DOUGLAS & APPLESCAL, DAVID Demarrage LP
D?marrage is the first collaborative album by producers Applescal and David Douglas. The idea of creating a track inspired by cycling has been in their minds for several years. David Douglas and Applescal both share a deep passion for the road. In the summer of 2023, they decided to come together to write a track. Full of inspiration and atmospheric ideas, this evolved from a rough concept into a collection of tracks. What initially began as an idea for a single track quickly grew into the full-fledged electronic album D?marrage.

RUSSELL, ARTHUR Picture of Bunny Rabbit LP
Restocked; LP version. "In 1986 Arthur Russell was diagnosed with HIV, that same year he released his career-defining masterpiece World of Echo, the first and only solo album issued during his lifetime. Arthur had found his voice and a fresh direction with a set of new, transformative material, unlike anything he or anyone else had previously released. His illness ensured that the artistic growth and sense of exploration encapsulated in World of Echo would be tragically curtailed. Within six short years Arthur was gone. Arthur's final years were filled with a renewed commitment to creativity and unceasing live and recording work. He regularly performed the World of Echo material and incorporated several of its compositions in collaborations with choreographers active in New York's innovative dance community. Arthur worked closely with Diane Madden, Allison Salzinger, Stephanie Woodard and John Bernd, usually playing his cello and effects boxes off stage as the choreographers' pieces were performed. In 1993 Arthur posthumously received a prestigious Bessie Composer Award for his work in the dance world. Picture of Bunny Rabbit features nine previously unreleased performances from this era compiled from completed masters culled from two unique test pressings, including one, dated 9/15/85 by Arthur, provided by his mother and sister. A further four tracks were discovered in his tape archive. The track listing includes an exceptional and dramatic solo recording of 'In The Light of a Miracle' and the enigmatic title instrumental 'Picture of Bunny Rabbit', written especially for a friends pet rabbit. The bulk of the material was recorded with engineer Eric Liljestrand at Battery Sound Studios, New York, which was located directly opposite the World Trade Center and at Arthur's apartment studio in the East Village."

KRUCZYNSKI, BARTOSZ Dreams & Whispers LP
Balmat has always been careful not to call itself an ambient label. But with the 11th release, the label turns its ears -- proudly, blissfully -- to a strain of ambient at its most timeless. The appropriately titled Dreams & Whispers comes from Warsaw's Bartosz Kruczy?ski, who has recorded under a number of guises, Earth Trax, as well as his own name. Over the years, he's touched upon deep house, breakbeats, acid, techno, electro, IDM, and more; often, the throughline running through a given album is simply the refusal to remain in any one place for long -- well, that, and his unusually nuanced ear for harmony and texture. Those qualities come to the fore on Dreams & Whispers, which might be the most focused encapsulation of Kruczy?ski's atmospheric sensibilities to date. Across 14 stripped-down tracks for shimmer and pulse, Kruczy?ski evokes overlapping styles in ambient -- warm vibraphones, taut arps, massing strings, lonesome delay chains -- but always with his own twist. Fitting the album's title, the album is loosely divided into two distinct moods: The A-side, "Dreams," is charged with subtle movement, rhythms spreading out like rings around skipped stones, while the B-side, "Whispers," plunges into a zone of shadows and hush. The two complementary moods flow into one another like the faces of a Moebius strip, yielding an album that's intuitively shaped and rich in emotion. Balmat is a label with a cloudy outline. Jointly shepherded by Albert Salinas and Philip Sherburne, two friends living in Cardedeu, Catalonia, and on the Balearic island of Menorca, Balmat grew out of Lapsus Radio, a weekly show born almost ten years ago. Balmat's mission is simple: to foster new ideas, expand upon personal obsessions, and put enveloping sounds out into the world.

FOWLEY, KEVIN A Feu Doux LP
French lullabies and traditional folk songs dating as far back as the 14th century, adapted with contemporary arrangements and faint tape manipulations in Dublin, Ireland. Imagine Serge Gainsbourg, John Martyn, and G?bor Szab? squeezed on a small stage in the early hours of a smokey backstreet Parisian jazz club, slowly hypnotizing the audience into hypnagogic hallucinations. Growing up, Kevin Fowley split his time between living in France and Ireland. He listened to French lullabies sung by his mother in one room, while his father would be playing Donegal tunes on the fiddle in another. "I'm lucky to have been brought up bilingual and bicultural," he says. "What I find interesting is that I usually think in English, but if I intentionally start thinking in French, a markedly different side of my personality comes through, encouraging different thought patterns." And this is apparent on his beautiful record of French lullabies ? Feu Doux, which encompasses musical elements from both worlds, as it seamlessly glides across folk, jazz, and a rich yet shimmering in between sound. Varnished and exposed is the feeling that floats through ? Feu Doux like a gentle gust of wind creeping in through the open window at night. Real night time music.

SATURNO 4000 Ma Belle Fille/Solar Heart 7"
Turkish psych, Afro-Latin rhythms, funk, and surf rock effortlessly converge on "Ma Belle Fille" and "Solar Heart," the latest offerings from Berlin-based band Saturno 4000. These tracks, featured on their debut 45 for Batov Records, demonstrate the band's eclectic melding of diverse musical styles with seamless precision. Comprising Julia Beresikowa (vocals, guitar, percussions), Sebastian Carrizosa (guitar), Andrea Buccio (bass guitar), and Hannes Neupert (drums, percussions), Saturno 4000 isn't just a studio project; they've extensively toured Germany's live and festival circuit, captivating audiences with their infectious energy and layers of guitar fuzz. On the A-Side, "Ma Belle Fille" delivers a solid groove, with Andrea Buccio's mesmerizing bassline intricately synchronized with Hannes Neupert's Afrobeat-inspired drumming, enhanced by Diego Moscoso's djembe contributions. On top of this formidable foundation, Julia Beresikowa and Seba Carrizosa's electric guitars add both elegance and grit, while Julia's arresting French vocals ponder love and loss. Flipping the record, "Solar Heart" transports us to Peru via the Mediterranean, as vibrant cumbia rhythms are given a surf rock twist, Reminiscent of the classic gritty psychedelic strain of Peruvian cumbia yet very distinctly fresh, Beresikowa and Carrizosa's guitars take the lead, languidly followed by Andrea's loping bassline, Neupert's tight drumming and Moscoso's percussion. "Ma Belle Fille" and 'Solar Heart" showcase Saturno 4000's ability to reimagine classic sounds into new sonic possibilities, fitting seamlessly into Batov Record's Middle Eastern Groove series, known for its exceptional quality and innovation.

SCHNITZLER, CONRAD Blau (50th Anniversary Edition) LP
On the red album, Conrad Schnitzler laid down the direction his musical artistry would take. The blue album (Blau) offered confirmation of his intent. Maybe the Rot and Blau tracks were recorded in the same session. The structure, sound, and timbre of both LPs are so similar as to suggest that this was the case. Far more important than this historical pedantry is the fact that Schnitzler included two brand new compositions on Blau which followed on seamlessly from the previous album. Quite simply, he had found his way, a course from which he would not stray as long as he lived. The so-called Berlin School (Berliner Schule) -- with Conrad Schnitzler one of their number -- had developed its own style of minimalist music. Clearly distinct from Anglo-American pop music, and no less removed from the minimalist art music of Steve Reich or Philip Glass, the focus here was on electronics and elementary rhythmics. The Berlin musicians showed no great interest in instrumental or vocal virtuosity, nor were they in thrall to exuberant interleaving of rhythm. With the aid of synthesizers and studio technology, they were bent on breaking into territory hitherto considered the province of a privileged elite, clouded in mystery and secrecy, resonating with uncharted sounds and noise. Blau is an archetypal example of this very phenomenon. Courage, the pioneering spirit and artistic brilliance can be detected in each part of the album's two infinite sequences. Inspired by Joseph Beuys, Schnitzler propagated those very tones beyond the musical realm, detached from tradition, the only tones capable of catalyzing the utterly stagnant pop music and new music scene of the day, injecting them with fresh impulses. Questions of harmony, melody and strict form were well and truly rejected by Schnitzler. His aural crystals shine like pearls on a string. Schnitzler uses his ropes of pearls to weave new, fantastic patterns which constantly shift like kaleidoscopes to reveal unexpected facets; they are signposts to spatial and temporal infinity. Schnitzler's style was really too idiosyncratic ever to set a precedent, but he was, and still is, one of the most significant inspirations for pop music in more recent times. Already a figure of prominence, perhaps he will one day be elevated to the status of a legend. Limited anniversary edition: embossed, reverse board, hand numbered, limited edition blue vinyl, 500 copies available.

ROSE & THE VOICES OF CREATION, JIMETTA Things Are Getting Better LP
Jimetta Rose and The Voices of Creation present new album Things Are Getting Better via Day Dreamer Recordings. A spirit-lifting, soul-stirring devotional that effortlessly unites house, funk, soul, RnB and hip-hop influences, Things Are Getting Better hears the LA-based vocal group reach new heights to spread a message of faith and togetherness in troubled times. Accompanying the announcement is lead single "Portals." "Portals" is the album's opening track and first single, an invitation to step into a new paradigm and a new way of thinking. Built on a shuffling groove, Jimetta leads the Voices of Creation in a soaring incantation to self-belief. Breaking the traditional gospel mold with soulful RnB vocal runs and syncopated verses, "Portals" is a fitting introduction to an album that might just change your life. Where their Mario Caldato-produced debut How Good It Is (DD 007LP, 2022) captured the raw power of the choir and channeled their irrepressible live energy on record, Things Are Getting Better introduces a more crafted studio sound to the arrangements. An evolution rather than a reinvention, this is the gospel of Jimetta, delivering "new mantras and new prayers for this new day that we find ourselves in that is so stark between the dark and the light." Composed of non-professional singers who she assembled following an online call-out, The Voices of Creation embodies Jimetta's mission to demystify the ministry, spreading a message of faith in the power of music to effect positive change. A prolific vocalist and collaborator with the likes of Anderson. Paak, Carlos Ni?o, and Angel Bat Dawid, this time Jimetta leads from the front, bringing in instrumentalists Isaiah Collier, Ryan Porter, and V.C.R. to create a fuller, more diverse palette. Recorded at Sunset Sound studios in Los Angeles alongside fellow producers and choir members Jack Maeby, Allakoi Peete, and mixed by Ben Baptie, the resulting album encapsulates Jimetta's vision for a "Black spiritual classical music." Music, faith, community. The Voices of Creation are living their purpose and things are only going to get better.

FROM HOUSE TO DISCO Disco House For All 12"
From House To Disco is a hotly tipped all-female duo known for their fine taste in records, in-depth research into house history and fresh productions. They have been tipped as ones to watch by Brazilian tastemaker Renato Cohen and have released on his Massa Records as well as Get Physical's COCADA Music. Now they tap into the esteemed Definitive Recordings catalogue and add their own spin to four tracks which make up this EP, which will also be included on the 12-track Disco House For All compilation which includes more key selections from the label. First up, they tackle Blunted Dummies's "House For All" and flip it into a thumping house cut with old-school synth stabs and a low-slung bassline. Their remix of Las America's "Look, Listen, Love" brings jacked-up drums with plenty of original Chicago swagger, seductive vocals and a raw analogue bassline. The duo then bring a deep and stylish twist to Wax Fruit's "Be Yourself," which has rueful pads that encourage you to gaze off into the distance, lost in thought, while the tender piano chords bring extra soul. Last of all is their fresh remix of Barada's "Gasoline," which is a driving deep house gem with neon chord vamps and another timeless bassline.

CURRAN, BUCK One Evening and Other Folk Songs CD
Buck Curran says: "The foundation of this recording is the musical chemistry between Jodi Pedrali and myself. Jodi and I had been playing music together since 2017 and the band we assembled for this session, centered around the idea of having London native Dave Barbarossa play drums with us. Dave Barbarossa (Bow Wow Wow and Adam Ant) was my favorite drummer during my formative years playing guitar in high school. Dave and I first met over a pint in London (in Soho) in April of 2022. We talked about fatherhood and life, but mostly about music. It was wonderful to discover that he shared my love for the music of Pentangle. Soon after that meeting, we started discussing the idea of recording a Live session in the manner of some of the performances of Pentangle that we had watched on my cell phone in the pub. And so, once Dave agreed to fly to Bergamo to record with me and Jodi -- to round out the session we recruited the brilliant Italian singer Adele Pappalardo and bass player Robert Frassini Moneta. 'Black Is the Colour' is quite a different arrangement of this traditional Scottish-American folk song and features Adele singing lead vocals. The arrangement started with the bass line I wrote (influenced a bit by Danny Thompson's work with Pentangle). This track is one of the cornerstones of the new record and was recorded mostly improvised in one take. The essence of what we documented on this record is the energy of a quickly assembled group who had never played together before, and due to time restrictions, we arranged parts and rehearsed for only a few hours the day before entering the studio. All the songs performed by the band were recorded in the studio by Marco Fasolo as a 'Live' session (4, 5, and 6 July 2022) -- the tracks we used were from first or second take performances (Jodi and I really wanted to capture the energy of playing music together Live in the same space). I can hear things got a little loose in places, but overall we were really happy with how we all played together and grateful for recording the energy of that moment during those fleeting summer days in 2022." This is a co-release by Curran's Obsolete Recordings and ESP-Disk.

SANTIAGO, EMILIO Emilio Santiago LP
2024 repress, Far Out Recordings present a reissue of the 1975 self-titled debut album from Brazilian vocalist and bossa nova luminary Emilio Santiago. Nicknamed "the Nat King Cole of Brazil", Santiago was a master bossa balladeer and a top-class crooner. But he is known equally for his Brazilian funk, soul, and boogie classics. One of his best know is album opener "Bananeira", a party-starting version of the song originally written by Jo?o Donato and Gilberto Gil. "Brother" is a smooth-grooving killer with great horn arrangements and a huge backing choir, while "La Mulata" is a soulful, swinging salsa stepper. Originally released on the CID label, the album showcases the full range of Emilio's talents, while paying homage to some of Brazil's greatest composers, including Jorge Ben, Marcos and Sergio Valle, and Ivan Lins, among others. The credits on the album are a "who's who" of Brazil's greats, with Jo?o Donato on keys, Wilson das Neves, Ivan "Mam?o" Conti and Paulinho on drums, Durval Ferreira, Carlos Roberto Rocha and Helio Delmiro on guitar, Ariovaldo, Orlandivo and Chacal on percussion, Danilo Caymmi on flute, a brass section featuring Victor Assis Brasil, Edson Maciel and Jesse Sadoc, and backing vocals from Jaime & Nair, L?cia Lins, Jurema and Marcio Lott.

DILA Dila LP
2024 repress. Far Out Recordings presents a reissue of the first and only album from the mysterious Brazilian vocal sensation Dila (pronounced "Jee-la"). Having reportedly died in a car crash shortly after the album's release in 1971, there is very little known about the woman behind the voice. But the joyous music Dila left behind gives us a picture as good as any, of a powerful feminine soul at the top of her game. The liner notes on the elusive original LP, written by composer Arnoldo Medeiros attest: "Friend, look out! Because when this girl starts to sing, you're in trouble. Hold the railing so you don't fall down the stairs, because she's coming this way and shaking up everything." Arranged and produced by Durval Ferreira, alongside his studio band affectionately known as Os Grillos (The Crickets), Dila is a rare glimpse into the authentic soulful samba sound of Rio's favelas in the late sixties and early seventies. A blast of funky, percussive Brazilian breaks, scorching hot brass, and swing-laden piano, the music is as iconic as the album's stark cover, as is clear on opener "Inez," composed by The Crickets bassist Romildo. There's a fantastic interpretation of the Ivan Lins classic "Madalena" (made famous by Elis Regina), a moving version of the Tom Jobim and Vinicius De Moraes classic "O Morro N?o Tem Vez," and a number of sunny original compositions by Madeiros, whose other writing credits include music for Marcos Valle, Wanderlea, Evinha, and Dom Salvador. With original LPs extremely hard to come by, this rare treasure of Brazilian soul, which fans of Gal Costa, Celia, Evinha and Elis Regina will love, gets a much-deserved official reissue. Personnel: Durval Ferreira - guitar; Sidney Marzullo - piano; Romildo - bass; Fernando - drums; Horacio - percussion; Christ - brass. 180 gram vinyl.

ACCRA QUARTET Gb?fal?i LP
"Recorded on a hot night in a one-room gospel music studio in the New Town district of Accra, comes Gb?fal?i -- a remarkable record exploring the edges of contemporary African music. Ghanaian trombonist Elikplim Kofi and American guitarist Nathaniel Braddock had met at a concert at Accra's Alliance Fran?aise in 2017 when they both performed as members of the Abiza band. When Eli heard that Braddock was returning to Ghana in 2019, he reached out via WhatsApp to suggest a collaboration, sharing a sketch of a song and asking Braddock to produce a collaboration record. That August, they set up the session joined by two percussionists, known as Black and Brown. This session is the product of that night. Contemporary music in Ghana is dominated by a mix of Afrobeats, electric gospel, and an emergent revival of highlife stars from the 1970s. This set of improvised music sits on a different axis -- at once traditional and Avant Garde, ancient and futuritive, extremely local and thoroughly cosmopolitan. Anchored in folkloric instruments and free improvisation, the music is more like the Art Ensemble of Chicago than the court drummers of the Ashanti king. A rare gem."

SOREN SKOV ORBIT Adrift LP
S?ren Skov Orbit's debut album, Adrift, is at once subtle and profound. The saxophonist and his collaborators have created something quite special and consistently deep. This record may not easily be classifiable, but the most interesting music creeps between the lines. Danish tenor and soprano saxophonist S?ren Skov (Debre Damo Dining Orchestra) and keyboardist Peder Vind co-founded the trippy quintet S?ren Skov Orbit in 2016 to explore "more jazzy ideas," as the saxophonist puts it. Joined by a rhythm section steeped in contemporary improvisation and psychedelia, bassist Casper Nyvang Rask, drummer Rune Lohse and percussionist Ayi Solomon of the legendary '80s Ghanaian roots/highlife band Classique Vibes, the Orbit belts out a richly focused helping of broadly African-inspired modern jazz with a hazy sheen. As a tenor player, Skov has done his homework and has a kinship with Albert Ayler, Archie Shepp, J.R. Monterose, and the Dutchman Hans Dulfer, but he clearly has got his own robust phraseology and expressiveness. He also cites multi-reedists John Gilmore, Yusef Lateef, and Bilal Abdurahman as, "some of the players I've been listening to the most for the last 10-15 years." A healthy dose of reverb is present throughout the album, echoing Alton Abraham's studio wizardry with the Sun Ra Arkestra or the trance-inducing and compressed fidelity of certain Ethio-jazz and Mystic Revelations of Rastafari sessions. Skov notes that, "everything is recorded live at the same time in the same room. I wanted to do it that way in order to catch the dynamics and authenticity of the music." There is, in fact, a complex teetertotter between crisp and hazy execution, achieved by a delicately balanced mix that keeps the group's sound simultaneously advancing and receding. Vind's phrasing is terse and introspective, a vibrating echo that nudges and reflects on Skov's brusque tenor in a dance of sonic displacement. The coupling of Solomon and Lohse is a big part of the group's detailed energy; as the leader puts it, "Ayi knows everything about regional differences in drum patterns. He is always listening and super responsive, and his and Rune's dynamics are amazing." The music both presents a "vibe" and keeps the door open for engaging well under the surface as repeated listens will be extremely rewarding. RIYL: Sun Ra, John Coltrane, Fela Kuti, Nat Birchall, Nubya Garcia.

Honest Jon's Records present Solo Guitar Volume 1, a reissue of Derek Bailey's Solo Guitar release on Incus in 1971, with additional tracks included on previous reissues and a performance at York University in 1972. Kicking off a series of collaborations between Honest Jon's Records and Incus: three double-LPs of the legendary free-improvising guitarist Derek Bailey, solo and in duos with Anthony Braxton (HJR 201LP) and Han Bennink (HJR 202LP), augmenting the original releases with marvelous, previously unissued music. Recorded in 1971, Solo Guitar Volume 1 was Bailey's first solo album. Its cover is an iconic montage of photos taken in the guitar shop where he worked. He and the photographer piled up the instruments whilst the proprietor was at lunch, with Bailey promptly sacked on his return. The LP was issued in two versions over the years -- Incus 2 and 2R -- with different groupings of free improvisations paired with Bailey's performances of notated pieces by his friends Misha Mengelberg, Gavin Bryars, and Willem Breuker. All this music is here, plus a superb solo performance at York University in 1972, a welcome shock at the end of an evening of notated music. It's a striking demonstration of the way Bailey rewrote the language of the guitar with endless inventiveness, intelligence, and wit. As throughout the series, the recordings are newly transferred from tape at Abbey Road, and remastered by Rashad Becker. The records are manufactured by Pallas.

BAILEY/HAN BENNINK, DEREK Derek Bailey & Han Bennink 2LP
2024 restock. Honest Jon's Records present a reissue of Derek Bailey & Han Bennink, originally released in 1972. The third release in a series of collaborations between Honest Jon's Records and Incus: three double-LPs of the legendary free-improvising guitarist Derek Bailey, solo (HJR 200LP) and in duos with Anthony Braxton (HJR 201LP) and Han Bennink, augmenting the original releases with marvelous, previously unissued music. The tussling vegetables in Mal Dean's cover-sketch somehow befit perfectly this extraordinary duo of Bailey and the great Dutch drummer Han Bennink. Recorded in London in 1972, Incus 9 was their second record (after an Instant Composers Pool in 1969), becoming a blueprint and inspiration for generations of free-improvisers. It is paired here with a brilliant session from the following year, with the same power and friendly combativeness, and oodles of creativity, technique, and humor. It's obvious how much they loved playing together. Newly transferred from tape at Abbey Road, and remastered by Rashad Becker. The records are manufactured by Pallas.

FARMER/DONALD BYRD/IDREES SULIEMAN, ART Three Trumpets LP
Three Trumpets is an album by the Prestige All Stars nominally led by trumpeters Art Farmer, Donald Byrd, and Idrees Sulieman, recorded in 1957 and released on the New Jazz label. With a fine rhythm section (comprised of pianist Hod O'Brien, bassist Addison Farmer, and drummer Ed Thigpen), the brassmen perform five originals (one apiece from Farmer, Byrd, and O'Brien, and two from Sulieman). Although none of the songs caught on ("Palm Court Alley" is actually a blues), there are some fireworks during these performances.

PUENTE, TITO Afro-Cuban Percussion LP
Timbalero and vibraphonist Ernesto Antonio "Tito" Puente (1923-2000) is known for his Latin albums, their convoluted but accessible and feisty percussion segues and the introduction of the Mambo subgenre to North American ears. There is, however, only one album where he truly concentrates on the Latinized percussion side of things, and it may be both his most experimental or reduced and his best exotic work at the same time. This 1957 recordings -- originally by the name of Top Percussion -- brought together Tito, Mongo Santamaria, Willie Bobo, Aguabella, and Julito Collazo on percussion with vocalists that included Mercedita Valdez, in seven wonderful cuts of traditional and (then) contemporary Afro-Cuban skin-on-skin. Then as an unexpected gift, there is a seven-minute Latin-jazz suite featuring Puente's considerable jazz-arranger head and a powerful band with Doc Severinson on lead trumpet.

RAMSES3000 Thalamus LP
Multidisciplinary artist Yannick Verhoeven, aka Ramses3000, is back with a new album called Thalamus. Earlier known from his electro-cha3bi outlet Cairo Liberation Front, Verhoeven decided to discover unknown musical territory as he was inspired by calming music and aimed to compose music that allows the listener to relax and process the stimuli of daily life. Early in 2024, Thalamus was showcased at prestigious art installations at Museum De Pont, Kunstinstituut Melly, and Stedelijk Museum Breda and music festivals such as November Music and ADE. Crafting the album for two years resulted in a remarkable trip that sounds like a cross-pollination where the classical and digital worlds meet, incorporating influences from ambient, jazz, new age and psychedelic music.

VA Skinhead Shuffle LP
LP version. The early reggae sound that came out of Jamaica between the years 1968 and 1971 became the soundtrack to the skinhead movement in the UK. Not only was the music embraced but also the dress style of the Jamaican Rude Boys. The skinhead style started around 1968 and by the following year 1969, had become the style and fashion of the British teenagers. The uniform of the skinheads consisted of boots, braces, button down shirts and jeans and the upbeat reggae sounds seemed to match the style perfectly. The tempo of the music in Jamaica had previously slowed down from the more up tempo beat of ska to the calmer pace of beat called rock steady. Some say this was to match the extreme heat wave that was hitting the island between 1966 and 1968. But that period had now passed and the evolution of the reggae beat had again found a new pulse to hang its songs by. A more up tempo beat that all Jamaicans, British youths and various pockets of people around the world could groove to. Kingston Sounds have selected a cross section of tunes from those heady times, so sit back and enjoy some of the tunes the youths were listening to when the Skinhead Shuffle was all the rage. Featuring Max Romeo, Roland Alphonso & Don Lee, The Hotrod All Stars, Winston Williams, Winston Scotland, Bunny Lee All Stars, Doreen Schaffer, U Roy, Val Bennet, Lee Perry, Roland Alphonso, Winston Francis, Slim Smith & Doreen Schaffer, Vin Gordon, Alva Lewis, Glen Adams, and Dave Barker.

Originally released in 1997 on the iconic Frankfurt imprint Mille Plateaux, and then reissued in 2016 as a part of GAS Box (KOM 370LP, 2016), Zauberberg is now released on his own label, Kompakt. Layers of ominous intensity supported by muffled kick drums as classical music loops incessantly swirl with no direction, Zauberberg is the definitive GAS album and a perfect starting point for those not familiar with his music. 180 gram vinyl.

Oktember is finally released on Voigt's own label Kompakt, pressed on 180 gram vinyl in its original artwork. This reissue features "Tal 90" (instead of the original A side) -- a predecessor to the GAS project originally recorded in 1990 under the alias TAL, it was released as a part of the Pop Ambient 2002 collection (KOM 050LP/KOMP 014CD). With its sampled strings, horns and guitars, "Tal 90" soundtracks a more uplifting side to what is typically accustomed to being the sound of GAS. GAS GAS 3LP
Triple LP version. Kompakt presents, finally, a reissue of the first, self-titled GAS album. Originally released on electronica imprint Mille Plateaux back in 1996, it's been unavailable in its original form ever since -- the version of GAS included in 2008's Nah Und Fern box featured several different tracks. Here, however, GAS is restored in all its glory, the debut full-length from Wolfgang Voigt's most enigmatic, quixotic project. There had, of course, been signs of what was to come. Back in 1995, Voigt essayed the first Gas release, a slender, yet remarkable four-track EP, Modern. Its center label featured a reduced symbol -- an overhead or lamp light, switched on, its glow radiating outwards in four bold black lines -- a perfect representation of the tight, stylized ambient electronic pop contained on that 12". A few curious compilation tracks were floating around, too, for Mille Plateaux's Modulation & Transformation and Electric Ladyland series. If you were attentive enough, you could tell something was up. But nothing quite prepared listeners for the languorous, effervescing loops and regular-like-clockwork beats that Voigt folded together on GAS. Its six long tracks, all untitled, neither begin nor end but hazily fade into earshot, vibrate majestically in your cochlea for fifteen-or-so minutes -- some a bit shorter, some longer -- and then meander away, reading the mise-en-sc?ne for the next example of Voigt's drift and dream logic to unfold. The material is referential in the most distant way, and you can sense only the most evanescent of ghostly presences, haunting these six compositions. GAS feels, also, like a more pliable hint at what's to come, as the GAS concept really solidified on its successor, 1997's Zauberberg, and reach its apotheosis on K?nigsforst and Pop. Those three albums share a very similar palette -- blurred, hazy samples, often of classical music, stacked and cross-thatched across a muted 4/4 thud. GAS, then, is an outlier of sorts: it's more expansive in its remit, lighter in its mood, perhaps more fleet of foot. This, of course, is part of its charm. In clearing space for Voigt, by preparing the terrain, GAS sits both at the edge of the forest, and at the verge of an expansive, wide-eyed future; one where GAS would become truly eternal. MONTGOMERY, ROY Temple IV 2LP
Restocked. "This is the first vinyl issue of Temple IV, arguably Roy Montgomery's finest solo album, originally released in 1996 on CD. The original album has been enhanced with two newer tracks that constitute side four of the album. Montgomery states: 'The two new tracks recorded in 2018 were about asking the question 'Can you step into the same river twice?' Heraclitus said you cannot. I say you can.' From the original press release: Few recording artists have aligned the quantity and quality of their releases as well as New Zealand singer/guitarist Roy Montgomery has in 1995. Beginning with Kranky's release of the soundtrack for an imaginary film That That Is... Is(Not) by Montgomery's duo Dissolve early in the year, a series of superb albums and singles have been issued by a variety of labels across the world. Each one of them is a must have. Most recently, the Drunken Fish label released a collection of pastoral drones entitled Scenes From The South Island, singles have appeared on the Roof Bolt and gyttja labels, and further singles are scheduled with Ajax, Siltbreeze, and others. Temple IV is the first solo recording by Roy Montgomery on Kranky. The album was recorded by Montgomery on a four-track tape deck and then thickened up with monophonic moog. The tracks on the album are thick with interwoven guitar lines and moog drone, inspired by the Guatemalan rain forests and the mysterious ruins of the temple and ruins Montgomery visited there."

SEPH Septimo Sentido LP
There are albums that tap into the very heartbeats of rhythm, melody and intricate sound design, pulsating with every musical note. This is the case of S?ptimo Sentido, the new album by Buenos Aires-based producer Seph. Sebasti?n Galante aka Seph is no stranger to these realms; with almost two decades of experience under his belt, he has established himself as one of the leading talents in the Argentina techno scene and as one of the most intriguing minds in alternative Latin American electronic music. His productions have found a home in cutting edge labels such as Insurgentes -- a platform led by the DJ and producer from Medell?n (Colombia) Verraco, and sister label of TraTraTrax, which has reduced gaps between the Latin electronic scene and the rest of the globe -- or his own label Aula Magna Records. He has also fostered collaborations, among which stands out his project Oscean alongside Andr?s Zacco, a project that was recently released on the legendary Berlin label Tresor. In his new album S?ptimo Sentido, Seph exhibits superlative production skills and masterfully showcases the widest palette of the braindance sound, that intersection where countless genres and sub-styles can coexist. There are echoes from the mid-'90s that revive undeniable references of early IDM, but with a renewed form, under a fiercely contemporary new skin. At the core of this intriguing album is an artist whose devotion to experimentation takes his rhythmic and melodic obsessions through vibrant magical-techno-urban landscapes, where radiant colors and mutating forms collide in a bold and imaginative sonic journey. S?ptimo Sentido hails from the prism of perception, beyond the five senses and a step further than instinct, hunting for mysterious resonances with the cosmos; like a space portal inviting listeners to float a handspan above the ground.

CRYIN' SHAMES, THE Please Stay LP
"Please Stay," by The Cryin' Shames, was the last song by producer Joe Meek to enter the UK Top 40, peaking at No. 26. Released on 18 February 1966, the song should have reached the top, but its progress was held back by the fact that the Decca record label had not pressed enough copies to meet demand. The collaboration should have been long and successful for both of them, but the Cryin' Shames story is cursed with bad luck and, sadly, within a year of the success of "Please Stay" the band broke up and Joe Meek died. This compilation brings together a first part of the material collected by Cherry Red on the double CD The Tea Chest Tapes. The group began as The Bumblies, formed in Liverpool in 1963 by bassist George Robinson and singer Joey Kneen who had previously been in a band called The Calderstones, that included Tom Evans, who later went on to form the group Badfinger. The Bumblies' name was taken from a television series of the same name featuring Michael Bentine. The rest of the line-up included Charlie Crane (vocals, harmonica), John Bennett (guitar), Phil Roberts (keyboards), and Charlie Gallagher (drums). Charlie Crane would be known in addition as Carl or Paul to avoid confusion with the other Charlie in the group. Joe Meek didn't like the band's choice of name so they changed it to The Cryin' Shames. Ritchie Routledge replaced Bennett (guitar) after the recording of their debut single "Please Stay." Derek Cleary (bass/guitar) replaced Robinson in time to play on their second single "Nobody Waved Goodbye." After the original Cryin' Shames fell apart, Routledge and Crane formed a group known as Paul And Ritchie And The Crying Shames with new members Brian Norris (bass), Mike Espie (guitar), Pete Byrne (organ), and Paul Commerford (drums). They released one single, "September In The Rain." The group (as The Bumblies) auditioned for Joe Meek in late October or early November 1965 -- the exact date cannot be ascertained because Meek's tapes contain very little information, and only one or two of the more than seven hundred tapes actually bear a recording date.

PRIVATE JOY Desire! 12"
With a namesake derived from the mighty Prince's catalogue, and its lustful connotations, Private Joy is the producer of soul band Lovescene and a supreme vocalist of the Manchester scene. With collaborations working with the likes of Ruf Dug, Finn, and Lenzman, a solo EP was inevitable and a statement this is. Pops Roberts' first solo EP debuts on Rhythm Section INTL bringing together influences from Streetsoul, '80s "babymaker' RnB records and a slice of '00s soulful house in there for good measure. In just over 18 minutes, Private Joy welcomes you into her world of sensuality and soulful warmth. Musical hugs galore, the production balances synths, harps, saxophones, tight beats and meaningful lyrical content; eschewing millennial whoops for Sade indebted dulcet tones. Each track draws from personal experience; be it heartbreak or reconnection, an emotional diary conveying the trials and tribulations of love, loss and ultimately, desire. Featuring Ada Francis.

IVAN THE TOLERABLE QUINTET Vertigo LP
Limited edition of 300. Cyan color vinyl, housed in a reverse board sleeve with hype sticker, polylined inner bag and download code. Stars align and Oli Heffernan brings his ever-(d)evolving Ivan The Tolerable to Riot Season for sublime entropic drift. Having this time recruited Christian Alderson (The Unit Ama) on drums, John Pope (Ponyland) on double bass, Kevin Nickles (Ecstatic Vision) on flute and saxophone and Ben Hopkinson on electric piano -- the album was recorded as a quintet, the players barely brushing or breathing a note before the whole thing was done. Vertigo, is all claustrophobic, dense and disorientating -- like Sun Ra sitting in with Exploding Star Orchestra.

ONODERA, YUI 1982 CD
A note from Yui Onodera: "I stayed in Iwate, where I was born, for a few days and created some sound materials using limited materials and old media. Over ten years ago, Iwate was devastated by the Great East Japan earthquake. Many old things that remained in my memory became rubble, dismantled, and new scenery was there. I bounced every song from 1982 straight onto an old tape recorder. This album that comes out of my interest in sonic 'degradation and rebuilding.' I treated the guitar and synthesizer in a lot of new ways, so using a lot of tape recorders and/or pedal effects. I wanted the guitar to be an extension of the ambient textures rather than technology and imperfection. The raw and the processed. We benefited greatly from the evolution and democratization of computer and audio technology in the early '00s. I was fascinated by sounds that could not be created by humans, such as real-time audio synthesis and granular synthesis. Now, 20-odd years later, I am fascinated by sounds that cannot be created with a computer. It was a unique acoustic texture created by deterioration and wear, including accidental wear, due to old technology that is disappearing. It's like a memory of my old days in Iwate."

FAHEY, JOHN Blind Joe Death LP
2024 repress. 180 gram exact repro of the original 1959 recording of the first John Fahey album (recording half of it under the moniker "Blind Joe Death"). This has the stark black & white sleeve with just the artist names in block letters. This album was famously re-recorded in both 1964 and 1967, but this is the first reissue of the more primitive debut edition (some takes not included on the 1996 Takoma CD compilation of all three versions). Referred to as the "gas station" edition by Glenn Jones, due to Fahey's manner of employment at the time. "In 1959, John Fahey's debut album Blind Joe Death became the first release from his own (and co-founder Ed Denson's) tiny Takoma label. With that release, Fahey set in motion a new era of independent guitar recording activity. The influence of Blind Joe Death extends way beyond its minimal pressing run of 100 LPs. Fahey brought a new kind of sophisticated primitivism to an international audience. His huge, closely-miked, steel-strung guitar sound reinterpreted such basic folk and blues techniques as stops, pull-offs and slides inside a musical structure that owed more to jazz than to folk music. His unique array of open tunings -- not just open G and D but also C, D minor, G minor and C drone -- and his paced, never-in-a-hurry approach to playing (some uncharitable souls might say 'dirge-like') sound like no other guitarist. Fahey wryly commented to guitarist Dale Miller 'I can make syncopation sound like death.'"

ROUSAY, CLAIRE sentiment (Pink Vinyl) LP
LP version. Pink color vinyl. "sentiment is a meditation of the poignant emotional terrains of loneliness, nostalgia, sentimentality, guilt, and sex. The album's narrative arc is guided by delicate musical gestures and artistic vulnerability, audaciously synthesizing disparate and unexpected influences. Claire Rousay is a singular artist, known for challenging conventions in experimental and ambient music forms. Rousay masterfully incorporates textural found sounds, sumptuous drones and candid field recordings into music that celebrates the beauty in life's banalities. Her music is curatorial and granular in detail, deftly shaped into emotionally affecting pieces. Rousay's vocals and guitar take center stage on sentiment. Her intimate, diaristic lyrics contrast with her mechanical-inflected vocal effects, emphasizing a powerful desire for connection, a deep yearning and a lingering sense of separation. The spare guitar playing and laconic tempo both drive the songs and exude a sense of resignation. Her delicate mastery of nuance draws on her explorative musical past that she, with sincerity and admiration, seamlessly interweaves into her adventurous textures and distinctive compositions. 'I want to belong to the worlds and communities I look up to. Same as someone using a Fender guitar or dressing like Kurt Cobain. Emulate your heroes,' says Rousay. The album balances the poetic soul of her influences with a documentarian heart, Rousay capturing moments of her life while living alone in houses across the country, learning to play guitar, and reconnecting with pop music. Her innate ability to conjure pure feeling from sound derives from her delightful embrace of pop forms, the vulnerability found in field recordings, minimalistic arrangements and innovative sound choices. sentiment is blissfully, achingly melancholic, and an undeniably sensual listening experience."

CALE, JOHN Fear LP
Fear is the first of John Cale's three studio albums for Island Records, all of which were released in a period of just over a year. During this time Cale was also producing records for other artists, working on albums such as Horses (1975) by Patti Smith, one of the most influential of all proto-punk records. In addition to his lead vocals on Fear, Cale also played keyboards, guitars, viola, violin and bass, and was joined by Fairport Convention's Richard Thompson, Roxy Music's Brian Eno and Phil Manzanera, and other artists who were signed to Island at the time. "Gun" features an unusual two-man guitar solo from Manzanera and Eno, with the latter using a synthesizer to process the former's guitar playing in real-time.

NICO The End LP
The End is the fourth studio album by German musician Nico. It was recorded in summer 1974 at Sound Techniques studio in London and produced by John Cale. It was released in November 1974. The End is Nico's fifth collaboration with John Cale and second with him as producer. It carries the same harmonium-based sound heard on The Marble Index (HE 68005LP, 1968) and Desertshore (HE 70004LP, 1970), with the addition of Brian Eno's synthesizers and electronic instruments. The song "You Forget to Answer" tells of the misery felt by Nico when she failed to reach ex-lover, and Doors' singer, Jim Morrison by phone only to find out later that he had died. The album was her first since Morrison's death in 1971.
