ECHO & THE BUNNYMEN Ocean Rain LP
2019 repress. "'This is another new one off the greatest album ever made. It's called 'My Kingdom.'' Rock and roll arrogance has never hemmed so close to the truth as this Ian McCulloch introduction to 'My Kingdom' during the 1983 A Crystal Day concert special. Not only were Echo & the Bunnymen aware of the instant classic status of their latest LP, but the grand, majestic and fluid nature of Ocean Rain made it clear that the band had indeed set out to make 'the greatest album ever made.' Ironically, despite all of their work and focus, this masterpiece sounds like it was simply handed down from the gods. Following the more rock-oriented material on their first albums, the songs on Ocean Rain were a departure. The aim was to make something 'conceptual with lush orchestration, but with a twist.' With their success using strings on tracks like 'The Back of Love' and 'Never Stop' providing confidence, the band employed a 35-piece orchestra for Ocean Rain. Guitarist Will Sergeant would later describe the finished recording as 'windswept; dark and stormy.' The Scott Walker / Love inspired string arrangements, unusual instrumentation, inventive recording techniques and McCulloch's abstract and bewildering mysticism all added to the unique and timeless quality of the album. A statement of purpose by one of the elite bands from the '80s underground, Ocean Rain includes several of the Echo & the Bunnymen's most adored recordings and some of the best songs from the era. 'The Killing Moon,' 'Silver,' 'Seven Seas,' 'Crystal Days' and the aforementioned 'My Kingdom' continue to mesmerize a new generation of post-punk romantics, and the band's influence can be heard in the grandiose spectacle of groups such as Arcade Fire and British Sea Power."

CINTHIE 803 Crystal Grooves 003 12"
Cinthie's 803 CrystalGrooves returns with a four-track of raw and emotive house music. "Australian Summer" opens the package, a Balearic-tinged house cut featuring sun-drenched pad melodies, bubbling arpeggios, and choppy bass stabs alongside organic drums. "Infinity" follows next with bright chord sequences and crisp 909 drums. "This Bomb Is Mine" takes a more disco-tinged approach this time with filtered string loops, billowing vocal murmurs, and shuffled drums before "Rave Like No One Is Watching" then completes the package, as the name would suggest a high-octane workout designed for the peak-time with gritty rave stabs, penetrating drums, and resonant acid licks.

BIG TIDE Sync Or Swim LP
LP version. Founded by Liverpool native Ben Thomas in 2017, Big Tide was born out of Thomas's disillusionment with the electronic music scene. His previous output as French house producer L'Etranger spanned for six years gaining attention from the likes of Clash Magazine, Earmilk, and Amazing Radio, amongst others. The impetus to form this new project came in 2013 while touring with Spectrals as lead guitarist. A stay in Paris was the final catalyst for a change in musical direction when Ben picked up his 12-string and the chiming sound of Big Tide was born. The second single "Hide Me In Your Spaceship" features drums by Jonathan Nash, former drummer for Hookworms and guitarist for Cowtown. Thomas sings in his signature northern vocal style whilst shimmering 12-string guitars form the cornerstone of the Big Tide sound. Taking cues from bands like Big Star and Teenage Fanclub, Big Tide's music blends elements from '60s power pop, like The Byrds, and the '70s folk rock of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young.

CLAIM, THE The New Industrial Ballads LP
LP version. Includes download code. There is no English or British equivalent of Americana. If there were it might sound something like The New Industrial Ballads and The Claim would be seen as one of the originators of the genre. That doesn't mean an English group playing American music. This is a group of musicians making a beautiful and original hybrid that channels the root ingredients of classic English guitar music -- folk (Bert Jansch, Nick Drake), thoughtful, melodic pop (Michael Head, Ray Davies), and angular, politically-tinged pop (Paul Weller, Elvis Costello, Wolfhounds), into something that is contemporary and original. A recent feature in El País, Spain's biggest selling newspaper, described the band's reissued 1988 album Boomy Tella (TURN 064CD/LP) as the missing link between the Kinks and Blur. The New Industrial Ballads presents the group's first new recordings since 1992. It is how the group sound 30 odd years later if they'd continued to play and develop, rather than quit. The idea behind The New Industrial Ballads is to celebrate the noble tradition (the lineage of which runs through folk, ballads, skiffle, the Kinks, to punk and beyond) of ordinary people singing about everyday concerns and the issues of the day that impact on working lives. Three quick examples: "Journey" is about economic migration, the characters involved, the need to fight passionately for a fight the right of all to move to work; In "Estuary Greens And Blues", David Read reflects on the passing years and a changing industrial landscape as he walks the shore of the Thames estuary; "30 Years" is a collaboration with writer Vic Templar who narrates a poignant and prescient tale contrasts mankind's inability to progress politically and spiritually with technological advances (this is a follow-up to The Claim's cult classic "Mike The Bike", released on Bob "Saint Etienne" Stanley's Caff label in 1990). In the group's earlier period (1985-92) they secured "Single of the Week" in Melody Maker (Loser's Corner), received an 8/10 in NME for their album (Boomy Tella) and received regular airplay on John Peel and Andy Kershaw. The Manic Street Preachers, who used to write The Claim long love letters, performed their first ever London show supporting The Claim.

DEN HEYER, PAUL Everything So Far LP
LP version. Milky white vinyl. Liverpool's Paul Den Heyer: after auditioning for Magazine and Spizz Energi and playing in a string of local bands, his initial fifteen minutes finally came in the '90s with Fishmonkeyman. Probably best known for the indie-hit "If I've Told You Once" which led to deals with Warner Bros. and Virgin Music and put the band on TV, radio, and the road. More recently known as producer for Sunstack Jones and member of The Red Sided Garter Snakes with ex-members of The Chameleons, Bauer, Puressence, and Inspiral Carpets. Everything So Far is the first release under his own name, made with the help of good friends and featuring songs recorded in summertime on the leisure peninsula. With hints to Mojave 3 or Mazzy Star, with The Byrds even shining through, Paul Den Heyer creates moody acoustic landscapes and melodic miniatures with fantastic harmonies and a rich set of instrumentation. He describes the style as "Britanicana" and indeed his music blends British folk songwriting with '60s/'70s American psych-pop.

VIGROUX, FRANCK Totem 2LP
Double LP version. Matte laminated gatefold sleeve; Edition of 500. Aesthetical present Totem, the new full-length album by France's most singular contemporary composer, Franck Vigroux. Reflecting on ancient culture's use and reverence for emblematic monuments which most often represent myths and stories, the album's narrative has been infused with such symbolic and depicts an envisioned mythology, unfolding through its ten aural pieces. Franck Vigroux's music is unique and comprised of tectonic tension, pulsating rhythms, and abrasive analog textures like few can produce. Applying his own calculated personal signature in his sonic explorations his distinctiveness comes not only by his unique approach to sound but also by his incorporation of new media practices and performing arts into his A/V work. HEY COLOSSUS Four Bibles LP
LP version. Hey Colossus are one of Europe's great live bands. Since 2003 the six-piece has been driving around the continent with their "pirate ship" backline of broken amps and triple-guitar drang, elevating audiences in every type of venue imaginable; a doctor's waiting room in Salford, an industrial unit in Liege, and a vast field next to a river in Portugal. Four Bibles is their twelfth studio album and the first to be released by London label Alter. Recorded by Ben Turner at Space Wolf Studios in Somerset, it's their most direct album yet and follows a well-documented trajectory of evolution that began (in the truest sense) with 2011's RRR (REPOSE 063LP) for Riot Season and continued across three albums for Rocket Recordings. Lead vocalist Paul Sykes sounds more in focus than before, dialing down the effects and using reverb/delay to carry his lyrics rather than smother. The band has also fine-tuned to leave some room for extra depth. Piano, electronics, and violin (by Daniel O'Sullivan of This Is Not This Heat and Grumbling Fur) all find a way in amongst a familiar mesh of interlacing guitars, wrapped round a taut rhythm section. Like every other Hey Colossus record before, the line-up has altered and the sounds reflect this. From the weight of "Memory Gore", to the subtlety and swag of "It's A Low", via the sonic extremes of "Palm Hex/Arndale Chins" this is exactly as the band are live; raging and rail-roading but somehow in control. Grooves for those who want to dance or for those who want to hug a wall and nod... bleak dystopian imagery submerged in relentless rhythms and low-end rattle. The songs breath life and soul -- Hey Colossus have never sounded fresher or more on point.

Her weightless, almost-whispered vocals capture a hyper-natural feeling. The overall lyrical message is one of raw sincerity, as listeners confront unmistakable themes of loss and longing. LES RALLIZES DENUDES France Demo Tapes CD
Restocked. "This just might be the single greatest side of OTT psych/noise guitar oblivion ever put to disc from the most legendary Japanese underground group of all time, Les Rallizes Denudes: the mysteriously-named France Demo Tapes have previously only circulated on wildly dubious CD-R burns, often with contradictory and conflicting track listings/material but the session (whether it was actually recorded in France or not) is consistently dated as being from some time in the late '80s. This gloriously out-of-nowhere release finally delivers on the hype surrounding this much whispered-about session, two massively deformed versions of their classics "Night Of The Assassins" and "The Last One". You have heard nothing" like this and when Mizutani is on this kind of form it's hard to believe that any other rock music exists outside of this singular, blasted universe. Featuring a dream line-up of Charlie Haden, Ben Riley, Ashish Khan, Pranesh Khan, Bobby W., and Alice Coltrane. Newly re-mastered from the original tapes. In 1972 (Journey In Satchidananda/Lord of Lords era), during one of Alice Coltrane's most creative periods, she gathered five musicians for a live concert at the Berkeley Community Theater on July 23rd, 1972. Bassist Charlie Haden, Sarod player Ashish Khan, Pranesh Khan on tabla and naal, Ben Riley on drums, Bobby W. on tambura and percussion. The four tracks featured for the performance (three John Coltrane compositions) -- "Journey In Satchidananda", "A Love Supreme", "My Favorite Things" and "Leo" -- show a group in full flight to the cosmos. TAKAYANAGI NEW DIRECTION UNIT, MASAYUKI April Is The Cruellest Month CD
Masayuki "Jojo" Takayanagi (1932 - 1991) was a maverick Japanese guitarist, a revolutionary spirit whose oeuvre embodied the radical political movements of late '60s Japan. Having cut his teeth as an accomplished Lennie Tristano disciple playing cool jazz in the late '50s, Takayanagi had his mind blown by the Chicago Transit Authority's "free form guitar" in 1969 and promptly turned his back on the jazz scene by which he was beloved. Takayanagi had found a new direction, an annihilation of jazz and its associated idolatry of hegemonic American culture. Aiming his virtuoso chops towards the stratosphere, Takayanagi dedicated himself to the art of the freakout, laying waste to tradition left and right, most notably via the all-out assault of his aptly-named New Direction For The Arts (later, New Direction Unit) and collaborations with like-minded outsider saxophonist Kaoru Abe. His innovations on the instrument parallel those of Sonny Sharrock and Derek Bailey and paved the way for the Japanese necromancy of Keiji Haino and Otomo Yoshihide, but even at its most limitless hurdling Takayanagi's playing is propelled by the dexterous grasp of his foundations, to which he paid tribute with elegant takes on flamenco and Ornette Coleman's "Lonely Woman." Culled from 1975 sessions by the New Direction Unit, April Is The Cruellest Month was originally slated for release on ESP-Disk before the label's untimely demise that year. Part of the period of Takayanagi's career which he termed "non-section music," one can only imagine how its unholy racket might have altered an international understanding of Japanese noise. On "We Have Existed" and "What Have We Given?", the classic lineup of Takayanagi with Kenji Mori (alto sax, flute, bass clarinet), Nobuyoshi Ino (bass, cello), and Hiroshi Yamazaki (percussion) prove that free improvisation was thriving well beyond western Europe with a set of dilapidated, spacious clanging, Takayanagi's squalling feedback and Mori's Eric Dolphy moves undulating atop the joyous clamor. The cataclysmic "My Friend, Blood Shaking My Heart" is another story altogether. Infernal sheets of contorted sound find the berserk instrumentalists hopelessly entangled as they urge the explosion deeper and deeper into ecstatic oblivion. Rivaled in intensity only by John Coltrane's The Olatunji Concert (1967), Peter Brötzmann's Machine Gun (1968), and Dave Burrell's Echo (1969), April Is The Cruellest Month deservedly sees the light of day on the vinyl format for which it was originally conceived, marking the first issue of Takayanagi's music outside of Japan.

LA FEMME Psycho Tropical Berlin 2LP
2019 repress. French indie-rock band La Femme is a conundrum -- an episodic band with various faces. La Femme was born during the X years in Biarritz, France, when Sasha and Marlon started composing music on their guitars and recording it onto Garage Band. Together they ride surfboards, pianos and synthesizers as they explore various styles from '60s yé-yé French pop to California surf music. Marlon moved to Paris, and there he met Sam, who played bass. Together, they formed SOS Mademoiselle along with Olivier Peynot, and played vintage French rock, as Sasha was practicing his scales in reverb surf band Les Redoutables. Sasha then joined his friends in Paris, where they discovered French cold wave and synth pop, Marie et les Garçons being one of their favorites. They polished a style that could be described as one of the following: surf-wave, bizarre-wave, strange-wave, weird-witch-wave, silly mental-wave or psycho-tropical Berlin. Joined in 2010 by drummer Noé and female singer Clémence. La Femme formed its first live roster in a few days and took shape that same year with its first anthem, "Sur la planche," a song that was made to be hummed and whistled while riding a surfboard. Later on, La Femme released their second EP, Paris 2012. Soon joined by fancy rhythm drummer Nunez Ritter von Merguez aka La Sauterelle and singer Clara Luciani, as well as a whole roster of female singers, they now present their debut album Psycho Tropical Berlin where rock, pop, rococo Bauhaus, as well as influences from Kraftwerk and Elli & Jacno conjoin just to please you. BEBEY, FRANCIS Psychedelic Sanza 1982-1984 2LP
2019 repress. Double LP version with printed inner sleeve. Born Bad Records presents the music of Cameroonian musician Francis Bebey, circa 1982-1984. "The first time I saw a sanza (a type of African 'thumb piano'), it was just sitting there on a piece of furniture in my family's living room/dining room -- a space that our father also transformed into a recording studio every day. It seemed more like a box than a musical instrument: a mysterious instrument, which arrived at our house, like many things, in a somewhat miraculous way. The sounds it produced seemed particularly bizarre; to my young musician's ears, trained in Western classical music, it sounded out of tune. That's because, like my brothers and sisters, I had been trained on the piano. I had trouble understanding how anyone could endure these tones and, honestly, our father's passion for 'unusual sounds' did not interest me. I was in secondary school at the time (the very late 1970s) and was not at all oriented toward musical projects. I planned to graduate, and then become a chef. In the early 1980s, my interest in music picked up. I was still undecided about my career. I was content to pursue my 'serious' English studies while hanging out at jazz clubs at les Halles in Paris, where I sometimes joined jam sessions. Next, I put together my first band with professional musicians; I had hidden my age and lack of experience from them. France was just beginning to accept 'world music.' Musicians of every nationality were performing in Paris. It was a wonderful period. My father asked my brother Toups and me to accompany him for a few concerts. In particular, we toured Tunisia together at the time of the 1983 Carthage International Festival. Back then, my father was renowned across the French-speaking world. Everyone looked forward to hearing his humorous songs, like 'Agatha' and 'La condition masculine.' But, behind the scenes, he continued his research concerning electronic music, the sansa, pygmy polyphony, etc. One day he put a sansa in my hands, without saying a word. He was sending me a message: 'Let's see what you can do with it!' That's when I really discovered something. Exploring the instrument and playing, I transcended the 'imperfect' aspect of its sound and began to discover its fascinating potential. Playing the sansa, you enter a world that enraptures you in a very serene and mesmerizing way. I think its sounds evoke a rainbow, with rain falling while the sun shines. A very peaceful feeling. It allows you to make music that truly sounds like life. The sansa is also the instrument that my father and I shared the most because I am a pianist and he was a guitarist. I also share this eminently African instrument with my musician brother, Toups. Our father loved to tell us one of the legends of the sansa: how it even managed to dispel the boredom felt by... the Creator himself! This instrument gives life to the world, to beings and things. I did not participate in the production of the various records that my father devoted to the sansa. He did it himself, you might say, in his 'laboratory.' Yet today, I cannot imagine playing a concert without using a sansa. The piano remains present so that listeners don't become disoriented and wonder about the weird sounds invading their ears! However, I find the eccentric and disturbing side of sansa interesting. And the sansa always affects the audience: in reality, it excites them. The secrets of this instrument are surely its beneficial powers and... its magic!" --Patrick Bebey

SPECHTL, ANDREAS Strategies LP
LP version. "They say that the avant-garde moves faster than light and therefore has to travel under cover of darkness, flying blind, destination unknown. Little of today's realpolitik-related gloom casts its shadow over Strategies, the new album by restless avant-garde auteur Andreas Spechtl. On the contrary. Whereas the two preceding albums Sleep and Thinking About Tomorrow (And How To Build It) (BB 278CD/LP, 2017) documented quietly intimate, personal journeys along the margins of Europe or Iran, casting a skeptical eye on neoteric political shifts, Strategies is an altogether more explosive affair, buzzing with beats, effervescent with the energy of techno, dance, a celebration of resistance. The sense of unease engendered by global politics has given way to a new sense of self, to new strategies, an eagerness to escape into ecstasy, madness, anarchy. Right from the word go, as the first melodies take shape, as the first lines unfold, even as quiet, intimate moments from prior recordings linger on, a piano fades away, a saxophone passes by and then the beats kick in -- an almost anthemic 'yes, we will change the world/because we've done so/many times before' sets the euphoric tone for the rest of the album. And oh, the voice; following its disappearing act on the previous discs, it returns here on a wave of charming dandyism, dancing, screaming, whispering, moaning, striding unwaveringly, casually, aggressively, through techno, tribal and disco beats, scanning lyrics whose palpable, newly-gained coolness might just be a universal antidote against the world's political vacuum. It is also a voice which suddenly switches to Spanish on 'When We Were Young,' joined by Anna Seghers as a ghostly witness. The album was written in Santiago de Querétaro, not far from Mexico City. It was crafted mostly on a modular system and two synthesizers, without VST or digital equipment, the computer downgraded to the status of a mere multitrack recording device. Andreas Spechtl appears to have arrived at the core of his own self, all new, as if he had rewired himself amongst all the modules -- without having even tried to find himself, yet discovering someone in the circuits who had almost been forgotten or would be forgotten again, someone who only existed right there. With the philosophical and musical activism on Strategies he offers us the clearest, most readable signs pointing into the future." --Thomas Köck, January 2019.

THEE OH SEES Hounds Of Foggy Notion CD
"'Thee Hounds of Foggy Notion / Live Performances Sans Stages And Whatnots With Thee Oh Sees (2008), is a film we made just over a decade ago, and this record is the soundtrack. I loved making it, and I love all that were involved. I'm honestly blissed-out proud to hear over the years that it somehow is loved by so many others, too. I first met John Dwyer on Flag Day. I was blown away by a trio of roving Coachwhips guerrilla street shows that climaxed at the scenic vista parking lot high above San Francisco atop Mt. Sutro. Amongst the gathered uninitiated hordes of souvenir sweatshirt selling families, and puzzled elderly global tourist translators, and a white weirdo tuxedo wedding party, was the sonic corruption of the Coachwhips... I'm certain that this exact event was the idea seed for Thee Hounds Of Foggy Notion, and that it saved my life a little bit. When JPD asked me to consider making a video for Thee Oh Sees with the sole stipulation that he didn't want to do anything fake-y to playback, my head started swimming. What we mutually agreed upon was to essentially reprise Flag Day, and film Thee Oh Sees performing live, but not on stages. I rented a 15-passenger van, a generator, and the minimal cinematic equipment my trusted cinematographer friend James Wall deemed we needed. Everything sound wise was JPD territory and went through an ancient mixing board that Johnny had housed within a Samsonite suitcase. We ran all the plate mics from the drums, and the li'l pedestal mics from the amps through this old mixer, and we all believed that all would be well and swell.' --Brian Lee Hughes"

MORRICONE, ENNIO Ruba Al Prossimo Tuo LP
LP version. Digitmovies presents a reissue of Ennio Morricone's soundtrack for Ruba Al Prossimo Tuo, a 1968 film by Francesco "Citto" Maselli. The 1995 GDM Music compilation With Love presented a collection of love themes by Ennio Morricone. One theme, from Ruba Al Prossimo Tuo, was enclosed directly transferred from the music track of the movie itself, but the source was in such terrible conditions that did not make it possible to create a CD master. An expanded suite (from the same disputable source) was later enclosed on a Japanese CD, but unfortunately the sound quality was mediocre. The original master tapes containing the whole original recording session in very good mono sound, have now been discovered. This CD compiles every musical note recorded in 1968. The present version contains only the original music composed by Morricone, conducted perfectly by Bruno Nicolai. Morricone wrote a monothematic score including several orchestral variations of the main theme, a brilliant and very romantic motif with lounge flavor, vocalized by I Cantori Moderni di Alessandroni. Introduced first in "Titoli di Testa" and reprised with several variations throughout the score, the theme is presented in a classic-style version with harpsichord, organ and mandolin, a slow and dreamy version with the voice of Edda and also the choir I Cantori, a samba version, a beat-flavored mysterious version, another version once again with the splendid magical voice of Edda and a slower variation with the whistle of Alessandro Alessandroni. The style of Morricone thus delivers a strongly recognizable second theme, very romantic and lounge-styled, featuring a keyboard used by the author in other scores like Giu La Testa (1971). A classic-style minuet theme with the operatic vocalism of Edda enriches the score. The third theme is a brilliant orchestral samba introduced by a typewriter and developed by the whole orchestra and then reprised with the performance of the wonderful Cantori Moderni.

VA The Sacred Entertainment: Reak, Ceremonial Horse Trance Music from Priangan LP
Kasenian Réak is a genre of performative art from the Priangan area of west Java, organized during hajatans (life-cycle celebrations) and nowadays primarily held during weddings and circumcisions. The style, known as a seni lungsuran, is part of the greater family of Javanese horse dances, originally known in their most famous forms of jathilan and kuda lumping. Javanese horse dances, which could be as old as animistic Java, may already have been practiced before the eighth-century, traveling through the island and reaching Priangan in the thirties, when Réak is believed to have been originated and popularized by musical groups Juarta Putra and Maska Putra. While bearing more than some resemblances with its family, Kasenian Réak benefits of structures and aesthetic tracts of its own, being not only one of the newest developments of horse dance if not the newest, but also its rawest and most extreme outcome. The shows usually last up to nine hours, starting at nine o'clock in the morning and finishing between five or six o'clock in the afternoon. The morning part is dedicated to the pembukaan (ouverture), lasting up to one hour and dogcing or dogdog cicing (playing the dogdog on spot), while the afternoon is the time during which the arak-arakan (parade) takes place. After the arak-arakan goes around the village gathering people and announcing the celebration, it returns to the lot where it had begun and the show ends with a shorter dogcing. During the first dogcing it is possible to witness the dance of Bangbarongan: an animal-like creature costume representing a spirit and an ancestor, worn by a dancer who brings it alive for some hours. This is among the most exciting parts of the show. Sometimes it is also possible to witness a symbolic fight between the pimpinan and the Barong. Trance and possession obviously represent two of the main attractions of the style. The music as a sonic signal given by the speeded tempo, along with an Adorcistic practice conducted by the ma'alim are capable of inviting spirits to enter bodies and take control of them. When possessed, the individuals can, according to the entity they host, exhibit superhuman capacities. This release aims to provide a spectrum of Kasenian Réak and its music. The first side is a classic réak ouverture, played by one of the two founding groups, Juarta Putra. On the other side is Putra Jaya Melati: one of the groups that most attempts to push towards a contemporary, aggressive, and experimental version of Réak music.

NO NEGATIVE The Last Offices LP
Following on from 2015's mighty debut The Good Never Comes, No Negative's The Last Offices LP takes the Montreal quartet's penchant for raw, ragged noise, and lobs it into a drum of molten steel, before fashioning the cooling results into something truly formidable. First off, this is very audibly (and thrillingly) a punk rock record. You can hear the metal fascination that drove Black Flag down ever-heavier routes in the '80s, but also echoes of the explorative, spacey psych of Hawkwind and the pointed mind-fuckery of the Butthole Surfers at their most crushingly bleak. Hell, even the expansive kraut-punk spirit of John Dwyer's Oh Sees can be found here, albeit buried under the sheer force of something that is unmistakably hardcore. "Your planet has been swallowed by a black hole... you can no longer taste or smell or see," they claim on the ferociously bad trip of "Transmission From The Black Hole:, and that's an accurate reflection of what it feels like to listen to this band operating at full pelt. They're smart, they're harrowing and they're totally kick-ass. They're the sound of a generation-wide existential crisis, making anthems for anyone who knows the only way through the mess of 2019 is to surrender your brain to the healing powers of the riff and just watch everything evaporate.

NEGATIVE SPACE Cruelty LP
Not content with pouring their bleak urgency all over the trials and tribulations of modern existence with 2017 LP Gestalt, Negative Space return with a seven-song slab of brutalist post-punk -- and it's another triumph. Seething with fury, it almost (but not quite) masks its venomously-spat lyrical content behind angular basslines that Steve Hanley would've been proud to call his own and guitar chords that teeter and totter between the blunt force of Black Flag and the dissonant crunch of Gang of Four. This is no easy ride; it's music that wraps itself up in peril before clawing its way out and stomping on whatever's left. With song titles like "Theft Utopia" and "Performative", you know what you're getting -- a pointed railing against those who hide behind hypocrisy and illusion, while the monochrome glare of the music makes it clear that none of this is to be fucked with. At times it even sounds like they've been caught up in the textured smoosh of Sonic Youth's Washing Machine (1995), with guitars exploding into senses-crushing fog even as the mechanical clank of the rhythm section continues its relentless, insistent pounding.

CORNER BOYS Waiting For 2020 LP
What's that you say? "The punk album of 2019"? Ahhh, c'mon man, it's way too early for grand statements like that. What, you think you can make this claim? Just because Vancouver trio Corner Boys have managed to mesh the finest elements of Good Vibrations heroes like Rudi, Protex, and (sure) The Undertones with the buzzsaw power-pop of their city forefathers, the Pointed Sticks? Just because songs like "(I'm Such A) Mess" flow so effortlessly into your consciousness that you'll start wondering how your brain ever functioned without 'em? Hell, just because this might just be a perfectly-executed example of the sort of spiky, addictively essential treat you started to wonder if you would ever hear again? Waiting For 2020 follows a duo of excellent singles -- 2017's Just Don't Care and 2018's Love Tourist -- and it doesn't just pick up where they left off, it does what you always hope the follow-up to an opening salvo will do. It takes the promise they set forth and does way more than merely deliver on it, instead providing us with hook after hook and pogo-worthy pop classic after pogo-worthy pop classic.

CAUSA SUI Summer Sessions Vol. 1 LP
Causa Sui's three volumes of Summer Sessions are back in print, originally released in 2009. This time on the band's own label, on individual LPs for the first time since they were first released in 2008 and 2009. Re-packaged in El Paraiso's signature style. Originally the Summer Sessions were intended as a side project for the band -- a chance to explore their love for other genres such as American free jazz, krautrock, 1970s soundtracks, as well as the psychedelia and detuned stoner-rock that characterized Causa Sui's first two albums. But these three albums came to define the band, and have become modern classics of psychedelia and progressive rock since their initial release ten years ago. In a scene often characterized by loyalty to a specific period, there's something refreshing about Causa Sui's eclectic approach. With several guest appearances by Coltrane-devotee Johan Riedenlow on sax and electronics wiz Rasmus Rasmussen, Causa Sui venture far beyond stoner-rock platitudes. Take the grandiose opening statement for example -- the 24-minute "Visions Of Summer" taking up the entire A-side on Vol. 1: here new and old sounds dissolve in a mind-bending excursion that recalls Future Days-era Can, breezy tropicalia or Herbie Hancock's Mwandishi group, as much as it sparks associations to Kyuss or Hendrix. Other tracks, such as the frenetic "Rip Tide" on Vol. 2 (EPR 002LP), heads into straight up free jazz territory with Riedenlow going absolutely bonkers on the sax. But this set also allows plenty of room for atmospheric pieces such as the sun-drenched "Venice By The Sea" on Vol. 3 (EPR 003LP) or the Morricone-esque "Cinecitta" on Vol. 2.

ANYTHING BOX Peace LP
"Veterans of the synth-pop movement of the '80s and early '90s, the New Jersey trio Anything Box took their name a collection of short stories, and made their name among a cult following of club-goers for their quirky, and often minimalist alt-dance music. While they never reached the heights of commercial success as contemporaries like Erasure or Depeche Mode, Anything Box endeared themselves to synth fans and music critics alike, even scoring a minor Billboard hit in the form of the atmospheric, New Order-like 'Living In Oblivion'. Anything Box's debut album, 1990's Peace, is considered an essential, if often overlooked piece of synth-pop history, and is one of the band's great hallmarks. Across 12 tracks of lush, melodic, techno-infused dance-pop, Peace features production from the esteemed producer Jon St. James, (Berlin, Jon Anderson, SSQ, Candyman) whose distinct ambient textures mesh splendidly with the tenor vocals of frontman Claude S., and the twin synthesizers of keys-players Dania Morales and Paul Rjinders. Decades after its release, Get On Down now presents this exclusive reissue of Peace, with revitalized sound, re-created album art, and on vinyl for the first time in over 20 years."

MUSSIDA, SANDRO EEEOOOSSS LP
Sandro Mussida presents EEEOOOSSS, music on three tuning systems, for electric guitar, bass clarinet and cello samples. Personnel: Alessandra Novaga - electric guitar (e-bow), tuning: twelve true fifths (*renold I); Edgardo Barlassina - bass clarinet, tuning: hypodorian aulos; Sandro Mussida - cello, tuning: just intonation (*II partials). Mastered by Giuseppe Ielasi. Edition of 300."During the last few years, I've found myself more and more attracted to sounds that are somehow connected to slow, intentional musical gestures. This slowing down of the musical gesture makes it possible for me to pause, to observe and listen to the richness, the details and nuances of the timbres. It also reveals the relationships between sounds in space and time. This kind of listening from a closer perspective also amplifies the connection between timbre and frequency making it possible to investigate even the smallest differences in the intervals. EEEOOOSSS is the encounter between three instruments, each one tuned according to a different tuning system. This meeting was conceived and designed over a period of years but only once took place in the Church of S. Giusto, Volterra, Italy, during the night of the 12th of August, 2018, in the nave, the transepts and the choir. Each of the three temperaments embodies specific characteristics, amplified by the instrument assigned to play it. The dark (almost pure and 'spaceless') tone produced by the e-bow on the strings of the guitar gives voice to the clear tones of the Pythagorean Tuning. The air resonating into the clarinet produces the frequencies of a system derived from the tuning of the ancient Greek flute. As a conclusion, I recorded on the cello one of the scales obtained from the exact relations observed in the partial harmonics of the second octave. Each of these three sounds possesses, in fact, a very different balance between inharmonic and harmonic qualities, from the almost pure sound of the e-bowed electric guitar to that of the most inharmonic, horse-hair bowed cello. Thus, electric guitar, clarinet, and cello are treated as raw material, modeled in their form (primarily through filters and envelope constraints), but without changing their individual distinctive timbral character. The real shaping factor, is, in fact, the architectural space, which added multiple reflections to these materials during the live session, amplifying asymmetric partials, dilating some of the frequencies and interweaving these three scale systems one into the other. Temporarily structured into the domain of software, the gestures acted upon by these sounds are complete in itself. Repetition is illusory, it appears only on the surface. These three meditations are also an occasion to investigate the boundaries between the abstract dimension of electronic music and the living body of a concert." Sandro Mussida Firenze, April 5, 2019

CONSUMER ELECTRONICS Airless Space 2LP
Double LP version. Consumer Electronics return with Airless Space, a double album of all new studio recordings produced by Russell Haswell. Some wondered how the songwriting team of Philip Best and Sarah Froelich would fare after the leaving their London home to take up residency in the United States. Well, here's the answer. Recorded in San Francisco, CE deliver Airless Space, a state-of-the-union address that does for an American audience what the band's earlier Estuary English (DPROM 108LP, 2014) album did for a British audience poised upon the coming madness of Brexit. Unusually for CE, Airless Space clocks in at 60 minutes, a hexed induction for a country laboring under a presidency, that like Brexit itself, few saw coming or contemplated having to endure. Sound-wise, CE have maybe mellowed the tone a touch, allowing their electronics to stretch out and breathe, whereas the frenzied and anxious vocals of Best and Froelich remain as snatched and breathless as ever. Stunningly produced by Russell Haswell and gorgeously mastered by award-winning cutting engineer Matt Colton, Airless Space by Consumer Electronics is their most complete and rounded statement yet.

But I wanted to go beyond rap, to dig deeper into Francophone artists who convey a message of poetic urgency, of sensitive poetry on the edge, committed to a cause despite itself, because their environment gives them no choice. In the shadow of high-profile singer-songwriters are women and men who became artists just for the time it took to release a single record. These rhythms and lyrics are wrapped in their own tough and sincere kind of blues. The French language unites regions of the world that bear common burdens; geopolitics and emotions are intermixed. Many artists present in this collection didn't have the good fortune of finding a receptive audience at the time; I think that current issues around migration and identity will give special resonance to these words and this music. This project, which is both musical and heritage-related, meets a specific need: bringing forth (and back) these voices for new generations living in France who lack identification with something. This record is thus a declaration, a piece of memory to show us that the window of possibilities was open for a short time, before being closed up again, plunging us into individualism, a short-term outlook, and a lack of projects to improve society."Features: Jean-Marie Tjibaou, Joby Bernabé, Lena Lesca, Alfred Panou & Art Ensemble Of Chicago, Léon Gontran Damas, Slimane Azem & Cheikh Nourredine, Manno Charlemagne, Guy Cornely, Groupement Culturel Renault, Colette Magny, Salah Sadaoui, Võ Nguyên Giáp, Les Colombes De La Révolution, Hô Chi Minh, Peloquin / Sauvageau, Francis Bebey, Pierre Akendengue, Eugêne Mona, Dane Belany, Troupe El Assifa, Dansons Avec Les Travailleurs Immigrés, and Abdoulaye Cissé.

TODD & THE RANKOUTSIDERS, PAT The Past Came Callin' CD
As the frontman for the ferocious Lazy Cowgirls for over two decades, Pat Todd was a SoCal garage/punk godfather. In 2005, however, he sent the Cowgirls to the great saloon in the sky in order to get a fresh start. As you can take the boy outta the garage but you can't always take the garage outta the boy, traces of the Cowgirls' high-velocity vibe remain in The Rankoutsiders' sound. They follow a similar path to the latter-era Cowgirls -- fast and loud old-school punk on one hand, and hard but heartfelt honky tonk on the other. The Rankoutsiders -- part Chuck Berry, part Hank Williams, part Rolling Stones, part Johnny Thunders -- are the perfect vehicle to bring Pat Todd's visions to life, rocking like raging fury one minute and swaying like an Indian summer breeze the next. The album reflects the diversity of American rock n' roll. Love, hope, sex, death, betrayal, renewal -- it's all here. Pat Todd's songwriting is a road map that leads back to the self ? an existential longing to reside in the aesthetics of self-creation. Some call it art, others the blues, soul, country, rock n' roll. The Rankoutsiders are Pat Todd on acoustic guitar, harmonica and vocalist, Nick Alexander on electric and acoustic guitar, Kevin Keller on electric and acoustic guitar, and vocals on "The Ring, The Bottle & The Gun", Steven Vigh on bass along with drummer Walter Phelan. The Past Came Callin' was produced and engineered by former Sparks guitarist, Earle Mankey (The Cramps, Concrete Blonde, The Beach Boys, Possum Dixon). CD version comes in digipak.

DUNCAN & JOACHIM NORDWALL, JOHN Conventional Wisdom LP
Venerable avant-garde composer John Duncan follows his prized cycle of cover versions Bitter Earth (2016) with Conventional Wisdom; a truly beguiling new suite of original, stony avant-blooz songs produced in collaboration with iDEAL boss Joachim Nordwall, and marking another high point in both of their catalogues After coming out as a vocalist to memorably striking effect in 2016, Duncan compounds the effect with Conventional Wisdom, placing his original lyrics in stark arrangements ranging from shortwave radio-streaked dark ambient settings and Mika Vainio-esque isolationism, to deathly dubs driven by Nordwall's rugged rhythms in a style that heavily recalls Jay Glass Dubs' Epitaph LP (2019). An original and close associate of LAFMS co-founder Tom Recchion, and collaborator with everyone from Chris & Cosey to Asmus Tietchens, Merzbow, and Andrew McKenzie (The Hafler Trio), Duncan is well versed in the art of fucking with music. Doing so since the '70s, it's only in recent years that more "typical" song structures have crept into his style with most transfixing effect, gathering the attention of many who previously weren't necessarily exposed to his music. Whether stemming from a perverse pleasure in twisting popular music, or a matter of changing with age (65), we're just not sure, but either way Duncan is now coming out with some of the most broadly appealing, yet incomparable work in his 50-year-wide catalog. Aided by Joachim Nordwall, the pair convene a set of songs every bit as fascinating, eerie as the cover image of a birdcage mask bound in barbed wire. The title track emphasizes the stark mystery with nothing more than meditative vocals, gamelan strikes and daubs of shortwave, before "Hard Swallow" catches him huskily channeling Lee "Scratch" Perry at a spooky distance, while the disembodied dub tropes of "Soft Eyes" come uncannily close to aspects of Jay Glass Dubs, and "Say No" says it in the bluntest, most bluesy terms. The most desiccated, strung-out material however is saved for the B-side, with the sferic resonance and stereo-strafing vocal of "The Joke" planning out into the cracked hush of "The Beautiful Attempt", before he and Nordwall effectively duet in the finale "The Red Hot Alternative", where Nordwall also supplies pranging percussion and Coil-esque synth abstraction. RIYL: Pere Ubu, Jay Glass Dubs, Coil, Pan Sonic, Scott Walker. Mastered at Dubplates & Mastering, Berlin. Edition of 300.

COKER, JULIE A Life In The Limelight: Lagos Disco & Itsekiri Highlife, 1976-1981 LP
LP version. Gatefold sleeve. Kalita Records release the first ever compilation focusing on the musical career of Julie Coker, the queen of Nigerian television. Here the label collates seven of Julie's most sought-after Afro disco and hauntingly-beautiful Itsekiri highlife recordings, accompanied by extensive interview-based liner notes and never-before seen photos. After gaining fame as Miss Western Nigeria 1957, Julie began her career in the Nigerian entertainment industry as the country's first ever (and Africa's second) female television presenter, as well as a popular national radio host. In 1976, having been surrounded by close musical friends, including Fela Kuti and Kris Okotie, Julie entered the Nigerian music scene with the now-invisible psychedelic highlife album Ere Yon (Sweet Songs) (1976), followed in 1981 by the highly sought-after disco-centric Tomorrow to great acclaim. Both now fetch eye-watering prices on the rare occasion that they become available for sale. Kalita Records select four recordings from Ere Yon (Sweet Songs) and three from Tomorrow, all as contemporary-sounding today as they were when first released forty years ago. These include Julie's "Ere Yon", which was recently re-interpreted by Anderson .Paak on Oxnard released on Dr. Dre's Aftermath imprint in 2018, and the lost Afro disco classic "Gossiper Scandal Monger". In partnership with Julie, Kalita Records believe the time is right to share Julie's phenomenal story and music with the world once more.

CHAPPELL, RASHEED First Brick CD
"First Brick is the long-awaited return of critically acclaimed emcee Rasheed Chappell. His debut LP Future Before Nostalgia was heralded as a classic by many in the indie Hip Hop scene. On First Brick Rasheed pairs once again with legendary producer Kenny Dope to provide the canvas for his vivid wordplay. It's been 7 years since Rasheed's last release and First Brick serves as a reminder and reintroduction. It reminds those already familiar with Rasheed why he is held in such high regards by luminaries such as O.C., Lord Finesse, DJ Eclipse, DJ Scratch & DJ Clark Kent to name a few. It also serves as an introduction to those who may not be familiar with the work Rasheed had been putting down over the years. Collaborating with the likes of Raheem DeVaughn, Apollo Brown, Diamond D and others has maintained his profile as an elite level rhyme sayer. First Brick provides an in-depth look into the mind and musings of Rasheed Chappell. The title serves as a compass, leading the listener to the very beginnings of what made Rasheed the man he is. His crisp delivery and penchant for silver screen-esque lyricism is on full display on songs such as '101' and 'Shorty Rock Pt.1'. The opening track 'Breaking Ground' is a spoken word piece that informs the audience about the ride they're about to embark on. All of life's hardships and heroism are captured in his words. 'Street Corner Shit' is a standout track that serves as an ode and cautionary tale to those that indulge in such recreation. Unlike his debut LP, Rasheed isn't the sole voice on this project. Enlisted are some of today's truly exceptional rhyme spitters. CRIMEAPPLE and Daniel Son help paint a haunting picture on 'Aiding & Abetting'. On the bar for bar banger 'Kingsmen' Recognize Ali, Hus Kingpin, Napoleon Da Legend and Lil Fame of M.O.P. all pen precise poetic mayhem over a neck snapping Kenny Dope rhythm. As the introduction of the album states, every building starts with a single brick. As long as the foundation of Rasheed Chappell and Kenny Dope remain intact, expect nothing but good things."

VA Ska From The Vaults Of Federal Records CD
Ska was the name given to the music that came out of Jamaica between 1961-1966. Based on the American R&B and doo-wop records that the sound systems in Kingston Town used to play. However, the American records style started to mellow out, while the Jamaicans preferred a more upbeat sound. So the sound system bosses became record producers to cater for this demand. Sir "Coxsone" Dodd and Duke Reid led the way putting the top musicians on the Island in the studio to make music unmistakably Jamaican. A lot of their early recordings were cut at Federal Records before they built their own studios. Federal Records was the first domestic Jamaican studio, based at 220 Foreshore Road, Hagley Park, Kingston. It opened its doors in 1961 and was owned by Ken Khouri who first licensed American records to the island of Jamaica, before cutting his own tunes, which were some of the first Jamaican R&B and ska singles. Ken Khouri initial studio was Records Limited but very basic so with the help of engineer Graeme Goodall built the new studio complex at 220 Foreshore Road which also contained a pressing plant and disc cutting room. The studio was not only the forerunner for ska music but the music that followed and in 1981 Ken Khouri sold the complex now on the renamed road Marcus Garvey Drive to Bob Marley who renamed the premises Tuff Gong Studios whose legacy carries on today. Kingston Sounds have compiled some of the best ska sounds that came out of the Federal Vaults, with some of the best artists, musicians from the time. The great Lord Tanomo, Don Drummond, Rico Rodriguez, Roland Alphonso, alongside some lesser-known artists. However, one thing is for sure, the quality never drops on this fine collection of ska hot tunes. Also features Reuben Anderson, The Skatalites, Ferdie Nelson, Bibby And The Astronauts, Ivan Jap, and Jackie Opel. Repressed. Lilith present a reissue of Caetano Veloso's Caetano Veloso (A Little More Blue), originally issued in 1971. Often referred to as "Brazil's unofficial poet laureate" and the "Bob Dylan of Brazil", this heavyweight of Brazilian music was also a young revolutionary who used his music to protest against Brazil's oppressive military regime. This protest music, which became known as tropicalia, first earned Veloso a stint in jail, but by the time this dour album was released in 1971, it had placed him in exile in the UK. Veloso's extreme bitterness and melancholy can be heard on every groove of this album, but don't let the album's gloomy atmosphere stop you from buying it; it is dripping with some of the best moments of saudade in the history of Brazilian music. LUCIER, ALVIN Still Lives CD
2019 repress. 2001 release. Three works for pure waves and instruments from Alvin Lucier. Lucier has pioneered in many areas of music composition and performance, including the notation of performers' physical gestures, the use of brain waves in live performance, the generation of visual imagery by sound in vibrating media, and the evocation of room acoustics for musical purposes. His recent works include a series of sound installations and works for solo instruments, chamber ensembles, and orchestra in which, by means of close tunings with pure tones, sound waves are caused to spin through space. Personnel: Marilyn Nonken - piano on Music for Piano with Slow Sweep Pure Wave Oscillators; Ryuko Mizutani - koto on "On the carpet of leaves illuminated by the moon"; Joseph Kubera - piano on Still Lives. "I count Alvin Lucier's Still Lives among the most beautiful recordings I've ever heard. Like Janácek, Lucier's art stands alone despite the air of detached cool it shares with Lovely Music's catalog. Lucier's deceptively simple aesthetic is in fact delightfully complex in the manner in which it reveals horizons. In this release, the composer has purely acoustic sounds (single piano tones, less often chords, and briefly, koto) interacting with electronically created, similarly uncomplicated sounds. The magic -- and I choose that word carefully -- occurs in the mingling. Lucier takes his time, and so should the listener. I can think of little music better suited to the recording medium. The disc's eponym, in eight parts, serves as a showpiece for the varieties of soul-touching experience Lucier's seemingly perfunctory systems permit. The composer's good notes tell the story. Particular congratulations to Tom Hamilton (a fine composer in his own right) for a wonderfully intimate sound." --Mike Silverton, "Golden Ear Awards 2002", The Absolute Sound (Mike Silverton is the editor of LaFolia.com)

KOGUMAZA Fugues 2LP
Fugues is the third full-length album from Nottingham's Kogumaza. Ambitious in both scope and arrangement, Fugues sees Kogumaza stretch the traditional rock album template to breaking point, with a determination to create large ensemble compositions whilst working within the confines of the bands core trio. The album was meticulously created over a period of four years, at locations ranging from DIY practice spaces and bedrooms through to final mixing and mastering on the Isle of Lewis. Building upon themes of memory loss and dyschronometria, (the inability to keep track of time), the drawn-out period of composition and recording, together with its use of extended playing techniques, multiple guitar overdubs, and constant experimentation resulted in the band experiencing their own fugue state. Fugues is the soundtrack to being lost in the wilderness under an unrelenting sun, surrendering to the hallucinations which form as mirages upon an infinite horizon. Whilst heavy and often overwhelming, this is mesmerizing listening, striking an expert balance between hypnotic repetition and thematic evolution. Clear vinyl; includes download code.

Local Suicide, aka Munich's Brax Moody and Greek-born Vamparela, has it in spades. With its swerving bass slithering over a slow tempo, "Leopard Gum" is the perfect slow burner. The synths that come crashing across the track's Smagghe & Cross remix add their saturated signature that provide a different kind of hook through its breathless nine-minute run. The same measured tempo is found once more on the more ethereal "Already There", where Local Suicide affirm their adherence to the more captivating signatures of new wave and post disco. Lauer adds a surprising electro pop shimmer to the track.

"The band was formed in 1967 by the merger of two Berlin rock groups. In April 1972, the band toured Egypt, Lebanon, Cyprus and Greece with Lutz Ulbrich, Michael Günther, Jörg Schwenke, Michael Hoenig and Burghard Rausch as members at the invitation of the Goethe-Institut. The manifold impressions of this journey were reflected in the first album Malesch. Extensive activities made the band known throughout Europe. In the summer of 1972 the group appeared in the cultural program of the Olympic Games in Munich, toured France for two months at the beginning of 1973, performed at the 'German Rock Super Concert' in Frankfurt in May, produced the second album 2nd and then went on tour through France and German cities. Both the SFB and the WDR broadcast portraits and live concerts. In 1974, the band was tired and at the end of the year, after a farewell concert, the band temporarily broke up. Looking back, it became clear that the experimental circle Agitation Free was one of the most important bands of the 'Berlin School' and also a career springboard for some German musicians. Thus, Christopher Franke helped the band Tangerine Dream to worldwide recognition. Michael Hoenig works with Klaus Schulze and Tangerine Dream before he became known as a film composer after a solo album in Hollywood (including the film music for 9-12 weeks). Axel Genrich changed to Guru Guru, Burghard Rausch became a founding member of Bel Ami. Gustl Lütjens toured with Shirley Bassey and Nena and later found a big audience with his new age band Living Mirrors especially in the USA. Lutz 'Lüül' Ulbrich joined Ashra, worked with ex-Velvet underground singer Nico, produced solo records alongside theatre music and has been celebrating success with the 17 Hippies since the end of the nineties."

The album continues in showing his fascination with aliens, drugs and religion. His own voice is often multi-layered and contrasting with each other. It's a wonderful record and it shows that even after all those years he was still capable in recording an album which stands out during the time of release. Lee 'Scratch' Perry was a pioneer in the 1970s development of dub music and worked together with artists such as Bob Marley and the Wailers, The Clash and The Beastie Boys. EL SHAZLY, NADAH Ahwar (Clear Vinyl) LP
2019 repress! Clear vinyl version. Nawa Recordings present Ahwar, the debut album by Nadah El Shazly. Starting out singing Misfits covers in a local punk band, then moving on to producing her own electronic tracks and making a name for herself in Cairo's underground scene, Nadah El Shazly's backstory is not that unusual. Her debut album on the other hand, is an entirely unexpected story. Two years in the making, Ahwar (Arabic for "marshlands") is an otherworldly record, not unlike an abstract mythological story-tale. Opening with the mangled and filtered vocals of "Afqid Adh-Dhakira (I Lose Memory)", like an alien dream, the drones of a bowed double bass lead the listener into a drum groove that lays the groundwork for El Shazly's sultry and captivating presence. The Arabic prose lingers over interjections of slap-back delayed guitar twangs and an avant-garde arrangement of dissonant winds, horns, and seemingly random drum fills, ending with an eerie soundscape that wouldn't feel out of place in a giallo classic. Composed, written, and produced by El Shazly herself in collaboration with The Dwarfs Of East Agouza's Maurice Louca and Sam Shalabi on co-composition and arrangement duties, the album was crafted across two continents, between Canada and Egypt, and features the crème of Montreal's contemporary-classical and improvised music scene, most of whom are members of Shalabi's own Land Of Kush ensemble. In between El Shazly's five original tracks, the listener is treated to an abstract conversion of Sayyid Darwish's classic "Ana 'Ishiqt (I Once Loved)". El Shazly's haunting vocal floats over broken kalimba and harp arpeggios which slowly intertwine with a free, bowed double bass improv to nestle within the breaks between Younes Al-Qadhi's early 20th century verses of love and betrayal. More than that, it is difficult to really describe, but imagine the worlds of Nico, Björk, and Annette Peacock with the Arabic language as their mother tongue, re-approached through acoustic avant-jazz harmony and re-constructed with a dash of Kamilya Jubran's modern styling of Arabic maqam and you may be somewhere close. Recorded and delicately mixed through miles of analog cabling by Thierry Amar and mastered by Harris Newman, the album is adorned with the surrealist artwork of Egyptian artist Marwan El-Gamal and designed with custom typography by Egyptian designer Valerie Arif. Includes booklet featuring the lyrics in Arabic and English.

VA Welcome To Zamrock! Vol. 1: How Zambia's Liberation Led To A Rock Revolution 2LP
2019 repress; Double LP version. Includes download card. Featuring Nogzi Family, Witch, Musi-O-Tunya, Chrissy Zebby Tembo, Amanaz, Blackfoot, "and every important Zamrock band." "Explore Zambia's liberation and its impact on the country's rock revolution. By the mid-1970s, the Southern African nation known as the Republic of Zambia had fallen on hard times. Though the country's first president Kenneth Kaunda had thrown off the yoke of British colonialism, the new federation found itself under his self-imposed, autocratic rule. Conflict loomed on all sides of this landlocked nation. Kaunda protected Zambia from war, but his country descended into isolation and poverty. This is the environment in which the '70s rock revolution that has come to be known as Zamrock flourished. Fuzz guitars were commonplace, as were driving rhythms as influenced by James Brown's funk as Jimi Hendrix's rock predominated. Musical themes, mainly sung in the country's constitutional language, English, were often bleak. In present day Zambia, Zamrock markers were few. Only a small number of the original Zamrock godfathers that remained in the country survived through the late '90s. AIDS decimated this country, and uncontrollable inflation forced the Zambian rockers that could afford to flee into something resembling exile. This was not a likely scene to survive -- but it did. Welcome To Zamrock!, presented in two volumes, is an overview of its most beloved ensembles, and a trace of its arc from its ascension, to its fall, to its resurgence."

BROWN BAND, THE JAMES Sho Is Funky Down Here LP
Repressed. "Sho is Funky Down Here and The Grodeck Whipperjenny are a pair of albums that are the result of an unlikely but highly productive musical relationship between James Brown, a superstar at the creative and commercial peaks of his long career, and David Matthews, a then young arranger-musician whose limited professional experience had little or nothing to do with the funk and soul of his collaborator. James Brown's psychedelic album, created by his then-bandleader David Matthews, and issued at the same time as Matthews' classic The Grodeck Whipperjenny. Underground, fuzzy, rambling psych-funk. The genesis of Brown's 'Talking Loud And Saying Nothing,' a 1990s hip hop sample staple, informing A Tribe Called Quest, Large Professor, Brand Nubian and others. Both albums were lacquered directly from the original master tapes at Capitol Studios. This is the first official reissue of both of these rare titles. Each album contains an extensive booklet with full annotation, liner notes by Brown historian Alan Leeds and never-before-published photos."

NEHLS, TOM I Always Catch The Third Second Of A Yellow Light 2CD
"A rock concept album, as progressive as it is psychedelic, recorded by a 17-year-old Tom Nehls and his high school friends in Minneapolis over a three-month period in late 1972. Nehls original notes describe his influences: The Beatles, Zappa, Tolkien. But that amalgamation cannot prepare you for the depths that this wunderkind explored with first-time engineer Paul Stark, who would later co-found Twin/Tone Records and sign and develop punk legends The Replacements and dozens of other bands. Stark privately-pressed 1000 copies of I Always Catch The Third Second Of A Yellow Light and gave them to Nehls, who hand glued photo copied artwork on the front and back cover of the album and tried to sell copies to his high school friends. Shortly thereafter, 900 copies were destroyed when his parents' basement flooded, Nehls went off to college, and his masterpiece was left, undiscovered and unappreciated, until fringe vinyl collectors in the early 1990s found and shared a handful of copies. Nehls' album has gone on to be a welcome addition to the genre Paul Major called 'Real People Music'; a wonderful and sincere exploration of the human predicament that reveals more of itself with each listen. Mastered from a flat transfer of Stark's original master tapes, this is the best that this album has ever sounded. The Now-Again Reserve Edition of I Always Catch The Third Second Of A Yellow Light possesses a fidelity that Nehls' rare original didn't." 2CD, fold out eco-wallet. SOFT ISSUES Soft Issues 12"
Soft Issues are an electronic two-piece, formed in 2017 in Leeds (UK) and influenced primarily by noise artists and hardcore punk. The band opts for a minimal approach from artwork to release schedules through to live setup, having released one self-titled EP in December 2017. Since their inception, Soft Issues have played a number of shows in the UK and throughout mainland Europe. Recent sets have focused on more rhythm-based music and the album strikes a balance between the first, harsh noise-based EP and more rhythmic qualities such as techno and beat-orientated industrial music.

EFDEMIN New Atlantis 2LP
Repressed; double LP version. "Oh, lovely appearance of death, No sight upon earth is so fair; Not all the gay pageants that breathe, Can with a dead body compare." --Charles Wesley, A Funeral Hymn for a Believer, 1780So begins New Atlantis, the fourth full-length album by longtime Berghain resident Efdemin, aka Phillip Sollmann. The words, sung by '60s California art icon William T. Wiley and embedded in glowing drone swells, set an otherworldly tone for Sollmann's first solo release on Ostgut Ton. Over eight tracks, New Atlantis oscillates between fast, kaleidoscopic techno, multi-layered drones, and acoustic instrumentation, fusing for the first time Sollmann's deep dancefloor productions as Efdemin with his sound art and experimental music projects. The latter include 2017's Harry Partch-inspired Monophonie performance and 2018's Panama / Suez EP with Oren Ambarchi and Konrad Sprenger (ATON 001EP, 2018). Long drawn to utopian musical traditions, Sollmann took inspiration for New Atlantis from Francis Bacon's unfinished 17th century novel of the same name, which describes a fictional island devoted to social progress through the synthesis of art, science, technology, and fashion. In the story, Bacon imagines futuristic "sound houses", which contain musical instruments capable of recreating the entirety of the sounds of the universe; a 400-year-old prophesy of today's digital sonic reality. Through Sollmann's lens, Bacon's vision ebbs and flows over 50 minutes in varying speeds and colors, emerging as a tapestry of different utopian musical traditions -- through billowing synth lines, early Detroit techno, resonant wooden percussion, trance, droning organs, dulcimer, electric guitars, hurdy-gurdy, just intonation, poetry, hymns, and murmuring voices. Sometimes they merge into epic, rhythmic journeys like the 14-minute long title track; other times they appear as a briefly open sound portal ("Temple"), or in the forlorn human voice on "Oh, Lovely Appearance Of Death", calling to be freed from jail of the human body and pass into the afterlife. Like previous Efdemin albums on Dial, New Atlantis veers off the techno path to explore other musical territory. Here however, Sollmann occasionally abandons the club entirely, returning only to push its boundaries with other instruments, mythologies and psychedelic story telling. Mastering by Rashad Becker at Dubplates & Mastering, Berlin.

PUCE MARY The Drought CD
Building from a reputation of arresting live performances and critically-acclaimed releases, Puce Mary breaks new ground with The Drought, evolving from the tropes of industrial and power electronics to forge a complex story of adapting to new realities. Remnants of noise still exist, sustaining the visceral penetration offered on previous records, however The Drought demonstrates an intention to expand on the vocabulary of confrontational music and into a grander narrative defined by technical and emotional growth. Bringing together introspective examination with literary frameworks by writers such as Charles Baudelaire and Jean Genet, Puce Mary's compositions manifest an ongoing power struggle within the self towards preservation. The traumatized body serves as a dry landscape of which obscured memories and escape mechanisms fold reality into fiction, making sense of desire, loss, and control. The Drought presents both danger and opportunity; through rebuilding a creative practice centered on first-person narrative and a deliberate collage of field recordings and sound sources Puce Mary injects an acute urgency across the album seeking resilience. "To Possess Is To Be In Control" makes use of lyrical repetition as an ambiguity of two selves, or a divided self, attempting to consume one another, while "Red Desert", named after Michelangelo Antonioni's 1964 film, portrays the individual subsumed by surrounding environmental forces. The seven-minute epic "The Size Of Our Desires" acts as the emotional tipping point of the record; amongst the ominous drone and dense feedback flutters almost-beatific melodies, while the lyrics reveal a romantic call to be swept up in the midst of an increasingly uninhabitable world. Rather than escape, The Drought dramatizes a metamorphosis in which vulnerability is confronted through regeneration. Noise and aggression no longer act as an affront to react against but part of a "corporeal architecture" where space, harmony and lyricism surface from the harsh tropes of industrial music. The Drought chronologizes the artist's transformation through a psychological famine, new ways of coping akin to plant survival in a desert -- to live without drying out. Features art by Torbjørn Rødland. Mastered by Rashad Becker at Dubplates & Mastering Berlin.

NORIKO, TUJIKO Kuro CD
Written and directed by Joji Koyama and Tujiko Noriko, Kuro tells the tale of Romi, a Japanese woman living in the suburbs of Paris with her paraplegic lover Milou. Tending to Milou by day and working in a karaoke bar by night, Romi reminisces about a time she and Milou once lived together in Japan with a mysterious ailing man named Mr. Ono. Weaving together personal history, anecdotes, and myths, her stories soon turn ominous. Composed and recorded during the editing of the film in Berlin, the Kuro OST by Tujiko Noriko (with contributions from Joji Koyama, Sam Britton, and Will Worsley), is a crucial and integral part of the film, acting not only as a glue to bind the layers of the film together, but along with the sonic palette of the film's sound design, evokes it's claustrophobic atmospheres and moments of haunting beauty. The music, which in the film is largely heard in tandem to the narrating voice of Tujiko Noriko (who also stars as Romi), is presented and arranged here as a separate piece in its own right. Written and produced by Tujiko Noriko. Photography by Joji Koyama. Mastered by Rashad Becker at Dubplates & Mastering, Berlin."When we first decided to 'split' the film into what might be described as two parallel layers -- the narrated story and the visual story -- we found that it opened up an 'in-between' space, a space where what is heard and seen continually wrestle with one another. We envisaged that the true setting of the film would emerge from this friction, as something imagined and projected by the audience. After a few screenings we were struck by how some audience members would refer to scenes or events in the film that, for us, did not take place... We both thought of the music of Kuro as a score to this space in-between." --Joji Koyama"I tried to think of the pieces in abstract terms, like moods and atmospheres. In a way, the process was quite similar to how I usually make music, in the sense that I have images in my head. Of course, in this case there were actual images and a lot of them very close to me, but I didn't want to get overly conscious about them either -- I didn't want to get stuck by trying to be too specific." --Tujiko Noriko

HELM Chemical Flowers CD
Luke Younger returns to PAN with an eight-track album of his most direct work to date. Composed alone at NO studio in the Essex countryside, to start an album with a piece called "Capital Crisis (New City Loop)" seems an intentional misnomer. Long, sustained periods in the rural studio setting see Younger working with an array of fragmented, disassociated sound sources to build upon 2015's Olympic Mess (PAN 063CD/LP). It shares a similarly inclined vision of the urban environment, but here Chemical Flowers makes reference to paradoxical notions of authenticity and creative practice by way of questioning the structures around us. Collages are assembled and dismantled, temporal and spatial boundaries fluctuate and movement is an overarching theme. Surrealist drowned world atmospheres sculpted far enough away from the source of inspiration leave plenty of room for ambiguity. The nocturnal nature of the recording process is self-evident, and pieces like "Leave Them All Behind" tap into a deep psychedelic undercurrent. Confused narratives, emotions and aleatory hallucinations ebb and flow throughout. "I Knew You Would Respond" evokes murky soundtrack terrain with eerie repetitive strings and ambient respite, disrupted periodically by brief bursts of granular noise. It's one of the records most unnerving moments, possibly as it's one of the most recognizably human. The album navigates dense passages with recurring signifiers. Hollow percussion, modulating delay and curious field recordings come and go, maintaining a perpetual state of flux where nothing stays the same for long. The drowned world theatricals return on the swamp-like "Lizard In Fear" whilst string rhythms creep in on the penultimate track to incite momentary electroacoustic harmony. Floating synthesis slowly washes over and the title track unfolds -- five minutes of reverb-laced portamento, visions of decay, and Editions EG influenced world-building. Movement is key. Chemical Flowers features string parts arranged and recorded by JG Thirlwell (Foetus, Manorexia, Xordox). Additional cello played by Lucinda Chua and saxophone by Karl D'Silva. Features artwork by Johannes Schnatmann and Bill Kouligas. Mastered by Rashad Becker.

ORNAMENT & VERBRECHEN Tapetopia 001 LP
In 1988, the legendary freak wave outfit Ornament & Verbrechen handed out some 20 to 30 copies of their Rotmaul-Tape to friends. The band, formed by the Lippok brothers, emerged from the first East Berlin punk group Rosa Extra and the avant-wave project Fünf Wochen im Ballon. From the moment of O&V's inception, the band was the wellspring for many acts that would subsequently branch off as tributaries and streams in the East Berlin underground music community. Bands like Aufruhr Zur Liebe and projects like Corp Cruid, The Local Moon and Bleibeil originated in the environment or from the collaboration with a band that functioned like an open house in the closed institution GDR. By 1995, To Rococo Rot and Tarwater had formed from this tried-and-tested framework, pursuing the template without copying it. After the GDR infarction in 1989, the project Ornament & Verbrechen continued to glow, sparking new ideas and flaring up again today. Edition of 500.Tapetopia is a series of vinyl releases based on cassettes from the East Germany's '80s underground, particularly from the East Berlin "Mauerstadt" music scene, featuring original lay-outs and track lists. For over 30 years after their initial "release" the music on these tapes was neither available on vinyl nor CD, but they were important statements in the canon of the GDR subculture. Despite the miniscule number of original cassettes in circulation at the time many of the bands were popular in countercultural circles, a factor that made them highly suspect among the government's own inner circles. Tapetopia is edited by Henryk Gericke.

GLEN Crack LP
Glen was formed in 2015 in Berlin, Germany, by multi-instrumentalist and film score composer Wilhelm Stegmeier and Greek visual artist, film maker and musician Eleni Ampelakiotou. Coming from a cinematic background, and having collaborated on several films and audio-visual projects, they created Glen as a prismatic multi-faceted musical persona, which cannot be easily assigned to a specific genre. Listening to just one track or even one part of a track can misguide the impression of this album, like seeing just one single frame of a movie. As a mostly instrumental band with classic line up of two guitars, bass and drums, Glen deconstructs popular and classical music genres scratching them together with experimental expression and attitude. Minimalistic tonal sequences develop gradually, to complex fugues, interlacing crystal clear guitars with eclectic distortion, vibrating overtones, and shimmering sounds. The wave-like structured compositions approach, break on a chorus, to curl up in free improv or dissolve into a rhythmic torso. Even the mainly choral vocals, that you hear on this album appear as one element of composition, adding the quality and nature of human voices to the sound sculpture. With a glimpse of irony Glen revises the supposedly light atmosphere of melodic fragments to a complex epic multilayered hypnotic structure of free improvisation and repetitive themes, breaking loose either to Dionysian chaos or escaping to poetic cinematic soundscapes. Adding layer by layer, Glen creates a synthesis of contrasting textures with different references to no wave NY, free improv, noise, doom, postrock, minimal music, as well as cinematic scores merging to a unique sound of colorful narratives and surprising mosaics of rhythmic dissonant chords, melodic patterns, and abstract noise.

BUNTE TRUPPE (FEAT. LIMPE FUCHS) Traumen Ohne Dinge LP
"As can be ascertained from the programmatic introduction, the group's name appears first, followed by the various musicians involved and their respective instruments. It might be worth mentioning when the Bunte Truppe was actually founded. The attentive reader will notice that Limpe Fuchs, Ruth-Maria Adam, Ignaz Schick, and Ronnie Oliveras started performing together in 2017 with a battery of percussion, wind and string instruments, as well as numerous electronic aids. At this point, it is extremely important to describe how such a colorful troupe can remain at the cutting edge of contemporary music, moving effortlessly between different musical genres with their improvisations. It goes without saying that this rather exaggerated claim assumes that the Bunte Truppe can challenge their audience in this way. But of course! Anything else worth mentioning? Attention could be drawn to historical contexts and other cultural connections, for example the fact that Limpe Fuchs has been around as a musician for God knows how long (for a time in the free improv duo Anima-Sound), and is widely known internationally; or that Ruth-Maria Adam and Ronnie Oliveras also go on the rampage with Datashock and the Flamingo Creatures; whilst Ignaz Schick rushes from one Artist in Residency to the other with a record player under his arm. These facts may or may not be important. Similarly, in order to put their music in perspective, it may or may not be helpful to draw comparisons with other international benchmarks. However, before we get lost in the labyrinth of music, let's rather prick up our ears and devote our attention to the astonishing sounds hiding in this recording: full of life and seemingly carefree, but (at the same time) always heedful of each other, the members of the Bunte Truppe start playing as free as a bird, and manage to unite apparently incompatible musical opposites without any effort. The material cannot be mastered, it has suffered enough already." --Holger Adam LP version comes in an edition of 500.

A SAGITTARIUN Return To Telepathic Heights LP
A Sagittariun's third album chronicles the journey back to "Telepathic Heights"; an expedition that encounters many obstacles along the way. The feuding parties of the two planets make for a journey of determination and self-discovery for our techno lone ranger that will ultimately deliver him to the sacred site on which "Telepathic Heights" stands. Conceived as a space western soundtrack to the cinematic interpretation of this tale, Return To Telepathic Heights delivers ten chapters that journal the ultimate mission to reach the imposing tower of "Telepathic Heights", where dream telepathy has become the primary communicative tool amongst its peaceful and harmonious community who have opted out of the planetary war that continues to rage, seemingly with no armistice anytime soon. The score fittingly winds its way through the trials and tribulations of this journey, blending minimal and harmonic rhythms, industrial funk, dreamy synth wave, and transcendental techno into the rich tapestry of music that documents the Return To Telepathic Heights. The album features original artwork by Johnny Bruck, fully licensed, and taken from the legendary German science fiction novel series, Perry Rhodan, which ran weekly from the early 1960s, and was the most successful sci-fi book series ever written. SINIGAGLIA, RICCARDO Ambient Music LP
Soave present a reissue of Riccardo Sinigaglia's Ambient Music, originally released in 1985. "Futuro Antico, the mesmerizing collaboration of Riccardo Sinigaglia with Walter Maioli and Gabin Dabirè evoked in its name the uncanniness of simultaneously witnessing past and future. Ambient Music, Riccardo Sinigaglia's first solo work -- recorded in Dec. 1984 and originally out on cassette from ADN Tapes in 1985 -- ultimately delivers on that idea, embodying different irreconcilable time frames not just in name. From our vantage point, the sounds of the two performances -- "Watertube" and "Ringspiel" -- appear as though they arrive to us from a past which we have great difficulty in recognizing and imagining ourselves coming from while simultaneously working as a projection of a future that is both our contemporaneity yet also surpasses it. It's this ability that Riccardo Sinigaglia's work has of being both rooted in its context while instantaneously capable of transcending our own that makes him one of the key figures of that explosion of beauty and creativity that defines the peculiar iteration of radical minimalism that characterized the experimental and avant-garde music scene in Italy, particularly the Milanese one with its rich countercultural scenes crossing over into the long reverberating academic legacy of the Studio di Fonologia Musicale RAI di Milano during a hyperactive decade starting in the late 1970s . . . 'Watertube' starts as a synth and magnetic-tape based ambient soundscape that slowly adds what appears to be a prepared piano which eventually competes for audibility with a phrase that evokes the titular watertube, treated, looped, and stacked as it phase-shifts producing a busy polyrhythm that asynchronously gurgles and bubbles, approaching but never breaking into chaos. It's some strange version of Eno's oblique discreetness ostensibly being overwhelmed by the perversity of a Steve Reich-ian shape-shifting pattern but the moment the former is about to be overwhelmed the composition begins a slow recession back towards the system it originated from. 'Ringspiel' is a more playful yet warped affair, a complex ecology rather than a simple economy of sounds. Opening with a whimsical melody seemingly played on a prepared toy piano this gives way to a tape loop punctuated throughout the rest of the piece by individual sounds whose origins remain uncertain. These produce scattered melodies that underscore an electronic based minimalism with a synthetic heart that nonetheless showcases a pulsating, wet, fibrous core that beats with organic life. It ends not in the opening whimsy but in fragmenting percussive shards of sounds..." --Peter Sarram/Rome, March 2019

Ciel's Spectral Sound debut, Why Me?, is a deeply personal and physical work. The cut's namesake is sourced from the foregrounded sample, a snippet of dialogue from an old film about a man who believes he's been abducted by aliens. Hardware-built tracks "Go Fish" and "Uri's Song" came together over studio time with friend and occasional collaborator Colin Sims, aka Wiretapping.

FLYING LIZARDS, THE The Secret Dub Life Of The Flying Lizards LP
2019 repress. Jah Lloyd meets David Cunningham on The Secret Dub Life Of The Flying Lizards from The Flying Lizards. These legendary recordings from 1978 are now available on vinyl for the first time."The source tapes for this LP were recorded in Jamaica by Jah Lloyd (Patrick Francis) as part of a series he made for Virgin Records' Front Line label. The original tapes were not released and were offered to me by Front Line's Jumbo Vanrennen with the suggestion that I should 'remix' the music. I accepted the project, expecting lots of time in one of Virgin's studios to play with the music and the equipment, only to be presented with a mono master tape. So I began to invent (or perhaps re-invent) techniques of editing, looping, filtering and subtraction to deal with unremixable mono material (these were the days before samplers). The subsequent work took a long time: as I thought it might be something of an indulgence, I worked on it at weekends and evenings rather than let it interfere with other projects. The techniques used here expanded my vocabulary of musical electronic (as opposed to electronic music) treatments and appear in a very different form on records made at that time, notably Fourth Wall, my collaboration with Patti Palladin, and my production work on Michael Nyman's records. The original players remain unidentified. Jah Lloyd used various combinations of musicians but did not include who played on which tracks." --David Cunningham, May 1995

MOUNT LIBERATION UNLIMITED Mount Liberation Unlimited 2x12"
Mount Liberation Unlimited are Tom and Niklas, two Swedes from space who have spent the last five years carving out a particularly vivid niche in contemporary electronic music. Their previous work has seen them connect with an impressive list of global dance powerhouses: New York's Beats In Space, Melbourne's Superconscious, and Munich's Permanent Vacation have all released 12" heat from the duo, while their hometown buddies at Studio Barnhus provided an outlet for what has been perhaps their biggest and boldest release yet, 2017's double smash single Double Dance Lover (BARN 050EP). Their live shows are fervent, fast-paced, and very multi-instrumental affairs, performed non-stop at an increasingly prestigious list of clubs and festivals, serving as prime examples of the MLU boys' core obsession: the interaction of human rhythm and electronic pulse. They have their own great little radio show on Gilles Peterson's Worldwide FM, Australia loves them, and they got their artist friend Tom-Hadar Elde to sculpt their heads for their debut album cover. This self-titled debut on Studio Barnhus has been in progress since the very formation of the MLU project in 2014. It contains some of their earliest work and of course their very latest -- all perfected at the Neve desk of legendary Gothenburg studio Svenska Grammofonstudion, in cahoots with mix engineer Christoffer Berg (Depeche Mode, Robyn, Fever Ray). The result is a sonically fascinating, endlessly generous, and straight-up fun record that takes the listener on a joyride through bittersweet stoner disco, frenzied Scando-kraut jams, and some of the sweetest dance pop to come out of Sweden this side of "Super Trouper".

HAMASE, MOTOHIKO Intaglio LP
2019 repress; LP version. Studio Mule present a re-recording of Motohiko Hamase's Intaglio, recorded in Japan, 2018. Originally released in 1986. Currently the rediscovery of long-forgotten Japanese electronic, jazz, and new age music is at a peak like never before. Although many reissues have already hit record stores, the large, diverse musical culture of Japan still got some gems in store that are really missing. For example, the work of Japanese bass player, new age and ambient musician Motohiko Hamase. When the now 66-year old artist started to be a professional musician in the 1970s, he quickly gained success as a versed studio instrumentalist and started to be part of the great modern jazz Isao Suzuki Sextet where he played with legends like pianist Tsuyoshi Yamamoto or fusion guitar one-off-a-kind Kazumi Watanabe. He was also in the studio when legendary Japanese jazz records like Straight Ahead of Takao Uematsu (1977), Moritato For Osada of jazz singer Minami Yasuda (1978), or Moon Stone of synthesizer, piano, and organ wizard Mikio Masuda (1978) were recorded. In the 1980s Hamase began to slowly drift away from jazz and drowned his musical vision in new age, ambient, and experimental electronic spheres in which he incorporated his funky meditative way of playing the bass above airy sounds and arrangements. His first solo album Intaglio is not only a milestone of Japanese new age ambient, it is also a fresh sonic journey in jazz that does not sound like jazz at all. First issued by the Japanese label Shi Zen, the record had a decent success in Japan and by some overseas fans of music from the far east. With seven haunting, stylistically hard-to-pigeonhole compositions, Hamase drifts around new age worlds with howling wind sounds, gentle bass pickings, and discreet drums that mind remind listeners of the power of Japanese taiko percussions. Also, propulsive fourth-world-grooves call the tune and all compositions avoid a foreseeable structure. At large his albums seem to be improvised and yet are deeply composed. Music that works like shuffling through an imaginary sound library full of spiritual deepness, that even spreads, in its shaky moments, some profound relaxing moods. The release marks another highlight in Studio Mule's mission to excavate neglected Japanese music that somehow has more to offer in the present age than at the time of his original birth.

VA Midnight In Tokyo Vol. 3 2LP
Repressed; Double LP version. Midnight In Tokyo is a compilation series that aims to be the perfect companion to nights in Tokyo, collecting tracks by Japanese artists that sound best at night. Vol. 2 (STUDIOMUL 006CD/LP, 2018) focused more on '80s jazz fusion, but the latest installment, Vol. 3, picks up where Vol. 1 (STUDIOMUL 001CD/LP, 2018) left off, bringing together forgotten soul, disco, and new wave gems. The compilation opens with Japanese rare groove classic "More Sexy," a provocative song by Yoko Hatanaka. "Kimi No Yume," from the album Yume No Yonbai (1984) by Masumi Hara, is one of the best Balearic acid folk songs to come from Japan. "Silhouette Call" is an electric bossanova track in the vein of Antena, from a rare album called Octopussy (1982) by Yuki Nakayamate, a singer-songwriter who worked with Motoharu Sano. "Theme Of High School Student" is a dubby cut featured in the Japanese film Kougen Ni Ressha Ga Hashitta (1984), written by Atsuo Fujimoto (Colored Music), one of the key artists in the recent wave of global interest in Japanese music. "Get To Paradise" is a stone-cold funk jam by Mari Kaneko, who was known as the Janis Joplin of Shimokitazawa. Following that is one of Japan's greatest new wave disco tracks, "Hannya", taken from Tomoko Aran's popular third album Fuyu-Kukan (1983) produced by Masatoshi Nishimura, who was part of Friends Of Earth with Haruomi Hosono. Masako Miyazaki, whose rendition of Seawind's "He Loves You" is a fan favorite, puts her own spin on Earth, Wind & Fire's "Fantasy," singing in her accent-heavy English, giving the song an undeniable character. "Watashi No Koukoku" is a certified disco-boogie classic by Junko Sakurada. The Brazilian-esque jazz fusion, "Sunshine Bright On Me" is by fusion group Kangaroo, who were often billed as "the japanese Shakatak". "Stranger's Night" is a synth-pop number by Maiko Okamoto, which bears a suspicious resemblance to Rah Band's "The Shadow Of Your Love". Electro-pop disco "Singing Lady", off the sole album by The Fad sounds like something Giorgio Moroder could've cooked up. "Magic Eyes" is a disco anthem recorded by Tetsuji Hayashi's disco project, The Eastern Gang. Following that is Japanese soul gem "Crazy Baby," found on a rare 7" entitled Minato No Soul by Rinda Yamamoto also composed and arranged by Tetsuji Hayashi. Closing out this collection of 14 Japanese rare groove goodies is "I'm In Love", a bittersweet mellow dance number by Tomoko Aran.

FLESH EATERS, THE A Minute to Pray A Second to Die LP
2019 repress. "The Flesh Eaters is the name behind one Chris Desjardins a.k.a. Chris D. Taking his stage name from a 1964 cult film, Chris D. wrote for legendary fanzine Slash in the late '70s and assembled the first of many Flesh Eaters lineups from heavyweights in the burgeoning L.A. punk scene. After releasing a ravenous EP and heart-ripping debut album, The Flesh Eaters unleashed their era-defining statement, A Minute to Pray A Second to Die. Originally released in 1981, A Minute to Pray brings together the greatest band in American rock history: Dave Alvin (Blasters) on guitar, John Doe (X) on bass, Steve Berlin (Los Lobos) on sax, along with Bill Batemen (Blasters) and DJ Bonebrake (X) providing the album's trademark percussive backbone. Chris D. leads the group like a man possessed. Through a series of grotesque vignettes, his lyrical prowess and indelible growl stand toe-to-toe with the music's powerful shifts. From opener 'Digging My Grave' (resembling a diesel-charged Magic Band) to the gothic groove of 'Divine Horsemen,' each song is its own hairy beast. Inspired by African tribal music, '60s garage-rock churn and Funhouse-era Stooges swing, A Minute to Pray remains (according to author / archivist Byron Coley) 'the best rock record ever recorded.' This first-time vinyl reissue has been carefully remastered and features liner notes by Coley. Without a doubt, The Flesh Eaters will hypnotize a new flock of listeners in this millennium."

GORAGUER, ALAIN La Planete Sauvage LP
2019 repress. "Animated sci-fi masterpiece La Planète Sauvage (aka Fantastic Planet), winner at Cannes Film Festival in 1973, is a bizarre and beautiful film. Towering blue-skinned figures, tiny humanoids in the midst of revolt, and drug-induced Tantric sex transport viewers to a truly magical setting. Composer Alain Goraguer creates an equally hypnotic score from a palette of effects-laden guitars, flutes, Fender Rhodes, and strings. While the lush arrangements are reminiscent of Goraguer's collaborations with Serge Gainsbourg in the 1960s, space-age synth flourishes suggest a more psychedelic era. Moody vignettes flow together in tense, slow-paced funk rhythms and Baroque textures. It comes as no surprise that La Planète Sauvage has been cited as an influence on contemporary artists such as French duo Air and American hip-hop producers J Dilla and Madlib. Gorgeous, interplanetary soundscapes resemble the surreal meeting point between Pink Floyd's Obscured by Clouds and Broadcast's Future Crayon. This long out-of-print vinyl release features the original soundtrack recording and newly designed artwork. Recommended for fans of Ennio Morricone, Basil Kirchin, and David Axelrod."

LOVISONI/FRANCESCO MESSINA, RAUL Prati Bagnati Del Monte Analogo LP
2019 repress. "Of all the releases on Italy's legendary Cramps Records, Raul Lovisoni and Francesco Messina's seminal LP from 1979 has long remained among the most beloved. Prati Bagnati Del Monte Analogo not only introduced the world to the work of two gifted composers, but also is notable for being produced by electronic pioneer Franco Battiato. A sister album to Prati Bagnati would be Giusto Pio's breathtaking Motore Immobile, likewise graced with the maestro's gentle hand around the same time. Lovisoni and Messina are both central figures within the Italian avant-garde. Part of a generation of artists who contributed to a radical rethinking of musical practices and composition, they reveal Minimalism as it's rarely known: delicate melodies, subtle harmonic interplay, incorporating diverse creative traditions and slowly giving way to an ever-expanding open space. Prati Bagnati Del Monte Analogo's meditative title track, inspired by René Daumal's surrealist novel Le Mont Analogue, features Messina on synthesizer and Michele Fedrigotti's impressionistic piano, while on Lovisoni's 'Hula Om' and 'Amon Ra,' solo harp, crystal glasses and Juri Camisasca's radiant vocal drones further ascend into the stratosphere. Skirting the outer edges of ambient, new age and experimental music, Prati Bagnati has a transformative beauty unlike anything else. Superior Viaduct's edition reproduces the original sleeve design and is recommended for fans of Jon Hassell, Luciano Cilio and Popol Vuh."

BROWN, MARION Three for Shepp LP
"In 1966, when Marion Brown was ready to make his first record as a leader, he was standing on the shoulders of giants. Formative associations with Ornette Coleman and Sun Ra established Brown as a saxophonist to watch, and he had already appeared on free jazz landmarks Archie Shepp's Fire Music and John Coltrane's Ascension. Originally released on Impulse!, Brown's debut lays down three startling originals and three tunes by Shepp -- echoing his mentor's 1964 homage to Coltrane, Four For Trane. Featuring Grachan Moncur III on trombone, Dave Burrell on piano and Norris 'Sirone' Jones on bass, Three for Shepp balances fiery energy and delicate precision. Side A showcases Brown compositions that mix modal structures with ecstatic playing, particularly when the bandleader chases Moncur and Burrell on the exhilarating 'The Shadow Knows.' On the album's all-Shepp side, 'West India' draws inspiration from India and Africa, while the feverish post-bop of 'Delicado' demonstrates the band's versatility, swept by the wheeling drums of Beaver Harris. Even this early in his career, Brown stood apart from his peers in 'the new thing.' His solos were as gentle as they were furious. Informed by the African American folk traditions of his native Georgia and an enthusiastic embrace of the avant-garde, his music would confront and challenge society. As Brown says in the original liner notes, 'The music is definitely a part of what's going on in the black revolution in America.' Three for Shepp still sounds crucial today (over 50 years later) and remains a vital statement of jazz's past, present and future."

THIS KIND OF PUNISHMENT In The Same Room LP
"With This Kind Of Punishment, Graeme Jefferies and Peter Jefferies produced some of most adept DIY sounds to emerge from New Zealand's 1980s post-punk scene. After their phenomenal self-titled debut and classic A Beard Of Bees, the brothers would make one last album together, In The Same Room. Originally released in 1987 on Flying Nun, In The Same Room is perhaps the straightest rock offering in TKP's esteemed catalogue. Opening track 'Immigration Song' expertly pairs jagged guitars with wrathful vocals -- resulting in one of the most celebrated moments in their recording career -- while 'Don't Go' puts the full breadth of the Jefferies brothers' method on display: spiraling riffs, somber baritone and chamber-like calm give way to frenzied rhythms and antagonistic lyrics. From deeply insular songwriting to hands-on production, This Kind Of Punishment draw the listener in close -- nearly within the same room as the players -- and remain rooted in a distinct approach to presentation that is inseparable from their music."

DAVIS, GARY A Taste Of Chocolate: The Very Best Of 2LP
Double LP version. "Straight outta Camden, NJ it's Chocolate Star. Starting in 1980, Chocolate Star served as the outlet for the music of Gary Davis. Gary started Chocolate Star with his long time Camden compatriot Dennis 'DJ' Jones after a few years spent under the wing of Peter Brown at P&P Records. But Gary's storied involvement in music goes back further than that, having studied composition and arrangement with the late jazz great Manny Albam. Gary's musical education actually started earlier than that as one of the people he learned the most from was his uncle, famed jazz organist Richard 'Groove' Holmes. When you combined the funk Mr. Davis inherited from 'Groove', with the street-sense of Peter Brown with the skillful composition and arrangements learned from Manny Albam, you've got Chocolate Star. Playing with a band composed of (very talented) people from his Camden neighborhood Davis released cut after cut of solid funk filled dance music. They're all compiled here, from the Joe Sample-inspired 'Gee Dee', to one of first commercial releases to lay the beat down with a drum machine in "The Pop". Of course prominently featured is the legendary mover 'Gotta Get Your Love.' A Taste Of Chocolate: The Very Best of Gary Davis has been assembled with Mr. Davis and whenever possible using Gary's original masters. These cuts bridge the disco era, into hip hop and the earliest forms of house. Talented, versatile, and still able to get you out of your chair and shaking your behind...this is Chocolate Star. Trunk Records presents a reissue of Vernon Elliott's Clangers: The Original Television Soundtrack. Out of print since its original release on CD in 2001, a classic Trunk Records release gets a rare repress; this is naïve and pastoral space music at its very best. In 2001 Jonny Trunk started working with Oliver Postgate and his Smallfilms archive. The first music issued was the unreleased music from all 26 episodes of Clangers. To create the soundtrack, all music was originally "drawn" by Postgate -- sketched out in graphic form on the original scripts. This was then translated by his good friend and regular musical collaborator Elliott into the music we know and love. It was all recorded in a village hall in Kent in the late 1960s and released originally in 2001 by Jonny Trunk, garnering a mass of fine reviews including a full 5 stars from NME. Listening today, these recordings have lost none of their naivety and charm, and the Clangers soundtrack remains a seminal work of both TV and intergalactic musical history. Album produced by Jonny Trunk. Full color sleeve with notes included.

Having released a slew of singles and an LP on various DIY labels in the US and the UK at the turn of this decade, London post-punk stalwarts Hygiene return from hiatus with their sophomore effort, Private Sector. Where their debut LP Public Sector (2011) reflected a nostalgic longing for an unrealized socialist modernist utopia, Private Sector finds them confronting the grim realities of the present, Hygiene rail against the neoliberal madness of utility cartels, tax havens, and privatized railways, seizing the moment as the current period of interregnum sees the old ideological certainties come into question. Proving nostalgia to be an inescapable trap, the band continue to hearken back to the kind of post-punk that existed before anybody knew to affix the "post" prefix. Private Sector has the signature Hygiene sound, mixing brooding melodies with a choppy, aggressive approach, and a restricted pop sensibility. However, this ever-so-slightly-more mature record finds the band taking advantage of the musicianship of their friends, mixing in the odd viola, glockenspiel, piano and keyboard. Recommended for fans of Real Ale, British Rail Class 55 Deltics, Euston station, and Jeremy Corbyn. Edition of 500.

LIGFAERD Den Ildrode Konge LP
LP version. Danish black metal. Originally formed in 2000 under the name Hrapp and several demos later, it was in 2005 when the Danish black metal trio changed its name into Ligfaerd. Following a line-up change, numerous EPs, splits as well as two full-length albums, live appearances such as at Metal Magic Festival, the band quickly began to receive high praise in the underground black metal scene. In the band's tradition the lyrics do not only come in Danish, with Den Ildrøde Konge, Ligfaerd are continuing their path on the darkest art of metal and deliver a fierce beast of pure evil, the band's strongest and most compelling work to date.

BRUBECK, DAVE Brubeck Time LP
Wax Love presents a reissue of Brubeck Time by Dave Brubeck. Originally released in 1955, Brubeck Time is a rare studio recording from that period of the band, when it was recording mostly live albums. It was recorded in the fall of 1954, features one of the earlier Quartet lineups, with Bob Bates on bass and Joe Dodge on drums. Although now not as famous as some of the band's other albums, in retrospect it has a lot of depth, and those interested in jazz will find it certainly worth acquiring.

BRUBECK, DAVE Reunion LP
Reunion is an interesting and obscure 1957 album from the Dave Brubeck quartet featuring alto sax giant Paul Desmond, bassist Bob Dates and the great Joe Morello on drums. Here, one of the most famous groups in the history of jazz is augmented by tenor saxophonist Dave Van Kreidt. All the music is composed by Van Kreidt and the overall sound is very different from the classic Brubeck set-up. This is classical-influenced West Coast jazz and unlike anything else in the Brubeck discography.

YANO, AKIKO Iroha Ni Konpeitou LP
LP version. Obi strip; Includes insert. Wewantsounds present a reissue of Akiko Yano's Iroha Ni Konpeitou, originally released in 1977. Another superb Akiko Yano album and one of her funkiest, highlighting her singing and songwriting talents. Iroha Ni Konpeitou is perhaps Akiko Yano's best-known album in the Western world not just because of its striking front cover -- a shot by famed photographer Bishin Jumonji featuring Akiko holding an inflatable dolphin. A slick mix of Japanese pop and New York funk, the album was recorded in Tokyo except for the title track which was recorded in NYC with an all-star line-up consisting of Rick Marotta, David Spinozza, Will Lee, and Nicky Marrero. For the rest of the album, Akiko is accompanied by some of the best musicians from the Tokyo music scene gravitating around the groups Happy End and Tin Pan Alley: the ubiquitous Haruomi Hosono on bass, Tatsuo Hayashi on drums, Shigeru Suzuki on guitar, to name just a few. Interestingly, two Hosono compositions are featured on the album: "Ai Ai Gasa" which he recorded on his 1973 landmark debut Hosono House and "Hourou" originally recorded in '75 by singer and musician Chu Kosaka, on the eponymous album Horo. Last but not least, Hideki Matsutake is handling the keyboard programming duties on the album as Yano is playing a wide array of keyboards: Moog IIIc, Mini Moog, String Ensemble, on top of the Fender Rhodes, Clavinet, and Yamaha CP7C. Matsutake would soon become programmer in chief for Yellow Magic Orchestra, touring and playing with them around the world (like Yano herself). Although the album feels very accessible and funky, there are complex keyboard layers underneath as on the first short introduction "KAWAJI", a short electro fantasy, or on such tracks as "Ai Ai Gasa" and "Kino Wa Mou" on which Akiko is playing bass with her Moog, making the album a richly textured and inventive one once you scratch its surface. The tracks on the album flow effortlessly also highlighting Akiko Yano's superb songwriting and knack for creating fascinating pop song. "Iroha Ni Konpeitou" sounds as fresh and beautiful as when it first came out more than forty years ago and will please the growing circle of Akiko Yano fans around the world as a welcome addition to her brilliant discography. Remastered sound. First release outside of Japan.
