MUSIC IN BRIEF |
RYOJI IKEDA Japanese minimalist, Ryoji Ikeda brings us two new releases. The first is "Time and Space" from Staalplaat in the Netherlands. This release is a 2x3" cd set. Time, the first CD is 5 tracks in ascending order of time - track 1 is 1:11, 2 is 2:22, etc... The music picks up from where the phenomenal + / - left off, sonically challenging, piercing, and psychologically disturbing. Time plays on Time whereas at points the pulse moves at the same time on the CD clock seconds tick. Space, the second CD is one lengthy track of more beautiful noise, but taking a step into more musically diverse realms of consciousness. It provides a great bridging gap between + / - and his follow-up full length release, 0ºC on Touch. 0ºC is a full-lengther with two main movements: C, ten connected tracks recorded 1997-8 and 0º, three connected tracks from 1988. Piercing and prodding, this is much more varied than previous releases. The noises and blips are most strategically placed, edited and flowing. Orchestral samples and loops are cut up nicely and are sonically inspirational. Get this guy together with Panasonic and you've got a match! - Jon Whitney

MOVIES REVIEWED |
THE COLOR OF NIGHT The problem with having cable is that you end up watching shit when you are too lazy to go anywhere or do anything respectable. Thus is the case of this past Tuesday night. The Color of Night has got to be one of the worst movies of the 90s. Starring Bruce Willis and featuring Scott Bakula and Eriq LaSalle in minor roles, this film is full of stupid people and the worst cliches. The pointless fuck scenes and the proverbial moronic plot unraveling when people realize how stupid they all are. Of course, it takes place in LA like everything from Hollywood. Eriq LaSalle - stick to television, don't go down the road of Clooney making terrible movie bombs... - Jon Whitney

FEEDBACK |
A QUESTION OF CASH Subject: A question about shipping I'm a little confused about the shipping cost for the 7". You say that in the US, the shipping cost for a single 7" would be $3.20, but that the shipping to the rest of North America would only be $2.00. This doesn't seem right. I would think that it would be cheaper to mail within the US, then to foreign locations. I know it's only a $1.20, but still, that takes the price of the 2 song 7" up to $9.20 which seems a little steep. If I'm reading this wrong, or if there is a reason for this, please let me know. Good luck with the new project. Everything in the USA gets shipped Priority Mail - one rate up to 2 pounds. Outside of the country, the shipping will take longer and is measured by weight. If anybody wants the cheapes US domestic rate possible Subject: Hiya I'm writing to ask about the song sample "His body was a playground for the Nazi elite" which refs "predator_prey.mp3" in the NON directory. It doesn't appear to be there, or indeed in the Coil directory either. I'm aware the sound files need to be re-done for Non. There's a lot of work that needs to be done on that website. |

DISCOUNT CELEBRITY OF THE WEEK |
NIPSEY RUSSELL He was a favorite on TV shows of the seventies like The Match Game, $20,000 Pryamid, The Hollywood Squares and $weepstake$. A sparce career, however since his role as the Tin Man in 1978's "The Wiz" has put Nipsey on the Discount Celebrity Circuit. On a recent Conan O'Brien show, Nipsey quotes, 'Roses are Red, Violets are Blue. The real Nipsey Russell says, "Conan Screw You!"'
