ALEXANDER, DANIEL Traumatology One 12"
The third release under the new identity of 2DIY4 is an up-close look into the soul of Daniel Alexander. Traumatology -- a subjective perspective that is so universally alike within anyone who questions. "The motif of the spiritual response to our environment and our socio-political climate is what ties these songs together," Daniel Alexander says. A subtle feeling of estrangement with society becomes an immensely overwhelming sensation. Traumatology is a testimony of an everyday struggle against despair and the question if there can be deliverance that couldn't be any more sincere.

AGEMO & THE DISCO JUMPERS, ONOM Magic Polaroid CD
Ever since Onom Agemo & The Disco Jumpers broke the dreaded curse of the difficult second album by releasing Liquid Love (2017), a cocktail so spicy and delectable that it could warm the cockles of the grumpiest man alive's heart, even in the most Arctic conditions, everybody wondered how the Onom crew could top that one. But now you have an opportunity to whip out your Magic Polaroid as proof that this wasn't an impossible project. Never before has the band so successfully captured their full-on live sound as they do here, thanks to three days of recording frenzy at Daniel Nentwig and Sebastian Maschat's Butterama studio, a haven of analog hardware hidden in a remote part of Berlin's Neukölln district. The exploding kaleidoscope of styles that make up this album, perfectly reflected by the stunning cover artwork from Nick Henderson and photography by Christoph Rothmeier, means that they can no longer be confined to their early description as an Afro-funk quintet or merely described as a lively tribute to the artists which have influenced them; their sound is 100 per cent pure uncut Onom Agemo, even though every track feels like a new beginning. The presence of a charismatic in-house vocalist who brought her own lyrics along has also boosted their confidence considerably and provided a further knock-out punch to their onstage performances. No one will be disappointed as soon as the first bars of "The Trumpets Of Denmark" stomp on stage like a boisterous fanfare, with Johannes Schleiermacher's impressive wall of sound production making the musicians sound like a much bigger band than what their line-up suggests (with Maria Schneider from Andromeda Mega Express Orchestra adding some extra percussive clout) and just the right amount of dizzying cross-rhythms to steer it away from potential bombast. When Onom Agemo's powerhouse vocalist Natalie Greffel starts chanting what at first sounds like a string of onomatopoeia, it soon becomes clear that she's laying down her manifesto for a nostalgic space-age yet to come, with a few key words serving as mantras (focus, patience, tears, and creation). This is an invitation to drive off the information superhighway and its endless litany of polite noises, to redirect our gaze inside ourselves and learn to understand and sometimes question how others perceive us.

FRANK, JACKSON C. Jackson C. Frank LP
"Jackson C. Frank's eponymous album is the embodiment of folk legend. Issued in late 1965 on the UK Columbia label, it was for many years more famous for its producer (Paul Simon) and the musicians who would go on to cover its songs (Nick Drake, Bert Jansch, Sandy Denny) than for the hauntingly beautiful music contained inside. Frank's backstory certainly adds to the legacy: born in Buffalo, New York, he used the settlement from a childhood accident to sail to London where he quickly became a fixture of the bustling folk scene. Performing a mix of blues standards and originals, he met fellow ex-pat Paul Simon who would put up the money to record Frank's only LP. For such a sparsely recorded work, Jackson C. Frank covers a lot of ground. From the rugged, world-weary opener 'Blues Run The Game' to the stunning melancholy of 'Milk And Honey,' Frank's nimble acoustic guitar and passionate howls are all that is needed to power such authentic songwriting. Captured in a single-day session, these ten tracks are stark, gritty and seemingly out-of-place with time. There may be no '60s folk record that is simultaneously as rare and influential as Jackson C. Frank's self-titled debut."

FINN, SIMON Pass The Distance LP
"Few albums define a genre as succinctly as Simon Finn's Pass The Distance does for psychedelic folk. Not even landmark recordings by Pearls Before Swine or Skip Spence can stand up to the sheer madness of Finn's sole LP, originally released in 1970. After moving to London in 1967, Finn busked around town for a couple years before entering Camden's Chalk Farm Studios, best known for producing a string of reggae hits. Pass The Distance, however, would become more than a solo-acoustic project. Backed by free-improvisation innovators David Toop and Paul Burwell, Finn's dark, personal songs unravel lysergically over 40 minutes. Toop's sinewy electric guitar and Burwell's broad percussive palette lift up Finn's ardent strumming and snarling vocals, making this one wild ride in catharsis, introspection and raw merriment. As Finn tells journalist Dave Segal in an interview for this vinyl reissue, 'The songs were about alienation and loneliness. 'Jerusalem' came to me in one shot. I wrote it on mescaline and was playing it over and over and one of my flatmates wrote it down.' Pass The Distance remains a 'cult record' in the best sense of the term, possessing a hypnotic beauty all its own."

UPSETTERS, THE Double Seven LP
"Double Seven, released by Trojan in late 1973, was the last album Lee 'Scratch' Perry would release on the label for some considerable time, and it was essentially the final album project he put together before establishing his own Black Ark studio. Opening track 'Kentucky Skank' sets the tone with a slow creeper whose frying sounds underscore its role as a praise song to the Colonel's KFC recipes; the cosmic Moog blips come courtesy of Ken Elliott at Camden's Chalk Farm studio, also prominently featured on U-Roy's double-tracked, stereo-panned gambling ode 'Double Six.' David Isaacs' 'Just Enough' was cut a few years prior, which makes it slightly out of phase with the rest of the set, though the enigmatic 'In The Iaah' sounds mightily fresh, with its uncredited chorus said to come courtesy of the Wailers. Perry's own 'Jungle Lion' has hilarious roars from the maestro at the start, strangely grafted atop a reggae re-make of Al Green's 'Love and Happiness. Overall, Double Seven melds the soul, funk, reggae and dub elements that were constant in Perry's work during this phase. His enhanced audio spectrum and endless reference points would keep his music continually apart from that made by his peers.' --David Katz (excerpt from the liner notes)"

MANSFIELD/JOHN CAMERON, KEITH Voices In Harmony LP
Be With has worked with original label KPM to re-issue ten albums from across the KPM 1000 Series and the Themes International Music catalog, currently under KPM stewardship. Whether it's killer soul-funk, sweet jazz-samba, scuzzed-up guitars or accidental Balearic beauty, these records include some of the most innovative work from some of the most talented composers and musicians of the 20th century. These records were never readily available, being originally released as a ready-made, affordable alternative to commissioning music for television and radio. Consequentially the originals have been unobtainable for decades by all but the most dedicated collectors. The audio comes from the original analog tapes and has been remastered for vinyl by Be With regular Simon Francis. The same care has been taken with the sleeves, handing the reproduction duties over to Richard Robinson, the current custodian of KPM's brand identity. And don't worry! Those KPM stickers aren't stuck directly on the sleeves! This is classic work from Alan Parker, Alan Hawkshaw, Brian Bennett, Nick Ingman, James Clarke, Francis Coppieters, Keith Mansfield, David Snell, and John Fiddy.Be With Records presents a reissue of Keith Mansfield and John Cameron's Voices In Harmony, originally issued in 1973. Voices In Harmony was released in 1973 as "a selection of contemporary pop titles featuring voices, brass and rhythm." This collection of works by Mansfield and Cameron can also be described as "a string-laced, harmony-drenched KPM classic". From the bright, lilting harmonies of "Liquid Sunshine" to the melting flutes of "Loving Touch" and "Gentle Persuasion", this is warm, effervescent soul music for dreamy, idyllic moods. The supreme "Husky Birdsong" is so, so smooth, with its unrelenting bossa bassline and warm keyboards. "Half Forgotten Daydreams" is a gorgeous wordless groove. As with all ten re-issues, the audio for Voices In Harmony comes from the original analog tapes and has been remastered for vinyl by Be With regular Simon Francis. The same care has been taken with the sleeves, with carefully reproduced original art in handing the reproduction duties over to Richard Robinson. 180 gram vinyl.

INGMAN, NICK Distinctive Themes/Race To Achievement LP
Be With Records presents a reissue of Nick Ingman's Distinctive Themes/Race To Achievement, originally released in 1976. Distinctive Themes/Race To Achievement is legendary arranger Ingman exploring the two distinct ideas of "impressive themes varying in style from Basie to Elgar" and "a study in the pressure and rewards of achievement". Distinctive Themes is a veritable indulgence of variously-tempoed, full orchestra, big band workouts, from relaxed swing to more propulsive themes. The progressively building "Expanding Markets" is a true highlight, with its rolling pianos, contemplative electric guitar solos and moody horns over skipping beats. The dramatic "Against The Odds" is another stand-out. Race To Achievement is all rugged funk with stabbing chords and strutting horns. One has to acknowledge the fantastic "Tense Preparation", sampled by Prince Paul and Dan The Automator for Handsome Boy Modeling School's seminal "Magnetizing" with Del Tha Funky Homosapien. But the whole side's range from tense underscores to fast and punchy chase themes makes this a gem of the KPM catalog. Be With has worked with the hallowed KPM to re-issue ten of our favorites from across the KPM 1000 Series and the Themes International Music catalogue, currently under KPM stewardship. Whether it's killer soul-funk, sweet jazz-samba, scuzzed-up guitars or accidental Balearic beauty, these records include some of the most innovative work from some of the most talented composers and musicians of the 20th century. HAWKSHAW/BRIAN BENNETT/JOHN FIDDY, ALAN Hot Wax LP
Be With Records presents a reissue of Alan Hawkshaw/Brian Bennett/John Fiddy's Hot Wax, originally issued in 1976. Hot Wax is an assured KPM masterclass from a dream team line-up of Bennett, Hawkshaw and Fiddy. This is what happens when all three decide to explore the latest trends in production music. The latest as of 1976, of course. Fiddy's numbers are sumptuous, string-led and light. Floaty soft-psych underpinned by a solid groove, particularly on "Taste For Living" and "Fresh Start". If one is into Koushik and those early Manitoba/Caribou records -- and one should be -- these will be appreciated. The Bennett and Bennett/Hawkshaw stuff is on another level. "Capitol City" oscillates between driving funk and downbeat sentiment. "Name Of The Game" is tough, smokin' funk, famously sampled in 2007 by Madlib for Percee P's "Who With Me". "Bop On The Rocks" knocks hard and "Full Throttle" features a guitar solo with some of the nastiest, about-to-explode fuzz one is ever likely to hear. Be With has worked with the hallowed KPM to re-issue ten of our favorites from across the KPM 1000 Series and the Themes International Music catalogue, currently under KPM stewardship. MANSFIELD/ALAN HAWKSHAW/DAVID SNELL, KEITH Big Business/Wind of Change LP
Be With Records presents a reissue of Keith Mansfield/Alan Hawkshaw/David Snell's Big Business/Wind of Change, originally released in 1973. Big Business/Wind of Change is mainly the work of the great Mansfield but there's a killer cameo each from Hawkshaw and Snell to help deliver "a thematic suite, diverse in mood, applicable to dramatic and environmental situations". The Big Business of side A is all Mansfield; it's heavy on the suspense and features the vital "Hot Property", an insistent groove that Madlib sampled it to add to Lootpack's "Long Awaited", with Dilated Peoples. "Sleeping Giant 1" is a more fleshed-out version of the equally-dazzling "Fatal Error", evoking David Axelrod. Complete with guitar fills that recall Paris, Texas-era (1985) Ry Cooder, this record is needed for this piece alone. The horn-and-flute-led "Tycoon" is a head-nodder and "Power Complex" has some fantastic percussion. On Side B is the more expansive Wind Of Change, which includes the Snell and the Hawkshaw contributions. But these ain't no filler. Snell's shuffling "International Flight" sounds like a smooth Dorothy Ashby track tossed from the heavens. Hawkshaw's "Road And Rail" is about as luxurious and strung-out as the great man gets and it might just be the highlight of this whole set. Not to be outdone, if Mansfield's "Balance Of Power" doesn't make one feel like king of the world then one must be playing it wrong. Be With has worked with the hallowed KPM to re-issue ten of our favorites from across the KPM 1000 Series and the Themes International Music catalogue, currently under KPM stewardship. COPPIETERS, FRANCIS Piano Viberations LP
Be With Records present a reissue of Francis Coppieters's Piano Viberations, originally issued in 1975. Piano Viberations' "small group jazz featuring piano and vibes with rhythm" makes for a gorgeous Coppieters showcase, and is surely one of Belgium's best-kept musical secrets. Piano Viberations is arguably the most low-key of the KPM and Themes records Be With is re-issuing, but is easily their current favorite. "The Open Highway" is the appropriately-named opener, and immediately demonstrates Coppieters' dexterous interplay between piano and vibes in assured, joyous fashion. The shuffling bossa of "Sales Notes" is a jaw-dropper, well-mined by samplers with impeccable taste. The mellow head-nod drum-break that is "Funky Chimes" brilliantly demonstrates Coppieters' quiet majestic side with its slow-motion funk rhythm with beautifully reflective notes throughout. The upbeat and joyful "Cross Talk" closes out side A. Vibes and piano are definitely at the heart of the arrangement here. The quick cut movement of "Piano In Transit" is another gem, driven principally by piano but those vibes along for more than just the ride. On a more gentle, elegiac note, "To Shearing With Love" is a warm, slow, romantic piece in the style of George Shearing. It's plaintive and sublime. Piano Viberations is one of those rare library records the original description of which makes as much sense now as it did when it was first released. Piano and vibes with rhythm indeed. Be With has worked with the hallowed KPM to re-issue ten of our favorites from across the KPM 1000 Series and the Themes International Music catalogue, currently under KPM stewardship. HAWKSHAW/BRIAN BENNETT, ALAN Synthesis LP
Be With Records presents a reissue of Alan Hawkshaw and Brian Bennett's Synthesis, originally released in 1974. The "vivid contemporary sounds for a fresh visual image" make up the now-canonized Synthesis. These two greats go deep; the end result is a synth concept record of sorts. It's an essential companion piece to their Synthesizer And Percussion LP (1974). Like most of Be With's favorite library records, Synthesis has that gloriously funky "weird electronic music" vibe without ever being inaccessible. With the ARP Odyssey at the fore, Hawkshaw and Bennett have created a blissed-out soundscape laid back in all the right places and somehow also heavy on the funk. It's a throbbing, proto-G-Funk sound that's found on many of these low-lit basement workouts. Take the ice-cool "Alto Glide", a sunset-funk highlight with an electro-flute refrain that conjures those dreamier Dre/DJ Quick instrumentals from '91 to '92. Stereolab, Koushik and all those Ghost Box artists were clearly listening closely. The equally relaxed "Mermaid" glides effortlessly with soft, shimmering piano, understated percussion and kaleidoscopic synths. With these two soft-focus closing tracks allowing the LP to float away over the horizon, the preceding ten tracks have a more insistent, neck-snapping rhythm section to back the synth overload. Highlights include the head-nod funk of "Getting It Together" and the synth break in "The Executive", which informed classic video game soundtracks. For once Be With really is stuck for words to describe just how good this record is; best just to listen. Be With has worked with the hallowed KPM to re-issue ten of our favorites from across the KPM 1000 Series and the Themes International Music catalogue, currently under KPM stewardship. PARKER, ALAN The Sound Of Soul LP
Be With Records presents a reissue of Alan Parker's The Sound Of Soul, originally issued in 1976. When Parker recorded the killer library soul-funk LP The Voice of Soul (BEWITH 048LP, 2018) with session vocalist Madeline Bell in 1976, some bright spark at Themes decided to also release all of the backing tracks as a separate, and equally innocuously title LP called The Sound of Soul. Thank goodness for bright sparks. Released as a collection of "unobtrusive musical backings in various rhythmic styles", the LP's original description dryly explains "these tracks have been issued without melody and are therefore particularly suitable for use behind commentary." Bell was backed by The Rhythm Section, who were for all intents and purposes the Themes International Music house band. So what here is presented here is an entire album of instrumental work-outs by a band comprised of the formidable talents of Alan Hawkshaw on keyboards, Parker on guitars, Barry Morgan on drums, Les Hurdle on bass guitar, and Frank Ricotti on percussion. Without Bell's vocals these backing tracks are given all the room they need to breathe; each one more than stands up on its own. The Sound Of Soul is a real diggers' delight and, a must-have counterpart to The Voice Of Soul. Be With has worked with the hallowed KPM to re-issue ten of our favorites from across the KPM 1000 Series and the Themes International Music catalogue, currently under KPM stewardship. PARKER & MADELINE BELL, ALAN The Voice of Soul LP
Be With presents a reissue of Alan Parker and Madeline Bell's The Voice of Soul, originally issued in 1976. Veteran library musician Parker recorded with session vocalist Bell for his Themes International Music label and the result was The Voice of Soul. The sensational uptempo dancer "That's What Friends Are For" is probably the most well-known track on the record, and is a big hit on the rare groove scene, but it is by no means an anomaly. The Voice of Soul is essentially a perfect, sophisticated soul album with heaps of swagger and sass from beginning to end. Its once generic-sounding title is now deservedly definitive; the whole LP oozes sex. It oozes sex so much that it could have soundtracked a period porn film. Indeed, parts of it did. "Love Is All" and "You've Got What It Takes" both featured on the infamously banned Pretty Peaches (1976). As is usual with library records, The Voice of Soul was hard to get even when it was first released; it's next to impossible now. So here's an opportunity to own what is one of the finest rare soul albums of the late '70s, and a superb example of Bell's superlative vocal talents. But that's not the whole story; all of the backing tracks from The Voice of Soul were concurrently released as The Sound of Soul (BEWITH 047LP, 2018); Be With couldn't re-issue one without re-issuing the other. Be With has worked with the hallowed KPM to re-issue ten of our favorites from across the KPM 1000 Series and the Themes International Music catalogue, currently under KPM stewardship. CLARKE, JAMES Mystery Movie LP
Be With Records presents a reissue of James Clarke's Mystery Movie, originally released in 1974. Mystery Movie was originally billed as "modern, small group compositions in various moods. Ideally suited to the new Americanized style of T.V. and cinema film where music is used to create the mood and carry the action". So this collection covers a lot of bases, but it does so brilliantly and has absolutely no right to be such a fantastic listen from start to finish. Mystery Movie is best known for the slick drum breaks underpinning the top-notch jazz-funk chase theme "Car Patrol", the fuzz riffing and ARP soloing of "The Heavies" and the slow-mo strut of "Mystery Moll". "Study In Fear" and "Empty Streets" are horror soundtrack fodder of the finest sort. However, it's the understated, plaintive pieces that are the most rewarding. Ambient feels and strung-out fried-folk treats, full of cyclical naïve melodies, this is music that evokes the "downlifting" Ronnie Lane and Ron Wood instrumentals from their great Mahoney's Last Stand (1976), as well as the beautiful soundtrack work of Jack Nitzsche and Ry Cooder. One might also recognize "Waiting Game" from being sampled by melodic downbeat masters Express Rising. Check "Relaxed Theme", "Quiet Girl", "Routine Procedure" and "Quietness Sustained" for a melodic, melancholic set, with the last three performed on just acoustic guitar and harp. Be With has worked with the hallowed KPM to re-issue ten of our favorites from across the KPM 1000 Series and the Themes International Music catalogue, currently under KPM stewardship. HAWKSHAW/BRIAN BENNETT, ALAN Synthesizer and Percussion LP
Be With Records present a reissue of Alan Hawkshaw and Brian Bennett's Synthesizer and Percussion, originally released in 1974. Released in the same year as Synthesis (BEWITH 046LP, 2018) on KPM, 1974's Synthesizer and Percussion is its companion piece. "This record features the many distinctive sounds of the ARP Synthesizer plus percussion in various moods and tempos" is the even-more-underwhelming-than-usual library record sales pitch for Hawkshaw and Bennett's second collection of what is basically minimal G-funk, with overtones of primitive acid house. This is ridiculously good. Synthesizer and Percussion is one of Hawkshaw and Bennett's wilder joints and eons ahead of its time. Bennett's tough drums provide the underpinnings for the prominent bass, keys and bubbling synths high up in the mix, alongside Hawkshaw's deranged clavinet-funk-rock. There are heavenly break loops galore. Opener "Mon Amour" is ultra-smooth funk, all inter-weaving melodic lines whilst the seminal "Oddball" is an incredible hard electro strut with a knocking break. "Mile High Swinger" is a tranquil Spaghetti Western whistling theme over double tempo rhythmic movement and the pulsating "Auto Pilot" has a percussive groove elevated by electric piano and synthesizer. Check "Driving Force", "Home Run" and "Pacesetter" for electroid prog-funk dripped in acid squelch. All five final tracks are beatless synth workouts, because they can. These records were never readily available, being originally released as a ready-made, affordable alternative to commissioning music for television and radio. Consequentially the originals have been unobtainable for decades by all but the most dedicated collectors. The audio for all ten re-issues comes from the original analog tapes and has been remastered for vinyl by Be With regular Simon Francis. The same care has been taken with the sleeves, handing the reproduction duties over to Richard Robinson, the current custodian of KPM's brand identity. 180 gram vinyl.

HAWKSHAW/BRIAN BENNETT, ALAN Full Circle LP
Alan Hawkshaw (piano/Hammond) and Shadow's drummer Brian Bennett are responsible for some of the slickest, funkiest and most sought-after library records ever made in the UK, particularly ones recorded on the legendary KPM label. Their work has now become the go-to place for sampling in music today. Artists such as Dilla, Nas, and the xx, right through to the billion-selling Kanye and Drake have taken Hawkshaw's and Bennett's immaculate beat-driven soundscapes for their own usage. Their new album, Full Circle, in a full, iconic KPM cover, is a return to the laidback jazz-funk that helped Alan and Brian demonstrate their library chops. The album is classic Hawkshaw/Bennett. It swings, it grooves, moves, and thrills with a flair these two have perfected over years. Standout tracks such as "Hole In One", "In The Clouds", "Interchange", "Oasis", "On The Nile" and "Corcovado" are no mere excursions in nostalgia, for they carry lots of deft studio work for which many a producer would give their right arm. Hawkshaw's arrangements allow the drums, guitar, bass, strings, Hammond, flute and brass to swirl elegantly around the 12 original tracks; a masterclass in recording. Cut by Pete Norman, housed in a beautifully designed Richard Robinson sleeve and pressed by Record Industry in Holland, this release has been afforded the care and attention it rightly deserves. Essential. 180 gram vinyl.

Venezuela's electronic legend Cardopusher is back on Boynoize Records with the first of a two-part EP. The slow, twisted opener is "Broadcast Signal Intrusion", which has haunting bass and crashing hits over heavy drums. Then "Blood & Pain" picks up the pace with electro drums and contorted metallic synths. Slowing things down to a crawl is the masterful "How Deep Is Your Love" with its distorted bass and icy hits. The brain-frying "Subjected To Disintegration" has haunting sounds, shadowy bass, and an emerging dubby groove. "Temporary Forever" is a dirty, rough-edged electro track with stiff bass and edgy chords.

GOEYVAERTS, KAREL Karel Goeyvaerts LP
Repressed, 2013 release. Karel Goeyvaerts is the first collection of some of Karel Goeyvaerts' ultra-rare vinyl releases. This music was previously unavailable away from its original vinyl release. Goeyvaerts was born in Antwerp in 1923. After having received a humanistic education in Antwerp, he took courses at the Lemmens Institute in Malines. From 1943 until 1947 he studied at the Royal Flemish Conservatoire of Antwerp. From 1947 until 1950 he studied composition with Darius Milhaud, music analysis with Olivier Messiaen and was in addition the pupil of Maurice Martenot at the Conservatoire National in Paris. In 1949 he was awarded the Second Prize for Composition and the Lili Boulanger Prize at the same Conservatoire. He obtained the Halphen Prize in 1950. During the winter of 1950-51, he wrote the Sonata For Two Pianos. Because of its decisive and total stylistic novelty he designated this work as "Composition No 1", thus rejecting all his former work. With this sonata, he created a structural synthesis of the dodecaphonic system of Anton Webern and the teachings of Messiaen and laid the foundations for generalized "punctual" serialism. He demonstrated the application of this technique on the electronic medium in his compositions 4, 5 and 7. During the period 1951-1956, he influenced directly through personal contact and intensive correspondence the musical creativity of Karlheinz Stockhausen, whom he met during the summer-courses of 1951 in Darmstadt. In 1953, Goeyvaerts and Stockhausen produced the first electronic music in the studio of the NWDR in Cologne. In 1970 the BRT appointed him as producer at the Institute Of Psychoacoustics And Electronic Music (IPEM) in Ghent. Beginning in 1974 he was in charge of the New Music productions for BRT-3 in Brussels. Goeyvaerts received several awards, such as the Koopal Prize in 1967 and the Visser-Neerlandia Prize in 1969. He also was given commissions by the BRT, the Festival of Flanders and the NOS (Nederlandse Omroepstichting). His works have been performed in several European countries, in Canada, the United States, Japan and at the festivals of the International Society for Contemporary Music (ISCM) in Brussels 1950, Oslo 1953, Graz 1972, and Bonn 1977.

DOYLE, ROGER Oizzo No LP
Cacophonic presents a reissue of experimental Irish avant-garde and electroacoustic innovator Roger Doyle's Oizzo No, originally self-released in 1975. This manifesto of outsider orchestrations, teenage symphonies and cultivated concrete is Doyle's debut album. A pianist and composer, Doyle was also an improvisational jazz drummer with a penchant for experimentation that would marginalize him from traditional seats of learning in his native homeland but embrace him to the bosom of Europe's leading forward-thinking research centers for electronic and computer music. Here he would piece together two highly sought-after experimental albums before returning home to channel his multi-disciplinary work ethic into the agit-pop theatrical company Operating Theatre and play a leading role in the burgeoning Irish new wave scene as an early signing to U2's Mother Records. Oizzo No is a collection of some of Doyle's earliest works as an indomitable scholarship student of composition at the Royal Irish Academy Of Music in Dublin and then as founding member and drummer of experimental jazz rock outfit Jazz Therapy (who would later become Supply Demand & Curve). This patchwork 1975 debut draws from what was an already bulging portfolio that included academic assignments, living room compositions and soundtrack collaborations with Irish filmmakers. Originally part-recorded and subsequently aborted when the would-be label vanished without trace overnight, Oizzo No was shelved indefinitely until a scholarship at the prestigious Institute Of Sonology at the University Of Utrecht in Holland afforded Doyle not only the opportunity to partially revise his humble opus in their state-of-the-art studios (as well as those of the EMS Studios in Stockholm) but also the money to press a limited run of 500 copies and help further cement the foundations of his future status as one of Ireland's leading and most versatile contemporary composers.

STOCKHAUSEN, KARLHEINZ Adventures In Sound 3CD
"No composer had a greater appetite for revolution than Stockhausen, who was embarking on a quest that would occupy him for more than half a century, and which would take in a whole gamut of constantly re-defined objectives - among them 'point music', 'spatial music' and 'multi-formula composition'. His early electronic compositions such as the Studies were painstakingly and meticulously constructed using magnetic tape, to be followed over the ensuing decade by the works which ranked among the masterpieces of electronic music, Gesang der Ju?nglinge (Song of the Youths) and Kontakte (Contacts). All of these unprecedented early electronic works are included in this three CD box set presentation which also incorporates such visionary creations of intellect and sensitivity as Pierre Boulez' orientally flavored Le Marteux Sans Maitre, recorded under the baton of Robert Craft, Xenakis' brilliant explorations of the dramatic and coloristic properties of Concre?te sound, Poe?me e?lectronique, Edgard Vare?se's extraordinary response to a commission from Le Corbusier for music for the pavilion of the 1958 Brussels World Fair, and Ligeti's 'conversation without words', Artikulation, alongside the audacious Cartridge Music, for 'amplified small sounds' constructed by John Cage, using phonograph cartridges inserted with feathers, lengths of wire, toothpicks, pipe cleaners, small twigs, wire coils and nails to make audible otherwise indiscernible sounds."

CLOUDS Heavy The Eclipse 3LP
The records stop four hundred years in the future, after the lines shut, and the corporation withdrew. What you know of how you got here is pieced together by the fragments of the rail maps and corporate orders that survive. After numerous waves of social collapse, Glasgow, a once prosperous city thriving off an industry of trade and shipbuilding, had run to waste in lawless ruin. The land passed into the hands of new owners; a German-speaking conglomerate, who incorporated it into a new civic entity: Neurealm. There were grand promises of a new age; a rail network, culture facilities, new life for the city. Neurealm never came to be. The violent indifference of the citizens to the new order saw to that. In its place a rats' nest of horror and gloom, the damp ruins punctuated by strobe lights, and the desperate, ecstatic violence of the gangs that rule it. Welcome to Neurealm, After The Fall. Ravaged and warped breakbeats haunted by wailing euphoric noise, vivid and graphic reflections of fractured post-industrial hardcore, moments of poetry flashing within a thick impending fog. This is our soundtrack. A unique and visionary achievement; a wholly original future of beauty and despair: brutal, gritty, alive and urgent, blooming in the ruins, spiraling and raw, howling with life. Embossed gatefold cover with printed inner sleeves.

DEODATO/OS CATEDRATICOS, EUMIR Ataque LP
LP version. 180 gram vinyl; Includes download code. Far Out Recordings presents a reissue of Eumir Deodato's Ataque, originally released in 1965. One of Brazil's most prolific artists, Deodato has racked up 16 platinum albums, won a Grammy (and been nominated for two more), and sold over 250 million records in the USA alone. After moving from Rio de Janeiro to New York in the late 60's, Deodato would work as a composer, arranger, producer and keyboardist on nearing 500 records, under his own name and with the likes of Aretha Franklin, Earth Wind, and Fire, Frank Sinatra, Kool & The Gang, George Benson, Tom Jobim, and Bjork, to name a just a few. Before that, a young Deodato had already cemented his status in Brazil as one of the country's top musical minds. In the mid-sixties, when he wasn't working with the likes of Roberto Menescal, Joao Donato, and Marcos Valle, Deodato recorded a string of albums with his lesser known instrumental samba jazz and bossa nova ensemble Os Catedráticos. A masterpiece of hip Brazilian swing, Ataque reflects the deeper, groovier side of that magical, hazy sound of sixties Rio, with monster samba grooves backing big brass arrangements and scorching organ solos. Amongst Deodato's own tracks, there are compositions by Marcos & Paulo Sergio Valle, Baden Powell, and Luiz Bonfa, arranged for a big horn section, which includes trombone player Edson Maciel, and is given an extra dose of cool from the inimitable drums of Wilson Das Neves and Ruebens Bassini on percussion. An elusive album in the canon of killer, groovy Brazilian music, with vinyl copies near-impossible to find for less than three digits, Ataque finally gets the official Far Out reissue treatment in being remastered from the original tapes. Now available for the first time outside of South America. Personnel: Eumir Deodato - leader, arrangements, conductor; Maurílio Santos - trumpet; Walter Rosa - tenor sax; Aurino Ferreira - baritone sax; Edson Maciel - trombone; Ruebens Bassini - congas, pandeiro; Humberto Garin - guiro; Jorginho Arena - congas; Sergio Barroso - baixos; Wilson Das Neves - drums; Geraldinho Vespar - guitar.

COLLETTE, NED Old Chestnut 2LP
"We were introduced to the music of Ned Collette by guitarist Julia Reidy, another Melbourne ex-pat currently based in Europe. Julia's word is good as gravy around here, so we checked out Ned's new work and were blown clean out of our socks. Old Chestnut is a haunting prog-folk song cycle for the ages. Ned's approach to voice and guitar resemble various models at various times. You'll hear smatterings of Leonard Cohen, Lou Reed, Pip Proud in lyrics and phrasing, but these are always just spices, added to the beautifully melancholic vistas Ned arrays before our ears. On the epic track, 'June,' there is a piano part by Chris Abrahams (of The Necks) so perfect in its conception it stops time. Working with longtime drum partner, Joe Talia, and a few other guests, Collette has made a goddamn whale of an album. The songs are brilliant, the arrangements have an addictively sparse genius, and the production is so full and delicate it reminds us of folks like Jim O'Rourke, Van Dyke Parks and Roger Waters. We are strangely unfamiliar with the bulk of Ned's previous recordings, but it doesn't really feel like it matters that much. With an album as strong as Old Chestnut, his history restarts here." --Byron Coley Edition of 300.

BRAINWALTZERA Poly-Ana 2x12"
Repressed; 2x12" version. Scented gatefold sleeve, relief varnish; 140 gram vinyl. Brainwaltzera's debut album Poly-Ana follows quickly on the heels of the producer's Aescoba EP (FILM 006EP, 2017). Across thirteen tracks of both previously released material and fresh excursions into the artist's world, Brainwaltzera explores sounds ranging from luscious, downtempo grooves and expertly reduced brain-dance cuts with nods to early '90s experimental IDM to harder, more caustic outings, all bound together by a recurring theme of otherworldly ambience. Taking its name from a variety of sources dear to the artist, including polyphonic analog synthesizers and the Pollyanna principle itself -- a theory that suggests individuals recall pleasurable experience more acutely than displeasing ones -- the title represents a meeting point in the artistic process between creative method and conceptual choices. Production techniques range from more traditional hardware synthesis to the incorporation of a modified dot matrix printer acting as a modulation source for MIDI parameters. Sample sources include VHS material from the producer's own childhood and ambient Bullet Train samples from a production session traveling from Tokyo to Kyoto. According to the enigmatic producer, memory and its fundamental role in the human experience is one of the central themes of the record. While the artist's own experiences shaped the sound of the record, there is no attempt to impose them on the listener through blatant exposition. A particular stimulus, such as sound or scent, can transport an individual back to a particular point in their life. Scent has long been identified as the most efficient agent for this phenomenon, providing perhaps the most visceral form of "brain travel". With this in mind, a unique fragrance was engineered by creative director Mario Lombardo's Atelier Oblique brand, exclusively for the album's physical release. This was designed to act as a vehicle to assist the listener in retaining the first experience of hearing the record and to act as a future trigger, transporting the individual back to that moment. Brainwaltzera's work has quickly found plaudits amongst a host of industry tastemakers and artists alike -- not least Aphex Twin himself, who has appeared sporadically online with comments praising the music via his now infamous user18081971 SoundCloud account. Mature and wonderfully executed, Poly-Ana represents some of the finest recent work within the genre, and yet another noteworthy addition to the FILM discography.

BROWN, BOBBY Don't Be Cruel LP
2018 repress. "When Bobby Brown left New Edition at the peak of their fame in 1986 he was staying true to his rules of 'really not giving a damn' and doing what felt right to him. And while his solo debut King of Stage (1986) wasn't bad, it wasn't what fans were really yearning for - 'Hopefully he just goes back to New Edition' one fan wrote in a 1987 issue of Word Up! magazine. Little did we all know by the time King of Stage was dying down he was already hard at work on the follow up, Don't Be Cruel, and no one was prepared for what was coming. Don't Be Cruel was immediately a smash hit, to any naysayers this was the punch in the face, to NE fans this was a game changer, and honestly to many this was their first time hearing him. Don't Be Cruel crafted the perfect match of amazing songwriting and the newly christened new jack swing sound that was flooding the streets. Bobby Brown proved why he was 'good to go solo' as he owned each track on this album. The new 'King of R&B' was here. The album's singles: 'Don't Be Cruel,' 'My Perogative,' 'Every Little Step' & 'Roni,' all were number one singles. 'Rock Wit'cha' made all other R&B ballads at the time pale in comparison. The album was one of the best-selling albums of the '80s (number 33 to be exact)."

NORTHERNER End Of The Holiday LP
Martin Cummings, aka Northerner, debuted in 2008 with There'll Be Other Holidays and ten years later returns to similar themes with his third album for Home Assembly, End Of The Holiday. Influenced by travels through the Catalan region of Spain, the album finds Cummings at his most reflective and sonorous. The electronic ticks of his earlier I Am On Your Side (2012) have been pared back somewhat but instead fit neatly in and around his expressive guitar playing. It's hard to talk about a Northerner album without mentioning Vini Reilly. The shadow of the Durutti Column guitarist hangs softly over the eight pieces here. The opening track "Principi" sets the tone with gliding atmospherics, exquisite arpeggios and understated beats, followed by the sweetly melancholic "Final D'Estiu" which ups the tempo and beefs up the rhythms until "Dijous", with its shuffling "bossamba" flow, cements the album's Balearic appeal. But there are other influences at play here too; something of Emeralds guitar whiz Mark McGuire can be heard in the intricate guitar embellishments and cavernous, brooding tension of "Nomes Jo". Elsewhere, the dusty bump of "Una Nocio" conjures up hazy memories of early evening, poolside liveners and the widescreen ambience of "Arribant Al Final" could be the soundtrack to an arid coastal drive. But before one starts getting a bit too holiday brochure, End Of The Holiday is an album for reflection, for change, an all instrumental ode to half-remembered summers, a sound collage of a faded July postcard, and a reminder of warmer climes, long summer days recollected fondly, as autumn slides into winter. Sometimes electronic track titles give away a lot, sometimes less so. In the case of Vester Koza's loader mither they are a set-up for what is to come. In their easy humor and northern slang, these tracks tell you this is something very human, very immediate, and rooted in rave/club culture too. But there's also a poetry to them, whether it's mysterious lyrical or directly emotive. As complex melodies unwind and develop throughout, one can hear that rare sense of being allowed into someone's inner life, following complex but very relatable emotional narratives, as they tangle around each other and emerge with fresh understanding and fresh ideas, drawing one back to this album again and again.

VA The Black Book 3LP
Joachim Nordwall marks 20 years of his iDEAL label with The Black Book, a blinding sweep of original material from JASSS, Stephen O'Malley, Ramleh, Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe, Carlos Giffoni & Prurient, Ectoplasm Girls, JH1.FS3, JS Aurelius, Autumns, John Duncan, and many more. The story of iDEAL starts out in London 1998, when Nordwall was living the hardscrabble life: working in an underwear shop near Liverpool Street station; living in a filthy Bayswater apartment; scoring industrial records from the Music and Video Exchange; getting drunk in cheap pubs, and dreaming of starting a new record label and platform. He called it iDEAL, and 180 releases, 20 years later, it has become an invaluable node for non-standard, wayward expressions of modern electronic noise in all its mutable variation. iDEAL's success and longevity may well be down to the way that Nordwall treated it as a social and artistic home, offering a place where mutually exclusive styles could bed down away from the mainstream or the genre police, and feed into a much larger, work-in-progress definition of fringe music. The Black Book extends, in the spirit of the label, an idealized compilation of disparate possibilities connected by a sense of musical mystery and chaotic energy. To focus on just a few highlights, the ever unpredictable JASSS makes a notable inclusion with the serene vignette of LP opener, "Parental Youth", while Jim O'Rourke unfurls 17 minutes of gloaming post-industrial drone with "In Regards". Label friend Jonathan Uliel Saldanha contributes the tense, searching horns of "Siren Frontier", and Ectoplasm Girls cook up the grim, thrumming electronics of "Neuropean". John Duncan parses the airwaves to find the curdling organism of "Shortwave6", and Frederikke Hoffmeier (Puce Mary) and Jesse Sanes seduce with the narcotic drone-pop of "At The Bottom Of The Night" as JH1.FS3, alongside a powerful rhythmic oddity from Stephen O'Malley, a stark death rattle from Trepaneringsritualen as Týr × Reið × Vend with "nd þau né átto, óð þau né hfðo", and Norn Iron's Autumns "Lose It" on a mucky acid 'floor swill. Cover design by Philip Marshall, mastered and cut by Matt Colton at Alchemy. Also features: Pact Infernal, Vanity Productions, Mokira, Dungeon Acid, Coppice, and Drew St Ivany.

BLAKEY AND THE JAZZ MESSENGERS, ART Live In Moers 1976 2LP
Double LP version. 180 gram vinyl; gatefold sleeve. Art Blakey And The Jazz Messengers' Live In Moers 1976 is an original master concert recording from Moers Jazzfestival (Germany) retrospectively released for the first time in 2016. Live In Moers 1976 is a part of the WDR's The Cologne Broadcasts series, executively produced by jazz historian Dr. Bernd Hoffmann. Both formats include musician credits and liner notes by journalist and radio host Karsten Mützelfeldt in English and German. Arthur "Art" Blakey (October 11, 1919-October 16, 1990) was an American jazz drummer and bandleader who made a name for himself in the 1940s in the big bands of Fletcher Henderson and Billy Eckstine. He then worked with bebop musicians Thelonious Monk, Charlie Parker, and Dizzy Gillespie. In the mid-1950s, Horace Silver and Blakey formed the Jazz Messengers, a group that the drummer was associated with for the next 35 years. Blakey was inducted into the Down Beat Jazz Hall of Fame (in 1981), the Grammy Hall of Fame (in 1998 and 2001), and was awarded the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2005. He was inducted into the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame in 1991. The Biographical Encyclopedia of Jazz calls the Jazz Messengers "the archetypal hard bop group of the late '50s". COUNT BASIE BIG BAND Live in Berlin 1963 2LP
Double LP version. Count Basie Big Band's Live In Berlin 1963 is an original master concert recording from Sportpalast Berlin. Live In Berlin 1963 is a release in the WDR The Cologne Broadcasts series produced by jazz historian Dr. Bernd Hoffmann. William James "Count" Basie (August 21, 1904-April 26, 1984) is an American jazz pianist, organist, bandleader, and composer. In 1935, Basie formed his own jazz orchestra, the Count Basie Orchestra, and in 1936 took them to Chicago for a long engagement and their first recording. He led the group for almost 50 years, creating innovations like the use of two "split" tenor saxophones, emphasizing the rhythm section, riffing with a big band, using arrangers to broaden their sound, and others. WDR (West German Broadcasting Cologne) is the German public broadcasting institution based in the Federal State of North Rhine- Westphalia with its main office in Cologne. Engineered by Franz-Josef Schwarz and re-mastered by Dirk Franken, both formats include musician credits and liner notes by journalist and radio host Karsten Mützelfeldt in English and German.

VA A New Life, Vol. II: Independent and Regional Jazz in Great Britain 1968-1988 2LP
Double LP version. Gatefold sleeve with liners notes and pictures; Includes download card. Jazzman Records deliver A New Life, Vol. II: Independent and Regional Jazz in Great Britain 1968-1988, continuing their series of under-heard jazz from the UK. It's been three years since Jazzman's A New Life (JMAN 075CD/LP, 2015) alerted jazz heads to the existence of an unknown world of British jazz private pressings and indie obscurities. Back for a second round, compilers Francis Gooding and Duncan Brooker have dug deep into the archives to assemble another ground-breaking collection of Brit jazz anomalies and outliers from the 1970s and 1980s. A New Life, Vol. II picks up the story where A New Life left off, searching out overlooked jazz gems from across the length and breadth of the British Isles. When the major labels and the record industry left jazz out in the cold, musicians and jazz enthusiasts took the initiative. Indie labels made space for established artists and experimental outsiders alike, while local groups and youth bands turned to private pressings to document their music and build their own scenes. From London blues renegade Billy Jenkins's spiritual tribute to Pharoah Sanders and the swinging vocal artistry of Belfast-born Gerry McClelland, to the thunderous big band sound of Leicester's Music Explosion and the modal drama of the Don Rendell Five, A New Life, Vol. II reveals another fascinating layer of forgotten Brit jazz history. Fully researched and presented with in depth liner notes, Jazzman Records again brings you the unheard, unorthodox and under-rated sound of the British jazz underground! Also features: Frank Evans, Hotpoints, Inner Ear, RedBrass, Big Sun, Midland Youth Jazz Orchestra, Robert Shaw & the Dick Hawdon Quintet, Big Baffle, and Pat Crumly Sextet.

RAPOON Little Rocketman And The Planet That Moved CD
"All-new album by Robin Storey aka Rapoon. Founded in 1992 after Storey left Zoviet France, Rapoon soon became an outstanding ethno-dark ambient project that has gained a cult following all over the world. More than 50 albums have been released over those 25 years, some more beat-driven, others more playful and with ambient sounds and ethnic influences. Rapoon has never stopped evolving - think of Cultural Forgeries, an album full of unplugged acoustic music. Or Downgliding, full of compositions on the piano. Little Rocket Man was inspired by the political situation in 2018 and is classic Rapoon. Heavy beats meet drone soundscapes, long evolving tracks make up this new album."

SCHULZE, KLAUS Cocooning CD
'Re-release of the sought-after Klaus Schulze album 'Cocooning', previously released as part of the strictly limited and long exhausted 5CD Boxset Contemporary Works II (2002). Track 'Easy Listening' is well-defined by the relaxed loops of Tom Dams and the filigree guitar play of Michael 'Mickes' Luecker. The mysterious sounding 'And She Is Kind And Gently' don't need any rhythm -- a dialogue between Klaus and Tobias Becker, whose oboe and English horn is pleasing the ear on almost all Cocooning tracks. The third track 'I Just Have To Sing My Hymns' brings back further well known companions of Klaus Schulze: singer Julia Messenger and Thomas Kagermann on violin, flute and vocals. The last five songs are a song connected cycle of 'It Still Is Now', 'Blowin' Thru The High Grass', 'Many Dreams Have Faded In', 'Many Fears Have Vanished' and 'As Years Went By'. A worthily and impressive continuance of 'Easy Listening' full of atmosphere. The title Cocooning is program and coats the listener into soft sounds and relaxed rhythms - real 'easy listening' without getting fiddling or even boring. Another pearl from the huge Schulze Cosmos."

MADLIB Pinata Beats 2LP
2018 repress. Double LP version. "There are few musicians - let alone beat-makers - in the world whose output in its raw form provides his listener with a full on musical experience before anything is added. Madlib is such a talent. Hip hop is his canvas, but he creates the most wondrous things with it. Before a microphone is switched on, before a rhyme is even uttered, a Madlib beat stands alone as a complete thing. Since the issue of the collaborative album with rapper Freddie Gibbs - Piñata, already being hailed as contender for rap album of the year - we've been asked countless times to issue the beats Madlib created for the project as instrumentals. And we've conceded. Piñata put Gibbs in the spotlight, one that a growing audience is finally acknowledging that he deserves. On Piñata Beats, though, it's Madlib, quietly spinning on the center stage. Through seventeen cuts of arcane film snippets, dusted funk and soul, psych and prog rock musical diversions, Madlib proves to live up to what Gibbs once said of him: 'Madlib quite simply, is music.'"

Following multiple classic re-issues, Mania Dub now bring you a long awaited freshly produced album by UK dub innovators Alpha & Omega, Dubplate Selection Vol. 3. As the duo explains, "We have always done alternative mixes for sound systems. We had enough good ones to make an album so that's why we released Dubplate Selection Vol. 1 (1995). As we released more albums we had more dubplates to release. We've had a long gap but after our recent releases we felt it was about time for Dubplate Selection Vol. 3. It includes mixes from the last three albums". UK dub pioneers since 1990, Alpha & Omega have worked with the likes of Greensleeves, Lee 'Scratch' Perry, Jah Shaka, and Gregory Isaacs. Alpha & Omega are a roots dub duo that mix both analog and digital elements, comprising Christine Woodbridge and John Sprosen, both of whom had played in reggae bands previously, Sprosen also having worked with the Roaring Lion Sound System. They began working together in the mid-1980s, splitting their time between their home towns of London and Plymouth, and issued their debut home-recorded cassette in 1988. They were picked up by Greensleeves Records, who acted as a parent company to the duo's A&O label, and also worked with Jah Shaka, for whom they supplied rhythm tracks. The howling "Wolf" kicks things off on a pounding yet playful note with its hooting synths and behemoth kicks, whilst "Broken Motor" sinks you into an obsessive swirl of lysergic arpeggios and rattling drums on automatic fire. VA Test Pressing II LP
Ukrainian label Muscut celebrates its anniversary with Test Pressing II, its tenth record. The first release, Test Pressing, was published in 2012 on 7". Like six years ago, the current title is a compilation of Muscut's resident producers, as well as new friends of the label. Test Pressing II is a 12" on which there are exactly ten tracks; both sides are significantly different in the color of their mood. The compilation starts with dub-drone sketches from key figures in the Odessa underground Wildstyle Crew and Bryozone. Then comes the mantra-like "M2" - the work of the creative union of Nicola Ratti and Mads Emil Nielsen together with Nikolaenko. The Canadian sound-artist Mark Templeton continues the line of rhythmic textures crowned with unhurried percussion on his "Soft Education". The first side is completed by an exquisite curtsy from Andrew Pekler, "Underwater Nocturne", a soundtrack for the perfect tea ceremony. The second side confidently sets a completely different compilation rhythm from the very start; the tribal dance from the Berlin project Native Instrument instantly introduces a trance. It is followed by a warm, enveloping minimal synth track from the Ukrainian trio Nisantashi Primary School. The middle of the second side is decorated with the pensive house-ballad of St. Petersburg producer Fadeev, working as AEM Rhythm Cascade. Another Russian has settled next to him -- Muscovite Oleg Buyanov, aka OL, with the massive broken dub "Nutmeg". The final composition consists of burning Afro-synth motifs from luminary Odessan Vakula. Edition of 300.

SYNECTICS The Purple Universe 2LP
Musique Pour La Danse presents a double LP reissue of The Purple Universe, originally released in 1993 by Swiss duo Synectics (Marco Repetto and Stefan Riesen) on legendary braindance label Rephlex. Run by Richard D. James (Aphex Twin) and Grant Wilson-Claridge, this early release is one of Rephlex's best-kept secrets. The year is 1992. Electronic music is experiencing a golden age of sorts. Equipment, inspiration, people, and music are less and less tied to specific places and scenes. Repetto is driving in Bern, the car stereo locked on Radio Couleur 3. The Young Gods are being interviewed, and the pioneering Swiss industrial band mentions the word "psychedelic" enough times for the driver to take heed. Inspired by a magical performance by the same band, he decides to experiment by injecting a dose of psychedelia into his productions. The result is "The Final Moment", a 24-minute trip which began as a club track before turning into an ambient and yes, psychedelic tune, reminiscent of progressive rock forays but entirely synthetic. Repetto then meets Riesen, and the pair produce more tracks in the same vein. Some are resolutely geared towards the dance floor; others would not be out of place in a chill-out context. Demos are sent to labels with "The Final Moment" accidentally included in the package. Rephlex was enthused with all tracks on the release but was especially impressed by "The Final Moment" and released The Purple Universe soon after. This album is of course neither the first nor the only one to blend electronic music and psychedelia. However, its sincerity and candid approach are immensely touching, a reminder of the sort of naiveté and creativity prevalent in the pre-Internet era. It is ironic that a Swiss duo can be credited in part with writing the template for post-Detroit British techno, proto-IDM and braindance. But, it is not surprising either that this record was originally released by Rephlex, a very logical decision in hindsight. The Purple Universe is a versatile album, with a few club-ready bangers full of emotion, some more experimental cuts that feel both introspective and forward-thinking as well as "The Final Moment", a universe in itself and a masterpiece of sorts, an important artifact of a time where it became more and more obvious that electronic music and dance music did not have to be safe, straightforward or tame. Includes three tracks from original CD version, never available on vinyl before.

SIGLO XX Box CD
Onderstroom presents Box, a compilation of early material by Siglo XX. In 1978 a few friends started rehearsing and playing music together in a garage in Genk, an industrial and former mining town in Belgium. They called themselves Siglo XX. The group's name is Spanish for "Twentieth Century" and refers to a Bolivian mine named Siglo XX, where there was social unrest, so the link with the city of Genk was obvious. Genk also had to cope with social issues as unemployment, poverty and drug related problems after the closure of the coal mines. Siglo XX were Erik Dries (vocals), Antonio Palermo (guitar), Dirk Chauvaux (guitar, bass), Klaas Hoogerwaard (drums), Chris Nelis (synthesizer 1980-2), and Guido Bos (bass 1978-1984). Under the influence of the punk spirit coming from England, they wanted to make their music that expressed their feelings, emotions and views on society. Technical skills on musical instruments were only required to a lesser extent. In 1980 their debut 7" The Naked And The Death was released on their own independent label Straatlawaai Records. This single was followed by the release of a self-titled cassette in 1982. Shortly after they signed to Antler Records; this was the most important and prolific era of their existence. In the time span of a few years the band released two EPs and one mini-album: The Art Of War (1982), Answer (1983) and Dreams Of Pleasure (1983), containing 13 songs, which constitute the heart and soul of their oeuvre. Produced by label owner Roland Beelen, Siglo XX linger between cold wave, new wave and post punk. They were often named the Belgian Joy Division, which makes sense listening to their dark and gloomy sound, but they also experimented with strange sounds and incorporated these cleverly in their songs. "Listening back to the tracks such as 'The Art Of War', 'La Vie Dans La Nuit', 'Youth Sentiment', 'Autumn', 'Until A Day', and 'Endless Corridor', it still moves me and brings up memories of that exciting period in the eighties, when we were younger, living the life and listening to music that we associated with our life, our dreams, plans and expectations. A strong dance floor focus (see opening banger "New Chair") takes turns with more introspective moments, and the extraordinary journey taken by album centerpiece "Wizards Sleeve" acts as a microcosm for the whole collection, four sides of relentless invention during which no musical stone is left unturned. An expansive, involving album, by turns mature and charmingly immature, sparkling with inspiration yet fully focused, Controlled Hallucination is a perfect entry point into The Gasman's unique sonic vision, sure to delight long-term fans and new heads alike.

PARKER, EVAN The Snake Decides LP
Otoroku presents a reissue of Evan Parker's The Snake Decides, originally released in 1986. One of the final Incus releases and one that was written up in The Penguin Guide to Jazz as an essential document of modern music, Otoroku releases it as a first ever vinyl re-issue. Featuring four solos recorded in 1986 in St. Paul's Church, Oxford by the late Michael Gerzon, The Snake Decides is a groundbreaking example how far the language of a particular instrument can be taken. From Brian Morton's new liner notes: "The Snake Decides attracts a certain array of adjectives: intense, radical, fearsome, hypnotic, virtuosic, and occasionally allows a more ambitious reviewer to avoid platitude by talking more specifically about 32nd harmonics, circular breathing, multiphonics and Gerson's exact choice and placement of microphones. But this misses a point, too. Listening to this record, either for the first or the fortieth time, is an arousing experience." Remastered by Giuseppe Ielasi and housed in a reverse board sleeve, this is the ultimate document of one of the most important recordings in all Parker's extensive and exploratory catalog. Edition of 500.

DJ JAZZY JEFF M3 CD
DJ Jazzy Jeff's M3 is a memoir, love story, how-to manual and manifesto all in one. As a renowned DJ and producer, DJ Jazzy Jeff's career spans decades, genres, and generations. M3 is a reflection of that existence and his "declaration of independence". In the final installment of his Magnificent series, DJ Jazzy Jeff celebrates unhindered creativity. While staying true to his b-boy roots with classic boom bap drums, Jeff infuses a myriad of sounds that have influenced his production work over the years. The result is a cohesive mix of hip-hop, R&B, funk, jazz and house. For M3, DJ Jazzy Jeff brings extraordinary artists together to present a multigenerational perspective on life, love, the current state of society, and the music industry. The Trinity, comprised of Grammy and Oscar award-winning MC Rhymefest, Philadelphia MC Dayne Jordan, and multi-talented artist Uhmeer, serves as M3's primary storytellers. With three distinct styles, the trio is a group with an unprecedented flow and magical delivery. The Trinity lays bare the foundations of real hip-hop with tracks including "The Beginning", "Scars", and "Where You At." Things lighten up with feel-good tune "Skater's Paradise", and a tribute to womankind, "Stronger Than Me". And M3 wouldn't be complete without a few soulful voices. Singer/songwriter Aaron Camper provides his sultry sound to "Midnight Escapade" and "The Way We Cool", while Maimouna Youssef lends her soulful harmony to "Child of God," and Masego adds his signature trap-jazz flair to "2Step." For DJ Jazzy Jeff, M3 represents creative freedom and a feeling of empowerment that he hopes will "inspire fellow artists to maintain their independence and take charge of their own destiny".

MISHALLE & MAROCKIN' BRASS, LUC Beats & Pieces LP
After years of playing with the Moroccan community of Brussels, music maker and jazz musician Luc Mishalle knows every trick of the cross-fertilization of gnawa music, jazz, and brass. Gnawa is the northern African Islamic sufi music with healing vibrations and spiritual lyrics, played by the descendants of African slaves. Beats & Pieces is a collaboration with Belgian percussionist Roel Poriau (Think Of One, Antwerp Gipsy-Ska Orkestra), Tunisian electronic producer Sofyann Ben Youssef (Ammar808, Kel Assouf), and Moroccan-Belgian gnawa master Maalem Driss Filali. "The album is significantly less 'jazz' than past collaborations with Byron Wallen and Trevor Watts," explains Mishalle. "It's based on gnawa songs I transcribed and arranged together. Half of the songs contain vocals, which makes it more radio-friendly." There are also fragments of Beninese traditional music, which brings about another thread through the album: trance. One can find it in gnawa music and even more in Benin, the cradle of voodoo. "Trance music aims to create obsession through constant repetition. We kept the essence of that music, adding jazz and brass colors"; Mishalle finds these musicians in Brussels, and together they search for the sound of this city known for its hyper-diversity. "Brussels' context is unique, in Belgium and beyond. Our metropolis has quirky vibrations. To catch them, you have to fully submerge."

SMITH, STEFAN Stefan Smith 2LP
Stefan Smith has channeled an elevated reverence for process, texture and synth-extrapolation with the release of Stefan Smith on the Sapiens imprint. A relative new-comer to the land of rapid-fire releases and dance floor formulae, Smith is deeply steeped in the art of music creation, performance and theory. As a graduate of Mills College's revered music department, Smith's prosaic understanding of music partially explains his migration to Sapiens, a label headquartered in Paris, France, which, under the direction of techno luminary Agoria, has been expanding the realm of possibility for what a techno label can become. Collaborating with musicians, visual artists, film directors, shamans and sound designers, the young Sapiens platform releases may include "political speeches, radio hits, dance floor tunes, sensorial or cognitive music or a gentle computer virus". Smith's contribution will definitely fall on the more delicious end of this spectrum, having woven a synth-lover's dream tapestry. The nine tracks composing Stefan Smith draw the listener in on a river of oscillators, which push just past the banks of perceptible sound with with flawless production and loving sound treatment. The idea behind the album is very raw and organic. Smith focuses on atmosphere, mood, tones, and frequencies, rather than melodies. His productions are a response to the subliminal, and about feeling. This album came together from a natural flow of working with computers and synthesizers, and also from the musical connection fostered with Sebastien Devaud (Agoria). His approach to the album's production was to edit as little as possible, keeping the original feeling of chance and temporality intact. We can sense here Smith's intuition as sound designer, a role which has enabled him to work with artist Nicolas Becker and through this association further contribute work to Philippe Parreno's Anywhen exhibition at the Tate Modern Turbine Hall. The feedback generated by studio experimentation gives birth to new ideas for aural shapes and textures. If one were only to lie back and identify the various wave forms, like butterflies and birds flittering through dappled sunlight, in each track's canopy of bountiful synth elements the mind's eye would dance with the steady intervals of Smith's real-time probe of his machinery; however, deep tracts of emotion and effortless grooves won't allow for a purely sensory listen. In the spirit of exploration, enjoy the ride.

VA Discophilia Belgica: Next-door-disco & Local Spacemusic from Belgium 1975-1987 Part 1/2 2LP
Patrick, Raymond, Marianne, Roland, Kevin and Bert. These are among the most common and ordinary names in Belgium. Yet, these are also the names of some of the artists that appear of Discophilia Beligica, a 30-track compilation from groove-heavy record label SDBAN. Compiled by crate diggers Loud E and The Wild, Discophilia Beligica is a collection of next-door-disco and local space music from Belgium 1975-1987. The tracks on this delightfully obscure collection are from ordinary folk; most have day jobs. Yet as musicians, they go as far out as possible in to the disco universe. Not too serious or overambitious, definitely not overproduced. This is stripped-down space music, next-door disco. The choice of music is not a reflection of an actual 'scene'. In fact, most of the bands here have probably never performed live. The tracks on this compilation are the result of a decade of crate digging in flea markets, charity shops, and vinyl trades and picking out what might appeal to a contemporary dancefloor or to deranged and perhaps adventurous earbuds. That said, there's not many countries that can provide the wonderful diversity and weirdness of these sounds. Belgians have a great passion for music and there is an abundance of recording studios, impresarios, local radio stations and pressing plants. Bars and clubs sit side by side, providing a soundtrack for our ordinary lives and it's here where Patrick, Raymond, Roland or Marianne draw inspiration that led them into the studio and pick up a mic, a bass or synthesizer, making music to groove to, feel sexy to and be free.Features R. Roland, Carl Watson, Charles Vernon, Love Dream, Fancy, Marianne, Flame, Steve, Carl Candy and the Candy-Chicks, La Bush, System Love, Cora Corona, The Diskery and The Rogers. STEIGER Give Space CD
Ghent's Steiger are a piano trio, but not in the classical sense. With their versatile style, influenced by different musical genres such as jazz, rock, pop, classical, and electronic music, they try to find a balance between composition and improvisation through the use of experimentation and electronics. Considered pioneers of the Belgian jazz crossover scene, Steiger have been active for six years and have recently found themselves performing at major jazz venues in Flanders, picking up numerous accolades along the way. The trio's highly anticipated sophomore album Give Space was recorded at seven different locations, with the music composed to fit and fight these locations within a dialogue of acoustics, atmospheres and appetition. Field recordings, reverbs, and ambient sounds are all collected within the search for the unpredictable, given space within this dialogue as an essential part of the encounter. As a result, the locations emerge somewhat as a fourth member of the trio. The music, sometimes fixed, sometimes completely free, thus becomes an ever-changing journey into their multi-faceted world.

PAN-POT Weltlinie Remixes EP 2x12"
Coming in hot off the release of their recent Weltlinie EP, Pan-Pot return with four of their cohorts who have taken all five tracks from the original EP and reworked them into a bundle of stellar reworks of the originals on the Weltlinie Remixes EP. Kicking things off is Frankfurt legend Gregor Tresher who twists "Weltlinie" into a relentless, yet delirious venture with his signature brand of infectious grooves and floating atmospherics resulting in a timeless future classic. Up next you see Glasgow's own Gary Beck reshape not one but two tracks into fierce, heavy hitting techno bombs. Beck's first take is "Startphase" where he wastes no time in getting straight to the point as relentless, hi-pace percussion sets the tone for untamed aural animations sure to set the speakers on fire. Shlomi Aber steps to the plate next and serves up a stripped down, yet tough adaptation of "Exzentrisch" where percussion is king, emanating in a rowdy dancefloor detonation. Following is Poland's rising star DEAS who takes "Zeit" into sinister territories perfect for dark spaces and peak time encounters that will surely set the floor on fire. Wrapping up the EP is Beck's second attack with his rework of "Freigeist", and here we see him take a somewhat different approach where harmony and emotion take center stage as lush harmonics float over Beck's trademark high energy programming. No matter what your style of techno happens to be, we are sure you will find something here to satisfy aural obligations. Features remixes by Gregor Tresher, Gary Beck, Shlomi Aber, and DEAS.

AKITO Gone Again LP
Gone Again, Akito's debut album, moves from grimy saw waves to floating mesospheres, from broken two-step rhythms into hard percussion and dancehall, without ever feeling misplaced or forced, a perfect representation of a living interaction of influences. Spirals and sequences, escalating dizzily upwards and brutally crashing back down. A catalog of experiences and intensities is carved into these tracks. It's a story of staving off the comedown and stopping by the 24-hour off-license on the way to the next place, rolling over into day two, wondering if it's too late to ever reset the imbalance of a few years of extremes. But it also holds out the mad thrill of being able to reach and sustain those levels, of making it to the next city for another night, or cloud-watching on a long-haul plane deeply enough to forget that the escape is only going to be short-lived. Every time a moment of angst is released into the album, whether through a distorted, punishing tom or an unsettled, homeless melody, a burst of optimism recuperates it.

ZWERM Badminton In Tehran LP
Badminton In Tehran is Zwerm's first record in which all tracks are composed by Zwerm and it grooves like a Rube Goldberg-machine; DIY and slightly irregular. Zwerm is an electric guitar quartet based in Belgium and founded in 2007; its members are Toon Callier, Johannes Westendorp, Bruno Nelissen, and Kobe van Cauwenberghe. Over the years the group has collaborated with various composers, performers and visual artists. On Badminton In Tehran, all songs by Zwerm, and the album was produced by Rudy Trouvé. Zwerm has never strived for a one-sided artistic profile. During the past ten years the quartet has dallied among pure noise-improv, English renaissance music and contemporary composed music. The common denominator being not so much a particular stylistic view but rather a shared curiosity, Zwerms projects typically start with the question: 'what would happen if ...' Badminton In Tehran started with the question: 'what would happen if we would work with grooves for a few months?' After that, anything was allowed. The band created an online space where each member could drop personal demos, which could then be used freely by the others. Within a few months, a primordial soup of beats and grooves and little snippets of text was created. Once the recording sessions started, with producer Trouvé, this served as the raw material out of which ten new songs were crafted. Includes download.

AI MESSIAH Sentience & Sapience LP
A soundtrack for gutted metropolises, virtual sanctuaries and utopian enclaves, Ai Messiah's Sentience & Sapience is a seamless, psychedelic journey through possible near futures in the age of artificial intelligence. Its overlapping arrangements alternately evoke glittering digital realms and bleak, decrepit landscapes populated by ghostly natives drifting in fractured and multiplying realities. Eastern drones, processed guitars and field recordings are warped, dubbed to cassette and re-sampled again. Meditative gongs and bells punctuate the mix, as human-sounding voices drift in and out intoning synthetic chants. Digital and analog textures dissolve into a continuum, suggestive of blurred and vanishing boundaries between the natural and the artificial; the real and the simulated; the evolved and the designed.

ZETA, PILAR Moments of Reality 2LP
After years of working as a graphic artist, designer, and creative director, Pilar Zeta releases her debut album, Moments Of Reality on Ultramajic Records. Inspired by Japanese post-modern art from the 1980s and produced using synthesizers from the 1990s, this new age album of nine electronic pieces is ambient and cinematic with an off-world feeling. Her sound draws on the style of bands like Art of Noise and Steve Roach that she was exposed to early in her life and evokes the work of Yasuaki Shimizu, Yello, and Laurie Anderson. Each of the nine tracks will feature a cover with different objects in absurdist settings. In much the same way that Zeta's visuals seem to be artifacts from a parallel universe, Zeta's ethereal and melodic compositions sound like a coded language transmitting from a neighboring galaxy. Says the artist, "I feel privileged to be able to translate my visual world into sound; the unknown was the most fun and fascinating aspect of it." Fueled by a lifelong love of the paranormal, Zeta's metaphysical iconography and music exist in futuristic, surreal, and elegant spaces. Her visual and sonic works function as a form of practical magic in a machine-centric world, connecting different mediums through a singular, transcendent vision.

("I'm home" in Japanese) is Yano's fifth studio album and a synth-pop masterpiece, co-produced by her then husband Ryuichi Sakamoto and featuring all the musicians from Yellow Magic Orchestra (Haruomi Hosono, Yukihiro Takahashi, and Sakamoto), the group she was touring with at the time. Japan's best kept secret, Akiko Yano is one of the most ground-breaking artists to come out of the '70s Japanese music scene along with Haruomi Hosono and Ryuichi Sakamoto. A piano child prodigy, Yano started her solo recording career in 1976 at just 21, recording her debut album Japanese Girl with no less than Little Feat as the backing band. This album created a stir on the Japanese scene and Yano was on the map. She went on to record a series of superb albums mixing funk, electro, and city pop featuring the cream of Japanese (and sometimes American and English) musicians; The fact she was producing, writing and composing herself made her a true maverick in a very male-dominated industry. These albums, incredibly, have never been released outside of Japan to this day. Tadaima. is Yano's first attempt to leave the acoustic piano aside and delve into the synth sounds of the early '80s. The result is a fascinating electro pop masterpiece showcasing her talent as a writer, musician, and singer, creating her own unique universe. Mixing Japanese and English lyrics, Yano crafts perfect pop songs such as "Tadaima.", "I Sing", "Harusaki Kobeni" (which became one of her most famous songs after its use in a Japanese cosmetics ad), while "Taiyo No Onara" is a suite composed of nine short stories written by children. Contributors on Tadaima. also include Shigesato Itoi, one of Japan's most famous copywriters (for Studio Ghibli among others) who wrote two tracks on the album and his friend legendary illustrator Teruhiko Yumura -- aka King Terry -- who revolutionized underground manga in the '70s with his "heta-uma" (bad-good) style, as showcased on the album's striking artwork.
