet" conjure a sublime tension that becomes diffused into the cavernous, hollow dub dread of "Ut Ameris, Amabilis Esto", possessed with its throaty, processed vocal, and the lonely strings and plasmic electronics of "Forma Bonum Fragile Est" connotes a psychedelic coming-to-terms with their artistic/philosophic duality. Mastered and cut at Dubplates & Mastering, Berlin. Edition of 500.

SATIN JACKETS Solar Nights CD
Solar Nights is the long-awaited second album from German nu-disco star Tim Bernhardt, aka Satin Jackets. Released on Eskimo Recordings Solar Nights follows on from Bernhardt's critically acclaimed, and Gold certified, debut Panorama Pacifico (ESK 507583/ ESK 507585, 2016) and features 14 tracks of smooth disco and leftfield pop sounds with guest appearances from the likes of Future Classic's Panama, David Harks, Niya Wells, Emma Brammer, and Anduze. The global success of Panorama Pacifico has seen Bernhardt coaxed out from his remote studio in one of Germany's ancient forests to play to fans across the world, from South Korea to Mexico and beyond, experiences that inspired both the album itself and its title, Solar Nights. In recent years the world's become smaller, a more inter-connected place. It can be dark and cold here, with snow all around, and the next day I can be playing to people on a beach. Somewhere on the planet it's always daytime or summer, but beyond that day and night just blend into each other these days," Tim explains. "We have daytime discos so you can go and party while the sun is still high in the sky, and you can go and hit the gym at night. Be it day or night, Satin Jackets is your soundtrack." And what a soundtrack it is, from the first chords of opening 'Welcome Back' it's clear we're in safe hands here, the warm pads, delicate guitars and pianos providing the perfect introduction to the album. Solar Nights takes everything we loved from Panorama Pacifico and polishes it to an ultra-high sheen. And in an age when rough and raw production is seen as an easy shorthand for authenticity, Tim's love of über-smooth production has made him an unlikely iconoclast, producing music that reflects the glamour and glitz of '70s Manhattan, artfully updated for the 21st century.

LOWE, ALLEN An Avant Garde of Our Own: Disconnected Works 1980-2018 8CD BOX
Saxophonist/guitarist/composer/music historian/ provocateur Allen Lowe spans the history of jazz in his music in a way that few besides Jaki Byard, Beaver Harris, Steven Bernstein, and Air have ever done, intertwining blues, early jazz, bebop, and the avant-garde. A prolific composer who was incorporating American roots music into his jazz decades before it was hip, he has led project bands featuring a broad array of jazz greats ranging from Doc Cheatham, Randy Sandke, Joe Albany, Don Byron, Ken Peplowski, and Percy France to Matthew Shipp, Julius Hemphill, Marc Ribot, Roswell Rudd, David Murray, Gary Bartz, Nels Cline, Ray Anderson, DJ Logic, Kalaparusha Maurice McIntyre, and Hamiet Bluiett. With two notable but out-of-print exceptions, most of his work has been released on his own Constant Sorrow label. ESP-Disk' has long admired his work and is happy to partner with him on the career-spanning An Avant Garde Of Our Own: Disconnected Works 1980-2018, which consists of four CDs (3-6) of previously unreleased material and four thematically arranged CDs (1-2, 7-8) collecting a wide variety of material that was mostly previously -- but not widely -- available.

ANCIENT POOLS Cosine LP
"Shimmering dream pop readymades are the heart of Cosine, the debut release by Ancient Pools (originally a cassette, and now an LP). Ancient Pools are a duo (Anna Jeter and Kevin Christopher), recently relocated from Olympia to Portland, where Kevin was offered a good set-up at a new studio. Anna is from Pensacola, FL, where she was in a folk-tinged pop band called 100 Watt Horse. Kevin remains the bassist for a more rockist Northwest quartet called Oh, Rose. But Ancient Pools, with its intimate, electronics-dappled approach to minimalist pop-tones is a whole different thing. The songs began gestation after Anna exiled herself to the woods of North Carolina for a summer, before moving to Olympia, where she met Kevin. They wrote the second half of the album in collaboration, but there's no obvious demarcation between the halves. Gently struck drums and quiet strings emerge through a hazy wave of vocals and synth that keep reminding me of the dreamy grace exuded by the duo version of Yo La Tengo, right about the time Georgia started singing. The effect of listening to Cosine on repeat (which actually resembles its creation process in certain ways) is like sinking into sweet cloud of sound, baked by the sun, with sounds of nature piping themselves into your system on a subliminal level. Quite a magnificent glide." --Byron Coley, 2019.

SPIRAL WAVE NOMADS Spiral Wave Nomads LP
"The debut LP by Spiral Wave Nomads introduces a new psych duo comprised of two musicians with active histories inside the New England sub underground. Guitarist Eric Hardiman is one of the many hardened string wranglers for Albany's legendary Burnt Hills, as well as the proprietor of the Tape Drift label and half of the prolific experimental unit, Century Plants. Drummer Michael Kiefer is best known as a member of Myty Konkeror and the exquisite trio that emerged from them -- More Klementines, whose eponymous album (2018) has made brains tingle all around the globe. The Spiral Wave Nomads set is a lovely sprawl of electric guitar improv (aided in spots by bass, sitar and double-tracked guitar) mixed with elegantly tumbling drum work, guaranteed to illuminate many tunnels of spiraling trip-time. Parts of the album may momentarily recall Rangda at their most lysergic, but the crossed-eyed way the two players have of busting up and hanging on to shards of melody and rhythm is all their own. If you liked the More Klementines album, I dare say you'll like this as well. But it's in a slightly different bag as well. Vibrationally consonant without resorting to apery. A beautiful sonic spread." --Byron Coley, 2019 Edition of 250.

FAKI, LEN Robot Evolution Remixes 2x12"
Len Faki's Robot Evolution Remixes is a special treat, rallying up some top-notch producers from Figure's extended circle. In a massive remix package, these artists have compiled singular takes on Faki's "Robot Evolution" from the label's recent anniversary compilation Figure 100 (FIGURE 100LP, 2018). Benjamin Damage manages to mine the original track for its raw essence, harnessing a rough and lively -- yet streamlined -- high-energy track. The clever rework by Charlotte de Witte shows off her deeper side, providing a submerged feel while not losing focus on the floor, sprinkling in the acid stab for good measure. Emika's creative interpretation pairs her bread and butter (pulsing sub-bass and battering grime-style syntharps) with a completely new vocal dub. Her fresh fusion of genre-specific tropes serves as a delightful surprise and is one to make heads turn. Jensen Interceptor turns in exactly the kind of fast-moving, tightly grooving, no-nonsense electro that one has come to expect from the prolific producer, straight up and honest, a true Drexciyan descendant. Galloping and hopping, it's the Midnight Operator-remix that races along at breakneck speed yet luckily offers some great breakdown moments to catch one's breath before hammering it home on this stuttering full-throttle ride. Creativity abounds, and this package proves a worthy successor to the original track, and has helped the robot evolve all of its model's specific features.

CHMMR Try New Things LP
Following his debut Auto (FP 013CD/LP, 2017), Chmmr delivers Try New Things, a new collection of music to inspire half an hour. The sophomore album features (in order of appearance): prefab naiveté, idle saturdays in early fall, inaccurate weather reports, lead arias for courtship, a planet, romantic stage pianos, an ode, and a post-LAN party mood. All in all a fitting backdrop for any function that's about opening oneself up, be that in solitude or in good company. This record is meant as an imperative to the listener: try new things. One may regret it; it might backfire. Do it anyway. Obfuscated behind his Chmmr moniker is Even Brenden, whose warped debut made it into this world via Norwegian psych-disco label Luna Flicks in 2010. The record became somewhat of a sought-after item, and after making pit stops at Relish and Dødpop as well as remixes for Prins Thomas and Skatebård, he ended up with the Full Pupp label in 2014, generating a string of singles that culminated in the highly praised full-length Auto in 2017.

Sessions began on the full moon, 25th August in the heart of the New Forest deep in Dorset, the hallowed home of '90s doom legends Electric Wizard folklore, marking Mark's fourth time in both bands at Chuckalumba. John Stephens, operating the living museum of antique analog and valve-driven studio gear and tape machines captured a world of demons and possessions. A banshee wail of woeful siren song weaving a sinister world of horror doom, through waves of burgeoning fuzz and hell-sent thunder on the drum kit. Realizing the magnitude of what they had committed to tape, Dead Witches began to seek Doug Shearer, wizard of mastering and the final member in the coven, his previous also including Dopethrone and Let Us Prey.

KIRBY, LEYLAND When We Parted My Heart Wanted To Die 2LP
2019 restock, last copies... Originally released in 2009. It's a prescient hauntological elegy somewhere between Vangelis' Bladerunner OST (1982), Lynch and Badalamenti's Twin Peaks score, Erik Satie's solo Piano works, William Basinski's gradual tape decompositions, and James Ferraro's washed out visions. Back in 2009, James Leyland Kirby explained: "Here we stand, twenty years on from the first CD, and our optimism has been gradually eroded away collectively. 'Tomorrows World' never came. We are lost and isolated, many of us living our lives through social networks as we try to make sense of it all, becoming voyeurs not active participants. Documenting everything. No Mystery. Everything laid bare for all to see." A decade later, it could hardly have been more prescient. It's with this pessimistic sense of being that Kirby constructed these incredible pieces, creating a sequence of music designed to overwhelm and absorb, affecting our sense of time and place by tracing and retracing musical steps into a blur, re-using the same motifs with incremental differences, trapped in our own feedback loops of lost emotion. On this long double album, James Leyland Kirby once again acts as a spiritual bridge, holding fast against the perceived current of time and culture in order to afford a slow, lingering gaze on its ambiguous, ever-shifting ripples and eddies. Like staring at a body of gently moving water, the effect is strangely soothing and meditative, encouraging immersed reflection and dilated focus...

KIRBY, LEYLAND Sadly, The Future Is No Longer What It Was 2LP
2019 restock, last copies. Originally released in 2009. The second part of Leyland Kirby's uniquely prescient dark ambient masterstroke, Sadly, The Future Is No Longer What It Was (2009) finds the listener returning to Kirby's draughty corridors of processed 78s and midnight keyboard meditations is a sublime, haunting experience like no other. The listener can read his melancholic diagnosis of capitalist malaise, deferred futurism and thwarted social utopianism as a genuinely uncanny foresight of what has played out in contemporary society, in an age when Facebook and Twitter have become an all-encompassing filter for daily life and effectively assuaged the rich analog ambiguity of collectivism in favor of cold, hard, binary politics and reflexive, unthinking emotional responses. Especially in the wake of Mark Fisher's tragic passing earlier in 2017, Kirby's hauntological sentiments, embedded quite literally in titles such as "When Did Our Dreams And Futures Drift So Far Apart", and figuratively perfused through its stark negative space, now feel to resonate stronger than ever; using shared echoes of the hive mind such as classic film scores from Vangelis and Lynch/Badalmenti -- both quite literally omnipresent in imminent sequels right now -- as cues for sorrowful elegies and meditations which aesthetically resonate as much with Deathprod's liminal scapes, as a sort of mildewed modern classical flocking to Satie's tasteful ambient wallpaper. Yet it's not all doom and gloom. There's a sense of underlying sense of resilience, of resistance to Kirby's hushed, ribboning expressions which flows with a considerate pathos and open-ended emotional curiosity which belies the narcissistic reaffirmations of social media's echo chambers and dialectic cul-de-sacs, quietly striving to wrench something beautiful and affective from the clutches of a manipulative mainstream.

KIRBY, LEYLAND Memories Live Longer Than Dreams 2LP
2019 restock, last copies... Originally released in 2009. The third of the three 2LP editions in James Leyland Kirby's When We Parted My Heart Wanted To Die series. The synthetic luster of Memories Live Longer Than Dreams already appeared cracked and damaged the first time around, and in 2017 its phosphorescent glow remains a beacon of shelter for contemplation and secluded mind-drift, offering a surreal, nostalgic night-light to the gloomy and confused world it diagnosed and predicted nearly ten years ago. Written during James Leyland Kirby's forlorn purgatorial years spent in Berlin during the period which shaped the modern world as we know it -- a time when global financial institutions collapsed, YouTube's all-encompassing archive was beginning to spill over, and Facebook and Twitter were starting to enmesh the entire planet -- this final instalment finds Kirby channeling osmotically absorbed visions of the future, as spelt out by Vangelis, Lynch and Badalamenti, Eno, and Kirby's own The Caretaker alter ego, into a waking dream sequence of quietly anguished sound poems for the contemporary echo chamber, relinquishing a traversal of the hive mind's private fears and shared nightmares rendered in ghostly scrolls of synth noise and sweepingly emotive cinematic gestures. It effectively diagnoses a sort of cultural malaise that was perhaps embryonic in 2009, as the golden age of dance/pop form and optimism which resulted in radical acts such as V/Vm and the Ccru was now left shimmering in the rearview, with the momentous energy of its accumulated, independent scenes being diffused into institutions or calcifying into hyper commercialism, leaving little or no room for ambiguity, irony or subversively socialist thought within its increasingly binary wake; a wake which has now bifurcated into extreme left and right-leaning politics with a gulf of misunderstanding in between. Keening and reeling away his own thoughts on the matter in that inter-zone of negative space, Kirby draws on ever tightening coils of cultural feedback loops and the infidelity of memory to parse, process, and secrete a slow, plasmic ooze of melancholic musical form that perhaps best represents the feelings of our age; of our shared future occluded by an inglorious or illusive past that promised much, yet never paid up.

MYTHOLOGEN Antisocial Background Music 2017-2019 LP
When you put on the first track on the album Antisocial Background 2017-2019 by Mythologen your likely to think: "this is THAT kind of an album", and feel happy with that. But Mythologen, aka Alexander Palmestål, is not "THAT" kind of an artist and this album reflects his broad musical background. It spans from Japan to USA, from the '70s to the '00s and from cold concrete floors to fluffy cotton clouds. Palmestål, with a background in bands such as Pistol Disco and Iberia, now releases his second full-length album on Höga Nord Rekords. The album is a play with emotions and genres, with unexpected meetings between major and minor keys and is a collection of tracks where jungle, electro, house, synth, and big beat are deconstructed and put together as relevant contemporary dance music. The production on Antisocial Background sometimes sound like a more electronic version of Boredoms but most of the time it puts the listener on the British Isles and in the '90s. Palmestål pays respect to his masters but he is not in any way too careful with their legacy and let, just as on his self-titled debut album (HNR 009LP, 2017), influences from the 1970s and 80s Nigeria and Soweto.

VON SPAR Streetlife (5th Anniversary Reissue White Vinyl) LP
Von Spar celebrate the fifth anniversary of their groundbreaking 2014 album, Streetlife, with a reissue LP edition pressed onto 140 gram white vinyl. Precarious bon vivants, gifted musicians, radical guys -- Von Spar are many things, but above all, they are one of the most amazing bands in the realms that the British music press once baptized as krautrock. Sebastian Blume, Jan Philipp Janzen, Christopher Marquez, and Phillip Tielsch have in past been praised even more than the revenants of the genre (in 2012, together with Stephen Malkmus, before the watering eyes of Can founding members Irmin Schmidt and Jaki Liebezeit, they provided a reinterpretation of the album Ege Bamyasi at the Cologne Weekend Festival) -- even if the four were inspired equally by techno, synthpop, noise, post-punk, and new music. "The concept of the collective Von Spar seems to be to torpedo listeners' expectations from album to album," wrote the German newspaper TAZ about their album Foreigner (2010). And once again, much is new on Streetlife. Four of the eight pieces were recorded with the Canadian singer Chris Cummings, aka Marker Starling (formerly Mantler), whose fragile voice at moments recalls that of the great communist and musician Robert Wyatt. Other pieces feature the voice of Ada (Pampa Records) and of Scout Niblett (Drag City), for whom Jan Philipp Janzen has played drums on various tours (as he has for the likes of Owen Pallett and The Field). Streetlife has emerged as a heterogeneous album ranging from melodic piano disco ("Chain Of Command"), to tripped-out soundscapes ("Hearts Fear"), to grandiose soft rock ("Try Though We Might"). One might call it music for a better world, if that didn't sound so lofty. Yet Von Spar is not at all lofty, they are wide awake. This is not escapism, but life in the streets. And that's how they live it.

GUSGUS Arabian Horse 2LP
2019 repress; gatefold 2LP version. Includes download code. Iceland's GusGus graces Kompakt with a second album, after their enigmatic debut for the label 24/7, which earned the trio much acclaim thanks to its conceptual rigidity and pure glamour. Conceived solely with the help of two precious Doepfer modular systems and Daniel August's all-pervasive vocals, it could easily have been characterized as GusGus' unofficial live album. For Arabian Horse, their seventh studio album, President Bongo, Biggi Veira and Daniel August set up a makeshift studio in a summer cottage in the depths of the lava field. Secluded in silence and beauty, they produced something that really showcases GusGus' versatility and stunning songwriting ability. A vast array of illustrious guest musicians and singers abound on these powerful new songs. Most prominently, this album features the long-awaited return of former band member and gifted vocalist Urður "Earth" Hákonardóttir, who appears on three songs. Högni Elisson of the band Hjaltalin lends his voice to some of the album's most memorable and deepest moments. Samúel Jón Samúelsson contributes the elevating, goosebump-inducing string arrangements and David Thor Jonsson contributes accordion and the banjo. Even an un-named gypsy combo leaves their mark here. Compared to GusGus' stripped-down predecessor for Kompakt, this album is much more in-your-face -- the songs brim with big gestures, enthralling hooks, pop and soul. Take the powerful schaffel anthem "Deep Inside," which makes use of big room chords, a ferocious bass line and a vocal duel, or "Within You," where strings converge with breathtaking vocals and an addictive techno bass kick. GusGus retrace their original influences, creating an album that recalls a forgotten period of early '90s dance pop (think The Beloved), classic house music and urban soul à la Massive Attack. But make no mistake, Arabian Horse does not sound like pure retro in any way. It's deeply rooted in the sound of today, backed by one of the most state-of-the-art quality productions Kompakt has released to date. Still need a tag? Why not: Icelandic hi-tech soul.

"The songs follow no rules. There are no reference points. It's utterly original. You type out words like Patti Smith or The Slits but that's lazy old man thinking." --John RobbWhen John Robb saw Glove (from Liverpool) play a year ago he was blown away. "It's impossible to see anything as vibrant or totally original as this but Glove are captivating, fiercely intelligent and can turn any room into a physical and mental hoe down. With the same sort of poetic skree as primetime Patti Smith that makes you think and feel alive and minimalist stripped down music played on one bass and one tom they deliver an invigorating set of emotions and I knew I had to release this their debut EP which I also produced." Glove is collaboration between artists SloSilver and Stephanie Finegan. It flowed forth that now is the time for Glove. And so, from one sleepy jam, 12 songs were born."When you have been to thousands of gigs but still retain the hunger for the new, a rare WTF moment is worth a million dollars. Every now and then, at one of these music showcase events, you see band that changes your life. Again. A mesmerising, talismanic piece of magic that is beyond. Glove is that band. Two wild painted women who turn music inside out and reinvent the wheel. Stunning. We walk into the back room of one pub to see our first band and our minds are blown by Glove -- nothing is going to match these two wired women who are oozing art, poetry and a musical brilliance that sets your mind racing and your heart pounding. Cosmo Vitelli hasn't slept since 1973. Instead, he's replaced slumber with the tireless exploration of electronic music, sharing his finds as an accomplished DJ and label manager as well as an esteemed producer, with heaps of records, remixes, and edits under his belt. With his upcoming two-part LP release on Malka Tuti, Cosmo brings forward his more diverse and somehow mature musical side, combining elements of post-punk, krautrock, electronica, and pop on this first of two four-track records. The songs on the LP transcend style and genre. They manage to hold and playfully sustain an idea that echoes throughout them all -- a musical "saying" as well as a personal life experience, and they reflect Cosmo's prolific studio work of the past two years since he moved to Berlin. On the opening song "A Brand New City" he collaborates with longtime friend Julienne Dessagne (aka Fantastic Twins). Dessagne's vocals cut through the quirky and addictive percussion groove and synth sequence, leading to a strong emotional melancholic melodic catharsis. On the following two songs, "Groupe Surdose" and "Die Alraune", you'll find Cosmo collaborating with Sebastian Lee Philipp (of Die Wilde Jagd fame) to show his more post-rock/krautrock side. "Groupe Surdose" is an instant classic slow burning dance floor krautrock tune while in "Die Alruane" you find poetic German lyrics sung by Lee-Philipp on top of organic grooves, guitars, and an epic saxophone line that together create a distinctive highlight for the record. The closing track "Kuldip" is the curve ball of them all, sealing the first part of his album with a Mediterranean mid-tempo dance tune for the selectors and the Middle-Eastern inspired electro aficionados. 180 gram vinyl.

TAPAN Ghana 12"
Tapan present their first release since their debut album Europa (MALKA 002LP, 2018). They show their "dancier" side with two cuts: "The Beast" (featuring Serbian musician Jan Nemecek) and "Ghana". Perhaps industrial-inspired, tribal-trance is the closest description, and yet somehow after listening to the tracks it feels like trying to put it in "a box" just don't do justice. Both tracks are remixed by Russian duo Odopt who deliver an out-worldly IDM monster of a remix to "The Beast", and Italian-Belgian duo Front De Cadeaux make "Ghana" even slower, adding more percussive grooves.

RAINER VEIL Vanity 2LP
After a five-year pause for breath, last releasing in 2014, Rainer Veil return with their debut full-length for Modern Love; an immersive, kinematic tumble through electronic forms from hyper trance to tape dub experiments and loose polyrhythms -- a summoning of 'ardcore spirits in flux. A hypnotic sound world tempered by weighty bass and angular construction, Vanity marks a breaking away from the binds of overthinking, an embrace of imperfection. It's a brighter set of tracks then anything we've heard from Rainer Veil before, discarding the foggy filters and guitar pedals that were the signature of their first two EPs in pursuit of a more loose-limbed and swung ideal. Opening on the skeletal trance vapor-trail "Sim Screen" and the agitated "Repatterning", you head into a ferociously asymmetric warehouse swerve "In Gold Mills" conjuring an uncanny, nighttime vision of suburban bass riddled with tension and bliss. "Shallows" retreats through isolation dub, echoing "Change Is Never Easy", a re-worked house template fractured to its bare percussive core, while "FM2" entwines a double helix of DX7 patches with a heart wrench, and "Gauze" dismantles a mosaic of Kwaito patterns, buried under a haze of smoke. Tracing rapidly mutating electronic forms, from ringtone hooks to latinate rhythms and Razor synth edits, Vanity explores an instinctive swell of ideas and influences in perpetual and unstoppable forward motion, a sequence of flash frames captured and distilled for posterity. RIYL: Photek, Caterina Barbieri, SND, Lee Gamble, Gábor Lázár. Mastered and Cut at Dubplates & Mastering, Berlin. Edition of 500.

VA Outro Tempo II: Electronic And Contemporary Music From Brazil, 1984-1996 2LP
Outro Tempo II: Electronic and Contemporary Music from Brazil, 1984-1996 is the second instalment of Music From Memory's Brazilian series. This volume picks up where the first Outro Tempo (MFM 016CD/LP, 2017) left off, shedding light on a new wave of experimentalism that emerged in Brazil in the late 1980s and 1990s. The twenty tracks collected uncover another area of Brazilian music that looked to the future for inspiration. This time it drifts beyond the rainforest and into the pulsating heart of Brazil's great cities, where it meets a generation of young artists eager to radically change the face of contemporary Brazilian music. In Outro Tempo II, the avant-garde and pop worlds meld in a haze of percussion and electronics. It presents another uncompromising and magnetic reinterpretation of the limits of Brazilian music. Outro Tempo II is compiled again by John Gómez and features original artwork by Alice Quaresma. Features May East, Dequinha E Zaba, Oharaska, Fausto Fawcett, R. H. Jackson, Edson Natale, Akira S, Low Key Hackers, Chance, Jorge Degas & Marcelo Salazar, Priscilla Ermel, Voluntários Da Pátria, Angel's Breath, Tetê Espíndola, Nelson Angelo, Jorge Mello, Júlio Pimentel, and Tião Neto.

Detroit native Ryan Elliott has made a handful of weighty contributions to both Berghain and Ostgut Ton. A DJ's perspective has informed Elliott's own analog productions, with Paul's Horizon turning its focus toward deep and slick percussion. This is apparent from the get-go, with the title track's triangle/clap interplay, funky 5-6 kicks per bar, and bleary-eyed atmosphere. "Martinsville Morning" slows down into an understated sunrise groover, led by bassline, strings, and pads. "Grafton Road" turns up the pace again with gasps for hats, aggressive punctuating snares, and a modulating synth bubbling-up throughout.

UT Conviction LP
LP version. "Next in UT's reissue and remastered back catalog series, their first studio album Conviction, originally released in 1986. This 2019 remastered reissue will include song lyrics, photos of the band and an introduction by Stewart Lee. Radical rock group Ut was founded by Nina Canal, Jacqui Ham and Sally Young in 1978. Originating in the downtown NYC No Wave scene and inheritors of the collision between rock, free jazz and the avant-garde, the band exploded the rigidity of conventional rock, constructing songs through collective improvisation, swapping instruments and rotating the role of singer/director. Migrating to London in 1981, UT played with bands like The Fall and The Birthday Party and released music on its own label Out Records, including Live At The Venue in 1982, the UT EP in 1984, the Confidential 12-inch in 1985 and the LP Conviction in 1986. UT became a favorite of BBC's John Peel and recorded sessions for his show in '84, '85 and '87. Joining forces with Blast First in 1987, they released the live compilation album Early Live Life and then the highly critically acclaimed In Gut's House in 1988, which made the year's NME Top 50 Albums."

WRUHME, ROBAG Venq Tolep 2LP +7"
Double LP version includes 7" with two bonus tracks, postcard, and download. Robag Wruhme takes synthetic sounds and sampled noises, cuts them to fit, and turns them into beats without his music ever sounding pieced-together; every single percussive sound is a compact unit, bursting with melody. For Venq Tolep, his first album-length release on Pampa Records in eight years, Wruhme chooses to dig deeper, expanding the space of these elements. He finds beats inside the beats, opens them up further, discovers hooklines, harmonies and feels where he can dispense with rhythm entirely. From his first releases on Freude am Tanzen one could hear it, a light-footed sense of rhythm. Venq Tolep opens with two melodic, melancholic pieces: "Advent" sets one to dancing, while "Westfal" has the listener lying in the grass amid the buzzing heat and rustling wind, hearing the voice of Lysann Zander, with whom Wruhme has worked previously on projects including his album Thora Vukk (PAMPA 002CD, 2011). Hers is not the only familiar name on this album -- Sidsel Endresen and Bugge Wesseltoft have both appeared on releases from Wruhme's bootleg label. Here, they are featured on "Nata Alma," a laid-back club track. "Iklahx" and "Ak-Do 5" both possess a carefree percussiveness, while "Komalh" and "Ago Lades" prove that when Wruhme talks about techno, he means club music more akin to the elegance of London two-step, fueled by R&B/hip-hop and swingbeat, and far removed from the Belgian-Teutonic bunker sound. "Bézique Atout" is a reinterpretation of "Domino," a track from French producer Oxia which Wruhme remixed in 2017, stylishly making it his own. Two more familiar tracks are "Volta Copy," a version of his 2015 hit "Volta Cobby," minus the beat, but now propelled by arpeggios, and "Ende #2," like greetings received from around the world in a day, picks up where "Ende" from Thora Vukk leaves off. Title track "Venq Tolep" draws on all the album's various movements in four minutes and 18 seconds: the light, pensive mood, the subtle, driving rhythm, the ambient-sounding layers of synthesized strings and the percussive electric piano melody lines. Venq Tolep has a well-rounded sound, like an arch unfolding in space; that, of course, is the universe of Robag Wruhme. With Venq Tolep, Wruhme creates something extraordinary -- the album may speak the language of club music, but the music verges on feeling like songs. Is it techno pop? Pop techno? Pop ambient? Ambient pop?

TRIPLE NEGATIVE Precious Waste In Our Wake LP
Debut full-length from London-based three-piece originally hailing from New Zealand (Matthew Hyland), Germany (Anja Büchele), and Romania (Dennis Debitsev). Precious Waste In Our Wake (full title written nowhere: "The Fucking Terrible Receding Shapes, We Shed Precious Waste In Our Wake") is an endlessly beautiful, dense, and chaotic crawl through so many forms it can be difficult to ascertain what is actually at play here. Ostensibly a "rock" band carved from the same plank as previous outfits Philosophie Queen, The Mean Streaks, etc., Triple Negative have appeared in a somewhat complacent London with their wildly original blend of chaos shifting alongside the suggestion of a maelstrom of politics, spite, and humor. Bloodclaat Orange, Fatna Bent Lhoucine, The Associates, Aby Ngana Diop, Royal Trux, Brigitte Fontaine/Areski, and Babyfather are all somehow wished into the scenario, either suggestively, explicitly quoted or manifesting as some malformed degree of inspiration. Precious Waste features bloody-minded Schlagzeugspiel by Stephen Robinson (Aufgehoben) and Rohan P. Thomas (The Mean Streaks, Sigma Editions) with guest verses by Maria Callas/P.P. Pasolini, Marlene Dietrich, and actually existing urban foxes of Northeast and South London. Also contains "Destroyer", the first song written by Cameron Bain for The Mean Streaks (2000. complete lyric sheet: "Destroyer!"), followed immediately by Dr Moreau-style fusion of Herman Melville and Peter Perrett in glass-all-void "Immigrant Song". Also, bass sound of the miraculous Stylophone Beatbox, plus Casio MT 45 psychick dancehall, and three pairs of strings, not four, on the bouzouki. Following on from the quietly released Towers, Open, Fire/Looking For Business 7" towards the dying end of 2018 (PP 704EP), Precious Waste In Our Wake is a malediction forbidding mourning, a portfolio of old pathologies folded into a sleek new nervous wreck. Precious Waste In Our Wake exists as a hulking ride of audacious rhythmic passages swaying alongside the meanest of melodies suddenly swept over by flights most fragile. High gloss sleeve with insert.

DOBIE & MARK HARWOOD, SHOLTO The Blue Horse CD
Sholto Dobie is an artist and performer born in Edinburgh and living in London. His solo output is marked by live performances that are characteristically delicate, evocative, and absurd. He uses his own instruments, crudely assembled from materials such as reeds, whistles, bin bags, fans, and air compressors, alongside loose performative structures, to respond to places and situations. He plays in Al Fresco (with Lia Mazzari and Tom White) and regularly collaborates with Ben Pritchard, he has also worked with Ashley Paul. He continues to run the event series Muckle Mouth which he founded in 2014. Mark Harwood is a musician and performer born in Ferntree Gully and living in London. His output veers towards uncanny audio both delicate and unsettling whilst his performances rely on teasing out and playing with the mood embedded within any given environment and audience situation. He has collaborated with Graham Lambkin, Aine O'Dwyer, Timo Van Luijk, and MP Hopkins and runs the Penultimate Press label which brings forth this very release. The Blue Horse is a beautiful strange journey through a landscape where little is familiar but all are welcome. Made from predominantly acoustic sources, The Blue Horse gracefully hisses, puffs, wheezes, whirls, and clunks its way through a series of distinct musical and non-musical environments. Sounding both at times like a dark and stormy night, and "an elephant trying to get laid", the ambiguous style of The Blue Horse conceals the artists' unsettling, fantastical, and quietly humorous sensibility. Whilst The Blue Horse lacks any obvious precursors, its elemental and environmental leanings potentially tread a path initially mapped out by Moniek Darge and Godfried-Willem Raes in the works coming out of the Logos Foundation in Ghent, Belgium in the mid '80s. The Blue Horse is the debut recording from Sholto Dobie and Mark Harwood and features a guest appearance from cellist Judith Hamann.

ANADOL Uzun Havalar LP
Anadol is a psychedelic synth folk project by Gözen Atila, a Turkish sound artist and photographer based in Berlin. Her third album, Uzun Havalar, is based on collective improvisations of middle eastern folk songs called "uzun hava". They turn out as rich, atmospheric synth ballads. A diverse roster of improvising musicians creates their fascinating complexity. Anadol recorded them during extensive sessions in Istanbul. You can hear drummers laughing and playing guitars, composers howling, announcements in French and screams in no language, record collectors playing oscillators, and trumpets through spacious echoes. Anadol represents Gözen Atila's liberation from a rather academic approach to electronic composition which she pursued during her music technology studies in Istanbul. She calls her education the "darkness of serious music" where she first tried to belong, then to break free with the help of lo-fi synth pop. As a producer of radio plays and an expert field recording artist she has developed a distinct sense of timing, editing and sound design. Her Anadol project walks in the footsteps of lone synth experimentalists like Bruce Haack and The Space Lady with their childlike curiosity for electronic sounds, pushing the boundaries of minimal equipment. On Uzun Havalar she translates her experimental background into these floating folk ballads. The album was originally released on tape via Kinship in 2018.

NOCTURNUS AD Paradox CD
"Resurrected from the ashes of one of the most influential death metal bands of all time -- Nocturnus -- Nocturnus AD was initiated by founder/mastermind/death metal legend Mike Browning (also co-founder of Morbid Angel) to continue the path that was laid down, twenty-eight years later, by the legendary Florida death metal band's seminal 1990 album The Key, an album recognized as one of the most important death metal albums of all time. Entitled Paradox, this debut album is the direct and proper follow-up to that album, musically and thematically, with the story and themes vocalist/drummer Browning laid out then continuing on through the lens of the occult. The story follows the journey of Dr. Allen William Magus (aka Dr. Magus), a scientist who got ravaged by a war plague disease and kept what was left of himself alive by creating a bio suit. Musically, the album's otherworldly, technical dark atmospheric occult death metal blueprint harnesses and carries on the energy of the original album as well as the overall cult death metal vibe of the early '90s in the singular forward-thinking that Nocturnus exhibited back then. With Browning commanding the craft alongside a lineup that also forms his other band, After Death, the Nocturnus legacy continues through guitarists Demian Heftel and Belial Koblack, bassist Daniel Tucker (ex-Obituary), and keyboardist Josh Holdren. With the blazing and fervent guitar work and the carefully orchestrated keyboards being the most developed out of any Nocturnus-related release, these integral components solidify the calculated pummeling rhythm section and resurrect their classic sound. And of course Browning's distinct vocals spewing the incantations contain the classic vocal traits from the original album as well as Morbid Angel's classic Abominations Of Desolation, which Browning was the co-writer of. Paradox will see Nocturnus AD reclaim and continue to properly carry the torch of the legacy Nocturnus' laid down with The Key, finally, after twenty-eight years."

JANSON PRESENTS, GERD Musik For Autobahns 2: Ambient Race Car Music Compiled by Gerd Janson 2LP
2019 repress. "So, what awaits you on the second edition of a compilation that claims to present 'ambient race car music'? Exactly what it says. A fresh and exclusive collection of music that hopefully sounds as great in a car as it will in the comfort zone of your own living room or during dusk and dawn in your favorite club environment (see Bicep and Fort Romeau for further reference). But first and foremost it is truly inspired by many trips on the Autobahn between Frankfurt and Heidelberg. Going to and fro from one club to the other was the way to spend countless hours of adolescence in excitement instead of tedious purposelessness. But I will not bother you with droll stories of my youth. Musik for Autobahns 2 is the result of a collective effort by dear friends and esteemed colleagues who picked up where the first one ended, while paying attention to the prevailing theme. From Leon Vynehall and his profound research of the BAB 5 highway to Joy Orbison's 'A213' or Lauer's heartfelt and wry Kraftwerk pastiche, all of the tracks have a certain compatibility in common or just sound great, while having a drive. 'Breaking' by AKSK for instance made the stop-and-go traffic in the blazing heat of Los Angeles so much more bearable (the vintage Volvo helped as well). Also, you will meet freshmen like Orson Wells, whose idea of traveling exceeds the boundaries of our planet, next to elusive characters like Disco Nihilist. All bringing their special skills and imagination to the table" --Gerd Janson. Also includes tracks by Shan and Conga Radio.

The record also features two collaborations; on the opening track "Little Birds, Moonbath", Michelle Helene Mackenzie appears on modular synth, with Vancouver locals Pender Street Steppers joining Yu Su for an improvised jam, appearing on guitar and synth across "Tipu's Tiger".

SORGINI, GIULIANO Lavoro E Tempo Libero LP
Sonor Music Editions present a reissue of Giuliano Sorgini's Lavoro E Tempo Libero, originally released on Goldfinger in 1980. A highly sought-after Italian library jewel with mental disco-funk cuts and sleazy grooves. The music here was used to score various documentaries for Italian Rai TV, Lavoro E Tempo Libero by the eclectic maestro Giuliano Sorgini is another stellar recording from the comprehensive Italian library world, very different from his '70s masterpieces like 1971's Under Pompelmo (CNLP 037LP) or 1974's Zoo Folle, but with a perfect early '80s sound and clear funky greatness mixed with some very beautiful chill jams. An insane set of dark funk bangers filled with drum breaks and beats, different refined moods with soothing airs and lounge-y suites, exquisite flute notes by Nino Rapicavoli, along with sharp guitars and sleazy basslines. Easily one of the top albums out of library labels Usignolo/Goldifinger. Renewed artwork. Remastered sound from the original tape. 180 gram vinyl; Editions of 500.

MAUSKOVIC DANCE BAND, THE The Mauskovic Dance Band LP
Soundway Records present the eponymous debut LP from in-demand Amsterdam five piece, The Mauskovic Dance Band -- fusing no-wave dance punk, Afro-Caribbean rhythms, and space disco in a "controlled explosion" (The Quietus). Entirely self-produced, the band has reiterated their favorite elements of the '70s and '80s legacy of the Afro-Latin psychedelic music of Colombia and Peru, interpreting it through the context of modern-day Amsterdam. The output is a lo-fi no wave groove all its own -- rooted in a deep love of champeta, Palenque, psychedelic cumbia, chichi, classic Afrobeat, and picó soundsystem culture. Since the release of their Down In The Basement EP EP on Soundway Records in early 2018 (SNDW 12029EP), the band have found themselves on a hectic European touring schedule -- not to mention being involved in other side projects. Following stints with Turkish psychedelic folk rock group Altin Gün, and touring with the re-formed '70s Zamrock outfit W.I.T.C.H., Nic Mauskovic also teamed up with Dutch neo-psychedelic artist Jacco Gardner to form the "cinematic Balearic disco" duo of Bruxas (released by Dutch institution Dekmantel) -- and together, they mixed The Mauskovic Dance Band debut album in Lisbon. Lead single "Space Drum Machine" encapsulates the band's prototypical brand of busy rhythmic patterns interwoven with insistent synth stabs and vibrant disco toms, layered with an elastic guitar riff drawing inspiration from Kenyan kikuyu and benga styles. High-pitched vocals describe being on a flight together and inciting each other to press a button of unknown consequence with "push it, push it" -- and push it they do, at breakneck pace. And of course, the undeniable influence of Amsterdam's hotbed of underground dance producers shines through as it does on all tracks - with the vintage psychedelic swirl of synthesizer, lo-fi drum machines, and tape recording. RIYL: Jacco Gardner, Bruxas, Nu Guinea, Voilaaa, Sofrito, Meridian Brothers, EUT, Altin Gün.

BROKAW, CHRIS End of the Night CD
Glitterbeat's instrumental music imprint tak:til, is undertaking an exciting label partnership with VDSQ Records, the acclaimed US based label specializing in "21st century guitar". Boston-based Chris Brokaw has made an indelible mark on rock music both on his own as well as with his iconic bands Codeine and Come, and as a collaborator with Thurston Moore, Evan Dando, Stephen O'Malley, and many others. On End of the Night, he leads a group of renowned players to create an album of entrancing instrumentals. Featuring lush, indigo-tinged arrangements of horns and strings, the album expands on VDSQ's solo acoustic spirit, evoking a sublime jazz mood appearing as night passes into the early morning hours."End of the Night was conceived based around a simple concept. Late one evening the musician and myself were listening to records at home. After many hours it got to the point where everything became completely still, the silence permeating the walls, reverberating. We agreed to listen to one more record, but what would it be? What music could answer that existential quandary of the perfect last record of the night at home? I instantly asked him to make me the very record we needed to hear at the moment, a record for the end of the night. Several years passed before the execution of the concept could take place but Brokaw was collecting notes in the back of his mind the entire time. I suggested collaborators like Greg Kelley (on Chet Baker style trumpet, knowing Brokaw's strong affinity for that player) and Samara Lubelski (whom he played with briefly in Thurston Moore and the New Wave Bandits). Bringing in guests such as Lori Goldston, David Michael Curry, Luther Gray, Jonah Sacks, and Timo Shanko, each track has its own unique combination of small group formations (duos, trios, quartets) very much like jazz, both in instrumentation and mood, if not style or standards . . . The result is a multi-hued, jazz-tinged instrumental record with a melancholy resolve and a deep blue/purple filter. Very much a product of his song writing and playing, End of the Night's guests allow the guitarist to show his interplay and prowess in a variety of settings rooted around a common theme. The album art was done by Hollywood legend Sandy Dvore (Buffalo Springfield, The Cake, Partridge Family)." --Steve Lowenthal

JOHNSON, CHUCK Balsams CD
Glitterbeat's instrumental music imprint tak:til, is undertaking an exciting label partnership with VDSQ Records, the acclaimed US based label specializing in "21st Century Guitar".Chuck Johnson is a composer and musician residing in Oakland, CA. His 2017 album Balsams ended up on albums-of-the-year lists at Uncut, Pitchfork, and NPR. Tak:til is releasing Balsams for the first time ever on CD -- with two additional tracks. Chuck Johnson's pedal steel guitar debut delivers a group of pieces for ambient meditation. Recorded in a single two-week session during late 2015, and subsequently arranged/constructed/treated in the studio in spring of 2016, Balsams is awash in layers of tonal perfection. The album constantly evolves while maintaining a unified approach across both sides. Balsams is a record that lives outside genre and time, one that continues to develop with each successive deep listen. A unique expansion in the VDSQ catalog, Balsams is an album created in the hopes of providing solace and regenerative energies for many years to come."On this expressive and singular new album, Chuck Johnson gives his steel pedal guitar the starring role, and creates a kind of country post-rock. It feels like a universe unto itself." --Pitchfork (8.1)"Chuck Johnson often writes for solo acoustic guitar, but lately has been stretching his ambient composition skills with the tenderness heard throughout his discography. For Balsams, he layers loops of pedal steel guitar that rest on the edge of dusk, just when the tumult of day subsides and seeps into the soul's reflection." --NPR (Best Music of 2017)

WIGGS, JOSEPHINE We Fall CD
Alt-rock icon Josephine Wiggs is best known as bassist in The Breeders, rising to superstardom in the '90s and continuing to draw crowds and critical acclaim in the wake of their 2018 album All Nerve. But over the years, Wiggs has released several of her own albums, all of which delightfully defy genre. Her new solo record, We Fall, is both a departure and a distillation of an enduring personal aesthetic: moody and spare but also melodic, at once contemporary and nostalgic. Some influences are clear: We Fall is reminiscent of the experimentalism of Brian Eno's Another Green World (1975) and recalls the delicate, languid minimalism of Harold Budd. The album's classical inflections, sharpened by a dialog with electronic elements, evoke Alva Noto and Ryuichi Sakamoto. This is an album of juxtapositions: minimalist at moments, richly layered in others; ambient while also sharply focused; melancholy yet resolute. There's something both dreamy and scientific about We Fall. Wiggs, an enthusiastic amateur mycologist, has an impressive collection of mushrooms she's photographed in her travels. We Fall could be the soundtrack to what can't be captured in a single photo -- the growth and decay of miraculous creatures that a less astute and sensitive eye might overlook entirely. Composed, performed, and recorded by Wiggs, with drums and electronics by her longtime friend and collaborator Jon Mattock (Spacemen 3, Spiritualized), We Fall is a lyrical, bucolic album with an undercurrent of disquiet. Think of a wintertime walk in the woods as dusk falls too soon. True to the classic album form, the ten almost entirely instrumental tracks on We Fall form a compelling whole: a crystalline meditation on paths not taken and words unspoken, an elegy for moments lost and last embraces.

SHIRE, DAVID The Conversation - The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack LP
2019 repress. Trunk presents a special, first-time, issue of David Shire's soundtrack for The Conversation (1974). This is the first time the complete score to The Conversation has been released on vinyl. The film itself was originally released in 1974 but until now nothing else has ever been pressed on vinyl. Jonny Trunk's obsession with this music began after he'd caught the film, late night, sometime in the mid-1990s. Musically it's an exceptional example of the "new minimalism" in film music of the period, marking a departure (for some) from big scores to smaller, more economic ensemble sounds. The film was written, produced and directed by Francis Ford Coppola and is a thrilling journey into sound, mind and murder. Heavily influenced by Antonioni's Blow-Up (1966) Coppola wanted to fuse the concept of Blow-Up with "the world of audio surveillance". The story centers around Harry Caul (Gene Hackman), a professional wire-tapper and clandestine bugger consumed by a conversation he's been paid to record. Caul is a loner, an obsessive-compulsive character with numerous neuroses that play out brilliantly throughout the film. And as he slowly pieces together the conversation fragments and forms his own story around it, his world falls apart. For the music, Coppola wisely chose a young David Shire, his brother-in-law. Shire's deceptively simple piano theme is one of tragic beauty, capturing Caul's loneliness, his disturbed nature and this trip into darkness. The melody has both sweet and sour tones, feeling a little like a slow ragtime, developing throughout the film; there are even trips into avant-garde territory with electro-acoustic flourishes and Concrète. The agitated figure of Caul, wearing his distinctive transparent mac, is made all the more raw and poignant by the score, its sparse and curiously emotional compositions unlike any others from the period. The soundtrack for The Conversation proved to be a major break for Shire, his career taking off from this point. His next score was to classic Taking Of Pelham 123, followed up ironically by All The Presidents Men - a thriller about the Watergate scandal. The Conversation won several awards and nominations, and has become a classic of the "New Hollywood" movement. Personnel: Jack Nimitz - baritone sax; Ray Brown - bass; Shelly Manne - drums; Walter Murch - sound montage; Norman Wachner - engineer; Pete Jolly - piano; David Shire - piano; Clark Spangler - ARP 2600; Don Menza - tenor sax; Conte Condoli - trumpet.

This particular album consists of four previously unpublished tracks (on vinyl), including some highly regarded Lacy's compositions such as "The Crus"" and "Quakes" and Don Cherry's African flavored anthem called "Mopti". The Lacy-Cherry frontline flies over the agile, airy rhythm section of Holland and Togashi and the interplay between the four master musicians sounds loose and relaxed. While Brokaw himself is a brilliantly narrative guitarist, known for taking collaborative projects he's involved with to new heights, rarely has he opened his solo work to the same collaborative spaces as with his group projects. The result is a multi-hued, jazz-tinged instrumental record with a melancholy resolve and a deep blue/purple filter. Very much a product of his song writing and playing, End of the Night's guests allow the guitarist to show his interplay and prowess in a variety of settings rooted around a common theme. The album art was done by Hollywood legend Sandy Dvore (Buffalo Springfield, The Cake, Partridge Family), who composed the drawing after hearing the album in full, directly inspired by the music, adding a visual element similar to the stylistic innovations of David Stone Martin. Unlike anything else in Brokaw's catalog, VDSQ is proud to issue this essential recording that we believe merits new attention to a beloved artist who has been part of the fabric of the underground/independent music community for decades. While we have the utmost respect for his body of work, both solo and with his many groups, The End Of The Night may very well be the greatest record he's yet made. We hope this special album has a place on your stereo for many years to come. Play at night and not too loud."

ST. LOUIS, ANNA First Songs LP
"Despite her last name, Anna St. Louis was born and raised in Kansas City. She grew up a painter and singing in punk bands, eventually leaving her hometown to attend art school in Philadelphia. After graduating she made the move to Los Angeles where she began teaching herself guitar, writing songs and recording them on her own in her bedroom. First Songs is the sound of someone discovering their talent in real time -- a peak into the collage of a wonderful mind that is absorbing their new surroundings and using new tools to put them into the room. Listening to this collection you can feel the sun coming in through the window -- St. Louis on the foot of the bed with a guitar on her knee, finding her voice. She wears her influences well -- think Patsy Cline singing over John Fahey -- but has a style all her own. And while one can take the artist out of the Midwest, one can't take the Midwest out of the artist -- so let this be known: this is Midwestern music ran through a California filter. Anna St. Louis will have many more releases in her lifetime, but let it all begin here -- First Songs."
