NEWS
THE BRAIN DEBUTS!
Welcome to the first issue of The Brain. With any luck we'll be able to keep this fresh and interesting for people to pay regular visits to the place. Please let us know what you think.

BEDHEAD SPLITS
Austin-based band Bedhead called it quits this week. Brainwashed will still continue to host the website for this band, and their material should still remain in print. Sucks if you couldn't see them live, they were great. - Jon Whitney

SITE
STARS ON BRAINWASHED
Brainwashed is happy to announce the arrival of Stars of the Lid to Brainwashed. These guys have a new disc due out on Kranky next month, details on those sites.

HAPPY HAPPY HAPPY
Happy Go Lucky is a hip label out of Ohio, new to the Brainwashed family. They've been around for a few years but have a growing catalogue of wonderful singles and a couple full-lengthers.

PRE-MILLENNIAL TENSION
Check out the Pre-Millennial Single at the Legendary Pink Dots website. This EP should be out later this month, but you can enjoy various tastes from it already.

ACTUAL SOUNDS
The new full-length disc from Meat Beat Manifesto, "Actual Sounds and Voices" should hit the stores in September, but like the LPDs, you can also hear some exclusive tracks in MP3 format here on the only official MBM website.

DA BOMB
Also new to brainwashed is the ever growing mini-site for music collective Bomb the Bass. Tim Simenon, the ringleader of this group, has been responsible for production of many artists in the past including Depeche Mode, Neneh Cherry, Gavin Friday, Sinead O'Connor, Seal, Curve and many many more

THE BRIDE
Amanda Palmer has been given an honorary brainwashed website for all her hard work and devotion to making this world a more interesting place. She will be performing as the bride off and on in and around Cambridge, MA until she returns to Europe. More details due later.

MUSIC
IN BRIEF

BOARDS OF CANADA
Canadians can be quite boring, but this group is neither Canadian nor boring. This wonderful debut, "Music Has the Right To Children" is currently out on Warp in the UK but will make it to the US via Matador in September. A rhythmic low-cool wonderful gem, ideal for driving, working, making dinner, or downloading porn. - Jon Whitney

LOW AND LOWER
2 releases are out from Low recently. The first is a mail-order only CD of a live concert from Louisville KY, "One More Reason to Forget", the second being a disc of remixes, "owL remix Low". The live disc is a wonderful document, recorded in a church with the microphone in the back of the hall. The ambience is wonderful, the sound is natural, and the sirens outside fit in almost perfectly. Order one while you can by emailing drekka7@hotmail.com. "Owl" smells like contractual obligation. This album, released through Vernon Yard has some really odd, interesting, nauseating, and pointless tracks. Two remixes of Over the Ocean are completely unnecessary but I enjoyed the Porter Ricks remix of Down and the three Neotropic mixes on it. - Jon Whitney

HELLO TASTY
What a great album. After offering meager punk offerings and a live EP over the last 4 years the brothers Cool (Mike D, MCA, and King Ad-Rock) have returned to offer up 22 tracks of pure coolness. "Super Disco Breakin'" starts out the disc with the bombastic (and not to mention catchy) groove the Beasties are always guaranteed to throw at a listener after putting on an album. This time up though there are no punk interludes and very few instrumental tracks. The Invisible Scratch Piklz's Mixmaster Mike DJs on a few tracks and offers his hop-hop flair while guests such as Lee "Scratch" Perry and Cibbo Matto's Miho Hatori add their own touch. The best thing to come out of these guy's pockets since Paul's Boutique. - Carter Adams

AFTER AFTER THE FLOOD
After the Flood 2 is out on AE and comes as a two-disc set. The first disc contains lots of wishy-washy vocals from Gordon Sharp while the second disc, an instrumental disc features some great contributions from Windy & Carl and Labradford. If you can find it for a reasonable price, pick it up for the second disc alone. - Jon Whitney

LIZ PHAIR
Just bought it this week, and, well, it's sad to see her go the way of PJ Harvey. The loss of the DIY ethics, present on her first two albums is evident as this album is rather bland, lifeless, and without the drive, energy, or lust of the prior releases. A few good tunes to keep your toe tapping, but not enough to warrent the sticker price. - Jon Whitney

As always, check out the latest update of NEW RELEASES brought to you by Greg and Feedback Monitor.

MOVIES
REVIEWED

THE SPANISH PRISONER
If you haven't seen this film yet, then you're in the company of billions of people in the world who are missing one of the best movies of the year. It's not about Spain or prisoners, but a complicated story of lies, deceit, corporations, and government. In a similar respect to the Usual Suspects, if you blink, you may have missed something vitally important. Don't miss this one. - Jon Whitney

KISS OR KILL
Bonny and Clyde or maybe Love and a .45 brought to US viewers with an Australian twist. The film tells the story of two Australian 20-somethings who involve themselves in a world of crime by enticing with sex, drugging, and then robbing, married businessmen who run into trouble when one of their victims dies and all that is left is a videotape of an Australian football star having sex with adolescent boys. The film is done in a somewhat cut-up style with many different camera angles and cuts of the same scene and is definitely not done with mainstream audiences in mind. If you ever are wandering through Blockbuster without a clue on what to get, pick this up. - Carter Adams

THERE'S SOMETHING ABOUT MARY
This is stupid funny, you'll be laughing throughout the entire thing, but the downfall of most Ben Stiller films is the ever-present corporate sponsors popping up in refrigerators and counter-tops, MTV, and the fact that this is a pure fairy tale. People don't exist like this in real life. - Jon Whitney

THE OPPOSITE OF SEX
A warm, heart-touching comedy starring the ever cute, yet breastfully developing Christina Ricci as a ho, Lisa Kudrow as an old teacher who ain't getting any, and Lyle Lovett as a freak. It's quite enjoyable, actually and you do develop a mild fondness for all the sick characters. - Jon Whitney

p
(Pi) is a schizophrenic romp through mathematics. Filmed in Black and White, it comes off like an episode of the X-Files by the director of Tetsuo: The Iron Man. A Mathematics genius comes close to unravelling the secrets of the Koran when trying to prove a formula for the way the stock market works. High-strung espionage government cover-ups, Jewish fanatical motor-mouths, ants, sexy neighbors and lots of wires stand in the way of the truth. - Thomas Guttadauro
