BRIAN JONESTOWN MASSACRE, THE Their Satanic Majesties Second Request 2LP
2020 repress; black vinyl. Gatefold 180 gram double vinyl version. Truth in advertising: the Brian Jonestown Massacre's sophomore album does, as promised, spring forth from the Rolling Stones' long-underrated 1967 masterpiece Their Satanic Majesties Request, copping not only Mick and Keith's leering bad-boy attitude but also their rock-and-roll-circus spirit. Opening with the brilliant "All Around You (Intro)," a tongue-in-cheek guide to the mind-altering journey ahead, the record is a kaleidoscopic, drug-fueled freakout -- like the Stones' namesake album, Second Request is painted by Eastern drones and psychedelic tangents, each track bubbling with dozens of sound effects including sitars, mellotrons, farfisas, didgeridoos, tablas, congas, and glockenspiels. Travelling through the past, darkly, the Massacre arrives on the other side unscathed; their music is too rich to be merely retro, and too knowing to be merely slavish -- the Stones themselves haven't made a record this strong or entertaining in years.

SW. TRUElipS 2LP
Over the past decade, SUED co-founder SW. has arranged the building blocks of dreamy rave and techno music -- billowing pads, undulating sub-bass, and adroit, nuanced drum programming -- into and novel dance floor structures. TRUElipS, SW.'s first full album since 2016 and his first for Avenue 66, is a beguiling, fully-realized statement. The 12-track LP is rooted in the storied '90s era when the spirit of orbital raves and free parties was channeled into massive leaps forward in the studio. A combination of house and drum n' bass looms large, as does the much-referenced intelligent techno era, but if you've listened to an SW. record, you already know TRUElipS is the work of a singular auteur. Breakbeats, rave stabs and major chords permeate the album, motoring along on a chassis of sine-wave bass lines and SW.'s widescreen percussive vision. Forays into downtempo and sweeping ambience keep the listener's head in the clouds, while the superb melodic techno constructions that comprise the album's core are at once contemplative and liable to bring on a giddy head rush. TRUElipS brims with the optimistic, escapist spirit that fueled dance music's original triumph, a throwback to bright, imagined futures.

LURKA Partials/Mach 12"
2015 release. Lurka continues his journey into sonic bat country, following his acclaimed Holding EP (ACRE 049EP, 2014) and his highly regarded remix of Clap! Clap!'s "Ashiko" (2014). "Partials" kicks off with Lurka's typical intrigue; pads swell as distant specters of percussion build into a hugely saturated kick alongside an architecture of syncopated hats and bit-crunching snares lock the angles and a shower of haunting bells falls. Dancehall for the witching hour. "Mach" delivers an equally holodeck soundscape. Drums swing in awkward alliance with dry wooden blocks and woozy binary language. Both tracks united in their skewed viewpoint and distinctive awkward funk.

CLAP! CLAP! Simple EP 12"
2015 release. Clap! Clap! follows his 2014 full-length debut, Tayi Bebba, with an EP of sizzling world beats as indebted to the Inuit peoples of Alaska as to the staccato footwork of Chicago, featuring traditional Italian folk rhythms and melodies mixed with a global harvest of found sounds smashed through an electronic beat machine mind-state. With all these disparate influences it would be easy to lose form and style, but this fully-fledged jazz practitioner adds his own unique gait to each track. The Simple EP is a return to the basics -- brave, exciting music for your carnival.

MORRICONE, ENNIO Female: Ennio Morricone Seleceted by Alessandro Casella LP
2014 release; warehouse find of last copies. Female: A Musical Journey into the World of Women. This project was born of a very simple idea; to create a sonic journey into the world of women. By selecting songs from film music by the great Ennio Morricone Black Cat Records seek to give an unusual soundtrack, not inspired by a film but instead by the muse of all muses: The Women. Whose sounds could better describe this world of music than Ennio Morricone's? Who better than the maestro can really describe all the highlights of a day, a season, or a woman's life? From the most dramatic moments to the happiest, the most sensual, seductive, sensitive and tough ones at the same time. Morricone's emotional strength manages to convey strong vibrations with very few notes, just like the surreptitious glance from a woman in love that flashes between two people. When you listen to the song "Poetry Of A Woman" you can feel this vibe. The sensuality of the music of "Scena d'Amore" from the movie Crescete e Moltiplicatevi is striking. It evokes a mood quite independent of the scene in the movie; indeed, it gives your imagination the freedom to dream of sexy and sophisticated pictures. Edda Dell'Orso's voice is the second great personality of this record. On each track her presence (which is in almost all of them) leads you into this mood, almost whispering: in the sea, in bed, in the disco, at a cocktail party or on the verge of a nervous breakdown. Thus, through these notes, you will be taken by the hand into this journey with eros, passion, love, tragedy, and fantasy.

HENNIX, CATHERINE CHRISTER Unbegrenzt LP
Unbegrenzt is the third in an ongoing series of archival records of the unheard music of Swedish composer Catherine Christer Hennix, co-released by Blank Forms Editions and Empty Editions. It follows Selected Early Keyboard Works (2018) and Selections from 100 Models of Hegikan Roku, named the #1 archival release of 2019 by The Wire (BF 007LP, 2019), in addition to a two-volume collection of Hennix's writing titled Poësy Matters and Other Matters. Recorded in February of 1974 and featuring Catherine Christer Hennix (recitation, percussion, electronics) and Hans Isgren (bowed gong), Hennix's realization of Karlheinz Stockhausen's "Unbegrenzt" (German for "unlimited") from Aus den Sieben Tagen is an elaboration both rigorous and radically different from the canonical 1969 recording issued by Shandar. The collection of 15 text pieces written in Paris during May of 1968, Aus den Sieben Tagen, denies its performers notated direction and instead provides poetic cues that hinge upon Stockhausen's conception of "intuitive music," a Eurocentric perspective on improvisation antithetical to the vernacular forms Hennix had engaged with as a young drummer performing in Stockholm jazz clubs with musicians like Bill Barron, Cam Brown, Hans Isgren, Lalle Svenson, Allan Vajda, Bo Wärmell, and many others. While both Hennix and Isgren saw the formal prospect of Aus den Sieben Tagen as a productive development of and beyond La Monte Young's event scores, she here steadfastly counters his rationalization of intuition with the Principle of Sufficient Reason. (Cf. Brouwer's Lattice.) Eschewing the busy, conservatory-addled lapses into idiomatic citation of Stockhausen's 1969 recording, Hennix's alternative realization of the "Unbegrenzt" score's instructions to "play a sound with the certainty that you have an infinite amount of time and space" is based on her concept of "Infinitary Compositions", the trademark of her ensemble The Deontic Miracle which, at one time, considered adding Stockhausen, La Monte Young, and Terry Jennings scores to its repertoire. Taking a mature, minimal iteration of Stockhausen's compositional method of "moment-forming" to heart, her version's dark, controlled feedback and amplified bowed gong subtly shift through an immanent sequence of formative moments, step by step. Its bubbling computer noise, percussion, and repeated ominous transient sounds of temple blocks over the bowed gong terminate with the integrated recitation of exotic text fragments from Hevajra Tantra which faithfully take Stockhausen's score into deeper vistas of the unconscious and a more devastating opening to the unlimited time and space of a dreaming mind. Audio restoration and mastering by Stephan Mathieu, with an essay by Bill Dietz.

RAS ALLAH Showcase LP
LP version. "Keith Blake was born in St. Elizabeth, and raised in Greenwich Town, Kingston, Jamaica, Ras Allah's career began in the vocal group The Leaders, who recorded three tracks for producer Joe Gibbs in the late 1960s. When The Leaders broke up, he continued to work with Gibbs, who issued his debut solo release, Woo Oh Oh. In the mid-1970s he released a single 'Born a Fighter' for producer Teddy Powell, before working with Bertram Brown's Freedom Sounds, with a series of recordings, under the name Prince Alla, that are now regarded as roots reggae classics, such as 'Sun Is Shining', 'Bucket Bottom', 'Lot's Wife', and 'Stone'. He also recorded for producer Tapper Zukie, including the album Heaven Is My Roof. Continuing interest in his work saw the release of two albums of material from the 1970s on Blood & Fire records, Only Love Can Conquer and I Can Hear The Children Singing, which brought his work to a new audience. Allah continued to release records occasionally through the 1980s and 1990s, including an album with Jah Shaka, as well as this album. He has continued to be in demand and since 2010 has been touring the world."

SARMACJA Jazda Polska LP
Sarmacja's sophomore album Jazda Polska, released by London-based label Byrd Out, follows up on their 2018 debut on Astigmatic Records, Tutejsi. Above all there is dub on it -- however unorthodox -- originally captured. Mystical flow, reckless charges, and joyful songs -- all without restraint and with uhlan fantasy. The spirit of a holy madman in the Sarmatian version hovers over the record -- the one who after a few glasses of vodka, covered with gasoline fragrance from the barbecue -- once being moved, telling about the misery of the nation, and a moment after falling into ecstasy of stories about bravery in battles. Then in anger -- when reminding himself how much the neighbor's diesel burns. Bottom line is simple: having fun, especially until dawn. And even if the stories of the holy madman are slightly slacked, even if at times the vibe gets gloomy, and the story isn't fully true -- who cares? Jazda Polska got even more colors thanks to the excellent features from Kacha Kowalczyk, known from Coals and Muka. She appeared in two songs on the album: "Doktor S?owo" and "Karaoke Dub". The Orb made a remix of "Olimpijczyk" to end the LP, commenting on Byrd Out's suggestion of doing a remix "Sounds weird enough," and The Orb's "Oak Island Remix" has a quintessentially Orb feel. The Oak Island reference is a nod to the Knights Templars link to the Money Pit on Oak Island, Nova Scotia. Sarmacja is Pawe? Bartnik, Micha? Ko?owacik, and (now also) Aleksandra Szali?ska (aka FLicker Fox), musicians operating at the forefront of the Polish experimental scene. Artwork by G.S-L Studio Tracks.

MERCURY REV Hello Blackbird LP
"Debut on vinyl LP for Mercury Rev's 2006 soundtrack album, Hello Blackbird. At the time, V2 planned to release this on vinyl but the project never got beyond test pressings. Strictly limited edition of 1,000 copies on marbled blue vinyl, with a printed inner sleeve. Musically, Hello Blackbird allowed Mercury Rev to further expand the sonic soundscapes they were exploring with The Secret Migration, with classical and ambient styles ('The Last Of The White Birds' reinterpreted Chopin's Piano Sonata No. 2 in Bb minor, Opus 35 (Marche Funebre)). The album was recorded at Six Hour Studios in Kingston, New York, in mid-2004 and the music was intended as the soundtrack for the 2005 feature film Bye Bye Blackbird, by French director and photographer Robinson Savary. Bye Bye Blackbird was a tragic, compelling love story set in a turn-of-the-century travelling circus, with a stellar cast, including Derek Jacobi and James Thierre."

EXTRAWELT Extra Welt Hits 4x12"
To coincide with their 15-year anniversary, Extrawelt are quietly proud to release Extra Welt Hits. A collector's box, which covers every album and period from their dominant yet enigmatic history as one of Germany's most highly regarded electronic acts. Etched into the four-piece vinyl box-set is a 15-track playlist which takes you back to the dawn of their beautiful Extra World. Extra Welt Hits is a time capsule drenched in the essence of the act's DNA. Accentuated by newly remastered tracks that serve their ever-evolving, clever and out-of-the-box sound, each recording spills into the next with sonic precision. From the monumental masterpiece of the album's opening track "Ferneh", through to the "One-way ticket to oblivion, please" hits of "Soopertrack" and "Titelheld", the listener is left captivated. And, because it's what they do best, the destruction and artful reconstruction echoed through their shows are also present. These are beamed out in the exclusive live versions of "Zu Fuss", "Dark Side Of My Room", and "Herzstück". Recorded in Tokyo, Paris and at the Fusion Festival, these bent, broken and rebuilt icons prove once again why they are one of the most influential live-acts of the semi- underground. That live-act -- a futuristic symphony of dance music -- is both undefinable and strays well past the norm. Their chance to manipulate their creations in a flow of measured spontaneity, it continues to leave permanent impressions on audiences everywhere. The result is an experience focused on purism with great care in presenting the deepest core of their craft, in essence; exactly what sums up their musical galaxy. It was never the acts plan to release a best-of album, especially at the unusual 15-year mark, rather, it rolled into motion naturally as a way to immortalize the victory of being around so long (in a scene where the shelf life for most artists doesn't last much longer than an album or two, fifteen years is something of a triumph). With that, Extrawelt invite those that were there from the start to join them in getting a kick out of being "officially mature". And for those that were not, to have the chance to hear their story up until now, like it's never been told before. And yes, while the listener may have outlived many of the clubs which first introduced them, it is unlikely that anyone has outgrown this brave, intangible and absorbing music.

DITMAS, BRUCE Visioni Sconvolgenti 10"
Limited restock. With roots in the early developments of modular synthesis and free jazz and revered amongst the most discerning collectors of international jazz, electronic music, and American avant-garde, the experimental drummer known as Bruce Ditmas occupies a firm branch on contemporary experimental music's family tree. As the one time romantic partner (and artistic collaborator) of sound poet Joan La Barbara (later to be Miss Morton Subotnik) and the stand-out session drummer for both Robert Mason's mutant synth Stardrive project and Gil Evan's legendary Jimi Hendrix tribute band, Ditmas is best savored as the first recorded solo artist to utilize Robert Moog's lesser-known Moog Drum controller -- an instrument which over the course of two 1977 independent LPs (Aeray Dust and Yellow) would become synonymous with his blooming reputation. Raised in Miami, nurtured in New York City, and willingly exploited internationally, Bruce's public life as a child prodigy-cum-world jazz crusader (drawing similarities with the likes of France's Jacques Thollot) has seen him spread his select discography over many imprints, including Joan La Barbara's own Wizard Label, Enja, and ECM -- socializing with sound designers like Suzanne Ciani and collaborating on projects penned by Annette Peacock, Paul Bley, and his long running collaborator Enrico Rava. Spending the last thirty years travelling between America and Italy as a full-time jazz musician whilst working with inter-communal music initiatives, film directors, and theater groups, Bruce has retained the same maverick passion and macabre creative influences channeling brutalism, futurism, science fiction, and psychological horror through his percussive mantra and avant-garde approach to instrument manipulation and recontextualization. The selected titles on Visioni Sconvolgenti are extracted from various recordings made over the last three decades, comprising field recording techniques and percussive manipulation resulting in gritty tonal soundscapes and angular sonic sculptures, while drawing theoretical comparisons with European proto-industrial units like Germany's Faust, Swiss electronic jazz pioneer Bruno Spoerri, Czech sonic illustrator Milan Grygar, and sprawling generation of Parisian musique concrète informed anti-melodic luminaries. Reflecting a lifelong career in active melodic drum exploration and vivid existential sound design, Visioni Sconvolgenti provides an alternative, darker, meditative, glimpse into the work of a proactive composer at his non-conformist best in the uninhibited confides of his own home analog studio. Artwork by Andy Votel. Cut at Dubplates & Mastering.

FRA DET ONDE FEAT. THE LEGENDARY EMIL NIKOLAISEN Fra Det Onde Feat. the Legendary Emil Nikolaisen LP
Three of Norway's most vital musicians got together for a unique session, that places Fra Det Onde (From Evil) on the shoulders of the great American masters of improvisation, as well as the sleek European tradition of electric jazz poetry. There's a deep level of pure skill present -- they have travelled these roads many times before and the mileage behind them is frankly astonishing. Drummer Olaf Olsen, all hippie hair and broad smiles, from renowned prog-ensemble Bigbang. Rickenbacker bass plough Rune Nergaard is a part of Exoterm, with Nels Cline and Jim Black. Trumpeter Erik Kimestad Pedersen, from the southern tip of Norway, has turned Danish and stirred a wave in the Copenhagen jazz scene. Adding to the mystery is the clear presence of elusive noise-guru Emil Nikolaisen of Serena Maneesh behind the mixing console, and on the occasional Farfisa. Like a Teo Macero in space, Nikolaisen's singular mixing style adds a crucial signature to the album, pushing the limits of sonic exploration even further. Nikolaisen is a full force of nature at work, making the ghosts appear through his tubes and oscillators. You can hear their eerie howls throughout the album, like specters from other times, other places trapped behind and beyond the tapestry of music. Includes liner notes by Ando Woltmann.

THULIN, MARTIN Into The Light LP
Solo project from Exploded View's Martin Thulin. Since 2016, the Swedish born Thulin has been focusing on his band Exploded View, fronted by Anika (Stones Throw, Invada Records), which so far has released three records on Brooklyn based Sacred Bones. He has simultaneously produced three albums for the Californian group Crocodiles, but now it is time for the release of his new solo material, the second solo album, Into The Light. Into The Light is a nostalgic and introspective album, nevertheless it's at the same time all about breaking loose and leaving the past behind you. Moving forward into the light. It's obviously a word play, as to walk into the light could also mean death. The fragility of life, as death basically lurks anywhere around the corner, is a pervading theme on the album. It could be your otherwise healthy cat out of the blue falling ill or a brutal earthquake, like the one that hit Martin's current hometown, Mexico City, in September 2017. The music maybe doesn't sound like the record's majkor influences; The Cure's Faith (1981) and Nico's The End... (1974), which Martin claims were among the few albums he could listen to from start to end during the making. Martin's music is far more electronic though, sometimes with direct nods to Kraftwerk 2 (1972) or Ralf And Florian (1973). It certainly does have a flavor of that European darkness and nostalgia which all four albums have in common. Beer transparent color vinyl; edition of 300. "The result is a collection with echoes of everything, from quirky, upbeat pop tunes with Joe Meek-ish arrangements to the seven-minute instrumental track 'Pictures Of Woods'." --The Wire

VICTOR'S SOUNDNOISEFUNK, FAY We've Had Enough! CD
The second album by this all-star quartet Far Victor's SoundNoiseFunk -- both on ESP-Disk' -- was recorded over two sets mixing planned and freely improvised music. It is a cry of frustration, but also determination and celebration. Frustration with the state of our country, determination to do something about it, and celebration of the power and joy of spontaneous creativity. There are so many things contributing to this album's joyousness in the face of adversity: the funky grooves that Joe Morris and Reggie Nicholson sometimes lock into; the sonic derring-do of Newsome; the breath-of-life singing of Faye Victor that balances radical and traditional, naturalness and craft. Most of all, the way the players' talents mesh into a greater whole. Recorded in concert at Firehouse 12 in New Haven on October 25, 2019. Recorded, mixed, and mastered by Greg DiCrosta. Produced by Steve Holtje. Credits: Fay Victor - voice, texts, compositions; Sam Newsome - soprano saxophone; Joe Morris - electric guitar; Reggie Nicholson - drums. Design & layout by Jochem van Dijk. Liner notes by Fay Victor."Wet Robots is her debut record as a leader for ESP-Disk', and it's a doozy. The supergroup that the improviser/lyricist calls SoundNoiseFunk -- is entirely deserving of its name -- their red-hot chemistry is evident from the get-go. HENRY, PIERRE Orphee Ballet LP
2020 restock. Fantôme Phonographique present a reissue of Pierre Henry's Orphée Ballet, originally released in 1964. Scored for Maurice Béjart's choreography to the Orphée Ballet, based on the Greek god, Orpheus, this is one of Pierre Henry's finest works of musique concrète, the genre in which Henry was an early innovator and to which he devoted his career. After years working for the French national radio (RTF) and honing his studio chops on radio spots and editing/composition, Henry formed his own studio in 1958 and began working on modern dance and ballet and soundtrack work. Incorporating percussion, industrial soundscapes, nature sounds, spoken French narrative, and synthesized tones, Orphée Ballet is a beautiful piece that while less known than what is perhaps his most famous work, also for Béjart's ballet production, 1967's Les Jerks Électroniques De La Messe Pour Le Temps Présent Et Musiques Concrètes Pour Maurice Béjart, is equally compelling and groundbreaking. Following his passing in 2017 at age 89, Henry's work has found renewed interest, and this is a welcome reissue of one of his rarest and finest works. Truly brilliant. Comes in a heavy sleeve with a hand-numbered sticker.

LES CONVERSIONS Cassette LP
"FTR is tickled pink to present the second album in the Drowned Land series, a group of recordings selected by Jason Meagher from recordings made at his Black Dirt Studio. Les Conversions are the trio of Dave Shuford, Pat Murano, and Jason himself, three musicians first recognized for their work with the legendary No Neck Blues Band. Their first two LPs, Les Conversions (KEL 015LP, 2013) and Snowwhite (Holidays Records, 2013) were recorded during a single 2011 session and both brim with long form no rules brain fucking that is damn hard to put your finger on. Suffice to say that of all the countless projects associated with NNCK, Les Conversions are in some ways the closest to tapping the same endlessly fluxible root. The session for Cassette went down in 2017. Pat mixed the album, and Jason released it on his Microdose tape label in an edition of 20 or so. Nice to know it will now get a few more ears stuck to its shimmering curves, because the music on Cassette is full flowing freakery. As Jason says, 'We consider this, not paisley swirly doo-dah, to be psychedelic music.' And it's hard to argue with that while the two sidelong tracks crawl under your skin and begin broadcasting weird signals to your brain. There are riffs and pulses present throughout the music, but there is also a sense of true freedom that is beholden to none of the usual form-anchors. Making this one of the nicest soundtracks for hallucinogenic shuffling I've heard in a dog's age. Just what the doctor ordered!" --Byron Coley, 2020 Co-released with Drowned Lands.

Embryonic psych funk recordings from Parisian teenage psych combo (including members of French No-No mod rockers Unity). Imagine an early Gong/Ame Son/Soft Machine session fueled by a 1000-year old, acid-infused blood transfusion. With origins in the Parisian underground, the free press revolution, new wave cinema, the Letterist movement, French surrealism, sexual liberation and the European progressive rock explosion Jean Rollin's 1972 film Le Frisson De Vampires still stands up as one of the most original European poetic erotic horror films after almost 40 since it's cosmic inauguration. Finders Keepers release the complete freak-rock soundtrack to the most phantasmagoric celluloid moment from "The First French Vampire Director" which has been shrouded in mystery, secrecy and red wine addled memories for four decades. Originally rumored to be played by a disbanded group of teenagers and lost in the edit suite the unabridged soundtrack of improvised freak-funk, commune rock and acidik folk could have easily been recorded by an early line-up of Gong or Ame Son and released on a label like BYG or ESP. The true origins of this rare psychedelic score and its unspoken legacy via private pressed free jazz albums and collectible mod rock 45s adds to the twisted tails that unfolds via our extensive liner notes making this release yet another counter-cultural pop milestone courtesy of Finders Keepers Records. Made on a shoestring in rural Northern France with a cast and crew that draws a blood red line between the avant-garde and the pre-cert video cassette the behind the scenes story of Les Frisson De Vampires engulfs a rampant river of cultural phenomenon such as Japanese Pinky films, X-rated comic books, The Mai 68 riots, and the forward-thinking no-no generation. Complete with classic and highly collectible artwork by French illustrator Phillipe Druliet and music that will appeal to fans of J.P.Massiera, Amon Düül 1, Jean-Claude Vannier, Igor Whakevitch, Fifty Foot Hose, early Pink Floyd, and Acid Mothers Temple. Originally released in 2010 as the inaugural release in Finders Keepers' dedicated Rollinade series, the release is now presented on transparent blood red vinyl.

WHITE HILLS Splintered Metal Sky CD
Splintered Metal Sky, the long-awaited new installment in the ever-vast musical cannon of White Hills. The album takes the listener on a post-punk, psychedelic ride fueled by industrial-strength fuzz and propelled by powerful beats where songs weave in and out of each other to imitate the rhythm of the city the band calls home. Splintered Metal Sky is about oscillation and evolution. It's metamodern music looking at human existence in relation to technology and the hyper-driven architectural reshaping of a city. The music was largely inspired by the drone and roar of machinery pulsing through New York City, which is in a never-ending state of demolition and reconstruction. Dave and Ego took to the streets, gathering field recordings of sounds from the subway, drills, jackhammers, people in parks, traffic, mayhem, and the occasional silence. These recordings were then manipulated and constructed into rhythmic lines that were used as the basis for songs. The music, mixing noise with disciplined beat, embodies the paradoxical nature of the city: the grimy littered dead end alley just steps away from the sleek luxury skyscraper; the half-eaten chicken bone being devoured by a rat on the subway tracks just beneath the glittering facade of the Chrysler building; the endless milling about of the eight million people who call this slab of land home on their way to and from everywhere and nowhere. Informed by industrial innovators Einstürzende Neubauten and SPK, the avant-garde post-punk of Tuxedomoon and the dub-electro of Cabaret Voltaire, the album vibrates with the energy of a sensually feral, raw beast. "CoNSTRUCT" features synth and samples by Jim Coleman and ambient guitar by Jim Jarmusch.

Honey Pie Records present a reissue of Dollar Brand Plays Sphere Jazz, originally released in 1962. This is the first trio album from the great South-African pianist Dollar Brand (later known as Abdullah Ibrahim). One of the first African musicians to speak out from a different Jazz perspective. Recorded in Johannesburg in 1962 and reissued here for the first time on LP, Plays Sphere Jazz is also one of the very first African jazz productions. This is vibrant and emotionally powerful music performed by an extremely inspired trio including Dollar Brand himself on piano and two other historical South-African musicians: Johnny Gertz on bass and Makaya Ntshoko on drums. JONES SEXTET, PHILLY JOE Blues For Dracula LP
Honey Pie Records present a reissue of Philly Joe Jones Sextet's Blues For Dracula, originally released in 1958. Blues For Dracula is the debut album by American jazz drummer Philly Joe Jones which was recorded in 1958 for the Riverside label. A former child tap dancer, Philly Joe Jones was destined to become something of a percussionist. As it was, he became world renowned as the drummer of Miles Davis first great quintet, serving as the rhythm and time keeper of that great outfit between 1955 and 1958. He left for a solo career in 1958. His debut became an instant classic thanks to the title track (written by Johnny Griffin) and the similarly themed cover. The song packs plenty of hard-charging swing and blues-drenched improvisation from cornetist Nat Adderley, trombonist Julian Priester, saxophonist Johnny Griffin, pianist Tommy Flanagan, and bassist Jimmy Garrison. But it's also a cheeky take on the horror-film craze of the 1950s, complete with a Bela Lugosi impersonator who intones with a thick Transylvanian accent, "I'm the Bebop Vampire. I like the song the song to shine!" Thereafter, Philly Joe both led his own groups (he would record a further twelve albums up to 1982) as well as performing as a sideman for a wide variety of musicians including Bill Evans and Hank Mobley.

TOM AND HIS COMPUTER Future Ruins LP
Two years in the making, Future Ruins, Tom And His Computer's debut album, will be released on Trentemøller's In My Room. As a 20-year veteran of the Copenhagen music scene, Thomas Bertelsen has been releasing music under the sobriquet of Tom And His Computer for five years, merging the newest technologies with the old, while squeezing fresh sounds out of equipment that's not only obsolete, sometimes it's barely functioning at all. "I switch back and forth between the digital and the analog worlds. I'll utilize old guitar pedals as well as the newest software," says Thomas Bertelsen, producer behind Tom And His Computer. "It's never about the gear, though, but rather finding that one little sound that can trigger an idea for an entire track." Future Ruins was also co-produced and mixed by Trentemøller. While previous offerings have taken listeners to the outer boundaries of what can be considered "electronic music," including nods to dark wave, dream pop, krautrock, and modern psych rock, Future Ruins presents those influences in a new way and represents a great leap forward for the Copenhagen based producer. The result is a genre-less collection of songs showcasing Tom's obsession with propelling sounds of the past into the present, and future, combining noise and edginess with his "commitment to fresh ideas with a clear sense of melodies," according to Clash Magazine. "My tastes are eclectic and I like to flirt with many different sub genres," says Tom. "The aim was to combine various styles while trying to maintain a common denominator," which committing to a full-length offered as an opportunity. Features Roxy Jules. Includes download.

ORGANISATION Tone Float LP
Repressed. Inner Space present a reissue of Organisation's Tone Float, originally released in 1970. German rock band, Organisation, is often referred to as the prototype or predecessor of Kraftwerk -- the godfathers of electronic music. In fact, it was the first iteration of Kraftwerk and if the band had managed to overrule its record label, RCA, Tone Float would have been credited as such. But given that the album was to be released only in the United Kingdom, the label opted for the more Anglicized name, "Organisation". Tone Float is the only album produced under this name and is a seminal example of the genre. Audiences in West Germany were fortunate enough to watch and listen to the whole album, played live for German television station, EDF, and it is this broadcast featured here. The bonus track "Vor Dem Blauen Bock" (more accurately, "Rückstoß Gondoliere"), is a notable rarity in that it includes a later Organisation line-up consisting of Kraftwerk's Florian Schneider and Klaus Dinger, and Michael Rother who would go on to form the band, Neu! Personnel: Ralf Hutter - organ; Basil Hammoudi - glockenspiel, conga gong, musical box, bangos-voice; Florian Scheider-Esleben - electric flute, alto flute, bell, triangle, tambourine, electro-violin; Butch Hauf - bass, shaky tube, small bells, plastic hammer; Fred Monicks - drums, bongos, maracas, cowbell, tambourine. OZKENT, MUSTAFA Genclik Ile Elele LP
2020 repress, black vinyl. "Originally released in Turkey 1973, Özkent's masterpiece (creation) of an all instrumental Turkish Psychedelic Funk album, filled with classic beats and breaks still inspires long time fans and first time listeners. The funky rhythms, hypnotic percussions, and heavy break beats makes this a holy grail amongst DJ's and music fans alike. Only a handful of copies from the original pressing are known to still exist making this reissue a welcome addition to any record collection. The concept is very complicated, futuristic and free from categorization. Traditional folk songs mixed with rock, jazz, blues, funk and psych. Özkent took traditional turkish folk songs and reconstructed them for the new 'hip' generation. It was recorded live in just one day with some of the best studio musicians in Turkey. The band was made up of 2 drummers, 2 guitarists, 2 percussionists, a bassist and a Hammond B3 organist. Özkent created his own unique guitar sound by adding extra frets and a clutch of effect pedals in order to create quarter notes and emulate turkish traditional scales. Mustafa Özkent has since made arrangements for hundreds of other artists in Turkey. But this unique album documents his most revered work. In the more than 40 years since the Mustafa Özkent Ve Orkestras? recorded Gençlik ?le Elele, it seems that the world is still just discovering this gem."

HOWLIN' WOLF, MUDDY WATERS, & BO DIDDLEY The Super Super Blues Band LP
2020 repress, blue vinyl. "Super Super Blues Band started out merely as Super Blues, a conglomerate of blues pillars Bo Diddley, Muddy Waters and Little Walter. When Little Walter bowed out and was replaced by Howlin' Wolf, they rightfully threw another Super on the name, and went on to release this burning, irreverent and even sometimes hilarious set of drunken, wild-eyed electric blues. Long form jams roll on in a trance as the trio of blues legends flex egos, talking shit to each other, trading off leads and ducking blasts of unexpected wah-wah guitar lines. Songs are peppered with an incredible level of banter between the trio of bandleaders that predicts the call and response sing-talking of early hip hop, laced with random screams in the background that teeter between celebration and danger. That these three ever got into the same room together is a miracle, and that they produced something so intense, energetic and weird is another almost unbelievable feat. The record is special enough as a stand-alone document of this meeting/melting of the minds before you find out the backing band consists of Hubert Sumlin, Otis Spann and freaking Buddy Guy. Lordy. Might have needed one more 'super' in there."

FAMILY FODDER Savoir Faire: The Best Of Family Fodder LP
"First time on vinyl. Limited transparent pale blue vinyl. A 'best of' collection of their series of eccentric post-punk singles and albums between 1979 and 1982. Described as 'entertaining idiosyncratic experimentalism' ('Who's Who of Indie and New Wave'), but they also have very evident pop sensibilities. Best known for their indie-chart hits such as 'Debbie Harry', 'Playing Golf With My Flesh Crawling' and 'Savoir Faire', today they sound like a forerunner of Stereolab. A group of musicians based around songwriter Alig Fodder, with vocals regularly contributed by French chanteuse Dominique Levillain, who met through mutual friends This Heat. This is an edited vinyl version of their 1998 'best of' CD, issued on Douglas Wolk's Dark Beloved Cloud label in the USA, with newly concise versions of some lengthier tracks. Since then they've regenerated and have issued new albums on various labels and also on Bandcamp. They've had their songs covered by a number of their many artist admirers, including Unrest (who turned Family Fodder's 'Debbie Harry' into 'Winona Ryder') and YACHT (who created internet waves with 'I Wanna F*** You Till I'm Dead')."

MATHIEU & EKKEHARD EHLERS, STEPHAN Heroin LP+12"
Between Christmas 2000 and New Year 2001, producers Ekkehard Ehlers and Stephan Mathieu recorded an album of warm, soft, delicately crackling electronic music in the space of that week. It was christened with the ambivalent title Heroin and was released on CD via the label Brombron in 2001 and later in 2003 re-issued on Kit Clayton's Orthlorng Musork on double-LP with remixes the pair had commissioned as expansions. 17 years later Heroin sees its first vinyl release to include all 13 tracks from the original CD track list on this LP plus 12" set. The centerpiece "Herz" finally receives its long deserved vinyl treatment (side C, at 45rpm) and on the flip side Thomas Brinkmann contributes a mirror in a magnificent remix of that very piece on side D. Ehlers and Mathieu were both highly prolific solo artists during the period 2000-2004, and in just two years after the initial release of Heroin each had produced over half a dozen new solo recordings: among them the serial masterpiece Ehlers' Plays released as five stunning LPs in a series on Staubgold, while Mathieu's Full Swing Edits spread over five 10" records plus his album FrequencyLib on Mille Plateaux, Die Entdeckung des Wetters on Lucky Kitchen, and The Sad Mac on Atsushi Sasaki's Headz label. Heroin is an album that embraces the happy accident being made up of reduced, often very catchy and very direct micro hooks which seem laser-guided into a space accepting obvious melodic beauty in what feels like an observation of musics unfolding and revealing it's DNA, embed with for a kind of yearning for innocence and naiveté -- as if Satie were on the jukebox in The Crying of Lot 49. The album not only sounds like that of two producers who are both dreamers and scientists, but that Ehlers and Mathieu chose to work with these means in a dialogue together to reduce pop music to its musical/tonal core, it is not pop music anymore, rather a ghostly pointilistic itteration of song. Heroin is located at this transition, around that point at which tracks, that were or could have become pop compositions, irrevocably slip into a static harmonic nirvana. Includes printed inner sleeves and download code; Edition of 500.

SISAMOUTH, SINN Groove Club Vol. 4: Sinn Sisamouth LP
"Discovering the wealth of Cambodian recordings was like falling into a parallel universe, complete with its own Elvises, Patsys and Jimis. You can recognize some of the anonymous outstanding instrumentalists as they appear on record after record and marvel at their uncanny blend of Western and Far East, a pure synergy Western musicians have never accomplished. Of course, looming over every recording is the tragic end of the music and the musicians themselves under the axe of the Khmer Rouge, a cloak of darkness hovering over some of the most joyous, festive music ever made. In a world of instant global communication and mass pop culture, Cambodian rock remains one of the few undiscovered secrets of music. Not content with killing the musicians, the government further ordered the destruction of their records, implicitly understanding the power of pop music to create community. It is a testament to the power of Sinn Sisamouth's music that it has survived all that has been done to vanquish it." --Joel Selvin, author/journalist. ITCHY BUGGER Double Bugger LP
Supremely hungover, red-eyed-and-can't-quite-be-arsed but utterly life-affirming bedroom/loner-pop masterpiece from the Itchy Bugger. Songs that somehow combine punk concision and psychedelic whimsy... lusher and more intricately arranged than on the first LP, even as they double down on the DIY, drug-scrambled weirdness, and that unmistakably private, nocturnal, kitchen-creeping, don't-wake-the-flatmates vibe... oh yeah and still with that same sad-sack fucking drum-machine beat on every song. The careening post-punk riffage contributed to Heavy Metal and Diät is here repurposed into something more textured and introspective and jangling and dazed, making you recall The Moles, Pip Proud, Alastair Galbraith, subtly out early '90s Flying Nun gems like David Kilgour's Here Comes The Cars (1991) as well as things like Television Personalities, Razorcuts, Solid Space, and all those long hot summers that passed you by...

DIABOLICAL LIBERTIES, THE High Protections & The Sportswear Mystics LP
The Diabolical Liberties release their debut album High Protection & The Sportswear Mystics via the boundary-breaking On The Corner Records label. Comprising Rob Gallagher (vocals, guitar, bass) and Alex Patchwork (head of squarepushing), the duo's debut long player is a rough, unpolished gem of a record that falls clumsily in the gaps between post-punk, electronica, and jazz. Lead single "Sliders" embodies this identity crisis, simultaneously honoring and deriding the ubiquity of said footwear over resonant breakbeats, plonking cowbell and the screeching horn of Ignacio Salvadores (King Krule, Gal Go). Elsewhere, the brilliant Emma Jean Thackray sprinkles "High Protection" with cosmic dust, "Bigger Than You" is a ramshackle (but no less respectful) homage to the '70s Ghanaian disco/fusion purveyed by legends like Ebo Taylor and Pat Thomas. All produced and recorded in a shed, on train platforms, trains, tubes, and occasionally Caffè Nero in Cheam when it was quieter than home. High Protection & The Sportswear Mystics follows a series of self-released and long sold-out white label 12"s and 7"s that included collaborations with Nyasha (a moniker of Nubya Garcia) and a super-limited On The Corner 10" dubplate. All the musical (con)fusion starts to make sense when you take into account Gallagher's long and distinguished career in music. A truly original British voice, he was a stalwart of the mid-80s London jazz scene (centered around the WAG club and Dingwalls) and a key agitator/forerunner of the fusion that was bubbling up. He formed the band Galliano in 1987 and was the first signing to Eddie Piller and Gilles Peterson's now legendary Acid Jazz record label. Sidestepping onto Peterson's freshly minted Talkin' Loud imprint, Galliano's debut album In Pursuit Of The 13th Note materialized in 1991 and was an international hit -- effortlessly marrying cosmic funk, blues and an aura inspired by spiritual jazz with a conscious, poetic flow. The don dada Roy Ayers contributed vibes and scat. Four albums later in 1997, Gallagher disbanded Galliano and embarked on a solo career as Earl Zinger. The following year he formed the jazz/electronic duo Two Banks of Four with Dilip Harris aka Demus, releasing City Watching on Ben Wilcox's Sirkus label in 2000. Later, in 2012, he was also behind the experimental blues/folk/dub project William Adamson on Brownswood Recordings and most recently collaborated with Emanative and Rocketnumber9 on 2013's Over EP.

NACE/GRAHAM LAMBKIN, BILL Dishwashers LP
"Bill Nace and Graham Lambkin first played together in Fall 2018, in Kentucky, behind plastic. In that performance, they sometimes played the same instrument at the same time. Time passed, then they recorded this album in Fall 2019, in London. I was told that an acoustic guitar, a cymbal and tapes were used in the recording and I have no reason to doubt that. There are also voices, birds, a room, the outside world...; a bow is used. Bill & Graham both deal in different kinds of tension & discomfort and while this album is both like & unlike what I've heard from either of them, it is somewhat remarkably laid-back. Though there are separate and distinct tracks, they flow into each other organically. Not without some jagged interruptions -- in fact, many of the tracks *announce* themselves with a sudden cough, squeak or scrape -- but the field recording aspects (passing cars, a siren, some banter) act as a leitmotif holding things together, adding a casual ambiance that *almost* invites a casual listen. But it is deceptive in that way. It is not a hermetic recording. As much as it doesn't exclude the sounds of the outside world, it also lies open to interpretation. Themes recur just enough to create a connective tissue that frames some of the more seemingly disparate elements. Brief fragments of conversation invite the mind to try to understand and create its own narrative; a pizzicato, modal folksong played on guitar, then played back on tape at the end of Side A has a reprise midway through Side B; hints of ancient music are bowed or chanted... This is not a tapestry without thread, but you've also got to bring some of your own." --Greg Kelley, Somerville, MA 2020

Pleasure For Music present a reissue of Don Sebesky's The Distant Galaxy, originally released in 1968. Donald John Sebesky was born in Perth Amboy, New Jersey, USA, on December 10, 1937; his father worked in a steel-cable factory, his mother was a housewife. At the age of eight he started learning the accordion; he later came to realize that this instrument was the best possible choice he could have made because, as he says, "the accordion is a 'mini-orchestra' and teaches the principles of harmony from the very beginning." In 1965, Don Sebesky joined Verve Records when Creed Taylor was still a producer for the label. One of his most distinctive and successful arrangements was for Wes Montgomery's album Bumpin' released the same year. In 1967, when Taylor left the company to launch his own CTI, Sebesky joined the newborn label as staff arranger, giving his precious contribution in creating many hit records. During the late '60s/early '70s, his orchestral backgrounds helped make artists like Montgomery, George Benson (Shape of Things To Come, 1968), Paul Desmond (From the Hot Afternoon, 1969), and Freddie Hubbard (First Light, 1971) acceptable to audiences outside of jazz. Originally released on Verve in 1968, The Distant Galaxy is quite a hybrid of soul jazz and space-age music, an influential cornerstone fully sampled by a who's who of hip-hop and R&B superstar like Rakim, Madlib, and Buck 65. Such an obscure and terrific album that features a blend of jazz, psych and good old '60s light pop with brief "cosmic" audio tidbits inserted between most of the main tracks.

LIGHT AND THE LIGHT BRIGADE, ENOCH Permissive Polyphonics LP
Pleasure For Music present a reissue of Enoch Light and the Light Brigade's Permissive Polyphonics, originally released in 1970. As if the title doesn't give it away, Permissive Polyphonics finds the king of studio kings attempting to make it in the groovy, quadraphonic age. Featuring the gassy "Puppet Man", a futuristic rendition of Sergio Mendes's "Mas Que Nada" -- with bass flute courtesy of veteran Don Ashworth -- and "Pass and I Call You" with Dick Hyman's stunny organ and Vinnie Bell's fuzzy guitar, this album is an extraordinary example of easy listening at the turn of the revolutionary flower power era. Originally released in 1970 on Project 3 Total Sound.

MELVOIN, MIKE The Plastic Cow Goes Moooooog LP
Pleasure For Music present a reissue of Mike Melvoin's The Plastic Cow Goes Moooooog, originally released in 1969. With sound engineer and synth wizard Bernie Krause and Paul Beaver on board, this record falls easily in the realm of space-age pop. Originally released in 1970 on Dot Records and distributed by Paramount Pictures, the album would have been a DJ tool favorite for quite a while thanks to some heavy breaks and proto-electro loops. Featuring amazing rendition of pop-rock classics such as "Born To Be Wild", "Sunshine Of Your Love", "Lay Lady Lay", and "The Ballad Of John And Yoko" this is a truly welcomed reissue!

XIAN ORPHIC Xian Orphic LP
Limited restock. The newest addition to the Pre-Cert library comes from Xian Orphic, a new recording project from Andy Votel, combining new automated analog music, positive meditational repeaters and neo-tantric sound collages presented in five parts. This multi-purpose music draws from a broad range of kindred influences and approaches synchronized transcendental/nu-religious/metaphysical and sensual music forms from a new perspective, drawing direct influence from private music pioneers such as Kat Epple, Marc Disler, Dariush Dolat Shahi, Mark Shreeve, Suzanne Ciani and Ramases while giving nods to sound sculptures by the likes of Egisto Macchi, Bernard Parmegiani and Bruno Spoerri. Like many Pre-Cert releases, this project is as a micro-archive of experiments and references, leaving an open-ended avenue for further volumes. By contrasting processed modular synth tones with recorded and transposed melodic pulses, Xian Orphic adds lo-fi domestic sounds and classic Kosmische to paint positive psychological relationships. The overall effect manages to reflect elements of German electronic records while re-contextualizing the more optimistic moments of popular horror soundtracks by artists like Alan Howarth, Klaus Schultze and John Carpenter. Cut at Dubplates & Mastering.

DILLINGER Top Ranking Dillinger LP
Radiation Roots present a reissue of Dillinger's Top Ranking Dillinger, originally released in 1977. One of Jamaica's most popular "deejays" or rappers, Dillinger was one of the few Jamaican sound system toasters to rise to international prominence as a recording artist during the mid-1970s. Born Lester Bullocks in 1953, he was raised by his grandmother in a peripheral neighborhood located on the outskirts of Kingston. After moving into a tough ghetto area in western Kingston, he became a protégé of Dennis Alcapone, the star deejay on an influential set called El Paso, and was known as Young Alcapone until the maverick producer Lee "Scratch" Perry renamed him Dillinger, cutting a dozen or so tracks at Dynamic Sounds studio in 1973, of which the most noteworthy was "Dub Organiser," which saluted King Tubby and his sound system. Recordings for Phil Pratt, Augustus Pablo, The Abyssinians, and GG Records led to an impressive album for Studio One, but it wasn't until he began recording for Ossie Hibbert and Joseph Hoo Kim at Channel One that the world took notice, following the dramatic success of Island's CB200 album and its breakthrough hit, "Cokane In My Brain." The album Top Raking Dillinger was produced by Bunny Lee in 1977 and sees the toaster in fine rapping form over some of Lee's toughest contemporary rhythms, including Ronnie Davis's "Hard Times" for "Rat A Cut Bottle" and Johnny Clarke's update of Alton Ellis's "Cry Tough" for "Ranking Of The Past." There are also roots mutations of past classics, including Cornell Campbell's take of Bob Marley's "War" for "War Is Not the Answer," Johnny Clarke's version of "Waiting In Vain" for the cheeky "Check Sister Jane," a cut of The Silvertones' "Smile" as "Three Mile Rock," a horns-laden take of the perennial "Get Ready" as "Judgement Day Rock" and a version of "Melody Life" as "Don't Watch Your Wife."

BEANY MAN The Invincible Beany Man (The 10 Year Old D.J. Wonder) LP
Radiation Roots present a reissue of Beany Man's The Invincible Beany Man (The 10 Year Old D.J. Wonder), originally released in 1987. Dancehall superstar Beenie Man has enjoyed a career unmatched for its length and diversity. Born Moses Davis in 1973, he claims to have started toasting on his uncle's sound system, Master Blaster, at five years old; during his harsh youth, he became a semi-wild creature of the streets and lived as a near homeless person, suffering from malnourishment, before music became his ultimate salvation. His debut recording, "Too Fancy," was produced by political "enforcer"-turned-producer, Henry "Junjo" Lawes, after he won a popular talent contest where the price was a recording contract, though nothing much happened with that particular release. Beenie Man recorded his debut album for hit-making producer Bunny Lee, released as The Invincible Beany Man (The 10 Year Old D.J. Wonder), while he was already a steady fixture on Lee's Unlimited, a vintage sound system established in 1968 in Springfield, a small town in the eastern parish of Saint Thomas, and then one of Jamaica's most prominent sets. On the album, his flow is well-honed, his chatter sounding entirely skillful and confident, the rhymes flowing from his mouth with ease and fervor. On one track, he even dares to compare himself to Bob Marley and as the future would prove, such bragging was not some idle boast! In the best dancehall tradition, the rhymes are relayed over the barest of electro synthesizer rhythms and the subject matter of the chatter is all over the place; on the opening track "Woman Labba Labba" he warns of loose female tongues, relates sound system battles on "Sound Boy Kuffing," appeals to his peers "Try Some Hustling" and decries the anatomy of thin ladies on "Bony Punanny" (over a harsh "Freedom Blues" recut); he praises the general allure of females on "Girls Nowadays," warns of the potential of bothersome insects to ruin a romantic tryst on "Insects Nuh Bother We," and relates the prevalence of gun crime and the negative impact of cocaine along the way, among many other topics. Even though the original track list was a bit out of sequence with the songs themselves, the youth's incredible potential is entirely evident throughout.

WAYNE (WITH SLY, ROBBIE & THE AGGROVATORS), JOHN Boogie Down LP
The Jamaican dancehall artist known as John Wayne was born Norval Headley in 1962 in rural St Elizabeth. He first reached the studio in the early 1980s, recording "Racket Girls In Jackets" for the Root Out label, where you can already hear the fearsome skill unleashed by Wayne at the microphone, showing why he was a favorite of top-ranking sound systems such as Black Scorpio, Kilimanjaro, Jammy's, and Studio Mix. In 1983 he traveled to New York, appearing on a 12" of Sugar Minott's "Jamming In The Street," while the Hoo-Kim brothers paired him with Johnny Slaughter for "Rain Fall, Sun Shine." That same year, Bunny "Striker" Lee produced his only album, titled Boogie Down and issued by Vista Sounds in the UK. Because Striker had access to such killer rhythms, the album is a real treat. Opening track "Jailhouse" rides a slow "Queen Of The Minstrel" recut, patterned similar to Welton Irie's "Army Life"; the aptly-named "Heavy Rhythm" recounts his skill at rhyming, "African Princess" praises black women over a sparse recut of "No More Will I Roam," "Bend Your Back" speaks of various aspects of ghetto life, before Side One closes out with title track "Boogie Down" on the immortal "Late Night Blues" rhythm. On side two, "Bubble With Me" uses a "Drifter" recut to give a massive salute to Bunny Lee and the engineer Professor at King Tubby's studio; "Too Greedy" rides a "Real Rock" recut while the self-referential "Go John Wayne Go" rides Johnny Osbourne's great "Yo Yo," the result so appealing that it gained airplay on John Peel's influential radio show in England (and Wayne keeps up the pressure on "Murder Style" and closing number "Me Deep" too). Wayne scored a massive hit in 1985 when Jammy placed him on "Sleng Teng" for "Call The Police" and he went on to record for George Phang, King Tubby, and Witty Henry before becoming a producer himself. Sadly, John Wayne died of kidney failure in 2014, so we are fortunate that Boogie Down captured the man at the peak of his powers.

WILSON, DELROY Better Must Come LP
Radiation Roots present a reissue of Delroy Wilson's Better Must Come, originally released in 1971. Delroy Wilson was one of the best-beloved vocalists in the history of reggae. Born in 1948 in the infamous slum of Trench Town, Wilson is regarded as Jamaica's first child star, having signed a contract with future Studio One founder, Clement "Sir Coxsone" Dodd, at the tender age of thirteen. Wilson was blessed with a mellifluous voice and his strong range and expressive tone made him a natural for recording. Debut album I Shall Not Remove caused a sensation on release in 1964 and as Jamaican music evolved in the mid-60s the hits kept coming. Delroy's second album, Good All Over (1969), was another landmark release of the early reggae phase, although he had already begun recording for other producers, most notably teaming with Bunny Lee for a smash rendition of The Isley Brothers' "This Old Heart Of Mine." As Jamaica geared up for an era-defining general election, Delroy Wilson and Bunny Lee captured the public's imagination with "Better Must Come," which topped the charts in 1971. The popularity of the song was such that leftist candidate Michael Manley adopted it as his campaign theme, leading to a landslide victory the following year. The Better Must Come album was recorded at Dynamic Sounds, then the best-equipped studio in the Caribbean region, with Bunny Lee in the producer's chair and Sid Bucknor and Carlton Lee as resident engineers. In addition to the opening title track, there is a range of classic Delroy here: "Better To Be Loved" puts his soulful delivery over a creeping "John Crow" organ skank; "Can't Explain" describes the passionate allure of his new lover, while "It's You I Love" grafts Delroy's soulful tenor atop a sparse reggae riff, before "Dance With You" recalls a missed opportunity on the dancefloor. The determined "Try Again" is delivered in heavily accented patois, before Delroy drifts into reggae-funk territory with a killer cut of The Isleys' "It's Your Thing"; "Keep An Eye" warns of deceptive friends with ulterior motives and the organ-heavy "Drink Wine" salutes the uplifting qualities of fermented grapes, before closing things off with an alternate reading of Shep and The Limelights' "Stick By Me." Adding to the appeal is an individual drum sound, lively guitar picking and variations on the organ skank, keeping things interesting throughout.

DINOSAUR JR. Green Mind Cassette
Radiation Tapes present a cassette reissue of Dinosaur Jr.'s Green Mind, originally released in 1991. Formed in 1984, Dinosaur Jr. carved a singular path through the latter half of the 1980s, issuing three highly influential albums in the process before finding a home with Sire Records, who issued Green Mind in 1991 as the alternative American rock scene the band had long been part of exploded globally. Produced by a stripped-down line-up of the group (in fact, J Mascis himself plays almost everything), the album and Sire's international reach took Dinosaur Jr's reputation to a new level, aided by the singles The Wagon (1990) and Whatever's Cool With Me (1991), a non-album EP of new material and live recordings, all of which are included here alongside a previously unreleased live recording capturing the group at the Hollywood Palladium in June 1991. Critically lauded on release, Green Mind remains one of the band's strongest collections, and a firm fan favorite. Limited edition of 350 on cassette.

Produced by a new line-up of the group (longtime drummer Murph and new bassist Mike Johnson completing the three-piece), the album became the band's most successful up to that point, reaching #50 in the US (where it sold over a quarter of a million copies) and #10 in the UK album charts, and spawning the hit single, "Start Choppin". Released to unanimously positive reviews, and containing many tracks that would become staples and fan favorites, "Where You Been" continued Dinosaur Jr.'s global ascent, being issued simultaneously across the US, Europe, Australasia, Asia, and South America. Performed primarily by J Mascis, Without A Sound continued the band's growth in popularity and commercial achievement, reaching #44 in the US (their highest ever album placing there) and featuring the hit singles "Feel The Pain" and "I Don't Think So". DINOSAUR JR. Hand It Over Cassette
Radiation Tapes present a cassette reissue of Dinosaur Jr.'s Hand It Over, originally released in 1997. Formed in 1984, Dinosaur Jr. carved a singular path through the latter half of the 1980s and first half of the 1990s, issuing a number of highly influential albums in the process. Hand It Over, their seventh record, appeared in the spring of 1997 following a lengthy absence, and would prove to be the band's final album-length offering for a decade. Performed primarily by J Mascis, Hand It Over appeared at a time of declining international interest in American alternative rock, but nevertheless received widespread approval and appreciation amongst critics and reviewers. The album was accompanied, unusually, by an EP of non-album songs recorded for the Matt Dillon movie Grace Of My Heart (1996) and, later, a vinyl-only "I'm Insane" 7" single, all of which are collected here alongside a previously unreleased concert recording made in Stockholm and two tracks performed for ABC TV in Australia. Accompanied by in-depth sleeve notes from Mojo's Keith Cameron (based on recent and exclusive interviews with J Mascis), this edition provides a final view of a band about to disappear from the limelight but still as engaging and powerful as ever. ERIKSEN TRIO, ESPEN End Of Summer CD
After the highly successful Perfectly Unhappy (RCD 2199CD/RLP 3199LP, 2018) album with Andy Sheppard, the trio is back with a new album featuring seven brand new songs from the pianist. Captivating and lyrical, always melodic and often melancholic and uplifting at the same time, these are all real tunes. End Of Summer was recorded in Oslo in April during lockdown. After getting all their concerts cancelled because of the pandemic, Espen Eriksen says it was very inspiring to still be able to meet in a recording studio to make new music and keep it all alive. This being their first recording in five years as a trio, Espen is also keen to stress that the collaboration with Andy was not a one-off and that the plan is to "continue working together for a very long time." Espen Eriksen Trio was formed in 2007 and released their debut album in 2010, End Of Summer being their fifth. They have toured on four continents, becoming an increasingly popular live act, with a wealth of rich material on their repertoire. The music relies on highly melodic and lyrical instrumentals and a "less is more" approach and is often credited for its unique voice within today's jazz scene by the international press. To quote BBC in their review of the trio's second album; "A wonderfully plaintive jazz record, abandoned to the lost art of melodic minimalism, stripped back and beautifully near bare. No smoke and mirrors, just the graceful chemistry of superb musicians at the top of their game." All three musicians have versatile backgrounds ranging from pop to jazz and have played with musicians like Bugge Wesseltoft, John Scofield, Joshua Redman, Dhafer Yousef, John Taylor, Vince Mendoza, Eivind Aarset, Knut Reisersrud, Mathias Eick, Nils Petter Molvær, Thomas Strønen, Odd Nordstoga, Håkon Kornstad, Jarle Bernhoft, and Bendik Hofseth. The album quickly sold out, with original copies sought after by collectors and fans of Murray McNabb and Kim Paterson (who appear on the LP), both pioneers of jazz rock in New Zealand in the early 1970s. Co-producer Murray McNabb (1947-2013), keyboardist with legendary NZ jazz rock group, Dr Tree in the 1970s, recorded his album Song For The Dreamweaver with ECM artists Ron McLure and Adam Nussbaum in New York (1990), and had performed with the likes of Don Cherry, Ed Blackwell, Charlie Haden, Joe Henderson, and Sam Rivers. He was also a top-tier composer/arranger for film, television, and radio. Also features contributions from Brian Smith (Ian Carr's Nucleus, Keith Tippet, Centipede). Deluxe tip-on gatefold jacket."Gianmarco Liguori has created his own fascinating niche in music which exists at a place where jazz, soundtracks and improvised art music intersect -- mesmerizing, sometimes eerily ambient -- grounded in electronica soundtracks, experimental Miles Davis of the seventies, slightly funky eighties jazz-rock with a nod to minimalism and impressionism. FLUGEL, ROMAN Tracks On Delivery 3LP
Roman Flügel presents: Sister Midnight! What started as a party series that saw Roman inviting friends and favorites is turning into a full-fledged label adventure now. Shaped to be the vehicle for old and new Roman Flügel music alike, unreleased surprises and previously released sure shots from the archives, it's the first time after his involvement in the seminal Playhouse and Klang label universe, that he tends to such an enterprise himself -- with the help and support of Running Back records. Now, the journey of Roman Flügel's own Sister Midnight label starts with the valuable Tracks On Delivery series. Originally released on the third jewel in the Playhouse crown (Ongaku Musik) from 2000 to 2002, it's a meditation on and contemplation of techno. Remastered, recut, and repackaged as a triple vinyl edition with the addition of two previously unreleased "Pattern". Pristine sound design, hypnotic wizardry and dry then architecture let all of them appear as if they haven't aged a day. Or as Roman says himself: "I've always tried to push myself into new territories since I started music production. Those new territories can surely be achieved by the endless possibilities of inspiration, chaos and will power. At the time of the production of my Pattern series as under the name Tracks On Delivery I was highly inspired by some of Andrew Weatherall's techno sets while visiting London for some of his Blood Sugar Parties. Tracks On Delivery is unthinkable without the crude 'Germanic' mixture of Detroit labels like Jay Denham's Black Nation and Weatherall's own UK Techno imprints like Emissions Output. The Pattern Series, back then created for the Frankfurt based Ongaku Musik label, and now I am very happy to be able to release 15 original Patterns along two unreleased Patterns on my own Sister Midnight label."

BELL, ANDY The View From Halfway Down CD
Ride guitarist/singer Andy Bell releases his debut solo album. The product of a gradual, four-year process and finished during lockdown, the album was entirely written and recorded by Andy, engineered by Gem Archer and mastered by Heba Kadry. Back in 2016, Andy was inspired by David Bowie's death to be more proactive about finishing his songs, more confident about sharing them and to channel all of this into finally making a solo album. He laid down some tracks in former Beady Eye and Oasis bandmate Gem's studio, but got diverted when Ride's live reunion blossomed into a full return. A run of two albums, an EP and two world tours later, it would take a pandemic to give Andy the space to complete The View From Halfway Down. From the ecstatic psych pop of "Love Comes In Waves", to the heady loops of "Indica" and deeply groove-led "Skywalker", the eight tracks mix summery melodies with soundscapes and studio experimentation. The end result sits neatly between Ride's widescreen shoegaze and GLOK's textured electronics, variously inspired by The Stone Roses, Spacemen 3, The Beatles, The Byrds, The Beta Band, Stereolab, Neu!, Can, John Fahey, The Kinks, The La's, The Who, and the United States Of America. As for the album title, it comes from a particularly dark episode of BoJack Horseman and a poem that scriptwriter Alison Tafel wrote for the penultimate show. The spoiler-free version of the story goes like this: "The poem describes someone committing suicide by jumping to their death and the regret the protagonist experiences when he sees 'the view from halfway down'. Although, of course, it's too late to change what's going to happen. I read this poem as having a message of suicide prevention: if you could see the view from halfway down, you would never go through with anything that would end your life. I've never been suicidal, but I felt really moved by this brilliant poem when I watched the show during Ride's US tour in Autumn 2019 . . . The early stages of lockdown, you could feel the tension in the air, causing what felt like a global panic attack. But, in common with what I've heard from others who can experience anxiety for no reason in their everyday lives, I felt strangely calm in the midst of all of this, seeing things in my life very clearly. Such clarity allowed me to finally compile this record..." LP version comes on blue vinyl.

GUFFOND & ERIK K SKODVIN, JASMINE The Burrow LP
"... [T]he most beautiful thing about my burrow is the stillness. Of course, that is deceptive. At any moment it may be shattered and then all will be over. For the time being, however, the silence is with me." --Franz KafkaIn early 2019, at the Sonic Pieces ten-year anniversary in Berlin, label head Monique Recknagel hand-picked three duos from the imprint to perform live together for the first time. One of the collaborations was between Deaf Center's Erik K Skodvin and electronic composer Jasmine Guffond. The performance went so well that Monique commissioned the duo to record a full-length together. Six months later, Guffond and Skodvin headed to Berlin's VOX-TON studio and recorded for two days, joined by Finnish musician Merja Kokkonen (Islaja), who improvised wordless vocals. With Guffond on laptop and a cymbal and Skodvin using piano, feedback, Farfisa organ, and percussion, the two composed an album of deep, enveloping sound that slithers through genre, absorbing Kokkonen's unique voice into five intricate and evolving pieces. "The Burrow" takes its name from Franz Kafka's unfinished short story that was written only six months before his death. The tale, published posthumously in 1931, centres around a small creature who builds a burrow that's anxiously fortified in an attempt to protect against perceived attacks. This sense of fear of the outside world feels even more focused in 2020. Each track is named after animals that are either extinct or almost extinct, adding a sense of loss that hangs in the air, punctuated by screams and deep reverberating piano hits. As the world we thought we knew quickly retreats from view and the idea of safety shifts rapidly, Skodvin and Guffond explore the impulse to protect what we know with an emotionally charged sound that provides a foil with cautious, haunting spaces in between. Printed inner sleeve; includes download code; edition of 500.

GUFFOND, JASMINE Yellow Bell LP
Jasmine Guffond is an original creator of conceptual sound. This first output under her own name is its own study, and if you've heard her former projects Jasmina Maschina or Minit, you should not be surprised at the different driving force and fresh structure of sound behind this new venture. However, if you're anticipating veins of clean, melodious folk or purely experimental electronic, you should shift your expectations. Yellow Bell presents a broad spectrum of musicality, floating within hazy electronics, lost vocals, and ambient dimensions. The balance of digital synthesizer, loops, processed voice, and guitar creates a meticulous soundscape that both intrigues and calms. With its delicacy and immediacy, Yellow Bell distorts the perception of time and creates an environment for engagement and understanding. While creating its own memorable dynamic, Yellow Bell resonates with the delayed endlessness of Grouper or lovesliescrushing and touches on the early electronic sounds of musique concrete. 2020 repress. Full tone cover artwork, including printed inner sleeve; grey vinyl; includes download code; edition of 300.

POTTS, STEVE Musique Pour Le Film d'Un Ami CD
Souffle Continu Records present the first ever reissue of Steve Potts's Musique Pour Le Film d'Un Ami, originally released in 1975. In 1975, Steve Potts left Steve Lacy for a time to compose Musique Pour Le Film d'Un Ami following the proposition from the film's director Joaquín Lledó. With guest musicians of quality and from vairied horizons, the saxophonist recorded a soundtrack ranging from modal jazz to free funk and from dirty grooves, to java wah-wah with disconcerting elegance. Rather than blaxploitation, Potts and his group offer us their mixploitation made in Paris which would be recognized way beyond the boundaries of La Défense. If you have never seen Sujet ou le secrétaire aux 1001 tiroirs (1975), Steve Potts will allow you to listen to it. The film was made by a friend of his, Joaquin Noessi, a pseudonym of Joaquín Lledó, for which the saxophonist composed the music in the mid-70s. It was recorded in Saint-Germain-des-Prés and Potts was joined by the musicians he played with regularly at the time with Steve Lacy (Jean-Jacques Avenel, Ambrose Jackson, Kenneth Tyler) but not just them... Because, on Musique Pour Le Film d'Un Ami, you hear funk musicians (pianist Frank Abel and percussionist Donny Donable, both also expatriates, who played in the group Ice), nimble French musicians (Elie Ferré and Christian Escoudé on guitars, Joss Basselli on accordion) and unclassifiable men-of-all-seasons (Keno Speller on percussion and Gus Nemeth on double bass). The production was assured by another iconoclastic figure: Jef Gilson. It was an eclectic team, and they made an eclectic album, as shown by the track titles. Steve Potts just has to shake it all up and let the notes pour out: modal, (even cosmic, jazz) free funk, dirty grooves, cool jam sessions, bistro boogie, java wah-wah... Musique Pour Le Film d'Un Ami is a shattering album of shattered atmospheres. Remastered from the master tapes. Restored artwork. Licensed from Steve Potts.

BELLAICHE, ALAIN Sea Fluorescent CD
Souffle Continu Records present the first ever reissue of Alain Bellaïche's Sea Fluorescent, originally released in 1976. Frenchman who is on the return from the USA is something unusual. Everything seemed to start out well for Alain Bellaïche: Born in Tunis, childhood in Cannes, studies at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, his first folk concerts folk in youngsters' houses and clubs where everyone was well behaved... Then, in 1973, he left for the States. Bellaïche would settle for around ten years, with, as a soundtrack, the two albums that he would record there. Metropolitain (1974), which was the fruit of his collaboration with the Heldon guitarist Alain Renaud, and Sea Fluorescent. In the catalog of Asylum, David Geffen's first label, Bellaïche's music was listed alongside that of the Byrds, Tom Waits, Joni Mitchell, and Bob Dylan. In a Rock & Folk interview, Bellaïche expressed his regrets as to the prudence of French musicians: "I never had a group... perhaps the guys here are not motivated to play this kind of music." It's of note that the influences of the expatriate were, for example, Led Zeppelin, John McLaughlin, Weather Report, Herbie Hancock, The Spencer Davis Group... Bellaïche, a multi-faceted and iconoclastic musician, composed Sea Fluorescent just following his desires: from a cosmic ballad ("St Andrea"), to West Coast funk ("California"), dreamlike Spanish influences ("Spanish Roots"), optimistic blues ("Foolin' Myself"), a solar track ("I'm Angry", "Sun Blues"). And the Frenchman was in good company: Jean-Marie Fabiano (from Fabiano Orchestra) on percussion, Jerry Mahavishnu Goodman on violin on "Got My Place In That Country" or John Hicks whose cascades of notes bring reggae and western closer to the "reassembled" jazz that the pianist was playing at the time. A highly sought-after French jazz funk fusion nugget. Remastered from the master tapes. Licensed from Alain Bellaïche. CD version includes Kirlian Effect's self-titled, two-track EP.

FELBM Tape 3/Tape 4 LP
Following on from his previous debut album Tape 1/Tape 2 on Soundway, Felbm delivers Tape 3/Tape 4: an intimate, emotional, lilting, and melodic solo project. These 14 lo-fi, instrumental, jazz-infused sketches were written on guitar, with cascading keyboards, vibraphone, and drum machine. Possessing a restorative and soothing quality, it goes some way to balancing out a chaotic year for the world at large. With echoes of the dreamier end of 1980s English indie-pop, minimal ambient music, and Brazilian bossa-nova, Eelco Topper's musical storybook includes touches of The Durutti Column, hints of Antônio Carlos Jobim and Baden Powell, whilst all set firmly in the summer fields of Germany and the Netherlands. The recording method used for the creation and recording of Tape 3/Tape 4 follows the same as his previous release: all sketches were initially recorded onto cassette on a 4-track tape machine. Most notably a vibraphone finds its way onto almost every track fitting Topper's sound-palette perfectly: warm yet distinctive, a percussive as well as sustaining sound that evokes some melancholy and a certain timeless nostalgia. Features that most certainly also apply to the other "new" instrument on the tapes: mellotron flutes. Tape 3/Tape 4 navigates the space between quiet, open, meditative tunes and more solid instrumental works, reflecting his constant search for an optimal balance between stillness and movement. For fans of: KPM Library Records, Basil Kirchin, Gaussian Curve, Young Marco, Greg Foat, Bibio, L'éclair.

GUIRAUD, CHRISTOPHE Kutra Bégulma * Unfinished Altar 2LP
Ars Subtilior (14th Century) and the Noise: the two inspirations of Christophe Guiraud which are like two rivers which are woven in a writing of great power. The young French composer is the link between the most accomplished scholarly music and some radical aspects of noise. Born in Toulouse mid-seventies, he settles in Brussels -- which becomes the crossroads of a continuous creation. He currently works and has been collaborating since several years with numerous European ensembles and musicians such as Ensemble Ictus, Phønix16, Tom Pauwels, Timo Kreuser, Ensemble 21, Sturm und Klang. His most recent pieces intimately mix instrumental timbre and sound hybridization, cultivating a certain secrecy around this alchemy. On Kutra Bégulma * Unfinished Altar more than everywhere else, Christophe Guiraud's compositions create a dialog between the times, from the polyphony of Ars Nova to Spectralism, while integrating his noise heritage. Resolutely an-historical, the last pieces presented here unfold in a trembling stagnation. The ensemble of the pieces creates coherence across a wide range of musicians coming from different places and traditions and from different ensembles -- everything is woven together towards a rather spectacular conclusion: Tarentule Ensemble (Paris), Phønix 16 Ensemble (Berlin), Laps Ensemble (Brussels) with the support of Bernard Sberro (Tel Aviv), Julien Boutonnier (Toulouse) Pauline Claes (Brussels), Jessica Constable (London), and Iris Terdjiman (Napoli). BOW BOW CD
Brussels-based string quintet BOW celebrates musical freedom. Juggling between their own written music and pure improvisation, the ensemble has worked since its creation on a personal and modern approach, digging into their instruments' capabilities and blending a large scope of influences. Its debut eponym album, due to be released on Sub Rosa, gathers five instantly-composed pieces that were recorded live by Christine Verschorren in the Echo Collective studio in Brussels. During the day, BOW repeated musical concepts, textures, and interactive games. Then, during the night, with the machine already well-oiled and the musicians free of all expectations, the ensemble embarked out into the unknown, discovering with wonder unexplored sonic territories, delivering a deep and profound music woven with five strands of yarn. Over the years, BOW has collaborated with artists such as jazz singer Melanie De Biaso, composer Laurent Plumhans, VJ Dirty Monitor, Théâtre de l'Ancre, and most recently with the gypsy guitarist Myrddin De Cauter as well as Aidan Baker. A first EP was released in 2019 on Icarus Records, a live radio session duplicated on limited cassette edition. BOW is an ensemble made up of the musicians Margaret Hermant (Echo Collective) and Benoit Leseure on violin, Jean-François Durdu on viola, Marine Horbaczewski on cello, and Cyrille de Haes (Otto Lindholm) on double bass.

VLADISLAV DELAY/SLY DUNBAR/ROBBIE SHAKESPEARE 500-Push-Up LP
Repressed; LP version. From Mille Plateaux to Leaf, Staubgold, and Raster-Noton, ~scape, among others, or on his own label Ripatti, the Finnish artist Sasu Ripatti, aka Vladislav Delay, has been exploring various iterations of the "dub culture vs. electronica", since 1997. His sonic crafts and unique signature sound have been sought after by an eclectic range of bands and artists, ranging from Massive Attack, Hauschka, Black Dice, Autopoieses, Animal Collective, or AGF. Vladislav Delay met Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare (the most prolific Jamaican rhythm section and production duo) thanks to a series of jam sessions. Trumpet player Nils-Petter Molvaer had been asked by the Jamaicans to join them and he invited Delay alongside guitar player Eivind Aarset to tag along, which eventually turned into the Nordub project. The result of these jam sessions turned into an album, mixed and mostly produced by Vladislav Delay, released on the label Okeh. It was also followed by an extensive series of live dates. This one-shot reunion was the beginning of another story: a trio composed by Delay, Dunbar, and Shakespeare. In January 2019, Vladislav Delay went to Kingston and spent some days at The Anchor studios, to record drums and bass with S&R, some voice takes and a series of atmospheric field recordings. Back to Finland, Delay started to experiment with this precious material, mixing, and overdubbing, in the comfort and quiet of his studio, based on the island of Hailuoto, Baltic Sea, Northern Finland, giving another feeling to the Jamaican trip. This became a tribute to the "dub spirit", but in a very personal way, far beyond any influence or "the obvious". 500-Push-Up is two worlds collapsing, merging, also showing some intriguing approach of the Jamaican groove, used as a filigree, like the echo or the ghost of reggae, converging and conversing with a post-industrial and experimental approach. To file beside experiments -- for instance -- such as Lee Perry's Scientist Rids The World Of The Evil Curse Of The Vampires (1981) or the On U-Sound productions. Somewhere between the old-school electronica culture, the soundscaping, the experimental paths of Lee Perry and Adrian Sherwood, ghostly clubbing anthems, minimalism, pop, jazz, without being influenced, Vladislav Delay is building a drifting and coherent sound enigma. Personnel: Vladislav Delay - electronics, sampling, percussion; Sly Dunbar - drums; Robbie Shakespeare - bass.

COLTRANE, ALICE A Monastic Trio LP
2020 repress. "Born Alice McLeod into a musical Detroit family, Alice Coltrane began playing piano at age seven and later studied with Bud Powell in Paris. Upon returning to the States, she joined vibraphonist Terry Gibbs' group and eventually shared a bill with the John Coltrane Quartet. In 1965 the two wed in Juárez, Mexico, and played alongside one another until her husband's last performance in May, 1967. A Monastic Trio, created in the year following her husband's passing, is Coltrane's first recording as a band leader and features six original compositions. While John's spirit can be felt throughout -- from the song titles ('Ohnedaruth' was his adopted Hindu name) to the personnel (Jimmy Garrison, Rashied Ali, and Pharaoh Sanders were frequent collaborators) -- the album showcases Alice's immense talent for fusing spiritual free-jazz and new-age with classical, Eastern, post-bop and gospel. As the late Amiri Baraka writes, '"I Want to See You" is a monastic piano concerto. With echoes of Europe... it has a solemnity and majesty to it.... Yes, monastic is the word. The piano broods in its earth imagination.'"

YARD, IKE Night After Night 12"
Last copies, RSD 2020 release. "New York no-wavers Ike Yard are perhaps best known for being the first American band signed to Factory Records, and it isn't difficult to hear why: the group's music has much in common with the existential frigidness of Joy Division and early New Order as well as the mutant noise-funk of Section 25 and A Certain Ratio. That said, the sound of Night After Night, the band's debut EP, is one that could only have emerged from the lawless dystopia of '70s New York City. Vocalist/percussionist Stuart Argabright, guitarist Michael Diekmann, vocalist/bassist Kenny Compton and synth player Fred Szymanski traffic in a particularly foreboding rhythmic tension, creating in the process an unlikely amalgam of minimal wave, industrial and post-punk. Recorded shortly after forming in 1980 and originally released on seminal Brussels imprint Les Disques Du Crépuscule, Night After Night suggests an alternate history in which Tobe Hooper and Jah Wobble provided the soundtrack to The Warriors. The atmosphere throughout is thick. Every cymbal is dubbed-out and spacey; every vocal utterance treated, alien and detached. Fans of Chrome's damaged ice machine-guitar or Suicide's menacing, anything-can-happen m.o. will rejoice in the siren-sounds, metal clanging and metronomic death-pulse of 'Sense of Male,' while 'Infra-ton' evokes the cacophonous rattle of gates being pulled down over bodega storefronts and the screech of subway brakes. Side two kicks off with 'Motiv's' mechanical dread, and the squelchy din of 'Cherish' recasts The Residents as streetwise, urban punks. Night After Night remains primal evidence of the dank, uncompromising narcotica of Ike Yard's embryonic period. This first-time reissue comes with original sleeve design. Limited edition translucent red vinyl."

TABBAL TRIO, TANI Now Then CD
"Now Then, by Tani Tabbal Trio, is the vital third release on Tao Forms, and we are honored to present this brand new work from the master drummer-percussionist. Tani Tabbal is known for his extensive performing and recording career with Roscoe Mitchell, Geri Allen, James Carter, David Murray, Sun Ra, and Faruq Z. Bey / Griot Galaxy. Following a series of self-released recordings over the past decade (including two by this trio), Now Then will be his first internationally distributed work as a leader. Tabbal -- who came of age on Detroit's fertile jazz scene -- has always looked for colleagues with fresh ideas, big ears, and adventurous souls. He found them again in veteran bassist Michael Bisio and next generation alto saxophonist Adam Siegel. Now Then is an exceptional album of charismatic communications by three musicians who breathe as one. The compositions -- six by Tabbal, four by Bisio -- define specific materials and moods that the trio develops with patience and a subtle variety of textures and dynamics. Melodic riches abound, wielded with both controlled fire & giving tenderness, while the joy of prolific communication and illuminated creation permeates the album. It's a beauty!"

ROSSALL The Last Glam In Town CD
Remember The Glitter Band? Original songwriter/leader John Rossall is back with his best album ever, abetted by glam-era friends, plus Nightingales and Membranes. Contrary to the old blather, it was The Glitter Band, and glam rock in general, that pointed to possibilities which exploded during punk, not -- let's be honest! -- the dirty beard-wearing post-hippie meanderings of pub rock. GLAM! Those outfits! The endless soaring choruses! Outer space futurism! At its best, it couldn't be topped. Even famed glam fans The Ramones couldn't match the perfect minimalism of The Glitter Band, adding a "ho!" where "hey!" was already perfection. But it's not quite remembered that way. Glam's audacity was gummed up by over-reliance on early rock covers, stingy recording budgets, endless tours eating up writing time, and the showbiz machinations of jealous stars -- damaging enough to prevent The Glitter Band from seeing their records released in America. Despite further hits, the band stumbled when John Rossall left, after their second album, to start a solo career that never quite took off the way his many fans had hoped. A small but niggling rock 'n roll question is, what might have happened had Rossall and group been given the time, budget and freedom to record an album of their own creation? It's been nearly half a century since Rossall left the band he started, but -- unbelievably -- that question has now been answered by the release of the best start-to-finish album by The Glitter Band or any of its alumni. Recorded by Simon "Ding" Archer and mixed by Dave Trumfio, Rossall's The Last Glam In Town is a near-perfect album of soaring tunes, energy and fun, capturing the spirit of The Glitter Band audaciously accurately. Though ably assisted by longtime collaborator Mark Standley, members of his touring band, as well as The Nightingales (whose leader, Robert Lloyd sings two songs), and arch-fan by John Robb of The Membranes (who also sings two), it's John Rossall front-and-center, clearly having the time of his life. Bob Bradbury contributes the mighty "Got My Groove:", and tragically, Alan Merrill of The Arrows, writer of rock standard "I Love Rock And Roll", gifted Rossall a potential hit in "Equalizer", shortly before his death due to COVID-19 complications. 2020 is the perfect year for the joyous rock abandon and soaring optimism of The Last Glam In Town.

HAUFF, HELENA Kern Vol. 5 3LP
Repressed. 3x12" release. Full color gatefold sleeve featuring exclusive photography; includes download code. Switching within digital binaries, analog flux, and all forms of degradation in between, a creature is kickstarted to life, as if awoken with locomotion's full might. Helena Hauff delivers a mix for Tresor's Kern series, lashing together a sound world with a potent barrage of industrial dance music. Scorched-earth missives attract metals and mining chemicals, leaving little in its wake but aggravated and chaotic experiments of lateral hypotheses in acid brine. Like a hyperloop through this labyrinth, this high-velocity future is both beautiful and evil, glinting embers through low-bit fogged-out clusters. 100-meter high aluminum pylons vibrate, each captivated by their electrified foundations. There is no place for dust to settle on the floor. Where a loose TB-tribalism knocks switches and pounds upward synaptic shocks, life down there is too rapid. Not to be taken lying down, this is the viable path forward without the shackles of turgid passivity. The eect is no less thrilling than crucial, as it presents an essential DJ of our times. Settling into swift 150bpm groove, Hauff ploughs through shepherd-tone electro, ghetto bumps, and grizzled techno. A new collaborative track with Morah plays a rough game of meter, with Hauff's signature sound clear as ever ripping apart new dimensions with a brutal disorder over deceptive bass synths. The visceral crunch of the present is no more clear than at the halfway point, a threshold in which the breakneck electro falls apart, with the rabid foam of Nasenbluten's ballsy gabber anthem "Intellectual Killer". Slowly more room to breathe comes into view, the pace drawn down revealing a strange sense of resolution, with expansive synths hinting at a beckoning euphoria. At this moment, Helena Hauff is clearly in full stride, uniquely melding fragile machinations against anarchic human interventions. Helena Hauff and Morah, Umwelt, Machino, Galaxian, and L.F.T. all contribute with five previously unreleased tracks, exclusive to the compilation. Rare titles are also featured, such as the late Curley Schoop's "Mayhem" under the name Esoterik, "City Of Boom" by DJ Godfather & DJ Starski, Nasenbluten's "Intellectual Killer" and "After Dark" produced collaboratively by Andrea Parker and David Morley.3x12" features: Esoterik, Galaxian, Morah & Hauff, DJ Godfather & DJ Starski, Q.D.T., Machino, Umwelt, Shinra Nasenbluten, L.F.T., Dirty Hospital, and Andrea Parker & David Morley.

JOHNSON, CHUCK Balsams LP
2020 repress. Chuck Johnson's pedal steel guitar debut delivers a group of pieces for ambient meditation. Recorded in a single two-week session during late 2015, and subsequently arranged/constructed/treated in the studio in spring of 2016, Balsams is awash in layers of tonal perfection. The album constantly evolves while maintaining a unified approach across both sides. Balsams is a record that lives outside genre and time, one that continues to develop with each successive deep listen. A unique expansion in the VDSQ catalog, Balsams is an album created in the hopes of providing solace and regenerative energies for many years to come.

MAYALL & THE BLUESBREAKERS, JOHN Bluesbreakers with Eric Clapton LP
2020 repress. This seminal British blues album gave Clapton the chance to finally show his chops, not surprisingly, launching Clapton into stardom. Recorded in 1966 during Clapton's short stint with the Bluesbreakers, just after leaving the Yardbirds (the birth place of other legendary guitar players like Jimmy Page and Jeff Beck) and before he joined Cream. Includes 4 bonus tracks.

VELOSO, CAETANO Transa LP
Transa is the fourth album by Brazilian musician Caetano Veloso, released on 1972 by PolyGram. Like its predecessor, it was recorded while the artist was exiled in London, though he returned to Brazil shortly after completing it. Evocative, eclectic, intimate, and rhythmically complex, Transa contains everything that has made Caetano Veloso the most distinctive and, arguably, most important voice in modern Brazilian music. The record was cut in 1972, shortly after Veloso's return from political exile in England. Though the songs are not overtly political, they seem allegorical, celebratory, and plaintive at once, and point to a tension between the artist's expressive impulse and the strictures of his native country. This tension is further heightened by the presence of lyrics in both English and Portuguese. The beautiful, desperate "You Don't Know Me" may be the world's first bilingual bossa nova/folk-punk anthem of identity. The jazzy "Nine Out of Ten" gives way to the gear-shifting "Triste Bahia," which features webs of accelerating Brazilian percussion. A spare treatment of the classic samba "Mora Na Filosofia," the cosmic ditty "Neolithic Man," and the 12-bar "Nostalgia," (ending with the wise line "That's What Rock 'n Roll Is All About") close out the set. Transa is a jewel in Veloso's discography and a must for anyone interested in Brazilian pop -- or brilliant, original pop in general. 180 gram vinyl.

NUCLEUS Live In Europe 1970-71 LP
Hereby the eclectic British jazz-rock band Nucleus -- led by trumpet player and Miles Davis biographer, Ian Carr -- at the absolute peak of its powers in a series of European live performances. They capture the group in arguably its finest incarnation right at the start of its long career, exhibiting a staggeringly high level of musical discipline matched by an equally impressive ability to improvise and solo. Nucleus began its long jazz-rock journey in 1969, they attracted a following after a successful performance at the Montreux International Festival in 1970, which led to the offer of a recording contract with Vertigo, and the release of several acclaimed albums. Ultimately, Elastic Rock (1970) had elements more in common with Brit avant-garde rockers like the Soft Machine and the Pink Floyd than it did with jazz, even if rock remained the less dominant force in the band's overall approach.

PIXIES Pixies LP
Before the indie rock scene was blown wide open by Nirvana in the early '90s, the Pixies loomed large on college radio. By taking standard pop formats and turning them inside out -- the band spelled out the new commandments of alternarock to a new generation of would-be grunge rockers. In March 1987, as the Pixies were just beginning to gain a reputation around the Boston area, they recorded their first demo, known by Pixies fans as The Purple Tape. This demo landed the Pixies their first record deal with 4AD, and the eight songs that appear on their first album Come On Pilgrim (1987) were culled from this same demo. However, there were nine more songs that didn't make the cut, and these are the songs that are found here. That original raw 1987 demo comes early versions of "Here Comes Your Man", "Down The Well", and "Build High", as well as the hidden gem "Rock A My Soul". Orange color vinyl.

JOY DIVISION Love Will Tear Us Apart LP
2020 repress. Love Will Tear Us Apart should have been the band's most shining moment, instead it became their tragic swan song. Released just a month after frontman Ian Curtis' heart wrenching suicide, the song came to be seen as the unheeded warning of the impending tragedy. This special edition features all three versions of the song that transformed Joy Division from mere band into legend. In addition to the original single version, we have two versions remixed by American producers Don Gehman of John Mellencamp fame (the 'radio version') and Arthur Baker (who also produced a hit single for Africa Bambaataa around this same time). The remaining tracks include "These Days" (which appeared on the original "Love Will Tear Us Apart" single), along with "Transmission" (their debut single released in 1979) and "Atmosphere" (originally released as a France-only single) in 1980.

GROSSI BLEND ORCHESTRA, ANDREA Four Winds CD
Andrea Grossi on Four Winds: "Winds (and mythology) have been a pretext for me: characters to take inspiration from, as to define specific musical identities during the composition process. The keystones of this work, which took me almost two years to complete (November 2015-June 2017), are the pieces that bear the names of the four ancient Greek winds: Borea (North), Noto (South), Euro (East), Zephiro (West). This imagery can't obviously ignore the perspective of the 'migrating wind' as an entity in movement, that blends and transforms itself, renovating traditions, identities and cultures, overcoming walls and barriers of all kinds. This music is meant to be a hymn: a eulogy to the differences that nourish and enrich our world. At the same time, with its harshness, it aims to stimulate a reflection about the terrible fate accompanying those who are forced to give up their lives in favor of a greater hope; an aspiration that, very often, remains unfulfilled."

PARRIS Terrapin EP 12"
Long-time friend of the label Parris debuts on Wisdom Teeth with a unique set of step-y house mutations, including a collaboration with AD93 star, Minor Science. The record begins in downtempo mode. "Soft Rocks With Socks" rolls out majestically on a slo-mo drum break and a two-tone bass loop, with shimmering pads and bleeping melodies counterbalancing a deceptively punishing low end. "Terrapin" -- a link-up with Minor Science -- is a pristinely produced 100bpm stepper, featuring razor sharp drum synths and crystalline MIDI melodies. To close, "Sabor a Ceniza" pushes the tempo up towards peak time. What begins as a broken rhythm settles into a 4x4 groove, finding the exact midpoint between Roska's UK funky and Margaret Dygas's work on Perlon.

SOOM T The Arch LP
Double LP version. Soom T, a Scottish singer of Indian origin, grew up in a poor district of Glasgow. For her, music is an escape, and her brother made her discover activist music, in particular Rage Against The Machine, Public Enemy, or Cypress Hill. After having campaigned alongside Y Network, a political group of young representatives from Glasgow neighborhoods aiming for change, Soom T decided to devote herself to music to denounce injustices and tell her daily struggles through militant and impactful lyrics. She first joined a hip-hop group, released a couple of bhangra songs (Indian popular music) and then discovered sound systems and reggae culture thanks to different crews and producers, including Bus in Germany, Alex Paterson of cult electronic music group The Orb in the UK, and later on Glasgow-based sound system Mungo's Hi-Fi. If rap remains her favorite mode of expression, Soom T lets herself be seduced by the reggae-dub scene in which she feels free. Her first performances in France are done alongside DJ Kunta with whom she will share, over the years, a common vision of music. She was quickly spotted by the public, notably thanks to her generous music and her incisive and inimitable flow. Soom T handles words with incredible ease and has always advocated sincerity in his words. She then became an essential artist in the underground reggae scene. After fifteen years of activity and almost a hundred titles to her credit, she finally released her first solo album Free As a Bird in 2015 on Wagram Music which shows the full extent of her talent and her musical spectrum. Followed by Ode To A Karrot (Khanti Records) in 2016 then Born Again in 2018 (Strong Foundation). For the recording of her new album, Soom T naturally turns to her friend DJ Kunta who will produce all the songs. Composed and recorded with the Lyon-based band Highly Seen, this new album entitled The Arch catches the essence of the music of the one we now call "the princess of raggamuffin". The musicians, mostly multi-instrumentalists, use modern, but also vintage techniques, giving their instrumental authentic flavors. Soom T, as usual, manages to deliver highly committed lyrics while retaining a certain lightness to it.

VA Bootboy Discotheque: 14 Bovver Rock Bruisers 1969-1979 LP
If you went down the wrong alleyway, took a shortcut through the park or crossed the wrong open space after dark in the UK in the 1970s, you stood a fair chance of being accosted by someone with a big mouth, low morals, and some gurning mates to impress, usually reeking of fags and cheap booze and always ready to put the boot in. And, before you could say, "sickening violence", a short but chaotic scuffle would ensue and a winner eventually emerge, battle scarred and bruised. The boot boy was the worst kind of hooligan. There wasn't anything you could do or say to appease him. You had the same chance as a fly caught up in a spider's web. Zero. Your best bet was to run. His intent was always to give you, and vicariously the rest of the world, a good kicking. Thugs, long-haired louts, short-haired louts; the anti-hippy. Birds, booze, bovver, and football on their criminal minds. So, fasten your braces for a white knuckle-duster ride. 14 bovver rock bruisers for all of you peace-loving losers. Somebody's going to get their head kicked in tonight... Put the boot in. Features Bill Case, 32nd Turn Off, Boots, Leather Head, Big T, Phil Canning, Things Fall Apart, Redhead, Giggles, Westland Steamboat, Brother Susan, Scruff, ? r ², and The Knuckle Dusters.
