GUERRERO, TOMMY Soul Food Taqueria 2LP
2019 repress, 2017 release. Be With Records present a reissue of Tommy Guerrero's Soul Food Taqueria, originally released in 2003. It's rare that a certain sound is entirely an artist's own. Although undeniably a stew of impeccable influences -- from blues to folk to Latin to dusty funk, soul and hip-hop -- one cannot hear a Tommy Guerrero song without immediately recognizing it as his -- and his only. The cult skater from San Francisco is globally renowned as one of the original members of the legendary "Bones Brigade" team. And as an accomplished multi-instrumentalist, his laid-back soul is beloved by all who've basked in its blissful glow. His albums that surfaced on Mo Wax at the turn of the century have been treasured since their release and it's two of his most vital LPs. The originals were quietly pressed on to a single piece of vinyl, so Be With Records worked closely with Tommy to offer fresh, limited editions. Soul Food Taqueria continued Guerrero's guitar soul but represented a step forward with its polished production and greater complexity of instrumentation. Denied the promotion it deserved upon release, it flew under the radar. It is now the most wanted record of his wondrous back catalog. Guerrero's atmospheric touch and subtle guitar provide lush, glimmering pieces of musical texture. Within his spacious compositions, uniquely arranged instruments flourish alongside each other to create a languid soundtrack for halcyon days. From bossa nova, samba, and cumbia rhythms to understated folk, funk and soul grooves, this is another exotic set of mellow gold. Dubby, bass-heavy instrumentals give way to moody folk-soul -- witness "It Gets Heavy", featuring melancholic vocals from Gresham Taylor -- whilst "Thank You MK" is a gentle ode to the tropics, featuring ethereal instrumentation, bright bass and warm, jazzy guitars. The second half in particular contains a number of stunning ambient tracks -- check "Lost Unfound", "Another Brother Gone", and "Broken Blood" -- built around minimalist, laid-back grooves, and detailed guitar orchestrations which wouldn't be out of place on the latest Jonny Nash release. Guerrero closes this flawless set with a moment of true beauty. Restrained and graceful, "Falling Awake" is a pared back piece containing meditative guitar melodies set against melancholic piano arrangements. Remastered. 180 gram vinyl; expanded to double-LP and presented in a gatefold sleeve.

MASON AND BUTCH DAYO, VAUGHAN Feel My Love LP
Be With Records presents a reissue of Vaughan Mason and Butch Dayo's Feel My Love, originally released on Salsoul in 1983. If ever an album could transport one to the hazy sunshine and imagined halcyon paradise of Southern California in the mid-1980s, or could capture the early evening warmth of hanging at an inclusive boogie jam as it approaches "magic hour" in Santa Ana or Anaheim, then it's Feel My Love. A brilliantly produced deep slung, low rider funk classic, it's a masterpiece of "funk love music." A perfectly formed five track mini LP of unparalleled heat, there's one song here that, above the rest, represents Orange County boogie-funk. A straight killer beloved by all that have had the pleasure of moving to it. A track that can fill up a dance floor within seconds of its starting. That song is the eternal title track, "Feel My Love". This is a work of art that made people fall in love with the funk -- it transcends the limitations of genre. "Feel My Love"'s deceptive simplicity makes it perfect to drop during a house set, a classic funk party or at a west coast rap jam. It's sexy, deeply emotional, melancholic, hopeful, passionate and just radiates so much raw energy -- this is music. The rest of the record is hardly filler though. Opener "Oh, Love" is a dizzying, emotional slow jam. With heaven-sent vocals riding gorgeous, sweeping keys that alternate between sweet twinkling lines and funk-fuelled stabbing -- it's sensational. A rollerskating jam named "Rollalong Songs" is an ultra-swish piece of dance floor dynamite; its slick drums, staccato piano, and neck-snapping claps underscore Dayo's buoyant vocals. It's essentially "Bounce, Rock, Skate, Roll Part II". The flip begins with "Party On The Corner" with smoother-than-silk vocals, day-glo synths, a bubbling bassline, and guitar licks that would surely receive the Prince seal of approval. It's another example of how Mason and Dayo flirt with perfection so routinely. The majestic closer, the kaleidoscopic, cow-bell-assisted synth-funk heater "You Can Do It" is a proto-rap groover that truly smokes. This LP is a stone-cold jam and finding original copies on vinyl at affordable prices has been tough for years. Mastered by Simon Francis, cut by Pete Norman, with lovingly reproduced artwork, this Be With reissue ensures this legendary LP now sounds, looks and feels as sensational as it should. 180 gram pressing.

LOGG Logg LP
Be With Records presents a reissue of Logg's self-titled LP, originally issued on Salsoul Records in 1981. The undisputed Godfather of boogie, Leroy Burgess' Logg project is his masterpiece. Logg is one of the greatest albums of the post-disco era; it's one of Be With's favorite-ever LPs and so it's a complete honor to be reissuing it. With all the touchstones of Burgess's finest work -- breezy grooves, undulating synths, funk-drenched bass, and life-affirming lyrics -- delivered with gospel-derived vocals and harmonies, it's a record to uplift both body and spirit. Already a cult soul figure as lead singer of Black Ivory, Burgess cut his teeth as arranger, vocalist, and songwriter with producer Patrick Adams on essential late-'70s projects like Phreek and Dazzle. He went on to define the essence of "boogie": the vibrant underground dance sound that stood in contrast to commercial disco. With its reduced speed the cool boogie of Burgess has the disco bounce, just more laid back. All six tracks here could have been stand-alone hits; indeed, some of them were. But together they are also an incredibly cohesive album. In short, it's a thrilling showcase for Burgess' finest arranging and production work - with his vocals at their euphoric peak alongside the inventive rhythm section of Aaron (Sonny) T. Davenport on drums and James Calloway on bass. Opener "(You've Got) That Something" is a balmy sunshine groover with an insistent chorus whilst the timeless vocal of "Dancing Into The Stars" -- married to percolating synth and airtight drums -- showcases the chemistry between Burgess and the rhythm section. The fusion of funk and gospel-influenced harmonies which propels "Something Else" is remarkable: deep, joyous, and bouncy. Infamously mixed by Larry Levan, "I Know You Will" is an easy glide, all rollicking electric piano underpinned by a precise and relentlessly upbeat groove. "Lay It On The Line" radiates smooth, understated brilliance, elevated by interstellar keys and finally album-closer "Sweet To Me" is a chilled-out gem of profound soulful elegance. Logg has long been a hit with the likes of Kenny Dope and Dam-Funk whilst, MCDE and Harvey Sutherland have also cited it as an influence. This reissue ensures this legendary record now sounds, looks and feels as sensational as it deserves. Mastered by Simon Francis, cut by Pete Norman with reproduced artwork, this is a reissue that does justice to this classic LP. 180 gram pressing.

RAWLS & LES MCCANN LTD., LOU Stormy Monday LP
"We've added 3 previously unreleased recordings: 'Blues Is A Woman', 'A Little Les Of Lou's Blues', and an alternative version of 'Stormy Monday' - to the original LP! Carefully remastered by Master & Servant and pressed on 180-gram vinyl. When Lou Rawls (1933-2006) entered the recording studio in LA in February 1962 to record his first album, Stormy Monday in collaboration with Les McCann's combo, hardly anyone could have guessed what success and popularity the black singer, songwriter, producer and film actor would achieve in the coming decades. In 1966 he made his breakthrough with 'Love Is A Hurtin' Thing' and reached the top of the R&B charts. Four years earlier the situation was different. Rawls had grown up in the south side of Chicago, got in touch with gospel music early, met Curtis Mayfield and replaced Sam Cooke in the Highway QC's a few years later. At eighteen, he moved to the West Coast, released his first recordings, and created a masterpiece along with jazz pianist Les McCann, a prototype of the cool jazz/blues melange so characteristic for the LA music scene. The silky deep baritone voice carries the reinterpretations of such famous blues classics as '(They Call It) Stormy Monday', 'See See See Rider', 'I'm Gonna Move To The Outskirts Of Town' or 'In The Evening When The Sun Goes Down'. Lou Rawls just possesses that voice! But besides the song selection and Lou Rawls' goose-bump producing voice, the small combo of Les McCann -- also known as Ltd. -- must be credited for the incredibly coherent production. Part of the recordings were made during a night session, which must be regarded as one of the gentlest and most relaxed recording sessions in history. With Stormy Monday Rawls and McCann turn away from the then popular 'Neo-Gospel' or 'Soul-Jazz'. Their wonderful arrangements are reminiscent of the great R&B of the early 50s. The result: pure electricity! In other words: one of the most beautiful cool jazz/blues albums of its time!"

GALES, FRED Het Jakoba Prieel CD
Black Sweat Records presents a reissue of Fred Gales's Het Jakoba Prieel, originally released on tape by Sound Reporters in 1986. Het Jacoba Prieel is a very weird compendium of imaginary soundscapes, in which every coordinate seems lost and totally deviated. Gales, in collaboration with Walter Maioli and Pit Piccinelli, presents his idea of a concrete organic music, a diary of signals and sound impressions inspired by the great tradition of primitive music, an extreme investigation of love on the primordial beauty of sound expression. Travelling into the properties of all matter of the sonic environment, the members of the legendary Sound Reporters generate, transform, mix, filter, and modulate natural and electronic sounds in the magical analog studio of the Utrecht Institute of Sonology. From a single movement of sound fragments are opened catalyst flows and circuits, flickering sequencers and oscillations of luminous channels; futuristic tribalism, hypnotic fossil percussion, alien sounds, dreamlike trips in the jungle, echoes of rustling and rumbles otherworldly, rain waterfalls and shells in the pond, calls of animals and insects, heart beats, and radar waves. Everything is just pure sound and surrounds the listener.

CARRETTA, DAVID Night Panic 2LP
David Carretta, well known for his releases on International Gigolo and as a pioneer of French electro/techno, is the author of a modern techno that paradoxically draws its roots in the best of the 1980s. On Night Panic, his first solo album since 2008, the incisive and hypnotic melodies of "Face" and "Prince of the Cook", interpreted by David, or "Dark Candies" sung by the Berlin artist Aga Wilk, evoke his obsession for disco Italo and the seductive tones of the synth-pop of New Order or Depeche Mode. The martial beats and hypnotic synth lines of "Come Here Come Down", "Destination Love", or "In Case Of Emergency", recall the sound of the cold and percussive electronics of the EBM, a music nourished by the nihilism of punk and the metallic sounds of the industrial current, which had then invented Front 242 or Nitzer Ebb. However, on this fourth solo album, the French musician is never satisfied with pasticher the music of yesterday. It draws its DNA, vocabulary and of course some of its instruments, especially its favorite synthesizer, the Sequential Circuits Pro One as well as the Korg MS-20, synthesizers formerly used by Vince Clark, DAF, or Dangerous Liaisons. "Dark Candies" features Romance Disaster.

REV, MARTIN Clouds of Glory CD
Bureau B present a reissue of Martin Rev's Clouds of Glory, originally released in 1985. Martin Rev is best known as one half of the seminal duo Suicide (with Alan Vega). Listening to his solo albums, it becomes clear that Rev was responsible for the group's music. Clouds of Glory, his second solo effort, was released on the French label New Rose in 1985. Suicide mirrored the reductive and radical traits of the contemporaneous punk scene that was in the process of emerging, but their electronic, minimalist form of language was so unique, so innovative, that they would become a major influence on the likes of Daft Punk, Air, and Aphex Twin. Alongside his work with Suicide, Martin Rev continued as a solo artist, releasing his eponymous debut album in 1980 on New York's Infidelity label. Rev's early solo excursions can be traced back to the original ideas which can be found -- in modified form -- in Suicide songs: as instrumental versions which have been texturally enriched, like a familiar figure which has nevertheless taken on a completely new existence. Five years later, in 1985, Martin Rev released his sophomore solo LP on the Parisian label New Rose Records, although the recordings on Clouds of Glory actually dated back to the earlier part of the decade, following on from the Suicide sessions for the duo's second album. Martin Rev remembers: "Clouds of Glory was produced from visual and musical sketches I had in mind which then coincided with an invitation by Marty Thau, previously Suicide's manager, to take advantage of studio time he had accumulated from other projects. The essence of my ideas was then realized in the studio. Clouds was started in 1981 and completed in 1984 when additional studio time was made possible to complete it, based on the offer by New Rose Records." In spite of Clouds of Glory having been recorded with the same equipment as the Alan Vega/Martin Rev Suicide album (1980), it occupies a completely different space, evoking the solemnity of religious music through its underlying meditative tone. "I look now upon the album as part of a personal journey into the frontier of music; a process which is never ending in its revealing of possibilities to satisfy my musical aspirations."

REV, MARTIN Cheyenne CD
Bureau B present a reissue of Martin Rev's Cheyenne, originally released in 1991. The sphere of Martin Rev's influence and the relevance of his music may well be related to the fact that he was one of the first artists who succeeded in grasping the abstraction of electronic music, infusing it with a sense of immediacy built on raw energy. Whilst the likes of La Monte Young, Terry Riley, Steve Reich, Philip Glass, and Kraftwerk were busy digging in the electronic music garden, Martin Rev found inspiration in the streets of New York. Rev's music is informed by characteristic influences of the city, a place where doo-wop harmonies intermingle with the hiss and hum of the metropolis, dissolving into a collage of noise. So it is that dreamy, chiming melodies blur into ominous whirrs and drones emanating from rhythm machines and layers of distorted synthesizer. This polarity between convergence and alienation describes something deeply American, as reflected in the track names and the cover image of a rodeo rider: "The idea came from the way the tracks sounded as instrumentals. They took on a different visually descriptive dimension, even more so in combination. The visualization was an immediate soundscape of the American landscape. That's where the titles and cover came from." Many of the pieces found on Cheyenne can be traced back to the sessions for the second Suicide album Alan Vega / Martin Rev (1980) which was produced by Ric Ocasek, singer for The Cars. Almost a decade passed before Martin Rev got around to editing and developing the material. "Most of the album was recorded in 1980, but the remaining few tracks from 1988 into the early '90s. The '80s tracks all went under a concerted editing process, to make them work for me even better as instrumentals. I didn't get around to that until there was an offer to release them, which was in the early 90's as well." Indeed, Cheyenne plays out like a rural, yet intense road movie, crossing a landscape rich in beauty and contradictions.

JAAR, NICOLAS Space Is Only Noise LP
2019 repress. LP version. Second edition with amended tracklisting (the track "I Got A Woman" has been deleted). Four years after his debut EP on Wolf + Lamb, Nicolas Jaar, the New Yorker by way of Chile returns to Circus Company with Space Is Only Noise, an uncompromising manifesto on traces of the past, love lost, and spectres of the future. Jaar has made it quite apparent over the course of his nascent catalog and increasingly sought-after live sets that challenge is an intrinsic part of his creative discourse. Few are the producers of any age with the guts to ride a sub-100-bpm tempo at peak-time in the techno Mecca of Berlin, and fewer still are those who receive an ecstatic hands-in-the-air response for their precocious efforts. It is precisely this sense of risk which elevates Space Is Only Noise beyond the realm of valiant first effort or crossover dance music oddity. Those looking to wade through the sea of Jaar's potential influences will quickly find themselves in the deep waters of golden age Factory records, the home-spun digitalism of Mille Plateaux, Endtroducing-era DJ Shadow and Eric Satie. Jaar gently coaxes his listener into the experience from the opening sounds of rolling waves on "être," but quickly transitions into the sophisticated percussion and meandering melodies that characterize his sound. Jaar seeks, and often finds, beauty in melancholy on the first few tracks of the album. As the album begins to accelerate with "Too Many Kids Finding Rain In The Dust," Jaar confronts us with the often forgotten reality that our sadness is not mutually exclusive on the dancefloor. Suddenly, on "Keep Me There," Jaar's voice appears over the delicious, rumbling melody. Though your hips stir to the relentless bass line and the sexiness of the voices, your heart is jolted out of its luxurious malaise when horns erupt seconds later. "How can you talk about a landscape without showing the sky and the earth?" a voice asks, translating from the French on "être." So Jaar concludes, revisiting the same track to end the album. Complete landscapes such as these are only realized in contrast -- the indulgent against the reserved, the sky against the earth; lightness and darkness. Space Is Only Noise is a tour de force with few modern equals, and a great sign of things to come from one of electronic music's most exciting producers.

LLYN Y CWN Twll Du CD
Llyn Y Cwn's Twll Du (Black Hole) is an ominous dark ambient journey through vast atmospheric landscapes. Each beautifully-crafted opus is based on a bespoke field recording and is named after an area of Cwm Idwal, home of the Twll Du. Swelling, monolithic drones reveal the majestic power of the mountains. The music conveys an immersive atmosphere and is intended to be played as the listener falls into a deep sleep. Llyn Y Cwn (Lake Of The Dogs) is a small lake at 715m in the Glyder mountain range of Snowdonia, North Wales. The Devil's Kitchen is the name given to the dark, black crack which splits the rock of Clogwyn y Geifr (Cliff Of The Goat) between Y Garn and Glyder Fawr. The Welsh name for Devil's Kitchen is Twll Du, meaning 'black hole', because of the plume of steam that is often seen rising from the crack resembling a chimney. It's said when steam can be seen rising from the chimney, the Devil is cooking. File next to fellow Welshman Lustmord.Benjamin Ian Powell on the project's genesis: "I am an electronics technician for the School of Ocean Sciences at Bangor University; I spend a lot of time of time at sea on scientific research cruises which is where most of my music is written using a laptop and headphones. I have been on research trips to the Arctic several times on Russian, British and Canadian icebreakers, an experience that has been a large inspiration to my music. I have lived in North Wales all my life and spend as much time as I can in my camper van in the mountains."Presented in a six-panel digipak with breathtaking photography by the artist.

DELUSION, ISAAC Midnight Sun/Early Morning LP
Isaac Delusion drew his imagination from trips to Iceland and elsewhere, from experiences. Everything has grown, some dates in New York for the CMJ Festival, Berlin, Barcelona or Warsaw, the Pitchfork Festival, Radio Nova, vinyl, meetings. The group is apart, it wanders while preserving its identity -- the spirit of Cracki Records hovers over the project. First discovery of the label in 2012, the duo barely existed. The dream sticks to their skin, in fact. Just as when trying to catch one, it flies away, their music is elusive. The first disc spoke of a sun at midnight, the second is dawn. The chosen horizon is not defined, the four artists are still searching for each other and continue their path with candor.

BROTHER RESISTANCE Tonite Is De Night 12"
"Exclusive first-time re-release in cooperation with Brother Resistance. Out of the social unrest and revolutionary times of the early 1970s a new musical art form emerged on the streets of Port of Spain, Trinidad & Tobago. A group of young guys started to combine poetry with drumming and created the musical art form that is known today as Rapso. Poets known as much for their fiery verses as they were for leading protests were at the vanguard of the 1970s Black Power revolution. There was a new consciousness building in the Trinidad and Tobago arts scene. The two most influential characters were Cheryl Byron and Lancelot Layne. Lutalo 'Brother Resistance' Masimba and others would play basketball during the day and come back out at night, 'liming' and playing drums. Other people from the block would join with instruments and Brother Resistance would perform his poetry on the rhythms. The prestigious boys' school that Resistance attended refused to acknowledge his attempts at creating verses that reflected the rhythm of the Trinidad and Tobago creole. 'They said it wasn't poetry. They didn't want to put it in the school magazine.' Resistance and his friends toyed with other words to describe their style. They came up with 'rapsody' but one night during a show in Santa Cruz somebody in the audience shouted out 'How you could rap so!' And the rest is history. They recorded their first album Bustin Out in 1980. More albums followed and they started to work as producers. In 1986 the band performed at 'Caribbean Focus' festival in London and toured the U.K. which helped to lift their reputation internationally. The same year Brother Resistance decided to produce his first solo album and went to England to record Rapso Take Over. This album contains the highly acclaimed tracks 'Ring De Bell', 'Dancing Shoes Rapso' and 'Star Wars Rapso'. An unreleased take of 'Wars In Rapso' is featured on this Cree Records 12"."

DAY AND THE FOREFATHERS, GRAHAM Good Things LP
"The crucial ingredients of The Prisoners, Prime Movers, Solarflares and The Gaolers extracted and squeezed into one stripped down power trio... Graham Day, Allan Crockford and Wolf Howard have been intermittently blasting out their muscular version of Medway garage-rock (tm) in various combinations and guises over a period of more than 30 years, releasing dozens of albums between them. Graham and Allan were in The Prisoners (82-86), before forming The Prime Movers with Wolf in 1988, releasing 3 albums before they split in 1993. The trio were re-united in 1999 as the Solarflares, releasing another 5 albums until once again calling it a day in 2004. They also found time to play in various pairings over that period in the original line-up of The James Taylor Quartet and Goodchilde (Allan and Wolf), and Billy Childish's Buff Medways (Graham and Wolf). These days Graham and Wolf also play cinematic instrumentals in The Senior Service, and Allan leads psych-popsters The Galileo 7 (both bands also on Damaged Goods). The three re-united as a live band in 2013. The Forefathers formed around the idea that the time was right for rifling through the Graham Day Songbook and delivering a 'best of...' set: stripped down live versions of the best of The Prisoners, The Prime Movers, The Solarflares and Graham's most recent band, The Gaolers. Recent gigs have proved that time has not dimmed their fire, energy and passion. If anything, their live performances have been more ferocious than ever. One school of thought says that The Forefathers are essentially a 'tribute act' -- a tribute to themselves and their shared musical history... if that is true, they are the purest and best tribute act in existence -- no one delivers a Graham Day song like Graham Day, Allan Crockford and Wolf Howard."

Much like the chess-playing supercomputer of the same name, Deep Blue EP occupies a space between electronic weight and the human touch, fusing together icy digital synths borrowed from grime with off-kilter grooves and jazzy motifs.

DUBBLESTANDART Dubblestandart & Firehouse Crew Present Reggae Classics CD
Dubblestandart & Firehouse Crew present -- with the deepest respect to the originators -- a limited selection of reworks of reggae classics. The album focuses on works that have been pivotal for the inspiration of Dubblestandart's bandleader Paul Zasky since day one, when forming the band. Today this music is considered classic reggae, what this little island called Jamaica has provided in content and creation, especially roots reggae of the late '60s, '70s, and '80s. This doesn't even scratch the surface of the political actuality of many of these songs, which seem to respond to today's world of unrest as if they were written yesterday, coming straight from the heart of all those much-loved and admired originators.

NOISESHAPER King Size Dub Special CD
The sound company operating under the project name Noiseshaper is poised to release their new King Size Dub Special album. The band received great acclaim for their first albums, which were released on the legendary and infamous Rockers Hifi label Different Drummer. They later became celebrated for their musical contribution to the US television series CSI: Miami. The Viennese coffee table boys Axel Hirn and Florian Fleischmann achieved cult status with their 12-inch single The Only Redeemer (2002), which was later released in the US by Quango (Island Records /Palm Pictures) and fast became a permanent fixture on the playlists of the best and most popular DJs in Berlin, Vienna, Tokyo, Paris, London, and New York. The next dancefloor filler was "All A Dem A Do", sung by Juggla, which was the band's first release to get heavy rotation on many European and US radio stations. Next up were remixes by and for heavyweights such as Sly And Robbie, Outkast, Seven Dub, and Carl Douglas. Noiseshaper's defining sound has been distilled and condensed as an utterly distinctive blend of housey downbeats with a fat reggae flavor, which has brought the group international acclaim and popularity. King Size Dub Special is the essence of Noiseshaper and is another impressive display of how their musical style has progressed. This is dub as a style, with all its reference points between commerce and innovation. These are 15 pounding dub-flavored tunes, best for bringing the dancefloors of the dub universe to a boiling point -- heavy bass for heavy dancing!

JUNG AN TAGEN Proxy States CD
On Proxy States, his third release on Editions Mego, Jung An Tagen continues to expand his unique vision of oblique electronic music mixed with future dance club sound. On Proxy States techno is evolving into another realm, manifesting as his most formulated attempt to combine modern composition techniques with ritualistic techno aesthetics. Here he takes his obsession with structure to a more narrative build-up, creating new paths and textures around his infectious beats. With this structure, Jung An Tagen develops an emotional relationship between repetition and dissonance -- it's addictive music, music in constant explosion. The 12 seconds of the first track, "Spill (False)" sound like a recreation of The Big Bang, creating the perfect intro for this molecular polyrhythmic adventure. It also creates the connection/disconnection with his previous work, Agent Im Objekt (EMEGO 248LP, 2018), bridging the two but also creating a space to embark on a new sonic trip. This self-contained explosion offers the right coordinates and propels the listener to Jung An Tagen's sonic realm. All of this is done with his usual fearless but mindful approach. His unique exercises with structure, time and sound create an ecstatic familiarity with the sounds while at the same time inducing a creeping physical alienation. In other words, some parts may be rhythmically infectious, others will give you no chance to immerse. The stimulation is astute and continuous, encouraging an out-of-this-world experience. The main arc of Proxy States consists of a 16 against 17 poly-rhythmic synth line that through different intonations of the kick drum always transforms its syntax. This synth line always scales up 1 key, in the middle of the track, foreseeing the upcoming structure. While these tracks (3, 4, 5, 6: "Wreath Products") follow an almost obsessive-compulsive order, the remaining tracks seem to blow up the structure entirely like the last scenes of the 1970 Michelangelo Antonioni's film Zabriskie Point, creating an event inside the event. Proxy States was impossible to press on vinyl but the fast, sharp and wild grooves of Jung An Tagen's new album are incredibly synched with the concept of an ever accelerating future. Mastering by Cam Deas, artwork and layout by Stefan Juster.

AMBARCHI, OREN Simian Angel CD
After a trilogy of spectacular explorations of relentlessly driving rhythms -- Sagittarian Domain (EMEGO 144CD/LP, 2012), Quixotism (EMEGO 202CD/LP, 2014), and Hubris (EMEGO 227CD/LP, 2016) -- Simian Angel finds Oren Ambarchi renewing his focus on his singular approach to the electric guitar, returning in part to the spacious canvases of classic releases like Grapes From The Estate (BT 036LP/TO 061CD) while also following his muse down previously unexplored byways. Reflecting Ambarchi's profound love of Brazilian music, Simian Angel features the remarkable percussive talents of Cyro Baptista, a key part of the Downtown scene who has collaborated with everyone from John Zorn and Derek Bailey to Robert Palmer and Herbie Hancock. Like the music of Nana Vasconcelos and Airto Moreira, Simian Angel places Baptista's dexterous and rhythmically nuanced handling of traditional Brazilian percussion instruments into an unexpected musical context. On the first side, "Palm Sugar Candy", Baptista's spare and halting rhythms wind their way through a landscape of gliding electronic tones, gently rising up and momentarily subsiding until the piece's final minutes leave Ambarchi's guitar unaccompanied. While the rich, swirling harmonics of Ambarchi's guitar performance are familiar to listeners from his previous recordings, the subtly wavering, synthetic guitar tone you hear is quite new, coming across at times like an abstracted, splayed-out take on the '80s guitar synth work of Pat Metheny or Bill Frisell. Equally new is the harmonic complexity of Ambarchi's playing, which leaves behind the minimalist simplicity of much of his previous work for a constantly-shifting play between lush consonance and uneasy dissonance. Beginning with a beautiful passage of unaccompanied percussion dominated by the berimbau, the side-long title piece carries on the first side's exploration of subtle, non-linear dynamic arcs, taking the form of a gently episodic suite, in which distinctive moments, like a lyrical passage of guitar-triggered piano, unexpectedly arise from intervals of drifting tones like dream images suddenly cohering. In the piece's second half, the piano tones become increasingly more clipped and synthetic, scattering themselves into aleatoric melodies that call to mind an imaginary collaboration between Albert Marcoeur and David Behrman, grounded all the while by the pulse of Baptista's percussion. Subtle yet complex, fleeting yet emotionally affecting, Simian Angel is an essential chapter in Ambarchi's restlessly exploratory oeuvre. Personnel: Oren Ambarchi - guitars & whatnot; Cyro Baptista - percussion & voice.Recorded by Randall Dunn, Joerg Hiller, Iuri Oriente, and Oren Ambarchi. Photography by Traianos Pakioufakis. ROTLA Trasmissioni LP
Mario Pierro, aka Raiders of the Lost ARP (ROTLA), returns to Edizioni Mondo. Trasmissioni is his debut LP under this moniker, using fictitious TV show themes as an excuse to create his musically most eclectic record so far. Departing slightly from the Balearic and prog rock influences of the previous Laguna EP (MONDO 002EP, 2015), in Trasmissioni, ROTLA covers many territories: opening with the science-celebrating arpeggios of "Progressi Della Scienza" (advances in science), to the funky, off-beat grooves of "Telemusic", then taking a step into a disco during "Nightlife", before programming his rocket towards eerie Nordic drum machines and Hammond organs in "Esterno Neve" and "Effetto Notte", and many planets more. A welcome edition to the ever-expanding Edition Mondo universe, a record you can't grow tired of. Eco-Friendly green artwork that shows how tiny we all are. Gatefold sleeve; 180 gram vinyl. On Edizioni Mondo: The name Mondo has its roots in "Mondo Movies", an Italian movie genre born in the '60s. Mondo movies are characterized by documentary-like content that addresses several topics from around the world ("mondo"). The Mondo label has the goal to produce music that is descriptive of concepts, images and environments. Mondo is inspired by library music, a genre frequently used as theme or background music in radio, film and television in that very same period. Production music libraries typically offer a broad range of musical styles and genres describing everything ranging from deserts to war and sports. Library music composers and session performers had no constraint at all. They typically work anonymously, have rarely become known outside their professional circle, and they have produced a very creative catalog. The Mondo productions start with four releases dedicated to seascapes; scenarios range from sea fauna to poaching, from natural parks to sea dunes.

WILSON TANNER II LP
Wilson Tanner come to shore with II, a new album of floating melodies, lightly salted. Throwing electroacoustic conventions overboard, Andrew Wilson (Andras) and John Tanner (Eleventeen Eston) recorded this new work aboard a 1950s riverboat with a resourceful array of weatherproof electronic instruments and a long extension lead. These eight compositions pull in a by-catch of maritime folklore; of siren and selkie, seagull and engine oil slick. A change of course from their debut album 69, the ambient temperature drops as II casts out to sea in uncertain weather and returns to the safe harbors of Port Phillip Bay. The seafarers head out to "My Gull"'s poised optimism -- the birds watch but do they listen? By the arrival of "Loch and Key," the shoreline has dissolved completely, the boat floating in serene infinity as the rest of the world spins. Conditions soon take a treacherous turn on "Killcord Pts I-III" -- a 12 minute odyssey that battens down the hatches as these sailors eye merciless waves and blinding ocean spray, jointly channeling Berlin-school electronics and sea legs. In the aftermath, the waterlogged bleeps of "Idle" survey the damage as our parched crew sound the distress signal and ultimately descend into delirium. Known for navigating individual courses as solo musicians, Wilson and Tanner's collective storytelling is saturated in detail, buoying between tension and harmony. II modestly stands as some of both artists' most accomplished material. Includes download.

PESTANG & PIERRE HENRY, LUC Saint-Exupery LP
Fantôme Phonographique present a reissue of Luc Pestang and Pierre Henry's Saint-Exupéry, originally released as a 10" in 1959. During his long and illustrious career, the French composer and musique concrète pioneer Pierre Henry created a large amount of incidental music to accompany literary texts, both on record and for the stage, from Jules Verne to Victor Hugo, from Lautréamont to Antonin Artaud. This incredibly rare LP from 1959 is a radio play about the life of French pilot and writer Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, based on the 1956 book by Luc Estang on the subject. The interpreters are a small theater troupe including French actor Paul Meurisse (1912-1979), famous for popular films and as a member of national theater company, La Comédie Française. Underlying key scenes, Pierre Henry's contribution to the play consists of electronic and musique concrète sounds, adding a contemporary dimension to the text. A beautiful piece from one of the mid-20th century's truly brilliant sonic explorers.

DERBYSHIRE, DELIA The Dreams LP
Delia Derbyshire is one of the most innovative electronic musicians of the 20th century. She is best known for her pioneering work for the BBC Radiophonic Workshop, and for composing the classic theme song for the original Doctor Who, believed to be the earliest "electronic" theme song in television history. A brilliant composer and one of the few women operating in the early era of electronic music. In the early '60s, she collaborated with the British artist and playwright Barry Bermange for the BBC's Third Programme to produce four "Inventions for Radio", a collage of people describing their dreams, set to a background of electronic sound. This is the first, simply titled The Dreams, an attempt to represent, in sound, the sensation of dreaming. Derbyshire's electronic and musique concrete sound bed is the perfect underscore to the narration, simultaneously jarring, dissonant, and terrifying. An amazing piece of work from one of the legendary pioneers of electronic music.

VALLE, MARCOS Sempre CD
The original Rio beach boy returns in style, with a new record of unabashedly feel-good Brazilian party music. Featuring Azymuth bassist Alex Malheiros, a horn section including Valle's go-to high-trumpeter Jesse Sadoc, and percussion master Armando Marcal, Sempre has all the masterful composition, exceptional musicality, and forward-thinking ideas you'd expect from the Brazilian titan. Updating Marcos Valle's seminal boogie-era sound, Sempre spans ecstatic disco, cosmic samba, and late-night jazz-funk, drawing obvious comparisons to some of Valle's late-seventies and early-eighties output. But lyrically the new album is more closely reminiscent of Valle's progressive early '70s releases. Heralding love, tolerance, and living in the present, while satirizing political corruption, Sempre recalls a time in which Valle, together with his brother Paulo Sergio, was writing subtly subversive lyrics in order to bypass the censorship imposed by the military dictatorship, which ruled over Brazil between 1964 and 1985. The album marries compositional genius with pure pop perfection. From the blistering brass arrangements on up-tempo disco hit "Olha Quem Tá Chegando" and the infinitely classy "Vou Amanhã Saber", to the nine-minute synth heavy instrumental funk stepper "Odisséia", which gradually morphs into an interplanetary samba jam, the songs are tightened and given an extra coat of gloss by London based producer Daniel Maunick. More moments of boogie delight come in the form of "Minha Roma" and the sunshine anthem title-track. Translating as "Ever", Sempre is a testament to the continual drive for development and reinvention that has defined Marcos Valle's astounding six-decade career. Ever changing, ever moving forward, he began as one of the second-wave of early bossa nova composers in the '60s, writing the world famous bossa standard "Summer Samba (So Nice)" for his sophomore album Samba 68. After a brief stint in the States, Valle returned to Brazil, and the early '70s saw the release of four ground-breaking Valle albums. These albums would see Valle work alongside a number of hugely influential Brazilian bands, including Milton Nascimento's backing band Som Imaginaro, the prog-rock band O Terco, and jazz funk legends Azymuth. Returning back to the US in '75, Valle resided in LA, writing music for the likes of Eumir Deodato, Airto Moreira, Chicago, Sarah Vaughn, and Leon Ware, before returning to Brazil once more. Since the mid-nineties, Valle has been experiencing a renaissance with Far Out Recordings. Sempre is his fifth album for the label, following 2010's critically acclaimed Estatica (FARO 153CD).

COTONETE & DI MELO Atemporal CD
Born in 1949 in Recife (Brazil), Roberto De Melo Santos, despite a very light discography, is among the true icons of the Brazilian soul music under his artist alias, Di Melo. He's indeed only needed an eponymous album, released in 1975 on Odeon, to assert himself as a star in his native country, but also as a legend for all collectors and connoisseurs of the world. More than 40 years after its release, this famous album sells for several hundred euros in its original version, and even for the few reissues that were offered. Not very active since then, Di Melo however returned in 2016 with the album O Imorrível, released on the Brazilian label Casona Produções. It is then that a year later, came a meeting with the French group Cotonete. Florian Pellissier, founding member and keyboard within the band, tells the story: "On tour in Brazil with Cotonete, we had a few days off in Sao Paulo and I really hoped to make a collaboration with an important artist or band from the Brazilian funk scene. We had thought of Marcos Valle, Meta Meta, or Ed Motta ... but Rafaela Prestes our Brazilian 'sound ingineer/genius' told me she'd worked with Di Melo for his recent comeback and gave me his number. No sooner said than done, as I'm a huge fan of Di Melo. The next day he arrived at our house with Jo, his wife, and Gabi, his daughter. He takes the guitar in front of us and gives us a private show of three hours. We cried the tears of joy. He had 400 original songs never recorded, a gold mine. On the same night, we started working the arrangements for two days, followed by a rehearsal and two small gigs in Sao Paulo. Immediately after, we recorded in the magical Epsilon B studio. This album is the summary of this moment, of these five days of madness spent together between 'the best band in the world' and the legend Roberto Di Melo -- Simple, beautiful, Brazilian-French, human music..." Atemporal found its final version in collaboration with Favorite Recordings and is presented as the genuine long-awaited follow-up to the classic Di Melo LPs.

ALDORANDE Aldorande CD
Ready for an adventure running parallel to their lives in common units, the quartet Aldorande boarded a starship to set off on an astral expedition. The mission began perfectly, according to plan. From the very first measures, the travelers were released from the Earth's gravity. Very quickly, their home planet appeared tiny and distant, before disappearing completely. Comets and novae lit the way through the fathomless depths of interstellar space. Their preliminary, in-depth studies of '70s jazz-funk were a great source of inspiration. Very early on, they knew that this sonic aesthetic would allow them to travel even farther, navigating only with organic instruments and no digital backing or enhancements. Commander Virgile Raffaëlli's bass lines guided their journey, offering a calm, yet vibrant foundation for the smoother phases and turning up the power to bring them through turbulence and meteor showers safe and sound. Like a compass, the bass indicated the direction and traced a groove that the loyal, valued crew could follow as their travels continued. Mathieu Edouard's drums solidly locked down the rhythm to avoid any sudden jolts, working in tandem with Erwan Loeffel's jet-propelled percussion. On the keyboards, Florian Pellissier drew harmonies and riffs from the synthesizers and electric pianos to oil the machinery and lighten the load when the ensemble needed to rise a few feet. The crew's almost telepathic cohesion was key to their success, allowing them to express interior emotions with just a few notes. Here is the last transmission we received: We have landed on an unknown planet and are depressurizing the airlock with help from subtle horns and ethereal choruses so we can discover the new horizon. It definitely meets our expectations! The desert before us holds the promise of new life. The warm yet fresh air is easy to breathe. A vague psychedelic scent floats through the atmosphere, as if ready to spring from the first flower to bloom. Dreamlike, mysterious, enigmatic yet familiar, we will call it Aldorande.

Voilaaa is one of the many projects led and produced by Bruno "Patchworks" Hovart. Voilaaa now presents a new four-track EP, which will be followed later in 2019 by a new LP. Another killer package where Patchworks teams up again with longtime partner Pat Kalla, but also with newcomers to the project, like here Ramatou Traore and Ayuune Sule, both bringing great African languages vocals to "Tu Mens Devant Moi" and "Woman Can Do".

CAMARAO ORKESTRA Nacao Africa 12"
"Nação África" is the new single by Camarão Orkestra, the most Brazilian of Parisian bands. Sinewy bass and percussion pulsating, with a variety of keyboards and synthesizers surrounded by the burning riffs of the brass section and Amanda Roldand's refreshing vocals. Anywhere close to a good record, you'd usually find Patchworks hanging around. He satiates here his compulsive remix addiction, first by loosening the pressure of the bass, and covering the mix with airy synth patches. Then with a dub version where he puts vocals and instruments inside echo chambers and effects corridors of different scales.

ELKHORN Sun Cycle / Elk Jam 2LP
"Two mind-bending slabs of acoustic and electric guitars, wandering into corners of acid-logic only accessible to bravest explorers. Elkhorn is a duo -- Jesse Sheppard and Drew Gardner -- from NYC. Their earlier records (Elkhorn on Beyond Is Beyond, The Black River on Debacle) would have blown us away, even if we didn't know Jesse from his work as a film-maker (he directed the Glenn Jones/Jack Rose doc, The Things That We Used to Do) and organizer (he put together the 1,000 Incarnations of the Rose festival). Elkhorn's music, which we had suspected might be in a fairly traditional American Primitive vein, was anything but. And these two LPs (released individually, but recorded more or less simultaneously) explore a whole warren of new style caverns. Sun Cycle was recorded at Jason Meagher's Black Dirt Studio and is closer to their pure duo sound (although guitarist Willie Lane and percussionist Ryan Jewell are along for the ride). There are elements of the American Primitive thread present, but these touch mostly on the outer reaches of the form, like Gene Estibou & Jean-Claude Pickens' Intensifications, or the crazy distentions of MV and PG Six. Layers of pluck and soar and light percussion mix at the upper edge of the cosmic barrier, and Sun Cycle is, to our ears, Elkhorn's most adventurous and fully realized album yet. On Elk Jam (FTR 425CD-LP), Willie Lane and Ryan Jewell function more as members of a psychedelic folk-rock quartet, and the troupe takes things even deeper in a Bay Area-styled trip zone. Recalling the classic ruminations of Mountain Bus, the full four man Elkhorn is exactly what the doctor prescribed for a generation of sack-butts who imagine John Mayer's pudgy phallus-riffs have shit to do with transcendental psych exploration. Elkhorn are the true sonic dealio. Instrumental music doesn't get much better than this. As Capt. Beefheart once said, 'If you got ears/You gotta listen!' We couldn't agree more." --Byron Coley, 2019 Edition of 500; gatefold sleeve.

JOYNES & THE FURLONG BRAY, C The Borametz Tree LP
"Feeding Tube is pleased to be able to offer the first domestic release, helmed by the superb British guitarist, Chris Joynes. For this album, Joynes has assembled a polyglot ensemble comprised of folks from Dead Rat Orchestra (a splendidly bizarre experimental völk outfit), guitarist Nick Jonah Davids (with whom Joynes recently did a split LP of solo electric guitar improvs) and Cam Deas, who records both as a sound artist and as an acoustic guitarist. The music they have created for The Bormatez Tree (itself a semi-mythical tree found largely in travellers' tales of the 1500s) is a difficult to describe hybrid of approaches and techniques, drawn from the vast collective imagination of the group. From swirls of North African string design, accompanied by dream-time percussion, to banjo/fiddle duets redolent of documentaries about the American Civil War, to flowing free form jams where everyone piles on psychedelic licks. The all-instrumental unit sound ranges all over the place, but after sinking in its warm tomes for a while, I am most put in mind of some of the guitar-led UK post-units of the '70s (Fairport, Trees, Pentangle, et al) playing loose and free at some nameless pub at the edge of peat bog, just letting things go in whatever direction the winds blew them. It's not all like that, of course. But in the main, the scent of Scotch, smoke and adventure is hard to ignore." --Byron Coley, 2019 Edition of 500.

MOZZALEUM Dark Ride LP
"The debut album by Western Mass trio, Mozzaleum, is an unholy union of hot cheese pie, cool Italian prog, and wanton horror movie lust. One gets the feeling this's the sort of band that Roky Erickson dreams about after a few mugs of cocoa and a slasher flick watch-a-thon. The three tracks on the first side all take their names from actual films (none related to the films' music as far as I can tell), the five on the flip carry on in a more thematic manner. But the music on side two -- keys, samples, effects, and Pinto's amplified bowed-saw -- are more in line with the band's extremely visual live shows. With two lauded visual artists in the group ('Condread' Capistran and 'Terrorica' Pinto) that's to be expected. 'A Damned' Parker is the third member, and a 'recording virgin' (as in Pinto). Capistran is a seasoned vet of such units as Sunburned, Tarp, Galacto Fidelity Unit and so on. There is also a 'ghost' fourth member in 'Germz' Pisani (aka Red Favorite), whose post production touches give Dark Ride the bizarre quality it maintains throughout, Mozzaleum's visual presence is so fucking strange it's easy to get hung up on when seeing them play. But on record, you get to appreciate their sheer sonic attack, and it's just amazing. Cinematic in all the cheesiest ways imaginable, the collage of elements manages to transcend any kind of ironic zone you might suspect it would inhabit, existing as a full throated and truly original roar. I can't wait until some smart film directors hear this shit, start having personal visions of carnage and enlist this troupe to do some actual soundtrack work. Get ahead of the curve. Shoot a movie in your own brain today. Call it Dark Ride." --Byron Coley, 2019 Pressed on cloudy orange/clear vinyl; edition of 200.

ALLRED, JOSEPH O Meadowlark LP
"Currently based in the Boston area, Joseph Allred was one of the players we first encountered at 2018's Ten Thousand Incarnations of the Rose festival in Takoma Park MD. Allred's playing had some Basho-esque sequencing that was highly engaging, and the rest of the set was a killer, off-center swathe of string quiver we could not resist. O Meadowlark is Allred's third solo vinyl (there are cassettes as well), and will surely please many heads. Here're Joseph's words on how the album came together. 'I recorded this stuff at the end of last year all in one night without really intending anything in particular with it. After I sat and listened back to it a narrative came together really quickly and I reflected that in the song titles. Poor Faulkner is a name I released music under for the first recordings I made several years ago, but he's since become a character I sometimes tell stories about in my music, or sometimes I assume his perspective and play songs from there. He's a very lonely middle-aged man who lives in a house in a remote part of Tennessee. He thinks the house is haunted, and the ghosts he sees range from the ghost of a kitten to a woman's ghost that his grandfather brought back from WWII. O Meadowlark tells a story about him, partially from an outside perspective and partially from his perspective. He hears a bird and follows it into the woods, where he finds a cabin and is visited by an angel. He stays the night at the cabin, and struggles to understand what the angel is trying to convey to him. The next day the angel reappears and eventually takes him to a celestial place where he's shown a vision. The album ends with his ascent, but doesn't include the vision. I think that's part of something new I'm working on at the moment.' Using guitars and banjos the way they were meant to be used, Allred's narrative unfolds like a strange movie just for you. Dig it now." --Byron Coley, 2019 Edition of 300.

PLANTS OF THE BIBLE Plants of the Bible CD
"Here is the first physically graspable music available by this mysterious Western Massachusetts duo, whose sound has been called 'Synthetic ASMR love balladry,' by more than one canny listener. Asking them to describe themselves, we received this missive: 'Plants of the Bible started in a bedroom in Florence with a tape machine and a poem about an unkillable dog android before it quickly spiraled out of control into a real band with a real record. Their first album is a dreamy cast of imagined characters and everyday events built with elaborately layered sounds. Driven by their array of cheap keyboards and a wide range of influences from La Boheme to Fabio Frizzi to Justin Bieber, their music is deceptively inviting and playfully disorienting. They are currently working on an EP of hot songs and researching a more long-term project about the history of lesbian porn.' Not sure what more we can add, except that, according to inter-web sources, there are more than 120 plants mentioned in the Bible, ranging from 'Abraham's Bush' to 'Wormwood.' If you need more information consult a priest of some sort. If you need be confused in a way that involves wonderfully deep hooks, get this album instead. Go ahead, all will be forgiven. MONTI, MARIA Il Bestiario LP
2019 black vinyl repress, new lower pricing. Holidays Records present a reissue of Maria Monti's Il Bestiario, originally released in 1974. Maria Monti's legendary Il Bestiario is a prime example of the avant-garde art-song of the 1970s. Known for her renderings of Italian popular songs, Maria Monti is an Italian singer and actress with a noteworthy career: cabaret singer in the '60s, ambitious avant-garde folk artist in the '70s, and starring in films by directors as such as Sergio Leone -- Fistful Of Dynamite (1971) -- and Bernardo Bertolucci -- 1900 (1976). Il Bestiario is a near perfect emblem of the fascinating territory gained through collaboration. It enlisted the radical poet Aldo Braibanti as its lyricist, features arrangements and synthesizer from Alvin Curran (Musica Elettronica Viva), the baritone saxophone of Roberto Laneri (Prima Materia), as well as the soprano saxophone of jazz legend Steve Lacy. The result is absolutely stunning, musically unique within the respective outputs of its participants' long and noted careers. Unquestionably one of the most beautiful and neglected albums of its decade. Comes with a 16-page booklet with lyrics and translations.

VA La Torre Ibiza Volumen Tres 2LP
Double LP version. 180 gram vinyl; gatefold sleeve. A secluded gem in Ibiza's now commercial landscape, La Torre is located in Cap Negret, within the picturesque countryside of San Antonio. Picturesque views of the magical Mediterranean sunset intertwine with true Balearic melodies, where like-minded strangers connect with bygone friends. Volumen Tres of La Torre Ibiza is compiled by long term friends Pete Gooding and Mark Barrott. Veterans within the Ibizan landscape, the concept behind the compilation is to reflect the true beginnings of the island's heritage. Old records merge with new boundary pushing productions, but all in-keeping with the theme of the true Balearic soundscape. The compilation begins with "Alsema Dub". The product of Bill Laswell & Jah Wobble's liquid bass ethnicity, a cooing vocal is complimented by the pulse of trumpets as an ethereal synth runs in the background. Berlin based Neapolitan duo Nu Guinea create "'A Voce 'E Napule", an exotic funk-driven number, whilst Canadian native Pacific Coliseum creates the tropical, emotive "Morning at Made's". American alt country icons Lambchop provide a feel-good yet bittersweet anthem in "Up With The People", before psychedelic Australians Tamam Shud create "Bali Waters", a masterpiece from the cult surf movie Morning of the Earth (1972). Downtempo talents Satoshi & Makoto produce the gently-moving "Crepuscule Leger", whilst Mac DeMarco's "On The Level" features soothing, left-of-center vocals and dream-like melodies. The late English punk impresario Malcolm McLaren takes you on an intricate, Asian-inspired journey with "Obatala", before Mark's re-imagination of the classic Tears For Fears track "Head Over Heels" ratchets up the drama and bliss with its widescreen vista. Trance's iconic "Ambiente", released in Germany in 1984, marries Eastern philosophy with Western electronics, before English hauntology talent The Advisory Circle forms a chillingly-beautiful masterpiece with "Sundial". American songwriter and composer Richard Torrance provides the groove-laden, percussion-filled "Anything's Possible", whilst Swing Out Sister's classic "After Hours" transports you into the twilight via its '80s jazz refrains. The penultimate track comes courtesy of Mark Barrott, who's "Mokuso" was inspired by his adventures in rural Japan and Tokyo by night, paving the way for the final selection: Colorama's "Coloured In Remix" of poet and author John Stammers's "Idle I'm".

KIRKEGAARD, JACOB Phonurgia Metallis CD
The sound art of Jacob Kirkegaard explores ways to reflect on immediate complex, unnoticed or unapproachable aspects of the human condition or civilization. His works have treated themes such as radioactivity in Chernobyl and Fukushima, melting ice in the Arctic, border walls in Palestine, and tones -- otoacoustic emissions -- generated from the actual human ear. Currently, Jacob Kirkegaard works on two projects, one is on the sound of global waste and waste management. The other on sound environments related to the immediate human post mortem. With his peculiar alchemist approach and extensive research, complex phenomena and current conditions are portrayed through composition, installation, video. and photography. Rather than providing answers, his portrayals create spaces for reflection. Kirkegaard has presented his works at galleries, museums, biennales and concert spaces throughout the world. Edition of 300."One of contemporary sound art's most subtle, intriguing figures. More artistically minded than field recordings, more naturally hewn than noise tapes, Kirkegaard amplifies hidden worlds into evocative drifts." --Rolling Stone, December 2015

VA Digital Kabar: Electronic Maloya From La Reunion Since 1980 CD
Digital Kabar: Electronic Maloya From La Reunion Since 1980 is a compilation of electronic music from Reunion, an island in the Indian Ocean. Combining tropical sounds, sunny moods, and créole dialect, Digital Kabar features mostly unknown artists from the island. It is the perfect summer-opening compilation for both rare groove diggers and DJs in search of the best tropical beats. Formerly clandestine, today manifest, both sacred but also profane, sometimes meditated, very often improvised, the Kabar transpires in the daily life on Reunion, getting rid with insolence of any label that dares to try to impose itself. The Kabar is a fleeting but bubbling manifestation of an identity and a local culture that is still difficult to define. A moment of life and sharing where handcrafted instruments, neighborhood meetings, ritual dances and lyrical demands are mixed, a meeting. Born from the musical union of maloya and electronic music, Digital Kabar is a compilation at the crossroads of cultures, porous to all sound experiences. It's also the result of a friendship resulting from InFiné heading to the Les Electropicales festival, the fascination of a small team dedicated to the independent musical cause of a musical scene and its diversity. A musical electronic snapshot from an exotic and unknown part of the globe, half of the tracks on the compilation have never been officially released. Features: Patrick Manent, Boogzbrown, Loya, Jako Maron, Sheitan Brothers, Ti Fock, Boogzbrown & Cubenx, Force Indigène & Jako Maron, Agnesca, Zong, Labelle, Psychorigid, Salem Tradition, J-ZeuS, and Kwalud.

SORRY FOR LAUGHING Sorry For Laughing CD
"The Sorry For Laughing album was released in 1986 on cassette only. It is a project by Gordon H. Whitlow who is also a member of legendary US avantgarde collective Biota, formerly Mnemonists. Whitlow composed and recorded the album all by himself. The accompanying artwork for the original cassette release was made by several members of Mnemonists, the visual department of Biota. Sorry For Laughing has a different sound though. It is more varied, there are elements of post punk as well as elements of contemporary classical music. Somehow though you can hear Biota in there as well. Les Disques du Crepuscule is in the air. After all, the idea was to make a Christmas album. Whitlow says that when he lived in Colorado and worked in a bakery a homeless drifter used to come to the shop and buy the same stuff every day. With Christmas approaching, he interviewed the guy and got his Biota mates involved. Piano parts were recorded at a wealthy house-sit in Denver, others at Mulberry Street Studio, home of Biota's Bill Sharp who also co-produced the album. Gordon Whitlow says about it: 'This is a solo musical project recorded in the winter of 1985-86 and self-released on cassette in a very small edition in 1986; this was followed by a modest limited-edition cassette release on the ADN label in Italy in 1989. It has never been released to the public on any medium other than cassette. The compositions stem from my beginning days with the avant-garde recording ensemble Biota, shortly after completion of the Bellowing Room LP. The recordings feature a handful of Biota players contributing to compositions that fall outside the group's activities. It is a collection of instrumentals whose moods and atmosphere are founded on largely repetitive melodic passages accompanied by 'found' atonal elements. It is intended to be minimalistic with sparse arrangement (and on one track, some distant vocalization), aiming for a sense of nostalgia, isolation/loneliness, and childlike muse."

HULA Voice CD
"Hula were founded in Sheffield in 1981. Three members (Mark Albrow, Alan Fish and Ron Wright) lived with Stephen Mallinder (Cabaret Voltaire) and Paul Widger (They must be Russians, Clock DVA, The Box) in a villa called Hula Kula. After trying the bass players Alan Watt and Chris Brain (Tense, NOS) Hula recorded the impressive debut album Cut From Inside with Mark Brydon (Chakk, Moloko). Ingredients like cut-ups, steady rhythms, and paranoia vocals were blended together into a unique white funky sound. Murmur was the band's second album and it came out on Red Rhino in 1984. This was also the time of Hula's great singles -- 'Fever Car', 'Get the Habit' and 'Walk on Stalks of Shattered Glass' were all released around that time. These two long players were followed by an ambient album called Shadowland and a live double LP entitled 1000 Hours. Voice was to be the band's last album and came out on Red Rhino in 1987. It is a much bigger and cleaner production than its predecessors and was produced and engineered by the creme de la creme of its time: Daniel Miller, Robert Gordon, John Fryer, Paul Kendall and others. Two singles were lifted off the album, 'Cut Me Loose' and 'Poison', both perfect examples of electronic industrial pop. A year earlier, another 12" was released entitled Freeze Out, it is also included in this first time on CD re-issue. After the album, Hula recorded one more 12" for Wax Trax and then fell silent. Let's hope for new Hula material to come out in the near future."

FRITH, FRED Woodwork/Live At Ateliers Claus CD
"Fred Frith is one of the most important musicians of our time. He was born in Sussex, UK and now lives in California, USA. He first came to attention as one of the founding members of the English avant-rock group Henry Cow. He was and is also a member of groups like Massacre, Art Bears, Skeleton Crew or Cosa Brava. Over the past 40 years Fred has collaborated with outstanding musicians like John Zorn, Tom Cora, Bill Laswell, Carla Kihlstedt, Henry Kaiser, Phil Minton, Brian Eno, The Residents, Marc Ribot, Lol Coxhill, Ikue Mori, Zeena Parkins, Derek Bailey, Anthony Braxton, Evan Parker, John Butcher, Laurie Anderson -- the list could go on much longer. In 1974 Fred Frith released his landmark album Guitar Solos, a glimpse into what he had been doing with his guitar. It was improvised and recorded within four days and presented an experimental and innovative way of playing the instrument. Frith relocated to New York and quickly became part of the downtown avantgarde scene, something he found very liberating as he could be himself instead of living up to what other people were expecting of him. Fred also started composing music for film, dance and theatre. After a few years in Stuttgart, Germany, Frith went back to the States where he is now professor of composition. Back in 1982 Recommended Records Japan released a live LP of solo guitar improvisations. Now, in 2019 we are proud to present you a new solo guitar album, recorded live in concert in Brussels as part of a European tour. You can hear how Fred's playing has develped in those nearly 40 years, and as usual, this album was engineered by long-time collaborator Myles Boisen."

EARTHEN SEA Grass And Trees LP
LP version. "Jacob Long's reductionist rhythmic ambient vessel, Earthen Sea, ebbs towards a more purely elemental state on his second excursion for Kranky, Grass And Trees. He describes the creative process as one of 'simplifying things as much as possible,' designing uncluttered spaces traced in nothing but breath, field recordings, and 'sounds that could be played by hand but weren't.' The results feel decentralized but dynamic, low-lit evocations of ambiguous nocturnal environments -- dub techno disassembled into stray pulses and spare parts. It's a music both interior and infinite, languorous yet transformative, made in the outer boroughs of a metropolis but existing in its own liminal wilderness. Long's vision is a grounding one, rooted in the physical body but attuned to larger currents: 'In response to living in a fairly hectic city, and at a very hectic time for the world at large, creating something more drawn back and restrained felt appropriate.'"

FARRAGO Neontrance EP 12"
Sam Deliaert alias Farrago rekindles the flame with the high-beam pulse of Neontrance. Melding a heavy-duty four-to-the-floor with well-timed breaks and fluttering, bleepy melodies, the "pure emotion" of "Neontrance" makes for the central pivot around which the other tracks revolve and articulate. The EP opens with the stomping and churning "Sinner". Pulling out the trenchant katana samples, spiraling bass and weird mouth noises, the minimalistic "No Jutsu" is one to crank up the heat effortlessly. Completing the picture, the original version of "Risin" echoes Kobosil's anthemic revamp from 2018: a bouncy joyride in acidic marshes and hallucinogenic landscapes.

KRIEGEL & SPECTRUM, VOLKER Mild Maniac 2LP
"The ingredients of a Kriegel style jazz rock are as simple as they are complex: an often pumping rock bass, whose stoic groove Eberhard Weber leaves behind in wide arcs on his corpus-less electro contrabass, and a drum set drumming crisply dry to the beat by Joe Nay, which is put under tension time and again by Peter Giger's shimmering percussions. Rainer Brüninghaus's flat-oscillating chord playing on the e-piano, which he breaks open with long, eloquently phrased garlands, and Kriegel's wide, slightly distorted legato bows on the semi-acoustic guitar. This is Kriegel's creative cosmos, so he sounds: The rudeness of rock and the suppleness of jazz go hand in hand with the melancholy of blues and the emotionality of soul. The five bonus tracks following the six Mild Maniac tracks on the original album are interesting for the re-release of this Kriegel recording, which has often been praised as a legendary recording. Kriegel played the last four numbers with his Mild Maniac Orchestra at the 1977 Schlossfestspiele in Idstein. But only in the last title, in Kriegel's long 'Schnellhörspiel', is the whole band with all the musical set pieces described above present."

ONETE, DONA Rebujo CD
On the eve of her 80th birthday, Dona Onete, the grande dame of Amazonian song, returns with her third album Rebujo, a love letter to her hometown of Belém, situated deep in the Amazon. Rebujo brims with two music styles born in Belém: carimbós, influenced by African grooves, and bangues, a ska-type rhythm. Plus, there's a cumbia, brega ("romantic" music) and samba. Since the release of her 2017 album Banzeiro (MAIS 034CD/LP), Onete has become a superstar in Brazil -- she composed and sung the theme song for one of Brazil's biggest soap operas (A Força do Querer), been awarded the Brazilian Ordem do Mérito Cultural in recognition for her contribution to Brazilian culture, and her video for "No Meio do Pitiu" has an impressive 9.2 million views on YouTube. Outside of Brazil Onete has performed at Roskilde, Womad (UK, New Zealand, and Australia), Gilles Peterson's Worldwide Festival, and TFF Rudolstadt, and she is a global spokesperson for indigenous cultures. RIYL: Soundway Records, Analog Africa, Calypso Rose, Oumou Sangare. Mastered at the Carvery. BASTIEN, PIERRE Tinkle Twang 'n Tootle LP
"Pierre Bastien orchestrates his meccano marionettes on Tinkle Twang 'n Tootle to form the charming imaginative ensemble that he's been known for since the late '80s. Equal parts composer, inventor, mechanic, and performer -- Bastien translates his imagination into instruments and compositions that defy any musical categories. Whether it's preparing instruments like playing a trumpet underwater or through a kazoo, using belt-driven motors and mechanical components to perform cumbersome yet surprisingly musical operations on traditional instruments and household items, or using a fan to hit the strings of a kundi harp with flowing paper -- Bastien's love for tone, rhythm, noise and harmony is poetically reflected across his quite extensive oeuvre. Playful and melancholic, the sound sculptures that Bastien invents and plays with are partly inspired by the work of Raymond Roussel, a visionary French author who at the turn of the 20th century wrote a unique form of literature which inspired and guided artists from the surrealist and pataphysical movement and was declared by Michel Foucault as one of structuralism's founding fathers. On that note, the influence of literature and syntax on Bastien's work cuts all the way through to the palindromes he uses for his track titles - which, much like his machines, infinitely loop. True to its adorable title, Tinkle Twang 'n Tootle is a music box of unfolding whimsical structures, half broken rhythms, detuned harmonies, and fantastical sound collages that evoke a childlike sense of wonder and an urge to explore the spaces in between the sounds."

GOTTSCHING, MANUEL Dream & Desire CD
MG.ART presents a reissue of Manuel Gottsching's Dream & Desire, originally released in 1977. For 2019, this is a newly remastered and carefully re-edited version of the legendary 1977 studio recording for RIAS Berlin."The 1970s. The Vietnam War is slowly coming to an end; the RAF thrives and prospers; the first Achtundsechziger ('68 protestors) are actually planning to march through the institutions; rock and roll is getting heavier; and hardly noticed by the mainstream public, some West-Berlin musicians develop a world of sound, which later eventually became labelled as "Electronic Music". These compositions of slowly evolving soundscapes relating to the Minimal Music concept created a meditative mood. This was new; this was the Berliner Schule (Berlin school). Manuel was living right on the Ku-Damm (Kurfürstendamm), right in the city center, but in the rear building, shielded from the noise. Manu didn't have a sequencer. Everything that sounded like a sequencer was his highly focused guitar work. The slowly changing tone sequences for example; this was a physical accomplishment in itself. The musicians from Berlin, who worked in the same genre, were either friends, periodically played in Manuel's Ash Ra Tempel, or built up their own careers. The scene was small, but equipped with illustrious celebrities: Klaus Schulze, Tangerine Dream, Harald Grosskopf, and Agitation Free. Manuel was able to start his international career pretty quickly, focusing on England, France and Japan. For the German middle-of-the-road-consciousness, these countries were as exotic as the winds on Jupiter, especially Japan, where Göttsching still enjoys superstar status. The RIAS studio had an old Farfisa compact organ that Manuel played and of which I was especially proud; it can be heard prominently here. Originally, the two tracks had been conceived for my one-hour radio feature at RIAS Berlin in summer 1977. Then, although being broadcast only once in Berlin and Belgium, they soon became cult amongst listeners, who taped, multiplied and distributed the tracks throughout Manuel's fan base. The revival of Dream & Desire is not nostalgia but an indication that the present will only be appreciated after acknowledging the past. The bonus track "Despair" was not part of the original radio-feature, but was composed and recorded around the same time in 1977, and fits perfectly in style and sound. Manuel's music has been with me for now almost 50 years. Dream & Desire is beautiful -- what more can I say." --Olaf Leitner, March 2019

CATNAPP Break CD
The time has come for Catnapp's debut full-length record on Monkeytown Records, Break. Break follows 2018's EP Fear and No Cover single and sees Catnapp capturing the jaw-dropping energy of her live shows as well as further refining her characteristic blend of rap and heavyweight electronic beats. She challenged herself with exploring more complex emotions and subjects for this album, which is more than a collection of love songs. Catnapp is the guise of Argentinian artist Amparo Battaglia. Long before signing to Monkeytown in 2018, the Berlin-based producer, singer/rapper, and striking performer already (self-)released a couple of records full of boundless creativity and originality, taking whatever she needed from every electronic genre as well as pop and rap music. Amparo cites classic influences like The Prodigy, Aphex Twin, OutKast, or Beyoncé, while her productions also draw from current post-internet and post-rap sounds. Break combines these diverse influences in a very distinct sound. "Down In The Basement" is an ode to the underground, dealing with how to grow as an artist whilst staying true to your roots. Catnapp tackles the beautiful contradictions of going her own way. Next up is "The Mover" featuring Modeselektor, a slow burning, bass-heavy song about standing up for yourself and showing strength. "Fight For A Fight" is inspired by the repression the LGBTQ community is facing all around the world. It came about when Amparo was invited to perform at the Pride March in Buenos Aires in 2018, its lyrics are aimed at supporting the ongoing fight against patriarchy. Still, love and heartbreak are essential elements of Catnapp's songwriting and thus appear in songs like "Thunder", "Lengua", and "Give It Back". The latter is about leaving a toxic relationship behind and regaining control about one's life. Musically, these tracks show Catnapp alternating fierce raps and booming beats with liquid R&B vocals and melancholic, dreamlike electronica. Catnapp has been compared to electroclash artists like Peaches, her blend of modern rap and electronics may also evoke likeminded artist Tommy Genesis. There's leaders and there's followers -- you already know which this girl belongs to. Break is no less than her most accomplished musical statement to date. Also features El Plvybxy and Doxxed.

HALEIWA Cloud Formations CD
Mikko Singh has been living different musical lives from the start. With Cloud Formations, his third album under the Haleiwa moniker, Singh eschews the guitar-dominated sound of his first two LPs for lush but grainy textures. Inspired by bands and songwriters like Animal Collective, Real Estate, and the late Jay Reatard, Cloud Formations is a hopeful record whose experimental approach to rock music calls to mind the experimental pop of Morr Music label mates like Sequoyah Tiger or even Stereolab's motorik-driven post-rock. It's a fusion of fuzzed-out sounds, washed-out sentiments and far-out songwriting -- perhaps the only shoegaze record you can actually take along to the beach. Ever since he first picked up the classical guitar at age nine, Singh has pursued many different ambitions. Having moved on from skate punk and hardcore bands to instrumental indie rock, Singh even released an album of subtle piano compositions on the 1631 label alongside artists like Dustin O'Halloran and Hauschka. As an album dedicated to new beginnings, Cloud Formations proves to be the perfect synthesis for all of these ambitions. 0After the release 2015's Palm Trees of the Subarctic, Singh began experimenting with his collection of vintage and analog synthesizers, exploring different ways of using the guitar and putting an emphasis on his bass playing when composing. While some of the songs on Cloud Formations were initially conceived in 2015, he recorded and produced the album between 2017 and 2018 in what he calls a "long and continuous process". Apart from some drum recordings (provided by his long-time friend Johan Nordlund of the Swedish hardcore band This Gift Is A Curse), Singh maintained full creative control of the album, tweaking the nine songs in his own Stockholm studio. He paid more attention than before to the subtleties of sound design and their emotive qualities; the result is a dense, at times psychedelic and intimate album, abundant with passion and optimism, despite its name, which may at first indicate the opposite. Singh wants to express hope on Cloud Formations, an approach that becomes tangible from the very first seconds of the anthemic opener "HKI -97". Between the fuzzy ambience of "Ka'a'awa Surfin'", the title track's hypnagogic mid-tempo grooves, to the relentless drive of "Swell" or "Crossroads", and the eerie final track "Cold Concrete", this album is to be understood as a celebration of different musical lives becoming one.

COIL Theme From The Gay Man's Guide To Safer Sex LP
LP version. Purple vinyl. Musique Pour La Danse present Coil's unreleased soundtrack for the VHS only, pre-internet, sexual education documentary entitled The Gay Man's Guide To Safer Sex released in 1992. Members for this project were John Balance, Peter "Sleazy" Christopherson, and Danny Hyde. The OST, to quote John Balance's interview for Compulsion Online, "is [a] slightly new age-y, progressive house type thing". Another way to approach it is as a delightful collection of Balearic beats, smoking jazz not far removed from Badalamenti's work with David Lynch, somewhat of an ambient house album for your home listening and early morning sunrise dances, Coil style. Taken from the original masters provided by Danny Hyde, The Gay Man's Guide To Safer Sex features a new sexy edit of the main theme. Bonus tracks "Nasa-Arab" and "Omlagus Garfungiloops" are taken from the 1992 CD-only release Stolen And Contaminated Songs, both being original versions of the radically reworked (for the OST) "Nasa-Arab 2" and "Exploding Frogs" in order to balance the whole album and extend the listening pleasure.

RAMLEH The Great Unlearning 2LP
Ramleh return with The Great Unlearning: four rocking sides with downbeat electronic leanings making a complex and bold follow-up to 2015's Circular Time. Produced by Anthony Di Franco and Gary Mundy and also featuring Philip Best, Stuart Dennision, Sarah Fröelich, and Martyn Watts, The Great Unlearning represents the most complete artistic statement from this incarnation of Ramleh, and possibly of the band's entire career. With their new album, Ramleh map out a vast musical and psychological terrain which they use as a base to simultaneously critique, satirize and ultimately warn against the perilous limits of human megalomania. Recording sessions engineered by Danny Cross and Thom Ashworth. Audio mastering by James Plotkin. Artwork by Jonas Delaborde and Hendrik Hegray. A Broken Flag production for Nashazphone."... I don't know where we may be up to now but I'm fifteen, it's September 1984 and I've taken an absurdly oversized packaged Ramleh tape into school and the kids are laughing because there is a track called 'Fistfuck; and they are laughing harder and calling me mental when they have a 30 second blast of it on the Walkman. Or maybe it's summer 2011 and I'm having an interesting conversation with a Broken Flag recording artist in a field in Oxfordshire but have to leave him as I've promised to be part of a performance of Cornelius Cardew's 'The Great Learning' in ten minutes. On LP one, in the parallel dimension and the universe next door Hawkwind were even trippier and Throbbing Gristle were even darker than you remembered but sandwiched between them is insect terror music entitled 'The Twitch' with a pointed lyric directed at the modern horrors of social media. And then side three starts with a track that could have been taped off the John Peel show in, perhaps, 1979 and whose title I never knew but it turns out the title is 'No Music For These Times'. LP two delves further into the chaos of the 21st century planet and a song like 'Your Village Has Been Erased' is just as cheery as it sounds, and there is an even more shocking and distressing example of that insect terror music in 'Religious Attack' and it was funny to see the full and very unfriendly titles of the tracks from the mysterious advance Italian remix 12". Ramleh never ever give you what you think you want and as such they are one of the very few bands on the planet left in this state of true and always gorgeously sinister and malevolent independence . . . The nearest thing to the classic downer psych Ramleh sound is the beautiful elegiac closing track 'Natural Causes', yet the personal lyrics somehow contradict the state of the globe address that precedes them. FAIRLIGHT, EMILY Mother of Gloom LP
LP version. Emily Fairlight has a proper folk singer's background: a teenage runaway adventurer in Australia and India, a circus school student who once sang naked at a burlesque night on a whim, a female-friendly pornography-free sex toy shop assistant, a barista, and a runner/jack-of-all-trades at a digital visual effects company. With its New Zealand rural Gothic/Texas borderlands feel, Mother of Gloom is an elusive creature. Ultimately, the prevalence of acoustic guitar and intimate sharing of lived experience through song suggest it is folk music or, as Fairlight self-deprecatingly calls it, "doom-folk". Her vocal style -- a powerful quivering vibrato and a stark, haunting tone, teak-hard yet soft as crushed velvet -- elicits comparisons to PJ Harvey, Bridget St John, Emmylou Harris, and Cat Power, musicians with distinctive voices and a lyrical ability to conjure a kind of experiential realism, although Mother of Gloom can also hold its own alongside the storytelling of Will Oldham and soundscapes of Calexico. Each song is a timelessly elegant, at times distressed, vignette, capturing the essence of a place, memory or feeling, framed by a diverse musical palette with space for the imagination left between the sounds. Fairlight lives in Dunedin and has been composing and performing for over a decade. She recorded Mother of Gloom with Doug Walseth at The Cat's Eye Studio in Austin, Texas on her third trip to the USA, aided by local musicians including Cully Symington (Bright Eyes, Okkervil River) and multi-instrumentalist Kullen Fuchs.

KOKOLO 100 Fevers/Ciento Fiebres LP
Ray Lugo and Peace & Rhythm have teamed up again, this time to issue Kokolo Afrobeat Orchestra's fifth album, 100 Fevers/Ciento Fiebres. Ten dance-friendly cuts mashing up styles and moods. Afrobeat, Latin funk, cumbia, samba, disco, soukous, protest and party jams are the launch points, but as Kokolo fans have come to expect, there's a whole lot more heat in the grooves. As with previous Kokolo releases, Spanish and Portuguese vocals are in as much evidence as English. Special guests include Nigeria's Jo Jojo Kuo and Elani from Brazil. Every tune is danceable but has its own vibe from up to down tempo, protest to club culture, social justice to hedonism. Though not exactly a reunion album -- the band haven't stopped recording and touring together in one form another for the past 18 years -- bandleader Ray Lugo contends 100 Fevers is the best representation of what this Afrobeat orchestra has always been, an "eclectic mélange of influences that reflect what is going on within us as a band as well as in our lives at that particular moment" which "further expands Kokolo's search for the funkiest groove", a quest that Lugo hopes "never ends" but which he feels has benefitted by the band stepping back and "letting our sound 'breathe' a bit and return with a fresher outlook." Includes insert featuring an interview with Lugo, full credits, and lyrics.

S S S S Walls, Corridors, Baffles LP
Walls, Corridors, Baffles is the debut album of Swiss musician and producer Samuel Savenberg, aka S S S S. Following various releases on Haunter Records, aufnahme+wiedergabe, and Hallow Ground, his LP on Präsens Editionen tries to find an approach to an artistic expression beyond tropes of darkness, harshness, and excess. Thus, the aesthetic of Walls, Corridors, Baffles is radically and uncompromisingly sober. Instead of focusing on a conceptual or symbolic treatment of sound as an abstraction, Savenberg emphasizes its materiality. The album consists of eight pieces strung together into a manifesto which calls for a febrile embrace of an unheard-of, intense sobriety. In Walls, Corridors, Baffles, unadulterated percussive force meets an astoundingly precise and frugal vocabulary of electroacoustic sounds, as for example on the opener "Deserter". Passages extended over long melodies invite the listener to lose oneself in the contrastive emptiness. Central to the work are the affective qualities of the music which lapses only at moments into a more defined emotional quality -- as on the final track "Nothing But The Circulation Of Air". Edition of 300.

ELEPHANT9 Psychedelic Backfire I CD
Elephant9 was already established as a vital live favorite on the Norwegian scene -- due to a number of energetic and enthusiastically received concerts -- before their highly-acclaimed debut album Dodovoodoo was released in May 2008 (RCD 2075CD). 11 years later, and after another four studio albums, it was about time to properly document this live force in the form of not only one album, but two double albums. Indeed, the very limited, vinyl-only Live at the BBC album was released in 2011 (RLP 2118LP), but this time the band booked a four-day residency at the intimate Kampen Bistro in Oslo and invited old friend Reine Fiske -- a vital presence on previous albums Atlantis (RCD 2134CD/RLP 3134LP, 2012) and Silver Mountain (RCD 2174CD/RLP 3174LP, 2016) -- along for two of the evenings. Everything was recorded in front of enthusiastic crowds and later mixed by Christian Engfelt, another trusted collaborator. It's a rough warts-and-all mix, with no overdubs, repairs or edits. Tracks are picked from all their albums, often given lengthy workouts with room for improvisation. The trio is extremely tight and telepathic, with Ståle as the obvious soloist, but it's worth to mention the drummer for a change, Torstein being a powerhouse that truly shines on these recordings.

VA Funky Chicken: Belgian Grooves from the 70's (2019 Jewelcase) 2CD
2019 jewelcase; includes 32-page booklet. The best Belgian dance tracks from the beginning of the '70s. Dire times, they were, full of poverty and hardship. To make a living out of popular music was a near-impossibility in a small country like Belgium. This precarious situation, though, proved to be a blessing in disguise for creative minds. When it's hard to get your hands on some money, trying out as many things as you can seems the logical thing to do. On the other hand, if there's hardly any money to be gained anyway, you may just as well play what you bloody well like. That's what Belgians like to do anyway. Moreover, living in a country where virtually every musical wave passes through also inspires. In the early '70s, those waves were (Afro-)funk, soul, and Latin. The situation as a whole was a favorable one for some visionary musical entrepreneurs. Jean and Roland Kluger created a musical dynasty, American-style, with successful acts like Chakachas and Two Man Sound. Their rival, Marcel De Keukeleire, scored worldwide hits with Amadeo, Chocolat's, and "The Birdy Song." Relying on zealous energy and a shamelessly commercial logic, every effort was aimed at success, so they jumped on as many international bandwagons as they could and tried out their own variants on the local market. Nearly every style in the post-war scene is represented here: Hein Huysmans' jazz-funk, the jazzy prog-rock of Cos, or the fusion of Open Sky Unit. And of course there's Marc Moulin, a name that needs little or no introduction. This is the missing link between the variety orchestras of the '60s and the electronic triumphs of Telex in the late '70s and early '80s. These tracks offer the same sense of adventure and slightly surreal pigheadedness that are also present in the best Belgian contributions to dance music. Think Front 242, Technotronic, or Soulwax/2manydjs. This is the ground they built upon. Artists include: Chakachas, Mad Unity, Rene Costy, Alex Scorier, Open Sky Unit, Plus, Andre Brasseur, Chicken Curry & His Pop Percussion Orchestra, Placebo, Les Hélions, Black Blood, S.S.O. (feat. Douglas Lucas & The Sugar Sisters ), Nico Gomez & His Afro Percussion Inc., Chocolat's, Amadeo, El Chicles, The Mol Percussion Band, Cos, Rene Costy & His Orchestra, The Rapture, Doug Lucas, Hein Huysmans Kwintet, Leo Cavallo, and Super Funk Special.

BRASSEUR, ANDRE Lost Gems from the 70's (2019 Jewelcase) 2CD
2019 jewelcase; includes 32-page booklet. You may never have heard of him, but unless you're a complete stranger to the 20th century, you have almost certainly heard at least some of his music. André Brasseur composed countless tunes that received plenty of airplay and were used as radio and TV music all over Europe in the late '60s and the '70s. His biggest hit, "Early Bird Satellite" sold millions internationally. This compilation focuses on a lesser-known aspect of Brasseur's musical output. In addition to his quest for the perfect intro tune, his innumerable live performances, and his management of several successful restaurants and discos, Brasseur recorded a great deal of experimental funky jams in the '70s. The most exciting and timeless of these lost cuts are compiled here -- 13 enchanting cult classics and hidden gems, ready to devour. The second CD contains some of Brasseur's most successful evergreens and hit singles, exclusive to the CD format of the collection. Includes liner notes by Jan Delvaux (Belpop Bonanza).

SELS, JACK Minor Works (2019 Jewelcase) 2CD
2019 jewelcase; includes 32-page booklet. Jack the hipster. A musician's musician. The white negro from the docks. Jack Sels has been given many nicknames throughout the years. The Antwerp saxophone player who died at the mere age of 48 in 1970, remains Belgium's most mythical jazz musician, both to those who knew him during his lifetime and those who only know him from the stories -- and there are quite some stories to be told about Jack Sels. Throughout his career, he would play with jazz legends such as Dizzy Gillespie, Lester Young, Lou Bennett, and Lucky Thompson, but he remained virtually unknown outside Belgium due to his reluctance to leave Antwerp. Almost fifty years after his death, Jack Sels remains Belgium's most intriguing jazz musician. Partly due to his limited discography, he is overlooked by a wider audience. Yet, his contribution to the development of the modern jazz scene in Belgium cannot be overestimated, and neither can his influence on his fellow musicians, to whom he was the embodiment of jazz. As vibraphone player Fats Sadi once said: "I loved Jack. He had never studied music and didn't have the least bit of technique. But if Jack played, the gates of heaven opened. Jack was more jazz than jazz itself." Minor Works is a collection of rare, previously unreleased studio and live recordings paying homage to the life and jazz of the enigmatic musician.

FELBM Tape 1/Tape 2 LP
In the Felbm project, Dutch multi-instrumentalist Eelco Topper steps away from his previous synthesizer-laden sounds as Falco Benz, towards a much looser, simpler, and sketch-like approach. Picking up a number of acoustic instruments, he began experimenting with a Tascam 4-track tape recorder and allowed these sketches to flourish. The result is Tape 1 and Tape 2, a two-part project stretching across fifteen tracks -- encompassing fluttering piano melodies, subtle jazz drums, rumba rhythms and soothing ambience. The jazz element links back to Topper's childhood. "I grew up playing drums, switched to playing piano at sixteen and in the mean time I produced hip-hop beats," he recalls. "I went to study jazz piano at the Utrecht Conservatory, which I finished with pain and effort... I was interested more in electronic and present-day music." This mix of being rooted in traditional jazz composition whilst searching for something more contemporary is the perfect encapsulation of these recordings. Tape 1's jazz roots are palpable and as things move into Tape 2, it takes on a neo-classical, psychedelic soundscape and cinematic quality. Vinyl album comes with dual front cover that can be flipped over, reflecting the project's two-segment structure. Caustic, dense, and centered around complex but exquisitely executed percussive motifs and driven, rising sequences -- many would argue an alliance between Shifted's heady, monochrome recordings and Lucy's beloved Stroboscopic Artefacts label is long overdue. "The Light Touch" is perhaps one of Shifted's more idiosyncratic pieces, rich with groove. "Seel" showcases the artist's talent for building tension with minimal elements. "Mixen" riffs on its predecessor's approach but strips back the percussive elements further and ups the ante with searing drone signals rising up above the lead sequence driving the track.

Swiss electro-acoustic artist Israel Quellet's fifth opus. A new mysterious work around the church organ this time. Complex and mysterious, secular and modern -- another challenging listen. Israel Quellet was born in Neuchâtel, Switzerland, 1972. He worked in the psychiatric field for several years. At 16, he discovers on his own some different soundworlds, such as Miles Davis's electric era, Sun Ra, dub, German cosmic music, Magma, Zappa, and many more. In 1997, he stepped into the action and, following the advice of a sound engineer friend, he bought microphones, a digital mixing board, and studio monitors. Basically, he turned part of his basement into a soundsmith-ing studio. That is when he started to create, out of his immediate surroundings, sound works that have little to do with what is "normally" being done. Appreciated by composer Jorge E. Campos, Quellet is supported by the Centre Pierre Schaeffer in Paris. In 2003, he contacted Sub Rosa; three years later, he releases his first CD. Comes in a digipack.

HOOKER, WILLIAM ... Is Eternal Life 2LP
"Drummer, composer and poet William Hooker has been a tireless force in free improvised music for over 40 years. He emerged from New York's loft jazz scene in the mid-70s, part of a generation of artists fueled by the social, political and cultural frustrations of their era. This second wave of American free jazz would push relentlessly into new territories -- collaborating in a variety of non-traditional settings, establishing their own labels, venues, etc. -- all in an effort at creative self-determination. While William Hooker's output extends past 70 albums as leader, it all began with the double LP ... Is Eternal Life. Recorded in 1975-1976 and released privately on the artist's own Reality Unit Concepts imprint, ... Is Eternal Life is nothing short of visionary. Filled with tension, intricacy and raw fury, these extended compositions feature the playing of David Murray, Mark Miller, David S. Ware, Hasaan Dawkins and Les Goodson."

MEKONS, THE The Quality Of Mercy Is Not Strnen LP
"After two singles for Fast Product, Leeds art-punk collective The Mekons signed with Virgin Records in 1979. The band would have to borrow gear from their mates Gang Of Four to record their major label debut. In classic Mekons style, the album's back cover featured a photo of Gang Of Four instead of themselves. As Simon Reynolds writes, 'The Quality Of Mercy Is Not Strnen got a mixed reception at the time. Listening to it now, though, the first LP sounds more of a piece with the band's early punk singles. What's striking is the commonality of sound across the three key Leeds groups of that moment (Gang Of Four, Delta 5 and The Mekons). There are textural affinities in terms of scrawny abrasiveness and a general departure from rock 'n' roll norms of singing and emoting.' With boundless energy, The Mekons net a dozen barbed takes on pop culture, art and politics. 'What Are We Going To Do Tonight' stands out as a razor-sharp critique of leisure, while 'Beetroot' drowns apathy in angular riffs and catchy, unmelodic chants. Clad in one of the most striking record covers of its era, The Quality Of Mercy Is Not Strnen is now available in the US for the first time. Liner notes by Simon Reynolds."

GARRIE, NICK The Nightmare Of J.B. Stanislas CD
Tapete present a reissue of Nick Garrie's The Nightmare Of J.B. Stanislas, originally released in 1968. The Englishman recorded his folk-pop masterpiece in France at the tender age of nineteen. The year was 1968 and Garrie felt ill at ease with the lavish arrangements accompanying his songs. Worse still, the label owner committed suicide and the record virtually disappeared without trace -- until it resurfaced in 2005. Tapete's release includes numerous bonus tracks, rare photograph, and extensive liner notes."... The Nightmare Of J.B. Stanislas feels unmistakably English, and yet never ventures near the childlike tropes of British psychedelia, never hints at prog or flirts with the pastoral folk stylings coming out of the UK in the late 1960s. One very good reason for this oddness is that this album in fact came out of Paris as the result of one heroic act of cross-Channel cultural misunderstanding . . . the story of his debut LP sounds eerily poignant in today's age of European turmoil. It is the tale of a boy who grew up on both sides of the Channel, forever too French for Britain and too British for France, with roots that went back a lot farther still . . . His father's idée fixe meant that come his 18th birthday young Nick found himself in line for two years' service in the French army. Ten years prior to that, the British side of his upbringing had condemned him to the trauma of a Norwich boarding school . . . In his youth, Garrie's 'gods' were Jacques Brel, Georges Brassens and Georges Moustaki. No wonder The Nightmare Of J.B. Stanislas sounds and feels a lot more like the Tuileries than Hyde Park, more French Riviéra than Brighton pier. In fact the beaches of Saint Tropez were the place where these songs first found an audience when a still teenage Nick Garrie lived precariously on the run from the French army. Having produced some demos in Brussels (included in this collection, alongside a non-album single and one later demo) and renounced his French citizenship, Garrie passed an audition with Lucien Morisse, boss at the then predominant Parisian record label Disc'AZ . . . None other than the eminent Eddie Vartan was employed to give the young Englishman's songs a full orchestral makeover. Having finished his recordings with some 50-odd grumpy French studio hacks in just two weeks, Garrie eagerly awaited the album's release. But on the day before Stanislas was due to appear the news broke that Lucien Morisse had committed suicide. The unexpected death of the man who had signed him also meant the death knell for Garrie's record..." --Robert Rotifer

FRIEDRICH SUNLIGHT Sag Es Erst Morgen CD
"A balmy autumn evening in London: I'm nestled in the crowd of a sold-out show at The Lexington to witness one of Louis Philippe's rare performances. The opening act, Friedrich Sunlight, hits the stage. Right from the first notes of the opening song, I listen spellbound. Catchy 'Ba-ba-bas' and unbelievable arrangements pull me and the others closer to the front: Who is that? I'm amazed but yet, can't understand a single word being sung: The singer, gifted with a soft, distinctive voice, sings everything in German. Later in the evening, I bump into him again. He's involved in a lively conversation with a distinguished gentleman. I step in, we introduce each other: His name is Kenji and he is telling Robert Forster of The Go-Betweens the story of his life, how he, a child of Japanese immigrants, moved from San Francisco to Germany. And finally, how he ended up in Augsburg to join like-minded musicians to make music influenced by sunshine pop of the '60s and British pop of the early '80s under the name Friedrich Sunlight . . . The following summer, I'm standing on the concrete roof of the Haus der Kulturen der Welt in Berlin. It's already early evening, but it's still brutally hot, and much to my surprise, I see Kenji again: Friedrich Sunlight is the opening act for The Zombies, which somehow suits the motto of this evening's event: "Goodbye UK -- and Thank You for the Music". After their two intoxicating performances, I get the chance to meet the other band members -- pianist Bernd, guitarist Florian, bassist Thomas, and drummer Marc. We talk about the recordings for their second album and about the new songs, including the Northern Soul-tinged 'Sag Es Erst Morgen', likely the first single, and 'Kleines Haus', a tune reminiscent of The Velvet Underground and a cheerfully sharp reckoning with Donald Trump . . . Months later I hear from Friedrich Sunlight, along with some sad news they send me an advance copy of their album: The energetic, string-laden opener 'Sag Es Erst Morgen' kicks off the LP of the same name, as well as eleven other highlights of contemporary pop music. The album, masterfully mixed in London by a friend of the band, Ian Button, immediately seems airier, pleasantly more accessible and more varied than the first album. Sunshine pop numbers ('Mit Dir') are followed by bossa nova-like pieces ('Fernweh') and '60s persiflages ('Radical And Chic'). The endless search for harmony, the polyphonic vocal arrangements and the band's very own lyrical world harken back to their debut. But whoever hasn't lifted off the ground by now, just listen to those horns on the second track: 'Was Will Man Noch Mehr'..." --Rikard Gustavson

DORAU, ANDREAS Das Wesentliche CD
Andreas Dorau's love affair with pop music blossomed early. Long before he had his first top ten hit at the tender age of sixteen, before he became one of a select few German artists to sign to Mute Records and before he hit the French charts with "Girls In Love", little Andreas retreated to his bedroom with a handful of singles -- Sparks, T-Rex, Beatles, Tina Charles, or whoever else was hot in his childhood years -- and listened to these discs over and over again. There he sat, enthralled by the sounds coming out of his Dual-1224 record player. Yet, however much he loved "Sugar Baby Love", "Yellow Submarine", and "Hot Love", the youthful, slightly eccentric (even then) Dorau could not help thinking why didn't they get straight to the point? Why not skip "In the town where I was born ..." for example and launch straight into "We all live in a yellow submarine"? Nice and simple, short and sweet. If music were a sandwich, Dorau would toss the bread and just eat the filling. To the detriment of the fragile vinyl, not to mention the displeasure of his sister (they were her records, after all), he would lift the needle and drop it onto his favored grooves (the chorus). To this day, Andreas Dorau's aversion to verses is as strong as ever. Should one point out to him that his own albums actually contain more than a few verses, the artist is wont to reply: "The record company made me!" The sheer nerve of it! Fortunately, he has now arrived at Tapete Records, a label renowned for giving free rein to libertine spirits. The songs on Das Wesentliche feel all the more opulent for having left so much out. And they are wonderfully brief -- a brilliant move in this internet age of shrinking attention spans. It is a stroke of genius to remove anything and everything which may run the risk of being boring or annoying. Andreas Dorau produced Das Wesentliche together with top producer Zwanie Jonson. Bubblegum, dance, HI-NRG, leftfield electronica, junk shop glam, and yacht rock are all signposted along the way. Dorau is supported by friends like the Marinas, Carsten Erobique Meyer, and Gunther Buskies in his daring endeavors to strip away unnecessary ballast from the music. May his confrères follow his visionary example in the future.

TRAXMAN Tekvision Volume 2 LP
Tekvision Volume 1 was a stone cold classic (TEKLIFE 006LP, 2017), with Rolling Stone charting it at #3 in their top 20 EDM records of 2017. Two years on, Cornelius "Traxman" Ferguson returns with the second instalment, featuring seven exceptional new footwork productions. Traxman is a bonafide OG, with a discography dating back to the halcyon era of ghetto house in the late '80s and early '90s. 30 years on, Traxman is a revered figure in Chicago's urban music scene, having presided over the evolution from ghetto house to juke and from juke to footwork culture. Originally released in 1989, "Work Dat Mutha Fucker" by Steven Poindexter is considered to be one of the most influential tracks from the early days of ghetto house. Traxman remixes it brilliantly on this release, reworking the stripped back, minimalist drum beat of the original into an upfront Footwork pattern. This sense of continuity is equally evident on "Let Me See You Naked" featuring DJ Juicy, and Traxman's remix of "To Da Hoooz" by DJ Deeon. These productions successfully capture the sexual energy and exuberance of ghetto house, turbo charged at 160BPM. Elsewhere on the record, Traxman explores different moods whilst always keeping the dance floor firmly in mind. The opening track "It's Lasting Bass" lays an infectious vocal harmony over complex drum patterns and a fearsome bassline. "Osaka" opens with mellow, sultry keys before introducing a wobbling synth and diced up orchestral samples. "4 Da Lyfe" is a soulful and slightly more meditative track, with a vocal loop expressing solidarity and self-affirmation. "Wildcard" featuring Jana Rush, stands alone as the only track without a vocal element, instead utilizing a piercing and insistent synth to create a powerful sonic intensity. Overall, this is a triumphant record, and a worthy successor to the original Tekvision release, proving once again that Traxman is an unrivalled exponent of MPC-driven footwork energy.

As so eloquently put by John Peel, 'If there has been anything in the history of popular music which could be described as a work of art in a way that people who are involved in other areas of art would understand, then Trout Mask Replica is probably that work.' In full partnership with the Zappa Family Trust and to celebrate the relaunch of the seminal Bizarre label imprint, Third Man Records is proud to announce Captain Beefheart and the Magic Band's Trout Mask Replica. Out of print on vinyl for nearly ten years, this remaster was helmed by industry legend Bob Ludwig and cut by the estimable Chris Bellman at Bernie Grundman Mastering. Utilizing crystalline-quality safety masters kept in the Zappa family vault for decades by the trustworthy Joe Travers, the audio here is positively glorious. Every last skronk breathes full life into the room. Every twisted guitar figure uncurls onto paths previously unpaved. Every last bark and howl shines resolute through the vast emptiness of your mind. Previous countless Trout Mask Replica repressings used scans of scans of scans of the cover image, but the original Cal Schenkel cover photo has been tracked down and reproduced here at its clearest -- its resolution from the original release in 1969. If you've only ever seen a jpg online or fuzzy, smeared-looking CD issues from the 90's, be prepared to be wowed by the fully engaging spectrum this iconic image casts. This 2xLP is pressed on heavyweight 180-gram black vinyl for that full-on frenetic feeling. 180g vinyl, gatefold Stoughton tip-on jacket, booklet insert."

AMBARCHI, MARK FELL, WILL GUTHRIE & SAM SHALABI, OREN Oglon Day LP
Oglon Day is the debut release from the quartet of Oren Ambarchi, Mark Fell, Will Guthrie, and Sam Shalabi. Though Ambarchi had previously worked on separate occasions with Fell and Guthrie, the two days the four musicians spent together in a London studio producing this LP was their first meeting as a quartet, preceding an acclaimed performance at the 2016 Mas?f?t Festival. The four musicians have created an effortless blend of their seemingly disparate approaches, carving out a musical space that gives equal weight to Ambarchi's physically affecting guitar explorations, Fell's stuttering electronic pulse, Guthrie's virtuosic drumming, and Shalabi's psychedelic oud improvisations. Oglon Day is an inspired meeting of the acoustic and the electronic, the composed and the improvised, the human and the machine, the austere and the joyous. Quite unlike anything else in the four musicians' respective back catalogs, it also offers a surprisingly accessible point of entry for any listener so lucky as to be unfamiliar with their work.

BAND OF HOLY JOY Neon Primitives CD
Band Of Holy Joy have gone through many incarnations of musical imagination, inspiration, and output, without straying from their roots in poetic expressions of social observation and critique -- and good tunes! As are their diverse spiritual brethren -- The Mekons, Nightingales, The Pop Group -- Johny Brown and compatriots are best in periods of social upheaval and rule by opportunistic, insipid demagogues, which is why Band Of Holy Joy, like the aforementioned bands, are in the midst of a powerful renaissance. Rarely had an album title inadvertently captured the zeitgeist in as perfectly absurd a manner as the last full-length, Funambulist We Love You (PICI 011CD/LP, 2017), and its "hit" (if you will) was the metaphorical "To Leave Or Remain", which caught the shock of the Brexit vote results. What only two years ago was vaguely plaintive consideration in the face of a coming storm has now cemented into rage. In real terms, Neon Primitives' stand-out track, "The Devil Has A Hold On The Land", names the very forces of evil which have led to the ills of 2019. Not to diminish the power of the album as a whole... "Lost In The Night"'s palate-cleansing exorcism leads the way to "The Devil Had A Hold On The Land". A surprise cover of Vincent Gallo's "So Sad" is the drowsy Sunday morning hangover to "Ecstasy Snowbirds"' woke realization of a failed relationship. "Take Head Calumniators" is a call to arms against deceivers, breaking the introspection of the two previous songs. The second side features four songs of loose optimism performed in a mixture of styles. "Some People Have Winged Fortune" fractures a version of the melody from Orange Juice's "Upwards And Onwards" to a message of hope. "Urban Pilgrims", lyrically reminiscent of Band Of Holy Joy's early song craft, is a half-told tale of spiritual renewal in a landscape which would seem antipathetic to any form of rebirth. "Electric Pilgrims" links the process of aging to the nearness of satori. The epic closer "We Are Sailing To The Island Of Light" is a dark sea shanty championing the shambolic assortment of people who offer hope in dark times; a riposte to those forces of evil called out in "The Devil Has A Hold On The Land".

BLUE ORCHIDS The Magical Record Of Blue Orchids CD
While recording 2018's Righteous Harmony Fist (PICI 015CD/LP), Blue Orchids messed about with a few covers of insanely obscure low-fi garage/psych tunes. Few casual aficionados of rock music will know more than a song or two from this set -- the likes of The Penny Saints and The Aardvarks and their kin not exactly being household names. In fact, of the seven '60s acts with songs covered here, none lasted more than a handful of singles. Complementing those songs are covers of songs by two more recent groups. The swirling keyboards of The Growlers' "Pavement And The Boot" is distilled back to its fundamental garage essence, while Crystal Stilts' two-minute original, "Love Is A Wave", is slowed down and channeled back to the melodic pop wonder lingering beneath its Reid Brothers buzzsaw and pays respect to the band, who'd themselves covered Blue Orchids' "Low Profile" a few years back. Of special interest will be "Addicted To The Day", the album's key song, the words for which were recently found in a 1977 notebook of Bramah's which at Mark E. Smith had borrowed and then scribbled down the "poem" in thanks, to which Bramah added music. The haunting lines, "How could I have suspected my abysmal future/ A doom which has haunted me/ And turned me into a wreck and a parody", are the centerpiece of the album, a concept compiled of bits and pieces of esoteric tunes, telling a tale of Faustian doom in a pact with forces of evil.

WAKHEVITCH, IGOR Kshatrya (The Eye Of The Bird) LP
LP version. Transversales Disques presents Kshatrya (The Eye Of The Bird), a never released before recording by French avant-garde electronic composer Igor Wakhevitch. Wakhevitch composed a bunch of major experimental albums in the '70s, such as Logos (1970), Docteur Faust (1971), Hathor (1972), Les Fous D'or (1975), Nagual (1977), and Let's Start (1979). During this 10-year period, Wakhevitch was close to Jean-Michel Jarre, Pink Floyd, Soft Machine, and legendary choreographer Maurice Bejart having with him many conversations around dance and music, human body and soul, spiritual path, collective life, new society, and human evolution. As a composer, Igor Wakhevitch collaborated with Salvador Dali, Carolyn Carlson, and Terry Riley, to name a few. He's considered as one of the first French composer using synthesizers like Synthi AKS, ARP2600, or Moog modular systems. After spending almost 30 years in India, Igor Wakhevitch dug in his archives this unreleased work recorded in 1999 on his "Mysterious Island 88" system. Esoteric, sacred, and cosmic, Kshatrya (The Eye Of The Bird) is the logical follow up of Igor's early works and a monumental piece of electronic music. A must!

MARCHETTI, GIANNI Il Magnifico Tony Carrera LP
Transversales Disques presents the first ever LP reissue of Gianni Marchetti's Il Magnifico Tony Carrera, ultra-rare Italian soundtrack originally released on cult CAM label in 1969. Gianni Marchetti wrote this beautiful score for the Euro-spy film Il Magnifico Tony Carrera as he was more of a songwriter than a film composer. The score includes lots of different atmospheres and arrangements: from fuzzy dark psychedelic themes with harpsichord and haunted choirs (performed by the famous 4 + 4 di Nora O²rlandi) to angelic and dreamy vocal themes. Also contains some tense climax sitar tunes with beautiful bass sound. Compared to the original CAM LP, this reissue dropped some carnivalesque tracks in order to include some nice unreleased variations of the themes, plus all the suspense cues that were largely removed from the original track listing. Il Magnifico Tony Carrera is definitely a major score of the Italian Silver Age. Remastered from the original master tapes.

MODELL, ROD Captagon CD
Tresor Records welcomes Rod Modell to its catalog with the release of his new album Captagon. Rod Modell needs no introduction, his various projects render him a master of techno. In repetition and barely noticeable change, Modell re-sculptures perceptions. His sound-design echoes cinematic ethereality, where ferric artifacts slam against percussion, rusty delays filter observation -- the resulting web is a complex, radiating ambience that etches a natural ebb-and-flow. Transformative sounds alight from the outset, "Triangulation" recalls flickering harmonies and grains, a tectonic swipe. Fast-paced dub techno emerges in "Reiki", the disorienting clangs suggesting a step away from his recent ambient excursions. "Ito" crunches the pulse further with insistent noise, into soaring epiphanies of darkened transmissions. Modell singularly uproots standard sonic hierarchies of techno production, crisp static as forceful as his beats, a provocation of rhythm and noise. Unceasing in its fast tempo, "Jade" is trademark Tresor business -- the seismic sub-sonics underpin a momentous drive, with reverberated vocal inflections disfiguring warped, dancing materials. "Scrawler" is upfront and direct, a slamming groove and swaying chords di using ethereality. Enter vast chambers of smeared minimalism. Where Modell's recent releases had indicated a priority for ambient sounds, this new album extends Modell's essential vision within techno. Closing track "Air-Port" shows Modell at his most crucial best -- an ethereal colossus of sub-bass weight and morphing geometry. CD version includes three bonus tracks; includes DAL remix.

NORMIL HAWAIIANS What's Going On CD
Upset The Rhythm present a reissue of Normil Hawaiians' What's Going On?, originally released in 1984. To Normil Hawaiians, getting out of lockstep with Thatcherism seemed imperative. Adding to an overriding sense of anxiety, close friend and band associate Martin Pawson took his life in July 1983. Following More Wealth Than Money, released on Illuminated Records in 1982, there was an impetus to make good on hard won achievements. Rehearsal and writing sessions resumed in the early months of 1983 at Intergalactic Arts Studios. IGA was a ramshackle, semi-residential rehearsal space. Illuminated Records had been sending artists to Foel Studios in Powys, Wales for years, and it had become a kind of refuge for the Hawaiians. Studio owner/manager Dave Anderson (Hawkwind/Amon Düül II) was welcoming, unruffled, and accommodating when around a dozen band members, friends, and family emerged from the "mini-peace convoy" of vehicles into the hazy, pastoral care of the warm, Welsh countryside. Whereas More Wealth Than Money had evolved in the recording studio, What's Going On began to develop as a more pre-meditated, albeit piecemeal work. "Quiet Village" and the unreleased "Outpost" had already been finished at Foel in February 1983. Recording Engineer Brian Snelling recalls how the Hawaiians approach to making the album was unconventional and spontaneous, reveling in chance and openness. Rehearsal tapes from IGA were played along to, and improvisations allowed to develop, with further layers of sound accreting (as can be heard on "Big Lies"). "Free Tibet" was created by the band playing together exploratively with Snelling waiting to hit "Record" until he heard that something interesting was coalescing. He recalls the sessions being initially unorthodox, but eventually settling into a friendly, productive, and very familial affair. Mixed tapes were then taken by Dave Andersen and Guy Smith to Charly Records' editing studio in London. Here they spliced the recordings into an irregular yet coherent, flowing work. Final masters were then EQ'd and cut by Graeme Durham at the newly opened Exchange Mastering Studios in Camden. And then nothing happened. Unbeknownst to the band, Illuminated Records were getting into deep financial problems. The label gave the band 250 copies, but the record shops wouldn't touch them -- the company had been blacklisted. This intricate, challenging and engaging work had been failed by poor circumstance. CD version includes seven bonus tracks; comes in gatefold wallet with booklet; edition of 500.

HACKNEY COLLIERY BAND Collaborations: Volume One LP
LP version. 180 gram vinyl; gatefold sleeve. After the success of their critically-acclaimed third album Sharpener (HCB 001CD/002LP, 2016), which reached #3 in the jazz charts and #14 in the independent music charts, London's brass juggernauts Hackney Colliery Band blaze back onto the scene with their first collaborative album, ushering in a whole new era for the band. Featuring collaborations with a host of key names in jazz and world music including amongst others the father of Ethio-jazz Mulatu Astatke, British jazz funk legend James Taylor, trombonist Dennis Rollins, UK saxophonist Pete Wareham, and Beninese singer-songwriter and Grammy Award-winner Angélique Kidjo, Hackney Colliery Band have effortlessly transformed their explosive live energy into 11 original recordings that push the groove and form in an accomplished manner. On Collaborations: Volume One, writers Steve Pretty, Olly Blackman, and Luke Christie have between them penned the outfit's most dynamic material to date. "Mm Mm'" (featuring Angélique Kidjo and Roundhouse Choir) merges Beninese grooves with wah pedal trumpet textures, and the rousing call-and-response between Kidjo's soaring vocal and the exhilarating choir adds a richness and depth to the composition. On "Snowfire", innovative Norwegian pianist Bugge Wesseltoft brings a Euro/nu-jazz feel, while Dennis "Funkybone" Rollins adds his trademark virtuoso trombone to the carnival-flavored "Ricochet". There's an energy, respect for tradition, and the exuberance of London in Hackney Colliery Band's work, best exemplified in the downright thrilling James Taylor collaboration "Hypothetical". "Netsanet" featuring Mulatu Astatke is a deep exploration of Mulatu's trademark Ethio-jazz, while "Crushing Lactic", composed by Tom Rogerson (fresh from a recent Brian Eno collaboration) has a frenzied flow, with big horns and driving rhythm section. Elsewhere, Pete Wareham (stalwart of the London jazz revival) lends his free-flowing sax to "What's Gone Before", leading you into a powerful communion of jazz and brass as Mulatu Astatke's "Derashe" takes the listener down a vibrating rhythmic path while accompanied by blasts of horns and Mulatu's trademark vibraphone. Two spoken word compositions ("Why Yellow" and "Climbing Up My Own Life Until I Die") featuring York-born writer and comedian Rob Auton lend an introspective voice.

MOELLER, BRENDON Materialize LP
Brendon Moeller is an artist that needs no introduction. The South African-born living in the US, like few of his generation constantly challenges himself with new concepts and ideas, has incorporated techno, dub, jazz, ambient, sound design into his works throughout the years. He's never chased the limelight, but instead the work, one idea after the next, one project after the other, restless. He has collaborated with labels like Echocord, Third Ear, Electric Deluxe, Prologue, and Mord, to name some. Materialize is his first work for Vibrant Music. From his early days in various bands in the '80s and '90s, Brendon liked indie, shoegaze, ambient, moody, cinematic 'scapes. With Materialize he came full circle, reaching out to his early influences, but with the knowledge and experience of many years of exploration of modular synths, to create a concept space that feels intimate, and at the same time vivid evokes visual imagery. It explores the time space through a minimalist, stoic approach. It tells the story of how we are all linked into this tree of music we call electronic music, wherever each one is coming from. A celebration of life through the mind of one of today's scholars of electronic music. A liberation from the strictness of tempo and metronomes, to reach to a more creative state.

NIVHEK After Its Own Death / Walking In A Spiral Towards The House CD
"Opaque assemblages of Mellotron, guitar, field recordings, tapes and broken FX pedals by Pacific Northwest artist Liz Harris, created during and after two contrasting residencies in the Azores, Portugal and Murmansk, Russia and combined with pieces made at home in Astoria, Oregon. The collection's unique dual design functions as a forked path, existing independently of one another but with roots intertwined. She cites her score for HYPNOSIS DISPLAY as a compositional reference point, inspired by 'interior mnemonic device landscapes' and 'curiosity around a sadness.' In pacing, palette and poignancy, these sides rank among Harris' most stark, primordial work: fragile, feverish, ominous and otherworldly. She describes this music as 'a requiem, a ritual, to unlock and release feelings,' a sense of shadowy masses, moving backwards, in spirals, massive doorways opening chaotic forces, 'a toxic concentrated reduction of something much darker bubbling beneath.' Her artistry for mapping richly detailed inner worlds is nowhere more expressive and enigmatic, vibrations and voices gliding dimly out of the void, 'wraithlike and ethereal, their existence in the mist questionable.' Initially released in a private edition that vanished almost as quickly as it was announced, After Its Own Death / Walking In A Spiral Towards The House is presented here in a beautiful second edition on Superior Viaduct's imprint W.25TH."

HIROSE, YUTAKA NOVA + 4 2CD
WRWTFWW Records present an expanded reissue of one of the most fascinating Japanese ambient/environmental albums ever made, NOVA by Yutaka Hirose, originally released in 1986. The expanded reissue includes the album known as Soundscape 2: Nova, sourced from its original masters, as well as four never-released-before recordings over 50 minutes. Initially released in 1986 as part of the Soundscape series. Commissioned by Misawa Home Corporation for use in their prefabricated houses, Yutaka Hirose's NOVA has grown to become a mythical piece of the Japanese minimalist/ambient/environmental scene of the eighties. Initiated around the enchanting landscapes of the two first tracks recorded for the project, "Nova" and "Epilogue", Yutaka Hirose's magnum opus serenely blends vintage synth with nature sounds, exploring soothing palettes and organic backdrops. For "Slow Sky", Hirose explains he "went for a pointillism-like sound, and tried to express a scenery of awakening, where the portal of a heart is opening up", while on "Humming The Sea", he "tried to compose a kind of music that expresses the daily, lazy life of child-like innocence in a summer vacation in some small town." The bonus material gathers four long unreleased pieces created around the same period of time for installations, described by Yutaka Hirose as "not music per se but rather sound sculptures", and including the haunting "Shadow Of A Water Droplet" which was recorded for an Ikebana exhibition. All in all, NOVA + 4 is a transcendent experience of nature in the urban context, an oeuvre which, much like Midori Takada's Through The Looking Glass (WRWTFWW 018LP/WRWTFWW 019CD/LP, 2017) or Satoshi Ashikawa's Still Way (1999), holds the power to appease the soul in turbulent times. As one inspired YouTube commenter once said when describing Yutaka Hirose's masterstroke: "I can't tell if the birds are singing inside or outside! Thank you!" Includes liner notes in English and Japanese. Double-CD version comes as a digipack.

GRAUZONE Eisbar 12"
Repressed. WRWTFWW Records announce the official reissue of Grauzone's essential 1981 maxi single with timeless classic "Eisbär", proto-techno beast "FILM 2", and romantic synth ballad "Ich Lieb Sie", just in time for the 40th anniversary of the Swiss band's formation. "Ich möchte ein Eisbär sein?" written by Martin Eicher after a nightmare in which he saw talking polar bears on the walls, and with music by the Grauzone crew consisting of Martin and his brother Stephan Eicher, Marco Repetto, Christian "GT" Trüssel, and Claudine Chirac (on saxophone), "Eisbär" is the most recognizable title from the band, a sublime mix of ingredients reflecting the transitional era it comes from -- the raw energy of punk music still palpable, combined with the audacity of early electronics, the warm groove of a disco gem, beautifully fragile lyrics, and one of the best basslines ever. It became a mega hit, totally unplanned, but how could you resist such a track? "FILM 2" is the ultimate B-side monster, a menacing all-instrumental pre-techno masterpiece, slowly building to a magnetizing frenzy. An instant underground favorite, it was famously heard played at both speeds depending on the scenes and DJs you were frequenting, 45rpm as it was first intended, and 33rpm for the cosmic experience. The maxi single ends with "Ich Lieb Sie", a synth-pop meets doo-wop ballad, a true love song oozing with innocence -- simple, stylish, and just right. At the crossroads of post-punk, new wave, pop, and electronic experimentation, the Eisbär maxi offers three songs that are technically different but hold the same spirit, the perfect embodiment of Grauzone's music -- wild, unpredictable, and youthful, yet sophisticated, catchy, and ingenious. The magic recipe for the good stuff. Stephan Eicher went on to be, arguably, the most successful Swiss musician ever, with an international career extending from pop chanson to experimental escapades and collaborations with Moondog, artists Sophie Calle and John Armleder, and author Martin Suter among many other luminaries. Marco Repetto flourished as a techno and ambient producer, releasing multiple projects including releases on Aphex Twin's Rephlex label. Grauzone and WRWTFWW will continue to collaborate on the band's 40th anniversary reissue campaign, with numerous projects planned for the year, including a vast selection of music, visuals, and literature never available before. Sourced from the original reels; cut at 45rpm; Includes iconic artwork on a 350gsm sleeve.

BASSETT/MARGARIDA GARCIA/MANUEL MOTA, MARCIA Here They Rest Immobile LP
Marcia Bassett, Margarida Garcia, and Manuel Mota present Here They Rest Immobile on Yew Records. "It feels cliché to refer to any music as dreamy, but when you encounter music that actually feels and breathes like a dream, it's another matter altogether. Sometimes you open your mouth to speak and hear the voice of a complete stranger. Or you see a flower of a color that doesn't exist. This is that kind of record -- elusive and intoxicating. Two guitars and a bass, barely recognizable as such, coming together to conjure a startling world of shadow and reflection. The music can seem almost disembodied on the one hand, while on the other the careful listening and responsiveness of the musicians behind the sounds is evident at every turn -- human and inhuman at once. The three pieces feel both narrative and wholly abstract, a story somehow unmoored from events. It's an album of transfixing paradoxes. The first side is occupied by 'The Unfortunate Traveler'. Tones moan and echo, resonating against themselves like enormous insects. Sounds emerge and retreat into caves. Ominous howls, eerie rhythmic washes, and deep rumbles all ebb and flow outside any ability to predict what will happen next. Every path seems altered the moment you start down it. An unfortunate traveler indeed. On 'Tympanie Of Tears', the first track on the second side, Garcia's bass pulses with timpani-like resonance, pulsing as Bassett and Mota's guitars swirl like serpents, weaving and winding, forming imaginary pathways. We encounter moments of more recognizable string work, which only expands the sense of disorienting stupor. 'Durational Dust Construction' rounds out the set, with its subterranean glimmers of breath, airs rolling over one another, gliding and scraping down hills of their imaginary landscape, oars rowing slowly out to sea. Across all the terrible conditions, unexpected attempts at life, a magnetic dance around poles that will never touch. It's a record that arouses the senses through obfuscation, a dense riddle constructed from its own speculative geometry. Maybe I thought I'd seen a ghost, and in those days, I found ghosts extremely unpleasant. Not anymore. Now, on the contrary, they brighten up my afternoons." --Matt Krefting, Holyoke, MA 2019
