LIVANSKIY, KEDR Your Need CD
"Kiska" is the lead single off Kedr Livanskiy's sophomore release, Your Need. The album is a celebration of life and rebirth. It's about a fighter's spirit, and if you will, a little audacity and courage. DJ'ing and early forms of dance music inspired a furious burst of creative energy after months of melancholy, sadness and reflection to record the album in only a matter of weeks. After her breakout album, Ariadna (2017), which put her on the forefront of Russia's burgeoning electronic scene, Kedr felt lost with her identity and was searching for the direction of her next chapter. For a while she felt trapped by her own image and needed quite some time to resolve this internal dissonance -- to grow, to evolve. DJ'ing was the main catalyst to pull her out of this rut. The art form shifted her inspiration to mainly old school styles of dance music: ghetto, house, breakbeat, and UK garage. For the prior year an--a-half she was listening to ambient, krautrock, and more experimental genres -- one can hear the brighter, more energetic influence of early electronic music in the songs on Your Need. One day she was talking with her friend Flaty (Zhenya), a very talented artist from St. Petersburg who's signed to the GOST ZVUK label, and they decided to do a single together. Zhenya is a beatmaster and pays attention to even the smallest details of a track. He brought incredible richness to the composition and Kedr considers him her teacher in this area. Kedr was in charge of the melodies and vibe of the tracks, and the vocal elements. Your Need is like a chapter of life. It's a story that illustrates different scenarios and moods that our mythical hero experiences, living in an urban jungle. Our hero sometimes feels bold, lost or devastated, but also tender and full, like all of us at some point in life. The ending is joyful and bright. Your Need reflects an array of genres and a mix of cultures -- a harmonious combination of differences. Everything Kedr loves about ghetto music, in the traditions of house, dub, breakbeat, ''90s electronic music and modern sounds -- she's embraced and expressed it all throughout. Your Need is Kedr's ode to music from different eras and changing periods.

STERLING, LOUIS Adisceda LP
The second installment of David August's 99CHANTS comes in the form of Adisceda, the debut offering of 21-year-old UK producer Louis Sterling. Louis' talents initially caught David's attention through a demo, which showcased Louis' impressive musical maturity and his ability to express complex emotions through his music. Through an in-depth correspondence over the next months, Adisceda slowly found its shape. Conceived during the mourning process for a close family member that passed away in 2016, Adisceda was freely written as a continuous prayer of reminiscence; "Like a photograph, capturing a close memory as it gradually fades away, becoming pale, faint and less visible", as Louis recalls. "Even at times of desperately trying to recollect the close moments that once meant the world to me." Yet, Adisceda captures the overcoming of grief and loss -- a healing process beautiful, hopeful, pure, and transcendent. Mastered by ambient specialist Rafael Anton Irisarri at Black Knoll Studios NY in a full color cover designed by Colin D. Fletcher. 180 gram vinyl with white inners in stickered sleeve.

DOVS Silent Cities 2LP
On their debut album as DOVS, Tin Man and AAAA summon the ethereal spirit of acid. Tin Man, AKA Johannes Auvinen, has been studying the emotional potential of the Roland TB-303 for 15 years now, and AAAA (Gabo Barranco), a fixture of the Mexico City underground, might as well be his acolyte. While the coincidental similarities of their studio and live approaches make this collaboration feel natural, even expected, Silent Cities is anything but. You'll recognize most of the elements here -- the ubiquitous acid box and hardware drum machines -- yet Auvinen and Barranco arrive in new, mysterious territory this time out. Lush arpeggiation, breakbeats, and atmosphere imbue tracks like "Nostalgic Oblivion" with a widescreen grandeur. "Rene Figures" recalls Specific Momentific-era Cristian Vogel (1996), symphonic, melodic techno with a kick heavy enough for dark, cavernous rooms. Meanwhile, beatless cuts like "Whining Acid" are as intricately crafted as Tin Man's well-loved classical work ("Vienna Blues"). But as a duo, they craft a virtuosic harmonic narrative almost solely with 303s. Tin Man and Donato Dozzy's Nonneo was the first release on Acid Test (2013), setting the tone for the label and unlocking new potential for the genre. DOVS' closer on Silent Cities, "Diazepam Blues", is the label's new melancholic acid anthem and a statement of purpose for Tin Man and AAAA, two hardware masters who have created an album of remarkable emotional depth.

MO' HORIZONS Music Sun Love CD
Now, in the twentieth year of their existence, there cannot be a better title for the new album by Mo'Horizons, Music Sun Love. Let it be Latin, soul reggae, cumbia, samba or music from the Balkans, Mo'Horizons are cultural travelers and feel at home where music is alive. Over the years the duo toured the world. For Music Sun Love they re-reconnected with a lot of the musicians they met on their ongoing journey. The albums kicks off with "Wagabunga Dance", a collaboration with Stoyan Royanov from Bulgaria. The multi-instrumental talent is a member of the Mo'Horizons Soundsystem. "Rhythm Is A Dancer" was recorded in Columbia with local musicians and you may have guessed it by now, it is Mo'Horizons' interpretation of the Eurodance classic by Snap!, adding even more rhythm, fire, and emotion to turn it into a Cumbia burner. Mo'Horizons move on with "Mo Space" and "Hang Loose", recorded together with hangdrum virtuoso Patrik from the Czech Republic. The first single "You Gotta Know It" is one these Mo'Horizons sure shots, an irresistibly driving rhythm with a catchy chorus sung by Noam Bar from Israel. Which brings in Mr. Morski from Bulgaria, another global mover. "Little Mouse" is his kind of theme tune, recorded with a lot of charm and even more fun. "La Vida Es Solo Hoy" adds Ivan Camelo from Columbia to the impressive line-up. He played with Mo'Horizons for the first time in 2017 rocking the Gran Baba, the Horizons' favorite Chiringuito hang-out in Spain, with his unique vocal stylings. "Ella Dice" takes Music Sun Love back home, re-uniting the team with Nené Vasquez from Venezuela who adds a vibrant live feeling to the track. The list of international guests is endless. "Gypsy Ghetto Feel" gets a groovy boost by percussionist Elvis Aljus, aka Gypsy Brown, who is an integral member of Australian funk favorites The Bamboos' rhythm section and often joins Mo'Horizons when they tour down under. Noam Bar returns for the vocal part, adding a cross cultural soul feeling to this Israeli-Australian groove venture. "Inner Melody" closes Music Sun Love in style. It is an unreleased Mo'Horizons remix of the reggae original by Greek DJ colleague Palov turned into a very '60s sounding club track. Also features Connección Bogotá and Tricky Pantrick.

COLTRANE, ALICE Eternity LP
"Released in 1976, Eternity was Alice Coltrane's first album for Warner Bros. after eight wondrous records on Impulse! Combining the drones and textures of India, the gospel and R&B of her Detroit youth and the dissonance of modern classical composition, Coltrane's music in the '70s would become increasingly difficult to categorize. Having moved a few years earlier to California (where she founded the Vedantic Center, an Ashram for spiritual studies), Coltrane stretches out on Eternity -- incorporating various musical styles, including a stirring adaptation of Igor Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring -- and the results are dazzling, both in sonic scope and emotional range. Opener 'Spiritual Eternal' sways between Alice's exploratory organ and the dramatic swell of lush strings. A meditative solo piece for harp, 'Wisdom Eye,' precedes the rollicking rhythms of 'Los Caballos,' which showcases some of her finest soloing. 'Om Supreme' is the album's first track to be built around bhajans (Hindu devotional songs). Featuring graceful keyboards backed by an angelic choir, this piece hints at the ecstatic devotional music that she would later make with members of her Ashram. While Coltrane would delve deeper into her spiritual journeys and continue to expand her musical interests on subsequent LPs, Eternity remains a vivid and compelling display of her unique vision, myriad talents and passions."

COLTRANE, ALICE Radha-Krsna Nama Sankirtana LP
"Radha-Krsna Nama Sankirtana was the first of two albums Alice Coltrane released in 1977 (the other being Transcendence). Coltrane's music during this period grew out of an epiphany in which she would renounce secular life and don the orange robes of a swamini (spiritual teacher in the Hindu tradition). Musically, this meant leaving jazz behind (at least partially) and embracing the chants and rhythms of devotional music. The first half of Radha-Krsna is mostly filled with simple arrangements of bhajans (Hindu devotional songs) and features the singing of students from the Vedantic Center, the Ashram that Coltrane founded in 1975. The group bounces with the joy of a gospel choir (not coincidentally, some had backgrounds in Southern Baptist churches). A rapturous aura permeates opener 'Govinda Jai Jai' with Alice leading on Fender Rhodes. On 'Prema Muditha,' she returns to acoustic piano (her main instrument in the early part of her career) to deliver a powerful and poignant theme. Sidelong 'Om Namah Sivaya' beams with probing organ improvisations accompanied by the drumming of her 13-year-old son Aruna John Coltrane, Jr. This closing track offers a strong indication that even if Alice Coltrane was turning toward new traditions for inspiration, her music was still something that only she could make."

COLTRANE, ALICE Transcendence LP
"Transcendence was not only Alice Coltrane's last studio album for Warner Bros., it would also be her last studio work for nearly three decades. While Eternity and Radha-Krsna Nama Sankirtana followed the composer's muse through an exciting range of musical styles and influences, Transcendence is perhaps the most fully realized of the three LPs, synthesizing the best elements of each into a monumental whole. Side one consists of intimate compositions with Alice's pointillist harp enhanced by intricate string arrangements. At times, the emotional climaxes in 'Radhe Shyam' and the title track sound like the score to an epic film. This would be the closest Coltrane ever came to chamber music, yet rendered with her uniquely spiritual tint. Side two moves into celestial territory with uplifting chants, light handclaps and bluesy organ. These call-and-response chants, featuring members from her Ashram, completely embody both African-American gospel and Hindu devotional traditions, an uncanny fusion that is transformed through Alice's pure spirit. What runs through the album's two musical halves is a powerful sense of devotion and discovery. At this point in her life, Coltrane was on a journey toward truth through sound, and Transcendence gives the listener a front row seat to this quest."

COLTRANE, ALICE Transfiguration 2LP
"By the late '70s, Alice Coltrane had largely gravitated away from jazz, incorporating Hindu chants and hymns into her music to reflect a newfound sense of creative omnipotence. However, in April 1978, she would return to her roots, performing at University of California, Los Angeles to make her first and only live album. Transfiguration, featuring drummer Roy Haynes and bassist Reggie Workman, showcases Alice's many compositional talents and fierce improvisatory abilities. Throughout this double LP set, her playing evokes the time spent in her late husband John Coltrane's band and the avant-garde music of her earlier years. As biographer Franya J. Berkman writes, 'Her up-tempo keyboard work here is the most exciting of her commercial career. With its rapid-fire transpositions of short figures; its long modal passages, rhythmic play, and timbral inventiveness; its sustained energy and burning pace; and the unrelenting support of Haynes and Workman, she takes leave of the jazz business with a truly breathtaking swan song.' Alice Coltrane would not revisit jazz on record for another 26 years, turning instead to spiritual music made with students at her Vedantic Center and self-releasing a series of cassettes under her Sanskrit name, Turiyasangitananda. It is hard to imagine a better farewell than the intense and spellbinding Transfiguration."

BARTLETT, MARTIN Ankle On: Electronic and Orchestral Works CD
Martin Bartlett was an inspiring and original thinker, composer, writer, performer, and organizer. His preoccupation with building aleatoric elements into electronic music distinguishes his work. He devised elegant and open interactions for instrumental performers and computer-controlled synthesizers which included building his own electronic devices and extensive work on the Buchla 400. He worked with or studied under Pauline Oliveros, John Cage, and David Tudor, and collaborated extensively with Don Buchla, and some of their live performances are included on the LP Anecdotal Electronics (ALE 009LP). He also studied Carnatic vocal music with V. Lakshminarayana Iyer in Madras, South Asian music with Pandit Pran Nath, and gamelan with K.R.T. Wasitidipuro. He founded the Vancouver Community Gamelan in 1986. His performances were often collaborative -- for the Western Front's second anniversary in 1975, he devised the four-channel piece "One Piece for Everyone", where he prepared and cooked a cauliflower curry on a table connected to a self-built synthesizer, while reading from texts on food. When the curry was cooked, the piece ended, and everyone was fed. Bartlett was a prolific writer, and he expresses himself in fresh, lucid, and wonderfully descriptive prose, offering clear thinking on social aspects of electronic music performance; on the barriers between the performer and the "black box" and on possibilities for organic systems in electronic music. He also wrote the incandescent manifesto-like piece "Electronic Recalcitrant" (which forms the cover artwork for Anecdotal Electronics), in which he hoped that electronic music would be imbued with "organic codes of growth and metamorphosis" so that he could "pluck elegant and fleshy electronic sound fish from the frothy algorithmic sea of possibilities". It is unclear why Bartlett's work remains unknown. Perhaps it is because it remained largely inside the academy. Perhaps his commitment to live performance and community activity means it was more transient than the work of others. Perhaps his openness about his sexuality played a part in his music not receiving much recognition -- one can only speculate. But correspondence in his archive shows that rejection from labels was a source of great personal discontent, leading to Bartlett working with the Western Front to release his final opus "Pythagoras' Ghost" shortly before his death. Bartlett died young, of AIDS-related causes, in 1993, but his music is characterized by an irresistible and unselfconscious charm that renders his sound unique.Arc Light Editions releases an LP "sketchbook" of live recordings, experiments, and spoken word titled Anecdotal Electronics (ALE 009LP), and a CD of Bartlett's longer electroacoustic and orchestral works, titled Ankle On. Compiled and edited by Luke Fowler with Jennifer Lucy Allan. Mastered by Giuseppe Ielasi.

BANG, ERIK HONORE, EIVIND AARSET, AND SAMUEL ROHRER, JAN Dark Star Safari CD
Dark Star Safari, a newly formed group featuring Samuel Rohrer, Jan Bang, Erik Honoré, and Eivind Aarset presents Dark Star Safari, an evocative song-driven album. These songs conjure shadows of memory, clouds of dreaming and silhouettes of foreboding through the album's layered, many-textured fabrics and Bang's silken delivery of Honoré's lyrics. Dark Star Safari is the work of four kindred spirits, an open modus operandi, and a remarkably interconnected creative nerve system. Key to their collaboration is an organic freedom that enables the music "to fill itself in", to be self-actualizing via the musicians as medium. The music of the ten songs resulted from a two-stage process: an initial phase of free-flowing open improvisation, and a subsequent exploratory phase where hidden potentials were discovered and nurtured. The groundwork of the album originates in a session initiated by Rohrer, who invited Bang and Aarset to the Candy Bomber studio in Berlin. The session was run under the imaginative craftsmanship of sound engineer Ingo Krauss, who worked in the famous Conny Plank studio, its recording and mixing employing sophisticated use of vintage analog equipment alongside cutting-edge digital processes. This meeting opened the door for something larger to emerge; the group did not settle for just the initial open improvisation. They were driven to dig deeper, to examine and manipulate the material, in order to discover what it had to offer. During this second phase Bang, while meditating upon the possibilities and reach of the improvised material, felt a strong urge to give additional shape and color to it by singing. Thus, he organically stepped into the role of vocalist, a role he had not pursued since the early days of his musical career. He sent the results to Honoré, who immediately was inspired by its potential, penning lyrics and providing the project with its name. Honoré composed two additional songs, "Mordechai" and "Fault Line", and thus rounded the project out towards a fully realized opus. The group continued this back and forth process, with Rohrer and Aarset bringing in fine-tuning and enrichment to the song structures and textures. Born out of the spirit of open improvisation and the improvisational practice of the immediate live-remix, Dark Star Safari transcends both of these creative processes in a pursuit of fresh approaches to songwriting. Their music is now ready to meet the hearts, minds and bodies of live audiences, to evolve through that interaction. Art by Ian Anderson, The Designers Republic.

MIEKE, ANNA Idle Mind CD
Idle Mind is the debut album of Anna-Mieke Bishop, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist from Wicklow, Ireland. Rooted in folk, the ten tracks on the record philosophize through abstract lyrics about place, age, belonging, and various societal misalignments. Musical landscapes are weaved into song on Greek bouzouki, guitar, and piano (and cello, in recordings). As a solo performer and collaborative artist, she has joined forces with a diverse mix of other artists, most notably Brían Mac Gloinn (of folk duo Ye Vagabonds), who, as well as playing on all of the above, adds drones on Indian harmonium and fiddle accompaniment. Another, more recent, collaborator is Matthew Jacobson (of contemporary jazz ensemble Insufficient Funs) adding a flare on percussion. Themes and inspiration for Anna-Mieke's songs stem from a colorful background of experience: learning Maori songs at school in New Zealand and sean-nós songs off the coast of Ireland; hitch-hiking through Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria, picking up traditional songs along the way; cycling from her home in Wicklow to the southern tip of Spain; living in Granada for a while, and then, in Cork, performing cello in the experimental improv group, HEX. Anna-Mieke has shared the stage with many established artists, supporting the likes of Lisa Hannigan, Martin Hayes, This Is The Kit, Rozi Plain, Lankum, Gyda Valtysdottir (mum), Rachel Sermanni, Sarah Neufeld (Arcade Fire), and Ye Vagabonds, while sharing the stage with David Kitt, Landless, and Rosie Carney. From performing in larger venues such as the National Concert Hall and to opening the inaugural RTE Radio Folk Awards in Vicar Street, to underground caves, to manor house ballrooms, to tiny cafés and bookshops, to the precarious ruins of a church, to forest hideaways in the hills of France, Anna-Mieke has shared her songs in a curious combination of spaces."Right now, as our lives become a little more virtual, augmented and artificial, Anna Mieke's songs with their infinity of interlaced traditions and her voice with its alluring melody of intimacy is a wonderful and very welcome gift." --Other Voices

Nosuchkey (Nico Purman) makes a bold debut on the Art Of Memory label with a deadly four-track EP of masterfully reduced, but stylish and evocative minimal techno. "Stages" is post minimal techno with a focus on mind melting melodic riffs that ripple over the rooted drums. "FMFMFM" is another fluid bit of deep techno that is wired-up with languid synths constantly wrapping and warping round the drums. "Lunch" is a stripped-back but impactful techno style built on rubbery kicks and modulated synth lines. Direct but dynamic, it is excellently timeless techno that leads on to closer "ACD RDFN".

BRADOCK, PEPE What A Mess! LP
Pépé Bradock on What A Mess!: "It all started with words, and a project for an art book with a CD, acronym for Corps Diplomatiques, as a tribute to a special diplomatic elephant called Abul Abbas. A few mundane terms, picked randomly, then coupled with frequencies chosen in a spontaneous way for their presupposed properties or synchronicities, whether in space, orbital rhythms, color spectrum, or electro-magnetic fields. Those free associations became the foundation for a written composition, the reprogramming of recordings of computer improvisations, and a dialogue with the visual elements of the book. It is also based on the deconstruction of the first LP I did and its reconstruction under the auspices of echoes of a joyful brouhaha from a dreamed speakeasy, including the true voices behind the charade. The freedom is given to the listener to connect the dots and name the tracks according to their own state of mind, mood or interpretation. All further information are in the book!"

Released on CD by Aurora Borealis back in 2010, the label present Black Mountain Transmitter's Black Goat Of The Woods on transparent smoke vinyl. An ode to the Lovecraftian lore of Shub Niggurath, Black Goat Of The Woods was conceived as "the soundtrack from some lost low budget horror movie, rediscovered on an old and faded VHS cassette found moldering in a deserted house in the depths of the woods". The one-man project of J.R. Moore, Black Mountain Transmitter has released several albums, all to great critical acclaim, and the quality of his work speaks volumes. The original Black Goat Of The Woods CD version was the first official release, and a reissue of the long sold-out and much sought after limited CD. On describing the recording, Moore said: "The music was certainly very much influenced by that certain breed of '70s horror films. Things like the soundtrack to the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974), Giuliano Sorgini's atmospheres in Living Dead At The Manchester Morgue (1974); Carl Zittrer's soundscapes in Deranged (1974), Children Shouldn't Play With Dead Things (1972), and Dead Of Night (1974), and of course people like Fabio Frizzi in Italian horror and the BBCs Radiophonic Workshop's electronic sounds in something like The Stone Tape and countless creepy old TV productions..." An excellent, macabre and psychedelic release that spans electronica, soundtracks, and experimental genres in its 40-minute playing time, Black Goat Of The Woods pays perfect homage to the dark denizen of the nocturnal glades, and is a true paean to backwoods horror. Mastered for vinyl by James Plotkin; Cut at The Carvery, London. 140 gram, transparent smoke vinyl; reverse board heavyweight sleeve; Includes download code and printed insert; Edition of 300.

SAMUELS, JOHANNA Have A Good One 10"
"I love songs that make you feel something viscerally," says Johanna Samuels, the LA-based songwriter who releases brand new EP Have A Good One on Basin Rock, and it's a sentiment that echoes right through the heart of the five stirring songs that make up her new work, Born in New York City and named after Dylan's "Visions of Johanna", Samuels subsequently moved to LA and grew up on the classic songwriters of yesteryear before finding her way to Elliott Smith and Jon Brion. Samuels then spent the best part of a decade honing her craft, carefully peeling away the layers until she found herself here; a stark, absorbing, and visceral new collection. Finding a way to balance bright, pop melodies with a drifting sense of melancholy that can't be placed, Samuels made the most of a bad year, writing the EP as a reaction to her long-term relationship falling apart. More than just skin-and-bone, the songs here are comprised of lap steel, clarinet, Juno analog synthesizers, and more; this rich instrumentation provides a swaying and elegant back-drop which helps bring Samuel's stories beautifully to life. Recorded with musical partner, the up-and-coming producer Sean O'Brien who helped engineer The National's Sleep Well Beast LP (2017), the new EP was created in his studio, which became something of a haven for Samuels and the work she was creating. As such, the five songs on Have A Good One are full of emotional and musical depth, each moment of darkness acutely balanced by a brightness that lifts these songs out of the shadows and into the hearts and minds of the listener. "Why Do I Go There?" is a bold, glowing opener, the playful piano and lush instrumentation belying the sense of heartache in Samuels beautifully lilting voice, driving the track forwards as it softly buries its way into your consciousness. Then comes the tender, country-like balladry of "Rush Of Wheels", written quickly in the dead hours of night, it presents a poignant quest for answers, aching under the weight of its emotional turmoil. Accompanying "Rush Of Wheels" is a video that Samuel's made with best friend (and Sundance Grand Jury prizewinner) Anu Valia. Basin Rock is a relatively new label based in the Lancashire/Yorkshire border town of Todmorden. They've released albums by Julie Byrne, Nadia Reid, and Jim Ghedi. Heavyweight, die cut sleeve; Includes download code.

HALEY, BILL See You Later, Alligator 10"
"It's quite astonishing that rock n' roll music was as popular in Brazil's blazing heat of the year 1956 as elsewhere. This is proved through this 10" album, a reissue of an original Brazilian 1956 Bill Haley & His Comets platter, which is one of the rarest amongst hard-to-find albums, today. Bill Haley & His Comets already started to rock around the world with 'Rock Around The Clock' in 1955 which was also the title song in the movie Blackboard Jungle. He became the first boss of rock and he eventually also reached the country of Brazil in 1956. Haley got millions of fans in Brazil and therefore he went on several tours throughout the country of Brazil during the following years. It started with two movies starring Bill Haley & His Comets, 'Rock Around The Clock', and 'Don't Knock The Rock', which found their ways into Brazilian movie theaters resulting into decisions by the record company Decca to issue Haley's records in slightly different forms in Brazil as well. Those platters are some of today's most sought-after collector's items because of their limited ordinance. Besides the title track on 'See You Later, Alligator - rock n' roll com Bill Haley e seus Cometas', there are more hit-songs such as The Saints rock n' roll, an adaption of the late standard 'When The Saints Go Marching In', 'Teenager's Mother (Are You Right?)', plus some songs from the above mentioned movies, including the breath-taking instrumental 'Rudy's Rock', which features Haley's saxophone-man, Rudy Pompilli. All these songs are not only music history but dancefloor fillers! This music gets you in the mood to dance, to rock around the clock! We added two bonus tracks to the song line-up of the original album for your extra pleasure. Both bonus tracks were recorded in 1956. 'Two Hound Dogs' could've been meant as an answer song to Presley's 'Hound Dog'. The second bonus song, 'Hide And Seek', is sung by Billy Williamson of the Comets."

U.K. SUBS Endangered Species LP
Beat Generation presents a reissue of the U.K. Subs' Endangered Species, originally released in 1982. The Subs' fourth studio album is considered by many of the band´s fans their finest moments, and there´s many reasons why it could very well be: the record´s powerful sound (courtesy of the production of the band's Nicky Garratt) did justice to a band on top of their game, recording some of the best songs of their career. With Endangered Species, the legendary UK punk outfit proved their songwriting skills were extremely sharpened and ready to cut! From classic punk numbers like "Endangered Species", "Living Dead", "Lie Down And Die" or "I Robot" to slower stompers like "Countdown" or "Down On The Farm" (infamously covered by Guns ´n` Roses on The Spaghetti Incident (1993)), the record is strong proof of what the Subs are capable! There´s even space for a bit of post punk in great tracks like "Sensitive Boys"! No self-respecting punk should let this one pass, up The Subs!

KAWASHIMA, MAKOTO Homo Sacer LP
Makoto Kawashima was born in Saitama, a prefecture of the Greater Tokyo Area, in 1981. He picked up the alto sax in 2008, and started playing solo in 2010. He is the founder of the Homosacer (Sacredhuman) label. Homo Sacer was originally released in 2015. It was Kawashima's second solo release and his first full-length album. It was also the final release by P.S.F. Records. The album was recorded live during a heavy rainstorm at the gallery and café Yamanekoken in Iruma, Saitama. Facing up towards the ceiling, his sound arcing up to meet the raindrops beyond the roof. Kawashima played with a reed he had been given by the mother of the late Japanese saxophone giant Kaoru Abe. Housed in a heavy tip-on jacket featuring metallic printing and gloss film-laminate finish. Pressed to high quality vinyl at RTI; Digital download included."Homo sacer -- sacred human. Kawashima's sax is ripe with the spirit of Japanese free jazz, dwelling as it does between the violent and the beautiful. Kaoru Abe, Masayoshi Urabe, Takayuki Hashimoto, Harutaka Mochizuki... all of these altoists live in an area of personal expression rare in the world, one that feels like the body itself is being whittled away at. It feels like we have a new genius to add to that list." --Hideako Kondo, from the Japanese liner notes

VA Tokyo Flashback Psychedelic Speed Freaks 4LP
Black Editions present a monumental collection of 22 exclusive tracks by 22 of the most important artists to emerge from the Japanese underground over the last 40 years. Directed by Ghost's Masaki Batoh and produced in tribute to the late Hideo Ikeezumi, founder of P.S.F. Records, the Modern Music record store and G-Modern Magazine. Few label founders loom as large in the history of underground music as P.S.F Record's Hideo Ikeezumi. Over three decades and more than 200 titles, Ikeezumi's intensely critical ear guided and assembled a body of music that transcended genre; he exclusively championed artists that were uncompromising in their visions, unconcerned with trends or commercial success. This four-LP compilation, selected by Ghost's Masaki Batoh, is a primer of Ikeezumi's curation: a kaleidoscopic collection of previously unreleased gems from the Japanese underground. Running the full stylistic gamut from the hushed tones of Kim Doo Soo and Go Hirano to the psychedelic rock splendor of Overhang Party and High Rise this set connects the dots between generations and movements, all linked by the common thread of Ikeezumi's panoramic musical vision. The most original voices in the avant garde, psychedelia, folk, free jazz, and rock all found a home with P.S.F. Records. Directed by Masaki Batoh. Edited by Yoshiaki Kondo (GOK Sound). Mastered by Kazuo Ogino; Vinyl Mastering by John Golden. Designed by Takuya Kitamura. CANNELL, LAURA The Sky Untuned CD
Laura Cannell's fifth album The Sky Untuned was recorded in one take at St Andrew's Church, Raveningham, Norfolk, UK in December 2018. The seven tracks were composed and developed during a hectic period of commissions, tours and musical adventures. The Sky Untuned takes as it's starting point the theory of the music of the spheres, in which the universe is constantly making sound that humans cannot hear. The music is teased out of the land and sky and performed using Cannell's signature minimalist chamber sounds, utilizing extended instrumental techniques of overbowed violin (with deconstructed bass viol bow wrapped around the violin to produce drone and melody), scordatura violin tunings, and double recorders (inspired by medieval stone carvings). VON SPAR Under Pressure CD
"It's the terror of knowing what this world is about," David Bowie sang in 1981, backed by Queen. He performed the remarkable feat of taking a song with such lyrics and creating a hit. Von Spar's Under Pressure also knows what this world is about, with its intimidatory posturing, acute social competition and the fight for survival as we enter an age of surveillance capitalism. The music's inherent urgency is in evidence from the very first beat, yet it still appears to float freely, creating space for reflection and self-interrogation. What others call a "band", Von Spar see as a modular system. The creative community of Sebastian Blume, Jan Philipp Janzen, Christopher Marquez, and Phillip Tielsch is in a state of constant flux. Von Spar is an interface, providing access to rediscovery and fresh experience of, to all intents and purposes, the familiar. Under Pressure is their fifth album, not counting their homage to Can (recorded live with Stephen Malkmus). 15 years have passed since their debut Die Uneingeschränkte Freiheit Der Privaten Initiative (2004), five since Streetlife (2014). On closer examination, there is a chameleonesque quality to Von Spar's discography. Their records are the result of continuous metamorphosis, opening wormholes to post punk, krautrock and '80s art pop. The constants: rhythmic refinement and harmonic quantum leaps, swirling synthesizer arpeggios, backwards guitars with no hint of retrogradation. The eight songs on Under Pressure were recorded in Von Spar's Dumbo Studio in Cologne, with various guests from adding noteworthy contributions. As on Streetlife, the formative voice belongs to Chris A. Cummings aka Marker Starling. His distinctive falsetto graces over half of the songs, asking: "Is there a cure for this/Unhappiness, happiness?" On the opening track, Cummings is joined by Eiko Ishibashi (Kafka's Ibiki, Jim O'Rourke, Merzbow) in a Japanese dream sequence exploring where they might get to if the shackles of the flesh are cast off. Punk and reggae professor Vivien Goldman (The Flying Lizards) picks up the thread and liberates herself from the ghosts of the past on "Boyfriends (Dead Or Alive)". Lætitia Sadier (Stereolab) sings on the album's kraut-pop hit "Extend The Song" which could run and run for ever, powered by motoric energy: "If someone would ask me/Could I go on?" Less answers, more questions -- this is the song's greatest leitmotif. It is left to low-fi maverick R. Stevie Moore to pose the question on "Falsetto Giuseppe" "Should I worry?" Of course!" --Arno Raffeiner

VA John Coltrane 50th Memorial Concert At Cafe Oto 2CD
"John Coltrane's music developed at such a breakneck pace during the two decades that he was active that it would be hard to single out one moment that encapsulates his legacy. This memorial gig -- held on the 50th anniversary of Trane's death, aged 40, on July 17th 1967 -- solves that problem by focusing exclusively on the last couple of years of his life, by which time he had emerged as a champion and pioneer of the free-jazz avant-garde. The opening act -- a newly-formed international trio comprising Danish flautist (and sometime saxophonist) Julie Kjær and two drummers, Mark Wastell from the UK and Ståle Liavik Solberg from Norway -- takes inspiration from the 16-minute track 'To Be', from the 1967 album Expression (released just two months after Coltrane's death), on which he and Pharoah Sanders played flutes. At that time, Coltrane was also experimenting with multiple percussionists and, here, the twin drummers set up a restless undertow of small gestures, over which Kjær extemporises melodic fragments for flute with a calm determination. For the main event, the showcase's attention gazes further back to 1965 and Coltrane's Sun Ship -- with all five of the album's tracks reinterpreted by ursine British tenor giant Paul Dunmall's Sunship Quartet featuring the explosive rhythm section of bassist Olie Brice and criminally under-recorded drummer Tony Bianco, plus second tenor-man Howard Cottle. Using Trane's brief, fanfare-like heads as springboards into high-energy group improvisation, the quartet summon an utterly convincing and powerfully transporting free-jazz blast. When veteran UK horn man -- and fellow long-time Trane acolyte -- Alan Skidmore steps in to add a third tenor to the mix, a frisson of anticipation ripples through the room: not, these days at least, so well-known for avant-garde strategies, just what would Skid contribute? The answer is a rugged lyricism that slips beautifully through the cracks of the turbulent melee, illuminating it from within. To wrap things up, every player involved in the evening crowds the already cramped stage of Café Oto for a brief mass blow-out in the style of Coltrane's epochal large-group 1965 free-jazz session Ascension. A fine, noisy, passionate finale." --Daniel Spicer, Jazzwise Recorded live at Cafe OTO, London on July 17th, 2017 by Shaun Crook.

Radiant Aura Faculty (aka Raf Reza) takes us even deeper with the mystical 'Cid Pit Riddim', a slamming 707 acid bender sure to melt any dance floor. Things get slippery with Body Butter's debut single 'Lights In The Hallway', a timeless operatic pop opus featuring Neil Rankin (aka Burt Sugar), Chris Evans (aka Mr. Bliss) and Hemingway behind the board. On the flip side, things heat up with Shamanta Chandran's project WeTurnToRed (recently releasing their debut EP on ORO Records), featuring the progressive modular techno odyssey 'Warm Winter', an escape from Toronto's long and tumultuous blizzards. Emerging from the Mahogani Forest, Korea Town Acid reinterprets Hemingway's emotional ode to the jazz aesthetic 'Blue Notes' with her trademark cerebral rhythms and a masterful bassline that elevates the original to new heights. Closing it off, we have an amazing collaboration between Curtis Clark (aka Smoke of Lab.our Music) & Em Zy (member of Nikki Fierce) called Smoke & Shadows with their stellar debut single Convincing Thoughts that features Em Zy's hazy vocal emanations amidst a backdrop of mystical reverberations and a dark, powerful groove."

VA Tokyo Nights: Female J-Pop Boogie Funk 1981 to 1988 2LP
2019 repress; double LP version. "Following successful disco excavation from the Caribbean to South Africa, Boston-based label Cultures of Soul booked a first class ticket to Narita to bring you the latest release, Tokyo Nights: Female J-Pop Boogie Funk: 1981 to 1988. This compilation presents 12 of the most memorable and sought-after songs of the era recorded by female artists. The music is a reflection of the unbridled optimism, technological achievement, excess and exuberance of Bubble-era Japan. More than catchy melodies and funky baselines, these are reflections of a time when Japan was the center, and future of the world. The Bubble can be characterized as an endless, extravagant party where personal and corporate wealth soared through the explosion of real estate and stock prices. Scores of young Japanese men and women moved to cities in search of affluence, transforming them into neon wonderlands. Changes in morals, values and gender roles followed suit. Prosperity leads to indulgence, and the taste for nightlife, from flashy restaurants to glitzy discotheques, was unquenchable. A soundtrack to this new, lavish lifestyle was necessary and the latest sound, City Pop (urban pop music for those with urban lifestyles), epitomized these attitudes. While influenced by American R&B and boogie, elements of fusion, YMO style Technopop, and adult-oriented rock (AOR) are front and center. Sung primarily in Japanese (with a word or two of English sprinkled in), City Pop is Japanese music for Japanese people. Producers like Tatsuro Yamashita, Toshiki Kadomatsu, and Haruomi Hosono were quick to embrace the latest studio equipment and technology. Synthesizers like the Yamaha DX7, Roland Juno-60, ARP Quadra, Moog Polymoog and Oberheim OB-8, as well as drum machines like the Linndrum, were prevalent. Digital reverb was applied liberally. Compiled by Eli Cohen (Alliance Upholstery) and Deano Sounds (Cultures of Soul), Tokyo Nights includes tracks by Hitomi Tohyama, Junko Ohashi, Mizuki Koyama, Kaoru Akimoto, Aru Takamura, Mariko Tone, Rie Murakami, RA MU, Kikuchi Momoko and Yumi Seino. Each selection celebrates the unique traits and meticulous production that define the sound. Think sandy beaches and metropolitan skylines; illumination and romance. Embrace the feeling of movement, from a coastal highway stretching towards the horizon or the city sprawling into the future. Turn on the hi-fi and slip into these Tokyo Nights."

SHRINE Celestial Fire CD
"New album of intense and carefully crafted soundscapes from Bulgaria's Shrine after his acclaimed 2016 album Ordeal 26.04.86. Based on the fictional story for Tomb Raider III, created by the British game studio CORE in 1998, the story begins in Antarctica millions of years ago, where a meteorite has crashed into the landmass and when the continent was still located in the tropics. Millennia later it was discovered by the ancient Polynesians who had reached the Antarctic coast and they soon realized that strange otherworldly powers surround the celestial rock and so the people began to worship it as a deity. After severe mutations started to occur among their newborn, the settlers fled in terror and never came back but before they left, they sealed the meteorite into a deep underground chamber, locked by four 'keys', four unique objects crafted from the same alien material as the meteorite itself. In the 19th century, a group of sailors travelling with Charles Darwin came to Antarctica and rediscovered the artefacts. The story follows the search for the four artefacts and the rediscovering of the meteorite, hypothesized to contain the most important findings in genetics and evolution since Darwin. We are aurally taken through this unique world through 6 singular chapters of pristine sonic grandeur. Artwork by Dehn Sora."

The radiation from the distant otherness takes audible form in four pieces of ethereal, pulsating atmospherics, where the multitude of transmissions is implemented via a curious amalgam of electronic and acoustic sources operated by Kaarna & XVL. As a result Syvys reflects the many phases of a stellar journey in a dreamlike state, encountering both enchantment and anxiousness."

ASHTORETH Rites I & II LP
LP version. "We're glad to welcome Belgian artist Peter Verwimp and his shamanistic guitar driven soundscapes. The first instalment for the Rites series touches on the importance of ceremony and ritual in our daily lives. It deals with our interconnectedness with nature as a whole and the necessity to acknowledge and use this connection as an amplifier of thoughts, ideas and emotions. Minimal, meditative ambient drones with layers of meandering guitars and voices mixing elements of doom, drone and ambient experimentation. Rites I & II take a shamanic and animistic approach to our surroundings, unveiling inner and outer visual landscapes, a journey through flesh, sound and spirit."

SUTEKH HEXEN Sutekh Hexen CD
"We're truly honored to welcome US black ambient veterans Sutekh Hexen to the fold. Both defiant and meditative, their latest self-titled full-length and first studio album furthers the project's inquiry into opposition, endurance, and paradox. Both hypnotic and cruel, these ten highly charged tracks transgress yet again any previously imposed boundaries while upholding their raw ethos at its root, and at times defying the listener's expectations altogether. Though tempestuous as ever, with this work, Sutekh Hexen reaches across thresholds and thrusts longtime listeners into redefined spaces: haunted disorientation, surreal agony, the distress of buried forces surfacing, a revelation of black tongues. Each track is a rite of clandestine horror through a distillation of power-ambient, industrial, and black metal deconstructionism. This is a new era of Sutekh Hexen, and it is a sharpening of their blade, a merciless lucidity. Let there be light."

TREHA SEKTORI Sorieh CD
"CD reissue. Dehn Sora, the man behind this unique project is also a member of Sembler Deah (featuring members of Amenra) and a long-time collaborator of the Church Of Ra. Recorded in complete isolation, in a moment of reverence and fury to create something physical yet unreal, the album unveils a music based on breath, the cutting of this breath, deconstruction and descent, meditative and ultimately broken. Eyes open for all, a fine rain of dust and hands falls for ages. Sorieh for "Sweat", the sweat of those who decide to create and edifice to go above the sun, without suffering burns. It's to be seen an appendix, a specific chapter of time. It consists of a lone track, cut into different movements. The material was formally composed for live performances, with the overbearing urge of facing eyes, to live through them. Imagined as a burden to carry, a day we didn't expect, and a final step that is unknown. No way to unload what is on our shoulders. Acceptance is the only way to trace a new path. Peaceful times with hard thoughts. SOTE Parallel Persia LP
Pivotal Iranian artist Ata Ebtekar mounts a head-buzzing debut for Diagonal, pushing microtonal tunings and timbres into mind-bending geometrical designs that echo the modular synth and strings formulæ of Dariush Dolat-Shahi for Smithsonian Folkways, but keen much deeper into noisy, uncanny valleys of modernist perceptual exploration. Parallel Persia presents the latest iteration of Sote's restlessly searching sound which has been in action for 30 years now. Commissioned for an AV performance at Donau festival in 2018, the album is a natural extension of his stunning Sacred Horror In Design LP, feeding classical Iranian music tropes into a computer and modular synths to diffract and detach their meaning and operation, open them up to strange possibilities of electro-acoustic practice in the process. But more than ever in Parallel Persia, his focus turns from percussion to tonal relationships, combining various synthesis techniques and instrumental recordings at the service of a holistic voice and "locked timbre", or more simply a poetic way of uniting his sounds into a brilliant aural energy. As Ebtekar explains, "Conceptually, Parallel Persia deals with the illusion and creation of an artificial hyperreal culture manipulated and controlled by an imperious agency somewhere within all galaxies. Like all realities, greed and arrogance channels destruction of life. However, the path to havoc includes resistance via beauty, grace and symmetry. Snapshots of an apocryphal Iran is presented via sonic schematics for a synthetic 'Meta-Persian' experience. This experience can be in our present-day life or maybe somewhere else somehow differently in a parallel world..." In this surreal noumenal space, Sote triggers a series of beguiling chain reactions that resonate throughout each track, with electronic frequencies modulating the acoustic and vice-versa in a dizzying and mathematically sound "euphonious complete whole". Here, the tar and santur initially sound like themselves in "Modality Transporter", but by the end of this opener they are transformed into ribboning tendrils of extruded electronics, and continue to morph in fascinating ways, joined by unearthly voices in "Brass Tacks", and pulled into bittersweet taffy on "Atomic Hypocrisy", while utterly upending our proprioceptions in "Trans Force", and ancient-futuristic chants and dance rhythms working in parallel dimensions to Rashad Becker in "Pipe Dreams", until he's speaking in a purely singular language of unique intonation and shatterproof, beatless rhythm on "Pseudo Scholastic". RIYL: Dariush Dolat-Shahi, Marcus Schmickler, Florian Hecker, Parsa. Mastered and cut at Dubplates & Mastering. Edition of 500.

TRACEY Biostar CD
A new addition to the label's extended family, Tracey arrives on Dial with his debut LP, Biostar. Following previous releases on Aus Music, Voyage Direct, and Intergraded, Biostar pushes the technical and emotional craft of this vital young producer in exciting new directions, submerging listeners in thirteen tracks of sublime electro, ambient experimentation, and warm, tonal techno. Based in the Netherlands, Tracey's music is undoubtedly indebted to a legacy of emotive electronic music, the sort whose stark futurist vision cannot be equaled. Instead he strives and succeeds to create something personal and charismatic from a perhaps familiar palette of sounds. Somewhere between experimentation and understated songwriting, Biostar is a worthy edition to Dial's legacy of unique, artist-led albums. In the tradition of established Dial artists such as Lawrence, Roman Flügel, and Efdemin, Tracey's immediately apparent strength is an almost supernatural ability to conjure affecting and memorable melodies with minimalist intent, often just utilizing the raw textures of his machines. From album-opener "THRRVL", Tracey tracks the initially gentle undulations of his studio seemingly waking to life, plotting a neat melodic shuffle on "TRR" and then, by, "CCLRT", something dense, trippy and yearning. From here on in, Biostar plots an intriguing course through hypnotic, clockwork crunch ("THWRD"), to Drexciyan submersion ("HDRCSTCS") and rhythmic experimentation on "PHTCPHRK". Some of the more affecting moments on Biostar emerge from its more obtuse sections; "DTFNK" deciphers a surprisingly catchy melody among waves of scrambled signals, while the initially skittish "DRMRBT" blossoms into an electro lullaby at 126bpm. By the arrival of wistful closing track "CLSTLBNG", listeners are likely to emerge content from the deepest exploration yet of Tracey's unique analog ecosystem.

MOORE, RUDY RAY Return Of Dolemite LP
RSD 2019 release, re-released. "As prelude to the upcoming Eddie Murphy-starring Netflix film Dolemite Is My Name, the eponymous Dolemite Records presents this record store day-exclusive vinyl reissue from cult comedian Rudy Ray Moore. Despite never achieving major mainstream success in his career, the scope of influence from cult comedian Rudy Ray Moore is palpable and far-reaching. A consummate performer and raconteur, Moore's comedy emphasized raw and explicit story-telling and wisecracking, often told in rhyme, and featuring a backing band; a style of performance that inadvertently set a blueprint for early hip-hop music. Following in the footsteps of comic legends Redd Foxx and Moms Mabley, his stage presence would inspire the likes of Katt Williams and Snoop Dogg, find widespread underground success among inner cities in the 1970s, and would lead him to collaborate with a wide swath of artists into his later years, from Big Daddy Kane to Insane Clown Posse. His various bits and sketches would even become sampling fodder in tracks by Madlib, A Tribe Called Quest, DJ Shadow, 2 Live Crew, and innumerable others. Above all else, Rudy Ray Moore's best known and most beloved claim to fame is his tales of the legend of Dolemite the pimp. Derived from various obscene stories he overheard while working in a record store, Moore's most famous routine saw him take on the role of Dolemite, and recount humorous stories and anecdotes which framed the hustler as something of a ghetto folk hero. These anecdotes proved to be incredibly popular in urban clubs and parties, and would later be adapted into the hit 1975 blaxploitation film Dolemite, of which Moore would produce and star. In celebration of Rudy Ray Moore's extensive works, as well as the upcoming Eddie Murphy-starring Netflix biopic featuring him, Dolemite Records proudly presents this vinyl reissue of one of his 1975 release, Return Of Dolemite. Coming just on the cusp of the feature film's release, Return sees Moore at the top of his game, spinning anecdotal yarns about sexual conquests, hustling stories, and in his own parlance: 'F*ckin' up motherf*ckas!' Exclusive to Record Store Day 2019, this deluxe reissue comes decades after its initial release, and the first time pressed on vinyl in over 40 years."

IL CIVETTO Facing The Wall CD
Global pop with a meaning -- that's Il Civetto. Ever since the release of their in 2015, the fan base of Il Civetto has grown steadily. Word has got around that Il Civetto concerts are rousing and magical, an ecstatic modern musical experience, never too brute, always danceable -- in a concert hall, just like on record. After several tours in Germany with a total of more than 300 concerts, appearances at MS Dockville, the Fusion Festival, Montreux Jazz Festival, the 3000°, or at the Anti-G20 Protests in Hamburg, the band now inspires an international audience from Istanbul to Copenhagen. Il Civetto's journey began using guerrilla tactics in the Berlin subway in 2010: Playing in the train and shaking the wagon. Bribing the securities with kebab to play longer. Growing up in Berlin's club scene with appearances in Kater Holzig, Ritter Butzke, or Sisyphos, the band scores an impressive success story. And now album number two: Facing The Wall. Written in Morocco, Greece, and Andalusia, sung in English, German, and French, recorded in Berlin -- Il Civetto have carried their ecstatic-magical playground from the stage to the studio a second time with great attention to detail. The dreamy lightness of the self-titled debut album has given way to hard reality: Facing The Wall is a deeply touching fragment of our time. The expression of a generation in upheaval, searching. An album between euphoria and melancholy -- wallowing, sweating, dancing -- with a tingling belly and wide-open eyes. Il Civetto have become more serious, somehow more real, and yet have retained their very own, characteristic sound. Deeply touching, always danceable. "Geld Essen" and Karussell feature Twistah.

UUUU UUUU CD
UUUU is a new outfit featuring Edvard Graham Lewis, Thighpaulsandra, Matthew Simms, and Valentina Magaletti. Individually these humans have implanted feathers in caps such as Coil, Dome, Wire, Tomaga, etc. Collectively they form UUUU, a powerhouse construction of fierce and free sonic exploration, as liberating as it is frightening, resulting in a richly rewarding sound. The artists united present a project of exquisite curiosity and confident chaos where the individual thumbprints mesh into a gloriously muscular frenetic free sonic soup. "It's Going All Over The Floor" presents itself as a terse meeting between dance, ambient, abstraction, and improvisation. "The Latent Black Path Of Summons Served" proceeds in a tense energy field where random elements bounce around until locking into a fourth world pattern designed to fall into a dense mass of ecstatic noise. "Boots With Wings" is classic Lewis -- a pop tune from the other side of the mind. UUUU is a schizophrenic seething/soothing masterpiece of a past/present hybrid, equally at home in the club, the home, and the mind. Photography by Antonio Curcetti. Recorded and mixed at Aeriel Studios, Brechfa by Thighpaulsandra; Mastered by Sarah Register. MARKS, KAREN Cold Cafe 12"
Almost four decades since its domestic release, Karen Marks's 1981 single Cold Café has finally reaped it's deserved international credit to become one of Australia's most recognized minimal wave recordings. Efficient Space now showcases the Melbourne artist's brief but entire discography, including two previously unheard demos, all produced with experimental synthesist Ash Wednesday (The Metronomes, Modern Jazz, Thealonian Music). A rarity in the then male-dominated industry, Marks found her footing in music, first through rock journalism and then in band management. Formally of Adelaide, newly arrived synth-punks JAB (Johnny Crash, Ash Wednesday, Bodhan X) approached her for representation, subsequently contributing tracks to seminal 1978 snapshot Lethal Weapons and playing the Crystal Ballroom's opening night. Wednesday and Crash would soon dissolve JAB, enlisting Mark Ferry and Sean Kelly to create Models. Still under Mark's management, Models became one of the fastest rising new bands of the punk movement, playing to full houses of dedicated and frenzied fans everywhere. Sadly, internal frictions forced Wednesday and Marks to leave after two years, with Crash following three months later. Her creative relationship with Wednesday fortified with the co-production of his 1980 machine-pop prank "Love By Numbers", her swooning chorus uplifting his deadpan count to 100, before the two collaborated on Marks's own recording persona. Immortalized by the icy Oz wave of Cold Café, her Astor issued 7" also boasted the caffeinated flip "Won't Wear It For Long" -- a should be hit with guitar from future Icehouse member Robert Kretschmer. Fans know of one more recording -- "You Bring These Things", a forlorn arrangement of an otherwise unreleased Paul Kelly song, gifted to her by the revered wordsmith. The track only ever appeared on the Astor promotional LP Terra Australis (1981), sinfully alongside "Up There Cazaly" and Joe Dolce -- hard proof that the label grossly misunderstood her talent (Marks recalls their persistent requests to show midriff and cleavage). Locked in a dissatisfying label arrangement and at this stage unwilling to follow her peers to greener pastures overseas, she felt her only way out was to cease all further activities. At the 11th hour of preparing this retrospective, two tracks unexpectedly surfaced via two cassettes -- a paranoid demo version of her signature tune "Cold Café", and a long-lost fourth song "Problem Page". Both living room recordings follow Marks and Wednesday's ingenious framework of minimal lyrics, minimal chord progressions.

FICINO ENSEMBLE Winter CD
Winter is the debut release from Ficino Ensemble, a group of flexible size specializing in the rich repertoire of classical chamber music -- a tradition of intimacy, introspection, poise, and exchange to which they bring such insight in performance. Here, they present three works -- Brahms's "August Clarinet Quintet of 1891", Ravel's virtuosic "Introduction and Allegro" (1905); to the title track, "Winter", by Irish composer Garrett Sholdice, composed especially for this project in 2018 In some respects Brahms's "Clarinet Quintet" looks back to the elegant designs of Mozart's "Clarinet Quintet". Yet in its deliberate patterns of speech its richly dark hues, the music is deeply personal -- each movement the revelation of a secret. Ravel's "Introduction and Allergo", for harp, flute, clarinet, and string quartet, is brighter -- evoking, perhaps, the particular radiance of sunshine on a December morning. In "Winter", for harp, clarinet, and string trio, Garrett Sholdice provides a fulcrum about which the Brahms and Ravel may balance each other. This is a work entirely concerned with re-colorings and shadings of musical material. At its core, it is a ritual that simultaneously moves and stays still. Ficino Ensemble was formed by its artistic director Nathan Sherman in 2012. Their concerts have been described as exciting and intimate with a high caliber of ensemble playing. The members of the group are recognized in Ireland and abroad as soloists and chamber musicians.Garrett Sholdice (b. 1983) is an Irish composer. His music has been described as possessing an "exquisite delicacy" (The Irish Times). Notable recent works include "The Root and the Crown", a twenty-minute ensemble work, commissioned by Crash Ensemble.

PHURNNE To Love Lightly... LP
"First album -- maybe even first physical release? -- by this exquisitely odd Massachusetts-based trio of sound-collagers. Violinist, Jen Gelineau, is well known to FTR lovers via her work with Eggs Eggs and Donkey No No. Laptop cruncher Andrea Pensado has likewise released a solo album with us -- Without Knowing Why (FTR 203LP, 2015) -- as well as one with her old combo, Los Condenados -- Yeppers! (FTR 126LP, 2013). New to us is electronics-and-tapes-shuffler Stephanie Germaine, but she proves to be a dab hand at making sonic events wiggle in the air like some many Chinese ash-snakes. Phurnne is around five years old at this point, but they have kept a low profile until now, thinking (perhaps) that the long-form pieces they create are better suited to live performance than passive homebound listening. From my own personal viewpoint that's a crock of whale shit. The music Phurnne invents is so texturally subtle in spots you really need to be able to examine it inside a dark and quiet safe space. Their sound really only achieves its true stature when you actively listen to it (something that's not always possible in a live setting). The music is so tactile and original in the way it's layered, it kept reminding me of the one Nurse With Wound live show I caught. As with that concert, the difference between 'ordinary' (read: identifiable) sounds, and shards of pure imagination is destroyed here. Standard perceptual delineations are erased. And new terra incognito is being continuously uncovered. This is an album full of wonders. And as cool as the trio is in concert, it's very nice to have their music captured to examine at one's own leisure." --Byron Coley, 2019 Edition of 250.

SEA MOSS Bidet Dreaming LP
"First LP by this rather berserk Portland Oregon duo, made up of vocalist/electronics-scrambler Noa Ver and drummer/electronics-scamperer Zach D'Agostino. Our experience with Portland music had led us to believe it often has a mellow and/or gentle edge, but Sea Moss offer none of that. Their raucous, face-to-face approach to duo dynamism is as weirdly aggressive as anything that's ever come out the dag end of Brooklyn or Providence, and that's saying something. Using homemade electronic devices that generate vast heaps of splutter and careenage, employing a percussive technique that would make Fred Flintstone proud, and singing into a microphone that makes everything sound like someone howling curses through an elevator's intercom, Sea Moss have arrived at a modus operandi that will makes weaklings poop eggs. The wildness of their approach is most evident in live concert, where they spend all their energy hurling figurative rolling p[ins, frying pans and glottal pronouncements directly into each other's faces. But on vinyl, it's possible to ponder the structural and lyrical gambits they use to attack each other. The lyrics, at least what I think I can make out of them, explode like strings of haiku written during a particularly hectic game of Exquisite Corpse. And the instrumental portions of the tunes often sound as though they were written for a Chrome tribute concert to be performed by lighthouse foghorns. The other day, while I was playing this in the store, someone commented that the vocals reminded them of very early Guerilla Toss. I pointed out that while there might be some small surface similarities, the utter weirdness of the underlying music pretty much negated comparison. Then I threw them out. Sea Moss is doing some crazy shit. Don't beggar them with comparisons. Listen with all your holes open and pass the goddamn drool cup." --Byron Coley, 2019 Edition of 250.

MAMODE IV, REGINALD OMAS Where We Going? LP
Reginald Omas Mamode IV announces his third album Where We Going?, out on Five Easy Pieces. The album was partly recorded on a journey to the Mascarene Islands in search of family roots. Where We Going? is reflective of the search for this lineage, which branches from ancient Mauritian Maroons -- whose rich heritage, music and culture includes an unrecognized, undocumented resistance to colonialism -- through Swahili and Malagasy to sugarcane plantation Creole slave decent. Influenced by golden era hip-hop, jazz, soul, Afro, funk, Sega, and Maloya, and music from Africa, the Caribbean, South London, and US; it is in part an attempt to evoke feelings of universal love and compassion. Mamode recorded the album using various drums and drum machines, percussion instruments, Fender Rhodes, and Roland and Korg synthesizers. His two earlier albums -- 2016's self-titled debut and 2017's Children of Nu -- were warmly received, collecting critical success from Mojo ("A brand-new-retro delight"), MixMag ("Peckham beat brilliance"), Record Collector ("Equal parts D'Angelo to J Dilla"), The Wire ("Soul music turned all the way inward"), DJ Mag ("A masterpiece"), and Bandcamp ("Lifeforms that are equally steeped in hip-hop, funk, soul and jazz"). He was also nominated for "Album of the Year" at Gilles Peterson's Worldwide Awards 2017. Along with Mo Kolours, Jeen Bassa, Henry Wu, Al Dobson Jr, and Tenderlonious; he's helped forge in the 22a co-operative that The FADER calls "a kaleidoscopic patchwork of hip-hop, house, and groove investigations bound by one thread: a timeless belief in rhythm as a universal language."

JFK Weapon Design CD
CD reissue of the last album from Ramleh's Anthony Di Franco, whose long-running solo JFK project has been dedicated to the kind of concrete mixed rhythmic pummel countless others would almost kill for since the cassette network culture of the 1980s. Between then and now, JFK has had several albums released featuring either archive or his latest works at that particular time. These have been endorsed by labels such as Harbinger Sound, Peripheral, Chondritic Sound, and others plus, more importantly, have signaled a consistency in Anthony's dedication to exploring those spaces where vast blocks of sound crumble into heavily polluted rivers of anger, despair, and frustration. It's an immersive sound that, naturally, shares a little common ground with Ramleh yet emphasizes the monstrous chasms that can be drawn from a sturdy combo of bass-churn and galvanized beats primed from a nightmarish dancefloor. The CD version of Weapon Design presents ten devastating tracks, two of which did not appear on the acclaimed vinyl version from 2018 and are exclusive to this version. ED O.G & DA BULLDOGS Life Of A Kid In The Ghetto LP
RSD 2019 release, re-released. "Out of print on vinyl since 1991. The 1990s was a rich vein of classic hip-hop, especially on the East Coast, which rendered some of the greatest works from the likes of Wu-Tang Clan, Nas, Mobb Deep, and many others. Frequently lost in the genre's New York-centric history was Boston's burgeoning hip-hop scene during the 1990s, spearheaded by working class Roxbury native Edward Anderson, best known by his stage name Ed O.G. Over the course of his career, which has spanned nearly 30 years, Ed O.G has maintained an admirably strong cult following, and has gone on to work with contemporaries like RZA, KRS-One, Masta Ace, Pete Rock, and Common, while touring the world over, and producing numerous solo and collaborative albums. Ed O.G's illustrious career debuted in 1991, with the release of what is arguably his best known album, Life Of A Kid In The Ghetto, a collaboration with his crew, billed as Da Bulldogs (which was actually an acronym for 'Black United Leaders Living Directly on Grooving Sounds'), though Ed O.G was clearly the main event. An underrated classic in its own right, Life Of A Kid In The Ghetto runs a gamut of sounds ranging from the introspective conscious hip-hop of 'Be A Father To Your Child', to the whimsical boasts of 'I'm Different', to deeply political fare like the Ace & Quan and Def Jef-featuring 'Speak Upon It', plastered across a backdrop of Joe Mansfield-produced sample-heavy soundscapes, which snatched clips from deep cuts of James Brown, Roy Ayers, and The Delfonics, to name just a few. It also managed to generate Billboard-charting singles out of tracks like 'Bug-A-Boo', 'Be A Father To Your Child', and 'I Got To Have It', which would become Ed O.G's signature track, and sample fodder for 2Pac, De La Soul, and DJ Premier. Get On Down now presents Life Of A Kid In The Ghetto, an unheralded rarity of renaissance hip-hop, reissued on vinyl for the first time since 1991. The audio has been remastered from its original tapes, so every bit and piece of Ed O.G's masterpiece is crisp and clear on wax. An uncovered gem of 90s rap well worth a re-listen or first-time discovery, and a sterling representation of Boston hip-hop."

DILLINGER CB 200 LP
RSD 2019 release, re-released. "By the 1970s Reggae had spread from Jamaica and become an international phenomena. Enter Dillinger, who rose up with the El Paso Sound System as part of the second generation of Jamaican toasters. His name came from American gangster John Dillinger at the suggestion of none other than Lee Perry (who produced his first album). A deal with Island Records followed, with sessions happening at Channel One Studios with Joseph 'Jo Jo' Hoo Kim producing. Recording at Channel One in mid-70s meant Dillinger and Jo Jo were tapping into an immense talent pool in the form of The Revolutionaries, the studio's in-house band. CB 200 features contributions from Earl 'Chinna' Smith, Aston 'Family Man' Barrett, Ansel Collins, Sly Dunbar, and Tommy McCook among others. The release also brought forth the career defining cut 'Cokane In My Brain', a hit record on an international basis. Despite the success of CB 200 and 'Cokane In My Brain' the release has remained out of print in all formats since the mid-1980s. Get On Down is about to change that, with their Record Store Day 2019 reissue of this too often overlooked Reggae masterpiece."

SOL SEPPY The Bells Of 1 2 CD
Sol Seppy's The Bells Of 1 2 is the debut outing from the heart and mind of Sophie Michalitsianos. Born in England, and growing up between here and Australia she began writing songs at five years old. At sixteen, Sophie began writing music for television documentaries and swapping her vocal abilities for free studio time at the EMI studios in Australia. She received various offers from labels, but none which gave her the creative freedom she desired so Sophie politely declined. She was accepted into the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, where she studied contemporary composition and orchestration, she's a classically trained pianist and cellist. At twenty-three Sophie moved to the States and not long after touch down received word that Mark Linkous of Sparklehorse had heard her music and wanted her to join them for their tour with Radiohead. Sophie obliged, and afterwards found herself contributing to Sparklehorse's albums, Good Morning Spider (1998) and It's A Wonderful Life (2001). After her time with Sparklehorse, Sophie continued pursuing numerous musical avenues until she could afford a move to upstate New York and set up her own studio. After a few false starts, the catalysts for The Bells Of 1 2 finally materialized into a cohesive vision. As the sole voice and creator behind Sol Seppy, Sophie embraced the roles of writer, performer, engineer, and producer. The album's celestial romanticism glows in Sophie's enchanting vocals, reminiscent of Mazzy Star and the Cocteau Twins, each track a channel to some uncanny territory. "Slo Fuzz" beckons with an affectionately plaintive chorus bubbling over ethereal melody lines. "Wonderland" tells the story of an artist with the sinking feeling that a change will never come. "Come Running" is a curious ode to companionship. "Enter 2 Human" plays out as one of the most heartrending incitements in recent years. Each song is more than enough to get lost in. This enchanting album is prismatic by nature, "It's the discovery of beauty that inspires me the most," she says, clandestinely hinting at an endless impetus for the songs of Sol Seppy.

PILGRIM, THE Walking Into The Forest CD
Gabriele Fiori -- already frontman of Rome-based outfits Black Rainbows and Killer Boogie and a key figure in Europe's heavy underground as the head of the Heavy Psych Sounds label and booking agency -- was not exactly lacking for things to do. And yet, a couple years back, The Pilgrim started to nebulously take shape as an idea for a solo-project, something different than the hard-driving psychedelia and garage heavy rock for which he'd already been so revered. It wasn't until January 2018 that he really got to putting songs together, but the end result on Walking Into The Forest is a space-folk release with a personality unto itself. Songs like opener "Peace Of Mind" evoke some of Fiori's more rocking side, while "Sunset In The Desert" feels like an ode to the acoustic album Kyuss never made, and side B, which starts with the Hawkwind cover "Brainstorm" and ends with the moody strum of "Suite #2" -- originally from Void Generator's 2004 debut EP; when Fiori was in the band -- a cosmic drift and textures that nonetheless remain accessible and organic thanks to their acoustic foundation. "The main point in common with Black Rainbows is the diversity of the songs," Fiori explains. "You have mind-dreams like 'Dragonfly' or 'Sailor,' or the more folk rock 'Peace Of Mind,' passing through space with 'The Time You Wait' and the melodic-melancholic 'When I Call Your Name.'" In completing the arrangements, Fiori turned to Black Rainbows drummer Filippo Ragazzoni, and as he says, "Songs came out so spontaneously and easy. I always played acoustic guitar and wanted to push further on this path. The songwriting, rehearsing and recording approach was so different from usual Rainbows or Boogie style, both to me and Filippo for drums, because all the instruments needed to be played smoothly, softly." With Walking Into The Forest, Fiori evokes a sound that is both classic and fresh, melodically rich and creatively constructed. It is a new outlet for Fiori that demands spiritual as well as auditory engagement, and an all-things-permissible sonic context that one can only hope The Pilgrim continues to explore. LP versions available on standard black vinyl, orange splatter vinyl, or yellow and red marbled vinyl.

BJORK, BRANT Keep Your Cool CD
Heavy Psych Sounds present a reissue of Brant Bjork's Keep Your Cool, originally released in 2003. Keep Your Coolmarks itself as easily one of Brant Bjork's most accessible and catchiest album. A direct continuation of the raw, straight-to-the-point rocker that was the Brant Bjork and The Operators record (2002), it also brings back some of the more relaxed, levitating aura of Jalamanta (1999) resulting into a best-of-both worlds scenario. Starting out with funky guitar rhythms and congas "Hey, Monkey Boy" is a short and entertaining opener that sets up the stage to the other tracks. The songwriting for the most part is as about simple as it can get, with mid-paced, often blues/funk influenced riffs leading them, accompanied with Bjork's relaxed, swagger-filled vocals. But don't mistake this for laziness because these are well-written and effective riffs that are delivered with crystal clear precision. Thus, with songs "Johnny Called" or "Gonna Make The Scene", Brant proves that you don't have to go for ten+ minute long, abstract feedback-driven jamming to deliver good stoner rock. A good head-banger, a soulful ballad, a relaxing, acoustic guitar piece: Keep Your Cool has all of them. Not to mention sweet guitar licks, a beefy production and a great, positive vibe that oozes from the '70s and weed (especially in the Cream-like "I Miss My Chick"). With eight songs and 33 minutes it's short, sweet, delivers the punch and keeps up its replay value high. Keep Your Cool is like every Brant Bjork record: The honest sound and music of a dude that you would want to hang out and party with.

TAVARES, RODRIGO Congo LP
2018 release. Hive Mind Records present Congo, the debut album from Brazilian guitarist and composer Rodrigo Tavares. Maintaining a meditative mood across its nine instrumental pieces, Congo blends composition and improvisation with subtly experimental yet sophisticated arrangements that evoke the mood and rhythms of classic Brazilian artists such as Joa?o Gilberto, Dorival Caymmi, Tom Jobim, Milton Nascimento, and Caetano Veloso. Rodrigo's work draws on a lifetime of immersive listening and diverse influences, and on Congo you can hear elements of jazz, post rock, minimalist composition, and disparate global sounds melt together to create a deep listening experience that falls between genres and willfully defies categorization. From reverb drenched solo guitar pieces such as "Cidade Sol I" to expansive full group pieces such as "De Roda" or "A Raposa E O Corvo", Rodrigo has crafted a lush sound world that rewards exploration and will appeal to fans of music as diverse as Joshua Abrams and Natural Information Society, Collocutor, BadBadNotGood, Slint, or late Talk Talk, as much as it does to lovers of classic Brazilian music. Accompanying Rodrigo on guitar is Pedro Santana on the acoustic bass, Felipe Continentino on drums, Felipe Bastos handling the percussion, Breno Mendonc?a on saxophone, and Fred Selva on vibraphone. The genesis of Congo was a transformative road trip through Brazil which took in a Sun City Girls show in a remote former gay club, and a visit to a spiritual healer named John of God in a faraway central Brazilian town named Abadia?nia. The end of the trip marked the beginning of a fertile creative period for Rodrigo: "I decided that I would try to forge, in my own way, from my references, from my universe and from the collective intelligence and sensibility that surrounded me, fundamental melodies, repetitive, minimal, hypnotic rhythmic and harmonic patterns that would be crossed by some sort of improvisation, something that referred to a reality that existed before my individual history, that linked to the life of other places and other times."

EL HASSANI, MOULAY AHMED Atlas Electric 2LP
2018 release. Hive Mind Records present a double-LP compilation of songs by Moulay Ahmed El Hassani, a master of modern Moroccan music, who updates traditional folk forms with drum machines, autotune, and incredible psychedelic guitar. Moulay Ahmed El Hassani is practically unknown outside of his home country of Morocco where he's released over 50 albums on cassette and CD over the past 30 years, however Hive Mind Records seek to remedy that situation with the release of this compilation featuring songs originally released on Ahmed's own label, Sawt el Hassani, between 2006 and 2014. Ahmed writes his own songs, plays all instruments himself, records and self produces at his home studio in Beni Mellal. His unique sound takes influence from a variety of Moroccan folk forms, particularly the Izlan and Ahidous styles of the Amazigh people of the mid-Atlas region. Ahmed has blended these styles with the rai and chaabi that were popular across the country through his youth. The resulting sound is like a twenty-first century folk music for a people caught somewhere between a vision of their own idealized pastoral past and a turbo charged, technologically driven urban future. Ahmed has embraced new musical technologies and his songs are made up of complex, polyrhythmic drum machine patterns, subtle loops, washes of new age synth, heavily autotuned male and female duet vocals, and his signature psychedelic microtonal guitar playing. His songs are sometimes gentle and melancholic, and sometimes more upbeat, but always deeply lyrical and melodic, and all feature lyrics in Amazigh and Arabic that deal with social issues and universal themes of love and loss. There's really very little that can be said in a press release to can prepare you for the sound of Moulay Ahmed ElHassani's music, other than that you're unlikely to have heard anything quite like it before.

ARABIA, LAWRENCE Lawrence Arabia's Singles Club CD
Whilst the sleeves of many artists are adorned with well-worn hearts as they release their complete albums into the world, as New Zealand born singer-songwriter Lawrence Arabia, James Wilne's latest project offers a rare glimpse into the creative process through 12 separate Lawrence Arabia's Singles Club releases -- now available on one handy LP and bringing together an extensive list of VIP members. One day in late 2017, at his home in Auckland, James sent a message on a whim and suddenly found himself in an email tête-à-tête with Van Dyke. A "lullaby for neurotic adults", 'Just Sleep (Your Shame Will Keep)" was originally written for Arabia's psychedelic comedy podcast sensation, "Mysterious Secrets Of Uncle Bertie's Botanarium," but took on a new lease of life with the addition of Van Dyke's piano, accordion, scratch woodwind, and double bass. Constructed in Lawrence Arabia's revered bedroom recording style, each Singles Club offering was built with ruthless ambition. "Everything's Minimal", "Cecily", "Meaningless Words", and "Oppositional Democracy" began through the course of the year and were completed in the following months whilst other songs were revived from rough demos that followed 2016's Absolute Truth as quickly and instinctually as possible. Bound with one seamless invisible thread, the album stands as a body of work capturing a moment in time. Like those buildings with their structure on the outside, Lawrence Arabia's Singles Club exposes the inner-workings of what it takes to create a record and offers any member a one-way ticket to Dreamsville. "I'm delighted at how it all ended up flowing," he tells. "I treated it like making a mixtape in extreme slow motion, so tried to make each song respond to the previous one the way you might when choosing a DJ set on the fly. Except this set was one year long, only twelve songs, and the songs had to be written and produced before they could be played." Lawrence Arabia has previously released albums on Bella Union and Flying Nun.Van Dyke Parks on the project: "As inviting as the honk of the Good Humor Man of the '50s, who toodled his ice-cream truck through neighborhoods of my youth. Such tune-smithery simply isn't for tyros. It takes real savvy to pull it off. James Milne is equipped for such craft. I was delighted to feel attached to such a talented work, a notch above, and so plainly fanciful. Dreamsville!"

CANDY SNATCHERS, THE Moronic Pleasures LP
Hound Gawd! Records releases the "new" The Candy Snatchers album Moronic Pleasures. Taking their name from an obscure, bizarre, and trashy '70s horror flick late one night after drinking heavily, The Candy Snatchers formed in 1992 in Virginia Beach. They are a mix of '60s garage, the Detroit sound and late '70s punk with the energy and intensity of any hardcore band. Besides the insanity that ensued as soon as they hit the stage -- breaking bottles, cutting themselves with the glass, blood everywhere, setting the bass on fire while being played, drums were routinely collided with and obliterated -- the band played amazingly well, with great songs in the vein of Dead Boys, early Misfits, Radio Birdman and The Saints. The band's end was because of the passing of guitarist and co-creator, Matthew Odietus in 2008. His death marked the end of an era for the band, leaving the rock 'n' roll community reeling. In 1997, with explosive new drummer, Sergio Ponce, they had written an impressive amount of new songs and were ready to start tracking them to tape for their second album. 19 songs were laid down at Compactor Studio; 17 planned for titled Moronic Pleasures and two slated for a 7". The 17 album tracks were given only a rough mix and dubbed onto cassette for the band to review; the two 7" tracks were given a proper, final mix and sent to the record label. After they did the basic tracks, Matt went back and added second rhythm guitar and solos. Vocals, same thing; Larry belted out one song after another -- they simply played the songs from a setlist. Then they mixed and off they went. For some inexplicable reason that has gone to the grave, Matt rejected this session. The second attempt to record was a quick stop at Andy Slob's basement studio in Cincinnati, Ohio, while they were on tour. The band was supposedly unhappy with the overall sound and rejected these sessions as their new album. With both attempted sessions rejected, the band eventually headed back to NYC to re-record most of the songs for the third time. This session became their second album, Human Zoo (1998). Moronic Pleasures as recorded at Compactor Studio is the Candy Snatchers at their zenith; the performances are stronger and the feel of the songs is sleazier. Includes download.

VA Too Slow To Disco NEO - En France CD
The perfect soundtrack of a very first "french kiss", of an early morning sunset by the Seine Songs to relax to or to fall in love with, songs to dance to or to dream with the soundtrack of an extraordinary life -- your life, maybe NEO is the next chapter for the critically-acclaimed compilation series Too Slow To Disco. For DJ Supermarkt it was time to explore the exciting new, modern smooth sounds of the present. With TSTD NEO - En France, How Do You Are? Recordings go to the exciting European capital of all things mellow, elegant, slightly erotic, and pop. The compilation contains 17 tracks -- some of them never released and exclusive for this compilation -- featuring two godfathers and grand seigneurs: the legendary Bertrand Burgalat, head honcho of the Tricatel label, musician, composer, arranger, producer, and the electro-disco wizard Yuksek who also runs the infamous Partyfine label. The others are the kids of Michel Legrand, Les Jeunes Gens Modernes, and the French Touch, they sometimes try to marry "Debussy to a disco beat", they've all got this blue melancholy which you only find in the French streets, they sing in in their mother tongue or in their so very charming English accent without any complexes. They're boys and girls. Duos (Bleu Toucan, Poom, or Weekend Affair...), bands (L'Impératrice, Cléa Vincent, and her friends), collectives (the elusive Catastrophe) or solo artists (Jean Tonique, Lomboy, Magnüm, Saint DX...) mix candid melodies and Gainsbourgienne basslines, electro arrangements, and sensual grooves. There are funky guitars licks and -- as usual with TSTD -- way too many saxophones (it sounds like Duran Duran's "Rio"), slap basses, and some vocoders, even features a great ironic use of the modern autotune. It's the perfect soundtrack of a very first "french kiss", of an early morning sunset by the Seine -- or by the sea (you choose) --, of a late bar evening session, sipping red wine or a dry martini cocktail -- once again, you choose. They're songs to relax to or to fall in love with, songs to dance to or to dream with. They're the soundtrack of an extraordinary life. Your life, maybe. Also features Ricky Hollywood, Claap! & Santana, Polo & Pan, DJ Supermarkt, Jack Tennis, and Paradis. Contains three exclusive, unreleased tracks. CD version includes booklet with liner notes.

KUKANGENDAI Palm LP
"Kukangendai is a kickass rock trio from Kyoto (Tokyo transplants). When I first hear this band live I was instantly transfixed by their minimalist yet illusory primitive, polyrhythmic, and structural, memory evoking rock narratives. Their energy is completely and transparently palpable yet handled with restraint of the pleasure of a disciplined form dealing with time and articulation. They are a power trio of bass, drums, and guitar but the music they play is as much the limbic system of a forest than it is a geode. They started in 2006. They left Tokyo to Kyoto and started the cult venue Soto ('Outside') 'to listen to music they hadn't heard yet' a few years later. They collaborated with Ryuichi Sakamoto last year. They reminded me of James Brown on a heavy binge of Bastro, there's a deep current of both archaic musical tastes and the human desire for articulating that archaism in there, but you shake your ass and get the shouting in... in a punk basement... 13th century version of Breadwinner, the bare soul version. I'm honored and proud to work with this tribe, and to count them amongst friends." --Stephen O'Malley, February 2019, ParisKukangendai is: Junya Noguchi - guitar, vocal; Keisuke Koyano - bass; Hideaki Yamada - drums.Recorded and mixed by Bunsho Nisikawa. LOS ORIENTALES DE PARAMONGA Fiesta En Oriente LP
Los Orientales de Paramonga began their musical journey when they were school students in the province of Barranca, Peru. The members included Maximiliano Chávez Saavedra on the guitar, handling arranging and composing duties; José 'Huachito' Castillo on the electric bass; Daniel Guillén on the timbales; Manuel Chiriboga taking on the percussion duties and "Cote" Duplex Dextre on the congas. At the beginning of their career, they were influenced by the guitars of Enrique Delgado and Manzanita, pioneers of the Peruvian instrumental Cumbia. Later, they experimented with the wah-wah effects pedal under the influence of Augusto Lucho y Sus Satélites. Los Orientales de Paramonga, with Maximiliano Chávez as their leader, combined all these influences and forged a new sound that made them unique. It was in the year 1970 when they started recording after being discovered by the musical producer Alberto Maraví and together released their first 45 single that included the international hit "Lobos al Escape" and later released their first LP. In 1974, Los Orientales de Paramonga recorded their second and last LP in the legendary record label Infopesa, titled Fiesta En Oriente which included haunting psychedelic guitar-driven tunes such as "Sonia La Sexy", "La Momia", "Guinda Sabrosa", and many more. As the years passed by, this fascinating LP started to cultivate an immense appeal and following among music lovers and collectors all over the globe, becoming the most-valued Peruvian LP in the world and the most sought-after vinyl ever of Infopesa's catalog on sites such as Discogs and Ebay. Now, 45 years since it was first released, Fiesta En Oriente makes a triumphal return in a special vinyl reissue that also includes "Lobos al Escape", the first hit of the band as a bonus track and also serves as an homage to Maximiliano Chávez, the mastermind behind the band who left us in 2012 leaving behind an extraordinary repertoire that will live on forever in our hearts and minds. Reworked at Infopesa's studio by Aldo Montalvo under the direction of Juan Ricardo and Alberto Maraví, who produced and oversaw the original mastering of the record in 1974. Packaged in artwork that uses the original cover of the LP reinterpreted by well-known Peruvian collage master Yerko Zlatar. Includes Spanish/English liner notes.

In addition, Liebman and Beirach have frequently performed and recorded as a duo. Several of Beirach's compositions -- "Leaving" and "Elm", for instance -- have found their way into the jazz standard repertoire. Wikipedia including discography (in six languages).

HECKER, TIM Anoyo CD
"Anoyo ('the world over there') draws from the same sessions which led to the 2018 work Konoyo but rendered starker, solemn, and stripped back, with more of a naturalist tint. Tim Hecker's processing here moves in veiled ways, soft refractions and whispered shrouds woven within improvisational sessions of traditional gagaku interplay, evoking a sense of vaulted space, temples at dawn, shredded silk fluttering in the rafters. This is boldly barren music, skeletal and sculptural, shaped from wood, wind, strings, and mist. Modern yet ancient, delicate and desolate, Anoyo inverts its predecessor to compellingly conjure a parallel world of illusion, solitude, and eternal return."

"Ljudverket's 11th release is a four-tracker from a man of many sounds and personas, Vesa-Matti Kivioja. Here, operating under his given name, he delivers four tracks of experimental dub and electronica, taking the listener from his/her living room all the way to a dimly lit dance floor in an alien planet, with a sound system capable of producing frequencies way below human hearing and a smoke machine filled with unknown substances. 'These are recycled patterns forming sounds which describe minerals and stones. The use of stone has had a huge impact on the cultural and technological development of the human race. Often composed of grains of minerals, in nature, more than one substitution may be found in the same mineral. It can be made of one element or more elements combined together. A hard, solid, non-metallic, naturally occurring inorganic substance. It is found in a wide variety of geological locations. It's not made by humans.'"

GOLD, THE The Gold LP
LP version. The first mystery: The Gold. Where does this name come from? Maybe it's because these guys are like very valuable treasure, still hidden underground, and nobody has found them yet. It may also be that, as the great Little Richard once said, there are artists who have the strange ability to turn gold into shit -- just remember what Pat Boone did with his songs -- but on the contrary there are also those who transform everything that falls in into their hands into a brand-new shiny gold ingot. This, for example, is the amazing case of The Gold. A case of joyful alchemy that pays homage to The New York Dolls, Johnny Thunders and the Heartbreakers, The Rolling Stones, or The Stooges -- no less -- but simply, embracing the spontaneous energy of rock and roll. The second mystery: How is this possible? The answer is in the sum of the talents of Kurt Baker (guitar, vocals) and Marky Las Vegas (bass, vocals) -- founders of the group --, Oky Von Stoky (drums) and Mark O'Flaherty (guitar), guys in permanent combustion, fueled by a long-term passion, not suitable for upstarts or amateurs. And it turns out that these four golden men write songs like daggers. On top of that, their live shows are abrasive and fresh at the same time, their guitars scream, and their rhythm, in its right measure, is always one step away from the brink of the abyss. The third mystery: How is this possible NOW? Perhaps it's a matter of poetic justice, maybe. In these times of pre-cooked, tired and stale fashions offering few surprises, their rawness is appreciated and more importantly needed. There is no other group like The Gold. Hidden, about to be found. Mystery solved. Produced by Mike Mariconda.

GEBRUDER TEICHMANN, ENSEMBLE EXTRAKTE & SANDEEP BHAGWATI Iterationen - Resonant Responses To A Live Concert CD
Iterationen ("Iterations") is a musical experiment that juggled artistic processes. How does music resonate through other music? What happens when the game of Chinese Whispers meets a dynamic feedback loop? In a live concert in Berlin, Ensemble Extrakte -- a trans-traditional ensemble led by Sandeep Bhagwati that unites musical folk, jazz, and art music traditions from India, Korea, Syria, China, Bulgaria, Armenia, the US, and Europe -- plays to music in their headphones: they interpret pioneering techno and electronic tracks put on by Berlin-based Brothers Teichmann (or Gebrüder Teichmann). But definitely not in the sense of "Beatles go Classic": they do not simply echo the melodies and harmonies, rather, inspired by the energy and playfulness of the tracks, they improvise a resonant response, transforming and filtering the electronic sound they hear through their traditional instruments and musical expressions. The DJ and electronic music duo Gebrüder Teichmann then feed this concert recording into their electronic laboratory, using their electronic ears, their instruments machines, and computers to discover a new layer of resonant responses. They reverse, enhance, re-compose the improvisations of the Extrakte musicians, finding new connections in their sounds. Iterationen is an ongoing project, a creative love affair between traditional and electronic music making -- this album is the second step. All compositions and improvisations: Ensemble Extrakte; Working scores: Sandeep Bhagwati; Remixes, edits and reinterpretations: Gebrüder Teichmann. In 2014, Ensemble Extrakte and Gebrüder Teichmann met for intense listening of a personal selection of early electronic club music in preparation for their concert "Iterations". The idea was to carefully discover the mechanisms how this music works and translate them into playing techniques for the ensemble. During the performance at Radialsystem V on November 14, 2014 in Berlin, the ensemble played a live-interpretation of a "Silent DJ-Mix" by Gebrüder Teichmann, that only the musicians could hear in their headphones. The concert also included a section with flexible multiple metronomes by Sandeep Bhagwati and a section with samples from the Klangarchiv of the Ethnologische Museum Berlin, processed by Gebrüder Teichmann. The two-track recording of this concert was then edited, reinterpreted and remixed by Gebrüder Teichmann at their studio and put back into a new format: the CD Iterationen - Resonant Responses To A Live-Concert, carefully muffled with a beautiful designed cover by Brenda Alamilia and containing a 24-page booklet which includes a conversation by Sandeep Bhagwati, along with Andi and Hannes Teichmann.

MULLER MEETS THE NILE PROJECT, WOLF Wolf Muller Meets The Nile Project 12"
"In January 2016 arts and music organisation Santuri East Africa invited guest producer Jan Schulte to join the Nile Project gathering in Aswan, Egypt -- an intensive two-week musical experiment featuring musicians drawn from all around the Nile Basin that functioned as both a creative cauldron for cross-border collaboration, and a forum for artists and cultural activists to discuss the issues affecting the Nile river. Wolf Mu?ller aka Jan Schulte has been a resident of Dusseldorf's era-defining Salon des Amateurs for many years, releasing wildly inventive and dance music under various monikers -- from his birth name to Wolf Mu?ller, Bufiman and his Young Wolf collaboration with Young Marco. Schulte's feel for off kilter sounds and rhythms and a playful approach to the sometimes po-faced world of dance music have resulted in some incredibly well received releases (Instrumentalmusik Von Der Mitte Der World and the compilation Tropical Drums of Deutschland being prime examples). Santuri East Africa is an organisation set up to connect musicians and producers from around the globe, a process of co-collaboration that has led to some highly well received releases on Soundway (Msafiri Zawose) Sofrito (Auntie Flo's The Soniferous Garden) and On the Corner (Makadem and Mugwisa). Clocking in at a shade over 15 minutes, A-side 'Mabomba Dance' gradually layers Kasiva Mutua's needle-sharp percussion over a deep analogue bass pulse, building into a hypnotic dancefloor workout. The B-side sees erstwhile Owiny Sigoma Band collaborator Rapasa Nyatrapasa showcase his Nyatiti harp before delving into an almost Afrobeat-esque slice of afro-minimalism. The EP rounds off with Adel Mekha's stellar vocals over traditional Nubian percussion."

TAPSCOTT WITH THE PAN-AFRIKAN PEOPLES ARKESTRA, HORACE Flight 17 2LP
Outernational Sounds presents a cornerstone document from the Los Angeles jazz underground, Flight 17 -- the first appearance on record of the legendary Pan-Afrikan Peoples Arkestra, led by their founder and mastermind, Horace Tapscott. Available on vinyl for the first time in 40 years. The Arkestra would allow the creativity in the community to come together, would allow people to recognize each other as one people. Horace Tapscott's Pan-Afrikan Peoples Arkestra (P.A.P.A.) was one of the most transformative, forward-thinking and straight-up heavy big bands to have played jazz in the 1960s and 1970s. If P.A.P.A. doesn't have the interstellar rep of that other famous Arkestra, and if the name Tapscott doesn't ring bells like Monk or Tyner, there's a reason why: in an industry dominated by record labels, a band that doesn't record doesn't count. And the Pan-Afrikan Peoples Arkestra didn't record for nearly twenty years. But recording success was never their concern -- they weren't about that. First formed as the Underground Musicians Association in the early 1960s, Tapscott always wanted his group to be a community project. From their base in Watts, UGMA got down at the grassroots. The group was renamed the Pan-Afrikan Peoples Arkestra in 1971, and soon after they established a monthly residency at the Immanuel United Church of Christ which ran for over a decade, while still playing all over LA and beyond. But they never released a note of music. It was the intervention of fan Tom Albach that finally got them on wax. Determined that their work should be documented, Albach founded Nimbus Records specifically to release the music of Tapscott, the Arkestra, and the individuals that comprised it. The first recording sessions in early 1978 yielded enough material for two albums, and the first release was Flight 17. From the surging avant-gardism of Herbie Baker's title track to the laidback summertime groove of Kamonta Lawrence Polk's "Maui", or Roberto Miranda's up-tempo Latin jam "Horacio", Flight 17 showcased the radical voices of the Arkestra's members. Led out by Tapscott's hard-swinging piano, this is the first flight on wax of the West Coasts' foundational community big band -- energized, hip, and together. Contains two tracks previously only available on the 1997 CD edition: "Coltrane Medley" and "Village Dance", recorded live at the Immanuel United Church of Christ. 180 gram vinyl pressing by Pallas. Fully licensed from Nimbus West founder Tom Albach.

HARRY PUSSY Ride A Dove LP
Reissue of Harry Pussy's Ride A Dove, originally released on Siltbreeze in 1996. "By 1996, with one LP, a handful of 7"s, and a couple dozen gigs under their collective belts, Harry Pussy had thoroughly scrambled the mid-90s scuzz-rock ecosystem. Their acclaimed first LP, described by David Keenan as 'a black hole that devoured genre and flattened any attempt to classify it,' fused Japanese noise, '80s hardcore and post-Ayler jazz into a dense, white-hot ball of punk anger and insanity. The band's newly expanded trio lineup of Bill Orcutt, Adris Hoyos and Mark Feehan toured with Dead C, Sebadoh, and Sonic Youth. Thurston played their video on MTV's 120 Minutes. Nirvana gave them shout outs. Everyone expected the sophomore Harry Pussy LP would be more of the same, a logical next step, a synapse-melting punk orgasm that would shatter the coke-bottle spectacles of noise stoners, record store clerks, and college radio DJs across the USA. Instead, we got Ride A Dove: a 30-minute, tempo-less, musique concrète collage of feedback, whiny Sonic Youth fans, overdriven room tone, hijacked jungle beats, unhinged screaming, and the near-constant squall of the self-oscillating low-pass filter on Orcutt's Korg MS-20. Recorded on Sony Walkman and Tascam Portastudio, mixed through a RAT distortion pedal, then chopped and scrambled with SoundEdit 16, it took to new heights the Siltbreeze tradition of terrorizing mastering engineers by burying everything with shitty post-production (cf. Jim Shepard's Radio Shack reverb on his Picking Through the Wreckage With a Stick LP). Thanks to the single unbanded groove on each side (and similarly unindexed CD), the relationship of Ride A Dove's 'songs' to its listed song titles -- which allude to Michael Jackson, the Bee Gees, and most of all, Black Flag, whose 'Rise Above' is echoed by the malaprop of the album title -- was decidedly obscure. One might be forgiven for characterizing this career anti-move as a simple challenge, an 'ok, sell THIS' to an unsuspecting distributor -- Matador Records, who surely had no idea what they were getting into when they scooped up Siltbreeze for a manufacturing and distribution deal -- or to fans naively anticipating simple catharsis. Rather, Ride A Dove is an intensely personal document of a disintegrating marriage and band; a snapshot of an era when noise groups were unexpectedly emerging from complete darkness into mere shadow; a diary of questionable decisions regarding marital fidelity and drug consumption. It's a raw, vulnerable record that is more Rumours (1977) than Metal Machine Music (1975). In the aftermath of Ride A Dove, and the near-apocalyptic Harry Pussy/Shadow Ring/Charalambides tour that followed it, life went on. Bill and Adris split up, guitarist Mark Feehan decamped, and Harry Pussy soldiered on for a few more records, including the sleeper double LP Let's Build a Pussy (EMEGO 146LP), which perhaps stands closer to Ride A Dove's high-register wail and conceptual monomania than any other of the band's recordings. As for Ride A Dove itself, the intervening decades has made it almost fashionable, yet harshly adorned in a raggedness that's as cozy as a fiberglass sweater." --Tom Carter Adris Hoyos - drums; Bill Orcutt - guitar; Mark Feehan - guitar.

VA People! Let's Freak Out: The Irish Rock Rebellion 1963-1970 5CD BOX
Particles presents the first ever box set anthology of Ireland's 1960s rock music scene. Only two long-out-of-print compilations have ever emerged to profile Ireland's rock roots, making this anthology doubly inviting. From the R&B/blues scene in Belfast to the late 1960s psychedelia of Dublin, People! Let's Freak Out reveals a wider account of the beat scene, and its transition into psychedelia and blues rock. While Ireland has never been given equal acclaim to that of its neighboring England, it nevertheless produced some of the most iconic and influential bands of the period. As Van Morrison and Them were leaving Belfast for London, a slew of new hopefuls arrived to establish their own niche under the nose of the dominant showband scene. Compiled here, are 125 original recordings featuring various groups from Eire and Northern Ireland, some of whom went on to huge success in the 1970s. From Ian Whitcomb to Eire Apparent, The Bye-Laws to the Belfast Gypsies and Gentry to Sugar Shack, People! Let's Freak Out is a fascinating account of Ireland's more obscure and vibrant music scene of the 1960s. Spanning five discs with rare and previously unreleased recordings, a plethora of memorabilia and expansive liners housed in an 88-page, full-color booklet, People! Let's Freak Out offers an excellent companion to similar anthologies such as Nuggets, Rubble, and Buried Alive.Features The Wheels, Gary Street, The Creatures, Ian Whitcomb & Bluesville, The Mad Lads, The Spectres, The Greenbeats, Dickie Rock and The Miami Showband, The Royal Showband Waterford, The Alleykatz, The Chessmen, The Debonaires, The Banshees, Margo and The Marvettes, Sean Fagan Pacific Showband, The People, Joe Dolan and The Drifters, Just Five, Ottilie Patterson, The Blue Aces, The Bats, The Luvin' Kind, The Belfast Gypsies, Pan Pipers, The Movement, The Bye-Laws, The Boomerangs, The Stellas, The Wheel-A-Ways, The Interns, The Kingbees, Moses K & The Prophets, The Deep Set, Gene and The Gents, The Rising Sons, The Strangers, Hat & Tie, The Finnavons, The Concords, Jon Ledingham, The Carpetbaggers, Wheels Of Time, Freaks Of Nature, Dreams, The Real McCoy, Terry & The Trixons, The Gentry, Derek and The Freshmen, The Universals, The Trixons, The Arrivals, The Jacobites, Eire Apparent, Danny Hughes, Butch Moore, Tina & The Mexicans, Mellow Candle, The Pattersons, Gumm, Peter Law & Sound Of The Pacific, The Footappers, Granny's Intentions, The Philosophers, The Freshmen, Simon Scott and The Plattermen, Orange Machine, The Poets, Them, Andwella's Dream, Skid Row, David McWilliams, The Crypt, Sugar Shack, and Taxi.

VA Girls In The Garage Volume 7 LP
Past & Present presents Girls In The Garage Volume 7, the seventh volume of a series of garage rock compilations focusing on female artists. Prior to Joan Jett, Patti Smith, Courtney Love, there were the girls in the garage. Like their male counterparts had discovered, being in a band was not only cool and alluring, it was sexual and ultimately political. The garage band was a medium that enabled their voices to be heard; these girls weren't going to be kept in the kitchen. Like Pebbles did for the boys, Girls In The Garage captures the raw essence of dreams played out through guitars, drums, mics and amplifiers. Prevailing gender roles would be tested as rock'n'roll became someone else's domain: the girls! Although it's been said that it was rare for a girl group to play on their own records in the mid-1960s, they were not alone. On both sides of the Atlantic, cynical producers largely employed session musicians, afraid of any conceivable faults at the hands of inexperienced groups, male and female. The ones who didn't were visionaries that believed in a new generation's ambitions and capabilities. As the rise of a female presence in rock 'n' roll rose through the appearance of figures such as The Vejtables's Jan Errico, The Honeycombs's Honey Lantree, and the Maureen Tucker (whose deliberately primal technique is such an undervalued part of the Velvet Underground's sound), so too did the rise of all-female bands. Liverpool's Liverbirds and Hull's Mandy And The Girlfriends gave weight to the idea that it was 'normal' and paved the way for likeminded girls to drop the dream boy and pick up the guitar. The prevailing attitude amongst both major and independent record labels was never going to be inspiring or welcoming, but like the wailing blues mamas such as Memphis Minnie or Jessie Mae Hemphill, times were-a-changin' and girls didn't just want to have fun. Emerging groups such as The Pleasure Seekers, White Boots, Ace Of Cups, Bittersweets, and The Luv'd Ones were playing rock 'n' roll on their own terms whilst breaking new ground; whether they were trying to or not. Features The Nightingales, Little Frankie, The Lawrence Comp, The Weekends, Tammy & The Bachelors, Nai Bonet, The Uncalled Four, Tremelons, Lori Sanders, The She's, The Pussycats, Gayle Haness, Cidney Sza'vee, Manuela Und Drafi, Jacqueline Taieb, Sunday & The Menn, The Indigos, and The Honeybees. 180 gram green vinyl; Edition of 1000 (hand-numbered).

LA BATTERIA II CD
Four years since their first self-titled release (PNY 3304CD/LP, 2015), La Batteria, one of the most brilliant Italian bands in the field of instrumental music, are back with their brand new second album. Seventy minutes of music spanning 18 tracks released on Penny Records. Against the rules of today's market and more in the '70s classic rock tradition, here is a consistent double-album carrying both the band's typical cinematic atmospheres and the four members individual experiences and personal taste. It's a sort of musical journey where different ages and genres melt together within the Roman band's unique style. Through the various tracks you can easily find the complex writing of Fonderia (the other band of members Bultrini, Vicarelli, and Pecorelli) and the peculiar rhythmic groove of Nerattini's hip-hop productions, and the endless cross-contamination coming from their common project of the Orchestra di Piazza Vittorio. Prog-rock, funk, hip-hop, classical music, electronics, Latin grooves, Italo-disco, psychedelia, and hard rock, all perfectly melt together in a fascinating new work which places the band in the great Italian tradition of music for images, luckily far from being a mere copy of an unrepeatable age. "Listening to 'Chimera' by La Batteria: authentic, cinematic, beautiful." --Barry Adamson

STONEWALL Stonewall LP
"First officially licensed release ever; Limited to 500 copies. 'So you're addicted to hard rock from 1972 and getting tired of LPs that don't take you for the full ride. You check out tons of 'em. Stonewall? Hmmm... only the most potent and rare stuff can get you off nowadays. Kicks intense enough to remind you why you got into it in the first place. Jams you can't wait to lay on your friends so uncontrollably alive you know it's gonna wipe 'em out. Yeah... you really need Stonewall. It's ritual time. Drop the needle into the groove. Side One. Stoned swaggering confidence, attitude and energy right out of the gate. Stonewall immediately take charge with 'Right On', an 'incite-the-audience, invoke-the-jams' renegade rocker akin to 'Are You Ready?' by Grand Funk or 'Combination of the Two' by Big Brother conceptually but taken way further. I can't say more without some sort of spoiler alert. To mess with your head, after a near cluster-fuck with the audience in the opening track comes 'Solitude'. No problem. 'Solitude, it do not bother me... drifting from mountains to the endless sea... oh, I'm flying by myself, I don't a-need nobody else'. After a savage encounter with 'Bloody Mary' the side ends with my favorite track. As soon as the guitar riff ignites 'Outer Spaced' you know you're gonna get crushed. The singer is taunting 'hey baby this ain't no come on to impress you" tossing purple planets and pure white galaxies into the mix and sneering like an outcast "I'm out in the wind and rain and snow, breaking may back!' Attitude. Climax. 'Outer space... God I'm out of my mind!' If that sounds like a rush, wait until you hear the music. It's a perfect storm. A perfect side. The band destroys, the arrangements are concise and the singer is a total trip. I hear people all over the world saying Stonewall is a 'Holy Grail'. I agree. 'Holy Grail' status for an LP requires the most extreme and exciting combination of quality and rarity. That's not all. It has to have mystery. It has to reek of humanity. There can be no other LP that beats it at its game. Top dog. It has to be a mindfuck capable of destroying anybody who hears it, including those who have previously only experienced the usual killer classics. Finding a copy must come as close to impossible as possible and remain that way even after everybody knows about it. As an original pressing, Stonewall fulfills all of the 'Holy Grail' requirements and I am jacked that a legitimate reissue finally happens some 30 odd years after it first blew me away! As far as I know, I was the first person to put an original copy up for sale on the collector scene. People were very secretive back then, so maybe a couple other copies were hidden out there in private collections. In the late '80s, I listed it in one of my 'Sound Effects' rare record catalogs for $60 mint condition after a cursory listen. Hmmm... cool hard rock, I thought, but I was mainly into weirdo records at the time. Like a numbskull, I initially failed to detect what was obviously one of the biggest monsters I ever held in my hands. A week or so later, a second listen utterly floored me. I got it. It got me. The heaviest collectors in the world at the time had a chance to grab it for $60, but no one did. Whew... close call. An unknown monster. The search was on. Find the band. Due to the Tiger Lily Morris Levy tax scam label vibes, I knew even if I found Stonewall, it was unlikely they had any LPs stashed in the attic. I knew that quite possibly (as time has shown), the band didn't even know the LP existed. I failed to find the band, so in desperation, I turned my attention to locating that mythical wall of Tiger Lily label LPs supposedly out somewhere in a rehouse on Long Island. People around here used to whisper in awed tones about that, but I think they were most likely whispering about somebody's hallucination. Long ago, my original copy landed in an underground hurricane-proof bunker on the coast of Texas. I sold it for $2000 when I needed some green. The guy who scored it clearly wanted to keep it very safe and that was huge money for even a 'Holy Grail' hard rock monster at the time. Recently an original copy hit $14,000, and it makes sense! Stuff this good is priceless so now that you can get this reissue into your life for cheap, don't be a numbskull... Do It!' --Paul Major"

SALT LICK Salt Lick LP
"Limited to 300 copies. For fans of: Stooges, MC5, Blue Cheer, Crushed Butler, Brown Acid. 'Salt Lick is the very new L.A. trio with heavy connections to Permanent Records, Mock Records, Jesus Sons and that particularly collector-y Bonehead Crunchers/Crushers/etc.-style blunt-object 70s rock 'n' roll... Enthusiastically working the same grinding vibes of that recently rediscovered wave of old-school weirdos who got lost somewhere between prog rock they couldn't play and punk rock they didn't get, and who's we-just-wanna-rock! 45s ended up creating a whole micro-genre of longhair off-the-grid proto-proto-punk. (Salt Lick also claims as an influence 'the one good song on a bunch of major label LPs from the early 70s,' which is also very accurate -- and Permanent/RidingEasy's own Brown Acid comps also make a nice sampler of this sound.)' --LA Record"

BLACK FLOWER Future Flora CD
With a hybrid jazz based on African grooves, Ethio-oriental melodies and psychedelic dub this Belgian five-piece creates an atmosphere where ancient and modern sounds fuse into a powerful, hypnotic, and groovy sensation. Receiving critical acclaim for their second album Artifacts (SDBANU 002CD/LP, 2017), the Belgian quintet are pleased to announce the release of their much-anticipated third album entitled Future Flora. Piloted by saxophonist/flutist/composer Nathan Daems (Ragini Trio, Dijf Sanders, Echoes of Zoo), the input of notorious musicians, drummer Simon Segers (MDC III, De Beren Gieren, Stadt), cornet player Jon Birdsong (dEUS, Beck, Calexico), keyboardist Wouter Haest (Voodoo Boogie), and bassist Filip Vandebril (Lady Linn, The Valerie Solanas) leads to the specific universe that only Black Flower is able to create. Where debut album Abyssinia Afterlife (2014) and Artifacts bathed in an atmosphere of psychedelics, mythical figures, ancient sounds, and modern cultures, Future Flora refers to the power of plants and their importance for the future. Future Flora is a metaphor for the importance of feeding and watering powerful and revolutionary ideas and initiatives that can save our world. Black Flower's musical cross-pollination of sounds and rhythms remain on Future Flora, but there is still room for a more Western touch with Romanian and Maloya (Réunion) influences. Daems developed his own arrangements where Western, Oriental, and Ethiopian scales and chords are fused together to create a real mix of traditional instrumentation and modern electrical vibrations. The strong underlying groove is omnipresent, but the room for psychedelics, folklore, and experimentation grows. Songs like "Hora de Aksum" combine modern western rhythms with doses of Balkan eccentricities while "Future Flora" takes you on a psych-delicious, 21th century, Ethio-dub-jazz trip with echoes of Mulatu Astatke and Fela Kuti.

Once again Thomas and Tassilo are back and this time they come with three fierce cuts of proper, intense techno. SPECTRES Composing Listening Book
2nd printing. Published with the support of INA GRM. Composing Listening features texts by: Félicia Atkinson, François Bayle, François J. Bonnet, Drew Daniel, Brunhild Ferrari, Beatriz Ferreyra, Stephen O'Malley, Jim O'Rourke, Eliane Radigue, Régis Renouard Larivière, Espen Sommer Eide, Daniel Teruggi, Chris Watson. This book has been conceived as both a prism and a manual. Following the "traditional" arc of electroacoustic composition (listen-record-compose-deploy-feel), each of the contributions collected together here focuses in on a personal aspect, a fragment of that thrilling territory that is sonic and musical experimentation. Although the term "experimental music" may now have be understood as referring to a genre, or even a particular style, we ought to hold on to the original use of this term, which was based more on an approach than on any particular aesthetic line to be followed. The experimental is first and foremost a spirit, the spirit of the exploration of unknown territories, a spirit of invention which sees musical composition more as a voyage into uncertain territories than as a self-assured approach working safe within the bosom of fully mapped out and recognized lands. 228 pp; thread-sewn softcover; one color offset; Size: 135x200cm; Language(s): French, English.

PETERS, MARK New Routes Out Of Innerland CD
Former Engineers songwriter Mark Peters pays a final visit to his debut solo album Innerland (SCR 094CD/LP, 2018) with the release of New Routes Out Of Innerland, a collection of reworkings. Innerland was one of 2018's most surprising sleeper successes. An intentionally low-key album of windswept instrumentals inspired by Mark's move back to his native northwest, it gave musical nods to Eno, Talk Talk, Vini Reilly, and Richard Thompson, and first appeared as a limited-edition cassette before being expanded to vinyl and CD editions in April of 2018. Something about its beautiful simplicity struck a chord and slowly but surely. This new version, however, is completely different. It finds Mark looking outwards, away from the bleak, post-industrial landscapes of Wigan, and inviting eight different artists from around the world to interpret and translate the instrumentals of Innerland into their own musical and geographical languages. German sound artist Andi Otto takes "Twenty Bridges" and turns it into a weird world music groove, the cello recalling Arthur Russell, the rhythm Holger Czukay circa Movies (1979); Polish composer Olga Wojciechowska sprinkles stardust all over "Mann Island", morphing it into a slice of febrile, filmic techno; former Disappears and now FACS frontman Brian Case wrangles "Windy Arbour" into a dark, dystopian drone; as previously heard last year on a limited edition lathe-cut 7" single, Ulrich Schnauss subtly re-frames "May Mill" as elegiac electronica, the kind of oddity that could have graced a Tears For Fears B-side circa Songs From The Big Chair (1985); Moon Gangs, aka Will Young from BEAK>, climbs "Gabriel's Ladder" and finds some delicate drone'n'bass; American producer and DJ Odd Nosdam takes his experience of working with Boards Of Canada and turns "Shaley Brow" into a sinister tape collage, entirely in keeping with the murky history of the locale; E Ruscha V, the erstwhile Medicine guitarist also known as Secret Circuit, converts "Cabin Hill" into Balearic Blue Nile; finally, Jefre Cantu-Ledesma lights up "Ashurst's Beacon" as an inferno of deliciously distorted shoegaze. All eight are so disparate and yet they hang together perfectly, resulting in an exciting musical journey to somewhere completely new.

HAMMOND AND DUNCAN FORBES, LOL Days Without End CD
Lol Hammond and Duncan Forbes's roots lie firmly in the boundary-pushing dance music of the 1990s as founding members of the innovative and legendary acts Drum Club and Spooky respectively and went on to become firm friends, after sharing the bill at many of the same clubs and festivals together over the following halcyon years. Fast forward to the early noughties and during a weekend break at Duncan's house the two found themselves finally working together creatively in the studio and a fruitful new relationship was born. This resulted in the pair developing themselves as successful composers and music supervisors, scoring several films, including The Hatton Garden Job (2017), Accident Man (2018), 90 Minutes (2012), and the Tribeca award-winning Obey (2018). From these studio sessions the duo also embarked on recording their first full-length studio album together, resulting in Days Without End on their own newly created Sparkle Jar Records. Days Without End could be described as a soundtrack to a film that has not yet been made. Both Lol and Duncan have a deep love and fascination for film and through this album urge the listener to picture their own movie scenes as they listen. The album takes in sounds across ambient, neo classical, and blissful chilled-out beats guiding the listener on a journey into their own imaginary film soundtrack. In these recordings, Riley plays piano or keyboards and sings with Cuni. Together, they improvise in Hindi, English, and Italian, drawing from their Indian music background as well as from western traditions. ADRIANI, ALESSANDRO Morphic Dreams 2LP
Double-LP version comes in a gatefold sleeve. Hot on the heels of his preliminary EP on Stroboscopic Artefacts and two years after the landing of his 2016-released inaugural LP, Montagne Trasparenti, Mannequin helmsman Alessandro Adriani returns with his highly anticipated full-length debut for Stroboscopic Artefacts, Morphic Dreams. Throughout eleven cuts painstakingly executed but lacking not an iota of the fresh, spontaneous oomph that made his sound stand out of the crowd of techno producers to have emerged over the past decade, Adriani lays the foundations to a suspended sound imaginarium, governed by its own rules and principles of gravity. Revolving around the notions of sublimation and quest for inner balance, Morphic Dreams is comprised of four distinct sequences, conceived and designed as reflections of four mental states, each of them linked to the four alchemical elements -- i.e. Water, Earth, Air and FireFluid and enveloping, the first part takes the listener in some zero-G uterine vortex, pitching, and rolling from the slo-burning exotic sensuality and tribal spell of "The Tropical Year" to the trunk-bending, arpeggiated fast-track pulse of "Storm Trees", through the feverish electro swing of "Raindance". Entering a further abrasive, minerally rich phase, Adriani unleashes his dark side with optimum conviction. Deeply anchored in earthly materiality, this new evolution stage starts off to the frantic Italo bass of "Dissolving Images", rushing headlong into a kaleidoscopic maelstrom of fractured reflections and nasty giallo-like ambience. The delirious body stretch sequence then rather abruptly swerves onto a calmer flux with "Dust/Mist", a much enticingly hip-swaying collaboration with Simon Crab, ex-member of the seminal '80s UK industrial-experimental band Bourbonese Qualk, before "Casting The Runes" engulfs you into a tormented world of swollen eeriness and disquieting esoterism. Back to a widescreen showcase of drone-y distortions, nasty acid swashes and other quirky drum programming, "Hors De Combat" opens a new chapter, shortly followed by the playful bass intricacies and modular jeu-de-piste of "Invisible Seekers", featuring Avian affiliate and longtime friend Shawn O'Sullivan. A further mind-expanding piece, "Crow" deploys its blackened wings wide and high as a chaos of martial percussions and liquefying synths slivers crash past the red-hot skyline. A fluttering melodic interlude, "Things About To Disappear" blazes a clean trail for "Make Words Split And Crack" to flourish, slowly but surely blooming into a nonstop grandiose twelve-minute-shy finale geared up with the stirring cacophonic force of a Ligetian symphony and something of an epic-scale Kubrickian soundtrack.

STUDIO MULE BGM CD
Mule Musiq's sub-label Studio Mule has formed a group of shifting members and are now releasing a debut album with eight tracks of reworked, obscure Japanese gems. BGM contains the three singles the group released so far, featuring Miyako Koda of the experimental pop band Dip In The Pool -- whose On Retinae was reissued by Music From Memory to great acclaim (MFM 010EP, 2017) -- on vocals and Mule Musiq staple Kuniyuki on production with direction by label head Toshiya Kawasaki. One of them, "Carnaval", is a cover of the Japanese dance classic by Taeko Ohnuki, produced by Yellow Magic Orchestra. "Shinzo No Tobira" is a remake of the track by Mariah, a band led by sax player Yasuaki Shimizu, from their album Utakata No Hibi (2015) -- which was one of the reissues that sparked the global interest in obscure Japanese music in the last few years. Studio Mule's version features Japanese lyrics rewritten by Miyako Koda. "Face To Face" is a cover of the ambient pop gem from the ultra-rare album by Yumi Murata of Mariah. Also included is a rework of "Kagami No Naka No Jugatsu", a song by Tamao Koike produced by YMO, turned into a dubby Balearic pop track -- dubbier than the version included on the Yen label compilation -- sang by Nanako Sato, one of the artists enjoying some newfound success following a string of reissues stemming from the "city pop" revival craze. The oriental ambient pop "Yugao" by singer songwriter Mioko Yamaguchi is covered by vocalist Saho Terao, who some describe as this generation's Taeko Ohnuki. "The April Fools" is a rework of Yukihiro Takahashi's track, which itself was also a cover of the original song by Burt Bacharach. This new version boasts a more experimental arrangement with Nanako Sato handling the vocals. YMO's "Ballet", originally with vocals by Yukihiro Takahashi, was reconstructed into a dancefloor-ready instrumental by Kuniyuki. Many say Yoshiyuki Ohsawa's "Soshite Bokuwa Toho Ni Kureru" is one of the greatest songs of the '80s. The 12" dance version is reshaped here into a melancholic Balearic house track. The album cover is by the increasingly popular hotshot photographer Kota Shouji.

TWINK AND THE TECHNICOLOUR DREAM Sympathy for the Beast: Songs from the Poems of Aleister Crowley CD
Sympathy for the Beast, the new album by Twink and the Technicolour Dream, is based on the wonderfully imaginative poetical works of Aleister Crowley, whose natural and intrinsic musical quality Twink and the Technicolour Dream have tried to intensify with their psychedelic musical drive, using sections of the original poems as lyrics for their songs or narrations for their musical backgrounds. Jon Povey has given a significant contribution to this album as vocalist, composer and keyboard player. In addition, William Breeze, head of the Ordo Templi Orientis, the lodge presided by Crowley through most of his life, has provided the recently discovered manuscript scores of two unpublished songs by Crowley that Twink and the Technicolour Dream are presenting for the firsttime in their original form (piano and soprano) and a rock version. Includes two unpublished tracks, "Your Grave Grey Eyes" and "Cinnamon Curls" written by Aleister Crowley and Bernard F. Page, presented in their original score and in a rock arrangement. First ever released on CD. Pressed with the full involvement of John "Twink" Alder and the Techicolour Dream. Recorded and Mastered at Pioneer Studio (Colchester) and Gulliver Master Studio (Rome) between May 2016 and July 2018. Produced by Marco Conti and Fabio Porretti. Digipack; includes 12-page booklet.

MCPHEE, JOE Nation Time LP
Repressed. "'It's been nearly five decades since Joe McPhee assembled a group of musicians to perform the weekend concerts that would become Nation Time, his debut LP. It was December 1970, thirty-one-year-old McPhee was inspired by Amiri Baraka's poem 'It's Nation Time,' and the students at Vassar College didn't know what hit them. 'What time is it?' shouted the bandleader. 'C'mon, you can do better than that. What time is it?!' The music on Nation Time came out of the fertile, but little-known creative jazz scene in Poughkeepsie, New York, McPhee's home base. Two bands were deployed, one with a funky free foundation featuring guitar and organ, the other consisting of a more standard jazz formation with two drummers and the brilliant Mike Kull at the piano. Across the concert and the next afternoon's audience-less recording session, the band was ignited by McPhee's passion and his gorgeous post-Coltrane / post-Pharoah tenor. On 'Shakey Jake,' they hit a James Brown groove filtered through Archie Shepp, while the sidelong title track is as searching and poignant today as it was during its heyday. Originally released in 1971 on CjR, an imprint started expressly to document McPhee's music, Nation Time has a sense of urgency and inspiration. Additional material from those December days would later appear on Black Magic Man, Hat Hut's first release. In fact, the first four records on this seminal Swiss label all featured McPhee. Nation Time was largely unknown a quarter century or so later, when it was first issued on CD through Atavistic's Unheard Music Series. On Corbett vs. Dempsey, we reissued the album along with all known tapes leading up to and around it as a deluxe box set, but the standalone LP has long remained incredibly rare. Now is the time for a new generation of freaks to lose their shit when settling into the cushy beat of 'Shakey Jake' and answer McPhee's call with the only appropriate response: It's NATION TIME.' --John Corbett."

VA Cosmic Discotheque: 12 Junkshop Disco Funk Gems from the 70s LP
'70s disco music wasn't just Abba or the Studio 54. Just like punk or glam rock were doing at the same time, the "disco" phenomenon generated a plethora of obscure and bizarre studio projects which remained in the unknown, despite being often more inspired and creative than the few ones that reached stardom and sold millions of copies. 45 rpm singles that remained unsold, sitting in junkshops all over the world for decades, hide forgotten gems, revealing genius and avant-garde only guilty of not being at the right place at the right time. Be it Moroder-oriented proto synth-wave, groovy space-disco or acid Afro funk, the first volume of the Cosmic Discotheque series is all about rediscovering those forgotten treasures while setting your dancefloor on fire. Features The Mystic Moods, Life, Alan Bown, Red Parish Group, André Brasseur, Black Buster, Bil Tze, The People Next Door, Diabolic Man, Performance, Dance Machine, and Pharaoh. Edition of 500.

RACONTEURS, THE Consolers Of The Lonely 2LP
"Third Man is ecstatic to induct into the standard catalog Consolers Of The Lonely, the critically-lauded, fan-adored, Grammy Award-winning sophomore LP from the beloved quartet known as the Raconteurs. Before surprise releases were common, the Raconteurs ambushed the world with the sudden, unannounced release of Consolers Of The Lonely on March 25th, 2008, a time when coordinating a worldwide physical and digital surprise release was even less easily accomplished than it is today. Consolers finds the Raconteurs at their mightiest, exploring what it means to be a contemporary rock band in a classic sense, full-on bombastic horn arrangements and gut-wrenching murder ballads sit side-by-side while the swagger and confidence of riffs and licks for days firmly establish this album as one of the pre-eminent releases of the 2000s. CAPTAIN BEEFHEART & HIS MAGIC BAND Trout Mask Replica 2LP
"Trout Mask Replica is a touchstone in the history of recorded music. The mix of dada absurdist blues and previously unexplored experimental avenues has long been praised as one of the greatest albums of all time. As so eloquently put by John Peel, 'If there has been anything in the history of popular music which could be described as a work of art in a way that people who are involved in other areas of art would understand, then Trout Mask Replica is probably that work.' In full partnership with the Zappa Family Trust and to celebrate the relaunch of the seminal Bizarre label imprint, Third Man Records is proud to announce Captain Beefheart and the Magic Band's Trout Mask Replica. Out of print on vinyl for nearly ten years, this remaster was helmed by industry legend Bob Ludwig and cut by the estimable Chris Bellman at Bernie Grundman Mastering. Utilizing crystalline-quality safety masters kept in the Zappa family vault for decades by the trustworthy Joe Travers, the audio here is positively glorious. Every last skronk breathes full life into the room. Every twisted guitar figure uncurls onto paths previously unpaved. Every last bark and howl shines resolute through the vast emptiness of your mind. Previous countless Trout Mask Replica repressings used scans of scans of scans of the cover image, but the original Cal Schenkel cover photo has been tracked down and reproduced here at its clearest -- its resolution from the original release in 1969. If you've only ever seen a jpg online or fuzzy, smeared-looking CD issues from the 90's, be prepared to be wowed by the fully engaging spectrum this iconic image casts. This 2xLP is pressed on heavyweight 180-gram black vinyl for that full-on frenetic feeling. 180g vinyl, gatefold Stoughton tip-on jacket, booklet insert."

HOPKINS, LIGHTNIN' Strums The Blues LP
"Lightnin' Hopkins is a true folk singer. His songs are the heart of the South, the very essence of his people, their joys, their triumphs, their difficulties, their oppression. Lightnin's music, like that of any great artist, has a universal quality. When you hear it, it might be your sadness or your ecstasy that is being told -- the feeling of all people, the qualities of all living, good and bad, lie in the easy cadences and pathos of Lightnin's expression. So long as folk music endures, so long will Lightnin' Hopkins be played. Strums The Blues is a compilation that was originally released in 1958 on the Score label. It is a collection of his legendary early Aladdin 78" sides. These songs have been carefully remastered for this release and cut by Warren Defever and Bill Skibbe. The cover art has been reimagined by modern-day folk artist Tim Kerr."

TEDDY AND THE ROUGH RIDERS I Found Somethin'/Neon Cowboy 7"
"Luckily for us, Teddy and the Rough Riders have been burning up the Nashville underground over the past few years. With roots deep in psychedelia, the group stripped back all the trimmings to a Velvets rhythm section and steeped it in a Music Row dive bar for their own brand of country rock that is poppy, precise, well-educated and completely self-aware. What, then, would be the point of an exaggerated drawl or a convenient new interest in roping cattle? The Teddys' sound is country that, somewhat paradoxically, lives and breathes in the city. So, it is fitting that their A-side single 'I Found Somethin'' throws down a strong psych card, with bassist Ryan Jennings' vocals leading us through a vibrant and playfully painted scene filled with a can of worms, desk drugs and big wet dogs. The second track 'Neon Cowboy', guided this time by guitarist Jack Quiggins, dives down a rabbit hole of self-reflection and social questioning, with Luke Schneider's atmospheric pedal steel and Nick Swafford's always-tasteful drums giving it real backbone. For fans of The Byrds, Link Wray and CCR. This one's not to be missed. For fans of The Byrds, Link Wray and CCR. This one's not to be missed."

Their live show is droll and nervy and danceable, and an essential sight to see. The A-side of their debut single 'Every Night They Hack Off A Limb' starts off like the opening overture theme to a forgotten spy film, then surges into the percussion and sax-led, wired up titular refrain. The B-side 'Human Trafficking' is a keyboard-driven soul-punk number made especially delightful with bizarro gremlin backing vocals and contagious singalong post-chorus."

STOOLS, THE When I Left 7"
"Jesus Christ! The Stools! This is the kind of mangled barking terrifyingly manic garage that the Midwest pumps out better and more consistently than anybody and the Stools seem to be challenging every one of us to a frenetic fistfight for top spot. With 4 songs averaging 2 minutes, the When I Left EP feels like a whirlwind experience from its opening distortion to final feedback. The title track 'When I Left' is a garage punk banger a la Gun Club meets the Oblivians that tremors and nearly buckles under its own weight before it ends. American Convertible Stools chugs almost entirely on the same infectious blues riff, which could be repetitive with another group at the helm, but here is just incredibly fun and vital. The B-side? You've got the desperate and evil blown-out blues of 'Black Fly Stew' butted up with the gone-before-it-was-here urgency wrapped up in a Bo Shitley beat of 'Don't Need Nothing'. Give this a spin and you won't need to care about what anyone has to say about anything anymore."

"Guitar Wolf! They are the keepers of all blasted, hard, spazzed out songs, building a whole life on the bedrock of hyperactive RNR exhilaration. This Japanese power-group has been stupefying audiences at home and on the road since the late '80s and finally are back to unveil their capital-L loud jams. Third Man is fortunate to be releasing their lucky 13th full-length album Love&Jett and to have a hand in supporting Guitar Wolf's noisy and canonical rise to their rightful place in underground music's highest hall of fame. Love&Jett is full of Guitar Wolf's sweet, sweet love songs, all recorded in Japan. While each song's words (apart from a handful of song titles, 1-2-3-4s plus a clever cover of Spencer Davis Group's 'Gimme Some Lovin'') punch out in their native Japanese, the adoring English-speaking public will be granted an insert enclosed in each LP and CD with all lyrics translated to English. The energy explodes on the scene with the title track's opening 1-2 bass-snare piston-fire and truly does not let up at any point on the full album. Seiji, Toru, and Gotz shine especially bright on Sex Jaguar, barely clocking in just over 2 minutes with chorus catchphrases and feline roars."

And being a lover of all things vinyl, he's decided that the label's inaugural release has to be for Record Store Day. Rock's production forte is the melding of Jazz with early 90s East Coast boom bap, as demonstrated though his work with partner in rhyme CL Smooth. VA Cumbia Beat Volume 3: 21 Peruvian Tropical Gems CD
"Fifty years after the release of one of the founding records of the genre known as Peruvian cumbia (by guitar players Enrique Delgado Montes and Berardo Hernández 'Manzanita'), Vampisoul presents this third volume in the series Cumbia Beat, which brings together 45 rpm rarities from acclaimed groups, short-lived bands and outstanding huaycumbias. Like the previous volumes in this series, listening to this record takes you on a journey across the geography of Peru, as the majority of the groups on this collection were from different regions of the country, or had close links to them, although all of the artists recorded in Lima. Most of the bands emerged during the period 1968-1980, a time of deep political and social change implemented by the nationalist military dictatorship. Los Demonios Del Mantaro, Los Demonios De Corocochay, and Los 5 Palomillas are the exceptions to this, as they recorded between 1965 and 1967 and produced a hybrid of cumbia and huayno called huaycumbia, a genre which achieved high sales figures during those years. Despite the characteristics of huaycumbia, the early composers of Peruvian cumbia didn't consider it a direct source of inspiration. They admit to being more influenced by Colombian cumbia, Cuban guaracha, beat, and psychedelic music from the UK and US that they had played since the end of the '60s, in their 'own style', as a part of a musical appropriation process that quickly led them to forge a singular sound. Peruvian cumbia developed, spurred by the music school erudition of the guitarist Enrique Delgado Montes on the one hand and, on the other, by the self-taught creativity of Berardo Hernández 'Manzanita'. Largely ignored by the elites, it steadily won over audiences and created its own market, establishing its own broadcast channels and distribution channels. As Enrique Delgado stated in 1973: 'We've defined a typically Peruvian cumbia which, strange as it might appear, people also like in Colombia and several other countries.' Finally, setting up their own labels, competing hard against one another and enriching their music with sounds they brought from their specific regions, these bands that gradually sprung up all over the country managed to consolidate a tradition that is still alive today." --Hugo Lévano GAlso features Silvestre Montez Y Sus Guantanameros, Los Cóndores Del Cusco, Los Gitanos, Los Orientales De Paramonga, Los Casmeños, Los Beta 5, Los Girasoles, Paco Zambrano Y Sus Ratones, Los Ecos, Los Tantos, Los Scorpios, Los Blue Kings De Ñaña, Grupo Siglo XX, Los Sander's De Ñaña, Los Quantos, Los Diablos Rojos, Marco Merry Y Sus Golfos, and Sonido Verde De Moyobamba.

NEGRO, JOEY Backstreet Brit Funk Vol.1 2LP
Subtitled: A Collection of the UK's Finest Underground Soul Jazz-Funk and Disco. Backstreet Brit Funk, compiled by Dave Lee aka Joey Negro is a double disc album featuring highly-collectable tracks from the late '70s through to the mid-'80s with sleeve notes from soul weekender veteran Mark Webster. This compilation will appeal as much to fans of labels like Soul Jazz as the usual Z Records collectors. Brit Funk tells the story of the underground scene in the UK when punk and disco were giving way to a new blend of jazz, soul and funk, heavily influenced by the American big-hitters of the day but re-worked by the UK pioneers for the British dancefloors. This is a unique selection of high quality music, which will have a shelf-life lasting well beyond the currents trends and fads. All tracks have been Cedared and re-mastered to a very high standard and now sound better than ever before. Joey Negro has also re-edited many of the tracks exclusively for this album, updating them with a fresh new approach. A collection of rare and very sought-after underground British disco, funk and soul tracks avoiding the obvious hits. Many of these tracks never went beyond a very small local release but have since become very collectable. Buying this lot would set you back somewhere in the four figures. When it comes to being at the cutting edge of clubbing culture, the Brits are always right there at the front of the line. Just as revolutionary as the clubber's style was the music they were into -- often provided by American musicians easily twice their British audience's age and what's more, very much from the American jazz establishment. Names such as Roy Ayers, Lonnie Liston Smith, Donald Byrd and George Duke had already been around as dedicated jazzers, while groups such as Earth, Wind & Fire and The Crusaders were also borne out of that tradition. Created by British musicians for the UK audience, Brit funk was raw and up-tempo and what it lacked in the smooth finesse of the polished American jazz funk, it made up for with unbridled enthusiasm and energy. Joey Negro has some of the genuinely "unsung" heroic records of the style; hard-to-find but absolutely right THERE in terms of those soul, jazz, funk and disco influences -- with that Brit funk twist. Features China Burton, Joey Negro, Ed Bentley, Style X, Mirage, Savanna, Ritual, MBT, Ranson, McKenzie & Friends, 52nd Street, The Cool Notes, and Nigel Martinez.
