WILLIAMS, HANK Hey Good Lookin': The Hits Collection 1947-55 LP
"Hank Williams was one of the single most important and influential artists in the history of country music, providing a template for which a host of country stars successfully followed during the decades after his tragically premature death in 1953 at the age of 29. He was a recording artist for just six years, yet he had around thirty-five country chart hits, including eleven No. 1s. His songs have been recorded by, and provided hits for, dozens of artists across just about every genre over the years. This 16-track collection features all Hanks chart toppers alongside the majority of his 2nd place finishes and provides a great snapshot of country music's biggest icon. It is not only a showcase for his unique talent but an insight into a song writing and performing style which was central to the development of country music. Included in this collection are the massive chart toppers 'Lovesick Blues,' 'Long Gone Lonesome Blues,' 'Why Don't You Love Me,' 'Moanin' The Blues,' 'Cold,' 'Cold Heart,' 'Hey Good Lookin',' 'Jambalaya,' 'I'll Never Get Out Of This World Alive,' 'Kaw Liga,' 'Your Cheating Heart,' and 'Take These Chains From My Heart.' With broken marriage, alcohol dependence and drug addiction featuring heavily in his life, he skillfully captured these personal demons in his song writing and performance creating the template for country acts to follow paving the way for others to articulate their own intimate feelings."

WOLLNY & JOACHIM KUHN, MICHAEL Duo CD
"Michael Wollny and Joachim K?hn are distinct and fundamentally different as musicians. And that is precisely the thing from which a significant part of their sense of common purpose stems. Both are outstandingly virtuosic pianists without stylistic restrictions; the most divergent areas of contemporary music can be the place where they find their connection. Each has an ever-alert and enormously creative mind, plus the virtue of being able to listen, and also the confidence to do the right thing at the right moment, and to not just take their duo partner by surprise, but also, sometimes, themselves too. The duo work began in October 2008 with the recording of the album Piano Works IX: Live At Schloss Elm au. Now almost 15 years later, the two pianists have come together again for a recording. What is to be heard on this album? It documents the concert which took place in the Alte Oper Frankfurt on 23 January 2023, in its essential phases. No tricks, no patching, and the only variance from the actual concert is one change to the running order. The editing out of applause did not present any problems, because this audience -- devoted, completely captivated, and highly respectful -- invariably left a second or two at the end of numbers while the final echo in the room died down. There was a particular intensity at this concert. And one can feel that. The two improvising pianists who are to be heard on the album have wordless ways of communicating and intuitive ways of finding consensus, whether they are dealing with fundamental things or huge amounts of detail. And there is no sense of them tiptoeing tentatively around each other -- they got through the phase of getting to know each other and feeling each other out for the first time long ago."

VA Flux Gourmet: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack 2LP
"In Peter Strickland's Flux Gourmet, a dysfunctional group of performance artists undertake a month-long residency at an institute devoted to culinary disciplines. Food is interrogated for its sonic potential as the group mic-up, amplify, distort and transform what they cook in front of an audience. The noise that the characters in the film itself make is driven by food blenders, overflowing cauldrons of gurgling soup and sizzling frying pans (courtesy of The Sonic Catering Band), yet the music that soundtracks the culinary capers is engorged with aching melodies and wordless, airy vocals. Contributors include Cavern Of Anti-Matter, Jeremy Barnes and Heather Trost of A Hawk And A Hacksaw and Trost's band, Roj (formerly of Broadcast), and Nurse With Wound. Flux Gourmet is presented in a lush double LP package with an ornate, colorful design and Strickland's detailed liner notes. Image, color, light and sound are integrated and heightened to delirious levels of hyperreality, much like Strickland's past works, Berberian Sound Studio and In Fabric. Flux Gourmet very much alludes to his past as a member of The Sonic Catering Band, which he founded back in 1996. The band split on several occasions and got back together to create new pieces for the soundtrack, concocting strange sonic morsels and treating recipes as if they were scores. The lines between what is on the screen and what is on the soundtrack are blurred, with the band (mostly) using the exact same equipment (which they loaned to the production) and recipes as in the film. However, for all the conceptual rigor on display, the music on the Flux Gourmet is ultimately in pursuit of catharsis, as one character concedes. The power of music and/or noise to purge and cleanse its makers (and hopefully, listeners) of their ills and woes."

EJE EJE That Rainy Dawn/Coral Sex 7"
Batov Records' Middle Eastern Grooves 45s series welcomes the latest addition to its eclectic roster -- a two-track EP from Eje Eje, the psych and funk inspired project from ?atellites band leader and producer, Itamar Kluger. Featuring the tracks "That Rainy Down" and "Coral Sex," the EP showcases Eje Eje's unique blend of Middle Eastern melodies, soulful grooves, and psychedelic sounds. On the A-side "That Rainy Down," The electro baglama player takes the lead, building and building as if, "he is pushing himself to his limit", says Itamar, "seeking catharsis as he walks to the edge of the cliff with confidence", whilst a baladi rhythm plays like an immense march of drummers. On the B-side is the funkier "Coral Sex", which according to Itamar tells a story of a drunk tramp bothering the refined and self-important occupants of an exclusive hotel lobby. Reflecting this friction, the track juxtaposes a silky and sophisticated R&B sound, with loosely, or even drunkenly, played take on rebetiko, a traditional Greek music associated with the poorest of city dwellers, played on a long-necked Greek lute known as a bouzouki. As each track develops, new layers are revealed, inviting the listener to delve deeper. The effect is intentional. As Itamar says, "there is this kind of music that hooks you in a different way every time you hear it, different places in the songs lighting up in different colors, like slowly revealed layers. In our (Eje Eje) case, it is just such a hazed blend. It could make a very specific atmosphere, color a very specific movie scene that is lost in time or yet to be directed, or a very specific moment with your headphones on a long bus to the desert." Itamar Kluger is best known for his work with the Satellites, a six-piece band whose blend of Turkish folk and psych with funk and disco won them champions and listeners across the globe, from KEXP in Seattle to BBC Radio 6 Music, and FIP in France. Eje Eje's first 45 promises to be at least as quirky and original, if not more so, since the project is even more unshackled from traditional concepts of a band.

MORRICONE, ENNIO Che C'entriamo Noi Con La rivoluzione? CD
Beat Records presents this reissue on CD of a classic OST by Ennio Morricone for the Western comedy film Che c'entriamo noi con la revolution? (aka What Am I Doing in the Middle of a Revolution?), directed in 1972 by Sergio Corbucci and starring Vittorio Gassman, Paolo Villaggio, Riccardo Garrone, Leo Anch?riz, Sim?n Arriaga, Jos? Canalejas, Eduardo Fajardo, and Carmen Pericolo. Taken directly from the mono and stereo tapes of the recording sessions, this CD contains everything that was recorded at the time for a total length of 55:40. This OST is represented by the main theme "Che c'entriamo noi?" for orchestra and choir, stylistically situated somewhere between country and religious music, which is reprised in the OST and alternated with versions of "Rivoluzione??" including whistles, guitar and harpsichord, banjo and piano, and flute. This OST also contains various comedic themes with whimsical vocal effects in "Tarantella prima" and "Tarantella seconda," a light-hearted motif for trumpet for the priest Don Albino, then reprised with the whistle march written for the character of Guido Guidi. The return to the market of this enjoyable OST by Ennio Morricone will allow new generations of fans to include it in their collections dedicated to quality film music. Mastering and liner notes by Claudio Fuiano, graphic layout by Daniele De Gemini.

MORRICONE, ENNIO La donna invisibile CD
Beat Records presents a reissue of classic OST by Ennio Morricone for the drama movie La donna invisibile aka ("The invisible woman") directed in 1969 by Paolo Spinola and starring Giovanna Ralli, Silvano Tranquilli, Carla Gravina, Anita Sanders, Gizi Rizzi, Franca Sciutto, Gino Cassani, Ra?l Martinez, Elena Persiani. Ennio Morricone has composed an excellent lounge-type orchestral soundtrack for La donna invisibile. "La donna invisibile" main theme is introduced in the opening credits with prominent oboe, a romantic atmosphere with an epic and melancholy flavor, more airy and cheerful in the second part with Latin American rhythms, then sad again in the coda and lyrical. "Ritratto d'autore" is the best-known song among the fans as it is present on numerous compilations: a romantic motif with a bossa nova tempo and extremely elegant. Edda Dell'Orso appears on "In un sogno il sogno." "Mille ricordi" a very evocative piece that develops for strings only between crescendo and decrescendo with pauses in between. Ennio Morricone has composed three danceable shakes that accompany the protagonist's social life often at parties full of people, food and drink, but which do not fill her life as an invisible woman in the eyes of her husband. For this CD, the stereo master tapes of the original 1969 session were used. Another masterpiece by Ennio Morricone which is back on the market to the delight of those who did not own this compact disc and which adds to the musician's already gigantic discography. Mastering and liner notes by Claudio Fuiano, graphic layout by Daniele De Gemini.

MORRICONE, ENNIO La trappola scatta a Beirut - Il successo CD
La trappola scatta a Beirut (aka Agent 505 Todesfalle Beirut) is a spy movie directed in 1966 by Manfred R. Kohler, with a screenplay by Manfred R. Kohler and Mario Siciliano, photography by Knut Seedorf and Rolf K?stel, editing by Waltraut Lindenau and Manfred R. Kohler, and music by Ennio Morricone. With La trappola scatta a Beirut, Ennio Morricone entered the world of Eurospy with a great American-flavored jazz-swing score in which the composer completely eliminates the strings, leaving room for brass and rhythm section in the cues "La trappola scatta a Beirut (Titoli)," "Inseguimento," and "Missione pericolosa," and incorporating the organ to create atmospheres that evoke mystery and science fiction. There is no shortage of lounge moments either, such as the relaxing "Relax per un agente segreto," "Baci dopo le pallottole," "Languidamente," "Tramonto su Beirut," and the danceable "In piscina." Pure dynamite for all fans of the genre! Il successo is a comedy film directed in 1963 by Mauro Morassi, again with music by Ennio Morricone. For Il successo, Ennio Morricone wrote a jazzy OST with explosive winds and rhythms in "Il successo (Titoli)" and "Il successo (Finale)," featuring Nunzio Rotondo's trumpet. The life of the protagonist, a man who wants to reach the peak of professional success at any cost, is underlined by various themes that characterize his lifestyle, between parties and the desperate desire to reach enormous patrimonial wealth, as heard in "Con eleganza," "Il successo (Twist)," and "Allegra Sambina." The Maestro also composed a nostalgic theme for flute and small ensemble entitled "Per Vittorio," which is also reprised in the Latin version "Per Vittorio (Bossa)." This CD was taken from the mono master tapes of the original sessions (whose first edition was assembled by this writer under the supervision of Maestro Morricone himself), presents a good opportunity for all those who are only now discovering the greatness of Ennio Morricone to include it in their collections.

MODERAT Moderat LP
2024 repress. Gatefold LP version. This is the highly-anticipated debut full-length release by Moderat, the collaborative conjoining of Modeselektor and Apparat. A twist of fate at the Stadtbad Mitte (Berlin-Mitte City Pool) united them in the spring of 2008, and Moderat was reformed. Recorded at the legendary Berlin Hansa Studios (where David Bowie recorded Heroes) in analog with the help of the studio's vintage tube technology and an old EMI console from 1972, restored especially for Moderat. Moderat's self-titled debut makes it sound like these fellas have been working closely together for years -- and the analog production gives these tracks a steady, glowing warmth that pulses and breathes organically. Totally seductive, dark dance tunes that possess an almost tribal disposition for the most intense peak moments. This is a massive debut that unites two of techno's most celebrated acts.

TOGASHI/ISAO SUZUKI, MASAHIKO A Day Of The Sun LP
A Day Of The Sun is a spiritual jazz masterpiece full of poetry by two geniuses of the Japanese musical scene. Masahiko Togashi and Isao Suzuki are both pivotal figures in jazz with unique talents and sensitivities that transcends conventional jazz forms and styles. In addition to being skilled performers, they demonstrate extraordinary compositional talent that transcends their sensibilities and wisdom of more conventional jazz. Together, they provide a wonderful combination of techniques, but without the eyes and ears of these two artists, the mutual understanding, friendship and cooperation that only certain artists are able to recreate together, would never have given rise to this music. The album consists of Togashi's drums/percussion and Suzuki's bass, with occasional cello and piano/synths, all skillfully performed by just the two of them, creating a unique worldview. A performance that far exceeds expectations. The mystical melodies of the East, earthy percussion, and the sensibilities of the two intertwine to create a unique groove, resulting in a universal masterpiece that will never fade away and connects with today's sound makers and DJs. Top sound quality from original master tapes. Includes four-sided insert with a very interesting interview at the time with the two musicians regarding the record.

INOMATA & SOUND LIMITED, TAKESI Innocent Canon LP
Innocent Canon is one of the hopelessly obscure Japanese underground albums that few people know about. It is a kind of unreleased delirious groovadelic soundtrack played by an acid-soaked Japanese big band with powerful drumming, heavy jazz fumes, and delirious organ/guitar lines and luminary narration. Takesi Inomata was a well-known jazz musician at the time, but like many of his contemporaries, he went off the deep end with psychedelic music between 1970-1972. Upon the release of the record in 1970 there was a great debate among Japanese journalists who tried to catalog a genre to the record. The attempt was in vain. They couldn't figure out what it was. Rock? Jazz? They had to accept that you couldn't always label everything. Takesi Inomata & Sound Limited produce music that has nothing to do with stereotypical genres; they play to bring to life an expression of modern sensibility. The title of the album, Innocent Canon, is particularly intriguing to analyze in relation to this concept of the fluidity of music. The same can be said of Kano Tenmei, a talented photographer and DJ, who participated in the sessions with the role of a narrator who improvises aloud, and it doesn't matter if you don't understand everything he says; what matters is being able to fit into this complex emotional quest. Sound Limited consists of ten members, but this number varies often; Inomata always leaves the door open to anyone who wants to join the band founded on a very loose philosophy. The recording process took only 24 hours. Inomata eventually declared, "we managed to create something exciting and interesting (in such a short time)." The album opens with an acidic "Introduction," played with organ, guitar, bass and drums. It is followed by "Funeral," a flute-dominated track over an organ carpet; it is dedicated to Janis Joplin. In a triumph of brass riffs, guitar, sax and drums solos, Kano Tenmei screams "No, No..." in "Rebellion"; a psychedelic funk shake over seven minutes long. "Toy" is reminiscent of samba, with prominent horns and an electric piano solo. "Melancholy" follows a sick guitar riff over a cha-cha rhythm, with piccolo, sax, and organ solos. This is followed by the long "Lonesome" introduced by sitar. The beginning and end of the song are breathtaking, as is the schizophrenic middle section. Closing is the short "Return," a folk ballad with acoustic guitar, whistles, piano and recorders. It is fair to say that this improvisational session produced outstanding results.

RESIDENTS, THE Our Finest Flowers LP
"Black vinyl. The classic 1992 20th Anniversary album, which saw The Residents rework lyrics, melodies and themes from their entire back catalog into an album of new tracks, on vinyl for the first time. Includes an insightful new essay by Jim Knipfel. Celebrating twenty long dreary years of obscure stardom. In 1992, The Residents pondered their 20th Anniversary. A best-of collection had been proposed, and the group gathered together to draw up a potential tracklist. All was well until one of the Eyeballed Entities, unconsciously expressing something none of them had been able to verbalize, threw up on that tracklist. Once the dust had settled, somewhere in there, amongst the resulting soggy mess of vomit, paper and ink, The Residents noticed the proposed best-of song titles had congealed into a collage of new, never before heard tunes. 'Kick A Cat' and 'Picnic In The Jungle' had become 'Kick A Picnic', whilst 'Amber' and 'Six Things To A Cycle' had become 'Six Amber Things'. This was it! Inspired by the rather repulsive mess that sat before them, the group chose to take the entire episode as a sign, and began recording collages of select tracks from their back catalogue as instructed by those soggy scraps. What better way to celebrate twenty long dreary years of obscure stardom and sacrifice a few of their own sacred cows at the same time? Never before released on vinyl, The Residents now present Our Finest Flowers."

SEGALL, TY Three Bells CD
"Ty Segall follows 2022's acoustic introspection opus Hello, Hi with a deeper, wilder journey to the center of the self. With Three Bells, he's created a set of his most ambitious, elastic songs, using his musical vocabulary with ever-increasing sophistication. It's an obsessive quest for an expression that answers back to the riptide always pulling him subconsciously into the depths. It's a growing up and out of your head parable, but the farther out you get, the farther in you go. Since Ty deals in sounds, Three Bells rings with them most of all: sounds signaling the next phase, ringing to keep you stuck, or to set you free, with guitars like voices, questioning and answering the others in their turn. Since 2008, the singer/guitarist/puzzled panther has played out his hunger to be free over a dozen solo LPs and a series of other-named projects. In his music, freedom has taken the form of a rippling eclecticism in songs and production sounds, all of them conversing from album to album in a mad diversity of voices. With all fifteen songs brimming with perspectives, shape-shifting incessantly, not even waiting for a new song to work into the next idea, Three Bells steps into the shoes of both his previous doubles at the same time, designing finally to do the extended format justice. Three Bells kind of goes beyond songs. The fifteen of them work together as a mosaic, creating the larger work at the same time as they stand on their own. Composing the album as a piece, Ty formed certain chord shapes over and over again, making thematic material that each song moves through in its own way, building a claustrophobic/paranoia vibe, cycling bold thrusts forward into ego deaths, the one-step-forward, two-steps-back patterns framing an overriding ask: what we can do to get past the back-and-forth conversation, to arrive at a place of acceptance. Three Bells takes Ty Segall's trips so much deeper and farther than they've gone before -- a masterpiece of personal expression, expressed through words, music and production, parabolically addressing malaise with compassion in a flowing, unstoppable hour-plus of intoxicating sound."

NEHAN An Evening With Nehan LP
"nehan is a Japanese free improvisation and avant-garde rock quintet formed in August 2022. Their performances are initiated by a 9hz brain wave emitted from a testee who has been brought into a deep meditative state via either hypnosis or acupuncture. nehan doesn't begin until the testee has gotten into the state of 'nothingness.' It is only then that the improvisation can begin. The role of improvisation has been key to all the musical projects of Masaki Batoh. In 2010, as Batoh was winding down the activity of his long-standing 'heavy chamber folk' group, Ghost, he became involved in the design of a machine to generate sonic data based on brain waves. An acupuncturist as well as a musician by trade, his interest was spurred by the rhythms of the body and the brain, and a desire to access the 'pulses' of brain waves to initiate improvisations. Following the release of Brain Pulse Music, Batoh toured Japan and the US, making demonstrations of his process using a local volunteer and guest performers, when available. Today, nehan arrive at their performance space prepared with a Brain Pulse testee, bringing a wide array of instruments including gongs, timpani, tabla and other drums and percussion, Crumhorn, bagpipes, mellotron, oscillators and additional sound effects. Their performance is a transformative electro-acoustic display that passes through the prism of music styles, from east to west, from traditional folk and classical to rock, jazz, and avant electronic. While nehan's performance presentation invokes a sense of ritual, they understand their process as being far removed from any type of spiritual endeavor; this is an action of improvisation, occurring in reality between the five musicians on stage, in response to the brain waves of an individual. For the personnel of nehan, Masaki Batoh asked players with whom he had good previous experiences in improvisation: Futoshi Okano (Ghost, Acid Mothers Temple, The Silence), Haruo Kondo (Espvall & Batoh) and Junzo Tateiwa (Ghost), along with female Brain Pulse testee Gozen on oscillators. The performance here, recorded live in August of 2022 at GOK SOUND in Tokyo, demonstrates their communal dedication to the improvisation. The players act as listeners and musicians simultaneously, inspired to make extended pieces of music out of the 'nothingness' of brain waves. The possibilities of nehan's chosen approach are almost infinite; An Evening With Nehan is only the beginning of their journey."

BEE GEES 1st LP
The group takes a psychedelic turn, adding lush orchestral arrangements to the group's tight harmonies and narrative lyrics. The album was recorded at the famed IBC Studios in London. Barry Gibb commented that their recording process was one of impromptu creativity, in which they'd "think up a subject, then write a song on the spot." The instrumental parts were added later, adding a fullness to the songs. For instance, Bee Gee's 1st opens with strains of oboe and harpsichord on the whimsical "Turn of the Century," while "Every Christian Lion Hearted Man Will Show You" begins with dark Gregorian chants.

GILBERTO, ASTRUD I Haven't Got Anything Better To Do LP
With her tenure on Verve drawing to a close, Astrud Gilberto steps further away from her bossa nova roots with I Haven't Got Anything Better to Do, an intimate, nocturnal set closer in scope and spirit to the Baroque pop of Burt Bacharach, whose "Trains and Boats and Planes" is beautifully rendered here. Mistakenly considered a minor entry in the Gilberto canon, I Haven't Got Anything Better to Do is instead a minor masterpiece. Each song is ideally suited to her distinctive style and the disc as a whole maintains a consistency of mood and feeling largely unmatched in her catalog.

BENSON, GEORGE Shape Of Things To Come LP
This A&M/CTI debut album by George Benson signaled the arrival of a true star in the jazz scene. Creed Taylor signed Benson immediately after Wes Montgomery's passing in 1968 -- he was being groomed for it by Verve's house producer, Esmond Edwards, and arranger, Tom McIntosh, before he ever came to CTI. Taylor paired Benson with arranger Don Sebesky (who had done plenty of work on Montgomery's A&M sides) and engineer Rudy Van Gelder. Herbie Hancock and Ron Carter (both members of the Miles Davis Quintet with whom Benson had guested earlier that year), bassist Richard Davis, and pianist Hank Jones were all guests.

SATO, MASAHIKO Holography LP
One of the rarest albums ever from the mighty Masahiko Satoh, a composer and arranger, as well as a key figure in the avantgarde music from Japan. Originally issued on Japan Columbia in 1970, the two sides of very free piano show a sensitivity that's really amazing -- still moments of freedom that reflect Satoh's connection to the avant-garde of the time, interwoven with his own sense of cosmic creation, in ways that are similar to his later projects.

MARCUS/MIROSLAV VITOUS/SONNY SHARROCK/DANIEL HUMAIR, STEVE Green Line LP
Though only ever released in Japan and in sore need of reissue (affordability not being among the virtues of an original copy), Green Line sits easily alongside the most progressive jazz albums of the early '70s, many of which featured the work of the quartet's alumni -- namely Sharrock's uncredited appearance on "Yesternow" for Miles Davis' A Tribute to Jack Johnson, Vitous' early fusion-defining tenure with Weather Report, and Marcus' collaboration with Japanese jazz-rock outfit Jiro Inagaki and Soul Media. And so, Green Line was ultimately the beginning and end of its own trajectory, but damn, what a glorious path it blazed.

FREITAS, AMARO Sankofa LP
2024 repress. LP version. Includes 60x30cm poster. From the slums of Recife in Brazil's North-East to international jazz icon, Amaro Freitas has worked tirelessly to become the artist he is today. His debut and sophomore albums Sangue Negro (2016) and Rasif (FARO 205CD/LP, 2018) arrived on a wave of instant acclaim. His new album Sankofa -- a spiritual quest into the forgotten stories, ancient philosophies and inspirational figures of Black Brazil -- is his most stunning and sincere work to date. But for Amaro Freitas, work isn't just playing the piano, his art delves far deeper than music theory and practice. Explaining the impetus behind Sankofa, Amaro elucidates the imperative behind his music: "I worked to try to understand my ancestors, my place, my history, as a black man. Brazil didn't tell us the truth about Brazil. The history of black people before slavery is rich with ancient philosophies. By understanding the history and the strength of our people, one can start to understand where our desires, dreams and wishes come from." Sankofa is an Adinkra symbol depicting a backward-facing bird. He soon came to understand what it represents, and it became the foundational concept for his new album. With the help of Jean Elton (bass) and Hugo Medeiros (drums), who have formed the Amaro Freitas Trio since the very beginning, Amaro employs intricate rhythmic patterns and time-signature variations as if reimagining the ancient designs of his ancestors, and every track is imbued with a message or a story Amaro is compelled to tell. "Baquaqua" highlights the seldom told story of the West African Mahommah Gardo Baquaqua, who was brought to Brazil as a slave but escaped to New York in 1847 where he learned to read and write. The delicate "Vila Bela" takes its name after an area near the Bolivian border, in Brazil's Mato Grosso region, where the 18th century Quilombola queen Tereza de Benguela led the black and indigenous community in resisting slavery for two decades. "Nascimento" is a warmhearted tribute to the great star of Minas Gerais, who Amaro sees as a talisman of contemporary Black Brazilian culture. "Ayeye", Sankofa's most joyful moment, means celebration in Yoruba and features gorgeous, fluttering piano, shuffling hi-hats and a stuttering bass groove, at times sounding as much like a D'Angelo or Alicia Keys hit as it does Bill Evans or Thelonious Monk. Named after a mythical bull from the tropical region of Maranh?o, "Cazumb?" represents the interdependence of all living things. A jazz rock pulse represents a noisy urban city port, and as the track develops it's as if the group moves out into the tranquility of the rainforest river.

BERLE, BRUNO No Reino Dos Afetos LP
2024 repress. LP version. Macei?, the capital of Brazil's Alagoas state on its sprawling east-coast, is home to pastel colored colonial houses, white sand beaches and a brilliant young composer, poet and multi-instrumentalist named Bruno Berle. With a voice of pure gold and a startling sensitivity for heartfelt pop songwriting, on No Reino Dos Afetos (In the Realm of Affections), Berle firmly embraces earnestness, through starry-eyed Brazilian love songs, ambient vignettes, warm, home-cooked beats and gentle strokes of MPB genius. "It's an album that was built from my desire to find beauty", Berle explains -- his simple, graceful words mirroring the graceful simplicity in his music. But amongst the simplicity, the compositions, arrangements and productions on No Reino Dos Afetos tingle with nuance and detail. On the contemporary R&B inspired lead single "Quero Dizer" -- produced by Berle and longtime friend and collaborator Batata Boy -- the swirling, lo-fi, kalimba, and guitar-fronted beat is turned into a feel-good hit by the ingenuity of Berle's honey-soaked vocal melody. Powerfully intimate, "O Nome Do Meu Amor" (My Love's Name) is a guaranteed tearjerker, with Berle's stunning voice soaring over gently plucked acoustic guitar and the textural flutter of soft movement, as if we hear him writing the song in the moment. Drawing upon a close-knit, collaborative scene of Macei? artists and musicians, (of which Berle and Batata Boy are vital members), Berle also recorded some of his friends' songs on the album, including Jo?o Menezes's "At? Meu Violao", the album's beautifully laidback sunshine soul opener, which has all the charm of early-70s Jo?o Donato. Having cut his teeth in soft-rock group Troco em Bala, and more recently finding himself embedded in both Rio and Sao Paulo's contemporary music scenes -- collaborating with the likes of Ana Frango Eletrico, who took the photo for the album cover -- No Reino Dos Afetos is as musically diverse as Bruno himself. It's hazy indie rock ("? Preciso Ter Amor"), calming ambient and field recording ("Virginia Talk") as well as Berle's own take on West African high life ("Som Nyame"). Instantly recognizable as a truly special artist, Berle's character fills every corner of the sound, which is unsurprising considering he played most of the instruments.

DO NASCIMENTO, FABIANO Mundo Solo CD
Far Out Recordings presents the new album from Brazilian guitarist and composer Fabiano do Nascimento: Mundo Solo. Recorded at his home studio in Los Angeles (2020) the album is fundamentally the sound of a man alone with his instruments. Utilizing a variety of guitars, including six, seven, and 1ten strings, Oktav guitar and electric baritone guitar, alongside a host of pedals and synthesizers, Fabiano tracked imagined landscapes with expressive, expansive improvisations, which tend toward the more ambient and atmospheric reaches of his recent output. Adopting Hermeto Pascoal's concept of "Universal Music," a rejection of nationalistic tendencies in order to express all of one's musical influences all at once, Fabiano avoided leaning too heavily on any particular musical language, without denying his own musical roots. After studying classical piano as a child, the Rio de Janeiro native discovered the guitar at aged ten. Studying under his late uncle, Lucio Nascimento, he eventually left Brazil for LA, where he soon became an in-demand player for his distinct and authentic sound. He has since released seven albums under his own name and collaborated with renowned Brazilian artists including Arthur Verocai and Airto Moreira, as well as experimental US saxophonist Sam Gendel. Mundo Solo (Do Nascimento's eighth), was recorded in one take per track, with occasional overdubs and a few appearances from collaborators and friends Julien Canthelm (drums on "Etude 1"), Ajurin? Zwarg, (percussion on "CPMV") and Gabe Noel (bass on "Curumim"). Fabiano Do Nascimento's consummate mastery of his instrument has afforded him a freedom of expression few can claim. Blending the emotional with the elemental, Mundo Solo is a stunning snapshot of solitude and the beauty which can blossom within it.

KLEISTWAHR For the Lives Once Lived CD
Several years ago, Gary Mundy of Ramleh/Broken Flag (and far more besides) declared to me that he wished to do one new Kleistwahr album every year until he's no longer able to do them. Fourth Dimension Records has subsequently fulfilled a promise to honor this plan as much as possible and is managing to keep up so far. How Gary manages to keep pulling new ideas out of the proverbial hat at this rate is anybody's guess, but the latest album, For the Lives Once Lived illustrates very clearly that the wellspring he draws from has far from dried up. If you have been paying attention to the albums that have been released by Fourth Dimension Records during recent years, you should understand that his solo music has retained the molten intensity it has always been propelled by since Kleistwahr was founded in the early 1980s. While the work occasionally seems as though it draws from the same dusty religious setting as some of Messiaen's wonderful organ compositions, there's still an all-encompassing blanket of ravaged psychedelia firmly laced with blood-flecked barbs to help counter this. When Kleistwahr's music seems poised to elevate the atmospheric gestures towards the sublime and elegiac, there's always a gaping maw lined with razor-edged teeth lurking nearby to help keep all those lofty hopes and expectations from getting above themselves. For the Lives Once Lived may also surprise many with its opening song, "Rotten Boroughs," which both stands out from the rest of the album yet makes sense as part of it. This is another fantastic album from the unstoppable force that is Gary Mundy's Kleistwahr. Long may it continue. For the Lives Once Lived appears packaged in a Broken Flag-style sleeve featuring photos by Chris Low, design by Puppy38, and mastering by Sion Orgon.

SOULS OF MISCHIEF 93 'Til Infinity 2LP
"Consisting of MCs A+, Phesto, Opio, and Tajai (with production by A+, Domino, Del the Funky Homosapien, Jay Biz and Casual), East Oakland's Souls of Mischief burst onto the scene in the early '90s with an impact that few other West Coast artists had at the time. Culminating in the release of their classic debut, they created a bouillabaisse that was most parts West Coast swagger but -- similar to The D.O.C. and Cypress Hill - with a sonic approach that could just as well have stepped off the streets of New York City. Recorded in less than two weeks at San Francisco's Hyde Street Studios, 93 'til Infinity doesn't suffer from a single freshman jitter or misstep. It's a fully-realized effort, packed from start to finish with ridiculous lyricism -- all carried out in impressive four-part, tag-team style -- and backed by a wide range of musical possibilities, from hard boom-bap to '70s CTI-jazz-sprinkled grooves. But without worthy music, the group's high-level lyricism could have fallen by the wayside. Digging deep into crates that other producers had yet to mine, the production crew gave the quartet exactly what they needed, with unpredictable rolling basslines, dusty drums and jazz keyboard and horn stabs and swirls. Get On Down is presents a 30th Anniversary pressing of this west coast hip-hop classic on cloudy blue and cloudy yellow vinyl, packaged in a gatefold jacket with liner notes and a commemorative 30th Anniversary stamped numbered OBI."

DEL THA FUNKY HOMOSAPIEN No Need For Alarm 2LP
"After breaking out of the Bay Area underground scene in the early '90s with I Wish My Brother George Was Here, Del The Funky Homosapien made a radical turn with his sophomore release, '93's No Need For Alarm. Casting aside the familiar G-funk vibe of his debut, perhaps as No Need was produced without the involvement of his cousin Ice Cube and The Boogiemen, he moved into a jazzier -- some would say more East Coast direction with production by the Hieroglyphics crew of Domino, A-Plus, Casual, and Del himself with contributions from the SD50s. The verbal content on No Need shifted as well, moving away from comic interludes and towards a focus on battle raps. No Need For Alarm is one of the three Hiero Golden Age releases (along with Souls of Mischief's '93 til Infinity and Casual's Fear Itself). Though some critics are harsh on No Need For Alarm and claim it's not as strong an effort as Del's debut, many disagree and see this release as being the first where Del really stood out. Regardless of which side of the fence one falls on that topic, it's without doubt that No Need For Alarm has stood the test of time and remains a challenging and uncompromising follow up from one of the most talented and eccentrically gifted artists to ever emerge from the world of West Coast hip hop. To commemorate the 30th Anniversary, Get On Down is presents a limited edition double colored vinyl pressing with a stamped numbered OBI and fold out poster."

Saramaccan Sound (Suriname) are a brother duo -- Dwight Sampie and Robert Jabini -- who write and perform flowing acoustic songs sung in Saramaccan, the language from the Americas with the most African elements. Their debut album was recorded in situ by Grammy winner Ian Brennan (Parchman Prison Prayer, Ustad Saami, The Good Ones) along a remote riverside in the Amazon region of Suriname. The lyrics are topical and reference everyday strife such as the rising tides and floods in the area due to global warming. Their bone raw songs and performances evoke heart-worn longing, a deep sense of place and a strange familiarity. As if Merle Haggard had been raised in the Amazon rather than Bakersfield. Where the River Bends Is Only the Beginning is the 12th release in Glitterbeat's acclaimed Hidden Musics series.

RAT SECTION What Stays In Vegas CD
A chance meeting in Bucharest two summers ago saw Ratty Slay Johnson and Soopie reunite. It has been a much-discussed topic amongst art and music circles as to how and why Rat Section abruptly fell into obscurity in the late '90s and up to this point their sudden disappearance remains a mystery. Their sparse back catalogue seems inaccessible now. A dedicated collecting community known as "Club Rodentia" sought to preserve their tape and vinyl output, amassing releases from Ratty Slay Johnnies sophomore release Tails from Estonia to Soopi and Slay John's last known excursion Tashkent Knights. An unfortunate occurrence led to the destruction of this archive in 2005. Member of Club Rodentia Carlos Moscato was quoted in an article of NME magazine saying "In the dark of night, a fire emerged, I was responsible at the time for the care of the archive, as standard Rodentia protocol we would move the collection every three months, for both preservation and for local access to Rat Sections catalogue. On the final night of my duty I heard footsteps, a crash, and before my eyes years of hard work erupted in flames. Since this incident I haven't found even a crumb of Rat Sections body of work and people say we will never see them again." Carlos Moscato was correct, until now. Rat Section have been active for the last two years with appearances in London, Berlin, Malm?, Melbourne, Paris and Los Angeles, it looks like listeners are finally going to hear Rat Section again. They have found a home for their debut album on Halcyon Veil. Rat Section are back in the spotlight.

Particular attention has been paid to the way the songs are sequenced so that the album builds up nicely and gradually, starting with the rocksteady songs on the A Side and the '70s songs on the B Side. The Hot Sauce series is a musical journey across Trojan and its labels highlighting early Jamaican reggae's many diverse sub-genres and outstanding artists. CUT Dead City Nights CD
"If you've not witnessed CUT storming on stage in the last 25 years I'm not sure you've witnessed rock n' roll in its purest form, an onslaught of concrete punk, garage belters and the necessary dose of sleaze and bravado when the song calls for it. Two guitars, one drum kit, that's been their formula forever, low-end/high-end, angular, in-yer-face on paper but subtle in execution, confrontational at first but with a heart that looms large, soulful yet fierce. Dead City Nights is no exception and maybe marks their highest achievement, chock-full of signature bangers and the usual dose of irony. Carlo, Ferruccio, and Tony are back it, move out of their way! The opening verse of 'Mr. Spaceman', taken from the Byrds' Fifth Dimension, describes very well the predominant mood among us during the last two/three years, the time period in which the Dead City Nights songs were born. Now 16 years ago (OMG!), in a song called 'Nightride' we sang 'the city is our playground at night' -- and instead while writing these 13 songs we saw our cities shut down, becoming ghost towns just to quote the Specials . . . Dead City Nights is our seventh album: unlike Second Skin -- its predecessor, which saw the participation of many friends and guests -- it is a record made by the three of us only with some intervention by our producer Bruno Germano to enrich some of the arrangements. Even though we loved and still love Second Skin and the sessions that led to its creation, for this album we wanted to go back to the way of working that has always characterized us: the three of us alone, in the rehearsal room, arguing about every single riff and drum groove until we reach a result that satisfied us all. After all, the events we were talking about above would not allow us to work differently, even if we wanted to. The big difference compared to almost everything else in our discography is that -- inevitably -- we haven't been able to break in the songs live, as we usually do before entering the studio . . . Dead City Nights is also our first album with Antonio 'Tony Booza' on drums (The Titbits, The Boozers, The Narcotics): once again, welcome home Tony!" Ferruccio Quercetti, December 2022

BLOOD ULMER, JAMES Inandout 2LP
"James Blood Ulmer turns back the wheel of time with his Album Inandout. Just a few chords and he is back where everything began. In Detroit, where the gruff guitarist had his first gigs in the bands of organists Hank Marr and Big John Patton. In Minton's Playhouse, New York, with all of those big names, such as Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, Rashied Ali, Paul Bley, Larry Young, Ronald Shannon Jackson, Arthur Blythe, David Murray, Julius Hemphill, Pharaoh Sanders, John Zorn, Vernon Reid, and Bill Laswell, who were leading him through the improvising wilderness. And with his shining hero, Ornette Coleman, who encouraged 'Blood' to transpose the special harmonies he created to the finger board of the guitar. Ulmer, at age 67, takes stock while at the same time is looking forward. 'In & Out' is the title of a composition by the legendary tenor saxophone player, Joe Henderson, and is also the name of the record company for which 'Blood' recorded this masterpiece. Says James, 'Joe gave me a job and helped me to become known. I am very grateful to him. He was my friend.' And it was for this reason that Ulmer dedicated 'Song For Joe' to Henderson. In addition, there are nine other tunes, created by his trio, which features Mark Peterson on bass and Aubrey Dayle on drums. 'Blood' likes to shake people awake. Not with commercial superficiality, which was never his message. He prefers the suspenseful depth. 'Those who are full of satisfaction should no longer listen, but for those who still yearn for the truth, I will deliver it.' The truth for Ulmer lies deep in his music. This is a musician who, from the very beginning, has been an exception to the rule. James 'Blood' Ulmer has never been driven into the mainstream, but, on principle, always swam against the stream. Blues, time and again, Blues. The only truly free music."

The Old Gods of Asgard, also known as Poets of the Fall, are once again part of the gaming world! The upcoming album, Rebirth: Greatest Hits, includes four previously digitally released tracks and four brand new songs, three of which are featured in Remedy's game Alan Wake 2. Remedy Entertainment is one of Finland's most successful gaming companies, and the upcoming game is one of Finland's all-time biggest entertainment productions. Marko, Olli, and Captain from the band Poets of the Fall are appearing for the first time in Alan Wake 2 as characters from the Old Gods of Asgard band. So, the Old Gods of Asgard band is a collaborative creation of Sami J?rvi from Remedy and Poets of the Fall. The band has its own story, history, and mythology within the universe of Remedy's games. The lyrics of the songs are closely related to the game's plot and provide hints to players. The band was last heard in Remedy's Control game in 2019, with the unique "Take Control" song being the first interactive rock song that changes with the game situation during a long battle scene. The entire collaboration with Remedy began in 2003 with the game Max Payne 2, which featured the band's first song, the hit "Late Goodbye." It won the "Grammy of the gaming world," the G.A.N.G. Award for the best pop song in a video game. It was a great start for both the band's career and their collaboration with Remedy.

HASSELL, JON The Surgeon Of The Nightsky Restores Dead Things By The Power Of Sound CD
"Original 1991 CD release. In a tried and tested association with Brian Eno (as producer), Jon Hassell's first completely live-recorded album was released at that time. The individual pieces, which were recorded in Paris, Vancouver, Hamburg and Brussels, reflect the special atmosphere that made every (rare) Hassell concert something extraordinary. The extremely delicate preparation and post-processing of the live material in the studio mix also makes it clear to the listener what subtle means Jon Hassell used to captivate his audience. In interaction with the audience, Hassell opens a window to the understanding of a music whose pulse and mood can be heard and perceived simultaneously in New York, Rangoon, Maracaibo, Paris, Palembang or Cologne. This album is an absolute work of sound-art."

VA Greasy Mike's Volume 6: Lost & Lonely Ladies LP
The sublime, seductive sound of the smooth and sultry songstress. "Sometimes me and the opposite sex just don't get along. I mean, we do and we don't. Take this last one. She and I were getting on just fine. We went to the movies, I took her to shows, I took her out to fancy restaurants. The whole works. I treated her real good. She was a class act too. Blonde hair, blue eyes. A smile to die for. Then all of a sudden, she went cold on me. Cut me off. Why do they do that? What gives? I mean, I'm an OK guy. I'm clean, smart, I shave every day. I wear the best suits, I use the best Cologne. OK so I don't have what you'd call 'a regular job', but I got plenty of dough, and I know how to spend it. I like the finer things in life. Restaurants, Cuban cigars, fancy cars. The whole caboodle. What's not to like? I'll tell you what. These dames don't know a good thing when they see it. They meet a guy like me and they don't know what's hit 'em. I take them out, I wine them and dine them and they just can't handle it. They'd rather go for some kinda Joe Schmoe than a classy guy like me. And that's what I don't understand. So what gives?" --Greasy Mike in an interview circa 1958 with jazz jock Slim Jenkins.Featuring Ann Cole, Joya Sharrill, Marilyn Ross, Lyn Avalon, Ann Henry, Mecie Jenkins, Tommie Jeane Whitley, Helen Alvey, Miss Johni Naylor, Ann Fleming, Delores Johnson, Wini Beatty, Patti Dane, Anna Marie, Patty Ann, and Genie Pace.

TAYLOR, PAUL Submerged CD
"Paul Taylor is one half of Sutcliffe No More, formerly Sutcliffe Jugend. He is and was also a member of Inertia, Bodychoke, and Slaves No More. Most of his music has its background in the power electronics scene that evolved in Great Britain around the label Come Organisation and the group Whitehouse. Power electronics is a style of noise music that typically consists of static, screeching waves of feedback, analogue synthesizers making sub-bass pulses or high frequency squealing sounds; with screamed and distorted vocals. The genre is noted for its influence from industrial. It is generally atonal, like most noise music and also features a lack of conventional melodies or rhythms. To match its sonic excess, power electronics relies heavily upon extreme thematic and visual content: whether in lyrics, album art, or live performance actions. For Submerged, a very private and introspective album, Paul lets the psyche dive deep into the depths of the ocean. The music is dark, droney and meditative."

To match its sonic excess, power electronics relies heavily upon extreme thematic and visual content: whether in lyrics, album art, or live performance actions. For his solo work, Kevin sometimes uses a very different style to his group work. An autoharp or chord zither is a string instrument belonging to the zither family. It uses a series of bars individually configured to mute all strings other than those needed for the intended chord. In summer 2023, Kevin played a rare solo show in Vienna at Klanggalerie's 30th birthday bash. It was based on his autoharp album using that very instrument plus voice and an arrangement of gimmicks and tools. A week later, he created an album based on the performance and his time in Vienna."

HASTINGS OF MALAWI Live In Vienna CD
"Originally, Hastings of Malawi were Heman Pathak, David Hodes, and John Grieve. They recorded the album in one night in 1981 with no plan and no idea of what they were doing. They played drums, clarinet, synthesizer and piano but also made use of things that they found lying around the studio -- old records, cookery books, telephone directories and a telephone. The recordings were played down the phone to randomly dialed numbers and the reactions added to the recording. All three had been involved in the recording of the first Nurse with Wound album Chance Meeting On A Dissecting Table Of A Sewing Machine And An Umbrella and had contributed metal scrapings, piano, effects, clarinet and guitar during the session. The band split up after the first album but reformed 35 years later with a string of new albums. In June 2023, Hastings Of Malawi were invited to play the Klang 30 festival in Vienna, Austria. This was only the second time the band graced a stage, 38 years after the first performance. This outstanding rare opportunity was recorded and is now presented on CD."

LAME Dejad Que Vengan LP
A decade after the international boom of the Iberian Hardcore scene and its subsequent decline, some members of the bands Orden Mundial and Barcelona, scattered around Europe, got together to form Lame, with Morreadoras' bassist on vocal duties. These seven songs were written in Mallorca during four days and recorded in pieces between Mallorca and Berlin shortly after. An instantaneous and fleeting project, quick and concise, with no time for regrets. A journey through the generalized madness that affects us from far and near; a mixture of reflections and blind head-butts against the padded walls of understanding. The loss of control, the loss of time, the loss of oneself and the loss of dear departed all meet at once. Resignation is death indeed. What does it sound like? Unabashed hardcore with a broad spectrum of current and classic influences. Serrated guitar riffs, mechanical deep bass lines and hypnotic drumming backing an extremely sharp and vile vocal delivery. It can remind you at times of Chain Reaction and GRB, of Rudimentary Peni and Nog Watt. All passed through a Mediterranean filter.

COLD STORAGE wipE'out" - The Zero Gravity Soundtrack 3LP
Repressed; triple LP version. Back in the 1990s, video games were still largely seen as nerdy: fun, sure, but basically a guilty pleasure that you'd soon grow out of. The release in 1995 of wipE'out'', a lightning-fast, razor-sharp, futuristic racing game that helped to launch the PlayStation in Europe and North America, changed all that. This was a game that looked and sounded both adult and cool, the kind of game you would put on display in your living room, rather than hide away under your bed. Key to this was the fact that wipE'out'' borrowed unashamedly from the clubbing experience and electronic music, in a way that put it at the heart of progressive mid '90s culture. wipE?out?? also sounded like a new rave dream. The European version of the game included music from The Chemical Brothers, Leftfield, and Orbital, the kind of fashionable game syncs that were almost unheard of at the time. Equally striking was the game's original music, which came from Welsh musician Tim Wright, aka CoLD SToRAGE, by this point already a veteran in the video games world, having worked on the music for Amiga titles such as Lemmings and Shadow of the Beast 2. His music for wipE?out?? was, if anything, even more extreme than the big-name syncs, mixing the accelerated beats of drum and bass with the pure synth rush of trance to make music that sounded as breathlessly exciting as playing the game felt. These tracks were burned into the brains of millions of gamers; the soundtrack to a generation of late-night anti-gravity racing, as the sun gingerly rose beyond the curtains. But they haven't, perhaps, quite got the respect they deserve, something that this release will address. Featuring remixes by ?-Ziq, Wordcolour, Brainwaltzera, James Shinra, Kode9, Simo Cell, Surgeons Girl, Datassette.

RE:EAP Zoo For Barbers CD
"Inspired by the short stories and poetry of Edgar Allan Poe, Re:EAP make unique music that does not fit into any recognized genres. Each song refers either directly or indirectly to the writer's historic work, and creates a sound world that is strikingly fresh, blending composition and improvisation, acoustic and electric timbres, conventional and unconventional homemade instruments in order to vividly evoke the themes broached in Poe's texts. The band was founded by Kevin Le Gendre (regular at BBC 4's Front Row, and writer at The Times, The Guardian, Jazzwise and many more) in spring 2017 and made its live debut at Wilton's Music Hall in east London in winter of that year as part of a celebration of Poe, and has been working steadily towards its debut album in the past few years. The original bandmembers include internationally renowned classical percussionist Beibei Wang, who has collaborated with the BBC and Toronto Symphony Orchestras, pianist Colin Thorpe, a major force in black music in Britain over the past four decades, and vocalist Miryam Solomon, a hugely talented artist who has released music to great acclaim in the past few years."

FLYING BURRITO BROS, THE Live At The Bottom Line NYC 1976 LP
"Touring in support of their fifth studio album Airborne, The Flying Burrito Brothers performed at the legendary New York City venue, The Bottom Line on August 18, 1976. This 12-track set features many of their classic tracks alongside a few C&W standards. The group's line up consisted of Skip Battin and Gene Parsons (both ex-Byrds band members), along with Gib Guilbeau, Joel Scott Hill and original Burrito pedal steel legend, 'Sneaky' Pete Kleinow. This live recording is previously unreleased. 1976 was a great year for re-iteration of the Flying Burrito Brothers having the opportunity to travel throughout the USA celebrating the 200th Anniversary of the founding of the United States. Though Gram Parsons wasn't around anymore, Chris Hillman embarked on a solo career, and Chris Ethridge had just departed this band, we had some great guys that just happened to be really familiar with the 'Burrito' mentality. It all came together quite spectacularly! To begin, Gib Guilbeau was my life-long pal and Cajun guy par excellence. Gene Parsons, formerly of the Byrds, was he drummer from hell who lifted the excitement to the limit (and picked a great banjo and string bender guitar. What can I say about Joel Scott Hill? A rebel? A reverent fanatic? A soulful and emotional artist? ALL of the above! Then there is Skip Battin, who just joined the band whom everyone loved and called friend who provided very original bass and vocal support. All these cuts are genuine items from a live performance at New York City's legendary "Bottom Line" club with all the warts AND magical moments. No fix ups and no apologies. Just real music and true enthusiasm. This was the way it was when he hit the road in 1976!" --Sneaky Pete, 2001

INSECT TRUST, THE The Insect Trust LP
Insect Trust were an American jazz-based rock band that formed in New York in 1967. The members of the band were Nancy Jeffries on vocals, Bill Barth on guitar, Luke Faust -- formerly of the Holy Modal Rounders -- on guitar, banjo, fiddle, and harmonica, Trevor Koehler on saxophone, and Robert Palmer (1945 -- 1997) on clarinet and alto saxophone. Elvin Jones and Bernard Purdie both drummed with the group at times. Bill Folwell, who had played with Albert Ayler (and later an original member of The Mystic Knights of the Oingo Boingo), on bass and trumpet; as well as Warren Gardner on trumpet and clarinet, were part of the band by the time they recorded their second album. The band probably took its name from William S. Burroughs's novel Naked Lunch. The music ranges from surreal folk-rock (in the vein of such local heroes like Holy Modal Rounders and Fugs), to Booker T.-like pop-soul, to flat-out free jazz. Never intended to be a traditional pop act, the Insect Trust should be best remembered for extending rock's boundaries and taking the genre to a much hipper level without resorting to a lot of banal technique.

HADAKA NO RALLIZES (LES RALLIZES DENUDES) Flightless Bird Needs Water Wings - Vol. 1 LP
This record is a nice summary of some of the band's earlier work -- when infamous bassist Moriaki Wakabayashi was still playing before he went and hijacked a plane (he was a member of the "Yodog? Group" of the radical New Left Japan Communist League's "Red Army Faction" that carried out the hijacking of Japan Airlines Flight 351 in 1970, ultimately forcing the plane to fly to North Korea, where Wakabayashi currently resides). A seemingly endless sonic flame-throwers of phased white noise streak across your inner landscape, as stupidly loud and overly-backlit lead guitar emissions perpetrated by a perpetually be-shaded longhair pummel the similarly be-shaded but barely adequate musical backing that sags and creaks under the wattage. Contemporary groups like the Wooden Shjips would have killed for it. Occasionally, lead vocals of a singular variety are provided by said be-shaded mad axeman, whose paranoid personality ensures all songs are delivered in a voice of querulous subterranean gargling from beyond the valley of Alan Vega. A great collection of LRD tracks with a good level of cohesiveness that brings everything you would expect from this band to the table.

DIAS DE BLUES Dias De Blues LP
2024 repress. Little Butterfly Records present a reissue of Dias De Blues' self-titled album, originally released by Discos De La Planta in 1973. Dias De Blues (Montevideo, Uruguay) was formed in 1972 by Jorge Barral (bass), Daniel Bertolone (guitar), and Jorge Graf (drums). They developed a blues and heavy rock proposal that was characterized by virtuosity of the musicians and blunt rhythmic base, mixed with the unusual strength, energy and aggressiveness. With all these elements they performed extensive improvisations. The lyrics that incorporated a plain, direct and politically incorrect language, were sung by Barral and Bertolone with rage and a clearly Uruguayan diction, though with certain John Mayall-style influence. Disenchantment with established society was part of the band's philosophy. For them, the name of the band, Dias De Blues meant "fucked up days", times of crisis, days of economic and cultural alienation, not just a reference to a musical style. Comes as 140 gram vinyl.

GLASS, PHILIP The Essential (Crystal Clear Vinyl) 4LP
"Through his operas, his symphonies, his compositions for his own ensemble, and his wide-ranging collaborations with artists ranging from Twyla Tharp to Allen Ginsberg, Woody Allen to David Bowie, Philip Glass has had an extraordinary and unprecedented impact upon the musical and intellectual life of his times. The operas -- Einstein on the Beach, Satyagraha, and Akhnaten among many others -- play throughout the world's leading houses, and rarely to an empty seat. Glass has written music for experimental theater and for Academy Award-winning motion pictures. Glass is the first composer to win a wide, multi-generational audience in the opera house, the concert hall, the dance world, in film and in popular music - simultaneously. Much of his early work was based on the extended reiteration of brief, elegant melodic fragments that wove in and out of an aural tapestry. Or, to put it another way, it immersed a listener in a sort of sonic weather that twists, turns, surrounds, develops. In the past 30 years, Glass has composed more than twenty-five operas, large and small; twelve symphonies; three piano concertos and concertos for violin, piano, timpani, and saxophone quartet and orchestra; soundtracks to films ranging from new scores for the stylized classics of Jean Cocteau to Errol Morris's documentary about former defense secretary Robert McNamara; string quartets; a growing body of work for solo piano and organ. Essential is available as a limited edition of 1500 individually numbered copies on crystal clear vinyl. The 4LP is housed in a deluxe 10mm slipcase sleeve and includes a four-page booklet."

"If there was ever an outsider folk record that truly had it all, here it is! This LP from 1974 is impossible to compare with any other LP, but at the same time, can be compared to some of the most visionary folk LPs ever! Picture a combination of early Bob Dylan, Skip Spence, the first Gordon Bok LP, Tim Buckley, Lou Reed, Peter Grudzien, Ernest Stoneman, Daniel Johnson, Richard & Mimi Farina, Chris Smither, and Phil Ochs. But is a record all its own, with unique and classic songs about loner strangeness, fishermen, other 'heady abstract stuff,' Provincetown girls and the best JFK tribute ever! Also includes some wild trad songs and the amazing psych folk classic 'In Search of Something.' This was privately pressed in 1974, and unbelievably never reissued until now! This reissue includes a cool bonus track (the only song he wrote and recorded after recording the LP) and a eight-page booklet with interviews, photos and excerpts from many of his different writings. First pressing of 300 copies with hand-painted covers."

BLU & NOTTZ Afrika CD
"An independent hip-hop fixture for more than 15 years, famed Los Angeles emcee Blu has mastered the lost art of the album, imbuing each new project with unique themes and often recruiting a single producer to craft a cohesive sonic experience. This has led to full-length collaborations with the likes of Exile, Madlib, Shafiq Husayn, Oh No, Damu The Fudgemunk, and more, along with the 2018 classic Gods In The Spirit, Titans In The Flesh, produced by Virginia beatsmith Nottz. With major credits dating back to the late 1990s, Nottz is a production icon who has worked with Busta Rhymes, Snoop Dogg, 50 Cent, Scarface, The Game, Pusha T, Slaughterhouse, Ghostface Killah, Rapsody, Asher Roth, Little Brother, Talib Kweli, and many more. Now, Blu and Nottz are reuniting for the new album Afrika, a celebration of the rich history and culture of their ancestral homeland. With Swahili song titles and thunderous beats from Nottz, the collection finds Blu proudly embracing his roots, connecting black struggles in the U.S. to those of African peoples worldwide. In 1974, Montenegro released Hugo In Wonderland, his take on the catalog of music icon Stevie Wonder. To mention two examples, the takes of "Transmission" And "She's Lost Control" even take on a much more aggressive quality than what was originally put to tape. FELIX & RAY RODRIGUEZ, PAPO Papo Felix Meets Ray Rodriguez LP
"Now-Again Records presents catalog-wide reissues of Latin music propellant Joe Bataan's legendary Ghetto Records. Next up in the series -- one of the label's most lauded recordings containing epic examples of big band salsa, Horace Silver-flavored modal jazz and soulful grooves -- masterminded by a young Bobby Rodr?guez with vocals by Papo Felix. Ghetto Records was Joe Bataan's way to get over on 'The Man' and out of the 'hood, a bold move by an artist looking for independence and creative control in an industry that had exploited his talents and treated him like chattel. As Bataan puts it today, 'Ghetto Records was part of my journey, a stepping stone to everything else that I've done. I learned enough that it enabled me to get out of the box with my thinking, it showed me how to deal with adversity.' Like many dreams and schemes born of the street, this one was audacious, perhaps even reckless to a fault. Hatched from desperation yet full of hope Ghetto Records came crashing down shortly after its inception. The seven albums in its discography languished out of print -- until now. These are the definitive reissues of these albums, licensed from Joe Bataan, with his oversight and input into a 16-page oversize book by Pablo Yglesias that details Bataan's larger-than-imagination life and his little Latin label that could."

Next up in the series -- Puerto Rico-born pianist Joe Acosta had a long, if unsung career in Latin music, but his Ghetto Records LP is his best and most sought-after album. GLASS, PHILIP Philip Glass Solo LP
"Philip Glass will share a new album, Philip Glass Solo, via Orange Mountain Music. The collection is an intimate portrait of the renowned pianist at 84, as he takes a new look at some of his most enduring and beloved piano works. Philip Glass Solo was recorded at a time when the world was undergoing a major shift -- for Glass, that shift manifested in going from a busy tour and premiere schedule to time spent at home during the COVID-19 pandemic. Glass dedicated this time to revisiting some of his most critically acclaimed piano music, taking to them with a new view in his home studio in New York. It is his most personal record to date, offering a snapshot of his life, and a portrait of daily practice over eight decades through several cherished works. Philip Glass Solo will feature 'Opening,' originally written for the 1982 album Glassworks, which remains one of Glass' most transfixing pieces and established a sound that quickly became a calling card, 'Metamorphosis' I, II, III, and V, the series of music Glass arranged for his first solo piano concerts in the 1980s; one of his most beloved pieces and longest performances on record, 'Mad Rush,' which he composed as an organ piece in 1978 when the Dalai Lama made his first public address in New York; and a reworked version of 'Truman Sleeps' from the soundtrack of the beloved '90s film The Truman Show, where Glass appeared on screen performing the piano in one of the pivotal scenes of the film. His changes speak to the heart of all artists' evolution of both themselves, and their music, over time. 180gram, tip-on jacket, limited edition of 2000."

RANELIN, PHIL The Found Tapes: Live in Los Angeles 4LP BOX
Four LP version. "The Found Tapes: Live in Los Angeles is a box set from Tribe Records co-founder Phil Ranelin, celebrating a trio of LA club performances from 1978 - 1981 which remain especially significant to the visionary trombonist. Backed by a young Billy Childs on piano, Ralph Penland on drums, and Tony Dumas on bass, Ranelin was in peak form as a player and bandleader during this period. This is particularly true of one specific outing at the now shuttered Maiden Voyage in Los Angeles on July 19, 1981, which is presented in full within this set. The audio was restored from decades old cassette tapes which have never been heard until now. A master trombonist of the J.J. Johnson tradition, Ranelin's career has spanned over five decades with eleven records as a solo artist, four as a Freddie Hubbard sideman, session recordings for Motown, and work with artists ranging from Stevie Wonder and Ella Fitzgerald to Red Hot Chili Peppers and Telefon Tel Aviv."

J DILLA Ruff Draft: Dilla's Mix LP
"When Ruff Draft saw its initial release in 2003, J Dilla possessed production skills on par with anyone in hip-hop -- technically and creatively. 'At the top of his game,' says longtime friend and collaborator, Karriem Riggins. After years of building while modestly deferring to others of both greater and lesser notoriety, Dilla finally completed the first solo endeavor on his own label, entirely on his own terms. The significance of such an autonomous success often gets overlooked, and partly accounts for why Ruff Draft is one of the lesser-referenced entries in Dilla's oeuvre. 'It's a mysterious little project,' says his mother, Maureen Yancey. 'But out of his entire career, that was the happiest time.' Prior to recording the EP, Dilla found himself at a crossroads. Estranged from his label, MCA, and separated from the mother of his youngest daughter, frustration abounded both personally and professionally. Dilla spent parts of 2002 and 2003 working on an album for MCA that featured his rapping over contributions from other producers with whom he had connected and whose music he respected. At the time, he was known primarily for his beats, yet reviled for his MCing by most anyone not from his hometown of Detroit. The project was to be an intentional freak of the industry. The project would go on to spur his collaborative album with Madlib, Jaylib, and would first showcase the template that he would take to his greatest heights with 2006's Donuts. The Stones Throw reissue of Ruff Draft from 2008 featured remixes of the songs from the album, done without Dilla's involvement. This version of the album takes Dilla's mixes of the album and restores his vision for the project. 'Straight from the mothafuckin' cassette,' as he phrased the sound he was going for on the EP's intro."

FRATELLI MALIBU Tema Di Susie Reloved 12"
"Tema di Susie is one of the main themes from the soundtrack composed by Alessandro Alessandroni for the 1976 Italian noir Sangue di sbirro, known in English as Blood and Bullets, as well as Knell, Bloody Avenger. At once sweet and sentimental, haunting and melancholic, Tema di Susie stands out from the other tracks in the film, which are more action oriented. Like the rest of the score, however, it exemplifies the way in which, during the '70s, Italian film composers created their own version of the sound of American blaxploitation cinema, with its groovy blend of funk, jazz, and soul. It is no coincidence that the film's director, B-movie specialist Alfonso Brescia, specifically requested music in the style of Shaft, the iconic film that defined that sound in 1971. Though seemingly simple, Tema di Susie? is a perfect example of Alessandroni's style -- in particular his unique ability to effortlessly blend groove and melody, funk and feeling, into one musical piece. So, Reloved invited different artists with different backgrounds, influences and approaches to bring their individual take on this elegant and now timeless tune. Neapolitan duo Fratelli Malibu have taken Alessandroni's melodic theme and woven it into a mesmerizing tapestry of rhythmic beats, world percussion and ethereal atmospheres. Drawing inspiration from funk/Afrobeat, synth-pop and Italo-disco, they've conjured a psychedelic-tinged, afro-cosmic groove that's bound to transport you to another dimension. As the music unfolds, you'll feel like you've stepped into a vibrant, fantasy world. The breaks, outro, and intro are woven with a psychedelic thread that leaves you yearning to return once the final note fades away. And that's not all -- they've injected an irresistible pop sensibility into the track with the use of drum machines and synths. The result? A rework that not only amplifies the dreaminess of the original but also seamlessly marries the past with the future. Reloved loves the track so much that they decided to double the fun with a vocal retouch version, courtesy of the Italian funk/soul collective Banda Maje. Their vocalists, Chiara Della Monica and Cristina Cafiero, elegantly infuse cinematic and Balearic vibes into the mix, paying a wonderful homage to Fratelli Malibu's exquisite arrangement."

ALESSANDRONI, ALESSANDRO Don't Give Up/Tema Di Susie 7"
"Tema di Susie is one of the main themes from the soundtrack composed by Alessandro Alessandroni for the 1976 Italian noir Sangue di sbirro, known in English as Blood and Bullets, as well as Knell, Bloody Avenger. So, Reloved invited different artists with different backgrounds, influences and approaches to bring their individual take on this elegant and now timeless tune. With his characteristic style, enigmatic French producer Mounika has spun Alessandroni's dreamy melody into a remix that resonates with the soul. Right from the first note, Mounika sets the stage for an uplifting journey. The track's opening, with its hauntingly isolated piano, lays the foundation for what's to come. As the music swells, you'll feel an irresistible surge of positivity and motivation, culminating in a joyous crescendo that celebrates the heart of the composition. Along the way, he weaves in elements that are reminiscent of the French touch sound and the bold beats of the late '90s, all while steering clear of overpowering rhythms or any hint of nostalgic retro vibes. What emerges is a remix that's nothing short of a breath of fresh air. It's the kind of music that not only makes you move but stirs something deep within. Mounika's touch is like a painter's brush, layering sonic texture and dynamics to bring new emotional depth to Alessandroni's masterpiece. The Reloved series is co-curated with fellow independent label Little Beat More."

UMILIANI, PIERO A Tempo Di Jazz LP
Sonor Music Editions presents A Tempo Di Jazz by Piero Umiliani. This lost gem captures the formative years of modern jazz in late 1950s Italy. Alongside the legendary Basso-Valdambrini recordings in the early 1960s, as well as the early years of Piero Umiliani's long and prolific career as a composer with over 190 soundtracks, 40 library albums, and 35 TV title themes recorded. A Tempo Di Jazz includes seven original compositions by Piero Umiliani recorded in 1959. Here, at the age of 33, he lays a perfect ground with himself as a pianist, accompanied by some of the best Italian soloists at the time: Marcello Boschi on alto saxophone and flute, Ivan Vandor on tenor saxophone, Peppe Carta on bass, and the American trombonist Bill Gilmore. With plenty of room for improvisation, the sextet fuses big band moods with West Coast experimentation of Latin American rhythms and modern jazz ballads that sit perfectly between his soundtracks for the films I Soliti Ignoti (Big Deal on Madonna Street) from the same year that attained him international recognition, and his masterpiece Smog (featuring Chet Baker and Helen Merrill) from 1962. The music has carefully been transferred and remastered from the original mono master tapes, and mono lacquer cut by Jukka Sarap?? at Timmion Cutting.

WOODS, CAROL Out Of The Woods LP
Restocked; last copies, reduced price. Soulgramma present a reissue of Carol Woods's Out Of The Woods, originally released in 1971. Carol Woods was born in Jamaica, New York in 1943. She was deeply influenced by her grandfather, a Pentecostal minister, and her mother Marion Jones, which led her to become lead singer with the local church choir. A necessary soulful album long out of print. Recorded in London and published on Ember (British label formed in the early 1960s by club owner and promoter Jeffrey S. Kruger, owner of the Flamingo Club, London) in 1971, Out Of The Woods is still a shiny gem on its own. The four tracks on her singles were included and the rhythm section backing tracks for the remainder were put down by Beau Ray Fleming (well known for his studio work with Mandrill) in New York. Ember's producer, Mike Berry, then added Carol's vocals and the horn section. Woods's vocals are full and rich and the record has a sort of post-Supremes vibe with an obvious seventies approach. Since that time Carol has found success in stage musicals, such as One Mo Time where she took over the role of Big Bertha Williams, the hard drinking vaudeville star. She has also appeared in movies, including Eddie Murphy Raw (1987) where she played Eddie's aunt. Fully licensed. 180 gram vinyl.

POPP Laya (Transparent Vinyl) LP
With seemingly effortless precision and a sense for the imperfect, Popp merges ambient, third stream and minimal music on his debut album Laya. The title derives from the Sanskrit language and signifies a place of rest and mental inactivity. In the spring of 2019, Popp created these eight tracks from hours of improvisation in his own studio. The moments thus captured were then enriched with more sounds and effects to add layers and shed the manually played percussion of all its earthliness. The result is an album of concealed complexity and unadorned beauty. Raised on an old farm in rural Bavaria, Simon Popp started playing the drums at the age of nine. During his studies at the Academy of Music and Theatre in Munich, he extensively studied African music from countries like Togo, Ghana, and Benin where rhythm is central to culture. On his quest for this world's sounds, Popp collected and recorded a wide variety of drums and other instruments, adding to the placelessness of Laya. 2023 reissue. Transparent vinyl.

FERRARI, BRUNHILD Exterieur-jour LP
"After her stunning collaborations with Vincent Royer (for Mode Records), Jim O'Rourke, and Christoph Heemann (both for Oren Ambarchi's Black Truffle Records) Brunhild Ferrari returns to the scene with this new solo album. Ext?rieur-jour is comprised of two previously unreleased compositions, one being the title track the album is named after and the other 'Le Piano Englouti (version original).' Ext?rieur-jour translates to 'Outside Day,' and indicates an instruction for a film scene, a piece of cin?ma pour l'oreille, a movie for the ears. It was recorded at Luc Ferrari's Atelier Post Billig in January and February 2014. 'Le Piano Englouti' ('The Sunken Piano'), another electroacoustic composition which was realized over a period of fourteen years between 1996 and 2010, also brings forth cinematic elements with sound sources recorded in places as diverse as a Greek island by the noisy Agean Sea, a Pachinko place and a quiet island in Japan. It comes across as a meditation on the loss and reappearance of memory and silence. The graphics for the album sleeve were created by the late Wolfgang Meyer Tormin, artist and composer and also father of Brunhild Ferrari. The album was mastered for vinyl from the original source by Jim O'Rourke."

Carefully composed textures as subtle as the changes of light in the forbidden zone in Andrei Tarkovsky's Stalker weave in and out of each other to make for a hypnotic ride. The cover and label photos were taken by Sigtryggur Berg Sigmarsson. Mastered for vinyl by Jim O'Rourke."

ONEPOINTWO Cycles LP
"Cycles is a concept which is deeply intertwined with everyday life, both on a micro and macro level. They manifest in various natural, biological and societal processes, influencing our daily routines, behaviors and the world around us. Unconventional rhythms and time signatures, complex patterns, evolving modulations and shifting textures were created and used to present it (Cycles) as an integral part of our existence, shaping how we navigate to the world, make decisions and experience the passage of time..." Kostas Giazlas (Onepointwo). Kostas hails from Thessaloniki, Greece, and describes himself as a keen record collector, who is "always trying to emulate a musical journey into space, time, memories and frequencies". With influences ranging from late '50s electronic experimental sounds, motorik krautrock bands, lush shoegaze melodies and modern electronica, Onepointwo seeks to crystallize this musical backdrop via judicious use of minimal arrangements, abstract and distorted shortwave radio signals, dystopian soundscapes made up of both digital and analogue sources, all punctuated with heavily affected percussive sounds.

CORTINA PROTOCOL, THE The Cortina Protocol (Color Vinyl) LP
Color LP version. The Cortina Protocol is the sound of these images. Recorded in three days to tape at The Cowshed Studios in North London in early 2021 the album wiretaps the colder veins of '60s and '70s crime soundtracks, weaving tense cinematic atmospheres, hypnotic kraut-isms, and swirling psychedelic funk. Initially influenced by the widescreen aesthetics of Roy Budd, Heliocentrics, John Cameron, Tortoise, DJ Krush, Can, and 23 Skidoo, the album was spontaneously composed, taking many unexpected paths yet creating a cohesive aesthetic throughout. Formed in 2021 by Matthew Rozeik from London experimental duo Necro Deathmort, The Cortina Protocol explores the darker side of cinematic noir. Featuring a fluid cast of like-minded musicians, their debut self-titled album is the first of many deep explorations.

KILADZE'S JAZZ CHORAL, ALEKSANDRE Aleksandre Kiladze's Jazz Choral LP
As its maiden release, Tbilisi Records presents the recordings by one of the essential Georgian jazz formations of the 1980s. Alexandre Kiladze's Jazz Choral, formed in 1985, featured an impressive lineup of 11 vocalists complemented by a full band. Alongside standards, the ensemble's material contained many outstanding, stylistically versatile originals lushly arranged into the layered vocal harmonies juxtaposed against the band's tuneful, dynamic play. The polyphony Jazz Choral displays draws equally from Georgian folklore and vocal jazz band tradition. This singular fusion of these two culturally distinct elements creates a remarkable listening experience often emulated by newer Georgian jazz formations thereafter.

SANO, AKHIRA Far More Decentralized LP
Following on from recent works for 12k, The Trilogy Tapes, and Important, Far More Decentralized is a new collection of subtle, enchanting pieces from Tokyo-based sound and visual artist Akhira Sano. Working with electronic, instrumental, and concrete sounds, he crafts immersive assemblages of long overlapping tones and blurred resonance, cut through with textural crunch and hiss. The resonant bell-like tones of opener "Kouai" invite the listener in, calling up the warm sound palette of ambient classics like Hiroshi Yoshimura's Music for Nine Postcards, but leaving any sense of compositional anchor behind for a free-floating harmonic drift. Woven through this seductive tonal cloud is a wavering stream of white noise and tactile pops, its textural grit threatening to derail the calmly reflective pool of pitched sounds, but never quite doing so. Each of these seven pieces occupies a similarly ruminative harmonic space while possessing its own identity. On "Neow," lush tonal swells form around fragmented samples, touching on the techniques of early 2000s glitch artists like Ekkehard Ehlers. "Orbv" is particularly subtle in its combination of rippling back-masked tonal wash, almost subliminal suggestions of field recordings, and distant traces of raw electronic interference, as if a Toshimaru Nakamura recording is playing through an open window across the road. 'Margin' weaves together a skein of wistful slow-motion melodies while untraceable, resonant clinks and ambiguous static washes rise gradually to the surface. In comparison to his recent Phase Contrast for Recollection on 12k, recognizable instrumental sounds are a rarity here, yet a hand-played feeling is present throughout. On "Teens," filtered electric guitar tones reminiscent of the melancholic miniatures of Andrew Chalk float over aqueous burbles, bringing the album to a magisterial close. In the crowded field of contemporary electronic music tending toward ambience, Sano is a distinctive voice. Like his elegant abstract paintings, here seemingly static surfaces of unhurried calm reveal rich interior worlds of subtle activity and gentle chaos. Where much contemporary ambient music aims for an almost stifling cleanliness of tone, Sano breathes life into Far More Decentralized through the acceptance of imperfection, accident, and rough edges.

MICROSTORIA init ding + _snd (Remastered) 2LP
"Few records have weathered the fast-moving, fickle trends in electronic music like those of Microstoria. The duo brings together two of the most prescient, playful minds in the German electronic underground -- Jan St. Werner (Mouse on Mars) and Markus Popp (Oval). Their albums as Microstoria are considered foundational texts in ambient music while equally sounding just as cutting-edge now as on their initial release. Continually cropping up in 'best of' lists from the likes of Pitchfork and FACT while finding new fans through remixes by Jim O'Rouke and Stereolab. After being long out of print and coveted by collectors, the duo's cult classic albums init ding and _snd now receive the expanded reissue treatment as a double LP, featuring remixed sleeve artwork based on the original designs and a full remaster of each by engineer Rashad Becker. Microstoria's first outing init ding (1995) captures the thrilling, anarchic energy of Germany's experimental underground in the '90s, rendered in beautifully understated atmospheres. In those early studio sessions, Popp and Werner would cycle through synthesizer patches and effects settings while playing, sounds glitching and taking on new shapes with each turn to create moments of genuine surprise. Throughout the album the duo wrest paradoxically organic sounds from digital instruments, with everything from bird-like calls to aqueous washes of bass or fizzing strings that crest like rolling waves of warm analog thrum. The duo's sophomore album _snd (1996) provided a subtle refinement of those earlier recordings, stripping back the dense layers of texture to play with space and tension, with an even greater contrast between light and dark. The album finds comfort in colder, deliberately digital soundscapes -- the sound of neon lights illuminating the empty concrete of the city at night, or dial-up router glitch bathed in the warming glow of monitor screens. This is no mere wallpaper music, but living, breathing ecosystems of sound teeming with detail and tangible feeling. Nearly 30 years on from their original release, both init ding and _snd still offer thrilling new revelations with every listen. Much like the nature of their creation, these are records that reward deep listening. The expanded reissue of these two classic albums highlights their enduring influence and uncanny genius, standing essential titles from two artists still shaping the landscape of contemporary music today."

EYE FLYS Eye Flys CD
"Eye Flys are a quintessential Philadelphian band whose aggressive brand of noise rock is leading a wave of bands that harken back to classic era AmRep noise rock. Their rage is palpable and their wit is biting. Eye Flys are unsparingly heavy, driven by the colossal rhythm section of bassist Kevin Bernsten and drummer Patrick Forrest. Vocalist/guitarist Jake Smith delivers sharp humor with a healthy dose of venom and bile with each bestial growl while his dirty riffs roar at you. Recorded by Bernsten at his own Developing Nations studio (Full of Hell, Integrity, Jarhead Fertilizer) and J Robbins' The Magpie Cage, the band's self-titled album features artwork drawn by artist and drummer John Herndon (Tortoise), known for his singular drawings and his band's iconic TNT cover. Eye Flys wades deeper into the muck and mire of modern living to take an unflinching look at the horrors of late-stage capitalism and offer a caustic remedy for its ravages. Expanding on their bludgeoning debut Tub of Lard, Eye Flys is lean and aggressive, fast and unforgiving. Trepanation Summer's ferocious riffs bore directly into the skull, mimicking the crude pressure release of the ancient surgical process of the same name, Smith crying to 'release the pressure' from within a wall of feedback. 'Sleep Forever' throws down a thrashing, infernal groove, demolishing all in its path as Smith's craggy guitar figures rise like toxic smoke from the devastation. 'Draining Pus' revels in septic sludge, while 'Bananarchy Zoo' manages to strip things down to an even more lean and incisive realization of the trio's punishing sonic palette, in an exploration of Smith's love/hate relationship with his Florida roots. Eye Flys offers a reassuring reminder that you haven't gone mad and you're not alone -- that weird and heavy music is still here as a respite from the madness of modern living and an outlet for righteous rage."

SETIEN, ELENA Moonlit Reveries CD
"Multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Elena Seti?n uses her multi octave vocal range and delicate arrangements to create a universe where dream worlds converge with reality. Seti?n's masterfully allegorical songs are both emotionally immediate and provoking. A musician's musician, Seti?n has drawn collaborators from far and wide, from her improvisational duo Little Red Suitcase to more recent collaborations with Steve Gunn, Mary Lattimore, and fellow Basque musicians Xabier Erkizia and Grande Days. For Moonlit Reveries, a hallucinatory promenade of mood and rhythm, Seti?n is joined by renowned drummer/percussionist Glenn Kotche of Wilco. At the core of Moonlit Reveries is the inspiration that Seti?n and Kotche found in one another. The two met while Kotche was touring Spain with Wilco, Kotche having been a fan of Seti?n's 2022 album Unfamiliar Minds. Immediately the two started discussing collaboration which Seti?n began by using a series of unique drum patterns from Kotche's 'A Beat A Week' series as the basis for tracks like 'Surfacing' and 'Asking.' Kotche then sent in fresh drum takes for select pieces that embellished the frameworks set by Seti?n. The songs of Moonlit Reveries also make use of more guitar than Seti?n previously had ever explored, which Seti?n traces back to Steve Gunn introducing her to the music of Bridget St. John. Moonlit Reveries is an embrace of wonder, an ode to the alluring beauty, and glow of dream states. For Seti?n, dreams are to be appreciated. The compositions are speckled with otherworldly embellishments, from ghostly harpsichords to cavernous echoes to reverberating kalimba. Title track 'Moonlit Reveries' revels in a playful mystique, Seti?n's words carried by the wind across the night's sky. 'Mothers' captures the hopeful embrace of parenthood, letting go- and that cycle of life, was written in the wake of Low's Mimi Parker's premature death. A mother and artist herself, Seti?n was deeply saddened by the loss while drawing strength from what Parker accomplished in her short time. The winner of several Basque music awards, Elena Seti?n's beautiful voice, creative arrangements, and both improvisational and compositional experience make for sophisticated songs with singular textural approaches. Her otherworldly sounds are perfectly complimented by Kotche's light and agile syncopations throughout."

VA Chicas: Spanish Female Singers 1962-1974 2LP
2024 repress. Gatefold 2LP version. Vampisoul presents a compilation of Spanish girl groups circa 1962-1974. Spanish girl pop made itself present when it was necessary. Oblivious to the scarcity of exciting sounds that late-Francoist Spain offered them, the Spanish girls disregarded conventions and overcame all barriers and suspicions without letting the latest fashionable hairdo get ruined. In those doubtful years during which, apart from copla, any other music style was considered highly suspicious, the leading girls didn't hesitate and abandoned themselves to the whole musical range, both local and international, at their disposal. Despite the difficulties, and there were many, the incipient permeability of Spanish politics of the time played its part and, from 1963 onwards, female ye-y? became an absolute reality that shook the Spanish society of the period. A true salvation, a social panacea, that's what female ye-y? was in 1960s Spain, a small revolution of customs dressed in a mini-skirt and playing at 45 rpm. In the wake of its charm, modernity and intrinsically female character, everyone in Spain became ye-y? and the social landscape gained freedom following the trail left by the girls. Thanks to it, girls were subsequently able to take part in the beat, garage, soul, psychedelia and prog scenes as well. For a while now, various compilations have been released in Spain documenting styles, scenes and artists belonging to such happening decades (creatively speaking) as the '50s, '60s and '70s, and nevertheless, there hasn't been one featuring only female contributions to the cause. When compiling ?Chicas!, all genres were considered: Latin, rock & roll, twist, ye-y?, beat, garage, rhythm & blues, soul, etc. Secondly, apart from celebrating all the shining artists featured here, there are also a great number of recordings released on the Catalan label, Belter. Discover once again for the first time the unbelievable legacy of the Belter factory as well as these revolutionary women. BATAAN, JOE Call My Name LP
2024 restock. "This whole project grew out of a song called 'Cycles Of You', which I had written around 2000-2001 with the guitarist and bassist of my band at the time, Easy. The chord progression and vocal melody really reminded me of Joe Bataan, and it occurred to me that it wouldn't be impossible to get him into the studio to do a guest vocal if we ever recorded it. I had met Bataan a few years before at Nuyorican Poets Cafe in my neighborhood. Around this time Bataan was playing out again, so I went to the show to see him and find out if he'd be interested in doing some vocals with us. He was agreeable, so we decided to turn it into a Joe Bataan session and do 'Cycles Of You'. When I got the opportunity from Vampisoul to do a full album, I was hoping Bataan and I could write some songs together, but our schedules proved tough to coordinate. I figured the best way to go about it was to do most of the work and just have him come sing on it. The rhythm section was a band called TransLove Airways that I formed in 2002. To this core group I added pieces from a few other local bands: The Middle Initials, who are a great Temptations/Main Ingredient-style vocal group, and members of an incredible Latin band called Grupo Latin Vibe, who were responsible for almost all the percussion and the vibraphone solo on 'I'm The Fool Pt. 2'. There was also some fine trombone playing by Aaron Johnson of Antibalas and great flute work by Neal Sugarman and my cousin Sonny. Preparing for Call My Name, I listened to a lot of different records from the mid to late '70s. It has now been over ten years since the completion of this record, and so much has changed. The Call My Name sessions took place when Daptone had just moved to Bushwick, its now-famous current location. Gabe Roth was my first call whenever I had any recording to do. He was yet to become the legendary figure at the center of the Daptone/Truth & Soul universe. He was just a humble guy with an incredible talent and an impeccable ear who made authentic sounding records with inexpensive analog gear." -- Daniel Coll?s, producer of Call My Name

MUCCI, SKARRA Perfect Timing CD
Skarra Mucci is a Jamaican reggae and dancehall artist born in Kingston. Known as the "Dancehall President", his career counts seven solo albums, including the essential Return of the Raggamuffin (2012) and countless classics and cult collaborations, such as the hit "My Sound" from the album Greater Than Great (2014) which exceeds 15 million cumulative streams and the critically acclaimed album Dancehall President (2016) with its tour of more than 100 dates around the world, from Mexico to China. Five years after the release of The One Love Family (2018), this essential figure of Jamaican music, with his versatile flow and recognizable voice, announces a new studio album with multiple influences Perfect Timing. Perfect Timing is an ode to reggae of all eras, full of nods to the Sound System culture, from its origins to the present day. From the choice of the featurings to that of the beats, nothing is left to chance to offer us a journey through the highlights of this rich culture which has never ceased to evolve, without any period being left behind. Accustomed to albums teeming with successful collaborations, Perfect Timing is obviously no exception. In particular, on the title "Street Dance," are the essential French producers of L'Entourloop, with whom he released the very successful EP Golden Nuggets. Jamaican legend Johnny Osbourne also takes part in the celebration offering a version of his '80s classic "What A La La," here performed by French riddim maker specialized in digital reggae, Manudigital. Skarra Mucci continues his exploration of various styles and influences with the very groovy "Dancehall," produced by the Dub Akom band. There is also the massive "Who Fool Them," a UK stepper track produced by Evidence Music, as long as the future dancehall classic "Rappa Pam Pam," and the mystic "Misty Babylon" in a much more roots reggae register.
