CLAIM, THE The New Industrial Ballads CD
There is no English or British equivalent of Americana. If there were it might sound something like The New Industrial Ballads and The Claim would be seen as one of the originators of the genre. That doesn't mean an English group playing American music. This is a group of musicians making a beautiful and original hybrid that channels the root ingredients of classic English guitar music -- folk (Bert Jansch, Nick Drake), thoughtful, melodic pop (Michael Head, Ray Davies), and angular, politically-tinged pop (Paul Weller, Elvis Costello, Wolfhounds), into something that is contemporary and original. A recent feature in El País, Spain's biggest selling newspaper, described the band's reissued 1988 album Boomy Tella (TURN 064CD/LP) as the missing link between the Kinks and Blur. The New Industrial Ballads presents the group's first new recordings since 1992. It is how the group sound 30 odd years later if they'd continued to play and develop, rather than quit. The idea behind The New Industrial Ballads is to celebrate the noble tradition (the lineage of which runs through folk, ballads, skiffle, the Kinks, to punk and beyond) of ordinary people singing about everyday concerns and the issues of the day that impact on working lives. Three quick examples: "Journey" is about economic migration, the characters involved, the need to fight passionately for a fight the right of all to move to work; In "Estuary Greens And Blues", David Read reflects on the passing years and a changing industrial landscape as he walks the shore of the Thames estuary; "30 Years" is a collaboration with writer Vic Templar who narrates a poignant and prescient tale contrasts mankind's inability to progress politically and spiritually with technological advances (this is a follow-up to The Claim's cult classic "Mike The Bike", released on Bob "Saint Etienne" Stanley's Caff label in 1990). In the group's earlier period (1985-92) they secured "Single of the Week" in Melody Maker (Loser's Corner), received an 8/10 in NME for their album (Boomy Tella) and received regular airplay on John Peel and Andy Kershaw. The Manic Street Preachers, who used to write The Claim long love letters, performed their first ever London show supporting The Claim.

DEN HEYER, PAUL Everything So Far CD
Liverpool's Paul Den Heyer: after auditioning for Magazine and Spizz Energi and playing in a string of local bands, his initial fifteen minutes finally came in the '90s with Fishmonkeyman. Probably best known for the indie-hit "If I've Told You Once" which led to deals with Warner Bros. and Virgin Music and put the band on TV, radio, and the road. More recently known as producer for Sunstack Jones and member of The Red Sided Garter Snakes with ex-members of The Chameleons, Bauer, Puressence, and Inspiral Carpets. Everything So Far is the first release under his own name, made with the help of good friends and featuring songs recorded in summertime on the leisure peninsula. With hints to Mojave 3 or Mazzy Star, with The Byrds even shining through, Paul Den Heyer creates moody acoustic landscapes and melodic miniatures with fantastic harmonies and a rich set of instrumentation. He describes the style as "Britanicana" and indeed his music blends British folk songwriting with '60s/'70s American psych-pop.

VIGROUX, FRANCK Totem CD
Aesthetical present Totem, the new full-length album by France's most singular contemporary composer, Franck Vigroux. Reflecting on ancient culture's use and reverence for emblematic monuments which most often represent myths and stories, the album's narrative has been infused with such symbolic and depicts an envisioned mythology, unfolding through its ten aural pieces. Franck Vigroux's music is unique and comprised of tectonic tension, pulsating rhythms, and abrasive analog textures like few can produce. Applying his own calculated personal signature in his sonic explorations his distinctiveness comes not only by his unique approach to sound but also by his incorporation of new media practices and performing arts into his A/V work. Mastered by Denis Blackham. CD version comes in a four-panel digipak; edition of 500.

RENEGADES OF JAZZ Nevertheless 2LP
Double LP version. Gatefold sleeve. Were David Hanke to pass on from this mortal coil tomorrow, Nevertheless might prove his perfect epitaph. It's a refreshingly honest and autobiographical album that harks back to his early twenty first century musical influences but actually has its route much earlier in this self-styled "Renegade Of Jazz"'s life. The album's appellation refers back to Hanke's first live concert experience when in 1984, at the age of six, he went to see a blues-rock band called Nevertheless whose guitarist was none other than his own father. With music clearly already running through Hanke's DNA, this was the moment that, perhaps subconsciously, triggered his life-long love affair with soulful sonic creativity. Nevertheless sparks into action with the irresistibly uplifting "Lemon Squeezers," a suitably life-affirming opener complete with exhilarating guitars and as the man tells us, "(the) basic characteristic, the beat!" and it's a rock-solid beat at that. With some Renegades Of Jazz trademark horns added for extra spice, and of course everything programmed by Hanke himself, this is the perfect introduction to his scintillating style. "Big Fish" continues the brass obsession -- it has a more sonorous, almost big band feel, even though it is being delivered solely by one pair of hands and that singular, special musical brain. Hanke adds some nifty piano work for extra cheekiness, a theme continued on "Another Day (Going In Too Deep)," where Hammond-style keys and perfectly chosen vocal samples do battle with more foot-friendly beats, before going deep with Afro-flavored licks and horn riffs. The title track starts life as something of a moment of calm with a more introspective feel, but not for long as it makes way for more trademark beats and vocal loops, and more of those irresistible horns! It's the prelude for a watershed moment on the album as Hanke introduces his first guest in the shape of Bristolian rapper Donnie Numeric (one half of Delegates Of Rhyme) on the scorching "Hot Wired." It's the perfect illustration of our producer's love for the hip-hop art form, and Donnie's smooth lyrical flow combines with those Renegades Of Jazz brass and guitar riffs to make more demands to move one's feet.

MATTA, RAMUNTCHO 96 LP
LP version. Gatefold sleeve; includes download code. The poet, producer, and visual artist Ramuntcho Matta comes back to music with 96. 96 -- as in 96 hours were needed to record this new album. Ramuntcho points out that behind this dazzling recording, years of experience enabled him to achieve the mix of spontaneity and intimacy of the album. He was the man behind the success of Elli Medeiros's "Toi Mon Toit" (1986). As a matter of fact, Ramuntcho Matta likes to put artists in the spotlight, as he has done with Brion Gysin, Don Cherry, and many others. However, this time he decided to put himself in the spotlight with a record that sounds very '90s -- with a wink to Bill Laswell for the bass -- but still very contemporary. The album unveils a dark atmosphere, as if Alain Bashung had lost himself in a Lynch film. Record sleeve designed by Ramuntcho Matta. Unpublished notes and drawings from the artist's logbook Desseins Du Jour.

2019 repress. Featuring sublime and unhinged music rarely heard outside of Northern Greece and Southern Albania, the performances presented in this collection span the range of plaintive, ancient dirges to hypnotic, droning dance pieces. A deep set of notes in a 12-page booklet is accompanied by comprehensive lyrical translations as well as original artwork by R. Crumb. WILLEMS & JEAN D.L., KAREN Twee Lindebomen CD
Aurora Borealis returns once more to Belgium, with the release of Twee Lindebomen by the duo of experimental drummer/percussionist Karen Willems and avant guitarist Jean D.L. After recording their album Lyra (2017) and playing various concerts since then, Karen Willems and Jean D.L. sought to explore their duo in a different context, searching for new modes of harmony between acoustic and electric performance disciplines. The duo were able to discover this new territory with the opportunity to record in the church of Saint Nicholas in Le Roeulx, Belgium, the village where Jean grew up. Recorded live over the course of a two-day long session last summer, the mystic atmosphere of the church provides a touch point for the musical explorations on the album. Using the echo and natural reverb of the architecture gave the duo new challenges. Space forms an important part of the duo's work, as they respond to each setting and its unique architecture, both physical and acoustic. "The reverb in the church gave us an extra force and a spatial element. We were able to play with distance and movement," says Willems. "It was a different way of playing, and we thrive on that, the uniqueness of the moment." The album covers eight diverse tracks of improvisational interplay between Willem's drums, free percussion with vocalization, and D.L.'s palette of guitar work and tape manipulation. Twee Lindebomen captures the duo at the height of their flow, seamlessly working together to create a highly expressive and emotive album. Artwork by Belgian artist Alexandra Crouwers. Six-panel digifile; edition of 200.

SHE KEEPS BEES Kinship CD
"A meditative and endlessly turning clutch of songs, She Keeps Bees' Kinship reasserts the band's elegant power in a stream of loss and regeneration. Death, birth, both personal and in reflection of Earth itself emerge through Jessica Larrabee's focused, empowered voice. With Larrabee and Andy LaPlant's first album in four years, She Keeps Bees peels away their distorted guitars and fills the void with hypnotic organ, keyboards, strings, a tight bed of drum grooves, and a direct lyricism full of with wisdom and intention. This is an album that radiates its messages with deft knowledge and immeasurable strength. Since 2014's acclaimed Eight Houses, Larrabee cared for and lost her father before moving upstate with LaPlant to a New York cottage with a plan to start their own family. In this new, solitary and natural environment, they wrote and recorded this album over five months, joined by friends Kevin Sullivan (Last Good Tooth) on bass, Penn Sultan (Last Good Tooth) for guitar, and Eric Maltz, who lent strings, synthesizers and piano. Kinship addresses chaos by pointing beyond it, to the order that exists outside one's reach. As the duo settle upstate and begin planting roots for their future life together, She Keeps Bees have taken the long view and written odes to the irrevocable primacy of Nature."

DOHENY, NED Prone LP
2015 release. Be With Records present the first ever officially licensed reissue of Ned Doheny's Prone, originally released in Japan only in 1979. Aficionados rate Ned Doheny's Prone as his finest achievement. This sophisticated masterpiece has been unavailable on vinyl for over 35 years, so Be With Records pressed it on audiophile 180 gram vinyl and restored the original Japanese artwork for both jacket and classic lyric-insert. Featuring the superior full-vocal version of "To Prove My Love". Ned Doheny's crowning glory, even better than the superlative Hard Candy (1976). So quite why this AOR/soft-funk gem has not been available legitimately on vinyl for over 35 years is anyone's guess. A forgotten-funk classic. What makes this release truly special is the inclusion of the full-vocal version of jazz-funk classic "To Prove My Love". It's what you've all been waiting for. Produced again by the legendary Steve Cropper, Prone's super-smooth grooves showcase Ned's beautifully laid-back vocals, virtuoso playing and forever-wry lyricism. Aside from "To Prove My Love", it boasts some of Doheny's most under-appreciated tracks: witness the slickness of "Think Like A Lover", "Guess Who's Lookin' For Love Again", and "Funky Love". 180 gram vinyl; Features the original artwork for both jacket and lyric-insert.

CYPRIANO, NOHELANI Nohelani LP
2015 release. Be With Records present a reissue of Nohelani Cypriano's Nohelani, originally released in 1979. A cult Hawaiian rare groove record. Featuring the mighty "Lihue", "Island Boy", and "Mystery Blue", this album has been at the top of wants-lists across the globe for decades. Be With Records' reissue has been produced in collaboration with Honolulu's Aloha Got Soul and has been carefully mastered for vinyl by Simon Francis (Claremont 56 mastering engineer). Pressed on audiophile 180 gram vinyl for the first time, it features the original artwork. Riding high on the crest of the global love for Hawaiian "Island Funk". The album's irresistible blend of tropical-tinted soul, funk, and rare groove sounds every bit as fresh today as it would've in 1979. Perhaps the most sought-after record of its type, locating a vinyl copy of Nohelani would previously have set you back a small fortune. Her records are something of a Balearic holy grail, with this album the holiest of the lot. Original copies are in such short supply -- trading for upwards of £100 on secondary markets --it's easy to see why news of this first ever reissue has been welcomed by so many. A record to surrender to in full rather than consume in pieces, it pivots around centerpiece "Island Boy". A record of many colors, the LP is at once spaced-out boogie and sweet soul. The legendary "Lihue" is worth the entry fee alone. A gloriously carefree showcase of a uniquely Hawaiian musical hybrid, this reissue provides a vital reminder of just how beautiful and important Nohelani is.

MINOGUE, KYLIE Kylie Minogue 2LP
2016 release. Be With Records present the first ever vinyl reissue of Kylie Minogue's self-titled album, originally released in 1994. Deluxe limited edition; Double-LP, 180 gram vinyl presented in a sumptuous gatefold jacket, allowing the iconic Rankin portraits room to breathe. Beloved by perfect pop fans, this is Kylie's most sought-after record. Originally released in 1994, Kylie Minogue represents the fun '90s pop acts had in absorbing an increasingly diverse range of influences -- from house and ambient to Balearic and R&B. Beloved by perfect pop fans, this is Kylie's most sought-after record; finding a decent copy on vinyl will set you back well over £150. After phenomenal chart success in the late '80s and early '90s with the PWL Records hit factory, Kylie desired greater artistic freedom and critical credibility. Her move to dance music label deConstruction, and its commendable hands-off attitude, marked this profound shift in thinking and enabled the singer to make the album she really wanted. Indeed, Kylie Minogue is a sophisticated collection of stylish songs that elegantly reference new jack swing, R&B ballads, ambient pop and piano house. String-drenched epic "Confide In Me" (produced by acclaimed dance duo, Brothers in Rhythm) confidently sets the tone whilst "Surrender", a seductive sunset slow jam, unwittingly anticipates the voguish Balearic pop of the past decade. Jazzy pop-R&B groovers keep things moving but it's the masterful "Put Yourself In My Place" -- in all its understated melancholy -- that stops listeners in their tracks. Widely regarded as her finest downtempo moment, the monster single recalled late '80s American R&B but, having never received a proper vinyl release, its inclusion here is worth the price of admission alone. Further orchestral ballads, subtly cinematic pieces, and minor key house tracks (with the involvement of the Pet Shop Boys and acid house stalwarts Farley & Heller) serve to complete an assured collage of accessible yet resolutely eclectic "perfect pop". Over 20 years on, Kylie Minogue remains quietly revered and relevant today. Fellow Aussie group Tame Impala covered the pop juggernaut "Confide In Me".

DSR LINES Venndiagram LP
David Edren confirms himself as a cosmic courier and wizard of synths with the organic electronic music included in Venndiagram. Released for the first time on LP, it appeared only on tape in 2013. The sound remains a pure balance between vibrating oscillations, modular frequencies, and rhythmic pulsations, but the general imagery changes. The main theme is the intersection of circular and geometric shapes and the minimal and clear notion which they represent. Edren imagines reverberated coordinates of galactic sines and cosines, interprets sounds and distortions as trajectories, melodic patterns like pyramidal plastic inter-penetrations. All is led by a primitive impulse to the combination of lines, shapes, figures, ropes or tangents, diameters, squares or triangles. Along these inter-zonal paths, he forges rare atmospheres full of enveloping spherical and spiraling sounds, luminous and radiant in their hypnotic aura, or magnificently ecstatic and ascensional. It's much more than math or geometry, but an alternative visionary way to conceive the world (maximal and minimal) in other manifestations of space and time.

SINIGAGLIA & TRIO CAVALAZZI, RICCARDO In Fa LP
In Fa is an enchanting meeting of phantasmagorical improvisation, a dialogue between two generations that makes every expressive boundary overcome. Riccardo Sinigaglia (Futuro Antico) remains faithful to the idea of a collective work, where musicians are only instruments crossed by musical energy. He provides his pioneering experience, with excellent control of electronic sounds, realized with the eternal cosmic Farfisa and the synths (Moog Sonic Six, Synthi EMS). Their lysergic fluidity supports the whole architecture of the music. Trio Cavalazzi's young sensibility, for their part, gives an intrepid chamber touch to the whole. The impressive versatility of revisiting and stylistic recreation of their strings (minimalism, avant-garde, orient) might recall, in their occult formal abstractionism, the esoteric glories of the Third Ear Band. Thus, their sharp and radial trajectories create a parallel and alienating acoustic dimension. It's the space of a magical synergy, a successful fusion towards the development of a new and futuristic chamber music.

It's the investigation of an organic symbiosis, real and mysterious at the same time, between the pharmacological properties of the plant and the sound emitted by the same material essence. From the single natural element comes the vibration permeating the whole universe; an indissoluble binomial for which "everything that makes up existence contains the information of itself in all its parts". Here, the visionary Walter Maioli (Aktuala, Futuro Antico, Synaulia) collaborates with the music therapist and eclectic composer Agostino Nirodh Fortini, for more than thirty years specialist in the field of sound and video applied to body therapies and meditation. By exposing the archetype breath of the stem, slowing its speed and manipulating and filtering it electronically, the two explorers create a bath of harmonic games with purifying and regenerating powers; a deep and nebulous drone inhabited by insects, alien sounds similar to the vibrates of Fender Rhodes or tonal interludes with plays of stones in water, on the surface of an inner lake, learning to observe and dive into love and awareness.

DAVACHI & ARIEL KALMA, SARAH Intemporel LP
On Intemporel, Sarah Davachi and Ariel Kalma blend their strong individual personalities in a single trip on the edge of time. Their kosmiche music is pure, magnificent, and elegant, an intergalactic hypnosis that seems to tell of distant times, a millenary vortex of a lost era. In the first phase of departure, the mysterious song of the sax winds in archaic echoes, supported by the electronic inlays of the Arp Odyssey synth. Flowing between space rumbles and astral progressions, one sights high celestial bodies. When the infinite drones of the tampura start, one takes part in the night ceremonial, surrounded by deep harmonium and the Tibetan bell chimes. This music releases a sort of mythological warmth, secret codes of a lost purity, which lets one dwell in the labyrinths of a pyramid or in the sacred space of a cosmic pagoda.

GALES, FRED Het Jakoba Prieel 2LP
Double LP version. Black Sweat Records presents a reissue of Fred Gales's Het Jakoba Prieel, originally released on tape by Sound Reporters in 1986. Het Jacoba Prieel is a very weird compendium of imaginary soundscapes, in which every coordinate seems lost and totally deviated. Gales, in collaboration with Walter Maioli and Pit Piccinelli, presents his idea of a concrete organic music, a diary of signals and sound impressions inspired by the great tradition of primitive music, an extreme investigation of love on the primordial beauty of sound expression. Travelling into the properties of all matter of the sonic environment, the members of the legendary Sound Reporters generate, transform, mix, filter, and modulate natural and electronic sounds in the magical analog studio of the Utrecht Institute of Sonology. From a single movement of sound fragments are opened catalyst flows and circuits, flickering sequencers and oscillations of luminous channels; futuristic tribalism, hypnotic fossil percussion, alien sounds, dreamlike trips in the jungle, echoes of rustling and rumbles otherworldly, rain waterfalls and shells in the pond, calls of animals and insects, heart beats, and radar waves. Everything is just pure sound and surrounds the listener.

VA Ethnoelectronics 2LP
Double LP version. Black Sweat Records presents a reissue of Ethnoelectronics, originally released on tape by Sound Reporters in 1986. Ethnoelectronics is a further episode of pioneering fusion between ethnic and electronic music, involving dauntless explorers such as Walter Maioli, Nirodh Fortini, Fred Gales, Raffaele Serra, John Zandijk, and the visionary sculptor Edward Luyken. As the soundtrack of an obscure science-fiction saga, the six parts of these recordings retain something profoundly osmotic and sidereal. In these hybridizations, it's the heart of personal spiritual cosmos and stratospheric portals pulsing, but always retaining their devotion to wild nature and ethnographic differences. In this way, the sinusoidal movements of electronic synthesizers and radiophonic frequencies interact with the pounding sounds of the jungle, with frogs, sea waves, buzz insects, leaves, and rain. From flutes, rattles, steel sound sculptures, or rustling idiophones, mysterious samples appear like weird interferences, with rhythms and ritual voices from Tibet, West Papua, Burundi, Tahiti or the shamanic Japan of the Ainu.

LE VILLEJUIF UNDERGROUND When Will The Flies In Deauville Drop? CD
A bass player looking like the main character of a surf movie shot in Chernobyl. A guitar player who'll take French rap or Thaï music over the Stooges, anytime. A keyboard player invited at rehearsal by mistake who got the job because he fell asleep on his synth. An Australian poet-singer lost in France with no papers, sleeping in a cabin in the backyard of the Villejuif house where the whole band lives, sets up shows and records the most vital, exciting and enthralling records heard in France for a long, long time. PRs and managers would kill for such a story -- this one is 100% accurate and happened just like any great story: by chance. Just like the music of Le Villejuif Underground, the result of happy accidents and unholy alliances, something that was never meant to be but became an astonishing fandango of sorts. Think Fat White Family covering Oingo Boingo with Beat Happening's gear. Think Beck's One Foot In The Grave (1994) remixed by Daniel Johnston and Brian Wilson. Think Ausmuteants, the Spits, the Feeling Of Love, or A Frames when they really nailed it. Actually, you shouldn't think about any of this cause whatever you do, you'll still be far from reality. Way too far. Especially now with the release of When Will The Flies In Deauville Drop?, their second album and the first one on Born Bad Records. 11 tracks in a bit less than 40 minutes. 11 clumsy love letters to heavy backpacks, haunted castles, sleepy Parisian districts, and tours in China -- which happened by total chance, thanks to some girl found asleep on their couch on New Year's Eve. 11 reasons to think there's a way out of 2019 -- already. Your stormy love story with Le Villejuif Underground starts here. Be sure to enjoy it. To the max. CD version comes as a digipack.

MAZOUNI Un Dandy En Exil - Algerie/France - 1969/1983 CD
Mohamed Mazouni, born January 4, 1940 in Blida (The City of Roses), a city which had just turned twenty. His memory dragged around a lot of catchy refrains by Rabah Driassa and Abderrahmane Aziz, also natives of Blida, or by 'asri (modern music) masters Bentir or Lamari. He began his singing career in those years, chosing bedoui as a style. In June 1965, Algeria adopted a Soviet-style profile where everything was planned, even music. Mazouni, he followed his path, recording a few popular tunes, but he also was in the mood for traveling beyond the Mediterranean. During the 1950s and 1960s, Mohamed was dumbfounded by Oum Kalsoum's songs and scopitones. Fully immersed, he soaked up the songs of Dahmane El Harrachi, Slimane Azem, Akli Yahiaten, or Cheikh El Hasnaoui, but also those from the crazy years of twist and rock n' roll as embodied by Johnny Hallyday, Les Chaussettes Noires, or Les Chats Sauvages, not to mention Elvis Presley. Between 1970 and 1990, he had a series of hits. Mazouni, a dandy shattered by his century and always all spruced up who barely performed on stage, had greatly benefited from the impact of scopitones, the ancestors of music videos. His strength lay in Arabic lyrics all his compatriots could understand, and catchy melodies accompanied by violin, goblet drum, qanun, tar (a small tambourine with jingles), lute, and sometimes electric guitar on yé-yé compositions. Like a politician, Mazouni drew on all themes knowing that he would nail it each time. This earned him the nickname "Polaroid singer". Mohamed Mazouni crossed the 1960s and 1970s with his dark humor and unifying mix of local styles. Besides his trivial topics, he also denounced racism and the appalling condition of immigrant workers. However, his way of telling of high school girls, cars and pleasure places earned him the favors of France's young migrant zazous. At the end of the 1990s, the distribution of Michèle Collery and Anaïs Prosaïc's documentary on Arabic and Berber scopitones highlighted Mazouni's importance. Mazouni did not stop singing and even had a few local hits, always driven by a "wide targeting" ambition. This compilation, the first one dedicated to him, includes all of his never-reissued "hits" with, as a bonus, unobtainable songs such as "L'amour Maâk", "Bleu Délavé", or "Daag Dagui". CD version comes in digipack; Includes 24-page booklet.

WILD CLASSICAL MUSIC ENSEMBLE, THE Tout Va Bien Se Passer (Everything Will Be Alright) CD
In current times, how should mental disability be dealt with in an unrestrained, open-minded way? How can society take on this difference not as a barrier but as an opportunity? By directly confronting its creative force and abounding energy. And what better place for this than on a stage, where disability ceases to be a "negative" and becomes a "positive", finally revealing exceptionally strong human beings, without any blinders or artifices. From experimental group Les Harry's, to hip-hop collective Choolers Division, to the multifaceted projects of Atelier Méditerranée (now Brut Pop), many are the initiatives that have explored this channel in recent years. The Wild Classical Music Ensemble is: Linh Pahm, Johan Geenens, Wim Decoene, and Sebastien Faidherbe, four mentally disabled persons, led by the Belgian musician and violin-maker Damien Magnette. The group's first album, released in confidentiality on Sub Rosa (SR 274CD, 2009), had gone under the radar and no one seemed to know how to approach it. Yet, no less than six labels (including Born Bad Records) grappled to put out Tapping Is Clapping in 2015 (BORNBAD 071LP), a new LP full of fire and fury, a record of an "other" category. And if in 2019 you still haven't dared to let yourself be hammered by the Wild Classical Musical Ensemble's steamroller, rest assured: the time to catch-up his here with Tout Va Bien Se Passer (Everything Will Be Alright), the ensemble's third record together and from far its most accessible yet. But careful, this isn't a sort of lull, far from it -- as evidenced by the exceptional "Bande De", a furious symphony of curses on which Fabrice, the singer of Frustration, stirs up an already stifling atmosphere. It's rather a convergence, a rebalancing of flows, and more accessible material. Making your trip to this parallel dimension more colorful and hallucinated. Orchestrated by Magnette's original instruments (percussion bass, melodica from outer space, devious microphones, effect pedals transformed into a Theremin), specifically designed for each member of the group. A trip full of dizzying earthquakes and triumphant storms, populated by jelly-like Talking Heads ("Trainstation") and damaged Devos ("Autofile"), where you will dance to lunar punk ("Carapace"), and screaming robot-rock ("Ik Ben Blij"). CD version comes as a digipack.

"Overground" immediately launches into outer space and towards rave ecstasy on a 140+ bpm backbeat. "I Need You" opens the flip in typical hard-hitting Regal style but throws two elements in the ring that give this track an unusual spin. ALLIEN, ELLEN Alientronic 2LP
Double LP version. From beyond our universe, the Alientronic invasion arrives on Planet Earth. One of the great ambassadors of Berlin techno, Ellen Allien presents her brand new album Alientronic. This is a body of work rooted in the city where it was recorded, Ellen's home and the place where she discovered techno sparking a love affair which will burn for infinity. Alientronic was recorded during the cold winter months in Berlin at the end of 2018, a time when creativity hits a peak in the city. Sub-zero temperatures and dark nights keep the artists locked away indoors, finding time and space to journey inwards and tap into the deepest recesses of their creative energy. Alientronic represents an artist who is brimming with ideas, years of experience breathe life into Ellen's work -- it's refined, yet liberated, informed by the past but very much looking to the future. Ellen disseminates classic techno and acid tropes through her visionary lens, vocals are looped and warped, tough beats slam down as stirring pads coax you into an emotive realm and you're privy to a spellbinding other world full of mysterious exotic allure. Is it a hallucination or are the electro-terrestrials already here among us?

O SAALA SAKRAAL Etmaal CD
"A new collective led by former Hadewych member Peter Johan Nÿland, also a recent member of Trepaneringsritualen. Etmaal ('natural day') is the first in a series of explorations that aim to serve as a channel between the ethereal and chthonic, sacred and profane, the innermost black well and the outermost white sun. The album follows the circadian path as an analogue to the revelation of the actual self, with the sun as the inverted eye that unveils all things in their temporality, opposite the eternal inner black of night. Sudden transitions between coercive percussive hammering and sharp boreal drone pieces seek to mirror cosmic events; from glacial movements to throbbing punctuation and sudden death and with each end resolved arises a new tension and an attempt at cleansing and delving deeper with the intent of finally arriving at the inner clearing. In the recording process for Etmaal, the group effectively alternated between states of extreme focus and hiati in which subconscious impulses were allowed to arise and the result is an album that skillfully wanders an essential pathway between two planes in its own distinctive way. On this album, O Saala Sakraal is a five-piece outfit that consists of four percussionists; Scramasax (Volksweerbaarheid/Hadewych/Distel), Rene Aquarius (Dead Neanderthals, Fantoom, Krishna), Patricia Manko (Hadewych), Donné Brok (Donné Et Desirée) and Peter Johan Nÿland (Distel, Hadewych), the latter who plays tapes and piano-string percussion instrument 'draak', next to regular percussion. The group first came together for a series shows as Hadewych with an extended percussion section, but it soon became clear that its pieces - partly composed, partly improvised - claimed a realm of their own and drifted away from the overall sound of Hadewych, into something more monolithic, mystical and opaque."

O'MALLEY, STEPHEN Gruidés LP
Restocked, last copies. The dark interpreter Stephen O'Malley ov Sunn O))) presents his towering orchestral composition Gruidés, commissioned by French 35-piece improv orchestra ONCEIM -- l'Orchestre de Nouvelles Créations, Expérimentations et Improvisation Musicales -- and released thru Demdike Stare's DDS label. In early 2014 O'Malley was approached by pianist and composer Frédéric Blondy to write a work for the orchestra, which is made up of exceptional musicians from the fields of contemporary, jazz, experimental, improvisation, and classical. Understandably intimidated by the prospect, but encouraged to "just be punk rock about it," the preternaturally gifted composer has conceived a technically demanding -- for the players, at least -- and richly rewarding long-form drone piece intently focused on harmonic experimentation and overtone study. During its 35-minute lifespan, Gruidés requires the musicians to sustain pitches for several minutes (which is difficult enough for strings, and a real feat of endurance for woodwind), yielding spectra of eliding dissonance rent in sliding tone clusters and lucent geometries punctuated by a similar whipcrack percussion to that used in Sunn O)))'s 2014 collaboration with Scott Walker. It makes great use of the acoustic qualities of Saint Merry church in central Paris, as captured in the recording of IRCAM's Augustin Muller and mastered by Matt Colton with a detached spaciousness evocatively distilled in Jean-Luc Verna's cover art. It's an incredibly immersive piece that comes highly recommended if you're into the work of Phill Niblock, Alvin Lucier, Ellen Fullman, Harley Gaber, and, indeed, Sunn O))).

With the demise of Wire in 1980, founding members Bruce Gilbert and Graham Lewis joined forces to create Dome. With the assistance of engineer Eric Radcliffe and his Blackwing Studio, Dome took the ethic of "using the studio as a compositional tool" and recorded and released three albums on their own label in the space of 12 months: Dome (DOME 001LP, 2019), Dome 2 (1980), and Dome 3 (1981). A final fourth album, Will You Speak This Word: Dome IV was released on the Norwegian Uniton label in 1982. These albums represent some of the most beautifully stark and above all, timeless exercises in studio experimentation from early the 1980s alternative music scene. Previously issued in the out of print DOME 1-4+5 box set in 2011, Dome 2 is now available as standalone LP, with new artwork by Dave Coppenhall. AZYMUTH Demos (1973-75) Vol. 1 LP
LP version, Volume 1. 180 gram vinyl; includes download code. Since their debut in 1975 (FARO 117X-LP), Azymuth have risen to rank alongside the world's greatest jazz, funk and fusion artists. As young men in Rio de Janeiro, they stood out for both their exceptional talent as musicians, and their wild rock 'n' roll antics in the predominantly middle-class worlds of bossa nova and jazz. Their signature "Samba Doido" (crazy samba) sound ruptured the tried and tested musical structures of the day, resulting in what can only be described as an electric, psychedelic, samba jazz-funk hybrid. Before they became Azymuth, José Roberto Bertrami (keyboards), Ivan 'Mamão' Conti (drums), Alex Malheiros (bass) and Ariovaldo Contesini (percussion) played backing band to just about every major artist in Brazil. Azymuth's name can be found on record sleeves by the likes of Jorge Ben, Elis Regina, Marcos Valle, Ana Mazzotti, and countless others. But at the dawn of the seventies, fascinated by developments in improvisational music -- from jazz in the US, to progressive rock in the UK and of course samba, bossa and tropicália on home turf - the energetic young group were inspired and ready to move forward; these previously unheard recordings took place between 1973-75 at Bertrami's home studio. At the time of recording, there was nothing in Brazil, less the world, that sounded anything like them, so it's unsurprising that when Bertrami presented his demos to the record companies he had been working for, he was turned away, told in effect that the music was 'wrong'. When English producers Joe Davis and Roc Hunter arrived in Brazil in 1994 to record the first Azymuth album in over a decade, Bertrami dug out the demos which had sat virtually untouched for over twenty years. Beginning a long and fruitful relationship, "Prefacio" would be the first track Azymuth recorded for Far Out Recordings and was released on the Carnival album (1996). Only a handful of these demos were ever professionally recorded and released, making this the first opportunity to hear many of these early Azymuth compositions in their raw, original form. On every track the frenetic energy in the studio is palpable, giving the recordings a beautifully personal feel and a sense of the phenomenally creative vision Bertrami, Malheiros, and Conti were realizing at the time. Fifty years on, Azymuth's earliest recorded music retains an ineffable, futuristic quality, standing amongst their most captivating and moving work.

FRANK HURRICANE AND HURRICANES OF LOVE Life is Spiritual LP
"It's fair to say that what the world needs now is love. And not just a drop here or there. Enter the Hurricane. This latest offering is a high point in a career that is all about being high and impossible to put a point on. Life is Spiritual -- it's an evocation, a flowering of a singular vision. There is nothing static in Hurricane's world, even if he is drawing on more recognizable forms than in the past. He's mastered the elusive art of being in the moment. His car is a character, the road is his friend, but what stands out the most is the string of places. The places don't so much define the people in them as they act on their inhabitants spiritually. Like ghosts. Out of the gate, yeti powder, pills, and spiritual rivers lead him to the corrupt town of Sneedville, TN. We meet Cricket O.G., who warns of weed laced with PCP, and even though a boy falls into a gasoline fire, the Sneedville blues can't get our Frank down. 'Susquehanna River Blues' spins a yarn about hitting a Burger King with a group of Juggalos and wrings bright beams of profundity out of the experience with the simplest language imaginable. 'Gatlinburg Blues' augments its colorful tale with eerie strings sawing away in the background, summoning ineffable drama and on 'Holy Mountaintop Rainstorm,' Frank sings against a phalanx of horns. 'Johnson City Blues,' with its fascist bovine building a pipeline, is a tale of a haunted devil town, sinners in the hand of an angry god, and the terror of early America that's never left us. The only peace is to be found in breezes and natural beauty. Frank wails like a banshee. The title track finds Frank reflecting, distilling not just the album but his worldview into a head-nodding jaunt. 'Life is spiritual' becomes an incantation, which Frank and Rene Bailey belt out like a call to the cosmos. 'Beneath Tha BP Lights' is an ethereal tale of a game of pool, and 'Mooneye Travelin Blues' is a lament of the highest order. 'Lonely Love' is just what it sounds like, Hurricane style. The road, for all of its adventure, is also a lonely place. 'Chattahoochee Flow' takes us out of this LP, but we know Frank's still rolling on..." --Matt Krefting, Holyoke, MA 2019 Cover art by Turner Williams. Includes a download card.

MOKADELIC Gomorrah (Expanded Edition) CD
Hereby the expanded edition of the sought-after Italian soundtrack for Gomorrah, comprised of eight bonus tracks -- just released for Season 4 -- and composed by roman cult band Mokadelic. The original soundtrack of Gomorrah, the acclaimed Italian television crime drama inspired by Roberto Saviano's 2008 best-selling book Gomorrah. Gomorrah received unprecedented critical acclaim all over the world. The Guardian (UK) called it "The unmissable, ultimate mafia show" and German magazine Spiegel-Online says, "Forget the Sopranos, here they are the Savastanos!" The music from both seasons of Gomorrah is composed and performed by Mokadelic, a Rome based psychedelic-post-rock collective, specializing in music for film. The music of Mokadelic is influenced by the contemporary sounds of such names as Mogwai, Explosions in the Sky, and Godspeed You Black Emperor, without forgetting the lessons from the great Italian soundtrack composers of the sixties and seventies. The soundtrack has an eclectic sound palette that alternates from spacious, melancholic atmospheres to extremely dense climaxes. It's an emotionally intense musical narrative, deeply inspired by Gomorrah's haunting realism. Features Lucariello.

ASOMVEL World Shaker CD
These guys calmly walk on, bludgeon your senses with a baseball bat and then retire to the bar, leaving you with what's left of your mind in a pool in your pants. ASOMVEL released their well-respected debut LP, Kamikaze, in 2009. Barely a year later, the band was shaken to its core when front-man, Jay-Jay Winter, was killed in a road accident. Although a devastating tragedy, co-founding guitarist, Lenny, knew that the band had to continue in tribute to the determined spirit of their founder. World Shaker is dedicated to Jay-Jay Winter. Carrying with it Jay's attitude, grit, and determination this album is the first to feature the new line-up; Finnish drummer, Jani Pasanen, and Jay-Jay's nephew Ralph Robinson on bass/vocals. Sticking to the traditions of the very best in rock n' roll, while remaining utterly relevant, World Shaker is eleven heavy metal songs to live your life by; this is the album Moses would have brought down from Mount Sinai.

TRAPPES, PENELOPE Penelope Redeux LP
After the release of her sublime sophomore solo album Penelope Two (HTH 105CD/LP, 2018), Penelope Trappes and Houndstooth announce Penelope Redeux, an album of top-drawer reworks of tracks from Penelope Two which showcase the intrinsic brilliance of Penelope's composition and performances and her far-reaching and all-encompassing musical influences and significance. On Penelope Redeux, Penelope Two's themes of life and death and of hope and dismay are still prevalent, brought to the surface in a myriad of ways. Mogwai stretch "Burn On" into a scorching, warbling drone that flips the original somber subtlety for grandeur and in-your-face majesty. Factory Floor member Nik Colk Void offers up a wayward, statically charged reworking of "Nite Hive" which reimagines the track's solemn beauty as a heads-down roller. Throbbing Gristle's Cosey Fanni Tutti's dystopian, avant-garde and jazz tinged electronics are deployed alongside her signature cornet to flip "Carry Me." Félicia Atkinson's rework of "Burn On" digs for the skeletal awe by stripping away many of Penelope's multi-layered effects and pushing the bare vocals to the front with manipulated field recordings. Houndstooth mainstay Throwing Snow demonstrates his ineffable brilliance, delivering an elastic-yet-powerful subdued rework of "Farewell". Jófríður Ákadóttir aka JFDR injects nimble rhythms and guitar into piano ballad "Maeve." Hidden Orchestra member Poppy Ackroyd transposes "Kismet" onto the piano, adding eerie percussive embellishments. Savages producer Jonny Hostile takes "Farewell" and utilizes the space within to add more noise and energy. Sigur Ros' musical director Paul Corley, delivers a forlorn take on "Nite Hive," whilst Swedish techno duo Aasthma (Peder Mannerfelt and Pär Grindvik) "Connector" to an entirely different realm, adding rattling drum patterns and skidding synth leads which transform the sober original to a joyous dancefloor slayer. Trappes is a London-based, Australian-born vocalist; she spent 2016 writing and recording what would become her first solo album Penelope One (OMLP 011LP, 2017) in a piano studio in East London. Composed of mostly percussion-less, reverb-heavy atmospherics with dystopian themes, the LP was released via Optimo Music. Penelope signed to Houndstooth in 2018 and released Penelope Two; the minimalist, ethereal album was built around field recordings, meditations, guitars, synth drones, piano and reverb, and deals with mortality, predestination and empathy.

O'ROURKE & CM VON HAUSSWOLFF, JIM In, Demons, In! LP
The time-stopping tract of In Demons In! is a naturally elemental drone collaboration between eminent experimentalists Jim O'Rourke and CM Von Hausswolf for their eternal admirers at iDEAL Recordings. Offering a transfixing peek behind the curtain of pure black hole drone dynamics, In Demons In! finds the American in Japanese exile and the proclaimed monarch of the imaginary kingdoms of Elgaland-Vargaland meeting on common ground after 26 years of international correspondence. Initiated in Tokyo 2016 and completed over the following two years in Japan and Sweden, the uncompromisingly adventurous results are galactic in scope and viscerally metaphysical in presence, conjuring scales of abyssal bass and diffused, atomized, abstract dark matter that make the listener feel like a speck of stardust floating in infinity. Using sound as a magickal tool for psychic transport and to finely model notions of the metaphysical that typically elude human comprehension, the near 40-minute work feels to collapse billions of years into a glacial moment. Location recordings made in Kathmandu lend a barely-there iridescence, like microbial filaments flickering in the endless darkness, to their plunging, subharmonic basses and vaporized mid-upper registers, where spectral forces comb thru the piece, only very gradually altering the weightless keen of its planetary mass and mental traction. Ultimately, and fans are likely to agree, In Demons In! amounts to a vitally definitive entry in both artists' catalogs, marking right up there with the most abstract wonders of O'Rourke's electro-acoustic Steamroom volumes, while manifesting some of the most fascinating results from Von Hausswolff's ongoing investigations into drone music's paranormal properties. In other words: it's Grade A+ zoner music. Master and cut by Dubplates & Mastering, Germany. Pressed on neon yellow vinyl. RIYL: Roland Kayn, Jaap Vink, Deathprod. Edition of 500.

COKER, JULIE A Life In The Limelight: Lagos Disco & Itsekiri Highlife, 1976-1981 CD
Kalita Records release the first ever compilation focusing on the musical career of Julie Coker, the queen of Nigerian television. Here the label collates seven of Julie's most sought-after Afro disco and hauntingly-beautiful Itsekiri highlife recordings, accompanied by extensive interview-based liner notes and never-before seen photos. After gaining fame as Miss Western Nigeria 1957, Julie began her career in the Nigerian entertainment industry as the country's first ever (and Africa's second) female television presenter, as well as a popular national radio host. In 1976, having been surrounded by close musical friends, including Fela Kuti and Kris Okotie, Julie entered the Nigerian music scene with the now-invisible psychedelic highlife album Ere Yon (Sweet Songs) (1976), followed in 1981 by the highly sought-after disco-centric Tomorrow to great acclaim. Both now fetch eye-watering prices on the rare occasion that they become available for sale. Kalita Records select four recordings from Ere Yon (Sweet Songs) and three from Tomorrow, all as contemporary-sounding today as they were when first released forty years ago. These include Julie's "Ere Yon", which was recently re-interpreted by Anderson .Paak on Oxnard released on Dr. Dre's Aftermath imprint in 2018, and the lost Afro disco classic "Gossiper Scandal Monger". In partnership with Julie, Kalita Records believe the time is right to share Julie's phenomenal story and music with the world once more. CD version comes in a digipack; includes booklet.

WHITEFIELD, JJ Brother All Alone LP
German guitarist, bandleader, and producer JJ Whitefield has been spearheading several musical sub-genres over the last two decades. His bands Poets of Rhythm, Whitefield Brothers, and Karl Hector & The Malcouns are almost legendary to fans worldwide. German label Kryptox has been created to show what's happening in the growing German neo-jazz underground. Brother All Alone is Whitefield's first album under his own name. Recorded in Berlin, Munich, and Nairobi with some of the most interesting heads of the German neo-jazz-kraut scene and mixed by Malcolm Catto of The Heliocentrics. In the 1990s, he paved the way for the retro funk revival as mastermind of the Poets Of Rhythm. Poets Of Rhythm's records later served as main influence for the Daptone crew, the New York band that backed Amy Winehouse on her breakthrough album Back In Black (2006). Whitefield later started to widen his interests in West African and Ethiopian music. This passion culminated of him being an integral part in re-launching the career of Ghanaian Afro funk legend Ebo Taylor and to work with Jagari Chanda of Zambian rock legends the W.I.T.C.H. since 2010. Now, back in Germany, JJ Whitefield culminates all these experiences on his album Brother All Alone, a melting pot of styles and influences, drawing from kraut, jazz, ambient, and world music heritages. His band consists of some of the most interesting talents of the new german jazz and kraut scene: Johannes Schleiermacher, Bernd Oezsevim, and Maasl Maier (Karaba, Embryo), with guest appearances from Sam Davids, Charif Megarbane, and Marja Burchard. The album starts with two quite calm songs: "Seven Seas" in 7/8 rhythm and "14/08". Then "Zone 30" takes over: an improvisation with a very slow tempo that opens of for "White Queen", a tribute song for Whitefield's daughter Lilly. Whitefield has a great interest in exotic library records: "Chilli Chicken" can be seen as a tribute to this scene. This track gets followed by two other tribute compositions: "Metrosex", a tribute to German Jazz legend Gunter Hampel and "Rubikon", an homage to one of the funkiest bands ever with a jazzy prog filter. Also "Yellow Sari" could remind certain vibes from more trippy exotic library sounds. The follow-up song "Dreckstück" then creates a slightly different atmosphere. The album closes with the beautiful "Nirguna", an ambient Indian drone experiment. 180 gram vinyl; Includes printed inner sleeve.

Five first-class brass players have joined together to form a quintet called Ensemble Schwerpunkt. Their brilliant debut CD contains Luciano Berio's "Call" and Sofia Gubaidulina's "Quattro", standard works from the brass repertoire, but the focus is on compositions written specifically for the ensemble. After all, these five musicians are dedicated to promoting a broad, demanding repertoire for their instrumentation. This means taking risks and pushing the boundaries of what's technically possible: Benedict Mason's "Brass Quintet" lay in a drawer for 25 years until any quintet dared to undertake it. Ensemble Schwerpunkt's first performance and the world premiere recording here capture their fiery interpretation of this work. SUGIYAMA, YOICHI Kinderszenen CD
The album Kinderszenen with music by Yoichi Sugiyama is a portrait CD in the best sense. It not only shows various facets of the composer, but the works also have strong biographical connections. Like many Asian composers of his generation, Sugiyama combines Eastern and Western influences in his music. At times this is readily apparent, as in the work Kuguhi for 17-string bass koto (a Japanese zither), or quite subtle, as when he used Schumann's Kinderszenen as the initial material for a complex and richly differentiated viola quartet. After growing familiar with the Japanese new music scene -- and also influencing it himself, it was Sugiyama's fascination with contemporary Italian composers that led him to travel to Europe. Today he is internationally established as a composer and a conductor. Performers include: Kazue Sawai - 17-string bass koto; Wonjung Kim - voice Richard Stoltzman - clarinet; Ah Ling Neu - viola; Stephen Gosling - piano; Tokyo Gen'On Project; The Imai Viola Quartet.

EDWARDS, PETER IVAN Ionobia CD
Peter Ivan Edwards was born in New York, studied in the USA and Germany, and is now a professor of composition in Singapore. Extramusical influences can often be found in his work, such as computer-supported processes, algorithmic processes, or a linguistic model as in ionobia. Edwards also teaches computer music, though the computer itself is only used once on this CD: in "Ssoonro" for bassoon and electronics. Otherwise, this CD focuses on a variety of instrumentations. The number and quality of the interpreters is evidence of both the fact that Edward's music is performed internationally and of the surprisingly diverse and colorful new music scene in Singapore. Performers include: Trio SurPlus; Ensemble Interface; Ensemble Wu Xian; Yong Siew Toh Conservatory Orchestra; Jason Lai - conductor; Matteo Cesari - flute; Pieter Jansen - violin; Christoph Wichert - bassoon.

MAHNKOPF, CLAUS-STEFFEN Vocal Music CD
Music for voice(s) is one of the richest and perhaps unexplored areas in contemporary music. Claus-Steffen Mahnkopf wrestled for many years with himself and dedicated serious thought to fundamental issues before composing vocal music. Today, he has written a number of compositions with quite different approaches: While he was radically committed to incomprehensible texts in the 1990s, he later did just the opposite. The breadth of vocal forces is also enormous; on this CD they range from solo baritone in "Es? apie vandenis" to a work for a 24-voice ensemble, "voiced void". Again and again, Mahnkopf deals with the topic of the void: "void -- un diletto italiano" for six voices is an epitaph for Pier Paolo Pasolini. Performers include: ExVoCo; SWR Vokalensemble Stuttgart; Rupert Huber - conductor; Neue Voklasolisten; Jeffrey Gavett - baritone.

FRIEDMAN, BURNT Musical Traditions in Central Europe: Explorer Series Vol. 4 CD
Burnt Friedman with Explorer Series Vol. 4, original ethnic music of the peoples of the world/full spectrum stereo dominance. With such a complicated amalgam of races, religions, and language as there is in central Europe, it is not surprising, that the musical life is endless in variety. Before the upheavals engendered by immigration policies, the introduction of 5 G technology, and the gaining of maximum self-expression, the separation of cultures must have been even more noticeable, yet now in the sphere of music one can see them drawing more closely together. This is especially true of an under-populated melting pot such as Berlin, where the sense of beauty is innate and one hardly meets a white male or a woman not being a painter or a dancer, or a musician. The system of scales, and also the fact that the western central Europeans rely on recorded or written script in order to conserve the themes of their music, could lead us to look upon it as a form of art music. Remarkably enough, traditional house or techno which existed 30 years ago, still flourishes today. Moreover, all the time new forms and musical styles are being discovered, tried out and eventually overlooked. The present record can offer but a modest sampling of extinct splendors, political or individual sufferings, gloomy sadness, love, resentment, exquisite delicacy, laughter and delectable wisdom of rural and urban central European music. Burnt Friedman's essential function is to perform music that ensures the repose of the dead and render their ghosts harmless; in the case of whole communities, to dispel evil spirits and restore to Berlin its pristine purity; and in the case of individuals, to expel the demands of possession. Despite the limited scope of sound carriers, these ten highlights of central European culture contain an emotional force and documentary value of inestimable importance. Although it would be incorrect to consider the various selections contained herein as authentic ethnological documents insofar as the performances were for the most part "mystified", on the other hand one can certainly consider them significant examples of the attempts of white males to develop their own modes of expression and communication. Chat Noir would like to thank the National Music Council For Comparative Studies And Documentation in Berlin, who contributed a large part of the financial assistance. Features Lucas Santtana and Hayden Chisholm. Photographs taken by the author for Musikethnologische Abteilung Des Museums Für Völkerkunde. Mastering by Rashad Becker, February 2019.

The master of dark simplicity: beat, bass, drift, drone -- Mick Harris has re-engaged with his longest running, primary artist identity, Scorn. His first salvo upon return, the Feather EP is anything but light. It is the darkest possible bass weight, a vortex of low frequency into which all light is subsumed. The three entirely separate versions of the title track plumb unknown depths with harried atmospheres, reminiscent of Scorn's earlier days, a time before bass music became a popular movement and Harris was the absolute pioneer in the genre.

WRUHME, ROBAG Venq Tolep CD
Robag Wruhme takes synthetic sounds and sampled noises, cuts them to fit, and turns them into beats without his music ever sounding pieced-together; every single percussive sound is a compact unit, bursting with melody. For Venq Tolep, his first album-length release on Pampa Records in eight years, Wruhme chooses to dig deeper, expanding the space of these elements. He finds beats inside the beats, opens them up further, discovers hooklines, harmonies and feels where he can dispense with rhythm entirely. From his first releases on Freude am Tanzen one could hear it, a light-footed sense of rhythm. Venq Tolep opens with two melodic, melancholic pieces: "Advent" sets one to dancing, while "Westfal" has the listener lying in the grass amid the buzzing heat and rustling wind, hearing the voice of Lysann Zander, with whom Wruhme has worked previously on projects including his album Thora Vukk (PAMPA 002CD, 2011). Hers is not the only familiar name on this album -- Sidsel Endresen and Bugge Wesseltoft have both appeared on releases from Wruhme's bootleg label. Here, they are featured on "Nata Alma," a laid-back club track. "Iklahx" and "Ak-Do 5" both possess a carefree percussiveness, while "Komalh" and "Ago Lades" prove that when Wruhme talks about techno, he means club music more akin to the elegance of London two-step, fueled by R&B/hip-hop and swingbeat, and far removed from the Belgian-Teutonic bunker sound. "Bézique Atout" is a reinterpretation of "Domino," a track from French producer Oxia which Wruhme remixed in 2017, stylishly making it his own. Two more familiar tracks are "Volta Copy," a version of his 2015 hit "Volta Cobby," minus the beat, but now propelled by arpeggios, and "Ende #2," like greetings received from around the world in a day, picks up where "Ende" from Thora Vukk leaves off. Title track "Venq Tolep" draws on all the album's various movements in four minutes and 18 seconds: the light, pensive mood, the subtle, driving rhythm, the ambient-sounding layers of synthesized strings and the percussive electric piano melody lines. Venq Tolep has a well-rounded sound, like an arch unfolding in space; that, of course, is the universe of Robag Wruhme. With Venq Tolep, Wruhme creates something extraordinary -- the album may speak the language of club music, but the music verges on feeling like songs. Is it techno pop? Pop techno? Pop ambient? Ambient pop? Digipak.

LIFTED 2 LP
PAN welcomes back the Lifted ensemble for a second cross-continental adventure off the grid, simply titled 2. Lifted's latest release expands on the expression of improvised fusion that brought about the spectrum of styles explored on their 2015 debut album for PAN (PAN 061LP). Expansion is a key theme to 2, primarily in the musicians involved; Lifted is now a core group of Future Times boss Max D, Matt Papich aka Co La, Jeremy Hyman, and Motion Graphics. Expansion also relates to musical ideas Lifted explore and the studio techniques executed. Whereas the way they approached the idea of improvisation on 1 was framed in jazz terms, the seven-tracks on this second LP step even further into the vivid unknown. Zero boundaries for the exploratory impulse. As with the debut Lifted LP, listening to 2 is an open invitation to experience the worldwide creative framework surrounding these artists. The collaborators for each track, whether present in the studio or online, show what a fluid and freeform exercise Lifted can be. Max D's international crew of Future Timers play deft roles throughout 2. Jordan GCZ and Dawit Eklund both return alongside 1432 r's Sami, NYC's Will DiMaggio, and Sao Paulo's Repetentes 2008. UK underground artists Beatrice Dillon and Bass Clef make telling contributions which mark the latest in a long line of celebrated creative collaborations for the pair. Further input comes via Aya, vocalist and bassist for Japanese experimentalists OOIOO, and Martin Kasey, a friend of Papich with a background in Baltimore theater, summoned to provide some striking saxophone blasts. It all manifests in a sort of inverse process full of blind takes with the results more bruised than polished. These seven tracks adroitly weave through mood and vibe, demanding heads lock in with an initial blast of whip sharp percussive hits and contemporary no-wave blowouts before letting off steam with soothing ambient synthesis. "Blackpepper" acts as the album centerpiece to an unhinged mangle of SH101 basslines, freeform flute, and saxophone, and multiple percussive sources. "Rose 31" edges closest to the kind of jazz fusion that inspired the project from the off, Lifted utilizing the various classic instruments deployed by the greats of the game. "Near Future" smartly foregrounds Motion Graphics' stunning piano talents, gradually stripping away all other elements until all that is left are his swirling notes. Photography by Traianos Pakioufakis. Artwork by Johannes Schnatmann and Bill Kouligas. Mastered by Rashad Becker.

RAVIV, AMNON Mirror LP
Paradigm Discs present a reissue of Amnon Raviv's Mirror, originally released in Israel in 1983 and only available in a handmade edition of just 50 copies. As such, this edition is the first widely available issue of this LP, giving it a chance to reach an audience beyond the 50 hardened collectors who got to hear this strange experimental record back in the '80s. There's nothing else quite like it from that era, let alone from Israel, although it does have some parallels with earlier avant-garde/outsider music from the US and Europe. It may well be the strangest, as well as one of the most obscure records to come out of Israel. The instruments used are flamenco and acoustic guitar, flute, violin and sax. Some of the playing is free form and some is complex notation, but all the tracks contain collages of effects and noisy field recordings which often dominate the picture -- bubbling water, a chicken farm, feedback, transistor radio, metal percussion, vacuum cleaner, etc. There are some comparisons to be made with Anal Magic and Rev Dwight Frizzell's Beyond The Black Crack from 1976, also reissued on Paradigm (PD 006CD/LP). Mirror has a similar wild and fried atmosphere sitting amidst the open sonic spaces, coupled with some skilled instrumental playing. A notable difference with the Frizzell album is that Frizell's pieces are always titled -- the six pieces here are all untitled. Amnon Raviv is still active as a musician, but he also holds a PhD in medical clowning and his main work these days is as a medical clown, incorporating smiles and laughter as a therapy to help recovering patients on Tel Aviv's cancer wards. This edition comes with new artwork showing Raviv working as a performance artist on the streets of Amsterdam in 1984. Includes 12x12" insert which replicates the original artwork from one of the 50 unique sleeves and contains liner notes by the artist that give insights into the concept behind this album; edition of 500 (numbered).

The track also features fellow Italian Marika from Underspreche on vocals, who also contributed a discoid remix to the original. "Discoteque" may remind you of the early Marvin & Guy sound: rough, chunky, rocky, and full of disco-ish energy. While "Colours" is a calmer, yet mental trip.

ERICKSON, ROKY All That May Do My Rhyme LP
Restocked; R.i.P. Roky! LP version. Play Loud! Productions present the first reissue of Roky Erickson's All That May Do My Rhyme, originally released in 1994. Roky Erickson is a legend. Former member of the 13th Floor Elevators, he was considered the white James Brown. Drug problems and diagnosed schizophrenia made him an outsider. By the '90s, he was struggling to survive on a $200 monthly social security check. In 1990, artists like R.E.M., ZZ Top, and the Jesus and Mary Chain recorded his songs for a tribute album. Erickson performed publicly for the first time in many years at the Austin Music Awards. In 1994, he returned to the studio with guitarists Charlie Sexton and the Butthole Surfers' Paul Leary to record All That May Do My Rhyme. This record was released on CD, cassette, and vinyl in 1994 on Paul Leary's Trance Syndicate Records. Notes from the original press release: "Trance Syndicate is pleased to present the first studio recording in almost a decade by one of the most gifted, most influential, most inspired singer/songwriters from the Republic of Texas since Buddy Holly. Roky Erickson is back! performing new songs and a few classics in one of the best studios in Texas, backed by some of Texas' finest musicians." This album succeeds the band's 2017 Ritual Severance EP (Invictus Productions), which was the follow-up to their 2012 self-titled demo. The Great Solar Hunter is the result of the band's serpentine-like build up, since inception, to an impenetrably demonic and monolithic sonic vastness. The band's elongated tracks are a key element to this sound -- dark, murky, atmosphere-drenched dissonance and twisted guitar riff mutations flow through tense passages, building and culminating in epic and moving moments of melancholic majesty and triumph. It is these elements that give the band their sense of singularity and noteworthiness within the mire of extreme death/black metal"

"One of the great Blaxploitation film scores of the '70s, finally back on vinyl where it belongs! This 1973 feature introduced one of the great characters in the whole genre, starring the indomitable, six-foot-two Tamara Dobson as Cleopatra Jones, a taller, hipper, and blacker James Bond. In this film, she thwarts a lesbian L.A. drug lord as played by Shelley Winters, all accompanied by the musical efforts of what is pretty much a '70s soul/jazz/funk dream team. On vocals, you had the leading male and female lights of the Spring label, the great Joe Simon (performing the hit title theme) and Millie Jackson. And on the instrumental side, jazz trombone giant J. J. Johnson (in collaboration with the underrated Carl Brandt of Mod Squad score fame). The result: a prime example of the symphonic funk that became the siren song for Blaxploitation soundtracks throughout the '70s. For its first domestic vinyl reissue, we've pressed up just 700 copies in red and blue starburst vinyl, with original artwork intact... oh so tasty!"

ASHBY AND FRANK WESS, DOROTHY In A Minor Groove LP
"Dorothy Ashby was probably the greatest -- and certainly the most swinging -- jazz harpist of all time, re-purposing an instrument best known for ethereal glissandos into a fully versatile voice in combo settings, capable of providing both instrumental embroidery and rhythmic drive. But she was always fighting an uphill battle in terms of garnering critical and commercial success; both her gender and the exoticism of her instrument often prevented her from being taken seriously among the hidebound environs of late '50s and '60s jazz. But it is that very uniqueness of her sound and station in the jazz world that has made her one of the most collectible musicians of her era, as her music has been sampled and celebrated by modern-day hip hop and world music artists (e.g. Jurassic Five, Bonobo) alike. In A Minor Groove is one of two albums she made in 1958 with flautist/saxophonist Frank Wess, and it is a marvel; backed by fellow Detroit native Herman Wright on bass and the great Roy Haynes on drums, she and Wess weave mesmerizing melodic threads through standards like 'Alone Together' and 'Yesterdays'. But perhaps the most amazing track is 'Bohemia After Dark', which displays Ashby's uncanny ability to turn her harp into a rhythm guitar! For this first ever domestic vinyl reissue of In A Minor Groove, we are using the original mono sources -- not the rechanneled stereo and jumbled track listing that showed up on Prestige's later repackaging called Dorothy Ashby Plays for Beautiful People -- and pressing up a limited edition of 1000 in neon green vinyl! TANEGA, NORMA Walkin' My Cat Named Dog LP
"Now, here's a cult classic album long overdue for a vinyl reissue! Norma Tanega was discovered while singing to Catskill summer campers by producer Herb Bernstein, who brought her to Four Seasons songwriter Bob Crewe. Crewe signed her to his New Voice label, and success was instantaneous: the title song to 'Walkin' My Cat Named Dog' went to #22 on the charts. But, despite the album's folk-pop trappings, Norma Tanega was not an artist destined to stay at the top of the charts for long; her voice was unconventional, and her songs were too idiosyncratic, not sticking to typical song structure or even meter (for example, 'No Stranger Am I' is set to a 5/4 time signature). In fact, Tanega's songs were so unusual that she had to hire session musicians to play them on the North American tour she took to support the album instead of her erstwhile back-up band The Outsiders! Upon returning, she then embarked on a British tour that was to change her life forever; there she met Dusty Springfield, and the two embarked on an artistic and romantic relationship that prompted Tanega to move to London for five years. After the pair broke up, Tanega wound up moving to California and shifted to playing percussion in more experimental settings, following the wayward muse that makes Walkin' My Cat Named Dog such an entrancing and unique listening experience. Real Gone Music is proud to reissue this album just like it originally came out in 1966, in stereo with the original album artwork. Just one difference: this is a green vinyl pressing limited to 1000 copies!"

"First vinyl reissue in over 45 years for a long-lost, pivotal jazz fusion record! This album, originally released in 1970 on the thinly-distributed Skye label, marks Airto's debut as a bandleader and captures the percussionist right at the time he recorded Bitches Brew with Miles Davis, and right before he joined Weather Report for their first album. Indeed, the line-up on this album reflects the fact that Airto had one foot in the NYC jazz scene and one foot in his native Brazil, as bassist Ron Carter joins Airto's countrymen Sivuca and Hermeto Pascoal, along with Airto's wife Flora Purim. The music's a fascinating blend of jazz-funk-fusion and Brazilian tropes, here presented on 180-gram black vinyl, housed inside the original wild, Hieronymus Bosch album art. Limited to 500 copies."

ROSENFELD, MARINA P.A./Hard Love LP
Restocked, last copies. On P.A./Hard Love, New York-based composer and conceptual sound artist Marina Rosenfeld generates an esoteric universe of radical sonic collisions. Developed initially in 2009, the album draws its roots following a series of idiosyncratic quasi-sculptural sound-system installations Rosenfeld installed in various disused and monumental sites including New York's Park Avenue Armory and Liverpool's Renshaw Hall car park. The music she composed for these installations was heterogeneous, repositioning resident noise from the sites (re-projected back into the sites via horns), her own voice and generous yet subtle electroacoustic elements. The results were more "tuned" atmosphere than active performance and sought to explore the potent combination of voice, amplification and space; playing with reflection and distortion, intelligibility, fantasies of publicness and broadcast. In 2012 Rosenfeld reached out to Annette Henry, aka Warrior Queen, and invited her to contribute original vocals to the project. The vocal contributions acted as a catalyst for the works; propelling the pre-existing compositions into new and unexpected directions. In combination with virtuoso cellist Okkyung Lee, the material was transplanted from live settings to the studio and transformed by a process of radical iteration. The resulting music asks questions of form, expectation and contemporary sound practices. P.A./Hard Love reveals the contingent nature of collaboration; something beautiful and complicated, and ultimately it's these relationships that form a kind of halfway point between conceptual art and contemporary music. It's in these in-between spaces that delicate, shimmering and ephemeral sounds can exist harmoniously with dissonant, abrasive, dark and complex audio states that are both explicit and ambiguous, anthemic and elusive. Limited vinyl edition of 500 copies housed in a gorgeous matte cello-glazed sleeve.

FIRE! ORCHESTRA Arrival CD
Their first two albums, Exit (RCD 2138CD/RLP 3138LP, 2013) and Enter (RCD 2158CD/RLP 3158LP, 2014), were presented with sizable and ambitious line-ups of 28 musicians. Ritual (RCD 2182CD/RLP 3182LP, 2016) saw it reduced to 21 and with Arrival it's been trimmed down to a "mere" 14, with the core trio of Fire! (Mats Gustafsson, Johan Berthling, and Andreas Werliin) and the two singers Mariam Wallentin and Sofia Jernberg being the only constant members since the beginning. Apart from this reduction, the main line-up difference is the introduction of a string quartet. This "cleanup" has worked wonders, keeping the rhythm and horn sections to their bare necessities, with the string quartet expanding the canvas and bringing a new, exciting dimension to the table. And on top of their game; the two powerful and sublime singers, quite different, but still blending perfectly. Drummer and producer Andreas Werliin should also be mentioned for his work in the audio department; rarely has there been such a detailed, warm, deep and dynamic mix from a relatively complex combination of instruments. Arrival is a collection of more individual compositions and songs, including two stunning cover versions. "Blue Crystal Fire" by visionary guitarist Robbie Basho was first heard on his 1978 album Visions of the Country. "At Last I Am Free" was originally written by Bernard Edwards and Nile Rogers of Chic. Although the rest of the tracks are credited to Berthling, Gustafsson, Werliin and Wallentin, it's important to stress that this time the orchestra members have had considerable creative input throughout the process. Arrival is light and shade, joy and despair, structure and improvisation, performed by an ensemble of excellent musicians.

FIRE! ORCHESTRA Arrival 2LP+CD
Double LP version. Includes CD. DJ TENNIS Gordon Starck EP 12"
Gerd Janson: "... 'Gordon' is such a record. Made one day before Miami's infamous Rakastella party, premiered there on Will Renuart's 'The Kiss' stage and being one of the highlights during a shared slot with DJ Tennis, I was secretly hoping for Running Back to get awarded with it. It basically sums up all the qualities of a DJ Tennis set: you get the highs and lows, the loud and quiet parts . . . 'Starck' on the other hand, scales it a bit down, but is equally overwhelming as are the atmospheric respectively cinematic versions of both tracks..."

KASPI & STRIDE Leanings LP
Kaspi & Stride is a new project from Justin Tripp, best known as one half of the Georgia equation. The second release on Alex Cobb's Soda Gong, sister label to Students of Decay, Leanings has its origins in rigorous yet laid back studio sessions, dual personal practice sensibilities that seem to get at Tripp's creative ethos as well as any descriptors might. The material here was born out of collaborative studio sessions with multi-instrumentalist Jimy Seitang (Conga Square/Stygian Stride) - the "Stride" of K&S. The music from these sessions has been reworked and recontextualized by Tripp to form the eight tracks found on the record. These compositions are heady and diverse, anchored by infectious drum patterns and intricate electronics, capably occupying a somewhat hard to define space between club-ready and home listening. "Vishing" throbs with a wide-eyed intensity, infused with the type of deceptively rudimentary synth stabs and bass swells that wouldn't be out of place on an early Hype Williams record. With contributions from Mary Lattimore and Jon Leland, "Kaptoxa" charts a more ethereal, if no less dizzying, course. Indeed, this is an album that navigates dense, tactile passages and airy, celestial planes with aplomb, making a case for Tripp's prowess as both composer and arranger with equal priority. The most important thing is to keep moving. Edition of 300, die-cut center hole on backside, includes download.

SFETSAS, KYRIAKOS Greek Fusion Orchestra Vol. 2 CD
Teranga Beat presents the second volume of Kyriakos Sfetsas' 1976 Greek Fusion Orchestra project. Sfetsas' vision behind the formation of GFO was to create a piece of work that would expand the boundaries of Greek traditional music. The result was a progressive-jazz fusion masterpiece comprising complex and intriguing compositions, performed by Athens' best musicians of the day. Following the success of Vol. 1 (TBCD 022CD/TBLP 022LP, 2018), Vol. 2 is a compilation of musical pieces Sfetsas recorded with the group right upon the completion of the Vol. 1 material. Vol. 2 is still reflective of his ambition of bringing together progressive jazz and traditional music, but it does so in a different manner. Although the element of traditional music remains present, it does not provide the compositional foundation for the songs (e.g. most pieces are no longer based exclusively on traditional musical forms). Jazzier and more complex than the first volume, Vol. 2 has a darker feeling, presenting Sfetsas not only as a musical experimentalist, but also as a demanding and distinctive composer who truly puts his musicians to the test. The recordings on this album are previously unreleased and form only a small part of his overall body of work with the GFO. The music was originally recorded stereo on reel tape with highest standards for the time, with the modern mastering process highlighting even more their original sound quality. The result is a truly impressive and pure audiophile album. CD version comes in digipak with slipcase; Includes a booklet with photos and liner notes outlining the story of the band members.

DROWSE Light Mirror LP
"In April of 2018, Drowse's Kyle Bates left his home in Portland, OR, for an artist residency in barren northern Iceland. Much of Bates' time there was spent in self-imposed isolation, giving him ample space to ponder the nature of solitude, and what it means to be 'closed' or 'open' to the world. Upon returning home, Bates worked obsessively. Maya Stoner, his longtime creative partner, sometimes came to sing, but recordings were mostly done alone. The dichotomy of his Icelandic musings materialized in a very real way as he neglected his personal relationships in favor of his art. While he was confronting his life-long fear of intimacy, and reconciling himself to a diagnosis of Bipolar 1, Bates found that the means he employed to conquer these obstacles -- self-reflection through art -- carried with them an equal measure of misery. Light Mirror, Drowse's second album for The Flenser, is a subtle exploration of these contradictory attitudes and their consequences that can be heard as an artifact of sonic self-sabotage. Light Mirror falls within a lineage of overcast Pacific Northwest albums (think Grouper's Dragging A Dead Deer Up A Hill), but finds Drowse pushing past its slowcore roots. The album's prismatic sound reflects experimental electronic, noise pop, black metal, krautrock, and more through Kyle's distinct song-worlds. The lyrics are ruminations on the idea of multiple-selves, identity, paranoia, fear of the body, alcohol abuse, social media, the power of memory, the truths that are revealed when one is alone, and the significance of human contact. They were influenced by filmmaker Andrei Tarkovsky and poet Louise Glück, who both address self-contradiction. Mastered by Nicholas Wilbur (Mount Eerie, Planning for Burial) at the Unknown, the album showcases a striking maturation in sound. Light Mirror is Drowse's most intimate and desolate work to date."

BLUE ORCHIDS The Magical Record Of Blue Orchids LP
LP version. While recording 2018's Righteous Harmony Fist (PICI 015CD/LP), Blue Orchids messed about with a few covers of insanely obscure low-fi garage/psych tunes. Few casual aficionados of rock music will know more than a song or two from this set -- the likes of The Penny Saints and The Aardvarks and their kin not exactly being household names. In fact, of the seven '60s acts with songs covered here, none lasted more than a handful of singles. Complementing those songs are covers of songs by two more recent groups. The swirling keyboards of The Growlers' "Pavement And The Boot" is distilled back to its fundamental garage essence, while Crystal Stilts' two-minute original, "Love Is A Wave", is slowed down and channeled back to the melodic pop wonder lingering beneath its Reid Brothers buzzsaw and pays respect to the band, who'd themselves covered Blue Orchids' "Low Profile" a few years back. Of special interest will be "Addicted To The Day", the album's key song, the words for which were recently found in a 1977 notebook of Bramah's which at Mark E. Smith had borrowed and then scribbled down the "poem" in thanks, to which Bramah added music. The haunting lines, "How could I have suspected my abysmal future/ A doom which has haunted me/ And turned me into a wreck and a parody", are the centerpiece of the album, a concept compiled of bits and pieces of esoteric tunes, telling a tale of Faustian doom in a pact with forces of evil.

RUSSELL & LUKE WOOD, BRUCE Visceral Realists LP
"Debut album by the New Zealand duo of Bruce Russell (Dead C, Handful Of Dust, etc) and Luke Wood. Visceral Realists is a high-concept commentary on the state of vinyl, analog recording, music culture, art, etc. A 45-rpm bullet of short bursts of free electric sound, the music here is tactile and rough but not 'noise music.' Russell and Wood play over loops of scratchy records, with their guitars and electronics surging to get over the wall. Russell's guitar sound from his vintage transistor amp and anti-style is instantly recognizable from countless classic Dead C sides, but the tracks are more painterly than recent DC epics -- these are celebratory vignettes of thoughts -- singles, if you will. Originally made as an unfindable edition of twenty by Wood's Ilam Press label to accompany an exhibit of NZ lathe-cut records, this new edition is beautifully packaged in a debossed and letterpress printed sleeve designed by Wood and printed by Stumptown in Portland. Two color risographs printed by Wood in NZ are tipped onto the jacket, and an additional two inserts provide revelatory notes by Russell and glam shots of the instruments that made the sounds. Also includes download slip."

ASTRAL SOCIAL CLUB & GRUMBLING FUR TIME MACHINE ORCHESTRA Plasma Splice Trifle LP
"Debut collaboration between these like-minded English underground titans, perfectly mixing the long-form pop eccentricities of Grumbling Fur with the free electric sound of Astral Social Club to produce four epic and memorable tracks. The music is dense and layered, with hidden hooks, haunting vocals, unidentifiable electronic shuddering, delicate ambience, etc. Challenging but completely accessible and beautiful stuff. After a brief vocal declaration of purpose, 'Back To The Egg' rides a motorik pulse ala Harmonia or Kraftwerk for ten hypnotic minutes. 'Three Years Apart' pulses gently in a burbling cloud, reminding that along with crafting song gems, Grumbling Fur has collaborated with noted avant-composer/performer Charlemagne Palestine. 'Ozone Antifreeze Intelligence' layers electronics over a haunting piano and vocal melody, framed by subliminal fuzz guitar. 'Toejam Boxdrum' closes the album with an uproarious polyrhythm hidden by more layers of soft-focus electro-fizz, gradually giving way to thick bass riffs and tremelo'd interjections."

YANO, AKIKO Iroha Ni Konpeitou CD
Wewantsounds present a reissue of Akiko Yano's Iroha Ni Konpeitou, originally released in 1977. Another superb Akiko Yano album and one of her funkiest, highlighting her singing and songwriting talents. Iroha Ni Konpeitou is perhaps Akiko Yano's best-known album in the Western world not just because of its striking front cover -- a shot by famed photographer Bishin Jumonji featuring Akiko holding an inflatable dolphin. A slick mix of Japanese pop and New York funk, the album was recorded in Tokyo except for the title track which was recorded in NYC with an all-star line-up consisting of Rick Marotta, David Spinozza, Will Lee, and Nicky Marrero. For the rest of the album, Akiko is accompanied by some of the best musicians from the Tokyo music scene gravitating around the groups Happy End and Tin Pan Alley: the ubiquitous Haruomi Hosono on bass, Tatsuo Hayashi on drums, Shigeru Suzuki on guitar, to name just a few. Interestingly, two Hosono compositions are featured on the album: "Ai Ai Gasa" which he recorded on his 1973 landmark debut Hosono House and "Hourou" originally recorded in '75 by singer and musician Chu Kosaka, on the eponymous album Horo. Last but not least, Hideki Matsutake is handling the keyboard programming duties on the album as Yano is playing a wide array of keyboards: Moog IIIc, Mini Moog, String Ensemble, on top of the Fender Rhodes, Clavinet, and Yamaha CP7C. Matsutake would soon become programmer in chief for Yellow Magic Orchestra, touring and playing with them around the world (like Yano herself). Although the album feels very accessible and funky, there are complex keyboard layers underneath as on the first short introduction "KAWAJI", a short electro fantasy, or on such tracks as "Ai Ai Gasa" and "Kino Wa Mou" on which Akiko is playing bass with her Moog, making the album a richly textured and inventive one once you scratch its surface. The tracks on the album flow effortlessly also highlighting Akiko Yano's superb songwriting and knack for creating fascinating pop song. "Iroha Ni Konpeitou" sounds as fresh and beautiful as when it first came out more than forty years ago and will please the growing circle of Akiko Yano fans around the world as a welcome addition to her brilliant discography. Remastered sound. First release outside of Japan.
