MUSIC IN BRIEF |
SWANS, "COP/YOUNG GOD + GREED/HOLY MONEY" This 2CD set is a re-issue of four (yes, count'em 4) records comprising the Swans' very early material from 1984-1986. The early material by the Swans is really quite different from everything they've released since. Their earliest music, Filth, was even harsher, and I believe that this gradual shift away from art-punk to Darkwave is in a large part due to Jarboe's influence (her first recordings with the Swans are on this release). But this material has very thrashy metal overtones with dirgey rhythms and a lot of shouting, and can sometimes induce a very disturbing trance. With lots of heavily distorted electric guitar, and very loud percussion slamming together in unison at about 30 beats per minute for the entire piece, it can be pretty intense, but not necessarily uplifting. Yes, this is a very hard-edged side of the Swans, and I know many people who only like the music that came after this period. Speaking as someone who doesn't normally like metal, and yet did quite enjoy the music featured here, I must say this is probably the most amazing hard rock that there ever was. On this, sometimes you get the feeling that they're just yelling out random stuff and slamming on their instruments in random but rhythmic ways, but the sounds are pretty cool, and so are the words. It grows on you. And these 4 releases go together very well in a 2CD set. - Alan Ezust

CONCERT REPORT |
TOM ZÉ w/MEMBERS OF TORTOISE Tuesday night was a great night. I don't know who thought to join these two entities (Tom Zé - an established Brazilian singer with a recording career spanning a couple decades with Tortoise - a few punks from Chicago who play easy jazz/dub/instrumental/experimental stuff for the indie rock fans) but somehow it worked. And it worked beautifully. The rhythms were wonderful, the energy was high, and the singing in Portuguese. Tom would stop and talk to the audience between songs, plug the albums, try his hand at English and kept people dancing and moving. With any luck, perhaps the snooty arty David Byrne worshipping jazz community might finally recognize Tortoise and the indie rock twentysomethings might finally recognize something not from Chicago. Unfortunately this tour is rather short and hitting only some of the bigger cities. Tour dates available on the Tortoise site. - Jon Whitney

...and so the concert ends 12:09 at The Middle East in Central Square, Cambridge. I jump in the car and fly like mad to the 12:30 showing of The Phantom Menace in Randolph, MA (typically a 40 minute drive). I made it in time to catch the Austin Powers preview and hook up with my friends! I won't admit how fast I was going down the highway due to incriminating factors, but The Force was with me...

FILMS REVIEWED |
STAR WARS: THE PHANTOM MENACE It has become almost too easy to diss a movie or another phenomenon that has gotten so big, it is now out of hand. If you have looked around, none of the critics are giving this movie a great review. I thought it was enjoyable and perhaps since I was expecting much worse I'm giving it a good recommendation. There are annoying cuteness factors like Jar Jar Binks (who could have been completely left out), the droids (who have too much personality for a fighter robot), and the computer graphics which seem dimensionless and surreal as opposed to the believable low-tech props used in the earlier films. The sabre battle between the two Jedis and the Sith Lord, Darth Maul is awesome, but entirely too short. Impressive actors with renowned careers like Terrence Stamp or Samuel L. Jackson are bit roles and entirely underused. When the critics complained about stale acting and the thin plot, you have to ask how were the plots in the other films, the acting wasn't top notch either. You don't go to Star Wars to see oscar-caliber performances or a winning screenplay. I enjoyed the queen, young Anakin Skywalker, and the rest of the cast. The language could have been a little drier, however, there were too many 20th century colloquialisms - tons more than the other films. Overall it was enjoyable and fun to watch. - Jon Whitney

DISCOUNT CELEBRITY OF THE WEEK |
CINDY WILLIAMS A fine actress indeed, popping up in commercials for Jenny Craig, TWA, and Pampers as well as appearing in numerous made for TV movies in the years since her role as Shirley on Laverne & Shirley. Unfortunately her presence hasn't graced a big screen in any substantial roles for quite a number of years. (The First Nudie Musical seems to be the only semi-main character and that came out in 1976.)
