MUSIC IN BRIEF |
KILN, "HOLO" Kiln create epic widescreen pictures for your stereo. The three members of Kiln (who have in the past operated under the guises of Fibreforms, Waterwheel, or Owl Eye) stitch together a world of standard rock trio line-up, heady atmospherics, and a wise use of noise, echo, and space. Tribal beats propel ancient drum machines riding on their backs, static and bubbling synths float around the room, and a repetitive guitar riff is plucked somewhere off on the horizon. This, and more, is the 3d soundworld Kiln conjure up on "Holo". "Kekker" bears quite a lot of resemblance to latter-day Bark Psychosis, but doesn't imitate them outright. Instead, it takes their shuffling, jazzy drum/bass/guitar interplay and turns it into a laid-back swagger. And on "Squarewave Colorwheel", a subtle motorik pulse provides the timekeeping for layers and layers of crunchy static and dusty oscillators, painting a picture of a rusted future-primitive Can. I haven't heard an album so completely immersive, so utterly beautiful, in quite a while. Released a few months ago, "Holo" has received little press and attention, possibly due to Kiln's reluctance towards media interaction. Next time your room feels a little too empty, pick up this Cd and let the sound fill every void. - Jason Olariu

CONCERT REPORT |
4/27, godspeed you black emperor! Finally after over a year of listening to this phenomenal band, I get to see them live. In London no-less (they live 4 hours from Boston and have yet to play there...). It was louder and heavier and harder than their records, there was a lack of the tape-loop stuff and experimentation, but it was no less phenomenal. I hope they come back for a full-on US tour again soon... - Jon Whitney

MOVIES REVIEWED |
SNAKE EYES Make sure you pay attention when you watch this one, I didn't have a problem but I know there are many people out there who have a short attention span. The story follows Nick Santorro (Nicholas Cage) at a big boxing match. It's so big there happens to be some big time senator there. After a very delightful and entertaining opening sequence, the fight begins, towards the end of the first round and a few out of place fans in the arena, shots are heard, chaos begins. Nick teams up with buddy, Gary Sinise, to find out who the bad guy is. Nick then realizes, there may have been a conspiracy, it seems a few people there were all in on it, or were there more? You better watch it to find out. Directed by Brian DePalma, who also did such classics as Scarface and Carlitos Way brings you another on the edge of your seat thriller. - John "Star Traveler" Beck

FEEDBACK |
kranky kumquats! Subject: Did something happen to that kranky.com site? Fear not, I know it's a muffin company and all that, but I checked it again today just for kicks and got an empty page and the header 'Welcome to the finest Organizations on the Net!' -- *shrug* Might that mean the domain name is up for grabs again, assuming this wasn't a temporary shutdown? Oh, if this is gone for good, we're gonna go after it! Yeeeha... Although the muffin munching indie rockers might have some sad moments, this will soon come to pass. Fear not, if we get kranky.com - we'll be sure to have a section for our finest recipes! Subject: Simply the best
Hello, Did you want something? I'm waiting for a request for a band to get signed or someone wanting me to service them with promos! |

DISCOUNT CELEBRITY OF THE WEEK |
JUDGE REINHOLD Was it Running Scared or Fast Times at Ridgemont High which gave Mr. Reinhold his biggest break? Either way, after the most recent Beverly Hills Cop sequel, Judge appeared in tiny roles in various box office bo mbs. Never a starring role for this guy, sadly enough. Now appearing in car adverstisements on TV, somebody needs to give him first billing on the silver screen...
