LA FEMME Mystere 2LP
2024 repress. French pop connoisseurs La Femme present Myst?re. La Femme have made a huge mark on modern Paris's cultural landscape, with the two sides of the city - the glamour and the grit - ingrained in their music. Since the release of their debut album, Psycho Tropical Berlin (BORNBAD 051LP, 2013), their rise has only gained momentum with fans including directors Jacques Audiard and Romain Gavras to legends Jean Michel Jarre and Hedi Slimane. Returning with a more psychedelic sound and guest vocalists that slice through the starkest of electro beats, Myst?re sees La Femme celebrating their wonderful city. From the chattering t?te-?-t?te heard on "Conversations Nocturnes" to the throbbing disco beat of "SSD", a direct reference to the pulsing nightlife hotspot and multi-cultural district Strasbourg Saint Denis where the band is based. Myst?re's true intrigue however, lies in La Femme's enigmatic questioning of falling in and out of love. A compendium of short stories describing loves and losses, each song breaks down language barriers through an inventive and astute knack for melody. The elation of a passionate encounter is captured on the ricocheting electronics of "Tatiana", the melancholic acoustic guitar echoes in "Le Vide Est Ton Nouveau Prenom" and the sorrow of a war-torn couple in "Psyzook". Whether delicate or drenched in dirty disco, the impact of Cl?mence, Marlon and Sacha's gothic mantras mixed with the guest vocal talent of Clara Luciani, Jane Peynot, Naomi Greene, Mathilde Marli?re, Angela Hureau, Battista Acquaviva and Sarah Ben Abdallah is perhaps where La Femme's true meaning can be found. Sacha on his band's all-inclusive philosophy: "We don't like the idea of having a leader or a chief: everyone brings to the band what they can and want." Recorded between a castle in Brittany and a Paris basement before being finished up with Sonny Diperri (Animal Collective) in LA, Myst?re once again sees backgrounds blurred and worlds collide. The band's chic retro-futurist surf-pop sound possesses the same dose of glamorous punk stomp as before, but this time around it's layered with an elegant fusion of influences from Ennio Morricone, Marie Et Les Garcons's disco-rock touch and the lysergic romanticism of The Velvet Underground. Through increased use of strings and further exploration of sound, Myst?re also incorporates the band's new love of oriental sounds, Turkish disco, Tuareg blues, medieval psychedelia to mainstays Brian Eno and Pink Floyd.

VA A Moi La Liberte: Early Electronic Rai - Algerie 1983-1990 2LP
2024 restock; double LP version. Includes six-page booklet; includes download code. Delving into the deepest recesses of ra?, this compilation serves as a tribute to its roaring years, but also as a rejuvenation of the genre in its sulphureous, subterranean version. It seemed like a good idea to dig into nearly untraceable cassettes, thus confirming it's in the oldest of Oranese pots that the very best of ra? is to be found. Just 50 years ago, no one would have believed even a bit in a genre seemingly bound to forever turn round and round in its native Oran, laying low in one of its many coastal road clubs. In these underground venues, singers -- backed up by a minimalist orchestration for lack of space -- would move their audience to laughs and tears, sobbing in a beer or chuckling down (dry) whisky. Through the pre- and post-independence years, from 1950 to 1970, ra? urbanized itself, with a generation growing up between asphalt and concrete to the sound of traditional flute, but also and mostly listening to twist, French vari?t? and rock music. Their names were Bouta?ba S'ghir, Messaoud Bellemou, Groupe El Azhar, Youn?s Benfissa, or Zergui, and they passed on their collection of songs to the incoming "Chebs" -- breathing a second youth into them. Oran, the capital of West-Algeria, will be at the heart of this rejuvenation. Overshadowed to the West by the bare mountain of A?dour, a foot set onto a beautiful bay and the other on a long dried out wadi, covered up with buildings since, Oran must be the most European of Algerian towns -- regardless of its kasbah, its sanctuary built in 1793 under the reign of the Bey Mohammed ben Othman and devoted to Sidi El Houari, the city's patron saint, and praised in many a ra? song, and its Pacha 18th century mosque built in memory of the displaced Spaniards of 1492. Oran is blessed with the sea and pine forests all around and above it, towards Sana Cruz. It is rich with Hispanic, Andalusian, Turkish, Arab-Berber and French influences. A cosmopolitanism is very much part of the city's largely jovial nature. Some head for the open-air theater, renamed Cheb Hasni in honor of the creator of love ra?, killed on September the 29th, 1994. Others take over restaurants before taking it all out on the dancefloor of one of the many clubs dotted along the coastal road. Features Cheb Hindi, Houari Benchenet, Chab Mohamed Sghir, Chaba Fadila, Cheb Tahar, Cheb Djalal, Benchenet, Cheb Kader, Chab Hamouda, Cheb Khaled "Schir", Nordine Sta?fi, Chaba Amel, Chaba Malika Meddah, and Tchier Abdelgani.

HELDON Electronique Guerilla (Heldon I) (50th Anniversary Edition) LP
In 1973, 22-year-old Richard Pinhas was well on his way to becoming a full-time philosopher. He had almost finished his Ph.D and begun teaching at the University of Paris. But he also had a hobby: writing music and recording it himself. When he submitted a few tracks to British label E.G. (home of King Crimson and Roxy Music), the imprint was interested, but Pinhas was frustrated to find out he'd have to wait a year for them to release anything. So Pinhas put out his first album on his own label, Disjuncta. He called the project Heldon (from a location in Norman Spinrad's 1972 sci-fi novel The Iron Dream). It might have been the first self-released rock record in France. Most of Electronique Guerilla was made by Pinhas alone, but "Ouais, Marchais, Mieux Qu'en 68" featured five collaborators, including one of his mentors, Gilles Deleuze. Over winding guitars and pointed percussion, the French philosopher reads lyrics taken from Friedrich Nietzsche's The Voyager and His Shadow. Despite being self-released -- with Pinhas himself delivering some stock directly to record stores -- Electronique Guerilla quickly sold over 19,000 copies. That convinced Pinhas he should make and release more music by himself -- but he would have little time for philosophy. It's a choice he's stuck to for four decades, and the fiery Electronique Guerilla provided a potent spark.

BARTOS, KARL The Cabinet Of Dr. Caligari CD
Narrative film music and sound design for Robert Wiene's classic 1920 psychological thriller. Digitally restored in 4K by the Friedrich-Wilhelm-Murnau-Foundation. Musician and writer Karl Bartos has long been admirer of Weimar-era culture. During his time in Kraftwerk, he helped create the stunning track Metropolis, directly inspired by a band viewing of the classic 1927 Fritz Lang film of the same name. The original orchestral music composed for The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari by Giuseppe Becce had long been lost and in 2005, after watching the film, Bartos imagined what it would be like to create an entirely new one in the 21st Century in his home studios in Hamburg. Now with crystal clear images, digitally restored by the Friedrich-Wilhelm Murnau-Foundation, the film is visually the best quality it has ever been, and now, with Bartos' soundtrack, there is impressive sound to go with the haunting vision. For the task, Bartos ransacked his own library of musical compositions, recreating pieces he had written as a young classical musician in his pre-Kraftwerk days whilst creating new sounds, melodies and textures. The intention was not simply to write a film score per se. This was to be an immersive listening experience with special sound effects to match the action as the listener enters the film as both spectator and participant. A creaking door, footsteps on gravel, the turning of pages in a ledger, a half-heard fragment of dialogue are seamlessly synchronized to the action on screen. The listener can hear melodies that lie within the tradition of the Baroque Age of Bach, the early Romanticism of Mozart, the dissonance of Schoenberg, the unsettling metric play of Stravinsky and the harshly dramatic repetitions of Philip Glass. From outside of the classical tradition there is the folklorist bricolage of the fairground barrel organ tempered playfully by some psychedelic backwards musique concrete along with some melodies which would not have been out of place on a Kraftwerk album from the classic era. All the time the listener is on a journey, sounds move in and out, music weaves and entwines, the soundscape is immersive and intoxicatingly rich.

VA Dots And Pearls 8 2LP
From minimalistic grooves and melodic house to dark techno and even EBM influences back to playful tunes for the heart, 2024's Dots And Pearls impresses with its broad spectrum. Kyivian producer JOSS breaks the first ground with "Assessing". A sweet opener that immediately reveals its emotional but happy core. Emanuel Satie joins with a groovy tom rhythm complemented by a heavenly and angelic choir that adds a touch of ethereal beauty to the composition. Denis Horvat and Skarn have joined forces to create an electrifying track titled "Triii" that ventures into a realm of edginess and artistry. The following collaboration between A?CRAM and Ramsey Neville in their track "Brooklyn Structure" takes you through the depths of NYC's compressed techno. Sequences morph throughout the track's progression, seamlessly transitioning between layers of sound and adding a sense of intrigue to the overall arrangement. "Antidot" is an electrifying peak-time thriller by Alex Bau, a monstrous techno track that commands attention and ignites the dancefloor with its wicked bassline and explosive energy. As you reach the third part of the compilation, Redshape's "Ghost Story" cuts the surface. The track delves into a realm of tales and mysteries through mesmerizing and enthralling soundscapes. Despite its haunting undertones, "Ghost Story" manages to maintain an untroubled vibe, striking a balance between a mysterious ambiance and a lively spirit. "Year Zero" blends elements of the characteristic Raxon sound with a fresh and futuristic twist, resulting in an unusual and excellent addition to his discography. Harald Bj?rk rings down the curtain on Dots And Pearls 8. From the very beginning, "Aluco" reveals an atmosphere shrouded in darkness, inviting listeners to embark on a hero's journey. Intricate beats pulsate with a magnetic allure, drawing you into the heart of the music.

HARDINGE AND DAVID ZUCKERMAN, MAYA Penny Original Soundtrack LP
Penny is a feature documentary directed by Maya Hardinge. It follows the life of Penny from her time as a teenager living in Uckfield (UK) to Germany and overland by truck in the 1970s through Iran, Pakistan and Afghanistan, and full circle years later back to her home town. The soundtrack, like the film, is a collage, composed of sounds and events depicting Penny's journey. While the recently released cassette on woodfordhalse foregrounds Penny's voice by incorporating generous amounts of dialogue into the music, this LP offers a companion piece that presents Penny from a completely different perspective, focusing entirely on the music, as composed by Maya Hardinge and David Zuckerman. The album is orchestrated as a pastiche of short vignettes that shift effortlessly between whimsy and darkness, much in the spirit of the great new wave Czech cinema soundtracks such as Valarie And Her Week Of Wonders, and Daisies. These compositions convey an emotional pallet that tells penny's story in a manner that lies beyond words. Album comes with full color insert.

DEJING Dejing LP
Beautiful home-recorded solo jams from NYC underground music lifer recording as Dejing. Squeezing an array of sticky, soupy, heavily phased textures from a spartan setup (a guitar, keyboard and sampler), Dejing conjures a beguiling mix of simultaneously lumbering and buoyant rhythms and melodies, like transmissions from an oddly benevolent fever dream. It's a shapeshifting 40 minutes, at times sounding like a funereal Durutti Column outtake fed through a fried speaker at the bottom of a swimming pool, at others like a flickering, off-hours CRT TV broadcast of celestial melodies oscillating in a quiet storm of crackle and hiss. Limited vinyl pressing, don't sleep on this one.

KORINE, HARMONY A Crack-Up at the Race Riots Book
2024 reprint. "'It's about a race war and it happens in Florida. And the Jewish people sit in trees. And the black people are run by M.C. Hammer. And the whites are run by Vanilla Ice. I wanted to write the Great American Choose Your Own Adventure novel.' -- Harmony Korine, addressing a national television audience, 10/17/97. Back in print from Harmony Korine, A Crack-Up at the Race Riots was originally published by Mainstreet/Doubleday in 1998. Korine's first novel presents fragments of a portrait in multimedia: print, photographs, drawings, news clippings, handwriting, a poem, attempted diagrams, clip art -- but mostly text, including hard-luck stories, off-and-on-color jokes, scriptscraps, found letters, free rhymes, drug flashbacks and other missing scenes, exploring the world of show-biz with fingers prying in the cracks and feet set lightly in the black humours of the real ol' world. A Crack-Up at the Race Riots also includes some other semi/attempted/quasi lists/scripts, a few letters from Tupac and a set of eleven suicide notes with room included for your signature. So that's the book in a nutshell. I don't know, maybe you had to be there. But it's back in print, so be there now, what the fuck?" Soft cover, 172 pages. List price: $18.95.

AMBARCHI/JOHAN BERTHLING/ANDREAS WERLIIN, OREN Ghosted LP
2024 repress. "It was early in 2019 -- no, November 2018! -- that Oren Ambarchi, Johan Berthling and Andreas Werliin met at Studio Rymden, in a quiet, pretty suburban district of Stockholm, to make the music that became Ghosted. They can't remember exactly when it was made because that time -- the when and where that it was recorded -- doesn't really matter anymore. Now the music of Ghosted exists in the intention of a shared moment of playing, a clearly delineated time, put forth with a steady flow of small details on bass, guitar and drums, in a remarkable display of rhythmic flexibility within a minimal framework. Oren and Johan have met many times onstage and off since 2003, with several duo recordings to their credit, as well as additional encounters in the group Fire! with Mats Gustafsson and drummer Andreas Werliin. A while back, Oren and Johan decided to reconvene in the studio for a furthering of the thought process that they'd come to on the second Ambarchi/Berthling collaboration, 2015's Tongue Tied. As Andreas had mixed that session, it felt right to have him on kit -- he'd already been intimately involved in the process. The music they all play together in Fire! is, to put it mildly, loud. This session, they sensed an opportunity to explore different dynamics -- to tap, perhaps, a shared inner ECM space. Studio Rymden sits on an upper floor of the building it's located in, and the light coming through the windows was pleasant on that day. They set up, picked out some amps (including the best-sounding Leslie speaker Oren's ever heard) and got started. Rooting in the rich tonality and repeating figures of Johan's acoustic (and sometimes electric) bass, the four tracks that make up Ghosted act as variations on a theme, unspooling continuously over the course of 39 minutes with the terse flow of krautrock jams -- closely observed percussive riffs and repetitions that build continuously with subtle shifts as they move forward, with the small details flying expansively in and out across the stereo spectrum. Oren's guitar often sounds with an organ-like tone, with notes of fire and glass wafting out over the percolation and permutation in Johan and Andreas' rhythms..."

TEKLA PETERSON Mine to Give Cassette
"Tekla Peterson is the new pop-oriented solo project helmed by Wisconsin's Taralie Peterson. Peterson has been a member of Spires That In the Sunset Rise since their founding in 2001. Most recently a duo with Ka Baird, Spires has a sound that began deeply rooted in underground folk music, but evolved into a much more overtly jazzoid space. We released their 2017 collaboration LP with Chicago percussionist Michael Zerang, Illinois Glossalia (FTR 285LP). But Peterson has always had solo projects going. First she had Tar Pet, an exceedingly fine exploration of so-called wyrd folk. Later there was more avant/jazz-oriented, Louise Bock, with whom we did a 2017 solo LP, Repetitives in Illocality (FTR 374LP) and 2021's All Summer Long Is Gone (FTR 382LP) -- a duo album with string wizard, Pat 'PG Six' Gubler. More recently we have been introduced to a 'pop' persona, Tekla Peterson, who debuted with a 2022 cassette called Heart Press. Heart Press was created in reaction to the end of a long personal relationship, and is a cool, uneasy pairing of contempo-pop readymades and lyrics questioning some foundational aspects of romance. Mine to Give is Tekla's similarly-styled, though constantly evolving, sophomore effort. Assisted by Rob Jacobs on bass and beats, Peterson's vocals, keys, bass and sax are up front at all times, and do a massively fine job defining a musical/emotional space that is simultaneously pop-oriented and avant-garde. The songs and arrangements often have a surface feel akin to something you'd hear on commercial radio, but there are lots of strange experimental textures and techniques that enliven, enrich and transform the material into something that is transcendently 'other.' Parts sound a bit like what I imagine Taylor Swift has going. Inside those walls you'll hear echoes of acid folk, avant-jazz and post-industrial compositions, but only if you pay careful attention. As with other female artists who began their journey in the sub-underground and kept going (Natalie Mering's Weyes Blood, Meg Remy's U.S. Girls), Peterson creates deeply coded music with enough surface sheen to keep slow pokes from ever perceiving what's going on in the depths. The spelunker's pay-off. Great stuff." --Byron Coley, 2024

COTTON, ALISON Engelchen LP
"Engelchen" literally translates as "little angels," and for many in the febrile, dangerous era of the 1930s in Nazi-occupied Europe, as they wrote letters to arrange their paths out of danger as refugees, these were Ida and Louise Cook. Ida and Louise spent much of their early years in Sunderland, and in adulthood lived in a suburb of London with their parents. They were enormous fans of opera, and led relatively quiet and unfussy lives, Ida working for the civil service as a secretary and Louise as a writer of Mills & Boon romances under a pseudonym. Yet secretly these resourceful and eccentric women were using their musical obsessions as a means to help dozens of refugees escape with their lives. Their secretive heroics now almost beggar belief, and when Alison Cotton, herself from Sunderland, first discovered their story, she couldn't understand why it wasn't more widely known. Furthermore, she was inspired by their courage, fortitude and derring-do to compose Engelchen, a musical tribute to the duo's lives and work, first performed at Seventeen Nineteen Holy Church in Sunderland and now a full-length release by Rocket Recordings. Engelchen is a work which builds a bridge between the emotional intensity of the music that inspired the Cook sisters and the bravery and jeopardy of their lives. This story is relayed by Alison Cotton, whether acapella or by means of richly emotive string arrangements, with a deftness of touch, sensitivity and intensity that matches the feverish nature of the experiences and the unforgiving environs in which they took place. Summoning foley work to sum up the atmospheres of the sister's journeys (from train noises to the sound of gulls on the English coast, to the ominous military drumbeat) Engelchen is a transporting work whose spirit is situated in a very specific time and place. In putting together Engelchen, Alison met up with refugees living in the UK today via the charity North East Rise to discover the challenges they've faced on their journey, and those experiences ultimately found their way into a new version of the piece's eponymous track, connecting the Cook sisters' story to 2024. This is more than merely an inspirational tribute to two mavericks who beat the odds in an unforgettable feat of altruism. It's a celebration of the human spirit, one that reflects a universality in its narrative which transcends the boundaries of history and impacts very urgently on our daily lives. Whatever attempts may be made to tell this story, it's hard to imagine one that resonates deeper than Engelchen. Co-release with Rocket Recordings.

BRAINWALTZERA Medal Headz EP 12"
Brainwaltzera gets the remix treatment from stalwart of UK underground music, Peshay, alongside alternate versions of original material. Taking on "Medal Headz [ G.B. D. F.]," lifted from the recent Brainwaltzera LP Itsame, British drum and bass producer Peshay turns in a driving remix in a classic UK style. Rolling breaks meet a heady reese bass line and wide-angle atmospherics, put together with all the aplomb of a skilled craftsman doing what he does best. It's music made for the dancefloor, delivered in a timeless style by one of the heads of the early Good Looking Records and Metalheadz years. On the B1, Brainwaltzera takes the reigns with an extended version of the original album piece -- a valuable reminder of the impressive source material, reimagined in a new context. For the B2, the artist offers a previously interconnected phase of "Medal Headz [G. B.D.F.]" up as a track in its own right. A spellbinding IDM reduction, it's wrought with all manner of synth flourishes, elegant drum machine rhythms, and warping synths -- a neat closer that offers a new and intriguing approach to an LP highlight.

"Good 2 Me" opens with airy chords, robust toms, flickers of resonant synth stabs and soulful vocals running atop snappy drums before "Free" embraces a classic '90s New York aesthetic with heavily swung percussion a jazzy bass groove, emotive piano lines and warm vocal chants. The B-side is then kicked off with "Make Me Feel," diving deep with shimmering, expansive leads, looped vocal, swirling string melodies and a classic bumpy bass and snare combination. The "Aeriel (Windy City Version)" then rounds things out, as the name would suggest nodding to the Chicagoan roots of house and employing all the classic tropes from slick flutes, intertwined keys, glistening piano melodies and shuffled 909 drums.

FELDMAN, MORTON Piano, Violin, Viola, Cello 2LP
Morton Feldman's last composition, Piano, Violin, Viola, Cello, was completed in 1987; although its instrumentation largely corresponds to that of Piano and String Quartet, with one instead of two violins, it differs in almost every other respect from the composition written only two years earlier, for here, in contrast to Piano and String Quartet, Feldman makes every effort to integrate the piano into the string section, and the basic formal components of the composition are no longer staves, as they were in Piano and String Quartet. Double LP with 4th side etched.

SAMUEL PRODY Samuel Prody CD
Heavy-rock classic from 1971 now officially reissued for the first time. Samuel Prody was a British psychedelic hard-rock band which evolved from another group called Giant (originally with Viv Prince of the Pretty Things on drums). Led by bass player/vocalist Tony Savva and featuring top guitar player Derek Smallcombe (Jason Crest), they recorded their sole album in England but for some weird reason it was only released in Germany back at the time, making it a true rarity of the heavy prog era. Wild vocals, pounding drums, distorted guitars, psych effects -- culminating in the eight-minutes long "Hallucination." Bootlegged many times, Guerssen presents the first-ever band-sanctioned reissue with their amazing history told for the first time. Remastered sound with insert featuring liner notes by Klemen Breznikar (It's Psychedelic Baby) and photos. Includes download card. RIYL: Black Sabbath, Edgar Broughton Band, Pink Fairies, Orang-Utan, Jerusalem.

OUTER WORLD Who Does The Music Love? LP
"Kenneth Close and Tracy Wilson have built themselves a new universe in the form of a home recording studio to transport themselves a galaxy away from the grief, fear, and worry the pandemic brought. The duo dubbed themselves Outer World and they blasted off into an entirely new to them corner of the musical universe to create their debut album Who Does The Music Love? Close and Wilson had spent the previous decade creating technicolor post-punk pop as the band Positive No. Their final cinematic album Kyanite dabbled with electronic sounds and hints that had they remained active through the past three years, their indie rock genre banner would have been torn down to make way for something more-free adventurous. Their current home studio sits in the center of what they lovingly call the record womb, a computer surrounded by some 7,000 records and all their instruments/ recording gear. Tucked into the layers of Who Does The Music Love? is a century of recorded music from all over the world. There is the dynamic swing of a Swedish soul jazz singer on top of Bond worthy spy themes. There is the sensuality of France in the '60s when in swaggers a wink to '90s house music. There is a tug-o-war between a '70s angular post punk and experimental Brazilian psych. Cosmic Jazz, noisecore, freakbeat breaks, space age bachelor pad Moog mayhem, and the treatment of the iconic retro-future group Broadcast as a genre and chosen family. This diverse blend is just some of Outer World's psychedelic garage pop points of inspiration. It is music to make any crate digger's heart skip a beat."

GLAS Kisses Like Feathers LP
Lisbet Fritze and Louise Foo have shared artistic trajectories for half of their lives, having been two thirds of pop noir purveyors Giana Factory. As Glas, the duo reveals a patchwork of everyday observations rooted in significant life changes: moving countries, becoming a mother, keeping sane with and without a significant other. The music conveys a quest for balance, riding the line between doomy drama and playing it cool. Their ten-song, self-produced debut, Kisses Like Feathers comes through Hamburg's HFN Music. All lyrics, vocals and instruments were performed by Glas, and recorded in their studio. The album was mixed by Anders Trentem?ller, with artwork by Brunswicker studio. The Copenhagen-based duo have never been short on inspiration. Lisbet has lent her vocal and guitar talents to Trentem?ller, in both the studio and on stage. Louise has explored immersive music with avant-pop project S?STR, along with her sister, Sharin Foo of The Raveonettes. Lisbet's other life involves architectural design. Louise works with sound installations in a visual arts context. The musical ideas of these two polymaths find coherence in the newly-formed Glas. Kisses Like Feathers embody Nordic duality. Dark at times, it also presents with an open ethereality. Some songs feel tailor-made for a club's sound system. Others lend themselves to intimate, headphone moments. While Lisbet and Louise's harmonious vocal stack is the common thread throughout the album, the musical fabric is interlaced with acoustic, electric, and electronic instruments. Lo-fi piano and acoustic guitars share a reciprocal space with rich, synthetic orchestration. Galloping, modern rhythms and folk arrangements are often featured in the same song. These elements, and so many others, buttress the pair's hymns.

C'MON TIGRE Habitat LP
C'mon Tigre, the innovative music collective known for their genre-blending compositions, releases their highly anticipated fourth album Habitat. Drawing inspiration from the concept of an ecosystem where various forms of life, both animal and vegetal, thrive and coexist, the album takes listeners on a sonic journey through the intricate and ever-evolving nature's theater. C'mon Tigre's ability to blend in?uences from distant corners of the world enriches their music and visual imagery. The album is deeply in?uenced by rhythms coming from Brazilian tradition, the backbone is rooted in samba, forro, through instruments and tempos that come from this cultural magnificence. However, it retains the African jazz, electronic, and mixed in?uences that have characterized the project thus far. Connecting the dots, the result is a richly layered and genre-defying soundscape. The record boasts a stellar lineup of collaborations. Among these are Seun Kuti, heir to the legacy of the legendary Fela Kuti, whose afrobeat roots infuse the album with a potent and infectious energy. The record also features Xenia Franca, a dynamic Brazilian artist hailing from S?o Paulo, Arto Lindsay, recognized as a pivotal figure in the world of experimental music, Giovanni Truppi and the Californian collective Drumetrics which featured on C'mon Tigre's records since their debut in 2014.

SCIENTIST Watch This! Dubbing at Tuff Gong LP
2024 repress; LP version. Most people associate Tuff Gong with Bob Marley, and rightly so, as he was often called Tuff Gong and his early releases came out on the Tuff Gong label. But Tuff Gong was also the name of a recording complex named after Bob Marley that included a top-level recording studio, pressing plant, and distribution center. Marley had taken over the former residence of Island Records boss Chris Blackwell -- Island House, 56 Hope Road -- around 1974. Two days before the Smile Jamaica Concert, on December 3, 1976, the house was ambushed by gunmen. Marley's manager, Don Taylor was hit five times, Marley was shot in the arm, and his wife Rita was hit in the head by a stray bullet -- but none of the injuries were fatal. Immediately after the concert Marley started his self-imposed exile from Jamaica, settling in London, England. This would lead to the aptly named Exodus album being recorded there in the summer of 1977. It would not be until the One Love Peace Concert in Kingston's National Stadium on the April 22, 1978, that Marley would return to the island. Marley felt it was important to show his commitment to the people of Jamaica, and upon his return to 56 Hope Road, he began the construction of his own recording studio with the help of music mogul Tommy Cowan. Unfortunately, Marley's short life would end on the May 11, 1981, from cancer. His passing would lead to 56 Hope Road being turned into a museum. A new location would have to be found to carry on Marley's work; this turned out to be 220 Marcus Garvey Drive, Kingston 11. Rita Marley and Tuff Gong International bought the facility, and hired engineers including Errol Brown (Treasure Isle Studios) and Hopeton Brown aka Scientist, so named for his groundbreaking style by the great producer Bunny "Striker" Lee, who had worked with him previously at King Tubby's studio and Channel One Studios. Watch This! Dubbing at Tuff Gong focuses on the work carried out by the great Scientist on the songs of the Black Solidarity label (run by Ossie Thomas aka Joe the Boss), at Tuff Gong, one of the foremost recording, pressing, and distribution facilities on the Jamaican island, set up from the work of Bob Marley to carry forward reggae music.

LEGENDARY PINK DOTS, THE Traumstadt 2 2CD
"The Legendary Pink Dots are an Anglo-Dutch experimental rock band formed in London in August 1980. In 1984 the band moved to Amsterdam, playing with rotating musicians and having, as core members, singer/songwriter/keyboardist Edward Ka-Spel and keyboardist Phil Knight aka The Silverman. The band was originally called One Day... but subsequently changed the name to The Legendary Pink Dots, apparently inspired by pink dots on certain keys of the band's main recording studio piano. In the 1980s the band released albums on Mirrodot and In Phaze; in 1985 they signed with Play It Again Sam for the release of The Lovers. Their music touches on elements of neo-psychedelia, ambient music, electronic music, tape music, industrial, psychedelic folk, synthpop, post-punk, progressive, jazz, noise, pop, and goth rock, with a distinctly experimental/avant-garde bent; their sound has evolved over time and remains distinctive, making it difficult to place the group into a concise style or genre. The group's overall sound combined with Ka-Spel's distinct lyrics and singing have earned comparisons to Pink Floyd and Syd Barrett; the group also has links to the sounds of krautrock bands such as Can, Faust, Brainticket, Magma, or Neu! The first cassette Only Dreaming was an edition of nine copies, two of which had beautiful three-dimensional handmade covers. Only Dreaming was abandoned rather than deleted as the recorded output by The Dots expanded massively within months of the band's inception. The Traumstadt series collects compilation appearances by the group, with Traumstadt 2 maybe being the best of these collections. It focuses on rare tracks from 1984 to 1988 and was originally released on cassette by the band's own Mirrordot label. For this CD re-issue, it has been remastered once again and this much-loved album now sounds better than ever before."

PEPE EISMEER & THIERRY MULLER Curieuse Quietude CD
"Thierry M?ller is a multi-instrumentalist and composer who is best known for his projects Ilitch and Ruth. He uses unconventional guitars as well as keyboards and other electronic devices to create unusual textures and sounds. A Parisian graphic designer, he began making recordings in the early 1970s using prepared guitars, harmonium and tape recorders as instruments. Since 1978, his albums with multiple and unclassifiable universes (Periodik Mindtrouble, 10 Suicides) have been erected as cult classics by people like Lee Ranaldo, Steven Stapleton, Edward Ka-Spel. He has collaborated with, among others, Valentina Fanigliulo (Mushy), Nick Littlemore (Empire Of The Sun), Aaron Moore (Volcano The Bear), Jac Berrocal, and Quentin Rollet. Pepe Wismeer is a duo living in the Ardennes led by Anne-Laure Therme and Damien Van Lede. Since 1999 they have released about twenty albums, all relatively unclassifiable and deep, on the borders of experimental, industrial, dark-folk and ambient. In their icy or hot universe where a subtle mixture of anguish and melancholy crouches, emerging from a multitude of organic and analog sounds, the languid voice, the piano and the sometimes-epic effects breathe melodies and frames of a irresistible beauty. Steven Stapleton of Nurse With Wound chose them for his compilation of versions of 'Two Shaves And A Shine.' Thierry M?ller and Pepe Eismeer met during a showcase in a Paris record shop and started chatting. They soon decided to work together and have previously released one collaborative album."

MARVIN & GUY Who Dis 12"
After a six-year break, a poignant love affair between Life and Death and Marvin & Guy resumes with two catchy but effective tracks that breaks a two-year hiatus from releasing original music. Minimal and purposefully crafted for dancefloors, a departure from their usual emphasis on melodies. This record emerges organically during playful experimentation with just a bass on a synthesizer, preserving its distinctive rhythmic and harmonic changes. The girlfriend's continuous request to play "Who Dis" underscores its contagious allure. Both songs incorporate sounds like shattered glass, opening doors, a whip, and an authentic Formula 1 engine roar -- all meticulously recorded specifically for these ideas. There's not really specific creative process beside having fun with synthesizers; it's simply music crafted for the joy of dancing.

BEOGRAD Remek Depo LP
Beograd (Belgrade in Serbian) is a four-piece Serbian electronic band, formed in the capital of the former Yugoslavia in 1980. In?uenced by bands such as Kraftwerk, Depeche Mode, Ultravox, and Human League, it played a role pioneer on the Yugoslav synth-pop scene. Their first studio album, Remek Depo, was released in late 1982 on cassette and early 1983 on vinyl by public label PGP RTB. It was a huge media success, released at the time of the effervescence of Belgrade's alternative scene, a vibrant underground movement of avant-garde artists and musicians that included leading bands such as Sarlo Akrobata, Ekatarina Velika, Idoli, and Electricni Orgazam. Unfortunately, the band disbanded shortly after the album's release. The album contains politically provocative lyrics for the time. Produced by Sasa Habi?, it stands out for the quality of its guest musicians -- timpanist Borislav "Bora Longa" Pavi?evi?, avant-garde saxophonist Paul Pignon, and veteran jazz trumpeter Stjepko Gut -- who contributed to its soulful side, creating a unique combination of hot and cold.

ASH RA TEMPEL Schwingungen CD
2024 re-release. CD edition of the 1972 original release, one of the most important German Krautrock albums -- remastered by Manuel G?ttsching himself. Julian Cope?s review in his Krautrocksampler book states: "Beware of Schwingungen!" That should be the large sticker on the front of all copies of this record. For it is dangerous to be casually introduced to something that is life-changing. It all starts fairly simply and without any cause for alarm ? "Look at Your Sun" begins with a Doorsy lone groover guitar begins a pedestrian blues, beautiful. Then the most crushed voice, a cross between Johnny Rotten and Tiny Tim, preaches its way into the proceeds. And then the most far out track of all begins. This is called "Flower Must Die" and it is a free-rock giant that transcends everything else in its field (there are no contenders.) After a slow weird build, a frantic streamlined one-chord mantra kicks in and it's like the Stooges' Funhouse period. The title-track begins poetically enough with Wolfgang Muller's epic and hugely reverbed vibraphone. Organ fades in and FX guitars, and time passes by. Finally, tom-toms roll and the developing pace is built upon until that great eternal chord sequence finally materializes -- this is the one that G?ttsching and Enke believed was the sound of heaven. They may have been right. And Schwingungen was a gift from the Gods.

COLLIER, ISAIAH Parallel Universe 2LP
Restocked. Multi-instrumentalist and composer Isaiah Collier connects with the divine ancestors on a transcendent Direct-To-Disc session, Parallel Universe. A saxophonist by trade whose multi-instrumental talents and compositional prowess have stretched the limits of the form, Parallel Universe represents a new chapter in Collier's musical journey. Having already performed with a diverse range of musicians such as Chance The Rapper, Waddada Leo Smith, Chicago jazz royalty Angel Bat Dawid, and his own band The Chosen Few, Collier's latest work as a bandleader explores the shared musical heritage of the African diaspora with a sense of grace and assurance that belies his years. Embracing the risk and vulnerability that comes with the live process, Collier and his band tapped into the frequencies of improvisation that fired up so many of the most timeless jazz recordings. Name-checking Sun Ra, Ras G, J Dilla, Fela Kuti, Miles Davis, Gil ScottHeron, Whitney Huston, Aaliyah, and Frankie Knuckles, the opening track of Parallel Universe imagines a genreless musical lineage that resonates with the polyphony of stories his band bring to the table, from Chicago and beyond. Featuring gospel soul singer Jimetta Rose, AACM, and former Art Ensemble of Chicago trumpet player Corey Wilkes, blues-rooted guitarist Michael Damani, regular collaborators Julian Davis Reid, James Russell Sims and Micah Collier, the eight-track album bristles with a sense of love and understanding between players at the top of their game. With vocals sung in Yoruba -- inspired by a gift from legendary saxophonist Kenny Garrett -- "Village Song" soars between rhythms and references, from Afro-Cuban syncopation to the deep triplet swing of mid-'60s Coltrane. Laying the foundations for the album as a whole, the result is truly exhilarating.

VA Would It Sound Just As Bad, If You Played It Backwards, Vol. 1 2LP
Limited 2024 restock. A collection of sounds from the Studio Eksperymentalne Polskiego Radia (1959-2001). Would It Sound Just As Bad If You Played It Backwards assembles a collection of audio experiments created at the Polish Radio Experimental Studio (PRES) from 1959 to the beginning of the millennium. These exceptional works are presented alongside images from the Polish artist Zofia Kulik, whose career reached its apogee between the late 1960s and early '70s. While PRES and Kulik remain important artifacts in the recent history of the Polish avant-garde, presenting them together in one release may not seem like an obvious choice. There are, of course, some historical intersections -- he most notable being a shared interest in Polish artist and architect Oskar Hansen's Open Form theory. Open Form promoted a modular theory of architecture that became a tool adapted by its users and inhabitants to... Hansen's ideas influenced Kulik's early works and also manifested in the PRES's iconic "black room", a music studio designed by Hansen, himself, which was equipped with moveable sound panels that absorbed or reflected sounds to promote a greater, creative freedom from its users. And yet, as it usually goes, the most obvious connections are usually the most deceitful. Whereas Kulik initially followed Open Form, she later turned away from it. And as for the black room -- it mostly worked in theory but not in practice. What is it then that makes the two work together? Features Krzysztof Knittel, Bohdan Mazurek, Magdalena D?ugosz, Barbara Zawadzka, Rudnik, and Bogus?aw Shaeffer.Polish Radio Experimental Studio - PRES (Polish: Studio Eksperymentalne Polskiego Radia) was an experimental music studio in Warsaw, where electronic and utility pieces were recorded. The establishment of the Polish Radio Experimental Studio was conceived by W?odzimierz Sokorski, head of the Radio and Television Committee. Between 1952 and 1956 he was a Minister of Culture, and as a strong supporter of socialist realism he fought against any manifestations of modernity in music. The Polish Radio Experimental Studio was founded on the November 15th, 1957, but only in the second half of the following year was it adapted for sound production. It operated until 2004. Until 1985, for 28 years the studio was headed by its founder -- J?zef Patkowski -- musicologist, acoustician, and the chairman of the Polish Composers' Union. The second most important person in the Studio was Krzysztof Szlifirski, an electro-acoustics engineer. Before founding the studio J?zef Patkowski visited similar hubs in Cologne, Paris, Gravesono and Milan. Though the studio was a place where autonomous electronic pieces were recorded, this wasn't its main purpose. It was launched as a space for the creation of independent compositions, sounds illustrations for radio dramas, and soundtracks for theatre, film and dance.

CRYSTALAUGUR Terranaut LP
2024 restock; LP version. Out-Sider Records present the first ever legit reissue of Crystalaugur's Terranaut, originally released in 1975. This reissue is done with the band's involvement. Crystalaugur were formed by four young ex-pats attending school in Singapore in the early 70s: Howard Kukla, Kim Bengs, Bryan Hall and Guy Rittger. For most of them this was their first serious musical experience. Terranaut was recorded on a 4-track machine and subsequently released by the band in a private edition of 200 copies on their own Warped Records imprint. Terranaut is ultimate underground, lo-fi, psychedelic rock. Loose feel, raw sound, spacey prog-funk touches, sound effects and some proto-DIY, pre-punk vibes which bring to mind Velvet Underground or avant-garage '70s Cleveland bands like Pere Ubu but also hard-rockers ala Pink Fairies or Stray. Bootlegged many times over the years, this is the first ever legit reissue of this "lost-in-time" psychedelic artefact. Includes insert with rare photos and detailed liner notes by Jeremy Cargill (Got Kinda Lost, Ugly Things), explaining the fascinating story behind Crystalaugur and debunking many myths and false rumors about the band and their only album. Cargill says, "Terranaut is a rollicking, rumbling and lightly ramshackle bomb of cosmic teenage hard rock informed by an infatuation with the early rumblings of progressive rock (given a proto-punk edge by the discontent of the group's constituents)." Featured in Hans Pokora's Record Collector Dreams book with the maximum scale rarity.

EKOMANE/LAUREL HALO, JESSICA Manifolds/Octavia LP
Entirely computer-generated, Jessica Ekomane's "Manifolds" is a work that explores the multiple possibilities of polyphonic writing, extending it to the "multiphonic" universe where sources and timbres diffract themselves in the listening space. The different voices of the composition no longer follow the traditional parallel trajectories of musical dialogue, but find themselves propelled as if into a particle accelerator, a "collider" freed from all formal rhetoric to reach a state of liberation of energies that is truly confounding. It is then that, in the multi-layered universe of sonic electrons, as if against its own will, a "chant" of overwhelming humanity is revealed. Laurel Halo's "Octavia," a piece for piano and electronics, explores the relationship between melodic motifs and textures in a singular way, intermittent moments of melody, harmony and sound materials connecting and disconnecting, to indicate a series of nets or webs, swaying in and out of one another. These sonic nets gently float, spin and merge, and the effect is one of gently floating over an abyss. The work is inspired by the "spiderweb city" of the same name in Italo Calvino's Invisible Cities: "Below there is nothing for hundreds of feet: a few clouds glide past; further down you can glimpse the chasm's bed. Suspended over the abyss, the life of Octavia's inhabitants is less uncertain than in other cities. They know the net will last only so long."

When you approach them, you have the distinct impression that you're facing castles, monasteries, cities; but they suddenly disappear, like fantastical dreams, illusions, or mirages. You become a traveler in the land of dreams and Fata Morgana. It's a place, where only Silence speaks. And it was this Silence that inspired me to compose Melancholy." --Zbigniew Preisner

COUSIN KULA Vitamin D LP
Feeling like the first shot of sunshine after a long winter, Cousin Kula sound instantly recognizable yet gloriously renewed on their second album Vitamin D. If their debut album Double Dinners (RS 046LP, 2022) was the soundtrack to your heartbreak then this is the sound of falling back in love again. Even the titles of the tracklist -- "Clothes Off," "Staying With You," "Good Feeling" -- boldly set the coordinates for this new body of work. From the opening wash of searing synth chords, bouncing bass, wailing guitar lines and flutters of flute, it's abundantly clear this is a feel-good album. Label boss, Bradley Zero exclaims "I think it's fair to say that the band have shaken off the collective cobwebs and are ready for a summer of love!" Vitamin D is for the lovers, but also for the dancers. Cousin Kula have expanded their vocabulary but also learnt when to just sit back in the groove. Funk and disco have permeated their psychedelic indie-soul sound and it's all the better for it. A quintet of virtuosic musicians, flexing when necessary but more often than not stripping it right back and reveling in the pocket. It's a rare case of perfect thematic and musical synergy.

MUTE Direct Cuts (Redux) 12"
Re-issue of a Running Back classic. Originally released in 2003 as the second outing of the label, it is still a remarkable release in the catalogue. Now, carefully rescued from the original DAT tapes, re-edited by Gerd Janson and remastered by Lopazz, it's available again in a clear and present portraiture of its original intent. Conceived by the rather elusive Mute, the Direct Cuts are a master class in heartfelt and understated timeless deep house. Influenced in equal parts by the still towering Prescription Underground and the New York singularity that was a young Bobby Konders, Mute managed to create a sound of his own. Marked by live arrangements, bedroom studio aesthetics, a love for dub music and a tempo that was more boogie than techno, it has not lost an inch of its charm. A proposition that probably led Leon Vynehall to pick the hypnotic "Never" for his Fabric mix. Along with "Ocha," "Direct Cut," and "Bensono," Mute proves that iteration does not necessarily mates with deadly dullness.

EDE & DECKERT FEAT. SARGLAD Immer Remixes 12"
Remix package deluxe! Ede & Deckert (featuring Sargland)'s catchy new wave post punk hit Immer gets the special treatment. Their tale of lover's grief or delight is being put through the mangle by a varied bunch of remixers. Known to be without fear of emotional peaks and blessed with the usual sense of delight, they manage to hit the nail on its head. The Venice remix is a master class in vintage sounds coming through new speakers: primed for the prime time, while the Salford version does exactly what the name implies: for lads and lovers. Followed up by the simplicity of grass roots house music. Cinthie channels her inner DJ Duke and choreographs the indie dance steps back to basics. The Curses vocal keeps the instrumental, stays in the original vibe, but switches the vocals -- and the language. Finally, Kid Simius takes listeners on a bumper car ride somewhere between Miami Sound Machine and Yazoo. Immer works its magic in every way for everyone and now on almost any dance floor.

PARTIBOI69 Call Of The Void 12"
Partiboi69 strikes poses, chords, and hot irons. Australia's spiciest export since INXS's front man is a sensation on many (meta-)levels. Musically, aesthetically and hedonistically exhilarating, the man's man shows his sensitive side on Running Back. Four tracks answer the Call of the Void with a showcase of sounds and moods that are as much informed by the rules of old school dance music ("Bodies") as they draw inspiration from classic rave closing tracks ("Playin'"), plangent pop ("Feel This") and a former new romantics band that just discovered house music pre-internet ("Call of the Void"): surprisingly serious and simultaneously not-so-serious. Composed and executed with serious songwriting skills and an uncanny feel for the aural world of Running Back Records. A mutual pleasure, indeed.

TURNER, SIMON FISHER Symphony of a Great City: Backing Track CD
"Compact disc in digipak packaging. Limited edition of 250 copies. Simon Fisher Turner is an English musician and difficult cat to pill. His acting career began with numerous appearances in British television productions when he was in his teens. He's not actually very happy with those years now, but hey, what can you do! By the time he was in his 20s he was pursuing twin acting and musical paths, appearing in television and film rolls while performing in a variety of bands. In his 30s he abandoned acting completely while continuing to explore new forms of musical expression, which with the passing of time became ever more inventive and adventurous. To this day he stands with both feet in film and music, simultaneously scoring films, documentaries and composing site specific soundtracks and producing music all over the world. An outsider.""This score was commissioned for the film Symphony of a Great City by Walther Ruttmann. The musicians I choose to perform it with were Klara Lewis and Rainier Lericolais. I made the backing track using tones and pitches from MARX on Abletone Live. I then sent Klara and Rainier all my home recordings through the years I made when visiting Berlin, from the mid-eighties to the present day. The idea was that they could process anything from my source tapes, and not use anything else. This to me seemed an interesting idea, as then all the sounds would come from various times from the city and surrounding countryside itself. All of the sounds were recorded while I made music for two films. Cycling the Frame (1988) and The Invisible Frame (2009) by Cynthia Beatt. One was shot before the Soviet-era wall dividing the city came down, and the other afterwards. My original sounds for Cycling the Frame were recorded on cassette and I used a Casio SK1 sampler and a Revox to track and mix on. Sounds on The Invisible Frame were all recorded digitally on a Roland Edirol recorder. Time passes and technology moves forwards. I had a dozen or so dub plates made from these recordings, and Rainier was in control of the wind-up gramophone player we used to start the concerts with. I also had a piano. We have never been able to record this music properly in the studio, so I thought let's just release Backing Track so everyone can have a go and make their own version." --Simon Fisher Turner

I would be happy if you used it in any way you want, which these days means 'manipulate at your leisure' with as much technology as you feel, or not perhaps. Myself, I love to slow these pieces down, or drop them two octaves for a section or not. Please experiment and edit and re/edit backwards or forwards whenever you feel the urge. If you feel it. Some of these pieces are also very happy just sitting under your film doing nothing. A bit like a jam filling in a cake. Just filling a visual space with sounds. Unspecific. Vague. Just being in your film. They love this role a lot. Sitting. Doing very little. Taking up space but never crowding the frame. You may want to re/sample some of this music. Please feel free. The music here is all for you to play with. I have no idea how I made it either, that doesn't really matter does it? But I try to be simple and strong." --Simon Fisher Turner

KOLETZKI, OLIVER Grossstadtmarchen LP
2024 repress. Stil Vor Talent present the first vinyl issue of Oliver Koletzki's most successful album Gro?stadtm?rchen, originally released in 2009. With Gro?stadtm?rchen, the Berlin-based techno and house producer created a musically compact album, working together with many different singers: Established artists like Mieze Katz from the German electro-pop outfit MIA., the hot German pop-rock-singer Axel Bosse, indie band Kate Mosh as well as newcomers such as Fran, Pyur, and Juli Holz. The result are ten songs that easily fluctuate between catchy pop tracks, modern house grooves, and '80s synthesizer pop, yet it still maintains Koletzki's very own sound dynamic. Gro?stadtm?rchen, which translates as "The Tale Of The Big City" starts off with "This Is Leisure". Famous pop singer Mieze Katz has put down her sexy voice on a guitar-based song pattern that functions as an ideal introduction into the craziness of the big city tales. Juli Holz's softly whispering voice sings about the dilemmas of love in the big city on "Zuckerwatte", a very fine electro-pop tune. Oliver Koletzki and Axel Bosse board an underground train that takes them around the Berlin U-Bahn system and back. Axel Bosse adds his melancholic voice to this groovy pop anthem and sings about the poetic magic of public transport, while the sounds of the trains lay on top. Of course, Koletzki added some purely instrumental tracks on his album, too: "Kusskompatibel" and "Warschauer Stra?e" are a journey back to Oliver's first years in Berlin and his love for house music. "Kleines Zwischenspiel" also celebrates the energetic sound of electronic music. Then there is another great shine of bright light with the pop track "Hypnotized" that is already making airwaves on German radio. It features the newcomer singer Fran that turns this track into a wonderful electronic love story -- a catchy pop anthem about the first dance, the first kiss and that special moment when the night turns into day. "Headshaped Box" encapsulates what indie-tronic sounds like in the year 2009: symphonic, melodic and simply unique. On "These Habits" the just seventeen-year-old singer Pyur makes her debut. This down-beat trip hop-groove is a wonderful hit for late summer. Oliver Koletzki remixes "Nimm Mich Mit" by the electronic boy-band Die Raketen. Gro?stadtm?rchen is the logical consequence from two decades of intense musical production. It's a mature, yet still playful pop album that manages to combine many different influences into one harmonious oeuvre. Includes download code.

BRAUSEPOTER Keiner Kann Uns Ab CD
Brausep?ter (Martin L?ck, Bernd Hanhardt and Kemper) were founded in 1978 in East Westphalia and were originally called Nordwest Germanes Eiterlager, NWE for short. Brilliant name, but Brausep?ter isn't bad either! This makes them one of the first German punk bands -- punk in the true sense of the word, or as the US fanzine Maximum Rocknroll put it: "It's indie punk in the purest John Peel sense" or, as Martin L?ck put it, "We always wanted to take all the rock out of our music." Brausep?ter released their last regular album Nerven gesch?digt in 2019. The punk magazine FAZ titled their review "The new Brausep?ter record shows what punk means today." For them, Brausep?ter is "a German band that was unfortunately too good to become as famous as Trio or Die Toten Hosen." Spiegel Online also liked Nerven gesch?digt: "In its radical disinterest in everything that is possible and promising, Brausep?ter's music seems even more consistent today than it did back then." The lost 1979 album Keiner kann uns ab is now being released. Originally the record, recorded with a cassette recorder in '79, was supposed to be released by ZickZack, but nothing came of it. Did the tape get lost in the post? Were the recordings too good? Or too radical even for ZickZack? If Keiner kann uns ab had actually been released back then, who knows, perhaps today the album would be mentioned in the same breath as Monarchie und Alltag, Amok Koma, or Slime's debut. But maybe not, because the Brausep?ter sound is too unique, too ramshackle, too DIY -- closer to the TVPs, closer to The Fall or closer to the early Mekons than to all the punk rock bands. Brausep?ter are simply "indie punk in the purest John Peel sense."

ASTOR, PETE Tall Stories & New Religions CD
2024 marks 40 years of Pete Astor making records, a suitable anniversary point at which to take stock and double back on songs that first appeared on records by Astor-fronted combos such as Creation Records trailblazers The Loft and The Weather Prophets, and Matador recording artists The Wisdom of Harry, as well as selections from solo albums that appeared on labels such as Danceteria and Static Caravan. Astor's motivation for Tall Stories & New Religions, as his extensive notes make clear, is manifold. Some songs are effectively reexamined in the way one might linger over a resonant picture from a box of old photographs -- connecting with the essence of a younger self. Other songs are newly recast in wiser and more reflective hues, while others simply demanded exhumation from willfully opaque, lo-fi non-production. The songs chosen are not the obvious ones -- there's no "Up the Hill and Down the Slope" or "Almost Prayed" here -- but have been selected for more interesting, often esoteric, reasons. Astor is accompanied by an estimable band of co-conspirators, evolving out of many hours spent playing music together on records and at shows over the last decade. They are drummer Ian Button (Death in Vegas, Papernut Cambridge, Go Kart Mozart), bassist Andy Lewis (Paul Weller, Soho Radio, and Blow Up DJ), guitarist Wilson Neil Scott (Summerhill, Felt, Everything But the Girl), and keyboardist/multi-instrumentalist/producer Sean Read (Dexys, Mark Lanegan, Dave Gahan, Iggy Pop, Manic Street Preachers, Beth Orton, Chrissie Hynde). Together they've revisited these lost gems of songs in a manner that has allowed Astor to balance the way that they still make sense to him now, looking both to the future and to that big and interesting new country, the past.

It's hard to believe that these songs were all recorded in such a small time frame; so many of her top hits and fan-favorites were all captured during this very fruitful period with Bradley at Decca. Right off the bat, the new sessions struck gold with the classic 'I Fall To Pieces,' Cline's first Country #1. Most notably, working with Bradley led Cline to find her signature, distinctive sound - braiding wistful country music ballads with big-band pop sensibilities that shone a spotlight on her elastic, smooth vocals, forging the path for future country-pop crossovers. With her sound in place, the duo doubled-down on their successes, with sessions that produced chart-toppers 'She's Got You,' 'Crazy' and 'Sweet Dreams (of You).' Featuring absolutely stunning, powerful, full-color photos printed on the interior of the gatefold 3xLP jacket, Sweet Dreams is as just as rewarding for the eyes as the ears. The songs on this 51-track collection form the crown jewels of her discography and cement Patsy Cline's legacy as one of country music's greatest of all time. Black Vinyl, first time on vinyl, tri-fold jacket."

VELOSO, CAETANO Caetano Veloso LP
2024 restock. "The Tropicalia art movement of the late 1960s, with flourishes in visual art, poetry, theatre and music, is one of Brazil's most adored cultural concoctions. It was a movement which began out of necessity, shortly after a repressive military dictatorship seized power after 20 years of peaceful democracy. The term Tropicalia first came from the mind of Brazilian visual artist Helio Oiticica, whose eponymous piece consisted of a sandy maze bordered by tropical Brazilian flora and, at the end, a television set. Through satirizing symbols of their homeland and rejecting a pre-established national culture, the Tropicalists constructed a new form of 'aggressive nationalism' outside of an innately anti-imperialist Left and an unthinkingly patriotic Right. By refusing to accept underdevelopment as their identity and excitedly 'devouring' disparate culture (low and high brow, domestic and foreign, etc.), the Tropicalists carved out a unifying creative space, a universal sound, different from the older, bourgeois bossa nova movement and the newer, undiscerning rock movement. Caetano Veloso's self-titled debut solo album is one of the most important and influential Brazilian (and, dare we say, South American) albums of all time. With the release of this seminal album, Veloso would become the leading voice of Tropicalia. The songs on this album immediately connected with people. Alegria, Algeria was his breakout hit that gained traction as a hymn for liberty advocates, juxtaposing images of Coca Cola, guerrilla groups, bombs and Brigitte Bardot as part of the everyday experience. The album's first song Tropicalia was an anthem for the whole movement; it's a fragmented allegory, a structure borrowed from friends in the concrete poetry scene, touching on divergent cultural symbols, events, allusions and idioms, nimbly representing and critiquing the many contradictions in the new Brazilian dictatorship. Superbacana (translated as 'Supergroovy') follows a hyperbolic superhero's use of technology to fight a gang of cowboys led by the money-hungry Uncle Scrooge, serving as allusions to American imperialism and greed felt in their country, all in the rapid-fi re structure of a comic book. The subtext in all these songs, which the dictatorship would not immediately catch, were that these repressed but glaring contradictions, not the bountiful sunny paradise that the military regime was pushing, were the true national identity. Unfortunately, these cleverly veiled jabs in Veloso and his contemporaries' bodies of work gained greater and greater exposure as the movement became more and more popular, leading to the arrest, imprisonment and forced exile of Veloso and many of his cohort. Despite these difficulties, the Tropicalists continued creating in exile, strongly influencing artists both at home and abroad. This is the first authorized North American vinyl issue of Caetano Veloso. Whether you're a longtime fan or first-time listener, Third Man Records could not be more proud to spread the compelling story of this album, this artist and the Tropicalia movement."

YANO, AKIKO To Ki Me Ki CD
Wewantsounds continues its Akiko Yano reissue series with the release of the singer's third studio album To Ki Me Ki, recorded in New York and released in 1978 in Japan. It follows her cult Iroha Ni Konpeitou LP and keeps the similar blend of Japanese pop and New York funk found in the latter. To Ki Me Ki features such musicians as Rick Marotta, Will Lee, and David Spinozza, and also programmer Hideki Matsutake who would soon join the YMO with Akiko. To Ki Me Ki is reissued outside of Japan for the first time, remastered in Tokyo by revered engineer Mitsuo Koike and featuring original artwork by Tsutomu Murakami with four-page color insert and new liner notes by Paul Bowler. 1978 was a key year for Japanese Music. Yellow Magic Orchestra was about to release their ground-breaking debut album. All musicians involved had also released key solo albums that year (Sakamoto with Thousand Knives, Takahashi with Saravah and Hosono with Paraiso) and Akiko Yano (who would soon join the YMO on tour for their first international tour) was no exception and came with To Ki Me Ki. Two key additions come in the form of synth programmers Hideki Matsutake who had worked with Isao Tomita and who would soon be YMO's unofficial fourth member and Roger Powell, a Robert Moog protege who was playing with Todd Rundgren's Utopia group at the time. Together Akiko and her musicians concocted a superb mix of diverse styles ranging from funk ("Two on the Stage" and "To Ki Me Ki"), Latin "Uo Sao" featuring Marrero's distinctive percussion in addition to slower songs such as "Kodomo Tachi" and "Andante Cantabile," all showcasing Akiko's beautiful piano playing, unique singing and unparalleled knack for composing catchy songs. "To Ki Me Ki" is a key works in Akiko's discography just before she embarked in the YMO adventure and recorded her landmark album Tadaima in a radical shift of sound.

KAJI, MEIKO Gincho Wataridori CD
Wewantsounds continues its extensive Meiko Kaji reissue program in partnership with Teichiku Records and Meiko Kaji herself, with the release of Gincho Wataridori, her debut album from 1972. This is the first time the album is reissued since release and it comes with its original Japanese artwork and newly remastered audio. Famous for her '70s exploitation movies, Meiko Kaji also released a string of great albums on Teichiku mixing Japanese pop and cinematic grooves. This reissue comes with deluxe gatefold sleeve LP, OBI strip and a two-page insert featuring new liner notes by Hashim Kotaro Bharoocha. Renowned for her roles in the highly acclaimed Stray Cat Rock and Female Prisoner Scorpion film series, Kaji became one of the most famous exploitation actresses in Japan in the early '70s. Invited by film studios to sing the theme for many of her films, she ended up recording five albums for Teichiku between 1972 and 1974, which have become increasingly sought-after over the years. Gincho Wataridori was the very first album released by Meiko Kaji in 1972 and is a great mix of kayokyoku (Japanese Pop), traditional Enka Music, psych rock and '70s cinematic groove. The album features the song "Gincho Wataridori" a theme song for the eponymous gangster film released by Toei Films in 1972 (and known outside of Japan as "Wandering Ginza Butterfly"). On the cover of the album, Meiko actually wears the kimono she wears in the film. The song showcases Kaji's distinctive singing over a funky backbeat and fuzz guitar. Ginchou Wataridori was produced by two seasoned Teichiku producers, Yorifumi Ito and Kenji Nakajima and features a superb mix of pop songs ("Hakodate Monogatari"), funky ones ("Koini Inochio," "Shitto") and atmospheric ones ("Jingi Komoriuta") making the perfect setting for Meiko Kaji's unique singing, reflecting the cool, dangerous atmosphere of the films she would star in. The first of a series of five LPs produced for Teichiku between 1972 and 1974, Gincho Wataridori marks the beginning of Meiko Kaji's fruitful career as a recording artist and is a unique testament of her singing talent which Wewantsounds reissues in its full glory with gatefold sleeve, remastered from the original master tapes.

THOMAS HUMAN ARTS ENSEMBLE, LUTHER Funky Donkey Vol. 1 (1973) LP
Wewantsounds, in collaboration with Corbett vs. Dempsey, reissues one of the great albums out of the BAG galaxy recorded by Luther Thomas and a cohort of musicians including Joe Bowie, Charles Bobo Shaw, Floyd LeFlore, and Lester Bowie. LANE, DANNY SCOTT Home Decor LP
Limited restock. WRWTFWW Records present Home Decor, the sixth full-length album from New York born, Los Angeles based ambient/jazz/downtempo musician Danny Scott Lane. Danny Scott Lane's heartwarming ten-track affair is its very own kind of nostalgia-tinted modern chill out music, a silky cocktail of '80s synths and exotica seduction gently carried by Matt Elliot Gooden's sensuous saxophone. Dare you say ambient smooth jazz? Add hints of Italo, minimalism, and fusion, and you there you have it: Home Decor, a perfect soundtrack for cozy situations, one last drink on the balcony, strolls by the beach, relaxing, thinking back, possibly even gardening and cooking something delicious. Highlights such as "Champagne Spill", "Baby's First Balcony", and "Twin Bed" are not to be missed and should allow for a bit of (well-deserved) breathing in the tumultuous times the world is going through. Home Decor, indeed a rare gem to soothe the mind, body, and soul. Housed in a heavy 350gsm sleeve with an artwork from 3D virtual designer Lucas Barbuzzi.
